QUEENS ROAD SOCIAL CLUB SHEFFIELDʼS NEWEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE National music website Drowned in Sound - in conjunction with city centre live venue the Harley - take to Queens Social Club this month with a very special lineup, in what they hope will be the first of many successful shows at the 500-capacity venue. Drowned in Sound have worked with the Harley for the past three years to bring some of the most cutting-edge breaking bands in the world to the venue, and are now expanding their operation. Previous ventures outside of the Harley have included sell-out shows at Manchester’s Deaf Institute (Caribou and M83), a gig with Canadian super-group Broken Social Scene at Corporation, two Rollerpalooza parties

at Skate Central and various lineups at this year’s Tramlines festival, including a whole day’s worth of music on the New Music Stage, headlined by Brighton alt-rockers Blood Red Shoes. “We’ve been looking for a great mid-sized venue to work with for a while, and the function room at Queens just seemed perfect for us”, says promoter Rob Webb. “It’s a great size and setup for live music, as well as having a lot of character. We’ve always been of the opinion that a live music venue should be more than just a sterile space in which a band can play and, in that respect, Queens - with its original 1970s décor and very apparent history really appealed to us.” The lineup they’ve gone for for this

launch party is very much in keeping with their cuttingedge ethos, featuring a selection of their current favourite international, national and local bands. The show will be headlined by Californian all-girl quartet Dum Dum Girls. Proclaiming themselves fans of a “blissed-out buzz saw” sound, the band’s lush, all-girl vocal melodies and reverbheavy garage-pop will appeal to lovers of the Shangri-Las and Spector-esque girlgroups. Also on the bill are Leeds wall-of-sound aficionados Spectrals and hotly-tipped Sheffield band Mairead, whose sultry brand of indie-rock has earned them considerable praise and a hook-up with Arctic Monkeys’ management team.

“We always try to get deserving local acts on our lineups alongside headliners from further afield”, says the promoter. “There are so many bands and artists in and around Sheffield who are doing something really exciting that we feel almost duty-bound to showcase them in the best environment that we can.” Tickets for the event are available from www.wegottickets. com, www.seetickets. com, the Harley box office and the Wick at Both Ends, priced at £8.

This weekends fundraising activity was our annual two-day collection at the Tesco Superstore in Rotherham town centre. Thanks to the generosity of the shoppers we raised £186.67 towards the on-going costs of running the station. This week saw the end of sales on the Great Big Small Charity Car Draw raffle that we have been participating in. Organised through The FSI this raffle has just one fabulous prize – a brand new MINI First. The big draw is on 14th October 2010 and we wish good luck to everyone who purchased tickets from us. Fundraising is always ongoing at Radio Nightingale as we have no guaranteed sources of income to cover any of our general running costs of licences, postage, stationery, etc. Even small amounts from individuals through our ongoing fundraising can make a real difference in this on-going task. Easyfundraising is the easiest way to help raise money for Radio Nightingale! If you already shop online with retailers such as Amazon, Argos, John Lewis, Comet, iTunes, eBay or HMV, then we need you to sign up for free to raise money while you shop! You shop directly with the retailer as you would normally, but if you sign up to www.easyfundraising.org. uk/radionightingale for free and use the links on the easyfundraising site to take you to the retailer, then a percentage of whatever you spend comes directly to us at no extra cost to yourself. There’s over 2,000 retailers on their site, and some of the donations can be as much as 15% of your purchase. Or for every day surfing there’s our search engine www.everyclick.com/radionightingale where your searches to contribute to Radio Nightingale. Again

COPLEYʼS COLUMN I am always happy to use this column as a vehicle to advertise worthy charitable events and accordingly would like to mention the Dronfield Clay Pigeon Charity Shoot to be held in Bowshaw field opposite the Toby Carvery on Sheffield Road, Dronfield on Sunday 26th September between the hours of 10.a.m and 3 p.m. Charities to benefit are Ashgate Hospice, British Heart Foundation, Help for Heroes and the PDSA. Refreshments are available and a charity auction and raffle will take place after the shoot at the Talbot Arms, Dronfield Woodhouse where a free buffet can be enjoyed. Some of you may have been following the ‘Froglet Diaries’ on You Tube which chronicle the devastation felt by popular local artiste Sunny Daye, following the break up with her partner, Keith Tallis. Early video diaries show Sunny looking most distressed, and as the diaries progress, her gradual recovery is evidenced. These diaries achieved a massive number of hits and were picked up by the Daily Mail, and news agencies throughout the world. The story has featured on ABC and NBC News in America, and Sunny has received calls from such far flung places as China and Brazil. Much comment was posted on social network Facebook, many telling Sunny how to run her life, without knowledge of all the circumstances involved. For my part, I chose to keep an open mind, made easier by being constantly in touch with my dear friend Sunny, and trying to

put forward both sides of the coin. I am happy to report that these diaries were seen by Keith, her ex partner, and he quickly realised the devastation that had been caused, and got back in touch with Sunny, realising how much she loved him and also how much he loved her. I am happy to report that they are now back together, stronger than ever, and I have, prior to compiling this article, enjoyed a hearty breakfast with them both, casting aside for today my stringent efforts to lose weight. For her part, Sunny is delighted to have received many messages from people in similar circumstances, stating that watching the Froglet Diaries has been beneficial to them in facing similar circumstances. I understand that Sunny and Keith may soon be appearing on GMTV, and who knows, the story may spread across America and an appearance on Oprah Winfrey could be imminent. Should this happen, I have already offered my services as management consultant. According to the news, the Trades Union Congress are meeting to organise a series of strikes to protest about the necessary economic cuts in public sector spending on the basis that such cuts would seriously damage the economy. What absolute nonsense is this, I can think of no worse thing to hinder economic recovery than across the board strikes. At breakfast, at the Chantry Hotel in Dronfield last week, I met a charming gentleman, fairly senior in age, who informed me that he was appearing that night at

Crookes Club, where his skiffle band appear once a month. This brought back fond childhood memories of the wonderful Lonnie Donegan. He informed me that his name was Albert Hattersley and he was aware that a friend of mine bearing the same name was a very famous retired rascal, whose speciality was blowing safes with gelignite. He was also famous for escaping from Leicester prison, by jumping over the wall which was thirty five feet high. Albert (skiffle) Hattersley informed me that he was anxious to contact his namesake for a chat. I well remember an afternoon with top southpaw world boxing champion, Alan Minter, and, as I had to entertain him for five hours with my limited boxing knowledge, was pleased to introduce him to Albert Hattersley, the rascal. Alan Minter was fascinated to be regaled with some really interesting stories about his safe-blowing escapades, when I introduced them to each other. I reminded Alan of this when we met at a funeral in London the following year, and he said he could remember it well. The biggest dates on my social calendar next month are the wedding of my great friend Cassi Kennedy to her partner John and also the coveted Mercury Awards, which threw up one or two surprises this year. I believe that this exemplifies the fairness in having voting boxes in our local clubs.. In one particular category, one artiste was way in front before the boxes were collected and finished up pipped on the post.

The Scouts are set to take over the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield for the most spectacular showcase of Scouting that the North has ever seen – Northern Lights 2011! On Saturday the 9th of July 2011, over 2000 young people and adults from across the North East of England take over the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena to put on a show which is set to top anything ever produced in this area before and perform to an audience of up to 16,000 people. There are nearly 40,000 young people in the North East Scouting region and many adults who give up their time to support the varied programme that a young person involved in Scouting in the 21st century can get involved in… so whether it is away on an adventure weekend with your mates, visiting a country that you never thought possible or just having a great time at your weekly group meeting… modern day Scouting is the place to be! “We wanted to put on a great show that could be enjoyed by not only people already involved in Scouting in the region , but also the public, who can come along and see for themselves what Scouting is all about and see just what these young people can do” says event Chairman Robert Teasdale. So… what will be involved

in the show? “we will have everything from a taster of some of the fantastic adventurous activities that are available to the young people week in, week out as Scouts to a taste of the regions with the traditions of each county involved in the event being showcased” “We will also have some fantastic performances throughout the night from music and dance to show pieces, routines and inter county competitions! There will also be a real celebration of scouting with the presentations of some of Scouting’s highest awards taking place on the night!” says producer Phil Pearson. So… plans are set, and across the North, young people and adults are busy preparing routines and sets to make sure that the event goes with a bang! Tickets for the event on Saturday 9th July 2011 can be purchased in person at the Arena, through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or online at www. motorpointarena.co.uk. “This is meat-and-potatoes standup, but the sauce is tart, the meat’s bleeding and the spuds are hard as rock” The Guardian “You can forgive Frankie Boyle’s confidence and his apparent belief that he is really that good. That is simply, because he is” Edinburgh Evening News Tickets for Frankie Boyle at Motorpoint Arena priced £28.50 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale. ALBERT SNODGRASS

A drunk walks into a bar and says to the bartender, “Bartender, buy everyone in the house a drink, pour yourself one, and give me the bill.” So, the bartender does just that and hands the man a bill for £57.00. The drunk says, “I haven’t got it.” The bartender slaps the guy around a few times then throws him out into the street. The very next day the same drunk walks into the bar and once again says, “Bartender, buy everyone in the house a drink, pour yourself one, and give me the bill.” The bartender looks at the guy and figures to himself that he can’t possibly be stupid enough to pull the same trick twice, so he gives him the benefit of the doubt, pours a round of drinks for the house, has a drink himself and hands the drunk a bill for £67.00. The drunk says, “I haven’t got it.” The bartender can’t believe it. He picks the guy up, beats the living daylights out of him, then throws him out into the street. The next day the same drunk walks back into the same bar and says “Bartender, buy every one in the house a drink, give me the bill.” In disgust, the bartender says, “What, no drink for me this time?” The drunk replies, “You? No way! You get too violent when you drink.” Yesterday, scientists for Health Canada suggested that men should take a look at their beer consumption, considering the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. The theory is that drinking beer makes men turn into women. To test the finding, 100 men were fed six pints of beer each. It was then observed that 100% of the men gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became overly emotional, couldn’t drive, failed to think rationally, argued over nothing, and refused to apologize when wrong. No further testing is planned. After a heavy night at the pub, a drunken man decides to sleep off his drunkenness at a local hotel. He approaches the reception desk, takes care of the formalities and heads off to his suite. Several minutes later, the drunk staggers back to the reception desk and demands his room be changed. “But sir,” said the clerk, “you have the best room in the hotel.” “I insist on another room!!!” said the drunk. “Very good, sir. I’ll change you from 502 to 525. Would you mind telling me why you don’t like 502?” asked the clerk. “Well, for one thing,” said the drunk, “it’s on fire.” Two drunks stumble out of a pub and are walking along the road. One drunk says to the other, “What a beautiful night, look at the moon.” The other drunk stops and look at his drunk friend, “You are wrong, that’s not the moon, that’s the sun.” Both started arguing for a while when they come upon another drunk walking so they stopped him. “Sir, could you please help settle our argument? Tell us what that thing is up in the sky that’s shining. Is it the moon or the sun?” The third drunk looked at the sky and then looked at them and said, “Sorry, I don’t live around here.”

Herds of runners to take part in Whirlow Hall Farm 10k

Herds of runners will be racing through fields on the outskirts of Sheffield next weekend for Whirlow Hall Farm’s 10k Challenge Run. The race, which takes place on Sunday 19th September, is part of the annual Farm Fayre and there are still places available to enter. Sponsored by Loop Print, the 10K Trail Challenge will take runners on a demanding route surrounding Whirlow Hall Farms’ system of trails. The stretch heads down to the beautiful Limb Valley and includes portions of the Sheffield Round Walk. Race organiser, Shauna McKnight said ‘Unlike other 10k’s that take place in the city, the Whirlow Hall Farm Challenge Run is a really scenic route and for the first time it is registered with the Trail Running Association. We are hoping for record numbers of runners this year who can test their fitness while raising much needed funds for the Trust.” Other healthy activities are planned for all the all the family at the Farm Fayre, which is sponsored by Sheffield Orthopaedics Ltd, including a fun run for under 15’s, a free Kids’ zone, sponsored by Redrow homes,

A-DOOR-ABLE! MERCY MERCY! Two Door Cinema Club are 3 people with the help of technology and a thirst for anything quirky. If you were to pose the question, “Where do Two Door Cinema Club live?” and someone was to answer, “Why, Bangor!” That someone would only be 66.67% correct because Two Door Cinema Club are a Bangor/ Donaghadee based electro pop band. At first an obvious absence in the rhythm department was humbly filled by an unadulterated Macintosh however the band have recently found a sticksman to beef up their live shows. Their music has been loosely compared to the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Broken Social Scene but without a definitive capacity to be pigeon-holed. Melodic vocals, which hail from all three members of the outfit, infuse with guitar riffs that have been described as “oceanic” and rhythm described as “pulsing”. They are signed to French record label Kitsuné Music, through which they released their debut album Tourist History. Trimble and Halliday first met whilst attending Bangor Grammar School. They met Baird when he was trying to get off with girls they knew. In 2007, Two Door Cinema Club was formed, and following an increased interest in their music on their MySpace page, they gave up their university places and began work on studio material. An EP “Four Words To Stand On” was released in January 2009 and was positively received by critics. A number of music blogs featured articles about the band and their popularity increased. The band play the Leadmill on the 20th.

It’s one for you metal heads; In just a year since their first gig, The Mercy House: have had one of their tracks featured in Classic Rock Magazine’s cover CD, won Metal Hammer’s unsigned competition to open for NY hardcore giants Biohazard in London, received airplay and great praise on Bruce Dickinson’s Friday Rock Show, and bagged a nomination for ‘New Band of the Year’ for the 2010 Pure Rawk Awards. Their music focuses on the internal politics and personal strife facing them on a daily basis, the sole intention being to hit the UK music scene with a clenched fist. They do not offer you escapism, preferring instead to use their music and live show as a rallying call for anyone trapped on the outside, forever looking in. (I think I know wot they mean!). Troika: Any group of three persons, nations, etc., acting equally in unison to exert influence and control (now you know!) They are an original three piece who play classic and progressive heavy metal. Over the past two years the band have been extensively gigging in and around Sheffield to promote themselves and increase they’re loyal and ever-growing fan base. Once A Fortnight: We all live in Rotherham, which is kinda Sheffield’s bitch. (I like these already!) We play a wide variety of music because we’re all into different stuff (Neck likes Radiohead for example, and they suck). We’ve just got our teeth stuck into writing some songs, and we can’t really say what genre they fit in to so I guess we sit in the ‘other’ category . . .Nicely put boys! Nil Satis: A 5-Piece rock/punk/solo’s/ drunk/whatever band comprising of 3 Yorkshire lads and 2 Undercover Southerners. Tired of dreary indie bores and image bands with identical haircuts, Nil Satis bring the grass roots fun back to live music with epic live shows, cutting banter and mind-blistering songs to get your head rocking and your feet movin!…. Nuff said.

DUM DUM GIRLS @ QUEENS National music website Drowned in Sound - in conjunction with city centre live venue the Harley - take to Queens Social Club this month with a very special lineup, in what they hope will be the first of many successful shows at the 500-capacity venue. Drowned in Sound have worked with the Harley for the past three years to bring some of the most cutting-edge breaking bands in the world to the venue, and are now expanding their operation. Previous ventures outside of the Harley have included sell-out shows at Manchester’s Deaf Institute (Caribou and M83), a gig with Canadian super-group Broken Social Scene at Corporation, two Rollerpalooza parties at Skate Central and various lineups at this year’s Tramlines festival, including a whole day’s worth of music on the New Music Stage, headlined by Brighton alt-rockers Blood Red Shoes. “We’ve been looking for a great midsized venue to work with for a while, and the function room at Queens just seemed perfect for us”, says promoter Rob Webb. “It’s a great size and setup for live music, as well as having a lot of character. We’ve always been of the opinion that a live music venue should be more than just a sterile space in which a band can play and, in that respect, Queens - with its original 1970s décor and very apparent history really appealed to us.” The lineup they’ve gone for for this launch party is very much in keeping with their cutting-edge ethos, featuring

a selection of their current favourite international, national and local bands. The show will be headlined by Californian all-girl quartet Dum Dum Girls. Proclaiming themselves fans of a “blissed-out buzz saw” sound, the band’s lush, all-girl vocal melodies and reverb-heavy garage-pop will appeal to lovers of the Shangri-Las and Spectoresque girl-groups. Also on the bill are Leeds wall-ofsound aficionados Spectrals and hotlytipped Sheffield band Mairead, whose sultry brand of indie-rock has earned them considerable praise and a hook-up with Arctic Monkeys’ management team. “We always try to get deserving local acts on our lineups alongside headliners from further afield”, says the promoter. “There are so many bands and artists in and around Sheffield who are doing something really exciting that we feel almost duty-bound to showcase them in the best environment that we can.” Tickets for the event are available from www.wegottickets.com, www. seetickets.com, the Harley box office and the Wick at Both Ends, priced at £8. Drowned in Sound presents: Dum Dum Girls, Queens Social Club, 4 Queens Road, Sheffield, S2 4DG - Saturday 25th September - 8pm Tickets £8

INTERVIEW EXCLUSIVE artist: PENDULUM by KT Evans & Annie Darling ‘Broken limbs are what we aim for!’ Ozzie six piece, Pendulum, sure know how to get things done their own way. No only have they effectively injected the international music scene with a concoction of electronic vibes verses drum and base hardcore beats, but also changed people’s perception about music itself. Up until they hit the big time in 2008, emerging from a gig with a black eye and broken limb resulted in being put off going to a concert altogether. Nowadays, the same conclusion to a Pendulum show would mean the band have successfully achieved their aim; to create a notoriously dangerous, emotive live performance which will sure as hell take a while to forget. Mercury met with Gareth McGrillen, Pendulum’s multitalented bassist, just minutes before their headline spot on the NME/Radio 1 Tent at this years Leeds Festival, to find out about pinnacle moments, plans and the production of his kick-ass live band. Having played on the same stage two years ago, Pendulum have risen in popularity along with their erratic live performance since then. ‘We kind of got our big break on this stage two years ago and we were given opportunities to play high up on the bill and prove ourselves. Its good to come back and headline, this means a lot to us.’ Gracing the stage at 22:00 on the Friday evening, where the Leeds crowds were no doubt hungry for an hectic, mosh-pit fuelled performance, Gareth explains his views on the slot Pendulum were allocated. ‘We’re on a really good day because for us, the lineup is a little bit boring, so we’ll get the audience going. The other two days are incredible though.’ And what should the audience expect? ‘Broken Limbs are what we aim for!’ Although Pendulum fans shouldn’t anticipate any recording plans in the near future, Gareth reveals, ‘we do get bored quite quickly so we’ll get to work on new stuff I’m sure. I don’t know maybe a side project?’ That would be if they could fit that in of course. Embarking on a nonstop tour of Europe and the UK as well as Australia means that the six piece have very little time to think about producing new material. ‘At the moment, its just touring non-stop. We’ve got a European tour coming up, then another UK tour. Next year, we’re going to hit America so by that time it will be festival season again.’ Unarguably touring is a major contributing factor to any bands success and Gareth is the first to back this up. ‘We really pride ourselves on writing and production, but our live show itself is one of the more notorious parts. I guess at the moment this is definitely what is winning us battles.’ And the name? We were hoping it had a profound meaning, reminiscent of the bands collective, passionate enigma, entwined to the members creative, musical characters. And yes, we were wrong! ‘It was just on a short list we came up with. It was one word, it was concise. People think that its to do with the tempos and mystical gravity, but its not!’ Pendulum are touring the UK until late September, so be sure to catch one of their fast paced, adrenaline fuelled performances before they embark on their European tour. One word of advice though...if you have a nervous disposition, we’d give it a miss!!! Pendulum will be appearing at Nottngham Arena on Saturday the 4th of December

artist: Placebo ds single:Trigger Happy Hanber release date: 20th Septem This is yet another new promotional idea invented by record companies. You can’t blame ‘em and I like it when they come up with something no-ones thought of before. Atticus Clothing, one of alternative music’s favourite clothing brands, and recently launched label, Atticus Black Music, have exclusively teamed up with Placebo to release the band’s new track ‘Trigger Happy Hands’ as a digital download track (only) along with a limited edition T-shirt, designed by Placebo and Atticus’ Paul Jackson. Not only will this be a first for Atticus, Placebo also will be re-issuing the brilliant ‘Battle for the Sun’ album, fully remastered including the new single version of ‘Bright Lights’ with a 10 track bonus disc featuring brand new tracks, including ‘Trigger Happy Hands’, reworked classic tracks and for the first time ever seen, the Atticus collaboration T-shirt. The new ‘Redux’ version will include the full album and 10 bonus tracks housed in a digipack featuring new artwork, along with the T-shirt, which is compressed down and all packaged together in a newly designed slip case! Great idea! And the artwork is really coo, a bit Warhol-esque. But what about the song itself I hear you ask? Well, the thing is with Placebo is that they always sound like Placebo. They’ve found a style and they stick to it. But what is their style called? I’m not sure. But whatever it is, I like it and always have. This is a sing-along-tune with a swearing chorus. What else do you need!

artist:Combichrist Single: MonsterMurderKillber release date: 20th Septem

If you don’t like bad language, you probably won’t like Combichrist (all their albums feature the word f**k at some point). If you don’t like scary looking people, you probably won’t like Combichrist (make-up to the extreme……think musical Zombie’s and you’ll be pretty close). If you don’t like hard dance music, you probably won’t like Combichrist. EBM is their style of music; EBM actually stands for Electronic Body Music which kinda started in countries such as Germany in the early ‘90’s. It was popularised with bands like Skinny Puppy, it had a few industrial elements to it then, but now it’s developed into a totally electronic genre all of its own. Some people still call bands like Combichrist “industrial” they are wrong! That style of music is Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails and even the later material by Gary Numan for example. This is EBM. This band are without any shadow of a doubt, the best in this genre. They obliterate all other pretenders to their EBM crown by simply being harder, faster and more aggressive than all those around them. Covenant and VNV Nation probably quake in their boots when the new Combi album is released. They’ve played some legendary shows at our very own Corporation Rock Club, but on the other hand, of late they’ve not been quite hitting the spot. A show they did there a year or two ago featured as their encore, the lead singer sitting down at a keyboard singing Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’. The crowd obviously thinking they’d be a few opening bars and BANG! A phat heavy electronic version would ensue, but no………..it was done straight from beginning to end. Apparently, it was a lament to the singer’s recent break-up of his marriage?? Must have been emotional. So the critics have been out somewhat of late. With this new single and upcoming album, Combi needed to prove a point and indeed that exactly what they’ve done. No aggressive rasping European accented vocal on this (even though they’re American) it’s a vocoder not dissimilar to Air or even Kraftwerk, mind you that’s pushing it a bit. It’s a pumping track that is a real different sound for them. This is exactly what they needed to do, surprise people but not alienate them. This is very different, but its still Combi through and through. This will be huge on dancefloors in alternative clubs throughout Europe and the US without a doubt.

PSYCHICS

Hey Girls One of my fave ways to detox every day is by dry brushing before I jump in the shower. Rumor has it veganista Natalie Portman is also a huge fan of this quick beauty fix. If you haven’t heard about dry brushing, first get your hands on a brush from your local health for store or wellness shop. Once you have that part down, brush in small circles, toward your heart, each morning, really lightly. It basically helps your body get rid of all those gross toxins. It exfoliates, stimulates skin renewal and offloads toxins.

PSYCHIC GLYNIS Psychic Medium Available for taped readings 1-2-1 or House Parties Please Call for Details

It’s also said to be great for: • Removing cellulite; • Cleansing the lymphatic system; • Removing dead skin layers; • Strengthening the immune system; • Stimulating the hormone and oil-producing glands; • Toning muscles; • Stimulating circulation; • Improving nervous system function; • Digestion. Not a bad day’s work for one little brush! When you’re out shopping for your new best beauty pal, be sure to buy a animal-friendly brush made from vegetable fibres (not boar bristles). It’s also super important to drink eight glasses of fresh spring water daily to help flush toxins out. Coco www.coconjo.com

RED HOT NIGHT AT THE PLATINUM SUITE Last Friday night, on behalf of the Firefighters Charity, was a great success. For a start, the attending Firefighters must have been delighted to attend considering the fact that the audience was around 90% female and I have to say that they ‘scrubbed up’ extremely well. If the male populace of Sheffield had realised this I’m confident that tickets would have been selling at a premium on Ebay. Commenting on the entertainment I must first offer my congratulations to David Hayes who acted as MC for the evening creating a great party atmosphere. The audience were certainly in party mood and there were promotions and prizes on offer with a game of ‘heads and tails’ starting the evening of entertainment and fun. Stephanie King’s Stage Show opened the show and these young entertainers displayed a level of talent and stagecraft beyond their years wowing the audience with slick routines, great songs and costume changes. The Firefighters arrived to an enthusiastic welcome and they joined in with the fun helping to sell raffle tickets and take a bucket collection to raise funds for the ‘Firefighters Charity’. Many people may not be aware that this charity

provides assistance to anyone injured in a fire, it’s not just for firefighters. The Platinum suite is a good venue and the food was simply excellent. It may have been relatively simple fayre, pie and peas and a pud’, but the the pie was delicious with big chunks of quality meat, great pastry and savoury gravy but I can genuinely say I have not had better. There wasn’t a morsal left with any spare being snapped up by satisfied revellers. David Hayes and the firefighters kept the party atmosphere going prior to the arrival on stage of the UK’s number 1 ‘Take That’ tribute show ‘Fake That’. The boys were excellent performing hit after hit to a packed dance floor and an appreciative audience. Before we knew it they were performing the encores and we looked forward to seeing the night out with dancing till 1pm. Staff from G.Casino came along to lend appreciated support to the evening, giving away promotional drinks vouchers and gambling chips and very generously providing a free taxi service to those wanting to carry on the evenings party into the night. This was a great start to the party season as the nights start to draw in and while the news, and other publications, may be full of cuts and politicians disagreeing as usual we at The Mercury Newspaper and Mercury Media will carry on from Friday providing great value entertainment and supporting local charities and businesses. Thanks to everyone who came along and made it such a good night.

BREWERIES A-GO-GO CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2011, launched today (Thursday 16th September 2010), has announced there are now a staggering 767 breweries operating in Britain – that’s four times the number than when the Campaign for Real Ale was founded in 1971. The Good Beer Guide reports that 78 new breweries have opened in the past year. Allowing for closures, that’s a net increase of 56. 7 of these new breweries are from Yorkshire: East Yorkshire – Bird Brain (Howden) North Yorkshire – Mithril (Aldburgh St John), Stokesley (Stokesley) South Yorkshire – Toad (Doncaster) West Yorkshire – Bridgehouse (Keighley), Ridgeside (Leeds), WharfeBank (Pool in Wharedale) Good Beer Guide editor Roger Protz says: “The real ale revolution goes on in spite of all the problems facing the brewing industry such as the often anticompetitive behaviour of the large pub companies, the heavy and continuing rise in tax on beer, grossly unfair competition from supermarkets, and the smoking ban in pubs. Yet, against all the odds, craft breweries continue to sprout like mushrooms at dawn.” “The main reason is a simple one: craft brewers are responding to genuine consumer demand. Beer in pubs may be expensive compared to cheap supermarkets but drinkers are prepared to pay a bit extra for beer with taste and quality. Real ale hits the spot in every way: it has flavour and is made from pure, natural ingredients that are grown mainly here in Britain. More and more people want to think local and drink local and real ale meets that demand.” The Guide spotlights just a few of

the breweries chalking up success: In Yorkshire, another piece of brewing history in the shape of Barnsley Bitter has been restored. The original Barnsley Brewery in Oakwell was bought and closed by John Smith’s in the 1970s. In 2003 Dave and Judi Hughes bought the much-loved beer back to life when they opened Acorn Brewery, using the original yeast culture. Brewing started on a small plant bought from a homebrew pub but demand forced the Hughes to move to new premises with a 20-barrel plant. They have now expanded to a 100-barrel plant and that figure will grow when new fermenting vessels are installed. As well as Barnsley Bitter, Acorn claims the world record for the number of IPAs (India Pale Ale) it has brewed – 36 to date – plus Gorlovka Imperial Stout in honour of Barnsley’s twin town in Ukraine. “These breweries are just the tip of the famous iceberg,” editor Roger Protz says. “The breweries section of the Guide is full of similar success stories of small craft breweries that are booming and growing as a result of beer lovers’ demand. “The British are notoriously bad at celebrating the things we do well but let’s raise a glass to the success of the good old British pint!” 79 new Good Beer Guide pub entries from Yorkshire This year’s guide, which features the best 4,500 real ale pubs in Britain, includes 79 new pub entries for Yorkshire. Roger Protz said, “There are 1012 new pub entries in this year’s Good Beer Guide, 79 of which are from Yorkshire. All pubs are surveyed by the CAMRA members who kindly volunteer to find the best real ale pubs in Britain. This makes the guide fresh and up to date and why is it a must for anyone who loves a good pint in a great pub.” Please email tony.jerome@ camra.org.uk for lists of new pub entries in your area.

WIN £1000 WITH MAGIC MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas

Well another week has flown by, and I’m another week closer to my starring role in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma, which is on at Dinnington’s Lyric Theatre very soon. Well done to you if you’ve won tickets to see the show so far but if you haven’t managed to get hold of any, you can still book via their Box Office. Just visit our website at magicam.co.uk for full details. This week I’ve picked up my costume and we’ve also had our full cast photo shoot, but there is still a lot of practicing to do. Since I’m wearing platform heal cowboy boots I decided to rehearse in them to get used to the way it feels, although I didn’t bank on how much they’d slow me down. As if I wasn’t a step behind everyone else, it’s set me back even more now and not exactly helped with my vertigo. Still, at least I’ll look taller on stage I suppose!! Keep tuned in to my Breakfast Show on Magic every day for updates on this, and also for your chance to win another fantastic prize. How would you like to win £1000 to spend at Atkinson’s Department Store on the Moor at Sheffield? As Noel Edmonds would say on TV’s Deal or No Deal, there are no questions to ask. Simply listen in bright and early all next week, and you could win the chance to spend, spend, spend on the things you like. Tune in and as ever, enjoy the best of the 60s, 70s and more, on the only station that truly specializes in classic hit music across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands – Magic AM, on AM/MW and digital radio. See you in the morning, Trevor

Angler’s Corner

The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1

by Clint Walker

The leaves are changing colour as the wind whips through them, the nights draw in and the temperatures begin to fall. Many fish will soon become ‘out of season’ as they become increasingly difficult to catch, and others will come ‘into season’ as Autumn and Winter progress. Surprisingly, many anglers will also be ‘out of season’ as the many put away their tackle until warmer weather returns! I love the anticipation that this time of year brings; carp having a final feed to put on some weight for the cold nights ahead means that they are often at their heaviest and certainly at their prettiest as they take on winter colours. Perch, chub and big pike become realistic targets for the hardy anglers prepared to stick out the rain, ice, sleet and snow which will shortly arrive... What will you do? I know many fishermen retreat to the trusty commercial venue where a bite is almost guaranteed as a result of the increased bio-mass demanded by match anglers, but many will turn to the rivers. I will be one of them. I look forward to leaving the comfy set up by the mere or lake I fish over summer and travelling light in the hunt for river fish; proper fishing to some. Can you believe I even know some anglers who have NEVER fished in moving water! I hope that isn’t you, you are missing out if it is. My main venues will be the mighty Severn, the Dove and the Churnet. Each of these gives me something different with every visit; the Severn at Shrewsbury means a wide, deep, and heavy flow which has HUGE barbel residing within its depths; the Dove allows me to touch

leger slugs and bread baits for monster chub under my feet and then the Churnet gives great fun trotting a tiny float mid stream for hungry roach which come shimmering into the net almost every cast. This year, if you haven’t fished the rivers before, then I would urge you to give it a go; you will learn so much, its so different to fishing still waters, and I think it’s much more fun. Don’t take my word for it though, go and try it!! My mate Mark Oakes up at the Nitrobaits store in Parson Cross, Sheffield has just returned from a carping trip in France. Mark went out to test some of his own baits and landed some absolutely huge fish on the Nitrobaits brand, which proves they really work! Get more details of the Nitrobaits range by calling into the shop or give Mark a ring on 01143278864. Sharp eyed readers may also have noticed a new name associated with ‘Angler’s Corner’; SAE Bait Developments have backed me for some time now, sponsor my NW column in ‘Carp-Talk’ magazine, and have given me great success wherever I’ve used their baits. Check out what they can do for you at www. saebaitdevelopments.co.uk Remember that we want to feature you in ‘Angler’s Corner’; send your catch reports to me at clint597@btinternet.com to get your picture in the local press. ICE HOCKEY by Sarah Youle On Saturday the Steelers cruised to a 7-0 victory over the Dundee Stars, in front of just 2472 fans. The game had been changed to a non-season ticket game in the weeks beforehand, and sadly that depleted the crowd quite dramatically from the 3807 fans who saw the home opener the week before. Coach Ben Simon’s men, who last weekend beat the Stars in their own rink 6-0, impressed fans with seven goals from seven different goal-scorers. Joey Talbot, the league’s current top scorer with 4 goals in 4 games, netted first for the Steelers in the 7th minute. It looked like the Stars had levelled the scores when a goal from ex-Steeler Dan Ceman seemed to have crossed the line, but it was waved off as being kicked in. Robert Dowd doubled the Steelers’ lead at 12:23, and Jonathan Phillips scored the Steelers’ third goal unassisted at 14:39 to close the scoring for the first period. Defenceman Steve Munn took a 5+10 fighting major, and returned during the second period. Player-Coach Ben Simon opened the scoring for the second period with a short-handed goal at 22:03 to give the Steelers a 4-0 lead, but to the fans delight the team never coasted, and goal number five went in off the stick of Jason Hewitt in the last minute of the second period. The third period saw the majority of penalties go to the Steelers, but they still found time to pop in a couple more goals, Kevin Bolibruck scoring his first goal for the Steelers for 2010-11, and Jeff Legue scored their final goal of the night in the last minute of the game. Sunday brought a trip to Cardiff, and from early on in the game it looked as if the Steelers’ winning run was over, as the Devils scored four unanswered goals. However, player-coach Ben Simon began to turn the team’s fate around, leading by example with a goal at 30:15. In the following six minutes Jeff Legue and Neil Clark also scored , and concerns began to grow amidst the Devils fans. In the third period Joey Talbot lifted the Steelers fans’ hearts further, levelling the scores at 46:17. Sadly after their amazing fight-back, Cardiff’s Justin Sawyer scored the game winning goal in the 58th minute of the game, and this time there was no comeback for Simon and his men. The Steelers’ next home game is Saturday September 18th, vs the Newcastle Vipers. Tickets are available from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield box office. Sheffield Steelers Supporters Club members save £1 on walk-up tickets on production of a valid SSSC membership card (1 card = 1 ticket).

MILLERS SQUANDER EARLY LEAD FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.themillers.co.uk

Rotherham United squandered a 3-0 half-time lead to only pick up a point after a spirited comeback by Burton ensured a 3-3 draw. In another Don Valley goalfest the Millers were 3-0 in front after goals by Kevin Ellison, Ryan Cresswell and Adam Le Fondre but a Shaun Harrad hattrick in the second half earned the visitors a point. Ronnie Moore made one change from the side narrowly beaten at Shrewsbury last weekend, with Paul Warne replacing the injured Tom Elliott. The Millers made a dream start and took the lead inside the first minute.Ellison curled a free kick left-footed from 25 yards underneath Burton ‘keeper Adam Legzdins, who should have done better. Burton responded well to going behind and took the game to the Millers, having the lion’s share of possession for spells without creating any clear chances. Rotherham soaked up the Burton pressure and then struck another blow on 34 minutes to double their lead.Exodus Geohaghon launched a long throw into the penalty area, and skipper Cresswell was on hand to head past Legzdins from 12 yards for his third of the season. The home side were clinical in front of goal and netted a third on the break after 38 minutes. Warne released Ellison down the right wing, and his pinpoint cross allowed Le Fondre to convert from inside the six yard box. Burton grabbed themselves

TROphy is a big success

a lifeline a minute into the second half. A long ball forward deceived Creswell who clipped the ball past Andy Warrington, allowing Harrad a simple tap-in. Substitute Jimmy Phillips forced Johnny Mullins into a lunging tackle in the penalty area on the hour mark to leave referee Graham Salisbury no option but to give Burton a penalty. Harrad stepped up to hammer beyond Warrington to make it 3-2. On 70 minutes Danny Harrison worked himself some space 25 yards from goal but his rasping drive skimmed off the surface and glided just past the near post. Burton missed a great chance to level on 79 minutes when a Phillips cross wasn’t dealt with by Geohaghon. The ball fell kindly to Harrad eight yards out but his shot appeared to be tipped onto the bar and over by Warrington. That proved to be the Millers’ final warning when Harrad did deliver his hat-trick on 83 minutes. A sweeping move by the Brewers saw Gregg Pearson lay the ball into the path of Harrad who finished coolly beyond a helpless Warrington. Rotherham United: Warrington; Mullins (Holden 65), Cresswell c, Geohaghon, Newey, Law (Pope 85), J. Taylor, Harrison (Bradley 77), Ellison, Le Fondre, Warne. This week sees the return of that almost impossible puzzle, the Ayr Gold Cup. Just consider these circumstances: There are still 173 declarations (on Tuesday morning). The lowest rating in my system is 126 and the top is 206 so they are all sandwiched quite tightly together. Then there are several trainers who are mob-handed with entries, many of whom target this race all year e.g. Dandy Nicholls, Richard Fahey, Kevin Ryan, Tim Easterby, Michael Dods, Jim Goldie etc. Several of the entries have either run really well at the track before or in the race itself (e.g. Jimmy Styles who won last year, Barney McGrew 2nd last year). Also there are still a few raiders from Ireland in the mix. Add in Linda Perratt’s entries (she trains at the track), some top southern trainers throwing their caps into the ring, the bias of the draw, the vagaries of the weather and its effect on ground conditions, not to mention pace in the race considerations, jockeyship etc and you end up with what is, in effect, just a lottery and one with some 25+ possible outcomes. As if this wasn’t quite enough, you also need to factor in horses coming into the race at the top of their game, e.g. David Barron’s Poet’s Place and Roger Charlton’s Definightly. I think that, for those of you that still want to have a go at this race, the best that I can do is to quote my top ratings and leave the decision in your hands. Personally I shall not get involved as I don’t think that punters stand any chance at all.

With the large number of entries many of these are likely to be balloted out, so check on the day. Those that don’t get a run in the Gold Cup become eligible to run in the Silver Cup earlier on the card (146 entries)but, because of the above factors, almost by definition this race is equally impossible to solve. The ratings above can also be used for that race but you must strike out the non runners. However, in my opinion both races fall squarely into the “too difficult” category and therefore my advice is to leave well alone.

AYR GOLD CUP LOTTERY

Last week’s results: There were 9 selections, 3 non runners and six losers. I am afraid it was a very poor result by any standards. What I can never quite grasp is how, when nothing in my selection process is changed in any way, they will run really well one week and then run like pigs the next. I know they are not machines but some modicum of consistency would be helpful to our cause. They say it is always darkest just before the dawn. I hope they’re right (whoever they are!) as I am becoming very frustrated with how my selections are running. There can be many reasons for poor performances however. At this time of year factors such as “autumn” horses (horses that come to hand late in the season), the natural development of younger horses (they all progress at different rates) coupled with changes in ground conditions tend to mean that picking winners can be doubly difficult. Nevertheless Rewilding was a major disappointment. He was by far and away my strongest pick for some weeks. I could just not envisage any of the others getting near him. In the event he was settled well off the pace (some may say too well Frankie!) and could never land a blow. He looked a very pale shadow of the horse seen a t York in the Great Voltigeur. Now Mahmood Zarooni is saying he wants longer between his races and that he may not run again this year. That piece of information would have been handy to know before Saturday’s event so I presume that they did not realise this beforehand.

The Millers’ Broadsword Trophy kicked off in style with the first game between Thornhill Primary School and Maltby St Mary’s Catholic Primary School. The Broadsword Trophy is knockout competition involving 16 teams representing primary schools from across Rotherham. The wining school will receive sporting equipment for their P.E department from competition sponsor Broadsword UK. Millers’ Assistant Participation Officer Adam Taylor said: “The kids loved watching the Millers’ in the first half and couldn’t wait to play on the pitch at Don Valley, with both teams coming off with smiles on their faces.” Saturday’s game turned out to be an end-to-end affair with both teams having chances to score and giving their opponents keeper lots to do. In the end it was Maltby St Mary who scored the only goal of the match in front of more than 3500 spectators. Jason Thompson, Broadsword UK’s Sales Director came to watch the Broadsword Trophy and was impressed by the skills on show: “The youngsters played really well, I would like to congratulate Maltby St Mary’s on winning the match and making it through to the 2nd round, I’d also like to say well done to Thornhill who kept the Maltby ‘keeper very busy in what was a tight game.” You will be able to follow the Broadsword Tropy in your Millers’ matchday programme or sign up to Millers’ Monthly, our new monthly email to see club news, updates from the Community Sports Trust, offers from the Red & White Shop and loads more. CRESWELL STRIKE SINKS RAMS

MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk The Blades were mightily impressive in recording a second successive victory and clean sheet. At Derby, Gary Speed’s side dominated from start to finish. Chances were plentiful but the Blades had to rely on Richard Cresswell’s first goal of the season to secure the points. Once again there were signs of a different style and the United fans who made the trip sung loud and proud throughout and after the fixture. The success against Preston a fortnight earlier gave boss Speed the luxury of naming an unchanged side for the lunchtime kick-off. Calve recovered from cramp to take his place at right-back which meant fit-again Morgan had to be content with a place on the bench, former Ram Kozluk dropped out of the squad. Derby made one change with Cywka recalled but home chief Clough only named six substitutes. Wearing black shirts, white shorts and black socks - the exact opposite of the home side - United conceded a corner within the first minute whilst the early action was congested in midfield. The visiting side’s first chance was the result of Montgomery robbing the ball from Roberts. Ward progressed down the right and waited to deliver his cross but Evans’ shot was deflected over by Barker. There were early signs of nervousness in Derby’s rearguard - helped by United’s tigerish start - and the pace of Ward almost helped him on to a long Simonsen clearance but the covering Roberts eliminated the danger. However, it took just 15 minutes to open up the Rams defence and take the lead. Britton and Montgomery exchanged passes before the latter played the ball wide for Calve to beat Moxey and deliver a tempting cross which eluded Barker and Leacock but not CRESSWELL, who arrived late at the back post. Derby’s half-hearted appeals for penalties - against Nosworthy’s challenge on Cywka and Ertl’s alleged handball - were waved away as the Blades continued to have the majority of the attacking action. Three times within six minutes United went close. On 27 minutes Calve was again involved before Evans and Ward linked up and although the latter found the target he was called offside. Then, on a break, Britton found space and then Ward with a pass but Bywater saved a stabbed effort from Evans following a cross from the right. With 33 minutes gone, United should have made it 2-0 but their efforts and impressive play were not rewarded. Ward fed Evans, he beat Barker all ends up, but his shot was blocked by Bywater, whilst from the rebound the Welshman skilfully picked out the advancing Ertl, but the Austrian, despite being in space, failed to find the target. Close to the break, rare Derby attacks saw Brayford’s cross fail to find a head and then Nosworthy cleared up a Cywka delivery, both from the right, whilst the final chance of the half fell to the Blades and Calve’s cross saw Cresswell rise above Brayford but his header was just wide of Bywater’s left post.

The first period was full value for money for the travelling Blades fans and the second period started similarly. The first opportunity saw Savage’s shot deflected wide but United were soon back in the driving seat. Crosses from both right and left failed to find black shirts, then Cresswell delivered across the face of goal, again without a finishing touch. On 53 minutes, good work from Ward, cutting in from the right, ended with the lively Evans shooting across the face of goal and just wide. Derby created a good chance on the hour but Green was off target despite having a free header from a Commons cross. Savage was withdrawn as the substitutions began and Spaniard Bueno’s first taste of English football resulted in Nosworthy clattering into him - the United defender was booked for the challenge. Speed’s first change was introducing Quinn for Evans, with the striker receiving an ovation from both Blades fans and his manager as he ambled off. Speed could have claimed the substitution was a master stroke had the new arrival netted just moments later. Britton’s 40-yard ball picked out Ward, who held off his markers and laid off with a backheel which saw Quinn drill an effort just wide. Shortly after, a Calve cross was just behind Ward, who could not direct his header goalwards. Lowton replaced the tiring Calve and the Blades had another chance to double the lead on 74 minutes. Following a Barker mistake, Ward’s cross found Montgomery arriving late but his chance was deflected wide for a corner. Simonsen saved and held a 25yard shot from Commons, the home side’s first effort on target, which drew sarcastic applause from the majority of the crowd, whilst Roberts was booked as he was carried off on a stretcher following a cynical foul on Quinn. The Irish midfielder was back on his feet soon after, cutting in from the right to create a chance for Ward to shoot just wide. It was the hard-working Ward’s last action as he was replaced by Yeates as Speed’s final change. Mainly due to the Roberts injury, five minutes of added time was signalled but again the home side didn’t look much of a threat. Cywka fired well over and in the final action, Simonsen came off his line to collect a deep free-kick from his opposite number. The Blades fans were appreciative of the efforts at the final whistle and gave the players a standing ovation. Derby: Bywater, Brayford, Roberts (Doyle 81), Green (Martin 72), Barker, Leacock, Savage (Bueno 61), Commons, Bailey, Cywka, Moxey. Unused: Deeney, Anderson, Pringle. Blades: Simonsen, Jordan, Nosworthy, Montgomery, Ertl, Britton, Evans (Quinn 63), Calve (Lowton 74), Cresswell, Ward (Yeates 86), Bartley. Unused: Morgan, Bogdanovic, Taylor, Aksalu.

SPEED ASSURED BY VICTORY

MANAGER REACTION www.sufc.co.uk Gary Speed watched his team serve up a display of measured authority in the 1-0 win at Pride Park, the first away of the season, and tried hard afterwards to hide his sense of satisfaction. The rookie boss was careful to ensure that expectations should be kept in perspective but had no option but to be satisfied with what his side showed: “I am very pleased to come here, get a win and keep a clean sheet because they were our objectives, and the way in which we won was nice, too. “If there was a negative it was that we didn’t score more goals but the positive thing is that we created a lot more chances than in previous games, and if you are only one in front there is always a danger you can be caught. “I was a bit annoyed at half-time because I thought we scored and then took our foot off the pedal a little bit when Derby had not really been in the game, but we went out again and continued to create opportunities.” Richard Cresswell’s winner was his first of the campaign and Speed acknowledged that it was the result of the players’ hard work in terms of them putting into practice what they had done on the training pitch: “Jean Calve was involved again after scoring first time out and he and Stephen Jordan are good at getting forward. Leon Britton’s role in front of the defence is important in that he allows the fullbacks to join up with the attack. “We have been working a lot on the quality of delivery because against Preston we had about 28 crosses but they lacked the quality we showed today - and we have also worked on loading players up at the back post which ‘Cressy’ showed when he scored. “Getting back to back wins is good for confidence but we haven’t pulled up any trees at the moment and we will continue to work on things we didn’t do so well today. The mood is positive but cautious.” Another bonus for Speed was the continued success of the Bartley/ Nosworthy centre-back partnership which resulted in fit again Chris Morgan staying on the bench: “Leaving Chris out was a massively difficult decision but he is one of the best pros I have ever worked with and when I told him about it on Friday there was no problem. “He congratulated each one of the lads and there was no-one offering more encouragement to the lads throughout - a great attitude and the one we need from everyone all season if we are to succeed.” The travelling Blades had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and had the chance to out sing the home support throughout: “The fans were brilliant today and helped us get the result and I hope they sing like that on Tuesday night against Scunthorpe.”

Chengdu Blades took another emphatic step towards promotion back to the Chinese Super League, Central Coast Mariners won but Ferencvaros suffered a heavy defeat. HULL CITY SCOUTING REPORT by The Mercury Scout

When I saw Hull City play a couple of weeks ago they used a 4-4-1-1 formation throughout the game. Initially Koren played just behind Simpson, and the two central midfield players sat deep. Width was provided by the two wide midfield players. Hull made three second half substitutions, however they maintained their shape throughout. Hull have changed their management, and also their playing staff quite considerably, after suffering relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season. They have a lot of new signings and several former reserve team players have been brought through to play at first team level. The team as a whole do not look to have built an understanding or to have gelled together into a cohesive effective unit as yet. Collectively Hull worked very hard throughout the game, but they lacked creativity and forward penetration. Also their long distribution was generally inaccurate and much of their shorter passing was inconsistent. As a result they gave away possession far too easily. With their opponents playing with a very narrow diamond in the middle of the park, Hull should have made far more use of the space in the wide channels. However, they were not able to break quickly enough and this enabled the visitors to get adequate cover across to close down and break up Hull’s play. The Hull wide players provided very little width, rarely getting past their opposite numbers on the outside to deliver crosses into the box. The quality of the deliveries into the box when they played the ball early was also, at best, inconsistent. Far too often the midfield unit were forced to play the ball back to the defenders to retain possession. The back four would then play the ball long with very little accuracy down towards lone striker Simpson. Hull lack any sort of physical presence in attack. When free kicks were played long from the back Kilbane had to come inside from wide on the left to compete for the ball. In open play, even when the ball was played close to Simpson he did not have the physical height and presence to compete for the ball in the air or to retain possession with his back to goal. The introduction of Barnby as a substitute introduced much needed energy and drive, but still did not provide an outlet for the defenders to knock the ball long up to in the air to. Although there is a lack of height and physical strength in attack, there is good height and strength through the spine of the rest of the team. Pace could be provided by the full backs, but this was rarely evident in this game. Strikers Simpson and Koren can also be quick, but showed very little of their pace in this game. Both central defenders are reasonably mobile. Ashbee is somewhat one paced in the middle of the park. Although not lacking in pace, the back four played relatively deep, both when defending and when in possession and occasionally they would step up to catch their opponents offside. On the whole the defence looked reasonably solid, although there were a couple of occasions in the second half after the opposing side had made substitutions, that they were split open by creative forward passes.

points away from promotion back to the top flight. Central Coast Mariners registered their second consecutive home win with a 1-0 victory over a ten man Melbourne Heart side in their week six Hyundai A-League encounter. A lone Daniel McBreen strike was enough to split the sides and guarantee, albeit temporarily, top spot on the Hyundai A-League table. Following the remainder of the weekend’s fixtures, the Mariners dropped to third, but have suffered just one defeat in six games. Meanwhile, over in Hungary, Ferencvaros suffered a first half sending off on their way to a 6-0 reversal at Ujpest, which sees them drop to seventh in the NB I. Some defending from set pieces was very sloppy with markers allowing the players they were picking up to get away and have free headers on goal. Most of the distribution from the back was played long in the general direction of the striker, but with little accuracy. Cooper tended to be the most likely player to come out to make the first challenge with Zayatte covering behind. All of the back four are reasonably mobile and they did not look to be stretched for pace. Neither full back pushed on far enough down the wide channel to go beyond the wide midfield player or the opposing full back, but they would support from behind from time to time. Hull have good height across the back four and easily contained anything the opposing team played long. The goalkeeper made a couple of good stops and he was alert to clear up anything played in behind the back four. When kicking, initially he targeted Simpson down the middle, but when this proved fruitless he started to target Kilbane more in positions on the left side. After Kilbane’s substitution, Garcia could be targeted down the right side. The central midfield pair both tend to sit deep and concentrate on breaking up their opponents play and protecting the back four. This they did very well although Ashbee can be one paced and struggle to track opponents with good mobility. Occasionally when Ashbee and Cairney pushed forward they could pose a threat when striking the ball from distance, but these opportunities were few and far between. There was very little forward creative play into the lone striker or into what little space there was behind the the opposing team’s back four. When Hull tried to build through the middle of the park they did so mainly down their left side, but tended to be too pedestrian in their movement off the ball and were closed down effectively by a hard working opposing midfield diamond. The wide midfield players provided very little width and very little outlet. Neither of them attempted to go past the opposing full backs on the outside and they delivered very little service into the box. The wide midfield players were prepared to track back and cover in front of their respective full backs, but their failure to impose themselves on the opposing full backs in attacking positions allowed their opponents to provide most of their team’s wide options when going forward. Simpson ploughed a lone furrow for much of the game, but he did not compete well to challenge for the ball in the air when Hull went long from front to back. On the rare occasions when Simpson did receive the ball into feet, he was easily contained by the the opposing team’s central defenders, and he received very little in the way of supporting play from the midfield players making runs through the channels. Occasionally when Koren did this he was almost invariably flagged offside. Hull achieved very little penetration behind the the opposing team’s back four. Throughout the game their best chance of scoring a goal looked to be from set pieces with the big defenders coming up to pose a threat. Simpson’s replacement, Barnby, combined his skill and experience with much needed drive and energy to threaten more than had been the case before his introduction, but even so the opposing team’s goalkeeper remained vastly under worked with most of Hull’s efforts being from distance and going wide.

OWLS LOSE OUT ON TOP POINT MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday lost their grip at the summit of League One as Carlisle leapfrogged above them with a comfortable 1-0 win at Hillsborough. Craig Curran scored the only goal of the game late in the opening period but in truth, the scoreline flattered the Owls, who failed to assert any true authority on this first against second contest. Alan Irvine made one change from the side that lost at Brentford last time out, with Clinton Morrison starting up front alongside Marcus Tudgay. That move aside, Irvine kept faith with the same team that suffered that maiden league loss at Griffin Park. The Owls started brightly enough, with Tudgay drilling a low drive across goal that sent a scare through the visitors’ rearguard before Carlisle almost struck first on four minutes. Francois Zoko sent Gary Madine racing in on goal with an accurate feed only to see Nicky Weaver move swiftly off his line to deny the striker with his legs. The Blues then enjoyed a steady spell of possession that showed promise but delivered little and Wednesday came close to taking advantage when Chris Sedgwick’s goalbound half volley was charged down at the last by Sean McDaid. Carlisle, though, were undaunted and continued to pose a real threat. Zoko dragged a decent chance wide before Madine got a strong header in on goal that was diverted from danger by Lewis Buxton. But the more the visitors saw of the ball, the more likely a goal loomed and it duly arrived on 36 minutes when Curran found

time to cut in from the left flank to smash across a packed defence and into the back of Weaver’s net. It was no more than the Cumbrian side deserved and indeed, it could have been two right on half time but Weaver thwarted Zoko when the rangy hitman advanced down the right side of the box and pulled the trigger. Wednesday desperately needed more zip in the early throes of the second half but Carlisle were clearly determined to see the job through. Twice inside a minute they came within a whisker of doubling their tally - first when Curran’s flicked header brought the best out of Weaver, moments before Darren Potter spared Darren Purse’s blushes when he cleared a wayward sidefooter from the skipper off the line. Irvine introduced Paul Heffernan and James O’Connor just after the hour and the Owls enjoyed their best spell of the game, albeit without calling keeper Adam Collin into action. Tommy Spurr went close with a rasping drive that whistled the wrong side of the post and O’Connor snatched a halfchance wide but for all their huff and puff, the hosts could not break down an increasingly resolute rearguard and Carlisle returned home with three merited points and an unbeaten league record intact. Owls: Weaver, Buxton, Purse, Beevers, Spurr, Sedgwick (O’Connor 63), Potter, Coke, Teale (Miller 77), Tudgay, Morrison (Heffernan 61) Unused substitutes: Jameson, Otsemobor, Jones, Palmer Carlisle: Collin, Simek, McDaid, Thirlwell, Taiwo (Marshall 89), Zoko (Robson 83), Curran, Madine, Berrett, Chester, Michalik Unused substitutes: Caig, Murphy, Kavanagh, Price, Kane

LESSONS TO BE LEARNED MANAGERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk

Owls manager Alan Irvine expressed his frustration in the aftermath of Wednesday’s first home defeat of the new campaign, following Carlisle United’s 1-0 win at Hillsborough. Craig Curran’s first half strike was the difference between the two sides, as the visitors maintained their unbeaten start to the league season and cemented their place at the top of the League One table. Irvine said: “It was a thoroughly disappointing afternoon. We were positive in the opening stages and it looked like we might cause them one or two problems, but as the game went on we became more and more complacent. “We made bad decisions both when we did have the ball, and when we didn’t and conceded a number of silly, needless set pieces. “Things didn’t seem to change that much after the break, so we changed the shape and then a little later the personnel.” The Wednesday gaffer was also quick to acknowledge Carlisle’s professional performance, but still maintained that things could have been a whole lot different had the Owls utilised possession in the final third more effectively. “We never really tested their goalkeeper and that’s always disappointing when you’re the home side,” Irvine added. “We had the ball in their half for large periods in the second half but just couldn’t seem to find that killer pass. “But, at the end of the day, there are no excuses for our performance. We did all the tactical and preparation work on Carlisle prior to the game, and we just weren’t good enough. “We’ve got to learn a lesson from games like these. If you get sloppy you’re going to get punished, and that’s what has happened this afternoon.”

MICHAEL PREPARES FOR CHARITY RUN

MANAGERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk Former Sheffield Wednesday player Michael Gray is taking part in a gruelling half marathon to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity later this month. The 36-year-old, who left the club this summer when he retired from professional football, will be among the 54,000 runners attempting the 13.1 mile Great North Run in Newcastle on 19 September. Michael decided to use the opportunity to fundraise for the hospital’s charity after seeing the amazing work carried out on a number of squad visits to the wards. He said: “During my time as a player at Sheffield Wednesday I was inspired by the partnership between the club, The Children’s Hospital, Sheffield and its charity and this is my way of giving something back. “It’s a long way to run and will be a big challenge so I am hoping that members of the public especially Wednesday fans get behind me and donate generously so that the money raisedcan make a real difference for young patients being treated at the hospital.” It’s not the first time the former Owls player has made a donation to The Children’s Hospital Charity with £3,600, the total payment from his weekly BBC blog last season, also being used to help the hospital. Cheryl Ridge, a fundraiser at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said:”We are delighted that Michael has been so touched by our special partnership with the club, and that even in retirement is thinking of ways he can support the work of the hospital and the charity. “We would like to wish him all the best with the run and say a big thank you on behalf of all our young patients.” If you would like to add your donation to Michael Gray’s Great North Run challenge please visit: http://www.justgiving.com/ Mickey-Gray

FAMILIAR FEELING

FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob It was a familiar feeling as I left Hillsborough late on Saturday afternoon. It was a mixture of frustration with the lacklustre potency of Wednesday going forward, the lethargy that seemed to swarm through our midfield and the scars I now have on my tongue from biting it. The latter sensation was caused by a duo of blabbering women that I had the misfortune to sit in front of. I have to maintain an air of political correctness if I want my article to be printed so I will just say that they were very inept in their general audio output. If I was a less fair headed man I would have rolled up my programme and determinedly backhanded both of them. Now I have got that off my chest, I can continue with my critique of Saturday’s festivities. A promising start unfolded without any glint edged chances developing (no idea what that phrase means in any other context). The confidence gained from rebuffing the early pressure lead to an increased element of composed play that looked like it gave the Carlisle team renewed aplomb. They duly began to force us back into our own third as their winning goal came from a nothing inswinging cross into the box. No goals in 180 minutes is a firm slap in the face of complacency but we cannot afford too many ‘wake up calls’ before we miss the bus all together. Sheffield Wednesday, thanks to the mostly horrible century we’ve had so far, are a club that needs to have that little bit of momentum to get us through vital stages of the season. We have never been the sort to pluck ourselves out of bad positions that were seemingly hopeless situations. A few more barren games and we’ll be swimming against the tide once again and if off the field problems persist we might have a limb or two tied behind our back for good measure. The talent in this squad is arguably better than that of last season, the manager, I’m sure, is a good one. The fans, I know, are some of the best in the land so we all have to dig in and keep going. 6th in the table is not a portent of doom but I’ll tell you this now, if we slip into the bottom half of the table the psychological implications of that will be damaging, maybe even terminal.
