A drunk gets up from the bar and heads for the bathroom. A few minutes later, a loud, blood curdling scream is heard from the bathroom. A few minutes after that, another loud scream reverberates through the bar. The bartender goes into the bathroom to investigate why the drunk is screaming. “What’s all the screaming about in there? You’re scaring the customers!” “I’m just sitting here on the toilet and every time I try to flush, something comes up and squeezes the hell out of my testicles.” With that, the bartender opens the door, looks in and says...”You idiot! You’re sitting on the mop bucket!” Three nuns in church on a hot day decide to remove their robes because of the heat. Not an unusual habit on a hot day. So about a half hour later, the door bell rings while their robes are slumped over pews clear across the huge chapel. They ask who it is. “The blind man,” a voice replies. The three nuns decide to simply open the door because the man is blind. He walks in, looks at the nuns and says, “Nice breasts! Where do you want me to install these blinds?”

round-up by stuart renton

British sci-fi shows are like buses, you wait ages for one to come along and then two appear on the same evening. Last week saw sci-fi drama, Outcasts on BBC1 and supernatural chiller, Bedlam, on Sky Living. Another gritty sci fi drama is quite unwelcome, and I have to wonder exactly how rubbish like Outcasts manages to reach our screens. With a slew of talented writers out there, you’d think BBC execs could take their pick of great new shows, yet the first episode of Outcasts was so dreary and uninspired - I’m surprised it got made at all. Actually, I’m not. Remember Demons (consider yourself fortunate if you don’t)? Demons set the standard for low quality television, yet Outcasts manages to lower it in spectacular fashion. The first episode tells the story of a group of colonists who have set up life on another world – and that’s about it, really. I can’t say too much without spoilers - not that there’s much to spoil – for what story there was should have been left to a conversation between characters rather than subjecting us sixty minutes of pointless drivel that’s little more than backstory. Overall, Outcasts tries hard to be something its not, which is cool, stylish and gritty, and is left looking amateurish with wooden characters and pointless plot points. Sci-fi should be interesting. It should tell cool stories and feature exciting battles on alien worlds, but there’s none of that here, although there is a scene where one instantly forgettable character slides down a gravelly slope – excitement! Who thinks up this nonsense? The Next Time teaser may show some improvement with the suggestion of aliens and the fresh addition of some new characters, but really, with a foundation this ropey, I’m not going to go back for a second helping. Outcasts is an abysmally written, acted and conceived piece of what can only be described as sci-fi trash. BBC, you can do much better. Conversely, supernatural drama, Bedlam, saw its premiere last week, and, for the six or so people who actually watch UK Living, this was an unexpected treat. Cashing in on the Most Haunted and Being Human crowd, this show sees a group of twenty somethings living in a converted asylum, and having to deal with all the ghosts and malevolent critters that refuse to abandon their old haunt. Will Young is brilliant as Ryan, the geeky genius whose brother died from drowning a year ago, and the other three cast members give equally decent performances. But be warned: this is absolutely nothing original - although, in this age of endless remakes and book to movie tie-ins, what is? It’s Paranormal Activity meets The Ring, but unlike Outcasts, Bedlam sets down believable foundations for a TV show with characters that are genuinely likeable. My one gripe: who calls a luxury flat complex built on the site of an old asylum, Bedlam Heights? I mean, these days it’s GaGa Mansions or JLS Towers, isn’t it? If you like spooky shows where faces loom out at you through the mist (no I’m not talking about doing the dirty in the Pond’s Forge sauna) then check out Bedlam. It’s just a shame it’s on Sky Living as this show will go down faster than a chocolate condom at a Weight Watchers Christmas party. And that’s a shame as BBC1 should have picked up this rather excellent show. Check it out: the power of Christ compels you!

DOLLY PARTON Legendary Singer, Actress, Songwriter and The Queen of Country, Dolly Parton announces new UK tour dates as part of a huge World Tour planned for 2011 and to coincide she is planning to release ‘Better Day’, an album full of new material on her own Dolly Records, worldwide! ‘Better Day’, will feature twelve new compositions from Dolly that have never been heard before. The world will be delighted when the Smoky Mountain Songbird takes the stage and shows us exactly why she is such a legend. The World tour hits the UK on Saturday 20 August, culminating in Sheffield on 12th September at the Motorpoint Arena. With hits like “9 To 5”, “Here You Come Again”, “Jolene”, and of course the incomparable “I Will Always Love You”, audiences are guaranteed to see the show of a lifetime. With all new sets, costumes and even new music from her forthcoming album ‘Better Day’ to be released later this year, it is sure to make an evening spent with Dolly Parton a night to remember. Her last two European tours sold out and extra dates were added to meet the phenomenal demand, so expect fans to snap these tickets up. Dolly says; “I had a great time when we were in Europe on the last Backwoods Barbie tour and I expect to have even more fun on the up and coming ‘Better Day Tour’. I’m really looking forward to this and I can’t wait to see all the fans again. We have a lot fun things for everybody ! Get ready cos here I come again!” Dolly Parton has written over 4,000 songs, had numerous number 1 hits and won countless Grammy, CMA and ACM awards, not to mention enough gold and platinum albums to make even the folks at “Tiffany’s” blush. Dolly saw a cherished dream become a reality in 1986 with the opening of her own theme park called Dollywood, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains. The state’s number one tourist attraction, Dollywood was selected by the theme park industry as one of the top three theme parks in the world in 2006 and recently won its 17 Brass ring awards and the coveted ‘Applause Award’ for Best Theme Park in the World.. Dolly Parton is the most honoured female country performer of all time. Achieving 25 RIAA certified gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards, she has had 25 songs reach number 1 on the Billboard Country charts, a record for a female artist. She has 41 career top 10 country albums, a record for any artist, and she has 110 career charted singles over the past 40 years. All-inclusive sales of singles, albums, hits collections, paid digital downloads and compilation usage during her Hall of Fame career have reportedly topped a staggering 100 million records world-wide. She has garnered 7 Grammy Awards, 10 Country Music Association Awards, 5 Academy of Country Music Awards, 3 American Music Awards and is one of only five female artists to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year Award. Yet with all of the national and international recognition given to her, Dolly Parton calls the bronze statue of her, which stands on the courthouse lawn in her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee, her “greatest honour, because it came from the people who know me.” Always dreaming and always looking forward, Dolly is busier than ever, working on various children’s projects, working on a new movie project and writing and recording, these projects are just a few of her many interests at the moment. The phenomenon of Dolly Parton continues to flourish, as she remains one of the World’s true superstars don’t miss this tour. Tickets priced, £67.50, £60.00 and £50.00 (booking fee may apply) go on general sale at 9am on Friday 11th February, in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarena. co.uk

A Near Death Experience I did a psychic reading for a lady who came to see me because she needed an explanation of her near death experience. PROBABATES & DECEASED ESTATES Solicitor Katy Burgin of Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors answers questions on dealing with a deceased person’s estate.

My father has died and I have to deal with his estate. I don’t know where to start. What is Probate? Probate is the term commonly used to mean applying for the right to deal with a deceased person’s estate. Someone will need to apply for ‘grant of representation’ to enable them to deal with the person’s affairs. The legalities vary depending on whether or not the deceased left a Will. If the deceased left a Will. Executors will be named in the Will and they will be responsible for carrying out the wishes of the deceased. The executors have to apply to the probate registry for ‘grant of probate’ which is a legal document confirming that the executors have the legal right to deal with the deceased’s affairs. This document is required to deal with the person’s property, finances and possessions. If the deceased did not leave a Will. If someone dies intestate a relative will need to apply to the probate registry for ‘grant of letters of administration’ which gives them the legal authority to deal with the person’s estate. Which relative is entitled to apply is set down by law.

less than £5000. If the deceased held shares or substantial savings or a property then grant is usually required. What is involved in dealing with a larger estate? Dealing with the administration of an estate can be time consuming, depending on the size and complexity of the person’s affairs. The deceased’s assets and liabilities need to be ascertained, their debts settled and their position calculated for income tax and inheritance tax. Assets such as savings, investments, shares, property and insurance policies all need to be taken into account to enable the estate to be dealt with properly and the assets distributed to beneficiaries. When a loved one dies, dealing with the paperwork involved can be daunting and quite complex. A solicitor can deal with some or all of this for you if you wish. Our experienced team can remove this burden from you during this difficult time and ensure that the wishes of the deceased are carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible. Contact us to speak to one of our solicitors who will be happy to assess your situation and provide you with an estimate for the work to be carried out. For further advice call 0114 276 6166 or visit www.norriewaite.co.uk to find your local branch.

Is Probate (or grant of representation) always required? In certain circumstances it is not necessary to apply for grant of representation. You should always seek legal advice to ascertain if this applies to you and to avoid any legal problems as a result of mistakenly not applying for grant. As a general rule a grant is not required when everything the deceased owned was held in joint names with their spouse and the spouse is the sole beneficiary. It is also not usually necessary to apply for grant when the deceased has an estate of low value, for example a bank account containing

LIVE REVIEW by KT Evans Who?: Scenester Awards When?: Soyo - 31/1/11

SOYO Mondays have rapidly gained a reputation as being a top notch night, showcasing a variety of local bands and musicians. The Scenester Awards last Monday therefore had, it’s fair to say, quite a lot to live up to…good thing it was one of the best nights yet then ey! Hosted by the online magazine which launched in early 2010 as well as BBC Raw Talent’s Ian Hodgson, the night kicked off with a live acoustic performance by Sheffield band The Cartel’s frontman DT. Preceding this, the first award; Best Album the Sheffield Scenester has reviewed, which was won by La Folie’s ‘Risus Sardonicus’ along with the Top 3 EP’s which, although a close call, were awarded to Jackson Caged, The Salvo and Feelix. Picking up the pace, the indie pop quartet Risky Heroes took to the stage to hype up the already packed venue, who although not winners on the night, were nominated for three awards; Best single, EP and live band. Other high energy live performances on the night came from The Ratells aswell as Elephant Keys, who snapped up an award for their guitar driven new single ‘Fashion Queen’ along with Chesterfield’s Ruberlaris and Violet May both winning an award for their new releases. Acoustic soloist Ian Britt was commended for his passion to the Sheffield Music Scene by winning Best Solo Artist following the award for Best Vocalist the Sheffield Scenester has reviewed won by Tom Hogg. Arguably the most notable award of the night, or let’s face it, one they all want to win, Best Live Band had over twenty nominations but crowned Dead Like Harry, Alvarez Kings and Driftrun victorious. The Weston Party Children’s Hospital Charity Gig was awarded Best Event whilst Soundclash snapped up Best Regular Unsigned Act Night. A jam packed night, fuelling Sheffield’s diverse and unique music scene, Sheffield Scenester put on a night worthy of a good old thumbs up.

SATURDAYʼS FRIDAY NIGHT FEVER

It’s time…time for Sheffield to get glam. This Friday will see front runners in ultimate cheese ‘The Saturdays’ inject glitz and glamour to the masses as they embark on the next leg of their current 17 date ‘Headlines’ UK tour. Short skirts, tick. False eyelashes, tick. Sky scraper heels, tick…expect nothing less from one of Britain’s favourite girl group, consisting of Frankie, Vanessa, Una, Molly and Rochelle who ‘can’t wait to see our fans up and down the country…we couldn’t be more excited.’ Since the formation of The Saturday’s, the girls have racked up seven impressive top ten hits, were the face of Impulse and are even set to appear in their very own ITV 2 Documentary ‘The Saturdays 24/7.’ Not bad to say they have only been together for just over three years. Gracing the Urwin Mitchell Oval Hall, doors open at 18:30pm with the show kicking off at 19:30pm. Although all general admission tickets have sold out, VIP Hospitality tickets are still available, which includes the best seats in the house, a three course dinner and a bottle of champagne to get the night going. But at £74.00 a ticket, you may need to ‘have to sit down with your ego.’ Excuse the pun. Support for The Saturdays is provided by hot new Trio Twenty Twenty. This 3 piece is made up of two brothers, Sam & Jack and their friend Sonny who began playing together a couple of years ago and recorded some tunes for Myspace which quickly gained them a loyal following and some great supports with the likes of Saving Aimee and Go Audio. However such was the demand for the band they soon started headlining their own sell out 1000 capacity shows in the likes of Manchester, Newcastle and London and had two sold out nights at Glasgow’s King Tuts. Kerrang Video of The Week and summer festival appearances with names like JLS, Calvin Harris & Tinchy Stryder saw the band cross over to a huge pop audience and the fanbase swelled with teenage girls. exhibits and now he’s back to play in Sheffield….. Hello Sunshine. The Super Furry Animals front man is, for lack of a better phrase, a bit of a legend. The Furries psychedelic pop has always been playful and experimental, and they’ve managed to do it without reeking of the ‘we’re so cool…honestly’ attitude that comes hand in hand with a lot of experimental music. Making music for Rhys is more like an adventure to find something different, and it’s his love of music and experimentation that shines through when you listen to his records. Not much has changed in 20-years, new release Shark Ridden Waters from forthcoming album Hotel Shampoo is amongst Rhys best work, and like all his releases, refreshingly different. With such a diverse catalogue to choose from, it’s hard to pick the highlights, 2007’s Candylion still stands out, but with Hotel Shampoo Rhys will again be taking us on a trippy and tuneful journey that you won’t be able to stop humming for weeks. In the music industry ‘the box’ is there so that musicians like Rhys can break out of it, if this man made an album with a cheese grater and a spoon you know he would still make it surprisingly catchy. Rhys’ most recent release (Tony Da Gatorra Vs. Gruff Rhys, The Terror of Cosmic Loneliness) saw him record with a Brazilian VCR repairman and tour the album dressed as a power ranger, so yeah Rhys is anything but unoriginal, which is why going to watch him play on Valentines day should be a win/ win situation for all those attending, If only for the fact that all Rhys’ songs are incredibly catchy. Hotel Shampoo is out on 11th Feb, Gruff Rhys will play the Memorial Hall on Feb 14th, so bring a loved one or potential squeeze, it could be the most weirdly romantic thing you do this year. RELEASES

By Dave P.

artist: Chase & Status album: No More Idols Released: Out Now Drum and Bass is experiencing a chart-crossover renaissance at the moment, Sub Focus, High Contrast, Danny Byrd, London Elektricity and genre flag bearers Pendulum, amongst others, have all enjoyed extended airplay and chart success over the last couple of years. London duo Chase & Status however may slowly pull ahead of the chasing pack, with their latest album swimming more into the mainstream than any of their contemporaries have previously dared. Back in the day C&S thrashed it up hardcore D&B style with singles such as ‘Druids’ & ‘Judgement (Informer)’, but they then embarked on mission of collaboration and this is where they managed to reach a wider audience. ‘Pieces’ featuring Plan B and then ‘Against all odds’ featuring Kano, which both featured on their first album ‘More than alot’, gained Radio 1 airplay and minor chart success. This second album is a collab-fest so i’m sensing C&S have decided introducing third parties is the magic formula for them gaining mainstream notoriety. Out of the fifteen tracks on ‘No More Idols’ only two see C&S flying solo and these are the only two tracks I consider to be straight up Drum and Bass. The minibus of guest artists that rolled into the studio contains high flyers such as Tinnie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal, CeeLo Green, White Lies and C&S’s old pal Plan B. The album is a real mix of genres ranging from the aggressively menacing first single ‘Let You Go’, dubstep flavoured ‘Blind Faith’ which charted in the top 10 last week, the indie enthused ‘Embrace’ and grime peppered numbers such as ‘Hitz’ and ‘Heavy’ which feature Tinnie Tempah and Dizzee respectively. The wide range of stylings, tempos and collaborators does make the album seem like a compilation more than an artist album at times but every track brings something exciting to the table and makes for a solid and enthralling release. Score: 8/10 Watch out for: The aptly named closing track ‘End Credits’ with Plan B & the bass drop on ‘Heavy’ which first appears around 47 Seconds.

GARY MOORE DIES AT THE AGE OF 58

Legendary Thin Lizzy Guitarist Gary Moore has sadly passed away whilst on holiday on the Costa del Sol in Spain, at the time of going to press a cause of death had not been released. One of the most celebrated guitarists of his generation, Belfast-born Moore was known for his highly skilled Blues, Hard Rock and Jazz music. Starting young at the age of 16, Moore joined Skid Row in 1969 which featured Phil Lynott as frontman. He then went on to re-unite with Lynott when he joined Thin Lizzy in 1974. Afterwards Moore went on to enjoy a highly successful and wide ranging solo career with colaborations with artists such as BB King, George Harrison and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Founding member of Thin Lizzy Brian Downey stated “He will always be in my thoughts and prayers, and I just can’t believe he is gone.”

SOMETHING DODGY IS GOING ON

If you fancy something a little different this weekend why not get yourself down to an empty warehouse, located with a Victorian Museum, tooked away in a small Barnsley mining village and embrace some mid-ninties indie-pop? I know it sounds a bit off-beat but indie stalwarts Dodgy will belting out their Britpop classics down at Building 21 located within Elsecar Heritage centre this Friday. After playing in several incarnations previously Dodgy rode on the wave of the mid-nineties British guitar revolution, singles such as “Staying out for the Summer”, “If you’re thinking of Me” and UK number four hit “Good Enough” are still fondly wedged in the heads of those who grew up in the Britpop era. Good venue, great band and something a bit different for a Friday night. Support comes from local bands, Vanquish, The Glavins & Legal Friday.

Brighton Metalcore (the 146th genre of music I’ve now listen to on my way into work) band Architects return with their fourth studio album this month, The Here and Now. I’m going to admit it now that I know very little about Metalcore. The raspy, screaming vocal stylings of the genre have always been a bit too uncomfortable listening for me, but to be fair I’ve probably never given Metalcore a fair chance. This is the first full album of Metalcore I’ve ever listened to in full and to be honest I’ve loaded it onto my ipod and i’ll probably listen to it again. Intricate composition, heavy churning riffs, great technical moments and an overall high energy (weirdly enhanced by the vocal stylings I always tried to avoid) make TH&N an album worthy of praise even from a layman like myself, and there are softer moments and epic crescendos where vocalist Sam Carter can actually belt out a decent tune when he’s not trying to scare you senseless. “People in the know” seem to be stating this album reaches out to music fans not strictly confined to within the Metalcore scene, and although I can’t see myself jumping headlong into the moshpit I would like to thank Architects for enticing me to at least the edge of the dancefloor.

Artist: Dodgy + Support Venue: Building 21, Elsecar Heritage Centre Date: Friday 11th February Tickets: £12.50 - www.seetickets.com

Score: 6.5/10 Highlights: The “Sh*t your pants and fall off the treadmill” change of pace about 2:06 into track 5 ‘An Open letter to Myself’.

LIVE MUSIC WILL SEND HEART’S ALL A FLUTTER…

The existing analogue TV signal will be switched off region by region and the transmitters for this area will switch over THIS SUMMER! Switchover means that almost every household will be able to receive digital TV through their aerial* giving many people access to a wider choice of channels. Some homes will receive over 40 channels, whilst others may only receive 15 depending on where you live and what transmitter you receive your signal from! But don’t worry, if you still can’t get Freeview through your aerial, we can explain other ways of getting free to air digital television. It can all get a little confusing but please don’t worry, the experts at Williams Electrical shops have all the information you need to ensure you can keep watching your favourite programmes and maybe get some new ones as well! Don’t forget it’s not just analogue TV’s that will need upgrading or converting but recorders too. If you already have Freeview, check you know how to retune your TV or box – you’ll need to do it at both stages of switchover.

South Yorkshire’s highly accomplished concert pianist and composer of nearly 30 years, Dean Headland will give a rare and romantic in-person performance and create a special live concert atmosphere in the City of Sheffield next Monday, 14th February, with over 4 hours of non stop sophisticated special occasion “mood” music at popular Castle Market. The celebrated virtuosos from Doncaster becomes the musical accompaniment to a “St. Valentines Day” promotion and will help fashion up some ‘love amongst the aisles’ for shoppers and visitors alike. The bow tie and tails wearing melody devotee will play his very own exquisite style of popular, classical and fusion jazz - all blended into one - interwoven with warm romantic over tones. Love songs and irresistible movie themes from down the decades will expectantly capture the desire-d effect of the special day. Andy Ward, Markets General Manager, commented, “To add to the irresistible nature of the music we’ll be giving away 25 free red roses each and every hour to ‘loved up couples’, it promises to be a very emotional 4 hours!” He added, “Dean has acquired a high class reputation as a pianist of exceptional romantic and poetic expression through his many years of artistic playing. Plaudits and fans alike agree that Dean achieves his impact through subtlety and he values the beauty of tone. Thankfully for us he’s a noted exponent of the romantic repertoire. His interpretation and mastery of the piano can be summed up by one of his fans that said “with Dean you fall into the wonderous melodious chasm of the keyboard. I think it’ll be a great treat for music lovers everywhere, especially for Valentines Day so, if music be the food of love, play on.”

PREMIER LEAGUE GRAVY TRAIN TO HIT THE BUFFERS?

No-one had heard of a journeyman Belgian footballer called Jean Bosman – until his case in the European Court drove a bus through the transfer system. Step forward Julianne Kokott – one of the European Commission’s Advocate Generals, whose advice to the European Court of Justice threatens to have a similar explosive effect on the Premier League, with quite a lot of collateral damage for Sky TV thrown in. Quite simply, Ms Kokott has decided that Portsmouth publican Karen Murphy, who streams live TV through a legitimately purchased Greek satellite dish, has every right to do so under European Union Law, which prohibits territorial exclusivity agreements such as those operated between the Premier League and Sky TV. If this is upheld (and the Court upholds over 70% of their Advocate General’s opinions) then publicans up and down the land will be able to broadcast live football for a fraction of the current cost. What a bonus in these difficult times!

Shaun Whitaker of Intake Club, Doncaster, has been inundated with enquiries from the media as the campaign gathers momentum, with Look North and Calendar the latest to show an interest. Landlords, agents, artistes and clubs have been quick to back the campaign – now we need you, the customer, to help! for his new album “Gilbertsville” which will be released on 31 January 2011. The idea for the title was prompted by a photograph that was taken in Iowa by Gilbert’s brother Terry. Apparently the photograph shows a road sign that points to a town called Raymond, which is Gilbert’s real name, and also points to another town called Gilbertville. The album features 14 tracks with an interlude halfway through which will feature UK comedian Harry Hill reciting a short poem of Gilbert’s. Harry previously appeared in the promotional video for “Two’s Company (Three Is Allowed)”. The 14 tracks are made up of 13 new tracks that were recorded in Nashville and in London and a hidden track called “School Meals” that was recorded during the A Scruff at Heart sessions but has been remixed with drums being added to the track. Gilbert will be appearing at The Sheffield City Hall on Monday 28 February 2011Tel. 0114 278 9789 www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk 7.30pm from £24.50

DO WAH DIDDY GOOD THINKING BATMAN

Dear Venue/Entertainer

Has the smoking ban & cheap drinks called time on our locals?

How’s your geography?I always remember it was the one class where we could get away with a little naughty ribbing of the teacher, but here’s where that knowledge you just may have picked up could really help out. We have stacks of state of the art prizes to give away, from digital radios to CDs, DVDs and even an iPad. All you need to do is tune in, take note of the daily clues and then ring when you hear your cue to call, which will come at several times each day.

THE RUN UP TO CHELTENHAM HORSE RACING by Timelord

This weekend sees more exciting NH racing as the buildup to the Cheltenham Festival continues. I am going to concentrate on the top races this week and make no apology for starting off in Ireland. Last Sunday’s excellent card from Leopardstown had to be abandoned owing to water-logging at the course but has now been re-arranged for this coming Saturday. In the hope that it goes ahead this time I am repeating the advice from last week. In the 1.05 I am choosing Sailors Warn, who won easily last time out when defeating Fearless Falcon by three and a half lengths in a good time. Edward O’Grady’s youngster looks to be a top drawer recruit based on this evidence and can again prove too good for the second and third in that race, Fearless Falcon and Accidental Outlaw, who re-oppose here. The 2.10 novice hurdle can go to Willie Mullins’ Cottrelsbooley who was un-extended to win in another good time last time out at this course and can prove too good for what looks like a first class field of novices. I reckon that this race could turn out to be a true pointer to possible success at the festival. In the 2.40 I believe that Noble Prince can underline the value of the form from his recent seconds behind Realt Dubh, who is one of my strongest candidates for Festival success. In the 3.10 I quite like the chances of Neptune Collonges if he travels for the race. He was withdrawn last week however so his participation must be in some doubt. If Neptune Collonges defects I do like the chances of Kempes who was backed down in the run up to the race last week and was going to be ridden by AP McCoy. With the re-arrangement of the fixture jockey bookings may alter so check this out before finalising your bets. Among 6 televised races on Channel 4 on Saturday there are 4 from Newbury and two from Warwick. Newbury stages the Grade 2 Aon Chase over 3 miles, the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase over 2 miles 1 furlong and also the Grade 3 Totesport Trophy Hurdle, the feature race on a pretty high class card. Always a competitive event this year’s Totesport Trophy contest is no exception. This race may well highlight the chances of Festival handicap entrants that run well here and needs to be scrutinised for clues for future top handicaps. Alan King’s Salden Licht has to have an excellent chance based on the value of his recent form. Although he is likely to start as favourite this status is well deserved in my opinion. Last time out he beat Hunterview (third) by three and a quarter lengths while giving that rival 18lb. Hunterview has since gone on to land the Scottish County Handicap Hurdle at Musselburgh last Sunday when he kept on strongly to beat a decent field in a really good time. However, I am going to suggest that you seriously consider the chance of the Irish raider Final Approach. An inmate of the prolific Willie Mullins stable this one landed the valuable MCR hurdle at Leopardstown by two lengths last time out in a really good time and is a reasonably confident selection to follow up by winning this valuable prize as he does not look to be being asked to do any more here. In his absence I would revert to Salden Licht but this is a competitive event so you need to get a reasonable price (at least 5/1 would be my suggestion) for your selection as there are numerous dangers - Get Me out of Here, Tarkari, Zanir and Ronaldo des Mottes being just four among many with live chances. In the handicap hurdle at 1.55 it is with some trepidation that I shall resist the strong urge to stick with my top rated animal, Hills of Aran. This fellow is becoming something of a rogue for me as I know he has the ability to win a race like this. I am still not sure if he has been fully fit this season and he looked to have an impossible task in hindsight when up against Grands Crus last time. Just watch him win now that I’m tipping something else! Anyway I’m going for the same trainer’s other entry, William Hogarth, who ran well last time when seventh behind the improving Sparrow Hills at Wincanton. I also like the chances of Valento who looks to

THREE WINS IN THREE DAYS ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle

The Sheffield Steelers are riding high at the top of the table this week after pulling off a fantastic three wins in three days over the weekend. On Friday they took on their biggest rivals the Nottingham Panthers. Panthers, who recently released ex-Steeler Jonathan Zion, have lost all but one of the teams’ match-ups so far. The game was broadcast live on Sky Sports and Steelers’ Rob Dowd got the game off to a flying start, beating Nottingham netminder “K-Wall” Kowalski after just 27 seconds. Nottingham’s only goal of the game came at 12:41 in the first period, a short-handed effort from Rob Bellamy found it’s way past Ervins Mustakovs in the Steelers net. In the second period Steelers’ player-coach Ben Simon led the way with a goal at 21:27, followed up with his second of the evening at 32:48, whilst his opposite Corey Neilson spent 4 minutes in the penalty box. Neilson, who coined the phrase “Sexy Neilson Hockey” to describe his team’s performance in a press interview, and presumably has been regretting it ever since, failed to claim a point all evening. In the third period the Steelers took control completely, and ex-Panther Ashley Tait had a hand in all three goals. Scoring the first goal of the period at 48:42, he then assisted on both of Joey Talbot’s powerplay goals at 51:39 and 57:19. Derek Campbell and Guillaume Lepine took minor roughing penalties at 59:21 for a minor scuffle. The 6-1 scoreline left the Steelers just one point shy of the top of the table. Panthers, who lost two more games last weekend, were deducted 20% from their salaries for last week, for sub-par performances. The money will be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Saturday and Sunday’s games were a double header against the Coventry Blaze. Saturday saw the Steelers play at home, and after an evenly matched first period Ben Simon scored the first goal of the evening. Luke Fulghum scored a shorthanded goal to level the scores at 31:19, and in the third period the Blaze took the lead at 58:41. With time running out, the Steelers fans rose to their feet, and their faith was rewarded as Derek Campbell took the game into overtime with a goal at 59:06. A five-minute “sudden death” overtime period followed, and with the scores still level the game went to a penalty shoot-out. Joey Talbot scored the only goal of the shoot-out giving Steelers the win. On Sunday it was the Steelers’ turn to play the Blaze a visit. Ashley Tait scored first for the visitors at 11:40 on the powerplay, and the rest of the period remained scoreless. In the second, it was the Steelers who took control, Neil Clark doubling their lead at 30:58. Rob Dowd scored the Steelers’ third goal with four minutes gone in the third period, and just 20 seconds later Ashley Tait added his second of the evening. The Blaze tried to make a comeback with a powerplay goal at 48:50 from Dan Carlson, but the Steelers left with the points, making it three wins out of three that weekend. The Steelers’ next home game is on February 12th at Sheffield Arena, vs the Nottingham Panthers. Prior to the game the Arena plays host to the annual Varsity game between Sheffield Hallam University and University of Sheffield. Tickets are available from the Arena Box Office (0114 256 56 56) priced at £3. Students can get tickets for both of the day’s games for just £8. SSSC members save £1 on a ticket for the Steelers game in the evening on production of a valid membership card.

Angler’s Corner

The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1 be steadily improving. In the Aon Chase at 2.25 Riverside Theatre looks to have an ideal chance to support the form of his second to Long run in the King George. Of the others Fair Along, Chief Dan George and What a Friend (who has run well at this track before) make most appeal. Woolcombe Folly looks to have a good chance in the Game Spirit Chase but West with the Wind will be a tough nut to crack. This looks a race to savour and could provide valuable Cheltenham clues. At an each way price I also like Colin Tizzard’s Oiseau de Nuit who may provide the above two with an exciting battle up this long straight. At Warwick there are a couple of interesting televised chases that can provide clues to festival winner finding. The Grade 2 Kingmaker Novices Chase often throws up useful animals and the TurfTV Handicap Chase over 2m 4f looks a typically tricky puzzle to solve. In the 2.40 Kingmaker Novices Chase I think that Stagecoach Pearl has a sporting chance of causing an upset and he rates a good each way selection based on his pretty solid and consistent form. West with the Wind is next best, followed by Finian’s Rainbow and then the rest. For the 3.45, with Charlie Mann’s stable in good form, I am sticking with Fine Parchment to regain the winning thread. In an attempt to avoid too many non runners I have this week provided a short list of at least four selections per race. The order of my preference is reading from left to right so, when you check these on the day, the first declared runner that you come to reading from the left is the selection. I’ve finally had chance to get out carping over the last week or so; I visited Cudmore Fishery in North Staffordshire in freezing conditions! Faced with only a few clear pegs, a biting North Easterly wind, snow, sleet, rain and fog, I wasn’t over confident as I started my short 6 hour session. However, four carp later, all taken on Pallatrax Stonze rigs (www.pallatrax.co.uk) and pellet / boilie hookbaits, I was pleasantly surprised, especially as no other fish had come been caught during the preceding week! Avoca lake on the complex is now fishing steadily, so if you fancy a trip across, visit the new website at www.cudmorefishery.co.uk It’s less than an hour’s drive from the centre of Sheffield and certainly worth a trip. I received an email this week from a fine chap called Andrew who tells me he has ‘discovered’ the column at last. It’s always nice to hear from readers (it’s nice to know I have some!) and find out their thoughts about the column. I’m not aware that many local papers feature an angling column, and those that do may not be every week, so it’s great that the Mercury allows me to write this and tell other anglers about great new products, catch reports and venue news. Thanks Ed! If you have any thoughts you would like to share, then please get in touch and tell about your favourite venue at clint597@btinternet.com At this time of year, anglers are well underway thinking about the new season, and even going

as far as making New Year Resolutions about what they intend to catch! Well, this year, I’ve done just that, so here is my list for 2011; first up will be a 4lb+ perch, then a 40lb+ catfish and a 30lb+ carp and a double figure river barbel. I’m not greedy.....I may be deluded, but not greedy! In reality, I don’t expect to achieve all of the list, but 1 or 2 may be accomplished if I’m lucky. Being signed up as a consultant with Pallatrax will certainly help as I can now plan a baiting campaign and know for certain that I will have some consistency with what I put in. I’m also looking forward to using some of the innovative product ideas from the company to try and do something a little bit different to many of the other anglers on the bank. Hope fully, over the next week or two, I should have some catch reports from nearby venues; the ice has melted, although in many places torrential rain has taken its place! As an angler, there are many mornings when I struggle to get out of bed, and recently it’s been extra hard with the foul weather we have suffered; hopefully it is now at an end and we can all look forward to rising temperatures and wet nets as the year progresses. I’m keen to feature YOU in Angler’s Corner, so make sure you tell me what you are doing on the bank.

ROVERS COME AWAY FROM NEW DEN EMPTY HANDED MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

The Rovers had to make two enforced changes for the visit to Millwall due to injuries picked up on Tuesday against Burnley. James Coppinger and James Hayter were out of today’s team and were replaced by Ryan Mason and Steve Brooker. The Rovers the North Stand end where their supporters were housed. The early minutes saw both teams trying to settle down but in the fifth minute came the first booking for Trotter of Millwall for a foul on Stock. The free kick to the Rovers led them to a sustained attack which saw Stock feed Friend on the left but his low cross went across the face of goal with nobody getting a touch. The first corner came to the home side in the ninth minute from which Dunne headed over. This was followed by the Rovers first corner when a shot from Sharp was blocked. From the corner Keegan had a shot blocked, it came out to Oster on the right but his cross was then cleared. Woods, in the Rovers goal, was called upon in the 12th minute to make a routine save from Theo Robinson. Two minutes on and a low cross from Oster for Sharp was cut out by Purse at the expense of a corner to the Rovers. The match then see-sawed between the teams, but the final ball was missing thereby not troubling the keepers unduly. Then, in the 28th minute, a free kick

NEITHER SIDE DESERVED TO WIN GAFFERS REACTION www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

Doncaster Rovers were left reeling from a late sucker punch at the New Den on Saturday afternoon, as one of the last kicks of the game brought with it a late winning goal for Millwall as the home side snatched all three points. In a game ruined by strong winds and a difficult pitch; both sides were forced to alter their styles - with the encounter looking certain to end as a goalless draw.

BROOKER: WE WERE WORTH THE DRAW DRFC NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

Doncaster Rovers striker Steve Brooker felt that Rovers were at least worth a draw in what turned out to be a heartbreaking late defeat against Millwall at the New Den on Saturday afternoon. Rovers, who were forced to battle away in nasty weather conditions, looked set to follow up Tuesday evening’s win against Burnley with a clean sheet against Millwall; however a late finish from James Henry’s cross by Kevin Lisbie ensured that the three points would remain in London.

from Henry on the Millwall left just skimmed past the far post. Two minutes later and a cross by Mason from the Rovers right was headed wide by Brooker at the far post. Still pressing the Rovers forced a corner but this was cleared. Minutes later and Dunne, on the Millwall right, put over a good cross that Trotter headed over. The home team got the ball in the net in the 38th minute but the linesman’s flag went straight up for offside. Both sides were sharing possession but apart from a shot by Mason going over the bar from 25yards the interval score was sure to stay goalless. The home side got the second half underway and were soon appealing for a penalty for Friend holding down Theo Robinson in the penalty area but the ball ran to Dunne on the edge of the area, with his shot going over the bar. At the other end Keegan replicated that effort exactly. Minutes later, the Rovers won a corner when Forde, the Millwall keeper misjudged a cross but nothing came from it. Then a good move by the home side gave Theo Robinson the chance of a crack at goal but Woods saved at the near post. Another corner to the Rovers went begging then Millwall went downfield and “scored” through Theo Robinson but the flag was already up. The home side then made a couple of substitutions and almost immediately won a corner but this was cleared setting the Rovers on the attack. Forde blocked one shot and then dived on the ball before Mason could get there. The home team were having a bit more of the possession to this point but the Rovers hit back with a corner followed “I thought the game was petering out to a draw,” Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll told RoversPlayer after the game. “I thought that we had weathered the storm. In the second half, I expected an onslaught and that never really came. I don’t think that any team deserved to win it and it’s a difficult one to stomach. A late goal on the back of a good win against Burnley; we wanted to keep the run going and we felt that we had done. We lost another two players and came here with a patched up team once again. You felt that, in the purest sense, we played very well. We dug in and we created; I think Gary “In any game, if you concede in the ninetieth minute, it’s a gut-buster,” said Brooker. “We really grafted, although we perhaps didn’t play good football. We had an agenda and a game plan that we thought would work. So, to concede in the ninetieth minute is a sickener. They had a lot more of the ball than us, but we didn’t feel that they created a whole lot in the first half. We had a couple of chances, but with our work rate we looked pretty solid and felt that we were at least worth a draw.” Amazingly, Brooker’s start for the Rovers was his first in the league in the red and white hoops - an incredible two years after signing for the Club. “I got the shout this afternoon. I had an inkling that it may be the case, with Hayts initially missing out and then Copps

by Sharp and Mason linking to give Mason a crack at goal from the edge of the area but he put wide. In the 69th minute, Henry shot wide from 25yards and then Oster got to the right byline before crossing for Brooker to head over the bar. Henry again had a go from distance but scuffed it wide. It was all hands to the pump now for the Rovers as the home side piled on the pressure in the last quarter of an hour. That pressure told in the 90th minute when Henry got in a cross from the right for LISBIE, at the near post, to guide a glancing header into the far corner of the net. The Rovers couldn’t find a reply in added time and cruelly lost to such a late goal.

launched a deep cross into he back post but under pressure Ryan Taylor headed the ball harmlessly wide. On 28 minutes Le Fondre ran onto a long ball forward and instinctively struck the ball on the run from just outside the area, but it ran a yard across Rhys Taylor’s far post and out for a goal kick. Just after the half hour the Millers produced a sustained period of pressure on the Crewe goal with both Law and Ian Thomas-Moore having a succession of crosses into the area, but again the Crewe backline held firm and kept the Millers out. With 10 minutes remaining before the interval the Millers kept plugging away. A short corner resulted in a cross by Law into the six yard box but Johnny Mullins could only glance his header just wide of the far post. The Millers persistence finally paid off two minutes before the break with the opening goal. Jason Taylor had a shot deflected wide for a corner and after Crewe dealt with the initial danger Marcus Marshall attacked down the left before drilling a low cross into the six yard area, it was missed initially by Le Fondre, but Fenton came in behind the striker and drilled the ball into the net for his third of the season. In difficult conditions, the second half began slowly with neither side able to test the opposition goalkeeper in the opening stages. The Millers had to wait until the hour mark before their first effort of the second half, when Thomas-Moore burst beyond the front two and fired a shot from the edge of the area, but Taylor tipped wide at his near post. On 62 minutes the visitors were rewarded for their improvement in the early stages of the second half. Lee Bell split the Rotherham defence with an incisive pass for Leitch-Smith, who looked offside, to calmly slot past Warrington to level the score. On 74 minutes Moore introduced Mark Randall in

Unsatisfied with a point, Crewe continued to press forward and Leitch-Smith had another chance from Ashley Westwood’s low cross, but fired wide from a difficult angle. Inside the final ten minutes, the Millers were given a generous free kick by Mr. Foster on the edge of the Crewe area.Tom Newey fired straight into the wall, and Law shot over with the rebound. The visitors went straight up the other end and had an excellent chance to take the lead, but Danny Shelley side-footed wide when he should have scored. On 84 minutes Rotherham re-took the lead, capitalising on a hopeful punt forward. Patrick Ada misjudged the bounce of the ball inside the area, allowing Le Fondre to stick a leg out and lob over the onrushing Taylor and score an excellent poacher’s goal. BLADESʻ DISMAL RUN CONTINUES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

United’s dismal run continued, conceding three goals and having two players sent off on the way to a first defeat in four visits to Portman Road. Goals from Damien Delaney, David Norris and Connor Wickham secured the points for Ipswich, whilst Steve Simonsen saved a second half penalty from Grant Leadbitter. United’s miserable day was complete late on when Rob Kozluk and Lee Williamson were both sent off for incidents right under the nose of Micky Adams in the Blades dugout. Adams made two changes with Collins, making his first appearance since moving to United permanently, and Bogdanovic coming in to the team. Defender Mattock, injured in midweek, and striker Evans, who has been suffering with illness, missed out, whilst Calve and Jordan returned to the bench. Without a left-back in the starting XI, it soon became clear that Lowry, a natural left-footer, had been asked to move out to a full-back position. The midfield quartet, from right to left, of Williamson, Montgomery, Doyle and Cresswell was unchanged whilst

Bogdanovic partnered Bent in attack for the first time. Wearing all black, United made an encouraging start. McAuley was forced to divert away a cross from Williamson, who also delivered two corners in the first eight minutes, both of which caused problems. From the first, Ertl almost got on the end of Bogdanovic’s flick on and then Doyle fired over with his left foot. Bent’s snapshot, from another Bogdanovic flick, was straight at Fulop, whilst Collins could not keep his shot down from another Williamson corner as United continued to have the better of the opening 15 minutes. The Ipswich supporters had to wait until the 19th minute for their first serious chance. Martin was upended by Montgomery on the edge of the penalty area; Bullard took the free-kick and was on target but Simonsen made a comfortable save. The effort was quickly followed by another but Wickham’s half-volley from the left was across goal and wide. Ipswich came more into the game as the half wore on and just before the half hour they made their increased possession count. Lowry was adjudged to have handled Martin’s cross and from the resulting Bullard free-kick, DELANEY arrived unmarked at the back post to head past Simonsen. Doyle was booked for lunge as United looked to recover from

going behind. Both McAuley and Edwards were called upon to clear a cross from Parrino and the Blades wasted two free-kicks in good positions as half-time approached. United were unable to breakdown the Ipswich rearguard before the half-time whistle, whilst at the start of the second half both managers sent out unchanged personnel. The visitors against started well. Bent almost put Bogdanovic through but Fulop was quick to spot the danger and raced off his line and then a cross from the right split Bent and Cresswell, allowing the home side to clear. But, once again, the start was ruined by an Ipswich goal. With 53 minutes gone, Bullard was the supplier of a dinked cross and despite a blue shirt being in an offside position, NORRIS arrived late at the back post and did well to adjust his body before turning the ball home. United’s response was a double change - Quinn and Yeates replacing Doyle and Bent - which allowed Cresswell to move into a central position. However, Ipswich went close to adding a third when Priskin beat Simonsen to a through ball from Edwards but the subsequent shot came back off a post and Collins cleared. Again Ipswich went close, Leadbitter’s free-kick dropping just wide, whilst just after the hour mark boss Adams made his last

change, introducing Kozluk for Parrino. Lowry was booked for a crude foul on Martin but United were enjoying a spell of possession. Bogdanovic was unable to get enough purchase on a Yeates cross after a driving run by Montgomery and then Williamson drilled a left-footer just over the crossbar. For the home side, Leadbitter’s 25-yard volley was blocked, Martin fired wide under pressure from Lowry and Williamson picked up a booking for a late challenge on Kennedy. United’s day got considerably worse as the game entered the final ten minutes. Lowry - already on a booking - was adjudged to have fouled Priskin in the penalty area. The loan defender escaped further sanctions and Simonsen dropped to his left to push away the resulting spot-kick from Leadbitter. Simonsen saved United once more on 84 minutes, making a smart stop from Norris following a quick break, but he could not keep out WICKHAM on 87 minutes. The teenage striker ran from the halfway line, leaving Lowry, Montgomery, Kozluk and Simonsen in his wake before slotting home. To make matters worse United had two players sent off in the space of a minute, both for off the ball incidents. Firstly, Kozluk was shown a red card for clashing with Martin and then, in the aftermath and with temperatures rising, Williamson - already on a booking - picked up a second yellow card and also headed for an early bath. Ipswich made a couple of substitutions and played out the remaining minutes, including the extras, without further incident to pick up the points.

Double defeats against Leicester (0-1) and Ipswich (0-3) in the last eight days have barely given fans a boost in confidence; though once again against the Foxes they showed that on their day, pound for pound they can equally match attractive football against any other Championship side – even though they are blowing a blizzard in front of goal. In such hardship it’s easy to be beaten and believe that League One football is only a game away, but let’s remember our forthcoming fixtures; United face Millwall this weekend before our game in hand against Reading. This is quickly followed by trips to Palace and Scunthorpe, six or seven points out of these games surely would lift the Blades out of the mire? Of course, it’s easier said than done when you are struggling to win even one point but we beat the Lions and the Eagles already this season so why not do it again? There are 17 games left of the season for United to play, this time last season it was Reading who occupied the last relegation spot (32 points from 29 games); they too had just previously changed their manger – come May they finished ninth and seven points away from the play-off zone. It was our near City rivals Wednesday who dropped out of the Championship and whilst it may seem that there is no light at the end of the tunnel a quick change in fortune could see united performing what looks like a ‘miracle.’ Keep the faith!

THE CHIN IS UP...JUST! FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton

As much as it might seem the most obvious thing to do after yet more Sheffield United defeats, I can not bring myself to pen another negative contribution. It is getting to the point where everything that there is to be said has been said. The SUFC website on Monday carried a rallying call from Trevor Birch for Blades to unite in the face of adversity, stating with particular vigour that there was nothing to be gained from pointing accusing fingers and looking to apportion blame. With two of our most vital games of the season coming up over the next seven days, I would tend to agree. That being said, irrespective of whether we get relegated, there will be cause for an almighty inquest at the end of this season. But in home fixtures against Millwall and Reading this week, we technically have the potential to pick up six points that could be crucial to deciding our fate. I take on board that considering we haven’t won in the last nine games, this may be slightly optimistic. A return of at least four points however will stand us in fairly decent stead for two massively important away games against fellow strugglers Crystal Palace and Scunthorpe United. I seem to have been saying it all season, more with wistful hope than defiant expectance, but we are now facing must win games. Lose against Millwall and we move onto the next three fixtures with trepidation. Win and we can take renewed confidence through the rest of the season. This column is beginning to feel like a self help tool and for now I’m remaining hopeful that our slight promise in recent games will eventually lead to a clutch of wins. I hope so, because of the thought of local derbies against Rotherham, Chesterfield and W*******y next season sends a shiver down my spine.

OWLS COME BACK TO SCRAPE DRAW MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday came back from two goals down to salvage a draw against nine-man MK Dons. In a dramatic contest in front of new boss Gary Megson, the Owls produced a mixed performance, falling two behind to goals from Peter Leven and Daniel Powell before squaring the game through Neil Mellor and Clinton Morrison. Leven later received his marching orders, as did Gary MacKenzie earlier in a riveting Hillsborough clash. The Owls made four changes from the midweek defeat at Peterborough, with Arron Jameson, Daniel Jones, James O’Connor and Clinton Morrison in the starting line-up. Jameson deputised for knee victim Nicky Weaver to make his home debut for the Owls. The young keeper made his full first team debut in the reverse fixture against the Dons back in November when the Owls won 4-1 at StadiumMK. Wednesday made a bright to the

Match Reports, Reactions, News, Fans Column - All Articles copyright of www.swfc.co.uk

contest and O’Connor, who took the captain’s armband in the absence of Weaver, came close to the opening goal after eight minutes. Excellent closing down from Clinton Morrison in the final third led to the striker winning possession and delivering a teasing cross which O’Connor struck first time but Dons keeper David Martin saved well. A glancing header by Clinton Morrison from O’Connor’s cross flew just wide moments later as the Owls went in search of the first goal. But against the run of play the visitors took the lead from the penalty spot. In what was almost the Dons’ first attack, Luke Chadwick fed a through-ball in towards Keanu Marsh-Brown, who was brought down by Jameson in the area and Leven stepped up to convert the spot-kick. That setback didn’t deter the Owls, who continued to take the game to the visitors and O’Connor came within a whisker of an equaliser. A Wednesday free kick on the edge of the area, taken by Gary Teale, came back off the wall and O’Connor’s first time strike whistled inches over the bar. Things took another turn for the worst for Wednesday, though, and the home side went further behind after 26 minutes and in disappointing fashion from a

defensive point of view. Marsh-Brown was afforded acres of space after receiving a throughball which split open the Owls’ rearguard and his low centre was neatly placed into the bottom corner by Powell. But before half time, MK Dons were reduced to ten men when MacKenzie saw red for a second bookable offence. The defender was beaten all ends up near the halfway line by a neat piece of skill from Clinton Morrison and a second yellow was shown for the challenge. Wednesday made two changes after the half time break, introducing Mellor and Paul Heffernan into the attack in place of Gary Madine and Teale. Despite playing a man down, MK Dons were making good use of the ball and enjoyed neat spells of possession after the restart. The Owls desperately needed an early breakthrough and almost pulled a goal back just after the hour mark when Jermaine Johnson met Giles Coke’s corner with a firm header that flashed wide of the target. Mellor then rose well to get his head to another Coke cross but his header was off target - but the striker wasn’t to be denied moments later. Coke’s feed found Mellor in the area and the substitute buried into the net to lift the Hillsborough crowd with 20 minutes left to play.

With Wednesday buoyed by Mellor’s goal, MK Dons were having to deal with heavy pressure as the Owls poured men forward in search of an equaliser. Mellor went close again when Dons keeper Martin saved behind for a corner - from which Wednesday drew level. Coke swung in the flag kick and Michael Morrison glanced a header into the danger zone for Clinton Morrison to steer into the bottom to set up an exciting finish. Jameson produced a stunning save near the end to keep out Chadwick before the Dons went down to nine men when Leven saw red for a second bookable offence. The Owls played out the final few minutes firmly in the driving seat but could not find a winner, although they took credit for a spirited comeback to post a point. OʼCONNOR BACKS NEW OWLS CHIEF GAFFERS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk

Stand-in skipper James O’Connor has hailed the half time intervention of new Owls boss Gary Megson following the 2-2 draw with MK Dons on Saturday. After taking the S6 reins on Friday evening, Megson intimated his involvement in the weekend contest would be limited. But with Wednesday 2-0 down and seemingly heading for defeat, the new Hillsborough chief intervened, made two changes and gave what proved to be an inspired team talk. Midfield man O’Connor said: “Gary Megson does not take a back seat when it comes to football, his passion will not let him. I think it’s fantastic. “It’s fair to say he wasn’t too enamoured by the first half performance and he had every right not to be. We didn’t do ourselves justice, but in the second half there was a vast improvement. “He popped in before the game to say hello, but then came in the dressing room at half time and felt the need to make a few points. “He did and great credit to him. He changed the formation and it really worked for us. “In the end it was really disappointing not to win the game. There were two definite penalties - Neil Mellor was pushed in the back, then the Paul Heffernan one, you don’t get any clearer than that.” O’Connor is fully conversant with the managerial abilities of Megson having worked under him at Stoke and West Brom. And the Irishman believes S6 owner Milan Mandaric has pulled a rabbit from the hat in appointing the former Owls midfielder: “I have played under Gary a couple of times, at Stoke and West

HERE WE ARE AGAIN

FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob Here we are again, almost a year since I optimistically touted Irvine as the man who would finally turn things around for Wednesday, he is sacked. Rightly so in my opinion, the results, the football, the signings and the post-match excuses were bad and getting worse. Hopefully, it’s not a case of “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” as The Who once screamed to the masses. Megson is a Wednesdayite, no doubt about it. He has experience, freshness, and a love for the club that is unrivalled by any manager on the circuit. He inherits a good squad – on paper. He needs to quickly work out his best eleven and stick with it. Irvine fell into the paranoid trap of worrying about the strategies of Yeovil and Leyton Orient and selecting a team accordingly. It didn’t work. Megson will have time but Hillsborough and, due to the fans who sit within it, have grown to be a bitter, restless and imposing arena. I include myself as a contributor. We are a beleaguered set of fans who are loyal yet increasingly demanding and we deserve and demand better. Hillsborough is a tough place to be when you are not doing what is expected by us Wednesdayites but when you are we love you, protect you and hold you close to our bosom. You could say we are like a strict father who currently has a son that is getting into trouble, doing badly at school and generally letting you down. You love him dearly but you will not relent your harsh words until he becomes a son you can be proud of. February is make or break for the season. I try but I can’t be optimistic anymore, I will just see how it develops. And as The Who also sang, I won’t get fooled again.

Brom,” continued O’Connor. “He was very unfortunate at Stoke because the Icelandic takeover happened and he lost his job. Then at West Brom he had great success, followed by success at Bolton. “He’s actually a very under-rated manager. He didn’t get the credit he deserves at Bolton. “I have worked with him before and he is someone who is very passionate about this football club. Even when he was at the other clubs he would always talk about Sheffield Wednesday. “I am delighted to see him get a chance here and hope he can bring us success because I know how passionate he is about the club. “He is very tactically aware - the second half on Saturday showed that. His passion and commitment, you can see that by the way he gets involved from the touchline. “I would imagine that will be the same as always, probably a little bit more because it’s Sheffield Wednesday. He will be extra determined to be successful here. “There’s a lot of history here for Gary. His dad was involved and he shares a real love for Wednesday. “’It’s a proper football club’, he would always say. “And without doubt, I am still looking for us to get promoted this season. “We need to make sure we produce that second half performance for the rest of the season.”
