For lovers of Sixties music, this is the ultimate, and probably never to be repeated, line-up. Don’t miss your chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of when it all began. Featuring record breaking Merseybeat band Gerry & The Pacemakers. The second Liverpool band to chart (after The Beatles), but the first to reach No. 1 and the first act ever to top the charts with their first three singles. Also from Liverpool and tipped to be as big as The Beatles, The Searchers’ first single also went to No. 1 and led to five more Top 5 hits and a total of 128 weeks in the charts. Controversial, ponytailed P.J. Proby, whose trouser splitting shocked the nation, was a Melody Maker teen idol award winner in 1964 and spent 91 weeks in the charts.
The Fortunes stormed the Top 10 with You’ve Got Your Troubles, Here It Comes Again, Freedom Come Freedom Go and Storm in a Teacup. And finally, Brian Poole and Chip Hawkes. On stage together.
AMAZING ARTISTS UNITE FOR ‘SIXTIES GOLD, THE 50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR’
Gerry & the Pacemakers (Main Pic) will be appearing on the tour alongside The Searchers (Inset), P.J. Proby, The Fortunes, Brian Poole & Chip Hawkes

Copley’s Column I previously reported favourably after seeing a one man show by Cary Baylis, and I was happy to learn that he was performing part two on Wednesday night at Maggie May’s. I attended with the lovely Diana Edwards and my good pal John Keeley and I am pleased to report that the show was excellent, just like the first one. Cary related some really funny stories about occurrences in his long career which had the audience in stitches. It looked at one point that the attendance was going to be poor, causing Cary to say that he would have been better holding the event at his home and even suggested to me that he was prepared to refund everybody’s entrance money. However, he received a phone call from some of his loyal supporters that they were on the way and by the time they had arrived, quite a few more people had arrived and the Lennon Lounge was nearly full. It was nice to see Cary’s fellow Acoustic Angel, Julian Jones in the audience, and a very humorous guy, Irishman Patrick Kenny sat with us and was a joy to be with. I resisted the temptation to join him in a drink in the interval in the Grapes pub. Cary Baylis is a legend with a lengthy musical career, plying his trade as a magnificent maestro on the guitar, and he has written some excellent music with Gary Barlow which have been recorded by Take That. He has also written for Danni Minogue and Lulu. He is of the highest pedigree, yet is refreshingly unassuming. On the night we were treated to some fabulous vocals from Diana Edwards and the wonderful Lindsay Dracass, both great singers and a joy to listen to. Lindsay is held in high regard by Cary, so much so that he was considering retiring from the music business until he started working with Lindsay. On Saturday night we went to the Forest Showbar for an evening with Adrian Paris. I am pleased to report that Adrian’s performance was superb. He
has an amazing singing voice with great range exemplified when he went from singing Nessun Dorma to a falsetto Stylistic number and then a bit of Barry White. My two all-time favourite songs are In Dreams, a Roy Orbison classic and Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Credence Clearwater Revival, so I was delighted when Adrian sang them both with no prompting from me. Adrian is similar to Ken Dodd in the respect that he gives great value for money with the time he spends performing. His first set lasted an hour and a quarter and he came back on after a fifteen minute break and gave his appreciative audience another hour. I was saddened to learn of the death of Top Olympian Donna Hartley, wife of local comedian Bobby Knutt, at the young age of fifty eight. Bobby and Donna attended celebrity breakfast three weeks ago and I thought when we were chatting how fit and young for her age she looked. I remarked how nice it was that they were still holding hands after all the time together and Bobby explained that they were very much in love. I can’t imagine the devastation that Bobby must be feeling and my sincere condolences are extended to him.

The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1 Local fundraisers from Sheffield are on a mission to help reduce landfill waste by participating in The Biscuit Wrapper Roundup, a nationwide six month collection contest from the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade, a recycling fundraising scheme which aims to save as many used biscuit wrappers from local landfill as possible. The top twenty collectors nationwide will win a combined £1,000 worth of charity donations, so fundraisers from South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) are asking the people of Sheffield to help them with their collections and attempts to be crowned the Biscuit Wrapper Roundup champions. Whilst biscuit wrappers are recyclable, very little mixed plastic recycling is carried out by local council kerb side collections, as they simply do not have the infrastructure. This results in billions of biscuit wrappers needlessly being sent to UK landfill. This prompted McVitie’s and recycling experts TerraCycle to join together in June 2012 to launch an innovative solution for UK consumers in the form of the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade. The scheme encourages consumers across the UK to help end this enormous waste of resources, by using freepost labels to send in any brand of used biscuit wrappers to be recycled into everyday products such as watering cans, garden benches and waste bins. Every active McVitie’s® Biscuit Wrapper Brigade® location such as South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) is automatically entered into the contest. At the end of the contest, the twenty top collectors will win contributions of £250, £150, £50, or £20 to their chosen school, charity or non-profit organisation. In addition the Grand Prize winning location and First Runner Up will also receive a hamper full of McVitie’s biscuits. As well as working towards becoming the Biscuit Wrapper Roundup winners South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) earns two TerraCycle points for the weight of each biscuit wrapper of any brand they send in for recycling. Each point can be redeemed for a 1 pence contribution for South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR). Heather Pointer, one of the trustees at South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) commented: “We joined the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade in September 2012 and have so far saved 523 used biscuit wrappers from landfill. We also collect on the BIC Writing Instruments Brigade where we collect any brand of used pen and the Kenco Eco Refill Brigade where we collect used Kenco coffee eco refill packs. In total we have saved 8,696 pieces of waste from landfill on TerraCycle’s recycling fundraising schemes raising £320.52 for South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue which will be used to care for unwanted or neglected Spaniels and help find them loving new homes. “Whilst we have a good network of friends and family who save their used biscuit wrappers for us, the wider community of Sheffield can really help us increase our chances of being a Biscuit Wrapper Roundup winner. Plus together we can save considerably more used biscuit wrappers from landfill which is good for the local environment. Simply drop your used biscuit wrappers of any brand and the other types of waste we collect back to the South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue’s collection box at their new charity shop, ResQued, at 9 High Street, Swallownest, Sheffield, S26 4TT and we will send them in as part of our collections.”

needs to be tempered with wisdom before its true worth is known. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Runes (Part 1) The History of Runes Runes are used in magic and healing work. The origin of runes is uncertain, although runic inscriptions have been dated from 3AD onwards. The runes were a writing system used throughout the Germanic tribes of Northern Europe. In the past there were two types of people who worked with runes: Rune Cutters who had limited knowledge of the runes and the Rune Masters who had undertaken many exploratory experiences to discover the secrets of Rune Lore. Elder Futhark is the widely used runic alphabet. The letters of the Elder Fulhark are divided into three groups of eight letters called Aetts. Runes can be made of stone, plastic, crystal or even pebble from the beach. Consulting the Runes Divination works in the following way. If you have a problem or an issue that needs resolving or you simply need guidance, you can focus on the runes and they will provide an answer.
Geof Rune - Elm tree - offers you a spiritual pathway. You must be both a giver and a receiver. Wynn Rune - Ash tree - means happiness and to be happy you must be at peace with yourself. AN INTERGENERATIONAL APPROACH IS ONLY WAY TO PREPARE FOR AN AGEING POPULATION http://www.jrf.org.uk/blog/2013/05/ intergenerational-approach-prepare-ageingpopulation
When most people think ‘ageing’ they think older people. But in order to explore the implications of an ageing society a cross-generational approach is much more helpful, says Claire Turner. The public and policy debate about readiness for ageing currently focuses on the young and old, but this is at best distracting and at worst divisive. We need to focus on the implications across generations to have an honest, evidencebased dialogue about ageing and fairness, and need to include all generations in that. Last week I sat on the panel of a debate on public services and demographic change. The debate came on the back of the House of Lords Select Committee Ready for Ageing report. The questions were wide ranging but time and time again the discussion came back to intergenerational issues, in particular intergenerational fairness between young and old. This evening marks the first event of the Guardian Ageing Population Partnership, which will bring together different professionals to answer the question: how can we best respond to the opportunities and challenges of an ageing population? I’m sure the same intergenerational issues will be writ large there too. This is an important facet of the understanding how we – individuals, communities and the state - prepare for an ageing society. However, I’m not sure how helpful this particular type of ‘intergenerational’ focus is to the debate. At its most basic level, if we define intergenerational as young and old we miss out a large part of the working age population when the opportunities and challenges of living longer affect us all. Also, simply focusing on two generations - young and old - has the potential to pitch one generation against another. The young and old dynamic can make generational issues feel niche (conjuring up images of primary school aged children visiting care homes) when the reality is that the issue of fairness across and connections between generations and over time should be at the core of public policy. I would argue that a cross-generational approach to ageing would be a much more helpful way to think about the consequences of living longer. While the intergenerational debate has tended to highlight the conflicts between young and old, everyday lives do not necessarily reflect this. Different generations live together, sharing neighbourhoods and workplaces, and this will become more common as people live and work for longer. ONS (Office for National Statistics) projections estimate that babies born in 2011 can expect to live for nearly 100 years (average 94 years for males and 97 years for females). We are already at a time where we see fivegeneration families and this is surely set to continue given increased life expectancies. These real and personal connections could help shift the debate on ageing to a place which is meaningful to all of us.

The Anchor Community Band has been created by Anchor – England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for the over 55s – to record a music single celebrating the lives of older people. The band is made up of around 350 residents and staff members from Anchor’s care homes and retirement housing. Contact the Elderly will benefit from the proceeds of all sales generated. The single See Yourself is based on a lifetime of experiences of people throughout the country, with the lyrics promoting an understanding about ageing across the generations. A questionnaire was sent out to many of our older guests and people living in Anchor homes, to seek their input for the lyrics and the band has been busy recording the song over the past couple of months.

Keith Arscott, Director at Contact the Elderly, said: “Over the past four months, Anchor has been working tremendously hard and collaborating with Contact the Elderly to get this innovative project off the
ground. The money raised will be invaluable in helping us to extend our vital lifeline of friendship to more isolated older people. We are extremely grateful to Anchor.” Contact the Elderly staff and volunteers have attended events at various Anchor care homes and retirement housing to celebrate the launch of the single. Cornwall Development Officer, Janey Comber, was invited to an event in Plymouth, and said: “I was made to feel very welcome and was asked to make a speech. I also cut a fabulous cake and we all enjoyed scones with jam and cream, and Champagne. The staff enjoyed the singing so much that they have organised a choir to perform concerts for the residents!” If 10,000 copies are purchased before the 8th June, See Yourself could make the top 40. This will not only help increase awareness about Contact the Elderly’s work, but will also help provide a lifeline of friendship to even more isolated older people. You can order the CD from Amazon and the digital version from iTunes. The song was released officially on the 3rd June, and a digital version will also be available from Amazon.

READER’S QUESTIONS I am worried that my son - who is long term unemployed - will lose his benefits when I die and leave him part of my estate. Can I get around this? You can set up a discretionary trust over your estate when you die. This will provide flexibility for your executors and trustees to pay out to your children at the best possible time for them, and in the meantime it can be invested and held for them and they can receive income if appropriate. My father is blind and wishes to make a will. Can he still do this? Yes he can, but it is necessary to follow a specific procedure when it is executed (signed) to ensure
I am thinking of selling my house. What should I look for when choosing a good conveyancing solicitor? Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors was the first firm to be CQS accredited in Sheffield and this should give you assurance that the people who are dealing with the legal matters in your sale can provide you with a top-level service. LOCAL BUSINESS URGES CHARITY SUPPORT FOR NATIONAL RECYCLE WEEK Regus in Sheffield becomes a collection point for unwanted business computers, laptops and mobile phones next in National Recycle Week from 17 – 21 June. The initiative is in partnership with Computers for Charities (CfC), a national charity that recycles IT equipment in aid of charitable, voluntary and educational organisations across the UK and in many developing countries. Local businesses are invited to drop off their unwanted computers and mobile phones for recycling at Regus Sheffield (2nd Floor, The Portergate, Ecclesall Road S11 8NX) between 17 – 21 June. A Certificate of Data Destruction for equipment with hard drives will be provided and recycling is carried out in line with environmental and data protection regulations. A small donation towards this service would be welcomed by the charity, although not obligatory. Steve Purdy, Managing Director at Regus, comments: “We are encouraging smaller businesses which have recently upgraded their IT equipment to bring along redundant computers, laptops and mobile phones to our centres so that, through Computers for

NAME THE VOICE OF THE PLACE TO WIN NIGHTINGALE THE RACE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Name the place to win the race! As we get set for the summer we have even more chances to win. There are holidays to give away and we’ve got the return of another one of our most popular games as we give out yet another digital radio. At 8.00 every weekday morning it’s the Place Race. Simply listen for the daily clues and then keep listening for your cue to call in and guess where it is. This will follow at various times throughout the day. If you’re invited to play and you get it right the radio is yours, but if the guess is wrong the game simply rolls on. Quite simply the longer you listen to Magic each day the more you’ll learn about the place through the clues and the various answers being given, so the more chance you will have of working out the mystery of where it is before everybody else! Glenn Pinder will start the game off on the Breakfast Show Our own Tony Blackburn is also giving you a chance to get away from it all and win a holiday. We have cruises to give away from P&O Mini Cruises at the end of the month. Simply hop on to our website at magicam.co.uk and enter to win. Don’t forget to join Tony to find out more as well each Sunday teatime from 4.00 to 7.00pm for more great songs from his personal collection. Plus, I’m here of course starting off the weekends every Saturday morning from 6.00 to 10.00am.

Thirty-five hours of broadcasting to celebrate 35 years of Radio Nightingale, the radio service for the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. The event started at 9.30am on Sunday 2 June with special guest Steve Smith who also officially launched the online broadcasting. Guests continued throughout the two day bonanza with Rev Canon David Bliss, the vicar of Rotherham; Mel Howard; Rev Joan Ashton, the Hospital Chaplain; and Col Mac McPherson. John Healey MP also managed to squeeze 10 minutes between votes at the Commons to round off the broadcast on Monday evening. Previous volunteers of Adam Walker and Rob Staton, now of BBC Radio Sheffield joined the broadcasts too and original team member David Hoffman presented a three hour programme, joined by special guest Rick Wakeman. The special broadcast was not only to mark the 35 years since Radio Nightingale started but also to raise money for the online streaming. This additional way of listening to Radio Nightingale being made available as the number and length of hospital admissions decreases. The fundraising target was met by the end of the first day with almost 180 sponsored requests played in the 35 hours.
IT’S THE ICE CREAM VAN CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
I’m sure I’m far from alone remembering the excitement brought on as a child when hearing the chimes of the ice cream van. If mum had the money, we would run round the corner to buy an ice cream or lolly. Sometimes the van, usually Di Di Mascios where I lived, may have moved on already and we would go tearing off down the street in a panic that we would miss him! So, I got quite excited when Rebecca Davis got in touch with Club Historians to tell us about her Beau Belles Ice Cream Van project. This shares many of our own aims of collecting memories and experiences from communities around the country of shared traditions. Many of these may not take place any longer due to social change and the break up of communities particularly in urban areas. But they can be kept alive by inviting people to share them, them, record them and then pass on to other generations. This is what we do at Club Historians so we support Rebecca’s similar work. She has bought this lovely old ice cream van (sadly she can’t actually sell ice creams!) and invites people to visit to tell their stories, no matter how old they are or where they are from. From very young to very old, from these isles or elsewhere, what were, and perhaps still are, the important rituals that bring communities together? Rebeccas tells us: ‘Beau Belles Ice Cream Van celebrates the cultural rituals and traditions occurring historically and at present in the UK.’ Many of those rituals and cultural experiences used to take place inside local clubs such as Easter bonnet parades and communal singing. Rebecca is interested in collecting as much as possible not only for posterity but in order to pass these on. ‘Beau Belles Ice Cream Van will breathe new life into traditions and whip them up for all to share.’ She is interested in clubs as part of her wider project. In late July, there are events planned around the van at the Olympic Park in London including playing mass bingo! Rebecca will be taking her van around the country in the summer and planning to park outside some clubs so that people can drop in and tell their stories. Do look out to see when the van might be coming your way and go along to talk to Rebecca. theicecreamvan.tumblr.com beaubellesicecreamvan@gmail. com twitter:@TheIceCreamVan

LEEDS FESTIVAL BRAMHAM PARK 23-25/08/13
PREVIEW Words by KT Evans
We truly are now in the very depths of festival season, with some of the most anticipated events drawing closer and closer into our summer. However, with the line-up of the entire circuit so near to home we can nearly touch it, Leeds Festival 2013 is all about bringing the party to the North…and having announced a whole new wave of artists on all of the seven stages, this year promises to be bolder than any years yet. So we all know the main stage line-up for 23rd August right? Biffy, Nine Inch Nails, Fall Out Boy, The Editors…however also performing the main stage includes Brit Rock band Don Broco, US pop punk pack We Are the In Crowd and hardcorians Bury Tomorrow. Having beefed up their fan base to an almighty high, Don Broco are fast becoming the UK’s most anticipated new acts. With millions of views on their youtube channel, the Bedford pack might do the most annoying dance routine known to man (‘The Walk’) but they sure know how to put on a live show. Gallows, Funeral For a Friend and Arcane Roots have also all been added onto the Lock Up Stage, this year running the entire length of Leeds Festival! Saturday 24th August is a full on salute to Sheffield, with two local bands performing on the main Leeds Fest stage. Having been awarded the challenge of opening the second day, While She Sleeps are both bold and passionate enough to live up to such high acclaim. Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon no doubt know how to heighten up the crowds, alongside recently announced The Pretty Reckless and Skindred. An eclectic mixture of drum n bass, dubstep and hardcore, Skindred may be the most bizarre act you see the entire weekend, although we can pretty much guarantee you’re going to love them. Fact. Kate Nash and Temples will join Crystal Fighters on the Festival Republic stage to succumb to yet another belter of a line-up. The final festival day is a massive day for one of the UK’s most tipped bands of this year. Having performed on main stages throughout festivals all over the world, Mallory Knox may not be strangers of the international platforms of rock, although an event in the vein of Leeds Festival might just blow all other experiences out of the water. Twin Atlantic and The Blackout are also main stage performers, alongside headliners Chase and Status and the most successful selling rapper of all time, Eminem. Sheffield’s Drenge have been announced for the Festival Republic stage however our full attention will be on the Lock Up Stage for Sick Of It All. US Hardcore with enough brute force to blow away each and everyone who witnesses, we challenge you to watch a full set and not need a sit down afterwards… you’ll know what we mean. Check out www.leedsfestival.com for ticket info and line up.
round-up by stuart renton
I’m exhausted this week after being pounded for two hours by distinctly average “talent” on Saturday’s Sh!tain’s Got Talent. But before I discuss my abject apathy for the show that brings a whole new meaning to the word low brow (they might as well be referring to the chin), I have to express my absolute delight that BBC moved The Voice from its Saturday night slot to the Friday evening slot. AKA the slot of death*. I’ve said on many occasions how much I loathe this creep show that pretends to be a talent competition, but the only way this show could be more freakish is if they got Anne Robinson to host it. The mere fact they sneakily shifted the slot at the last minute spoke entire volumes that no one is actually watching it anyway. Which, apparently only comes as a surprise to the producers and those for nutters trying to pass themselves off as mentors. Back to BGT and the only highlight of the show was egg thrower, Natalie Holt. The militant violinist was so outraged by Simon Cowell’s Twitter comment that he didn’t like eggs, she decided to come on stage and pelt him with them. Way to make a statement, Nat! Next time may I suggest shuriken, acid coated blades, or even holy water (that’ll work against the Lord of Darkness himself), but eggs just don’t make the kind of statement that I like. Hell, a flame-thrower would have been great, but I have the feeling Cowell’s had so much surgery he’s probably immune to anything weaker than an Exocet missile. Cowell later moaned that he’d got stains on his jacket, but I’d wager it’s not the first time someone’s tossed themselves over him in a darkened studio. A lot of people felt sorry for ropey “classical” singers, Richard and Adam, saying that their act was ruined by Holt’s egg-lobbing antics, but I disagree. The nan-enhanced duo managed to ruin their act entirely on their own by inventing a whole new kind of cheese live on stage; an impressive act by anyone’s standards. But I do think Holt was on to something and I firmly believe a lot of people would love to see live tossing on stage. Although I’m not entirely sure the Queen would be up for that at the Royal Variety Performance (I hear she’s more into dogging**). But ignoring the Hungarian winners who performed a truly sickening display that was so far up the backsides of the British public it was almost beyond reason, the true star act of the night was Steve Hewlett who’s Arthur Larger act really did embody the essence of variety (as opposed to the club singers, rubbish dancers and children singing tragic songs twenty years too old for them).
2013
Download Festival…back and bigger than Jesus. Promising to be the highlight of 2013’s festival calendar, Donnington Park is once again set to transform into rock mecca for the three day event fans are calling ‘heaven.’ Wow. With over 80,000 people having bought a tent and ticket, we thought it was about time we put forward our “Download dos and don’ts” because we’ve got a sneaking suspicion you’re going to find it a challenge to shift through 100 plus acts throughout the weekend…aren’t we kind! Although Download’s live music doesn’t kick off until Friday 14th June, we strongly suggest you go down prior to the day in order to pitch your tent… please tell us you haven’t got a single skin right? This way, you won’t miss any of the action from the massively anticipated first day. Headlining Friday and opening what it to be one hell of a headliners event, Slipknot are all about putting on a kick ass live show. However, don’t be blinded by the Slipknot showcasing as there are tonnes of bands waiting to be explored. Palm Reader on the Pepsi Maxx stage never fail to give each and every performance an additional boot, not to mention Motionless In White who are quite literally the creepiest looking set of dudes since Paul Potts…and that’s saying something. World famous legends Motorhead and Iron Maiden are all lined up for Saturday 15th June, but we recommend you check out the Zippo Encore Stage for a day of absolute belters. Drum and Bass / hardcore heros Enter Shikari are taking the reins alongside Escape the Fate and Jimmy Eat World. Having very recently released their brand new studio album ‘Damage,’ Jimmy Eat World are every bit as passionate about their recorded music as they are putting on ridiculously memorable live shows. Another highlight we strongly suggest you check out is Heart Of a Coward on Pepsi Maxx. Deserved of a massive turn out for their show, HOAC have toured the length and breadth of the UK in order to build a fan base up which undeniably rivals even that of internationally renowned stars…don’t believe us? Go check them out on Saturday afternoon then! And to Sunday, easily the best day of the entire event and one with a line up we can only describe in one word…amazing. Headlining the Zippo Encore Stage, a band who have reached the stars with their take on rap metal…Limp Bizkit. Love them or hate their US guts, Fred Durst and co are a pack of wolves you certainly don’t want to miss. Sheffield’s Black Dogs are set for the Red Bull Studios Stage having toured the UK on various support slots this year. Another major highlight is awarded to The Gaslight Anthem, drawing to a close the weekends event and bringing with them a show to conclude 3 days in the life of a rocker…bring it on!
Live Previews_Reviews_News Opinion - Single/Album Reviews_Listings
For me, the perfect show would have been one that did away with the kiddie acts entirely (preferably before a firing squad) and just had variety acts. We’re talking original interesting acts – desperate impressionists – sad transvestites and anyone who is doing it for their nan… Oh hang on, that was the show!!! Hmm. Maybe a rethink is needed. In other non-news, delusional Sharon Osborne is back in the first rounds of the X Factor and it’s said she’s dominating the camera (which is a change from dominating the bedroom, which usually requires an awfully large amount of rope and a bottle of Rohypnol). The wannabe young plastic princess is said to have put out Nicole Sherzinger with her antics, which is not the first time the words “put out” and “Nicole Sherzinger” have appeared in the same sentence, I can tell you (Google it). Poor Shazza: we haven’t seen anyone this delusional since the first guy made the statement: it’s not how big it is it’s what you do with it! And lastly this week, there was an EDL rally in Sheffield at the weekend and I took advantage of all the mindless muscle ready for action to hire a hit man to remove a very annoying person I know. Someone told me all I had to do was to hang around behind the Town Hall after midnight to hire the right kind of meat for the job. Sheesh did I get that one wrong... Turned out they weren’t the EDL at all, and worse, my enemy’s still around, only he now has a smile on his face... I did think fifty quid to whack someone off was really cheap at the time. Turns out that expression has two meanings these days… More next week with the new Big Brother: Secrets and Lies and a review of the latest uber tosh on your tellyboxes! *Also known as Jordan’s Lady Garden. ** A person who likes dogs! Really it’s not at all filthy!

The first ever Arts & Cultural Festival to accompany the start of the Tour de France moved a step closer last week after Arts Council England awarded funding of £1million towards the project. Starting at the end of March next year, the Arts & Cultural Festival will showcase Yorkshire as a creative county in the 100 days before the start of the Tour de France 2014. It will include keynote commissions to animate the Grand Départ and the route of the Tour de France through Yorkshire. The initiative, the first of its kind in the 110 year history of the Tour de France, hopes to secure a further £1m of match funding to help deliver the project. Cluny Macpherson, Regional Director, Arts Council England said: “I’m delighted that we are able to help fund the Arts and Cultural Festival that will celebrate the Tour de France’s visit to Yorkshire. It will showcase all that is great about Yorkshire arts and culture as well as providing an opportunity for specially commissioned work. Building excitement across the region in the run up to the Tour de France, I can’t think of a better way to mark the historic occasion of the Grand Départ taking place in Yorkshire.’ Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We are delighted to have secured funding to deliver an ambitious programme of events to celebrate the arrival of the Tour de France in Yorkshire It will be a fantastic opportunity for the whole county to share in the excitement and interest that will be building in the run-up to the 2014 Tour de France, helping to put Yorkshire on the map for millions of people months before the riders arrive.” The search is now underway for a Festival Director to run the ambitious and ground-breaking 100 day long festival. David Lascelles, The Earl of Harewood, a BAFTA award winning television and film producer, will chair the steering group who in conjunction with the Festival Director will determine the programme. Robin Tuddenham, director of communities for Calderdale council, will be the local authority lead for the project. Plans will now commence to draw up and deliver one of the biggest ever cultural festivals in Yorkshire.

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
A proper rant this week......sorry. Anglers are fickle......fickle to the point in some cases of being downright ignorant or even fall into the realm of becoming abusive. This week has seen me post quite a lot of content on a number of websites and social media sites regarding things including new product releases and catch reports, only to gain some responses which border on the ridiculous! I get many catch reports sent through to me for a variety of magazines and others, unfortunately, some contain just a tiny picture and a one line explanation along the lines of “...put this in your magazine for me mate” without giving me any clues. Who are you? How big is that fine fish? Where did you catch it from?? What is your name? Any clues about bait or tactics? No? Well, sadly I’m not psychic and do not automatically recognise your venue....therefore, the chances are that your report, your fish of a lifetime may not be featured; therefore my fault.... That means you have free reign to complain to my editor, or directly to me, or to anyone else who will listen that your stunning photograph (yes, that one taken on a dodgy phone!) hasn’t been used and because of it, ergo, I am guilty or ignoring ‘news’ and failing to recognise your brilliance.....pah! I need to name the venue so our readers can share the fun; a quick email with “...can’t name it mate, publicity ban” sort of rules you out straight away doesn’t it? A catch report needs to be just that; if any angler sends a report to any editor or otherwise, think about what that person has to write to make a story or snippet from it......then if you want to, it may make print... Online is even worse. A genuine question, a cause for sensible debate, an offer or a request for advice, any one will bring the expected (and it is expected that at least one will occur) moronic reply which is nothing whatsoever to do with the original post but is merely an angler trying to prove his genius. Invariably, the poster of such comments conforms to type; usually between 14-25 years old, desperate to be sponsored or even paid to go fishing but has no real idea what is involved and has a photographic portfolio of badly held stunted fish from a local commercial fishery. This ‘angler’ no doubt has a group of friends (perhaps online only) who are deceived by his constant ‘advice’ and his brilliantly humourous reposts (forgive the irony) are often shared amongst his circle. There is no reasoning with said anglers; I’d love to reply in a manner befitting, but much to my chagrin, I can’t; nor can I advise them of the error of their ways. They know all there is to know about angling, therefore I, and those who run sites, pages, columns and magazines must take onboard their wisdom unless wanting to appear cheap/disrespectful/ ignorant etc. You know who you are..... To every decent angler out there, reading this scribe, I bet you are as fed up as me with the inane replies of those who seek to decry everything every other angler does. None of us know it all; that is part of the beauty and attraction of angling and I know that for every idiot, there are hundreds of like minded fishermen and women keen to share what bit of knowledge we have....to all of you, I salute you and I thank you.....

There’s plenty of top class action coming up in the next ten days as Royal Ascot takes centre stage next week preceded by some decent cards on Saturday. Sandown Musselburgh and York feature on Saturday with eight races in all, two Listed races and six difficult-looking handicaps. I have also covered the top three races from each of the first two days at Royal Ascot next week. Saturday: Sandown: 1.50 Cash Out Multiples Only On Betfair Handicap, 3yo, 0-90, 1m 1f: Brian Meehan’s Freeport is the suggestion here to provide a winner for Frankie Dettori. With quite a few of those that ran particularly well last time out possibly not running the reserves are: Tosca; Soul Intent; Noble Gift; Kohlaan; Stableford; Emulating; and Endorsing. 2.20 Novae Insurance Handicap, 3yo+, 0-100, 1m 14yds: Again there could be plenty of non runners from the current entries. However of those with jockeys booked already there are some very interesting ones. Sea Shanty is a course and distance winner, is going well at present, and seeks a four timer here. Spa’s Dancer also won over course and distance last time out and looks to have a decent chance, albeit off 9st 11lbs. Swiftly Done, Fire Ship, Sahavansky, Gaul Wood, Roserrow, Trader Jack, George Guru and Karacka Jack all also posted good times last time out but the one that posted the best last time out speed figure for me is another of Richard Hannon’s, Tamayuz Star, who looks to hold every chance with William Twiston-Davies’ claim taking off a handy 5lbs. The reserve order is: Spa’s Dancer; Swiftly Done; Fire Ship; Sahavamsky; Gaul Wood; Roserrow; andSea Shanty. 2.55 Novae Bloodstock Insurance Scurry Stakes, Listed, 3yo, 5f 6yds: If Edward Lynam’s Boston Rocker makes the trip over from Ireland she would be a pretty confident selection. However she may not put in an appearance so the reserves are (in order of preference): Lady Ibrox; March; Smoothtalkinrascal; Rio’s Pearl; Normal Equilibrium; Dutch Masterpiece; Cosmic Chatter; and Morawij. Musselburgh: 3.35 William Hill Scottish Sprint Cup (Handicap), 4yo+, 5f: The order of preference here is: Jamaican Bolt; Racy; Hamish Mc Gonagall; Nero Emperor; Bajan Tryst; Kingsgate Choice; Confessional; Captain Dunne; and Justineo. York: 2.05 Queen Mother’s Cup (Lady Amateur Riders) (Handicap), 3yo+, 0-95, 1m4f: Tim Easterby’s Crackentorp goes particularly well here, has won this race for the last two years and come here on the back of an excellent run behind Sir John Hawkwood last time over course and distance. He gets the nod to land the hat-trick under the same rider as last time. Easy Terms and Pulpitarian look to me to present the most danger, followed by Itlaaq, Unex Michelangelo, Rio’s Rosanna, Reve de Nuit and War Singer.

Wednesday: 3.05 Duke of Cambridge Stakes: My order of preference here is: Caponata; Beauty Parlour; Elusive Kate; Intense Pink; Giofra; Thistle Bird; Ladys First; Duntle. 3.45 Prince of Wales’s Stakes: Maxios’ last time out win in the Group 1 Prix D’Ispahan marked him out as top class and he could go on to land this from: Red Cadeaux; Snow Fairy; Saint Baudolino; Hunters Light; Trade Storm; and Side Glance. 4.20 Royal Hunt Cup: Bet at your peril in this!! This is an absolute lottery of a contest where the draw can play a major part in giving or taking away your chance. A very speculative suggestion for a small each way punt is Saptapadi. I also like Al Muheer, Fire Ship, and Global Village in a very difficult event. Selection Summary (for reserves in the event of absences see above): Saturday: Sandown: 1.50 Freeport 2.20 Tamayuz Star 2.55 Boston Rocker Musselburgh: 3.35 Jamaican Bolt York: 2.05 Crackentorp 2.40 Fort Belvedere 3.15 French Navy 3.50 Moviesta Royal Ascot: Tuesday: 2.30 Beauty Parlour 3.05 Soul 3.45 Mshawish Wednesday: 3.05 Caponata 3.45 Maxios 4.25 Saptapadi (small each way bet) Good Luck! Last week’s results: The final selections were: Haydock: 2.05 Palazzo Bianco – 10th @ 11/1 2.40 Quiz Mistress – 6th @ 7/1 3.15 Eton Forever – 5th @ 3/1 3.50 Pleine Forme – 8th @ 11/1 Newmarket: 2.20 Status Symbol – 9th @ 25/1 2.55 Nocturn – won @ 3/1 3.30 No Heretic – 3rd @ 7/2
GOLF TOURS
2.40 Ladbrokes.com Stakes (Handicap), 3yo+, 0-105, 1m 208yds: Keith Dalgleish’s Fort Belvedere is the pick in the hope that he runs after a cracking effort at Ayr last time where he was just touched off in a close finish to a race run in an excellent time. If he fails to show the reserve order is: Spanish Duke; Suits Me; Lord Aeryn; Clayton; Swiftly Done; and Sam Sharp. 3.15 Ian and Kate Hall Macmillan Ganton Stakes, Listed, 3yo+, 1m: Godolphin’s French Navy gets the vote to come out on top. However, if he doesn’t run the reserve preference order is: Baltic Knight; Quick Wit; Sir Patrick Moore; Stipulate; Ladys First; Es Que Love; Fire Ship; Questioning; Pintura; and Gabrial.

may present the most potent threat followed by Style Vendome; Olympic Glory; Parliament Square; and Magician.
3.50 Charity Sprint Trophy (Handicap), 3yo, 0-105, 6f: My order of preference in this wide open event is: Moviesta; Vincentti; Equity Risk; Body and Soul; Intibaah; Bispham Green; Lightnin Hopkins’ Aetna; and Normal Equilibrium. Royal Ascot: Tuesday: 2.30 Queen Anne Stakes: Beauty Parlour ran well in France last time and may be able to wrest this from the grasp of the others who look to me to be headed by: Elusive Kate; Indomito; Giofra; Trade Storm; Reply; and Side Glance. 3.05 King’s Stand Stakes: Preference here is for Soul who may be able to fend off the attentions of the principal dangers of: Maarek; Spirit Quartz; Jack Dexter; and Elusivity. 3.45 St James’s Palace Stakes: The run of Mshawish when finishing fourth in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) could be good enough to win here. Loch Garman, tenth in that race,

Football Round Up
WEIR NAMED HUNGRY BLADES BOSS FOR MORE SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Sheffield United FC is delighted to announce the appointment of David Weir as new manager. The 43-year-old Scot has signed a three-year contract and will begin work immediately with the primary aim of securing promotion from League One. After an illustrious playing career which has included lengthy spells with Everton and Glasgow Rangers, plus 69 caps for Scotland, Weir has recently built a glowing reputation as a coach at Premier League Everton. On his new role, Weir said: “My first thoughts about the job are of excitement, I understand how privileged I am to be named manager of a fantastic football club like Sheffield United. “I realise what a great opportunity is in front of me now and my message to the supporters is that I will work hard and give everything to be successful at Bramall Lane. “I honestly can’t wait to get started and get a real feel for the club, then obviously I am eager to get organised for when the players return for pre-season training later this month.” Julian Winter, United’s Chief Executive, commented: “We are thrilled to appoint David and the three-year contract emphasises the fact that he will assist in a change in club culture. I have stated before that the club needs to act differently and David is young, has a great pedigree and will bring a new vision and leadership to the club. “The process of appointing a new manager has taken slightly longer than we envisaged but by taking our time we believe we have the attracted the right man to take Sheffield United forward.” David Green, United’s Football Club Chairman, added: “It is sincerely hoped that the appointment of David will re-invigorate the club, including the supporters, and he can be assured that he has the full backing of the Board. “We have had the opportunity to rejuvenate Bramall Lane and believe David was the best of the candidates to take us forward in a positive manner.” Chris Morgan, who acted as caretaker manager following the departure of Danny Wilson in April, will revert to his original role as coach.
SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Owls midfielder Paul Corry is ready to push on after his maiden campaign at Hillsborough and is looking forward to the start of pre-season later this month. The talented central midfield man made the transition from part time football in Ireland to full time football with the Owls in August 2012. The 22-year-old went on to make eight appearances for Wednesday last term, with his Championship debut coming in the home clash against Yorkshire rivals Leeds in front of over 28,000 supporters. He told swfc.co.uk: “It was a massive transition coming from part time to full time football and it maybe took me a while to get fully into the swing of things, where football is 100 per cent of your life. “My appearances for the first team came a little sooner than I expected but to get in early was great. “Once you’ve had a taste of first team action, you just want more. You get that taste of playing in front of big crowds and it spurs you on. “When playing in Ireland, the biggest crowds you find are around 5,000 and that’s when you play the likes of Shamrock Rovers.” Corry gained further experience last term in a loan spell with League 1 side Tranmere – making six appearances for the Prenton Park club – and is keen for his learning curve to continue in 2013/14. He added: “I was very curious as to how it would pan out and I am really enjoying it, it’s a great way to spend your life, training every day and playing the sport you love. “I feel like I’ve come a long way, competing at a high level and learning a lot from team mates and coaches. “I’m very ambitious and I want to push myself as much as possible. Pre-season will be vital for me to get my fitness levels up and really push myself forward. “There is a lot of competition here but I have a lot of belief in my abilities. I’m 100 per cent looking forward to getting back into the swing of things and feel very motivated. “Last season was very much a learning curve for everyone in the squad but this season, we know what to expect, we know what we’re in for and hopefully we can get off to a good start. “I’m confident we can push on up the Championship.”

LOUIS TOMLINSON SHOWS HIS SUPPORT DRFC NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson has shown his support for his local team next season by securing his season ticket for Doncaster Rovers return to the Championship. The Doncaster born singer even found time to film a promotional message for Rovers season ticket campaign. Despite a hectic schedule Louis is hoping to attend as many Doncaster Rovers games next season as possible to cheer on his local team in the Championship. Last season Louis took part in a special charity game at Keepmoat Stadium with his football team, The Three Horseshoes, taking on a Legends team consisting of former Rovers manager Dean Saunders amongst others. The match was a huge success with 10,000 people in attendance and thousands of pounds raised for Doncaster Rovers official charity Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. DUO EARN PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTS RUFC NEWS www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United duo Tony Thompson and Nicky Walker have both signed one-year professional contracts. Both have come to the end of their two-year academy scholarships but have now penned their first professional deal. “Tony and Nicky have made good progress and are fully deserving of the young professional contracts they have now signed,” manager Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk “This is a very early stage in their careers and it is now up to them to make further progress from being a development squad player to earn a place in the first-team squad proper. I would expect both lads to have some involvement in our lesser profile preseason matches.” Midfielder Walker, 18, made his professional debut last season coming on as a late substitute during the 4-2 home victory over Cheltenham Town. He also appeared off the bench in the FA Cup win at Notts County and the home win over Accrington Stanley. Goalkeeper Thompson, 18, is yet to make his first-team bow but has been in the senior matchday squad on 25 occasions covering for the injured Scott Shearer.
NEW MANAGER FACTS & FIGURES SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
David Weir is the fifth Scottish-born manager of the Blades, after the former Everton and Rangers defender was named Danny Wilson’s permanent successor on Monday. Falkirk-born Weir, 43, follows in the footsteps of fellow countrymen John Harris, Billy McEwan, Ian Porterfield and Jimmy Sirrel. Scotland’s sixth most capped international, with 69 caps, Weir becomes United 24th permanent manager since the Club was formed in 1889. Other internationals who have managed our famous club include Joe Mercer, Martin Peters, Bryan Robson, the late Gary Speed and most recently Wilson. Weir arrives to take charge at the Lane having previously worked as reserve team manager under David Moyes at Everton last season, after a distinguished playing career. A commanding centre-half in his playing days, the Scotsman is no stranger to the Blades having trained with the club in January 2012 with the view of signing a short-term contract at the time. Weir began his professional career with Falkirk, before moving to Hearts after four seasons with the Bairns. During his time at Tynecastle, the defender won the Scottish Cup in 1998, before skippering Everton for much of his seven-year stay on Merseyside, under two different managers. Weir then signed for Rangers in 2007 and became club captain, replacing Barry Ferguson in April 2009. Weir won three SPL titles in Glasgow in addition to five domestic cup winners medals. For the record, Weir made 587 senior club appearances and captained every club he featured for at some point. Internationally, the new Blades boss won his first cap in 1997 and played in the 1998 World Cup, before retiring in 2002 when Berti Vogts was in charge of the national team. He later returned to the international scene following the appointment of Walter Smith, who he played under at Everton and Rangers.
