MICHAEL BUBLE TO PERFORM FULL SHOW REHEARSAL FOR FANS IN SHEFFIELD
Global superstar Michael Buble has been rehearsing at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena ahead of his series of sold-out dates including 10 nights at the O2 Arena in London, 5 nights at The O2 in Dublin and an extensive tour of North America. Michael has announced that following successful technical rehearsals and sound checks he will be opening the doors to allow local fans to be the very first to enjoy the complete full show before it goes on the road. This week Michael put a call into Big John @ Breakfast on South Yorkshire radio station Hallam FM to confirm that he would be opening the doors of his full show rehearsal at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena this Friday 28th June. Big John said “it’s not only brilliant that a megastar such as Michael Buble is in town rehearsing his show, but that we’re able to see the full spectacular show before anybody else!” Talking to Big John about the decision to perform this special show in this area, Michael said ‘There’s a lot of really kind, down to earth people in South Yorkshire. Every time I’ve done shows here it’s great because people are fun and don’t take themselves too seriously hopefully I’m a lot like them”. Local fans can purchase specially priced £25 tickets from 9am on Wednesday 26th June, with proceeds being split between Hallam FM and Bauer Radio’s local children’s charity ‘Cash for Kids’ a charity for local children and young people who are suffering from abuse, disability or simply need guidance and Sheffield’s Children’s hospital, one of only four dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK. For more information please visit www. hallamfm.co.uk/cashforkids and www.tchc. org.uk. Venue Manager Rob O’Shea is excited by the challenge of putting on sale and hosting a concert for 12,000 music fans all within what will be a very hectic 72 hour period. “This will be the first time in the buildings 22 year history that we have ever announced, put on sale and hosted a show within such a short space of time. The quick turnaround time will bring with it some challenges but when Michael Buble says he wants to put a show on in your venue you do everything you can to make it possible.” Marketing Manager Simon Bailey says “We have had to tweak the refurbishment start date as some of the works in the public areas were due to start after Sunday’s sell-out Rod Stewart concert, but will now see the seats start to be removed from the building and the toilet blocks being knocked down on Saturday, the day after the Buble concert. What a way to close the building with a special one off Michael Buble concert followed by the multimillion pound summer refurbishment and to then open in front of packed Arena for the Steelers v Nottingham ice hockey clash on the 8th September; these are definitely exciting times at the Arena”. This concert is a real once in a lifetime opportunity – a chance to see one of the World’s most successful artistes in a full show rehearsal ahead of a massive sell-out tour.
Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
Two businessmen in the centre of Town were sitting down for a break in their soon-to-be new shop... As yet, the shop wasn’t ready, with only a few shelves set up. One said to the other, “I bet any minute now some nosey pensioner is going to walk by, put their face to the window, and ask what we’re selling.” No sooner were the words out of his mouth when, sure enough, a curious old woman walked to the window, had a peek, and in a soft voice asked, “What are you selling here?” One of the men replied sarcastically, “We’re selling a***-holes.” Without skipping a beat, the old dear said, “Must be doing well... There’s only two left.” It was a hot Saturday evening in the summer of 1960, and Fred had a date with Peggy Sue. He arrived at her house and rang the bell. ‘Oh, come on in!’ Peggy Sue’s mother said as she welcomed Fred in. ‘So, what are you and Peggy planning to do tonight?’ she asked. ‘Oh, probably watch a film, and then maybe grab a bite to eat at the milk bar, maybe take a walk on the beach.’ ‘Peggy likes to screw, you know,’ Mum informed him. ‘Really?’ Fred replied; eyebrows raised. ‘Oh yes,’ mother continued, ‘When she goes out with her friends, that’s all they do!’ ‘Is that so?’ asked Fred, incredulous. ‘Yes,’ said the mother. ‘As a matter of fact, she’d screw all night if we let her!’ ‘Well, thanks for the tip!’ Fred said as he began thinking about alternate plans for the evening. A moment later, Peggy Sue came down the stairs looking pretty as a picture, wearing a pink blouse and a hoop skirt, and with her hair tied back in a bouncy ponytail. She greeted Fred. ‘Have fun, kids!’ mother said as they left. Half an hour later, a completely disheveled Peggy Sue burst into the house and slammed the front door behind her. ‘The Twist, Mum!’ she angrily yelled to her mother in the kitchen.‘The bloody dance is called the ...... Twist!’

DIAMOND CHAMPIONS HOME SAFETY http://www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/getinvolved/diamond-champions
http://www.esc.org.uk/public/safety-in-thehome/
Royal Voluntary Service is delighted to launch Diamond Champions to celebrate the work of older volunteers and the difference they make to the people they support. Their contribution to the lives of others often goes unrecognised and that’s why we are so pleased that Diamond Champions allows us to celebrate the hidden gems in our communities. Diamond Champion nominees must be 60 and over and the aim is to find volunteers who make a difference to their community by giving up their own time to help others. Sixty Diamond Champions will be identified from six regions (Scotland, Wales and four English regions) by a judging panel to receive a specially designed Diamond Champions pin and certificate signed by our Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall. Then 12 Diamond Champions will be selected by an independent panel of judges and invited to attend a reception at a prestigious venue later in the autumn. Nominate your Diamond Champion You can nominate your Diamond Champion online, or if you prefer, download our nomination form and send it to the RVS in one of the following ways: • By post to Diamond Champions, Royal Voluntary Service, Beck Court, Cardiff Gate Business Park, Cardiff, CF23 8RP • Email your nomination to diamondchampions@ royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk • Return it to a Royal Voluntary Service office, hospital shop or café. RVS must receive your nominations by 15 September 2013.
Every year in UK homes, about 70 people die and 350,000 are seriously injured from electrical accidents. Electrical fires account for almost half of accidental house fires - over 21,000 a year, and 2.5 million British adults say they have experienced an electric shock at home. Approximately nine out of ten (89%) electrical fires are caused by electrical products, mainly through their misuse. The Electrical Safety Council offers simple advice to help you to keep yourself, your loved ones and your homes safe from electrical accidents and fires. They have a range of leaflets that you can download, as well as a ‘calculator’ that helps you to check you are not overloading sockets. Their free smartphone app guides you through simple visual checks of the electrics in your home. You can also visit ESC’s Facebook page, at https://www.facebook.com/ ElectricalSafetyCouncil to test your knowledge in our ‘Blunder Hunt’ game. Electrical product recalls from 2007 to the present can be seen together with details of how to return at the website: http://www.esc.org.uk/ public/guides-and-advice/product-recalls/ Tips to help you stay safe Almost half of accidental fires in the home are caused by faulty or careless use of electrical appliances. Millions of people in the UK are exposing themselves to potential danger through easily avoided ‘blunders’. Follow these simple tips to help make your home safer: • Carry out a visual check of your electrics every six months - use our free smartphone app to check your home. • Use an RCD (Residual Current Device). An RCD is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire. It provides a level of protection that ordinary fuses or circuit breakers cannot. Find out more about RCD protection. • Don’t overload plug sockets • Regularly check for worn or frayed wires • Buy electrical chargers from a reputable source • Keep appliances clean and in good working order • Keep combustible materials away from sources of heat and make sure that the area around your electrical intake equipment (often found in understairs cupboards) is clear • Unplug your electric blanket before going to bed (unless it has a thermostat for safe all-night use) • Avoid using foreign appliances in UK sockets unless they have been converted for UK use - ESC recommend you replace the appliance with a UK standard electrical product if the plug is not suitable for conversion. • Ensure your home has a full periodic inspection and test from a registered electrician • Avoid using faulty or damaged electrical appliances, lighting and sockets. If you think there is a fault with your installation or appliance, stop using it immediately and ask a registered electrician for advice • Visit ESC’s Facebook page for more tips
URBAN CHALLENGE Urban Challenge is a new charity event being held in Sheffield on 7 July at Hillsborough Stadium and Hillsborough Park. Sportworks is fundraising for 8 charities i.e. St. Luke’s Hospice Sheffield, Weston Park Hospitals Charity, Sheffield Hospitals Charity etc. The initial idea of Urban Challenge comes from events such as the Tough Mudder and the Rat Race; however, we have built on this to produce a child/family friendly event that is more for fun than for competition. It encompasses both a 1km run and a 5km run, all with obstacles involved. Furthermore they are looking to build on the success and make this an annual event in several different areas. Urban Challenge is looking for enthusiastic volunteers in order to deliver this event. They would like to ask if you would like to as a Volunteer. More than 90% of social workers worry that life will become more difficult for older people who need social care as frontline cuts start to bite, according to an Age UK/ College of Social Work survey. Seven out of 10 social workers questioned said cuts in frontline services are leaving older people more isolated with a reduced quality of life, while 80% reported the spending cuts were resulting in families unable to cope with the additional strain of caring responsibilities. In the joint survey of more than 300 adult care social workers by Age UK and The College of Social Work, 94% said they have witnessed a squeeze on budgets for care services for older people over the last 3 years. And the cuts have not all been absorbed by efficiencies with 85% of respondents saying frontline services had been affected by the cuts. There was a wide consensus from social workers (81%) that they are seeing negative impacts of cuts in social care spending - for example, reporting seeing families unable to cope with caring responsibilities. Social workers also report seeing: • older people ending up in hospital more frequently (63%) • older people becoming more isolated (71%) • older people having a reduced quality of life (72%) Older people whose needs haven’t changed get less help now than 2010 Where local authorities have frozen or reduced spending on adult care services in the last 3 years, the vast majority of social workers who responded to the survey (93.5 %) said they now see older people who would have qualified for care 3 years ago now not receiving it, with 79% of respondents saying older people whose needs have not changed get less help now than they would have done in 2010. The survey also showed that Fair Access to Care Services criteria – in which older people’s care needs are assessed as low, moderate, substantial or critical – are being used by local authorities to reduce care spending with 1 in 5 respondents saying that they were under pressure to minimise levels of need of older people so putting them under the eligibility threshold. However, 26% of social workers also said that they now exaggerated older people’s disabilities to ensure that they qualified for local authority support. Over a third (36%) of respondents said the threshold for eligibility for state-funded care at the local authority where they work is now higher than it was 3 years ago. Investing in the most cost-effective model for delivering care Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director General of Age UK said: ‘This survey is yet more evidence that the social care system is failing increasing numbers of older people.’ ‘Only by ensuring sustainable and adequate funding for a system that covers all those with at least moderate care needs can the Government begin to fulfil its vision of making Britain the best place to grow old in Europe.’

If you think your affairs are likely to be complicated - through complex family relations, a large number of varied assets or some other potential difficulty – think carefully about the Executors you appoint. Earlier this year Russian oligarch and former Forbes Rich-Lister Boris Berezovsky was found dead in his ex-wife’s bathroom. Berezovsky lost a £3 billion court battle with Roman Abromavich last year and his estate is continuing to be sued (despite his demise) by Russian airline Aeroflot. Mr Berezovsky drew up a new will just 9 days before his death; however, the complexity of Mr Berezovsky’s financial affairs means that the administration of his estate could take many years. Furthermore, given the costly litigation that the estate has been (and continues to be) subject to, there may be little left in the estate. Mr Berezovsky’s
complex family situation – he had two ex-wives, at least six children and a number of mistresses – gives rise to the possibility of further claims against the estate. As a result none of the deceased’s five appointed executors wish to handle the estate, and its administration has now been passed to accountants Grant Thornton as court-appointed interim receivers – a costly move with the potential to drain any of Berezovsky’s remaining assets. Your choice of Executor is very important. Potential Executors should be aware of the complexities of the estate and happy to take on this role before you appoint them. If this causes difficulties you can always appoint the Partners at Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors as your Executors – we have over 20 years experience in the administration of estates, and this expertise will ensure the estate is handled properly. If you are concerned about your estate, or have any other enquiries regarding Wills and tax planning make an appointment with Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors Sheffield at 10 Kenwood Park Road Nether Edge for a free initial appointment on 0114 2290160. They deal with wills and probate; property issues; tax and elderly client advice. www. rwatchorn.co.uk

Hey, brides, tuck a sugar cube into your glove -according to Greek culture, the sugar will sweeten your union. The English believe a spider found in a wedding dress means good luck. Yikes!
In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the "best day" to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health. The groom carries the bride across the threshold to bravely protect her from evil spirits lurking below.

Food & Family
In Egypt, the bride’s family traditionally does all the cooking for a week after the wedding, so the couple can…relax.
The custom of tiered cakes emerged from a game where the bride and groom attempted to kiss over an ever-higher cake without knocking it over. Queen Victoria’s wedding cake weighed a whopping 300 pounds.
In South Africa, the parents of both bride and groom traditionally carried fire from their hearths to light a new fire in the newlyweds’ hearth.
Legend says single women will dream of their future husbands if they sleep with a slice of groom’s cake under their pillows.
The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome, where revelers broke a loaf of bread over a bride’s head for fertility’s sake.
An old wives’ tale: If the younger of two sisters marries first, the older sister must dance barefoot at the wedding or risk never landing a husband

PEAK CAVERN - THE EVENTS VENUE WITH A DIFFERENCE CLUBS &
A few months ago it came to my attention that my friend John Reilly and his band were paying a gig at Peak Cavern, also known as The Devil’s Arse. Unfortunately for me I could not get there however the subsequent reviews and pictures made me regret not going. The setting looked spectacular and I was told that the acoustics were superb. Peak Cavern is internationally known as a visitor attraction however I was unaware of the fact that it is becoming well known as an events venue. I decided to go and investigate and met with Jeremy Gosling. Having worked in venues all over
Europe, and performed in many of them, I was immediately struck with how the cavern lends itself to concerts and events and how it offers something completely different to the norm. The setting and scenery are spectacular and the cavern makes a wonderful, and very different, space well suited to being a performance venue. There have already been a number of very successful events there and there are more to come. The John Reilly Band will be back again on the 10th of August and Sheffield favourite The Gutterband will be providing plenty of party fun when they visit on August 24th.
Internationally known Matthew Barley, cellist, will be in the cavern as part of the Benjamin Britten Festival this Friday, the 28th and a full list of events can be seen at wwwpeakcavern.co.uk/category/ peak-cavern/events/. If you’re looking for a different place for a wedding reception Peak Cavern could well be the place to consider. At a recent wedding reception the disco was held in the ‘Great Cave’ which must have been wonderful and full bar facilities were provided in ‘Lumbago Walk’. Guests were then treated to fish and chips in the entrance to the cavern before they returned to the disco.
Corporate hospitality companies spend fortunes converting hotels and banqueting venues into something different however Peak Cavern is the real thing. As part of the celebration for Jack Daniel’s 70th birthday 500 competition winners were treated to a great night out there with live music being provided by The Vaccines, Mystery Jets and Tribes with a guest appearance by the Loveless Brothers (Drenge) who live just down the way from the cavern. Any company or band would do well to consider Peak Cavern as the venue of choice if they want to make an impression. Every year Sheffield plays host to the ‘Doc/Fest’. Doc/Fest is a Film Festival, Industry Session programme and Market place, offering pitching opportunities, controversial discussion panels and in-depth filmmaker masterclasses, as well as a wealth of inspirational
documentary films from across the globe and world-famous parties. This year 500 delegates were in for a treat as one of the films was shown to an audience of 500 in the cavern. This was a huge compliment to the venue and organisers Jeremy Gosling and John Harrison, as it showed that Peak Cavern has already achieved high level approval as a venue with a difference. In looking at the website I was also delighted to see forthcoming Christmas events starting on the 7th December featuring local brass bands and you can also treat yourself to a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. Visit Peak Cavern and have a look at the forthcoming events. With a little imagination it seems to me that just about anything is possible when you’re looking for somewhere spectacular and different to visit or be entertained.
INTERNAL CRIME CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
I’m always saddened to receive emails in the Club Historians inbox that are pleas for help from club members about dodgy dealings on the part of committee members. There is very little I can do unfortunately, as we are not officials but amateur historians. It’s beyond our brief to tell people what to do but I do respond to these messages and suggest they contact the local CIU branch, also to get members together if suspicions are shared. Club committees usually consist of well-intentioned, hard-working people, mostly volunteers who give their time to help the club, not to ruin it. Yet there have always been unscrupulous individuals who have seen club funds as easy targets. It might be a few quid here and there out of the till, or more substantial funds siphoned off, money that should be used to pay club bills and debts. It might be a one-off theft or longer term. In the past, the honesty of committee members was taken for granted. Unfortunately, a minority saw that as a weakness to exploit. This can lead to the bankrupting and closure of a club. There are enough pressures on clubs as it is without having criminals waiting to take advantage. Recently, the former secretary of the Daventry working men’s club admitted stealing £135,090 from his employers between January 1, 2010 and January 31, 2012. Y NOT FESTIVAL PIKEHALL, DERBYSHIRE 2-4/8/13
PREVIEW Words by KT Evans
Branding itself as ‘…small, fresh ,loud…’ if you have yet to experience the force of Derbyshire’s Y Not Festival, we strongly suggest you get involved within one of the finest independent live events this country has to offer. Forget lary crowds of standard festival beer guzzlers and replace these with an intimate group of dedicated gig supporters all gathered within an idyllic set up for one reason alone…the music. Housing over 100 bands across four live stages, headlining Friday 2nd August goes to Southern psychedelic / alternative rock brigade The Horrors. Bringing with them the true meaning behind experimentation into their hugely extensive back catalogue, The Horrors deliver passion and presence in abundance to every show they perform. The Virginmarys and Dutch Uncles will be joined by the Mystery Jets on the main Big Gin Stage however we strongly recommend you check out The Giant Squid Stage on the first day of action as our highlight of the day goes to Three Trapped Tigers. Having supported the likes of US hardcore clan Letlive alongside rock legends Deftones, London’s TTT bring to life versatile electro to succumb to a set which will no doubt perfectly soundtrack day 1 of Y Not Festival. Pulling it out of the bag for a cracking day of live music for Saturday 3rd August, Wakefield’s The Cribs are to headline the Big Gin Stage. Having been described by NME as ‘…the UK’s biggest cult band…’ if any band knows how to pull off a headlining show with as much energy as excitement and passion, the Jarman Brothers are certified winners. The Quarry Stage will see Deaf Havana grace the music hungry audience, alongside The 1975, this year’s most prosperous alternative rock group to emerge from the shackles of local music scene into national vision. The final day of Y Not is a hearty salute to glam rock, with The Darkness on Big Gin and Electric Six on Quarry Stage punching their way into headliner spots. We’ll forgive you for only knowing the one Electric Six Song ‘Gay Bar,’ although with a catalogue of catchy as hell hits, we urge you to pack a pair of platforms and get on down to one of the most memorable shows you will see in a very long time. Guaranteed. Sheffield’s Wet Nuns are to grace The Giant Squid Stage along with alternative rock quartet We Are the Ocean. One of the back bone bands of the British rock scene, We Are The Ocean have toured relentlessly this year to create a one-off, belting live show. However, our pick of Sunday goes to Dry The River on the Quarry Stage…effortless and emotional, Dry the River capture the moment within each and every hit…a perfect way to conclude a spot-on festival.
round-up by stuart renton
Sad news: calorie-charged cake company, Fancie, has gone into voluntary redundancy and closed most of its branches this week. This is worthy of mention as, one, it’s cake (and who doesn’t love the cake), and two, this is a prime example of a company enjoying enormous success, only to make one poor business decision and for everything to come crashing down around them like the way a Vanilla Slice goes down at an all-girl nightclub. Fancie’s directors stated that it was the Meadowhall branch that caused the financial woes, which just goes to show that the only people making any real money from shopping centres is the owners. It’ll go the same way with the new market on the Moor. The owners are trying to tie businesses into a whopping four year contract and with prices skyrocketing, very few small businesses can afford to commit to that kind of contract. It only takes a poor couple of months for everything to go boobs up faster than Anthea Turner on Dancing on Ice. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel (and it’s mostly a light Victoria Sponge with a buttercream icing) because, while Fancie may be on the ropes, there is an alternative. I’ve always wanted to do a section on Places You Should Visit but Don’t Know About, so, in that vein, if you’re looking for a cake fix, then Steel City Cakes, at 434-436 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield is the place to visit. They offer the most amazing selection of home-made cakes, cup-cakes and assorted delicacies, and the best part is you can get a huge slice of cake and a pot of tea for three quid. That’s right, three quid. It’s a total bargain. Drop into Steel City Cakes and show your love for the food that’s so delicious, it’s practically calorie free (probably). Or you can call them on 0114 258 5819. I should point out that no free cake was given to the author for writing this article; I did it out of the love that’s literally overflowing from my heart. Next week I’ll be promoting world peace and curing cancer. Pointless reality show, Dancing on Ice, might have been cancelled, but the whispers are that the show might return without Torvill and Dean in the lead roles. Get rid I say. They’ve been dragging the show down for years with their positive attitude reserved for preppy teen girls and their painful gurning through every performance. Controversial, I know, but they’re long past their best and frankly, they’re both one facelift away from being Tupperware. If the producers want the drag the show out of ratings oblivion, they really need to hook some A- Listers. Pamela Anderson was a real crowd puller (in that she has - allegedly - pulled a few crowds in her time), and allowing Pammy to go out in the first week was just crazy – think of all the dads who turned off when the blonde bombshell
2013
If you don’t know at least one Limp Bizkit hit, whether it be one of their most prolific numbers to a belting album track…where have you been the last 20 odd years? One of the most infamous hardcore rappers to emerge out of the international music scene(think a screaming version of Eminem and you’re just about on the right lines) Fred Durst plus beard was on top form as he graced a 40,000 strong audience at this year’s Download Festival 2013. We’re going to throw it out there…’Limp Bizkit, the institution.’ Hell everybody knows ‘My Generation,’ (and you’re even cooler if you know the dance routine…we do…) or ‘Rollin,’ a staple hit to grace rock venues and alternative nightclubs around the globe. For without Limo Bizkit, people would be blind to the fact that ‘nookie’ also rimes with ‘cookie,’ and the famous ‘My Way Or The Highway’ saying would yet to have been coined. We have a lot to thank Limp Bizkit for…hence why their closing show on the Zippo Stage at Download Fest was easily the most celebrated and talked about performance of the entire weekend. Opening up with belter ‘Rollin,’ the crowd were instantly thrust into a frenzy of floor vibrating baselines alongside stupendous dance moves only acceptable when Fred Durst says so. Speaking of which, who would have thought a white baggy track suit, red baseball cap and hairy black beard would look so freaking cool. Proceeding this, ‘Nookie’ and ‘Hot Dog’ followed, alongside a killer version of Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Killing In The Name Of,’ (que hardcore metal unison head banging, the standard nod of acknowledgement at any rock concert…think nodding in approval) Although a somewhat risky move to cover a track so infamous within its own right, Limp Bizkit tore apart the theory and belted out a track only possible to be described in one word…awesome. ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ and ‘Take A Look Around’ followed closing the set with the fiercest track on their back catalogue; ‘Break Stuff.’ We can’t count how many times we’ve angrily chanted out the chorus to this hit…on our own…in our bedroom (that’s normal right?) however with the strength and force delivered by Mr Durst, we should probably practice our vocal technique before we can challenge the master himself. Although an encore would have been nice, we’ll forgive the group who not only performed the best show we’ve ever seen at Download, but one which will remain with us for absolutely yonks. (Not to self, buy a white track suit)

went home. That was a major mistake from the judges, who were being holier than thou morons trying to passive aggressively prove some kind of point - which was basically that they’re taking their crap out on the contestants ‘cos they’re no longer famous or at the top of their game… Sour grapes, much? While I pause for breath between rants, I have to ask a question: how stupid are the people involved with Big Brother? Every week they talk about putting someone up for nomination when they really mean eviction. It’s not complicated like rocket science or getting “jiggy” with a really fat bird (which takes some serious work in trying to work out the logistics of making that particular magic happen) but they’ve been getting it wrong for years and it’s really very annoying. The housemates nominate someone for eviction, and then, once they’re up and the public are voting, you don’t mention the nominate word again; it’s all about the evictions from that point forward. Clear now? Good. And lastly this week, did you watch The Man with the 10 Stone Testicles that aired on Monday evening? Seriously, this is like Embarrassing Bodies multiplied by a thousand. It’s the grossest possible television rivalled only in its freak show qualities by The Voice. For the record: I do not want to see testicles on television (and that includes John Barrowman) and I certainly don’t want to see outrageously deformed mutant super testicles (no matter how cool that sounds in principle). I don’t quite understand when we became a nation of freak lovers; when we started to take pleasure in seeing the grotesque or the hideous behaviour of certain individuals. Mind you I suppose if we didn’t take some kind of gruesome pleasure in the freaks of society then Chris Moyles and Stacey Solomon would have been out of work a long time ago… More rants next week.

Now that summer has officially arrived, as well as ensuring you and your family enjoy the warm weather and sun safely, pet owners need to spare a thought for the health and well-being of their four-legged friends too. Pets can’t tell us when they’re too hot or uncomfortable in their fur coats, so it’s up to owners to ensure they remain happy and healthy in the heat. Leading veterinary charity, PDSA, has some handy hints to help you keep them safe throughout the summer months: 1. Never leave pets in cars, conservatories or caravans even if you think you only be gone for a little while. Even on a cloudy day with the windows open, the temperature can soar dangerously high in just a few minutes, which can cause fatal heatstroke. You may also be delayed, meaning your pet could become dangerously overheated. 2. Try not to exercise pets during the hottest hours of the day, instead go out early in the morning or in the evening. Keep strenuous exercise to a minimum and give them access to cool, indoor areas. 3. Fly strike is a particular problem for rabbits in the summer. Rabbits need to be checked underneath for at least twice a day for fly eggs and their underneath should be kept clean by wiping with a clean damp cloth. 4. If your pet gets too hot, wrap them in a cool damp towel/cloth, change it regularly and contact your vet as soon as you can. The signs of heat stroke start with excessive panting and can progress to fatal collapse. 5. Make sure that fresh, clean water is always available – check bowls or bottles at least once a day. Provide a spare bowl or bottle too, just in case one of them is spilt or blocked when you are out. 6. If your pet lives outdoors in an enclosure or a hutch, make sure there are always shaded areas they can sit in. (Remember, the sun moves position throughout the day going from east to west.) Make sure your budgie cages are is kept well away from the window and not in direct sunlight. 7. Giving your pet’s fur a trim is a good idea at the start of summer. This will keep them much cooler. 8. Special pet sun creams can be used on areas of white fur or those with only a thin covering of hair. This will help to protect vulnerable areas of skin, such as the nose and, particularly for cats, the tips of the ears. Pet sun creams are available from all good pet stores.

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS
angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
Back to reality this week, no drama, no ranting! I’m an angler who takes all but the kitchen sink when fishing ‘...just in case’, so it was a delight this week to slim down the kit for a return to the river..... The Earl of Harrington’s AC run several superb stretches of the River Derwent, and despite joining last year, I’ve only had chance to try a couple, so I was off in search of pastures new. Many anglers are put off by a lack of car parking, access or otherwise, but if you don’t fish the rivers, then in my opinion, you are missing out.... The EofHAC have the lease on some superb city centre stretches in places such as the back of Derby County Football Club ground where you can park riverside, and the same can be said for swims further downstream which makes getting on the bank a relatively simple task! I decided to try an hour at the rear of the football ground in an area of long slow deeps where I knew barbel to 14lbs 5ozs had been out on opening day. Setting up with meat and pellet, I had no indications that the barbel were inclined to feed in what were less than ideal conditions, so I moved on. The weir on any river is a focal point; a place of highly oxygenated flow, attractive to look at, full of food sources and offering lots of options, so I was extremely pleased to find myself sitting back at Darley Weir just outside Derby. A large island creates two clearly defined flows which converge at the tail of the weirpool to produce a regular fish holding spot and it was here I chose to sit for a few hours in the sunshine... Barbel were the primary target, so again a rod with a halibut pellet was cast out towards the edge of the main flow, and a large lump of ‘krilled’ meat was launched to the ‘inner crease’. I flavour my luncheon meat the night before by roughly chopping and adding Marukyu Krill Powder before chilling overnight in the fridge; it really adds a ‘kick’ and has produced good results. Within thirty minutes, I’d lost a good sized chub on the pellet rod, but the weather conditions were not conducive to catching barbel, so the maggot feeder was my next tactic....just to see what else was in there! As soon as the feeder hit the river bed and settled, I was getting constant movement on the ‘tip; fast bites offered a clue that bleak or dace may be present, but the first fish I connected with was a mighty minnow! After a run of these, I picked a couple of grayling too which are one of my favourite fish, so I was very happy with a few hours work in very pleasant surroundings. If you haven’t fished a river before, I’d suggest that the Earl of Harrington offer an excellent place to start. www.theearlofharringtonsac.co.uk for details, but tickets are just £27.50 per year!

GOLF
by Timelord
This weekend’s Channel 4 coverage comes from Newcastle and Newmarket with seven races scheduled to be shown from 2.05 to 3.50. The feature race from Newcastle is the John Smith’s Northumberland Plate, a Heritage Handicap over two miles and 19 yards. At Newmarket there are two Listed races and a Group 3 race. Newcastle: 2.05 Betfred Chipchase Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 6f: Jack Dexter ran well in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at the Royal meeting last week, showing that he is in good heart at present and merits the first choice in this somewhat lesser contest. The ones that look to me to be likely to give him most to do are: Mirza; Move in Time; Smoothtalkinrascal; and Intibah. 2.40 Betfred “Watch Fred’s Pushes on Betfred TV” Handicap, 3yo+, 0-100, 6f: David O’Meara’s Dick Bos gets a quite confident shout to land this after putting up a fine performance when second to Harrison George at Nottingham last week. The dangers look to be headed by: Compton; Spinatrix; Lucky Numbers; Chester Aristocrat; and Mehdi. 3.15 John Smith’s Northumberland Plate, Heritage Handicap, 3yo+, 2m 19yards: Kevin Bishop’s Kazlian hasn’t run on the flat for over two years but recorded good time figures when last doing so in France. He looks to me to have all the hallmarks of possible surprise package after running quite creditably over timber and could be dangerous to overlook with capable apprentice Brendan Powell taking off a handy 3lbs . However one that looks to have further progress in him with this extra distance is Amanda Perrett’s Arch Villain who is seeking a fourtimer here. With the stable going well and the extra two furlongs looking sure to help the selection should take all the beating. Others that catch the eye in a very competitive event are: Cousin Khee; Moidore; Albert Bridge; Sun Central; Porgy; Watts Up Son; Biographer; and Scatter Dice. 3.50 Betfred “Still Treble Odds on Lucky’s” Handicap, 3yo+, 0-105, 7f: My shortlist for this comprises: Compton; Diescentric; Tartiflette; Webbow; Masteroftherolls; Les Troyens; Mehdi; and Santefisio. With a last time out success under his belt the nod goes to Julie Camacho’s Diescentric with the reserve order being: Compton; Tartiflette; Webbow; and Masteroftherolls. Newmarket: 2.20 Bet365 Empress Stakes, Listed, 2yo Fillies, 6f; If Olly Stevens’ Hoku makes the line-up she is the fairly hopeful selection after running well when second to Beldale Memory at York, even though that one did let the form down at Royal Ascot last week. The dangers are plenty however with Ventura Mist, Rough Courte, Majeyda, Disko and Fig Roll looking to be at the top of the list. The reserve pecking order is: Rough Courte; Majeyda; Ventura Mist; Disko; and Fig Roll. 2.55 Bet365.com Fred Archer Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m 4f: On past performances the classiest animal in this line-up would have to be Treasure Beach who has two wins at the highest level in his CV. Now trained by Mike de Kock this globe-trotting son of Galileo ought to be still good enough to account for these rivals, the chief of whom could be John Gosden’s Group 2 winner Aiken. Others to catch the eye are: Barbican; I’m Your Man; Mijhaar; and Cameron Highland. 3.30 Bet365 Criterion Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 7f: I found this race quite difficult to decode with a few of the form figures perhaps not quite showing the merit of recent performances. My best last time out figures come from (in descending order): Libranno; Lockwood; Ultrasonic; Masteroftherolls; Leitir Mor; Instance; and The Taj. The lifetime best figure is accorded to Godolphin’s Lockwood, followed by Red Jazz. In a coin toss I am going for Lockwood who gets healthy 8lbs from Libranno, who is possibly the chief danger to the selection. The reserve order after these two is: Ultrasonic; Masteroftherolls; Leitir Mor; and Instance.

NEW COURSE RECORD AT WATH GOLF CLUB A long established ‘course record’ was recently broken at Wath Golf Club. The attached photograph shows Neil Windle (on right, Wath Golf Club Captain 2013) with Richard Jones on the second green on the golf course, which is situated between Rotherham and Barnsley and was established in 1904. Richard has just set a new course record for Wath Golf Club. Playing in the Sunday Medal his score of 63 beat the previous record of 64, which was set in 2002. Club Captain Neil Windle, who regularly plays with Richard, congratulated him on his fantastic achievement. Richard, aged 41, has been a member of Wath Club since he was a boy and has represented the Club at every level. Rotherham United can confirm the double signing of Danny Hylton and Robert Milsom. The formalities on both deals were completed at club headquarters this morning with Hylton penning a two-year deal, whilst Milsom signs a six-month contract. Hylton, a versatile front and wide man, made over 200 appearances for his only club Aldershot Town and also netted a hat-trick for the Shots against Steve Evans’ side in an FA Cup game in January this year. Milsom, another versatile performer who can operate in defence and midfield, has spent the last two years playing for SPL side Aberdeen, after starting his career with Fulham.
