NOMINATE YOUR OLYMPIC TORCHBEARER Sheffield City Council is calling for everyone in the city to get involved with the exciting plans for the Olympic Torch following the announcement yesterday that Sheffield will be one of the UK cities included on its route. The search is on across the UK for 8,000 inspiring people to carry the Olympic Flame next year. Each torchbearer will be someone with an inspiring story of personal achievement or contribution to their community, and the public

are being asked to make nominations. Simon Green, Sheffield City Council’s Executive Director of Place, said: “Sheffield is full of fantastic sporting talent, and this is the chance of a lifetime to give people a ‘moment to shine’. My nomination is an amazing young lady from the Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders called Carys Hall. “Carys has given up so much of her time to volunteer at sporting events over the last five years, and now acts as a mentor for

other young people who want to get into working in sport. She has such enthusiasm and passion for sport in Sheffield, and it’s a privilege to nominate her to be a torchbearer.” Carys said: “I was really shy before I got involved with the Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders in Sport, but now I’ve met people from all over the world by volunteering at sports events and I’ve become much more confident. It would be amazing to be an Olympic torchbearer, and one of my other ambitions is to volunteer

at the Olympic Games themselves.” Anyone can make a nomination through the LOCOG website at www.london2012.com/ olympictorchrelay Sheffield is one of 66 towns and cities announced this week that will be holding evening celebrations with the Olympic torch. Sheffield’s will be held on 25 June 2012. Simon Green continues: “We all know Sheffield knows how to throw a good party, and we’ll be announcing our plans over

the coming months for a knockout celebration on 25 June when the torch is here.” Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG said: “We are thrilled that Sheffield City Council has agreed to host the Olympic Flame on its journey right across the UK. The Olympic Flame will shine a light right across Sheffield, celebrating the culture and heritage of the area and showcasing the very best of the city. We have no doubt that the welcome Sheffield City Council will provide will

demonstrate how the spirit of the Olympic Games is reaching out across the UK and excitement builds as the start of the 2012 Games draws closer.” Sheffield - Lighting the Flame for Sport’ is a City partnership led by Sheffield City Council to maximise the benefits and opportunities around the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games for everyone in Sheffield.
