SPORT ENGLAND SCHEME LAUNCHED IN SHEFFIELD A London 2012 legacy project aimed at getting more than 400 Sheffield people participating and retained in sport has launched in the city. Get Sheffield Fit, part of the £32 million National Lottery Sportivate programme, is being run by Sheffield International Venues (SIV). Designed to capture the excitement generated following the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, the new multi-sport programme offers discounted sports coaching and fitness memberships for teenagers and young adults. People aged between
14 and 25 years old can sign up for eight weeks of one-to-one coaching in a range of sporting activities including golf, ice skating, park running, athletics, judo and self defence, boxing, table tennis, trampolining, dance, cycling, mixed martial arts and the gym. The sessions will take place at the SIV-operated English Institute of Sport Sheffield, Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre, iceSheffield, Springs Leisure Centre, Concord Sports Centre and Hillsborough Leisure Centre. Get Sheffield Fit has been launched following a successful pilot and is supported by Sheffield
City Council and South Yorkshire Sport. Lorenzo Clark, operations director at SIV, said: “Get Sheffield Fit is a fantastic new scheme targeting those who are not currently choosing to take part in sport, or are doing so for a very limited amount of time. “We’re aiming to get more than 400 people involved in sport and, importantly, give them the support to continue with regular physical activity within their community. “It’s fully inclusive, in line with our existing participation strategies and a great opportunity to be part of the legacy of the London 2012
Games with one-to-one sessions.” Sports membership is £10 for eight weeks of coaching and the gym is £28 for three months membership and eight
one-to-one sessions. Those who sign up will get free tickets for concerts. For more information about getting involved visit getsheffieldfit. co.uk/

Copley’s Column
This week, Paul Shane passed away. It is always sad when we lose a national treasure, more so when he was a friend. Paul, the most unassuming man in the world, was born seventy two years ago in Thrybergh, Rotherham and spent his early life working as a miner at Silverwood Colliery. He had an accident in 1967, slipping in the pit-head baths on some soap which resulted in double herniated discs. He was pensioned off from Silverwood, aged twenty seven. As he had spent the previous ten years singing in local clubs and pubs as a part time entertainer, he made the decision to become a full time entertainer. As time went on, he gradually introduced comedy into his act and became the funniest man on the circuit. During the seventies he secured small parts in television and his big break came in 1979 when comedy writer Jimmy Perry, who for two years had been looking for the ideal person to play Ted Bovis in the soon to be launched top series Hi-de Hi, spotted Paul playing Frank Roper in Coronation Street. Immediately, he knew he had found his man, and Paul was signed up for the part. The series, massively popular, ran for eight years from 1980. Then, Perry and co-writer David Croft, wrote the pilot episode of ‘You Rang M’Lord’ and offered the role of Alf Stokes to Paul, and the show was successful from 1988 until 1993. In 1997 ,he appeared in two series of Oh Doctor Beeching as Jack Skinner. Many theatre appearances followed together with regular parts in Emmerdale and Holby City. Paul was a popular entertainer in Blackpool and starred in pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk in 2008 and had a guest appearance in Touch of Frost where he played ‘ Diesel Bob’ In 2009, he underwent heart by-pass surgery and
made a successful recovery. He was a popular member of our ‘ celebrity breakfast club’ held on Thursday mornings at the Chantry Hotel in Dronfield, hosted by showbusiness legends, Roy and Jackie Toaduff and regulars include Bernie Clifton, Jimmy Patton, Bobby Dennis, Billy Flywheel, Nancy from the Kaye Sisters, Bobby Knutt, Mel Day, Lance Edwards, Terry Herrington and occasional appearances, work permitting, by Sunny Daye, Diana Edwards, Stephanie King, Jill Alex, John Alex, Jimmy Carol and John Reilly. It was conversations with Paul at breakfast that I gained an insight into what a wonderful down to earth man he was. He was much respected by his peers, and Jeffrey Holland and Su Pollard and his agent, Linda Kremer all made long journeys to say their last goodbyes. Locally, he was visited by Bernie Clifton, Jackie Toaduff, Bobby Knutt, Bobby Dennis and yours truly. I have two nights of superb entertainment this week, firstly on Friday where along with a large party I enjoyed some first class food and was entertained by top duo Agnetha and Frida, a great Abba tribute at Viva Tequila at Gleadless town end and on Saturday night at the Wellington, New Whittington where top band The Canyon were well received, and I was well impressed by their new girl singer, Tina.

Following the triumphant 2010 and 2011 UK theatre tours, the smash hit Queen and Ben Elton musical, ‘We Will Rock You’ announces the show will embark on its first ever world arena tour, stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield from 30th May – 2nd June 2013. Former Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy and X Factor finalist and West End actress Brenda Edwards are to star in the first ever We Will Rock You Arena Tour, following their previous success in the roles. Kevin Kennedy, best known for his role as ‘Curly Watts’ in the long running soap Coronation Street, will reprise the role of ‘Pop’, a librarian who is stuck in his ‘hippie’ past and is searching to find answers to the end of rock music. Brenda Edwards who rose to fame in ITV1’s talent show ‘The X Factor’ will again play the domineering role of ‘Killer Queen’, Head of Globalsoft, the corporation responsible for the banning of all instruments and musical originality. Kevin and Brenda are currently starring in the West End production at the Dominion Theatre and will join the UK leg of the world tour to perform in Nottingham, Sheffield and Newcastle. They will be joined by MiG Ayesa (Rock of Ages, Thriller Live) who will be reprising the role of ‘Galileo’ after successful international and West End runs since 2005 and Lucie Jones, who shot to fame as an X Factor finalist in 2009 and went on to perform in Les Miserables will perform the role of Meat. Speaking about the tour, Kevin Kennedy said: “I’m so excited to return to the We Will Rock You Tour, especially to be a part of the first ever Arena Tour, rocking out to thousands of fans every night. It’s going to be huge!” Brenda Edwards is equally thrilled: “I love performing as Killer Queen and can’t wait to take We Will Rock You back on the road!” Lauren Samuels will return to the role of Scaramouche after her run at the Dominion in 2011/2012. Khashoggi will be played by Sean Kingsley who has appeared in Les Miserables, Cats, and Billy Elliot. With 24 of Queen’s biggest hits delivered in a show that boasts the scale and spectacle that marked the bands’ legendary live performances, this will be one of the most spectacular musicals to tour the world. On announcing the Arena tour, Queen’s Brian May said: “After our first 10 years in Rock Theatricality, this is the next giant step for WWRY - and the show will feature a brand new arena-size design - a big night out for all!” The last WWRY UK tour visited six cities across 13 months. The tour sold over half a million tickets, setting and smashing box office records and was crowned the UK’s favourite show at the prestigious Olivier awards. The London production of the show has just celebrated its 10th birthday and it is the longest running musical ever staged at the West End’s Dominion Theatre, booking until October 2012. The show has thrilled over seven million people in the UK, and close on 15 million people in 17 countries worldwide. The production is directed by Ben Elton, with Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor as music supervisors, Arlene Phillips oversees the musical staging and choreography. Writer Ben Elton has fashioned a hilarious futuristic comedy around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs delivered in a show that boasts the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances. “This show is all about legend,” says Ben Elton. “We take the legend of Queen and create our own fantastical story of young kids battling the might corporations who want to suppress their individuality and their love of music. They need a hero who can help them in their struggle, and we have two – the dreamer Galileo and the sassy rock chick Scaramouche. Guess who ends up winning?” Brian May adds: “The amazing bonus is that Ben’s script subtly works as a metaphor too. People definitely come out of the theatre feeling that in a strange way they now know us, Queen, and our struggle, our journey.” Tickets for the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield shows are priced £42.50, £39.50, £32.50, £29.50 & £22.50 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale in person at the Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

An American couple, Jim & Shanna, both bona fide rednecks had 9 children. They went one day to the doctor to see about getting Jim ‘fixed’. The doctor said he’d be glad to assist but asked them after nine children why they wanted the procedure doing? Jim replied that he had seen an article in the paper that one out of every ten children in the America was Mexican and they didnt went to take the chance on having a Mexican baby as neither of them could speak Spanish. --------------------------------------------------------My wife accused me of ruining her birthday yesterday. “Rubbish!” I said. “I didn’t even know it was your birthday.” --------------------------------------------------------The electricity company called me and said, “The meter readings you provided us with seem to be suspiciously low.” I said, “Yeah, I’ve never read the meter. I have a system where I just decide beforehand how much I feel like paying, then work out the figures to suit.” “Sir, you can’t do that!” they said. I replied, “Well, it’s a system that seems to work all right for you a*******s.” --------------------------------------------------------I think I got ripped off with this scrabble set I bought from the tourette’s charity shop. There’s only four F’s in the box. Mind you, there’s ninety six asterisks, so it’s probably genuine.

Angel Cards There are hundreds of angels and they all have names. We all have a special angel and when we allow ourselves to receive our angels’ messages, all aspect of our lives become more tranquil. Angel cards can help us achieve this. They are gentle cards. I recommend a deck by Doreen Virtue who is the forerunner on the subject of angels. There are others who write about angels (both fiction and non fiction) like Jacky Newcome and Diana Cooper.
Cancer (The Crab) - Angel Gabriel You are other peoples’ strength and hope. Gabriel’s message is ‘you are a sensual creature and being this way will help you keep Mrs/Mr Crab.’ Leo (The Lion) - Angel Raziel Love blooms when you feel good about yourself. Raziel’s message is ‘always preening, your partner is proud to have you on their arm.’ Virgo (The Virgin) - Angel Metatron Whatever you achieve will never be good enough for the perfectionist in you! Metaron’s message is ‘boost your intuitive powers to find your soul mate.’
Libra (The Scales) - Angel Jophiel You have a natural ability to charm people. When I do an angel card reading I ask the client Jophiel’s message is ‘you have the ruling planet to pick their own cards and I do believe that Venus so catch your soul mate in your trap.’ the messages they receive are truly messages from the angels. If I do a postal reading then Scorpio (The Scorpion) - Angel Jeremiel I ask the client to pick twenty numbers. I pick You are intense and sometimes moody. the corresponding cards from the deck and then Jeremiel’s message is ‘you must lower your tape their reading and send it to them. standards if a relationship is to survive.’ Certain angels tally with each birth sign. CASH FEARS SHEFFIELD FOLK ʻROADTESTINGʼ SHEFFIELDʼS FOR OVER 50S TRAIN Helen Jackson CBE, a member of Sheffield 50+, said at the launch at the Showroom Cinema: “The survey shows how aware the over 50s are of the harsh financial climate. Yet they still appreciate the services offered and their own neighbourhoods, even though they don’t recognise the huge part they play Sheffield 50+ aims to give these concerns a louder voice.” One in three people in Sheffield are aged over 50 out of a population of ½ a million. One in four households live in poverty and one in five people are from ethnic minorities. Sheffield tops the list of UK cities from “safe communities” and is one of the greenest cities in the country with two very poplar universities. Walking is a popular leisure activity and Sheffield is known for sport. Helen Jackson, CBE and member of Sheffield 50+ informed in the opening presentation for the launch. Rising costs of gas and electricity, and cash problems are the biggest worries facing older people in Sheffield, the survey revealed. The majority of people cited utilities and poverty as top of their concerns in one of the largest surveys of the ageing population carried out in the city. Loneliness and crime also featured in the top five troubles keeping over 50s awake at night. But it’s not all doom and gloom with twothirds rating their quality of life as good or very good. Nearly half were fairly satisfied by the safety and appearance of their neighbourhood, although 73% felt they had hardly any influence on local decision making. One of the issues highlighted by the survey was that only 10% of carers felt well supported whilst 34% felt unsupported. Chairman Tony Maltby said: “This is a major piece of work that provides a unique insight into the lives of our membership. It is both rigorous and scientific in its approach and is statistically reliable. We urge all agencies to read and act upon its findings. “We will be basing our campaigning work on what we have found and use it to provide empirical evidence when demanded. We wish to thank Maxine Kuczawski from The University of Sheffield for her assistance with the analysis.”

What’s it all about? On the fourth Tuesday of each month we gather on platform 7 (but please check the departure board) at Sheffield Station, to catch the 19:14 train to Manchester which calls at Dore (19:22) and all stations along the Hope Valley, with music from the band throughout the journey. We reach Edale at 19:47, where we alight and transfer to The Rambler, the pub next to the station, where the musical entertainment continues. We take the 21:28 train back to Sheffield - with more music arriving at 22:03. The next outing is on 28 May with Jim McDonald and Friends. The cost is the price of an ordinary day return to Edale which is around £7 from Sheffield, a little less from Dore. Buy your ticket at the ticket office in Sheffield or on-line at www.thetrainline.com if you are boarding at Sheffield. Northern Rail have been known to mount a revenue protection exercise. Strictly speaking, if you board the train without a ticket at Sheffield, you are liable to a substantial penalty fare. As it was, I understand that those who bought their tickets from the revenue protection team had to pay more than they would have done at the ticket office. Apparently, this was because, in such circumstances, you can’t purchase a discounted fare like the Day Return. If you are boarding at Dore or beyond, tickets can be bought from the conductor. NONEMERGENCY? CALL 101
http://www.southyorks.police.uk/contact-us/ contact-us/101 101 is the non-emergency contact numberfor South Yorkshire Police. 101 is the number to call when reporting: • Vandalism and graffiti • Noisy neighbours and loud parties • Threatening and abusive behaviour • Abandoned vehicles • Dumping and fly-tipping • Drunk and rowdy behaviour • Drug-related anti-social behaviour • Broken street lighting All calls cost a flat rate of 15p from landlines and mobiles, whatever the length of the call. Phone companies list these calls in different places on their bills - for example BT include them under Premium Rate (but they only apply the costs above, not Premium Rate charges). Using 101 for situations, that do not require an immediate police response (such as those outlined above) helps keep 999 available for when there is an emergency. If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, you can textphone us on 18001 101 or 0114 2523294 or send and SMS to 07786220022. More information can be found about this service at http://www.southyorks. police.uk/sites/default/files/3649_esms_6.pdf.

DOLCE VITA
NEW SPEAKERSʼ CORNER http://www.speakerscornertrust.org/ speakers-corner-projects/uk-projects/ sheffield/ In January 2013, the Speakers’ Corner Committee shortlisted three sites - the middle of Fargate, the top of Tudor Square and the space in front of the Town Hall – which it felt could provide the space for Sheffield’s new Speakers’ Corner. On 18 May it ‘roadtested’ all three to identify which would work best in terms of footfall, acoustics, space and relationship with neighbouring uses. Armed with a soapbox, three speakers performed at each site. BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Rony Robinson spoke about the great nineteenth century writer, reformer and campaigner Edward Carpenter, who had adopted Sheffield as his home town, and sang a verse of his great anthem England Arise. He was followed by thirteen year-old Jordan Bernard of Meadowhead School who recited her own ’mash-up’ of inspirational pieces she’d chosen, including an extract from Martin Luther King’s great ‘I have a dream’ speech. Finally, local writer and actor Corinne Heritage recited Inaugural Poem, written by American writer Maya Angelou to celebrate the swearing-in of President Bill Clinton in 1993. Each location had distinctive merits: Tudor Square has space and calm; the paving in front of the Town Hall has clear associations with civic life; Fargate has the greatest footfall. Now the Speakers’ Corner Committee will meet to decide which it will promote as Sheffield’s modern day Speakers’ Corner.

PROPERTY TRUSTS AND SECOND MARRIAGES David and Helen were in their second marriage. Both had children from first marriages and step children who they ultimately wanted to protect. But they also wanted to look after each other when the first one died. They wanted to know whether simple wills which left everything to each other and then to their children would be sufficient. A typical mirror will which they already had is
Park View Sports Bar • Park Road • Swinton • Rotherham S64 8JH info@parkviewsportsbar.co.uk •www.parkviewbarandrestaurant.co.uk
great for its simplicity. But there are dangers. What would happen if one died and the other one married again? This would revoke this will automatically and could leave all of the children vulnerable. Another possibility is that there is a fall-out with the stepchildren and they are subsequently cut out of the will. I advised David and Helen to change their wills to include Property Trusts over their house, which was their main asset and which they had both contributed to. This leaves the half share of the first one to die onto a trust for his or her own children, but with a right for the survivor to live in the family home (and move to any new replacement home in the future). There was no possibility that some of the children might miss out on their rightful share in the most important asset. They were happy to trust each other to deal properly with all the other assets. Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors deal with wills; probate; matters affecting the elderly; and conveyancing. They are at 10 Kenwood Park Rd Nether Edge Sheffield. 10 Cats and dogs can show changed behaviour as they get older and spotting dementia in pets can be tricky as the changes can be very gradual and vague, so PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Elaine Pendlebury, has put together a list of signs to look out for, although these can be caused by other conditions such as diabetes. Signs can include: · Confusion or disorientation – getting lost in familiar places, poor concentration and reduced alertness. · Loss of toilet training – affected pets can soil indoors or forget where their litter tray is. · Change of sleeping patterns –sleeping more during the day. · Change in social interaction and relationships – an affected pet may become more withdrawn, seeming depressed · Loss of memory – not responding or a slower response to familiar commands, forgetting previously learnt behaviours and difficulty in learning new tasks as well as failing to recognise familiar surroundings and companions. · Changes in activity – reduced levels of activity or aimless pacing and staring into space. · Changes in vocalisations – howling or crying more than usual · Changes in eating – usually a decrease in appetite, but sometimes an increase occurs as the pet appears to forget it has already eaten. Senior Vet Elaine says:”These signs can indicate a dementia-like condition in pets, but a number of them can also be caused by other diseases, so it’s important to visit your vet as soon as possible to find out what’s wrong with your pet and what treatment might help them. Early detection is important, as this can often result in more successful treatment or management of many conditions, so regular checkups for elderly pets is key.” Owners can also take steps to help pets suffering with this condition: · Avoid moving things in the house – this includes their food / water bowls, beds (and litter trays for cats) as well as other furniture or items around the house. · Increase other environmental clues – for instance familiar smells in certain rooms, or keeping the radio on in a particular room can help navigation. · Encourage interaction – play games you know they enjoy, but keep things gentle. · Re-training – if your pet’s memory allows, use rewardbased training to help them re-learn lost behaviours, such as toilet training and basic commands. The exact causes of cognitive dysfunction aren’t proven, but it’s thought that a good diet, regular mental stimulation (e.g. safe exercising and playing in the garden) and companionship (for social animals like dogs) can all help to reduce the risks of pets developing the disease. Sheffield Theatres is searching for local youngsters to star in the company's Christmas musical, Lionel Bart's multi award-winning masterpiece Oliver!, which takes to the Crucible stage from Friday 29 November 2013 to Saturday 25 January 2014. Based upon the children's novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver! follows the story of an orphan who runs away from a workhouse and falls in with a gang of boys trained to be pickpockets by gang leader, Fagin, and includes well-known songs such as Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, Oom-Pah-Pah and As Long As He Needs Me. This new staging will be directed by Artistic Director Daniel Evans and will be his third musical for the company, following My Fair Lady and This Is My Family, which opens next month. Sheffield Theatres is looking for two boys with a playing age of eleven to share the lead role, Oliver Twist, and two boys with a playing age of fourteen to fifteen to play cheeky Cockney pickpocket, the Artful Dodger. The company is also looking for boys and girls aged from seven to fourteen to play a variety of parts as members of the ensemble. These roles are a fantastic opportunity for children interested in performing to be part of a professional production on a massive scale, getting the chance to work with professional actors, directors and industry experts. Open auditions will take place in Sheffield on Saturday 1 June between 10.00am - 6.00pm in the Rehearsal Room at the Lyceum Theatre. The audition will be a group session where all participants will be taught a song and asked to sing individually, as well as dance. The audition panel will consist of Director Daniel Evans, Choreographer Alistair David and Musical Director Jonathan Gill. Successful auditionees will be called back for a second audition on Sunday 9 June between 10.00am to 6.00pm at the theatre where they will work on an extract of the script and a song. Director Daniel Evans said: Director Daniel Evans said: 'This is a fantastic opportunity for young performers across the region to take part in a large-scale professional production at the Crucible. Oliver! is a great family musical with fantastic parts and a large children's ensemble so there are plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and have an amazing Christmas at the Crucible!' Children who wish to audition must be between the ages of seven and fifteen. Successful auditionees must live within an hour’s drive of Sheffield and must be available throughout the entire rehearsal and production period in Sheffield from Monday 21 October 2013 – Saturday 25 January 2014. Anyone interested in auditioning please download a registration form from sheffieldtheatres.co.uk and return the form to oliverauditions@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk. Oliver! will take to the Crucible stage from Friday 29 November 2013 to Saturday 25 January 2014. Tickets are priced from £17.00 – £32.00*, with discounts available, and can be purchased by calling the Box Office on 0114 249 6000 or by visiting sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

BLUES BROTHERS LOOKING FOR SUPPORT FOR EUROPEAN CHARITY TRIP
Former Mercury employee and local lad Chris Platts along side his friend Mark Dean are looking for help raising money for charity after they entered the Banger Run 2013 in aid of Help for Heroes. Chris who is originally from Barnsley & Mark are serving members of the RAF and are currently based at RAF Northolt working in Personnel Support. The fundraising trip will take them from Dover to Barcelona via France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. This will take 4 days and will encompass some of the greatest driving roads
and sights throughout mainland Europe. To enter the rally they were required to purchase a car that is worth £250 or less. As this year’s rally is movie themed they have chosen to do it as the Blues Brothers having purchased a Volvo 940 which they are looking to turn into the infamous Blues Mobile. All the details regarding the rally can be found at www.bangerrun. com Updates on how the car is progressing beforehand and during the event are published through their Facebook page (www. If you would like to sponsor the vehicle and have your company details displayed on the car please contact Chris at chris.platts389@ mod.uk to discuss details.

GOODBYE TO PAUL SHANE CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
A lot has been written about the local personality Paul Shane, the comedian who died last week aged 72. He became a household name largely due to his portrayal of the character Ted Bovis in the 1980s hit sitcom Hi-di-Hi! The BBC comedy was set in a fictional holiday camp, Maplins, and his character was that of an entertainer who would have liked to have risen a bit further in his field. Paul Shane fortunately did rise from humble origins to stardom: he didn’t need to spend the wintertime demonstrating potato peelers as his alter ego Ted Bovis did! ARCTIC MONKEYS GLASTONBURY
PREVIEW
Words by KT Evans
‘Love to faults is always blind; Always is to joy inclin’d. Lawless, wing’d and unconfin’d, And breaks all chains from every mind.’ Any ideas? No, us neither, although as we’ve seen this William Blake quote above the Glastonbury 2013 line-up, we can guess it suggests that we see not the faults of those around us when we are in love…there is no stopping you. This is exactly what Glastonbury 2013, held from 26th – 30th June at worthy Farm Pilton is all about…but who cares because Arctic Monkeys are headlining! You may or may not have checked out the entire Glastonbury line-up yet (we suggest you give yourself a full afternoon to study the enormous amounts of bands, acts and musicians on the list) however this year prides itself on being the best festival line-up the producers of this summers most anticipated event have ever put on…why is this? Because our favourite Sheffield group and one of the most celebrated bands of the 21st century are headlining the pyramid stage to an audience of over 200,000 people…Arctic Monkeys are back and hell are they doing it with style. We last saw Arctic Monkeys perform at 2011’s V Festival, just months after releasing their fourth studio album ‘Suck It And See,’ therefore we strongly believe a much needed and well deserved Monkeys fix is most definitely on our ‘To Do’ list this summer. With four studio albums under their belt, all of which failed not to pose an opinion on each and everybody who listens to them, Arctic Monkeys are the truest personification of the North. Alex Turner’s song writing ability has not only gone from strength to strength since album one – ‘Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not’ from 2006 which is littered with Sheffield lingo and references in every song, but has got wittier and far more intricate within the progression of each album. Put it this way…we challenge anybody to beat the lyric ‘Love Is A Laserquest’ with enough subliminal understanding and emotion as Alex Turner does within ‘Suck It And See.’ Having been branded our generation’s finest song writer, a speedy listen to the back log of Arctic Monkeys repertoire and it’s easy to hear why. ‘Now Then Mardy Bum’ and ‘When The Two for Ones Undone The Writers Block’ stands as proudly as ‘You’re Rarer Than A Dandelion And Burdock’ or ‘I Etched The Face Of a Stopwatch On The Back Of A Raindrop,’ nothing short of spectacular within the Arctic Monkey’s enormous sounding track list….a major aspect of their live performance and one we simply cannot wait to see live at Glastonbury 2013. Check out www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk for the latest info.

ROD STEWART MOTORPOINT ARENA 23/6/13
PREVIEW Words by KT Evans
It would be an exceptionally hard task to envisage the world’s music industry without soul legend Rod Stewart. Not only one of the most recognisable faces through many walks of life, the sixty something CBE holder not only prides himself on a career spanning through five decades, but also delivering on both an emotional and passionate atmosphere within each and every performance. One not to be missed, Rod Stewart is to bring his Live The Life tour to Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 23rd June. With a repertoire ranging from acoustic ballads to branding his original mark on age old Christmas belters, Rod Stewart is one of the UK’s proudest exports. Tracks ‘Maggie May’ and ‘Sailing’ stand as bold as massive chart topping hits ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest’ and ‘Handbags and Gladrags,’ brought back to life by Welsh rockers Stereophonics in 2002. Now with an unbelievable 100 million record sales to his name, the six time number one chart topping position holder is to delve into the depths of his musical background on the hugely anticipated Live the Life Tour. In a moment of musical history and the purest example to suggest the ground breaking success and following of Rod Stewart, May 2013 saw the performer’s most recent album ‘Time,’ go straight in at number one on the UK album charts. This set a new British record for the longest gap between charttopping albums by an artist – Stewards last number one on the chart was Greatest Hits Volume 1 in an incredible 1979. Representing ‘…a dark period for twenty years…’ the album once again sees Stewart return to song writing to remake many of his most popular classics into rock anthems. No doubt another aspect of his live tour, this is an indication of the timeless nature Rod Stewart harbours for both young and old fans alike. With tickets still available for purchase from Motorpoint Arena, Rod Stewart said: ‘I cannot wait to get back on the road again, especially in the UK where the fans always make it a very special occasion for me. The June tour is going to be fantastic!’ Support for the show comes in the form of electro soulstress Moya – aka Emily Andrews – who is tipped by Radio 2 as one of the rising stars of this year. Having recently released her full length debut ‘Lost & Found,’ we suggest you get down a little earlier to catch another fantastic performance. Tickets are on sale at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk starting at £65. Check out the website for more information.

Following on from last week’s “scent of a man” by Peter Andre, comes the news that Katie Price is releasing a soft chocolate-hazelnut breakfast product. Based on Katie, Sl*tella spreads easy and there’s nothing it won’t go with. Also like Jordan, it’s good first thing in the morning if you fancy a quick gobble on the go. We can only wish Katie the best of luck with that. It was the finale of Doctor Who last weekend and I’m now convinced he’s making it up as he goes along. I’m talking about Steven Muppet (I mean Moffat) - the brains behind Doctor Who, who has a master plan, apparently. Muppet’s goal is to write unfathomable crap of such complexity that the media and viewing public have no choice but to call it genius. It’s really quite clever. It’s just like Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights album, which was little more than screeching with notes only dogs could hear but no one knew any better back in the day so they all thought it was amazing (even though it caused deafness in a small number of listeners). And it’s the same with Doctor Who (only replace deafness with brain damage). The new series is so mind-numbingly banal that it can actually reduce IQs by up to ten points. I hear the Korean Government is considering using it to soften up the populace for the next world big publicity drive. You will cry when Kim Jong Un drives past (quick, stick on Asylum of the Daleks). The finale of Doctor Who was an utter load of cyber crap. Like every other episode this season, it meandered along pointlessly, relying on the most the most baffling explanations and contrivances while utterly fobbing off glaring plot holes that made some of the Governments most outrageous lies seem painfully honest in comparison. Here’s an example. The Doctor stated that the John Hurt character was NOT the Doctor (in name at least) as he broke the promise the Doctor made (presumably to stay clear of sex abuse scandals and to avoid caffeine after midnight*). Yet as Hurt turns around and gives that old man stare into the middle distance, there, flashing on screen, in true numbskull-o-vision, come the words “Starring John Hurt as the Doctor”. Oooh dramatic! Sigh. It’s either one or the other. Matt Smith had just said that Hurt WASN’T the Doctor and didn’t take his name, so, what does Moffat do... he goes and contradicts himself with captions for the ultrastupid. It’s all for dramatic effect, but it’s just ridiculous bullcrap that makes absolutely no sense at all. But don’t worry, Muppet sooths in another of his good-writer propaganda interviews, it’ll all make sense after the fiftieth anniversary special. Well, thanks, Moff, but I won’t hold my breath for clarity any time soon. Sure, Doctor Who is kids’ TV, but as a vast
proportion of its audience are adults, does it really need to be so vapid? A great TV show for adults is Gravity Falls; it’s like a comedy X Files for kids. Only in cartoon form. And there’s plenty of references and general silliness that only adults will get. It’s totally brilliant and utterly bonkers! Now that’s how you write a TV show which appeals to all ages! Moffat’s Doctor Who is amateurish in comparison. A lot of people (well, two) have said I should quit beating off on Doctor Who** and that I should just stop watching the show. Well I’ve tried to walk away from Doctor Who but it’s like crack. Once you thrust yourself up the back alley of addiction, it’s impossible to go back to just watching without comment and / or attacks of blood-boiling rage. That said: if the show were actually any good then I wouldn’t have much to talk about. Fortunately for me, Doctor Who contains more crap than a boatload of immigrants trapped in a metal haulage container (and we all know those things aren’t fitted with an en-suite bathroom - they’re pooptastic!) And lastly, it would be remiss of me to fail to mention the other disaster on Saturday. It was a total eclipse of the farce as Bonnie Tyler managed an “epic” score of 23 points in the Eurovision, which, admittedly was better than last year’s 12 points from crinkly crooner, Englebert Humperdink. This shows that the UK is universally loathed, which is interesting as Eastern Europe might not vote for us, but they’re all happy to come here and nick our jobs. Calm down! I jest... I jest... …I really don’t! Oh and finally, it was announced today that Dancing on Ice would see its final season in 2014. Don’t care? Thought not. Why, exactly, is this news? Anyhoo, that’s my creative load blown for another week. More smut next Wednesday! *That might as well have been the promise. It could equally have been to vote UKIP! **You may think I meant to say “beating up” but l know exactly what I mean...

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
Where has the fun gone? Don’t get me wrong, I still really look forward to my time on the bank, but it seems to be all about “..... mine is bigger than yours!” As you know, I often spend time trawling internet sites (not those!) to see what everyone else is up to, and I’m appalled by the amount of slander which goes on...... This week I have been happily sitting by the banks of a Cheshire fishery (Gawsworth Fisheries) watching the ‘tip go round, enjoying the sunshine, listening to the bees lazily fly past and generally relaxing. I enjoy my bream fishing, and was somewhat disgruntled on being approached by an angler who immediately informed that me gleefully I “.... wouldn’t catch carp like that mate” I know; I’m an angler, not a carper, although I can catch them (by design too sometimes!) when required. The intruder then wandered back to his guffawing mates who, unlike me, were sat behind silent, motionless indicators....so where does this instant judgement come from?? I love spending time out talking to other compatriots on the bank; I find out loads of information I can use to improve my fishing, or about new tackle, or about nature and the surroundings. Older anglers are usually willing to reminisce about times and methods gone by and I would never dream of judging an angler by their choices! Fish for tench? Fine by me.... Gudgeon? Great fun and very pretty fish.... You fish for eels? Interesting, tell me more! How about perch? I love those too! Where do one species or one water anglers get off telling the rest of us how to enjoy our angling? I go fishing for me, not them, so don’t you dare tell me what I should and shouldn’t be doing; that’s your opinion (which of course I respect) not mine! If I tell someone when asked I’ve just caught a 10lbs carp, invariably the retort is “.....I’ve had a 20lb carp out of here.” Why!!!! Why not just say “...well done”? It’s even worse on the internet; remarks about disbelieving weights, ‘noddies’, clothing, venue choice and whatever else you can think of are all subject to snide comment or downright slanderous ramblings.....well, I’ve started to fight back! If I’m on a venue where a ‘disbeliever’ appears and subsequently dismisses my choice of angling, then I will tell him I’ve caught a 30lbs sturgeon or other nonexistent species and wait for him to tell me that his was 40lbs.....then we’ll see who really is the angler, and who is the Billy Liar! I’ve done it before, at a venue in Staffordshire which had just been stocked with nothing bigger than around 15lbs, only to be confronted by an angler who immediately claimed the lake record at much bigger weights....most embarrassed when told by the owner “....I’ve just stocked it mate, nothing that big in here” So, if you want to tell me and thousands like me who just go fishing for some peace and quiet and to catch our choice of fish....you have been warned!

racing form by Timelord
It’s another Classic weekend with Ireland taking centre stage with its Guineas meeting at The Curragh. Here there are three decent Flat meetings featured on Channel 4 presenting some quite attractive contests. Goodwood offers a 10 furlong Listed race and a 7 furlong handicap, York has a 7 furlong Conditions race and a 14 furlong Listed race and Haydock has three on TV culminating with the day’s best race this side of the Irish Sea, the Group 2 Betfred Temple Stakes which follows a couple of handicaps. As always at busy times it is necessary to keep a check on the races that those with multiple entries run in. The Curragh: Saturday: 2.45 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 6f: A pretty competitive Group 3 race is in the offing here. My shortlist comprises: Gordon Lord Byron; Roseraie; Maarek; Gale Force Ten; Slade Power; and Dandy Boy. Marginal preference is for Gordon Lord Byron whose third in last week’s ultra competitive Group 2 Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes reads well. Next best may be Roseraie whose seventh behind Gathering Power in a fast-run Naas Premier Handicap also looks good form. Maarek comes close behind in my estimation but has entries elsewhere. 3.20 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, Group 1, 3yo, 1m: This looks pretty open to me. I quite fancy that the best piece of form on offer could be that from last year’s Racing Post Trophy where Kingsbarns won beating Van Der Neer by 1 ¾ lengths with Andrew Oliver’s First Cornerstone a further 2 lengths adrift and Trading Leather a further 3 ½ lengths behind that one. On that piece of form Richard Hannon’s Van Der Neer comes out on top and also ran well when finishing third to Dawn Approach in our Guineas. First Cornerstone gets the first reserve slot and Trading Leather, who ran well in the Dante, is third in line. Best of the rest could be Ask Dad, followed by Gale Force Ten, Magician and Olympic Glory. 3.55 Abu Dhabi Stakes, Group 3, 4yo+ Fillies and Mares, 1m: Dermot Weld’s Caponata may be able to outclass a decent field following her excellent effort when landing a fast-run Listed contest last time out at Gowran Park. That day she had Aloof 8 ½ lengths in arrears and, although possibly the biggest threat to the selection, I see no reason why she should be able to reverse that form. Based on her run behind Sapphire in a Group 2 race at Ascot last October Was could be the next best after the above two, followed by Lily’s Angel who ran well when winning a Group 3 contest at Lingfield last time. Sunday: 3.20 Tattersalls Gold Cup, Group 1, 4yo+, 1m 2f 110yds: Sapphire comes out best in my reckoning and may have too many guns for St Nicholas Abbey and the globe-trotting Red Cadeaux. The others are headed by (in order of preference): Aloof; Was; Hunter’s Light; Sajjhaa; and Light Heavy.
the call here. Fourth in that race, and therefore first reserve here, was Allnecessaryforce. After this pair I like Shrewd ahead of Lady Artiste. 3.15 Betfred.com Silver Bowl, Handicap, 3yo, 1m: In my estimation Code of Honor should be good enough to land this prize from Annie’s Fortune and Montiridge. Georgian Bay, Alhebayeb, Autspread, Baltic Knight and Hay Dude are others that could figure prominently. 3.50 Betfred Temple Stakes, Group 2, 5f: The unbeaten, dual Group 1 winner Reckless Abandon gets a confident vote to open up this season with a win. His form looks to me to well ahead of the others here. Maarek, Swiss Spirit, Bogart, Mince Humidor, Ballesteros and York Glory look to head the dangers but none should be able to cope with the selection if he turns out fit enough to do himself justice. York: 1.50 Escrick Conditions Stakes, 3yo+, 7f: Tariq Too gets the vote narrowly from Pleine Form, Morache Music, Beacon Lodge and Redact. He will however need to be at his best for this seasonal re-appearance as one or two of the others look to be running themselves into pretty decent form, notably Pleine Form and Beacon Lodge. A big run from Pintura may not be out of the question either while Ajraam could yet be anything. 2.20 Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup, Listed, 4yo+, 1m 6f: Oriental Fox’s sixth to Sir John Hawkwood in a 12 furlong handicap here last week could be good enough to secure this. The dangers look to me to be headed by (in order): Sohar; Cousin Khee; High Jinx; and Mad Moose. UK Selection Summary (for reserves in the event of absences see above): Goodwood: 2.05 Questioning 3.35 George Rooke Haydock: 2.40 Rundell 3.15 Code of Honor 3.50 Reckless Abandon York: 1.50 Tariq Too 2.20 Oriental Fox Irish racing summary: The Curragh: Saturday: 2.45 Gordon Lord Byron 3.20 Van Der Neer 3.55 Caponata Sunday: 3.20 Sapphire 3.55 Big Break Good Luck!
GOLF TOURS
3.55 Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas, Group 1, 3yo Fillies, 1m: Dermot Weld’s Big Break gets the vote in a fascinating contest. Best of the rest may be Orpha whose fourth behind Pavlosk at York last week was an improved effort on what she had shown before and could be on the upgrade. After her my order of preference is: Hanky Panky; Karamaya; Hazy Glow; Just Pretending; Hint of a Tint; Mizzava; and Uleavemebreathless.
Saturday UK Channel 4 races: Goodwood: 2.05 32Red Festival Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m 1f 192yds: Questioning gets the call to prevail over Chapter Seven, Afsare, Genzy and Mobaco although Cameron Highland would be a major threat if recapturing the form of his soft ground Windsor Listed race win last August. This looks to me to be a quite tight contest. 3.35 32Red Handicap, 3yo, 7f: From his last time out seventh placed effort in a competitive 3yo handicap at York won by Lancelot Du Lac George Rooke gets the vote here. That looked to be a very decent contest to me and the form could work out well. Next best could be Hairy Rocket although there are many dangers in this open event. Haydock: 2.40 Betfred TV Handicap, 3yo, 0-100, 1m 3f 200yds: I reckon that the key piece of form could be the 12furlong handicap at York last week won by Esteaming in a good time for the conditions. Second in that race was Richard Hannon’s Rundell who gets

Football Round Up ANTONIO’S AIM SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday forward Michail Antonio is aiming to come back fitter and stronger for the forthcoming campaign. Antonio is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation after a groin injury prematurely ended the 23-yearold’s season in March. Buoyed by his progress in the treatment room, Antonio has his eyes set on making his return for the Owls, who confirmed their place in the Championship on the final day of the 2012/13 campaign. He told swfc.co.uk: “I’m doing really well with my rehab and the healing process is going quicker than expected. “I’ve got work to do over the summer to get me where I need to be but I’m looking forward to joining back up with the lads and get playing again.” Antonio of course had a watching brief as the Owls faced Boro and was delighted to see his team mates achieve the target of safety at Hillsborough. The forward admitted it was a tough game to watch and a tense afternoon in general but was full of praise for how Wednesday went about their jobs. “I think staying in this division is harder to achieve than gaining promotion into it,” Antonio said. “It was so important we remained in the Championship. It was hard to watch and it was a game I wanted to be involved in. “But I thought the lads did an unbelievable job and deserved the three points.” Having finished as the Owls’ top scorer with nine goals and top creator, also with nine assists, Antonio’s aim is to better those totals next season. He added: “One of the things I set out to do was be up there at the top with assists but to score nine goals in my first season at this level is really pleasing and now I have to look to beat that next season.”
BACK TO ACTION FOR GEORGE SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
George Long has linked up with England’s U20s squad this week as preparations begin for the forthcoming World Cup campaign, which starts in June. The goalkeeper, one of four stoppers named in Peter Taylor’s provisional 35-man squad on Friday, is now focused on securing a spot on the plane to Turkey, as part of the final 21-man squad for the finals. Speaking about his call-up, Long commented: “I found out a couple of weeks and I was honestly surprised. “I am obviously delighted to have earnt this recognition, but it wouldn’t have been possible had it not being for the players and the coaching staff, particularly goalkeeping coach, Darren Ward. “To have had the opportunity to make over 40 appearances this season has far surpassed my expectations at the beginning of the season, but to be honest I have just been allowed to concentrate on my football and I am grateful for the all the help and support I have received. “If I hadn’t had being exposed to so much action, I wouldn’t have been in the provisional squad, but now I want to work hard during the next couple of weeks of training and make sure I make the final cut. “We are training this week in Cheshire then, after a week off, we are heading for another week’s training at St George’s Park in Burton.” The other goalkeepers in the squad are Jamal Blackman (Chelsea), Sam Johnstone (Manchester United) and Connor Ripley (Middlesbrough).

DICKOV DELIGHT PRE-SEASON PLANS DRFC NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk
Chairman John Ryan told the Rovers website that he was delighted that the club had appointed Paul Dickov as manager. The decision on the management situation was finalised this just a few hours before the press conference to unveil the new man in charge. John admitted that he was a long-time admirer of Paul Dickov and was delighted that the other owners were in agreement that he was the right person move the club forward. “We’ve gone through a very exhaustive process and there have been some great applicants,” he said. “We got down to the last two and only made the decision this morning but I’m absolutely delighted with the appointment of Paul Dickov. “Paul is someone I have admired for a long time, I watched the way he handled Oldham against us and I was very impressed. “When Dean [Saunders] left Brian [Flynn] took over and did a great job but now we feel that we have got Paul Dickov to take us to another level in the Championship; we don’t want to be scurrying at the bottom we want to be up the league. “We have got to stop having the mentality that if we finish fourth from bottom we will be happy, we won’t be happy with that. We want to finish high up in the table, I don’t know how high we can go only time will tell. With our team spirit and the players that we have combined with the ones we have earmarked to come in I think we can get together a really good side and surprise a few people in the Championship. “Paul has got some great contact and I am sure he will bring in some quality players who will compliment what is already a strong side. “We’ve got a good record of choosing managers so we hope we have got this one right – I think we have. “It was a unanimous decision to bring Paul in. All in all we are all happy with the appointment because Paul is a very hard working guy who is motivated and ambitious which is just the same as we [the board] are.”
KIT DISTRIBUTED TO KENYA LOCAL FOOTBALL www.sheffieldfa.com Over 3,000 items of football kit have been distributed to people living in some of the most deprived areas in Kenya, as part of the latest Taking Football to Africa and Beyond appeal. Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA has been a strong supporter of the appeal since it was launched by RAF squadron leader Neil Hope MBE in 2006, with the aim of collecting unwanted or donated football shirts or other items of kit and delivering them to Africa. To date over 65,000 items, including 27,000 donated football shirts have been distributed through the appeal. The latest batch of kit contained a huge number of items donated by the Doncaster & District Sunday League, Throstles, Mexborough JFC, Noahs Ark, Handsworth JFC, Frechville JFC, Bessacarr, Dinnigton Town, Nether Green, County FA chairman Brian Jones and Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA. The items will benefit children and adults in the slums of Mathare and Kibera, as well as the Kibagare slum in north west Nairobi, which is populated by around 150,000 people – most of whom live below the poverty line on less than $1 per day. Kit was also distributed to the Woodard Langa Langa Secondary School in Gilgil which educates 120 children, Ole Keene Primary School in Masai Mara and children’s homes and orphanages in Saidia and Sanchat. Clubs, teams, individuals or any other organisation looking to purchase new kit ahead of the 2013/14 season can donate their old items to the appeal by contacting Brian Jones at brian.jones@sheffieldfa. com or Neil on 01939 250351 Ext 7572 or email neil.hope684@mod.uk Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA would like to thank everyone who has donated to the appeal and helped to change the lives of some of Africa’s poorest people.

HALF TERM TOURS AT THE LANE SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
With half-term on the horizon, the Blades are giving the supporters the chance to do something a little different next week. Thursday 30th May will see Bramall Lane open its doors for the Club’s famous ground tours - and Blades legend Tony Currie will be in attendance. The times of the tours will be 10am, 11am, 2pm and 3pm. The tours will start at the SUFC ‘Legends of the Lane’ museum and will take in a look behind the scenes. As this is the time of year that behind the scenes work commences to get the famous stadium ready for the forthcoming season, it will not be possible to walk out onto the playing surface, but Unitedites will have the opportunity to look at the first team dressing rooms, the players’ tunnel, the dug outs and the technical area. Please ensure that you bring along a camera. The tickets can be booked directly through the Ticket Office at Bramall Lane and, as a half-term special offer, you will receive a free concession ticket for every paying adult. Usual prices are £5 for adults and £3 for concessions, so it represents a saving and gives fans a chance to do something a little different to entertain the kids. The tours will be conducted by Club Historian John Garrett and SUFC Ambassador Tony Currie - book now to avoid disappointment. Book over the telephone on 0871 995 1889 or online at www.sufc.talent-sport.co.uk
