SHEFFIELD ANNOUNCES MULTI-MILLION SPORTS EVENTS PROGRAMME receive national and international television coverage – projecting Sheffield, its facilities and brand to millions across the globe. Some of the highlights of the programme include: • The high profile $172,000 English Open table tennis championships – one of only four major pro-tour events in the world featuring the sport’s leading players (EIS – Sheffield). • The World short track speed skating championship (The Motorpoint Arena). • The FINA World Diving Cup where British diving superstar Tom Daley is expected to compete (Ponds Forge). • The Yorkshire International Show Jumping event (The Motorpoint Arena). In addition, Sheffield will once again play host to the returning two-day Aviva Indoor UK Athletics trials and championships at EIS Sheffield; the Betfred World Snooker Championships at The Crucible Theatre and
the six-day BUCS (British Universities) Championships. Councillor Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a world class sporting programme and one that the city should be proud of. It gives us all a terrific boost going into 2011 and sets a benchmark of where we want to be as an International sporting destination of choice. “Sheffield people will have the chance to see the sporting best of the best alongside our very own Sheffield-based Olympians in the making. In addition, more than 500 local people – from young to old - will have the opportunity to volunteer to help the events programme provide a special ‘Sheffield welcome’ to competitors and officials. “Six of the events being staged are directly related to the fact that the Olympics are coming to London in 2012 – which shows how Sheffield is leading the rest of the country in taking advantage of the opportunities presented
by the Olympics. “The programme will provide £6m extra in the local economy, bringing a welcome boost to our local hotels and other businesses. What’s more, with the international media coverage we can expect this will be yet another opportunity to show Sheffield off right across the world.” Councillor Scriven added that the programme is testimony to the work of the council’s major Sports Event Unit, Activity Sheffield, Sheffield International Venues and partners Welcome to Yorkshire, UK Sport, Marketing Sheffield, Hospitality Sheffield and the city’s Universities. Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “2011 promises to be a bumper year for events and sport in Sheffield and Welcome to Yorkshire is delighted to get behind this to help show everyone what our county has to offer. “There are a huge variety of events in store which we support ranging from snooker and speed

skating to diving and fencing – all of which will help to further raise the profile of Sheffield and the great county of Yorkshire.” Steve Brailey, Chief Executive of Sheffield International Venues – the operators of the majority of the facilities being used for the programme – said: “The events will showcase our world class sporting facilities in Sheffield as well as our expertise in staging and delivering sport and events at elite and grassroots levels.” Sheffield Chamber of Commerce President Yuri Matischen said: “The
events programme is not only stunning in terms of range but vindication of the investment by the city in its sporting facilities, infrastructure and people over the last two decades. “Sport is a key economic plank of the local enterprise partnership. The events programme will help keep people in work and contribute to growing wealth across the city. The trick now is to ensure that 2011 and Olympic year are sustained and that we aim to ensure that 2013 can be maintained so that Sheffield continues as a leading world sports event destination.”

Sheffield Council this week unveiled a major sports event programme for next year which will provide a multimillion pound boost to the local economy and position the city as one of the key UK sporting destinations as the countdown to the 2012 London Olympics gathers pace. The line-up, one of the most impressive and diverse in any UK city outside of London and outlined in detail by city council leader Paul Scriven, features: • Eight world championships or world level events • Three European level championship events • Twenty national championships • Four mass participation events with more than 25,000 participants The value to the local economy has been estimated to be in excess of £6m – further recognition that the sport, leisure and tourism sectors are some of the keys to unlocking growth and wealth for the region. COPLEYʼS COLUMN We have now had the long awaited final of the X Factor, and I am pleased to see that my tip that the winner, made ten weeks ago, would certainly be Matt Cardle, has come to fruition. Matt has an outstanding vocal talent, and has prevailed, notwithstanding some criticism on social networking site Facebook There have been many postings criticising the standard of this year’s show, and I have to totally disagree. This has been by far the best ever year, and Wagner apart, we have seen some very talented artistes. Although Matt is guaranteed a money spinning recording contract, X Factor supremo, Simon Cowell is too shrewd not to offer management to Rebecca Ferguson and his own manufactured boy band One Direction. JLS did not win the X Factor, but that did not prevent them from having much success, and the same can be said for another runner up Ollie Murrs. The three popular reality shows, I’m a celebrity, X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing are proving to be a good betting opportunity, with bookies favourites Stacey Solomon. Matt Cardle already past the post and Mrs Billy Connolly, Pamela Stephenson, well on course for the last waltz in the other contest. Although gambling is one of my many vices, I have not dipped my toe in on this occasion. Two Dronfeldians have had
some media exposure this week. Jackie Toaduff, international entertainer with showbusiness partner Roy Howells, was the guest of Rony Robinson,on Radio Sheffield, discussing his forthcoming appearance on BBC four programme Come Clog Dancing and his best selling book ‘Coaldust to Stardust’ This is a fantastic read and can be obtained from Peak Publishers or on line from Amazon. I had to record the television show on Sky Plus as it unfortunately was shown at the same time as the X Factor final. It is to be repeated this Thursday night, and I must confess I really enjoyed the show. The other Dronfeldian in the spotlight is veteran rocker, Dave Berry, who’s hit song ‘Little Things’, recorded in 1965, features in the Andrex toilet rolls advertisement. (no unwarranted comments please) Dave has had a fantastic career spanning fifty years and continues to tour on a regular basis. Whilst he readily admits to not being the best singer on the planet, I have to say there is nothing about stagecraft that Dave doesn’t know. He is a superb entertainer and will never retire. At the time of writing, Sheffield United manager, Gary Speed is being strongly tipped to become the next manager of Wales, following the retirement of John Toshack I do not understand this as nice a guy as Speed is, he is still a novice as a football manager and has

hardly been a raging success at Bramall Lane. Obviously the main qualification for the job is to be Welsh The Blades loss to Barnsley on Saturday has put them dangerously near the relegation places. The Owls on the other hand gave new owner, Milan Mandaric a treat, watching his first home match by thrashing Bristol Rovers a severe thrashing by six goals to two, shooting them up to an automatic promotion place. Surely, the two Sheffield clubs are not going to swap over divisions, thus depriving us of the local derbies next season. Regular readers will be surprised to learn that I do not want this to happen, and my fervent wish is for both clubs to return to the premiership. An article caught my eye in the paper on Sunday about the son of convicted American fraudster Bernie Madoff apparently committing suicide, presumably because he was under investigation for being involved in his father’s business where over forty billion pounds was defrauded from investors. The amazing thing about this story is the fact that Bernie Madoff, despite being seventy two years of age, received a custodial sentence of no less than one hundred and fifty years. He is obviously going to serve a fraction of that sentence, with death giving him a chance to finally defraud the legal system. Surely, a more sensible sentence would have been twenty seven years, thereby giving him the opportunity to celebrate his centenary birthday at liberty. This could only happen in America.

were thrown into fierce mosh-pitting and headache-worthy head banging, although, somehow, The View don’t really reflect that of thrashy metal. But hey, you can’t blame eager students for being a little over excited! Belting out crowd favourites ‘Shock Horror’ and ending with ‘Same Jeans’ the tune which, arguably, saw them rocket onto a national level, frontman Kyle Falconer’s distinct vocals made sure an imprint of the night was to stay with the audience for a long while…well at least until Carl Barrat makes his DJ appearance next week!
At last, after the non-stop stream of second rate rock tribute bands seeming to engulf Sheffield’s gig circuit the past few months, the city was thrown a glimmer of hope with The View gracing Sheffield Union’s stage last Thursday. And about time it was too! The weekly event, Live Wire ran by the University, has played host to the likes of Example and I Blame Coco, however this week was the turn of the Scottish Indie rockers. However, the night was still young and rapidly increasing numbers to see The View made sure the atmosphere in Fusion and Foundry was electric. Entering on stage to a packed venue must be pretty daunting, however this didn’t seem to play effect on The View, who from the start of their set were clearly full of enthusiasm and passion to be back on tour. Describing their late 2010 tour as a way of intimately promoting their third album, although still currently untitled, the long haired five piece proved they still have what it takes to put on a cracking live show. FAIRYTALE IN THE ACADEMY Legendary Irish band the Pogues jig their way into Sheffield on Thursday night as part of their seven date Farewell Christmas Tour. With their distinct celtic punk style the Pogues have attracted and retained a large and loyal following since their formation in 1982, which guarantees a boisterous atmosphere particularly given the time of year. If you can’t have ‘the craic’ with Shane MacGowan and the boys at one of their sing alongs then you may have to travel some distance in search of your preferred brand of enjoyment. The intimate confines of the O2 Academy are sure to provide a great backdrop for complete strangers to link arms to the sounds of classics such as ‘If I Should Fall From Grace With God’ and some would argue the greatest ever Christmas song ‘Fairytale of New York’. The 8 piece band have made no secret of the fact that they have no desire to write further material and although they will still be seen from time to time on the festival circuit this is their last Christmas tour and so the only thing for it as it were is to enjoy the gig and drink it while it’s fizzy. Shane MacGowan will certainly be doing just that. The Pogues are embarking on their farewell Christmas tour. The Pogues December shows have been synonymous with Christmas since they started eight years ago. As much a part of Christmas as turkey and stuffing; The Pogues reunite once again for an ultimate seasonal send off. Only a Pogues gig can create the party atmosphere of St. Patrick’s Day in December with their unique mix of traditional Irish folk, punk and classic songwriting. Having just completed their first headline UK and European tour, Sparrow and the Workshop are ecstatic that they will be joining The Pogues on their Christmas shows. The band are big fans of The Pogues and can’t wait to join them on tour. Jill: “My folks and I moved to Chicago from Ireland when I was small and they listened to the Pogues religiously. They saw them play whenever they came into town and sang along to them at parties and in pubs. The Pogues were important for us, for my folks to feel connected to the place they left behind and for me to know more about my own cultural heritage. When we were offered the support tour I was shocked and delighted. I’ll probably faint when I meet the band. I’ve never really been star-struck but, yeah, I’ll faint for sure.” Sparrow and the Workshop released the single “Black to Red” on November 1st through Distiller Records, and it gained great radio support, including winning Steve Lamacq’s ‘Rebel Playlist’ on BBC 6Music. The track was recorded by Tim Rowkins and mixed by Richard Jackson. It was the first new song to be released since their critically acclaimed album, “Crystals Fall” - the band are currently working on their follow-up album, which is due to be released early next year. Last year’s internet based campaign to stop the X Factor winner gaining the Christmas Number 1 was an astounding success. Rage against the Machine’s ‘Killing in the Name’ bullied wee Joe McElderry into second place and an army of music lovers rejoiced. Of course the campaign was never aimed at the diminutive geordie, nor is this year’s attempt an attack on lovely old Matt Cardle, the target has always been the self professed messiah of pop Mr. Simon Cowell. I don’t know in reality how much Simon cares to be honest, he may have suffered a little dent to his pride but to be honest he’ll probably patch it up using a roll of £50 notes as bodyfiller. This year’s industry backed Trojan horse is John Cage’s 4’33” under the guise of ‘Cage against the Machine’ (see what they done there?). In essence it is 4 minutes and 33 seconds of general background noise, Wikipedia states “the content of the composition is meant to be perceived as the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed” in reality it’s just silence. The poetic imagery of what this release is trying to achieve is immeasurable, there is a case that listening to silence is far better than listening to any X Factor output and if it did beat Mr. Cardle to number one Simon Cowell would have little comeback after having the culmination of his 2010 being rogered by 5 minutes of ambience, I myself have a couple of issues with this however. One, last year’s campaign anthem was a contemporary classic, already revered by many and a true anarchists anthem. KITN perfectly summed up the aims of it’s supporters and the final 2 minutes of “F**K YOU I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME” couldn’t have been more apt at highlighting the protest against Simon Cowell’s dictation of the music industry. 4’33” states quite a lot on a higher level of thinking but most people, including myself cannot be bothered to put so much mental effort into a Christmas Number One. Two, Matt Cardle is quite likeable, he’s a musician, he’s been grafting for year’s on the local circuit, he’s got a decent voice and the song he has chosen is a decent tune. I’m sure Biffy Clyro fans aren’t too pleased but i’m sure the boys from Scotland will be adequately compensated for a slight loss of credibility. In conclusion, Cage against the Machine, I know what you’re saying but I literally can’t hear it.
experimentations lead to the conception of The Trashmen’s Surfin’ Bird, and what heavy sessions they must have been! Another release that’s being pitted against Matt Cardle, this actually seems to have more of a chance of succeeding. The song is actually a combination of two R&B hits by The Rivingtons, “The Bird’s the Word” and “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow”, so in fact this was probably one of the world’s first mash-ups! Musically mental, lyrically insane and generally off the wall Surfin’ Bird is of course more cult classic than musical masterpiece, but how many of the world’s most iconic releases over history are technically awesome (see most punk) or make any actual sense (see Bohemian Rhapsody, et al). Famously finding a second wind after featuring in a 2008 episode of Family Guy (if you’ve not seen it please make the effort) Surfin’ Bird is attacking the Christmas Number One from a completely opposite angle compared to 4’33”, and if you are wishing to make a stand against X Factor this year all you have to do is decide from which angle you wish to attack. If you’d like to make a high-brow, culturally satirical comment on today’s social environnment then please purchase 4’33”, however if you wish to see a ridiculous, catchy, insane, brain mashing, cyclone slap Xmas 2010 round the face then the Bird is definitley the word.
artist: basement jaxx Single: dracula release date: out now The Brixton duo has been quiet of late. After headling Glastonbury a few years back they been operating reletively under the popular radar. 2009 album ‘Scars’ wasn’t the success that previous releases have been and a few single releases on their own Atlantic Jaxx label have being club successes recently. Even last week’s release of ‘Dracula’ passed me by until I went on a mission to source what music was being used on the new advertising campaign fo Audi’s A7 and I almost fell off my swivel chair when I found out it was Basement Jaxx. Sounding more like Marilyn Manson smashed into an industrial drum machine, this dark, brooding stomper will suprise regular fans of the Jaxx but may win them a few more. Maybe they are personally frustrated with the current drought of commercial success and if so it definately comes through in this track, i can’t see it making the Hallam Fm playlist but my god it’s an absolute belter.

SEX, DOCKS AND ROCK Nʼ ROLL Red Ladder Theatre and Chumbawamba present the musical comedy that is Sex, Docks n Rock n’ Roll
After the rip-roaring success of Chumbawumba and Red Ladder’s visit to The Civic they are back. It’s 1960 and the Liverpool seafarers and dockworkers are on strike. Uncle Paddy, leader of the Seamen’s Reform Movement, is in jail, while cousin Ronnie, dad of the McDermott family, sits in his pants all day reading the Daily Worker and watching Z-Cars as his harried wife Jean tries to keep the household together (sneaking the occasional peak at a well-fingered copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover). A family comedy about love, music and the power of a good cup of tea, featuring live music (with a bath-tub bass!), Sex, Docks and Rock ‘n’ Rollpromises to keep your rabble entertained this Christmas. Chakras Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means “wheel” or “disc.” Chakras are our energy centres. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our body. They are associated with our physical, mental and emotional interactions and are sometimes called the gate way to the soul. The most well known system is that of the seven chakras, although we actually have twenty one. For this article I will be concentrating on the seven major ones. A psychic will see your chakra as you enter the room for a psychic reading. She will scan both your aura and chakra in order to gain an insight into your well being and emotions. The chakras radiate colour (just like the aura) starting at the top of your head. A lay person cannot open and close chakras, however, the system can be learnt if you have some psychic awareness.

The Chakra System - How I open my Chakra I imagine a climbing rose at the bottom of my spine. I imagine it climbing and sprouting coloured petals (the colour of the petals will relate to the chakra colour). I name my chakra roses as when a relative has passed over I will plant a rose in their memory.

IN SMACKEEʼS TRIUMPHANT RETURN CHRISTMAS YORKSHIRE There wasn’t a spare seat in the house last Friday when Smackee returned to Crookes with a Christmas Special Show. Following on from their return to Clubland in May after an absence of many years, Barry and the Gang were looking forward to the night, and they didn’t disappoint the legion of returning fans, many of whom had booked their tickets six months in advance!
The format was much the same as expected – Barry ripped through a series of numbers, ably backed by Rob Mackenzie on guitar, with Darren Porter on keyboards, before introducing firstly his wife Dawn, and secondly Laura Hobbs, for a series of musical treats – individually, and as various combinations of duos and trios – but the end result was the same – classic songs, superb vocals and great arrangements. A first set of an hour was followed by a second set which ran to almost an hour and a half, as the crowd simply refused to let them leave the stage, demanding encore after encore. Quite simply, it was all we expected and more; a classic act from the vintage Clubland
era, back where they belong in a packed concert room. Nights like this may seem unusual to the new generation of clubgoers, but it was a common scene in the not too distant past, and it goes to prove that in these difficult times, the local club or pub can still provide tremendous entertainment at an affordable price. What of Smackee? Talking to Barry afterwards, he is keen to return in 2011, and has promised us yet another different show! Watch the Mercury for details of dates and venue as they become available – but book early!
“Nowhere are the traditions of Christmas kept up with such splendour as in Yorkshire.” That’s what the American author and traveller Washington Irving wrote after visiting the county 1812. To find out if it is still true today, Mike Harding sets out in a new DVD to explore the ways in which a traditional Christmas is still celebrated across the three Ridings. In the snow-covered Dales he joins Hawes Silver Prize Band and East Witton Male Voice Choir for their Yorkshire version of While Shepherds Watched, while Leyburn Ladies Choir offer their uniquely local Wensleydale Carol. In the Vale of York he watches Knaresborough Mummers take theuir annual Christmas tour to the village of Crayke, near Easingworld. There’s more special seasonal music from the Bridlington Fiddler, Jim Eldon, with the East Riding setting of Unto Us a Child is Born, and from renowned traditional acapella trio, Coope, Boyes and Simpson, with another Yorkshire Christmas song, this one peculiar to the Sheffield area, Three Jolly Miners. great friend to the Mercury, and who recently won Chesterfield’s In pursuit of further Yorkshire “Search for a Star” competition, often turns out in support of our Christmas traditions, Mike joins the and made his debut at the charity events. THE MERCURY UNPLUGS
A different kind of night - a new venue – and some new faces. Our “Unplugged” evening at Killamarsh Leisure Centre offered a whole new experience. Firstly the venue; situated in the middle of Killamarsh village, the centre offers a superb room with its own bar, comfortable furnishings, and ample room for up to 150 people, and yet it created a warm and intimate atmosphere which was perfectly suited to the event. The line up was carefully chosen; acoustic evenings demand artists with a high level of musical skill; there is no electronic trickery or pre-recorded backing to hide behind. Despite the awful weather and road conditions, a sizeable crowd made it to the gig. First up was Kirk McElhinney; Kirk is a Lancashire lad who was making his first appearance in Sheffield, playing a selection of his own songs together with classics such as “Eleanor Rigby” with his own unique arrangements. Kirk is an extremely talented guitarist, with his roots firmly in contemporary folk – he numbers John Martyn and the great Bert Jansch amongst his heroes. The audience quickly appreciated his talent and after some fantastic guitar playing he left the stage to loud applause. Next onstage we were treated to another relative newcomer, Nathan Lee Downes,

MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas
Only last week I was fretting about the sudden arrival of Christmas. The full horror dawned on me just this last weekend when my girlfriend came home from work and proclaimed she’d completed all her shopping. I’m still yet to write a single card, let alone brave the shops. One thing we have managed to do at home though is to drag the Christmas tree down from the loft, which does beg the age old question, “Real or artificial, which is best?” As I reported on the Breakfast Show the other day, your choice of any Christmas decoration does actually say a lot about your character. If you go for coloured lights, for example, you’re an extrovert according to the Readers Digest survey, which also gives one or two new ideas for home made bits and bobs. One of those is to re-use old bottles and vases. Half fill with water and add a little food colouring before leaving dotted around the home on vacant window sills and shelves. Alternatively you could just throw a house party, do away with the clearing up and leave the half drank remains on show I suppose. Don’t forget this Friday we are inviting you to party with Magic and Queen tribute band “Mercury”. Friday night’s concert takes place at the legendary Crookes Club and tickets are still available, as you’ll see here in the paper. Plus if you’re a Magic VIP, you are eligible for a free first drink. Just show your membership card when you turn up. Don’t forget you can also win a FREE digital radio each day up to Christmas. Listen at 8.15am for the “12 Days of Christmas” winning song and then call us when you hear it again later in the day. If you’re on lucky line 12, you win! See you in the morning, Trevor

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS COMMENCE AT MINNIES AFTER MASSIVE REFURBISHMENT The Rose & Crown at Stannington, better known to the locals as Minnies, has undergone a remarkable and attractive transformation in recent weeks with a huge refurbishment. Mine Host Angie Burns says the enlarged and separate Dining Room can now accommodate sixty customers in comfort and doubles as a function room. Now open for meals, from the New Year it will also be available for private hire. Angie has also engaged a resident DJ and photographer and of course, Minnies can provide all the catering. Families are most welcome and there is a patio and play area with extensive views across the Loxley Valley to Dam Flask. Angie has a 15 year career at the Rose & Crown, starting there back in 1995 as the chef responsible for launching the dining facilities before becoming manager in 1998. Bass sold the pub in 2001 and Angie acquired the lease. Her cook, Kath, has been there for 12 years cooking daytime meals while Angie has recently returned to the kitchen to cook for evening and weekend customers. This expansion of catering has led to Nikki Booth being recently appointed as assistant manager to run the pub. Meanwhile Angie has returned to the Sizzling Platters menu which Minnies was formerly renowned for. Steaks start from just £4.99 for a 5ounce rump steak, up to an 8 ounce English rib-eye steak for only £9:99. Minnie’s Classics include Cod and chips cooked in a local beer batter and served with “proper” chips and peas. Also available are Lasagne, Scampi, Curry and the Pie of the Day. The Kidz Meals menu presents all meals for just £3.99 and of course there are daily specials and desserts.
A Proper Local
The refurbishment has included the Bar, and Angie is keen to emphasise that the Rose & Crown remains a proper local. There are two over-35 football teams, Stannington Village Old Boys and Stannington Athletic FC, along with the Crown Green Bowling club being based at the pub. Customers are free to bring their dogs into the Tap Room and registered guide dogs are welcome to accompany their owners in the Lounge. There is a pool area so separate it could be named a Pool Snug while the Bar includes a big screen TV with Sky Sports Monday Nights are Poker Nights and all players are welcome, Wednesday’s are Biker Nights for the Trial Bikers while Thursday and Sunday Nights are both Quiz Nights at 9:30 with beer and cash prizes. Moving with the times you can facebook the pub at: rose&crown(minnies) and the New Year will see in their website with wi-fi. On Christmas Eve don’t miss the “Families in the Lounge” event with Tricky Trevs’ Disco and Karaoke. It starts at 7:00 pm and includes Party Games.
The Rose & Crown A History
The structure of the old ROSE & CROWN would have indicated that it was built for a private residence but there are no records available to confirm this or to say when the sale of beer first took place. However it was a free house up until June 1918. Up to that date the owners for a considerable number of years were the Wild family and they sold out to Tomlinson’s Anchor Brewery. During the year 1920 Mr & Mrs Irvine Lee took over the tenancy and after Mr Lee died in 1953, Mrs Minnie Lee carried on as tenant for a number of years until just before the building was altered. Mrs Lee could claim a lifetime’s connection with the Rose & Crown as she can remember as a girl standing on a box to wash glasses whilst the Wild’s were tenants. Whilst she was Licensee she had a wonderful understanding with the customers. One outstanding feature showing this, was that instead of walking backwards and forwards for change from the tap room she always had a jar filled with cash, sometimes up to £4 or £5, and this was left unattended on a table. Not once was there any suspicion of money being taken, a tribute to the customer’s of that day.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally
Hello Everyone Charity I hope you have all managed to stay fit and well during the unseasonably snowy weather and not had any mishaps. The snow looks so beautiful when it arrives but it really does outstay its welcome doesn’t it! As many of you will realise Jane and I take it in turns to edit the page. When my copy last came out it was the Wednesday when almost nothing moved in Sheffield and I know some people wouldn’t have got out for their copy, which is why I have mentioned briefly three items again. This will be my last page this year so I would like to wish everyone all the best for Christmas and New Year. See you in 2011. Hilary Taylor-Firth.
Age UK’s ‘Call in Time’ telephone befriending service Not having someone to talk to regularly can be very lonely and isolating and a friendly chat on the phone can make all the difference. The ‘Call in Time’ service is primarily for people over 60, who would benefit from the additional support a telephone friendship could provide. The service has two forms, ‘Friendship Calls’ and ‘Good Day Calls’. A Friendship Call is a weekly phone call (lasting normally about 20 minutes) from a trained and supported volunteer. A Good Day Call is a short call several times a week, at a time that suits you best, for an initial period of 8 weeks. This can provide some reassurance when you most need it. To date, the service has supported over 500 people in a variety of different situations. Age UK has received lots of positive feedback from those who have used the service about the benefits it brings to them. ‘It’s just knowing that there’s somebody there who cares’ says Mary, 82. All ‘Call in Time’ calls are free to the people, who receive them and delivered Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 5.00pm. If you or someone you know is:

FREE LEGAL ADVICE SESSIONS A BIG SUCCESS Free legal advice sessions, held at a number of community locations in Sheffield and Rotherham, have been heralded a big success by members of the public as well as the providers of the scheme. The advice sessions, provided by solicitors from Sheffield and Rotherham based law firm Norrie Waite & Slater, were started earlier this year in a bid to take legal advice out into the community and reach members of the public who may not otherwise gain access to it. The sessions are held at locations such as libraries, housing offices and citizen’s advice bureaus throughout South Yorkshire. The public response has in some cases been overwhelming, with high numbers of people attending the sessions to obtain legal advice. At each session two solicitors attend and offer advice on legal issues ranging from family matters, wills and probate, criminal issues, housing and motoring offences. “People who attend these free sessions often have genuine, pressing legal issues which need to be dealt with”, says Simon Goodlad of Norrie Waite & Slater. “For whatever reason we find that some people are reluctant to approach a firm of solicitors directly, but by taking the advice sessions out into the community it seems to break down that barrier and make people more likely to get the advice they need.” People who attend the sessions are given free advice on the day on any legal matter. But what if someone needs more than 15 minutes of free advice? “We find that many matters can be dealt with on the day. In some cases people require further legal representation such as for a divorce, a criminal matter or a potential accident claim and they want to know where they stand or to ask how the process works”, says Simon “in many areas of law we can offer legal aid to cover ongoing legal costs.” The sessions are usually held over an afternoon and are carried out on a turn up and wait basis with no appointment required. Due to the success of these advice sessions, Norrie Waite & Slater are on the lookout for additional venues for future sessions. If you are able to offer a venue that you think may be suitable please contact Simon Goodlad on 0114 2766166. The next sessions to be held are: Crystal Peaks library Monday 10th January 2pm to 5pm Rotherham Citizens Advice bureau – (Wellgate Rotherham) Thursday 13th January 2pm to 5pm Both of these venues are usually very busy at 2pm, come later to avoid a long wait.

MAKE XMAS A SAFE TIME FOR PETS
With the festive season in full swing, leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is urging pet owners to ‘paws’ for thought and consider the safety and wellbeing of their four-legged friends this Christmas. The combination of decorations and seasonal food can pose a real danger for curious cats and prying pooches. PDSA sees hundreds of animals each year who become ill or are accidentally injured as a direct result of the festive season. The main causes of animals being seen by vets over Christmas include them swallowing foreign objects (such as turkey bones, tinsel and baubles), poisoning – often caused by eating chocolate or raisins, and electrocution (chewing through Christmas tree light cables). PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley advises: “At this time of year it’s a good idea to identify and remove any possible pet hazards in the home. That way the whole family – including the four-legged members – can enjoy the festive season safely.” To help pet owners, PDSA has produced a series of festive tips to ensure pets stay safe this Christmas. 1. Keep turkey bones away from dogs and cats. If eaten these can penetrate the intestine and kill your pet. Wrap any leftover food and put it in a safe lidded container. 2. If shopping for pet presents, make sure your gift is suitable for the species and breed. Toys that encourage exercise are a great Christmas gift idea, but make sure they can’t be swallowed or obstruct a pet’s windpipe. Over-indulging pets with treats can cause vomiting and diarrhoea – never very pleasant, and least of all over Christmas - so if you can’t resist giving some treats, go for healthy options such as small pieces of lean meat. 3. Don’t forget to walk your dog over the festive period. However, ensure any walk is taken more than an hour after your dog’s last meal because vigorous exercise straight after a meal can cause a gastric torsion – a very dangerous and sometimes fatal twisting of a dog’s stomach. This is especially important for large and giant breed dogs, as they are particularly susceptible to this condition. 4. If travelling over the Christmas period, ensure that your dog is microchipped and is wearing a collar and identification tag. Away from home, your dog may become disorientated and wander off. A microchipped pet is much more likely to be reunited with its owner. 5. Hide your advent calendars! Human chocolate can be poisonous to pets, with plain chocolate being the most toxic. Chocolate poisoning can be fatal, so keep all chocolate well out of reach. 6. Decorations, small toys and batteries could be dangerous to pets if they are swallowed, and some household items such as babies’ dummies and sewing needles can also pose a hazard. Think of a pet as a curious toddler, and clear items away as you would for a young child. 7. Be drink aware. PDSA vets advise owners not to leave any glasses within easy reach of their pets. A broken glass can seriously injure your pet. If the glass contains alcohol there is also the added danger your pet might lap up the contents. Pets can die from alcohol ingestion. 8 Ensure you will be able to afford any unexpected vets’ bills this Christmas by purchasing a pet insurance policy. Pet insurance allows you to make regular affordable contributions to cover veterinary fees which could be incurred if your pet became sick or injured. 9. Buckle up – if travelling by car with your pet make sure they are secure. Pets that aren’t buckled up properly could cause an accident and injure both themselves and others. Pet seat-belts or harnesses are available for medium or larger dogs. For smaller pets, including cats and small furry animals, use a well ventilated pet carrier that is securely attached or wedged in the footwell to keep them safe. 10. In case of emergency keep the name, address and number of your vet by the phone and stored in your mobile. Pets are susceptible to accident and injury at any time and Christmas is no different, so make sure you have these important details to hand.

by Clint Walker
Ambitious plans have been revealed designed to make angling the most accessible participant sport in the United Kingdom. Previous experience in marketing, public relations and event organisation has put Cudmore Fisheries supremo Cyril Brewster firmly in the frame to spearhead possibly the biggest angling project ever undertaken in recent years. Cyril today unveiled his three phase strategy designed to draw all facets of the fishing world into one single syndicate which will strive towards making angling available to all. Charities, manufacturers, and the angling media have all been invited to attend the first meeting in January to create the new steering group intending to move the venture forwards and firmly establish both the direction and mission statement for the future The initial phase concentrates on the continued expansion of the National School of Angling (NSA). Currently based at Cudmore Fisheries, the Staffordshire site will provide the self sustaining, pioneering template to support an initial introduction to the sport, instruction and angler development, before the ‘system’ expands to similarly qualified sites across the UK. The NSA provides fully competent coaching staff, all equipment, and is a partner of the ‘Get Hooked on Fishing’ charitable organisation which works with young people within the community. Continued sponsorship from some of the country’s biggest manufacturers will ensure that the school offers a superb arena for the latest innovations, ideas and techniques designed to help the modern day angler. A comprehensive calendar of events for the school will be launched this April The newly formulated group will then look into the feasibility of creating the largest ever fishing event, a new National Angling show combining exhibitions and demonstrations to showcase angling across a
much wider forum. Held at a major venue, the show experience is to be completely revised to afford a fantastic platform to encourage trade, retail, media and public interaction. The conclusion and eventual objective, will take shape in the proposed National Angling Centre. Cyril is already looking for a suitable site to develop a ‘centre for excellence’ with over one thousand fishable pegs; more than enough to hold the World Championships.... By securing appropriate funding, the Centre becomes reality and each member of the consortium becomes a shareholder in the future of fishing. The intention is to support every aspect of angling, from ‘grassroots’ through to major international competition and beyond. The potential for media exposure is unlimited, the prospective trade implications limitless, and the benefit to angling immeasurable. Cyril could not have got this far without the support of the ‘Get Hooked’ team, the angling trade, media team and others, and would like to pass on his continued appreciation. Within this group, Cyril states he intends to put together the finest team ever assembled. Consisting of the finest anglers, manufacturers, suppliers, pacesetters, and business brains in the UK, he is confident that the group will mould the very future of angling and facilitate huge interest in the sport. Any member of the trade that has not been contact and would like to be invited to attend the inaugural meeting on January 25th 2011 please contact .Cyril Brewster at cyril@thebrewstercompany.com Tight Lines, Clint

ASCOT HOPING FOR A FROST FREE WEEK HORSE RACING by Timelord
This coming weekend’s big fixture is at Ascot on Friday and Saturday but the meeting is already under threat from the weather. The forecast is for sharp overnight frosts with a possibility of snow on Thursday. Although they have covered the track the precautions may not be sufficient if the frosts are really penetrating and/or the covers get a snowfall on top of them. All we can do is hope that the forecasters have got it wrong – it wouldn’t be the first time! With a poor weather forecast and quite a dearth of decent racing elsewhere I have mainly concentrated on Ascot this week and have made suggestions for all their races on Friday and Saturday. I have also looked at the three televised races from Haydock on Saturday in case that meeting gets the green light. If the Ascot meeting survives then Friday has a couple of Grade 2 races and Saturday features the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle for stayers over Ascot’s stiffish 3 miles. No doubt Big Buck’s will again be all the rage for this race but at the likely skinny odds that will be on offer if he runs he still represents no real value against these opponents, anyone of whom on their day could give him a real race. No horse is unbeatable (Zenyatta proved that in the Breeders Cup recently and although pilot error was probably to blame there excuses still don’t count when you are trying to collect!). I went for Duc De Regniere to overturn Big Buck’s at Newbury recently, where he finished runner-up, and I still fancy him to have a decent chance here. Another one that is in with a good chance is Carole’s Legacy. Both are trained by a certain N J Henderson who may

well have set his sights on this race. It is true that Big Buck’s gave the others 8lb at Newbury (and beat them)and goes off level weights here, so that is in his favour, but Carole’s Legacy wasn’t in the Newbury race and gets 7lb off the favourite here. However I simply cannot see any value in backing Big Buck’s, even though he is the most likely winner, so I recommend that, unless you want to “chance your arm” on the favourite being overturned, you watch the race with no money down. If you are going to bet the recommendation is to pick one of Henderson’s runners each way.

DEPLETED STEELERS PUT OUT BLAZE ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle
Steelers players and fans made the long trip back from Cardiff on Saturday fuming with anger after bad refereeing decisions and bad sportsmanship from the Devils left three Steelers players injured. Joey Talbot, Steve Munn and Neil Clark all suffered injuries during Saturday’s game, with Munn receiving a concussion following a hit by Brad Voth, Clark also being injured by “Big Bad Brad”, and Talbot picking his concussion up after a hit from Max Birbraer. Voth, who has seriously injured at least one player every season that he has played in the UK, including Steelers’ Stefan Sjogren who did not pick up a hockey stick again, “blind-sided” Munn, and performed what many thought was a check to the head on Neil Clark, leaving the player severely dazed. At the end of the day the Devils picked up a 3-2 victory, with goals from Michel, Voth (prior to him being ejected from the game on a Game Misconduct penalty just 1:44 later) and Matzka. On Sunday the Steelers took to the ice five players down, and still managed to come out on top over the Coventry Blaze. Captain Jonathan Phillips and Jeff Legue are still out with long-term injuries, and Saturday’s game left Joey Talbot and Steve Munn sitting out Sunday’s game with concussions. However, Coventry were also missing men, as they were without Head Coach Paul Thompson who was still banned after his side’s bench-clearance against the Nottingham Panthers last week, as Luc Chabot ran the bench. Blaze were also without ex-Steeler Brad Cruikshank who picked up a 9-game ban after altercations in the bench clearance, and Captain Jonathan Weaver and Matt Soderstrom who were both out due to injuries. Aaron Nell returned to the line-up after missing the team’s game in Hull the night before. The Blaze scored first, with a goal at 9:47 in the first period, however that was quickly answered, 12 seconds later in fact, by Steelers’ Neil Clark, who played through injury. It was Clark again who put the Steelers ahead with his second of the night at 37:52, and play remained even until 55:12 when Russell Cowley pulled one back for the Blaze. It wasn’t going to be their night, however, as Ashley Tait put the Steelers back in the lead at 55:52. Despite pulling their netminder for an extra out-skater the Blaze couldn’t find any further goals, and left on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline. The Steelers now have no more games before Christmas, after the games which should have been played have been rearranged. Their next game is now the massive Boxing Day clash against the Nottingham Panthers.
LE FONDRE SHOOTS THE SHOT MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United extended their unbeaten league run to five games after a well deserved 1-0 victory over Aldershot Town. Once again Adam Le Fondre was on the scoresheet, netting just before half time after great work from Marcus Marshall down the right to seal the win and move the Millers to within touching distance of the automatic promotion places. Ronnie Moore handed a debut to loanee Will Atkinson along with four other changes.Andy Warrington, Tom Newey and Jason Taylor returned alongside skipper Ryan Cresswell, with Kevin Ellison, Jamie Annerson and Mark Bradley dropping to the bench, with Danny Coid missing out through injury. The visitors had the first effort of the game after five minutes and forced an excellent save from Warrington.Confusion at the back allowed Anthony Straker to capitalise and work the ball to Ben Herd, who fed Ben Harding. Harding sailed past Jason Taylor’s challenge and curled a left-footed shot towards the top corner, only to see Warrington tip wide at full-stretch. The Millers responded well and came close through Johnny Mullins four minutes later. The right back intercepted a pass inside his own half and fed Marshall.Mullins continued his run into the penalty area, but couldn’t control his header and failed to test Jamie Young. The game went through a scrappy spell with few chances for either side, until Marvin Morgan found space inside the penalty area but failed to test Warrington from 12

yards. Rotherham then responded with an effort of their own. Le Fondre pulled into the right wing position and delivered a low cross to Ryan Taylor. With his back to goal, he did well to turn and create space to shoot, but his effort flew harmlessly over. With the Millers looking to press home their advantage, Aldershot missed a glorious chance to take the lead after a quick counter attack.Herd and Morgan linked up down the right, and Herd’s run into the penalty area was halted by Atkinson, leaving referee Mr. Sutton with no choice but to point to the spot.Wade Small stepped forward, sent Warrington the wrong way, but saw his wellstruck spot kick rebound to safety off the inside of the post. Five minutes before half time the Millers took the lead.Atkinson cut in from the left wing and passed square to Mullins, who immediately fed Marshall. He carried the ball to the byline and played a superb cross across the face of the goal for Le Fondre to smash home at the far post.It was the best move of the match and gave the Millers the lead heading into the break. At the start of the second half a foul by Jason Taylor brought a free kick to the visitors 25 yards from goal. Harding struck the ball left footed low to Warrington’s right but the Millers number one saved well, and the Millers eventually scrambled the ball safety. On 52 minutes a cross by Law from the right was powerfully headed towards goal by Nick Fenton but Young tipped over at full stretch. From the resulting corner Young was called into action again saving well from a shot by Cresswell 12 yards out. The Millers continued to up the tempo. This time good work by Marshall resulted in a pass inside
to Le Fondre but League Two’s leading marksman this time scooped the ball over the bar. The Millers were dealt a huge blow on 66 minutes when, after an awkward fall, the returning skipper Cresswell was stretchered off to be replaced by Luke Ashworth. With 15 minutes remaining Aldershot started to push for an equaliser. A deflected cross by Morgan looked likely to end with an easy tap-in at the back post, but Mullins headed away brilliantly in the nick of time. On 78 minutes the Millers almost had the game sewn up. A flick on by Le Fondre almost had Ryan Taylor through on goal but Young got to the ball first. After doing the hard part he then fumbled the ball in front of him before lashing it straight at Le Fondre with the ball rebounding just wide of the post. Aldershot were forced to play the last five minutes with 10 men after Jamie Vincent upended Marshall on the edge of the box and the Shots’ left back was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Late on Ryan Taylor ran through on the angle but his low shot was saved by the legs of Young. Rotherham United: Warrington; Mullins, Cresswell (Ashworth 67), Fenton, Newey, Marshall, Law, J. BLADES EDGED OUT AT BARNSLEY BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
United’s dominance over Barnsley at Oakwell in recent years was not evident in Saturday’s fixture. Hugo Colace’s first half goal gave Barnsley their first home victory over the Blades for over 11 years. United’s team for the derby showed five changes and included a debut for goalkeeper Wright. There were recalls for Ertl, Calve, Taylor and Yeates. Missing out from the Bristol City game were Simonsen, Lowton and Quinn, who were all on the bench; Cresswell, who serves a ban; and the injured Jordan. Ward was deemed fit enough to be amongst the substitutes. The formation displayed the Irish duo of Reid and Yeates supporting Welshman Evans in attack, with Ertl, Britton and Montgomery patrolling the midfield. Of course, Calve and Taylor took over the full-back roles. The opening ten minutes were tight with little to choose between the teams, although United will have been encouraged by winning an early corner and a free-kick in a dangerous position. For the home side, Hammill clipped a set-piece over the crossbar. On 12 minutes a short corner routine between Reid and Yeates resulted in the latter testing the handling skills of Steele, whilst a powerful half-volley from Doyle was blocked by Bartley as the teams continued to battle for supremecy. Taylor fired wide with a first-time effort from a short Reid free-kick on 22 minutes and then Evans drilled over but did well to sneak beyond Trippier and Colace. O’Brien’s long-ranger was well over the crossbar as Barnsley attempted to hit back, whilst Hammill was denied a penalty when he went over as he was shepherded away from goal by Nosworthy. Barnsley’s Trippier was the first to be booked on 31 minutes when, not for the first time, he illegally stopped Yeates, who was looking impressive. United were starting to show signs of getting on top before being hit with a disappointing blow on 37 minutes. O’Brien found room to smash a cross from the right and COLACE was ideallyplaced to direct the ball past an exposed Wright. Within three minutes the Blades almost found a leveller. From Taylor’s throw, Yeates allowed the ball to travel across his body before striking a half-volley which had Steele beaten but came back off the crossbar. Before the break, Hammill cut in from the left-wing and forced a save from Wright and goalscorer Colace was the second into the book before the half-time whistle for a foul on Ertl. O’Connor was booked for dissent early in the second half - despite him winning a free-kick - and Shackell was unable to get on the end of an O’Connor cross as Barnsley looked to extended their lead. There were more worries for United when goalkeeper Wright limped off the field and was replaced by Simonsen on 53 minutes. The number one was quickly into the action, standing

tall to save from Hammill. Evans mistimed and hammered over the crossbar when Steele was out of position following a corner, whilst Simonsen was again called upon to make a save on the hour, pushing away a powerful 30-yard shot from Hassell. Lowton replaced Ertl and went straight into the midfield battle and Yeates was the first Blade to be cautioned following a foul on O’Brien. United were struggling to emulate the encouraging signs of the first half and Speed’s last throw of the dice was to introduce Ward to forward line and switch to a 4-4-2 system. Lowton, now at right-back, was booked for a crude challenge on Hammill, and he was followed into the book by Nosworthy. Late on United shoved Bartley up front to add more height and power but the visitors were exposed at the back and Simonsen made another save, this time from O’Connor on 87 minutes. Barnsley made their first sub just as the fourth official indicated four minutes of added time and United attempted to throw everything at the home side. In the injury-time period the Blades laid seige on the Tykes goal but two corners and the majority of possession failed to secure a leveller. Barnsley: Steele, Trippier, Foster, Shackell, Hassell, Hammill, Colace, Doyle, O’Brien, Lovre (Hayes 90), O’Connor. Blades: Wright (Simonsen 53), Nosworthy, Montgomery, Ertl (Lowton 63), Britton, Evans, Yeates, Calve (Ward 75), Taylor, Bartley, Reid.

Performances in recent weeks, particularly at Barnsley at the weekend have proved that there is much need for strengthening. Since the summer the Blades have made six permanent signings (plus a further seven on loan), all on free transfers. The club did emulate that cut backs will have to be made via wages and transfer funds, but January 2011 is fast approaching and the transfer market is soon to open. United is currently one point better off than the bottom three and only a Blades defeat and a win (or draw) for any of the four sides below them this weekend would see the Blades possibly bottom of the table. It’s bad to see the Blades lay this low down in the Championship table but to think that they could be in the bottom three before Christmas is unthinkable and words unprintable spring to mind. New players (not on loan) need to be drafted in at the point where transfers can be made; media reports suggest that Sunderland would be willing to let Andy Reid leave the Stadium of Light – for a cut price fee of £500,000. They might have a disadvantage should they face stiff competition but this surely must be a transfer that the Blades board can’t even turn their noses at. The Blades might not be rich in transfer funds but Reid, who has proved inspiring whilst on loan, would prove to be a great asset to the team and a catalyst in staying away from relegation!

United’s 1-0 defeat at Barnsley was as much down to the team’s lack of concentration as it was to the dubious decision that led to the winning goal, according to Gary Speed. The Blades boss admitted to frustration that his side’s efforts had gone to waste in a contest he believed they did enough in to gain at least a share of the points: “It was the tight battle of a South Yorkshire derby that we expected, a game of few chances and the one that counted was a symptom of the occasional loss of concentration that has cost us dearly all season. “I can’t fault the lads’ effort, courage and will to win but we have contributed to our defeat again. I often have a go at them about appealing for things and today it was our throw-in and they did appeal. But it wasn’t given and then we switched off which proved the difference in the game. “I can’t really have a go at the linesman for his decision though, when our own decision making has been found wanting as well, and our defending wasn’t good enough. “There wasn’t much in it so I am desperately disappointed. We put them under pressure but Barnsley defended well and we lacked a cutting edge - there is no doubt that we need to bring players in because 16 goals in 20 games is clearly not good enough.” United pushed players forward late on in an attempt to claw something back but Speed pointed out that his team’s response was symptomatic of their muddled thinking: “We pushed big Kyle Bartley up front which was an obvious ploy but we then started playing the ball about at the back - another example of our bad decisionmaking.” Speed had made five changes to his starting line-up and explained the thinking behind Richard Wright’s selection, although he was later replaced by Steve Simonsen after picking up a thigh injury: “Steve hasn’t really done anything wrong but I just thought it was time to give Richard a go. He looked safe and comfortable before his injury but it is too late to talk about the severity of his injury.” Finally, the Blade boss had a word for the support his team had enjoyed from the travelling supporters: “The fans deserved better and hopefully we will give them that next time out.”

WOULD THE LAST ONE OUT, TURN OFF THE LIGHTS FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton
What many had seen as an impossible task has been found to be just that by the departed Gary Speed. With a threadbare squad, diminishing quality and an ever precarious financial position at Bramall Lane the job of steering Sheffield United Football Club towards the right end of the table was always going to be a tough one. So it is with little surprise that given the slightest chance, the Welshman has cut his losses and got out while the going was...not as bad as it could get. The slant that will be placed on it by those concerned will be that the chance to manage his beloved Wales was just too much for the ambitious young manager to turn down, but this shouldn’t hide the reality. Our club is currently enduring a very tough period. We don’t actually have enough players, those few we do have are lacking in confidence and there is no money to strengthen our squad in vital areas. While Gary Speed will have understood the difficult situation he was inheriting when he took the job, understandably leaving to take charge of his country seems to be his golden ticket out. I wouldn’t want to apportion blame to McCabe because of the despair he brought our club from, but without continued financial backing we are stumbling through darkness. The fans don’t know what is going to come next, not that that stops us guessing. Forums and messageboards are full of the armchair pundit’s next choice for manager with names such as Phil Brown, Gary Megson and the most recently unemployed Sam Allardyce all mentioned. Would it be possible to find a manager to get us playing entertaining and attacking football that retains the fighting spirit that has always characterised the Blades? In the first instance I’d settle for someone who can get us through a battle, because after Saturday’s showing at Barnsley that is precisely what we have on our hands.

OWLS KNOCK ROVER FOR SIX
MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday returned to winning ways at Hillsborough with a resounding 6-2 win over Bristol Rovers. In front of the club’s chairman-inwaiting Milan Mandaric, the Owls turned on the style to welcome the former Portsmouth and Leicester owner. Despite going behind to an early strike from Will Hoskins, who later scored a second, Wednesday always looked comfortable as goals from Chris Sedgwick, Tommy Miller, Gary Teale, Jermaine Johnson, James O’Connor and Paul Heffernan romped the team home to victory. Alan Irvine made one change for the Rovers clash following last weekend’s defeat at Swindon, with Daniel Jones starting at right back in place of the injured Lewis Buxton. Elsewhere, it was as you were for Wednesday, who were out of the traps first with Teale drilling a low shot narrowly wide inside two minutes. The Owls stayed in the driving seat for the early exchanges but Rovers were swift on the counter - as was evidenced in the seventh minute when the West Country side took the lead with their first effort on goal. Wayne Brown found space down the right to send a hanging ball to the back post, where top scorer Hoskins was on hand to nod past Weaver. Wednesday continued to press despite that setback and should have levelled two minutes later. Teale crossed from the left, Sedgwick headed back across goal and Clinton Morrison scooped over the bar from close range when it seemed easier to score. But the Owls did restore parity on nine minutes, with Teale again the architect. The Scot fired over a cross that fell the way of Morrison, who forced a good save from loanee keeper Mikkel Andersen. But the Dane could nothing to keep out the rebound, which was cleanly dispatched with a diving header from the onrushing Sedgwick - the midfielder’s first goal for SWFC. The in-form Teale was at the heart of the action, causing the Rovers’ defence problems with skill and pace - not to mention shooting ability that almost nudged Wednesday into the lead on 18 minutes but Andersen produced a top drawer save to avert the winger’s piledriver. Exactly midway through the first half, though, Andersen was left with no chance as the Owls went

in front. Teale’s header across goal was cleared only as far as Miller, who blasted a crisp drive past the Pirates’ custodian. And less than a minute later, dangerman Teale put his name on the scoresheet too. Morrison’s glancing header brought the best from Andersen but Teale reacted first to tap into the unguarded net. It was all-action football from the hosts, who promptly added another 13 minutes before half time. Johnson took centre stage this time with a fine solo goal, waltzing through the Rovers rearguard before thumping confidently past Andersen. Rovers needed an early goal in the second half if they had even the barest hope of launching a serious comeback. And Paul Trollope’s side started brightly enough, with Weaver saving smartly from Jeff Hughes and Chris Lines before the hourmark. Wednesday weathered that mini-storm and pushed forward themselves but suddenly saw Rovers reduce the arrears on 65 minutes. There appeared to be little danger when the ball fell to Hoskins on the right angle of the penalty area but the striker fashioned a crosscum-shot that looped over Weaver into the top corner. But the Owls were in no mood to be undone and duly extended their lead on 71 minutes. Substitute O’Connor played a neat give and go with Morrison and drilled an emphatic finish past Anderson to put the game to bed. With the points safe, Wednesday could ease off the gas but not without threatening a sixth. Teale rattled the woodwork with a curling drive from distance before Heffernan did add that final coating of gloss. The striker picked up a high ball over the top to bear down on goal and plant a firm drive past the helpless Anderson in front of the Kop. The goal was also Heffernan’s first for Wednesday on a memorable afternoon in S6 - on and off the pitch.
SIX OF THE BEST GAFFERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk
Alan Irvine was delighted with the Owls’ thumping 6-2 win over Bristol Rovers on the day that saw chairman-inwaiting Milan Mandaric take his S6 bow. Mandaric, watching from the directors’ box at Hillsborough, could only have been impressed as Wednesday brushed aside the West Country outfit - with six different players on the scoresheet. And manager Irvine said: “I am really pleased on what has been a marvellous day for Sheffield Wednesday. “What Milan has done for this club is fantastic. There was a really positive feeling around the ground before the game and I said that to the players in the dressing room. “They played really well and I thought that was our best attacking performance of the season. I think we have played better overall but today we scored six and could have had another six.” Irvine picked out Clinton Morrison as the striker produced a tireless display in the final third, albeit without finding the back of the net himself - despite enjoying a string of chances. The gaffer said: “How Clinton didn’t get a hat-trick, I do not know. He is normally such a clinical finisher in front of goal. “But I thought his performance today was terrific. He worked very hard and caused their defence a lot of problems.”

STATEMENT FROM MILAN MANDARIC
OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere thanks to all the shareholders of Sheffield Wednesday PLC for overwhelmingly accepting my proposals and making possible the purchase of the club at today’s Extraordinary General Meeting. It is now my honour and privilege to be confirmed as owner and chairman of Sheffield Wednesday FC. I would also like to thank all parties involved in helping to conclude this investment process. The Co-operative Bank, the departing directors and loan note holders, Nick and Howard - as well as my professional advisors and representatives David Hull of Hammonds and Paul Aldridge - all played key parts to ensure a protracted process reached this positive conclusion. To all creditors of the club, particularly those in the local community, I thank you for showing such patience and understanding in what have been very difficult times for Sheffield Wednesday. I would also like to thank the fans, whose passion and warmth gave me the inspiration to conclude the deal. I was overwhelmed with the welcome I received at my first game at Hillsborough on Saturday against Bristol Rovers. It was something that I will always remember and I will now do everything humanly possible not to let you down as your leader. It is my job to repay the warmth the fans have shown to me by getting this club back on its feet and keeping it there in the short and long term. I cannot achieve that target without Sheffield Wednesday entering what is a new era for the club as one happy family. We have a wonderful opportunity to take this club forward as one team and one partnership and the full backing of the fans is critical. I would ask all the fans to get right behind Alan and the team and we can all achieve our goals together. In return, I will roll up my sleeves and offer my energy, drive, experience and financial support to stabilise the club, help take us to the Championship and then establish Sheffield Wednesday as one of the top ten clubs in the country. No one should underestimate the work that needs to be done and some decisions will be made that are maybe not popular at times but I can guarantee they will always be for the good of the club. There will be battles ahead that we all must face together and you cannot win all of these battles - but together we can win the war. We all have loyalty to the same cause and I ask you to join me on a journey that I know will be incredibly exciting. Everyone has made me feel so welcome at Hillsborough since day one of my involvement and it is my pledge today to do everything possible to repay that faith with success for Sheffield Wednesday. I will do everything in my power, working with our excellent management team, to restore this club to the top table of English football.

TOGETHER WE CAN WIN THE WAR FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob
“There are battles ahead that we all must face together and you cannot win all of these battles – but together we can win the war”. This Churchillian rhetoric comes straight from the mouth of one Milan Mandaric, the saviour of our club, who has just sealed the deal. They say it’s the not knowing that kills you and it certainly did for a few months. It was a surreal period that turned out to be fairly Jekyll & Graham Hyde in the sense that we were going great on the field but threatened with extinction off it. Now we can move forward knowing the future is stable and nothing is holding us back thanks to my new favourite Serbian. Unfortunately for Vesna Vulovic, holding the record for surviving the highest fall from a plane without a parachute wasn’t quite enough to save her from demotion into second place. Another old statesman of local football is also in a debt of gratitude to an individual that has single handedly secured their future. God Bless the late, great Roger Bell who, without telling a soul, left behind a 6 figure sum to his beloved Hallam FC in his will. I would’ve loved to be in the Sandygate board room when news of this little windfall came through. Unfortunately, not all small local clubs are as fortunate as the 2nd oldest in the world. I am an avid subscriber to The Non-League Paper and it’s my sad duty to inform you that too many nonleague clubs are fading away into the abyss up and down the nation. Just think how you would feel if Wednesday, or whoever you supported, simply ceased to exist. Wednesday weren’t a million miles from that harsh reality but noble football clubs, with fans that love them like we love the Owls, are facing a more real threat weekly. So, if you don’t fancy the 510 mile round trip to Exeter this Saturday and have the intellect to recognise that no other outlet of entertaining professional football is available in town, then get yourself down to your local non-league team. No fewer than 5 local teams are at home this weekend; Dinnington, Parkgate, Handsworth, Stocksbridge and Worksop amongst others so take your pick, you won’t regret it.

a i l R w e a y Th JEAN RETURNS TO RE-OPEN THE RAILWAY AFTER TWO YEAR CLOSURE If Jean McDermott ran British Rail you can bet there wouldn’t be any snow on the line! This most determined of Sheffield’s landladies has worked tirelessly throughout 2010 to purchase, refurbish and re-open The Railway Hotel at Wadsley Bridge, the pub she previously called home for over seven years. The Railway had fallen into such disrepair that the results of her hard work are hard to believe – this beautifully appointed, traditional inn is now the epitome of the welcoming, friendly pub. The inviting bar, with a large seating area and lounge, is fully redecorated – and already beautifully decked out for Christmas – with plush seating. To one side is something rarely seen these days; the snuggest of snug rooms, bringing back memories of Ena Sharples and Minnie Caldwell in the Rovers Return! But Jean hasn’t finished yet, because there is another surprise in the form of the old snooker room, which Jean is converting into a Concert Room where live entertainment will take place. Jean has brought all of her 28 years experience back to the Railway to create this transformation and old regulars are already asking if she will reinstate her famous roast pork sandwiches on a Sunday! The all important question of the ale has been addressed with the arrival of Thwaites Cask Ale from only £1:80 per pint with more cask ales to follow. Stones Bitter and Thwaites Smooth are £2:00, Carling Lager is £2:30 and Warsteiner premium German lager is £2:90.
Jean started her career 28 years ago at the Wellington at Shalesmoor before running the Railway for the first time. Her impressive list of hostelries includes the Grange Park Golf Club at Kimberworth, the Blue Ball at Wharncliffe Side, The Pheasant at Wadsley Bridge for over five years before moving to The Forest on Rutland Road, her first freehold pub. Jean then followed this by the running of The Sportsman at Stannington for over two years before moving up to the Crown and Glove at the top of Stannington. Then in August of 2009 Jean bought the freehold of The Railway and the rest is history. A history of hard work and devotion to her craft, resulting in a pub where everything will run like clockwork – a clockwork train at The Railway! Presently the timetable is that The Railway is open weekends only, although between Christmas and New Year, Jean will also open midweek. In the New Year midweek opening will be introduced as demand requires, ie: midweek quiz nights, musicians nights and games nights etc. Sup Ale!
