ENJOY THE FLAVOURS OF ITALY IN SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE Shoppers will experience a distinctly Italian vibe in Sheffield City centre this week with the arrival of a specialist Italian market. To tantalise those taste buds, the traders will be offering Sheffielders authentic Italian foods including cheeses, pasta, meats and cakes. The market will be held on Fargate on Friday 24, Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September. Market organisers, ‘Italia in Piazza’, will bring around 18 colourful gazebos
to Sheffield. It is a travelling market that has visited many cities around England and Wales, and all the foods on sale are imported from Italy on a weekly basis, guaranteeing freshness and quality. Cllr Roger Davison, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport, Tourism and City Centre events said: “On previous visits, this specialist Italian market has proved extremely popular, and it adds to our portfolio of regular outdoor
city centre markets. We are continually trying to attract people into the city centre and offer them something a bit unusual when they are here”. Simon Faro, Director of Italia In Piazza, said: “We have brought our market to Sheffield before, and it was very well attended. We pride ourselves on offering high quality, authentic Italian foods which are enjoyed by everyone and I hope that the people of Sheffield have fun browsing and sampling the products we offer.”
There will be a huge choice of Italian food, including cheeses, olives, cured meats, pasta, herbs, olive oils, balsamic vinegars and speciality breads. And for those with a sweet tooth, sweet treats will include biscotti, cakes and pastries, as well as famous cake Torrone. For shoppers who get a bit peckish on the way round, there will be plenty of ready-to-eat snacks and meals including, sausages, hand made Sicilian rice balls & focaccia pizzas.

Radio Nightingale is on the search for new volunteers who can be involved helping to provide our special service to cheer up the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. You don’t need any expert knowledge or technical expertise to be successful at Radio Nightingale, most important is a willingness to learn and be part of a team. It has been medically proven that ‘doing good’ can give you a heightened sense of well being and a stronger immune system so volunteering is good for the soul. Plus of course it can also put you on track to improve your career. Whether you’re currently studying, in work or out of work volunteering is a great way to develop new skills, build your confidence and show future employers that you’ve got drive and initiative. COPLEYʼS COLUMN I have had a Facebook account for a few months now. I opened this account initially in order to glean information for this column about future events and bits of gossip to share. However, I discovered something last week which I found most disturbing. The lovely Sunny Daye wrote that her mum, Marjorie had finally succumbed after a short illness and received well over a hundred messages of condolence. However, I was amazed to discover that one person had actually clicked on the ‘like’ button suggesting that they were pleased with the posting. I assumed that this had been a mistake until I read that this individual had further posted a message stating that he was glad to hear the news, at the same time making very uncomplimentary about Sunny’s recently departed mum. As one of Sunny’s closest friends, I was quick to post my total disgust on the page, and went to the sick person’s webpage. I was amazed to discover that I knew of the person involved and was really surprised. After a few more postings, repeating the previous filth,
and rigorous responses from me, I was informed that the person I believed to be the guilty party was in fact totally innocent and was the victim of a ‘hacker’ who had hijacked this poor man’s site and a disclaimer by the genuine man was posted. Having savaged this poor innocent man, I was quick to apologise profusely. If the person responsible for making these insensitive comments at a time of enormous family grief is reading this column, I urge him to seek immediate medical help from the department that deals with mental health. In my home town of Dronfield, there has been much conjecture recently, particularly amongst the female gender, as to who is the shortest adult, the two serious contenders both my friends. Eleni Headleand and Michelle Emmens faced each other, or more to the point went back to back, at Dwarfstock outside the White Swan, where photographic evidence was obtained to settle the matter, once and for all. The first shots showed Michelle to be the smaller of the two by a short head. A steward’s enquiry was lodged and all footwear

was removed to finally come up with a clear result. Once again, Michelle emerged the undisputed champion, and graciously promised never to call Elleni ‘short arse’ ever again I was pleased to invite Adrian Fazackerly, proprietor of top pub/restaurant, The Dusty Miller, at Barlborough, to my weekly celebrity breakfast at the Chantry Hotel in Dronfield, and he was in good company with Sunny Daye, Keith Tallis (The Frog Prince), Diana Edwards and Gary Sinclair. What I did not expect was him to pay the entire bill for everyone. Adrian is a valued friend and his generosity was tremendous. Thanks Adrian, you may rest assured I shall be returning the favour. After breakfast, Diana and I attended Sunny’s mum’s funeral, conducted by our local vicar, Dick Dove, who greeted me by saying “ Hello Howard, are you behaving yourself? The price of fame or is it infamy. Sunny Daye is appearing this Thursday at the White Swan, Dronfield this Thursday night, and I am sure that some of her many followers from Sheffield will be making the short trip over the border into ‘God’s Country’
Nigel Planer will be joining the cast for the forthcoming audio/ visual spectacular – Doctor Who Live. Planer will play the part of Vorgenson, a character exclusively adapted for the tour by the television programme’s Executive Producer and Lead Writer Steven Moffat. The new character is described as an ‘inter-galactic showman’ who is the Doctor’s biggest fan. Nigel Planer comments: I’m incredibly excited to be joining Doctor Who Live and this role is something of a boyhood dream come true. My character Vorgenson, who has been developed specially for the show by Steven Moffat, is the Greatest Showman in the Galaxy and using his incredible invention, ‘The Minimiser’, he can make any Doctor Who character appear on stage as part of his travelling show dedicated to his hero. This live tour brings all the magic of the TV show together with a host of incredible effects. I hope that I can survive visiting nine cities in October sharing a stage with eleven Doctor Who Monsters and a flying Dalek in tow! The stage show will follow Vorgenson on an inter-galactic journey as he summons monsters in his Minimiser for the audience to see. Matt Smith will appear as the Doctor in specially filmed sequences to be shown on a giant screen on stage. Craig Stanley, Doctor Who Live’s Producer says: This show has something for everyone - Doctor Who fans, of course - but also anyone with a love of incredible illusions, immersive storytelling, magical music, scary monsters, and intergalactic heroes. In a further announcement, the producers have revealed that Nick Briggs, famous for voicing some of the scariest Doctor Who monsters including the Daleks and Cybermen, is onboard to replicate his voice talents live on stage every night. Briggs will also portray Winston Churchill, who is summoned by Vorgenson through his Minimiser. Doctor Who Live will also feature a spectacular array of stunts and illusions designed by Britain’s premiere illusionists, The Twins. Audiences will be in for a treat as they witness a flying Dalek. The Twins have come to prominence
WESTLIFE
Following phenomenal ticket sales Westlife have announced a second date in Sheffield on Tuesday 29th March 2011 – tickets went on sale last Friday (17th September). After a hugely successful UK tour in 2010, Kings of the charts Westlife will be hitting the road once again in March 2011 to wow audiences up and down the country. The boys will return to Sheffield when they play two nights at the Motorpoint Arena on the 28th & 29th March 2011. Revered for their spectacular live shows, created with visionary William Baker (Kylie, Leona, Bjork), the band will be visiting arenas in 9 cities throughout March 2011. The shows will include the band’s biggest hits as well as tracks off their 2009 double platinum album Where We Are and from the brand new album they are currently in the studio working on, due for release in November 2010. Westlife are among the world’s most prolific touring acts, with nine sell out tours already under their belts, including playing to a sell out crowd at the legendary Croke Park in Dublin. They have sold more tickets at London’s Wembley Arena than any other act and have played a record number
in the last few years by designing the illusion of flying without wires, and they have a reputation for large scale stunts including making an elephant disappear live on stage. They have taught magic tricks to the likes of Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow. The new stage show, based upon the BBC’s smash-hit, awardwinning series Doctor Who, promises to deliver a spectacular audio/visual experience featuring live music, special effects and appearances from the show’s most popular monsters including Daleks, Cybermen, Scarecrows, Oods and Silurian. With an out-of-this-world set, Doctor Who Live will feature special FX, optical illusions and spectacular pyrotechnics building to an epic finale. Specially edited video clips, drawn from the TV Programme will be shown on a massive screen and accompanied by the music of longtime Doctor Who composer Murray Gold. These iconic scores will be brought to life by a live band on stage. Doctor Who Live has been conceived as a fully immersive music and monsters spectacular and promises the same excitement, adventure and suspense that viewers have come to expect from the TV programme. Please note that actors from the TV series will not be appearing live on stage. Matt Smith will be appearing on video screen. Tickets for Doctor Who Live at Motorpoint Arena on 12th & 13th October are available online through www.motorpointarena. co.uk, through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or in person at the Arena Box Office.

Divine Golf Moses and Jesus were in a threesome playing golf one day. Moses pulled up to the tee and drove a long one. The ball landed in the fairway, but rolled directly toward a water hazard. Quickly Moses raised his club, the water parted and it rolled to the other side, safe and sound. Next, Jesus strolled up to the tee and hit a nice long one directly toward the same water hazard. It landed right in the center of the pond and kind of hovered over the water. Jesus casually walked out on the pond and chipped the ball onto the green. The third guy got up and randomly whacked the ball. It headed out over the fence and into oncoming traffic on a nearby street. It bounced off a truck and hit a nearby tree. From there, it bounced onto the roof of a shack close by and rolled down into the gutter, down the drain spout, out onto the fairway and straight toward the aforementioned pond. On the way to the pond, the ball hit a stone and bounced out over the water onto a lily pad, where it rested quietly. Suddenly a very large bullfrog jumped up on a lily pad and snatched the ball into his mouth. Just then, an eagle swooped down and grabbed the frog and flew away. As they passed over the green, the frog squealed with fright and dropped the ball, which bounced right into the cup for a hole in one. Moses turned to Jesus and said, “I hate playing with your Dad.” Female Golfers Two women are playing golf on a Saturday morning... The first of the twosome tees off anf watches in horror as her ball hurtles directly towards a group of blokes playing the next hole hitting one of the men full-on... who immediately crumples to the ground, both hands clenched firmly between his legs. The women rush over... “I’m really, really sorry,” says the woman who teed off. “please allow me to help you - I am a physical therapist and I can ease the pain if you’d allow me.” “Oooh - ahhh - oooooh!” screams the man, writhing around on the floor with his hands still firmly entrenched between his legs. “I’ll be all right in a couple of minutes love...” Persistant the woman pins him down and unbuckles his belt. Then she loosens his trousers, slips her hand inside and massages his groin. “How does that feel?” the woman asks. “It feels absolutely great,” says the man, smiling, “but my thumb still hurts like buggery!”

ACE IN LACUNA THE HOLE! COIL! New York based musician ACEY SLADE (Murderdolls / Dope / Trashlight Vision) is set to unleash upon the world his new full-length solo / band project - THE DARK PARTY. Cleverly bringing together and stretching boundaries between both Rock and Electronic genres, Slade and his new band have produced a collection of songs that are both sonically and emotionally exciting, enabling him to smash open the doors to another blistering musical chapter in his already colourful career. There are so few artists who are really willing to put themselves out there and show other sides of their creativity.” Acey explains. “As a guy who is known for doing three chords and a cloud of thunder type guitar rock, I really took a chance by doing this album. And what I’m most proud of is the fact that I took this chance. To take big risks means risking falling on your face. By just taking this risk, I’ve already accomplished what I wanted to do.” Produced by English Drum and Bass producer Shaun Morris (DJ Stakka), this is without a doubt the singer’s most reflective and daring piece of work yet and one that will see him challenge himself from here forward. “The idea behind being a ‘solo artist’ is that I can change direction from album to album and that’s what I intend to do! Each album should be bit different from the next.” Mmmm, this sounds interesting check out his new band in Sheffield at the Corp on the 27th. 5th BIRTHDAY AT THE PLUG Five years ago Sheffield witnessed the birth of one of the most exciting new venues ever seen round these parts, born out of the remnants of club .zero, The Plug smashed it’s way onto the scene. By bringing artists from every corner of the musical world from The Prodigy to The Fun Lovin’ Criminals, The Streets to The Ukela Orchestra of Great Britain, spreading them over three seperate rooms and finishing off with ground breaking club nights The Plug have become a cornerstone of Sheffield entertainment and late night frivolity. To celebrate the last five years The Plug have esembled an astonishing line up for your aural pleasure, including... CHASE AND STATUS (DJ Set) How many artists / producers can count Jay Z, Snoop Dogg and Pharell as fans as well as drum and bass’ finest Andy C, Hype and Pendulum; enjoy heavy rotation in the hands of dub-step royalty such as N-Type and Skream; and have each release enthusiastically supported by Annie Mac and Zane Lowe? This is what Saul Milton and Will Kennard, producing under the name Chase & Status, have achieved in 5 years, and the highlight of their young career so far has been their debut LP ‘More Than Alot’ which has helped turned them into a unique urban phenomenon, and the biggest crossover act to come out of the underground since Pendulum.
Italian alt / gothic rockers come back to Sheffield at the Corp on the 28th in support of their Billboard top 20 album ‘Shadow Life’ + classic hits. The members of the band have been known, musically, for composing mid-tempo songs consisting of guitar lines overlaid with prominent keyboard work and contrasting dual female/ male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic detached sound. Much of the band’s recent material, however, sees a more down-tuned style, featuring a more distinct bass line and a higher mixing of the guitars within the songs. Upon its release LACUNA COIL’s album “Shallow Life” - recorded with acclaimed producer Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Pearl Jam) at the famed NRG Studios in Los Angeles - has marked the band’s highest Billboard chart entry, as well as the highest Billboard debut in the history of Century Media Records in the USA by hitting the US Billboard Top 200 charts at 16. It is the first full-length studio album since the 2006 release “Karmacode” and undeniably a huge step forward in the band’s musical evolution. Cristina Scabbia (vocals) states: “’Shallow Life’ is a natural metamorphosis from within the band; we explored different musical territories while maintaining our own style. A mix of old and new, fast and slow and light and dark. The album production is incredibly powerful and has a beautiful purity to it. Hopefully listeners will feel the same sort of connection that we have to these songs. ‘Shallow Life’ has forced us to challenge ourselves. It represents the way we see ourselves in the days we live in through truth, love and lies.” The American breakthrough for LACUNA COIL – whose moniker translates to “empty spiral“ in English – began with 2001‘s “Unleashed Memories” album. However, it was the runaway success of 2002‘s “Comalies” that became the foundation on which the band’s success was built. In early 2004, LACUNA COIL’s international successes were validated with an invitation to participate in that year’s Ozzfest, supporting such hard rock stalwarts as Disturbed, System of a Down and Ozzy himself. LACUNA COIL offered something unique to the package that ultimately struck a chord with fans, resulting in them being hailed as the year’s breakthrough artist. It offers the chance for one talented remixer to win a one in a lifetime chance for their remix of Pendulum’s new single ‘The Island’ to be released by Warner Bros. Records. Set to be launched at www.junodownload. com on Monday 20th September, the winning remix – which will be selected by Pendulum’s Rob Swire and Warner Bros. Records’ A&R team – will be released with full promotional and marketing support by the label. In addition to earning a royalty, the winner will also collect £500 cash, £150 worth of Juno download vouchers and a £150 Soundcloud Pro account. Upon completion, the finished remix will need to be uploaded as a 320kbps MP3 to Juno or Soundcloud by October 18th. The winning track will be announced that same day, with the single’s release to follow by the close of the year. The eight-date arena tour includes a London date at Wembley Arena. Juno Download is the MP3 and WAV download site from Juno Records, the world’s largest dance store. Rappers have been known to have ridiculous names, Eminem was a tad daft, but maybe that was just a British perspective ‘cos of the sweets? Puff Daddy……..ridiculous, but then changed to the much cooler P Diddy……..Not! But I must admit, this artist has to win my prize for the stupidest name in rap. He may as well have called himself Angry Toddler or Bit Miffed. I find it very difficult to take someone seriously with such a daft name, but I’m forever the professional, so I will try my best and rise above it. Nope sorry………..I can’t do it. This has a very whiney rap, it sounds like he does have a tiny voice to go with his tiny temper. This does the rap scene no justice at all; it just stereotypes the whole scene. You’ll see this at T in the Park on E4 no doubt along with all the other embarrassing miming d-list boy/girl bands and rappers. Artists such as the previously mentioned Eminem, who is constantly trying to push this genre into the modern age, must be growling with anger at releases such as this. Tinie’s last single got to Number 1, I will cry myself to sleep every night if that pattern continues, what is this world coming to?
quickly followed it up with ‘Crazy’. A brilliant single and the debut album was stunning. There are two versions out there done by different producers, they’re both great, but its really interesting to hear how they changed some parts of it as the album started selling more and more worldwide. Not totally sure why they did this, but that’s what record companies are like. ‘Kiss from a Rose’ was a massive single a few years later and was the first song played at Gary Numan’s wedding (a rare fact for you there). Now he’s back with, well as the title suggests, his 6th album. The first single from this is ‘Secret’ it’s a pretty enough ballad, but wouldn’t have been my choice for a single, it’s a bit bland. The whole album though does see a growing up of Seal as an artist. Vocally it’s stunning, he’s never sounded better. But Seal as an artist has mellowed a bit too much for me. There’s no leather clad contemporary Seal here. It’s a more laid back lounge Seal and for me that’s a bit disappointing. There times on this album where he almost belts stuff out and the sounds are almost gonna get some balls, but then it kinda wimps out on you. It lacks edge and that’s a shame.
Blimey!! Record companies don’t mess about nowadays do they! Talk about spotting an opportunity and pouncing on it! Reports all over the press daily about how George isn’t coping in prison (if you didn’t already know, he’s been sent down for 8 weeks for crashing his car into a shop, damaging it slightly, while under the influence of marijuana). Is being put into Pentonville as a short sharp shock really the right thing to do to a human being, or would drug counselling be more beneficial? I know what I think. So this re-release gets pushed out. It’s a good album of course it is ‘Faith’ ‘Father Figure’ ‘I Want Your Sex’ etc saw this album sell in its millions. Worth checking out, but the follow up ‘Listen Without Prejudice’ is the real gem in George Michael’s career.

Tips 2 Chill Out
PSYCHICS
1) Try to practice regularly, like once or twice a day. 2) It’s great to stretch before you start meditating. 3) Start by focusing on your breathing. Taking deep breaths helps to relax your muscles and focus your mind. 4) If you notice yourself getting frustrated with all the quietness and random thoughts, take your focus back to your deep breathing. 5) I used to think meditating was like sitting cross legged under a tree somewhere, but you can also meditate while walking or even sitting on a train. It’s all about stopping the thinking. You can also meditate by lying down. 6) Pick a room where you like to meditate. It’s best not to do it where you do any work, exercise or sleep (it’s a different energy, so best not to mix them). 7) When you’re starting out, check out some cool guided meditations—you can download some cool ones from iTunes. 8) Make sure you’re not disturbed. Lock the door, turn on the music and bliss out! 9) It’s also stacks of fun to meditate with a friend. Plus it helps to keep each other motivated to do it. 10) Morning is the best time to meditate. It’s when your mind is clearer, so there’s less mental stuff going on to deal with. Have fun with it guys and drop us a line to let us know how it’s working for you! Love, Jo x

If you’ve an impulsive streak, someone may hold you to something you say, so it may be best to think before you speak. Catch up on all outstanding correspondence. Piles of paperwork will cause nothing but misery, so getting organized can give you a sense of being on top. Call for more…
A contractual matter or difference of opinion can be resolved, but it probably won’t be without some tough talking. If you feel that someone has been unfair, there is a chance that they will see the light, but equally there can be more information which needs to surface. Call for more news…
Some kind of financial restructuring can give you peace of mind. Paying off debts can also give you a psychological lift. It’s not just that your outgoings will be reduced, the feeling that you are free of the pressure this can create can be liberating. Call for your financial scope in full…
If one association is a bit wobbly, this may be a time when it can be transformed into something better, or perhaps it’s best for all concerned if you decide to go your own ways. If finances have tightened up, a new beginning can give you cause for hope. Call for your financial scope in full…

So, I’m the first to admit I have trouble being quiet. As for meditation, I really dig being able to do it, but that only happens when I’m able to stop thinking so much (okay, that’s not that often!). I’ve decided I’m going to make my way to be like some master meditator this year, or have fun trying. I checked out a local meditation class yesterday, which was loads of fun. So, basically, meditation is the art of focusing your attention in one area. Most people choose to concentrate on their breath (my friend Jayla uses a candle) and let their thoughts about whatever drift in and out. It’s supposed to be great for improving things like concentration and making you feel happy. Sounds good, right? So anyway, I thought you guys would enjoy some of these 10 tips…

WELCOME TO THE HOUSE OF FUN LOCALS What a night! The 2 Tone Explosion at Crookes was a night of fun, dancing, fantastic live music, retro-fashion and I have to say some impressive drinking. The venue was packed and DJ ‘Fat Piggy’ was revving the members of 7Hills Scooter Club up from the off encouraging them to party from the moment the music started. The party was well under way before the first band, Eaton Rifles, took the stage with their selection of SKA, Punk and JAM hits showing a level musicianship and raw energy that had the dancefloor packed for the first chord to the last, Despite the level of enthusiasm demonstrated by the audience, and general partying, there wasn’t a spot of bother with everyone seemingly determined to have a great time. ‘Fat Piggy’ kept the party rolling as we waited for Mercury Clubland award Winners, Complete Madness, to take the stage. There’s no doubting that these are a convincing tribute to Madness and from a professional standpoint
I was deeply impressed with the sound, presentation and faithful replication of all of their hits by some very fine musicians. Anyone wishing to see how it should be done would do far worse than go along and see this band, From first to last Complete Madness kept the party atmosphere going and this was quickly turning into a great night to remember. We understand, from Crookes, that the bar takings were ‘’substantial’’. The bar closed at a rather early 11:30pm and I took that as my cue to leave, highly satisfied and totally entertained. Next up at Crookes are The Mercury Clubland Awards closely followed by Paul Pashley and his band. It looks like 2 more great nights are assured and I would recommend everyone to make sure they get their tickets.

CLAUDE POWELL SEP 24th 1932 - SEP 19th 2011
The Mercury is deeply saddened to report the passing of Claude Powell. We would like to express our gratitude to Alan Jay for sending us the following information. Claude was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on 24th September 1932 and came to the UK in 1952. Much loved by clubland and highly respected, being always a gentleman, both to other artistes and his many friends both here and all over the world on his many travels taking in Europe, South Africa, USA and his legendary seasons in Jersey. Though being diagosed with cancer in 2007, Claude still managed to perfrom at selected venues until 2008. Unquestionably one of the greatest vocalists ever to grace this profession, winning every clubland award going. Our sincere condolences go to his family and many friends.

LOOK WHAT IʼVE FOUND! MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas
I got a shock the other day when I was rooting round in the glove box of my car. Everything got pushed to the back, and I heard something fall through a little gap at the rear of the compartment and on to the floor mat. Low and behold, a pair of old white plastic rimmed sunglasses I’d never seen before! Having only had the vehicle a few months, I can only assume that they belong to the previous owner. It got me thinking though, about things that end up getting forgotten about and, as in this case, might end up in someone else’s possession. For instance, have you ever moved into a new house and found something lurking there? I had a text from a listener who found the previous occupant’s love letters stuffed in the attic of a house they’d bought, and heard as well from Katrina in Doncaster about a rather unattractive vanity case she acquired. It got a little more interesting for her when she found a £5 note inside. A woman also called about some frilly knickers that turned up under the seat in a car that she’d bought. On investigation with the showroom she tracked down the previous lady owner. Shockingly though, she found out that her husband knew about them anyway, because he’d been seeing the seller on the side! Anyway, don’t forget that this week on Magic I’m giving you the chance to spend a whopping £1000 on brand new goods at Atkinson’s Department Store on the Moor in Sheffield, so hopefully no shock there. Just tune in to the Breakfast Show for the sound of me pre-loading up my loyalty card, call and name the song I’ve just played and you could be our big winner. I’ll catch you bright and early. Trevor

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Linsey Duggan of Norrie Waite & Slater answers questions on domestic abuse
What is domestic violence? Domestic violence is when one person inflicts aggressive or abusive behaviour on another person who they are married to, cohabiting with, a relative of or a parent of the same child with. The most common forms of domestic abuse include: • Violence & physical abuse • Sexual abuse • Intimidation • Threats (against you or your children) • Harassment • Emotional & verbal abuse (calling you names, humiliation, playing mind games) I am being abused by my partner. How can the law help me? A family lawyer can help you to seek protection from any of the above forms of abuse. You can take out an injunction against the perpetrator of the abuse. This can be done very quickly and in emergency situations, even the same day without notice to the other party. An injunction is the term used to describe the order that can be made by the courts to provide you with protection and stop someone from doing a particular act. For example, an injunction can be made which prevents someone from coming within a specified distance of you or your home. If an injunction is breached there can be serious legal consequences, such as arrest and imprisonment. There are two main types of Orders available that the Court can make. A non-molestation order prevents a person from carrying out unreasonable behaviour that they may have been inflicted upon you or your children. This can prohibit the abuser from telephoning you, texting you, or trying to contact you in any other way either directly or indirectly. An occupation order instructs the abuser to leave your home and can prevent the abuser from coming within a specified distance of the property e.g. 100 metres. Your partner can be forcibly removed from your home by the police if they refuse to leave. I need a solicitor, but can’t afford to pay. Can I get legal aid? Legal aid is always available to help with obtaining injunctions for domestic abuse. If you need help, contact me in confidence on 0114 276 6166.
HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home Fees Does this sound familiar? “We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps you should take now to protect your home.
Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they down to their last £14,000. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made standard ‘Mirror
Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, yourself and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective shares of your home to the children in Trust but say they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse / partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.
“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the local authority get it all?”
Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future Care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a childs divorce, re-marrage or financial difficulties.

Poisonous plants warning from PDSA
With Autumn now officially here (21 September is the first day of Autumn) many seasonal plants are in full bloom. But leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is warning pet owners of the dangers lurking in our gardens and country walks. Allowing our four-legged friends to nibble the wrong type of autumn leaves, seeds and fruits may cause them serious harm. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “Most pets, especially young animals, are eager to explore new things, but sometimes they accidentally swallow objects when they only meant to investigate them. Eating parts of certain plants can cause sickness, but owners need to be aware that consuming large amounts can prove fatal.” Owners should keep an eye on what their pets are investigating while out on walks and remember that dangers can be present in their garden as well. “Always check before putting new or unusual plants in your garden to ensure they are not toxic to pets” continues Sean. “If you are unsure, staff at garden centres should be able to advise.” There are many poisonous plants, but at this time of year pet owners should be particularly aware of the following seasonal dangers:

by Clint Walker
Regular readers may remember he ‘hidden gem’ I mentioned a couple of weeks ago? The kind of water we all wish we could find, stuffed full of big fish and only a few (if any) people know about? In reality, they don’t exist though do they? WRONG! If you look hard enough, talk to the right people and get lucky, you may drop on something just like I did last month. I just happened to follow up a report in the local press which mentioned a posh hotel was having a huge amount of investment put into it and that they were thinking of opening a fishery. I didn’t think there was any harm in following it up to see what was going on, so I visited the hotel to find out more. Asking the right chap was the first stroke of luck, Mike put me in touch with the new lease holder who was on site and available to speak to. Good start. I went over to the lakes and spent a few hours with Craig McKenzie (leaseholder) who told me all about his plans for a combined carp and coarse venue, hopefully used by a small group of anglers to help police the water and prevent any problems. I was offered an invite to fish to help ascertain the stocking level, and, since then, I’ve had two short sessions on the water. I’ve managed to sneak a couple of fish, one a mid-double, the second a stunning, fin and scale perfect 20lb 4oz common carp! Lovely! As yet, the fish are not used to seeing ‘bait’;

boilies and pellets are unknown to these carp which haven’t been fished for in more than 10 years, so ‘naturals’ such as worm and corn, maggots and bread have seen the majority of captures. When more bait goes in and they get used to it as a food source, then I’m sure the better quality boilie type baits will start to score. This weekend has just seen the first paying anglers try out the fishery (all Northern Monkeys) and all are very happy to have the chance to fish such an unspoiled venue. (It evens backs onto a golf course if you can’t catch fish!) The point I’m trying to make here is that there may be fish on your doorstep that you know nothing about (this new place is less than 15 minutes from my front door) and that many anglers become ‘blinkered’ into fishing those places with the best advertising and promotions departments. As you know, I also write the NW report in weekly UK wide magazine ‘Carp-Talk’ and regularly feature fisheries who want to advertise to gain more day ticket or syndicate income. What about the other though, the places which are ‘unknown’? The places right on ‘Carp-Talk’ and regularly feature fisheries who want to advertise to gain more day ticket or syndicate income. What about the other though, the places which are ‘unknown’? The places close by, overgrown and unloved, full of rumour and myth? Find one and you could catch the fish of a lifetime!! ASCOT ON THE HORIZON HORSE RACING by Timelord This coming weekend Ascot hosts its big September meeting where there are several top class Group races that usually attract good fields. In Ireland also there are a couple of Group races over the weekend. I am starting however with the Fillies and Mares Listed race at 3.45 on Friday where there are several talented animals in opposition. Michael Jarvis’s Ferdoos is lifetime 2/2 and David Lanigan’s Sparkling Smile has very impressive form figures this year (5/5). Even though Lanigan has Sparkling Smile declared here I think that the clue to solving this race is Eastern Aria’s Group 2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster where several of these met. His Meeznah finished third in the Park Hill, three lengths or more in front of the others engaged here, and would be my choice for this if she lines up. If Meeznah does not take her chance then my selection is Polly’s Mark who was fourth in the Park Hill. Sparkling Smile will be dangerous but the Park Hill looked a good race and was run in a very fast time. Copperbeech, Warling and Brushing may prove best of the rest. Saturday’s Ascot card kicks off with a very competitive looking Listed Handicap at 1.55. I think that the race can be won by Stuart Williams’ Victoria Sponge but Carioca, Thrill, Simla Sunset and Night Lily will ensure that it is no cakewalk. Next up at 2.30 is the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes. Henry Cecil’s unbeaten Frankel is the hot favourite (currently something like 1/2) and has an excellent chance but I fancy Aidan O’Brien’s Factum at a decent each way price (currently about 12/1). O’Brien’s Samuel Morse also holds good claims from his performance behind Pathfork in the National Stakes recently. In the Group 1 Fillies Mile at 3.05White Moonstone looks to hold a favourite’s chance. Unbeaten so far in her career she has improved with each race and last time out took the Group 2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster by 5 lengths. Her main
opposition looks to be Theyskens’ Theory and I think it will be close between them. White Moonstone is the selection but do not be surprised if she struggles to prevail against Theyskens’ Theory. Best of the rest are Misty For Me, Together and Date With Destiny. The 3.40 is another ultracompetitive handicap. For all the reasons explained last week I shall not be playing in this one but, just to ensure that the fence post does not become permanently and uncomfortably wedged, my token selection is Kyllachy Star, who has been running well of late but needs a couple to come out before he is a certain runner. If Kyllachy Star is absent the back-up selection is Axiom. In the Group 1 QEII Stakes at 4.15 Canford Cliffs is the favourite but he has pretty strong opposition in Makfi, Rip Van Winkle, Steinbeck and Rio de la Plata. However I think that the much underestimated Cape Blanco is fast enough to cope with the drop back to a mile and is the value bet to see them all off from the front. My each way suggestion is Poet’s Voice who ran really well last time at Goodwood, when seeing off Main Aim by 4.5 lengths in the Group 2 Celebration Mile, and looks to be improving. Over at Gowran Park the Group 3 4.05 race can go to Kevin Prendergast’s Choose Me although it should be close between her and Indiana Gal. At 4.10 on Sunday the Cumberland Lodge Stakes can be landed by the admirable Laaheb, although Godolphin’s pair Pompeyano and Whispering Gallery should provide a pretty stern test and Sir Michael Stoute’s Patkai isn’t out of it. Later on at 4.45 the Group 2 Diadem Stakes can go to Henry Candy’s Markab to supplement his recent win in the Haydock Group 1Betfred Sprint Cup. In my opinion the biggest threat (if he runs) is likely to come from David Marnane’s Santo Padre, who would probably be a backable each way price. On Sunday at The Curragh (4.25) the Group 2 Beresford Stakes has attracted a strong field. Best of them would appear to be Pathfork although Dunboyne Express is no
mug and neither is Saamidd. Add to these the likes of Longhunter, Mawaakef, Emperor Hadrian and Factum (who is also declared for this) and you have the makings of a very good race indeed. On the basis that Pathfork will not run I think that the race could boil down to a straight scrap between Dunboyne Express and Mawaakef, with a reluctant (because I also like the “Express” a lot) selection of Mawaakef. Summary: Ascot 3.45 Friday: Meeznah, if absent Polly’s Mark; Ascot Saturday: 1.55: Victoria Sponge; 2.30: Factum; 3.05: White Moonstone; 3.40: Kyllachy Star, if absent Axiom; 4.15: Cape Blanco (nap), e/w Poet’s Voice; Gowran Park Saturday: 4.05: Choose Me, if absent Indiana Gal; Ascot Sunday: 4.10: Laaheb; 4.45: Markab; The Curragh Sunday: 4.25 Mawaakef. Last week’s results: Phew! At last some respite from poor results for the column as the “nap”, Majestic Dubawi obliged at the very decent price of 22/1 – it’s been a long time coming, or so it seems. The column also got a winner in the 2.30 at Newbury on Saturday courtesy of Strong Suit and Al Aasifh being non runners, when Temple Meads ran out a ready 4/1 winner in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes. He should now be followed wherever he goes as he looked much better when held up (as yesterday) rather than making the running (as previously at York). Other column suggestions that ran well at decent prices without winning were: Sir Gerry (second at 33/1); Enabling (third at 28/1); Masaya (third at 20/1); Elliptical (second at 18/1); and Demolition (fourth at 20/1). Rude Girl also ran well on Sunday at Fairyhouse but was just run out of the places, finishing fourth at 20/1. Khor Sheed, who also got a mention here, won the 3.35 at Newmarket on Friday at a price of 7/2. I was also quite pleased that I did not get involved in the Ayr Gold Cup and Silver Cup as (yet again) I could not have found the winners. These races are simply too difficult.
MILLERS RUN RIOT AT BARNET FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United became League Two’s top scorers after a stunning second half where they rattled in four goals to defeat Barnet 4-1 at Underhill. Goals from Kevin Ellison, Tom Pope, Danny Harrison and Adam Le Fondre ensured the three points came back to South Yorkshire, after Barnet had troubled the Millers at regular intervals during the game. Ronnie Moore elected to name an unchanged side for the third game in a row, despite the return of Pope to full match fitness The Millers almost made a dream start with Le Fondre racing on to Jason Taylor’s pass and he forced goalkeeper Jake Cole into a smart stop. With Taylor prominent early on, Ronnie Moore’s side were in full control of the early proceedings. In the 18th minute a neat one-two between Nicky Law and Tom Newey saw Law have an effort deflected just wide for a corner. Johnny Mullins then headed over when well placed to score from the resulting Ellison corner. Moments later, a Mullins centre found captain Ryan Cresswell in the area but he could only direct the ball straight into the arms of Cole. Gradually the hosts gained a foothold into the game. A quick throw-in from Ricky Holmes released Jordan Parkes, whose speculative long range drive drifted wide of the far post. On the half hour mark Mark Marshall graced past Mullins and his low centre flashed across the goal, just evading Ricky Holmes at the back post. The Millers had a major let off

two minutes later as Holmes blazed his shot wide after a neat cut back from Joe Devera when it looked easier to score. Parkes showed his attacking prowess from full back by cutting in and unleashing a ferocious drive on 36 minutes but his effort from long range again went narrowly wide. Barnet started the second half with vigour and had the first opportunity on 47 minutes. Marshall latched onto Steve Kabba’s flick but the nippy winger prodded his shot wide. Two minutes later the Millers given another scare. Glen Southam drilled in a fierce long range shot which Warrington superbly tipped away. However the rebound dropped invitingly to sub Clovis Kandjo who stabbed the ball against the bar from six yards out. That spurred the Millers into life and midway through the second period they took the lead. A corner from Law found Cresswell whose header ricocheted off the bar and the rebound was bundled in by Ellison. Three minutes later it was 2-0. Mark Bradley’s clever through ball released Law down the right and he then squared it to Pope who was lurking three yards out for a simple tap-in. With the home side reeling the Millers surged forward again. With 14 minutes remaining Law picked out Harrison and the Liverpudlian rifled his shot past an unsighted Cole. But the Bees reduced their arrears on 81 minutes when Mark Byrne coolly slotted home after collecting substitute Glenn Poole’s pass. It was soon 4-1, though, as Le Fondre bagged his eighth goal in nine matches after Cole could only parry Ellison’s 25-yard drive. Le Fondre nearly grabbed a second in injury time but his weak shot from an acute angle was comfortably blocked by Cole.
Another Winning Weekend for Steelers
ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle The Sheffield Steelers found success this weekend in a home and away double-header against the Newcastle Vipers. On Saturday the Steelers played host for the Vipers’ first game of the 2010-11 season, following a late start. Though the Vipers had been victorious in a friendly against the Whitley Warriors, the difference in opponent showed as the Steelers took the lead in the third minute with a goal from Jeff Legue after two penalties in the first 71 seconds left the Vipers fighting off a 5-on-3 penalty kill. By the end of the first period the Steelers were 2-0 up after Steve Munn doubled their lead with his first goal of the season. In the second period there was no let-up as Jason Hewitt scored at 26:13. Jeff Legue chipped in with his second of the night at 13:25, closely followed by ex-NHLer Rob Globke at 17:06. Legue closed the period’s scoring with his hat-trick goal at 39:05. Player-coach Ben Simon scored at 10:26 and, with the crowd starting to call out for double figures, D-man Mark Thomas was awarded a penalty shot and scored. The team didn’t hit the double figures, but could be proud of their 8-0 win. Sunday saw the Steelers head to Whitley Bay to take on the Vipers once again, who this time put up more of a fight, eventually losing 5-3. Sheffield once again took a 2-0 lead in the first period, with goals from Ashley Tait and team Captain Jonathan Phillips, and they doubled that lead in the second period. The Vipers were down but not out, however, as they scored their first goal of the night at 34:41 (Hartmanis). Rob Globke scored the Steelers’ final goal at 36:10, and the Vipers gave Steelers fans a few nervous moments as they added two goals in the third period (Sibley, Rzeszutko), but they couldn’t find the push to level the scores, and the Steelers took the points. The Steelers’ next home game is on Wednesday September 22nd, a Challenge Cup game at Ice Sheffield vs the Cardiff Devils. The next Arena home game is Saturday September 25th, vs the Edinburgh Capitals. Tickets are available from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield box office. EVANS STRIKE ENOUGH TO BEAT POMPEY
MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk Ched Evans drilled in an impressive 25-yard free-kick to help the Blades beat Portsmouth on Saturday. The Welsh striker - short of luck at the start of this season - was rewarded for his hard work when his set-piece shot found the target, via a post. Steve Simonsen made a number of fine saves as the Blades made it 22 home matches without defeat against Pompey. Morgan returned to the starting line-up, taking over from Nosworthy, who dropped to the bench. The skipper and Nosworthy changing places was the only change. For the visitors, Mokoena was recalled after injury and former Blade Brown also started. United were forced to kick towards the Kop in the first period and were soon on the back foot. Just a minute had gone when Nugent and Utaka combined, forcing Bartley to poke out his long legs to stop Kitson gaining a clear sight of goal. A stray Jordan pass then resulted in Simonsen having to turn away a Utaka shot after the striker cut inside Calve. From the resulting corner, Utaka and Rocha got in each other’s way from a Lawrence cross. Calve, Jordan and Ward all whipped in deliveries in an even opening 20 minutes but the home side could not produce anything worthy of goalkeeper Ashdown’s attention. At the other end, on 23 minutes, Utaka got the better of Bartley down the left but his cross was too powerful for Nugent to direct. The Blades suffered a blow when Morgan hobbled off, replaced by Nosworthy, and then the attention turned to referee Hegley, following a string of strange decisions, benefiting both teams. Brown and Ertl were booked but Nugent survived a yellow card despite two instances of slowing down free-kicks. Nugent came close to opening the scoring on 36 minutes but his header, from Ward’s cross, struck a team-mate, Kitson, before United scrambled clear. United’s best chance of the half arrived on 42 minutes and was the result of good work from Evans, who took the attentions of three Pompey defenders before pulling back for the advancing Ertl, who could not hit the target from the edge of the box. The one added minute at the end of the half saw the visitors win two free-kicks but the rearguard and Simonsen stood firm and were deservedly level at the interval. Pompey also made a bright start to the second half. Utaka got the better of Calve but his shot hit Montgomery and then, from a Lawrence cross, Nugent’s header was kept out at the near post by Simonsen. Speed introduced Quinn at the expense of Montgomery and then referee Hegley again brought out his yellow card, brandishing it to Pompey’s Dickinson and United’s Ward. Twice in the space of four minutes ex Stoke team-mates Lawrence and Simonsen were pitted against each other with the goalkeeper coming out on top on both occasions. He, firstly, dropped to his left to make a smart save with Lawrence in a central position and then the Republic of Ireland

midfielder’s free-kick was turned around the post. Brown’s shot hit Nosworthy and Nugent sliced well wide as Pompey continued to create the better of the chances. However, they were punished for not converting on 77 minutes. Evans, with Quinn and Ertl racing forward in support, ran at the Pompey defence and saw his pass to the right cut out by Dickinson’s arm, prompting referee Hegley to award a free-kick, 25 yards out. EVANS took responsibility for the set piece and after a little lay-off, he drilled a low effort that beat Ashdown’s right hand, creeping in, via a post. Pompey hit straight back but Kitson was off target after Lawrence’s pass and Speed used his final change, introducing Yeates for goalscorer Evans. The visitors brought on Kanu as another attacking option. Within the space of a minute Yeates and Quinn both found themselves free on the left but neither could tee-up Cresswell for a second goal. Four added minutes were indicated by the fourth official but the home defence withstood the predicted onslaught, the only chance of note being Kanu’s long-range effort, which was comfortable for Simonsen, and United duly picked up another three points. Blades: Simonsen, Jordan, Montgomery (Quinn 53), Morgan (Nosworthy 24), Ertl, Britton, Evans (Yeates 81), Calve, Cresswell, Ward, Bartley. Unujsed: Bogdanovic, Aksalu, Taylor, Lowton. Portsmouth: Ashdown, Dickinson, Mokoena, Lawrence, Mullins, Nugent (Kanu 81), Brown, Utaka, Kitson, Ward (Ciftci 90), Rocha. Unused: Ritchie, Hughes, Sonko, Flahavan.
CHED OFF AND RUNNING
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sufc.co.uk Ched Evans says hard work and persistence were the two main elements behind the Blades’ success over Portsmouth on Saturday. Evans scored his first goal at Bramall Lane this term with a late second-half free-kick and admitted United were slightly fortunate to beat rock bottom Pompey: “It has finally come. I seem to have a thing about hitting the post but thankfully this time the ball went in. “We have been practising setpieces a lot in training and you often see the ball deflecting off the wall, so the intention was to strike it well and make sure it was on target. “We have been creating chances all season, we battered Scunthorpe and lost 4-0, but we weren’t great against Portsmouth and won, so hopefully our luck has changed.” Following their third success in four matches, Evans is tipping the Blades to climb the table under Gary Speed and says contributing to that comes before any personal accolade: “The lads are full of confidence, as a team we know our jobs and everyone is looking forward to a good season. We need to get on a good run and I am sure that will see us getting towards the top six. “I am a striker and love scoring but it is more important that the team is winning.”
SELF BELIEF BLADES JUSTIFIED WIN REUNION GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk
Although by the manager’s own admission the Blades weren’t at their best in beating Portsmouth, he insists that they have the potential to improve on the generally impressive work they have shown under his leadership so far. Gary Speed’s post-match demeanour has remained considered and calculated whatever the result so far, but he made a point on Saturday of highlighting that his players are better than they might think: “If I have a criticism of the boys it is that sometimes they don’t really know how good they are, which convinces me that we can improve. “I was delighted with the way they went about the job because you can’t play well every game and when you don’t you have work even harder to get the result. “We had to show different qualities after playing well but losing in midweek. They learnt a lot from that, so did I, and the lads improved their shape and discipline.” Ched Evans’ free-kick separated the two teams on Saturday and although the Welsh International has suffered a lot of ill-luck with his finishing recently, the manager acknowledges that the young striker has the capacity for thunderous finishing: “He has that in his locker because he has a rocket in that foot, but I don’t actually feel that he caught it as cleanly as he can - against Scunthorpe he did but hit the post! “It was fortunate that I was about to take him off at about that point but when we got the free-kick I decided to delay the substitution. “He has two goal goals so far, could have got more but we need goals from everywhere in the team, not just from him. “Ched want to work for the team and often ends up outside the box, so it is a question of helping him find the right balance in his game. But he is still young and there is more to come from everyone - my job is to bring that out.” Speed also revealed that he had given serious consideration to recalling Stephen Quinn who eventually replaced Nick Montgomery just after half-time: “I was deliberating about starting with him and, naturally, when I didn’t he was not too happy about it, but I made an early change after half-time to give us more balance on the left and he gave us that.”

GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk Steve Simonsen was glad to get one over several former teammates at the weekend, in a game where the result was more important than the performance. Simonsen admitted afterwards that Pompey deserved something from the game, but was delighted to win by a single goal for the third time this season: “We are very pleased with the result especially after Tuesday night. It was arguably our best performance and we lost 4-0 at home which was ridiculous. “Whereas we have really ground out a result against Portsmouth - they have had a lot of the ball and created chances but I was fortunate enough to have made the saves. We then have one chance and score the winner from Ched’s free-kick. “Those type of games are the ones you need to win in this league, when you haven’t been brilliant but still walk away with the points. “It was run of the mill stuff and the third 1-0 in four games, so it is pleasing that we are winning matches on the back of clean sheets.” The stopper, who was named man of the match, was also a happy man after he and Richard Cresswell won what he dubbed as ‘the Stoke reunion’, as the Blades focus now switches quickly to the forthcoming derby clash at Elland Road: “With Lawrence, Kitson and Dickinson all playing and Sonko on the bench it was like a Stoke reunion for me and Cressy, so it was great to get one over our former team-mates. “We now move on to a Yorkshire derby and the lads can’t wait. We have both had a mixed start, but we are going there looking for another three points and hopefully a clean sheet.”
ACADEMY HOLD UNITED GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk Joe Ironside was on target as the Blades fought back from a goal down to earn a creditable draw against Manchester United in the FA Premier Academy League on Saturday. Ironside’s strike ten minutes into the second-half cancelled out Larnell Cole’s stunning free-kick for the visitors. Moments from the final whistle Jordan Slew came within a whisker of snatching all three points, but his effort hit the post. In a goalless first period it was the visitors who had the two best chances. Cofie beat Long only to see his powerful shot come back off the post, before Long and Maguire combined to deny Tunnicliffe after he surged into the box. Two minutes into the second-half, the Red Devils took the lead. COLE riffled home a 25-yard free-kick into the top right-hand corner giving Long no chance. The lead only lasted eight min-
ITʼS A FUNNY OLD GAME FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton
This last week has seen Sheffield United go from the sublime to the ridiculous, or the ridiculous to the sublime, depending whether results or performances mean the most to you. In an astonishing game against Scunthorpe United last Tuesday, the Blades at times showed the flair and finesse that many hope will characterise Gary Speed’s interpretation of the Blades Way. Unfortunately this resulted in an almost unbelievable 4-0 loss, a score-line that Sheffield United has not been subjected to in a home fixture since the pre-Warnock era. Fast forward four days to the Portsmouth game and the Blades put in possibly their worst performance under the new boss, having to rely on the heroics of man of the match Steve Simonsen to keep them in it and creating very little by way of chances. But as disappointing as the result had been against Scunthorpe, the 1-0 victory over bottom of the league Portsmouth showed that it doesn’t always hurt to win ugly. All of this will give Gary Speed plenty of food for thought as he beds down in his first role in football management. A wonderful midfield player in his time, there is no doubt that the former Welsh international legend will endeavour to have the Blades playing an attractive passing game. But at the same time he will be well aware that results are ultimately the parameter upon which his success will be measured, and his team must show grit and determination as well as passing fluidity. There are early signs that he just may achieve that and a tough game away at Speed’s former club Leeds United will definitely be a good test of the Blades’ credentials. But when considering the argument of results vs. performance, I think it’s fair to say the majority of the traveling support would take a 1-0 win at Elland Road, however it comes. utes though. Coll had previously denied IRONSIDE by excellently tipping over his goal bound shot, but in the Blades next attack, Coll could only parry the ball and the striker calmly tucked away the rebound despite the attentions of two Reds defenders. Both sides continued to go for all three points and Slew was desperately unfortunate to see his toe-poke rebound off the post before Thorpe cleared. At the other end Long produced an excellent save to deny Cofie from Cole’s right-wing cross. As the game entered the latter stages the hosts continued to press forward and after Maguire came close, Slew burst in from the left but his cross-cum-shot went inches wide. In the end the Blades had to settle for a point when they probably had done enough to take the spoils. Academy Director John Pemberton heaped praise on his youngsters following another excellent performance: “It was arguably the best all-round performance of the season and we are building game-by-game on certain elements of play. “We were strong defensively for the large part and created several chances against a team that has cost millions to assemble.”

THREE DEFEATS ON THE BOUNCE
MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday suffered their third defeat in a row as ten-man Plymouth posted a maiden home win of the new campaign in a topsy-turvy Home Park clash. Argyle captain Carl Fletcher opened the scoring before James O’Connor equalised for the visitors but Bradley Wright-Phillips restored the advantage after Bondz N’Gala saw red in controversial circumstances. Substitute Tommy Miller looked to have salvaged a point for the Owls with a stunning volley before Craig Noone hit the decisive goal of the game to seal victory. Both sides started brightly on a glorious afternoon in Devon and only four minutes were on the clock when Plymouth might have taken the lead. A whipped-in corner from the left fell nicely to Krisztian Timar but the central defender sliced his shot wide. Mellor’s diving header then whistled over the bar at the other end before Timar again caused problems for the Owls’ defence, heading past the post from another corner. The hosts continued to press and came closer still on ten minutes when Wright-Phillips - making his first league start of the season was sent scampering in on goal but the former Southampton forward saw his shot charged down by the alert Nicky Weaver. Wednesday’s in-form keeper was called into action moments later and again thwarted Wright-Phillips in a similar situation. Noone sent a daisycutter across Weaver but wide and the Pilgrims looked far more likely to open the scoring - which Fletcher did on 19 minutes. Wright-Phillips set the Plymouth skipper up nicely and Fletcher buried a firm low drive into the bottom corner off the post from 25 yards. The first half developed more and

more to Plymouth’s favour but just as it seemed a second strike was inevitable, the Owls hit back with a goal out of the blue eight minutes before the interval. Tommy Spurr got to the byline on a rare break and delivered a perfect cross into the danger zone that O’Connor despatched with a neat header from ten yards. And fortune continued on the Owls’ side as controversy erupted in the final minute of the first half. Mellor got the better of N’Gala 35 yards from goal and the defender appeared to foul the on-loan Preston man. Referee Andy Penn waved play-on before being called over by his assistant, who clearly intimated a professional foul and N’Gala duly saw red. But with the second period 23 seconds old, the pendulum swung back the way of Plymouth. Noone fed an accurate cross onto the head of Wright-Phillips, who made no mistake from close range. The same player then sent a curling effort narrowly wide before the Owls began to make their numerical advantage count, albeit without troubling keeper Romain Larrieu. Play switched more to the Plymouth half and Alan Irvine sent on Miller and Clinton Morrison in a bid to further turn the screw. Marcus Tudgay advanced on goal and pulled the trigger on a bullet shot that brushed the side-netting before Wednesday grabbed a deserved equaliser on 75 minutes. Miller controlled a looping ball and hit a wonderful strike on the volley that gave the despairing Larrieu no chance of averting. But the Owls promptly saw all their hard work undone just two minutes later when Jim Paterson picked out Noone at the back post with a teasing cross and the latter headed home to send all three points his side’s way.
MODEST AND OLIVER ON TARGET
LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday under-18s picked up a 2-1 win against Wolves on Saturday at Middlewood Road, this the final of five difficult games outside of the region. Owls ‘ dangermen Nathan Modest and Vadaine Oliver both struck for Wednesday to overturn an early setback from the visitors. Wednesday went a goal behind but equalised in the first half through Modest who rounded off an excellent move from the home side with a neat finish and Oliver grabbed the winner 15 minutes from time with a brave header from close range. Academy manager Sean McAuley said: “It was a good game and a really hard working game for us. “Nathan Modest and Vadaine Oliver are the two players closest to senior football and when they do play they are a huge threat and the major difference. Both goals were taken superbly. “But that said, I thought the performance of all the lads was outstanding because it was real hard-fought game and Wolves deserve a lot of credit because they were a really good side who can compete to very high standards.”
Plymouth: Larrieu, N’Gala, Fletcher, Johnson, Patterson (Seip 46), Wright-Phillips, Arnason, Bhasera, Noone (Stephens 89), Timar, Paterson Owls: Weaver, Buxton, Purse, Beevers, Spurr (Jones 80), Sedgwick (Morrison 62), O’Connor, Potter (Miller 62), Coke, Mellor, Tudgay Unused substitutes: Jameson, Otsemobor, Teale, Heffernan
OʼDONNELL COOKS UP A STORM AT CENTRE LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell turned chef for a day and cooked up a storm in a bid to engage local youngsters in education. The Owls star who is currently on loan at Grimsby Town returned to Hillsborough to film a cookery master class that will be screened in the club’s Study Support Centre. The Hillsborough-based centre is part of the national Playing for Success initiative and aims to boost children’s literacy and numeracy levels by using the surroundings of a professional sports club. Goalkeeper Richard was filmed making a pepperoni pizza and African dish couscous in clips which will be used to aid teaching this year. Pupils will watch the video and then be asked to write out a recipe for the meals as well as using the information given on weights and timings to solve a range of numeracy problems. Richard said: “I think the Study Support Centre is an excellent facility and gets kids excited about learning so if I can do anything to help encourage them further I am happy to be involved.” He added: “I hope the cookery video will make the children laugh as much as we did whilst making it, I had a lot of fun and the pizza turned out to be very nice.” Centre co-ordinator Mike Taylor added: “I would like to thank Richard O’Donnell for his continued commitment to the centre and his involvement in our latest video. Player participation is crucial to the scheme as the children are really motivated when they visit, or if we use their video recordings to aid teaching.”
FAMILIAR FEELING
FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by J.C. Snugsville Given the choice between a four hour drive to Plymouth or a 4 hour flight to a Turkish all inclusive resort Bunsen Bob chose to pack his suitcase and leave me holding his pen once more. And he’s actually given me a little bit of a hospital ball to deal with ‘cos there aint a great deal I can say on the Owls this week. I don’t criticise the team unless I’ve actually been to the game, and regrettably I didn’t make the trip to Home Park nor indeed enjoy one of the best nights out in the country afterwards as we have done many times before. So, the only thing I can say about Saturday is that no one has said to Bob that they’d bet he wishes he’d have gone to the match instead of on his jollies!! Takeover / non takeover? I pay as much attention to football board room goings on as I do to page 2 of The Sun… On Saturday as I do on blank weeks I parted with a fiver and was thoroughly entertained by some Northern Counties League football. Maximum effort from both sides. Not one tackle shirked. Not a single piece of ‘simulation’ (alright the language was blue both on and off the field but then again football is a working class sport some would say) and all this for an appearance fee of circa a tenner to the respective players. It’s very refreshing once in a while to see some grass roots football and it leaves me pondering what would happen if the twenty or so clubs on the financial brink who have competed in English football’s top two tiers within the last 20 years decided to change their tack. Lets say they pulled out of the football league and formed an entirely independent football league. Lets say they invited players to play for them for say £100 a match plus maybe 50% of the gate receipts split between the named 16 players on the day. Lets say they had a straight £5 admission fee on the turnstiles to all comers all season long. Maybe they could pool together and sell the TV rights for this single division league to somebody like Channel 5? Would these games be played in front of full houses with cracking atmospheres? What kind of fixtures would such a league throw up? Wednesday v Southampton, Leeds v Blades ? These fixtures are on offer for a price of £20 plus this weekend played in front of crowds which should be a lot bigger. Did the League / Union split kill off Rugby?
