Copley’s Column
There are times when I am immensely proud to be British, but regrettably there are also occasions when I am deeply ashamed. Two incidents this week have really made my blood boil. Firstly, there is the mindless uneducated morons who celebrate the death of the greatest politician and Prime Minister of my lifetime, Baroness Margaret Thatcher. These cretins, totally politically ignorant, who would keep loss making enterprises going until they are totally bankrupt to keep people in work are beyond belief. Politics apart, they are unable to separate Margaret Thatcher, the loving mother and grandmother from Margaret Thatcher the politician. It may well be that I may lose a few ‘friends’ over this, but quite frankly, I could not care less. People who celebrate the misery of others have no place in my life. The second disgraceful incident occurred at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening, when the eyes of the world were on the F.A.Cup semifinal between Wigan Athletic and Millwall. This spectacle was ruined by Millwall’s so called fans, no strangers to crowd violence, unable to be combatant with the opposing supporters, had a fight amongst themselves, in front of television audiences all over the world. I wonder what sort of impression they think will be formed by the football fans worldwide, when they witness this. Thankfully, there will be no repeat performance at the cup final as Wigan won the game thankfully. I am happy to report that my joy was compounded by a sizeable wager on Wigan. I attended the under eleven and under twelves rugby union finals on Sunday morning at Nottingham Corsairs ground which is overlooked by the Brian Clough Stand at the ground of Nottingham Forest. This competition is for teams from Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. Needless to say, there was no crowd violence here, as proud parents cheered on their children, including local vocalist Yolande Potgieter, whose son Conner, pictured, is a member of Chesterfield Panther’s under twelves’ who are captained by Jack Bromley, son of my girlfriend Caron. I am proud to report that the Shield was won by the Panthers in a final where our Jack scored two tries. My home town of Dronfield won the under twelves’ cup making it a great local
double. Sheffield United controversially sacked manager Danny Wilson after a recent bad run of form and replaced him with former player and youth coach Chris Morgan, a man with no managerial experience. This had a dramatic effect as the home goal drought ended against fellow promotion hopefuls Swindon Town, getting the home fans behind the team for the first time in weeks. The Blades are in total control in their destiny with regard to promotion and I wish them the best of luck. The Owls lost a closely contested game against Leeds, but thankfully, most of the teams below them in the league also lost and they now look likely to avoid relegation. On Friday evening, my party of fourteen attended the Mercury 1,000th edition party at Crookes club, and what a fantastic time we all had. The entertainment was second to none. After due deference to our departed long serving employee, Stephen Thompson, was shown by a round of applause, the show opened with top veteran comedian, my close friend Bobby Dennis, who was very funny. He was followed on stage by a local singer, Brook, who has a very good voice and concluded by a sterling performance from the Gutterband, who had the audience dancing from the first minute they appeared. Finally, I should like to pay tribute to my friend and next door neighbour, Ron Alderson, an avid reader of this column, who sadly passed away this week after a short illness. I shall really miss our chats about football, and my sincere condolences go out to his widow, Pat, and all the family. God Bless Ron, I shall really miss you pal.

BOXING SHOWCASE AT THE ARENA
Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama will be crossing the Atlantic to take on Harlesden’s 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Audley ‘A-Force’ Harrison (31-6, 23 KO’s) in the co-featured fight that will headline a thrilling undercard on “The Return of the King: Khan vs. Diaz” bill, live on BoxNation, at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Saturday 27 April. Tickets priced at £300, £200, £125, £75 and £50 (subject to booking fee) are on sale now. Wilder, a rising star on the American heavyweight scene, has shown his phenomenal punching prowess by blasting his way past all of his opponents. The knockout king now steps into the ring against a respected veteran in Harrison who harbours his own dreams of reaching the top and fulfilling his potential. The pair will clash in a 12-round heavyweight showdown with the victor propelling themselves into world title contention. ”There’s nothing like the day before, the morning of and night after you’ve claimed VICTORY,” said Wilder. “The emotion, the excitement and adrenaline rush that I have is ready to explode out of me. I’m a starving lion that’s ready to eat. On April 27 in Sheffield, England my next meal will be served; on the menu: Audley Harrison…Bon appetite. For the many fans in England, Deontay ‘Bronze Bomber’ Wilder is coming. You’ve been waiting for this moment and now it’s here. I can’t wait to show you guys why I am the light and the way for this dark division.” “Deontay is a fast, dangerous puncher, but he has not been tested as a pro,” said Harrison. “I have lot of respect for him, so it’s not personal, but this is the door I must walk through. Lose and it’s over, win and I’m in the top ten for sure, eligible to challenge for the world title. Biggest risk, for the biggest reward. It can’t get any better than that.” Also featured on the undercard will be former Unified Lightweight World Champion Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (36-10-1, 26 KO’s) of Jacksonville, Florida who takes on the exciting undefeated Manchester prospect Terry “Turbo” Flannigan (19-0, 5 KO’s) in a 10-round lightweight bout. British fight fans will also be able to enjoy a simmering local rivalry with a Lancashire-Yorkshire battle set as former British Champion Gary “Five Star” Sykes (23-3, 5 KO’s) puts his English superfeatherweight crown on the line against Jon “2 Smokes” Kays (16-2-1, 4 KO’s) in a 10-round clash. No love has been lost between the duo and the April 27 card is all set for fireworks when they go headto-head. “John Kays is a good fighter so I will need to be at my best,” said Sykes. “I know what to expect, but I’m confident and believe that my experience is going to help me. I’m coming off of a good winning streak and hope to put myself back into the mix for a British title shot by winning. I’m focused and am ready for this fight. I’m not giving up my English title to anyone.” Also appearing on the show will be 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist Anthony Ogogo of Lowestoft making his professional debut against Kieron Gray (5-13-1, 1 KO) of Telford in a six round middleweight fight and the younger brother of Amir Khan, Haroon Khan making his professional debut against an opponent to be determined in a four-round super flyweight fight. “The Return of the King: Khan vs. Diaz” is a 12 round 143 pound catch-weight bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Khan Promotions and sponsored by JD Sport and Maxi Muscle. Tickets priced at £300, £200, £125, £75 and £50 (subject to booking fee) are on sale at now, in person at the Motorpoint Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656, or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
I was standing outside the pub when a woman walked over to me. “Am I supposed to meet you here? I’m from ‘match.com’.” she said. “That’s bloody amazing.” I replied, pulling out my cigarettes. “I’ve just lost my lighter.” ------------------------------------------------------I just told my mate that my wife gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, and that my wife allowed me to name both of them. “Congratulations mate,” He said, “What name have you given to your boy?” “Mason.” I said “That’s a smart name mate, what about your little girl?” He asked “Madaughter.” I replied. ------------------------------------------------------I’m learning to play the piano. I must be improving because the neighbours have smashed all my windows just so they can hear me better. ------------------------------------------------------What do you call a round, yellow dog? Melancholy. ------------------------------------------------------Apparently the word ‘shark’ was coined in 1549 when English sailor, William Michael Griffen saw a great-white swimming towards him and in sheer panic tried to scream three different swear words at the same time.

Below are descriptions of a number of Tarot cards:
Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Tarot Tales - Minor Arcana The Minor Arcana are the 56 suit cards of the 78-card deck of Tarot cards. The Minor Arcana consists of four suits with 14 cards each. By tradition each of the four suits (Wand, Cup, Sword and Pentacle) in the Minor Arcana are also identified with the elements of Air, Water, Earth and Fire. The suit of the Wand is usually ascribed to the Fire element, Cup is Water, Sword is Air and Pentacle is Earth. The suits may also relate to the four classes of medieval society. Rods being used to describe the Peasant, Cups the Clergy, Swords the Nobility, and Pentacles the Merchants. The great Irish Poet W.B. Yeats (1865-1939) also noted that the suits symbols have a remarkable similarity to the four magical treasures of the Celtic Legend. These were the Spear of Lug (Wand), the Cauldron of Dagna (Cup), the Sword of Nuada (Sword) and the Stone of Fal (Pentacles). With the coming of Christianity the symbols mutated into four Grail Hollows which were the Spear of Longinus (Wand), the Holy Grail itself (Cup), The Magical Excalibur (Sword) and finally the Stone of Kings (Pentacles), which is often identified with the Stone of the Scone upon which monarchs are still crowned. The traditional descriptions may change but there is always the sequence of pictures that identify who is the King, Queen, Page, and Knight. The Devil’s Picture Book: The Compleat Guide To Tarot Cards is a book that offers insight, reassurance, compassion and decisions regarding Tarot reading but, in my opinion, the wording of the book can give the wrong impression. When I give a psychic reading with the Witch Tarot cards I don’t read their meanings from a book, I simply look at the cards and ideas will come to me. I hear what the pictures are saying and I apply that knowledge to the Querent (the client).
The Wheel of Fortune A stroke of luck will leave you astonished and problems are nearing their end. You will be riding high and spending money but remember, there are rainy days, so put a bit of money aside. If the Justice card is also present in the reading it promises extraordinary events and a renewal of your life. Strength Card The most obvious meaning of the Strength card is that you are about to face a ‘feat of endurance’ but don’t fear, you will triumph. If the Hanged Man card also appears in the reading it indicates that you have an extraordinary ability to master any situation. The Tower The Tower card is always looked upon as a bad card. It can indicate that everything is falling down around you. It might mean that your home is falling into disrepair but another meaning is that a door is about to open for you. However, this is a door that you would never have opened yourself. In some ways the Tower card takes away options but also forces you into a new sense of direction. The Temperance Card This card is something of a mystery, some people don’t know how to interpret the Temperance card. It suggests that the client is very spiritual and has psychic ability. It is a gentle card and is numbered 14 which places it between the dramatic Death and Devil cards. Temperance is the careful control card that can calm a volatile situation. Moderation in all things when this card comes up. The Magician This card is one of my favourite cards as it symbolises great wisdom and understanding. It has a more intuitive meaning when teamed with the High Priestess. The High Priestess is the boss woman. She is the guardian of secrets and has memory, instinct and psychic ability. When teamed with the Magician it is a sign that nothing will stand in your way. . Please phone for a Tarot reading on 07811632353

HILLSBOROUGH HOSTS VARSITY
Flat Street
Thousands of students descended on Hillsborough Stadium on Wednesday as SWFC played host to the city’s famous Varsity Challenge. The annual sporting tournament between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, now in its seventeenth year, concluded with the men’s football finals and a 1-0 Hallam victory. A crowd of 3,500 turned out to support the rival institutions and see the University of Sheffield take home the coveted trophy for the first time in a decade having won the overall competition on aggregate. The club’s CSR Development Manager, Spencer Taylor was delighted that the club was able to host this prestigious event for the fourth year running. He said: “We’re extremely pleased to have been selected to host this year’s Varsity final which proved a huge success with thousands of students creating a wonderful atmosphere. “The event enhances the links between Sheffield Wednesday and both Universities and follows on from the announcement of the club’s ground breaking partnership with Sheffield Hallam University back in March.” The Varsity event is a celebration of sport in Sheffield, showcasing the cities facilities and capabilities for high profile sporting events. It also aims to involve the local community, and each year it nominates a chosen charity to support throughout the competition. This year, partners of the SWFC Community Programme, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, were selected as the official charity of Sheffield Varsity.

THE PROFESSIONAL STARS ON ICE – COME TO SHEFFIELD Ten of the stars of Dancing on Ice will be touring the country over the coming weeks appearing in Sheffield on 3rd to 5th May. Two of the Stars, Frankie Poultney (born in Sheffield) and Matt Evers were at Ice Sheffield last week giving an exhibition and interviews. An amazing array of lifts, jumps and couple of head bangers thrilled everyone there. You can’t fail to admire the skill and appreciate the hard work of up to four hours a day training that they do to achieve such perfection when they perform. Frankie born in Woodseats and Matt from the USA both said the tour is exhausting but they enjoy the chance to show off everything they have worked so hard for. Also there was a 17yr old young man called P J Hallam performing who is the British Junior Champion; trained by Dawn Peckett at Ice Sheffield – he’s definitely someone we’ll see in the future. STEVE THOMPSON FUNERAL DETAILS
Last week we published the sad news that Stephen Thompson, who worked with us here at The Mercury from Issue 1 all the way to Issue 1000, had sadly passed away. All week we have been receiving calls from customers, readers and friends of Stephen all of whom were upset at the news, showing what a popular man he was. His funeral takes place this Friday (19th) at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium at 12:30pm moving on afterwards to the Beauchief hotel. All are welcome and the family have asked for donations to be kindly made to Cavendish Cancer Care in lieu of flowers.

goodwill gesture, to honour all those people who couldn’t make it and so your tickets will be valid for either of the next two dates.
Our first event is on Friday 14th June at the Platinum Suite at Sheffield United Football Club and the second is on Friday 25th October at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel in the city centre.
You MUST however ring our hotline and book into one date or the other and retain your tickets to show on the night.
The weather was very unkind to us at the first reunion, we had unseasonally severe snow, which meant that half of the expected crowd could not make it. Having said that around 200 people did manage to tackle the snow and it turned out to be a fantastic event with brilliant feedback. The venue looked amazing with the glowing poseur tables, a sparkling dance floor and the dancers were amazing. The music brought back many great memories, as did some of the faces, and it was safe to say a brilliant night was had by all. The Mercury have decided, as a

live INTERVIEW
Words by KT Evans Don Broco...remember the name, because we have a very peculiar feeling this Bedford four piece are going to be knocking around for a lengthy amount of time...and we’re very rarely wrong. Fresh off their debut headline tour (a total sell out with additional dates thrown in due to popular demand may we add) Don Broco are buckling up for their very first headline slot at this years Hit The Deck Festival in both Bristol and Nottingham. “This is massive for us,” revels Rob Damiani, front man and face of rock’s most talked about group’s to smash their way into the scene back in 2010. “This is our first headline slot at a festival, it’s going to be absolutely amazing in the main room.” Slap bang at the top of the line-up and easily the most anticipated sets of the split site event, Don Broco’s live performance promises to bring with it something that little bit different from the rest. Unlike the pop-punk influence which seems to have infiltrated this years event, Rob and co veer more towards playing shows with a hearty high five to their British pop influences, a huge aspect of their showcase and one which will no doubt safeguard Don Broco as the band to watch this year. A major reason for their recent UK sell out tour? Too right. “The last few weeks has been amazing. The tours been a sell out which was insane, something which has really set us up for the rest of the year. It’s really made a difference to the band, especially with support for the album (their debut release, Priorities shot straight in at number 14 in the UK album charts, an indication of the bands widespread popularity) and the shows we’ve been doing means that new people are telling us they’re now on board.” A Don BrArmy perhaps...we’ll keep working on that one. 20th and 21st April will see Don Broco hit the finest festival stages, gracing Rock City’s main room on the 21st to conclude the eagerly awaited two day event. Having played the festival last year, Rob expresses his excitement about this weeks gig. “We played last year which was wicked. We came to the festival as punters in the first year so we know the lay out and really like the set up of it. All the venues are pretty intense, the festival itself has got a great vibe.” Tickets can still be purchased for Hit The Deck 2013 at www.hitthedeckfestival.com

Bloody technology. It was the one thousandth issue of the Mercury last week and where was I in the history-making issue of the paper? Nowhere, that’s where! So, why did I manage the biggest epic fail in the history of publishing? Well, it’s all down to technology! Stressed with all the pre-party celebrations, the email servers went down faster than a teen seeing a chip fall down the Y Fronts of any member of One Direction at a Meet ‘N’ Greet, so my column never made it to the paper. Bugger! However, rather than miss the issue entirely, I figured I’d pretend to have made the celebratory issue – yay – go me – and recycle my column here today. So this is the epic one thousandth issue of the Mercury, and I've pulled out all of the stops in an effort to be as controversial, opinionated, and generally saucy as possible. But that hasn’t happened, as this had to be the week ex-Prime Minster and saucy warmonger, Baroness Thatcher passed away, and of course, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to discuss an event that has polarised the nation in ways I’ve never seen before. No one will so much as bat an eyelid when John Major (who?) departs the earth for his extremely boring holiday villa in Hell, but for many, it seems as though Thatcher’s passing is an opportunity to vent many people’s frustrations about life in one convenient coffin-shaped direction. It’s almost as though it’s become fashionable – and worse – acceptable to make some kind of negative commentary about her death. Whether positive or negative, everyone seems to have an opinion. And to further incite people, Billy (arse-muffin) Bragg comes along with the comment that it’s ok to slag off the dead if they’re a public figure, which is just nonsense. Either it’s OK to speak ill of the dead or it’s not. My personal viewpoint is much more moderate. Thatcher was in power over twenty years ago, if you can't make peace with it by now then you really do have a few unresolved issues (ooh, I managed to be controversial after all). The people who are still angry are the ones who haven’t spoken to their sister because <insert some random and ludicrous excuse about an argument that you can't even remember> but that doesn’t matter; you're going to be angry anyway reason be damned! If you've seen Facebook, you'll see all those posts from kids trying to discuss the situation and having absolutely no idea who she was. Isn’t it disturbing that twenty year

HADOUKEN LEADMILL 22/04/13
PREVIEW Words by KT Evans
Having been described by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe as unique within the bass culture, Hadouken are the front runners within new rave / grimecore and everything else in between. With an unmistakeable fiery tone and overwhelming sense of experimentation within each and every one of their explosive tracks, the British clan have graced stages across the UK and beyond winning a barrage of fans along the way. Now part of a UK full tour, the band are set to play Leadmill Sheffield on 22nd April. Whether you’re into dance, electro, hardcore or grime music, it would be hard not to already have at least a smidgen of prior knowledge about UK sensation Hadouken. The London based five piece however may have more to them that first meets the eye...the ability to master and dominate a crowd. Frontman, writer and producer James Smith captures his audience with his anthemic scale vocals, something which acts as a catalyst for all who witness to make like MJ and get their moves on. Having performed within music festivals across the world including Leeds and Reading, London’s 02 Arena and Itunes Festival, we suggest you buckle up for a fierce showcasing at Sheffield’s Leadmill...you’ve been warned. Three albums now under their belt with the latest “Every Weekend” flying straight in at number 15 in the official itunes charts on the first day of its release, Hadouken are far more that just a band who enjoy playing around with heavy synths...they are also master producers. Favoured by each and every band who has been given the Hadouken treatment, the group have worked with the likes of The Klaxons, Bloc Party, Plan B and DJ Fresh to add their own additional bite to some of the UK’s most successful singles. An aspect of the live set and weaving intricately the two sides of their character, Hadouken bring together a variety of music tastes and preferences to deliver on a mind blowing colossal scale not only through the stereo but within their hugely anticipated live performances aswell. Tickets are still available so check out www.leadmill.co.uk for purchase details, stage times and admission information. See you in the pit.
olds are leaving school without knowing anything about one of the most influential public figures of the last century? It’s even more alarming that their comments aren't a sign of the generation gap, but the IQ gap. Kids have precious little education and even less interest in finding out the truth of a situation before spouting their vacuous opinions online. If it's not about Harry Styles or the latest mobile phone then they're just not interested. But despite being deeply ignorant, they still have an opinion and they’re going to vent it! Because that’s what we do these days… So I have to wonder when it became fashionable to be as offensive as you could online or offline? Have people lost something since the Thatcher years, or is the world genuinely becoming a darker and bleaker place? By the time you read this, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead will be number one on iTunes! Amusing story or political statement? Or are people just getting on the misery bandwagon because they have nothing better to do, or do people genuinely have a right to be angry after so long? So, if you were affected by the Thatcher years (and countless were), isn’t it time to call it a day and to put it all to rest? She's in the ground now, and it's all over. She’ll be nothing but dirt soon and capable of no more harm… … Unless the rumours were true and her body was actually toxic and she manages to pollute the English countryside with her venom – one last laugh from beyond the grave. Maybe I’ve been reading too many horror novels! And that’s it. The end of my column in the one thousandth issue of the Mercury. Congratulations, old girl, you did good (and yes I’m still talking about the paper). I had expected to talk about that Secret Dogging TV show and making up words like rimbuttlering and mongerfelching this week, but instead, I talked about something a bit more important. If you are offended, then perhaps this is a moment to remind yourself that we live in a world where people attack without thinking, and maybe, just maybe, this is the time for a single moment of reflection, ‘cos it’s not about the person (not in this case) but about the actions themselves and the effect that negativity has on others. We’ll be back on track with more smut next week where our hero finally gets to see the buxom princess’ milky white breasts. But she doesn’t put out. Those royal gals never do. They’re all over the hero while the cameras are running but as soon as they’re alone, there’s not even the promise of a pearl necklace as a reward for being rescued. But that’s politics for you.
GATECRASHER HOSTS MONUMENTAL 20TH BIRTHDAY PARTY The full line-up has been announced for Gatecrasher’s monumental 20th birthday party at Donington Park. House music sensation Laidback Luke , technological whizzkid Eddie Halliwell and Sweden’s next big thing Mikael Weermets will be joining the bill at what is set to be a night that will go down in the history books. 2013 marks a momentous year for renowned clubbing giant Gatecrasher. The world-famous club brand is to celebrate twenty years at the forefront of dance music culture with an awe-inspiring series of global events and releases. A true celebration of Gatecrasher past, present, and future! Kicking off the 20/20 celebrations, Gatecrasher has announced a 10,000 capacity warehouse party that will be taking place at Castle Donington on the 5th of May. The event features a line-up of epic proportions, which includes thrilling Pendulum DJ duo Knife Party, chart topping Dutch house star Nicky Romero, electro-house producer, globetrotting DJ and Dim Mak label boss Steve Aoki, heavyweight house master Laidback Luke, and Gatecrasher favourite Eddie Halliwell. The VIP room will be hosted by the Secret Party Project. Core to its brand values, Gatecrasher aims to smash boundaries in terms of production. An event of such scale has never seen before. The set-up will deliver the ultimate audio-visual experience. Each DJ concept will come to life with holographic visuals, 3D animation mapping projections, pyrotechnics and confetti cannons. Gatecrasher will also add some 2013 production magic to the event, as only they know how! Expect state-of-the-art computer wizardry, spectacular visual stimulation and out-ofthis-world originality. THE LINE-UP Knife Party are an electro-house and dubstep duo from Australia, founded by two of the members of electro-rock band Pendulum – Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen. The duo started in 2011 so have a short history to date, but they played their first Knife Party performance at Ibiza’s Space club in August of that year. Pioneers of a new club sound, Knife Party combine electro-house, dubstep, trance and much, much more. With massive remixes of Labrinth and Nero achieving international success, they are on the verge of much bigger things, working with the likes of Skrillex and Steve Aoki. They have already smashed America with their own Haunted House package, selling-out 8000 capacity events night after night. The word wunderkind was pretty much invented for the likes of Nicky Romero. He started 2012 as one
of MTV’s EDM Artists To Watch in 2012 and did not disappoint. Nicky played some of the biggest festivals in the world including Ultra, EDC, Winter Music Conference and Tomorrowland. 2012 was a year emblematic of a world’s top-tier DJ. Steve Aoki, arguably one of the world’s busiest and most well respected DJ and producers, also found time to found his own label in 1996, Dim Mak Records. Since then, he has launched the careers of many other hugely successful acts such as Bloc Party, Battles, The Kills, The Gossip, Klaxons, and the Mystery Jets, just to name a few. There is no denying that Dutch turbine Laidback Luke has truly established a name for himself. His dynamic fusion of hyper-drive-house-step & ghetto-jack-trance-bass is the sound of now and has been for the past decade – and there is no sign of it slowing down! The Dutch heavy weight house master is loved all over the globe: his Super You&Me events sell out wherever it goes to and he is consistently ranked in the top echelons of the (in) famous and by-all-means-wanted TOP 100 DJ lists. Eddie Halliwell is a superstar of the dance music scene, having been named as one of the ‘New Superstar DJ’s’ by Mixmag and nominated in its ‘Greatest DJ Of All Time’ poll. In the words of Judge Jules, ‘Eddie looks in to people’s eyes and he performs. Incredible stage performance, incredible skills, and an almost telepathic ability to read a crowd – Eddie’s got everything.’ In the modern era of dance music, Sweden has done for house music what the Netherlands did for trance and Germany for techno. From electronic titans Eric Prydz, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello to Avicii, Dada Life and Adrian Lux, Sweden has arguably produced some of the scenes most exported performers in recent times. The awareness of these artists has given rise to a new generation of grassroots talent and one such name that is hotly tipped to follow in the same footsteps as his predecessors is Mikael Weermets. Tickets are priced Standard, £37.50, VIP, £75 and are still available from www.gatecrasher.com
COMPETITION Gatecrasher have kindly donated a pair of tickets for five lucky readers to attend this amazing event. Simply answer the following question and send your answer along with a daytime contact number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk before noon on Wednesday 24th April.

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
I’m occasionally asked how on earth I got into writing for angling media and what does my week consist of....it varies in truth, but if you’re interested in what goes on, here goes with a general appraisal of any week through the year..... Monday; is Carp-Talk Magazine submission day, so all the reports I’ve had over the preceding week are edited, pictures resized, labelled and filed correctly, then the complete article is written up, checked, edited and sent. I have between 700-1800 words to file, so that little beauty takes around four hours each week, and in winter, when no-one is catching, is incredibly taxing sometimes! Tuesday; often spent chasing around the country confirming features for Tackle & Gun magazine, or on the telephone to locate suitable subjects for future submissions, often planned three months in advance. Wednesday; planning Facebook. That may sound easy, but I currently administer four other Facebook pages in addition to my own, so any information which comes in during the week must be sorted, edited, and placed up in the correct order and with some relevance to what is happening on the fishery or within company. Thursday; a few hours fishing hopefully, generally enough to catch something for a planned or commissioned article, take my own photographs or the capture, the rigs, baits, surroundings and ensure I get any necessary details to complete the article. Friday; this column, writing up yesterday’s angling session, and then chasing up whatever has been missed or forgotten during the week....there is always something! Saturday; is generally product review day. Hopefully any products I’ve been asked to review have been used on the Thursday, so an honest review is written; if the product is useless, the review is rarely published (not my choice!) and you will never see it, but I will write it with integrity and hope it does get used! Sunday; day off......only joking, Sunday is planning day for the following week. Checking routes for my drive around on Tuesday, ploughing through emails, accepting or declining ‘jobs’ and generally tidying up! Might not sound like much, but everyday I’ve also got to make (and monitor!) Facebook postings, Twitter account updates, answer email and telephone calls, check facts before publishing and answer customer queries via social media. Even on holiday, this checklist is adhered to; I’ve submitted copy from Moroccan internet cafes (French keyboards are not easy to use!), cottages in deepest Devon via a smartphone weblink, caravans in Dorset and hotel rooms in Florida! Oh, and whilst I think about it, I’ve got a full time 42 hours a week job too! So having said all that, and having given you an insight into a typical week, why do I do it? It certainly doesn’t pay the mortgage, (are you listening boss?) and it can be exceptionally difficult to achieve everything required in any particular week, but it is also great fun....and if it’s fun, then it’s NEVER work is it........?

racing form by Timelord
At Ayr the big race is the Grade 3 Scottish Grand National where Aurora’s encore bids to follow up his Aintree Grand National success. This is supported by three other good races including the Grade 2 Scottish Champion Hurdle. At Newbury there are four excellent flat races, including three Group Three races. Ayr: 2.05 Arcadia Consulting William Dickie & Mary Robertson Future Champions Novices’ Chase, (Vulmidas Cup), 5yo+, 2m 4f: Benefficient is not lightly passed over after his Grade 2 Jewson Chase success at the Cheltenham Festival. However, Nicky Henderson’s Rajdhani Express is just preferred in his attempt to follow up his Listed Festival win where he won the Rewards4Racing Novices’ Handicap Chase off top weight (less Sam Waley-Cohen’s 5lb claim). The amateur is again in the plate and seemed to get on well with his mount there. Of the others Upsilon Bleu, Aibrean, Changing Times, Empire Levant, Tap Night and Drumshambo are all respected and should go well. 2.40 QTS Scottish Champion Hurdle (Limited Handicap), Grade 2, 2m: Several of these are running well at present. Une Artiste just shades it in my book from Court Minstrel, Grumeti and Cockney Sparrow. Others to note are Shotavodka, Local Hero, Forgotten Voice and Sametegal. 3.15 Scotty Brand Handicap Chase, Listed, 5yo+, 2m: This looks to be another very competitive affair. On my figures from their last time out runs Pepite Rose gets a narrow verdict over Bocciani, Eastlake and Conquisto. Doeslessthanme, Petit Robin, King’s Grey and Kie make up the shortlist from last time out efforts but if there is to be an upset it could come from National winning trainer Sue Smith’s Stagecoach Pearl who holds the top lifetime figure in my system. 3.50 Coral Scottish Grand National Handicap Chase, Grade 3, 4m 110yds: Auroras Encore could live up to his name and follow up his Aintree success and land a famous double. After his heroics at Liverpool he still looked a relatively fresh horse to me and as long as those efforts haven’t taken too much of an edge off him he can double up here. If he doesn’t make the trip up to Ayr my first reserve slot goes to Our Mick who ran well to finish second to Golden Chieftain at Cheltenham. Others that ran well in that race are White Star Line and Nuts N Bolts who get second and third reserve slots respectively. Mr Moss, Quentin Collonges, Beneficial Reform and Major Malarkey are others that ran well last time while the potential major shock horse could be lurking in the shape of John Wade’s Always Right.
3.30 Aon Greenham Stakes, Group 3, 3yo Colts & Geldings, 7f: There is very little between John Gosden’s Ghurair and Richard Hannon’s Havana Gold on their Newmarket running in the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2yo Trophy and these two could fight out the finish again here. Ghurair gets the verdict but it will not be easy. Of the rest most appeal is made by: Anna’s Pearl; Leitir Mor; Sir Patrick Moore; Tawhid; and Moohajim. I have very little between these five and all are close enough to the top two in my ratings to be quite troublesome. Watch for where the value lies amongst this lot! Selection Summary: I have given one selection a race for all four afternoon UK meetings. For reserves in the event of non runners in the TV races please see above Ayr: 1.40 Arctic Court 2.05 Rajdhani Express 2.40 Une Artiste 3.15 Pepite Rose 3.50 Auroras Encore, if absent Our Mick 4.25 Kian’s Delight 5.00 White Star Line 5.35 Regal Encore Newbury: 1.15 Snow Trooper 1.50 Noble Mission 2.20 Educate 2.55 The Gold Cheongsam 3.30 Ghurair, if absent Havana Gold 4.05 Number One London 4.40 Musikhani Bangor: 1.55 Berkeley Barron 2.30 Grey Gold 3.05 Miss Overdrive 3.40 Jupiter Rex 4.15 Share Option 4.50 Troyan 5.20 Double Mead Thirsk: 2.15 Whispered Times 2.50 Red Baron 3.25 Imperial Djay 4.00 Mysterious Man 4.35 Chasing Dreams 5.10 Pintura 5.45 Baldemar Good Luck!
GOLF TOURS
Newbury: 1.50 Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes, Registered as The John Porter Stakes, 4yo+, Group 3, 1m 4f 5yds: Sir Henry Cecil’s Noble Mission narrowly gets the vote in this wide open event, from Rosslynn Castle, Guarantee, Allied Powers, Fattsota and Media Hype. 2.20 Berry Bros & Rudd Magnum Spring Cup Handicap, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m: Ismail Mohammed’s Educate took the Doncaster Spring Mile by a head from Boots and Spurs with Haaf A Sixpence a further length back in third. He is still progressing in my opinion and can follow up in this event despite being slightly worse off in the weights with the other two. This race brings together the form lines of the Doncaster Spring Mile and the Lincoln. Of the two races I just favour the Spring Mile which was run slightly quicker than the Lincoln. From that latter race the first four home: Levitate; Global Village; Brae Hill; and Justonefortheroad are all going to be dangerous to the selection, as is Dream Tune whose fifth behind Compton at Ascot last October also reads well. 2.55 Dubai Duty Free Stakes, Registered as The Fred Darling Stakes, Group 3, 3yo Fillies, 7f: The one that makes most appeal to me here is The Gold Cheongsam whose third to Victrix Ludorum at Newmarket in the £300,000 Tatttersalls Millions 2yo Fillies’ Trophy last October looks to give her the edge over these rivals. Most danger could appear in the form of Valais Girl who was sixth in that valuable Sales race. Agent Allison and Desert Image make most appeal from the remainder.

Millers & Rovers News 2012-13
MILLERS KEEP PRESSURE ON TOP TEAMS
KIERAN Agard was the Rotherham United hero as his second-half strike helped the Millers’ keep the pressure on League Two’s frontrunners following a 2-1 victory over Fleetwood Town. Following their handsome victory over Exeter in midweek, Steve Evans kept faith with the majority of his starting line-up with the only change being skipper Johnny Mullins returning at full-back following suspension at the expense of Dale Tonge. There was a familiar face for Millers’ followers in the Fleetwood line-up with Gareth Evans making a return to the New York Stadium. The Millers were quick out of the blocks and they made the perfect start by making the breakthrough after just three minutes. Following a Fleetwood attack, Craig Morgan made a clearance which fizzed down the touchline and with Daniel Nardiello and Alex Revell in hot pursuit, Alan Goodall’s backpass saw ‘keeper Scott Davies make a hurried clearance. The ball fell invitingly into the stride of Nardiello, who controlled smartly before firing a half volley which beat the outstretched hand of Davies before nestling into the bottom corner of the goal. The Ex-Exeter striker’s joy was tempered as he was caught by a last-ditch tackle from a visitors’ defender as he struck goalwards and was forced to leave the pitch shortly after celebrating the goal. The home sides’ lead then proved to be short-lived when still down to ten men, Fleetwood stunned the home faithful by equalising on six minutes. Evans got the better of Kari Arnason on the left wing before playing an incisive centre across the goalmouth but although Junior Brown fluffed his effort, the ball fell kindly into the path of David Ball, who stroked the ball home from point-blank range. The Millers’ cause was not helped when Nardiello was forced to leave the action with Lee Frecklington entering the fray as Kieran Agard joined Revell upfront. The visitors were visibly buoyed by the leveller and Ball curled a delightful effort which had Scott Shearer scrambling across his goal before Revell almost got on the end of Pringle’s mishit effort but he was adjudged offside as he looked to poke goalwards minutes later. Minutes later, Frecklington and Jamie McGuire were involved in an ugly tussle with both players on the floor following a collision and McGuire was fortunate to escape with a yellow card after initially lashing out at Frecklington, which saw the Rotherham midfielder react angrily. Just shy of the half-hour mark, Arnason floated a free-kick which was flicked on smartly by Revell into the path of Agard, who got on the wrong side of his marker but with the goal at his mercy, he dragged his shot wide of the target. At the other end, after Frecklington hacked down McGuire in an inviting position, Evans failed to trouble Shearer with the resultant free kick as it sailed over the bar. After Fleetwood failed to clear decisively, Pringle pounced on possession before playing a slide-rule pass into the path of Frecklington, whose crosscum-shot was deflected by Shaun Beeley, but despite Davies being wrong-footed, the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the upright. With half-time approaching, Michael O’Connor fired a fierce free-kick from distance which had Davies at full stretch but it whizzed narrowly wide of the upright. Moments later, Arnason arrowed a long throw into the box which had the visitors’ defence at sixes and sevens but despite finding Pringle in acres of space at the far post, he blazed his effort over from close range. Half-time:- Rotherham United 1 Fleetwood Town 1 Following the restart, Fleetwood had the first sight of goal when Brown fired a daisycutter which was comfortably gathered by Shearer. Referee Carl Boyeson then waved away strong home appeals for a spot-kick when Revell appeared to be tripped by Jamille Matt before O’Connor fired a dipping volley which whizzed narrowly over in the bar in the next phase of play. The Millers were building the pressure and after Beeley’s backheader caught Davies flat-footed, Revell almost left the Fleetwood ‘keeper red-faced as he sneaked in but his toe-poked effort rolled tantalisingly wide. The home side were looking the most likely and they came within a whisker of regaining the lead when Mullins towered above his marker following a Pringle inswinger but his looping header was cleared off the line by a well-stationed defender. However, the Millers’ were rewarded for their pressure on 63 minutes when Frecklington found Pringle on the edge of the box, who jinked his way past his marker to find a yard of space before drilling an effort which was deflected into the path of Agard, who got the ball from under his feet before calmly
slotting the ball into the corner of the goal. Rotherham were galvanised by the strike and Frecklington’s snap shot from just outside the box almost made it three before Arnason headed over from O’Connor’s corner moments later. The visitors’ were visibly rattled and Beeley found himself in the referee’s notebook for a cynical trip on Agard before Conor McLaughlin fizzed an effort which failed to trouble Shearer. Pringle then became the latest to see yellow for hauling down Beeley in full flight before Frecklington found Pringle, who skimmed an effort which forced Davies in a full-length save minutes later. However, the Cod Army almost stunned the Millers with a speedy counter attack and sub Andrew Mangan worked a shooting position but from an acute angle, his strike struck the side netting with Shearer guarding the near post. Teams:- Rotherham- Shearer, Mullins, Arnason, Morgan, Skarz, Agard (Ainsworth 84), O’Connor, Noble, Pringle, Revell (Odejayi 90+1), Nardiello (Frecklington 8). Unused:- Warrington, Tonge, Davis, Ridehalgh. Fleetwood:- Davies, Beeley (Nicholson 83), Matt, Brown, Goodall, McLaughlin, McGuire (Fountaine 90), Ball, Edwards, Evans (Mangan 76), McKenna. Unused:- Lucas, Barry, Crowther, Atkinson.
Food Served Every Saturday WEEEKEND ROUND-UP LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke
It has been a busy week in the County Senior League, with a full fixture list on the weekend as well as a busy midweek schedule. Premier Division It has been a big week at the top of the Premier Division, especially for the league leaders Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley. In midweek Shaw Lane had to work hard for a 2-1 win over Davy FC at Davy Sports Club. They built on that win on Saturday with an impressive 5-1 home win over Kinsley Boys. Both Danny Barlow and Carl Fothergill were on target twice for Shaw Lane. Their lead at the top is now at four points with a game spare. Millmoor Juniors bounced back from last weeks’ 3-1 home loss to Shaw Lane with back-to-back wins. Firstly, they were 2-0 winners at home to Wombwell Main last Tuesday. They then went on to beat Houghton Main 1-0 thanks to a goal from Liam Royles. Those two wins leave Millmoor Juniors second. Houghton Main have had a bad week by their standards. They lost last Saturday at home to fellow title rivals Penistone Church. On Wednesday night they suffered a 5-0 home defeat to Everest FC. Just as they thought things could not get any worse for themselves they were downed 1-0 at home to Millmoor Juniors. All this means they are ten points off the lead in fifth position. Handsworth have been the team to watch this past week. They drew 2-2 away against Swallownest Miners Welfare midweek. They followed this up on Saturday with an equally frenetic 4-3 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. They sit in third place, six points back, but have played three games more than the leaders. Penistone Church are in fourth place despite a 0-0 draw with mid-table Wombwell Main. They have a game in hand of the leaders, but are eight points off the pace. As mentioned previously, Everest were 5-0 winners midweek against Houghton Main. Well on Saturday they edged-out. They have now won four of their last six league games, and sit in a comfortable midtable position. David Sills was in fine form for Swallownest Miners Welfare on Saturday. He scored a hat-trick to help inspire Swallownest to a 5-0 win over South Kirkby Colliery. The loss is South Kirkby Colliery fourth in a row, and leaves them bottom. They are four points adrift of the next team Davy FC, who have are having an equally dismal time of it. They loss back-to-back this week to Shaw Lane and then suffered a 3-2 home loss to High Green Villa. They
SECOND HALF PAYNTER BRACE WINS POINTS FOR ROVERS A cold breeze was still with us together with a grey sky but at least it was dry at Gresty Road, for the match against new JPT winners, Crewe Alexandra. The Rovers made two changes to their starting line-up. Andy Griffin suffered a leg injury on Tuesday against Carlisle United and with Paul Quinn also out with injury the only available full back is James Husband, normally a left sided player. Gary Woods was also out, with a back injury so Neil Sullivan was between the posts. The home team made five changes to their starting line-up following the home defeat to Brentford on Tuesday. Steve Philips, Kevin Stewart, Abdul Osman, Luke Murphy and Ajay Leitch-Smith made way for Alan Martin, George Ray, Michael West, Chuks Aneke and Kelvin Mellor. The Rovers got the first half underway, kicking towards the Gresty Road end. The Rovers attacked from the kick off and won a corner in the 3rd minute. This came to nothing then minutes later Husband crossed from the right but Brown, with a glancing header, put wide. Crewe threatened in the tenth minute but it petered out. Coppinger then tried a shot from 30yards but was just wide of the post. In the 18th minute Aneke, for the home team, had a go from 25yards but put it high over the bar. The Rovers then went down the left with Coppinger, who passed inside to Lundstram but his effort from 25yards was saved by Martin. Then a corner to the Rovers came to nothing. In the 23rd minute Crewe went down their left, with Clayton eventually putting over the bar from just outside the penalty area. The Rovers were enjoying most of the possession and on the half hour Lundstram received in the home half and went round at least three men before shooting from 25 yards but put it straight at Martin, who saved comfortably. Despite having most of the possession the Rovers couldn’t find a way to goal and in the 36th minute they nearly paid for it. Moore got a clear sight of goal from 15 yards to the right of goal but Sullivan spread himself as the shot came in and blocked it before being cleared. A corner to the Alex came to nothing. Back are currently on a run of ten straight league losses. Division One The First Division title race got that bit tighter over the past week. League leaders Athersley Recreation Reserves were 4-0 winners on Saturday away to fourth placed Silkstone United, to leave them unbeaten in their last fifteen league games. Despite this win their lead was cut to just one point, with Oughtibridge WMSC winning their game in hand midweek. Oughtibridge were impressive 4-1 winners over Hallam Reserves midweek. They were just as impressive at the weekend, when they beat Bramley Sunnyisde Juniors 3-0 at Ruby Cook Playing Fields. Swinton Athletic are in third but have slipped-off the pace a little, as they lost 2-1 to Penistone Church Reserves on Saturday. Ben Malcolm (pen) and Matt Young scored the goals for the in-form Penistone. Penistone sit in fifth place. Hallam Reserves have had a Jekyll and Hyde week. They started the week, with an excellent 4-1 home win over Sheffield Bankers. They then lost 4-1 Oughtibridge WMSC on Wednesday night. On Saturday it was a more low-key affair, losing 1-0 at home to Thorpe Hesley despite missing a penalty. They sit in mid-table, but this week highlight perfectly their inconsistencies this term. It is as it were at the bottom, with only Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves in the bottom three in action this week. Worsbrough lost narrowly 1-0 at home to Thorpe Hesley midweek. Division Two Division Two is winding-down now with only two games left to play following last weekend. That being said it was a very significant week. Firstly, league leaders Jubilee Sports beat Boynton Sports 6-0 away from home midweek. This win handed the title to Jubilee. Following this Jubilee travelled to Grange Park on Saturday to face Millmoor Juniors Reserves. This result also fell in the Champions’ favour, as they ran out 3-1 winners. Also in Division Two, Hare & Hounds MFC secured third place, with a 3-1 win over Kiveton Park Reserves at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre. Meadowhall League League Cup Semi-Final There was drama in the Semi-Final between Wadsley Bridge WMC and Hackenthorpe A at Sandygate. The game was 2-2 with 90 minutes played, but Hackenthorpe A snatched the tie winning 3-2 after extra-time. This came after Hackenthorpe only booked their place in the Semi-Final on Tuesday, when they beat Arundel 3-0. Hackenthorpe will face Rawson Spring in the Final on Tuesday 14th May at Bramall Lane. Tinsley Trophy Semi-Final Steven Barmmer and Andrew Rodgers were both on the score-sheet for Arbourthorne EA, as they beat
to the other end went the Rovers where Hume put wide followed shortly after by Cotterill doing the same from just outside the penalty area. In the 41st minute a long clearance downfield from the Rovers defence put Hume clear on goal. He tried to lob the keeper as he came out but Martin caught it much to Humes’s chagrin. The home team replied by forcing a corner, which was cleared. Hume then had a good shot blocked at the expense of a corner, which came out of defence to Furman but he fired over the bar. The Rovers had the ball in the net in the 44th minute but Furman was given offside. In the last minute, a corner to the Rovers was touched goalwards at the near post by Hume but Martin was there to block it and clear. The home team kicked off but the Rovers were soon on the attack, with Husband firing wide from 30 yards three minutes in. A corner to the Rovers came to nothing and then a good build-up ended with Hume stabbing the ball wide from close range. Then, in the 54th minute, calamity befell the Rovers. Hume received halfway in the opponent’s half and passed the ball backwards but there wasn’t a white shirt anywhere near it. CLAYTON picked it up halfway in the Rovers half took it on and fired low across the goal and into the far bottom corner. Minutes later and Cotterill hit a free kick from a central position over the bar from 25yards. The Rovers had the ball in the net again in the 59th minute when Brown, clearly offside, touched a shot from Furman into the net. On the hour, and Paynter came on for Hume. Past the hour and a free kick from the Rovers right, was met by a glancing header by McCombe but it went wide. Two minutes later and another free kick to the Rovers from the right touchline was met with a good header by Jones but Martin, diving to his right, saved on the goal-line. Then, in the 66th minute, came the Rovers equaliser. PAYNTER received the ball to the left of goal, took it on and rifled into the far corner of the net from just outside the penalty area. In the 69th minute a good cross from Spurr on the left forced a corner, which Cotterill placed to the middle. A back header from Jones fell to the feet of PAYNTER, who planted it into the net to give the Rovers the lead. Crewe tried to hit back but the Rovers defence were not in the mood to let them get a grip on the game. The clock ran down, including five minutes of added time but the Rovers were comfortably in control. A good win to keep the pressure on the following pack at the top. Rawson Spring 2-1 at the Civil Service Ground. The Division One leaders will face City Taxis (Stradbroke) in the final on Monday 22nd April. Premier Division High Noon and Royal Earl played-out an eleven goal thriller at Davy Sports Club. Scott Bates scored a hat-trick for Royal Earl to help them to a 7-4 win. The win is Royal Earl’s third in four games, and carried them into fifth position in the table. Nick Owen scored a hat-trick for Greenhill White Hart to inspire them to a 4-0 win over Arundel. Miles Ridall was also on the score-sheet for Greenhill, keeping them in fourth. Brunsmeer Abbey AJW bounced back from a midweek 4-2 loss to High Noon, by beating Sharrow United 2-1 at Warminster Road. Division One Tim Council proved to be the difference again for Penistone Church; scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Jack-in-a-Box. The win takes Penistone joint top, but they have played six games more than the leaders Arbourthorne. Tom Bland and Adam Wragg were on target for Woodhouse Juniors, in their 2-1 win over Winn Gardens at Handsworth Grange School. HSBC recovered from last weeks’ 6-3 loss to Hackenthorpe B, by beating bottom side Ridgeway Athletic 6-2, in the big six pointer at the bottom. Division Two 19 year old Cohn Sanderson scored a hat-trick for Mosborough B, in their 7-2 win over Wadsley FC at Niagra Sports Club. Bystrany Sheffield were held for the fourth time in six games. This time they drew 2-2 with Norton Athletic at Handsworth Grange School. U21 Division Sheffield FC U21’s took another step towards the U21 title, with a 1-0 win over Sharrow United U21’s at Parsons Cross Park. However Throstles U21’s are still keeping the pressure on the leaders. Throstles defeated Hackenthorpe Warriors U21’s 2-1 this weekend, thanks to goals from Perry Jackson and Daniel Winfield. Throstles are only three points off the lead with only three games to play. John Pugh was on the score-sheet five teams for Dronfield Town U21’s in their 7-1 win over Swinton Spartans U21’s. The win is Dronfield’s sixth straight in the league and leaves them only a point off third place with three games in hand. Greasborough U21’s were 4-0 winners over Woodhouse Juniors U21’s at Roughwood Fields. Matt Allen scored three of those goals, as Greasborough consolidated their third place position.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 MORGAN OFF TO WINNING START SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Chris Morgan marked his first game in temporary charge of the Blades with a home win. The strike-pairing he named both scored - Chris Porter and Dave Kitson both directing home Tony McMahon crosses. In a rip-roaring first half the fired up Blades created no less than 12 chances and Swindon were forced to kick off their own line on three separate occasions. Chris Morgan’s first team selection saw McMahon and Porter recalled with Higginbotham and Forte dropping to the bench, where they were joined by Whitehouse, who was also added to the list of substitutes. Tracksuited and flanked by David Unsworth, Morgan received a rapturous reception from the Unitedites, who saw their favourites quickly on the offensive. Within a minute a cross by Murphy was turned over the crossbar by McDonald and moments later a McMahon inswinging free-kick appeared to touch Maguire on the way to connecting with a post. For Swindon, Luongo’s half-volley was straight at Long but the visitors were struggling to cope with United’s electric start and between minutes 9 and 13... there were FIVE good chances. Firstly, both Porter and Kitson were denied by goal-line clearances in the same move and then Murphy’s shot, after cutting inside, was saved by the goalkeeper after intelligent passes from Doyle and Hill. Porter was also denied by Foderingham after racing onto a Kitson pass and the overworked goalkeeper also kept out a long-ranger from Murphy.
Following a foul on Porter, a quick free-kick by Kitson caught on Swindon but Doyle was unable to capitalise and poked wide on 20 minutes, then Porter was put through again by Kitson but the subsequent shot was across goal and wide. The highly involved Porter then charged down a clearance by Foderingham but luck was on the goalkeeper’s side and he recovered. Long was twice called into action, pushing over a De Vita shot and rushing off his line to prevent Williams connecting with a short back-pass from Collins... but between those efforts the Blades had deservedly taken the lead. Swindon, who picked up four first half bookings, were conceding free-kicks in dangerous positions and from one, on 37 minutes, McMahon’s delivery from the right was met by PORTER, who held off his marker and headed home from close range. There were two further, good chances for the Blades to extend the lead. Flynn raced on to a Collins pass as Swindon switched off but his effort, after holding off the attentions of Flint, was kicked off the line by McCormack, who then conceded yet another free-kick which McMahon curled against a post with Foderingham scrambling.Swindon must have wondered what had hit them when they trudged off at half-time, whilst Blades fans were off their feet and applauding as the players disappeared for a deserved cuppa. The visitors made the better start to the second half, applying a little pressure, but all they had to show for the first 15 minutes of the half were shots from Byrne and substitute Rooney, both of which were off target. Ward also headed wide a corner from Ferry soon after. For United, McMahon blazed a free-kick over, whilst Morgan’s first change was replacing Murphy with McFadzean. Blades fans got excited on 73 minutes when Ferry deflected Doyle’s cross into the path of Kitson but the Swindon midfielder recovered to prevent the striker getting a shot away. Whitehouse was handed a home debut
when he replaced McDonald with little over ten minutes to play - and soon after the Blades were celebrating again. KITSON, who played an important role in winning the throw from which United scored, got a deft touch to McMahon’s curling cross and although Foderingham got his hand to the ball, he was unable to keep the ball out of the Kop net. Porter received an ovation when he was replaced by Ironside moments later and the young striker had a shot blocked before Long was called upon to palm away a shot from Francis. On 88 minutes McFadzean latched on to Doyle pass but shot just wide when moving at pace, whilst five minutes of added time were comfortably negotiated, despite Luke Rooney shooting wide and Whitehouse slicing an attempted clearance across goal! Blades: Long, Maguire, Hill, Flynn, Doyle, Porter (Ironside 84), McDonald (Whitehouse 79), Kitson, N. Collins, Murphy (McFadzean 70), McMahon. Unused: Higginbotham, Forte, Robson, Coyne. Swindon: Foderingham, Flint, Ferry, J. Collins (Francis 72), Roberts (L. Rooney 62), McCormack, Williams, Ward, De Vita (A. Rooney 56), Byrne, Luongo. Unused: Devera, Navaro, Bedwell, Waldon.
PLAYERS TAKES CREDIT SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Chris Morgan heaped praise on the players following Saturday’s crucial 2-0 win over Swindon Town at Bramall Lane. The win, in Morgan’s first game in charge since the departure of Danny Wilson on Wednesday night, keeps the Blades firmly in the race for automatic promotion. Speaking afterwards, Morgan said he couldn’t have asked for a more dominant display. He commented: “All we have spoken about since Thursday was putting a performance in and believing in ourselves. “We wanted the lads to relax, express themselves offensive and do what comes naturally. “This result was down to determination, desire and effort, to a man they were fantastic. “If you have that desire to be better than your opponent, you will never go far wrong. “I want the lads to enjoy the result, but after Saturday night, we must focus on Brentford. Morgan also reserved special for the first-half showing, which saw the Blades dictate proceedings.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 EX OWL DOWNS OWLS SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
A quickfire double from ex-Owl Luke Varney saw Leeds come from behind to beat the Owls by the odd goal in three at Elland Road. The striker, who enjoyed three separate loan spells with Wednesday between 2009 and 2010, notched two second half headers after Jermaine Johnson had given the visitors the lead before the break. The Owls launched a late flurry in search of an equaliser but just failed to make
the breakthrough and their recent purple patch came to an end. With the sun shining and a cracking atmosphere to boot, all the ingredients were in place for a lively Yorkshire derby. Wednesday went into the clash buoyed by back to back wins over Blackburn and Millwall while Leeds had suffered four consecutive defeats and were out to buck that trend under new boss Brian McDermott. After an even start to the contest, the first real chance fell to Leeds striker Steve Morison, who was lurking in the area following a deep free kick, but Chris Kirkland was alert to the danger and saved well from close range. At the midway point in the first period, and opportunities at a premium for both sides, Leeds were limited to efforts from distance, with Rodolph Austin striking more than once over the crossbar. But despite having been kept relatively quiet during the early exchanges, Owls dangerman Jermaine Johnson needed just one bite at the cherry to score his fourth
goal in four games. A long punt forward from Kirkland was flicked on by Jeremy Helan into the path of the pace ace, who applied a delicate first time finish over Paddy Kenny to give Wednesday the advantage. Leeds, though, aimed for an immediate response and almost found a leveller through Ross McCormack. The former Cardiff man struck a fierce free kick over the wall that seemed destined for the back of the net but Miguel Llera retreated to the line and headed behind for a corner. Moments before the interval, Jermaine Johnson was causing further problems, as the Jamaican found space in behind the Leeds backline before squaring for Leroy Lita, who directed his shot on target but Kenny was able to gather first time. The Whites introduced El-Hadji Diouf for the second period but it was strike partner Morison who could and should have equalised four minutes after the restart. A slip by Anthony Gardner on the turf allowed Morison in on goal but Reda Johnson thwarted the hosts with a perfectly timed challenge inside the area. Leeds continued to turn the screw and were almost rewarded when McCormack hit a piledriver from distance but Kirkland parried wide at full stretch. Diouf then saw a snapshot deflected past the post before the pressure paid off on 63 minutes. McCormack delivered a pacy cross from the right and Varney climbed high to head home off the underside of the crossbar. Six minutes later, the same duo combined to put Leeds in front. McCormack showed some neat footwork to find space down the right and feed Varney, whose firm header was planted into the far corner and out of Kirkland’s reach. Varney’s second prompted a late charge from Wednesday and substitute Steven Howard and Lita both went close but the home side held on to post a much-needed win. Leeds: Kenny, Drury, Pearce, Green, Austin, Morison (White 60), Varney, Warnock (Tonge 85), Norris (Diouf 46), Byram, McCormack Unused substitutes: Ashdown, Poleon, Somma, Hall
JONES RUE DEFENSIVE LAPSES SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones rued two defensive lapses that allowed Leeds to beat Wednesday in Saturday’s early kick-off at Elland Road. Former Owls loanee Luke Varney planted two second half headers to overcome Jermaine Johnson’s opener and secure victory in the Yorkshire derby. But Jones was unhappy with his side’s defending, saying: “We’ve let ourselves down today because you can’t allow free headers like that. Whether it was tiredness or just a lack of concentration, I don’t know, but we’ve come away with nothing when we should be taking something home today. “We’ve played a lot of football in a short period of time and sometimes that can catch up with you. Maybe that has happened to us today.” Jones had no argument with Varney’s first goal, a header that bounced over the line from the underside of the crossbar. He said: “The linesman has given it so he must have been sure. That was the decision he made so we will abide by it.” Owls goalscorer Jermaine Johnson withdrew just after the restart and Jones revealed a knock to the knee dictated the Jamaican’s absence. Giles Coke also came off injured. Jones added: “JJ took a kick on the knee and we said to him at half time, just give us what you can and we’ll take it from there. “But he was feeling it almost straight away so we had to take him off. “Giles is also injured so we will assess them both tomorrow and see where we are.”
