With the help of funding aimed at regenerating the area, CADS now contains two music venues, an art display gallery and many studios for artists. It’s social enterprise working with artists, musicians and creative businesses to build a community of artisan productivity. The Tramlines Ale brewed by the Sheffield Brewery is also we’re very pleased about. The ale is a golden bitter,
ideal for festivals and is already on sale in the pubs listed above and in The Wick At Both Ends. The brewery give a contribution to the festival from every barrel sold which goes directly into funding the Blues and Ale Trail. This ensures that the event is free to the public and can be enjoyed by all. For up to the minute information, regular bulletins and news on the Sheffield Music Scene go to www. tramlines.org.uk

COPLEYʼS COLUMN
What joy to be a Mancunian, with Manchester City winning the F.A Cup and Manchester United proving to be the best team in the country for the nineteenth time. Manchester is very much like Sheffield, both being northern industrial cities, although larger and boast two of the best football teams in the country, so why is it that Sheffield can only muster two teams in the third tier of football? The answer is that in the past, Wednesday have been run by incompetents and United by people of questionable reputation, although not now, I should say. What can we look forward to next season? Wednesday can look forward, thanks to saviour Milan Mandaric, to a bright future with money available for new blood to make a serious challenge for promotion, whilst United are committed to off-loading their big earners and relying on the successful youngsters to do a man’s job. This of course will be nigh on impossible, and I salute their loyal fans who have renewed their season tickets. As Sheffielders, we should hope that both teams are successful for the good of our city, but of course the friendly banter and rivalry will resume the minute the new season kicks off. The funeral has taken place this week of Severiano Ballasteros, a great man, fantastic golfer and great ambassador for the game of golf. It says much of Sevi, that the huge turnout of many of his professionals turned out, many in tears. He had a fantastic career with not a breath of scandal, and was a tremendous example for the youth of today in not only their sporting ambitions but also their progress through life. The world is a poorer place for his passing at such an early age. Diana Edwards, Agnetha in top Abba tribute band Bjorn Again, who play to packed houses all over the world, is complementing this part of her career by embarking on a solo career commencing on Thursday evening at the White Swan in Dronfield, where she guests when not

on tour at the very successful open mic nights on Tuesday’s hosted by ex-Human League member, Russ Dennett. Other notable guests on this evening include Sunny Daye, local band the Score, Mick and Andy Birks with dad Tony, Chris Paul, Sean Taylor, Emma Naylor, Pete Morgan, James Tucker, Chris Firminger and a few capable amateur regulars including Hannah Aram. Lizzie Palmer, Bailey Whyatt and recently a nice lass Ruth. This spectacular night of fabulous entertainment is enhanced by the wonderful guitar ability and rapacious wit of my great pal Russ Dennett. I was very pleased to receive an invitation from Bev Lister, the champion of local charity ‘Sincere Support’ who held a cabaret dinner at the Park Hotel, Meadowhead. This was a fantastic night of entertainment starring Gary Phillips, Acoustic Angels and a brilliant guest appearance by top local comedian Jimmy Carol who had appeared earlier in the evening at the Curry and Comedy night at Dronfield’s Hilltop Sports and Social Club. As now seems to be par for the course on Saturday night in Dronfield, we had to ‘double up’ as we did not want to miss spending some time celebrating Johnny Howe’s birthday bash at the Victoria, where the entertainment was provided by the very talented Steve Birks in his alter ego, Vincent. I mischievously requested that he dedicated his self-penned song ‘Ugly Women’ to pub regulars Amanda and Donna , who are in reality attractive, and the ever diplomatic Vincent dedicated James Blunt’s ‘ You’re Beautiful ‘ instead before my request. An event I really look forward to, The Middle Handley charity gig, to benefit Stubbin Wood School, organised by Andy Birks and held in the grounds of his dad’s house, is not to be missed. Artistes appearing include Acoustic Angels, Junkyard Dog, Badge, The Rogues, Firecracker, The Score, Steve Delaney, James Tucker and Ruinetti. This event is so fantastic that we will be there for 1pm after a ten hour flight from Mexico landing at Machester at 10am that morning.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, ‘You’re really doing great, aren’t you?’ Morris replied, ‘Just doing what you said, Doc: ‘Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.’’ The doctor said, ‘I didn’t say that.. I said, ‘You’ve got a heart murmur; be careful.’ The British train was quite crowded. A US Marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well dressed, middleaged, French woman’s poodle. The war-weary Marine asked, “Ma’am, may I have that seat?” The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular, “Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat.” The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog. “Please, ma’am. May I sit down? I’m very tired.” She snorted, “Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant!” This time the Marine didn’t say a word; he just picked up the little dog, tossed it out the train window, and sat down. The woman shrieked, “Someone must defend my honor! Put this American in his place!” An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up. “Sir, you Americans seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You hold the fork in the wrong hand. You drive your autos on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you seem to have thrown the wrong b***h out the window.”

Legislation surrounding stem cell research is a particularly intriguing and controversial subject right now, so, in honour of that, today’s column is all about … the Eurovision Song Contest. Did you watch it? Or were you one of the many who thinks it’s a load of old snozcrumpet? When I ask people if they watch Eurovision, they either say one of two things: “yes”, they nod enthusiastically, or “I’m not watching that tosh!” Actually, some people might be going out, so that’s three replies. And others might say: “I’m watching Britain’s Got Talent,” so it’s actually four. Realistically, there’s a load of things a person might say, but that’s not the point. Actually, I’ve forgotten what the point is, but that’s not the point either. Oh yes, the issue is that Eurovision polarises viewers – it’s like Katie Price (you either loathe her or hate her)… OK so it’s not actually like Katie Price (in that she’s a person (sort of) and the Eurovision Song Contest is a song contest (sort of), but it does invoke strong opinions. Eurovision was always a family institution at our house back in the seventies. We all watched, and, like Miss World, we enjoyed it enormously. Decades later, not having any kids of my own, it seemed only right to steal* some from the local park and force them at Haribo point to watch with me. I think it gives the whole event a sense of occasion. *The Mercury newspaper does not condone kidnapping - unless you’re the Child Snatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in which case the management team is fifty fifty about whether it’s a valid career path. Anyway, Eurovision is supposed to be a means of overcoming cultural stumbling blocks, but as everyone votes for their neighbours and no one likes the UK (can’t think why), it’s all becoming something of an Eastern European votefest… Azerbaijan won, so next year’s Eurovision will be held in milking barn number three. But if you’re worried about comments that the host country can’t afford important things like lights, rest assured that the Government found some left over nuclear fuel from Syria which will make the event positively glowing. Love it or hate Eurovision, it really is just a bit of harmless fun, although losing to Jedward was a bit of a bitter pill to swallow (I can think of a few pills I’d like to get Jedward to swallow). More hard hitting political commentary next week.

NEWS GEORGE MICHAEL It’s the news his millions of fans across the world have been hoping for. This summer George Michael makes his eagerly awaited return to the stage with Symphonica: The Orchestral Tour, his first European dates since the widely acclaimed 25 Live tour concluded in Copenhagen in August 2008. One of British music’s greatest singer-songwriters and most loved artists, George Michael has never toured like this; he will perform not only a carefully chosen selection of his own songs, spanning all his remarkable, near 30-year career, but he will cover some of his favourite songs from other artists. The music will be re-worked and re-arranged for the orchestra which will accompany George at each location. This new classical setting will give each song added layers and new nuances. It’s unmistakeably George Michael, but not as we’ve ever known him. Symphonica will be both a new musical direction for George, fulfilling a long-cherished artistic ambition and a significant cultural exchange, not least since many of the concerts will take place in specially selected venues - the first time George has played such settings - in countries including Denmark, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Ireland and the UK. The tour will begin in August in the Czech Republic’s capital, Prague at the State Opera House. Since its opening in 1888, this venue has been regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful theatres. Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Nellie Melba and Enrico Caruso are just some of the towering figures of opera who have passed through its exquisite portals. After Prague, other venues will include black tie events at London’s Royal Opera House and Paris’s Palais Garnier, home of the city’s Opera from 1875 to 1989. Several of the venues have been specially chosen for their architectural beauty, their quality of sound and their cultural history. The combination of Europe’s finest venues and arenas, popular music’s most exquisite singer-songwriter and a symphony orchestra will make an ideal setting for this unique experience. A much-loved, enduringly popular figure in music, George Michael’s career has evolved from the era-defining pop of Wham! to a solo career of extraordinary lyrical beauty, genuine emotional depth and life-affirming melody. For all the spine-tingling intimacy of his music and his stillspectacular voice, George Michael fills stadiums and arenas across the globe, making the prospect of him appearing in the exclusive settings of the Symphonica tour more special still. A magical experience awaits singer and audience alike... Tickets for George Michaels’ Motorpoint Arena debut, on Friday 2nd December 2011, priced £86, £76, £51 (booking fee may apply) went on sale at 10am on Monday 16th May. Tickets are available in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarena. co.uk .

Flowers (Wisdom, Myths & Legends) We don’t always appreciate a flower’s beauty. Each flower has its own story. I would like to enlighten you about the Wisdom, Myth and Legend of a number of flowers. Carnation According to legend, the Carnation was first seen at Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. They became associated with Mother’s day when Anna Jarvis delivered 500 of them at its first celebration in 1908 which took place in America.

His blood fell on a pink hyacinth and has since symbolised sorrow and lost friendship. I hate white Hyacinths as their smell reminds me of death. When I worked at the hospital we never put red and white flowers together as this again predicts that death is imminent. Narcissus From an ancient Greek legend, Narcissus the son of Cephisus so admired his own beauty that he constantly gazed at his own reflection in a pool of water. He ignored the nymphs at the pool calling for his attention, one of which was Echo. One day he reached out to embrace his own image, fell into the pool and drowned. A single white Narcissus tinged red at the centre and representing Echo’s pierced heart was found floating near-by.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally So you think you know where your purse is? PC Jessica Burbeary ... Read on for some crime prevention advice on how to keep your belongings safe The chances of you or a member of your family becoming a victim of crime are very low. However, you can help eradicate this chance at all by taking a few sensible precautions. Many may be things you already do. Making yourself safer doesn’t mean changing your entire lifestyle or personality and it certainly doesn’t mean never going out at all! Bag dips – where an offender reaches into a person’s pocket bag or purse are more likely to occur in cramped and crowded places where offenders can come into close proximity with their intended target without arousing suspicion, for example in markets and shops. Two common techniques to be aware of are: 1. Dipping: Reaching into the victim’s pocket, purse, or bag 2. Distraction: Creating a scene, asking for directions, or otherwise distracting the victim’s attention from his or her property. Often thieves will shield their working hand with a coat or newspaper in his free hand, providing a screen to work behind. BE SAFE, BE SECURE • Spread your valuables around your person. Perhaps keep your purse in your bag and your keys in your pocket. • Try not to advertise your valuables. When you have finished using your purse put it away into your bag immediately. Don’t keep it on show. • Keep any bank card separate from your cheque book. • Treat your cards like cash. Never let them out of your sight and NEVER keep your PIN number with your cards. • If you feel uncomfortable with someone near to you; move away. • Don’t carry large amounts of cash on you. • Always keep handbags zipped up or closed, ensuring valuables such as purses, mobile phones and keys are stored at the bottom. • Never leaving bags unattended even for a few seconds and be alert to anyone around who might be acting suspiciously. • Although quite small, purse bells make considerable noise when disturbed and may alert the victim to the fact someone might be trying to take their bag or purse. These can be obtained from police crime prevention officers at your local police station. These simple steps can greatly increase your personal safety and security. Remember, look and act confident and always be safe and be secure.

Libraries BBC Domesday Community Opening Hours and Reloaded Mobile Library The BBC is asking the people of Britain to take a walk down memory lane back to 1986 – when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, mullets were the craze, Maradona’s “Hand of God” destroyed a nation’s World Cup dreams, the first Japanese car manufacturing plant opened in the UK and the ZX Spectrum was the game console of choice. One of the most comprehensive digital time capsules has been unearthed through BBC Domesday Reloaded, providing a rarely-seen snapshot of what local areas looked like 25 years ago. The public is being asked to explore and, more importantly, update previously unseen images and articles from their local area by going onto the dedicated Domesday website. The campaign, led by BBC Learning, runs throughout the summer of 2011 and invites you to participate by updating local photos and text which were submitted in 1986. To Participate in BBC Domesday Reloaded The map on the website www.bbc.co.uk/domesday - is divided into D-blocks and you can find yours by typing in your postcode. When you click on your local D-block you may find photos and text from 1986, but please note not all D-blocks had submissions. If there are photos and text on your local or neighbouring D-blocks we would like you to add your 2011 updates. Photo update - Click update under the photo where it says update, fill in the required information, and you are then sent an email for each photo submission and you have to reply with the appropriate photo. Text update - Click into the text box and at the bottom of the text page is the option to update the text, and once you click you can fill in the required information and update the text, and you are sent a note of thanks by email. A small group of people from Sheffield 50+ participated in a workshop for Domesday Reloaded and updated one or two of the projects. Liz Frampton said “Domesday Reloaded is really interesting and I will be updating some of the information plus adding some of my own.”

The closing date is Monday, 27 June 2011, and you need to finish your project or activity by 31 December 2011. Service Reductions, 2011/12
As a result of Sheffield City Council’s £84 million budget savings for 2011/12 the decision has been taken to reduce the library budget by £1.4 million. This includes the decision to reduce the Mobile Library Service from four vehicles to one vehicle and to reduce the opening hours in most community libraries. SCC is conducting a public consultation from Monday, 8 May – Saturday, 4 June inclusive with a combination of an online survey and hard copy questionnaires in community libraries. For the Mobile Library Service, as well as a questionnaire on the Mobile vehicles and an online survey SCC are also writing separately to individual customers who have used the service over the last 12 months. The proposed changes to the Mobile Library service can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/ Consultation1174

Mark Twain once said “the best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.” Radio Nightingale provides a special service to cheer up the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. So why not cheer yourself up by joining the Radio Nightingale team. Volunteering isn’t just good for the soul. It can also put you on track to improve your career. Whether you’re currently studying, in work or out of work volunteering is a great way o develop new skills, build your confidence and show future employers that you’ve got drive and initiative. Over 70% of employers say that they would hire a candidate with volunteering experience over someone who has never volunteered. Volunteering offers the chance to have amazing experiences, make friends with people from all walks of life, and who knows, perhaps even find love! And it has been medically proven that ‘doing good’ can give you a heightened sense of well being and a stronger immune system. Remember though that if you want to use volunteering to develop your career, treat it as work, not a hobby. Only a small part of Radio Nightingale’s work is about presenting programmes, keeping the station running takes a lot of work and volunteers are needed to help with a range of jobs. This includes ward visiting and request collecting, fundraising activities and administrative duties, as well as operating the studio equipment and presenting programmes. You don’t need any expert knowledge or technical expertise to be successful at Radio Nightingale, most important is a willingness to learn and be part of a team and be able to make a regular commitment. Alternatively we have some more casual, as and when, opportunities available. If you would like to find out more or if you’re ready to cheer yourself up and get involved in Radio Nightingale contact us on 01709 304244 or admin@ radionightingale.org.uk

FROM SPIN ANYONE FOR CYCLE TO A BERMUDA RICH LIST SHORT CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
As I was trawling through last week’s Sunday Times Rich List*, as you do, looking for someone I might know (haven’t found anyone yet!) I noticed the name of former club entertainer Engelbert Humperdinck. It was interesting to see that among the top 50 music millionaires, the lad from Leicester was ranked in 40th position, estimated to be worth a cool £60 Million. There were a few other names there who had used clubs early in their musical careers when starting out on the road to fame and fortune. Engelbert has done very well indeed not only to have become famous in the first place but to have kept his fame and fortune. The son of a local launderette manager, Gerry Dorsey turned up with a saxophone at Spinney’s Hill WMC in Leicester back in 1965, and performed to an audience of 200. Few there realised that he would be catapulted into stardom as Engelbert Humperdinck and perhaps didn’t give him their full attention! Such a crowd would be a very welcome sight now on a Saturday night for many clubs who see many less than that coming through their doors. But back in the sixties and seventies, Sunday lunchtimes were a popular time for concerts especially for young performers keen to show off their talents. This was the era of the ‘shop window’ and it would be great to see this practice revived to promote new performers and clubs. Engelbert might not have impressed the audiences too much at the club but he made a debut single that stays in our collective memories and probably accounts for some of his current fortune in royalties- Please Release Me, which sold 150 million copies. His smoochy, cool style was a bit hit with the ladies and clearly a few of the men as well. He went global, and gave Tom Jones, another huge star who kicked off his career in clubs in Wales, a run for his money for the accolade of top solo star of the sixties. Both started off from humble origins and clubs gave them their first breaks, and probably their first difficult and critical audiences to deal with. The experience served them well as they went on to sing all over the world. I’m sure they remember very clearly where they came from- it would be nice if they popped back to clubland more often and raised their golden voices in support of the clubs. Make mine a pint, Engelbert, of champagne!

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Well what an interesting few days it’s been. One of my best mates always throws a party on the night of the Eurovision Song Contest and never ceases to amaze me each year with the lengths he goes to. Since the whole thing was staged in Germany this year, he stuck to his own tradition of mirroring the theme of the hosting nation. We had German sausages on sticks, German smoked cheese, a Black Forest style trifle and Bavarian themed adornments around the room. When it came to the contest itself, which is also shown on a giant projector screen, you may know that there was the usual selection of odd looking acts, the somewhat sadly out of place British act and the plain old sheer unusual. Then there was the matter of the scoring of course. A UK or even Irish Jedward win might have made buying the food for next year a bit more simple, but where’s he going to start looking for an Azerbaijan supermarket? Anyway, if you haven’t heard already we’re giving you the chance to sample a far off culture too very soon and in person. Next week my colleague Nick Wright will be broadcasting his midday show from the isle of Bermuda. If you listen closely, you may also win a luxury holiday there for you and your partner as well. Tune in from Monday to hear more. Plus in the meantime, I’ll catch you in the mornings as ever with the best of the 60s, 70s and more at breakfast time along with plenty more giveaways on the Magic Word and all the news you need. See you then Trevor
GOOD NEWS FROM CLUBLAND Two new clubs have opened in Sheffield in the last couple of weeks - Chaucer Social and Boundary Academy - a number of our club and pub advertisers in different areas are reporting increased trade and good nights of live entertainment. Our neighbours (Queens Road Social) have been packing out the concert room with over 400 at the last two gigs, by putting on rock nights which are tapping into the local student population. People are looking for a good value night out - funnily enough, the financial squeeze will in some ways give clubland opportunities it has not had for years! Don’t be downhearted! Seize the moment and drag back the audiences who have moved on over the years - they are looking for exactly what we can offer!

LIVE REVIEW by KT Evans SOYO Live SOYO - 16/05
Everyone loves a good ole knees up round their birthday, with SOYO Live being no exception. Celebrating it’s second year of hosting local, up-and-coming talents across the region, Monday nights at the popular music venue on Rockingham Street has shone a whole new, exciting perspective onto Sheffield music. Drawing in crowds that easily meet the venues large capacity, the line-up never fails to get people going and supporting unsigned music in the City. It’s fair to say therefore that this Monday had to be a pretty special one…too right it was! Opening the birthday bash; Sheffield four piece Blue Lip Feel, who as always didn’t fail to put on a lively, ‘Strokes-style’ performance. Notable for not only the venue but the band aswell, this gig was their guitarist’s last ever performance with Blue Lip Feel, therefore made sure to go out with a bang. Enticing the audience with catchy tracks off their back catalogue, ‘Tulips to the Top’ and ‘Midnight,’ a guitar fuelled, rock ‘n’ roll inspired number, their tunes successfully combine memorable lyrics and intricate bass line sessions. Although transferring passion for their sound onto the stage itself will no doubt come through practice, Blue Lip Feel are a time bomb waiting to explode into something very special indeed. Next up on the sought-after bill, The Salvo, who could quite easily supply a wig shop with enough hair to never go out of business. With a reformed sound that tests the ‘underground’ waters, the fourpiece from Sheffield sound remarkably polished to say that this was one of their first gigs to unveil their re-mastered image. Energy and charisma comes in bucket loads with this lot, who are no doubt clearly driven by rock infused, indie-esque melodies. With crowd favourite and arguably the most accomplished off the bands repertoire, ‘Inclination to Please’ was performed twice throughout the set, successfully closing the Salvo’s live performance. Preceding these, Skeletons, who with huge crowd support and a clearly dedicated fan base, put on one hell of a show. Known for their energetic stage presence, Skeletons headlined the BBC Introducing Stage at Leeds Festival in 2008, therefore are evidently masters of their craft. Demonstrating
LOCKUP IN LEEDS Leeds Festival is literally just round the corner now, preparing itself to eject musical madness onto the masses at Bramham Park around August Bank holiday weekend. With a line-up arguably the best the festival producers have ever put together, things could only get better with the announcement of a new name added to the LockUp Stage’s bill. If you’ve ever been to Leeds Festival (if you haven’t, what are you playing at?!) you’ll be aware of the different stage genres, aiding the festivals versatility and wide-spread appeal. The Lock-Up Stage, described by NME as ‘where the real action is,’ combines underground punk and hardcore acts, delivering the festival’s dirty rock spirit, fearing some but intriguing all. Recently being signed to the stage for 2011; no other than Letlive, a post hardcore five piece from across the waters. Having being featured in various publications as ‘one of the most exciting bands in the world,’ Letlive formed in 2002 and have rapidly gained quite a fan base for themselves. Their first studio album Exhaustion, Saltwater and Everything Inbetween in 2004 saw the band’s career take off, along with their accomplished stage presence and song writing ability. Although variations among the groups lineup, Letlive went on to release Speak Like You Talk in 2005 proceeded by Fake history in 2010. This is to be re-released in 2011, preparing crowds for the bands festival appearances at Leeds and Reading along with rock lovers Download in June. Playing Leeds Festival on the Sunday 29th August and Reading on 28th, these punk personnels are set to share the Lock-Up stage which some major acts, with Descendants headlining the stage on the Friday whilst The Mighty Mighty Bosstones snatch the primary spot on the closing Sunday. Other acts on the infamous Lock-Up Stage include Flogging Molly, The Bronx and Comeback Kid, major players within the hardcore scene. If you can’t quite see yourself as a metal head however, fear not as the main stage has a line-up which will no doubt appeal to every walk of live. Headliners on the ‘big cheese’ main stage include Sheffield’s Pulp, The Strokes, My Chemical Romance and Muse, who have a reputation as delivering one of the best live performances in the world. Sharing the bill also includes Thirty Seconds to Mars, The Blackout and Two Door Cinema Club, each set to blow the 80,000 + festival capacity out of their minds. that these guys sure as hell know how to pick up the pace, electric riffs were not in short supply as demonstrated in tracks such as ‘O’h Brother! O’h Sister,’ a vocally experimental, soft-rock influenced number. With the venue now well and truly heaving with trendies, a short interlude only exaggerated the wait for the headlining act, Dead Sons. Quite possibly the best live band in Sheffield, Dead Sons entwine dirty rock ‘n’ roll undertones with stomping bass lines, delivering a totally unique sound compared to the rest of the other bands on the set. Working the crowd to their advantage, catching a glimpse of the group was a mission in itself; it seemed as though everyone wanted to get involved with the five piece from the Steel City. From start to finish their set never dulled, not to mention stark strobe lighting and smoke machine…hey these guys sure know how to put on a show when it matters most. Transferring their love of music onto the audience, it’s fair to say the whole venue was impressed by Dead Sons, no doubt the best band of the night by a long shot.
COLOURMUSIC
Welcome to the beautifully strange world of Colourmusic, a place where concept albums, an LP named “My _____ is Pink” in this case, have nothing to do with structured narratives or loosely-linked lyrics. More like musical walls that must be climbed, whether that means shunning acoustic guitars or modeling the rhythm section of some songs after metronomic sex acts. Which isn’t as titillating as it sounds. The way lead singer Ryan Hendrix sees it, “We wanted to focus on human sexuality and reproduction. Not in terms of turning people on; from a point of view of fear and anxiety, and how it’s the prominent decision-making force in many people’s lives.” That explains a couple things, starting with My _____ is Pink’s actual sound. Rounded out by bassist Colin Fleishacker, drummer Nicholas Ley, and British guitarist Nick Turner, Colourmusic’s new material amounts to an ever-evolving mass of melancholic melodies, gauzy vocals, shifty beats, and monophonic musical structures. Not to mention glimpses of agnostic gospel grooves (“You For Leaving Me”), hip-shaking R&B (“Feels Good To Wear”), acid-drenched pop (“Tog”), and Bladerunner-inspired psych (“Pororoca”, which means — quite tellingly —“great destructive noise” in many parts of South America). And then there’s “The Little Death”, a fivepart foray into the outer realm of sandblasted rock, subterranean drone tones, and the kind of headphone-ready hooks that cause weak-willed speakers to spontaneously combust. Like a yellow brick road to the second circle of hell (that’s lust, if you haven’t visited Dante’s Inferno in a while), it’s a ten-minute guide to what makes Colourmusic tick. Well, sort of. Truth be told, the Oklahoma-based band isn’t spelling anything out. “If you write a song that’s too literal, it dates it,” explains Hendrix. “We’d rather make things a little more subconscious. It gives a song a longer life span because you never know what’s really going on.” “The music tells us what the song is going to be about,” says Hendrix. “Once we have a drum beat, it’s alive. And once we come back to it, it’s basically beckoning us to finish it.” Colourmusic will be performing at SXSW, ahead of UK and European shows in May and June. PETS CORNER
PROBLEM PET BEHAVIOUR If you have a problem with your pet’s behaviour then you are not alone – many types of behaviour can become problematic for owners, including noise phobias, problems when a pet is left alone and aggressive behaviour. Over 165,000 dogs, for example, show aggression towards people on a weekly basis. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “Many behavioural problems in pets can be linked to their early life experiences. Aggressive behaviour, for example, is often due to fear. A pet can become fearful of something because they were not introduced to it during their first few weeks of life, which is a particularly sensitive period of their development. In other cases their fear may be due to a negative experience they had when they were younger.” The good news is that problem behaviour can often be prevented or treated, so PDSA has put the following tips together on how to prevent and manage problem behaviour in pets: Socialisation Socialisation is one of the most important things you can do for young pets. It’s all about letting them meet people and other animals, and letting them experience lots of everyday sights and sounds, especially in their first few weeks of life. Remember, though, that the experiences must be good ones! If your pet seems anxious or afraid when they’re doing or seeing something new, calmly end what they’re doing, remain positive and upbeat and do something different instead. Well socialised puppies and kittens are more likely to grow up to be friendly and outgoing dogs and cats. For free downloadable leaflets on behaviour and training, log onto www.pdsa.org. uk/leaflets

Angler’s Corner by Clint Walker
This week, I thought I’d take a quick look at these offerings from Crosse & Blackwell, supplied by online retailer www.heatermeals.co.uk Self heating meals are not a new innovation, indeed they have been since 1897 believe it or not! Invented by Russian engineer Federov, they were originally designed for use by adventurers, explorers and mountaineers, before being developed further for use by the Military in WW1. Since then however, the concept has been refined to offer a wide range of ready meals and beverages to the hungry user. Most, if not all of the self heating meal systems use a chemical base to produce an exothermic reaction to create heat to cook or warm the food within. The pouched meals generally use saline water and calcium oxide or magnesium/iron generators to achieve the required temperatures to ensure the contents are edible. Now we know the history, what does this offer to the angler? Obviously, there is no need to carry a stove, burner or heat source of any kind; the food has an extremely long shelf life, suitable to throw in the car or van and forget about until really needed, it provides hot food in potentially dangerous weather conditions and the used generator can serve as a hand or body warmer when cooking is complete! There are many varieties available, so I’ve picked just one to investigate..... www.heatermeals.co.uk has a comprehensive range of ready meals on their website, including vegetarian and halal options to cater for every option; today I’ve sampled the Beef Ravioli in Mushroom gravy. Supplied in a handy pack with a spoon and instructions, it’s a simple way to get hot food quickly. Opening the packaging reveals a pouch of food, a small ‘bag’ of saline solution and the sleeve containing the chemical generator. The basic premise is that the food is placed in the sleeve with the generator, and the saline solution added before the whole thing is sealed for 10-12 minutes to heat up as the chemical reaction is initiated. Once the required time has elapsed, the meal pouch is removed and the top torn open to allow access to the food within; simple. Be warned though, these do get very hot! The picture on the front of Beef Ravioli bore no resemblance to my meal as the company choose to use a generic food image, so don’t be too surprised! Once prepared, the food was very tasty, didn’t leak from the container, and had plenty of sauce, so wasn’t dry in any way. Many of the self heating meals from other brands can suffer uneven heating if not placed on a flat surface, but this was completely hot throughout and took exactly the time stated to be ready. In colder weather, users are advised to leave for a couple of extra minutes, but even extremely low temperatures do not affect the preparation of heatermeals. Priced at around £5, they are an excellent option for a standby meal when you forget to fuel your stove or run out of gas!

Racing Form
by Timelord
Irish Guineas Weekend at the Curragh, Temple Stakes at Haydock This weekend’s racing on this side of the Irish seas is populated mainly by difficult handicaps with a few Listed races. The Group 2 Temple Stakes over 5 furlongs at Haydock is the best we can offer on Saturday. In Ireland however they hold their Guineas races at The Curragh and have a couple of other Group races in support. The Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup over 10.5 furlongs (3.10 Sunday)looks to be the best race of the whole weekend and has all the makings of a cracking contest, even if they don’t all turn up. The entries for this race read like a “Who’s Who?” of the top older horses in the UK and Ireland. Workforce is entered and must have a good chance based on last year’s exploits. Aidan O’Brien’s entries read like a stable star list of his older horses including: Cape Blanco; Fame and Glory; Jan Vermeer; So You Think; Viscount Nelson; and St Nicholas Abbey, to name but a few. Add in a few from other leading Irish stables, a couple of Godolphin hotpots and one or two others from leading stables over here and you have the makings of a mighty confrontation. In such a competitive race it is hard to be dogmatic about the chances of any individual. If Workforce is to be taken on this year this may be the time when he is most vulnerable as it is his first race of the year. Cape Blanco beat him twice last year and could be dangerous to dismiss, as could the other O’Brien inmates Jan Vermeer, Fame and Glory, So You Think and Viscount Nelson. Multiple Group 1 winning Australian import So You think easily won a Group 3 as he liked last time out and genuinely could be real top class in Europe. However, in what should be a highly entertaining and informative contest I am just favouring Dermot Weld’s Famous Name who has won his last three outings, has had a couple of prep races and won a Group 3 by seven lengths last time out. Admittedly this is a better race than he has ever won so far but it is just possible that he has improved over the winter and he could be in for a good year. He is likely to be reasonable value given his CV against those of the opposition but he has come up short in five previous attempts to win a Group 1 event and therefore rates only an each way bet. The Irish 2000 Guineas (3.45 Saturday) looks to be something of a disappointing race. The entries look to me to be just short of real top class, the best of whom could be Zoffany. Dubawi Gold ran a cracker in our 2000 Guineas and has improved this year. He is the one to beat on form so far. Dunboyne Express is a horse I like. He won on his seasonal return and might be up to this class. I also like Master of Hounds who could be an each way prospect. However, in a race that I find a little difficult to fathom, I am relying on Aidan O’Brien’s Zoffany to do the business first time out, but it wouldn’t surprise me greatly if any of the others were to win. In the 1000 Guineas I have a dozen or so within 10 points in my speed ratings. Top rated by 1 point is Jessica Harrington’s filly Siren’s Song who won a listed contest last time. Second best in that system is David Wachman’s unbeaten filly Chrysanthemum. I find it difficult to choose between these two and at 10/1 and 12/1 respectively they both have decent each way chances. On balance I think that I just favour Chrysanthemum but it is a mighty close call. If turning out for this race the Godolphin filly White Moonstone must also hold a good chance as an unbeaten Group 1 winner. Others within a few points of these are: Majestic Dubawi (good each way chance at big odds), Asheerah, Kirinda, Together, Laughing Lashes, Theysken’s Theory, Banimpire (improved of late to win her last three races, including a Group 3 contest), Misty For Me and Cape Dollar. The best race this side of the Irish sea is undoubtedly the Group 2 Temple Stakes that, intriguingly, still has an entry for Hungarian speedball Overdose. This animal is something of a phenomenon in mainland Europe and could simply leave them all for dead. He has been beaten only once in his career and, yes you guessed it, this was when it carried some of my hard-earned! Based purely on the “weddings and funerals” philosophy therefore I am leaving it alone this weekend but it has got a good chance. Instead I am going for an old favourite in Borderlescott, who is already a dual Group 1 winner at this distance and has as good a chance as any in a competitive event. My next best would have to be Bryan Smart’s improving Tangerine Trees who looks bound for better things. Although he has to improve a little I don’t think that we have yet seen the best of him and he looks a big danger to the selection. The remainder of our racing comprises tricky handicaps and Listed contests. I have given the usual shortlists for the TV racing below, selections in order of preference as usual. Saturday: Haydock: 2.00 Mahab El Shamaal, Jehanbux, Spyder, Halfsin, Borug 2.30 Mariachi Man, Orientalist, Fred Willetts, Rigolleto, Cruiser, Polar Kite 3.00 Borderlescott, Tangerine Trees, Overdose, Prohibit, Rose Blossom, Kingsgate Native, Goodwood: 2.15 West Coast Dream, Humidor, Spirit of Sharjah, Rowe Park, Parisian Pyramid, Elnawin 2.45 Classic Vintage, Nave, Ted Spread, Sunwise, Prompter, Halicarnassus, Harlestone Times 3.20 City Leader, Distant Memories, Class Is Class, Fanditha, Spanish Duke York: 3.10 Prospect Wells, Palomar, Cracking Lass, Ted Spread, Caucus, Times Up 3.40 Strike Up The Band, Judge ‘N’ Jury, Barney McGrew, Mon Brav, Bertoliver, Hotham The Curragh: 3.45 Zoffany, Dunboyne Express, Dubawi Gold, Master of Hounds, Oracle, Roderic O’Connor Sunday: The Curragh: 3.10 Famous Name, So You Think, Viscount Nelson, Jan Vermeer, Mid Mon Lady 4.15 Chrysanthemum, Siren’s Song, Majestic Dubawi

Football teams from across Sheffield have joined together to raise money for a local cancer charity after a young Beighton Magpies player tragically lost his mum to the illness earlier this year. The Beighton Magpies U8s Team decided to hold collections at the club in memory of the young players` mum to raise money to support a local cancer charity in her memory. The Sheffield Junior Football Community on hearing of the young players` loss decided to come together in an overwhelming action of goodwill to provide support and in turn have also raised a considerable amount of money which will be donated to the Weston Park Hospital, where the players` mum received treatment during her illness. This tragic loss comes just two years after the father of the same Beighton Magpies player also sadly passed away. This story has touched the hearts of many people involved with junior football in the area and has led to teams associated with Beighton Magpies joining in to raise money after matches including Throstles and Sheffield Rangers U8’s who held collections after their game on 27th March 2011. The proceeds of which will be donated to both the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and the Simon Orphanage in Zambia. The touching community spirit shown by the various junior teams across Sheffield is a powerful reminder of how local football can help members of its community in times of need and support. The Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity helps hundreds of people not only around the region but across the UK and provides patients and their families with unprecedented support helping them

SOME of the best riders British Speedway has to offer will do battle at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium on Thursday (7.45). The British Semi-Final will feature 16 riders doing battle for seven places available for next month’s British Final at Wolverhampton. And the headline clash will feature Chris Harris and Scott Nicholls, the two riders who have dominated the British Championship in recent years. Tigers chief Neil Machin said: “The British Final remains one of the most prestigious events on the calendar and we have 32 riders in the semis all desperate to get through. “From a Sheffield perspective we are once again delighted to be staging a semi-final and I’m sure we will see some excellent action. “There is a lot of interest in the meeting and we will be looking to do the meeting justice with our presentation and atmosphere. “Every point is vital, particularly if you are sat on six or seven going into your last ride the pressure is on to make the cut so we should see some fast and furious action.” Sheffield riders Ricky Ashworth, Josh Auty and Paul Cooper are all included along with former Owlerton favourite Richard Hall. BRITISH SEMI-FINAL LINE-UP: SHEFFIELD: Thursday, May 19: Ritchie Hawkins (Rye House), Craig Cook (Edinburgh / Belle Vue), Chris Harris (Belle Vue), Andrew Tully (Edinburgh), Jordan Frampton (Rye House / Belle Vue), James Wright (Workington / Birmingham), Kyle Newman (Poole / Newcastle / Dudley), Ben Barker (Plymouth / Birmingham), Josh Auty (Sheffield / Coventry), Richard Hall (Leicester), Derek Sneddon (Newcastle), Paul Cooper (Unattached), Ricky Ashworth (Sheffield), Scott Nicholls (Swindon), Danny King (Birmingham), Dakota North (Somerset / Peterborough).

OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday academy manager Sean McAuley has revealed that two players have graduated this year to first team professional status. Goalkeeper Sean Cuff and defender Cecil Nyoni have each been offered contracts and McAuley says both youngsters will face greater challenges from next season. He said: “We have made contract offers to Sean and Cecil. “We’re really fortunate that our goalkeepers get to work with Andy Rhodes, the first team goalkeeper coach. He has a big say in retaining Sean. “We’ll have to find an appropriate programme now for Sean to challenge him. “We’ve also taken Cecil Nyoni, who throughout the two years here has shown good promise and has excelled in games were he’s kept company that outweigh the experience he has had.” McAuley added: “It’s an individual programme, not results orientated and we’re here to support the success of the club at first team level.”

Chairman John Ryan told doncasterroversfc. co.uk last week that the bids - £2.3m for Sharp and £300,000 for Coppinger - were rejected out-of-hand. He has also made it clear that Rovers are not interested in selling either players, stating both are central to the club’s plans for next season. Mr. Ryan said: “Sean O’Driscoll is determined to build a quality squad to go into next season and these two players are pivotal to that desire.” “The Club remains ambitious and feels that with a bit more luck with injuries and refereeing decisions we can be a real force in the Championship next season.” “Sharp and Coppinger are without doubt wonderful players that are getting better and better.” “I’m very confident, if they both remain fit, they will influence our campaign in a very positive way.” “I’m confident Billy can notch 25 goals next season, with James providing the bullets for him, along with others.” “Myself, the directors, the management team and the players are looking forward to a great season next term - and we’re looking up rather than down.”

Trevor Birch is stepping down as chief executive of Sheffield United - but will stay on as a consultant to the club in the short term. The move follows the club’s relegation from the Championship and the departure earlier today of manager Micky Adams and his number two Alan Cork. Over the next two or three months, Mr Birch will assist the Blades with its player trading, as well as the reorganisation and re-shaping of the club. Chairman Kevin McCabe said: “Trevor’s considerable contacts and experience will help us as we re-shape the football club and focus on our transfer dealings.”

The Sheffield Steelers will be holding a family fun day at Valley Centertainment on Saturday May 21st. Coinciding with the release of “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” the fun day will see staff (and probably quite a few visitors!) getting into the spirit of the day in their pirate outfits. A few Steelers players will also be there to meet and greet the fans, along with balloon modellers, face painters, and a bouncy castle for younger fans to enjoy. Steelers sales and marketing manager Rachael Bateson said of the event “We’ve teamed up with lots of local businesses to make the day a success. The Star will be coming down with their promotional roadshow, Unison is getting involved, we’ve got Costco coming down to set up a stand – the more the merrier really! We’ll have something for everyone, come rain or shine, there’ll be loads going on! Whether you’re an ice hockey fan and you do want two minutes with the guys or if you do just want to spend all day on the bouncy castle! The Sheffield Steelers Supporters Club will also be present, and fans will have their chance to sign up for their 2011-12 membership on the day. The SSSC AGM takes place on Thursday May 26th, and all applications to stand for the committee must be received by the Secretary by close of business on Thursday May 19th.
