Copley’s Column Our regular meeting at celebrity breakfast at the Chantry Hotel in Dronfield was a bit special this week for two reasons. We were celebrating the birthday of veteran top comedian Bobby Dennis. In fairness to Bobby, I will not divulge how many birthdays he has had but suffice to say the candles would cost more than the sumptuous cake presented to him by his close friend Jean Harrison which had been iced with pictures of a piano and a ukulele, instruments that he plays very well. Bobby was visibly moved by this and told me that it was the best birthday he had ever had. The other reason that it was a momentous occasion was that we were there for a photo shoot by resident photographer, Mel Day, depicting the seven privileged recipients of the Derek Dooley blazers, of which I am proud and honoured to be one. Regrettably it was not possible to have got all seven of us there, but I, along with Tony Barrington, Trevor Barron, Peter Whitney and Jim Burgin were more than pleased to be photographed with Derek’s widow Sylvia who is an absolute sweetheart. It was lovely to see my very old friend, Joan Lee, long time landlady of the Hearts of Oak public house in Dronfield Woodhouse, looking extremely fit despite having had ninety birthdays, and attended with son Mick. On Friday night , the 21st of June, along with some friends, I shall be attending a grand show spectacular to benefit guide dogs for the blind. This is guaranteed to be a great night with the appearance of superb female vocalist

Brooke Waddle, the multi award winning Stephanie King’s Stageshow and Dronfield’s favourite band Junkyard Dog. The show starts at 8.00 p.m. and entrance fee is £3.00. There will also be an auction and raffles etc. so go and support this worthy cause. I recently went to see an impressive Elvis tribute performer, Mark ‘Elvis’ Nixon at the Devonshire Inn at Dore and was pleased to accept his friend request the following day onFfacebook, as he is appearing in Majorca this summer. As we will be spending three weeks there on our family holidays in July and August, I thought it would be nice to support him. This week he sent me a private message thanking me for my write up and amazingly told me that he had been shown the paper the previous evening by a holidaymaker in Palma Nova. It is not often I have a night out in Sheffield, but made an exception this week on a lad’s night out with a gang of us and the highlight of my night was a visit to a Brazilian restaurant, whose name escapes me, in Leopold Square, where the food was of very high quality and there was plenty of it, not really in my favour as I am desperately trying to get in shape for my holidays.

TRAMLINES TAKES Weekly Wit With... OVER MEADOWHALL ALBERT

Music lovers wanting a taste of Tramlines need only wait a few weeks as the festival takes over Meadowhall. The Meadowhall Tramlines Teaser Weekend takes place on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July showcasing some of the regions finest up and coming artists. The Teaser will give music fans a taste of what is to come at Tramlines Festival. Meadowhall is working with the Tramlines Team to serve up a tasty treat - 2 days filled with music, a BBQ, food stalls and much more. Alex Caley, Events Manager for Meadowhall said: “Tramlines is an award-wining festival that attracts some of the biggest names from across the music industry to our region. Meadowhall is delighted to be part of the team this year, hosting the ‘Tramlines Teaser Weekend’ outside in the Oasis Dining Quarter Courtyard, and we look forward to welcoming Tramliners to the Centre.” The Meadowhall Tramlines Teaser Weekend runs from 9am – 10pm on Saturday 6 July and from 10am – 9pm on Sunday 7 July at the Oasis Dine In Quarter Courtyard. Music will start at 1pm on both days. Christian Carlisle from BBC Introducing will be presenting the stage over the two days showcasing some of the regions finest up and coming musical talents. Sarah Nulty, Festival Director at Tramlines said: “It is great to be working with Meadowhall to provide music fans with just a snap shot of what they can expect at Tramlines later in July. We are totally committed to giving up and coming artists a platform to show their talent and the Meadowhall Tramlines Teaser Weekend is another great example of that. What better way to whet your appetite and get a taste of what is to come.” The festival, The UK’s biggest inner city festival, returns for a fifth year on Friday 19 July, and runs until Sunday 21 July, with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. Day tickets to the festival cost just £6 plus booking fee and can be purchased from http://2013.tramlines. org.uk/tickets/ under 5s go free. Wrist bands are needed for the main stages and music venues you would usually pay to enter (Leadmill, Harley, DQ, Plug, O2, Corporation and so on) The wristband will also get you priority entry into free venues operating in the city centre.

HAWLEY RETURNS UNDER THE BIG TOP After an extraordinary few years, Richard Hawley is back playing his hometown for a one-off northern show this summer.

Hawley will be taking to the stage as part of new event, ‘Under The Big Top’ in Sheffield’s Graves Park, taking place on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th July. Organisers are said to be ecstatic to be promoting the Sheffield-bred star in his hometown following his string of recent successes. 2012 saw the release of Standing at The Sky’s Edge, his hugely acclaimed and highest charting album-to-date. Shortlisted as ‘An Album Of The Year’ at the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and topping a ream of Best Album polls including a BRIT Award nomination. Kicking off the series on Friday 12th July, renowned live performers, Levellers will be taking to the stage to showcase their impressive back catalogue of recorded music; the band sold more platinum, gold and silver albums in the 1990’s than any other act. With over 25 years in the business, the band promise visitors a legendary, Leveller’s performance. Local eleven-piece “genre-busting party band” Bison will be supporting the Levellers in their Friday performance and organiser’s promise a few exciting additions throughout the evening to add to the circus-themed merriment! Event organiser Carly Whitfield says “As a Sheffield-based company, we really wanted to keep a focus on the all the local talent and produce that the city has to offer. We’ve brought in Bradfield Brewery for their specialist real ales and will be choosing local food traders to really show visitors what we’re about and to be a celebration of our community!” With only a handful of Richard Hawley and Levellers performances planned for this summer, this is bound to be the hottest ticket in town. Tickets for both concerts are now on sale from www. underthebigtop.co.uk, or by calling the box office on 0114 234 9979. Tickets are also available in person from Rare & Racy, Devonshire Street, Sheffield and also from Bradfield Brewery, Watt House Farm, High Bradfield, Sheffield, Yorkshire S6 6LG.

SNODGRASS

You know you’re having a bad day when even the Rice Crispies give you the silent treatment. Had a scary moment when I was opening my expensive new furniture with a stanley knife. I damn near slit my shelf. I will never understand why my fridge has a picture of a carrot on the beer drawer. “I can’t decide” said my wife. “Shall we go for Sweet ‘n’ Sour or Cheese ‘n’ Chive?” “To be honest, I’ve changed my mind completely” I replied. “I’m not letting you name our twins”. Scientists have finally perfected a device that allows them to translate bird song into speech. During testing this morning, the dawn chorus appeared to be several thousand birds all shouting: “Will you shut up and go back to sodding sleep?” “A friend of mine saw a man kissing a woman outside the local pub last night.” said my wife this morning. “Oh really?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied, “Bald head, blue jeans, black trainers and a white t-shirt.” “Not guilty,” I said, “The woman I kissed had long hair and was wearing a dress.”

TRAM LINK SERVICE TOPS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION A new survey by a leading South Yorkshire transport provider has revealed unprecedented customer satisfaction levels. The survey, which was conducted on board Stagecoach Yorkshire’s three SupertramLink services in Sheffield, asked 750 passengers to rate their satisfaction using the service against how they previously travelled. SupertramLink services SL1, SL2 and SL3, have been progressively introduced since 2007, to provide a seamless connection between the Supertram and outlying suburbs by purchasing one ticket that covers the whole bus and tram journey. The services allow customers to easily reach areas of the city that would have previously required a long walk or a car journey. One of the targets of these services was to attract people to the bus and tram who travelled by car and, of those surveyed, 30 per cent of users used to travel by car. Almost 100 per cent of passengers on the SL3 service said they would recommend the service to a friend, while more than 85 per cent of passengers across the three services were either satisfied or very satisfied with the frequency of the service. The majority of passengers surveyed felt that cleanliness of the bus, positive driver attitude and the amount of information available to them added to the experience of travelling on the bus. Also, more than 90 per cent of the passengers who use the SL3 service use it to access the Supertram at Crystal Peaks. Stagecoach Yorkshire managing director, Paul Lynch said: “We are really pleased that our customers are happy with the Stagecoach services. It’s good for us to be able to see where we have been doing well so we can continue to improve our offer for our passengers. “The SupertramLink is an important initiative for Stagecoach and we value the opinion of our passengers so it’s important that we look at the results diligently and look for areas that can be further revised.”

I find the runes very interesting for divination. NEWS & INFORMATION

SHEFFIELD 50+ WELCOMED THE SIGNING OF THE DUBLIN DECLARATION

Sheffield 50+ welcomes the signing in Sheffield by Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council of the Dublin Declaration on Age-friendly Cities and Communities. It was signed on the same day as it was signed by many European leaders and dignitaries attending the ‘EU Summit on Active and Healthy Ageing’ in Dublin. It is a public declaration of Sheffield’s commitment to being a ‘City for all Ages’. The wording of the agreement is very much in line with the aims and values of Sheffield 50+ and we look forward to working with the City Council to ensure these goals are actively pursued. Sheffield is already a very good place to grow older as our members agreed in a recent survey but we mustn’t get complacent and there is always more that can be achieved with working together and listening to older people. Tony Maltby (Chair of Sheffield 50+) says: “ We warmly welcome Sheffield becoming a signatory to this Declaration. It will help achieve the objectives enshrined in the Councils’ own policy document ‘A City for all Ages’, which similarly adopts an ‘active ageing’ approach. As a representative organisation of over 2,400 people over 50 living in Sheffield, we do however remain concerned that the implementation of this important strategy has marginalised our ability to influence it and indeed become directly involved in that implementation. The membership of the City for All Ages Board is dominated by the Councils own members and officers. However, we note that there is a possibility for ‘wider representation’ which we trust that the Board will fully exploit and engage with us to use the untapped experience and expertise of our diverse membership’’. The full declaration can be read at: http://www.ahaconference2013.ie/dublin_ declaration/dublin_declaration_text

STEPFAMILIES: THE NEED FOR TAILORMADE WILLS Sarah and George came to see me last month to make new wills. It was their second marriage and each had children from a previous marriage who spent time with either parent. Making a will for a “new” family with children from various relationships is more complex than for the traditional family situation. In the latter case there may be a few discussions about who to appoint executors and who should be the children’s guardians. However most people are happy to leave

everything to their wife or husband and then to their children if both die. Stepfamilies are more difficult to advise; there may be only a limited amount of money to split between a number of children. If George leaves everything to Sarah then any dependent children from his first marriage could make a claim against his estate. How successful they are depends upon a number of factors – such as how much was in his estate; and the relative means and needs of the various beneficiaries. If they are not careful more of his estate will disappear in legal fees than end up with the beneficiaries. If you are in a similar position to Sarah & George make sure that you get good advice drawing up your will. You can contact us to discuss your situation in a free initial consultation with a member of our wills team. Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors are at 10 Kenwood Park Road Nether Edge. Tel 0114 2290160. They deal with wills and probate; property issues; tax and elderly client advice. www.rwatchorn.co.uk

Kidney disease is an illness vets see quite frequently in older cats and spotting the signs early can greatly increase the chances of dealing with the problem. Leading veterinary charity, PDSA, is keen to highlight the importance of healthy kidneys for our feline friends. Kidneys are responsible for filtering out waste products from blood and as pets get older their kidneys can become less effective. This gradual deterioration is called chronic renal failure (CRF), and can lead to a toxic build up in the pet’s body. Sadly, owners of cats with CRF sometimes think that the signs of this disease are simply due to their cat getting older, which can often delay treatment. The disease develops gradually and affected cats often won’t show symptoms until about 70% of their kidney function is lost. Elaine Pendlebury, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, says: “Signs of CRF can include reduced appetite and energy, gradual weight loss, bad breath and mouth ulcers, as well as increased thirst and urination. Owners may put these changes down to ageing, rather than kidney failure, so may not immediately think to take their cat along to their vet.” Although the affected cat’s kidneys can’t return to normal, there are treatments that can slow the development of CRF and improve a pet’s quality of life. This is why it’s vital that if a cat is showing any of these symptoms you make an appointment to see your vet for a health check: · Reduced appetite and energy · Gradual weight loss · A poor coat · Drinking and urinating more frequently · Bad breath · Vomiting · Mouth ulcers If a cat is diagnosed with CRF, the vet may prescribe medicines and change the cat’s diet. Prescription diets containing carefully formulated levels of protein, vitamins and minerals are important because they reduce the filtering work that the kidneys must do. Drinking plenty of fresh clean water is also crucial for cats with CRF, so clean water must be available at all times. A cat with CRF will need regular monitoring, but by recognising the signs of the disease early on, owners can help their cat enjoy a good quality of life for as long as possible. CLUBLAND AWARDS 2013 UP AND RUNNING VOICE OF THE STORM NIGHTINGALE

It’s here! Yorkshire Clubland’s premier awards event is now open for your votes! Once again, we need YOUR votes in each of the categories- which this year are – Best Male Vocalist – Best Female Vocalist – Best Duo/Trio – Best Vocal Group – Best Live Band – Best Tribute Act – Best Newcomer – Best Comedy Act – and the Clubland Appreciation Award. Last year’s Awards included a record number of new winners, and reflected the wealth of young talent around Clubland. Tristan Drew, Laura Magann and Ellie Gent will no doubt be hoping to repeat their success as Best Tribute, Female

and All Round winners, whilst The Cameleonz and Coast will be looking to do well again in the Best Duo and Best Live Band categories. Although Heidi Mills can’t repeat her success as Best Newcomer, she will no doubt hope to challenge Laura as Best Female! Meanwhile all-girl vocal group Halo will no doubt hope that they have caught our readers’ eye as Best Vocal Group for the third year running, and we always wonder who might have made the breakthrough to challenge Jimmy Carol in the comedy section. In addition, the Clubland Appreciation Award will recognise long and outstanding contributions

to entertainment – Paul Shane, who sadly passed away so recently, was a recent recipient of this award. We will shortly be releasing details of the Awards Night in the autumn, featuring cameo performances from many of the winners, so watch the Mercury carefully for ticket details and book early! As usual, the night is sure to be a sell-out. This year we have decided to make the voting window a little longer, to ensure the results fairly reflect the current most popular acts in each category. As always, readers can vote by post, email (voting@

mercurynewspaper.co.uk) and also this year by private message on our Facebook page! Votes will only count if they include nominations in a minimum of three categories, and multiple votes will not be included. Last but certainly not least, we must thank our sponsors who help make the event such a success! A voting form for this years awards can be found on page 26 of this weeks papaer and is also available to download from our website at www. mercurynewspaper.co.uk

SORRY I’M LATE MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

There was an interesting article I mentioned on my show the other day about some of the excuses given for taking a day off work. According to a recent poll would you believe… “My trousers split on the way to work”, “I’ve got a sore finger”, “My new girlfriend bit me in a delicate place”, “I slipped on a coin”, “A can of baked beans landed on my big toe”, “I drank too much and fell asleep on someone’s floor - I don’t know where I am” …have all actually been used!! I asked about strange and bizarre sounding excuses given, and recalled the tale of not liking P.E. at school and using probably 1001 reasons to try and get off the lesson back in the day, which I must confess to. In fact I remember only too well the dread when it came to Thursday, which was always the day for some reason, and pretending to be sick. My Mum would use the wording “…Trevor can’t take part due to a bilious attack” in the note she wrote to excuse me. Not sure what was worse in the end, taking part or seeing the bewildered expression on the teacher’s face wondering what ‘bilious attack’ actually meant. Have you ever got away with not taking part in something or having a day off with a lame excuse? We had lots of colourful and interesting suggestions mentioned which ran from “my fish died” to the infamous “dog ate the homework”. I think full marks go to the honest “I’ve had a hair dye disaster” though.

RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and all of the money required to run the service is raised by our volunteers. This week we held a collection on the Tanyard Shopping Centre at Wickersley in Rotherham and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who donated to help us raise £138.76. Also thank you to Lucy, Barry, Andy Jonathan and Lee who held the collection tins. Another of our regular fundraising methods is our online shopping centre at easyfundraising. Each month the site has a competition and June’s prize is a holiday for four at Alton Towers. The prize includes two days entry into the Alton Towers theme park plus an overnight stay at the Splash Landings Hotel. Everything you need to keep the family occupied, well for 48 hours at least! This prize comes courtesy of our great friends Viking! To enter all you need to do is make a purchase through the easyfundraising site before the end of June. Each time you make a purchase you receive an entry into the draw so, twenty purchases means twenty chances to win! Plus we’ll give you TWO entries when you make any purchase from competition sponsor Viking. And tell your friends about easyfundraising to earn extra entries into the draw too. Or visit the easyfundraising site and take a look at the blog and enter the competition in a completely new way. Answer the multiple choice question correctly and you will earn another entry into the competition. So there’s plenty of ways to enter this months competition and you can quickly build up your entries as you take advantage of the 2000+ retailers available through the site. This months competition sponsors are Viking – suppliers of thousands of business products, from pens and pencils to office furniture and everything in between. Did you know Viking also sell a wide range of products for the home, including games consoles, games and accessories, home entertainment, cameras, DVD box sets and so much more. Remember that when you purchase through easyfundraising the cost you pay for your item is the same as it would be normally. The donation to Radio Nightingale comes from the retailer.

IN AN ASHTRAY CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

It’s coming up to 6 years since the smoking ban was passed by the then-Labour government. It might seem after all that time the situation is all settled with everyone in agreement that it is a ‘good thing. But it’s an oversimplification to see everything as fine. True, there was no ‘Smokers Spring’ with thousands rising up and smoking illegally indoors and demanding their human rights. Mostly people accepted it, going outside to have their fags or by simply going home. The latter action by too many, who stayed there and didn’t go out much again, contributed to the closure of thousands of clubs, pubs and bingo halls. Many people felt betrayed at the sudden inclusion of private clubs, which were originally going to be allowed to decide for themselves. Six years on, it seems that the number of groups campaigning for reform (note reform not repeal) of the ban seem to multiply. Groups like Smokers Justice run by the formidable Phil Johnson in Leicester, to name one. Such groups campaign for more choice especially in places like clubs where there is the possibility of a separate room for smokers, something the CIU considers would be a good thing. I’m not going to go into statistics and counter-statistics here (Phil does a thorough job with those!) The debate has recently become more heated after a speech by the MP Pat Glass at the CIU AGM in Blackpool in April. She praised clubs for their invaluable community roles and in that I agreed with her. But her remarks about trying to amend the ban being a waste of time and that the health benefits are clear, have caused a big stir. A letter by another ‘amend the ban’ campaigner, Sean Spillane, in this month’s Club Journal, criticized her remarks and highlighted the links between club closures and the smoking ban. Mrs Glass, in her right to reply, said that her views remained intact so we can assume she wouldn’t be in favour of separate smokers rooms in clubs. Loneliness is a health issue especially for older people and they are more likely to have been affected by the smoking ban So easy, so why not? www. either because they can’t stand easyfundraising.org.uk/ outside in the rain, wind and snow radionightingale having their ciggies. Or because their clubs have closed down. Radio Nightingale broadcasts We have to see the bigger picture 24 hours a day, 7 days a week here about sociability, society and for the patients and staff of the rights to choose. Our smoking ban Rotherham General Hospital on is extreme compared to other EU 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For countries, which is why six years more information about the station on, the debate has grown rather visit www.radionightingale.org.uk than disappeared.

SAMUEL TAYLOR THE PLUG 20/6/13

PREVIEW Words by KT Evans

Although known for its steel factories, Hendersons Relish and sheer amount of trees, it’s fair to say Sheffield prides itself on its local music scene. Whether it be home grown acts performing across the city or bands travelling to one of our many live venues, music fans flock to Sheffield in order to catch some of the most talented up-andcoming acts this country and beyond nurtured. Samuel Taylor is exactly that… Dead Like Harry – ring any bells? If you call Sheffield home, we’re pretty sure it will do. Although no longer touring the music circuit, lead vocalist Samuel Taylor and co travelled venues across the UK and sold over 5000 albums to ensure they landed themselves on the local music wall of fame. Having located from Sheffield to the capital city of London, Samuel worked alongside some of the world’s finest producers including Grammy nominated producer Andy Chatterley in order to build up his already blossoming repertoire. And it seemed to pay off. 2012 saw the artist / producer work with some of the best session musicians in the UK, however his musical passion overcame the star when the basement of his North London home turned into his very own recording studio. Working on his brand new EP ‘Some Nobody To Me’ and after completing a UK tour support with Nerina Pallot in February 2013, the album is now ready for a full release. ‘My debut EP is a collection of tracks written over the last year or so,’ explains Samuel Taylor. ‘It begins to tell the story of the last year of my life, in an abstract kind of way. Inspired by the sound of stripped back records like Ryan Adams ‘Heartbreaker’ and Gillian Welch ‘The Harrow and The Harvest’. The record was mostly tracked live in a house studio in Stoke Newington with a band of very talented musicians including Damon Wilson (Drums), Luke Potashnick (Guitar and Bass), Richard Causon (Piano).’ ‘I wanted the honesty of the lyrics to shine through with the bare production of the tracks. I had spent a lot of time over the last few years playing guitar on lots of Pop tracks that always felt very crowded in sound to me. I was used to getting on the bus after sessions and listening to older recordings, early Dylan and Van Morrison albums, to help clear my head. I wanted to hark back to something raw and imperfect, something I felt was more honest somehow. I was in a dark place when I wrote some of those tracks and I felt exposed, I wanted the sound of the record to reflect that feeling.’ Samuel Taylor is to perform at Sheffield’s Plug on 20th June. Tickets are on sale at www.the-plug.com

round-up by stuart renton

It’s like a dream come true: those boys from One Direction have a perfume coming out later this year and I’d consider it my solemn privilege to name the thing. But there literally are too many names to choose from. Where do I begin? I really think “Bargain Basement” is appropriate (as that’s where both the scent and their records will be in a few years’ time). Or there’s “Utterly Forgetful”, which sums up my feelings entirely about the saccharine headline stealing boy band that contains the enormous ass, Harry Styles. Or, how about “Off the Wrist”, which is how the scent came about the scent in the first place (apparently girls couldn’t get enough of the stuff so the record company decided to bottle it). It’s all one huge and loathsome merchandising affair but it is nice that the bottles have the warning on the side: Do Not Swallow on them, which apparently is an automatic reflex any girl experiences when getting within six feet of any member of One Direction. Lovely. Big Brother started again and we’ve got the same bunch of baffling miscreants we have always had. But this year we’ve got a total bunch of angry wannabes who are so much grumpier than those of previous years. In one corner you’ve got Sallie, the tattooed fire-breather who thinks saggy side boob is her personal responsibility and not the reason for which bras were invented. And in the other corner you’ve got the rest of the world. That’s right, Sallie is prepared to fight a one bimbo battle against the world, and she doesn’t care who she upsets in the process. It’s only day five and we’ve already had more fights than there are on Pay Per View. We’ve already had this year’s Race War, in which Jemima was talking about the guys she fancied (but not black guys), and it was turned into a ridiculous race-prejudice issue blown out of all proportions. It’s really quite ridiculous – these people need some perspective. Or alternatively – a damn good slap! And speaking of slappers, Big Brother is not always easy viewing when you’ve got Jemima a 41 (going on 60) year old positively dripping all over Sam, the 22 year old who’s so horny he’d sllep with a dead donkey if he had the chance. And mate, if you end up bonking Jemima that analogy won’t be far from the truth. And while we’re talking Big Brother, has anyone seen Rylan on Big Brother’s Bit on the Side? I say have you seen him – you couldn’t miss him! He’s had these veneers done on his teeth and he now looks like something Lester Piggot would ride… It’s at this point that I’m NOT going to make some scurrilous comment about Rylan liking to be ridden

2013

With more than 100,000 festival attendees to one of the biggest events of the entire year, Download is all about one thing…the music. Although the line-up may not be quite to the tastes of the socalled ‘mainstream’ music supporter, its seems that with ticket sales totalling in the top five best-selling weekends of the year, this is a striking indication that rock, metal, punk and hardcore are quickly becoming some of the most globally rooted for live genres…and hell did we have a good weekend. Friday 14th June was all about one thing…the head liner. Feared by some but adored by many many more, Slipknot aren’t just first class riff kings, but also masters of putting one a more than memorable live performance. Head to toe in standard Slipknot attire a.k.a. baggy jumpsuits and honestly the scariest masks you will ever lay your eyes on, tracks ‘Wait and Bleed,’ ‘Psychosocial’ and ‘Spit It Out’ were proceeded by anthem ‘Duality’ to close what has since been described by vocalist Corey Taylor as one of the best shows the band have ever played. Kudos Castle Donnington. Day two (or fondly titled ‘Hangover Saturday’) was easily the broadest line-up of the three day belter, meaning that fans could have their musical preferences well and truly tantalized. Main stage head bangers Mastadon personified all that is brutally gritty heavy metal, alongside Jimmy Eat World on the second Zippo stage who instigated the girliest dancing of the weekend with their tune ‘The Middle.’ Why there was so many males dressed n floor length white wedding dressing will forever remain a mystery to us. The Pepsi Maxx stage harboured its best line-up of the weekend seeing Southern screamers Heart Of a Coward spit out their fiercest live performance to date. Midlands clan Bury Tomorrow produced yet another enormous set worthy of main stage credentials, although with the Saturday headlined by British icons Iron Maiden, nobody can please over 100,000 people with such ease and confidence as one of the greatest selling rock bands of all time. The saddest day of Download as no one wants such a fantastic weekend to end, Sunday 16th June may well have totally altered our perception of live music. Ok so we all know that in order to supply the crowd with a truly memorable performance, both atmosphere, adrenaline and enthusiasm are all paramount for success. 30 Seconds To Mars know this all too well, however something exceptionally unusual happened at around 7.45pm on a breezy summers evening…almost 90,000 spectators fell deadly silent, for one simple reason. Jared Leto. A voice so powerful and presence so daunting, if anybody had 100% control of their crowd, Leto would be victorious. Wow.

Live Previews_Reviews_News Opinion - Single/Album Reviews_Listings

like the head horse at the Grand National – I’m beneath such things… But those teeth. My god. Whose idea were they? You can practically see them from SPACE!? And the worst part is that he had pretty decent teeth before, but now you could open bottles with them, and I’m talking about a whole crate and not just one bottle at once! Poor Rylan can’t even speak properly any more, he’s got this weird sort of lisp as though he’s gobbling one of the boys from One Direction while trying to floss at the same time. Distracting gnashers aside, this was a role Rylan was made for and he effortlessly presents the show - and absolutely all power to him. Neiiigh! There’s a vote of support from Shergar as well! The new Superman film came out last week and it was more Man of Cardboard than Man of Steel. The movie is basically one long fight scene and seems to have thrown logic and character development out of the window. It’s just so very shallow and contrived. Here’s the story, as much as it is: General Zod finds his way to Earth to settle a score with the Man of Steel, and he’s prepared to level entire cities in the process. And that’s about it. There’s nothing of substance here; it’s all been abandoned in favour of explosions and superhumans flinging each other through buildings. Exciting… sort of. Because once you’ve seen that a handful of times, it gets old! Ultimately, it’s another disappointing return to the superhero on the large screen. It could have been so much better. People will flock to see it at the box office, but I felt there was literally a gaping hole where the story and character development needed to be and where they had replaced those elements with special effects. But confusing and blurry does not hide the fact that the effects are really not that great in the first place. If the Man of Steel was a children’s report card it would be sent home with a smacked bottom and the words ‘Must Try Harder’ written on their forehead. More next week!

Home & Away Mon: As Casey is taken in for questioning, Ricky pleads with Adam to stop. Casey says the only person who can corroborate his story is Jett, with whom he was playing computer games. Tues: John is adamant that he does not want Jett to give evidence to the police about Casey. However, Jett sees things differently and Marilyn finds it very difficult to not intervene. Wed: Heath elicits the truth from Kyle. Bianca discovers a programme for pregnant students that would suit Rosie, away in the city. Thurs: Indi calls off the search for Romeo and finally lets go of him, while patching up the strained relationship with her father. Dex becomes anxious when April gets a placement at the same hospital as him. Fri: When Casey is held on remand, the Braxton brothers form a united front after Ricky admits to the deceit in which she has participated. Neighbours Mon: Stunned that Mark Brennan is still alive, Kate counters Mason’s natural hostility to him by saying that she needs to get closure. Tues: Mark Brennan’s declaration of love leaves Kate in turmoil. While she dithers and seeks advice from her friends, however, she puts her relationship with Mason in jeopardy. Wed: Lauren conceals a picture she finds in one of her old sketchbooks. The inaugural Bite Club goes well, despite some chest beating by Matt and Brad. Thurs: In an effort to avoid Bailey after their kiss, Rani rewrites the ending of the play but then ends up confessing to Callum after a series of misunderstandings. Fri: Suspicious of Paul’s motives in befriending Mason, Toadie does some digging. What he learns unsettles the Turners, who ask him to take over the case for the sentencing hearing.

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

After last week’s rant, I thought I’d better rein it in a bit this week, but then...... I run the Facebook page for Marukyu Europe, one we try to keep as informative and entertaining as possible, featuring customer catch reports, videos and other snippets which are generally well received; I enjoy it too. Guess what? I’ve just put a picture of a new product up (Credence Marine Liquid if you’re interested) and the very first reply was “...freebie sample?” This drives me, and every other angling company no doubt, absolutely mad! Why should ANY company dish out free products at the behest of a angler who wants something for nothing?? Most firms offer a budget for registered or recognised charities, especially those engaged with introducing juniors to the sport, but you wouldn’t believe how many try it on.....! Would that same angler nip into Tesco or similar and ask for free food? A new DVD just to try? How about just borrow some clothes for Saturday night? No, I would wager not..... but it is apparently acceptable to ask for goods from fishing companies.... Now this might sound like another rant (I should rename this column The Angry Angler!) but it isn’t and here’s why. Marukyu Europe, either directly or indirectly, get up to a hundred or so requests every week for free product; how much would you like? A tenners worth? Twenty? Okay....and we’ll post it out to you as well..... let’s do the maths; a hundred anglers claiming ten pounds worth is one thousand pounds per week or fifty two thousand pounds per calendar year. Add postage, and you are looking for at least seventy five thousand pounds every year....would your business accept that? Up the individual’s request and the sums become mind boggling and completely unsustainable. The thing is, what would Marukyu or others get in return? I would suggest that no useful feedback would be forthcoming, no catch reports or pictures in the press, nothing for the company website, so it’s fairly safe to say it would be a direct loss; again would your business benefit from such economics? You could argue that there may be a subsequent sale? Possibly, but the odds are against it and why should they? If every company gives away free bait or tackle, why pay for any of it? The fact is, it’s just another example of the ‘something for nothing’ culture or the never ending quest for fishing fame; if it’s free, then that angler will no doubt tell his mate on the bank that he is now ‘sponsored’ as he gets his bait for nothing....madness! Marukyu and all other bait firms are aware that consumers are constantly looking for value for money and perhaps do not want to commit to a hefty purchase; that’s why many offer smaller volumes at a more affordable rate. Many offer competitions which DO see a tangible return, whether it be a Facebook ‘like’, a catch report to share, or some other benefit in exchange for a bait or tackle prize. it’s a reciprocal arrangement though; if the company gets a return, then you are more likely to get something free..... worth thinking about?

HANDSWORTH TO HELP GROW THE GAME More youngsters will be able to play football in Sheffield, after Handsworth Junior Sporting Club were awarded a £5,000 Grow the Game grant to help boost participation in the sport. The grant, awarded by the Football Foundation as part of their £4.5 million investment into the game to date nationally, has been delivered in partnership with Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA. Handsworth Junior Sporting Club will use the grant to fund the development of a further two junior teams – at boys U7 and girls U10 level – whilst also allowing two more coaches to gain qualifications. Dave Wragg, secretary of Handsworth Junior Sports Club, said: “The grant from the Football Foundation will allow the club to promote the game further into our local community.” So far Grow the Game has awarded 894 separate grants to grassroots football clubs nationally, with the aim of creating 3,716 brand new football teams competing in FA affiliated leagues and introducing 70,489 new players to the game, whilst helping coaches complete 14,111 courses. Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation – the country’s largest sports charity, said: “I congratulate Handsworth Juniors Sporting Club for receiving this Grow the Game grant, which will increase sport participation and support football development in the region. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA for their help in making this happen. “The Football Foundation is committed – with funding provided by the Premier League, The FA and Government – to improving grassroots community sporting provision and help make this legacy vision a reality.” For more information about the Football Foundation visit www.footballfoundation.org.uk or follow them on Twitter.

Football Round Up BLADES AT HOME IN ANNIVERSARY FIXTURE SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades will be at home in the opening fixture of the new season, it has been confirmed this week. Notts County - the world’s oldest Football League club - will be the opposition. The Football League is to mark the 125th anniversary of its first season (1888/89) with a programme of special anniversary league fixtures to be played on the opening weekend of the 2013/14 campaign. The six matches - two in each division - will feature a number of the founder members of the world’s original league football competition, as well as other pairings of historical significance. In the Championship, four founder members will go head-to-head with Derby County, League champions in 1972 and 1975 hosting Blackburn Rovers, champions of England in 1912, 1914 and 1995. Lancashire rivals Burnley and Bolton Wanderers will face each other at Turf Moor, one of only three grounds used in the 1888/89 league season that is still in use today. The two clubs have met each other in league football on 114 occasions. Another of the original grounds, Deepdale, will host the meeting of founder members Preston North End and Wolverhampton Wanderers in League 1. Since hosting its first league match on the opening day of the very first season, Deepdale has staged 2,342 Football League matches, more than any other stadium. Also in League 1, the world’s oldest Football League club, Notts County, will be the visitors at the world’s oldest professional football ground when they are hosted by the Blades. In League 2, Accrington Stanley will visit The Football League’s newest ground and newest member - Rodney Parade the home of the reformed Newport County. While Hartlepool United will visit Rochdale in the 137th encounter between the two clubs - the most played Football League match between current members. In announcing the 125th Anniversary fixtures, Football League Chairman Greg Clarke said: “For 125 years, Football League clubs have delivered a compelling spectacle, week after week. In the process, attracting a total audience of more than 2.2 billion people and building indelible relationships with their local communities. “Our clubs and their supporters are the heartbeat of the domestic game, giving English league football a breadth and popularity that is unrivalled anywhere in the world. “We look forward to celebrating 125 years of incredible matches, unforgettable moments and intense footballing rivalry.” To find out more about the 125th Anniversary of The Football League visit FL125.co.uk

TESTIMONIAL UPDATE SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

The Owls head over the Pennines to face Stockport on 9 July (7.45pm) and visiting supporters are reminded that ticket prices have been set for Rodger Wylde’s testimonial game. Wednesday have been allocated an initial 1,250 tickets at Edgeley Park, with the option of more if required. Prices are as follows: Adults: £10 Concessions: £5 (over 65s and 16-21s) Under 16s: £3 Supporters requiring either a wheelchair bay or ambulant disabled tickets should contact Stockport direct on 0845 6885799. Former Owls striker Wylde spent eight years at Hillsborough between 1972 and 1980, posting 168 appearances and scoring 54 goals along the way. The Sheffield product went on to play for Oldham, Sporting Lisbon, Sunderland, Barnsley and Rotherham before signing for Stockport, where he hung up his boots in 1989 after one season with the Hatters. Upon his retirement, Wylde completed a degree in physiotherapy and was appointed as club physiotherapist at Stockport in March 1989 and has remained in post for 24 years. In 2006, Wylde was inducted into Stockport’s Hall of Fame.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH ROVERS DRFC NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk At the recent ‘Manager Meets The Fans’ event, several supporters indicated that they should like to offer some voluntary hours to helping Doncaster Rovers in one capacity or another. Rovers fan engagement project “In Rovers We Trust” welcomes all suggestions from fans, and so we have investigated from within any ways in which we could make provision for some volunteers to help the club. If you have one or two hours to spare, would you like to donate them towards helping the club? Doncaster Rovers are looking for volunteers from amongst our supporters to help the club in the following two areas: Meet and Greeters: Could you spend an hour before kick-off on match days to join a team of ‘meet and greeters’ around the stadium, assisting people with directions, informing them of activities taking place, making them aware of programme seller locations etc etc? If you should like to help your club in this capacity please contact customerservices@ doncasterroversfc.co.uk for further information. Gardeners: Green fingers, with time to spare? Would you be willing to devote some time to the upkeep of the fans’ Memorial Garden which is situated at the entrance to the stadium (Car Park 1)? In addition, if your time allowed, your assistance with the pruning of shrubbery would be most welcome (under the direction of the Grounds Manager). If you should like to help in this capacity please contact Andy.thompson@doncasterroversfc.co.uk Further voluntary opportunities may arise in time, and will be indicated via the official club website.

OUTSTANDING DRAW SAYS EVANS RUFC NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

‘An outstanding draw’ was manager Steve Evans’ response after the Millers were drawn at home to Sheffield Wednesday in the first round of the Capital One Cup. The draw, which was announced at 9.30am this morning, will see the Owls make their first ever visit to New York Stadium, whilst it also marks the first ever competitive South Yorkshire derby at the Millers new home. “It would be fair to say that it is nothing short of an outstanding draw for the club,” Evans told www. themillers.co.uk “This is one match that everyone in football will want to be at.” Evans also emphasised the chances of a live game on TV, with the Millers hoping to attract a worldwide audience for the visit of their Championship neighbours. “I would expect that not only will it be a full house, but I would further expect that the live television cameras will be making their way to the New York Stadium for what will be a fantastic occasion,” he added. The ties will be played the week commencing 5th August.

OWLS TO FACE BRAGA SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday can confirm a second pre-season friendly in Portugal next month against Portuguese outfit Braga. The Owls will face the Premeira Liga side during the week-long training camp in Portugal on Tuesday 16 July. The game will take place in Albufeira, although it is yet to be confirmed which one of three stadiums the fixture will be played. A provisional kick-off time of 8.00pm is in place. Braga finished fourth in the Portuguese top flight last term, qualifying to play in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League play-off round in the process. The club were competing on two fronts in 2012/13 after qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League for only the second time in their history. Braga eliminated Italian side Udinese in the play-off round on penalties and competed in the group stage against Cluj, Galatasaray and Manchester United – the highlight of which was a 2-0 win over Galatasaray away from home. The venue for the fixture in Albufeira will be confirmed in due course on the Owls’ official website, swfc.co.uk. Four days after the friendly clash against Braga, Wednesday face Hull City at Estádio Municipal de Albufeira, on Saturday 20 July.
