OWLS IN THE PARK
Sheffield Wednesday fans of all ages are invited to enjoy a fun-filled day of family entertainment when Owls in the Park, in association with Dennis Hobson Promotions, returns this summer. The free of charge fun day, in conjunction with Sheffield City Council, will take place in Hillsborough Park on Sunday 30 June, and is shaping up to be bigger and better than last year. Following the huge success of the first Owls in the Park, which attracted more than 10,000 fans, the event returns with even more exciting attractions. This year SWFC teams up with local charity Support Dogs to host the county’s biggest fun dog show, there will be demonstrations from South Yorkshire Police and the Fire and Rescue service and the Tropical Butterfly House will showcase their most exotic species. It will also be supporters’ first opportunity to meet Dave Jones’ summer signings, get their 2013/14 shirts autographed, and pose for photos with the players. Family favourites that attracted the crowds last time around will also return with a live music stage, funfair and bouncy castles as well as your chance to meet some real-life Owls. Kids can get involved in a host of activities, such as tennis, dance and martial arts, as part of the SWFC Community Programme’s new Active Owls initiative and enjoy football on their inflatable pitch. There will also be a live music stage which will be showcasing a selection of some of the regions finest up and coming bands throughout the day. Already confirmed to perform at Owls in the Park are: Jessica Steele – Fresh from her appearances on The Voice and Britain’s Got Talent. Kyle Baker – Returning for the second year, one of Sheffield’s brightest acoustic talents. The Black Hands – Widely recognised as one of the best live blues rock bands in the country. More acts will be announced in the coming weeks. Other attractions include; face painters, community dance troupe, car show, zorb balls, climbing tower, food outlets, a licensed bar and much, much more. Supporters will also have the opportunity to bag the new 2013/14 Owls away kit, brand new PUMA training wear and Memberships for the coming season.
A man walks into a bookshop and says “I hope you don’t have a book on reverse psychology.” This woman rushed to see her doctor, looking very much worried and all strung out. She rattles off: “Doctor, take a look at me. When I woke up this morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw my hair all wiry and frazzled up, my skin was all wrinkled and pasty, my eyes were bloodshot and bugging out, and I had this corpse-like look on my face! What’s WRONG with me, Doctor!?” The doctor looks her over for a couple of minutes, then calmly says: “Well, I can tell you that there ain’t nothing wrong with your eyesight....” A doctor says to his patient, “I have bad news and worse news”. “Oh dear, what’s the bad news?” asks the patient. The doctor replies, “You only have 24 hours to live.” “That’s terrible”, said the patient. “How can the news possibly be worse?” The doctor replies, “I’ve been trying to contact you since yesterday.”

NEW STUDY ASKS WHY REGION TOO STOIC FOR STROKE HELP
Marc Randall, consultant in neurology for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Stroke is one of the single largest causes of death, but we believe people in South Yorkshire are less likely to seek help early. This might be because they have a reputation for being stoic and soldiering on regardless. During this study we’ll be asking patients why they didn’t call ‘999’ as soon as they started experiencing stroke symptoms.” Dr Jessica Redgrave, the project lead investigator added: “We’ll also be looking at people’s responses to the national Act F.A.S.T. stroke awareness campaign and how this http://www.sth.nhs.uk/news/ influenced their behaviour when seeking help. news?action=view&newsID=492 Ultimately we want more patients to receive A NEW pilot study asking why people from a clot-busting drug, thrombolysis which can save lives and reduce disability if given within South Yorkshire are less likely to ring ‘999’ four and half hours of stroke onset. BARBECUE FOOD SAFETY
http://www.nhs.uk/livewell/summerhealth/ pages/barbecuefoodsafety.aspx Food poisoning cases double over the summer, so remember these simple steps to help keep food safe. Food poisoning is usually mild, and most people get better within a week. But sometimes it can be more severe, even deadly, so it’s important to take the risks seriously. Children, older people and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to food poisoning. “The safest option is to cook food indoors using your oven,” says a spokesperson from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). “You can then put the cooked food outside on the barbecue for flavour.” This can be an easier option if you’re cooking for a lot of people at the same time. If you are only cooking on the barbecue, the two main risk factors are: • undercooked meat • spreading germs from raw meat onto food that’s ready to eat This is because raw or undercooked meat can contain germs that cause food poisoning, such as salmonella, E.coli and campylobacter. However, these germs can be killed by cooking meat until it is piping hot throughout. Cooking meat on a barbecue When you’re cooking any kind of meat on a barbecue, such as poultry (chicken or turkey), pork, steak, burgers or sausages, make sure: • the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking, as this means that they’re hot enough • frozen meat is properly thawed before you cook it • you turn the meat regularly and move it around the barbecue to cook it evenly Remember that meat is safe to eat only when: • it is piping hot in the centre • there is no pink meat visible • any juices are clear “Don’t assume that because meat is charred on the outside it will be cooked properly on the inside,” says the FSA spokesperson. “Cut the meat at the thickest part and ensure none of it is pink on the inside.” Some meat, such as steaks and joints of beef or lamb, can be served rare (not cooked in the middle) as long as the outside has been properly cooked. This will kill any bacteria
that might be on the outside of the meat. However, food made from minced meat, such as sausages and burgers, must be cooked thoroughly all the way through. Raw meat Germs from raw meat can move easily onto your hands and then onto anything else you touch, including food that is cooked and ready to eat. This is called cross-contamination. Cross-contamination can happen if raw meat touches anything (including plates, cutlery, tongs and chopping boards) that then comes into contact with other food. Some easy steps to help prevent crosscontamination are: • always wash your hands after touching raw meat • use separate utensils (plates, tongs, containers) for cooked and raw meat • never put cooked food on a plate or surface that has had raw meat on it • keep raw meat in a sealed container away from foods that are ready to eat, such as salads and buns • don’t put raw meat next to cooked or partly cooked meat on the barbecue • don’t put sauce or marinade on cooked food if it has already been used with raw meat Keeping food cool It’s also important to keep some foods cool to prevent food poisoning germs multiplying. Make sure you keep the following foods cool: • salads • dips • milk, cream, yoghurt • desserts and cream cakes • sandwiches • ham and other cooked meats • cooked rice, including rice salads Don’t leave food out of the fridge for more than a couple of hours, and don’t leave food in the sun. See the Food Standard Agency’s GermWatch campaign at http://www.food.gov.uk/newsupdates/campaigns/germwatch/resources/#. UaSFj9hv-f1 . Fire safety Make sure your barbecue is steady on a level surface, away from plants and trees. The Fire Service advises covering the bottom of your barbecue with coal to a depth of no more than 5cm (2in). Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuel, and then only on cold coals. Never use petrol on a barbecue. See more on the Fire Service’s barbecue safety tips at http://www.fireservice.co.uk/safety/ barbecue.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Sheffield 50+ Members’ Meeting Thursday, 6 June at 1.30 pm in The Council Chamber of Sheffield Town Hall. The speaker is John Furniss, Community Engagement Officer of South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership. All members welcome. Membership forms will be available at the meeting. Time to Talk Trees…Streets Ahead Approach to Tree Management Friday, 7 Jun from 1-4pm at J G Graves Discovery Centre Ecclesall Woods, S7 2QZ. As part of the £2 Billion Streets Ahead Programme, Amey is responsible for managing the 36,000 trees, those on roadsides and in verges. Our qualified tree experts have been working since October to carry out a full survey of these trees to identify that they are healthy and safe. We know that many of your constituents may have questions about how Amey is managing the roadside tree population particularly in areas where it is necessary to replace those which are unsafe or causing damage to pavements and road surfaces. To help answer your questions we’d like to invite you to join us at our open day where our trees management team will be able to answer any questions you may have. As well as demonstrate the management tools used to assess the health of trees, they will also demonstrate a range of skills including tree climbing – so come prepared to give it a try if you are feeling adventurous.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare the way so you don’t get held up by any legal problems unnecessarily • Even before you think about instructing your estate agent make sure that everything is in place with a solicitor right from the start. The choice of solicitor is down to you and it is important to find a solicitor who you feel comfortable with - avoid the out of town conveyancing factories where you can’t speak to the same person twice and find someone local who has been awarded the Conveyancing Quality Standard (CQS) • Make sure you know where your deeds are . If you have a mortgage they may be with your bank or building society. Or they may be with a previous solicitor.
• If you think that there may be any legal issues ask your solicitor to check the deeds to make sure there are no issues with your home that may cause a hold up when you find a buyer • Do you have all the planning consents and building regs for any work carried out in the property since you moved in • If you have new windows or have put in a new bathroom or electrical fittings do you have all the compliance certificates - new regulations were brought in a few years ago • Find your guarantees for double glazing or the roof work • Do you have landlord’s consent if you have made any alterations • If your property is leasehold who is the ground landlord and have you paid the groundrent • Make sure you are friends with the neighbours - boundary and neighbour disputes need to be declared and could put purchasers off Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors (CQS) are at 10 Kenwood Park Road Nether Edge. LOVE YOUR AQUARIUM THIS MAY HALF TERM This May half term (25th May to 2nd June), The Deep will be supporting the Love Your Zoo and Aquarium campaign alongside hundreds of BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums) venues and telling you the top 10 reasons why you should love us. Visit The Deep and see the wonderful marine life on offer at Hull’s award winning aquarium, which is home to over 6,500 fish, insects, reptiles and amphibians including spectacular sharks and rays. Alongside a stunning array of animals, you can also enjoy interactives and audio-visual presentations which together tell the dramatic story of the world’s oceans. Enjoy daily highlights including dive presentations and animal feedings, discovery corner sessions where you can get up close with some of our animals, our sea themed soft play area and the chance to touch our freezing ice walls in the Kingdom of Ice. Don’t miss your chance to take a ride in our famous glass life through the 10m tank and walk through our superb viewing tunnel. You can also learn about our vital conservation work across the globe starting first with our five year project to protect endangered manta rays in the Red Sea. Work to safeguard this species began when a team of experts visited Sudan in 2012 to tag and monitor these beautiful animals. The largest animal our team encountered had a whopping 3.6 metre wingspan and you can see a real size graphic of the ray in the attraction. Take part in family workshops where you get the chance to make your own manta ray, follow our manta trail as well as badge making and ‘colour your own aquarium’ sheets for younger children at the Explorers’ Den. And don’t forgot, you pay for one day’s entry and get 360 FOR FREE* with our Day Plus Pass. Find out more about The Deep at www. thedeep.co.uk or visit our Facebook page – just search for TheDeepHull. *Terms and conditions apply.

The red carpet is being rolled out at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium for a glamorous event held especially for ladies. The annual Ladies Day spectacular in July brings women together for an evening of dining, bubbly and bets all in aid of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. John Gilburn, managing director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium said: “Ladies Day is a fantastic event for friends, families and colleagues to enjoy this summer. It is a highly regarded event in our calendar and is now in its tenth year. ”We are in fact the only
Greyhound stadium in the country which holds an annual Ladies Day event. “It’s a great opportunity for the women of Sheffield and beyond to get their finest dresses and shoes on and treat themselves while raising money for a local worthwhile cause. Men are also welcome to come and join the festivities as well.” The event, on Tuesday July 2, will begin at 6pm with a drinks reception at the Penistone Road venue followed by a three course meal. There will also be a charity raffle, auction, a best dressed competition
and a gift bag for all ladies in the restaurant and executive boxes. John added: “We have put together some special Ladies Day offers including the £15 Prosecco Package. This includes admission, racecard, three glasses of Prosecco or house wine, bets, meal and a return admission voucher for four people.” Catherine Rhone, senior fundraiser for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “We always enjoy working with Owlerton Stadium and in the last two years Ladies Day has raised £13,400. “We’re really honoured that once again the stadium will be donating
the funds raised to the cancer charity. The money will go towards the £1.5 million we need as part of our Do Your Bit campaign that is raising money for our new Cancer Research and

‘WORKING MEN’S CLUBS’ DOCUMENTARY CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
GET WIRED VOICE OF THE FOR SOUND NIGHTINGALE MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Why would a young person want to make a documentary about WMCs? Clubs are often viewed as for older people, of little interest to youth and this is one of the problems in terms of clubs having a future. But every year several students contact Club Historians keen to know more about their past and present. Lewis Jowers, a student at the University of Cleveland (College of Art and Design) in Hartlepool, was in touch earlier in the year. Lewis, in his final year of a degree in Creative Film and Moving Image Production, was very keen RADIO NIGHTINGALE to make a documentary about by Mel Jaques clubs as part of his degree. He In just a couple of weeks wrote: ‘I am only 21 and you time Radio Nightingale will would think it’s not what a typical be celebrating 35 years of 21 year old would make a film broadcasting with a special about, but I did. It’s an area of Anniversary Broadcast. The great interest to me, going back to broadcast, which will be generations of family, the fathers launched by the Rumpole of passing the club habit onto their Rotherham, Steve Smith, is for sons.’ He was concerned, as we 35 hours to mark the 35 years. are at Club Historians, about their A variety of guests along with decline. The money documentary about the decline of raised through this sponsorship WMCs. It seems that nobody had is going towards the costs of the really documented it in the past, online broadcasting which will the way I wanted to document be launched on the anniversary it.’ He set up a small production too. Also working in a WMC you come to understand that online. they mean a great deal to people, it is a place to socialise, meet friends/ colleagues. Meet new people, a place to go on your own if you need some time alone. It will be a huge shame if WMC close down. They are part of the culture, they are a part of people’s lives.’ Well said and well done Lewis for your documentary which will soon be available on YouTube. If you wish to see this on the big screen, it will be shown (on June 10th at 6.30 at the Vue Cinema, Hartlepool.
Hope you had a great holiday weekend. Through this week on Magic we’re giving you a chance to win something special for this coming weekend. Undoubtedly one of our greatest British rock n rollers ever Cliff Richard is coming to Yorkshire, and we have sets of tickets to give away for you to see him. Yes, Cliff will play in the stunning grounds of Harewood House up near Leeds this Saturday, June 1st. It’s all part of his “Midsummer Nights - Still Reeling and a Rocking” tour where he’s headlining at some brilliant venues and being supported by the Military Wives Choir. Harewood House is an award winning listed 18th century country house which comprises 100 acres within its grounds, renowned for its gardens and even a special bird garden. It plays host to a variety of themed weekends across the year and you could be there to see it rock to the sound of one of our best known entertainment stars. Simply tune in to the Glenn Pinder Breakfast Show and listen for a different Cliff Richard hit each morning through the rest of the week, call in on the regular number, 0114 220 1548, and you could be a winner. We’ll also have lots of other prizes including that new digital radio to give out if you can name our mystery sound on Magic’s ‘Clip around the ear’ game at 7.20am. Plus of course we’ll have details of what’s going on in the world, the latest traffic and travel with me and just great songs to start the day. Tune in each morning with us – 6 to 10am See you then

SLAM DUNK NORTH LEEDS UNI 25/5/13
REVIEW
Words by KT Evans
What goes into the perfect recipe for a spot on all day festival? Cracking venue, tick. Perfect weather, tick. One hell of a line up, big tick… something which Slam Dunk 2013 embodied all of. With a colossal set of bands, acts and performers over seven stages, it’s very hard to deny that Slam Dunk is in contention for the best festival of this summer’s live events. Held at Leeds University to a massive 6,000 strong audience, this year’s event was all about drawing together the very best in acoustic, hardcore, pop punk and alternative rock on the hottest day of the year so far. Kicking the Macbeth stage truly into fine shape, The Story So Far thrust us straight into the depths of the day. Although still barely old enough to buy themselves a pint back in their native homeland, the pop punk brigade set the tone perfectly for the rollercoaster that is Slam Dunk. Main stage action coming from one of the highest tipped bands to come out of the last year of alternative rock, Mallory Knox’s performance keeps on growing with every show they perform. Although deserved of being much higher up on the festival bill, tracks ‘Death Rattle,’ ‘Hello’ and ‘Lighthouse’ all worked smoothly to emphasise the brute force displayed by the southern quintet. Seizing the reins and following on from their musical brethren, We Are The Ocean always bring together a lively show with pumped-up crowds, although a year down the line after their screams vocalist left, the group still have a way to go before reaching their originally belting live sound. American sweethearts and one of the most anticipated performers of the day, Sleeping With Sirens commanded the stage with such ease and excitement, it seemed their 45 minute long set was far too short for such catchy pop punk tunes. With lead vocalist Kellin Quinn taking on the role of puppet master in commanding the attention of each and everybody witnessing, whatever you’ve got Kellin, bottle it and sell it, you’ll make millions by next month. Jonny Craig’s performance at Slam Dunk 2013 was easily the highlight of the day and one which will no doubt go down in festival history. Having battled his own personal demons to succumb to one of the finest singer song-writers of this generation, the former Dance Gavin Dance singer performed a mix of old and new material to a totally packed out Keep A Breast Stage. A clash with headliners All Time Low meant nothing to the audience who were truly transfixed to such a mesmerising artist as Jonny Craig. Announcing his new material is to be released very shortly, we suggest you buy in a box of Kleenex as we have a suspicion it’s going to be a teary one.

BRUNO MARS MOTORPOINT ARENA 12/10/13
PREVIEW Words by KT Evans
Arguably one of the most talented singer songwriters within our modern musical generation, Bruno Mars has gone from strength to strength since showing up on the world wide scene in 2010. A culmination of jazz, funk and R & B soul, the 27 year old Hawaii born star has reached international success in over 20 different country and has rapidly become one of the most successful artists in the last ten years, selling way over 100 million singles worldwide. Kicking his career off in 2010 with the release of his debut album ‘Doo Wops and Hooligans,’ Bruno Mars may not quite have been ready for the amount of success this album brought. Drawing influences from the likes of Little Richard, Michael Jackson and Jason Mraz, the album was nominated for seven Grammy Awards and was the third biggest selling album of 2011 in the UK. Flying in straight to number one in Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany and Switzerland, singles ‘Grenade,’ ‘Just The Way You Are,’ and ‘The Lazy Song’ safeguarded he album as a certified classic among singer songwriters across the globe. On 6th December 2012, Bruno Mars released his second studio album ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ to a massive amount of critical success. The album’s lead single ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ was met by huge praise by toping the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks and charting inside the top ten in more than 20 countries across the world. The album’s second single, ‘When I Was Your Man’ also peaked at number one on t Hot 100 and experiences massive levels of success…put it this way, we challenge anybody not to draw a tear whilst listening to that track! With the album having sold over 1 million copies up to now, it really does seem the skies the limit for Bruno Mars! This tour will see Mars perform throughout the UK including dates in London, Glasgow and Manchester. Check out www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk for ticket information, opening times and artist information. Tickets are priced at £38.50 and are available online.

THE 1975 QUEENS SOCIAL
REVIEW Words by Will McCarthy
So, with a crowd of mixed ages and gender, the Queens Social Club was full and sweating. The show started off with a DJ who won the award for worlds most enthusiastic DJ, due to his regular yawning and checking of his watch. Once he finally finished the support act Darlia came on. Their music was very ‘Kaiser Chiefs’ in style and had many turning to the person next to them and saying “I like these”, however, the band’s sound did go out after technical difficulties. This didn’t exactly ruin the performance, but the threesome definitely felt a little awkward. At the end of the gig they gave out free CD’s and were more than happy to sign them and chat to fans. They were genuinely nice guys. Finally, The 1975 entered the stage! Now, if you listen to The 1975 you will know their music can be very chilled and catchy; however, performing live showed that they can turn their work into
songs that really do get the crowd going and fully involved. My personal favourites were Head Cars Bending, Chocolate, Sex and You, which ended the excellent show perfectly! Their main objective was to the play some songs off their upcoming album and I’m sure anyone there will agree the upcoming album sounds fantastic and is eagerly awaited! The only disappointment with four piece The 1975’s performance was the power in the club also went out for them, only for a short while, but unlike Darlia they were a little more confident and talked to the crowd and really showed some personality. Lead singer think Matt Healy must get that from his parents (actors Denise Welsh and Tim Healy) The band also made sure the sound man got a round of applause and I found that a nice gesture and displayed alot about the band. At the end of the hour long gig, the atmosphere was buzzing and the lads really had put on a great show and showed their appreciation to the appreciative Sheffield crowd. Overall The 1975 are a must see ‘underdog band’ that will go from headlining gigs of circa 300 to 3000 plus within the next year.

round-up by stuart renton
It’s a news overload this week, but before I thrust myself into the juicy love pudding that is this week’s update, I need to mention Britain’s Got Talent. Or, as I call it, Sh!tain’s Got Talent – which is what you’ll all be calling it from this day forward). The bafflingly popular snoozefest is the same every year: a disappointing line up of acts that defy description and push the definition of the word ‘talent’ to its limits and beyond. And there’s always the same incredibly irritating child “star” who receives outrageously exaggerated comments from the judges and whose expectations have been hyped to such ridiculous levels that hysteria is all but inevitable in the final. Or is that just me hoping? ... Anyone? Nope? Damn, it’s just me then? Child-brat, Arisxandra, don’t let me down. I’m hoping for a Hollie “Can’t I start again?” Steel meltdown of epic proportions in the live final on Saturday. What? Yes. Of course I’m an utter b*stard. Haven’t you worked that out by now? Last night’s show saw a sexually confused vicar, the obligatory awful drag act (which is baffling as no one has ever liked drag acts… have they?), the twins who should be told we already have a Rizzle Kicks, the opera singers who reference their nan more times than Catherine Tate and creepy Christopher Maloney combined, the silent magician-cum-serial killer in training, and those utterly insipid kiddie dancers. It was on the whole a poor turnout. Reviews of the opening show were less than favourable with words like “tragic” being bandied around like room keys at a Tory party conference after a few gins. It’s a sign of a poor show when the adverts are more entertaining than the actual acts (if you’re watching, it’s nice to see Sinitta has found work again judging the pizzas in the Morrisons advert – go see for yourselves when the show returns on Thursday). I see Kirk Norcross from TOWIE’s book is miraculously in The Times’ bestseller’s list and while I’ve not even picked up a book, I can’t imagine what a guy who’s barely into his twenties has to say about anything. The guy has barely lived, but I imagine it’s little more than a book of his sexual conquests over the past decade. To “promote” the book Norcross whipped his genitals on Skype, which I think makes a change from the more traditional route of doing a book signing. What I find even more incredulous is that how does a guy who can barely string a sentence together
manage to write a whole book? His ability to put pen to paper apparently involves nothing more than jotting down his phone number on the back of a fag packet. In other news, Paris Hilton is set to re-launch her music career. Dear god, the only type of rap Hilton is capable of producing has a c in front of it, and even that’s a million miles away from the other C word that comes to mind when I think of Paris Hilton. If you don’t know, her last attempt at popstar-dom was a single entitled “screwed” which was a self-referencing poke at her sex tape that did the rounds and which got absolutely no one off except as a how NOT to have any kind of sex. I can’t imagine anything worse than ropey drunken sex with a Hilton. Now sex IN a Hilton, done that plenty of times. But sorry, Paris, you’ve got no talent. The only way you wouldn’t be a complete waste of flesh would be if someone scooped out your internal organs and made a handbag out of your skin. Those boffins at Microsoft have decided to call their new gaming machine, XBOX One, which is funny because that’s exactly how many people will be buying the console. With disappointing specs and the fact that it looks like a brick which only the ‘70s could love, the XBOX One has impressed precisely nobody. Way to kill a franchise, Microsoft. Where’s Bill Gates when you need him? And speaking of legends, David Beckham retired from professional football last week and how considerate of him was it to thank his wife for her devotion and hard work over the past fifteen years… I’m pretty sure he wasn’t thanking his wife when he was porking that Rebecca Loos bird. Allegations aside, all sins have been forgotten as he joins the hall of heroes group and becomes one of the gods of football. He’ll be remembered for his prowess on the field and not on the extra-marital bedroom floor!

LE JARDIN DE YORKSHIRE WINS SILVERGILT AT CHELSEA Le Jardin de Yorkshire from Welcome to Yorkshire has won a silver-gilt at the Chelsea Flower Show. The garden celebrates the county’s hosting of the 2014 Grand Départ of the Tour de France with representations of cyclists flashing through an idyllic Yorkshire landscape. Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: ‘‘To receive Silver-Gilt at the world's greatest flower show in its 100th year is not just a proud moment for Le Jardin de Yorkshire but for all the people who have worked on it and of course all the great gardens of Yorkshire who we are promoting as part of our entry at Chelsea.’’ The news comes on the day Welcome to Yorkshire welcomes Christian Prudhomme, director of Le Tour, and 5 time Tour winner Bernard Hinault to Chelsea Flower Show to see the Tour de France inspired garden as part of a two day visit to the UK. Designed by Bedale-based Alistair W Baldwin associates, the garden also incorporates iconic images of the Yorkshire landscape that spectators will see during the 2014 Grand Départ. These include a flock of wire sheep by Whitby sculptor Emma Stothard, a drinking trough engraved with the names of towns along the route, a wildflower meadow made from recycled rubbish and the country’s rarest Orchid only found wild in Yorkshire. Emma Stothard said: ‘‘I’m delighted to have been involved in creating this awardwinning garden for Yorkshire. The Grand Départ will be a worldwide invitation for people to come and see this county, and I’m proud that my Swaledale Sheep and our Yorkshire gardens are part of the great image that will showcase what we have to offer.’’ Alistair Baldwin, Director of AWB Associates, said: ‘It’s fantastic that Le Jardin managed to capture the imagination of the judges, and it seems to have made an impression on the public as well. Our intention in creating this garden was to represent Yorkshire and its famous Dales as well as to capture the excitement of the 2014 Grand Départ, so hopefully people will have a glimpse into the future of cycling in the county.’’

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
Well, I’ve had a good week this time, so no more rants! (Maybe next week? Maybe I should rename this the ‘Grumpy Angler’?) I’ve been to Cudmore Fisheries in Staffordshire for a few hours, hoping to catch a pike or a catfish, but the lure of easy carp proved too much! I had my customary wander around prior to fishing and met a chap on the opposite bank who had already been fishing for a couple of hours to no avail; a bite or two which had been missed, but nothing else to report in his quest for carp. I did notice he was fishing the ‘tip, despite fish obviously showing on the surface; but why? I see this a lot, and I bet you do too; a lake can be black with carp on the top, enjoying the sun and yet anglers insist on using the exact same tactics as they did on their last visit, fishing hard on the bottom because, on that day, it worked. Grrr! Settling into my chosen peg, a handful of mixers was flung out as I set up. The carp quickly homed in on the disturbance and proceeded to mop up the freebies before I added some more to gain their confidence; this continued for a few minutes before I confirmed my methods.... A Korda surface float and a nylon hooklink were then propelled past the feeding carp and slowly eased back towards them.... Within a minute, a huge swirl behind the float registered the interest of a hungry carp as it powered off into the depths, my hook firmly embedded in its mouth! After a short battle, a fish of around 10lbs was gently released and the bait (a half pop up boilie) was recast towards the feeding fish. Again, within a minute or two, the same thing happened and a second fish lay in the folds of the net.....and then a third....and a fourth! I had caught four carp up to around 13lbs in four casts within half an hour of arrival! The other angler was quickly across to see what my ‘wonder bait’ was only to be hit by the startling realisation that he too could have banked carp if he hadn’t persisted with his favourite ‘tip approach and had adapted to the conditions he was presented with! As always at Cudmore, the feeding period was soon over and the other angler continued to sit forlornly looking at a motionless quiver tip. I too changed to the tip and was happily catching small perch and bream when a disturbance at my feet had my pulling my toes in quickly. A large pike had obviously cottoned on to my steady stream of small fish and had positioned himself in ambush not a foot away from me between the wooden piling and the bank and was completely oblivious to my presence! I took the opportunity to study him closely and enjoy the closeness of such a wonderful fish, taking a few seconds of video footage and some pictures before he finally saw me and slipped away....a perfect end to a great session!

racing form by Timelord
It’s the Oaks and Derby week from Epsom this Friday and Saturday and this is where I shall concentrate . I find this week difficult usually as the very idiosyncratic track can often see big improvements from some and huge underperformance from others. At the time of writing this there are only four races scheduled for showing on Channel 4 on Saturday but there are five scheduled for Friday’s coverage. With three races over the same distance on Friday some horses are in for more than one race so check where they run on the day. Epsom: Friday: 1.35 Princess Elizabeth Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 1m 114yds: Sir Michael Stoute’s Ultrasonic gets the vote in a competitive affair. First reserve slot goes to Ighraa followed next by Beatrice Aurore (also in the 2.45) and then Savanna La Mar and Sentaryl. 2.10 Investec Wealth & Investment Handicap, 4yo+, 1m 2f 18yds: Circumvent looks to hold a good chance to me. Next best might be Fennell Bay followed by Tres Coronas, Takeitfromalady and Lord Ofthe Shadows (the latter two are also declared for the 3.20). 2.45 Investec Diomed Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 1m 114yds: In order of preference my top five here are: Tales of Grimm; Custom Cut; Beatrice Aurore (also declared for the 1.35); Gregorian; and Sri Putra. 3.20 Investec Mile, (Handicap), 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 114yds: In this my marginal preference would be for Takeitfromalady over (in preferential order): Hi There; Maverik; Hefner; and Lord Ofthe Shadows. 4.00 Investec Oaks, Group 1, 3yo Fillies, 1m 4f 10yds: This looks wide open to me. Liber Nauticus’ win in the Musidora at York is probably the best bit of form on offer although the supplemented Banoffee looks to pose a potent threat along with the Beckett pair Secret Gesture and Talent. I was extremely disappointed by the re-appearance run of Michael Bell’s filly The Lark in the Newbury Swettenham Stud Filies’ Trial Stakes. I am sure she is better than that run indicated but until I see better from her I can’t really select her. I am therefore going to stick with the Musidora form for this race and select Liber Nauticus. However I am going to have a “saver” on The Lark as I still think that she is better than her last showing. Saturday: 1.35 Investec Out of the Ordinary Handicap, 3yo, 0-105, 1m 2f 18yds: Paul Cole’s St Paul de Vence gets the nod in a very open event. The reserves are (in order of preference): Pether’s Moon; Mundahesh; Greeley’s Love; King of the Danes; and London Citizen. 2.10 Investec Woodcote Stakes, Listed, 2yo, 6f: There are eleven that won last time out and all are unexposed at this stage in their careers. However I am plumping for one that was beaten last time out in Willaim Haggas’ Haikbidiac. That defeat came in a fast run 5f Novice stakes race at York won by Steventon Star and that winner could be above average. The extra furlong here will help as Haikbidiac was doing his best work at the finish at York and only went down by 1 length. Needless to say there are multiple dangers headed by (in my estimation): Beau Nash; Cool Bahamian; Riverboat Springs; and Thunder Strike. 2.40 Investec Coronation Cup, Group 1, 4yo+, 1m 4f 10yds: It is disappointing that there are only seven entries for this Group 1 prize. St Nicholas Abbey won the race last year and will be high on many people’s lists to do so again. However I am going for Joshua Tree to pip him after a highly promising effort in a fast run Yorkshire Cup. That was over 1m 6f and the 2 furlong drop back in trip should help as he weakened in the last two furlongs at York. First reserve is St Nicholas Abbey followed by Dunaden, Chapter Seven and Dandino. 3.15 Investec Specialist Bank “Dash”, Heritage Handicap, 3yo+, 5f: I don’t think that I have ever picked the winner of this headlong dash over the world’s fastest 5 furlongs. It is all downhill for the most part and with the draw and camber playing a big part it is a very difficult race to call. For the record only therefore my order of preference is: Long Awaited (could be aptly named for me); Humidor; Nero Emperor; Ballesteros; Ajjaadd; Titus Gent; Come On Dave. 4.00 Investec Derby, Group 1, 3yo Entire Colts and Fillies, 1m 4f 10yds: It is with some trepidation that I desert the unbeaten and estimable Dawn Approach. His Group 1 successes mark him out as an exceptional animal and one not to be overlooked
too lightly. However I am uncertain about his staying this distance and have therefore looked elsewhere. It could well be that I am mistaken about his staying ability but the nagging doubt is there and I can’t ignore it. There are other leading players in Magician, Ruler of the World, Festive Cheer, Chopin, and Battle of Marengo but most of all I do have a high regard for the talents of another unbeaten one in Andre Fabre’s Ocovango. He won a ten furlong Group 2 race at Saint Cloud last time out staying on well to hold the second, Bravodino. The race was run in a fast time on good to soft going and he looks every inch a true 12 furlong animal to me. Ocovango is therefore the selection with the reserve order being: Festive Cheer; Battle of Marengo; Magician; Dawn Approach; and Ruler of the World. Selection Summary (for reserves in the event of absences see above): Friday: 1.35 Ultrasonic 2.10 Circumvent 2.45 Tales of Grimm 3.20 Takeitfromalady 4.00 Liber Nauticus Saturday: 1.35 St Paul de Vence 2.10 Haikbidiac 2.40 Joshua Tree 3.15 Long Awaited 4.00 Ocovango. Good Luck! Last week’s results: After non runners and withdrawals the final selections and results were: Goodwood: 2.05 Mobaco – 5th @ 11/1 3.35 All non runners Haydock: 2.40 All non runners 3.15 Code of Honor – 9th @ 7/2 3.50 Reckless Abandon – 3rd @ 3/1 York: 1.50 Morache Music – 2nd @ 13/2 2.20 Mad Moose – refused to race The Curragh: Saturday: 2.45 Slade Power – 3rd @ 10/3 3.20 Van Der Neer – 8th @ 5/2 3.55 Aloof – 5th @ 7/1 Sunday: 3.20 All non runners 3.55 Big Break – 4th @ 4/1 The result was a straight nine point loss to one point level stakes, despite a couple of good showings.

Football Round Up TO THE TONY IS ON NEXT LEVEL THE MEND SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday boss Dave Jones feels the Owls have the right personnel in place to take the club’s academy to the next level. Headed up by experienced manager Dean Ramsdale, Jones is impressed by the strides the Wednesday youth set-up has taken over the past year. The Owls boss places high emphasis on the academy and youth policies at the club and believes this department at Hillsborough is moving in the right direction. He told swfc.co.uk: “It’s a big priority for me because it’s part of the club. “We felt that it was an area that we could improve on and we’ve started to do that. You get the right people in and they run it to the level you think is right for this football club and the standards of this football club. “This year, to offer five players a contract is fantastic. We’ve got some good young players coming through the development squad so we feel we’re in the right place. “Neil Thompson has joined the academy and that’s because he has great knowledge at that level. He did a fantastic job at Leeds. “We brought in Dean Ramsdale, who assessed the youth system here and what needed to happen to take it forward. “We’re now bringing in more coaches and looking to make people proud to bring their son here because it’s a good club to come to.” Moving forward, Jones expects that the academy will go from strength to strength in the coming years. He continued: “I’ve been around on a Sunday morning and watched the Under-8s, 9s and 10s, and it’s fantastic. “The parents are here and it’s great to see their passion. It’s something that’s important to the club because, in this country certainly, it’s expensive business to go out and buy players, so it’s good business to develop them yourself. “For the fans themselves, there is no better feeling than seeing someone come through their academy. “The people running the academy should take great credit. The demands that have been placed on them have been far higher than what they have ever experienced. “That’s how it should be.”

SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Tony McMahon doesn’t require surgery on his troublesome Achilles problem, but has conceded he will be sidelined for much of pre-season. The right-back, who missed the Blades play-off campaign with the niggling complaint, recently visited a specialist to decide the next course of action but was told the problem didn’t need further treatment. Commenting on the injury that has plagued him for much of 2013, McMahon said: “I went to London to see the specialist again last Wednesday and the good news is I don’t need further injections or to wear a protective boot. “The plan now and throughout the summer is to do plenty of strengthening work, but it isn’t going to be a quick fix, it will still be the back end of pre-season when I am fully fit. “I played with the initial problem for two or three months, because of my character I just keep going until I can’t go any further and that was the case at Portsmouth. “It didn’t settle down in time for the play-offs which was a massive disappointment personally, but now I have to get things sorted in the summer months. “I was at both play-off fixtures and it was a real bitter pill to swallow, we should have been capable of reaching the final at the very least but that is history now and we must react positively.”
DESIGN A SHIRT SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Given the sheer size of the Owls’ fan base, the law of averages suggests there must be some budding fashion designers out there! With that in mind, the club are now giving supporters the chance to design an adult tee shirt and win a brand new Wednesday home shirt – which will be launched this summer - as first prize. In addition, the winning designers will see their tee shirts on sale in the Owls Megastore and online as part of our 2013/2014 official merchandise collections. Designs should use a maximum of three colours and be suitable for reproduction on a royal, navy or white tee shirt. You can feature the Owls’ crest, club name, nickname, favourite saying or chant, or anything that you associate with your favourite team! As a general guide, the best-selling lines in the Megastore, which last season posted record sales, are usually relatively simple in design whilst appealing to as many adult fans as possible. Our manufacturers will reproduce the winning designs and the tee shirts will go on sale in the Megastore and online at shop.sheffieldwednesday. co.uk You can email your design to megastore@swfc. co.uk, post directly to the Megastore, or drop in and leave with a member of staff. Please ensure you leave your contact details with your design. Closing date for entrants is 31 May and the results will be posted online.

SIGNING CUP FINAL A SUCCESS AT THE NUMBER THREE KEEPER COLLINS KEEPMOAT DRFC NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk
LANDS AT NYS
Arsenal L.F.C met Bristol Academy W.F.C in the FA Women’s Cup Final at the Keepmoat Stadium. It was the first time the home of Doncaster Rovers has hosted the final and nearly 5,000 fans turned out to see the women’s top domestic cup final. As well as supporters from both sides heading up north for the event, there were plenty of local families with young children and school groups; who really added a community sense to the occasion. The atmosphere had a cup final feel to it, as the youngsters used the opportunity of the free clappers to keep the noise constant. The weather was perfect for the cup final day, as fans basked in the sunshine. However, at times it was evident the heat was taking its toll on the players. As for the match, it was dominated from start to finish by Arsenal with Captain, Steph Houghton, putting her side one-nil up, within the first ten minutes. Centre forward, Ellen White, was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions in the first half as the North London outfit entered the break just one goal up, despite creating the majority of the chances. Jordan Nobbs did eventually double Arsenal’s lead when she headed home from the cross of Gemma Davison. Whilst struggling to match Arsenal, Bristol did have a few moments in which they looked to threaten them, but struggled to break down their opponents. The best moment for Bristol came when Natalia Pablos-Sanchon spectacularly overhead kicked from 10 yards, but it went just over the bar, at 2-0 down. The afternoon got worse for Bristol when Lucy Staniforth suffered what looked to be a terrible leg injury and was stretchered off. White eventually got the goal her performance deserved when Arsenal hit Bristol on the break in the last few minutes of stoppage time, to make it three-nil. It was a score line that justified the dominance of Shelley Kerr’s side, who lifted the trophy for a record twelfth time for a spectacular end to a great day at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Rotherham United have completed the third close season signing after capturing goalkeeper Adam Collin. Collin, 28 played over 130 games in League One for Carlisle United between 2009 and 2013 and despite contract offers from two southern clubs in League One and SPL side, the former Newcastle United man signed for the Millers shortly after pen had been put to paper on a deal to bring in defender Richard Brindley. Like Brindley, Collin has had a spell at semiprofessional level having played over 200 games for Workington earlier in his career, but manager Steve Evans sees this capture as a real coup whilst at the same time ensuring a fight for the first choice between the sticks. As well as a wealth of League One experience, he featured in two successive cup finals at Wembley, saving a decisive penalty in the semi-final in 2010, and coming out on the winning side in 2011. “There was a bit of interest from League One and the SPL but I’ve chosen to come here because it’s a club on the up with a great setup at the training ground and the stadium. The location and the fanbase are excellent,” Adam exclusively told Millers Player. Collin becomes the third signing of the summer, after full-backs Joe Skarz and Richard Brindley put pento-paper and the Millers boss expects him to have a tough season competing for the number one jersey. “A lot of the success they (Carlisle) had in recent years was down to the big man’s form. We identified him in February as a potential target, and there was interest from two established League One clubs. He’s six feet four, kicks it well, he’s strong and has a big presence and has a real pedigree of course being from Newcastle United.”
GEORGE KEEN FOR LONG SUMMER SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
George Long insists international recognition has personally capped a fine season, but he doesn’t want it to end just yet. The Sheffield born goalkeeper, who provided a reliable last line of defence for the Blades last term, was named in England’s U20s provisional 35-man squad for the World Cup, which takes place in Turkey this summer. That 35 will be whittled down to 21 in early June and Long is determined to prove himself to England’s coaching staff and make the cut for the finals. He commented: “Having already experienced the England setup should definitely help me,

because I know what to expect. “I have also worked with the goalkeeping coach before, so in the next few weeks I am looking forward to working hard and hopefully doing enough to get a seat on the plane to Turkey. “It is crucial to have a good working relationship with the goalkeeping coach because during the week you spend an awful lot of team with working them. “I am encouraged that the scouts have been monitoring my progress this season and I have performed consistently since getting in the team. “I don’t really think about anything apart from the game, but afterwards you often get told about the scouts that have been watching. “To play in a World Cup against some of the best young players in the world would be an unbelievable experience. Long added: “I never expected to make over 40 appearances this season, but after getting thrown into the action in October I haven’t really looked back. “Everyone is gutted we didn’t win promotion, but personally it was a good season for me and one I won’t forget. “Hopefully I can cap it by playing for my country in a World Cup.”
