FIRST ACTS ANNOUNCED FOR TRAMLINES FESTIVAL 2013 Music fans will not be disappointed as Tramlines announces one of its best line-ups yet. The UK’s biggest inner city festival, Tramlines, returns to Sheffield for its fifth year on Friday 19 July to Sunday 21 July with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. Regular line-up announcements will be made over the coming weeks. Confirmations already include: Lianne La Havas, David Rodigan MBE, Toddla T Sound, Maurice Fulton Theo Parrish, New Young Pony Club, Slow Club, Duke Dumont, The Invisible, 2.54, Friends, Lulu James, Jim Jones Revue, Veronica Falls and Dutch Uncles. Mercury Prize nominated Lianne La Havas heads up the Devonshire Green Main Stage on Saturday, joined by
Dutch Uncles, Friends, Lulu James and Eliza and the Bear. Jim Jones Revue, Slow Club, The Crookes, Veronica Falls, Theme Park, Peggy Sue, Teleman and Everly Pregnant Brothers have been added to the bill on Sunday with Sunday’s headliner still to be announced. Continuing their commitment to showcasing the best up and coming talent, Tramlines has linked up with BBC Introducing. BBC Introducing supports unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar talent – two acts will open the Main Stage on Saturday. This year Barker’s Pool will be filled with street theatre and a new stage (Stage Two) will be on Rockingham Street showcasing a mix of leftfield and alternative artists. Yet another strong line-up has been confirmed over two days including New Young Pony Club, The
Invisible, 2.54, Sky Larkin, Cheatahs, Thumpers, PINS, Menace Beach, Rolo Tomassi, Tall Ships, Wet Nuns, Lemuria, TTNG and Kagoule. Steel City DJ and producer Toddla T returns to Tramlines with an expanded dance music programme and his new Toddla T Sound concept. Moving to a bigger venue and almost doubling its capacity, the expanded Toddla T line up will include Maurice Fulton, Forgemasters, Chris Duckenfield, Theo Parrish, Stylo G, David Rodigan MBE, Dub Phizix & Strategy, Dre Skull, DJ EZ and of course Toddla T Sound. Many acts are still to be announced for the festival which across the city will feature hundreds of artists in 60 venues including four outdoor stages. Additions already include Duke
Dumont, B. Traits, Lanterns on the Lake, Alessi’s Ark and Fossil Collective Last year’s Tramlines saw over 150,000 people turn Sheffield into one massive festival over three days, creating the feel and atmosphere that rivals any green field festival site. Sarah Nulty, Festival Director at Tramlines said: “We are really proud of this year’s line up and I think fans will agree that we’ve come back stronger than ever. We’ve got loads more in the pipeline to announce. Every year we put on literally hundreds of acts across the whole of the city so this is just the start. “A few changes this year, the biggest being the introduction of a one off door charge of £6 per day, but we still have loads of free music and areas for people to enjoy. We’ve increased the capacity for
Toddla, added a new stage and really enhanced our fringe. “Tramlines really is a festival like no other. We give music fans a chance to see their favourite artists for just £6 a day. I’d say we are the best value festival out there and I can’t wait for the festival weekend now – things are really gearing up.” 60 of the city’s music venues and performance spaces will be pulling out the stops staging hundreds of artists across Sheffield. Devonshire Green’s Main Stage and the new and improved Stage Two will be home to some of the most exciting artists around. 2013 is expected to attract a greater number of fans from outside the city as it steps up another notch to become a destination event for music-lovers from across the country.

Plug is proud to announce that Toots & the Maytals will be playing on Thursday August 1st. Described as ‘one of the true architects of Reggae’, Toots & the Maytals have been working together since the 1960s, and are a long established legend in the world of Reggae, even being credited with having coined the term on their 1968 single ‘Do The Reggay’. Originally called The Maytals, the band are considered legends of ska and reggae music for their unique sound that blends the genres with a combination of gospel, soul and rock. Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert grew up singing gospel music in a church choir before moving to Jamaica. It was there he met Henry ‘Releigh’ Gordon and Nathaniel ‘Jerry’ McCarthy and formed the group. They released their first album in 1963 and became an instant success. It was 1967 when the band officially changed their name to Toots & the Maytals and throughout the rest of the 60s recorded hit songs such as ‘Do the Reggay,’ ‘Pressure Drop,’ and ’5446 was my number.’ The group was featured in one of reggae’s greatest breakthrough events, the film The Harder They Come on which they featured on the soundtrack with Jimmy Cliff. Vanity Fair named it one of their Top 10 Best Soundtracks of all time. Toots & the Maytals were awarded a Grammy in 2005 for True Love, where their classic songs were re-recorded alongside artists such as Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, No Doubt and The Roots. They remain touring and recording with huge success.

FINE FOOD AREA JOINS THORESBY MARKET Visitors to Thoresby Market in north Nottinghamshire later this month are being treated to a tasty new fine food attraction. The market on Sunday 28th April will include a special area dedicated to fine food and drink. Run by East Midlands Fine Foods on behalf of the market organisers, the area will feature a selection of stalls selling a range of specialist produce such as Mexican food, jams and chutneys, curry pastes, smoothies, local and exotic meats, olive oils and potted beef. It is the first time the fine food area is being staged, but it could become part of the market’s calendar of events. Thoresby Market, held at Thoresby Park in Sherwood Forest, is the largest outdoor Sunday market within the East Midlands and attracts visitors from Nottinghamshire, Sheffield and south Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Derbyshire. It has been running for more than 25 years, and features over 100 stalls offering a range of products from household items, jewellery, craft items, to clothing and much more. The fine food area will sit amongst the regular market, which runs from 8am to 3pm. The pilot project is expected to attract up to 20 specialist food and drink retailers. Any food and drink producers interested in taking part are being urged to contact the organisers on 0115 9758810 as soon as possible to check stall availability. East Midlands Fine Foods is operated by trade organisation The Food and Drink Forum, which is a not-for-profit organisation launched in 1998 to champion the growth and sustainability of the food and drink industry in the region. Car parking at Thoresby Market is £1.50, with blue badge holders admitted free of charge. For more information visit www.thoresbysundaymarket.co.uk

5 TIPS TO BOOST YOUR MOOD http://www.ageuk.org.uk/health-wellbeing/ keeping-your-body-healthy/5-tips-to-boostyour-mood/
Boosting your mood and helping yourself feel more positive is a great thing to do, no matter how tough life can be. It may be that something as simple as singing along to a favourite piece of music or watching an episode of a classic comedy does the trick. Or, if you’re feeling lonely, spending time with others - especially children or animals - can help to bring some light back into your life. We asked psychologist Susan Quilliam for her top 5tips on how to lift your spirits... 1. Smile. ‘When you smile it triggers moodboosting hormones in the brain. So even if you don’t feel happy, put a smile on your face and you may soon start to feel more positive.’ 2. Keep busy. ‘It doesn’t matter whether you tidy up the garden, wash the dishes or go for a walk - any activity that helps to break up your routine and gives you a sense of achievement will do the trick.’ 3. Talk to someone. ‘It doesn’t matter whether you meet up face to face, talk on the phone, chat online or use Skype, connecting with other people helps to bring you out of yourself.’ 4. Help others. ‘Research shows that helping other people will help to lift your mood. So do a favour for a friend, donate to charity or volunteer.’ 5. Live in the moment. ‘If you’re feeling low, try to regulate your breathing and pay attention to what you can see, hear and feel at the present moment. This will help you to feel calm and bring you back into emotional balance.’

TOP TIPS FOR STOPPING MARKETING TEXTS, CALLS AND EMAILS
If you are receiving texts, telephone calls or emails that you haven’t asked for (unsolicited) you can do things to stop them. Unsolicited means you haven’t given permission for the company to contact you in this way or you’re not given the option to unsubscribe. What can you do to stop receiving unsolicited marketing materials. Unsubscribe or tell the company to stop You can write to the company and ask them to remove you from their marketing and mailing lists. Be aware that it may take a few weeks from when you contact the company before you stop hearing from them. It is unlawful to send unsolicited direct marketing e-mails or text messages to you, unless you have previously told them its ok to do so. If there is an existing customer relationship between you and the company, they can send you unsolicited messages about similar products and services, as long as you are given the option to refuse it. Usually, emails will have an option at the bottom of the email to unsubscribe from their mailing list. In theory you shouldn’t get unsolicited texts because you have to consent to receive them in the first place. WELCOME to the April edition of The Wedding Guide. Well it looks like the spring has finally arrived and we are actually enjoying some sunshine at last, but whatever the weather I am sure whatever you are planning your big day it will be special. A Spring wedding, a Summer marquee, a Church or Civil ceremony, whatever you have chosen to celebrate your wedding our guide is here to help you with news, views and helpful advice. This is an interactive guide; we want to hear your stories. I haven’t received recently any news, photos or requests yet from any of you brides out there so come on don’t be shy. I want to hear your stories, your dilemmas, your highs and your lows. If you have some advice to pass on, please let us know. I want to hear all about it and so do the other readers. Send your success stories, or photographs of your special day to mandy@mercurynewspaper.co.uk Most of the service providers on this page say we have put them firmly on the map, by being part of this monthly feature and opened up a whole new market, so come on all you brides to be there must be someone featured in this guide who has got what you are looking for. The average wedding is said to cost £20.000
and I can imagine how easy it is to get carried away to reach that amount. Obviously you don’t have to spend that much as some venues are offering the whole package for under £2000, so it can be as extravagant or as intimate as you want. Moving onto our pages this week, many of our advertisers in this feature have been in the business for a number of years and can offer you experience, value and customer service, but mainly their aim is to help make your day the most memorable special occasion. I have had the pleasure of working along side most of these people and have witnessed their dedication, passion and commitment to making your day special. Venues are generally one of the first things on your list to choose as this will be the main focus of the event. They are also booked up well in advance, up to 3 years in some cases, so it’s never too early to view them. Large, small, grand or intimate each wedding is different and each venue can offer different things depending on your requirements. It is always good to view a couple of venues you have in mind and go to view them, more than once if need be. The proprietor will be more than happy to show you around and talk through your requirements until you are happy with your choice. The Sitwell Arms at Renishaw are proud
sponsors of our Wedding Guide and they provide quality facilities at affordable prices. It is a beautiful 18th century coaching Inn with beautiful surroundings that are perfect for the photographs. The Old Rectory in Handsworth is set in beautiful surroundings, whether you want a buffet or a banquet this venue can cater for 5 for 150 guests. Looking for a venue with a difference? The Kiveton and Wales Parish Hall offer you the whole package for one affordable cost, so check them out. Onto bridal wear now and Michelle at Loveona Bridal (formerly Lilly’s) on Neepsend will offer you a friendly welcome to her beautiful showroom. You will enter a client and leave as a friend. A lot of personal touches and thought has gone into this venture, and you will feel immediately at ease with the friendly professional manner in which Michelle treats her guests. The next Wedding Guide, will be out on Wednesday 29th May. Good luck with the planning, and don’t forget to call our experts for friendly advice and help, and tell them you saw them in the Mercury. See you next month…..Mandy

APOLLO’S COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT CONTINUES AT UNITY GYM Apollo have continued to help in the local Community by helping and working with Unity Gym to provide them with a Consultation Office and Reception for the newly refurbished Gym. Local resident Saeed from Exeter Drive S3, who runs the Unity Gym, contacted Julie Paylor, Senior Resident Liaison Officer for Apollo (Part of the Keepmoat Group) and asked if they could help. Julie Paylor, Senior Resident Liaison Officer was more than happy to help out and continue with their Community Involvement. Apollo had their operatives working in the Gym to build a Reception and a Consultation Office, they have also hung mirrors, provided a drinking water station plus lots more. We thought it was a worthwhile request; Unity Gym is a good example of Community Engagement and was pleased that we could help, the gym is involved with young people and young adults. People travel from all areas of Sheffield to use the Gym, youths off the Lansdowne & Hanover Estates where Apollo are working attend the gym, one of the young members said ‘If we didn’t have the gym to relieve my stress and get the support I got I would still be on the road, I am thankful we have Saeed to help us’. The gym is supported by a number of voluntary organisations and is recognised as directly impacting on lowering and managing community tensions within in the gang and serious youth violence in Sheffield. Julie Paylor Senior Resident Liaison Officer and Site Manager Mick Sheard carried out a Healthy Lifestyle Workshop during the Easter School holidays. The event was well attended by youths off the Lansdowne and Hanover Estates and the Community of Sheffield. Mini Competitions were held, with prizes & certificates for the winners, everyone who took part received a medal. The youths discussed with Mick on the best way to achieve results, how to eat healthly, which proteins to use, and the best ways to train. It was another great success working with Saeed and his team and has enabled us to continue with our great relationship and good involvement with the local residents and tenants off the estates’.

FAIR DEAL FOR BRITAIN’S PUBS CAMRA has strongly welcomed Government plans to stop large pub companies damaging Britain’s pubs by charging pub licensees high rents alongside inflated beer prices. A new powerful watchdog will prevent large pub companies from taking excessive profits from their pubs at the expense of licensees and pub goers. The Government is also consulting on introducing “Guest Beer” and “Market Rent Only” options. These would provide the opportunity for licensees to partially or fully opt out of tied arrangements combined with an independently
assessed market rent. Mike Benner, CAMRA’s Chief Executive, commented: “It is fantastic news that the Government is pushing ahead with these desperately needed reforms. Introducing Guest Beer and Market Rent Only options will deliver fair market rents and ensure licensees are able to buy beer at competitive prices. These reforms, coupled with an industry watchdog with real teeth, are urgently needed to help safeguard the future of many thousands of valued community pubs.” “The large pub companies have been given repeated opportunities to deliver effective self regulation but have failed to do so. CAMRA is delighted that after nine years of self regulation failure the Government has decided to act.”

Stannington Training Band, will also take to the stage with a short programme showcasing the up and coming talent of its young and developing brass players. The concert starts at 7.30pm. WALKING ON SUNSHINE MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Well, here’s hoping the sun will have his hat on come this weekend. It seems a long time in the planning but this Sunday April 28th sees the Jane Tomlinson Walk for All Peak District Walking Event. The Cash for Kids team and myself will be walking for our charity raising money to help needy children across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. After the wind, rain and cold we endured last year and such a harsh snowy few months, I’m convinced it’s going to be a beautiful spring day. Endless sessions on the treadmill at the gym have prepared me, as best they can. I even got away without blisters last year as well! There’s still time to get involved and to come and join us as and the Tomlinson family, as they continue their work for all sorts of causes. It’s well worth a day out to catch some of the most stunning scenery which we have on our doorsteps. You can bring along friends, work colleagues or family members and take part in the course which suits you - 5 miles (suitable for all ages and family members), 14 miles and a 25 mile hike. Food and refreshments will be laid on at the start and finish in Hope, near Castleton too. Simply call Becky or Katie during office hours on 0114 209 1100 and I look forward to seeing you there. Talking of sunshine, if you’ve been listening to Glenn’s new Breakfast Show, and to Nick and Dave through the day, you will of course have heard by now that we’re getting ready to give away another luxury cruise holiday. This time it’s a Mediterranean cruise for you and somebody special in your life. Simply keep listening in for more news to come in the days ahead. Keep it Magic, Trevor

DONT MISS OUT SIGN UP TO BE A TRAMLINER NOW! Tramlines Festival is encouraging music fans to sign up to become a Tramliner now! The UK’s biggest inner city festival returns to Sheffield for its fifth year on Friday 19 July to Sunday 21 July with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. Loyal fans of Sheffield’s music festival have been signing up by the thousands to stay ahead of the crowd with up to date information about this year’s festival and exclusive access to weekend tickets. Over 5,000 people are already signed up as Tramliners. Sarah Nulty, Festival Director at Tramlines said: “We totally value the crowds who have made Tramlines what it is. That is why we are encouraging our loyal fans to sign up to become a Tramliner and get the inside track on the festival build up, as well as a chance to get a discounted weekend ticket for just £15.00.” Weekend tickets are limited and only available to those who have signed up. In order to make this year’s festival possible, for the first time ever, there will be a £6 daily door charge to access the main stages and music venues (the ones who usually charge a fee to enter their venues). With the enormous diversity of music and activities on offer, and still loads of free areas like Weston Park, Folk Forest, Cathedral, Tudor Square and much more, Tramlines 2013 is amazing value for money. Sarah continued: “We have had a fantastic response so far with thousands signing up but we want to make sure people don’t miss out. That is why we are encouraging as many people as possible to sign up. We are just weeks away from our first line up announcement – things are really gearing up for this year’s festival. “We have worked really hard to deliver a fantastic diverse line up again, and we are confident people will continue to support the festival. We know that at just £6 a day or £15 for Tramliner weekend tickets we are one of the most competitively priced festivals out there. Signing up to be a Tramliner just helps us give something back to all of the amazing people who have helped make Tramlines Festival a success.” Festival goers can sign-up to become a Tramliner at www. tramlines-org.uk to get access to a limited number of weekend tickets, priced at just £15.00 for all three days of music. Other than this, there’ll be no presale tickets available, with all day tickets on sale on the door at the venues and stages. Tramliners will also be the first to hear about new additions to this year’s line-up, as well as getting access to Tramliners-only VIP ticket giveaways and competitions from artists, friends of the festival and sponsors.
VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and all of the money required to run the service is raised by our volunteers. This week we held a collection on the Tanyard Shopping Centre at Wickersley in Rotherham and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who donated to help us raise £164.26. Also thank you to Lucy, Jonathan, Mick, Barry, Lee, Andy and Sarah who held the collection tins. It may not seem a very big amount but every little really does help towards the costs of keeping the station broadcasting. The financial climate is difficult and understandably people are having to prioritise their spends and so what’s left for charity can be less than before. That’s why I’d like to ask you to consider giving just a couple of seconds of your time to raise money for Radio Nightingale without actually spending anything. First when you’re searching on the internet, give a try to www. radionightingale.easysearch.org. uk instead of your usual search engine. It’s powered by some of the biggest search engines, Yahoo! and Bing, so the results you get are really good. Every time you make a search from here Radio Nightingale gets half a penny. Have a think about how many searches you do a day or a week and see how that could add up. It really is free to use; the money to Radio Nightingale comes from the sponsored links on the site. Maybe set it as your homepage so you can find it easily. Or if you’re shopping on the internet try www.easyfundraising. org.uk/radionightingale. This is a collection of thousands of retailers who’ve all agreed to give a percentage of their profits to Radio Nightingale because you make a purchase. The cost you pay is exactly the same as you would if you bought direct from the retailers website, in fact once you’ve selected your retailer from the easyfundraising site you’ll be transferred to their normal website to complete your purchasing. There’s no compromise in your security, no limits on the retailers range and no additional costs. In fact, a lot of the retailers make special offers through the easyfundraising website, so you might even save a little. Plus there are thousands of retailers in the site, some of them you’ll never have heard of before but they offer a fantastic range of products which will be real inspiration for gifts for any occasion. Please, if you can, have a look at these websites. They don’t cost you anything but they do raise a little bit more money to help Radio Nightingale make time pass a little quicker for those in hospital. Thank you.

TRAMLINES 2013
If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
live PREVIEW
Words by KT Evans
It’s back and hell have Tramlines 2013 got a treat in store for each and everybody this time round. Back in its fifth year and announcing it is to be “…bigger and better than ever before…” there may be a few minor changes to Sheffield’s finest summer event (ok ok we may have to pay a small ticket fee this year but just wait until you see the line-up ) keep 19th – 21st July free as we guarantee you won’t want to miss this. Similar to previous years and still being held across tonnes of different venues in and around Sheffield city centre, Tramlines 2013 is all about showcasing home grown live talent to internationally renounced stars. Headlining the main stage, Lianna Le Havas. An English folk and soul singer, the talented songwriter was nominated for the BBC Sound of 2012 poll along with landing herself an iTunes Album of The Year award for her debut release “Is Your Love big Enough?” David Rodigan MBA and BBC 1Xtra pioneer will also be joining us in Sheffield for Tramlines, a DJ with enough cool cred points to his name to make your eyes weep with joy. No seriously you just wait… Ibiza favourite and DJ superstar Toddla T Sound is set to perform this summers’ event. Having performed around Sheffield throughout his explosive live career, this Sheffield born trendy will no doubt bring the party to Devonshire Green this July. Running alongside the Sheffield theme of this years’ event, high flyers Wet Nuns have been announced alongside The Crookes and Rolo Tomassi. Bigger and bolder with every set they perform, Rolo Tomassi are all about delivering on a colossal scale with electric bass lines and fierce live vocals as courtesy of Eva Spence. Last year they smashed the City Hall Stage…let’s see what they have in store for us this time round. New Young Pony Club alongside Slow Club have also been announced for main stage acts of Tramlines 2013. NME favourites and alternative indie cult band, the Sheffield folk duo need little introduction. Having supported acts such as KT Tunstall and Florence & The Machine, whether you’ve seen them live or simply read about them in national music magazines, we suggest you don’t give Slow Club a miss. 2.54, Friends and Veronica Falls have also been announced for Tramlines 2013 along Sheffield’s Everly Pregnant Brothers, Jim Jones Revue and Duke Dumont. More info can be found on www. tramlines.org.uk.

HIT THE DECK 21/04/13 NOTTINGHAM
REVIEW Words by KT Evans
Hit The Deck…you’ve done it again. Not only have you given us one of the most severe Jagermesiter hangovers we’ve had in quite some time, you also delivered a one day event we shall coin as the best independent festival we’ve been to…well since last year’s event anyway. Spread out over four venues throughout Nottingham City Centre, Hit The Deck 2013 not only safeguarded itself as the premium alternative festival but also set the standard ridiculously high for its competitors throughout the upcoming summers events. Each hosing a versatile line-up to cater for even the most selective of musical tastes, Rock City, Rescue Rooms, Stealth and The Forum were a buzz of pop punk, progressive hardcore, acoustic and heavy rock, kicking processions off at midday. Holding their own at one of the day’s earliest slots, Mallory Knox not only lived up to their hugely anticipated name, but also won over a fair few supporters in the process. Mikey Chapman is every bit the showman we expected, and seeming not to be phased by a main stage performance, oozes the ability to be headlining the festival next year. A massive highlight of the day and one which we absolutely were not crying to (total lies), Devil Sold His Soul’s set in The Forum represented singer Edward’s penultimate performance. Announcing he is to leave the band in only a handful of weeks, the combination of enormous riffs alongside a gigantic light show carried with it waves of emotion only a band as passionate as this could harbour. Flipping the coin and indicating the versatile nature of the day, melodic hardcore clan Stick To Your Guns are awarded premium mosh pit instigators of the year. Although we’ll forgive him for being a tad “preachy” in places, it’s so hard to deny the ear splitting attack the US pack’s frontman Jesse Barnett has in the depth of performance. Eagerly anticipated and teenage girl heart throbs, Never Shout Never on Rock City Main stage served us a piece of cheese pie within their half hour long set . Although maybe not one for the dudes at Hit The Deck due to their sweetheart lyrics and overwhelming sense the entire group will never be able to overcome their broken hearts, hell we can’t say it wasn’t a certified winner for the chicks in the crowd. Every bit as catchy as we remembered, headliners Don Broco’s set did come across a little bit samey as their UK headline tour dates (we’ve seen the walk, we’ve done the walk, we’re a little bit tired of the walk now) and total opposites to Bleed From Within, our headliners of the entire event. Twisting torment and anger into each and every song they performed, the Scottish five piece personified all that is Hit The Deck…awesome.
round-up by stuart renton
The International Space Naming Agency has announced this week that it’s fed up with people abusing Uranus. Apparently, Uranus is the butt of everyone’s jokes and the Agency has had enough. So, to stop Uranus from getting a real pounding, they’ve come up with a few suggestions to rename the planet to something a bit more appropriate. So, you can now log on to their website to suggest a more suitable name, and the ones you can chose from are taken from many languages. There’s Arzole (named after the famous Swedish astronomer), Buutcracke (after the African scientist who discovered dirt), and Stretch-Rektum (after the Finnish man and wife team who invented Dogging). I think it’s nice the Agency is trying to clean up the image of Uranus. After all, it’s had a bad crack over the past few years. Yes, sorry. That’s about the quality of this week’s column, I’m afraid. After last week’s political diatribe, I thought I’d bring things back down to earth by talking about Uranus. Personally, I’m happy with things as they are and I don’t want to see someone come sneakily from behind to fiddle about with Uranus while I’m not watching. If you’re into nature then there’s plenty to see on these warmer dark nights around Sheffield. There’s the heart-warming cries of “Where’s me Knickers?” from the Blue-Breasted Tit, which shows a true return to summer in South Yorkshire, and the trees are littered with condoms, which is always a lovely thing to see if you’re looking for some signs of wildlife. Looking skyward, we’ve just seen the back of the Lyrid (golden) shower
and I’ll be gazing up at the stars later in the week as Uranus is riding high on the shaft of Sagittarius, which always puts on a good show… And speaking of stars riding high, I see po-faced mega witch Sharon Osborne is on her way back to the UK (on her broomstick) for the next season of X Factor. This must be the final nail in the show’s coffin for Osborne’s reputedly signed a deal worth two million quid, which means she can afford a bit more surgery before the show starts. Lucky us! Ozzie Osborne said he’d recently been in a very dark place. Well I’d be in a very dark place if she came on to me while the lights were still on. Suddenly, there’s not enough alcohol on earth to erase those memories… I’m having post-traumatic stress disorder just thinking about it… It’d be like having sex with a joint of beef wrapped in a condom… Ugh. Imagination overload! Need to purge. Quick, think bunnies and candy floss... Bunnies and candy floss… Ahh, there we go, evil thoughts fading… But talking of doing unsavoury things, someone asked me the other day if I wanted to get paid four thousand pounds to be in my own online porn video. It’d just be me, of course, doing the act solo (ie no one would be there to give me a hand) and I wondered: how many of you would spend an afternoon doing what we all vehemently deny doing in the privacy of our own beds / showers / work cubicles, in front of a camera for four grand? That’s a hell of a lot of money, right? Well, obviously, being the very model of sobriety and the upstanding pillar of society, I said no, but I did give it a second thought. And a third actually. So, how many of you would be up for it? That’s something to think about after you’ve finished with my column. More smut news next week.

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
This week, I fear I have been duped into parting with money for little reward..... I recently purchased an item of tackle which promised to make zig rig fishing much easier, much less complicated, and would improve my presentation. Hmm......I’m not convinced. I won’t name the company, but it’s one of many zig ‘kits’ available in tackle stores, and as zig fishing is an area I’m not hugely confident in, I thought I’d give it a try, take some pictures and write it up for a website I contribute to. If you don’t know, zig rigs are designed to offer a bait ‘up in the water’ at depths from a few inches off the bottom, to a few inches below the surface in the hope of intercepting passing fish. As with any aspect of angling, there is a whole market which has sprung up around this method, and in truth, much of it means over complicating rigs for the sake of a few quid for the manufacturers. So did it work? It did work, but not without much cussing, confusion and in truth, unnecessary angst as I fiddled with a myriad of tiny silicon bits, specialised ‘tools’ (which once lost render the kit unusable) and super sharp finger slicing packaging. Would I use it again? No, I’ll revert back to tying my own and either side hooking, hair rigging or gluing a bait to the shank of the hook. I know it will float, I know it will stay there, and I know I haven’t spent £5.99 for the privilege! Whilst messing about with the above named item, it got me thinking about other products which, in my opinion are nothing more than money makers exploiting clever marketing and good reputation. A boilie cutter to chop boilies perfectly in half? My Knife does that, or if I want something different, I’ll even use my thumbnail. Designed to save time when baiting up you say? I have plenty of time on the bank once the rods are in....I’ll amuse myself with some boilie sculpture thank you... I once reviewed a product designed to dispense boilies stops; a ‘pen’ if you like, where the top was depressed to force the stops up the inside of the ‘pen’ until they emerged at the business end ready to be inserted into the hair rig loop. At this point, the ‘pen’ was briskly snapped away to release the boilie stop.... I hooked my fingers twice before I gave up and reverted to the old fashioned way..... So why are these items produced? Market forces dictate that ‘disciples’ of the brand will buy the latest product regardless of whether they need it, or whether it works, or whether they can do it without. That is the result of extremely clever, competitive marketing, exposure and word of mouth on the bank which drives anglers to buy the latest ‘must have’ item; this is the darker side of the angling trade...one which takes advantage of good reputation at the expense of you and me.....think about it before you rush to buy the patented ‘hands free bait shaper magic fish catcher guaranteed honest in dayglo orange with added pizazz’....it may not be all it seems.....

Saturday: 3.45 Quevega 4.25 Our Conor UK TV racing Saturday: Sandown: 2.05 Bet365 Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 0-145, 2m 3f 110yds: This looks to be a highly competitive race. I venture to suggest that, if making the trip over from Ireland, Northern Alliance would be a very intriguing and interesting runner who could be well handicapped based on his run behind Final Approach at Leopardstown back in January 2011. Since then Tony Martin’s inmate has run exclusively over fences (including some PTP runs) and now reverts to hurdles for this raid from across the water. However there are several of the home brigade who have been going well recently also. Chief among these are(in alphabetical order): Araldur; First in the Queue; Guards Chapel; Home Run; Minella Forfitness; Native Gallery; Old Tricks; Open Day; Oscar Magic; Paintball; Princely Player; Ranjaan; Shotavodka; and Veloce. Of these preference is for Oscar Magic who won well in a good time at Haydock three weeks ago, but do also take note if Northern Alliance should happen to turn up. 2.40 Bet365.com Celebration Chase, Grade 2, 5yo+, 2m: Tom George’s Rody is the suggestion for this one. He looks to be progressing on the right lines and, although well beaten in the Grand Annual at the Festival, his four other runs this year read 2111. Last time out he beat King Edmund by 2 ½ lengths, conceding him 8lbs, and that one has since franked the form by winning at Wincanton last Sunday where he beat Elenika by 3 lengths. There are plenty of dangerous opponents however. Oiseau de Nuit, Sanctuaire, Wishfull Thinking, Tataniano, Tanks for That, Sire de Grugy, French Opera and Overturn all catch the eye in an open contest. 3.15 Bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes, Group 3, 4yo+, 1m 2f 7yds: This is another hotly contested race. The selection is Sir Michael Stoute’s Eagles Peak who gets a narrow vote over Roger Varian’s Ektihaam and Clive Brittain’s Semayyel. Others that catch the eye are: Thomas Chippendale; Light Heavy; Chill the Kite; and Dick Doughtywylie. 3.50 Bet365 Gold Cup Chase (Handicap), Grade 3, 5yo+, 3m 5f 110yds: I often find this a very tricky race to call although if memory serves me right I did manage to find Tidal Bay last year. This year looks to be just as competitive as ever with several top stables having runners. Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls are both represented and both look to hold very good chances with TrioloD’Alene and Michel le Bon respectively. I think this will go to one of these trainers and have a slight preference for top weight Michel le Bon who gets the vote. There are a bakers’ dozen or more other dangers however of whom the stand-outs would seem to be: Saint Are; Mr Moss; Quentin Collonges; Major Malarkey; Balthazar King; Quiscover
Fontaine; Same Difference; Quinz; Fredo; Hadrian’s Approach; and Well Refreshed. Ripon: 2.20 Attheraces.com William Buick Exclusive Blog Handicap, 4yo+, 0-90, 1m: Top of the pops for me here is Dean Ivory’s Snow Trooper who won well at Windsor in fast time on 15 April. He is obviously fit and in form and should take all the beating. If he doesn’t show up the first reserve position is contested by Lord Aeryn, Ginger Jack and Myboyalfie with the former just getting the nod. Others that catch the eye are: Amaze; Ewell Place; Jo’Burg; Mont Ras; and Dubai Dynamo. 2.55: At The Races Handicap, 4yo+, 0-105, 2m: Mark Johnston’s Scatter Dice looks to hold a decent chance in this. He seemed to me to be improving at the tail end of last year and could still have more improvement to come over this distance. Chief among the dangers could be Alan King’s Ardlui who finished off last year with a soft ground win at Newmarket and who has been kept going over hurdles through the winter. Next best in my book are (in order of preference): Manyriverstocross; Lexington Bay; and Flying Cross while another fairly recent winner with a reasonable chance is Alan Swinbank’s Lady Kashan. Finally, Mick Channon’s course and distance winner Montaff is not without a chance if able to re-capture his best form. Selection Summary: Sandown: 2.05 Oscar Magic and Northern Alliance, if absent Princely Player then Shotavodka, Home Run, Paintball 2.40 Rody, if absent Wishfull Thinking then Sanctuaire, Oiseau de Nuit,Tataniano, Tanks for That, Sire de Grugy 3.15 Eagles Peak, if absent Ektihaam then Semayyel, Thomas Chippendale, Light Heavy, Chill the Kite, Dick Doughtywylie 3.50 Michel le Bon, if absent Triolo D’Alene then Saint Are, Mr Moss, Quentin Collonges, Major Malarkey, Balthazar King etc. Ripon: 2.20 Snow Trooper, if absent Lord Aeryn then Ginger Jack, Myboyalfie, Amaze, Ewell Place, Jo’Burg 2.55 Scatter Dice, if absent Ardlui then Manyriverstocross, Lexington Bay, Flying Cross, Lady Kashan, Montaff

Millers & Rovers News 2012-13
AGARD EDGES MILLERS CLOSER TO PROMOTION The Millers edged themselves closer to promotion with a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle at Home Park to make it four consecutive wins in nPower League Two. Kieran Agard made it three goals in as many games as he became the hero by scoring the only goal of the game in a tightly contested encounter in Devon. Steve Evans opted to retain the same starting eleven that earned a vital 2-0 win over Bradford City in West Yorkshire on Tuesday night, with David Noble and Daniel Nardiello returning to the bench in place of Mitchell Rose. The hosts were still looking to cement their place in nPower League Two going into Saturday’s game despite being four points clear of the drop zone at the start of the fixture and started the first half brightly. Onismor Bhasera’s fashioned the first chance of the game with his neat run and cross from the left-hand side that required a stern Claude Davis clearance to ensure former Millers frontman Reuben Reid was denied an early sight of Scott Shearer’s goal. John Sheridan’s arrival in Devon has seen the Pilgrims adopt a much more attacking approach and this was evident when Joe Bryan’s deep free-kick was attacked by a host of Argyle players, only to whistle past a stretching Curtis Nelson at the back post. Kari Arnason enjoyed a two year spell at Home Park and became renowned for his ability to shoot from distance. The Icelandic midfielder tried to emulate that feat in Millers colours with his shot from distance on eight minutes, but his speculative effort went harmlessly wide of the target. The hosts might have taken the lead on 25 minutes had Paris Cowan-Hall’s intricate through ball not evaded Andres Gurrieri’s charge into the box and been claimed by the onrushing Shearer, who did well to claim the ball on the penalty spot and avert the danger. Evans’ men seemed to settle into the game as the first half progressed and managed to test Jake Cole five minutes before the break. A tireless run from Agard earned the Millers a free-kick 25 yards from goal which resulted in Plymouth stopper making an astute save from Michael O’Connor’s curling effort. The best chance of the opening 45 minutes fell to the Millers a minute before it was scheduled to end when Ben Pringle’s cushioned header picked out an unmarked Lee Frecklington in the box, who was denied by a magnificent save by Cole at his near post. The visitors tried to break the deadlock once more in the dying seconds when O’Connor laid off a freekick to Arnason 20 yards from goal who saw his low piledriver well blocked by a disciplined Argyle wall. The Millers started the second half with the same attacking intensity they had established in the minutes prior to the break and almost took the lead immediately after the restart. Their first opportunity arose when a long Arnason throw from the right was helped on to Agard by Revell who received the ball back from the winger, before unleashing a shot which whistled inches wide of the far post. Evans’ men continued to press and came close again after Arnason gave Pringle the ball in a central position, before the midfielder’s pinpoint cross found Agard in the area who headed just wide of Cole’s goal from ten yards. However, the hosts threatened when the dangerous Bhasera reached the byline on the left flank, before delivering a teasing cross that ex-Millers frontman Reid headed narrowly wide. Reid, who topped the goalscoring charts during his time with the Millers at Don Valley, continued to look menacing in front of goal and came close again seconds later when another mazy run and cross by Bhasera saw him evade the challenge of O’Connor, before finding Reid in the area who failed to hit the target from 12 yards following a clever dummy by Gurrieri. Bhasera and Bryan combined well on numerous occasions to deliver a series of crosses from the left that the Millers defence had to be alert to deal with. The most telling of these came on 68 minutes when Bryan’s deep centre narrowly overshot Nelson on the back post who had risen above Craig Morgan. The visitors did break the deadlock on 75 minutes when Joe Skarz delivered a deep free-kick towards the far post, where Johnny Mullins knocked the ball down into the path of Agard who applied the finish from close range to fuel the Millers promotion push and send the travelling supporters into raptures. Evans’ side did not sit back despite their advantage and came close to doubling the lead when a marauding run by Frecklington down the left saw him deliver a delightful ball across the face of goal but an absence of red shirts in the box saw the ball
run harmlessly clear. Plymouth almost hit back through an unlikely source when centre-back Conor Hourihane found himself with time in the area, only to skew his effort well wide following a neat touch from Ronan Murray. Hourihane was made to rue another missed chance just seconds later when he found himself in a similar position but once again failed to hit the target for the second time in as many minutes. The hosts launched a barrage of attacks in the dying minutes with the most notable coming in the form of a goalmouth scramble that saw no fewer than four blocks from Millers players inside the 18-yard area with the best opportunity falling to Max Blanchard on the edge of the area. However, the Millers defended stubbornly and did enough to ensure they returned to South Yorkshire with a clean sheet and all three points. Millers: Shearer, Mullins ©, Davis, Morgan, Skarz, Agard, O’Connor, Arnason, Frecklington, (Ridehalgh 87), Pringle, Revell (Odejayi 90). Unused: Warrington, Tonge, Ainsworth, Nardiello, Noble. Plymouth Argyle: Cole, Blanchard, Branston, Hourihane ©, Cowane-Hall (Murray 51), Bhasera, Wotton, Nelson, (Chadwick 79), Bryan, Reid, (Harvey 81) Gurrieri. Unused: Gilmartin, Berry, Young, Charles.
Food Served Every Saturday WEEEKEND ROUND-UP LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke
County Senior League League Cup Final Wombwell Main claimed their second League win in six years, with a 3-0 win over High Green Villa at Sandy Lane midweek. Two quickfire goals from Simon Chadburn set Wombwell up for the win before halftime. They made the tie comfortable through a fantastic 25 yard overhead kick from Damon Cassell. Premier Division Danny Frost scored four times to inspire League leaders Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley to a 5-0 home win over Davy FC. The win takes Aqua Force a step closer to claiming the Premier Division title. They are currently three points clear with two games in hand of second place. Millmoor Juniors still lead the chasing pack. They were 2-0 winners midweek over Kinsley Boys at Grange Park, both goals came courtesy of Lee Jordan. Sadly for Millmoor they lost momentum at the weekend, when they were held to a 2-2 draw away against Swallownest Miners Welfare. Houghton Main ended a run of three consecutive losses midweek, with a 4-1 home win over Davy FC. Luke Sykes starred in that game, scoring a hat-trick. Houghton Main’s joy was short-lived though, as they were beaten 3-0 at home on the weekend by third placed Handsworth. Penistone Church will still feel they have a shout of the title. They may be eight points off the lead, but do have a game in hand of the leaders, and still have games against Millmoor Juniors and Aqua Force to play. Penistone did not play on the weekend, but were 3-1 winners over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves on Monday night. Wombwell Main had an eventful week. Firstly, they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Swallownest Miners Welfare. Then as mentioned, they won the League Cup on Thursday night before suffering a heavy 5-0 defeat at the Civil Service Ground on Saturday at the hands of Ecclesfield Red Rose. That win takes Ecclesfield above Kinsley Boys and into 12th place. South Kirkby Colliery took their first points in four matches, as they held League Cup finalists High Green Villa in an entertaining 3-3 at Millar’s Walk. Sadly for South Kirkby the point is not enough to lift them from the bottom-of-the-table. They sit three points back from Davy FC with two games spare. Everest secured their mid-table position with backto-back draws. On Wednesday night they drew 1-1 at home against Ecclesfield Red Rose. They followed that point with a 2-2 draw with Frecheville. Division One
NOTTS COUNTY HARM ROVERS PROMOTION CHANCES The last home game of the season brings Notts County to the Keepmoat. The weather was perfect for the occasion, fine, dry and sunshine brightening the whole season up. Before the match, war hero Ben Parkinson walked on his synthetic legs to the centre spot to place the ball on the centre spot receiving tremendous applause throughout the time it took. The Rovers, defending the North Stand end, kicked off against the pink shirted County side. After an early flurry, however, it was the visitors who made the running in the first 15 minutes. Judge had the first real strike at goal in the 8th minute from 25 yards but Sullivan saved. Two minutes later, a corner to the visitors on their right was placed to the far post where Arquin laid the ball back to Leacock, who fired over from 20yards. Then, in the 14th minute, the County were awarded a free kick about thirty yards out. LABADIE took the kick and arrowed it well out of Sullivan’s reach and into the top far corner. The Rovers now had to get their game together and pressed hard. Lundstram hit a bouncing ball from 30yards high over the bar and a corner to the Rovers was headed wide by Jones. Past the half hour and Paynter headed wide from a Cotterill cross on the right. The Rovers were trying hard but not making any headway against the Notts defence. A corner to the visitors in the 38th minute interrupted There were goals all around in Division One this week. Those goals were specifically found to fall in league leaders Athersley Recreation Reserves’ favour. On Monday night they were impressive 6-2 winners over Hallam Reserves at Sandygate. Then in a show of strength on Saturday they beat bottom club Caribbean Sports 10-1 at Sheerien Park. Four of those goals came from Richard Gomersall. Athersley sit four points clear. Oughtibridge remain second following a 4-1 midweek win over Thorpe Hesley. Jack Ridge was on the scoresheet twice for Oughtibridge, who will hope for favours from elsewhere, and a win in their game in hand to increase their title challenge. Third placed Swinton Athletic stumbled over the line. They completed their fixtures with a 2-2 draw away against Wickersley midweek. Hallam bounced back from their 6-2 defeat to Athersley with a 1-1 draw Sheffield Athletic. They then took out their frustration on Swinton Athletic, beating them 3-1 on Saturday. Third placed Swinton had previously drawn 2-2 with Wickersley on Monday and then 1-1 with Silkstone United on Wednesday, in an anti-climactic week for them. Penistone Church Reserves consolidated their third place position, with a 3-0 win over Sheffield Bankers on Wednesday night. They followed that up with a goalless draw on the weekend at home to Thorncliffe. Bramley Sunnyside Juniors made it two wins in three games, by beating Sheffield Athletic on Saturday at Warminster Road. Division Two Jubilee Sports ended their season in typical goal-scoring fashion against New Bohemians. Goals from Mark Cooper (2), Sam Hancliffe, Joe Liddell, Ben Dawson, Matt Turner and Jordan Livett gave the Division Two Winners a 7-4 home win at Chaucer School. The win leaves Jubilee with an impressive 11 eleven point lead in their first season in the County Senior League. Goals from Sean Ebbs and Robert Warner gave allowed Kiveton Park Reserves to end their season in style, with a 2-0 home win over fourth placed AFC Dronfield Woodhouse. Meadowhall League Premier Division The title race in the Premier Division is as close as ever. Only three points separate league leaders Handsworth Turf Tavern from second placed Crookes. Crookes also have a game in hand. Handsworth have had a very good week, with two wins. On Tuesday they beat Brunsmeer Abbey AJW 2-0 at Davy Sports Club, thanks to goals from Matthew Ellis and Jordan Turner. Then on Thursday, a Lee Brunt double set them up for a 2-1 win over Royal Earl. Crookes only played once this week, beating third placed Wadsley Bridge WMC 2-1 at Chaucer Sports Centre. Wadsley had tightened their grip on third place
the Rovers pressure but two minutes later, the best piece of football from the Rovers so far came down their left with Spurr and Coppinger combining. The latter got in a good strike but it was blocked and came out to Lundstram, who hit a thunderous drive from 20yards that Spiess managed to tip over the bar. Immediately the Rovers came again and after a goalmouth melee in which they tried twice to force the ball over the goal-line, Spiess dropped on the ball. It seemed to be only a matter of time before a goal came but instead half time intervened. The visitors started the second half but the Rovers were soon on the attack. Two minutes in and a long throw-in into the Notts area from Husband was back-headed by Coppinger to Paynter but he headed wide. The Rovers tried hard to break down the Notts defence but could not find a way through. Corners, free kicks and shots were all dealt with by the Notts defence and their goalkeeper, who was worked hard but his punching of the ball away was first class. A low free kick from Coppinger, which went through the wall was well saved by the unsighted Speiss, shots were blocked from Coppinger and Syers and Jones, moving up front, could not get his headers on target. There were no clear cut chances for the Rovers and despite six minutes of added time because of time wasting the whistle went on a win for Notts County and the Rovers chances of automatic promotion were left hanging by a thread. Teams – ROVERS – Neil Sullivan; James Husband, Jamie McCombe, Rob Jones ©, Tommy Spurr; David Cotterill, John Lundstram, Dean Furman, James Coppinger; Billy Paynter, Chris Brown Subs used – David Syers for Lundstram 63 mins; Kyle Bennett for Cotterill 77 mins; Iain Hume for Paynter 77 mins; Subs not used – Paul Quinn, Liam Wakefield, Cameron Howieson, Gary Woods gk Cautions – Jones 34 mins; Bennett 90+5 mins; on Thursday night with a 2-1 home win over Burnsmeer Abbey. Iftikhar Afzal scored three times to help inspire Sharrow United to a 6-1 win over Arundel on Tuesday. The reverse fixture took place on Sunday with a very different result; this time the teams shared a 2-2 draw. High Noon beat Greenhill White Hart 3-2 at Warminster Road on Sunday to climb to third bottom. Division One Arbourthorne EA put daylight between themselves and second placed Penistone Church, with 2-1 away win over Jack-in-a-Box. They now lead the table by three points, and are have five games in hand of Penistone. Rawson Spring beat Woodhouse JFC 4-0 on Thursday thanks to goals from James Middleton (2) and Alex Torr (2). The same places scored again to give Rawson a 2-2 draw with Intake Ball Inn on Sunday. HSBC registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season, with a 2-1 win over Jack-in-a-Box at home. Elsewhere, Hackenthorpe B were impressive 7-1 winners over Ridgeway Athletic at Ridgeway Sports & Social Club. Division Two It is tight in at the top in Division Two, with City Taxis (Stradbroke) cutting Hurlfield’s lead to just one point, following their 4-1 away win over Norton Athletic. City Taxis also have two games in hand of the leaders, who only have one game to play. Bystrany Sheffield climbed back into third place, with an entertaining 4-3 win over Hackenthorpe Villa at the Civil Service Ground. Hackenthorpe Villa ended their season on Sunday, with a 3-0 away win over bottom side Cricketers 2012 at Handsworth Grange School. SWD made it three wins from their last four games, with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Cricketers 2012 on Thursday night. Under 21 Division The U21 Division is playing host to possibly the most exciting of all the title races in the Meadowhall League. Sheffield FC U21’s lead the table on 48 points, following a 9-1 win over Swinton Spartans U21’s on Sunday. Throstles U21’s are only second on goal difference, with a game in hand. They registered back-to-back wins this week. Firstly, on Thursday night they were 8-2 winners over Crosspool Juniors U21’s at Sheffield Park Academy, and then they were emphatic 5-0 winners away against Woddhouse JFC U21’s on Sunday. Dronfield Town U21’s are in third on 40 points, with three games in hand. They were very impressive this week. They beat Hollinsend U21’s 12-0 on Thursday, and then Sharrow United U21’s 7-0 on Sunday. John Pugh was in fine form for Dronfield, scoring five times on Thursday and then scoring another four on the weekend.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 BLADES CONFIRMED IN PLAY-OFFS SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Saturday’s disappointing defeat at already-relegated Portsmouth confirmed United will take part in the end-of-season play-offs. The loss and results elsewhere made it mathematically impossible to catch the division’s top two. Three goals in 11 first-half minutes, from Shaun Cooper, David Connolly and Jed Wallace, stunned the Blades and the 1,836 Unitedites inside Fratton Park. With Maguire banned due to the two yellow cards picked up in midweek, Higginbotham took over in central defence - the only change to temporary boss Morgan’s starting XI, with Westlake was promoted to the bench. Pompey, meanwhile, were skippered by former Blades utility player, Ertl. Buoyed by a bumper attendance, Portsmouth made an enterprising start, winning an early corner and having a penalty appeal turned away when McDonald challenged Sodje inside the opening five minutes.
United appeared to have weathered the early storm and went close when Porter met a corner from McMahon but two goals in the space of three minutes put the home side firmly in the driving seat. Firstly, after Wallace had held off McDonald, COOPER rose above McMahon to head home Agyemang’s right-wing cross and then Wallace was the provider of the neat-post cross for CONNOLLY to nip in ahead of his marker to double the advantage. In the next three minutes Connolly fired into the side-netting and Wallace shot straight at Long after Ertl had beaten McDonald but Pompey did add a third just after the half hour mark. Two defenders failed to cut out Connolly’s low cross from the left and WALLACE found himself in ample space to slide the ball home past the exposed Long. Half-chances fell to Porter and Higginbotham, the former having a shot deflected wide and the latter’s header failing to find the target from the subsequent corner, whilst on 42 minutes, the final chance of the half, McMahon picked out Porter but the striker was called offside as he headed into the goal. At the start of the second half the Blades made a double change, Forte and Robson taking the places of Flynn and Kitson, and chasing the game the visitors attempted to put Pompey under pressure. Sodje headed over his own crossbar to prevent Porter connecting with Murphy’s cross and McMahon’s half-volley failed
to trouble goalkeeper Eastwood. It was McMahon’s last contribution as he limped off soon after, Westlake taking over at right-back, and Pompey attempted to reassert themselves, with Wallace going close on two separate occasions. McDonald was the first Blade to pick up a booking, the referee signalling an accumulation of offences, whilst Morgan switched to a 4-3-3 formation with Forte and Murphy joining Porter in attack. On 70 minutes Higginbotham headed over a Robson corner but the Blades were unable to seriously test Eastwood. Late on it was the Pompey who were seeing more of the ball but the only chance of note saw Long punch clear a Wallace corner. Three minutes of injurytime saw the Blades win a couple of free-kicks but again the home side were barely troubled. Pompey: Eastwood, Cooper, Sodje, Connolly, Moutaouakil, Gyepes, Ertl (Awford 90), Racon, Agyemang (Harris 86), Butler, Wallace (Maloney 89). Unused: Smith, Walker, Akinde, Webster. Blades: Long, Higginbotham, Hill, Flynn (Forte 45), Doyle, Porter, McDonald, Kitson (Robson 45), Collins, Murphy, McMahon (Westlake 59). Unused: Ironside, McFadzean, Whitehouse, Coyne.
DISAPPOINTED DANNY SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Danny Higginbotham pulled no punches following Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Portsmouth that ended the hopes of securing automatic promotion. The experienced defender conceded the first-half showing at Fratton Park was a complete let down and insists that performance must be put right at Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday. Speaking after the loss, that means United will have to win promotion via the playoffs, Higginbotham commented: “Portsmouth came out of the traps quickly and let’s make no bones about it, they were by far the better team and that is a big disappointment. “We have to be honest and admit the first-half was performance was simply not good enough, in fact it was unacceptable - it is no good trying to paper over the cracks and looking for positives. “As a group we have to address the problem straight away and only then can we put it firmly behind us.”

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 ANOTHER STEP FORWARD SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday took another step towards Championship safety on Saturday at Hillsborough with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich. A point sees the Owls move four clear of the drop zone with two games of the season left to play. The visitors struck first in the opening half through Jay Tabb before loan ace Leroy Lita levelled for Wednesday after the break. Having got back on level terms, Lita then had a goal chalked off as the hitman was adjudged to have headed home a Jeremy
Helan cross from an offside position. But with the Championship campaign well into its final stages, another point on the board for the Owls could prove crucial in their bid to retain second tier status. The Owls went into their penultimate home game of the season three points clear of the dangerzone after three consecutive away games at Milwall, Leeds and Blackpool. A midweek win for visitors Ipswich over Crystal Palace had given Mick McCarthy’s men breathing space in the relegation scrap, as they went into the clash two points above the Owls. The game was a tricky one for the Owls on paper, with Ipswich rejuvenated since McCarthy’s appointment at the helm in November 2012, with only Cardiff, Watford and Hull having gained more points since the turn of the year. Finding the net away from home has been a major problem for the Tractor Boys, who have registered just 13 goals on their travels all term – but it was the team in all white who threatened first in S6. Tabb’s cross from the right was dangerous, and Tommy Smith climbed high to head on target but Danny Pugh was on hand to head off the line at the back stick. The Owls were dealt a huge blow on 12 minutes, when Ipswich stole into the lead. A long throw from Carlos Edwards into the mix fell kindly for Tabb, who seemed to deflect the ball into the back of the net. The pressure was coming from the Tractor Boys as Wednesday had Chris Kirkland to thank for preventing a quickfire second goal. Luke Hyam took aim from distance before unleashing a thumping drive on target but Kirkland produced a fine diving stop to send behind for a corner. More misfortune was to follow for Wednesday when dangerman Jermaine Johnson was withdrawn through injury at the first half midway point . Wednesday, though, went on the hunt for
the equaliser and came close five minutes before the interval but Howard headed over from Pugh’s flag kick. Lita was then denied by a fine piece of goalkeeping from Scott Loach, who saved the striker’s effort from close range before Anthony Gardner saw his followup shot cleared off the line by Smith After the resumption, ex-Owl loanee Daryl Murphy tried his luck from outside the box but his curled effort whistled inches wide of Kirkland right hand upright. Wednesday looked to up the ante and almost found their way through on goal when Llera raced clear before being halted by a superb last ditch challenge by Luke Chambers. But as the Owls turned the screw, Ipswich could not keep Dave Jones’ men at bay as Lita fired home his fifth goal for Wednesday. Following excellent approach play by Lewis Buxton down the right, the full back managed to engineer space to whip in his centre which fell nicely for Lita, who blasted home from six yards. The home side were visibly buoyed by the equaliser and promptly went in search of gaining the lead – and almost did so with the next corner. Chris Maguire delivered an inch perfect set piece for Llera to attack but the defender’s header flashed wide of the target. Celebrations were then brought to an abrupt halt when Lita found the back of the net with a header after industrious work from Jeremy Helan on the left, as the referee’s assistant indicated the striker was offside. After confusion in the Owls’ box from a long throw, Pugh made another vital goalline clearance to prevent the Suffolk side from regaining their advantage. Three minutes of added time were signalled in S6 but there was no further drama as the referee brought an end to an entertaining stalemate. Owls: Kirkland, Buxton, Gardner, Llera, Pugh, Lee (Howard 25), Olofinjana, Coke, Helan, J Johnson (Maguire 28), Lita Unused substitutes: Bywater, Taylor, Mattock, McCabe, Prutton
A FAIR RESULT SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones said a point was a fair result following the 1-1 draw with Ipswich on Saturday. Leroy Lita cancelled out Jay Tabb’s opener as both sides earned a share of the spoils at Hillsborough. A hard-fought game spawned few chances but the point apiece helped edge the Owls and Ipswich further towards Championship safety. Jones said: “A point was a fair result. They had one cleared off the line and we had one chalked off for an offside that must have been very close so it finished pretty even. “And I’m pleased for the players because that’s two very hard games in a few days and I thought we looked a bit leggy, particularly in the first half. “But we battled on, we got the goal, and we did deserve something from the game.” The manager shed light on an early first half substitution that saw Kieran Lee withdrawn midway through the first half. He said: “It was tactical. I felt we needed a focal point up front and that’s why I put Stevie Howard on up there. “I thought he was superb. He won all his headers and by the end, their defence couldn’t deal with him. “Chris Maguire came on and he did really well too. It shows the value of having that depth in your squad.” Jones also confirmed that midfielder Stuart Holden has been recalled by parent club Bolton. He added: “Bolton are in a play-off spot, they have one or two injuries, and they want him back. “He’s got better and stronger as his loan has gone on and I would like to thank him for his services and wish him the very best for the future.”
Ipswich: Loach, Cresswell, Chambers, Stearman (Kisnorbo 68), Edwards, N’Daw, Tabb (Wordsworth 83), Hyam, Smith, Murphy (Emmanuel-Thomas 80), Nouble Unused substitutes: Lee-Barrett, Hewitt, Chopra, Drury Samantha & Carl Welcome You To
