NEW CHARITY CHAIRMAN URGES SUPPORTERS TO ‘DO THEIR BIT’ A former local health chief executive is ‘doing his bit’ by taking on a key role at one of the region’s best loved charities. David Whitney has just been appointed chairman of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in a voluntary role that will see him oversee the work of the trustees and help steer and support the development of the charity. David was formerly Chief Executive of Central Sheffield University Hospitals which included Weston Park Hospital. David is also backing the charity’s ‘Do Your Bit’ campaign, also being
supported by Hollywood superstar Sean Bean, which is currently raising funds for a new state-of-the-art cancer research and treatment suite at Weston Park Hospital. This will allow patients access to a wider range of new cutting edge anti-cancer treatments, as well as enabling significant development of the hospital’s groundbreaking programme of clinical trials. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity needs to raise £1.5 million this year in order to fund pioneering cancer research and to help improve the treatments and care for people
living with cancer. David said: “We are privileged to have a facility like Weston Park Hospital on our doorstep and it has been at the forefront of research for many years, working in collaboration with local universities and other charities. “That is why it is vital people support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and its ‘Do Your Bit’ campaign, to ensure that we have the best facilities available for this research and treatment to take place. “Cancer is something that affects so many people and makes us all feel vulnerable. Through my new role
as chairman, I hope to help inspire people to get involved in the campaign through the charity’s events or their own fundraising.” David added: “Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity has an enormous number of superb people who are incredibly dedicated to their roles and the team is amazing in terms of the fundraising it already does. “It’s important to build on this existing success and identify opportunities to strengthen the charity’s remit into the wider region. We will be looking at and developing existing
priorities of the charity, which ultimately is to improve cancer services for patients and supporting them through their treatment.” Weston Park Hospital provides care for cancer patients from across the region, which means that patients from Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop, Chesterfield, and beyond benefit from donations made to the charity. To support the ‘Do Your Bit’ campaign visit: www.do-your-bit. org.uk or call Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity on 0114 2265370.

Copley’s Column
In this our one thousandth edition of this newspaper, I report with great sadness that our longest serving member of staff, senior salesman Stephen Thompson has sadly passed away at the age of seventy seven. This wonderful man worked to the very end and will be sadly missed. Working for the Mercury from the very beginning when it was launched by my very good friend Phil Booker, Stephen was a master of his craft, building up a rapport with all his customers. I had a good chat to him in the office this week when he advised me that it was work that was keeping him going, and I thought at the time how poorly he looked. His contribution to this newspaper has been immense, and I am sure that my work colleagues join with me in extending our deepest sympathy to his family. God Bless and God speed, Stephen, you were very special, both as a friend and a colleague. It is party time on Friday night at Crookes Club as we celebrate our reaching the thousandth issue with entertainment being provided by the Gutterband. Guest of honour on my table will be the man without it would never have been possible, our founder, Phil Booker, a great man respected throughout the local entertainment scene, and who introduced me to the wonderful world of journalism. In the early days, we were out in black and white, and changed to colour when the paper was taken over by another of my pals, David Hayes, who fittingly will be on drums on Friday night. Hopefully, our present proprietor, Glenn Wood will be making his presence felt on Friday by supplying me with copious quantities of John Smith’s smooth as I am now the longest serving member of staff if we don’t count the hilariously funny Albert Snodgrass, who readers will not be surprised to
learn is not a real person, but has supplied his weekly wit courtesy of three different people over the years. Rest assured, I shall have Stephen Thompson uppermost in my mind on Friday night. What a great pity that his massive contribution to this newspaper will not now be recognised on the night in person. One of my greatest pleasures in life these days is watching my girlfriend’s eleven year old son, Jack, playing rugby union for Chesterfield Panthers under twelve’s team, which he captains. Imagine my surprise on Sunday when I was approached by a young lady who I had noticed earlier because of her fervent support of the Panthers. It turned out to be a very good singer who I had befriended whilst she was competing in talent competition, ‘Search For A Star, Yolande Potgieter, who not only impressed me with her vocals, but also as a decent Christian woman. She was obviously immensely proud that her son, Connor, who has only recently joined the side, had scored the first try. I am ashamed to say that I did not recognise her at first, presumably because we were not in a club or that she was wearing little or no make-up, but my delight in renewing our acquaintance was plain to see. I am happy to include a photograph of Connor, which will hopefully go into his scrap-book as he progresses in the sport, and I feel that it does encourage youngsters to get a bit of publicity, at the same time allowing me to perform one of my hopefully many Christian acts of the week. Sheffield Wednesday gained a valuable win against Blackburn Rovers to help maintain their place in the Championship division while Sheffield United gained a point away from home at Walsall to help them in their bid to gain promotion to ensure that we have the wonderful derby matches next season. As Sheffielders, let us join together to wish them success in this venture.

Under New Management with New Chef
Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Dreams and Mythology We all experience strange dreams now and again. It is usually the younger generation that dream of mystical creatures. Below are some of the most common mystical figures to appear in dreams some you may recognise, some you may not. Hercules Dreaming of a figure like the ancient hero, Hercules, means that you need to sort out a problem with your attitude. Venus Dreaming of the Goddess of Love suggests that now is the time to take care of yourself and be proud of your body as a new lover is just around the corner. Artemis The Guardian Artemis is the virgin huntress, proud and wild, like the beasts she hunts. Dreaming of Artemis implies a wish to be more assertive in relationships with men. Narcissus Narcissus was a handsome young man who fell in love with his reflection. He reached into a pool to grasp his image but fell into the water and drowned. Narcissus was then turned into a flower, ensuring that he would always be close to his reflection. This dream warns against vanity and narcissism. It tells us not to be pre-occupied with our appearance.
Mermaids Dreaming of a mermaid suggests that we should look at our relationships and the uncharted depths of our minds to find the answers to any current problems or conflicts. Dreaming of water links to emotion. If the water is calm things will go well but if it is rough brace yourself for problems ahead. Neptune/Poseidon Neptune is the unruly Lord of the Sea. He disrupts the deep waters of the dreamer’s unconsciousness. However, his stormy, unpredictable temperament may prompt startling innovations in the dreamer’s creativity. Dreaming of Neptune suggests that you are about to take on a new project which may be rough at first but ultimately will bring you success. Pharaoh/Tutankhamun Just like King Midas, Tutankhamun is connected to gold. Dreaming of Tutankhamun implies wealth and a happy relationship. Dragons Fierce and fire breathing, the dragon brings us great riches. However, if you dream of a dragon it can also mean that you need to sort out your own dark forces. The dragon’s appearance tells you to deal with the destructive forces that are ruining aspects of your life and then you can enjoy your riches. Witches To dream of a witch foretells that you will leave home and live among strangers. If the witch attempts to injure you it denotes that you will be dependant upon strangers for support.
Peacocks To dream of a peacock means that you will marry a King Midas very attractive person. You will grow rich and be well King Midas is known for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold. A skill we may think respected in the community. we want, but as King Midas discovered, it was an ability that became a curse when his daughter became Magic To dream that you are under a magic spell is a sure a gold statue. If you dream of Midas it means that sign that you are making a great mistake in thinking there is no shortcut to perfection. You must draw upon your resources and not give anything away that a certain person is worthy of your regard. The dream warns you to be aware of thieves and vagabonds out you could use in the future. to steal from you. Achilles This is the last article about dreams for a while. If Like Sir Lancelot, Achilles is a flawed hero. The you would like more information regarding dreams greatest of the Greek warriors in the Trojan War, he please let me know. If you want a psychic reading was vindictive, ruthless and prone to uncontrollable rages and childish sulks. Dreaming of Achilles warns please call 078632353 or email psychicglynis@ talktalk.net. NEWS & INFORMATION
RIGHT FIRST TIME
At last week’s Members’ Meeting Steven Haigh gave a very interesting talk and answered questions about Right First Time. ‘Right First Time’ is the first part of the Right Care, Right Time, Right Place, Right Person strategy that aims to transform health and social care in Sheffield over the next 5-10 years. Steve Haigh is the Assistant Director of Strategy at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and is leading the programme. The aim of Right First Time is: • Making sure Sheffield residents continue to get the best possible health services is the aim of the partnership between GPs, local hospitals, mental and community health teams, the City Council and voluntary organisations. • Making sure Sheffield residents continue to get the best possible health services is the aim of the partnership between GPs, local hospitals, mental and community health teams, the City Council and voluntary organisations. • To ensure all Sheffield’s residents live longer and healthier lives, and are supported in their local community wherever possible by joined up, high quality, responsive, health and social care services which offer continuity of care, shared decision making, and a lifelong, personalised, preventative approach to health and wellbeing. The impact so far has been: • Early success with reducing some avoidable admissions of the frail elderly. • Improved mortality rates, reduced length of hospital stay and reduced readmission rates for frail elderly patients who need emergency care. • Streamlined discharge process for patients with complex needs. • Reduced number of patients with long lengths of stay. • Fast track process for patients going into long term care, though the Sheffield rates are higher than average. • Better specialist support at Sheffield Hospitals to support to care for patients with dementia. The plan for the next three years is: • Public communication and engagement programme developed. • Reference group made up of members of the public, patients, carers etc. being established. • Organisational development strategy being developed. • IT strategy being developed Steven will come back and give a further update at our October Members’ Meeting.
BEDROOM TAX http://www.sheffieldhomes.org.uk/myHome/ MoneyAndRent/WelfareBenefits.aspx
From April 2013, the Government have reduced the amount of Housing Benefit for tenants who have spare bedrooms in their homes. If this affects you then you will have to pay more rent each week as you will receive less Housing Benefit. This only affects people of working age, so if you are old enough to receive a state pension then there is no need to worry. If you are under occupying your home by one bedroom you will lose 14% or more of the amount of Housing Benefit you receive. If you have 2 or more spare bedrooms you will lose 25% or more of the Housing Benefit you receive. This reduction will be based on the eligible rent, rather than the amount of Housing Benefit awarded.

FITTER FEET http://www.ageuk.org.uk/health-wellbeing/ keeping-fit/fitter-feet/
We only get one pair of feet so it’s important to take good care of them. But many of us will develop some foot problems as we age, simply as a result of daily wear and tear. Anyone who has experienced foot pain knows only too well how debilitating it can be. Over time, it can become a significant health issue because, if we can’t walk comfortably, we’re less likely to get out and about and take part in the social activities or daily exercise that is vital for our health and wellbeing. 1.Get checked What’s more, people who suffer from diabetes or arthritis should check their feet regularly and ensure they attend check-ups as requested, as they are at risk of amputation if they don’t seek timely treatment. Fortunately, there’s lots we can do to protect our feet and most common problems can be treated successfully by a chiropodist or podiatrist - there’s no difference between the two, but most now prefer to call themselves podiatrists. ‘As we get older, an annual foot health check is as important as a sight or hearing test,’ says Mike O’Neill, Consultant Podiatrist and spokesperson for the College of Podiatry. ‘Conditions like diabetes or circulatory problems can all be picked up by looking at the feet and common problems like corns, cracked skin and ingrown toenails can be successfully treated.’ Unfortunately, though, unlike the free sight tests for over 60s, you will have to pay for an annual health check. 2. Get the right footwear On a day-to-day basis, there’s lots we can do ourselves. First and foremost, it’s important to wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes. ‘Many people wear slippers if their feet are hurting, but this can make things worse as slippers encourage you to shuffle rather than letting the joints work as they should,’ says Mike O’Neill. ‘A pair of running shoes is the best option as these provide a good amount of shock absorption and stability and also support the arch.’ Good nail care can also help to keep feet feeling comfortable. Unfortunately, many of us find it hard to clip our toenails properly, partly because it can be hard to reach but also because they become tougher with age. 3. Look after your nails However, nails that become too long can press against the end of the shoe and the constant pressure can cause soreness, infection or ulceration. Toenails that have been poorly cut can also become ingrown. ‘If you’re struggling to cut your own nails, ask a family member for help as hacking at them could do more harm than good,’ says Mike O’Neill.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Sheffield 50+ Focus Group Wednesday, 24 April, 10.30am to 12.30pm in Sheffield Town Hall. The subject will be how the benefits changes will affect the over 50s. Please telephone Julie or Jane on 2735426 to reserve your place. Membership forms available at the meeting. Life Acts Passages Theatre Group will be giving their first performance of Life Acts on 18 April at 7.30 in the University of Sheffield Theatre Workshop, Shearwood Rd, S10 2TD. The group is a Shared Learning Project (SLP) with Sheffield U3A and since October 2012 we have been exploring the performance of age, images of ageing and experiences of and attitudes to growing older. Life Acts is a short performance, through which we aim to share our practice-as-resarch and spark debate about notions of old age and the lived experience of ageing. This will be followed by a post show discussion. The performance is free but please email tickets@sheffield.ac.uk to reserve your seat.

10 TIPS TO BEAT INSOMNIA http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/insomnia/Pages/ insomniatips.aspx
Simple lifestyle changes can make a world of difference to your quality of sleep. Following these 10 tips from The Sleep Council will help you have a more restful night. 1. Keep regular hours Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time every day will programme your body to sleep better. Choose a time when you’re most likely to feel sleepy. 2. Create a restful sleeping environment Your bedroom should be kept for rest and sleep. Keep it as quiet and dark as possible. It should be neither too hot nor too cold. Temperature, lighting and noise should be controlled so that the bedroom environment helps you to fall (and stay) asleep. 3. Make sure that your bed is comfortable It’s difficult to get restful sleep on a mattress that’s too soft or too hard, or a bed that’s too small or old. If you have a pet that sleeps in the room with you, consider moving it somewhere else if it often makes noise in the night. 4. Exercise regularly Moderate exercise on a regular basis, such as swimming or walking, can help to relieve some of the tension built up over the day. But don’t do vigorous exercise too close to bedtime as it may keep you awake. 5. Less caffeine Cut down on stimulants such as caffeine in tea or coffee, especially in the evening. They interfere with the process of falling asleep, and they prevent deep sleep. The effects of caffeine can last a long time (up to 24 hours) so the chances of it affecting sleep are significant. Have a warm, milky drink or herbal tea instead. 6. Don’t over-indulge Too much food or alcohol, especially late at night, can interrupt your sleep patterns. Alcohol may help you to fall asleep initially, but it will disrupt your sleep later on in the night. 7. Don’t smoke It’s bad for sleep. Smokers take longer to fall asleep, they wake up more frequently, and they often have a more disrupted sleep. 8. Try to relax before going to bed Have a warm bath, listen to quiet music or do some gentle yoga to relax the mind and body. Your doctor may be able to recommend a helpful relaxation CD. 9. Write away your worries Deal with worries or a heavy workload by making lists of things to be tackled the next day. If you tend to lie in bed thinking about tomorrow’s tasks, set aside time before bedtime to review the day and make plans for the next day. The goal is to avoid doing these things when you’re in bed, trying to sleep. 10. Don’t worry in bed If you can’t sleep, don’t lie there worrying about it. Get up and do something you find relaxing until you feel sleepy again, then return to bed.

GRAND OPEN DAY Monday 15th April
Death and dying is often a taboo subject, with people afraid to discuss it. “I Did It My Way” encourages our clients, not to mourn a death, but celebrate a wonderful and varied life. After all, people have lived their lives very differently. A funeral is a very personal , special occasion. Nothing is too much trouble, and we don’t believe our clients should have to pay for ‘hidden extras’ or extortionate costs. We openly advertise our costs, and believe that our clients should pay whatever they would like to. We provide basic funerals from £1950, and wicker caskets and environmentally freindly cardboard caskets which can be beautifully decorated and personlised.
We are always happy to discuss your requirements with you.

MEDAL EXPERTS VISIT KILLAMARSH TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHURCH Saturday February 9th should be an ideal day for residents of Killamarsh & district to start spring cleaning for that is the day that the team of experts from The Medal Centre will be running a specialist Coin and Medal valuation day at St Giles Church hall, sheepcote road, Killamarsh, s21-1du from 9am to 5pm. Each of the specialist present are experts in their own chosen field and they will be on hand to give free verbal valuations on any inherited Medals and military items as well as coins and banknotes and most other small collectables Including scrap gold and broken jewellery in any form but particularly gold coins such as sovereigns and kruggerands or gold watches and watch chains. Please remember that any one of the experts will be able to make you an immediate on the spot cash offer for your unwanted items and they will be happy to offer the very best prices available. At the last event run by The Medal Centre.one local resident was absolutely thrilled to accept a four figure sum for her small tin box containing her late Uncles Medals for gallantry in the Boer War and WW1 along with a few assorted badges and a small selection of gold and silver coins. The lady said that not only was she astounded to discover how much her items were worth but the money could not have come at a better time due to the current financial situation and on top of all that she was delighted to be able to help her local Church. There has never been a better time to sell your inherited collectable items as, due to The Medal Centres vast client base, they are able to offer extremely good prices. It is also a good way to help your local community as The Medal Centre will be giving a donation to St. Giles church for every item they are able to purchase on the day. However if you cannot attend on the day one of the experts from The Medal Centre will be happy to call and see you at your convenience and they can be contacted on 01434 609794 or 07950 421704.

WE SAY FAREWELL TO A VALUED FRIEND & COLLEAGUE VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE
It is with great sorrow that the 1,000th edition of The Mercury Newspaper is tinged a bitter sweet occasion. Mr Stephen Thompson (Mr Mercury) passed away peacefully after a period of illness on Saturday last (6th April 2013). Stephen, as well as being a valued work colleague also became a very dear friend to many at The Mercury throughout the years. I firstly had the pleasure of meeting Stephen back in 1998 when I worked as the Promotions Manager for Yates’s Wine Lodges, setting up tours and promotions and of course Stephen was there, relentlessly trying to sell me advertising space in The Mercury;
which was pretty much in its infancy in those days. His sales pitch followed me through to my work with Peller Artistes and then to The Academy of Sound, music retailers; where he not only arranged my most successful advertising campaigns, but also became a friend. When I was invited to take over the paper in 2002, it was because Stephen was at the helm, in charge of advertising that I took the chance, secure in the knowledge that The Mercury had a dedicated and committed sales champion to ensure its continued development. It speaks volumes of the man that my personal phone and that of The Mercury’s has been ringing
endlessly with people wishing to offer their condolences. Stephen was a born salesman, focussed, targeted; but had a gifted rare commodity not found in sales people these days, humility and a genuine concern for the well being of his customers, hence, so many of his customers of old have also become friends. Stephen has worked tirelessly for The Mercury for 18 years. He oversaw the paper in its conception and its development, through good times and bad times, through its expansion and success as a weekly favourite to so many in the South Yorkshire area. So many staff, fellow advertising sales people, editors, owners and
directors owe the paper’s survival and continued success to Stephen’s belief, commitment, dedication and sheer hard work for the company, Rest in peace dear friend David Hayes (former owner) -----------------------------------------Everyone at The Mercury would like to offer their condolences to Stephen’s family and friends. He was a larger than life character that will be greatly missed by us all. Steve, for many years was the first person in the office making sure the heaters were on, the kettle was filled and everything was sorted for when the rest of us arrived. He had incredible commitment to work and was working right up till the close of play on Friday evening. As well as being one of the most gifted salesmen around he was also a lovable character who always brought a smile to everyone’s face, sometimes accidently. Full of life, dancing, singing, joking and coming out with some of the most inexplicable yet humourous sayings, he always made sure he was involved in whatever was happening in the office. Of course there were times where he lost his cool and made sure you knew what his views were but these moments were few and far between and he always made sure that by the end of the day everyone was friends. One of life’s true ‘One-offs,’ everybody at The Mercury owes a great gratitude to Steve and he will be sorely missed. Take Care Bud. Everyone at The Mercury.
John Stephen Thompson 1936 -2013 At the time of going to press no details have been finalised regarding Stephen’s Funeral. If you would like to be kept up to date with details please call the office on 0114 276 3633 and we will alert everybody once things are arranged.

RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
This April we’ve got a fabulous prize for one lucky fundraiser courtesy of Viking - an Xbox360 250GB Console with Kinect Sensor and a bundle of games! Get hands free and interactive with the Kinect Sensor and Just Dance 4 features more than 40 new tracks. To enter all you need to do is make a purchase through the easyfundraising site before the end of April. Each time you make a purchase you receive an entry into the draw so, twenty purchases means twenty chances to win! Plus we’ll give you TWO entries when you make any purchase from competition sponsor Viking. And tell your friends about easyfundraising to earn extra entries into the draw too. Or visit the easyfundraising site and take a look at the blog and enter the competition in a completely new way. Answer the multiple choice question correctly and you will earn another entry into the competition. So there’s plenty of ways to enter this months competition and you can quickly build up your entries as you take advantage of the 2000+ retailers available through the site. This months competition sponsors are Viking – suppliers of thousands of business products, from pens and pencils to office furniture and everything in between. Did you know Viking also sell a wide range of products for the home, including games consoles, games and accessories, home entertainment, cameras, DVD box sets and so much more. Remember that when you purchase through easyfundraising the cost you pay for your item is the same as it would be normally. The donation to Radio Nightingale comes from the retailer.
BIGGER BREAKFAST MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Well, if you’ve been listening closely for the last few days you will probably know that this is my final week hosting Magic AM Breakfast as it stands. Our Magic Word competition featuring Peter Stringfellow talking about growing up in Sheffield simply MUST be won. As I mentioned in last week’s Mercury, we’ve also got copies of Meatloaf’s re-issued Bat Out of Hell to hand out all through the day this week. Keep your radio on for lots of winning Meatloaf songs. I’ve certainly had 5 fantastic unforgettable years waking you up, playing the classic hits, giving away top notch prizes of all shapes and sizes, getting to know South Yorkshire and getting to know you. You may well have followed my own stories as well, from getting on stage with Dinnington Operatic Society through to buying and selling a house. We’ve chatted about days of old, friends and family, and the oddities of life. We may well have even crossed paths in person at the dozens and dozens of events Magic has staged. Really pleased to say breakfasts with Magic are indeed set to get ‘bigger’ as the headline reads. I’m pleased to be part of the team which will bring you a brand new show starting this coming Monday April 15th. I’ll be along with my good pal, Yorkshire lad born, bread and buttered Glenn Pinder. He’s recently become a Dad for the So easy, so why not? www. first time, so there will no doubt easyfundraising.org.uk/ be tails of sleepless nights, radionightingale nappies and of course lots and lots of fun we’d love you to get Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week involved with too. There’s also for the patients and staff of the all the early morning information Rotherham General Hospital on you’ll need and our familiar mix 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For of just great songs. more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk Twitter: @nightingale1350 Facebook: radionightingale Current volunteer vacancies: Football commentator Production assistant Fundraiser
Please make it a habit and join us for Magic’s much much bigger Breakfast. Trevor

Sheffield’s Owlerton Greyhound Stadium raced ahead to bag the top prize at a major national racing competition. Owlerton was crowned overall winner at the BAGS (Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service) Easter Eggstravaganza held at Monmore Green, in Wolverhampton. Taking on 15 Greyhound tracks from across the country, Sheffield-based trainers finished first in three out of six races at the inaugural inter-track event. First place finishes were celebrated by Owlerton’s Lisa Stephenson, with Vanjohn, Barrie Draper, with Ballymac Arkle, and Elaine Parker, who won top spot with Hather Sherlock before claiming second place with Crimpos Rocky. Owlerton’s Norman Melbourne also took second place with Maverick Flame to help the Stadium earn a combined points total of 21, the overall competition title and £10,000 in prize money, which will be paid out at the Stadium during April. Each winning trainer also received prize money of £1,000 for first place, £500 for second and £200 for third. Owlerton’s trainers were awarded an additional £6,000 for winning the most points overall. John Gilburn, managing director of Hillsboroughbased Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, who supported the trainers at the event, said: “Our trainers were taking on tracks from as far south as Hove and as far north as Newcastle so to win three races and the overall title is a fantastic achievement. “It was the first time this competition has taken place and our success demonstrates the quality of our trainers and the strength and speed of our greyhounds in what was a tough field. “We got off to a great start with Vanjohn who put in a really determined effort to win over 480m and it proved to be a great start to a winning day for the Owlerton team.” The runner up prize at the BAGS Easter Eggstravaganza was awarded to Hove with 13 points and third place was a draw between Belle Vue, Sittingbourne and Swindon. For more information about visiting Owlerton Greyhound Stadium visit www.owlertonstadium. co.uk.

It’s official…the British festival season has well and truly kicked off (we’ve already been to three…can you beat that yet?) with both full weekenders and single day events cropping up all over the UK. Shining the beacon for the best 2013 one day line-up festival, Hit The Deck based in both Bristol and Nottingham is a certified must for this year…and tickets are still available…you’re in luck! Spread across the best live music venues in both Bristol and Nottingham, Hit The Deck South is to be ran on 20th April with Hit The Deck North landing in on the following day. Each within exceptionally close proximity to each other, the festival’s stages act as a platform for bands both from the UK and beyond, a true example to highlight the nature of this year’s line-up. So, to the headliners. Easily one of the most talked about and hard working bands to emerge out of the last few years, Don Broco are all about putting on memorable live shows. We’re pretty sure now you all know about their infamous dance routine “The Walk,” so polish up your moves and prepare to throw some shapes throughout their anticipated set. We Are The Ocean are second headliners to Hit The Deck, a band no strangers to the world’s largest platforms of rock. Having performed throughout the globe alongside smashing Download 2012 last year, expect big from a band who sure as hell know how to deliver to the max. We Are The In Crowd, the US’s most recent pop punk sensation take to HTD 2013, armed with a repertoire of catchy hits to get audiences on their feet alongside Never Shout Never, the new age US trio, who with six EP’s and two albums now under their belt are reaching the stars with their emotive live atmosphere. A massive recommendation from us would be to check out Devil Sold His Soul. This post hardcore / electrocore power house may only be performing the Northern leg of Hit The Deck, however with their brand new album “Empire Of Light” out now, a sterling follow up to their 2010 belter “Blessed and Cursed,” we seriously suggest you give these a watch. Also performing Hit The Deck 2013 and Mercury recommendations include: Scotland’s Bleed From Within, hardcore pack Heart Of a Coward alongside Attack Attack (us), Sheffield’s Rolo Tomassi, Sonic Boom Six and Brighton’s James Cleaver Quintet. Check out www.hitthedeckfestival.com or alttickets.co.uk to purchase you ticket to the vent of the summer.

BRING ME THE HORIZON LEEDS COCKPIT 02/04/13
REVIEW Words by KT Evans
They´re back…after almost two// years speculation they may never return, whether they would ever create a fourth record or if they would simply implode into nothing more than hardcore´s most controversial yet wasted British band, Bring Me The Horizon have well and truly shoved two fingers up to their critics returning with absolute belter “Sempiternal.” Allowing fans who purchased a delux version of album number four an exclusive live show, the steel city five piece well and truly ripped Leeds Cockpit a new arsehole with their explosive performance on 2nd April. Bigger and bolder with every showcase they deliver, the only support of the night came in the form of London´s metalcore clan Feed The Rhino. Being an almost impossible task to think of a better group to wind the Mcjeebies out of the audience, Lee Tobin not only gets that little bit more ferocious with every set but has passion and determination to match. Closing with ridiculously brutal hit “The Butcher,” we were all a tad disappointed when their half hour long set ended…that is, of course, until Oli Sykes appeared. Whether you love him or absolutly hate the Northern buggers guts, its exceptionally hard to dispute Oli Sykes´s charisma and enthusiasm whilst doing what he does best. Opening with debut single off the most anticipated album of the year, “Shadow Moses” delves straight into the very essence of record number four. Clearly heavily influenced by ex Worship member and new addition to the band Jordan Fish, the unmistakeable synthesised undertones and intricately woven string sections not only deliver on a colossal scale through the stereo, but is also now a major aspect of Bring Me The Horizon´s live show. The hour long set was littered with both old and new material, however with an occasion of this sort, “Sempiternal” tracks went down with greatest effect. “Empire” has as much bite as it does bone tingling lyrics, alongside “And The Snakes Start To Sing” which is the truest personification of the brand new BMTH. With an effective culmination of vocal screams and cleans, something which has made its debut appearance on Sempiternal, its quite ironic how much versatility a brand new member can add to the group after criticisms the band are yet another generic hardcore pack…how could their critics be so absurdly incorrect? “Sleepwalking” indicates the progression Oli Sykes and co have travelled since “There Is a Hell…” back in 2011, easily the highlight of the set and one which will safe guard BMTH as the most talked about band of 2013. Closing with “Antivist,” a track which would easily make your Mother weep in horror, if the new album name is anything to go by…Bring Me The Horizon, here´s to the sempiternal future. A brand new singing group for ages 10 to 18 performing many classic rock and pop songs. We promise that RockFace is all about having fun and singing the type of songs young people want to sing! Every Monday 5:15pm to 6:45pm. Only £2 a session. Burton Street Foundation, 57 Burton Street, Hillsborough, Sheffield S6 2HH Burton Street Foundation is a busy and extremely well run set up and is very easy to get to on the Supertram. angler’s corner by Clint Walker
Although the snow has now albeit disappeared, water temperatures are still well below what they should be and it’s still not as warm as it should be, the first shoots of Spring are just about beginning to poke through and there is hope of better weather.....so I hope you are raring to get back out on the banks and get fishing?! I’ve been in Cheshire this week at another of my favourite venues, Gawsworth Fisheries near Congleton. Set in rolling Cheshire farmland, Gawsworth has six different pools to try and has some cracking fish including crucians, tench and catfish. I chose to target Wood Pool, regarded as the specimen lake, but I wasn’t after carp; I wanted to get into the shoals of bream to try an exciting new bait soon to be released by my sponsor Marukyu. Obviously I can’t yet divulge the exact contents or form of the bait, but suffice to say I’ve had up to a dozen fish in trials on a single piece of it, and it isn’t artificial!! My tactics so far this year have usually comprised mixing two groundbaits, adding a bit of krill powder (what a discovery by the way!) and a glug of liquid. I don’t use much, so what I do use has to be effective and I rarely make up more than one kilo of bait for an eight hour session. A simple cage feeder set up with a hook length of around eighteen inches to a size 16 hook and I’m away! One of the most important aspects of feeder fishing is accuracy, so I always fish ‘clipped up’; if you haven’t tried it, you really should consider giving it a go as it can improve catch rates dramatically. At Gawsworth, the fishing gods were with me as I selected a likely peg and cast out; before I’d had the opportunity to tighten up my line, the ‘tip slowly bent around as a bream picked up the bait. A short time later, a chunky 3lb fish lay in my net and I cast back out to the same spot only for the same thing to happen again! Another fish of around 3lbs! Surely this couldn’t continue? Well it did; for almost two hours a stream of fish were landed, the occasional one missed, a couple bumped as net slowly filled....then I hit something much bigger. With a hair rigged bait, the chances of a savage take are increased hugely and I’m just glad I was watching my rod as it literally bounced off the rest and headed for the water! As I snatched it up, the fish kited away to my left into open water with a dogged display of head shaking tenacity as I

hung on! In truth, I wasn’t confident that my 6lbs main line and 3lbs hook length would hold up and so it proved to be the case as the fish slapped the surface and was gone.....but it wasn’t the line which had broken; my size 16 hook had been almost completely straightened out! Carp or cat? The water was a little too cold for cats, so I’m guessing one of the bigger residents took a fancy to the new bait and smashed me up! So what did I end up with? I had a great net of quality bream, a bonus double figure carp and sunburn! Things are picking up, so get out there and get fishing!

racing form by Timelord
It’s a fairly low key weekend this time as the TV racing has four fairly difficult handicaps to solve from Doncaster and Kempton, along with a couple of Listed races and a Conditions Stakes. There are seven races scheduled for Channel 4, four from Kempton on the All Weather track and three from Doncaster on turf. The remaining meetings are at Stratford and Uttoxeter. Doncaster: 2.20 Bet365 Doncaster Mile Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m: This looks a very closely knit affair with most of the 15 contestants being within a point or two of each other on my ratings. There are some making seasonal re-appearances and a few returning from longish breaks. This complicates things considerably as much has to be taken on trust. After some deliberation I have decided to take a chance that Michael Bell will have Sovereign Debt ready for this race. If he doesn’t turn out then the next best could be Highland Knight followed by Stand My Ground. 2.55 Bet365.com Handicap, 4yo+, 0-90, 1m 4f: Mark Johnston’s Fennell Bay gets the nod to resume where he left off on turf last term, after a pipe-opener on the all weather last month. Merchant of Dubai is feared most followed by Suegioo, Man of Plenty and The Lock Master. 3.30 Bet365 Handicap, 4yo+, 0-110, 6f: After Thunderball again showed his liking for this track a couple of weeks ago he has to be the selection. However this looks a bit harder than last time and he will no doubt not get his own way too easily. Hamza is most feared, followed by: Shropshire; Jack Dexter; Spinatrix; and Duke of Firenze. Of the rest respect is also accorded to: Hitchens; Our Jonathan, King of Jazz and Lexi’s Hero. All in all this is a tough one to call and it is only sentiment that sways it in favour of the selection. Kempton: 2.05 Betfred Mobile Lotto Handicap, 4yo+, 0-105, 7f: This is another viciously competitive affair where a pin may be needed to pick the winner. I have most of them rated to be within a point or two of each other so the selection is made with minimal confidence. After due deliberation I have opted for Amadeus Wolfe Tone based on his last time out performance on this surface where he ran on well to snatch second to Capone over six furlongs. The extra furlong looks sure to help this time. Monsieur Chevalier, Head of Steam and Docofthebay are the three I fear most although there are another six or seven that also ran fast times last time out.

3.50 Betfred Goals Galore Handicap, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m: James Toller’s Loving Spirit gets the vote to score in this contest. Atlantis Crossing, George Guru, Mister Music, Solar Deity and Cruiser are my idea of those that are likely to provide the sternest opposition to the selection. Selection Summary: I have given one selection a race for all four UK meetings. For reserves in the event of non runners in the TV races please see above. Doncaster: 1.50 Beau Nash 2.20 Sovereign Debt 2.55 Fennell Bay 3.30 Thunderball 4.05 Hillview Boy 4.40 Lewisham 5.15 Foreign Rhythm Kempton: 1.35 Lawman’s Lady 2.05 Amadeus Wolfe Tone 2.40 Code of Honor 3.15 Switcher 3.50 Loving Spirit 4.25 Concise 5.00 New Youmzain Stratford: 1.55 St Ignatius 2.30 Life of a Luso 3.05 Helium 3.40 Ruler of All 4.15 County Zen 4.50 Peak Seasons 5.25 Simply A Legend Uttoxeter: 1.40 Lower Hope Dandy 2.10 Witness In Court 2.45 Feeling 3.20 Sean Airgead 3.55 Mohi Rahrere 4.30 Arctic Wings 5.05 Shake The Barley 5.40 Definitely Glad. Good Luck!
GOLF TOURS
2.40 Betfred treble Odds on Lucky 15s Conditions Stakes, 3yo, 1m: Henry Candy’s Code of Honor gets a relatively confident nod to follow up his two victories on turf last term. He may have most to worry about from Yarroom and Hiddon Coin although others that ran respectably on their latest runs were: Emell; Glean; Ashamaaly; Thistleandtworoses; Professor; and One Word More. 3.15 Betfred Mobile Sports Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m: Lily’s Angel is unbeaten on this surface and is not lightly passed over. However one that appeals marginally more on these terms is David O’Meara’s Switcher whose second to Intense Pink at Ascot last term may be good enough to see him through. That day he beat Sentaril by just over a length at level weights. Most feared

is Jeremy Noseda’s Burke’s Rock whose head second to Sentaril here last November (also at level weights) also puts him right in the firing line. In the Ascot Intense Pink race Radio Gaga and I’m So Glad were not too far away and also have decent chances.

Millers & Rovers News 2012-13
TEN MEN MILLERS SUFFER DEFEAT A former Miller came back to haunt his old club for the second consecutive game as Morecambe beat ten man Rotherham. Kevin Ellison popped up with a last-minute winner to clinch victory for the Shrimps after Rotherham captain Johnny Mullins had earlier been sent-off for a last ditch challenge. Robbie Threlfall had put the hosts ahead in the second half with a fine free-kick before Alex Revell responded through a deflected effort. Millers boss Steve Evans made four changes from the side that lost to Gillingham on Easter Monday with Mark Bradley, Michael O’Connor, Kieran Agard and Ben Pringle coming in at the expense of Claude Davis, David Noble, Daniel Kearns and top goalscorer Daniel Nardiello. Rotherham started on the front foot and won their first corner of the game inside the opening two minutes but Pringle’s cross was comfortably dealt with by Barry Roche and his defence. Rotherham continued their early dominance and an early appeal for a penalty was turned down by the referee. Michael O’Connor made a surging run into the 18-yard box and after he played the ball through to Kieran Agard, the striker went down under pressure. The Millers had a glorious chance to take the lead after 14 minutes. O’Connor robbed possession deep inside the Morecambe half but his through ball was cut out as Kari Arnason was set to strike from 16 yards. Pringle had an opportunity to make the breakthrough midway through the first-half but after the ball had been worked to him on the corner of the six-yard box, his shot was blocked as it headed towards the bottom corner. Evans’ side were in complete control and Lionel Ainsworth saw his effort from the edge-of-the-box go just wide of Barry Roche’s left-hand post, before a succession of corners failed to conjure up a goal. Jack Redshaw almost made the visitors pay for not taking their chances. The striker beat the offside trap before cutting back onto his favoured right foot and forcing Scott Shearer into a fingertip save.
Ainsworth was causing plenty of problems down the right but he was finding it difficult to pick out either Revell or Agard who were waiting in the middle. The Millers started the second half in the same manner as they finished the first and Revell tested Roche’s handling skills with an effort from just outside the penalty area. With 50 minutes on the clock, Rotherham had the best chance of the game. The ball was played over the top for Agard to chase, but after shrugging off the challenge of the defender he lifted his effort over from 10 yards. Seconds later he was made to pay. Jim Bentley’s side won a free-kick just outside the penalty area and Robbie Threlfall strode up to curl his shot round the wall and into the bottom corner. The Millers responded and were back on level terms just three minutes later after a big slice of good fortune. Ainsworth unleashed a shot from 25-yards that seemed to be heading wide until it took a deflection off Revell and nestled in the corner of the net. The game was starting to become stretched and a simple ball over the top caused mayhem in the Rotherham defence. Johnny Mullis dragged back Redshaw as he bore down on goal and was sentoff by the referee for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Threlfall and Alessandra both had good opportunities to make Morecambe’s man advantage count but it was Ellison who got the winner on 90 minutes. He looped his header into the top corner, leaving Shearer with no chance. Attendance: 2,197 (830) Morecambe: Roche, Threlfall, Haining (c), Wright, Ellison, McCready, Drummond, Fleming, McDonald, Parrish, Redshaw. Subs: Arestidou, Alessandra, Williams, Burrow, Mwasile, Doyle, Holroyd. Rotherham United: Shearer, Bradley, Mullins (c), Morgan, Skarz, Ainsworth, O’Connor, Arnason, Agard, Pringle, Revell. Subs: Warrington, Tonge, Odejayi, Noble, Kearns, Nardiello.
ROVERS GO A STEP CLOSER A sunny afternoon, with a cold breeze made ideal conditions for playing football, although the pitch may dictate otherwise. The Rovers were unchanged whilst Tranmere made just the one change, Andy Robinson replacing the injured Mamady Sidibe. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half. Tranmere set the ball rolling but the Rovers were soon on the ball. They won a corner after five minutes, with the ball coming out of the Tranmere defence to Griffin. His high ball back to the middle was met with a Jones header but Fon Williams saved. The Rovers continued to have the better of the possession so that it was the 11th minute before the visitors got a sniff at the Rovers goal when a high cross from Holmes on the Tranmere right was headed over the bar by Bakayogo at the far post. At the other end Cotterill had a shot a shot on target blocked but they eventually won a corner. Five minutes on and some good play between Coppinger and Bennett gave the latter a shot at goal but it was deflected for a corner, which was put out for another corner. The game evened out after twenty minutes or so. Cotterill put wide from 20yards and the visitors pushed the Rovers back on to defence. Past the half hour and a corner to Tranmere was cleared. Minutes later a good link-up on the Rovers left between Coppinger, Brown and Furman gave Furman a crack at goal but he put wide. Play was concentrated in midfield as time ran down to the break. Tranmere were awarded a free kick near the corner flag on their left in the 44th minute but a glancing header put it wide of the far post. Then a good build-up by the Rovers led to Coppinger feeding Cotterill but his twenty-five yarder was just wide of a post. The Rovers got the second half underway and won a corner but nothing came from it. Five minutes in and Akpa Akpro received on the Tranmere left

County Senior League League Cup Semi-Final Finally after being previously been postponed due to bad weather; the League Cup Semi-Final between High Green Villa and Swallownest Miners Welfare went ahead last Thursday. High Green Villa took the tie 2-1 thanks to goals from Ben Compai and Dominic Beever. High Green will now face Wombwell Main in the final on Thursday 18th April at Sandy Lane, Worksop (kick-off 7.30pm). Premier Division Saturday proved to be a pivotal day in the race for the Premier Division title, with six of the top seven playing each other. Firstly, Shaw Lane Aqua Force were 3-1 away winners over Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park. The win leaves Aqua Force three points clear of second place with just seven games remaining. Penistone Church sit on second after the defeated Houghton Main 2-0 at Middlecliffe Lane. The goals for Penistone came from likely sources in the form of Alvin Riley and Mark Crossfield. Houghton Main drop to fifth. A point behind in third place lie Handsworth. They were the big winners of the weekend, as a hat-trick from 20 year old Luke Broadbent helped them to a 6-0 home win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Handworth were in need of a good win to keep them in the race, following a 1-0 loss midweek to Ecclesfield Red Rose. Wombwell Main were held to a 1-1 draw at home High Green Villa. The game provides a dress rehearsal of the cup final, which will take place later this month. Kinsley Boys made it three games undefeated with their second successive 3-0 home win. This time the opposition were South Kirkby Colliery, with the goals coming from Josh Stacy, Callum Stapleton and a penalty from Mark Lafferty. A brace from David Sills helped Swallownest Miners Welfare to an exciting 3-2 win over Ecclesfield Red Rose at the Civil Service Ground. Davy FC succumbed to their seventh straight league defeat, as they were beaten 4-1 at home by Everest FC. Following the loss, Davy slipped to third-from-the-bottom in the table. Division One All the top three in Division One won this weekend. Firstly, leaders Athersley Recreation were 3-1 over Sheffield Bankers at Davy Sports Club. Not to be outdone, second placed Oughtibridge were also 3-1 winners over Bramley Sunnyside Juniors thanks to goals from Justin Westoby, Jack Ridge and Adam Wood. Oughtibridge remain four points off the lead
and from the edge of the penalty area fired wide of the near post. In the 53rd minute a free kick on the halfway line close to the Rovers right touchline was placed by Cotterill to the far post where Jones headed wide. Midfield play ensued until the 63rd minute when the Rovers were awarded a free kick on the left touchline near the halfway line. Cotterill placed this into the Tranmere penalty area where the ball was knocked down and JONES slammed it into the net from close range. Tranmere tried to hit back and forced a corner but it was cleared easily. The two teams then proceeded to take turns at taking corners over the next ten minutes as both sides attacked, the Rovers to clinch the win and Tranmere to get something from the game. The last corner of all, in the 93rd minute, was cleared and the whistle blew for full time. It has been an up and down week for Thorncliffe. Midweek they were beaten 4-0 at home by Penistone Church Reserves. But they managed to follow that up on Saturday a 5-3 home win over Caribbean Sports. Wickersley ended a run of three straight league losses with a 1-1 draw at home to Penistone Church Reserves. SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 ONE ALL AT WALSALL SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Substitute Chris Porter scrambled the ball home from close range to earn the Blades a point at Walsall on Saturday. It put a dampener on Walsall’s 125th birthday celebrations at the Banks’s Stadium. But it kept United’s promotions aspirations alive, despite a poor first half showing. Boss Wilson was forced into a couple of changes to his starting line-up due to McMahon’s suspension and Poleon returning to Leeds. Higginbotham and Murphy were recalled, whilst Hill and Kitson, who suffered injuries in the previous game, were fit to continue. Westlake remained a substitute at his former club and on a predominantly young bench, he was joined by Whitehouse and Kennedy. The starting positions of a number of players were interesting. Hill began at
VITAL CHANGES SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk Danny Wilson was delighted to see his two substitutions change the game at Walsall on Saturday. After a lacklustre first-half showing at the Banks’s Stadium, Wilson introduced Chris Porter in place of Dave Kitson at the start of the second half and on the hour Callum McFadzean replaced Barry Robson. The Blades boss reserved special praise for the duo after Porter’s scrambled effort rescued a point to keep the Blades in the
right full back, with Higginbotham on the left, whilst further forward Robson and Kitson were central and Forte was on the left. It was quickly apparent that the pitch was bobbly and bouncy, with both sides taking time to adjust. Hill sniffed out Paterson and Higginbotham and Doyle both stopped crosses early on, at the expense of corners, from one of which Paterson fired over. Robson’s intelligent pass almost put Murphy clear but Taylor, a former Blades defender, sniffed out the danger, whilst for the home side there were a number of blocks and Chambers shot over. Higginbotham’s header from a Robson free-kick on 30 minutes was over but Walsall were creating the most problems. Hill had to deflect away Paterson’s shot after a right-wing cross, whilst Baxendale and Mantom also had shots which failed to find the target. It was difficult to argue against the home side being the more dominant force and they went close on 42 minutes when Brandy capitalised on Higginbotham’s mis-placed pass and shot across goal and just wide - moments before the deadlock was broken. Walsall were patient in another build up and Baxendale found space on the right to cross, which saw
WESTCARR hold off Maguire before shooting under Long on the turn. Porter was introduced for Kitson at the start of the second period and was quickly in the action, involved in the build up from which McDonald fired over a minute after the restart. Walsall hit back with two good chances, which both fell to Brandy in a matter of minutes - he first shot wide after finding himself in the clear and then his half-volley missed the target. United were showing more intent than in the first half and the home side were on the back foot following a number of chances. Porter took the ball down but his shot on the turn was wide, Murphy’s effort was blocked and Hill was just wide with a long-ranger. The Blades almost went two behind on the hour when McDonald gave away possession but Long was quickly off his line to snuff out Brandy, whilst the introduction of McFadzean seconds later was instrumental as he won a free-kick in a dangerous position with his first run. Higginbotham’s blast was blocked but in the aftermath Collins found McDonald, who cut in on to his left, saw his shot hit a post and the back of the goalkeeper before PORTER scrambled the ball over the line from a yard. Long again saved from Brandy before
hunt for a top two finish. He commented: “The manner of how we conceded typified our first half display, we weren’t tight enough, we let the space be an enemy to us and we just looked totally out of it. “The substitutes totally changed the game and I am particularly delighted for Chris (Porter), he showed what he has in his locker. Callum (McFadzean) has a direct style that puts the opposition on the back foot; he can have a big role to play in the weeks ahead.” “The loan move did have an impact on Chris, the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere and every player has to give every drop of blood and sweat to get Sheffield United back to the Championship.”

the Blades went on the attack again, this time Porter’s cross found Forte but his shot on the turn was inches wide. Walsall weathered the Blades storm and there was nervousness from all sides of the Banks’s Stadium as the game entered the final ten minutes. Porter’s half-volley was pushed around a post by Johnstone and the Saddlers scrambled away a Murphy cross. As three minutes of injury-time approached, Hill picked up United’s only booking and another Porter effort was blocked before the final whistle signalled spoils shared. Walsall: Johnstone, Butler, Chambers, Paterson, Brandy (Sawyers 90), Purkiss, Downing, Baxendale (Hemmings 84), Taylor (Benning 57), Mantom, Westcarr. Unused: Holden, Featherstone, Bowerman, Roberts. Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 JOHNSON LEADS OWLS TO VICTORY SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Two goals from star man Jermaine Johnson and a Leroy Lita penalty earned a precious three points for Wednesday in a scintillating 3-2 win over Blackburn at Hillsborough. Jordan Rhodes put the visitors in the lead with a composed penalty, but it was quickly cancelled out by Jermaine Johnson’s strike after his tidy footwork in the box. Lita gave the hosts the lead after he sent keeper Grzegorz Sandomierksi the wrong way from the spot, but Rovers skipper Scott Dann headed the Lancashire side
back level after the break. Then the impressive Jermaine Johnson got his second of the game with a stunning right-footed finish from range to earn Wednesday a vital win. The Owls approached this basement battle level on points with 19th-placed Blackburn, who went into the contest with a superior goal difference of -6 to the Owls’ -10. The home side were kept on their toes in the early stages as Blackburn had the lion’s share of possession, and the Ewood Park outfit duly earned their reward on 12 minutes. Defensive confusion after the Owls failed to clear their lines led to Chris Kirkland conceding a penalty when he came off his line and collided with David Dunn, and talisman Rhodes coolly sent Kirkland the wrong way from the spot to put Rovers one up. However, the hosts were quick to pick themselves up, and Jermaine Johnson’s driving runs paid dividends when he expertly despatched an equaliser into the bottom corner after tidy footwork on the
edge of the Blackburn box on 20 minutes. The frontman was industrious in the build-up to the goal, offering pace and drive to the Wednesday attack. He was unlucky not to put Wednesday in front four minutes later after turning Rovers defender Dann, but the Jamaican was denied by Sandomierski from an angle. The momentum had shifted in the Owls’ favour ad their morale was noticeably boosted after the equaliser. Wedneday were then awarded a penalty when Reda Johnson was pulled down by Josh Morris following a back post cross. Lita matched the composure shown by Rhodes to place the ball in the top corner to give the Owls the lead. Lita could have put the home side two up on the stroke of half time, but Sandomierski pulled off a superb reflex save after the frontman was played in by strike partner Jermaine Johnson’s neat flick. The second half saw the tempo upped, with challenges flying in, and both sides conceding free kicks in dangerous positions. Dann went close early on in the half, Kirkland doing well to smother the defender’s close-range header from an in-swinging free kick. But Dann’s aerial threat got its just desserts when he found space to nod in substitute Josh King’s excellent deep cross on 70 minutes. In a tight game, a moment of quality decided matters with 13 minutes to go, and Jermaine Johnson provided it with an unstoppable low drive from 25 yards to blast the Owls back in front and set the game up for a tense finish. Jeremy Helan’s bursting run from deep was unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal moments later but he fired over from inside the box. The hosts demonstrated their character and resilience to hang on against a Blackburn side who pressed the Owls to the end of a hard fought contest.

Dave Jones praised his battle weary troops following the crucial win over Blackburn on Saturday. A Jermaine Johnson brace and Leroy Lita penalty edged Rovers out by the odd goal in five to seal victory and haul the Owls further from the relegation trapdoor. And despite conceding twice, the manager was insistent that today was all about the positives. He said: “Yes, we’ve conceded two goals and made it hard for ourselves, but I have nothing but praise for the players today. “They’ve had a hard schedule over the Easter period with two games in three days and another tough one today. “So there’s plenty of bumps and bruises but they can feel proud of themselves tonight because we have won a very important game and continued our run. “To be fair, the lads have been outstanding since we beat Barnsley at Oakwell and started the run. “We’ll be back in tomorrow, we’ll assess where we are, and prepare for the trip to Millwall. “The most important game is the next one.” Jones picked out match-winner Jermaine Johnson, whose two strikes helped Wednesday open a three-point lead on the drop zone. He added: “On his day, he does what we saw today, and credit to him because he was outstanding. “He’s using his experience well and he can be a real threat in that position up front “We lost Gary Madine with a hamstring injury on Friday so we had a decision to make – either play Stevie Howard up there with Leroy Lita or go with JJ. “Stevie started against Bristol City on Monday, he’s been out of this division for a season, and his calves were screaming after the game. “So we knew he would figure at some point today and we went with JJ. “It’s nice when important decisions pay off.”
