WHITE ROSE REAL ALE FESTIVAL 2011
Rotherham’s branch of the Campaign for Real Ale is hoping to discover the best beer in Yorkshire, after securing the rights to host the official regional beer championships, which will take place during this year’s Real Ale and Music Festival. This year’s festival takes place at Magna during 2-5th March and will be themed around the white rose… meaning that almost every beer will be specially selected from counties featuring a white rose in their
crest! The winning beer will be judged by a panel of beer experts, and go on to compete in the national finals, where it could be crowned the Champion Beer of Britain for 2011. The Rotherham branch of CAMRA, which was created as a result of the popularity of the town’s real ale festival currently has a membership of over 500 across the borough, and Chairman Jim Crowe believes that one of the reasons the festival has proved to be so popular is the
wide variety of brews available: “It is a terrific honour for Rotherham to host the Yorkshire beer championship and means that the festival is likely to attract some of the best brewers from all four corners of the region. “Some people say that there is a beer out there to suit anyne’s palette, and with over 250 beers available this year, festival visitors will have a great chance to discover the huge variety of Real Ales for themselves. For some it’s about experiencing new
and unusual brews, while others come along to see if they agree with the judging panel. “The White Rose Festival is a fantastic platform for beers in Yorkshire and already it is shaping up to being a memorable week, with some of the region’s best known breweries going head-to-head with smaller lesser-known micro-breweries.” Entry tickets have been frozen at the same price as last year’s festival and are now available via the festival website: www.magnarealale.
co.uk Tickets will also go on sale in selected outlets shortly. Special entry rates for CAMRA members are available.

COPLEYʼS COLUMN
Oh to be in England. I can’t recall who said that and when, but what I do know is that whoever and whenever it was certainly would not be saying it now. I have just returned from a wellearned break on Tenerife wondering how this tiny island manages its’ economy. Possibly because everyone seems to go to work, and all the immigrants, mostly British, contribute to the financial well-being of the economy. Whilst over there, I purchased two hundred Philip Morris cigarettes, which in this country would have cost sixty pounds for just seven euros and fifty cents, which equates to fractionally over seven pounds. We stayed in five star accommodations at the Beverley Hills club, where I had more than my normal beer intake at night, probably because the price was less than two pounds a pint. The food was excellent in the many nearby restaurants, and was very affordable. There has to be lessons to be learned on how this fantastic island manages to do it, and apply the fundamental principles to our own economy. I have my own thoughts on the matter, and were I in charge, the first thing I would change was to pull out of our links with Europe. We get nothing from being involved other than being one of the few members that actually contribute to prop up the less economically stable countries, and what do we get in return? We get European rulings telling us how to run our own country. The benefits system in this country, although terribly abused, does not, contrary to public opinion, in reality cost very much, as the government gets most of it back in indirect taxation, and at least it guarantees the circulation of money within the country. As long as the money is spent internally, on British made products, and is not sent abroad, I think that the problem is not as bad as it is made out to be. At least my pontificating will probably provoke an editor’s comment from my managing editor, the font of all knowledge, Andrew Platts.
This essentially this week has to be a holiday blog as thankfully I have not been freezing to death here, but enjoying much warmer weather abroad. When we left to come home, the temperature was 26 degrees and it had plummeted to minus 2 when we landed at East Midlands airport. Oh to be in Tenerife. I resolved to make it a bit of a busman’s holiday whilst out there and was treated to some fantastic entertainment every night on the complex where we were staying. I befriended the excellent compere, a very talented man, Gordon King, who was a a seasoned professional, having been in the business for forty years. The first night, we had an extremely talented young man, Matt Andrews, whose act was comparable to our own Paul Pashley, if that gives you an idea of how good he was, followed the next night by his brother who acquitted himself very well as a Frank Sinatra tribute, not only sounding like ‘old blue eyes, but looking very much like him when he was young. I was curiously looking forward to the next evening , which heralded the appearance of sixties one hit wonder Leapy Lee, who older readers will remember had his solitary hit with a catchy little song entitled Little Arrows. This guy has to be approaching seventy five, yet still retained the ability to be a first class entertainer. As I well know, a bit of ‘Just For Men’ on your hair does wonders, which he freely admitted to, and he boldly stated that he was the oldest person in the room. The following evening produced George Pena, a hilarious comedian from New York who complemented his quickfire comedy with an impressive tenor singing voice. On the final night , we were treated to another comedian, Anthony Scott, a Glaswegian, who reminded me of Billy Connolly. If you get the opportunity to catch any of the aforementioned artistes whilst on holiday, I can strongly recommend them. Finally, a close friend of mine for many years, Albert Green, died whilst I was away, and I sadly missed his funeral. Albert was a larger than life character and will be sadly missed. Rest in Peace Albert and God Speed.
ALBERT SNODGRASS
A guy was trying to console a friend who’d just found his wife in bed with another man. “Get over it, buddy,” he said. “It’s not the end of the world.” “It’s all right for you to say,” answered his buddy. “But what if you came home one night and caught another man in bed with your wife?” The fella ponders for a moment, then says, “I’d break his cane and kick his guide dog.” A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Amal”. The other goes to a family in Spain, who name him “Juan”. Years later Juan sends a picture of himself to his mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds: “They’re twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Amal.”

GAMING REVIEW DE BLOB 2 Sticking Graham Norton’s gaudy outfits and a bag of Skittles in a blender might be an appealing thought (why stop with just the outfits?), but it’s the only way to describe the blindingly colourful world of De Blob 2. This is a platform game targeted toward a more youthful audience, but don’t let that put you off, this is a game that will appeal to all ages. You play Blob, an amorphous paint-absorbing critter whose mission it is to bring colour back to the world by painting everything, it’s like you’ve thrown up every episode of Glee meets Rolf Harris after a Chicken Biryani. The basic gameplay is this: each area begins devoid of colour, and it’s your job to bounce around painting everything you come in contact with. Yes, it’s that simple. Sure, there are enemies to face and the game is given some structure with a variety of simple missions, but there isn’t anything complicated here, which is a shame as a bit more substance and diversity of challenges could have made De Blob a true classic. A number of 2d puzzle levels are a lot of fun and do well to break up the game, but you’re basically on rails as you set about transforming each new city into Elton John’s boudoir! If you like your games dark and dirty then this is not the title for you, for De Blob 2 is saccharine sweet and blindingly cheerful, and while there’s some decent gameplay as you bounce your way through all ten cities, there’s a bit too much handholding early on and the timers on each level make things feel somewhat restrictive. That said, with a decent multiplayer option and some excellent gameplay, it really is worth persevering through the early levels in favour of a more rounded game later on. If you like Mario and Kirby, then De Blob 2 is definitely a game well worth checking out. Score: 8/10. Go and paint the town red. Or blue. Or yellow. Or green. Or… ONLINE GAMES RIFT Out: 4th March 2011 Everyone is waiting for the next big Massively Multiplayer Online Game to finally topple World of Warcraft off the top slot, but sadly, based on the pen and paper Role Playing Game of the same name, Rift is not the MMO you are looking for. Sure, it’s got great graphics and a half decent storyline, but the reason Warcraft is so successful is that it has playability and immersion in spades, and compared to those behemoths, Rift is the bawling for attention red headed stepchild of the MMO universe. If you’re bored and fancy something new, then there may be something here of interest, but that said, MMOs have come a long way in the last ten years, and Rift doesn’t do anything to further the genre. Bad Rift. BAD! Score: 6/10. Intriguing, but there are better places to hang out when you’re in denial about having a life.

DC UNIVERSE ONLINE Out: Now How much can you really do with an online superhero game? Well, the answer is practically nothing, and that’s never been more evident, for DCU is basically Champions Online with a graphical upgrade, a few tweaks here and there, and adorned with the DC Comics logo. It’s nothing new, and to provide lasting game play, there needs to be a decent hook that just isn’t present. Endless Repetitive Strain Injury inducing battles by the bucket load do not a fun game make. Sure, it looks pretty as you get to beat up your enemies again and again and again (and again), but it has a less detailed character design system than previous superhero MMOs (which was always something of the appeal) and a truly tragic assortment of missions. This is a game that will only appeal to gamers who really do love showing the world their underwear. If you love superhero games then you’ll enjoy reaching the level cap, otherwise, move on, this isn’t the game you wanted to see. Go play Batman: Arkham Asylum instead. Score: 5.5/10. Underpants.
WORLD SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING Hundreds of the world’s best skaters will be in
Sheffield when the city plays host to the thrill seeking 2011 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships. Tickets are now on sale to see many of the athletes who starred in Vancouver’s Winter Olympics, including Great Britain’s Jon Eley who narrowly missed out on a medal, will make up the collective of more than 200 skaters from 34 countries competing from March 11-13. The National Ice Skating Association (NISA) will host the exciting, fast paced event at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena. It is the first time the Championship has been held in England for ten years. NISA chief executive Keith Horton said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for everyone to see the world’s best short track speed skaters from Asia, North America and Europe. “We have a commitment to bringing sporting events to this country to show that our facilities are up there with the best in the world. We are very much looking forward to working with the city of Sheffield and our partners once again. “NISA has assembled an experienced organising committee who are already working hard on the entire pre-event organisation. We are confident that these championships will be of the highest standard possible and will be most memorable for everyone involved.” Ken Pendrey, director of operations and chair of the organising committee said: “I’m confident that this World Championship will be a most exciting and thrilling event for not only the home spectators, but for the millions of Short Track fans from North America and Asia who will be watching the event on live TV. “The Motorpoint Arena itself is a fantastic place to hold this prestigious ISU Championship and I’m positive that it will provide all the facilities necessary in making this event a huge success.” With a capacity of 12,500, the Motorpoint Arena is Sheffield International Venues (SIV) flagship facility. All major NISA events are held in Sheffield with the ISU Junior Grand Prix coming up at iceSheffield from September 29 to October 3. The event sees all the best junior figure skaters from around the world competing in mens, ladies, ice dance and pairs disciplines. The European Figure Skating Championships will also be staged at the Motorpoint Arena in 2012, which is the third largest figure skating competition in the world – ticket details are still to be confirmed. Steve Brailey, chief executive of SIV said: “It is a credit to both the SIV team and the city that NISA chooses our venues so often for its international events. The first-class facilities on offer at the Motorpoint Arena will provide an excellent venue for a competition of this calibre. “It’s another opportunity for SIV to have a positive economic impact on the city and will also be a boost to Sheffield’s tourism industry attracting hundreds of skaters, coaches and families from around the world.” Ticket details for the World Championships visit www.motorpointarena.co.uk, or call the Motorpoint Arena Box Office 0114 256 56 56.

Digital UK – the independent, not-for-profit organisation leading the switchover – has teamed up with Sheffield Trading Standards and Age UK to encourage residents who may need a new aerial to look for ‘Registered Digital Installers’ (RDIs) displaying the ‘digital tick’ logo. This means they are approved and security-checked with the relevant qualifications and insurance. A full list of RDI installers in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire region can be found at rdi-lb.tv or by calling the Digital UK advice line on 08456 50 50 50. If householders cannot find a local RDI installer, they are advised to look for an installer registered with the Confederation of Aerial Industries’ CAI Plus scheme. More information can be found at digitaluk.co.uk. Digital UK and Sheffield Trading Standards are offering these five facts to help viewers avoid getting ripped off: • There’s no such thing as a digital aerial, and most existing aerials in the region will work both before and after the switchover. If you get a good analogue picture now, your existing aerial should be fine for digital. However, it may need replacing if it’s in poor condition. If you need a new aerial and you qualify for the Switchover Help Scheme, you can get one at no extra cost. • Use the test card at Ceefax p284 for guidance on whether you need a new aerial. If so, look for a Registered Digital Installer, or else a member of trade body the CAI. Failing that, ask family and friends to recommend installers with a good track record, and get written quotations for the work from at least two. • No-one from Digital UK or the Switchover Help Scheme will come to your home without an appointment offering to sell goods or services. Don’t agree to have work done by an aerial installer who calls without an appointment and fails to show identification. • Before work starts, agree the price, payment arrangements and start/finish dates. Don’t pay upfront. • If you suspect you have been ripped off, or that there is a rogue trader in your area, call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. John Askew, Digital UK’s regional manager in Yorkshire and Humber, said: “We’re determined to do all we can to protect consumers in the lead up to switchover. There are always people who use clever and persuasive tactics to try to make a fast buck on the back of something new, like digital switchover and we want people to be aware.”

Do you find packaging of Medicines/tablets Dates for your diaries difficult? Sheffield 50+ Elders Congress on Thursday, A master’s student at the University of Sheffield is investigating how older people remove their medications from packaging. With the many advances in health care, insufficient research and thought has been put into assessing the accessibility of medical packaging. It is widely known that a number of older people have difficulty opening some medication ie blister packs. The research aims to analyse how older people access medication from blisterpackaging. Participants aged 55 and over, will be asked to take part in a short motion capture removing tablets from blister packs. Hopefully, this will bring more awareness and understanding of this issue. If you would like further information or to take part, please contact Aamir by telephone on 0114 2735426 or by email at mea07ahs@ shef.ac.uk
COUNTRY COURT CARE MAKES THE FINAL Family run organisation Country Court Care has been named as one of the finalists in the National Health Investor Awards 2011 for the category of Residential Care Provider of the Year. This is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry and the group will be competing for the title with large corporate operators such as Avery Healthcare, Barchester Healthcare and Four Seasons Healthcare. Being named as a finalist is a great achievement and recognition of the existing demand for smaller, family orientated operators who can provide excellent care. The business currently incorporates eight care homes providing residential, nursing, dementia and learning disability care for over 300 service users. The organisation also provides domiciliary care and is currently employing over 300 staff spread across three regions. The competition ranges from 21 - 350 care homes, all with a national base. The winner will be announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 2nd June 2011 with Country Court Care hoping to defy the odds. Abbey Grange is Country Court Care’s latest acquisition. The home is registered for 87 beds and is in-keeping the organisations current stock of character properties.

Community Care - Caring for people and cutting services - a recipe for error The government says the elderly and disabled should not lose care support services as a result of public spending cuts. Nevertheless, many councils are looking at making service cuts. Will these be legal? Social workers should assess the level of a person’s needs as low, moderate, substantial or critical. The council decides which level of need they will meet. Most currently meet substantial or critical needs. However, at least one council in the region has consulted on a proposal to restrict support to people with critical needs only. Others may follow. Austin Thornton, community care lawyer at Wrigleys solicitors said: “Critical needs only support may mean that councils will do just enough to keep people in the community who would otherwise have to go into a home and help people whose health is or is expected to be at significant risk. By depriving everyone else of support, the numbers in this position will rapidly increase, so this is a very short-term financial fix. It will be difficult for social service departments to both live
within their budgets and act lawfully in meeting their duties.”
Under government pressure, instead of providing people with actual care services, many councils are encouraging those with home care needs to receive payments of cash with which they can buy their own services instead. Mr Thornton commented: “This is fine if it promotes choice and independence and is what service users want, but the councils’ legal duty is to meet need. It will be unlawful if direct payments are cut so that they are insufficient to buy the services shown in the care plan. In some areas, there are insufficient private providers and it will be unlawful for councils to close services and give people direct payments instead if there isn’t a service to purchase.” Austin Thornton Telephone 0114 267 5588 austin.thornton@wrigleys.co.uk www.communitycaresolicitors. co.uk Wrigleys Solicitors LLP 3rd Floor Fountain Precinct Balm Green Sheffield S1 2JA

LIVE REVIEW by KT Evans The Twang O2 Academy - 18/02/11
LIVE REVIEW by KT Evans James Blunt Sheffield City Hall - 19/02/11
Picture this is you would…an unenthusiastic, unimaginative five piece, lacking energy and any sort of stage presence. Now COMPLETELY scratch that and you might just be starting to understand a little more about The Twang. With a fan base even the largest room in the 02 Academy had trouble accommodating, the band were full of life, clearly revved up about performing to the Sheffield masses. ‘We just want to get on stage…and get a number one album…’ jokes drummer Matthew Clinton, who minutes before gracing the stage did not look remotely phased by the task of hyping up the eager audience consisting mostly of, lets be honest, burly looking men. His passion for performing however was evident throughout The Twangs explosive set, which was kicked off by ‘Barney Rubble,’ arguably the best song in the bands diverse repertoire. Preceding this, ‘Either Way’ the typically northern-sounding tune which projected the band into the mainstream in 2008 didn’t fail to get the audience going, with front man Phil Etheridge demonstrating his trade-mark dance moves. Picture jumping onto burning hot coals…yep. Having said this, both Phil and vocalist Martin Saunder’s audience participation really was first class; all too often you see bands so absorbed in their own music it almost comes across as a selfish performance. This however certainly wasn’t the case, making The Twang that little bit more unique. They’re likeable, relatable almost, something which positively works in their favour. ‘Encouraging Sign’ and ‘Two Lovers’ were followed by the band’s new EP ‘Guapa’ which having been released only a week before the band’s performance, sounded as polished and practised as the rest. ‘We’re hoping to release our new album in June/July this year,’ explains drummer Matthew. ‘We’ve tried to give this one a different sound. It’s taken us about a year to write.’ Therefore, if we were to judge their new album on brand new EP ‘Guapa,’ it’s fair to say The Twang have pulled off a cracker. It looks like the band also have a pretty packed 2011 in front of them aswell, a culmination of various festival and gig performances. ‘We’re playing in Vienna in April (of which was also news to the bands sound technician aswell) along with ‘Napa Live’ in the middle of June…that should be really good.’ Closer to home however, the set was concluded by ‘Wide Awake’ and ‘Cloudy Room’ both lively closers to a top notch gig.
Hey, James, lets not be “blunt” here… “The closer you get to London, the more miserable the audience get…’ O’h hold on…’but not in Sheffield!” Demonstrating he still has what it takes to win over his crowd of adoring fans, James Blunt brought his heart-warming live show to Sheffield’s City Hall last Saturday. Supporting the ex-army Captain came in the form of Wakey!Wakey!, an American five piece from Brooklyn who, with a charismatic frontman and heap-loads of energy, successfully won over the support of the crowds. However, the night was still young and the entrance of the main act literally took everybody by surprise. Appearing at the back of the Urwin Mitchell Oval Hall, Blunt made his way through the aisles, shaking hands and embracing his fans…O’h the charmer! Kicking off the night with ‘Wise Men,’ a top twenty hit from his first album ‘Back to Bedlam,’ Blunt showed off his tender guitar skills by entwining a successful acoustic section to the tune alongside his backing band. This was followed by hits from his latter albums ‘All the Lost Souls’ aswell as most recent album ‘Some Kind of Trouble’ which, silhouetted by a back drop of the New York Sky line, complimented the relaxed tone set for the night. All throughout the set, ‘I love you Jamie’ could be heard, (Jamie…I thought his name was James!) which Blunt used to his advantage to liven up his audience. The tune which arguably propelled the star to massive success, ‘Your Beautiful’ was performed towards the latter half of the set, a definite highlight of the night. Although eyes did bleed when a loved-up couple decided to show their affection by making their way into the aisle to have a…smooch, Blunt’s first-class vocals were clearly evident and his passion for music was sure to shine through. After one and a half hours of energetic performing, Blunt emerged back on stage for his three song encore, complimented by applauding and cheering from his fans (I love you Jamie, yes that girl was at it again). Audience participation was once again rife, as the majority of the crowd got to their feet to enjoy the last moments of the night. Finishing the set, Blunt commanded the audience to stand up and strike a pose, which he captured on his phone. As though we couldn’t love him anymore!
LAST CHANCE TO BE PART OF THE HIGHLY ACCLAIMED 2011 FAKE FESTIVALS TOUR! There is one support slot left for Sprotbrough Fake Festival, that is taking place on Saturday 23rd July, at Wheatley Hills Rugby Club. “We’re really excited to be coming back to Sprotbrough this year, and we can promise all festival-goers an unforgettable day as usual,” says Jez Lee, owner of Fake Festivals. Headlining at Sprotbrough Fake Festival this year are the tributes to Kings of Leon, Coldplay and the phenomenal Killers. They will be performing great sets of well-known anthems, as well as putting on a stage show as if you were at the real thing! “This will be our 5th year touring with Fake Festivals and we have seen it grow and grow. Each year it just gets better and better,” says Shane Crofts of Coldplace, the tribute to Coldplay. “The crowds are bigger and the atmosphere is electric. We just love seeing familiar faces in the crowd who come back year after year. It’s a special gig for us, each and everyone we play.” One lucky artist from the Sprotbrough region has the chance to be on the line-up for the festival and to support the international tribute acts. “We want to keep the festivals for the local community, which is why we try and use local support artists where possible,” continues Jez. “The support slots are a great way for up and coming bands and artists to showcase their material on a big stage with a professional sound desk and lighting system. In previous years we have had people from the music industry down such as NME Magazine, and also had The Gadget Show filming, so you never know who might be around to listen to you.” For the final slot, please visit www.fakefestivals.co.uk and complete the submission form for Sprotbrough Fake Festival.

LIVE REVIEW by Jim C Death Rays of Ardilla & Detroit Social Club The Harley - 17/02/11
before. Ferocious, aggressive blues-rock, there was a lot of testosterone in the room and the Death Rays are nothing if not alpha rock. The Sheffield sibling two-piece are regulars on the live scene now but they never fail to impress, and like the guy next to me, a convert at every gig is created. The Death Rays have too much energy on stage to not be impressive, but the best thing about them? How well they adapt to every venue they play, no two sets are the same, refreshing for the loyal fans who have started to appear at the gigs as the bands raw sounds garners a following. The brothers are talented enough to mix it up with a bit of freestyle every time. Consistently impressive, the Death Rays of Ardilla are a band to watch out for. The same however cannot be said for headline act Detroit Social Club. Admittedly some of the tunes were catchy and they have obviously spent a long time perfecting a well produced professional sound, but where as the Death Rays offer something new and exciting, Detroit Social Club rehash old songs, wearing their influences for everyone to see on their stripy t-shirt Indie sleeves. It was the predictability of it all that was the disappointment, after a couple of strums of some major chords you could guess where each song was going before they’d played them out. And the merchandise, t-shirts adorned with the logo F**k Pop, another mainstream Indie band trying to gain credibility by distancing themselves from a genre in which they so long to be a part of. It’s just all a bit too familiar. Pop is not a dirty word and the sooner Indie bands realise this, the sooner they can concentrate on their sound and not their carefully crafted image. Detroit Social Club sounded good and looked good but their anthemic guitar Pop was overshadowed by sharpness of the support act.
LES SAVY FAV Hmmm, how many Les Savy Fav references can we slip into this preview? What would wolves do? They’d go see Les Savy Fav at Corporation on the 27th of February of course. No yawn, yawn, yawn at this show, no bringing us down for we will make a lover out of you. The Fav famed for front man Tim Harrington’s eccentricity on stage will put on one of the best live shows in Sheffield this side of Best Coast (more on that one later). So brace yourself because as you get high and unhinged to dance the night away, and as the sweat descends late into Sunday night you’ll be thinking… • Why is this band so awesome? • I love Drowned in Sound • Can I pull off wearing a leotard and stockings on stage? Les Savy Fav have the catchiest guitar hooks around and seeing them is less crowd watch band, crowd go home, but more a fully interactive experience unto itself, those who saw them perform at Constellations Festival in Leeds recently will tell you no different. Expect to hear songs from the critically acclaimed new album ‘Root for Ruin’ as well as the old favourites Patty Lee et al. So reprobates resume because knowing how the world works is how to hold onto your genre, and Les Savy Fav are your genre. (Eleven song references, not bad). P.S. Wear sensible clothing because it’s going to be a dance-fest. Artist: Les Savy Fav Venue: The Corporation Doors: 7pm Price: £14adv Telephone: 0114 276 0262
RELEASES
artist: Kings Go Forth album: The Outsiders are Back Released: Out Now
The “new sound of old soul” has arrived, or returned. And while Kings Go Forth might have released their debut, The Outsiders are Back last year, their role in the underground soul revival will surely continue. Kings Go Forth are from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which – let it be known – isn’t Chicago. Still, it isn’t far off, and the band has clearly taken healthy inspiration from Chicago’s pantheon of soul greats – Lou Rawls, Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions, and co. Like all of them, Kings’ soul is smooth, but there’s a funkish bump and grind underneath it all. They recreate the rhythms and instrumentation of classic 45rpm soul, while still sounding strangely modern. It’s a welcome break from your Daniel Merriweather-Olly Murs crowd. Apparently there’s more to soul than a good voice and some marketready production. And Kings Go Forth know it. The Outsiders are Back has that nostalgic, crackling suggestion of vinyl that has been missing for so long in modern “soul”. They say they’re influenced by “the majesty of Black-American music”, and they’re not lying. ‘One Day’ opens the record in a fanfare of horns and bongos. It’s a stand-out dancer, but kicks off an album all too often geared for the floor; the roughand-ready ‘I Don’t Love You No More’ and tears-onthe-dancefloor ‘Don’t Take My Shadow’ (out now on 12”) not far away. There are more tender moments on the way though. ‘High On Your Love’ combines a solid soul rhythm section with vocals and horns blending in and out of one another. There’s even a cheeky wink at reggae in ‘1000 Songs’. Lead vocalist Danny Fernandez is more than able to carry all this off, backed by a diverse and original band with a natural feel for the classics. Tom Rollins
artist: The Streets album: Computer and Blues Released: Out Now Hats off to Mike Skinner. The jovial Brummy is retiring The Streets after five albums, and in this he is leaving in his wake one of the most successful and ground breaking legacies the UK urban scene has ever seen. The Streets first album ‘Original Pirate Material’ is still one of my favourite albums ever, a self produced, masterfully narrated piece of work that I have listened to from beginning to end without skipping any tracks on many occasions. Further albums ‘A Grand don’t come for Free’ and ‘Everything is Borrowed’ projected Skinner into the limelight and had moments of brilliance that cemented the excellent work achieved by OPM. ‘Computers and Blues’ is a more than fitting end to the Skinner adventure with moments of profound social commentary, motivational messaging, straight out dancefloor bangers and some tracks that project the frustation that may have contributed to Skinner calling time on The Streets. First single ‘Going through Hell’ combines many of these themes and with the help of The Music’s Robert Harvey Skinner delivers a stomping track that screams defiance and The Street’s self achieveing ethos. Other highlights include the brilliant Daft Punk esque ‘Without Thinking’ that brings back the fast living spirit of ‘Fit but don’t you know it’, the stylishly subtle ‘Those that don’t know’, protest anthem ‘Soldiers’ and final track ‘Lock the Locks’ will tug at the heart strings of loyal Streets fans, a soulful farewell that fittingly draws the curtains on the countries leading urban poet. Thanks for the beats Mike, you’ll be missed. Dave P

IRISH LEGENDS IN TOWN!
It may be some 40 years since they topped the charts regularly, but judging from the phone calls we’ve had here at the Mercury, many of you still remember The Bachelors! With hits such as “I Believe”, “My Diane” and “Charmaine” the boys more than held their own in the charts, jostling with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and other giants of the era for the Number One spot. Now original founder members Con and Dec Cluskey are back on the road, following their top five album recently, and we are privileged to present them at Crookes Social Club on Friday 18th March, as headline of an Irish Night which also features popular local band “Jack’s Rake”, the Francis Cassidy School of Irish Dance, and host and compere Noel Gee. Tickets for this fantastic night are only £10.00, and can be obtained by credit or debit card from the Mercury on 0114 2763701, or from the club.

BIG SOCIETY? VOLUNTEERS? DAVID - PLEASE LOOK TO THE CLUBS! CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Many of you are probably fed-up of hearing about David Cameron’s Big Society idea There is a great deal to report this week! The which seems to entail a lot of volunteers doing worthwhile word is spreading as the campaign gathers momentum, and more media groups pick up things in local communities. Whether or not these are meant the story. Following a double page feature in the Doncaster Free Press last week, many to replace paid professionals now under threat of losing their jobs is local radio stations across the north are debating the issues – only today Fylde FM in another matter- we won’t go into that here. Lancashire ran a phone-in and discussion, I would just like to ask our Dave following on from a similar feature on to look to the clubs- they have Monday night on Radio Nottingham. being doing the Big Society long The CIU are mobilising behind the group, before he was a twinkle in his and we hear rumours of clubs in the North parents’ eyes. Clubs have always East pulling together with special promotions been about volunteers going right to attract the customers back into the clubs. back to their early origins in the It’s becoming clearer by the day that in fact mid 19th century. There wasn’t much in the way of state provision there are many many people who care about in those days. No welfare state. Clubland, but didn’t know how to make their feelings known until Shaun provided the focus No pensions. No state education system. The workhouse was the with the group. only council provision for those The ball is rolling! Ultimately we need to poor souls who were completely ensure we can pressurise the politicians – and out of options. And that was really the only effective way of doing this is by the last resort. presenting them with a petition they cannot If working men wanted something ignore. doing, they had to do it for If you have a spare minute, please go to www. themselves. The Co-operative gopetition.com/petition/42425.html Movement is evidence of that just And add your signature to the list! as is the club movement. Men had to get themselves organised to set up a club, in their own time and out of their own pocket. They had to find the premises and get it shipshape for the provision of reading rooms, games facilities and maybe a small stage for concerts. Some early clubs had financial assistance from local patrons- rich aristocrats, MPs or clergymen who saw the good that clubs could do. But mostly the men shunned patronage early on, wanting the clubs to be theirs, run by and for themselves. The democratically elected club management committees were volunteers- there were very few paid position. Maybe there were perks along the way for some but overall, the jobs they did were not renumerated. This tradition continued into the 20th century and as clubs became more open to women, they also volunteered to such as to help run the children’s Christmas parties and day trips. Once they were allowed onto committees, they could carry out all the other tasks as well that need doing to keep clubs ticking over. Other volunteer work included raising money for charities, local and national, in a vast array of activities. Nothing much as changed in the 21st century. A lot of what gets done in clubs is done by committee and other club members chipping in, with the communal good of the club and the community in mind. All ages benefit, from kids to pensioners who look forward to the special club events that just wouldn’t happen without the volunteers being in place. 2011 has been designated the International Year of the Volunteer. I’d like to see club’s work in this area and all the contributions of their volunteers acknowledged, widely, loudly and proudly!

OF THE ITʼS SHOW VOICE NIGHTINGALE TIME FOLKS MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
There’s a buzz about the place this week. If you’ve been listening in to the Breakfast Show, you may well have heard that Sheffield legend John Shuttleworth is coming in to perform a few songs and you’re invited! Comedy creation of Sheffield born Graham Fellows, who also scored a massive chart hit as punk act Jilted John and that familiar chorus line “Gordon is a Moron” back in 1978, he’s appeared in many TV shows over the last few years, and even advertised Yorkshire Tea. With true unique inimitable style, look and trademark sound, John’s own innocent character and nature has captured a legion of fans. His songs feature largely on those little dilemmas in life, such as what to do when you find two margarine tubs opened in the fridge. Popular for such titles as “Pigeons in flight”, “My Austin Ambassador Y-reg” and “I can’t go back to savoury now”, his latest tour entitled “No more rolls” comes to the City Hall on March 9th, and ahead of the gig John will play a few numbers in front of a special Magic VIP crowd at our studios on Thursday March 3rd . If you’d like to come in to see him, just visit our website at magicam. co.uk or tune in for details. Trevor

The weather controls most things in life, why not let it control the lottery too! The Radio Nightingale lottery winning numbers are taken from Fahrenheit temperatures around Europe, with the last digit of six cities forming the winning sequence with which your numbers must match. The Sunshine lottery takes place 4 times per week (Monday Thursday) and has a daily jackpot of £10,000. Entry into the draw is £1 per line, with 35% of this going to Radio Nightingale. Other prices are available for matching 3, 4 or 5 numbers in the correct sequence. The Lightning lottery takes place just once per week, again £1 per line. This time though the jackpot is £25,000. Again other prices are available for 3, 4 or 5 numbers and prizes are not shared on either lottery if multiple people win the jackpot on the same day. 60% of your prize stake on this draw goes to Radio Nightingale. If you’re interested in joining either of our lotteries to win £10,000 or £25,000 you can register online at www. weatherfunds.co.uk or contact us for an information leaflet.

PETS CORNER
GIVING PETS THEIR MEDICINE
Taking your pet home from the vets with medication in tow can be an anxious time for owners. Vets make it look so easy administering tablets or medicine to your pet, but the reality of trying to do it in your own home can often be a very different story. It’s important that pets take the medicine prescribed to them, to help them get better. In some cases – such as long-term care for heart disease or diabetes, it can be the difference between life and death. During your consultation your vet will advise how your pet’s medicine should be given, and whether or not it should be given with food. If it can be given with food, it might be a tablet or capsule that’s safe to be pushed whole into a dog treat, mixed in with some pet food or wrapped in some meat. Not all tablets can be crushed and mixed with food. If tablets must be given whole, or your pet won’t take them in their food, your vet will be able to give you a demonstration of how to administer them. But PDSA are offering some top tips for administering tablets and medicine to pets: Dogs It’s best to do this with two people – especially if you have a larger dog! Encourage your dog to sit down, ideally with their back against a wall to try and stop them from wriggling away. One person should support your dog’s head by gently, but firmly, holding either side of the neck to stop them moving around. Wearing a pair of plastic gloves, the person giving the tablet should approach the dog from one side, take hold of the upper jaw and move it upwards and backwards (this makes the lower jaw drop, so that the tablet can be put inside the mouth). Try to place the tablet as far back as possible on the tongue. Close the mouth immediately and make sure the nose is pointing upwards. Then carefully massage the throat to encourage the dog to swallow. When your dog licks their lips, it’s safe to assume that they have swallowed the tablet. If you or your dog find the experience too stressful, contact your vet, as the medicine may be available in another form such as a liquid or injection. Cats As with dogs – two pairs of hands are better than one! Place your cat safely on a table or worktop.
The first person should gently, but firmly, hold the cat from behind. Wearing plastic gloves the second person should open the cat’s mouth by placing one hand on its muzzle and positioning their thumb just behind one canine tooth, and index finger behind the other canine tooth. Gently move the head back. Using the other hand, pull the jaw down and drop the tablet onto the tongue, as far back as possible. Close the mouth and rub the cat’s throat until it swallows. As with dogs, if your cat licks their lips, this usually means that they have swallowed the tablet. Liquid Medication Normally when treatment involves liquid medication, your vet will provide a syringe for the appropriate dosage. Again, some liquid medication can be mixed in with food, but all of the food must be eaten to ensure that the pet has received the prescribed dose. Administering liquid medication straight into your pet’s mouth is similar to giving tablets. So hold your pet’s head as described, but this time keep the head level. With the free hand, gently pull the jaw down slightly and squirt the liquid into the side of the mouth. If you continue to experience problems in giving your pet its medicine, speak to your vet for advice. For further information about PDSA or advice on caring for a range of pets please visit www.pdsa.org.uk.

RACING POST CHASE HEADS THE BILL AT KEMPTON WITH OTHER NH ACTION AT NEWCASTLE AND CHEPSTOW HORSE RACING by Timelord
This weekend Kempton stages the prestigious Racing Post Chase – one of the top handicaps of the season and often a good pointer to Cheltenham success. Supporting it on the card are several other Graded races that also could have a bearing on things at the Festival. Newcastle and Chepstow provide the supporting meetings with some pretty tricky looking handicaps on their cards. Newcastle’s big race is the marathon Eider Chase over 4 miles 1 furlong. This will take some getting on the predicted heavy going and they could be walking at the finish. In Ireland there is a fairly ordinary meeting at Navan. On the flat Lingfield stages another all-weather card. I shall concentrate on Kempton this week. In the first race Brendan Powell’s Two Kisses may be good enough to take care of some decent juveniles. Two runs ago she was second to Grandouet at Ascot and that run shows she may be able to just edge this. First Fandango is unexposed and could provide most opposition with Kazzene and Meetings Man proving best of the rest. In the second race I like the look of Kerada. Nicky Henderson’s mare had good hurdling form to her name and looks to have set off really well over fences. She can continue on her upward curve by landing this Grade 2 affair. The Knoxs may prove best of the rest. For the Racing Post Chase I am relying on Tatenen (Nap) to follow up his recent Ascot romp, but the opposition here looks pretty classy. After his good run in the King George Nacarat must enter calculations, as should Fistral Beach and Mostly Bob, both of whom ran really well last time out. This race should prove to a cracker to watch and nearly all the entrants have chances of sorts. Another who ran well recently was Hey Big Spender who beat Fine Parchment over 2m 5f at Warwick. In the 3.35 the unbeaten Shuil Royale should prove too strong for good field. Andhaar has claims for second spot and both Empire Levant and Whoops a Daisy look pretty useful. At Newcastle the Eider Chase can go to Morgan Be who should run well off his light weight and can go in at a decent price. Companero looks best of the rest. In the other televised race, the Blue Square Sprint Series Final at Lingfield at 2.10, recent scorer Qadar can follow up and land this prize. Bold Ring, Al Gillani and old stager Dvinsky may give him most to do. Selections: As previously I have provided a short list for each race in case of non runners. The list is in order of preference reading from left to right. As always remember to check race times and for non runners. Kempton: 1.55 Two Kisses, First Fandango, Kazzene, Meetings Man 2.25 Kerada, Lord Ragnar, Mister Stickler, Rackham Lerouge, Osric, the Knoxs 3.00 Tatenen (Nap), Fistral Beach, Mostly Bob, Polyfast, 3.35 Shuil Royale, Andhaar, Empire Levant, Whoops A Daisy 4.10 Sarando, Numide, Warne’s Way, Paint the Clouds
STEELERS GO NINE POINTS CLEAR ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle
The Sheffield Steelers are riding high after beating the Cardiff Devils twice last weekend, sitting at the top spot in the EIHL table and nine points clear of their closest rivals for the title. They now need just six wins out of eight to secure the title, with four of those games being played with home advantage. On Saturday the Sheffield Steelers Supporters’ Club took four buses down to Cardiff for the big game and they, as well as fans that travelled down in their own cars, gave the Steelers fantastic vocal support. The nail-biting game saw Sheffield take the lead with just 52 seconds played, player-coach Ben Simon scoring a short-handed goal after Jeremy Domish took a penalty for boarding. The first period was a close one, with no more goals scored until the final two minutes when Scott Matzka pulled one back for the Devils on the powerplay. The Devils took the lead in the second as Craig Weller put the Devils ahead with a goal at 28:32, much to the delight of the home crowd, and Matzka added his second of the night to put Cardiff 3-1 ahead. Robert Dowd scored his 24th goal for the club to bring the scores to 3-2 at 38:13, and it was the Steelers who scored first in the third period, Rod Sarich scoring a powerplay goal at 43:51 as Brad Voth sat a two-minute penalty for roughing. Scott Matzka completed his hat-trick with an almostlast-minute goal at 18:50 to take the game into overtime, but just 1:41 of the 5 minute sudden death overtime period was needed, Mark Thomas scoring his fourth goal of the 2010-11 campaign to win the

I wonder if any of you listened to BBC Radio Lancashire’s “At the water’s edge” with Martin James? If you do, then you will have heard me this week! I recently travelled up to Blackburn to record an interview with Martin in which we discussed my club work, Pallatrax sponsorship and various other angling related topics; all good fun and I’m hoping to ‘appear; again soon! I’ve been looking at a few more tackle items this week to make my fishing a little bit easier. Gardner continue to produce innovative gadgets for when I’m out on my own, and the Angle Camera Bracket certainly makes things easier for those times when you need a helping hand...... I really hate ‘self take’ camera work. Many anglers struggle with it, many can’t be bothered, but when you DO catch that fish of a lifetime, it’s worthy of a trophy shot, and you are on your own, well, then there isn’t really any other option. As an angler, you need to do it correctly and quickly to prevent any problems and keep the fish safe. For years, I’ve had a little brass screw in bankstick adaptor which allows me to take the shot only in landscape format. This means I have to get it dead level to get a good shot, but recently I’ve been asked for shots in portrait style, so I had a trawl around my local tackle shop to see what I could find. Gardner’s gadget caught my eye, so I invested £10.50 and took it to the bank side to see what it could do; hopefully a fish would come along to

photograph! Basically, it consists of a solid tripod attachment fitted with a 360 degree rotational ball and socket joint to which the camera attaches. The ball and socket joint slots down through 90 degrees into a collar which can then be locked into place using an integral extended ‘T’ bar which screws tightly against the ball element. It’s a simple arrangement which seems to work extremely well and it ensures it stays in the correct position. Constructed of high quality steel and brass, the heavily knurled main body gives easy grip, even with cold fingers, and the ‘T’ bar locks the adaptor solidly for even the heaviest cameras to prevent droop or slippage when firmly tightened. The Gardner Camera Angle even has a protective plastic washer to safeguard the base of your camera and will fit any bankstick/camera combination so you can be sure of a steady shot to capture your big fish for posterity! Available at all good retailers, online or from www. gardnertackle.co.uk, priced at around £10.50 My ‘Carp Talk’ magazine North West round up continues to feature catch reports from the fisheries throughout the NW, so if you have a fish you think worthy of gracing the pages, then please let me know. If you have a great catch you would like to share with the readers of “Angler’s Corner” or details of your favourite venue, then I’m sure our readers would like to find out more!

On Sunday over 4500 fans descended on Sheffield Arena to watch the return leg, including two buses full from Cardiff. Last week it was announced that a special celebratory game featuring teams of veteran players from each club would take place between the two teams before the 2011-12 season, and the Steelers took the opportunity to announce their first “signing” for that game: ex-Coach Mike Blaisdell. Cardiff opened the scoring for the night with a goal from Stuart MacRae at 2:37, and Rob Dowd had the home fans on their feet as he levelled the scores at 7:21. With both sides battling it out Rob Globke scored the Steelers’ second, assisted by Ashley Tait and new Dad Joey Talbot, who’s wife Natalie gave birth to the couple’s first child last week. In the second and third period Cardiff could not penetrate the Steelers’ defences. Jeff Legue stepped out of the penalty box to pick up a pass from Derek Campbell, who pulled off some amazingly fancy footwork to get the puck to Legue, who fired a shot past Cardiff netminder Stevie Lyle and score the only goal of the second period. In the third period Ashley Tait scored a fantastic short-handed goal at 46:18, and Rob Dowd finished what he had started, scoring the Steelers’ final goal at 16:25. The Devils pulled back a consolation goal at 57:17, but it was too little too late and the Steelers won their second match-up of the weekend. The Steelers’ next home game is on Thursday February 24th. Tickets are available from the Motorpoint Arena box office (0114 256 56 56). On March 20th the Steelers will be holding their annual Teddy Bear Toss and Auction, with all proceeds being split between the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Amy’s House Respite Nursery. Last year over £800 was raised by the Teddy Auction, which saw bears made by the players and kindly donated by Build-a-Bear Warehouse (Meadowhall) auctioned off on the night.

As time ran down to the end of normal time the Rovers put in their best attack of the game, with Wilson putting the final ball from the left byline and the Swansea defence having difficulty clearing their lines. Time ran out and Swansea claimed the three points but the Rovers gave a much improved performance in the second half.

MILLERS BACK TO WINNING WAYS MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United got back to winning ways after a 2-0 victory over Accrington Stanley which propelled the Millers back into the automatic promotion places. In a game that was bereft of goalmouth action the Millers were the more clinical in the final third with an Omar Daley strike, his first for the Millers since joining on loan from Bradford City, and a late Adam Le Fondre goal enough to see of the visitors. Ronnie Moore handed a debut to Liam Henderson, who finalised his loan deal from Watford earlier in the day. Marcus Marshall and Tom Newey also returned, and Daley was handed a full debut after impressing as a substitute on Saturday against Oxford. Ryan Taylor and Ian Thomas-Moore missed out through injury, Callum Kennedy was suspended, and Mark Randall dropped to the bench as the Millers returned to a 4-4-2 formation. he showed some skill to find a bit of space, but his eventual shot was deflected behind for a corner. After a pedestrian start to the second half by both teams the Millers finally broke the deadlock after 57 minutes. A ball into the area fell to the feet of Henderson and after good footwork he turned his man before being upended, the loose ball fell to Daley who slammed the ball home for his first goal for the club from 12 yards out. Stanley responded soon after with a shot which tested Warrington. Gornell again was looking a threat in attack and when he pulled the trigger on the turn from 20 yards it brought a smart low stop from the Millers number one. A minute later Warrington was extended again when Luke Joyce hammered in a ferocious strike from 25 yards which Warrington tipped over the ball. From the resulting corner a cross came in from Sean McConville but Gornell headed over from eight yards out. Daley was denied a second goal in stoppage time when he was played in on goal after a great run by Law, but after calmly slotting the ball beyond Ian Dunbavin his celebrations were halted by the offside flag. MICKY NO QUITTER GAFFERʼS NOTES www.sufc.co.uk
United’s plight and long wait for a win under Micky Adams will not result in him walking away from his job. He takes his team to Scunthorpe on Tuesday looking for his first three pointer at what would be a significant venue given the positions of both clubs, and insists that his own personal position doesn’t concern him: “I am not concerned with Micky Adams, just the club and everybody else concerned with it, including, of course, the supporters. “I have had promotions at other clubs and been happier for others than for myself. I am a big boy and I won’t quit - and that is nothing to do with United being my club. “Why should I? I am working as hard as I possibly can, mostly with what I have inherited here. I was under no illusions that this was going to be a tough job when I came. “I have brought Dave Bassett in to help and we know that we have to have long term strategy. My contract is for two and a half years and we have to have time to put the strategy into practice. “At the moment people can’t see the wood for the trees but we are working very hard behind the scenes to make things happen for the better. “Okay, I might lose my job eventually but that is not a message I am getting from within the club or with the local media at the moment and it is a long way from my thoughts.”
ALL HUFF, NO PUFF! BLADES MAD by Paul Holland
It’s now been ten games since Micky Adams took charge; since then and are still searching for a win prior to their trip to Glanford Park last night. Though, whilst it must seem all doom and gloom following that defeat to Palace at the weekend which spread the Eagles to a five point gap a lot must be taken into account that United aren’t playing poorly. They have huffed, and puffed in front of goal with little results – that may not be acceptable to most fans and don’t get me wrong, it is worrying that the defence is considering goals whilst none or not enough are being fired home at the right

United have allowed Jamie Ward to leave Bramall Lane and join Derby County on loan until the end of the season. The recent arrivals of Sam Vokes and Bjorn Helge Riise have allowed Micky Adams to accept Derby’s proposal. Ward has featured 21 times for the Blades this season, scoring one goal, a penalty against Aston Villa in the FA Cup in January, but his season has been plagued with hamstring problems. In his Blades career, after joining from Chesterfield in January 2009, Ward has scored 11 goals in 48 starts and 22 more appearances from the substitute’s bench.
PLANS CHANGE BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Sheffield United’s half term open training session at Bramall Lane on Thursday has been amended due to the recent wet weather. Concerns that a training session just 48 hours before the home match against Derby County might harm the surface of the pitch have led to the changes. The first team squad training session has been dropped, but a signing session with the players will now take place in the Legends of the Lane from 1-2.30pm. Dave McCarthy, United’s head of operations, said: “It is unfortunate but the recent poor weather means we have had to change our plans regarding the training session. We aim to have an open training session during the school holidays in the future.” The Blades Superstore will retain its special offers with huge reductions and kids shirts at only £5. Anyone spending over £5 in the Shop on Thursday will get a limited edition 2010/11 season players’ poster that fans can get signed on the day.
end. Last week we touched that an Attacking-Midfielder should be drafted in; I still stand by that claim, he would give the front two a massive boost and hopefully would grab a few goals in the process. Darren Ambrose would have proved a suitable choice in pre-season; his goal on Saturday was his 21st of the campaign in a struggling Palace side. The Blades host Derby County this weekend, another side who could drop into the relegation mix; I would be more than happy with that if it came at the Blades expense of Championship survival. But getting points on the board is important right now and if they didn’t get anything at Scunthorpe then surely at least a point can be picked up against the Rams.
from others and being adaptable helped him to find global success in football and property. Kevin was at an ‘In Conversation With...’ discussion at Sheffield Hallam University, as part of the University’s special nights out season. Speaking to a packed lecture theatre, he spoke about his working class roots, his success as an entrepreneur and the challenges he faced in the boardroom at Bramall Lane. Speaking to the audience in the Pennine Theatre, he said: “Everyone makes mistakes and the fear of failure drives you on in business. I’m lucky that over the years I’ve had partnerships with many great people and made some great friends. “Business can be exciting - it can be stress, strain and hassle, but it can be exciting. You’ve got to adapt to be successful in business, especially overseas. Don’t always believe you know what’s right, but learn from your partners.” Kevin originally studied at Sheffield Hallam, where he trained to be a surveyor. He has been at the forefront of sport in South Yorkshire since 2008, when he became Chairman of Sheffield United football club. The Sheffield-born entrepreneur shed light on a colourful career that includes the high-profile high court battle with West Ham United, multi million pound business deals and ownership of a Chinese football club, Chengdu Blades. He said: “I never set out to pursue an exciting career. My ethic was always just to drive myself forward. I’ve always enjoyed learning and I wanted to learn the business of football. I’ve taken a lot of risks and had a lot of able people working with me. If I’ve got an Achilles Heel it’s that I can’t resist an opportunity.” Kevin also had some advice for the business studies students in the audience. He said: “An entrepreneur is a leader, not an executive. You have to work with executives, but you’re different, and it can get lonely. And you’ve got to have humour - be a serious businessperson but never be a serious person.”

OWLS DUMPED OUT OF THE CUP MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday exited the FA Cup on Saturday, going down 3-0 to Premiership outfit Birmingham City at St Andrew’s. Goals from Jean Beausejour, Obafemi Martins and David Murphy did the damage, although the Owls did have moments of their own going forward. But the Blues had the clinical edge in the final third to progress to round six, leaving Wednesday to concentrate their efforts on climbing the League 1 table. After a solid start to the cup clash, the visitors saw that promise undone by Brum on six minutes, when Lee Bowyer burst down the left side of the penalty area and cut back for Beausejour to drill past Nicky Weaver. The Owls responded well, though, and were almost level inside five minutes but Neil Mellor’s low effort was deflected wide for a corner. Play soon reverted to the other end and Keith Fahey forced a fine save from Weaver with a free kick right on the edge of the box. Weaver was called into action from the next attack, diving low to avert Beausejour’s low drive round the post. Blues enjoyed most of the possession and the second goal that was looming duly arrived on 16 minutes. Martins showed the Owls’ defence a clean pair of heels and advanced to slot home in front of the 4,000+ travelling fans from Sheffield. Birmingham suffered a blow when Alexander Hleb

was stretchered off after a mistimed tackle by James O’Connor, before the Owls made a change when Richard Hinds came on for Mark Reynolds. Cameron Jerome went close for the home side as half time approached but Wednesday also threatened when Michael Morrison’s shot from ten yards was blocked by Stephen Carrr. The Owls came closer still just before the break. Daniel Jones did well to shake off the attention of Stephen Carr and slide a low cross across the danger zone but the ball just evaded the loitering Mellor. Wednesday made two more changes for the second half, with Michael Morrison and O’Connor making way for Mark Beevers and Liam Palmer. But the pendulum stayed the way of Birmingham, who extended their lead on 52 minutes. A curling corner from the right fell kindly to Murphy to hit high into the net from close range and effectively put Birmingham out of reach. Martins could and should have made it four moments later but clipped over the bar following good work from substitute David Bentley. Wednesday rallied and enjoyed pockets of possession as the remainder of the game unfolded but couldn’t breach the Blues’ backline and the contest petered out with Birmingham’s route to the quarter finals safely secure.
POOR DEFENDING COSTLY GAFFERʼS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk
Gary Megson once more rued the poor defending that saw the Owls exit the FA Cup at Birmingham on Saturday. Following a steady start from Wednesday to the fifth round clash, the Blues scored from their first attack after six minutes and netted again ten minutes later. Both goals came as a result of uncertain defending, as Megson told the press after the game: “It’s been the same since I arrived here, poor defending has cost us goals. Birmingham didn’t have to work for those goals because we gifted the goals to them. “We cannot keep defending like that, players have to improve and they know that. We had chances of our own and played well at the start of the game, we were on the front foot. But the defending has let us down again.” Megson did take some positives from St Andrew’s, namely the performances of Reda Johnson and substitute Liam Palmer. Birmingham: Doyle, Murphy, He added: “I thought Reda Johnson (Mutch 63), Carr, Johnson was our best player. Parnaby, Hleb (Bentley 26), He was head and shoulders Beausejour, Fahey, Bowyer, above everybody else. Jerome (Phillips 46), Martins “He looked like a Premiership Unused substitutes: Foster, Larsson, Gardner, Zigic player and that is the kind of standard I want to see week Owls: Weaver, Spurr, R in, week out. BEST IN THE LAND OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
It’s well documented in S6 that Wednesdayites are the best fans on the planet - and extremely welcome when our magnificent support is recognised elsewhere. Following the Owls’ FA Cup trip to Premiership side Birmingham on Saturday - when Wednesday were vociferously backed by over 4,000 fans - we received the following message from St Andrew’s season ticket holder Allan Pearcey:. “We supporters nationally always appear in the Press whenever the ‘yobs’ are active. But very little is ever recorded as below. “As a Birmingham City season ticket holder for many years, may I express my sincere thanks and admiration for the way your 4,000 plus fans who attended the cup-tie last Saturday at St Andrew’s behaved. “They really were a credit to the game, and at a time when only bad news regarding supporters seems to make the news, shows that there is still a majority of fans who are as ‘good as gold’. “Even though the match was not going their way, they were still singing and enjoying themselves up to and after the final whistle. “Thanks you ‘Owls’ for coming to Birmingham. Thanks for your very vocal support for your team. And hopefully, please come again one day (when you get promoted - not us relegated of course!” Everyone at Hillsborough would like to thank Allan for making the time and effort to send us his thoughts. And as ever, our thanks also go to you wonderful Wednesdayites who make this club so special.

WELL. WE BLEW IT! FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by J.C.Snugsville I think I’ve said a couple of times in this column in recent weeks that January and February were crucial months. Well, they were. And we blew it. Even the staunchest of optimists would struggle to argue that we could still gain promotion, and the dourest pessimists are using the dreaded ’R’ word with increasing frequency. Rarely however are these two groups of people proven correct and so it would seem more than likely to the sane ones of us that we will stutter and limp and huff and puff to a finish somewhere in between tenth and eighteenth spot. Here’s a cliché: ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’. Here’s another: ‘Rebuilding a football club is a marathon not a sprint’. Although these statements are becoming more common than tab ends on the floor outside pubs they are in reality the gritty truth. Much as it pains me to see us lose in the miserable fashion in which we have been doing, at least Gary Megson is under no illusions about what he has inherited squad wise. He is hardly in danger of being deceived by winning a manager of the month award in his first one due to the players miraculously finding great form only to lose it again the month after. Gary has been quite candid in his post match press conferences and I think its quite clear to all concerned that there will be a mass exodus from the playing staff this summer. So, there we have it. Sadly, in February, the only thing I can look forward to S6 wise is August. One thing is for sure – no manager will have the opportunity to paint a masterpiece on a blank canvass like Gary Megson will next season. His fire and passion for the cause combined with the resources of Mandaric should at least give us something with which to mount a promotion offensive. And we may even do the double over United whilst we’re at it!!
stadium. We had a fantastic response with 78 people taking part on Valentines Weekend, with some in fantastic fancy dress. We achieved our target and the £19,000 raised will go towards offering clinical, practical and emotional support for families affected by childhood cancer. “The South Stand was an amazing venue and I would also like to thank the team at Sheffield Wednesday for allowing it to take place.”
