COPLEYʼS COLUMN

This has been a week of highs and lows, both domestically and internationally Events in Libya have overshadowed the terrible devastation in Japan as most of the rest of the world have united to put a stop to the antics of ‘mad dog’ Colonel Gadaffi, who has been using military force against his own civilian people. As in Iraq, it seems that in countries that generate fabulous wealth due to their abundance of oil, there is one ambitious bully boy who wants it all to himself and is prepared to go to any lengths to steal it from his fellow countrymen. Evidence of Gadaffi’s plundering is in the fact that his playboy son spent one hundred and forty million pounds in a single year enjoying the good life. David Cameron has greatly enhanced his profile by his speedy condemnation of these atrocities, and has been instrumental in galvanising the United Nations to take military action to prevent any further loss of life to innocent citizens. Notable absentees in this cause have been Russia, China and surprisingly Germany. The Sun newspaper, never shy of coming up with an impact front page, came up with a classic... ‘Top Guns 1 Mad Dog 0’ I have never been impressed by bullies, as in every case, they are cowards. This prompt action by our Prime Minister will improve his kudos in a week when the budget will doubtless, though necessary, will be hugely unpopular, particularly in the socialist republic of South Yorkshire. England’s rugby union team let the country down by being soundly thrashed by Ireland, giving the ‘Paddys’ good reason to lower a few pints of Guinness, as if they hadn’t got it already with St. Patrick’s Day. It always amazes me that this day is celebrated in this country by the English a lot more than St Georges Day. The only explanation I can think of is to do with the consumption of alcohol. England cricket team did much to redress the balance winning a real nail biter against the West Indies to progress to the quarter finals of the Cricket

World Cup, where they face a tough game against Sri Lanka on Saturday. Perhaps the surprise sporting result of the weekend was the fantastic victory at Bramall Lane, where the Blades completely outplayed promotion hopeful Leeds United by two goals to nil. The Owls lost by the same score in the Sky televised match against an impressive Southampton. Chesterfield continued their promotion push with the televised demolition of fellow promotion hopefuls Rotherham and their hopes were further enhanced by second placed Bury losing and third placed Wycombe Wanderers only managing a draw. Watching the game, they will both give both Sheffield teams a good game next season, assuming they get promoted, the Blades are relegated and the Owls remain in division one. Should Rotherham be also promoted, there will be some very tasty local derbys next season, attracting good crowds, which will be a great financial boost to them all. We were looking forward to seeing the legendary Frank White at the Horse and Jockey at nearby Unstone on Saturday night, but Frank was sadly ill and could not perform. However, this particularly well run pub had a ready replacement in my favourite band of all time, Junkyard Dog, who were doubtless refreshed after having their first Saturday off last week in ten years. As usual, Junkyard Dog were excellent and played to a capacity audience. I called the next day to pick up my car and see my neighbours, Pat and Ron, who dine there every Sunday. I sampled a bit of food from the carvery and have to say it was superb. It seems that never a week goes by without having to report the passing of someone in showbusiness, and this week is no exception. We mourn the passing of Jet Harris, excellent bass guitarist with the Shadows, backing group of Sir Cliff Richard, and having many hits on their own, including the legendary ‘Apache’ Jet died aged 71, losing his fight with cancer.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

There were these two cows, chatting over the fence between their fields. The first cow said, “I tell you, this mad-cow-disease is really pretty scary. They say it is spreading fast; I heard it hit some cows down on the Johnson Farm.” The other cow replies, “I ain’t worried, it don’t affect us ducks.” A blind man with a Guide dog at his side walks into a grocery store. The man walks to the middle of the store, picks up the dog by the tail, and starts swinging the dog around in circles over his head. The store manager, who has seen all this, thinks this is quite strange. So, he decides to find out what’s going on. The store manager approaches the blind man swinging the dog and says, “Pardon me. May I help you with something.” The blind man says, “No thanks. I’m just looking around.” Fred got home from his Sunday round of golf later than normal and very tired. “Bad day at the course?” his wife asked. “Everything was going fine,” he said. “Then Harry had a heart attack and died on the 10th tee.” “Oh, that’s awful!” “You’re not kidding. For the whole back nine it was hit the ball, drag Harry, hit the ball, drag Harry.” The Pope met with the College of Cardinals to discuss a proposal from Shimon Peres, the former leader of Israel. “Your holiness,” said one of the Cardinals, “Mr. Peres wants to determine whether Jews or Catholics are superior, by challenging you to a golf match.” The Pope was greatly disturbed, as he had never held a golf club in his life. “Not to worry,” said the Cardinal, “we’ll call America and talk to Jack Nicklaus. We’ll make him a Cardinal, he can play Shimon Peres... We can’t lose!” Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made and, of course, Jack was honored and agreed to play. The day after the match, Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of his success in the match. “I came in second, your Holiness,” said Nicklaus. “Second?!!” exclaimed the surprised Pope. “You came in second to Shimon Peres?!!” “No,” said Nicklaus, “second to Rabbi Woods.”

Frankenstein’s Wedding We were promised a ‘magical’ retelling of Mary Shelly’s classic horror story in Frankenstein’s Wedding, but what I watched was a half live indie music event that was more Rocky Horror Picture Show than the brooding and evocative spectacle I was expecting. Twelve thousand people were invited to join Doctor Victor Frankenstein and his bride for their wedding at Kirkstall Abbey (in Leeds) on Saturday night, but even a crowd of that magnitude couldn’t inject any electricity into this event. Like Frankenstein’s monster, this was a mishmash of badly sewn together ideas that failed on just about every level. A mixture of pre-recorded material, live music, and the filmed live wedding itself, while each individual item might have worked fine on its own, the show as a whole was more tragic affair than love affair. The decision to use pre-recorded scenes and live action was utterly baffling as the difference between the two was massive and only set to jar the live scenes even further from the integrity of the show. Victor Frankenstein (Andrew Gower) stretched the part of scientific genius to the limit. I couldn’t imagine him giving me directions to the Wicker, never mind him discovering the forbidden secrets to life itself, and with Lacey Turner as Elizabeth, it was all a bit pantomime – they clearly learned how to act from their time at the Eastenders School of Overacting. Criticisms aside, this was an ambitious (perhaps overly so) bit of television that’s a far cry from the fixation on reality and Z list celebrity shows we’re currently being spoon fed. However, with live episodes of Eastenders and Coronation Street being so flawlessly shot, I can’t help but think that this simple story should have gone a lot more fluidly. It wasn’t bad; it just wasn’t nearly as good as it should have been. A missed opportunity. Catch it up on Iplayer. Or don’t.

The Only Way is Essex Set eyeballs to Vajazzle, for The Only Way is Essex is back and the first episode saw the Brentwood gang in full form as the play out the mockumentary of their utterly vapid lives with fake boobs, tans and very false smiles. The show that took the world by storm features a cast that makes the average Big Brother housemate look like a Mensa member and with dialogue that the love child of Katie Price and Peaches Geldof would find shallow. I can’t imagine any of the cast can walk and chew gum at the same time, but, despite that, the show is impossibly compulsive viewing. Will Mark and Lauren ever get together? Does anyone care? Probably not. But The Only Way is Essex is back and worse - it looks set to spawn a series of spin offs: The Only Way is Liverpool and The Only Way is Newcastle… Oh, the horror!

NEWS

WESTLIFE

After a hugely successful UK tour in 2010, Kings of the charts Westlife will be hitting the road once again in March 2011 to wow audiences up and down the country. The boys will return to Sheffield when they play two nights at the Motorpoint Arena on the 28th & 29th March 2011. Revered for their spectacular live shows, created with visionary William Baker (Kylie, Leona, Bjork), the band will be visiting arenas in 9 cities throughout March 2011. The shows will include the band’s biggest hits as well as tracks off their 2009 double platinum album Where We Are and from the brand new album they are currently in the studio working on, due for release in November 2010. Westlife are among the world’s most prolific touring acts, with nine sell out tours already under their belts, including playing to a sell out crowd at the legendary Croke Park in Dublin. They have sold more tickets at London’s Wembley Arena than any other act and have played a record number of dates there, an amazing 25. No pop band can compare to Westlife’s extraordinary success, having been certified by the BPI as the biggest selling band of the past decade. During their 11 years at the top of pop’s hierarchy, the band has sold over 43 million records globally. In the UK alone they have scored ten multi-platinum albums and a record breaking 14 No.1 hits (behind only Elvis and The Beatles). They have also picked up innumerable awards and appeared on hundreds of magazine covers around the world. They are the only recording artists to win the prestigious Record Of The Year an incredible four times (other top awards include two BRITS and an MTV Europe Award). Westlife will be joined on tour by Female Quintet Wonderland. At first glance, Wonderland’s arrival on the pop scene seems almost rocket-fuelled. The part-Irish, part English quintet - Sharon Condon, Corrina Durran, Jodi Albert, Kasey Smith and Leigh Learmont - were hand-picked by Louis Walsh at a 2008 audition in Dublin. Since then they’ve since sashayed before primetime TV shows and stadium audiences of nearly 85,000. They release debut single and radio hit Not A Love Song, today on Mercury Records. Wonderland’s emergence owes plenty to their combined vocal effervescence. With five lead singers working in unison, this is a band big on wide-ranging harmonies and soulful pop hooks; a girl group taking their lead from substance rather than style. The girls have spent the past 2 years since their successful auditions, writing, recording and team bonding. Wonderland have already supported Westlife and Boyzone on tour, and made an appearance at the 2010 Isle of Wight Festival. They also had their own ITV2 show – Louis Walsh & Kian Egan’s Next Big Thing: Wonderland that aired last Autumn. Tickets for Westlife’s second show at the Motorpoint Arena on Tuesday 29th March 2011 are priced £40.50 (may be subject to booking fee) are now on sale. A very limited number of tickets are still available for their opening night in Sheffield on the 28th March. To book tickets call in person at the venue, book online at www.motorpointarena.co.uk or call the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Celestial Mythology Naming the Zodiac Signs We have the Ancient Greeks to thank for naming the Zodiac signs. Have you ever wondered why Taurus is represented by a Bull, while Leo is a lion? Well it’s all down to the ancient Greeks. When astrologers looked to the skies they saw various animals and heroes from Greek mythology, which they believed the Gods had placed there personally. Zodiac means ‘Circle of Animals’ as animals and hybrids make up most of the Constellation. Aries the Ram - Murder plot Aries originates from the legend of King Athamus who tried to murder his son Phrixius. When a golden ram allowed itself to be slaughtered instead of Phrixius, Zeus, gave the animal immortality by creating a constellation in the stars in the shape of a Ram. Taurus the Bull - Animal Magnetism Zeus was married to Goddess Hera Europa when she caught his eye. Knowing Europa’s love of animals he appeared to her in disguise as a magnificent White Bull. Europa climbed on Zeus back thinking Zeus was a white bull. But then he changed into an eagle and seduced Europa. He was so pleased with himself that he made a pattern of stars in the shape of a White Bull. Gemini the Twins - Life for a Life Though twins Castor and Pollux were born of different farthers they were classed as twins. Castor was wounded in battle, Pollux was distraught and killed himself. Zeus paid tribute to the twins and created the Constellation of Gemini. Cancer the Crab - Claws Out While Hercules another son of Zeus fought a bloody battle an enormous monster crab was deployed to attack his feet and legs. Hercules stamped the Crab to death. However legend tells the Goddess Hera granted the crab immortality among the stars. Leo the Lion - Roaring success Leo, Lion of Nemea, he had an armour plated skin and felt no pain. Hercules fought the lion to death and wore his armoured skin as a trophy. Zeus was so impressed he placed the Lions shape in the Heavens. Some historians believe that the practice of using the Sun, Moon and Planets relative to this ring of stars to predict the future. Priests in Sumeria, Babylon and Assyria associated the constellations and planets with their Gods. Correlation between positions of heavenly bodies and events such a famine and war were revealed, what the

Virgo The Maiden - Lost in Paradise This sign represents Astraea the Goddess of Chastiy. Zeus gave Pandora a box, “never open it” he said, she did and released evil into the world. The Gods went back to Mount Olympus but Astraea loved Earth so much she was the last to leave. To celebrate her love, Zeus set her in the sky as the symbol of the Virgin Maiden. Libra the Scales - Justice for All Themis is the Goddess of Justice. As legend goes, they where postioned in the sky by Zeus. So that Justice could be maintained. Scorpio - The Scorpion Insect Killer A giant Scorpion was sent to kill the hunter Orion, who had become the envy of the Gods. The Scorpion stung Orion to death. In respect of the titanic struggle Zeus immortalised the pair in the stars. Sagittarius - Immortal Wound Hercules accidently shot the Centaur Cheiron in the leg with a posionous arrow. The Centaur who was immortal was in constant pain. In a bid to end his agony, Cheiron swapped places with the God Prometheus, who had been punished by Zeus and left chained to a rock for an Eagle ready to devour his liver. This was the only way Cheiron could die. Zeus was impressed by this so he honoured Cheiron with his own star sign. Capricorn - Four legged Friend Capricorn is seen as a Goat. Zeus`s father the cannibal Cronos, ate the children to stop them challenging him as adults. Zeus fled to the woods and he was looked after by the Goat Amalthea who fed him her milk. Zeus now as an adult killed his father Cronos and showed his gratitude to Amalthea by setting her in the stars for all eternity. Aquarius the Water Carrier - A Watery Grave In a Greek version of the Biblical flood Zeus drowned the Earth under the waters of heaven. The God Aquarius poured water from a large vessel. A new race was born when sole survivors Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha threw stones over their shoulders and turned them into humans. In recogintion of Aquarius’ part in his plan, Zeus created the star concellation of the Water Carrier. Pisces the Fish - Great Escape Aphrohide and her son Eros were set upon by the sea monster Typhon. Zeus saved them by transforming them into fish. He put their image into the heavens for all to see. TIP THE SCALES IN YOUR FAVOUR Slimming World has the answer to escaping the 9 to 5 treadmill and running your own business with the support and development from the UK’s largest and most successful slimming organisation with 6000 groups held weekly in the UK by over 2500 fully trained Consultants reaching half a million members a week. After losing weight with Slimming World you can also be given the opportunity of a whole new career. Our consultants come from all different backgrounds and with totally different circumstances but the flexibility and ability to organise your own work schedule means the rewarding role of a Slimming world Consultant is open to everyone. It’s estimated that 24% of the UK workforce now works part time, while 82% of part-time workers are women. With lots of businesses suffering at the hands of the recession Slimming World is one of the few companies continuing to grow in the current economic climate and successful Slimming World franchises can generate earnings of up to £25K for around 20 hours a week and it gets even better Slimming World is among the Sunday Times’ Top 100 Small Companies to Work For, and is one of only 42 companies in the UK to achieve its prestigious 3 star rating. Due to the ever increasing obesity levels, especially teens and men, Slimming World are looking to increase the number of local groups to enable them to reach out and help as many people as possible. Figures show the region Yorkshire has the highest proportion of overweight people of any region in England – 71 per cent of men were overweight or obese in 2007, compared with fewer than 60 per cent in London. Among women, 62 per cent were overweight or obese in Yorkshire, falling to 54 per cent in London and the South East. Obesity is linked to a reduction in life expectancy of between 7-9 years. So when an overweight person loses weight with Slimming World they really could add years to their life! Five members from South Yorkshire decided they wanted to live longer and were ready to make that lifestyle change and they all joined slimming world and got more than they bargained for as each of them have found a new career from it!!!!!!!! Lindsay Gillott previously worked for a fast food burger chain, Alison Gibson formerly a market trader, Donna Gray a new mum wanting to get back into employment, Sally Grehan looking for employment since taking redundancy and Craig Adams wanting a job to work around his kids. Have all been given the fantastic opportunity of becoming Slimming World consultants, they have lost weight by following Slimming World’s Food Optimising plans where no food is banned and because of their success and desire to help others they took the step to becoming Slimming World Consultants and some have gone on to become managers too. If you too would like more information on this fabulous opportunity, then please contact Jo on 07717 558401. Slimming World have vacancies in the South Yorkshire District for consultants and managers. Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally TV ad helps Sheffielders The Prostate Cancer recognise stroke Charity’s Testing symptoms Choices Campaign - We need your help! The Department of Health’s Act FAST television campaign to raise awareness of the signs of stroke is being re-run this month (March 2011). NHS Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have joined together to back the campaign and urge people to learn how to recognise the signs. Remember FAST - ask yourself these questions: Face - has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile? Arms - can they raise both arms and keep them there? Speech - is their speech slurred? Time - time to call 999 if you see any single one of these signs. Stroke causes irreversible damage to the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery or a blood vessel ruptures or bleeds. The faster you recognise stroke and react to it, the more of the brain you can save. People who get to hospital within three hours of an attack can receive treatment that can reduce their chance of suffering further brain damage or dying. For more information visit: www.nhs.uk/actfast where you can find a video of the adverts and also an interactive test.

Alexis Wieroniey, Policy and Campaigns Officer, The Prostate Cancer Charity

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Every year 37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 10,000 men die from the disease. Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50 and the risk increases with age. You are two and a half times more likely to develop prostate cancer if your father or brother has had it. African Caribbean men are three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men of the same age. The Prostate Cancer Charity is launching a new campaign on 30th March, called the Testing Choices campaign, which calls on politicians to do more to improve men’s understanding and awareness of prostate cancer testing. The PSA test is a blood test that can diagnose prostate problems that might be prostate cancer but only one third of men know it even exists. There are pros and cons to the PSA test, but until men know about the test, they won’t be able to decide whether or not it’s right for them. You help support the campaign by visiting www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/dayofaction to email your MP to ask them to support the campaign. A BIG THANK YOU FROM STEPH KING!

ACOUSTIC ANGELS AT CROOKES

The Acoustic Angels will be appearing at Crookes Social this Friday 25th. Featuring John Reilly, this band have become legends and may well lay claim to being the best band to come out of Sheffield in the last 10 years. Many will have heard of them and they have a great following however this is the first time they have appeared at Crookes Social and I can recommend that everyone goes along and sees them as the music they play simply cannot be bettered. Rarely do you find a combination that features a vocalist of peerless quality supported by the very finest musicians. Amongst them are Cary Bayliss on guitar who has played with great bands such as Jimmy James and the Vagabonds and written hit songs for Take That. Darren Ford, drums, Steve Beighton sax, of Paul Carrack band fame, are regulars with John as members of Boy on a Dolphin and they are regularly joined by Julian Jones, electric violin. Whatever you had planned for this Friday try and get up to Crookes. You’ll be glad you did.

PRESENTING ANIMAL MAGIC MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

You just can’t beat that elated feeling you get when you’re given something free and it’s obviously even better if it’s something that’s going to give you some benefit as well. Just last week it was reported that residents in part of Doncaster were being treated to a free bunch of bananas each, since they happen to live on the appropriately named “Acacia Road” in Cantley. That was the name of the fictional road where cartoon super hero Bananaman lived, or at least his alter ego Eric Wimp. Supermarket Sainsbury’s decided to send out their own Bananaman to hand out quantities of fair free trade bananas to people living on the road. This being the case, we asked about the best things you’d ever received for free. Charlie of Handsworth used to tour with Pink Floyd so has seen a fair few many t-shirts, baseball caps and logoed up jackets come his way on his travels. Mary from Chapeltown on the other hand remembers being given a consumption meter to show her how much electricity each little thing was costing, although in these times of rising bills it wasn’t too nice a thing to look at. A fair few many people pointed out the tokens schemes that run with the weekend papers and supplements with free CDs and even DVDs of your favourite films and TV shows, but my favourite was from John of Auckley who recalled pestering his Mum for an audio cassette of rock classics. The only thing was that you needed to collect the wrappers from ginger biscuits so it wasn’t until he’d munched through 40 or so packets later that John finally got his tape some months later! See you back on Breakfast tomorrow, and join me this week for a chance to catch Lenny Henry in Sheffield FREE! Trevor

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jacques

Mark Twain once said “the best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.” Radio Nightingale provides a special service to cheer up the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. So why not cheer yourself up by joining the Radio Nightingale team. Volunteering isn’t just good for the soul. It can also put you on track to improve your career. Whether you’re currently studying, in work or out of work volunteering is a great way o develop new skills, build your confidence and show future employers that you’ve got drive and initiative. Over 70% of employers say that they would hire a candidate with volunteering experience over someone who has never volunteered. Volunteering offers the chance to have amazing experiences, make friends with people from all walks of life, and who knows, perhaps even find love! And it has been medically proven that ‘doing good’ can give you a heightened sense of well being and a stronger immune system. Remember though that if you want to use volunteering to develop your career, treat it as work, not a hobby. Only a small part of Radio Nightingale’s work is about presenting programmes, keeping the station running takes a lot of work and volunteers are needed to help with a range of jobs. This includes ward visiting and request collecting, fundraising activities and administrative duties, as well as operating the studio equipment and presenting programmes. You don’t need any expert knowledge or technical expertise to be successful at Radio Nightingale, most important is a willingness to learn and be part of a team and be able to make a regular commitment. Alternatively we have some more casual, as and when, opportunities available. If you would like to find out more or if you’re ready to cheer yourself up and get involved in Radio Nightingale contact us on 01709 304244 or admin@ radionightingale.org.uk Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk Current volunteer vacancies: • Website designer • Saturday sports show presenter • Football commentator • Request collector (Tuesday or Wednesday morning) • Fundraiser • Voice over artist / creator Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering.

LEEDS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Well well well…hot off the press, the Leeds and Reading line-up has just been released and by gum they’ve come up trumps this year! With acts covering a whole spectrum of music tastes, the festival, held on August Bank holiday weekend at Bramham Park, Leeds, promises to harbour the best line-up to date. With not three but FOUR headliners, the main stage on Friday 26th August will see The View, Friendly Fires, Elbow and, voted the best live band in the world…Muse headline! Being their only European Show of 2011, Muse are currently working on an amazing set list which will include all the massive tunes from their incredible back-catalogue, so expect something huge from one of the UK’s most celebrated rock acts. Friday will also see 2manydjs, album producers for some of the UK’s pop royalty, aswell as hugely anticipated Death From Above 1979, Panic! At The Disco and The Streets, all to grace the NME Radio 1 stage. And as for the Festival Republic Stage…the one and only Pete Doherty! Saturday 27th, yet other blinder of a line-up will see My Chemical Romance headline, with Thirty Seconds to Mars as headline support. American Punk Rockers, The Offspring are also to take to the infamous stage, as Leeds and Reading is the bands only UK festival appearance of 2011…you better not miss it! Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon also have a main stage spot, along with New Found Glory and The Blackout. The NME Radio 1 stage will be showcasing no other than Beady Eye, Liam Gallagher’s highly anticipated new project, along with West London trio White Lies and The Vaccines, who are incidentally supporting the Arctic Monkeys at their hometown gig in Sheffield on 10th June. And to top it all off…The Festival Republic Stage is to be headlined by no other than The Horrors! Could it get any better? You haven’t seen Sunday’s line-up yet! With not one but two headliners on Sunday 28th, Sheffield’s very own Pulp are quite simply one of the most popular and successful British groups of our time. Not only are they winners of the sought-after Mercury Music Prize, they also have a repertoire of top-notch tunes; ‘Common People,’ ‘Disco 2000’ and ‘Do You Remember The First Time’ which they will no doubt be delivering to the masses. Sharing the headline spot along with Pulp will be The Strokes, a revolutionary indie band form the USA. With their album ‘Is This It’ being voted the album of the decade in NME, along with a reputation as first-class live performers, the five-piece’s set is one of huge anticipation. Joining the main stage line-up includes eighties legends Madness along with Two Door Cinema Club, Seasick Steve and The Pigeon Detectives. The NME Radio 1 stage is set to showcase James Addiction, the notorious Crystal Castles, along with Bombay Bicycle Club and Everything Everything. If this wasn’t enough, The Midnight Beast will also be headlining the Festival Republic Stage…life is sweet! Many many more acts will be announced on all days across the seven stages so keep your eyes peeled! Tickets are now on sale from festivalrepublic.com / seetickets.com or 08700603775. Get yours before it’s too late!

LIVE REVIEW by KT Evans The Big White Tent Fargate - 19/03/11

It’s always around this time of year; a ‘big white tent’ gets erected on the top of Fargate, all in the name of good ol’ St. Patrick. This year certainly was no exception, with local bands performing on either the Friday, Saturday or Sunday slots. With copious amounts of Guinness, which lets be honest, only the hardy can stomach, the event boasted to not only be ‘the friendliest gig of the year’ but also one definitely not to be missed. In that case therefore, Mercury decided to up-sticks and get themselves down on the Saturday night, to see what all the fuss was about. Although it can sometimes be quite a challenge to pull in a decent sized audience to local band nights, Saturday no doubt challenged this rule. With hundreds of people flocking in and out of the tents throughout the night, the live bands kicked off from about half seven with The Northern Generals, an indie-infused blues band from Sheffield, (who really should win some sort of award for their ingenious name). A major highlight of the night came in the form of The Ratells, a fresh-faced, guitar driven indie band who, not only put on a cracking show but also have some ridiculously catchy tunes (not to mention a glamorously dedicated fan base). With a forty five minute set, they perfectly demonstrated their top-notch Sheffield credentials and deserve some serious recognition. Following on from these, Cut Your Wings, a relatively recent formation who brought their low-fi, heavy rock edge to the stage. Consisting of amps that pretty much blew your head off, the four-piece have moved away from the traditional indie-sound of Sheffield to deliver a much more raw and gritty performance. Although not totally convincing every member of the audience (hey, you win some, you lose some), Cut Your Wings did display their ‘powerful’ nature with head-banging riffs and anthem-esque choruses. Whether or not they be your taste, Cut Your Wings sure as hell didn’t fail to deliver big. Headlining the night; Sheffield’s Alvarez Kings who, like every performance they do, were pretty much spot on. Gracing the stage at around eleven ish, the four-piece evidently know how to put on a top notch show; being voted the ‘Best Band in Sheffield’ really does speak for itself. Performing tracks ‘The Sequel’ along with crowd favourite ‘You Me Them Us’ amongst others, Alvarez Kings are masters of their craft and have therefore gained a very respectable following. With charm and charisma, the band where perfectly suited to conclude the Saturday leg of the 2011’s Big White Tent.

RELEASES

artist: The Strokes album: Angles Released: Out Now

There are a lot of difficulties when a band returns after a 5 year spell apart from the bread and butter of recording an album. There is the doubt in the minds of the fans, the press and the band members themselves. Have they still got it? After the opening track of Angles, The Strokes’ counter-attack to any niggling doubt of ability is at full power. Machu Picchu, like any classic Strokes song builds up slowly to a sound that is like no other. I found it hard to get around to reviewing this album, simply because I kept listening to the

ʻTHE VOICEʼ ARRIVES AT THE HALL Known all over the world for his first-class operatic tenor vocals, Sheffield City Hall is very lucky to have Russell Watson grace its stage on Wednesday 30th ‘March. Bringing his 21 date ‘La Voce’ spring tour to the British masses, expect songs performed from all seven of Watson’s critically acclaimed previous albums. With a mantel-piece that is quite possibly short of space, Watson has won a whole host of awards including ‘album of the year’ at the Classical BRIT awards in 2001 aswell as best-selling and debut album for ‘The Voice,’ which Watson is now fondly known as. Reaching number five in the UK Album Charts, aswell as number one in the US, the Lancashire born lad made history by topping both the UK and US Classical charts in the early noughties. The album sees Watson not only perform beautiful tenor compositions, but also a variety of, somewhat uncharacteristic covers; Happy Monday’s Shaun Ryder’s vocal can be heard on track ‘Barcelona,’ something which emphasises Watson’s diverse and unique singing ability. Subsequent albums followed, including ‘That’s Life’ released in March 2007. Tragically, this was released just after Watson was under-going treatment for a life-threatening pituitary tumour, which reappeared the following year. However, Watson successfully pulled through and has thus, deservedly so, received tremendous support from loyal fans. He now speaks openly about his illness, something which hasn’t stopped Watson doing what he evidently loves to do; perform. Not only a world-class chart topper, Russell is also making a name for himself within the world of the media, by appearing on and presenting various shows. Late 2008 saw Watson take up the role as guest judge on BBC One’s ‘Last Choir Standing’ which was preceded by numerous T.V appearances to promote his sixth studio album ‘People Get Ready.’ Not only this, Watson also sung at the opening ceremony of the World Games in Taiwan, 2009 which saw him perform to millions of people world-wide. So it’s pretty fair to say Russell Watson is fairly well practised! Don’t miss out on a one in a lifetime opportunity to see ‘The Voice’ perform live next Wednesday. Tickets are still available for purchase either at Sheffield’s City Hall box office 0114 2789789 or alternatively on the venues website (www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events). Ticket prices start from around £25.53 with hospitality tickets at £100 still up for grabs. See the website for more details.

first song. The second track, Under Cover of Darkness, was available to listen on The Strokes’ website prior to release and was met with an avalanche of hits. A few weeks later, the entire album was posted on their website available to all. Maybe the doubt was weak; this is the action of a band that are confident in their product. Angles is the most varied of all The Strokes’ previous albums. Taken For A Fool and Gratisfaction could fit comfortably on any album and are catchier than foot and mouth. The record finishes with somewhat of a question mark. Life is Simple in the Moonlight is an intriguing number penned by front man Julian Casablancas and acts as a cliff hanger as to what direction the band might point towards for their next outing. The Strokes are back and the world feels right again. Score: 9/10 Review by Bunsen Bob

NEWBURY & LINFIELD HORSE RACING by Timelord

After the dizzy heights of Festival racing we are back to more normal fare this weekend. That isn’t to say that the racing is poor however. Newbury hosts the EBF/TBA Mares’ Novices’ Finals (Chase and Hurdle), which are always interesting races and often throw up good horses to follow in later years, while Lingfield has the AW Winter Derby and Spring Cup – two very competitive races. There are six races on C4 TV (the Scoop 6) which I will concentrate on here. There are other UK meetings at Bangor, Kempton and Stratford while over in the United Arab Emirates there is excellent Group racing from Meydan on both turf and Tapeta (all weather) and to conclude there is a meeting from Navan in Ireland which contains a Grade 2 chase. All in all this amounts to quite a feast of racing. Lingfield: To kick off the TV coverage David Barrons’ Hitchens looks to hold a decent chance of landing the Listed Sportingbet Supports Heros Hever Sprint Stakes at 2.00. This looks a pretty competitive event however and there are many with live chances. Rowe Park heads the list of dangers, closely followed by Fratellino, Five Star Junior, Feelin Foxy and Waveband. The Listed Sportingbet Supports Heros Spring Cup follows at 2.35 where I reckon that the unbeaten Vanguard Dream can continue his run. Of the others Dubawi Gold will be dangerous if transferring his turf form to the AW track. Best of those with AW form look to be Oceanway, Conducting and Shostakovich but the selection ought to take a lot of stopping here. Finally from Lingfield the Winter Derby can go to Clive Brittain’s Nideeb who ran an excellent race when finishing a short head second to Cheetah last time out in November. Admittedly that was quite while ago but I see no reason why he can’t go well fresh and think that he holds a solid chance here. To my mind he did nothing but improve throughout last year and I am hoping he can go on again from there this year. In what could turn out to be another tricky contest Dansili Dancer, Pachattack, Mister Green, and Layline might prove troublesome to the selection - a remark that could equally well apply to Big Creek if he could transfer the best of his turf form to the all weather track. Newbury: The Mares’ Novices’ Chase Final starts the TV coverage from Newbury at 2.15. Molly Round sets something of a poser here as she is declared in both the Chase and Hurdle finals. If she were to line up for the Chase then she would have to merit a joint selection having run really well last time (but over hurdles). However I am hoping that Molly Round will go for the Hurdle Final so the one I like best of the rest is Colin Tizzard’s Douryna who did a very good time last time out. There are five last time out winners in the declarations at present and all look to hold respectable chances. Kerada has run well for Nicky Henderson this year and commands plenty of respect, a remark that also applies to Alan King’s Asturienne, Tom George’s Betty Browneyes and Neil King’s Evella. Magical Legend holds my top speed rating but somehow often finds one too good for her. Cool Friend, Sawpit Supreme, Sway and Smuglin are others running well at present in what looks to be a fascinating contest. As indicated above I like Molly Round for the

STEELERS CLINCH LEAGUE TITLE ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle

An elated Arena of nearly 7000 fans watched the Sheffield Steelers win their seventh league title on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over the Braehead Clan. Less than 24hrs earlier the two teams faced off in Braehead, and Steelers once again took the points, this time with a 5-1 victory. Coach-loads of fans made the journey from Sheffield up to Scotland, accompanied by many fans who travelled in their own cars. Both teams played a great first period, and it took until the final minute before the Steelers scored the first goal of the evening, Captain Jonathan Phillips firing home a shot at 19:02. In the second period Jeff Legue doubled their lead at 25:52 and, with Kyle Bruce sitting out a 2 min charging minor and 5 min fighting major Joey Talbot scored a powerplay goal at 35:05. Neil Clark added another powerplay goal at 38:14 and Ashley Tait found the back of the net at 19:54 with the Steelers’ final goal of the evening. Braehead began a come-back in the third period at 51:15 with a powerplay goal as Kevin Bolibruck sat out 2 mins for hooking, but that was as far as they got and the Steelers took a 5-1 victory. Sunday night was the Sheffield Steelers’ Teddy Bear Toss

Hurdle Final at 2.50. If absent however Rith Bob looks to hold a sound chance along with Tout Regulier and Definitely Lovely. Marginal preference among these would be for Rith Bob, but only if Molly Round is absent. In the handicap chase at 3.25 there are several that are running well at present and who did good speed ratings last time out. Top amongst these is Ogee who has a sporting chance and is the selection. Second best to my mind is Tim Vaughan’s Winterwood followed by Maktu, Noble Crusader and Incentivise (in that order), and old boy Briery Fox isn’t totally out of it despite his advancing years. Selections: I have provided the usual shortlist for each of the 6 televised races. As always, because of multiple entries remember to check for non runners and race times. The list is in order of preference reading from left to right. Lingfield: 2.00 Hitchens, Rowe Park, Fratellino, Five Star Junior, Feelin Foxy, Waveband, Anne of Kiev 2.35 Vanguard Dream, Dubawi Gold, Oceanway, Conducting, Shostakovich 3.10 Nideeb, Dansili Dancer, Pachattack, Mister Green, Layline, Big Creek. Newbury: 2.15 Douryna and Molly Round (if present), Kerada, Evella, Sawpit Supreme, Sway, Asturienne, Cool Friend 2.50 Molly Round, Rith Bob, Tout Regulier, Definitely Lovely, Aneyeforaneye, High Benefit, Alverstone, Empress Orchid 3.25 Ogee, Winterwood, Maktu, Noble Crusader, Incentivise, Briery Fox. Navan: In the Grade 2 Webster Cup Chase at 4.25 I think that Dessie Hughes’ Erritt Lake could run well at a decent price. His form figures aren’t all that inspiring but his last race was run in a fast time for the going and the form could hold up here. Trafford Lad, I Hear A Symphony and Made In Taipan might give him most to think about. Selections summary: Lingfield: 2.00 Hitchens; 2.35 Vanguard Dream; 3.10 Nideeb Newbury: 2.15 Douryna & Molly Round (if running); 2.50 Molly Round (if absent, Rith Bob); 3.25 Ogee Navan: 4.25 Erritt Lake Last week’s results: The outcome for the Festival meeting was something of a mixed bag for my selections. There were a few good priced winners, some unlucky horses (notably Oscars Well) and some that ran poorly. Overall the return to 1 point win stakes was positive, but some of the savers didn’t show. If you backed each way then you should have had some other reasonable place returns, depending upon how many places your bookie paid. One or two horses ran quite well but finished just out if the frame at decent prices (Recession Proof @ 12/1 and Golden Silver @ 11/1 being notable examples).selections with one winner at 28/1 giving a return of + 24 points to 1 point win stakes. Overall on the week therefore the column had a quite reasonable 32 point profit to 1 point level stakes. and Auction, and when Rod Sarich scored the Steelers’ first goal at 6:47 soft toys rained onto the ice from all sides as Steelers and junior players worked side by side to clear them from the ice. Jeff Legue doubled the home side’s lead at 13:52 and the scores remained 2-0 for the rest of the 1st period. Jeramie Domish continued the Steelers’ goal streak at 22:52, and Neil Clark and Rod Sarich added goals of their own, Sarich’s a short-handed goal at 26:12. Steve Munn scored at 27:48 on the powerplay to close the scoring for the second period, his 5th goal for the Steelers this season. In the third period, like the previous night, Braehead tried for a comeback in the third period, Adam Walker scoring a goal in the second minute, and their travelling support were given a bit more hope at 15:53 as Jordan Krestanovich took advantage of a powerplay and scored the Clan’s second goal. It was Steve Munn again who came through with the Steelers’ seventh goal at 56:46. At the encouragement of Rink Announcer David Simms, a banner was unfurled from one of the VIP Suites proclaiming the Steelers to be the Elite League Champions, and as the final hooter sounded the Steelers bench erupted as cameras and champagne flooded the ice. Off the ice, the Teddy Bear Auction, at which bears made by the players, kindly donated by Build-a-Bear Meadowhall and dressed in their own miniature jerseys by Rhino Sports are auctioned off, raised £725 which will be split between Amy’s House Respite Nursery and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

TRENTSIDE FISHERIES

by Clint Walker

Last week I considered what I would call ‘villains’; in the spirit of fairness and equality, this week I’d like to talk about ‘heroes’. ‘Heroes’ is a broad term, with many connotations, but I don’t mean true heroes such as our Armed Forces, brain surgeons and those who do put themselves on the line for others, I probably mean ‘celebrities’. Again, this is not a term I’d really apply to angling, but I do have a respect for many anglers who pass on their knowledge, guidance and expertise to ensure their fellows to help them enjoy their fishing; I’ve met a few since I’ve been writing this column......... Kev Green; editor of one of the UK’s most popular magazines Improve Your Coarse Fishing, and host of numerous television programmes, who first introduced me to the world of angling media when I met him at the Go-Fishing Show at the NEC in 2009. Kev persuaded me to audition for the Korum backed Search for a Star competition to find a new feature writer for the magazine; out of the hundreds who applied, I got into the last four before losing out to Julian Chidgley who continues to produce quality work which many anglers read. Since then, I’ve been able to contact Kev for advice, and he is never too busy; top fella! Julian Grattidge; first published me in the angling arena on his NorthWestCarp website. Julian has been a constant fountain of information, advice and friendship with regards to the minefield of getting published as ‘hard copy’ and also improving my own carp angling. Cyril Brewster; not an angler as such, but boss of the mighty Cudmore Fishery in Staffordshire. I admire what he does because of his personal drive and ambition to make angling accessible for all as well as running one of the most successful day ticket fisheries/angling schools in the country. He has also helped me out with contacts and again, is a wealth of knowledge. Currently pushing for new media event, National School template and National Angling Centre, if Cyril can’t make it work, then no-one can!

Bob’s record speaks for itself, and on every occasion I’ve been lucky enough to meet him, he has taken time to find out what I’m doing, not tell me what I should be doing! A mark of the man is the inevitable queue of anglers wanting a piece of him! Bob is a fine ambassador for our sport and thoroughly nice chap. Jan Porter; another well known angler who is ready to speak with anyone. I’ve only met Jan a couple of times, but he is always ready to spend a few minutes trying to help, whether it’s with angling advice or tips to get exposure for a product; he is possibly the hairiest angler on the bank, and wears a dodgy hat, but is a joy to talk to. I’m writing this thinking that there are loads more I should mention, so maybe more next week?? Tight lines, Clint

LEADERS QPR TAKE ALL THE POINTS AWAY FROM THE KEEPMOAT MATCH REPORT www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

A fine, sunny but cool afternoon welcomed the Championship leaders, Queens Park Rangers to the Keepmoat Stadium. The Rovers made one change to their line-up, John Oster in for Mrk Wilson. The visitors got the game underway and for the first ten minutes put the Rovers under severe pressure. None more so than in the fourth minute when, following a corner, Helguson hit the bar with a header. From the rebound two further crosses were defended desperately and successfully. The Rovers eventually got going and in the 15th minute Gillett combined with Oster on the right but Gillett’s cross from the right byline was caught by Kenny. The Rovers came again immediately with Coppinger, on the right, hitting a low ball to the near post where Moussa slid in and touched the ball on to the outside of the post and out. The match settled down after this. Smith, for the Rangers in the 20th minute, brought a fingertip save from Woods when he tried to convert a ball from the left. The corner ball developed into a game of head tennis before Faurlin fired high over the bar. Midfield play followed as the Rovers tried to stem the blue and whites going forward. On the half hour Ephraim for the visitors put wide and two minutes later Stock hit a rocket from the angle of the penalty area on the right that took a deflection into the side netting. Following the resultant corner Stock put wide from the edge of the area. Giving as good as they got for the remainder of the half the Rovers had a near miss on 42 minutes when, from a corner on their left Moussa met it with a fierce header that Kenny tipped over the bar for another corner. Half time came with the scoreline still goalless. The Rovers started the second half brightly, with Moussa winning a tussle for the ball on the halfway line and going on to get in a strike at goal that was blocked by a defender. However, in the 48th minute they were caught with a sucker punch when EPHRAIM, on the visitors left, turned inside hird and hit a low ball from 25yards into the far bottom corner of the net. This gave the Rangers the incentive to put the pressure on the home team for the next ten minutes. A cross from the left to Helguson on the right was headed wide and a corner to the visitors was

STOCK: WE SHOWED HEART ROVERS NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

Doncaster Rovers skipper Brian Stock believes that should Rovers put in more performances like the one against QPR at the Keepmoat on Saturday, then the side can push on up the league table. Rovers may have lost 1-0 against top-of-the-table Queens Park Rangers, but the performance from the side showed great determination and, as Rovers assistant manager Richard O’Kelly commented post-match, spirit. “I thought we showed a lot of heart today,” said Welsh international Stock. “We showed that against a very strong QPR side who are up there on merit and have a great squad. We rode our luck for the first ten minutes, but for the rest of the game - we huffed and puffed - but

well defended. In the 58th minute the Rovers got back into the game when Coppinger got in a cross from the right beyond the far post where Moussa headed wide. Two minutes later and a good build-up by the Rovers on their right brought them a corner, which was cleared but back they came, down the left but the cross from Mills was caught by Kenny. Past the hour and the substitutions began. This seemed to disrupt the game which became a bit scrappy. Mason’s first kick came following a free kick but he put he fired high and wide and followed this up minutes later with a good run forward before firing wide from 20yards. The Rovers began to have more of the play as the visitors sat back a bit confident in their ability to hold on to their lead. They successfully defended that lead despite a late effort from the Rovers in added time when Moussa, with some good footwork forced a corner that came to nothing and in the dying seconds, a quick free kick on the Rovers left by Moussa gave Coppinger the chance of a cross that Euell, stretching, headed wide. The referee’s whistle went, with Queens Park Rangers taking the points and extending their lead at the top of the table Teams - Doncaster Rovers Gary Woods; Sam Hird, Shelton Martis, George Friend, Joseph Mills; James Coppinger, Brian Stock, Simon Gillett, John Oster, Franck Moussa; James Hayter Subs used - Ryan Mason for Oster 68 mins; Jason Euell for Hayter 74 mins; Mustapha Dumbuya for Gillett 84 mins; Subs not used - Mark Wilson, Dean Shiels, Matt Kilgallon, Neil Sullivan gk Queens Park Rangers - Paddy Kenny; Bradley Orr, Kaspars Gorkss, Fitz Hall, Clint Hill; Wayne Routledge, Shaun Derry, Alejandro Faurlin, Hogan Ephraim, Tommy Smith, Heidar Helguson Subs used - Akos Buzsaky for Ephraim 63 mins; Rob Hulse for Helguson 80 mins; Subs not used - Pascal Chimbonda, Danny Shittu, Patrick Agyamang, Peter Moen, Radek Cerny gk Cautions - Gorkss 67 mins; when you look at the amount of goals that they have conceded and the defenders that they have got, you can see why they are top of the league when they can hold on to a 1-0 lead.” “The timing of the goal was crucial,” admits Stock. “To limit QPR to one or two chances in the game is what we set out to do. We’re disappointed, but we need to pick ourselves up. There is only a short way to go now until the end of the season and if we keep putting performances in like that, we’ll do alright.”

OʼKELLY: WE SHOWED SPIRIT GAFFERS REACTION www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

Doncaster Rovers may have been on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat at the hands of league-leaders Queens Park Rangers at the Keepmoat, however Rovers assistant manager Richard O’Kelly remained pleased with his side’s character throughout the encounter on Saturday. “Against the league leaders who are ten points clear, I thought we matched them after the first ten minutes,” Richard told RoversPlayer. “In this division, I suppose one mistake has cost us the game.” One player who continues to impress for Rovers is loanee Franck Moussa. The Leicester City man has shown great ability with the ball and linked up well with fellow front-men James Coppinger and James Hayter. “Franck Moussa looked lively and our front three kept causing QPR problems after the opening ten minutes,” the Rovers number two continued. “Franck got some decent balls in and around him and we started to get better support. We’ve been pleased with him and despite being 5’9’’, he can certainly jump up and compete for the ball in the air as he showed today. We played him slightly deeper behind James Hayter and James Coppinger and I thought he excelled in the position today.” Despite the narrow score-line, O’Kelly emphasised the strength possessed by opponents QPR but admits that he was pleased with the way that the Rovers responded to the goal. “In this division, any goal is crucial and the first goal was probably more crucial today when you are playing Queens Park Rangers at home. They are a very well organised side with lots of experience, and they remind me of Newcastle United from last season. When they get ahead, it’s very difficult to get any momentum in the game. They break play up, have players who understand how to kill the game and they know what they are doing.” “Despite that, we kept going and we showed a lot of character and spirit.”

MILLERS SUFFER HEAVY TV LOSS MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk

Rotherham United were comfortably beaten in front of the Sky cameras by league leading Chesterfield. Goals from Dean Holden and Craig Davies added to a hat-trick by Jack Lester to give the home side the resounding victory. Ronnie Moore made just one change to the side that drew with Bury last week; fit again Danny Coid replaced Dale Tonge in defence. The visiting Millers supporters contributed significantly to the electric atmosphere in the b2net stadium, but it was the home side who had the better of the opening exchanges on the pitch. Dean Morgan forced Andy Warrington into a fine save with a free-kick from the edge of the area, before Lester and Deane Smalley headed over in the opening five minutes. The Millers first chance came on 19 minutes from an excellent counter-attack. After Warrington had fumbled a Smalley corner-kick, he recovered excellently to clear the ball off the line to Nicky Law, who raced the entire length of the field and eventually set up Marcus Marshall, whose left-footed volley was acrobatically kept out by Tommy Lee. The frantic opening soon generated a goal, which came from a former Millers loanee. Holden arrived unmarked in the area to head home from Davies’ left-wing cross. On the half-hour mark the Spireites doubled the lead when Davies was able to head home from a corner on the right. The delivery was flicked on at the near post and with a host of bodies free at the far post, the striker netted his 22nd of the season. Five minutes later and Lester could have made it three. The veteran striker danced through the Millers defence only to be denied by Warrington, and when he reacted to the rebound quickest, it took an excellent last ditch tackle by Johnny Mullins to prevent the goal. As half-time approached, Jason Taylor rounded off a good Millers move by forcing a save from Lee, but the lethal blow was dealt at the other end. It was third time lucky for Lester who broke straight between the Millers defence in stoppage time before placing a left-footed shot beyond Warrington. The Millers did start the second-half better with Ryan Taylor going close on 56 minutes. A fine run by Law ended when he appeared to be fouled, but the referee played-on allowing Coid to cross low for Taylor, who brought the ball under control before side-footing his effort over Lee’s crossbar. The second-half proved nowhere near as frantic as the first, with chances much more sparse. Omar Daley was introduced to add a spark to the Millers attack, but it was Chesterfield’s makeshift right back who created the next chance with a dazzling run down the wing culminating in a cross that Lester was just inches from meeting. Ryan Taylor went close on 75 minutes, heading Law’s corner towards the bottom corner, before Lee saved with an outstretched hand; the Spireites countered and it took a fine interception by Coid to prevent a fourth goal. Shortly after Davies could have doubled his tally when he was allowed

GOLF TOURS

time in the area, but curled his shot wide of Warrington’s goal. He tried his luck again from further out but Warrington was equal to that one whilst at the other end substitute Daley broke, and saw his rocket of a shot tipped onto the bar by Lee. Moore used his final substitution by sending on Henderson in place of Marshall, but within seconds Chesterfield added a fourth. Lester outmuscled Cresswell before bursting into the area and side footing past Warrington. Things went from bad to catastrophic for the Millers with the next piece of play, as Lester completed his hat-trick with a free header that he despatched past Warrington from Danny Whitaker’s corner. With four minutes remaining the home side came within inches of a sixth when Warrington tipped a long-range shot onto the post. It was followed up, but the fourth official had already flagged for offside. As the fourth official’s board was raised the Millers were denied a consolation as Adam Le Fondre’s first time lob was tipped onto the bar by the backtracking Lee. Chesterfield: Lee, Talbot, Holden, Robertson, Griffiths, Smalley, Allott (Mattis 85), Whitaker, Morgan, Lester (Djilali 85). Not used: Redmond, Bowery (Davies 81), Boden, Niven, Morris. Rotherham: Warrington, Coid, Mullins, Cresswell, Kennedy (Tonge HT), Marshall (Henderson 81), Law, J.Taylor, Thomas-Moore (Daley 62), R.Taylor, Le Fondre Not used: Annerson, Fenton, Harrison, Bradley. MAGNIFICENT BLADES TAKE THE POINTS MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades were magnificent in dominating this Yorkshire derby with Leeds. None of the contingent that travelled down the M1 could dispute that the Blades were far superior in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off. An own goal from Eric Lichaj and a strike from substitute Bjorn Helge Riise - his first for the club - secured the sweet victory. Leeds-born Nick Montgomery was inspirational in the success whilst Matthew Lowton, Shane Lowry, Sam Vokes, Michael Doyle, Richard Cresswell and Micky Adams - all ex-Leeds players - would have particularly enjoyed the day. Adams made three enforced changes for the derby encounter. Henderson and Williamson were suspended, whilst Collins was ruled out by injury. The replacements were Lowton, Evans and Bogdanovic. On the bench, Estonian goalkeeper Aksalu returned after injury and 18-year-old youth team central defender, Maguire, was included after impressing in the FA Youth Cup in midweek. The formation appeared to be

4-3-3 with Lowton taking the place of Collins in the heart of the defence. Doyle, Quinn and Montgomery were the midfield three and Evans and Bogdanovic joined Vokes in attack. The Blades took less than a minute to create a noteworthy chance. It came from a long Nosworthy throw but Quinn was impeded as he attempted to shoot, resulting in a comfortable save from Schmeichel. Headers from Becchio and Vokes were also wide with the action frantic in the opening stages. On 12 minutes Lowton connected with a Quinn corner but his effort was too close to the visiting goalkeeper and United felt aggrieved when referee Jones punished O’Brien for a foul on Quinn when an advantage call could have put Evans in the clear. The defender was subsequently booked. Despite the Blades being on top, one of the best chances of the first 20 minutes fell to the visitors. From Lichaj’s diagonal cross, 5ft 6in Gradel was left unmarked at the back post but he headed wide. The Blades won a number of corners and Vokes headed wide from a Montgomery cross before the best chance of the half arrived on 35 minutes. From another Montgomery delivery, Evans purposely flicked on to the unmarked Bogdanovic, but his shot was blocked by the onrushing Schmeichel, making himself a big target - reminiscent of his father in

his prime. Snodgrass shot wide soon after but the Blades were quickly back on the offensive. Vokes and Bogdanovic were both involved before Quinn’s low half-volley, which looked to be creeping into the corner of the net, was pushed away by Schmeichel at full stretch. The visitors needed their goalkeeper once again on 43 minutes as their goal was being bombarded. This time Evans found space and his left-footer from 25 yards was acrobatically pushed away by Schmeichel. The last chance of the half fell to Leeds but Nosworthy blocked from Snodgrass and the Blades fans were appreciative of their team’s efforts when they jogged off at the break. Vokes and Bannon were wide with efforts from outside the box early in the second half and Johnson headed over a Snodgrass free-kick before the Blades were rewarded for the first half efforts. With 55 minutes gone, Montgomery was involved in the build up on the right and after a Quinn cross, the Blades skipper helped the ball on and right-back LICHAJ turned the ball into his own net in front of United’s Kop. Evans was cautioned soon after for a foul on Schmeichel, although the Leeds goalkeeper seemed to protest in favour of the United striker. Around the hour mark

Quinn fired wide with a first-timer and Bromby made a timely interception to prevent Vokes getting a clear sight of goal. Bannon was close with an effort from outside the box on 63 minutes as Leeds aimed to show more attacking intent, whilst they also made a change in their front line. Quinn was giving a high-energy performance and he was handed the armband when Montgomery limped out of the action, to be replaced by Riise. The change was to be pivotal as United doubled the advantage just two minutes later. It was a pinpoint pass from Quinn that picked out RIISE on the right and his shot may have taken the slightest deflection en route to the back of the net, to the delight of the Unitedites. Leeds made another change and as the game entered the final ten minutes and the visitors again went close. From a free-kick, Simonsen failed to collect the ball but Gradel was crowded out by Lowton and Vokes protecting the goal-line. The hardworking Evans was replaced by Cresswell late on and the drama continued. Lowry hit the deck and reacted to an off-theball incident. Referee Jones took his time to make a decision, booking Lowry but sending Paynter for an early bath. Cresswell’s shot on the turn was saved by Schmeichel and five minutes of added time passed without incident, apart from the Blades fans raising the decibel level with a late singsong!

ADAMS WANTS LANE FORTRESS GAFFERS REACTION www.sufc.co.uk

Micky Adams feels Bramall Lane holds the key to United’s chances of climbing to Championship safety, following Saturday’s impressive success over Leeds. The Gaffer says United’s remaining home matches could prove the difference between survival and relegation after consecutive victories on home soil: “We have got four home games left which will obviously be key - we are far from finished just yet.” He adds: “Nobody gave us a chance against Leeds and we have now shown what we are capable of. “The team is in the right frame of mind and when we show that sort of passion and commitment, the fans will get right behind us. “I want to see a confident Sheffield United team like we were against Leeds, there was a real togetherness and team spirit about us which we have to take forward - and let’s not forget, we played some great football as well.”

A GLIMMER OF HOPE FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Jon Warburton

Pride, passion, belief, incisive, attacking and most of all quality. Just a few words that I didn’t think I’d be using to describe a Sheffield United performance this season. At what was a very Beautiful Down Town Bramall Lane last Saturday we completely outplayed our Yorkshire rivals, making a mockery of our league position. In every position we saw players looking as if they would die for the cause. While it would be difficult to pick out individuals I can’t help but draw attention to the input of two Blades. Coming in as a replacement for the questionable (I’m being kind) Neill Collins, young Matt Lowton was impeccable at centre half. While not necessarily the tallest of players to be taking up a centre half place, he commanded his back line imperiously, using his natural pace to sweep up whenever the other three were caught out. And you can’t help but marvel at the performances we are seeing week in week out from Stephen Quinn. He has had is doubters over the years, but it appears that a relegation battle brings out the best in him. He is one player that when he kisses the badge, you really believe that he means it. But without wanting to go too overboard after what was without doubt a very good result, the travesty is that we may just have left it a little too late. A game is played over a 46 game season and so far this term we just haven’t been good enough. Be that as it may we have eight games to save our season and if we continue to show anything like the endeavour we saw on Saturday we will give ourselves a chance. At least now we have hope, because it was starting to get a bit depressing…

SAINTS MARCH ON OVER OWLS MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Quickfire second half strikes from Jose Fonte and Rickie Lambert downed the Owls at Southampton on Saturday. The scoreline was harsh on Wednesday, who had matched the high-flying Saints until the first goal went in. After weathering an early Southampton storm, the Owls hit back and were good value for a point before Saints’ clinical edge in front of goal proved the difference. New recruit Rob Jones showed his mettle inside the first few minutes with a full blooded challenge to deny Lee Barnard a clear sight on goal. Lambert then warmed the hands of Richard O’Donnell with a pacy free kick that the debutant keeper did well to smother. O’Donnell showed no signs of nerves and did all that was asked of him well as the first half unfolded. Southampton bossed things in terms of possession through the

Match Reports, Reactions, News, Fans Column - All Articles copyright of www.swfc.co.uk

early throes but the Owls soaked up the pressure and enjoyed neat pockets of play themselves. Isaiah Osbourne looked particularly menacing going forward, as was evidenced by a fierce long ranger that whistled narrowly past the post on the half-hour mark. Michael Morrison headed wide from Gary Teale’s free kick and the Owls more than held their own as half time approached. Indeed, as the teams went down the tunnel after Jones had nodded another Teale cross just wide, it was Wednesday who looked the more likely to break the deadlock. The second half started in much the same way as the first and this time Southampton really stretched O’Donnell but again the youngster rose to the occasion with a fine diving save from Dean Hammond. But O’Donnell and the Owls were undone on the hour from a Southampton corner. Alex Chamberlain’s feed was accurate and perfect for the onrushing figure of Fonte to power a header into the top corner. Six minutes later, Saints made it two. A swift move upfield saw the ball fall nicely to top scorer Lambert, who drilled an unstoppable shot past

O’Donnell. Adam Lallana then struck a post as Southampton’s advantage began to tell and O’Donnell pulled off another impressive save to keep out an arcing shot from Chamberlain. Although they failed to add to their tally, the hosts closed the game in the driving seat to strengthen their top six slot, while for Wednesday it was another case of what might have been and a long trek home pointless. Southampton: Davis, Butterfield, Jaidi, Fonte, Harding, Chamberlain (Prado 77), Chaplow, Hammond, Lallana (Seaborne 90), Barnard (Forte 86), Lambert Unused substitutes: Bialkowski, Richardson, Martin, N’Guessan Owls: O’Donnell, Morrison, Jones, Batth, Reynolds, Coke, Miller (Potter 74), Osbourne (Johnson 62), Teale (O’Connor 81), Heffernan, Madine Unused substitutes: Cuff, Spurr, Buxton, Mellor

MEGSONʼS ITʼS JUST VERDICT BECOMING BORING GAFFERʼS REACTION www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson cited Southampton’s opening goal as the big turning point at St Mary’s. The live televised clash saw Wednesday and the Saints play out a close-fought match but Jose Fonte’s goal on the hour broke the deadlock and Rickie Lambert sealed the points six minutes later. Megson said: “I thought we were OK for an hour, they didn’t cause us too many problems but we hadn’t caused them too many problems either. “I thought they edged it in terms of possession but at half time we mentioned that when teams are as evenly matched as that, chances are that the breakthrough will come from a set piece and that’s what has cost us. “The game is entirely different once one team takes the lead. “They got momentum from that and we’ve had to change things around and put three up front and that shows you how important it is to score the first goal.” Richard O’Donnell made his debut in goal for the Owls in the evening kick-off and the Wednesday boss was pleased with his contribution. He said: “Richard did well for us in goal and I’m pleased he had that kind of performance for us and for himself. “He made some great saves and kicked well throughout the game. There wasn’t anything he could have done with their goals.” He concluded: “We’re in a battle now to keep Sheffield Wednesday in this division, albeit we have games in hand. We need the players to take responsibility and have the battling mentality that will get us results.”

WANTED

FANS WEEKLY COLUMN by Bunsen Bob It is becoming boring now. I can’t think of a single redeeming feature of the current squad with which to smile about. James O’Connor’s haircut is mildly amusing but it doesn’t really suffice. Speaking of James O’Connor, it wasn’t encouraging to see him finish the game in central midfield alongside Darren Potter. The fact that this pairing, the same pairing that was at the helm for most of last season’s relegation, is still involved after a another disastrous season on the pitch speaks volumes of Irvine’s inability to find anyone better and Megson’s reluctance to take a protracted gamble on anyone else. I didn’t really watch the Southampton game. It was on the TV and I was looking at it but that was it. What I did feel that it didn’t take much for Southampton to beat us. Our 43rd and 44th centre halves of the season did OK but still, a goal from a corner and another that wasn’t particular sought by graft and guile put paid to any hope of getting something out of the game. I took the opportunity to watch a non-league game on Saturday afternoon. The pitch was hard and bobbly, some players carried a few excess pounds but their passion and determination to win was clear to see. I write this for no other reason but to highlight that fact that, for the first time in a long time, I can’t guarantee that all the Wednesday players were giving as much passion as these non-league lads or indeed anywhere near the required 100%. I get a strong feeling that the players want this season to be over. It must be hard for Megson to motivate a squad that he is likely to decimate but he needs to think of something or this season might just get a little bit frightening once again.
