COMMUNITY GAMES KEEP OLYMPIC SPIRIT ALIVE The spirit of London 2012 will live on in South Yorkshire thanks to a successful Olympic and Paralympic legacy project. Launched this week, the 2013 Community Games programme gives local groups and organisations the opportunity to apply for up to £500 of funding from South Yorkshire Sport. Grants can be used to run community events in Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster or Sheffield which bring local people together and encourage

new sports and arts activities. Community Games first came to South Yorkshire in 2012 and saw almost 40 festivals, family fun days and sporting competitions staged across the region. Community groups can also register their event on the Community Games website to access resources such as posters, certificates, t-shirts, banners, bunting and stickers. Stuart Rogers, development manager at South Yorkshire Sport, said: “These grants, from the

government’s national £2m Big Society Fund, are about creating a legacy from events in the heart of communities across South Yorkshire. “The Community Games programme was a huge success in 2012 so we are expecting many groups and organisations to get involved once again. “You could hold an event to celebrate the first anniversary of London 2012, the torch relay or the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. The programme gives communities

the opportunity to get together and celebrate what makes their area special.” For more information about applying for

funding or to register your event and access the resource pack, visit /www.sysport.co.uk/ community_games or call 0114 223 5683.

Copley’s Column

The importance of sport, and football in particular, is evident at the end of the football season. There is much jubilation in Doncaster and Rotherham this week with both teams giving a boost to their respective towns by gaining promotion. However, in Sheffield, there is still much nail biting to be done as Wednesday are not safe from relegation and United have much to do before promotion to the Championship is assured. My fervent wish for the renewal of the derby matches is still a long way from being realised with the possibility of three outcomes, derbies in the Championship, derbies in division one, or both teams in different divisions next season, the unthinkable possibility from my perspective that whilst United being promoted would be a dream, Wednesday being relegated would be a nightmare. The main topic of conversation, however, at the moment is the ‘Luis Suarez biting incident’ The Uruguayan is passionate about the game, but seems unable to put a lid on it. I rigorously defended him last year in this column when he was in my mind harshly treated by receiving an eight match ban for supposedly racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra, opinioning that he said something in the heat of the moment, which he presumably would not have said off the pitch. In this case, I think the F.A., not renowned for making sensible decisions when dispensing justice, overreacted with the disproportionate length of the ban, presumably taking into account his seven match ban in 2010 for biting Orman Baldal on the shoulder whilst playing for Ajax. His latest bite target was Chelsea’s Ivanovic, a very tough guy, who the comedians texting me have described as a very tasty defender.

Let me make it clear that I do not condone this disgusting behaviour, it is the sentence handed out to him which is my bone of contention. Had he squared up to Ivanovic and kneed him in his private parts, he would have received a probable three match ban. Any man reading this, if offered the choice of having this done to him or receiving a bite on the arm would not be slow in proffering his arm. I without doubt would be offering my arm out, and I only have one. The highlight of my week has to be Thursday night, when accompanied by my girlfriend, Caron, and veteran comedian Bobby Dennis and his companion Jean Harrison, I made a speedy return to the Devonshire Arms at Dore to see a special favourite act of mine, Sunny Daye. This consummate professional went down very well with the audience, and evidenced some fantastic body movement, which she self-mockingly describes as ‘not bad for a fat one’ I have been a close friend of Sunny’s for many years, during which time her fantastic vocal talent has not diminished. She is a credit to showbusiness locally, and had she had the lucky breaks in her career, would have been a big star. Landlady, Tina Gage, looking very glamorous, with a body to die for, made us very welcome as usual

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Tarot Tales (Part 2) Romany Method There are sixteen court cards in the Tarot deck: 4 Kings, 4 Queens, 4 Knights and 4 Pages. In the Romany method Kings represent mature men who have some standing in the world, Queens are likewise mature women, Knights are young men making their mark in life and Pages are children and young people of either sex. The Romany method is a very useful spread. It presents the cards in 3 rows that represent the Past, the Present and the Future. The Romany method of Tarot card reading puts a lot of emphasis on physical attributes, for example Sword cards usually represent dark haired people. Astrological Method The Astrological method places emphasis on the elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Each Court card relates to a particular element and consequently each card can represent someone born under the same sign. For example, the suit of Wands is ascribed to the Fire element and will represent people born under the signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The suit of Cups is Water and relates to people born under the signs of Cancer Scorpio and Pisces, the suit of Swords is Air and indicates Gemini, Libra and Aquarius and finally the suit of Pentacles is Earth communicating signs of Virgo, Taurus and Capricorn. If we combine the Astrological method with the Romany method we can gain a fuller description of a person. For instance, one card could suggest a man who is born under an Earth sign, is mature and has dark hair and eyes. The Ace - The Ace represents new beginnings.

In Numerology, the number one denotes the first impulses, so the Ace is principally an action card. Each Ace reflects different influences in our lives and represents a sequence of events to be set in motion for the first time. Ace of Wands The birth of a baby! The masculine Ace of Wands is under the creative Fire element. This card expresses initiative, drive and ambition. This can also indicate the birth of a baby and good fortune. Ace of Cups New love affair! When this card appears it means a new love is coming into your life. This Ace brings love and joy and great achievements. Ace of Swords Death/the end of Something! When the Ace of Swords makes an appearance it can mean dramatic changes to your life, anything from the end of a marriage to the resolution of a problem and it may push you to the boundaries of perseverance. This Air card has a fierce reputation partly due to its death link. However, it does not mean that someone will die; it communicates the ending of a particular way of life. Ace of Pentacles Security and money! The Ace of Pentacles is governed by the fruitful element of Earth. It signifies gain and the opportunity to improve your finances. The Ace of Pentacles heralds contentment, security and the end of financial worry. This is one of the best cards to have. Many times I have told a client that they will have a windfall because the Ace of Pentacles has come into their reading and the client has later confirmed that this has occurred. Watch out if ever I do a reading for you and the Ace of Pentacles comes out, you might be lucky too! Please call for a reading on 07811632353 or email psychicglynis@talktalk.net

Nestled amongst breathtaking moorland scenery, it is a local landmark within the Peak District National Park, yet only 20 minutes drive from Sheffield centre. Over the centuries The Strines Inn has gained and maintained a well-deserved reputation for good quality traditional English home made food, much of which is made on the premises and cooked to order. The menu includes firm favourites: - the pies are particularly popular, and visitors never fail to be impressed as to how giant the giant Yorkshire Puddings actually are! There is a generous choice of vegetarian dishes, and for children we have a special menu with the same quality foods in smaller quantities to promote healthy eating.

NEWS & INFORMATION

A NATION OF SNORERS

http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/snoring/Pages/ snoringcauses.aspx A quarter of Britons snore, and two in three do it so loudly that it keeps their partner awake. Famous snorers, past and present, include Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill, the film director Ken Russell and TV pundit John McCririck. A survey commissioned by hotel chain Travelodge identified five types of snorers: • The Snorter: rapid blowing of air through the mouth, and a noise similar to a horse snorting. • The Snorchestra: makes long, low snores that gradually build into a deafening noise. • The McEnroe: sounds like a tennis star grunting during a match. • The Walrus: makes continuous groaning noises when sleeping. • The Old Banger: sounds like a broken car with a spluttering engine. While it may be a source of comedy, snoring is a real problem that can affect our wellbeing and put strain on relationships. It can force couples to sleep apart and ruin sex lives. Sleep expert Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre says that snoring is increasing. He blames the trend on alcohol abuse and unhealthy diets. “Apart from lack of sleep and tiredness, snoring can cause intimacy problems and puts an unnecessary strain on relationships,” he says. It’s not only partners who are affected. Obstructive sleep apnoea, where a person stops breathing during sleep, is a disorder often associated with chronic snorers. Prolonged periods of sleep apnoea can result in higher blood pressure and may cause enlargement of the heart, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. The snoring noise is due to an obstruction of the airway, which results in air turbulence and vibrations when breathing. Men are twice as likely to snore as women. Middle-aged men are the biggest sufferers, according to the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association. Women tend to snore more during and after the menopause, but they’re also more likely to snore during pregnancy. This is caused by the hormonal and physical changes that occur during these times. Many children snore because of allergies, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, or craniofacial abnormalities, which may cause snoring to continue into adulthood if not dealt with. There’s evidence to suggest snoring is genetic, with risk factors such as jaw structure, tongue size and airway obstruction being passed down from generation to generation

The Farm’s rare breed Golden Guernsey goats gave birth to five kids including a set of triplets to nanny goat Holly. Rosie the Large Black pig had nine piglets and two sheep, rare breed Soays, had a lamb each. Although not a rare breed Honeysuckle, the Anglo Nubian goat, also added to the population boom by giving birth to twins, named Sooty and Sweep by the youngsters who work at the Farm on placement. ‘It was exciting helping the goats deliver their kids safely ’, said youth and adult training worker Julie Blacker who was on hand to assist Holly and Honeysuckle ‘and it’s lovely for the young people who work here – it means they get the chance to experience all the different elements of working on a farm.’ Emily Ogden aged 14, a regular volunteer at the Farm who was there for the birth of Holly’s triplets, said ‘It was a bit disgusting but it was educational to watch!’

EXHIBITION CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF BUS TRAVEL

BACK BY POPULA DEMANDR !

A celebration of 100 years of Motor Bus Transport takes place in Sheffield on Sunday 12 May at the old Olive Grove/Charlotte Road depot. To commemorate this event First Bus will exhibit two of their modern buses both in different period liveries. The original Lodge Moor route which was the first in Sheffield will be re-enacted using two of the old 1950's fleet, numbers 904 & 1156, currently owned by the South Yorkshire Preservation Group, based at the South Yorkshire Transport Museum, Rotherham. There will also be a service to the South Yorkshire Transport Museum in Rotherham (normal admission charges apply) by various visiting vehicles on an half hourly service. A display of various model, trade and display stands will be in attendance, plus a large number of buses from various preservation groups will be on show. The Charlotte Road site was previously the site of the old Sheffield United Tours depot and one of the only surviving road worthy vehicles will be on display, which is entered by its owner Mr D Jordan of Sheffield. The event is being organised by First Bus South Yorkshire in collaboration with various preservation groups, South Yorkshire Transport Museum, Sheffield Transport Study Group and South Yorkshire Transport Trust.

THANK YOU VOICE OF THE MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

It’s been a busy week here at Magic and now seems like a good time to say a massive thank you for all your help. Friday was our annual special Cash for Kids Day when our flagship charity stages all sorts of different events and fund raising activities to help the many professionals, volunteers workers and organisations who provide a vital service for underprivileged and disadvantaged children in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. We stopped off at lots of places and even had a helicopter in service too enabling us to get around faster. Your generosity has helped us raise £30,000 for so many different causes we give out your donations to. I was out and about with Glenn on the Breakfast Show chatting to specialist children’s cancer nurses and social workers. Plus, Sunday was of course the Jane Tomlinson Peak District Walk raising money for lots of different charities including our own. I’m pleased to say it all went off well and thanks for my own sponsors because I managed 14 miles, plus there was nowhere near the awful weather we endured last year. There are more fun and games this week if you’re tuning in too. After Nick Wright and Ray Rose’s escapades live on board a cruise ship on Monday, don’t forget we have a fantastic cruise holiday to give away in the Med. Simply listen in and if you heard some of the details mentioned on Monday’s outside broadcast, you could be a winner. Good luck if you’re taking part. You could bag a FREE holiday.

NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

Are you one of the 6.4m people that use a search engine every day? Did you know you can raise money for Radio Nightingale while you search? By using easysearch instead of Google or any other search engine, you can make a real difference. easysearch is completely FREE and by making just 10 searches a day, you could raise around £20 a year for Radio Nightingale. As well as raising funds, easysearch also gives you the best search results available on web. Today, the Internet is so big that different search engines will often deliver different results for the same search. So, by combining the strengths of several search engines together - Yahoo!, Bing, MIVA, and many more - you get the very best results in terms of accuracy and relevance, which means you’ll find what you’re looking for quickly and easily every time - all in one ‘easy’ search! What people are saying about easysearch “easysearch is a great idea and just as good as Google for the results! I’ve recommended it to my friends and I think this site is the best around as it does something for people. Well done!” “What a fantastic idea! I was using Google anyway but this way I get to raise money for my good cause every time I search…brilliant! I’ve made easysearch my homepage!” So the next time you need to find something online, please use http:// radionightingale.easysearch.org. uk and raise money for Radio Nightingale with every search you make. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

After a few months break from writing for the Mercury, Club Historians is back. That is something to celebrate surely! But in these times of never-ending recession, welfare cutbacks and high unemployment, reasons to be celebrate might seem few and far between. In that case, it’s a good idea for club committees and members to get creative. This time last year we had the Jubilee and the Olympics coming up and so this year might seem a bit flat in comparison. But just this past week we have seen St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday come and go and both offered opportunities to put out the bunting. Some clubs did celebrate the former, the national saint of England. My own local club had a Sunday night special with a concert and fish ‘n’ chips as an optional extra. We are slowly coming round to celebrating St. George’s day though we probably will never do so as enthusiastically as the Irish celebrate St Patrick! Why should clubs celebrate Shakespeare though? There are many reasons to fly the flag on the Bard’s birthday particularly when recalling the early history of clubs. There was a strong element of home-made entertainment of a more ‘cultured’ variety. Larger clubs had halls with stages that enabled theatrical performances to be put on including scenes from Shakespeare, which brought nods of approval from upper class patrons. The men prepared performances themselves or brought in a dramatic group. Northamptonshire’s Kettering WMC was praised for its facilities. ‘The scenery on the stage is very pretty, and the entertainment was first class in every way. The club is the first to have a stage, I think, in the county, and it should encourage others,’ commented a CIU official in 1898. Men would build their own props in the early clubs, even make costumes (probably with the help of their wives) and learn lines from Shakespeare plays off by heart. These were a form of celebration of the Bard and were in line with the early club vision which offered a framework for members to engage in a range of political, educational, or recreational activities. The popularity of dramatic groups in the late 19th century did decline as music hall type of entertainment came to predominate. Shakespeare did have a role in the early clubs. In these contemporary times club committees could put his birthday as a day to put on something a bit special to bring in the members.

LEEDS FESTIVAL LOCK UP STAGE

If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk

live PREVIEW

Words by KT Evans

At last…the announcement we’ve all been waiting for to conclude the line-up to this year’s festival extraordinaire…Leeds and Reading’s lock-up stage. Although maybe not quite for the faint hearted, the lock-up stage at Leeds Fest 2013 is now being held over the entire weekend as oppose to just Friday and Saturday in previous years, meaning tonnes more hardcore, rock and alternative bands for your three day event. Couldn’t say fairer than that! And what a host of bands they’ve got in store for us all. Headlining Friday 23rd August’s lock-up stage is no other than Shikari Sound System, the electronic alter ego of British chart toppers Enter Shikari. Making their world debut and combining live instruments alongside dub-step wizardry, the Shikari camp describe this as ‘…one for the skankers, the steppers, the movers and the shakers.’ Funeral For a Friend are headline support on the Friday, with new addition to the group, ex Rise To Remain Drummer Pat Lundy. Bull dogs of the hardcore scene, Gallows are set to seize the lock-up audience with their trade mark post-punk edginess which has seen the group storm to underground success. However, our recommendation for Friday 23rd August goes to Crossfaith, Japan’s most brutal electrocore five piece. With one hell of a cover to The Prodigy’s ‘Omen,’ we seriously suggest you give these a check out. Saturday 24th August will see Alkaline Trio headline the notorious lock-up stage, pop-punk pioneers with over fifteen upbeat years’ experience carried with them. Oz punk rockers The Living End have also joined the line-up alongside post hardcore’s sturdiest backbone, Quicksand. Rising to industry success in the mid 1990’s, Quicksand’s UK festival appearance is long awaited after reuniting last summer in California for a lone-off live show. Brooklyn’s Cerebral Ballzy have been announced for the middle Saturday of Leeds Festival, having being described to ‘cause utter on-stage chaos.’ Don’t say we didn’t warn you. The final day of Leeds Fest will see four fierce acts take to the lock-up stage, including self-proclaimed ‘weirdo-rockers’ Tomahawk. This super group combines members of Faith No More, the Jesus Lizard, Battles and Mr Bungle and will be the group’s first time performance at Leeds’ infamous event. LA pack The Bronx are set to perform, having being described by the BBC as ‘one of only a few bands who’s music is as loud as it is thoughtful.’ Joining these include Sick Of It All alongside skapunk brigade King Prawn. Tickets are still available for Leeds Festival 2013 and can be purchased from www.leedsfestival.com.

SKATERS 23/5/13 GREAT GATSBY

Check out www.skaters.com/nyc

Clothing, Footwear, Jewellery... A Little Bit of Everything

Open 10-6 monday-saturday _ 11-5 Sunday

Words by KT Evans

Having been described as ‘legit, successful musicians in their own right,’ Skaters are far more than your struggling US touring punk pack. With all three of their members having previously worked within other groups (lead singer Michael Ian Cummings and drummer Noah Rubin formerly of The Dead Trees alongside guitarist Joshua Hubbard of Dirty Pretty Things and The Paddingtons) could it be justified to say Skaters have the makings of being a potential super group? With their performance at Sheffield’s Great Gatsby on 23rd May, we’ll sure as hell find out. Speaking to vocalist Michael Cummings transported us into the smoggy world of New York City. With a deep US accent rarely heard in the shackles of Sheffield City Centre (o’h please, the most exotic sounding voice we get here is calling up our local Indian takeaway) an indication of the exciting nature punk rock trio Skaters have to offer. “We’ve got 27 shows in cities we’ve never been to before,” explains Michael who didn’t laugh at our Man Vs. Food joke upon introduction…don’t ask. “We can’t wait to be up North in the UK, the crowds are better up there than down South.” Although the answer we achieved when asking to describe themselves for music fans who may not be aware of the sights and sounds of Skaters was “…a band of guys who play music…” the trio are as far removed from three normal dudes as you can get. Emphasising their main influences as 70’s and 80s punk bands, it’s hard to compare Skaters to anybody on the current scene at the moment… and this is exactly why the band are riding their sky high wave at the moment. Hell they might write their band influences as “Donald Duck, chicken liver and English chocolate” (they’re in luck) on their band page however Michael explains, “we just love doing what we do. We’re playing the smaller venues across the UK to show people that this is exactly what we’re about, this is what we do.” Small enough to house pretty epic levels of atmosphere, The Great Gatsby on Division Street personifies Skaters to a T…independent of constraints, stereotypes and opinions. Hell Michael may joke about the show as a “star studded event with lots of smoke machines and celebrities everywhere,” although having heard their “I Wanna Dance But I Don’t Know How,” we can pretty much guarantee you’ll have just a good a night (minus the egos).

PREVIEW

round-up by stuart renton

It’s still cold out there, chaps. In fact, I’ve not been blown this regularly since that Snowman came to life back in 1982… or was that all just some strange and horrible dream involving my choir boy days and the Rohypnol trials? I can’t tell, but either way, I’m really starting to get fed up. Stepping out of your door is the pits when you’re shuffling about in your arctic clothes trying to hide from the incessant wind that always manages to sneak a frosty finger into your nether regions. You can find out more about snowmen sex at www.hidemycarrot.com But, if these freezing conditions are not the fault of the snowmen, then who is to blame for this hideous weather? Well, I can confirm with absolute certainty that it is in fact entirely the fault of plastic popstrel, Justin Beiber, who, since his record co mpany gagged him, has been unable to spout all the hot air he would normally spew from his exceptionally vapid mouth, which has in turn failed to warmed the Gulf Stream, which in turn means we’re suffering under these freezing conditions. You may think that celebrities provide not a single moment of use to the planet, but as you can see, they do actually provide one useful service. Probably. And speaking of celebrities, I hear the JLS boys have announced their imminent split and the community (aka a few twelve year olds and a slew of 40 year old men posing as girly teens) have, in between all the sobbing and wailing, expressed their anguish that One Direction could be next. If only that were true… We can only live in hope, right? And while I’m on the subject of crappy celebrities, it seems the BBC is really getting its money’s worth out of the second season of The Voice. At only 11 million pounds per season, I’d say that was money “well worth” spending. Especially as there really is

nothing – and I mean nothing - like seeing the hope on an ex-popstar’s face as their dreams are crushed… for the second time. It really is priceless! What could possibly be more twisted than that - a show telling eight year olds that their cancer has come back, perhaps? And speaking of cancer, I just want to know when pharmaceutical testing will be allowed on ex-boy bands? I think that’d be a fitting use to their ‘talents’. It’d be nice to think The Wanted would actually be put to some actual use once their careers as singers are over. Well, I say “singers”... Other TV news. Doctor Who is still utterly crap, which is such a shame as there are missing episodes of the original series out there which no one has seen for forty years. If only we could do a swap - I’d gladly exchange some of these latest episodes for some blurry black and white episodes recorded off half degraded and tea-stained film – that would be a thousand times better than the toss we’ve had to endure of late. I don’t care who Clara is. I don’t care about the Doctor’s name. And I really don’t want to see River Song in any time/space continuum ever again. Oh but it’s all so clever, I hear the reviewers giggle… well, so is Quantum Superstring Theory, but nobody wants to watch that at six o’clock on a Saturday evening. Sigh. And last on TV this week. What part of BRITAIN’s Got Talent don’t the producers get? Romanians, Hungarians, Bulgarians – they seem to be the only ones with talent on this year’s show. BGT seems to be following the UK’s immigration policy right down to the letter: they’ll let anyone in and they’ll give them a wad of cash just for being here. Our own contestants don’t get a look in (not that we have any talent in the UK). I’m sure these countries must have their own versions of the ‘Got Talent’ show, after all, it’s been shown in more countries than Tulisa’s sex tape. And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’ll take you less than ten seconds to Google “Tulisa Sex Tape”. Now you’re good to go! More smut next week.

KEVIN HELPS BRING THE MUSIC OF QUEEN TO THE ARENA Kt Evans interviews former Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy on his forthcoming appearance in Queen musical ‘We Will Rock You’ that comes to the Motorpoint Arena at the end of the month. Seen by more than 11 million people worldwide, We Will Rock You has quickly become one of the most popular musicals to have ever graced the international stages of theatre. Once a book by comedy legend Ben Elton, the production has gone onto win over ten prestigious awards including Best New Musical, Outstanding Production Of a Musical along with the Laurence Oliver Award for Audience’s Most Popular Show. Now on a full scale tour throughout Europe, Kevin Kennedy joins the cast throughout exclusive UK dates, including the hugely anticipated arrival of the show to Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena from 30th May – 2nd June 2013. “I’ve always had a huge love for theatre,” explains Kevin Kennedy, former Coronation Street actor who played love-rat Curly Watts from 1983-2003. “There’s something about the immediacy of being on stage…it’s live and anything can happen whereas when you’re behind a camera recording a programme, there’s no sense of immediacy so that certain moment can be lost in the process.” Playing happy-go-lucky hippie ‘Pop’ in the smash hit production of We Will Rock You since 2009, Kevin is by no means a stranger to sold-out live performances. Relentlessly performing to thousands of spectators within the West End Live headquarters on Tottenham Court Road, Central London, Kevin is now looking forward to getting back out on the touring road to perform to cities which he holds close to his heart. “It will be fantastic to bring We Will Rock You to Sheffield. Growing up in Manchester, I spent time in Sheffield, it’s a brilliant city. We’re also playing MEN Arena in Manchester and Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle. The show is fantastic, I really think everybody should come down and enjoy it.” However, the huge buzz of a live performance isn’t

the only aspect of the show Kevin is most looking forward to. Having previously grafted in a former rock band, The Paris Valentinos with The Smith’s legend Johnny Marr, Kevin also has a huge passion for the very essence of We Will Rock You…the music. With the musical based on songs by British heroes Queen, the show is packed full of anthems which will transport you back to a time when flared jeans and curly perms were trendy…”Queen are an absolutely fantastic band, it is a privilege to be able to work with a musical where the songs are some of my absolute favourites. Every night is a party for me, it’s just brilliant.” Although using the remainder of the interview to discuss whether or not there will be a triumphant return of Curly Watts back on the infamous Street (chances are looking slim) the overwhelming sense that Kevin Kennedy thrives off a live stage performance is crystal clear to see. Urging everyone to purchase a ticket for “…one of the best nights out you’ll have in a long time…” from the massive amounts of critical acclaim, we simply cannot wait. We Will Rock You is coming to Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena from 30th May – 2nd June. Check out www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk for tickets and information. Tickets start from £22.50.

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

I’ve had an absolutely manic few days, and this week has seen turn my hand to photojournalism in the form of video reviews for a change! Now, bear in mind I only bought a digital camera to ‘keep up’, video is an unknown entity to me and something I’ve tried to avoid because it seems everyone is doing it just as badly as everyone else and I don’t want to be part of it! However; an email from a contact at Angler’s Mail to ask if I’d be interested in doing video reviews of some local venues soon changed my mind, so I had to go and buy a video camera...... Have you ever tried filming a venue? And talking for between three and five minutes whilst trying to make it sounds interesting and varied? I hadn’t either and it’s certainly not something I’m finding particularly easy to do. I guess I’ll get used to it, but if anyone has any tips, I’m all ears! I’ve had a super days fishing too at Gawsworth Fisheries in Cheshire where I offered Marukyu AFP 300 paste and krilled maggots to take a great mixed bag of tench, rudd, roach, bream and ide which I’d estimate at 40-45lbs. I’ve rarely fished with paste before, so it was another challenge, but the Marukyu baits have simple instructions on the back of every bag to help mix it properly and once sorted, it worked very well. I started out at ‘dead depth’ on the float but ended up coming ‘up in the water’ as the sun warmed through and the paste started to get battered off the hook even before it had settled. A steady stream of lovely golden rudd followed....is there a nicer fish to catch when the sun is shining? I doubt it.... I was also lucky enough to meet an angler on the bank who was struggling a little bit to catch carp in the pool directly behind me; His mate had gleefully caught loads more during the day, so I took some of my Marukyu products across and asked him to try them to see if he could catch up. Carp had been falling to method tactics and mini boilies for his chum, so I showed him how to mix Marukyu groundbait, add a few millilitres of liquid flavouring and a teaspoon of powdered krill to create a devastating mix and put a small piece of glugged meat on the hair. Casting to the island margin, the rod hadn’t even gone back on the rest before the tip wrenched around as a hungry carp took off! I couldn’t have wished for a better result, as although Marukyu isn’t the miracle bait we all search for, it’s not far off, and now an angler who had never previously used it will go and buy some after catching a string of chubby carp first time out! Brilliant! To top it all, he eventually outfished his now sullen mate and vowed to give him lessons..... love it!

WANTED!

by Timelord

The first two of the season’s classics are upon us this weekend with the 2000 Guineas on Saturday and the 1000 Guineas on Sunday, both run at Newmarket. The TV racing comes from there and from Goodwood. There are four races from Newmarket and two from Goodwood on Saturday that make up the Channel 4 coverage (and most probably most of the Scoop 6). On Sunday Channel 4 again provides four races from Newmarket and one from Salisbury. Saturday: Newmarket: 2.05 Makfi Suffolk Stakes (Handicap), 3yo+, 1m1f: A competitive handicap may be determined by jockeyship with some inexperienced riders up against some of the best. The key race could well be the Newbury Spring Cup of a fortnight ago which was won by Haaf A Sixpence. That race had Chapter Seven back in third, Memory Cloth in seventh and Dance and Dance in twenty-fourth. All three are entered for this one with the former looking to have by far the best chance of the trio. Tellingly Educate, who had run so well at Doncaster previously, finished down the field in fourteenth at Newbury. However, I am taking a chance that he under-performed there and therefore like the chance of Ocean Tempest who finished fifth in that Doncaster race. This one is lightly weighted and gets an apprentice 7lb allowance to boot. Trail Blaze is also respected along with Danchai, Fury and Swiftly Done. 2.35 Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 5f; Free Zone gets the nod ahead of Elusivity, Sole Power, Heeraat, Ballesteros, Pearl Secret and Maarek but there is not much between the whole field on my figures. Kingsgate Native, Masamah, My Propeller, Caledonia Lady, Doc Hay and Swan Song are clustered closely behind the above seven with the rest of them not too far away either. Wide open and competitive it is likely to be down to which one feels best in itself on the day. 3.10 Qatar Bloodstock Jockey Club Stakes, Group 2, 4yo+, 1m4f: A small field turns out for this Group 2 contest but it looks a competitive renewal nonetheless. I have Light Heavy and Wigmore Hall top of my last time out table closely followed by Universal and Noble Mission. Universal beat Noble Mission by two heads when they met at Newbury two weeks ago, battling back to lead on the line after being just about headed by Noble Mission a furlong out. It looked to me that Noble Mission just lacked that crucial race-fitness and I expect a better showing this time. He has my top overall rating and gets the vote in an intriguing contest. 3.50 Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes, Group 1, 3yo, 1m: The unbeaten Dawn Approach should be good enough to land the season’s first classic race. Jim Bolger’s colt has been very impressive on the track in his career so far. Bolger also has Leitir Mor entered and this one is very much respected on his Dewhurst second to Dawn Approach. George Vancouver and Cristofor Colombo looks to be the best of the O’Brien entries on what has been shown on the race track to date but Lines of Battle and Mars both have a somewhat unexposed look to them. Richard Hannon has a couple of very strong contenders in Toronado and Van Der Neer. Richard Hughes looks to have chosen the unbeaten Toronado, who is bound to be a danger, but I have a sneaking feeling that Van Der Neer could be the one to cause most trouble to the favourite. Goodwood: 2.20 Betfred “The Bonus King” EBF Daisy Warwick Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m 4f: My vote here goes to Shirocco Star with Semayyel getting the first reserve position, followed by Khione and Bite of the Cherry.

2.55 Betfred Mobile Stakes, Handicap, 4yo+, 0-100, 7f: Paul Cole’s Silverheels is the first choice to land this one with the reserve order being: Mabait; I’m So Glad; Dream Tune; The Confessor; Captain Bertie; and Accession.

Millers & Rovers News 2012-13

MILLERS SEAL LAST MINUTE PROMOTION DRAMA SEES

SECOND-HALF strikes from skipper Johnny Mullins and Lee Frecklington saw Rotherham United seal automatic promotion to League One following a 2-0 victory over relegated Aldershot. In front of a sell-out crowd at the New York Stadium, the Millers’ sealed promotion to the next tier with their fifth win on the bounce at the end of a memorable campaign. Steve Evans made just one change to the starting line-up following their impressive run of form of late with has seen the Millers’ notch four straight wins in the promotion run-in. David Noble returned at the heart of Rotherham’s midfield as Icelandic international Kari Arnason reverted back to a central defensive position at the expense of Craig Morgan, who was ruled out due to a virus. The Millers were quick out of the blocks and Arnason’s long throw saw Jamie Young halfheartedly punch to the edge of the box where Ben Pringle blasted over with the goal unguarded. Minutes later, Michael O’Connor fired a speculative effort from distance which had Young nervously scrambling across goal before the ex-Scunthorpe midfielder turned provider moments later but Kieran Agard’s goalbound effort was blocked by a retreating defender. The home side were looking to most likely and fine work from Pringle saw Frecklington strike goalwards but Oliver Lancashire bravely put his body on the line before Noble’s arrowed pass put Alex Revell in the clear seconds later but his toe-poked effort rolled tantalisingly wide of the target. However, the Millers’ were given a scare when Joe Skarz’s backpass saw Scott Shearer dally in possession and with Asa Hall in pursuit, his clearance almost ricocheted off Hall into the home net. At the other end, a fine flowing move saw Pringle thread a ball into the advancing run of Revell, who skimmed a low effort from the edge of the box which was smothered by Young. With half an hour gone, Revell was flattened by Sonny Bradley and from the resultant free-kick, Pringle curled an inswinger which almost saw Mullins sneak in unmarked but Young snuffed out the danger. Moments later, Agard almost got on the end of a long punt from Skarz before Hall headed over at the other end as he climbed highest from Peter Vincenti’s corner. With seconds remaining, Danny Rose fizzed an effort across the box which had home hearts’ fluttering but Michael Rankine was unable to turn the ball goalwards. Half-time:- Rotherham United 0 Aldershot Town 0 Following the restart, Aldershot had the first of goal when Anthony Tonkin’s long throw had the home side at sixes and sevens but Adam Mekki was unable to turn the ball goalwards. Moments later, Revell’s looping header from an innocuous ball forward had Young backtracking nervously but he recovered his ground to snuff out the danger. Revell was in the thick of the action and after Pringle worked a shooting position on the edge of the box, the ex-Orient frontman fired a snap shot which stung the palms of Young. Just past the hour mark, Vincenti fired a fierce freekick from distance which forced Shearer into a smart save. Shots’ skipper Ben Herd then saw yellow for a lash out at sub Daniel Nardiello and the Millers’ made the visitors’ pay with the vital breakthrough from the resultant free-kick. O’Connor flighted a centre which was spilled under pressure by Young and firstly, Revell attempted to divert the ball goalwards and the ball fell invitingly into the path of Mullins, who had the simple task of tapping home into the empty net. The Millers were buoyed by the breakthrough and a lightning counter-attack led by O’Connor paved the way for Pringle to advance menacingly towards goal but his low drive was diverted to safety by the legs of Young rather fortuitously. The home side were looking to seal the deal and Revell’s volley was arrowing towards the bottom corner until Young’s intervention. With seconds running out, Aldershot had a late rally and following a period of pressure, Mekki’s header saw Shearer parry the ball onto the upright before Arnason cleared the danger off the line with the visitors’ appealing the ball had crossed the whitewash. However, the Millers sealed the victory and promotion in fine style deep in stoppage time when Pringle surged clear from the heart of midfield and his sweeping pass released Frecklington, who weighed up his options before calmly slotting the ball past Young into the corner of the goal. The goal sparked a pitch invasion which forced the referee to halt the proceedings sparking huge scenes of joy among the home faithful.

ROVERS CROWNED CHAMPIONS

It’s a winner-take-all game at Griffin Park, where Brentford have to win to get automatic promotion and the Rovers need a point to do the same. But only one of them can progress, the other has to go through the Play-Offs. Both sides made changes from last Saturday. For the Rovers, Paul Quinn returned to the side after injury. The home team made three changes, Tom Adeyami, Harry Forrester and Clayton Donaldson coming in. The home team kicked off, with the early minutes spent sounding each other out. The game was being played at a cracking pace and it was the Rovers who got the frist strike on goal when Brown went down the right, laid the ball back for Cotterill to shoot low

from 25 yards but he put just wide of the far post. Minutes later a free kick by Spurr from just outside of the home penalty area was blocked. The home team then attacked down the left and from about ten yards Donaldson hit a low shot that hit the far post and was cleared. On the quarter hour Brentford won a corner but it was well cleared. The fast and furious pace continued until the 21st minute when, following a Rovers free kick, Furman had a go from 25 yards but it was blocked. Then a corner to the home team was well caught by Sullivan off the top of WrightPhilips head. Past the half hour and Brentford were having the better of the possession, which brought about a couple of bookings for the Rovers, for McCombe and Lundstram. The Rovers now had their fair share of the play as time ran down to the break, with the pace of the game barely having slackened. In the 44th minute a Coppinger strike from 25 yards was beaten away by Moore, in the home goal. At the other end Wright-Philips had a shot saved by Sullivan. In the fourth minute of added time good work by Hume up front, saw him lay the ball back to Cotterill but his low shot was saved by Moore. The managers have had 15 minutes to work their magic on the two teams. Whose season is going to end at ten to five? The Rovers started the game, which took up from where the first half had ended. The pace was the same but play was mainly in midfield. Then within a couple of minutes the home team won a couple of corners but nothing came from them as the Rovers defence cleared them. Play settled down as a midfield battle. The home team

made two substitutions just past the hour, which seemed to give them an impetus. A corner to the Rovers in the 67th minute was headed wide at the far post by Jones whilst under challenge, then Douglas had a go from 20yards but it was so high it went over the stand. Another corner to the Rovers came to nothing. As the last fifteen minutes came up the home team began to have more of the possession but the Rovers kept their shape and discipline so that Sullivan wasn’t unduly troubled. In the 75th minute, however, with the home side pressing the ball was cleared down the right to Cotterill. He put down the line to Hume, who took it on before hitting a low cross to the middle where Cotterill was trying to get to but he didn’t quite make it. Back came Brentford, with all-out attacks. A cross from their left by Forshaw was met by Dean with a header but Sullivan saved comfortably. Then a corner to the Bees reached Saunders some 25 yards out but he fired over. In the 85th minute Cotterill charged down a clearance, went down the right before putting in a low cross but Paynter couldn’t quite get there. More Brentford attacks were thwarted before the 88th minute when good work by Coppinger on the Rovers left brought a cross to the far post where Paynter, coming in from the right fired into sidenetting. Five minutes of added time was displayed and in the 95th minute Brentford were awarded a penalty after a goalmouth melee. Trotta had the task of taking it, with a number of his team-mates giving him some advice. He hit the bar, the ball was cleared up to Paynter, in his own half on the right near the touchline. He went down the right as Coppinger raced down the middle. The low cross came in as the goalkeeper came out. COPPINGER rounded the keeper and slotted into the empty net for a famous victory. The referee eventually re-started the game and immediately blew for full time. The Rovers fans and players celebrated for the next twenty minutes.

Food Served Every Saturday WEEEKEND ROUND-UP LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke

County Senior League It was a week of title-deciders in the County Senior League, but first we must start with news of Swinton Athletic’s S&HCFA Rosehill Association Challenge Cup win. Swinton, of Division One, defeated Kirkburton 3-0 last Thursday. Luke Moore scored two of those goals, with Mark Clare also converting a penalty to give Swinton their first ever Rosehill Cup win. Premier Division Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley claimed their first Premier Division title. They were only promoted to the top flight in the summer. Aqua Force were 2-1 away winners on Saturday in a tight affair with Ecclesfield Red Rose. Shaw Lane had also drawn 0-0 earlier in the week with third placed Handsworth. They now have an unassailable six point lead at the top. This lead could have been cut slightly, but second placed Millmoor Juniors could only draw 1-1 on Saturday with fellow high-flyers Penistone Church. Penistone still have a shout of second place, but they have drawn three of their last four matches, including a 1-1 draw midweek away against Ecclesfield Red Rose. Penistone are now four points behind Millmoor with two games in hand. Houghton Main were the pace-setters at the top for so much of the season have had a poor week by their standards. They were held 0-0 at Millar’s Walk by South Kirkby Colliery on Monday night. They followed that disappointment up with another 0-0 draw, this time it came at Thorncliffe Playing Fields against High Green Villa. Houghton Main have now won only one of their last seven games and sit in fifth place. Swallownest have had an eventful week. On Monday night they were 3-2 winners away against High Green Villa thanks to goals from Andy Jones, Danny Archibould and Richard Williams. They went onto score three again at the weekend, but this time they were held 3-3 by Frecheville, who were spurred on by a Daniel Bainbridge brace. The two results guarantee Swallownest a sixth place finish. South Kirkby Colliery lifted themselves from the bottom of the Premier Division on Saturday, with an excellent 4-1 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves at Brackenmoor. They were helped to the win by the Womack brothers, with Ben Scoring once and Dave registering an important brace.

Everest registered their fourth consecutive home win on Wednesday night with a comfortable 4-0 win over High Green Villa. Andy Taylor was on target twice for the mid-table outfit, scoring once from the spot.

each. Packhorse remain bottom-of-the-table. Royal Earl made it four wins from their last five league games, with a 4-1 away win over Hackenthorpe A. The win takes Royal Earl into third position.

Division One There was big drama in the Division One this week. It all started on Monday night. Firstly, league leaders Athersley Recreation Reserves faced second bottom Thorncliffe at Thorncliffe playing fields. Sadly, for Athersley they could only manage a point, with a 1-1 draw. The point was also important for Thorncliffe, as it lifted them up one place. Unaware of the result, second placed Oughtibridge WMFC travelled to Park Road to face Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves. Oughtibridge were in a clinical mood once again, registering a 3-0 win. The win put Oughtibridge within two points of the leaders. This completed Athersley’s fixtures, so Oughtibridge knew a win over fourth placed Penistone Church Reserves on the weekend would give them the title. Oughtibridge got their win over Penistone thus securing the title, but this came in a nervous fashion, taking the points with a 2-1 win. As mentioned, Thorncliffe grabbed a vital point against Athersley on Monday night. They followed this up on Saturday with a further point. They drew 0-0 at Ruby Cook Playing fields against Bramley Sunnyside Juniors. Thorncliffe end their first season in Division One since promotion in a third from last position. Elsewhere, Hallam Reserves were 4-3 winners over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves in a thriller at Sandygate on Wednesday night. The win takes Hallam up to fifth position.

Division One Rawson Spring have had an excellent week, climbing to the top of Division One. Firstly, a hat-trick from 20 year old Alex Torr inspired them to a 7-0 on Thursday night against third placed Penistone Church. Torr went one better on Sunday, scoring four as Rawson beat Winn Gardens 7-1 at the Meadowhall Soccer School. Rawson are a point clear of second placed Arbourthorne, who have two games in hand of them. Penistone Church bounced back from their 7-0 defeat to Rawson Spring, by beating HSBC 7-4 away. Tim Council was on target three times (once from the penalty spot). Intake Ball Inn and Hackenthorpe B played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at Warminster Road on Sunday.

Meadowhall League On Thursday night Handsworth Turf Tavern defeated Arbourthorne EA 1-0 in a replay of their S&HCFA Senior Cup Semi Final. Handsworth will play Athersley Recreation in the final on Wednesday 8th May. Premier Division Crookes notched back-to-back wins to strengthen their title challenge, and take top spot. They were 2-1 winners over Hackenthorpe on Thursday, and were 2-1 winners over Wadsley Bridge WMC at Warminster Road. They are three points clear, but second placed Handsworth Turf Tavern do have a game in hand. Brunsmeer Abbey AJW ended a run of three league defeats in style on Sunday, with a 5-1 away win over Packhorse Inn. Both Joseph Highfield and Aaron Moxam were in fine form for Brunsmeer scoring twice

Division Two League leaders Hurlfield were 6-3 winners over Wadsley FC on Thursday night at the Niagra Sports Club, in what is their final league game of the season. However, their lead at the top was cut to just a point on Sunday, when second placed City Taxis (Stradbroke) beat third placed Bystrany Sheffield 4-1 at the Civil Service Ground. City Taxis are next in action on Thursday night against SWD. Norton Athletic were 3-0 winners over Mosborough B at home on Thursday night. They followed that up with another clean-sheet on Sunday, as they beat Wadsley FC 4-0 at Niagra Sports Club. Cricketers 2012 claimed their first win since February, with a 4-2 win over Mosborough B at Handsworth Grange School. The win takes Cricketers off the bottom and above Wadsley FC. U21 Division Dronfield Town U21’s are turning up the heat on the league leaders in the U21 Division. Dronfield were 6-0 winners over Swinton Spartans U21’s on Thursday. They were also emphatic 12-0 over mid-table Woodhouse JFC U21’s on Sunday. That is the second time that Dronfield have won 12-0. Dronfield are now third, but are only two points behind leaders Sheffield U21’s, who lost 2-1 to Abbey Lane U21’s on Sunday. Dronfield also have two games in hand of the leaders. In another result that fell in Dronfield’s favour, second placed Throstles U21’s were defeated 5-4 by Greasborough U21’s. The result leaves Throstles second on goal difference.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 BLADES FINISH WITH A GOALLESS SHOW SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades recorded a club record 21st clean sheet of the season in the final fixture of the regular campaign. Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Preston was the first goal-less encounter between the teams since 1906. Both sides created a number of chances and George Long earned his clean sheet with one particularly impressive save from Jack King. Teenage striker Ironside was handed his first start as temporary boss Morgan rotated his squad once again, in addition, Hill, Kitson and Murphy all returned to the starting line-up. Porter, Forte and Robson dropped to the bench and Higginbotham missed out through injury. A slow start coincided with a heavy shower before the sun reappeared and Unitedites had to wait until 10 minutes had elapsed before the first chance. Ironside looked to have been fouled

by Buchanan but the referee played on and McDonald’s shot was well held by goalkeeper Rudd. Collins was the first in the book, following a foul, and both Hill and Hayhurst sufficiently recovered from a nasty-looking clash of heads on 18 minutes. Westlake displayed his pace to halt a Preston breakaway soon after, timing his tackle well on Holmes. Although for the remainder of the half United could argue they had seen more of the ball, chances were very limited, until the stroke of half-time. On 44 minutes, Maguire fired over a free-kick after Hill had been fouled by Hayhurst and then Collins headed wide a Westlake free-kick. The Blades made a bright start to the second period and created two chances in the first five minutes. After Kitson had flicked on, McFadzean, operating from the right, raced forward but saw his shot blocked by the legs of the onrushing goalkeeper and then Ironside flicked a header over from Westlake’s cross. Preston then hit back with a series of efforts, Welsh and Foster failed to find the target but on 56 minutes, from Welsh’s cross, King’s header looked to be heading to the net but Long clawed the ball out. Taking over from Kitson on the hour, it is fair to say Porter made an immediate impression - he took two minutes to force the ball into the net at the Kop end but a

linesman spotted a handball and referee Rushton disallowed the goal and booked the substitute. Robson replaced McFadzean, quickly followed by Whitehouse taking over from McDonald, but Preston accumulated a couple more chances, Holmes hit the top of the crossbar with a free-kick and Monakana fired over. Ironside and Robson had efforts blocked, whilst Doyle’s long-ranger was deflected before Rudd collected. In the final five minutes, Porter had the Kop on their feet but his effort from Murphy’s cross was blocked, whilst Collins saw his late header from a free-kick punched off the line by Rudd. In injury-time King was denied by Long, even though the whistle was blown for a foul by the Preston frontman, whilst the last chance fell to substitute Whitehouse, after a Robson run, but Foster managed to get in a vital block. Blades: Long, Westlake, Maguire, Hill, Doyle, McDonald (Whitehouse 76), Kitson (Porter 60), Collins, Murphy, Ironside, McFadzean (Robson 71). Unused: Forte, Chapell, Barry, Coyne. Preston: Rudd, Keane (Procter 79), Huntington, Wroe, Holmes, Buchanan, Welsh, Mousinho, King, Hayhurst (Monakana 65), Wright (Foster 45). Unused: Stuckmann, Cummins, Byrom, Garner.

GETTING ON THE FRONT FOOT SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Chris Morgan gave his thoughts on the goalless draw with Preston North End, before looking forward to Friday’s first-leg clash with Yeovil Town on Friday night. On the stalemate with the Lilywhites, Morgan remarked: “We obviously wanted a win but it wasn’t to be. It was one of those games where it was always going to be down to us to get on the front foot and force the issue. “In fairness to Preston they had nothing but pride to play for and on the final whistle their season was over and they could look forward to the summer and pre-season. “The positive was to keep a clean sheet ahead of potential three massive games and as we proved last season if you don’t concede it only takes one break at the other end to progress. “We have a great crop of young players coming through, but they needed the experience of the crowd at Bramall Lane. Saturday will give them a good taste of what it will be like when over 20,000 are in the stadium.

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 POSH DEFEAT TAKES CAMPAIGN TO THE LAST SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Wednesday went down to a 1-0 defeat at Peterborough as a Grant McCann free kick was the difference in a hard-fought basement battle. It was an ultimately fruitless afternoon, the Owls created little to trouble Posh, who gave their safety hopes a significant shot in the arm. But Dave Jones’ side head into next Saturday’s season finale against Middlesbrough at Hillsborough with their destiny in their own hands, knowing victory will guarantee survival. On another day of Championship drama that saw Wolves slip closer to the trapdoor, the Owls went into the London Road clash knowing a point would secure safety. And backed by 5,000 travelling fans, they started brightly enough, as did the home side through the early exchanges. Ten minutes in, the first opening came and it went Peterborough’s way. Lee Tomlin carved a chance from relatively little and forced a fine save from Chris Kirkland. The ball rebounded back to Tomlin, who squared to Dwight Gayle, but Miguel Llera was on hand to clear the danger as the Posh marksman was about to pull the trigger from close range. Danny Pugh then thwarted Gayle at the back post following a deep cross

from McCann before the Owls almost profited from their first chance of the game on 26 minutes when a Giles Coke snapshot was well saved by Bobby Olejnik. The Posh keeper then came to the rescue from the resulting corner when Pugh’s flag kick was directly on its way into the back of the net. Seyi Olofinjana blasted goalwards moments later as Wednesday enjoyed a brief purple patch and it took a brave block from Gabriel Zakuani to deny the loanee midfielder a maiden goal for his temporary employers. Play evened out as the interval approached but both sides had sights of goal, with a Gayle shot smothered by Kirkland before Anthony Gardner headed narrowly wide from another dangerous Pugh corner. The Owls enjoyed the better of possession after the restart, limiting Posh to scant opportunities from distance, without asking too much of Olejnik at the other end. But everything changed on 64 minutes, when Peterborough stole into the lead. Wednesday conceded a free kick 25 yards from goal and McCann struck an unstoppable angled drive that flew past Kirkland. With the celebrations barely over, Posh almost immediately doubled their advantage. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing burst down the right and sent in a teasing low cross that just evaded the onrushing Gayle as the hosts turned the screw. Kirkland then saved from Tomlin at the near post and Wednesday were desperate for an outlet to avert the pressure. They did improve to that end in the closing stages and substitute Leroy Lita had a double chance to snatch a late point but his first shot was saved by Olejnik and the second blasted wide.

DOWN TO US SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Owls defender Anthony Gardner has said the squad will quickly pick themselves up and get straight down to the business of preparing for the season finale. Wednesday host Middlesbrough at Hillsborough on Saturday and need victory to guarantee second tier survival. Following defeat against Peterborough, the Owls head into the last day of the season with destiny still in their own hands - one point clear of the drop. “The key thing is it’s down to us what will happen,” Gardner said. “The boys all know what is needed and we’ll give it everything we have next week. “We have to be positive, we have a home game against Middlesbrough on the final day and we need to get a result, it’s as simple as that. “It’s the last game of the season, it’s in our hands but we need the points to guarantee that we stay in this division.” Boro have endured a stuttering end to the term with just one win in ten and seven defeats from that spell but Gardner is expecting nothing less than a difficult afternoon in S6. He added: “There’s never a good time to play any team. Middlesbrough are safe and can come here and play without pressure. “They will come to Hillsborough and try to do a professional job and we have to match that and use our strengths to win the game. “It’s a huge game and we’ll be aiming to go out there and get the three points that are up for grabs. Of course there is added pressure but that’s the nature of this game.” Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

BUXTON NAMED PLAY OF THE YEAR SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Last week, the polls were open for fans to select their Player of the Year via the official website and the Owls defender took the honours with 35 per cent of the vote. The 29-year-old, who is into his fifth campaign at Hillsborough, has made 43 appearances this season and has been a mainstay in the Owls’ rearguard throughout the term. Buxton said: “I’m really happy and would like to thank everybody who took the time to vote, I really appreciate that. “It’s a shame the season hasn’t gone as well as we had wanted but hopefully we can finish the season on a high with a win on Saturday and stay in the Championship. “When it’s the fans that have voted for you, it always means a lot. It’s been a difficult season but the supporters have always come in their numbers and really spurred us on. We have needed them.” Close behind Buxton in the Player of the Year vote was Chris Kirkland with 27 per cent, followed by Anthony Gardner and Michail Antonio in jointthird place with 11 per cent. Thank you to all supporters who took the time to cast their vote.
