GET UP AND GO TO MAKE THE BIG THREE-O! Sheffield Half Marathon organisers are campaigning to every runner in the race to Get up and Go to raise a Big Three-O. The 13.1 mile chase reaches its 30th outing in 2011 and organisers want each runner to raise £30 for the ten nominated charities and smash previous money making efforts. Last year the SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon donated £95,000 to ten local charities and this year they want to break into a six-figure sum.

If each runner entered into the race and raised just £30 each, the total would reach £165,000. Margaret Lilley, chair of the Sheffield Half Marathon, said: “The ten charities we donate to are more than beneficiaries. They give up months of their time to help make the event run smoothly and help out wherever they can. Their charities also do a great deal of good in the local community and I would love to be able to give a record breaking sum to them in this landmark year for the Half

Marathon.” Runners are also being encouraged to tackle the 3km Fun Run which sees hundreds of entrants from toddlers to grandparents competing. The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon and 3k Fun Run will take place on Sunday 8 May 2011 at Sheffield International Venues managed facility Don Valley Stadium from 9:30am. The chosen charities for 2011 are: Sheffield Teenage Cancer Trust, Motor Neurone Disease Association South

2010 was yet another exciting and successful year for the newly named Motorpoint Arena (formerly Sheffield Arena), with the usual high profile mix of national and international events. 2010 saw the Arena launch Arena Ticket Shop – a one stop ticketing shop for all local and regionally ticketed events giving local venues the opportunity to put their shows infront of the Arena’s customers. And of course the 5 year naming rights deal with Motorpoint, the UK’s leading car supermarket, who made a seven figure investment into the city to rename the venue in August 2010. Last year the Arena saw Peter Kay make his Motorpoint Arena debut, playing 5 sell out shows in November and he will be back for a further three shows in January 2011, host TV favourites Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing On Ice, The X-Factor Live Tour Britian’s Got Talent Live and the critically acclaimed Doctor Who Live and Star Wars In Concert shows. Not forgetting the sell-out shows that rocked the Arena including Lady Gaga, Michael Buble, Rod Stewart, Rihanna, Simply Red, JLS and Kings Of Leon. 2011 is already promising to be another bumper year, even at this early stage there is an exciting line-up of acts already confirmed and many many more to be added. 2011 is already looking like the year of comedy with a record breaking number of comedy acts set to appear, attracting more than 130,000 comedy fans through the doors to see Peter Kay, Russell Howard, John Bishop, Lee Evans, Alan Carr and Jason Manford. Some of the 2011 highlights include; Usher, The X Factor Live Tour, Justin Bieber, the return of International Show Jumping with the Yorkshire International Show Jumping Event, Batman Live, Rihanna Katy Perry. To view all the events visit www. motorpointarena.co.uk Due to the phenomenal demand and the sell out of his first OMG UK tour dates, the multi-Platinum selling recording artist Usher has added a second leg of 4 Arena dates in February 2011. Tickets for the Sheffield date on Wednesday 23rd February are priced £40 £45. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Predictions for 2011 Predictions are precarious at anytime. If everything you predict comes true you are classed as a fake or accused of being a witch. I am glad to say I am neither. It is a natural thing for a psychic to predict future events but not all will come true. I once woke my husband up at 3am and told him that I had just seen a red and white plane blow up in the air. He responded by telling me not be so daft. I went to work that same day and a colleague said ‘isn’t it awful about that plane in Lockerbie.’ Another accurate prediction I made was when I saw a black car crash into a wall followed by a number of other cars and motorbikes. I don’t have to tell you who that is. Right, here we go... Predictions (1) There will be items stolen from Clarence House. I feel that objects are already missing but nobody has noticed. One of these items will be seen on a internet auction site. (2) There will be a fire in a large hotel in Dubai. The cause will be electrical. (3) The 7th of January is Nick Clegg’s birthday. I predict that he will make an announcement concerning a pregnancy. (4) The Prime Minster of France will become a father. (5) A popular comedian and a film star in her eighties and connected with the USA will pass over. (6) Michael Jackson’s doctor will be jailed. A drug overdose is involved. (7) Princess Beatrice will announce her engagement. (8) A once popular game show artist will be found dead in his flat. January is the month of depression as we realise that we have drank and spent too much. Here’s a little spell to reduce your debts... (1) Find a quiet spot (somewhere that you wont be disturbed) and write down all your debts big and small. (2) AIR - Light an incense stick and gently wave

your list through the incense smoke. Think about the debts that you don’t want and all the good things in life. (3) FIRE - With a bowl of water handy, very carefully, set fire to your list and imagine your debts vanishing as the paper burns. See the words gradually disappear from your sight. (4) WATER - Carefully put out your burning list using the bowl of water and think how liberating it would be to be debt free. Feel the burden lifting from your shoulders. (5) MANTRA - Say the following words out loud... ‘Earth, Air, Fire and Water. I call upon the power of the magical elements to banish my debts from my life, so mote be.’ (6) EARTH- Dig a hole in your garden and bury the contents of your bowl. Think of your debts dissolving into the ground as they are taken from you and re-absorbed into nature. Good Luck with both the spell and your New Year’s resolutions. Next week will be ‘Superstitions, Talismans and The Evil Eye.’ If you have any questions or would like to book a psychic reading please email psychicglynis@ talktalk.net or text 07811632353.

BUTCHERʼS SECRET RECIPE REVEALED After many years and numerous attempts of trying to lose weight local woman Anne Butcher decided she really needed the support from a group to help her with her diet attempts. Determined to lose her weight she went along to see what Slimming World could offer her and now 18 months later she has achieved her own personal weight loss target and now wants to help others re-ignite their lives. Anne explained “Over the years there had been many tears and tantrums because I felt I was constantly battling to shed the excess weight, I was always going around in circles losing gaining trying something new”. Anne’s consultant continued “When Anne first walked through the doors she told me about her past attempts, I explained the Extra Easy eating plan to Anne and she soon realised her ‘battle’

could be won. I explained that she could fill up on all the fabulous free food which is unlimited whichever eating plan you decide to follow , also include our healthy extra’s and if she still had the room she had also got her daily syn allowance, members can use these for whatever they like, no food is forbidden with Slimming World”. Anne decided to join that night after everything was explained to her about Slimming World and how it works. Anne told us “I now love being part of the group, we all share our highs and lows in Image Therapy where the members get chance to discuss new idea’s, recipes and their progress, however If you don’t like to talk that’s OK because at Slimming World you are never humiliated and everything is confidential which really put me at ease. Also in Image Therapy you soon realise you are not alone,

everyone there is for exactly the same reason, and that is to get help, support and encouragement to lose your weight” Anne has lost her weight by following Slimming World’s Extra Easy eating plan and being able to have unlimited amounts of pasta, jacket potatoes, roast dinners, bbq’s, cooked breakfasts, spaghetti bolognaise and her ultimate favourite chicken curry and rice. Anne remarks “When the whole family visits we all eat the same meals which are an added bonus. They are incredibly proud of my weight loss. I now have more energy to play with my wonderful grandchildren, I have added years to my life.” Alison her consultant said “ Anne soon was wanting to do some form of exercise as she has lost the weight and she has reached her own personal target she has increased her activity which we encourage members to do with

Slimming Worlds own Body Magic. This can be as simple as walking the dog and or leaving the car at home for short journeys or like Anne visiting the local gym”. Anne can’t believe how lucky she is to have found Slimming World “It’s changed my whole life around, I feel like a new woman, Not only have I lost weight, a truly believe that I have added years to my life. Not only have my eating habits changed but so has the endless energy I now have,” Anne was so enthused with the way in which she lost her weight that she herself has now trained to become a Slimming World Consultant. She will be opening the Totley group on Monday the 17th of January at The Heatherfield Club Baslow Road 7.30pm and it shall continue to meet there same time each week throughout the year.

Anne before Slimming World “Changed her whole life”. Anne was so enthused by her weight loss she trained to be a Slimming World Consultant and opens her group in Totley on the 17th of January.

HAPPY NEW YEAR I can’t help but feel optimistic for the year ahead. It’s true that spending cuts and tax increases will have an effect on spending but what kind of spending? I can easily see that the housing market may well be sluggish and there may be an effect of the VAT increase on larger capital expenditure in the home such as cars, TVs and furnishings however food and drink will be largely unaffected. If somone drinks 3 pints of beer twice a week this will increase their spend by around £0.60p. Hardly life changing. It’s also true that some of us will invariably be affected by cuts in local government services but in a city of 600000 people the percentage will be quite small. It’s so easy to talk an economy down and the pessimists amongst us will be having a field day. Well, the indications here at The Mercury Newspaper are that there are many reasons to be cheerful and the private sector and self-employed are working hard and many businesses are doing very well. is paying dividends both here at the paper and for those we advertise and work with. Local ‘micro-economies’ have tremendous potential for growth and investment and the local markets will be seeing new business developing throughout the year. The biggest growth sector and potential in our market is the vibrant and exciting growth in micro-breweries and real ales. We actually saw pubs re-opening, with substantial investment, in the 3rd quarter of the year and a number of them were featured here in the paper. The Rotherham Beer Festival, to be held at Magna between the 2nd-5th March, will attract thousands and thousands of visitors. WMCs and Social Clubs should be involving themselves in this growing market and we can assist in anyone needs further information. Shopfitters and printers should see a boost to their business as more people decide to invest in their futures. This country has always been driven by enterprise and if we can learn anything from previous recessions it’s the fact that new and exciting businesses always grow out of them. Local businesses and communities have an opportunity to engage with the ‘chimney pots’ around them by advertising and promoting local enterprise. Clubs and pubs can offer reasonably priced leisure and entertainment opportunities and, once again, support local brewers and entertainers. Local shops are more and more supporting local producers. This year will be ‘Support Local and Shop Local’ at The Mercury Newspaper and all the indications are that this is going to be a very good year indeed.

Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. WELCOME TO 2011 MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN by Trevor Thomas

On behalf of the whole team, can I firstly wish you a very Happy New Year. I hope as well that you had great time enjoying Christmas and ushering in 2011. Our own private celebrations were a blast literally thanks to an exploding bottle of Brut Cava we decided to open, although it decided to actually open itself virtually on the stroke of midnight as well. The entire table, chairs and surrounding floor were quickly covered in the stuff, although there was still some left for us to toast the year in with happily. I felt more like a podium winning Formula 1 driver. Let’s not forget that it’s also sadly been a bad time for some people as a result of the recent cold weather. I’ve spoken to lots of listeners who have suffered with frozen and blocked water pipes, and I myself was left without water at home on Christmas Day. There have also been problems with burst pipes as well of course, and it’ll take a good while time for some to get back to normality. Come rain or shine though, you can be sure we’ll be here through out letting you know what’s going on, and hopefully putting a smile on your face with the best of the 60s, 70s and more. Join us on 990, 1305 and 1548 AM, or at magicam. co.uk or may be even on DAB digital radio where you’ll hear us in crystal clear stereo quality 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. See you in the morning for the Breakfast Show, Trevor

Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering.

LIVE REVIEW ARTIST: Paul Weller VENUE: Motorpoint Arena

if you any news, reviews, releases/events you’d like us to cover please forward At the tender age of 52 Paul Weller still has the details to same passion, sweat and love for live music as info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk he did when he first broke onto the scene as a cocksure teenager. It wasn’t the perfect night for a gig as the snow continued to fall outside resulting in many punters not turning up fearing they couldn’t make it to (or fear escaping from) the Arena. That said, Weller, who was faced with a below half full venue (the culprit of snowflakes or poor ticket sales?), threw himself into the show regardless Artist: Alexandra Burke of the apathy that his set list developed. Sheer Venue: Sheffield City Hall professionalism enabled him to do this but since when Date: Tuesday 1st February was rock ‘n’ roll about professionalism? Nearly every song from his new album was given Tickets: www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk a run out and during extended back to back airings Price: £30.00 from Wake Up The Nation the crowd had the feel of the waiting time between ceremony and reception at a large wedding. One may insist that it is the artist’s prerogative on what they add or omit from their set list. However, in this particular case I disagree. At least 90% of tickets for this gig were sold on the back of Weller’s back catalogue. If Weller’s first album of his career was WUTN then he’d be playing at The Boardwalk. Strange Town was by far the highlight of the night for me and it did give my the tingles that make a gig special but unfortunately, that was about it. I did get a buzz from being able to easily stand at the front and admire Weller’s ballsy performance and Steve Craddock’s talent and swagger on guitar but it shouldn’t have been that easy. None of the classic songs that sold tickets were played (I’m not sure Art School is considered a classic by many) and I find that fairly self-indulgent by Weller. I fear that this will be the last time Paul Weller appears at Sheffield Arena but I don’t think the local demographic nor the man himself will be too concerned.

live music review SHEFFIELD GET THE X FACTOR Just as the much hyped talent show/soap opera that is X Factor draws to a close we are reminded that an X Factor Winner is for life, not just for Christmas Number 1 (well some are anyway). In my eyes there have only been two past winners worthy of staying in the spotlight after everyone has packed away the tinsel, Leon Jackson and Steve Brookstein. Of course I jest, i’m obviously talking about Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke. Alexandra is set to light up the UK as she sets off on her debut UK tour, which will take place at the start of 2011. The ‘All Night Long’ tour will see the songstress play a massive 18 dates around the country including a stop off at Sheffield City Hall on Tuesday 1 February 2011. Having won the fifth series of The X Factor, Alexandra Burke released her A-list produced debut album ‘Overcome’ in 2009, which went straight to Number One in the UK and has already born four huge chart hits including her tour’s title All Night Long, Broken Heels and two number one singles Hallelujah and Bad Boys’ featuring Flo Rida. The album has already sold in excess of 600,000 copies in the UK alone, already making it a double platinum selling album. Burke later released one of her biggest singles Start Without You which reached Number One. A radio playlist favourite, her latest single was a fusion of traditional reggae, dancehall beats and power pop which again displays the further versatility of this talented performer. For her debut tour, fans can expect a spectacular gig with show stopping routines and sensational performances of all her much loved songs and hit singles.

TALK OF THE TOWNE

Justin Townes Earle is an anomaly. He’s tall as the day is long, all angles and elbows and a hard stare, both welcoming and deadly serious. He’s Nashville North, all set up in lower Manhattan now, just like his hero Woody Guthrie, with twang and charm intact. That hard working earnestness has paid off, to say the least. Justin won the Best New and Emerging Artist at the 2009 Americana Music Awards. His record, Midnight at the Movies, was named one of the best records of last year by Amazon, received four stars in Rolling Stone and found a sweet spot in the blackened hearts of fans and critics alike. GQ Magazine named him one of the 25 best dressed men in the world in 2010. He also appeared on HBO’s Treme with his dad, troubadour Steve Earle, on whose Grammy Award-winning Townes record Justin also guests. The aforementioned Woody Guthrie once said, “Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple.” On Harlem River Blues, Justin chose the simple route. The record’s not a wall of sound produced to the rafters. It’s rockin’ and reelin’ at times, sweet and slow at others—and it’s great. Like good fried chicken, a well-cut suit and a handmade guitar, there’s heaven to be found in the beautifully crafted simpler things. Compared to the much-lauded Midnight at the Movies, Harlem River Blues is more mature and increasingly nuanced, while still embracing the raw voice and clean sound of previous standout tracks like “Mama’s Eyes.” Harlem River Blues kicks off hot with

the title track’s choir of backing singers and electric guitar, slow dances through a decrepit tenement on “One More Night in Brooklyn,” and swings à la Jerry Lee Lewis on “Move Over Mama.” “Working for the MTA” is a modern day railway ballad, embracing the labor movement in classic folk singer style over some heartbreaking pedal steel from Calexico’s Paul Niehaus. With percussive guitar, killer standup bass lines by Bryn Davies and a guest appearance from Jason Isbell, this record hums along like a 6 train jumpin’ the tracks and heading straight for the Tennessee state line. Harlem River Blues straddles not only the Mason-Dixon, but time itself. As versed in Mance Lipscomb as he is in M. Ward and sporting Marc Jacobs suspenders, Justin Townes Earle is a man beyond eras. With Harlem River Blues, a record that’s perfect for late Indian summer nights on either the front porch or fire escape, Justin’s found yet another way to be a timeless original. 2011

Eleven for Eleven Welcome to 2011, it’s a new year and a brand new column, and while the ink is barely dry and everything is still shiny and new, it’s time to look ahead to see what’s on the horizon in the world of movies. Whether you’re into action or horror or romantic comedies, there’s something for everyone here. Eleven Must See Movies in 2011 11. Green Lantern: The phrase ‘they’ll make a movie out of any superhero’ has never been truer as Ryan Reynolds slips into the skin-tight suit of the Green Lantern to save the earth from the evil forces of supervillain, Sinestro. 10. Fright Night (Horror): It might be a remake of the 1980’s vampire horror comedy, but it has David Tennant as the cowardly Peter Vincent and that alone should be worth the price of movie admission. 9. The Smurfs: If you’re under a certain age you’ll have no idea what a ‘Smurf’ is. But this live action adventure set in New York City has high hopes of bringing the blue critters back into the limelight as the evil wizard, Gargamel, chases the Smurfs from their cartoon world and into ours. 8. No Strings Attached: Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman want a ‘no strings’ relationship in this modern romantic comedy, yet, despite the best of intentions, their attraction soon blossoms into something more. Can they stick to their agreement and stay ‘friends with benefits’ or will love triumph? 7. Super: After losing his wife to a drug dealer, an utterly average bloke transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with no actual super powers, but who still wants to rid the world of evil. If you liked Kick Ass then you’ll love this. 6. Don’t be Afraid of the Dark (Horror): A young girl sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend discovers creatures living in the shadows of her new home. Everything about this movie is terrifying (even the trailer)! 5. Super 8: Very little is known about this movie from aficionados, Steven Spielberg and J J Abrams, but this sci-fi thriller features an escaped creature and, quite probably, a bunch of characters running around taking some very blurry camera footage. 4. Thor & Captain America: The First Avenger: There are actually two movies here, but as they both look incredible and both feature superheroes, there’s little to separate them. Thor features some jaw-dropping visuals while Captain America has some cracking action scenes, but will it be Thor or Captain America who proves to be king of the superheroes in 2011? 3. Tangled: Disney is back on form with this retelling of the classic myth which features the adventures of Princess Rapunzel as she hires a thief to help her to travel to the place of floating lights. Heart-warming stuff. 2. The Fighter: Mark Wahlberg plays “Irish” Micky Ward on the road to the world light welterweight boxing title. Look for strong emotional scenes and some potentially Oscar winning performances in this dramatic movie. 1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2: Also known as The Outrageous Cash In, the final book of the Harry Potter series barely had enough content for one movie, yet the producers saw fit to split it in two! That said, this is the final instalment in a ten year legacy and it’s worth seeing just for completeness, and to see who dies, of course. That’s it! More movies coming soon. Happy New Year!

NO COMPROMISE Riverside Interiors Advertorial Feature

20

This is the philosophy that guides Riverside Interiors every time a customer makes an enquiry –whether it be for a kitchen, bedroom or home office. No compromise on design, delivery, installation or aftercare service – the aim is perfection and 100% satisfaction for the client. Their enviable reputation is built on attention to detail, and a recognition that any project they are asked to undertake represents a significant investment for the customer. The commitment to perfection begins at the design stage – consultation between Riverside and the client is undertaken with one aim in view – to ensure that the design team are able to translate the customer’s vision and dream into reality, and while they will advise and guide, they recognize that ultimately their role is to deliver a finished product that absolutely meets not only the customer’s needs, but also their desires. By manufacturing the design in their own on-site factory, Riverside are able to guarantee that the same goal of perfection will equally apply to the uninstalled furniture – it will not leave the building until a rigorous and thorough quality control inspection has determined that there are no faults, flaws or blemishes that will spoil the client’s enjoyment of their investment.

Most importantly from the Company’s standpoint, installation is carried out by a team of expert craftsmen, who also recognize that, for a short time, they are intruding into a client’s home and causing a degree of disruption. Therefore not only do they take pride in a fault-free installation of a quality product, they will treat the client and their home with courtesy and respect, and do their utmost to minimize the disturbance whilst on site. Finally Riverside are committed to providing an after-care service second to none. On the rare occasion a customer is unfortunate to suffer a problem, Riverside will deal with the issue with the same speed, care and attention to detail that has become a hallmark within the company. Actions speak louder than words; and countless testimonials (many of which can be seen on the Company’s website) prove that Riverside do indeed live up to their own high standards in everything they do. You can buy with confidence from the Company, safe in the knowledge that you are in the hands of experts who will turn your dream into reality. A Brief History For over ten years, Riverside Interiors have been designing, manufacturing and installing quality fitted kitchen, bedroom and home office furniture

throughout Yorkshire. Managing Director Alan Dixon’s dream of owning and running his own Kitchen and Bedroom showroom became a reality when in 1999 he discovered an ideal location in Penistone ( down by the riverside would you believe! ) for the base of operations. It would prove to be a great find as by the end of the year 2000 Riverside Interiors had already emerged as the local company that led rather than followed fashion. Alan’s dream was not simply to sell kitchens; it was important to create the manufacturing facility alongside so that any special requirements or one off design specifications could be introduced there and then, causing little or no delay in the delivery schedules. From the outset Riverside Interiors has been a true family business with the introduction of Alan’s wife Lorraine running the office, who took on the busy roll of invoicing and accounting, and Karen, Alan’s sister, running the showroom, and John, Alan’s father who helped deliver the furniture and appliances. All this helped create the friendly easygoing atmosphere that still exists today –all customers regularly comment on how warm a reception they encounter when they first arrive. The 10th Anniversary of Riverside Interiors was celebrated throughout 2009 and was met with great ceremony along with an update of the livery to the vans, a refurbished showroom fascia and the introduction of a new company logo. However the Company remains committed to the same core values of service, quality and attention to detail which created the foundation for its reputation from the first day it opened.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally Hello Everyone, 2011 has arrived and all at Sheffield 50+ would like to wish you Good Health and Happiness and all the very best for the New Year. As we leave 2010 though, which seems to have had more than its fair share of both natural and man-made disasters and catastrophes, I think we are all going to need a lot of good luck as we face 2011. The prospects for a year of austerity and job cuts put quite a damper on our natural hopes for a new start and a better year. However we have to be as optimistic as possible and Sheffield 50+ will be playing its part to try and see we older people can play our part and have our say in how cuts are managed in Sheffield. We will be keeping you informed about events as they occur and about where you can go and make your voice heard: it is up to every one of us though to take advantage of the opportunities offered. Our monthly Congress Meeting in the Town Hall is a good place to start: every month we have speakers from various parts of the Council, the NHS, South Yorkshire Police, the Fire and Rescue service and may others who affect us. They tell us what they are doing, answer questions and, we hope, take back and take into consideration, our views and comments as critical friends. So as we make our New Year resolutions, make one of yours an effort to be more involved in what goes on in our City. As a start why not come to Congress this Thursday Jan 6th (see Diary dates). We can make a difference!

Some do’s and don’ts for digital switchover Digital Switchover comes to the Sheffield area in August or September next year. It affects all viewers who watch TV through an aerial. You may already have satellite or cable on your main TV but you will need to convert any other TVs you have which work off an aerial. Don’t buy a new television set, unless you want a new one – your old set can be converted with a digital box. If your set doesn’t have a modern SCART socket on the back, ask for a digital box with a built in RF modulator. This will then connect into the aerial socket on the back of the TV. If you have a good picture now, don’t buy a new aerial. There is no such thing as a “digital aerial”. If you need help and advice about setting up, tuning and retuning your digital equipment or would like to ask for more information about the switchover you can call Digital UK’s Advice Line on 08456 50 50 50, or visit their website at www.digitaluk.co.uk

VAT Increase

Everyone will be aware that VAT goes up from 17.5% to 20% from January 4th. If like me, you don’t think too much about how it’s worked out, you will just assume that if the price was £100, it should now be £102.50. Not necessarily, according to an article on the news this morning. Most prices shown, already include the original 17.5%, so you need to find out how much the original exvat price was. There is a useful calculator on the internet which will work out the VAT included in any price and subtract it. That is the price that should be used to calculate the extra 2.5%. It doesn’t make a lot of difference on a £100 but for more expensive items it can mount up. I have worked out a small table as a guide which I hope is correct – I’m sure someone will tell me if not. If you are over 75 or if you are entitled to claim disability allowances, are blind or partially-sighted or have lived in a care home for six months or more, you will be offered special help to convert one TV to digital. The Switchover Help Scheme will write to you to give you all the information you need and arrange for an engineer to come to your home to fit a digital box and convert your TV. They will show you how to work it and can provide 12 months after care service to help you with any problems you might have. Look out for the information coming through your door. It has a purple TV set on the envelope. There is a charge of £40 for most people, but if you are offered the help and you are on income-related benefits, you won’t have to pay. For more information, call the Help Scheme on 0800 40 85 900 or visit their website at www.helpscheme.co.uk Finally, don’t panic. The digital switchover has already happened in many parts of the UK, and most viewers cope really well. Don’t let anyone into your home unless you have arranged an appointment for them to come to do work for you and if you think that you might have been sold equipment you don’t need or want, contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 for more advice.

NHS CONTINUING CARE Sheila suffers from advanced alzheimers disease She rarely sits still and when wandering is a risk to herself and aggressive to other people in her care home. She needs constant supervision to be safe. Sheila is entitled to have her care fees paid by the NHS. There are many people like Sheila who are entitled to free care because their health needs go beyond what a local authority can be expected to provide in a care or nursing home. This is the case even though the resident may be living in a privately run home and paying for their care entirely by themselves. With the average cost of nursing home care around £600 per week, the financial stakes are high both for cash

strapped primary care trusts who fund the care and the residents who must otherwise pay Eligibility for free care is frequently determined late opening up the possibility of large retrospective claims for reimbursement. An area of great concern is with those elders whose decline has brought them to the last few weeks of their life and who may deteriorate rapidly A fast track assessment should be implemented but this is often overlooked. Over the last decade, a series of reports by the Health Service Ombudsman found maladministration by the Department of Health in the manner in which eligibility for free NHS care was handled. There were great differences between primary care

trusts with the greatest provider 162 times more likely to provide free care than the least. These differences led to the introduction of a new national framework for assessment but many of those entitled to free care still not receiving it. Elderly people deserve a better service but in straightened times they seem unlikely to get it without a fight. HAS YOUR PET EATEN TOO MUCH OVER CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR? THE DANGERS OF GASTRIC TORSION IN DOGS

Over the festive period, it may be tempting to over-indulge our pets with as much food and drink as we consume ourselves. But, leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is warning dog owners to take extra care to guard against a potentially fatal condition known as ‘gastric torsion’ which can occur when dogs eat too quickly or start playing straight after a meal. The condition, which is also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), can kill dogs if left untreated. It causes the stomach to fill with air and twist around on itself. This means that nothing can enter or leave the stomach and the circulation can be cut off. When the blood cannot reach the heart and major organs, this can cause abnormal heart rhythms and death of the affected organs. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “Large, deep-chested dog breeds, such as Great Danes and Weimeraners, are most prone to gastric torsion. “It often occurs if exercise has been taken soon after a meal or if food has been consumed too quickly, which causes air to be swallowed at the same time. This can be a particular problem in dogs that are nervous or excitable.” Affected dogs may become restless, anxious and make frequent attempts to vomit. Often they will retch and salivate a lot. Their stomach swells up and can feel hard like a drum. The swollen stomach presses against the diaphragm, restricting the lungs, which means affected dogs may also have difficulty breathing. Veterinary treatment for gastric torsion typically includes administering fluids and emergency first aid to stabilise the patient, followed by surgery to return the stomach to its normal position. Sean continues: “If you suspect your dog might be suffering from gastric torsion, you should seek veterinary advice immediately. The sooner you act, the better the chance your pet has of surviving.” Reducing the risk of gastric torsion: · Don’t feed your dog within an hour before or after vigorous exercise. · It is better to feed an adult dog twice a day rather than once. · Avoid large volumes of water intake straight after feeding for ‘at-risk’ dogs. · If your dog is anxious or fearful, seek behavioural advice from your veterinary practice. Let anxious dogs feed separately in a quiet location. For more information about pet health log onto www.pdsa.org.uk

Okay, it’s 2011!! Bad news is that most waters are still frozen; good news is that it won’t be too long (hopefully!) before they are fishable as long as the warmer weather stays around. With that in mind, and the complete pointlessness of a male of the species making any weight loss/give up drink etc New Year resolutions, the only thing we can reasonably expect to achieve this year is a new personal best fish!! So what will yours be? A 6lb chub? How about a 25lb carp? Maybe a 10lb tench? Honestly; I don’t do it anymore....the disappointment is too much! I’ve lost count of the hours I’ve spent ‘targeting’ a specific fish, a new top weight or a venue pb only to fail miserably.... Perhaps you will achieve more than me this year, but I bet I enjoy my fishing just as much! With everywhere currently under a substantial layer of ice, many anglers will be on the t’internet looking for advice, help or just to wind each other up. One of the best forums in our area has to be North West Carp (www.northwestcarp. co.uk) which gives some comprehensive assistance to any angler looking for a new venue, new tactics or just a bit of banter between mates. The site is divided into a large number of different sections including a ‘for sale’ to get rid of those unwanted Christmas presents! Plenty of hints and tips from experienced anglers too, so there is much to learn and if you are doing something right, then loads of opportunities to share your tactics! Lots of sales on at the moment; retailers such as

Stapeley Angling Centre have the now famous Boxing Day event (crush!), and many others are doing the same to shift last seasons stock to make way for new. It can be a great time of year to grab a bargain, but are retail sales all they are cracked up to be?? I had a revealing conversation this week with a highly respected local angling shop owner who tells me that angling retail may not be the trade to be in for much longer...Sounds like scare mongering? Not really if you think about it; manufacturers can give a better discount to online operators who have far lower overheads than shop owners and can therefore afford to place a bigger unit order. It follows that they can sell the item for a lower price than the high street store, so where does the angler buy from? The local shop cannot match the price of online outlets unless prepared to sell at little or no profit, maybe even a loss, just to make the sale!! The owner I spoke to saw one account decrease from £70,000 per year down to £30,000 because the manufacturer refused to give the same discount as he would give to an online retailer because the shop couldn’t order as many units!! No surprise without the same reductions! Just a thought for you when you are after new kit....keep your local shop in business because you will never get the same service online! NH racing returns to TV from Chepstow, Sandown and Wincanton on Saturday – weather permitting

The final race on the BBC is the 2.20 where Fine Parchment can supplement his recent win at Cheltenham. He looks to be thriving at present and should go in again here. Nozic’s recent form figures (or should it be letters?) make horrible reading but if he gets round he could give the selection most to do. Others with decent chances are It’s Crucial, Cruchain and Fiendish Flame.

Over at Sandown Channel 4 are screening the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle at 2.40 which is surrounded by three handicaps at 2.05, 3.15 If the weather permits there are three good NH and 3.45. Wincanton makes up the rest of the meetings to look forward to this Saturday. You broadcast with its 3.00 and 3.30 races which are need to keep a check on non runners however both handicaps. as there are many multiple entries for horses The Tolworth Hurdle has every chance of as trainers try get a run for them after the providing Festival clues as some promising young weather disruption. The trainer has also entered Minella meeting where the big Grade 3 handicap promises Class however so perhaps Gibb River won’t to be a cracker of a race and is preceded by the run. The one I like most here however is Paul Grade 1 Finale Junior Novices Hurdle. There are Nicholls’ Toubab, also a last time out winner in a three races being televised by the BBC which is good time. Megastar also ran well last time and something of a rarity these days. rates a danger, as does Meetings Man who may Sandown has four races on Channel 4 and well carry a saver for me if prices permit. French Opera will be dangerous if Hennessy comeback and the lightly weighted turning out but could be a pretty short price. Becauseicouldn’tsee looks to be improving with The 3.45 handicap hurdle has several interesting racing. Hills of Aran also ran in the Hennessy contenders. Top weight Mille Chief looks to have where he was reported to have been as big as a a big chance as does Dr Livingstone but I am bull. In the Wincanton 3.30 Fine Parchment has an entry. If he lines up for this instead of at Chepstow he would merit the selection. However I like the chances of I’m A Legend and Bradford Boris - the pair of them are winners over course and distance and both are lightly weighted if they get a run. Marginal preference goes to Neil Mulholland’s I’m A Legend but I would certainly not be surprised if Bradford Boris made a winning debut for the season here. Of the others Regal Heights also could prove a threat. On Sunday at Leopardstown I like the chances of Slieveardagh in the big handicap hurdle. MILLERS GET OFF TO WINNING START TO YEAR MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

Goals either side of half-time by Jason Taylor and Nick Fenton handed the Millers a hardfought win away at Moss Rose. It will have been an especially satisfying victory for Ronnie Moore’s men who were made to work diligently for the points by a tireless Macclesfield side.Jason Taylor rounded off a swift attack to open the scoring in the first half and Fenton reacted first in the box to secure the points in the closing stages, giving Rotherham their second win in three days since the New Year. Dale Tonge returned to the starting eleven for the fixture in place of Danny Coid who missed out with an ankle injury - the only change to the squad from the New Year’s Day demolition of Port Vale at Don Valley. Tom Newey’s blushes were spared with just three minutes on the clock.A deflected cross-field ball came harmlessly to Newey and the Millers’ left-back opted to nod the ball back to Andy Warrington. Silkmen striker Tyrone Barnett reacted quickly to latch onto the loose ball but could only dink the ball over the crossbar under pressure from Warrington who made himself big between the sticks. The Millers had a chance of their own two minutes later through a troublesome corner.Nicky Law’s hanging centre allowed Ryan Taylor to meet the ball at the far post. The ball fell into the path of Fenton but the centre-half was denied a clean strike by a firm block by Lewis Chalmers for the Silkmen. After quarter of an hour the Millers had another great chance to break the deadlock.Jason Taylor played a teasing ball across the

STEELER’S DOUSE THE BLAZE ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle

As many people continued their recovery from New Year’s celebrations, the Steelers made the trip to Coventry SkyDome on Sunday to take on the Blaze. Coventry, coached by Team GB coach Paul Thompson, have had a rough run of late, losing players to injury and also to lengthy bans following their bench clearance against the Nottingham Panthers, which made the news on both sides of the Atlantic. Having lost their last three games, one of which to Sheffield on December 30th (6-4) the Blaze had a point to prove. The Steelers were still missing defenceman Steve Munn, out with a concussion picked up against the Cardiff Devils, courtesy of Brad Voth. The visitors took the lead first, with a powerplay goal courtesy of Jeff Legue with just 1:03 on the clock. It wasn’t until the second period that the Blaze pulled a goal back, Luke Fulgham scoring a powerplay goal at 25:29, and then took a 2-1 lead as Ross Venus scored his second goal of the season. The Steelers soon levelled the scores again however, Rob Dowd finding the back of the net at 27:27. At 38:42 they took the lead again, as Neil Clark netted his 21st goal of the season on the powerplay. In the third period the Blaze had no answers, and the Steelers scored another two goals, first from Player-Coach Ben Simon at 44:59, and then an empty-net goal from Derek Campbell at 59:53. The Steelers and SSSC have a Fan Forum with new owner Paul Ragan, which will be held at the Holiday Inn, Rotherham, on Thursday January 6th, 7:30pm. The whole team will be in attendance, and tickets are available from the SSSC (visit www.thesssc.co.uk, or e-mail desk@ thesssc.co.uk for further details) priced at £2 each. The Steelers’ next home game is on January 12th at the Motorpoint Sheffield Arena. Tickets are available from the Arena Box Office (0114 256 56 56). SSSC members save £1 on an adult ticket on production of a valid SSSC membership card (one card per ticket).

box which the Silkmen were forced to turn behind for a corner. Newey sent in a cross from the following set-piece but Fenton looped his header narrowly over the frame of the goal. With the Silkmen defending solidly the Millers were struggling to fashion any chances, but Marcus Marshall’s industrious run just before the half-hour mark allowed the Millers to take the lead in spectacular fashion. Marshall used clever feet to keep the ball in play deep in his own half. The midfielder went on a mazy run up the right wing and left Silkmen left-back Izak Reid sprawling on the floor before feeding Adam Le Fondre. The striker swung in an instant cross which hung perfectly for Jason Taylor to meet with a bullet header. His attempt flew beyond the outstretched hands of Jose Veiga and nestled into the top corner in front of the travelling Millers fans. With five minutes to play before the break the Silkmen had a penalty claim turned down after Chalmers drilled a diagonal ball towards onrushing striker Barnett. Newey tangled inside the box with the forward bearing down on goal but the referee awarded a goal-kick as the ball dribbled over the byline to the dismay of the incredulous home fans. It proved the last real chance in a toughly contested first half with Ronnie Moore’s men leading into the interval. Macclesfield continued to work hard in the second period as they chased for an equaliser.A long throw from the left by Chalmers caused mayhem in the Millers box.The ball was only cleared as far as Hamza Bencherif on the edge of the area but the midfielder stabbed his effort through the crowd and wide of the target. Chalmers continued to provide quality from dead ball situations and crossed a deep freekick onto the head of Nat Brown. The centre-half rose well to nod down for Bencherif but Jason

Taylor was on hand in a defensive capacity this time to block the shot. Arsenal loanee Mark Randall was introduced 20 minutes into the second half in place of Will Atkinson as Ronnie Moore looked to freshen up the midfield. Macclesfield continued to control the possession as they pushed for a goal but Rotherham looked happy to shepherd the Silkmen’s forward play and captain Fenton especially dominated in the air to stifle the attack. Powerhouse striker Ricky Sappleton came on to offer a new threat to the Millers’ rearguard but it was Rotherham who nearly scored the second just moments later.A quick break down the left flank eventually broke down when the ball found its way to Tonge inside the box.Le Fondre eventually regained possession and fed Randall but the midfielder ballooned his shot over the bar. The Millers were being forced to work hard by an industrious Macclesfield side but Rotherham’s quality shone through as they doubled their lead in the closing stages.Newey’s corner was knocked down by Johnny Mullins for his defensive partner Fenton to stab home to open his account for the season. With the game entering stoppage time Macclesfield carved a late chance through Colin Daniel.A headed clearance fell to the midfielder 20 yards from goal who controlled with his thigh and unleashed a volley in one motion but the strike dipped over the bar. The Millers held on in the latter stages to keep a clean sheet in a performance that required plenty of toil to maintain their perfect record in 2011. Rotherham: Warrington; Tonge, Fenton, Mullins, Newey, Marshall, Law, J.Taylor, Atkinson (Randall 64), R.Taylor (Pope 77), Le Fondre. Subs (not used): Annerson, Harrison, Warne, Ashworth, Ellison.

BLADES GAIN LAST GASP DERBY POINT MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

Rob Kozluk was the unlikely hero - smashing in a late injury-time equaliser as Micky Adams picked up his first point as United boss. The recalled defender netted in the sixth of seven minutes of added time to give United a much-needed point. It was only his third career goal and his first at Bramall Lane. Daniel Bogdanovic had pulled a goal back on 86 minutes after former Blade Billy Sharp had scored twice for Doncaster, who had Dennis Souza sent off. Adams was forced into five changes with injuries and suspensions ravaging the squad he has inherited. Argentinean defender Parrino was given his full debut, slotting in at right-back, whilst Simonsen, Montgomery, Bartley and Kozluk returned to the starting line up. Britton and Calve dropped to the bench after picking up injuries on Saturday and they were joined by four homegrown prospects, James, Slew, Harriott and 17-year-old goalkeeper, Long. The new manager was formally introduced to the Lane faithful just before kick-off and he was afforded a rapturous welcome. Once the action was underway it soon became clear that he had again opted for a 4-4-2 formation, with Kozluk at left-back and Ertl remaining in central defence. Most of the early intent came from the visitors and Simonsen had to be alert with just three minutes gone. Hayter’s left-wing corner was flicked on at the near post and it appeared that Bartley forced his own goalkeeper into a point-blank save. Sharp fired well over from an O’Connor cross and then a free-kick and the rebound, from Coppinger and Lockwood, were both blocked. For United, Evans was off target with two efforts in quick succession and then at the other end, Oster curled a 30-yard free-kick over the crossbar. Doncaster’s Souza and Kozluk - former Barnsley team-mates - were first two players in the book, for separate crude challenges, whilst as the half wore on United began to force the visitors back. A couple of long Kozluk throws caused problems and from one it appeared as though Cresswell was being held but referee Bates waved play on. Kozluk returned to defensive duties to make two timely blocks, whilst Sharp was ready to celebrate when he clipped the ball past Simonsen on 39 minutes but a linesman’s flag had already been raised. Late in the half Cresswell went close on two occasions. Under pressure from O’Connor, he headed a Yeates cross wide and then just failed to get on the end of Ward’s threaded pass. Both teams were unchanged for the start of the second period and it was another Kozluk throw that immediately caused problems for the visitors but Yeates was unable to get enough power on a shot. On 51 minutes, United came close to taking the lead. Evans linked up with Ward before

hammering a shot which Sullivan saved ahead of his defence clearing the loose ball. The Welsh striker had a better chance four minutes later when he got beyond the Rovers defence to get on the end of Simonsen’s clearance but his header, with only Sullivan to beat, lacked power and was easy for the goalkeeper. Evans was certainly in the thick of the action in the second half and he involved again on 58 minutes when he was unceremoniously clattered into by Souza. The Brazilian defender obviously hadn’t learned from his first half challenge on Yeates and picked up a second yellow card before trudging from the field. Doncaster quickly made a change, throwing on another defender, but on a rare attack the visitors accepted the offer to open the scoring. With 66 minutes gone, Coppinger was allowed the time and space to deliver from the left and SHARP took a steadying touch before sidefooting past Simonsen. Adams’ first change was Britton for Ward and the United players were irritated when no penalty was awarded when Montgomery’s cross was blocked by O’Connor. The frustration grew moments later when referee Bates did award Rovers a spotkick. There was doubt whether Kozluk’s aerial challenge on Coppinger was actually in the box, but the penalty was awarded and SHARP blasted past Simonsen. Evans knocked down Ertl’s cross but Cresswell fired over on the turn. It was the latter’s last action as he left the field moments later holding his ribs. Bogdanovic was brought on to add late fire power. Referee Bates once again incensed the Blades players when O’Connor again appeared to block a Montgomery shot with his arm. Montgomery’s left-foot shot forced a save from Sullivan as the game entered the final ten minutes and then a Bartley error almost handed Hayter a goal. Academy player Harriott was introduced for the last five minutes and he was involved as United pulled a goal back on 87 minutes. He laid off to Kozluk, whose cross was nodded down by Evans for BOGDANOVIC to beat Sullivan from close range. The celebrations were muted as United attempted to restart as quickly as possible. Yeates, now on the left, saw an effort blocked by Chambers and then another held by Sullivan as the clock ticked around to 90 minutes. However, the Blades, now with Bartley forward, were buoyed by the fourth official announcing seven minutes of injury-time. Another Kozluk throw was only half-cleared and Montgomery sliced a shot wide. The old head of Sullivan was slowing down play at every opportunity but he held a late header from Britton after Bartley had flicked on yet another Kozluk throw. Sullivan comfortably saved a Yeates shot but the goalkeeper could do little about United’s leveller in the sixth minute of added time. He was punished for his timewasting antics when Bartley caused carnage from Montgomery’s cross and the unlikely figure of KOZLUK appeared to hammer a volley into the net at the Kop end. It was his third career goal - all for United - and his first at Bra-

mall Lane! The final whistle sounded soon afterwards with Rovers wondering how they had managed to squander the chance of a first ever league double over the Blades. Blades: Simonsen, Montgomery, Ertl, Evans, Yeates, Williamson (Harriott 85), Cresswell (Bogdanovic 78), Ward (Britton 72), Kozluk, Bartley, Parrino. Unused: Calve, Long, James, Slew. ADAMS - THE VERDICT GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk

Micky Adams watched his new team snatch a last gasp draw against Doncaster and immediately praised his players and the supporters for combining to provide the lift-off required to overcome a two goal deficit: “I thought the supporters were great. They gave Alan Cork and myself a great reception which we both appreciate, and then in the game they really made some noise - when they are like that there is nobody like them. “If they can keep supporting us like that, if the players can show the same confidence, and if we can get one or two bodies in, I am convinced that we will not be one of the teams that goes down.” Goalless at the break, United had every reason to believe that they could go on and win but the sending-off of Rovers’ Dennis Souza had the wrong effect for the Blades: “We started a bit nervously, I though, particularly in possession, and credit to Doncaster because they passed the ball around nicely. At half-time I told the lads that I couldn’t decide whether they were a short-ball team or a long ball team, and that whatever it was they had to decide. “From then on we got to grips with things, played particularly and were the better side - in fact, I was shocked when Doncaster went ahead after the red card. “The sending-off changed the game but we got sloppy and didn’t do defensively what we had done well in the first-half; if you give people time and space in the penalty-area you will be punished. “But we showed great character to keep going and to hit back, and I thought that we deserved our point because the lads showed pride in the shirt. I enjoyed it in the end and celebrated the equaliser like a fan, but I would rather us not give two goals away in the first place.” The new boss was relieved that the draw put a stop to a run of three successive defeats: “When a run like that stretches

NEW YEAR, NEW MANAGER, NEW HOPE! BLADES-MAD by Paul Holland

The new 2011 year starts with a new man at the helm of Sheffield United; Micky Adams. His first job is to ensure Championship football is to be played at the Lane next season. Our festive fixtures proved that we were no scrooges, gifting our opponent’s victories; conceding in each game in the 90th minute – whilst the Blades are lacking considerably due to injuries and suspensions it’s become very clear that the back four needs adjusting. In the three games over Xmas and New Year United have leaked 11 goals whilst scoring six themselves, it’s quite positive to learn that we are finding the back of the net but worrying that we are unable to keep clean sheets. With the January transfer market now open we hope that Mr. Adams will spend any cash available wisely and will start by bolstering the back line, without a solid defence we will sink faster than Wednesday! I write this piece prior to our home game with Doncaster Rovers and hopefully we’ll have come home happy; but the new boss will have a reprieve this weekend with the prospect of Aston Villa in the FA Cup. I doubt that many united fans will be interested if we were to be eliminated at this stage of the competition, especially as we are classed as the underdogs – it would be nice to see us in round four but our battle against relegation is worth a lot more. All Blades hope that Mr. Adams and his assistant Alan Cork does a good job at the Lane but I do hope myself that the fans won’t turn as quick on this management regime as they did under Robson and Blackwell.

to five or six games it can really take some stopping so it was pleasing to get on the board, especially in such dramatic fashion. “Comebacks like that are what this club is all about, and I well remember so many last minute goals being scored when Neil Warnock was manager which says loads about the character in a side.” During his pre-match welcome on the pitch Adams went to the Kop end to applaud the supporters and made a T sign which he explained after the game: “I was just asking them to give me the time I will need to make a success of this job. I so much want to do it for them but it really can’t happen overnight and I want them to be patient, stay with me and help me as they did the team today - they didn’t get on our backs when we went behind which was a great sign.”

BLOOD ISNʼT THICKER THAN WATER FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton

Blood isn’t thicker than water Once again former Sheffield United employee Billy Sharp came back to haunt his “beloved” Blades with a brace that almost saw Micky Adams lose his first home game in charge. His efforts against the club he supported as a boy had set up a repeat of the 2-0 score line recorded in the reverse fixture at the Keepmoat earlier in the season, before a late show salvaged a point for the home team. Much is said about loyalty in football, particularly when players return to their former clubs, but this discussion is even more pronounced when the player in question comes up against his boyhood club. Billy Sharp has now registered three goals against Sheffield United this season, something that clearly means a lot to him. You could argue that he wasn’t given a fair crack of the whip in his time at the Lane, or you could say his return of just 8 goals in 51 outings wasn’t good enough. Coincidentally the Sheffield born striker has now appeared 51 times for Doncaster, but registered a much more impressive 25 goals in that time. Back at the Keepmoat in October, Sharp’s jubilation at scoring was muted to an extent and directed sarcastically towards his manager’s pre-match remarks that when not on form he is just a ‘Fat Lad from Sheffield’. On Monday his elation was not quite as reserved, as he tore away in celebration at putting his boyhood club to the sword. Many Blades have been up in arms about this, but for me it just shows he can’t have ever cared about the club as much as was claimed. I know I could never celebrate a goal against the Blades in the way he did, no matter how much abuse I’d received from Sheffield United followers. This hopefully will allow us to draw a line under his association with the club and focus on our own players, such as Ched Evans who with seven goals this term is just three behind the “super” Billy Sharp.

TERRIERS EDGE OUT OWLS MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

A wonder goal from Anthony Pilkington proved the difference as Wednesday went down 1-0 to Huddersfield in a lively Yorkshire derby. Pilkington struck a delightful drive past Nicky Weaver in the first half to separate the White Rose rivals, who fought out an entertaining contest at the Galpharm Stadium. Mark Beevers and Tommy Miller went close to an equaliser but the breakthrough just wouldn’t come for Wednesday, who were in action for the first time since the middle of December. The Owls made three changes for the live Sky TV clash, with Jon Otsemobor, James O’Connor and Neil Mellor all returning to the starting lineup to face a Huddersfield team out to arrest a mini-slide over the holiday period. Lee Clarke’s side missed out on the chance to leapfrog

Wednesday in the League 1 table, losing two of their three festive fixtures. The Owls meanwhile saw their holiday calendar ruined by the weather and were almost caught cold inside the first minute, when Kevin Kilbane sent Lee Novak through on goal but Weaver was off his line sharply to divert the danger. The visitors then survived a penalty appeal when Huddersfield claimed that Clinton Morrison handled in the area but referee Mr Oliver waved away the appeals. It was an action-packed opening and Wednesday came close with their first attempt on goal. Gary Teale launched an accurate corner into the box and Beevers powered in a goalbound header that Lee Peltier cleared off the line underneath the crossbar. The Terriers responded with Pilkington forcing a fine diving save from Weaver before Jermaine Johnson scuffed wide at the other end after linking up well with Morrison. Peltier then tested Weaver with a firm header as the

rantic derby pace continued and it was only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken. That moment duly arrived on 27 minutes and in spectacular style too. There seemed little on for Pilkington when he picked up possession on the angle 25 yards from goal but the midfielder struck a wonderful curling strike that beat Weaver all ends up and nestled into the top corner. Wednesday sought an immediate response and were thwarted on the halfhour mark when keeper Alex Smithies sprung to palm Miller’s free kick over the bar. Smithies went one better, though, just before half time, getting a strong hand on a Neil Mellor shot to push the ball onto the post when the striker was favourite to score. Wednesday started the second period on the front foot and had the ball in the net minutes after the resumption but Morrison’s hooked volley was ruled out for offside. That scare seemed only to spark Huddersfield into life and although their attacking play lacked the purpose of the

first half, the Terriers looked effective and in control. The Owls relied more and more on the counter and Mellor wasn’t too far away with a rasping drive that flew the wrong side of the upright. But Huddersfield continued to have the edge and Weaver came to Wednesday’s rescue ten minutes from time, diving low to keep out a fierce shot from Scott Arfield. The visitors did up the ante in the closing stages in pursuit of an equaliser but the Huddersfield defence held firm to keep Wednesday at bay and this time inch above them in the table.

ALAN FRUSTRATED GAFFERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk

Wednesday boss Alan Irvine was left massively frustrated after the 1-0 loss against Huddersfield on Monday at the Galpharm Stadium. A stunning first half strike from Anthony Pilkington proved the difference in the lively Yorkshire derby but Irvine was disappointed by the fashion the goal was conceded. He said: “From an observer’s point of view it was a great goal from Pilkington but we knew he was capable of that kind of quality and it was something we had identified and worked on before the game so that was bitterly disappointing. “But we had our chances in both halves and I felt we should have come away today with at least a point from the game.” Despite that first half setback, Wednesday did have chances in front of goal with Mark Beevers and Neil Mellor both going close. Clinton Morrison had the ball in the net after the break but the linesman’s flag was raised to add to Wednesday’s frustrations. Irvine added: “It was an open game but it was always going to be. I played as much of an attacking side as I could and with the chances we had we should have come away with something. “In a game that is going to be as tight as this one, you have to take them.” “Other teams have been playing games over the Christmas period and my big fear was that we would be soft but we weren’t so I was pleased from that point of view but of course angry by the goal we conceded.”

ANGST GROWS AFTER ALANʼS WOES FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob

So a moment of semiexquisite skill is the difference between two promotion challengers. Whilst dipping my rather ugly big toe into the pool of Wednesday orientated opinion, I sense a growing amount of angst against Alan Irvine. Now I don’t have a tattoo of our manager on my body, nor am I boot stomping and calling for his head on a plate. Monday’s tussle with Huddersfield (crazily described by Sky as ‘The White Rose Derby’) didn’t worry me that much. In fact, it could’ve easily gone either way. I don’t blame Irvine for the loss. We created chances and defended fairly well. A manager can put in place systems and tactics to make these two things happen. He can’t make Mellor take his chances or Morrison hold his run for a split second. Unfortunately for me, yet very fortunate for all Wednesdayites, I’m not in control of Alan Irvine’s future. My man of 2010, Milan Mandaric is. Whether Mandaric gets rid of Irvine or not will be his first significant footballing move. If he is going to do it, he needs to do it now so the new man can stamp his influence on the team before the January transfer window slams shut (it never seems to close quietly in the media’s eyes, does it?) Personally, I don’t think he will unless there is a catastrophic next few games. For one, who is available? I’d like to think we’re not as blinkered as some to expect Sean O’Driscoll to stroll out of a successful project such as Donny. Nor do I think any realistic target will do any better than Irvine. But, you never know. Mandaric might just have a trick up his expensively tailored sleeve.

PARISH COUNCIL DIG YOU OUT What a Winter to remember or not The Parish Council and staff took emergency action to help the residents of Killamarsh when the County Council failed to respond to the extraordinary winter

weather conditions. Just before and over the Christmas period the Parish Council had 22 tons of grit delivered to the Sports Centre and then by hand the council filled

over 200 seperate bags and delivered them to the new great bins, of which there were 18 in total. The council also braved the arctic conditions and

enrolled local residents lucky enough to own 4 x 4 vehicles to deliver the grit and distribute it over dangerous paths and roads by hand.

Arrows bounce into Killamarsh with successful bid in 2011 The Arrows Basketball Clubmark Club have been awarded a Sport England Small Grant of £6,311 to develop the sport of basketball in and around the Killamarsh Sports Centre in 2011. The Killamarsh Arrows Scheme is the result of a positive partnership between Sport England, England Basketball, the Arrows Basketball Club and the Killamarsh Parish Council Sports Centre Management. The Scheme will involve increased opportunities to learn the skills of basketball and to use them in competition in a variety of forms at Killamarsh Sports Centre. The Arrows Club was formed in 1991 and has run teams in National Leagues ever since. In the September of 2010 the Arrows began playing at Killamarsh Sports Centre at levels of; U10, U11, U12, U14, U16, U18 and Senior Men. The close partnership between the Arrows and the Parish Council through the Sports Centre Management team has seen many new visitors to Killamarsh Sports Centre from Kent to Hartlepool - in fact the first visitors were a touring team from the USA back in September. These awards will be vital in supporting the grass – root development of this volunteer run club. The Arrows have ambitious shared plans for the development of basketball in the area and this successful bid will help turn those plans into reality. The Sports Centre will be carrying in 2011 information of all the new sessions and opportunities to learn new skills, compete and see basketball in 2011. The aim is to reach at least 300 young people in 2011. The Senior Men play Mansfield on Saturday 29th January at 5.15pm in a local derby while the U16 and U18’s will be in action at 1pm and 3pm.

The Marketplace at Crystal Peaks Special Feature

crystalpeaks shopping mall and retail park

A hidden gem in the heart of the Crystal Peaks Shopping centre is the Market Place. It offers support independent traders and the local economy, and at the same time to bag themselves a real bargain! From fresh meat and vegetables, to haircuts and cosmetics, snacks and hot meals, clothing, craft and gifts, something for your pets, computer supplies, carpets and curtains, electrical goods – even a Post Office – the local shopper can find virtually anything they may require from over fifty individual stallholders all offering keen prices, personal service and a friendly smile! Colin Dams, a former Tesco store manager - and now the proud owner of Peak Fruit and Veg – typifies the spirit of the stallholders; “I am proud when people describe my stall as a ‘real’ fruit and veg shop – customers can ‘prod and poke’ to ensure they are buying produce at its freshest and best, newly delivered from the markets.” And if you’re shopping for the Sunday joint – or any other meal – check out Morleys Butchers on Stall 6. Pete and his team offer a traditional butchery service, with fresh meat cut from the joint to suit your needs, and expert advice on how best to cook and prepare your purchase. Many of the stalls are manned by the proprietors themselves – guaranteeing the personal touch often lacking in other retail environments. Mr. Rhodes can be found behind the counter in Timezone – and not only can he advise on the purchase of a range of watches, clocks and jewellery, he offers a bespoke range of magnetic health bracelets, and

will personally repair your faulty watch or clock – often on a “while you wait” basis. If you feel the need for a New Year makeover, why not visit Bev Kipling, who will style your hair in Director’s Cut, offering both ladies’ and gents salons, and will also give your feet a treat in her latest stall alongside – Sole Sensations – which offers the latest and most popular of pedicures, Fish Reflexology – an army of fish nibbling away at hard and cracked skin! Bev tells us more about the spirit in the Market Place – “We are like a family – many of us have been here for years, and we are proud of what we offer to our shoppers. A lot of customers have been shopping with us since we opened, and we are grateful for their loyalty.” Markets in Sheffield have a long history stretching back to 1296, when Edward I granted a charter to Thomas de Furnival, Lord of the Manor of Sheffield. In 1899 Sheffield City Council purchased the markets and rights from the then Duke of Norfolk, since when they have remained the property and responsibility of the Council. In recent years over £2 million pounds has been spent in refurbishing the hall to enhance the shopping experience and present a light, modern and attractive environment for the shoppers and stallholders. The Market Place is open on Sundays, Bank Holidays and two late nights every week. Visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/ markets for details.

FAM TYP ILY ICAL CA RF RO M

ON LY £ 40! Probably every driver reading this has had the unpleasant experience of opening their curtains on a wet, wintry morning only to see the car leaning over to one side as a result of a very flat tyre! From sheer inconvenience, to the frustration of missing bits in the boot, to the outright danger of a high speed puncture on the motorway, the tyres on your car are a crucial matter for you and your family. Known now as “Pothole City”, Sheffield has for several years been voted the

home of the country’s worst roads, and the recent cuts in public budgets do not bode well for any immediate improvements in the situation. Fortunately, there is now a local company that can put you back in the driving seat! Darren Mills runs Sheffield’s only Puncturesafe franchise – an internationally recognised product which has developed a unique preventative solution to protect your

tyres from punctures.

children – the list is endless!

Developed and manufactured in the UK, Puncturesafe is a non-toxic, liquid polymer gel which is injected inside the tyre and helps to prevent flat tyres. It can be installed within minutes through the valve without even having to remove the wheels.

And Puncturesafe is not just for cars – caravans, bicycles, mobility scooters – in fact any type of pneumatic tyre can be protected.

Prior to undertaking the work, Darren carries a demonstration kit which explains the process step by step. Puncturesafe offer a mobile service, whether at your home or workplace, and it typically takes less than twenty minutes to treat a full vehicle. There are innumerable circumstances in which Puncturesafe’s unique solution can be of benefit.

Darren stresses that the key is prevention – “The whole point is to stop the puncture from happening; we can’t do anything if it already has, but we can guarantee that it won’t happen again.” “I have tried and tested it myself; I honestly believe in the product we supply.”

It is ideal for LPG drivers, who are unable to carry a spare tyre.

A single Puncturesafe treatment will last for the life of the tyre, and can also improve fuel economy and extend the life of the tyre.

It offers peace of mind – a son or daughter driving home from University, an elderly or disabled driver who faces the daily stress of potential problems, the worry of collecting small
