THE MOOR GOES WILD An exhibition is now open and will be in the city for the next six months until next March thanks to a partnership between Sheffield City Council and the Natural History Museum. Popular Sheffield retail area The Moor’s Wild Planet photography Wild Planet is a free outdoor photography exhibition featuring 80 of the most spectacular images from Wildlife Photographer of the Year – the world’s most prestigious wildlife photography competition and the Natural History Museum’s longestrunning and most successful annual exhibition. Visitors can experience stunning photographs of wild animals, creatures and landscapes whilst finding out more about some of the
world’s most highly acclaimed wildlife photographers. Wild Planet merchandise and memorabilia will be available from the Wild Planet store, located at the heart of the exhibition. The Moor is one of Sheffield’s most historic retail centres. It is home to the city’s oldest independent department store, Atkinsons, as well as a host of household names like BHS, Debenhams, Peacocks and Sainsburys. It has benefitted from stunning new public realm works and is soon to be the new home for Sheffield Markets. The Moor enjoys high levels of footfall and a diverse and appreciative audience, boasting a yearround programme of free public events spanning a classic
car show to Fright Night’s Little Brother. The area is already known for its stunning art installations making it an ideal ‘catch all’ location for the exhibition, which is touring the country with the aim of reaching new audiences. Dr Michael Dixon, Director of the Museum said: “The Natural History Museum is delighted to be bringing this new free touring exhibition, Wild Planet, to Sheffield. Wild Planet celebrates stunning images from past years of the highly successful annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition which is an international leader in providing new insights into the natural world. Through Wild Planet the Museum aims to give new audiences
the opportunity to be inspired by these dramatic images of nature and to take individual responsibility to care for the future of our planet.” Councillor Roger Davison, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism said: “It is a great honour for Sheffield to host this remarkable exhibition and The Moor is the ideal location. It is walking distance from all of the city centre’s major hotels; it has great public transport links and a wonderful, diverse range of events that attract people to the area throughout the year. I hope that Sheffielders and visitors to the city enjoy the exhibition over the next six months.” Sheffield is the
second city to host the exhibition and the first venue in the north of England thanks to the partnership between the Natural History Museum and Sheffield City Council. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition is owned by the Natural History Museum, London and BBC Wildlife Magazine. Each year, the best of the entries are
showcased in a highly popular exhibition at the Natural History Museum in London before touring regionally and internationally.

CABARET NIGHTS
Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and all of the money required to run the service is raised by our volunteers. This week we held a collection on the Tanyard Shopping Centre at Wickersley in Rotherham and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who donated to help us raise £127.25. There are always fundraising activities going on around the station including our internet shopping centre at easyfundraising.org.uk. As much as we hate to admit it Christmas is on the way but our online shopping centre provides the ideal opportunity to avoid the queues and car parking nightmares and shop from the comfort of your own home. There’s loads of high street names and some more unusual retailers too where you can find the perfect present for everyone. Also for Christmas we fundraise through Webb Ivory, this is a catalogue packed full of Christmas cards and wrapping paper for all your Christmas treats. Plus there are gift ideas, personalised presents and loads more and as with the online shopping the price you pay remains the same but a donation to Radio Nightingale is made out of this amount. If you’d like to support Radio Nightingale this Christmas with your cards and wrapping paper purchases from Webb Ivory please contact us and we’ll send a catalogue for you to browse. Call the studio on 01709 304244 or email fundraising@ radionightingale.org.uk Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. COPLEYʼS COLUMN This has been a hard week for me, testing my powers of endurance to the limit. Going out four nights out of five was par for the course when I was a young man, but alas, although the mind is more than willing, the body can no longer cash cheques that are written out by my mind. The first leg of the marathon, on Wednesday was the birthday celebration of my friend Diana Edwards, Agnetha in top international Abba tribute band Bjorn Again, and what a fantastic night it turned out to be. Held upstairs at the White Swan, Dronfield, we were treated to an impromptu performance by Diana, and two other members of Bjorn Again, George (Bjorn ) and Fearn (Frida ). What a scoop his was for the White Swan, bearing in mind that Bjorn Again normally command a five figure fee. I did play a little joke on Diana, which regrettably cannot be reported in a family newspaper. Fellow guest, Sunny Daye, stayed at my home overnight, as the trip home to Nottinghamshire would not have been practical,
particularly as she was out the next night with Caron and me. Being fairly hung over on Thursday morning, Sunny and I went to breakfast as is my custom to the Chantry Hotel, with my great pals Jackie and Roy, before returning home to get ready for the Mercury Awards at Crookes Club. This was a fantastic evening, and I was proud to be there representing the Mercury. Famous faces at my table were Hi-de-Hi’s Paul Shane and funny man Lance Edwards. Every year after the Mercury Awards , there seems to be some controversy, and this year, via social network site Facebook, a posting was made by one of the nicest lads and most competent, more or less rubbishing one of the acts. Whilst I would rigorously defend his right to his opinion, I have to say that he is in the minority, and the two most experienced members of the audience, Paul Shane and Glen Dale both told me how much they had enjoyed the evening. Glenn Wood and Andrew Platts are to be congratulated for putting together this fantastic night of entertainment. I do

CHARLATANS HAPPY BIRTHDAY! TOUCH The Birthday Massacre is from Toronto, Canada. Combining their interests in various musical and artistic styles, the band has successfully accumulated an impressive international fan base, press accolades, and defied categorization with their unique sound and visuals. The group originated in London, Ontario under the name Imagica. The group’s original line-up consisted of: Chibi (vocals), Rainbow (guitar and programming), Michael Falcore (guitar), and J. Aslan (bass). Dank played live keyboards and O.E. joined the group on live drums. A seven-song limited edition demo was released. In 2001, Dank left the group, and the others relocated from London to Toronto, Ontario, to begin recording. There, they recorded another limited edition demo, this time with five songs. Shortly thereafter, the band adopted the name The Birthday Massacre. The Birthday Massacre released a nine song EP entitled “Violet,” and re-released “Nothing and Nowhere” with new sleeve artwork. In 2004, the band was signed to Repo Records in Germany, and released a remastered and expanded version of “Violet” in Europe, including updated album art in a digipak case, and in 2005 the band signed to Metropolis Records and released “Violet” in the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, and most of South America. Their unusual musical style combines gothic lyrics and melodic overtones with loud distortion guitars and ambient synthesizers. Their sound is often a mix of retro electronica and dynamic contemporary elements lyric’s of children’s fiction and adult fantasy are combined with twisting distortion and euphoric melody to create a unique and original sound dubbed “post-retro” influenced b 80’s synthpop industrial and goth rock. The band performed their first world tour, “Broken Minds,” in 2006. They released their second LP, Walking With Strangers, in 2007. They have become renowned for their highenergy live performances, drawing large, mixed crowds through their appeal to fans of a surprisingly wide range of genres. Equally comfortable playing intimate venues as they are on a festival stage, the band’s highlypraised performances will continue into the next year as they continue touring in support of their fourth full length album “Pins And Needles” Catch them in Sheffield at the Corp on the 17th.
DOWN!
Long-standing UK act, who have survived more musical trends than they’ve released albums, following the success of their recent retrospective dates, The Charlatans tour the UK in October in support of new album ‘Who We Touch’. That brings them to the O2 Academy in Sheffield on the 15th October. The band were perhaps at their commercial peak in the aftermath of original keyboard player Rob Collin’s untimely death. After leaving long-time label Beggar’s Banquet the band underwent a period of musical exploration, but have recently returned to their trademark sound. The Charlatans are one of Britain’s longest lasting indie success stories, with their latest album marking 20 years together. Sadly, the band’s celebrations have been thrown askew, with drummer Jon Brookes being rushed to hospital. Now undergoing treatment for a brain tumour, The Charlatans have vowed to complete their upcoming British tour. Recruiting a new drummer, the band seem keen to look back on their origins. Speaking to ClashMusic, singer Tim Burgess reflected on his roots in music. “I starting working as a labourer when I left school and as soon as I got paid on a Thursday I would blow all my money on records.” “I was always obsessed with music from a really early age. I remember telling my mum that I was going to do something in music and I always knew deep down that I would, I just didn’t know what exactly.” Continuing, the singer revealed how he came to become a member of The Charlatans. “I was always in bands after I left school and before I hooked up with The Charlatans. In that time, I tried everything: I was a synth player at first, then a bass player, then a guitar player, until I ended up as a singer in a band called The Electric Crayon Set. I opened up for The Charlatans one night and they happened to be recruiting a new singer. The rest is history.” Support for the band is the brilliant Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays fame, this is one not to be missed…nuff said!
GOING DUTCH
Bustling for position in the second wave of new bands streaming out of Manchester (Delphic, Hurts, et al), Dutch Uncles cross the Pennines for a free headline event at The Forum on Devonshire Street on Monday 18th of October. After previouly touring with Maximo Park, Futureheads, Bombay Bicycle Club and fellow Mancunians Delphic they released their brand new single ‘Fragrant’ last Friday and will follow that up with their debut UK album in the spring. Dutch Uncles have continually cited less mainstream influences such as King Crimson and Talking Heads in their PR blurb and although you can’t directly pick out the comparisons their ever changing time signatures, quick direction shifts and sometimes abrupt stops & starts (somewhat foals-esque) makes them stand out from the current crop of emerging young bands. Although sometimes rhythmically uncomfortable to listen to (do not run on a treadmill whilst trying to use Dutch Uncles to keep a steady pace), their complexity makes compelling and interesting listening. Lying in bed snuggled somewhere between Foals, Vampire Weekend and MGMT, Dutch Uncles skip away from the Indie-by-numbers routine prefered by the majority and fans of local upstarts The Hebbie Jeebies will find themselves drawn to the Manchester Five piece. All in all the Forum is the place to be next Monday if you like your music to induce a certain level of chin stroking to compliment your foot tapping.
artist: James Blunt album: Stay the Night reviews by presley release date: 18th October Has any artist been lambasted as much artist: KT Tunstall as poor James? His ‘You’re Beautiful’ album: (Still a) Weirdo single, which was a massive hit around release date: Out Now the world seemed to split opinion.
What a great title for a song! Love it. So, we’re off to a good start here then. KT has been away recording for the past two years and this is her first venture back. She actually first broke into the public eye with a live solo performance of her song “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” on Later... with Jools Holland, it really got her noticed. She released her multiplatinum selling debut album, ‘Eye to the Telescope’ on December 13, 2004. The albums lead single “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” was released on February 21, 2005 and it was one of the most successful singles and most radio-played songs of 2005 in this country. Further singles released from the album were “Under the Weather” and “Another Place to Fall” which were also successful. She has enjoyed commercial and critical success since, picking up three nominations before winning a BRIT Award, and a Grammy Award nomination. She also received an Ivor Novello Award, which is quite a feat on your first album. In 2007 the follow up album ‘Drastic Fantastic’ (another cool name I think) came out which gave her another hit with the single ‘Hold On’. So now we’ve got to today and what we got is typical KT Tunstall, which isn’t a criticism at all. Its acoustic guitar lead and is a nice little tune that features some cool lyrics and does have a laid back chorus that is pretty catchy. I think it’s not an easy job having a very simplistic song and really grabbing people with a hook, but KT has certainly managed it with this song. If you like your music to be relaxing, then you could probably love this.
Initially it was all positive, then gradually opinions seemed to change and a whole load of people found him extremely annoying. Why was this? The press would lead you to believe that it is because he is a bit posh, upper class and for some reason that’s annoying to some sections of society………hmm, I’m not so sure but fair enough, I can possibly see where they may be coming from. Other people from the press say it’s because his voice is too whiney. Now this argument does make a bit more sense. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and music is very much a personal thing, I can totally see what they mean and to me it does sound a tad whiney I must admit. But he doesn’t deserve the attacks he gets just because of a small matter such as this. Where I think lies the problem is huge success, we love to bring our stars down a peg or two and that’s whets happened to poor old James. So let’s concentrate on the music and James’ new single…………..well its very whiney……………no I’m joking, sorry. It’s a happy little song, starts of with the sound of waves. This surely would have been the perfect summer song, why it’s been released at this time of year I’m not quite sure?? That’s record companies for you eh! It’ll make you feel all jolly and happy, probably not if you don’t like the guy, but there’s nothing wrong with James Blunt if you’re into easy listening. He’s a good songwriter and I’m sure there’s a load of fans out there that will love this.

CLASSIC ROCK WITH ANDREW PLATTS
Andrew, who is also Managing Editor of The Mercury, was originally trained as a chorister, pianist and trombonist and he always intended to be a classical musician or teacher. Like all kids he was at a friends house, Steve Wade, playing records and Steve said the fateful words that were to change his life “Have you heard this”? The record in question was Pictures at an Exhibition by Emerson Lake and Plamer and the mix of classical music, rock with Hammond organ and Moog synthesizer, very new at the time, completely changed his view of music. “I just couldn’t believe what I was listening to as it seemed to embrace everything I liked” said Andrew. Focus was the first live band he saw at the City Hall and around the same time another friend, Andrew Nunnington, introduced him to Genesis at the time when Peter Gabriel was the frontman and to this day ELP, Focus and Genesis are still his favourite bands. “ I was very fortunate that my conversion to rock music came at a time when Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash etc. were massive and this shaped my musical taste. I was also fortunate to become a professional musician however somehow, although I ended up on ToTP, I played soul music, listened to rock music and still played in brass bands.” Andrew was also executive producer of 2 award winning CDs in 2000, Classic FM Magazine CD of the Year and Gramophone Magazine Critics Choice Award which resulted in him serving on the voting academy for the Brit Awards and Classical Brits for 8 years. He has played on BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, 4 and Classic FM and appeared on BBC TV perfoming on Songs of Praise and Last of the Summer Wine performing the role of the conductor of a brass band in a Christmas special. His role at the Mercury involves him in entertainment and music every day and he is delighted to be presenting the music he loves every Tuesday on Redroad.

City Road, Sheffield Tel: 0114 239 8156 Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Have you ever wondered what happens at Mind, Body and Spirit (MBS) events? What kind of people attend and exactly what the Parafest is? Firstly, I will explain what the Parafest involves. It is a MBS event with a difference. The ultimate purpose of the Parafest is to enable old souls to passover and enter the light. As I do not have a great deal of experience in sending spirits to the light I leave it to experts like the Parafest Organiser, Trance Medium, David Warmsby. Mind Body and Spirit Event The MBS event is an intoxicating mixture of retail and therapeutic experiences for you to see, touch and buy. There will be massage treatments, healing Aura, photography, books, vitamins, crystals and ethnic jewellery. There will be dances by Urban Gypsies, Native American Indians and many other great performers. Depending on which event you attend you will usually find the following contributors: psychics mediums, artistic painters (doing portraits of your spirit guide) and Pagans using fortune telling Runes (Runes are pieces of wood or pebbles marked with significant symbols and used to forecast the future). There will be a mediumship demonstration. I have undertaken platform work but it is not for me. An Aura graph I had taken revealed the colours green, yellow and purple. Yellow because I am a communicator and extremely inquisitive. Green because I am a healer. At the moment I am doing a healing course. Purple represents a visionary working at the highest levels of thought. It says I have acute psychic perception on a day to day basis. As I said in a previous article about Aura graphs, they are usually spot on. How does Aura photography work? Aura photography is based on Bio-feed technologies. When your hand is placed on a hand plate energy flows through your meridians and chakras and the colours of your emotional state are shown in the aura photo. Dancers and Healers The Urban Gypsies are new on the psychic scene. These dancers found fame through Britain’s got talent. They belly dance in their brightly coloured costumes. They are mystical and exciting. The Native American Indians dance and chant using different instruments. The healers are always a favourite. My friend Jean is a crystal healer. She uses a pendulum with rose quartz and tiny chakra coloured stones. This flows over the body and stops when their is a problem. She has offered me some crystal healing but I have my own psychic energy and don’t want it to change. Reki is another form of healing that is offered. I love the array of crystals, cards, candles and ethnic clothing. The incense attracts me as it smells so beautiful. I use Nag Champs which is from India.

Psychic Artists These are always booked up. They sketch your spirit guide. I have had one done and found my spirit guide is a Geisha Girl. I also have another guide which I have had for years. It is funny though how I am attracted to Japanese culture and read Japanese history books. Palm /Runes and Astrologers I don’t come across many palm readers at these events but Runes seem to be popular. These are usually read by Pagans (white witches). Those gifted with Rune magic are said to get their powers from Odin, the one eyed God of the Occult. Astrologers are also popular. You pay your money in advance and they do a forecast for you. It takes time and dedication to do these charts. I would love to have one done. A lady has a pallet of paints from which you pick 4 colours. She puts it on a frame and slosh a picture of mashed colours which looks like an angel. The dream catcher lady catches your dreams. I might get one of these done. There are authors selling their books. My mentor will be selling hers at the Parafest, I will buy it because I know Wendy is a fantastic medium. So that’s what happens at MBS events and I hope to see you at one soon. Come and say hello on the 16th October in the Masonic Hall, Worksop Notts! Next week coming up to Halloween - The Difference Between Ghosts and Spirits plus a few of my personal encounters. Blessings. Glynis

ANYONE FOR FISH AND CHIPS? MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas
If there’s one story that has turned my stomach in the last week, it’s the one about purple potatoes going on sale. I don’t know if it’s just me reverting back to my childhood ‘faddy’ state, but I took one look at these things cut up into chips and it nearly made me sick. That said, they did resemble overly burnt oven ones, but the thought of having purple coloured chips with my fish or beloved steak and kidney pies on my plate, and it horrifies me. I don’t know if I’m just too traditional perhaps? My chips should be yellow or slightly golden brown, but as a society we seem pre-occupied with trying to make our food look a little different from the way it should. Possibly, I should just shut up and pour some green tomato ketchup on them? Don’t forget to keep listening in to my Breakfast Show in the mornings this week for your chance to join us FREE at our big Magic music night with the Mercury newspaper, which is at the Crookes Club on Saturday October 23rd with tribute band, A Foreigner’s Journey. All you need to do is to unscramble the anagram giving the name of a classic rock band or artist, and if you’re a lucky caller with the correct answer you will win a pair of tickets. On the night, we’ll also be awarding a first drink free on arrival to Magic VIPs, which is just one of the many benefits that you can sign up to through our website at magicam.co.uk.
a set he gave us! This young man had hardly played a gig before, and yet his voice and his presence on stage captivated the audience – we are sure we will see much more of this artist – perhaps on much bigger stages in future. Best Female Vocalist Sarah Daniels followed, showing a surprising maturity and a tremendously powerful vocal range for such a young girl, her set being comprised of her own favourite tracks – it was obvious she was enjoying herself, and the crowd joined in enthusiastically in response. Closing the night were Best Newcomers Tytania, and it was obvious they had brought a great following. The first surprise was their age (some of them had trouble getting served at the bar!) and the second surprise was their musical talent. They belted out a series of up-to-date numbers including Lady Gaga, The Killers and Journey, and had the aisles filled with dancing by the end of the set. There was just time to squeeze in an encore before the to you on Magic in the bar closed, and the audience set Talk morning, off for home having witnessed a fantastic night’s entertainment Trevor from some of Clubland’s finest!
NEWS
LIMITED RIGHTS FOR WOMEN NOW ILLEGAL
The CIU has been looking at the Equality Act for some time now and has issued information to branches on how to advise member clubs on the impact on employment of the new Act, which was introduced on October 1. They were expecting clubs, however, to be allowed some time to comply with the Act in relation to membership, and had attempted to uncover the timetable for implementation of this part of the Act. They were informed only last week by the Equality and Human Rights Commission that the changes in the regulations for our clubs and associations were being introduced from October 1. The implications of the new Act extend the existing antidiscrimination legislation to cover a number of other so-called “protected characteristics” which now include a person’s sex. The nine “protected characteristics” are: age; disability; gender reassignment; marriage and civil partnership; pregnancy and maternity; race; religion and belief; and sex. The new legislation does not change the regulations relating to a club or association whose rules clearly state that they restrict their membership to men or women, but any club or association that allows more than one class of membership based on sex, or any of the other
protected characteristics, must no longer do so. Clubs who currently offer female members limited membership rights must now offer this to male members also. If a club decides to continue to offer full and limited membership rights then these must be available to all members, not just members of a particular gender. The Act also requires that election procedures for office holders and Committee members must be clear and open to all eligible members regardless of gender. The CIU’s interpretation of the Act is that no distinctions may be made based on gender so in effect all clubs (except for existing single-sex clubs) must become “gender-less”. The Union’s Rules Department is currently looking at the Union’s Rules and the Club Model Rules in order to identify any changes that must be made by the Union and member clubs to comply with the legislation. The Union will endeavour to provide more detailed guidance to clubs over the coming months. Given that membership subscriptions are due around the end of the year clubs will have little time to undertake the task of rule alterations prior to this. Clubs must ensure, however, that they adhere to the law as it now stands and membership of any type must be available to ALL club members, irrespective of gender.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally
Keep Warm, keep well 20,000th Catalytic – winter planning for Customer for older people Clothing Sheffield Stay Put By Kath Horner, NHS Sheffield Brian and Hazel Shaw of Sheffield are having a double celebration after receiving much needed work to their home and also being the 20,000th customer of the Sheffield Stay Put Home Improvement Agency – part of Yorkshire Housing. Brian who has recently left hospital following a serious brain operation has some mobility problems that have made household tasks difficult. After a phone call to the Home Improvement Agency, a handyman visited the couple and installed a grab rail in the bathroom and a custom made device that raised their sofa enabling Brian to get up easily. Hazel, who cares for Brian, said: “Brian has been very poorly and has been in and out of hospital for six years. Following a brain operation getting about became more difficult. “Just having a grab rail above the bath and the sofa raising device has already been so helpful. We are so happy; the service has been quick, efficient and best of all cheap.” Brian added: “it’s the little things that make such a difference. We wouldn’t be without it now.” Housing operates five home improvement agencies throughout Yorkshire with an aim to help elderly and vulnerable people stay living in their home independently for as long as possible. The service is available to people who are older, disabled or on a low income. To repair, improve, maintain or adapt their homes. All the Home Improvement Agencies operated by Yorkshire Housing are local, not-forprofit organisations. Mervyn Jones, Chief Executive at Yorkshire Housing said: “Often some of our customers cannot leave hospital until we have made an alteration to their home, so it’s great to know that a small change can make such a difference.” If you would like us to help you with a change to your home to help make getting about easier then please contact. 0114 256 4270
Now that the weather has started to turn autumnal, it is worth casting our minds back to last year. Sheffield was swathed in blankets of snow on more than one occasion and low temperatures meant many of us ‘felt the cold’. It is important to keep warm during the winter. As the temperatures get colder, older people are susceptible to catching colds or flu. If your body temperature drops then there are potential health risks including heart attack, stroke or breathing problems. If you do get seasonal flu the following advice is useful: Contact your GP for advice or an appointment
The University of Sheffield Chemistry Department, is developing a new laundry additive, which will work to purify air, by binding polluting gases. Do you work or live in Sheffield? Are you interested in air quality and air pollution in the city? The project is putting together focus groups (group interviews) to generate discussion around air quality in Sheffield. Focus groups will be led by the researcher, and you will be asked to express your opinions and experiences in relation to air quality in Sheffield. Where? At the Howard Pub, on Howard Street. When? Until 28 October, times can be arranged to suit you and other participants. • Stay at home, rest and keep warm Daytime preferred. • Drink plenty of water to replace Would you like to participate (you will be fluid you may have lost by sweating given a £10 voucher for your time), if so please contact Anna at Ggp04adk@shef. • Eat as well as you are able • If you live on your own, let friends ac.uk or ring 0114 2227973 and leave a message. and neighbours know you are

unwell It is important that you have your flu vaccine in the autumn, before flu starts to circulate. The flu vaccine is FREE if you are aged over 65 and your GP practice will arrange an appointment for you.
To keep warm indoors during cold weather it is better to wear several layers of thin clothing rather than one thick layer – the warmth from your body gets trapped between layers. It is worthwhile to use this principle when you are outdoors – thin layers under your coat, gloves, hat or headscarf will help you to keep warm. Now is the time to get your Christmas list ready if you need new outdoor clothing! Wearing the right clothing in bed is just as important as wrapping up well outdoors – thermal underwear, pyjamas and bed socks will all keep you warm. Your bedroom should ideally be at a temperature of 210 (700 F). Temperatures can drop significantly during the night so it might be worth you taking a hot drink in a flask to bed in case you wake in the early hours. If you need advice about your health you can contact NHS Direct on 0845 46447.

“Doing your bit”
DRINK DRIVING

Solicitor Simon Gwynne of Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors answers questions about drink driving.
Most people like to feel they are ‘doing their bit’ for charity. But do you know how most charities achieve the level of income they need to continue their good work? There are various methods charities use to attract donations - from the representatives on the street with their clipboards, clothing bags that are posted through your letterbox, sponsoring a child or animal and, of course, the monthly subscriptions so many charities now favour. But did you know that the majority of charity revenue comes from legacies left in Wills? Leaving a charitable donation in a Will is a great way of giving back to charities that mean the most to you - a favourite cause or a charity that has helped you or your loved ones. However, due to the recession, charitable donations on the whole are down from what they were in previous years and this has had a huge impact on the day to day running of many charities. Research has shown that the top ten charities in the UK gain the majority of their funding from legacies left to them in Wills. But not many people realise that many of the top charities also have local branches to which legacies can be left directly, thereby ensuring that your local area benefits from your gift. The careful drafting of a Will leaving a charitable donation is therefore essential to ensure it reflects the specific wish of the Testator. Most people know how important it is to make a Will, although studies have shown that a staggering 70% of the adult population is yet to complete this task. Some people do not have any close family members or friends to whom they wish to leave their assets, which may explain why they believe a Will is not essential. However, including charities as beneficiaries in a Will is a great way of making sure that a lifetime’s hard work is not left to the Crown or Government. Gifts left to UK registered charities pass tax free and even a little gift can go a long way. Collective Legal Solutions are the Inheritance Planning and Wealth Protection specialists, offering home visits throughout the Yorkshire region. For further information or to arrange a free home visit, please call 0800 1105221.
What is the penalty for drink driving? Even if you are only just over the limit you will face an automatic disqualification of 12 months. Magistrates have the ability to increase this up to 60 months for repeat offenders, or for first time offenders with very high alcohol readings. In extreme cases a prison sentence may be given. Can I refuse to take a breathalyser test? Many people believe that if they refuse to provide a sample of breath, blood or urine, that they can deprive the Police the evidence needed to convict them of drink driving. Whilst this is true for the offence of drink driving, it is likely to lead to the Police charging you for a separate offence of failing to provide a specimen. Refusing to provide a sample for analysis at the police station is classed as more serious than drink driving and has an offence starting point of custody. It is not a defence to a charge of failing to provide a specimen that a person was neither driving nor in charge of a vehicle. If the police have reasonable grounds for suspecting that a person was driving, they may require the provision of a specimen. This should be provided and if it reveals a level above the legal limit, the defence of anyone charged would be that they were not driving or in charge. If you can show a ‘reasonable excuse’ for not providing a specimen, such as a medical condition causing breathing difficulties which hinder you from completing a breathalyser test, this may provide a defence to a charge of failing to provide a specimen. The police nevertheless have the right in such

TRIBUTE TO CLAIRE RAYNER Counsel and Care, the national charity, pays tribute to Claire Rayner OBE, whose death has been announced today (12 October 2010). The charity is grateful to Claire for all of her support and campaigning over the years on health and social care issues, including older people’s care and support. Claire Rayner fronted Counsel and Care’s Carers Week Appeal in 2008, and was due to give Counsel and Care’s annual Graham Lecture in September 2010 until she became seriously ill. The lecture was given by Claire’s fellow agony aunt Denise Robertson. Caroline Bernard, Deputy Chief Executive
23
and lead organiser of the Graham Lecture, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of Claire Rayner’s death. Claire did so much to support Counsel and Care by being the face of our one of annual appeals, and despite her failing health and frailty, she agreed to do our annual lecture this year, before it became clear that she would not be able to continue with her public engagements. “Claire was a tireless campaigner for better care and support, and as she herself became older, she helped a number of charities deliver their messages, and brought the important issues around the challenges faced by older people and their carers to the attention of politicians and the media”. “She will be deeply missed by all those who had the pleasure of working with her”..
circumstances to require the provision of a sample of blood or urine, and they are entitled to dictate whether the alternate sample should be blood or urine. Is it possible to mount a defence against drink driving charges? Many defences focus on the procedures followed by the police during a drink driving arrest. Failure by the police to carry out any of the procedure correctly may allow the charge to be successfully challenged. Strict procedures exist which set out the protocol for dealing with someone who has failed a roadside breath test. This initial roadside test offers an indication only to the police officer to determine if they have grounds for arrest and is not recognised by the Courts as giving a reading that can lead to a conviction. The second stage of the process is at the police station where further evidence has to be taken. This can be in the form of a fixed position breathalyser or by a urine or blood test. Again all of these tests require strict procedures to be followed by the person administering the test. Any defence for drink driving offences requires an experienced lawyer with specialist knowledge. Norrie Waite & Slater have police station cover 24 hours a day 365 days of the year. AVOID ʻTOXIC CHOCʼ MORNINGSIDE CATTERY SYNDROME - PDSA Heated Cattery WARNS PET OWNERS Luxury Open All Year While millions indulge their sweet tooth during National Chocolate Week (11 to 17 October 2010) pet owners are being warned to avoid ‘toxic choc’ syndrome, which can cause agony or even death for four-legged friends. Every year, vets treat hundreds of pets whose snacking-habit has led to distress and misery, according to animal charity PDSA. This is because human chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly poisonous to many animals. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “Owners should never feed their pets human chocolate. Not only is it toxic for them, but the high sugar content isn’t good for their waistline or teeth.” High quality ‘posh’ chocolate has the largest cocoa content and poses the biggest risk to the nation’s pets. An average (30g to 45g) bar of dark chocolate can contain over 700mg of theobromine. This is more than enough to fatally poison a Yorkshire Terrier! The effects of chocolate poisoning in dogs usually appear within 12 hours and can last up to three days. Initial signs can include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, a tender tummy and restlessness. These symptoms can then progress to hyperactivity, tremors, abnormal heart rate, hyperthermia and rapid breathing. In severe cases there are fits, heart beat irregularities, coma or even death. Sean continues: “If you can’t resist giving your pet a treat, make sure it’s a suitable pet treat or better still, give them some extra playtime and attention instead.” For further information on PDSA or free pet health advice visit www.pdsa.org.uk.

by Clint Walker
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been fishing a new venue near Chester. As usual, I’ve done my internet homework instead of just turning up and chucking a bait into the peg nearest the car park. My first visit consisted of PVA bags and quality boilies from SAE bait developments presented fairly close to an island margin at about 80 yards. My only moment of excitement was a dropped run which could have been a line bite if I’m honest! A short day session was all I had time for, so I wasn’t too surprised to blank. (Feels a bit too familiar sadly!) I did take the opportunity to walk around the lake and have a look into some of the various bays and backwaters in an attempt to find some of the elusive residents, but to no avail. I had taken the chance to speak to one of the Nash consultants who had fished the water and dark baits over big beds of freebies were apparently the way to go. For my second visit, I fully intended to take good advice and took several kilos of sweet corn, pellets and mini boilies to put out a good spread and hopefully tempt some fish...... Guess what? Yup, blanked again. It got me thinking though, do you just take the advice of other anglers as gospel? If you are told that the water is 10’ deep, do you check it? Do you believe that there is a ‘going’ bait and that you should use only that? It is something I’ve been guilty of in the past, but no more. I learned my lesson a few seasons ago when I fished a place in Warwickshire; I asked what the best way to go would be and was informed by the locals that “..18mm boilies, a 2oz lead and short hooklink”, was the way forward, just like everyone else who wasn’t catching! I opted to fish a method feeder with a couple of 10mm boilies on the hook; on the day, 5 fish came out and I had 4 of them! Better still 2 of them were 20lb+! Since then I’ve often tried to do something different to what the fish (and other anglers) expect. Back to my Chester venue; although I was struggling to catch, I wasn’t going to completely waste my time,
so I got the marker rod out and had a feel about to see if what I had been told was correct. The 22’ of water turned out to be only 14’ shallowing up quite sharply within a couple of rod lengths of the bank, and the sandy lake bed turned out to be 2 beds of silt with a gap of roughly 15’ between them. I found a gully that dropped a further 2 feet running parallel to the bank at a range of 50 yards, and a plateau that was between me and the second silt bed; not bad for a mornings work and almost completely the opposite of what I had been told! Moral of the story? Don’t believe everything you hear!! Tight lines, Clint

QUEENS PARK RANGERS FOOTBALL SCOUTING REPORT by The Mercury Scout
The subject of this weeks scouting report is former Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock’s new charges Queens Park Rangers. When I saw them play away from home recently they played with a conventional 4-4-2 shape throughout the game, including when making three second half substitutions. Until these substitutions Shaun Derry played as the holding player in the middle of the park with Alejandro Faurlin in a more advanced role. When clearing the ball out from the back, former Sheffield United favourite Paddy Kenny’s primary target was Heidar Helguson, whilst he was on the pitch, with the striker pulling out wide on the left to receive the ball most of the time. Helguson won precious little, if anything, in the air, but this did have the result of concentrating QPR’s play down the left side of the park as they pressed to win the ball back on that side of the field. After his introduction as a second half substitute, Patrick Agyemang was the target in more central areas and he competed for the ball more successfully than Helguson had done. Pace in the team is provided by Adel Taarabt, Hogan Ephraim and Jamie Mackie. The back four are reasonably mobile without being exceptionally quick. QPR struggled for an aerial presence in attack until the introduction of Agyemang particularly, but also former Sheffield Wednesday player Leon Clarke, in the second half. QPR’s other substitute, Akos Buzsaky was a bit of a gamble as he is more of an attacking midfielder and provided less protection in front of the back four than had Derry. Kenny comes out quickly to clear up anything played in behind a back four who pushed out when in possession, but dropped back to defend quite deeply when possession was lost. Collectively, the back four look to be reasonably mobile and they cover across behind each other quite well. Kaspars Gorkss can be a little slow to close down at times and the full backs can be beaten by opponents attacking them with pace whilst sticking close to the touchline. Centre back Matthew Connolly had to cover across behind Bradley Orr quite often as the right full back continually pushed forward into the space vacated when right winger Mackie moved inside. This could leave the central channels exposed when the opposing team counter attacked. Left full back Clint Hill tended to be more disciplined in his approach to the game, staying back behind the ball to concentrate on his defensive duties. Gorkss is nearly always the first to come out and make the first challenge, both in the air and on the ground, with Connolly covering behind him. Occasionally Hill needed Gorkss to cover behind him at times when opponents exposed his lack of mobility. Derry played deeper than Faurlin, playing just in front of the back four and doing a good job helping to protect them. However, he is not the most mobile of players and quick opponents can get down the side and play the ball around him. Faurlin had more freedom to press forward, but he still concentrated much of his efforts on containing the opposing team’s midfield trio. Both central midfield players worked hard to close down and compete for the ball and provide protection for the back four, and the two wide men also helped to do this. However, as they were numerically disadvantaged in the middle they did struggle at times to contain the movement and passing of their opponent’s midfield trio when they pressed forward. Ephraim gave them some width on the left, but rarely to get beyond the opposing full back to get to the goal line. On the right Mackie attempted to do so occasionally but he was well contained by the opposing team’s wide players and he often failed to produce an end product as he was marshalled towards the corner flag. Mackie did come inside a lot, off the ball, to support the strikers, particularly when play developed down the opposite side of the park. Clarke came on as a substitute to play on the left wing, but he is not really a wide player. Therefore I was surprised when Ephraim continued to play through the middle alongside Agyemang. Clarke did little down the wide left channel but he did provide an assist for a goal with a deft first time pass. Buzsaky provided less defensive cover than the player he had replaced, but he gave them more attacking options down the inside right channel, whilst still putting in some work to close down. Taarabt was lively at times when the ball was played into his feet, but other than this QPR offered very little threat in the final third in the first half. When they played the ball long down the park Helguson was singularly unsuccessful when attempting to win the ball in the air. Precious little service came in from the wide positions and much of the central midfield duo’s efforts to play the ball through the centre channels were well contained by the hard work of the opposing team’s midfield and defence. Helguson can be dangerous when showing good movement, albeit with limited pace, to get on the end of anything played in behind the opposing defence. However his opportunities to do so in this game were limited by a well organised defence with the best chance he had being ruled out by the assistant referee flagging for an offside infringement. Mackie often came inside from the right wing to provide support and a threat as a third striker when play progressed down the opposite side of the park. The second half introduction of Agyemang had an immediate impact on the game with his strength and physical presence providing QPR with a much needed focal point. His pace was also a constant threat. However, it wasn’t until second half injury time that the potential of his threat turned into tangible results. Following the substitutions Ephraim also worked more through the centre channels and he was more effective when doing so as he was able run at the opposing team’s centre backs more productively than he had done at the right back. The main aerial threats at set pieces are Gorkss, Hill and Orr who all go forward for set pieces to attack with runs from the edge of the area supported by Helguson. Whilst on the field Taarabt took all of QPR’s set piece kicks. His deliveries from corner kicks could have been more productive as he played two of them out to the edge of the box and a third was wasted when failing to clear the first defender’s knee caps. A couple of strikes he had on goal from set pieces were high and wide. After being substituted Buzsaky took the kicks. Kicks in their own half of the field were taken by Kenny and played long to target Helguson, almost invariably unsuccessfully, and later Agyemang after he came on as a substitute. When QPR defend against long free kicks, Derry drops back to join the back four picking up opponents across the edge of the penalty area. When defending free kicks awarded a little nearer to their penalty area, Taarabt stayed up front with Helguson dropping deeper to stand in front of the taker. All other players picked up whilst holding a line at the edge of the penalty area. When defending against a free kick awarded in a central position from where a direct strike on goal could be made, QPR used five men in a defensive wall with Ephraim positioned just to the left of it. Hill picked up on the left, Mackie and Orr picked up on the right. Taarabt was left up the field in an advanced position. The two full backs took the throws on their respective sides of the field. Both of them targeted Helguson down the line with throws of average length from defensive positions. Some throws were played back to Kenny. With throws further forward they played the ball short to feet. There were no long throws played long into the opposing box.

CHAMPIONS WEEKEND HORSE RACING by Timelord
It’s the second leg of the supposed “Autumn Double”, the Cesarewitch, at Newmarket this Saturday. You’ve simply got to hand it to them (the “Bookies” I mean) – only they could be so greedy as to try to entice punters into placing a double on two of the most impossible handicaps imaginable, the Cambridgeshire and the Cesarewitch. Don’t even try to land this one, it’s just not worth the time and effort since you would be lucky to do it once in a lifetime! It ought to be a far more profitable use of your time to concentrate your fire power on the Group races, the Group 1’s Dewhurst and Champion Stakes and the Group 2 Challenge Stakes where you have at least a realistic chance of a decent return. Also at the first Cheltenham meeting of the new NH season there are some attractive races, two of which are to be shown on TV. Newmarket: Group 2 Victor Chandler Challenge Stakes (7 Furlongs): Arabian Gleam carries the burden of top rating in my system but has looked out of sorts this year. Those in behind are not far away from him. Several have run well recently but the one I like best is Barry Hills’ Red Jazz who finished ½ length third behind Poet’s Voice in the Group 1 QEII at Ascot last time out, where he held every chance but had no extra in the last 100 yards. That was over a stiff mile so this 7 furlongs test at a lower level should be right up his street. Group 1 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes (7 furlongs): Can Frankel make mincemeat of his rivals here? Quite possibly,
but he is no certainty despite all the press hype so far. Yes he’s been an absolute monster and very impressive to date, landing a Group 2 by 10 lengths over a mile at Ascot last time. He also holds my top speed rating and is unbeaten. Do I think he can take this prize? Yes, but the nagging doubts are the drop back in distance and that he is taking on a better class of animal here. The opposition is headed by Dream Ahead (an unbeaten dual Group 1 winner) and the Godolphin hotpot Saamidd (also unbeaten including an impressive Group 2 success over this distance at Doncaster). Add to these the similarly unbeaten Native Khan (including a Group 3 win), some other none-too-shabby English rivals and a significant Irish contingent and you can see why there could be doubt about the outcome. Don’t forget that Dream Ahead won his last race impressively by 9 lengths and Saamidd also won his last race impressively by 2 ¼ lengths. The current best prices for the principals are: Frankel – 4/6; Dream Ahead – 7/2; Saamidd – 5/1; and Native Khan – 16/1. Frankel may well annihilate the others but he will have to get the likes of Dream Ahead off the bridle to do so and I reckon that, at the current prices, on balance the value lies with Dream Ahead, so he is the selection. I wouldn’t try to put you off an each way punt on Glor Na Mara either since his form behind Pathfork reads well. My speed ratings for the race: Frankel - 152; Glor Na Mara – 146; Oracle – 137; Dream Ahead – 136; Elzaam – 121; Waiter’s Dream -117; Zaidan – 116; Saamidd – 115; Master of Hounds – 112; Seville – 108; Roderic O’Connor – 102; Native Khan – 91. Group 1 Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes (10 furlongs): It is with some regret that I desert Poet’s Voice for this one but, untried beyond a mile, the ¼ mile step up in distance may not be in his favour.
The one I like most is the French horse Vision D’Etat for whom this race looks tailor-made. A previous multiple Group 1 winner, and winner of the Hong Kong Cup over this trip, he looks to have everything in his favour here and is a relatively confident choice. He may have most to fear from his compatriot Fuisse. Twice Over can “make the book” for Vision D’Etat and he rates the value choice in my opinion. The totesport.com Cesarewitch (Heritage Handicap) (18 furlongs): Go make a cup of tea while they set off to run from Suffolk to Cambridgeshire – you’ll have plenty of time. Lots of in-form animals contest this one and it looks up to the normal impossible standard as the jumps trainers pitch up against the flat boys. You will need a fit and in-form animal for this one and almost any of the current 41 entrants could win. Lang Shining has won his last three starts and both Regal Park and Royal Trooper have won their last two. Theola won well at the course recently and other recent winners on the flat are: Ajaan; Precision Break; Admiral Barry; My Arch; Hawk Mountain and Act of Kalanisi. Of the rest both Rangefinder and La Vecchia Scuola have been running well this year. I make that 12 with a mention so far but I am not going for any of these. The one I like best is Brian Ellison’s Palomar. His form figures don’t look too impressive at first sight but he won a hurdle race at Market Rasen on 25 September and should be fit enough to do himself justice here. He is carrying only a feather weight and, from old flat form in France, has a fair enough shout. Currently priced up at 50/1he rates an each way punt, but do look for a bookie that offers 5, or even possibly 6 places, rather than the big four’s measly 4, which in a race like this is nothing but high street robbery. Of the rest I like Admiral Barry best but he is no value at a shockingly short 8/1 Fav. Royal Trooper and Lang Shining (both best priced at 66/1) and Act of Kalanisi (50/1) all offer better (each way) value. Cheltenham: Zeturf.com Handicap Chase (Class 2) (2m4f110yds): Passato and Frosted Grape have
been mopping up in lesser races in the early part of the season. Both have decent speed figures and Frosted Grape, in particular, did well when losing out to Sir Ian at Worcester last time out. Mister McGoldrick is my top rated animal but, for all that he runs consistently well at Cheltenham, he has only won once at the track and is now well into the veteran stage at the age of 13. Moon Over Miami is second best in my ratings, followed by Frosted Grape in third but the one I like best is my fourth top Chaninbar. On a couple of occasions last term this seven year old, trained by Milton Harris, looked as though he could be one to follow this year. He is a speculative choice to open his account with a win this term. Passato looks best of the rest. Sportingbet.com Handicap Hurdle (Class 2 ) (2m 110yds): Several of these met more than once last term. On balance Punchestown Grade 1 winner Barizan, comes out best so he is the selection. Dangers abound however and any lack of fitness could be punished by the likes of Carlito Brigante, Clerk’s Choice, Ultimate and Orsippus. The last-named did this column a big favour when going in at Aintree at a tasty 40/1, where he beat Barizan by 3 ¼ lengths. However, Barizan returned the favour in no uncertain manner when he won by 12 lengths at Punchestown. If Barizan is absent my second choice would be Carlito Brigante with Orsippus a (sentimental) each way third choice. Summary: (see text above for reserves in case of non runners) Newmarket: Challenge Stakes: Red Jazz; Dewhurst Stakes: Dream Ahead; Champion Stakes: Vision D’Etat; Cesarewitch Handicap: Palomar; Cheltenham: Zeturf.com Handicap Chase: Chaninbar; Sportingbet.com Handicap Hurdle: Barizan. Good luck!
MILLERS THIRD STRAIGHT DRAW MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United were held to their third straight league draw after Nicky Law’s first half opener was cancelled out by a resolute Stevenage. In the first ever meeting between the two sides the Millers took the lead in first half stoppage time after Law rifled into the top corner, but the visitors leveled through John Mousinho with just eight minutes remaining. Mark Bradley retained his place in midfield after impressing against Burton Albion in midweek, whilst Andy Warrington, Johnny Mullins, Tom Newey and Adam Le Fondre returned after not featuring in the Millers’ midweek triumph in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. The game started slowly and had to wait until the 14th minute for the first attempt on goal from either side.It came after a long ball forward wasn’t dealt with effectively by Stevenage, allowing Kevin Ellison to shoot on the half-volley from 20 yards and force Chris Day into a decent save to his right. The visitors responded well and were only prevented from taking the lead by an excellent save from Warrington on 19 minutes. Chris Holroyd broke into the penalty area and pulled back to an unmarked Stacy Long, whose shot from 12 yards was blocked by Warrington’s legs. Warrington was involved again a minute later after being called into action to save a shot from Ronnie Henry from 25 yards. The returning ‘keeper went down to his right to parry before smothering the ball at the second attempt.
STEELERS WIN AS WEAPON X-PELLED ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle
The Steelers thrilled fans with an emphatic win over their nearest, but far from dearest, rivals after the Nottingham Panthers produced one of the most undisciplined displays fans had ever seen at the NIC. The Panthers’ attitude was plain from the start, as player-coach Corey Neilson turned the home net around and pushed it to the boards to prevent Steelers’ Jason Hewitt firing his customary end of warm-up shot down the ice and into the net. Undeterred, Hewitt fired a couple of pucks the length of the ice before skating off. Neilson however remained on the ice, accompanied by his team captain, and much-hyped new signing Alex Penner, who fired a shot down into the opposite goal and show-boated as if he had scored the game winner. The tensions were running high from the first whistle, and it was Jason Hewitt who took the first penalty of the game less than two minutes in. Rob Globke took a brutal check to the head from Panthers’ Lepine, who received 30 minutes in penalties and was ejected from the game. Ex-NHLer Neil Clark took 17 minutes in penalties from the resulting fight with Lepine. Any discipline the Panthers had shown began to evaporate very rapidly, and tempers began to fray. Steelers opened the scoring much to the away fans’ delight at 8:58 with a powerplay goal from Ashley Tait, who also assisted on the Steelers’ second goal, scored by Jeff Legue at 36:34. Jade Galbraith took a misconduct penalty at 35:39 and, though the rest of the penalties in the second period were minors, eight were called. In the third
37
period the Panthers fell apart completely. Ashley Tait popped in his second of the night at 41:29, and just five seconds later Galbraith was ejected from the game and it looked like his team might have been fired up and into action as David Clarke scored the home team’s first goal. Any chance the Panthers had of getting back into the game was shot, however, as the Panthers’ most hyped signing of the season Alex Penner was ejected from the game. Originally taking a roughing minor penalty “Weapon-X”, as he has been dubbed by fans, argued and abused officials until his penalty was raised first to a misconduct penalty, and then a game misconduct, as he fought the officials’ attempts to remove him from the ice, returning from the locker corridor to shout further abuse from the bench before finally being ushered away by his own bench staff. To add insult to injury, Steelers’ Clark scored the final goal of the game, giving them a 4-1 victory. The Steelers’ toughest weekend of the season so far continued as the Belfast Giants came to visit on Sunday. The Steelers looked tired, but fought on regardless despite being 3-1 down at the end of the first period. In the second period the Giants added another nail to the coffin, but Steelers’ Robert Dowd brought the score to 4-2, before playercoach Ben Simon closed the gap even further with the Steelers’ 3rd goal. The Giants scored a goal on both sides of the second period break, through Prudden and Bayrack and, though the Steelers managed to close the gap once again with a goal from Jeff Legue, the Giants took the points. The Steelers’ next game is a Challenge Cup game on Wednesday 13th October at Ice Sheffield. Tickets are available from the Steelers office (0114 242 35 35).

The Millers did improve for the final few minutes of the first half but failed to test Day in the Stevenage goal until the third minute of stoppage time.Skipper Nick Fenton headed clear a Stevenage free kick and set up an opportunity to break.Le Fondre fed Law, who took advantage of a slip in the visitors’ defence to smash the ball into the roof of the net to give the Millers the lead against the run of play. After a scrappy start to the second half Fenton’s name was entered into the referee’s notebook after he upended Holroyd on halfway. The first real chance of the half came on the hour mark. Stevenage worked the ball from left to right before it fell to Michael Bostwick who rifled a shot goalwards, but Warrington made a smart stop low to his left. On 67 minutes Borough threatened again when Peter Winn hammered a shot goalwards from the angle which Warrington tipped around the post. On 72 minutes an Ellison corner was converted by the head of Fenton but referee Mr. Scott ruled the goal out with the centre half accused of pushing in the area. After a period of pressure the away side grabbed an equaliser. The Millers failed to clear their lines and after David Bridges cut the ball back into the area John Mousinho ran onto the loose ball to side foot beyond Andy Warrington. The Millers almost had a second goal in bizarre fashion. A free-kick by Tom Newey was launched into the area which should have made for an easy claim by Chris Day, only for the ‘keeper to fumble the ball but clutch it again at the second attempt.
RONNIE FRUSTRATED MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk
Ronnie Moore was left a frustrated figure after his Millers side were pegged back with eight minutes remaining after a 1-1 draw with Stevenage. The Millers lead after a Nicky Law strike in first half stoppage time but couldn’t capitalise on their advantage leaving John Mousinho the opportunity to share the spoils late on. “I thought we defended well but I was unhappy with the way we went forward,” revealed Ronnie in his post match interview. “We need somebody who will get on the ball and take the sting out of the game when we are under the kosh. They have had 21 crosses into our box today where as we have had only 10. We are the home team and our ‘keeper is having to make too many saves and that is disappointing. We should be the team putting the opposition on the back foot when we are home.” Ronnie was pleased with the way the Millers took the lead when Nicky Law finished well just before the half time interval. “We hit them on the break, thrown bodies forward and it was a great finish by Lawsy,” added Ronnie. “He nearly scored again just after half time when he cut inside but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. We didn’t do enough of that. In general we played too many long balls and I felt sorry for the two strikers because everything we have played forward has been high and their centre halves have dominated. We had hardly any service into feet. In the end we have scrapped a decent point but you need more than a point when you are playing at home.”

ROLL SLEEVES UP SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Daniel Bogdanovic is urging his team-mates to remain optimistic and is adamant United can still be a force to be reckoned with this term. Bogdanovic feels the Blades have been somewhat unfortunate in recent weeks and hopes the current international break can work in their advantage: “We must believe and I am sure we do, from the Gaffer to the kitman. We know our luck is bound to change and we will come out of this run a stronger team. “We need to roll our sleeves up and remain positive - this break will give everyone a chance to get fully fit and we will be raring to go against Burnley.” The Maltese striker has impressed in both his starts at Nottingham Forest and against Watford and is confident a revival isn’t too far away:

“I’m enjoying my time here to a certain point, but I would be happy not playing if the team were winning. THE FUNNY WAY WE TRY TO PLAY OUR PART FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton
Football is a game packed full of routines and superstitions. Very rarely does an interview with one of the game’s overpaid megastars not include a question about which sock they put on first or the colour of their lucky pants. During Michael Brown’s successful spell at the Lane it was well known that he found it of the utmost importance to be the last Blades player to enter the field of play at the start of each game. But it would be wrong to suggest that such superstitions are monopolised by players alone. As a person I am possibly the least superstitious individual you could wish to come across, but as a football fan the most. This has led to a range of bizarre rituals that looking back have never had any effect on the game. As a youngster it was strict mantra to buy a bag of aniseed balls before every game. A brief lapse saw the purchase of a bag of mint imperials for the play off defeat against Palace at Wembley in ‘97. Considering the result I made sure that never happened again. After a 4-2 defeat at the Walkers Stadium a few years ago, I inexplicably put it down to the fact I’d enjoyed a Chicken Balti pie before the game. Needless to say the delicacy has stayed off the menu ever since (as much as it has pained me). Most recently a traditional pint glass tankard has followed me to almost every away game for the last two seasons. Due to an unfortunate ‘kitchen cupboard contents meets bric a brac’ malfunction, this historic practice must now come to an end. But considering I haven’t seen the Blades win away since September ‘09 despite only missing five games in that time, maybe it was time for the tankard to go. So with the passing of my trusty tankard, let this stand as tribute to all of our silly superstitions past and present.

THREE ON THE BOUNCE FOR OWLS
MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk Lewis Buxton was the unlikely matchwinner as Wednesday continued their mini-unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory over Leyton Orient. The defender rose high at the back post early in the second half to head his second goal for the Owls but the O’s could count themselves unlucky to leave S6 empty-handed. Russell Slade’s side went close on four occasions but failed to make the most of their chances, leaving Wednesday relieved to store all three points. Alan Irvine made five changes to the starting line-up from the dramatic penalty shootout triumph against Chesterfield in the JPT on Wednesday night. Jon Otsemobor, Tommy Spurr, James O’Connor, Tommy Miller and Marcus Tudgay all returned to duty, while Jermaine Johnson took a place in the squad for the first time this season after recovering from a knee injury. Mark Beevers and Giles Coke sat out the game after picking up knocks during that epic clash with the Spireites. Orient arrived at Hillsborough in the bottom three and were on the back foot in the early exchanges as the Owls knocked the ball around with confidence. The visitors seemed content to sit deep with the intention of hitting Wednesday on the counter, which is exactly what they did six minutes in when Dean Cox looped an accurate cross into the box that Alex Revell met firmly with his head only to be denied by Nicky Weaver’s acrobatic save. That was a warning shot to Wednesday, who responded with a sharp run by Gary Teale down the left that forced rookie keeper Lee Butcher into evasive action. The hosts saw plenty of the ball without penetrating the Orient defence and that allowed the Londoners to build on a solid

rearguard foundation. And this they did, with only poor finishing preventing a half time lead when firstly Cox blazed a decent chance over the bar before the same player had an even better opportunity but Darren Purse came to Wednesday’s rescue with a superb goal line clearance. Dangerman Cox warmed Weaver’s hands from distance seven minutes before the break and after their promising start, it was the Owls that went down the tunnel more grateful for the whistle. Wednesday fashioned a good move five minutes into the second half when Darren Potter found space down the left and his low cross found Tudgay, whose drilled effort was deflected wide for a corner - from which the Owls took the lead. Teale’s corner was hit long and with pace to the back post, where Buxton was on hand to head firmly past Butcher. The goal triggered a more positive approach from Orient and a goalmouth scramble minutes later almost brought an equaliser. But the Owls survived that brief flurry and instead came close to doubling their advantage at the other end, with Tudgay shooting wide after bursting through on goal from outside the penalty area. The game then settled into an even affair with few chances, although Wednesday certainly shaded the possession. Teale and Spurr linked up well down the left, sending in a string of crosses that threatened the Orient goal. The Londoners’ stood firm, though, but failed to produce in the final third and Buxton’s strike proved decisive. Owls: Weaver, Otsemobor, Purse, Buxton, Spurr, Miller, Potter, O’Connor, Teale, Morrison (Mellor 78), Tudgay Unused substitutes: Jameson, Hinds, Jones, Sedgwick, Johnson, Heffernan Leyton Orient: Butcher, Omosuzi, Chorley, Forbes, Cox (Tehoue 87), Dawson, McGleish, Chambers, Revell (Walker 71) Daniels, Spring Unused substitutes: Lovelock, Brown, Jarvis, Cestor, Smith
IRVINE REFLECTS MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS ON ORIENT FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob VICTORY GAFFERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine believes that results like the one secured against Leyton Orient, could well stand the club in good stead come the end of the season. The Owls secured a narrow 1-0 victory over a battling Orient side at Hillsborough, thanks to Lewis Buxton’s second half header from a Gray Teale corner. It was just Buxton’s second goal for the club and ensured that Wednesday made it four games without defeat. “We didn’t play well and we know that,” Irvine said after the game. “The dressing room was an extremely quiet place after the final whistle, but at the end of the day we’ve won the game. “At the end of the season, results like that could well prove to be the difference. We all want to play free-flowing, attractive football, but unfortunately it doesn’t happen every week, and you’ve just got win the game however you can.” The result now sees Wednesday climb into the play-offs in the League One table, with the manager admitting the game was not as entertaining as he would have liked. He added: “I thought we started the game well, but as the game went on we became anxious. That was shown in the players and we had to get that out of our system. “Lewis Buxton has come up with a goal from a corner and that has helped us a lot. I thought especially in the second half his performance was good. “Even the best teams in the world have scrappy games where they come away with the win and at the end of the day we’ve climbed the table into the play-offs and we all want to be up that end of the league come the end of the season.”
Last Wednesday I parted company with a single £5 note in exchange for an very enjoyable night indeed. Who would have thought that the 2nd round of the Football League Trophy would produce a game that, for those that were there, will prove unforgettable? When I stop watching live football at Hillsborough I will have clocked up a four figure total of matches. I will only be able to recall a handful of those thousands and one of them will be our Northern Section tussle with Chesterfield. The Wednesday performance wasn’t great but seeing a last minute penalty saved, the rebound converted then 22 more dot shots culminating in a goalkeeper scoring the winner doesn’t happen often in a fan’s career, if ever. Great scenes. Fans of opposition teams may ridicule the excitement borne from such a competition but there is nothing wrong with enjoying a genuinely entertaining game played by two teams who want to play at Wembley this season. That to me is simple. However, two things confused me on the night. The insistence of a striker I have never heard of to prepare a goal celebration with the sole intention of winding up fans baffles me. Am I missing some long running beef he has with us? To be fair he scored two goals and played OK but I really can’t stand players of that ilk and I can spot them a mile off. Put simply, I think Craig Davies is a bit of wazzark. The other,
BUXTON UP FOR CHALLENGE LOCAL FOOTBALL www.swfc.co.uk
Owls’ versatile defender Lewis Buxton was delighted with his contribution in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Leyton Orient and is prepared to play at centre half in future when called upon. With Mark Beevers sidelined suffering from an ankle ligament
even more mind boggling thing that I witnessed was two men leaving the ground during a penalty shoot-out. Now I don’t use italics lightly but I felt the need on this occasion. Quite bizarre. I enjoy this time of year as the games come thick and fast. Speaking of which, it was great to see Jermaine Johnson back in the squad on Saturday. A bit of pace won’t go amiss in a team that, at times, were as competent as an ITV Digital salesman. Leyton Orient fans will feel very aggrieved that they went back down the M1 with nothing but I won’t lose any sleep over that. We are a demanding bunch of fans at Sheffield Wednesday and rightly so. We have been given more heartache than Gail Platt over the last 10 years so it’s no surprise that we tend to be a little impatient these days. Accordingly, it was good to hear Irvine say that if our players couldn’t handle these demands then they shouldn’t be playing for Sheffield Wednesday but worryingly, the reason most of them are is because Irvine signed them. Nevertheless, the vast majority of the players need to grow a pair and stand up to be counted. Finally, on Thursday I will be turning out for the Mercury Newspaper in the prestigious Sheffield Chamber of Commerce 5-a-side competition along with other connoisseurs of the game from Mercury Towers. If we do well you’ll no doubt read about it next week and if we don’t I might just leave it out. Either way, I can honestly say that no pre-planned moronic celebrations have been planned but to be honest, neither have goals. injury, Buxton stepped across from his usual right back slot to play in the middle and also became the unlikely match-winner as Wednesday climbed back into the top six. Speaking to swfc.co.uk, he said: “To go from right back to leftsided centre half, you see things a bit differently but the more I play there, the more I’ll get used to the position. “I’ve played there many times before and know that I can do a good job and I’m ready to step in again if the manager asks me to.” Leyton Orient proved tough opposition for the Owls, who climbed up to fifth in League 1 on Saturday, with Buxton’s second half header the only difference between the two sides at full time. He continued: “I was delighted to score but the most important thing was that we got three points. “I think we lifted our game in the second half and the goal came at a good time so soon after half time.”
