FAMILY TRIATHLON FOR CHARITY INSPIRED BY 2012 OLYMPICS It’s on your marks, get set for the Dyson Family from Sale, Greater Manchester, who will be taking part in a family triathlon this summer in the hope of raising money for The Sick Children’s Trust, a charity that supported them when their son William was seriously ill in hospital. Six years ago the Dyson family were visiting William’s grandparents, when William only 11 months old at the time, suddenly became very ill suffering from an extremely high temperature and convulsions. William was diagnosed with Pneumococcal Meningitis. Rotherham hospital was unable to treat his condition, so William was transported to intensive care at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Chris and Debbie were able to stay close by to William for the three weeks he was in intensive care because they were offered a room in Treetop House, a ‘Home from Home’ provided by the charity. Chris said ‘Being able to stay in Treetop House was invaluable to Debbie and I; we could always be close by to William and were never more than a five minute walk away from his ward. As well as being close to the hospital, the house was really comfortable and homely which we really appreciated. It was also helpful to have other families in the house that were going through similar experiences.’ ‘William is now a fit and healthy seven year old and we would really like to fundraise for the charity that offered us such amazing support when we needed them. As we stayed in the Sheffield house, we would like to donate the money we raise to the charity’s Sheffield Branching Out Appeal.’ William enjoyed the London Olympics so much that the family have decided to take part in a family triathlon. The Sick Children’s Trust provides eight ‘Homes from Home’ across the country at six major children’s hospitals. The Sheffield Branching Out Appeal is a project to build a second ‘Home from Home’ at Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital. It will consist of 11 bedrooms and will enable The Sick Children’s Trust to support an additional 300 families a year. To complete the project the charity needs to raise just over £225,000. Ann Wyatt, House Manager of Treetop House added ‘It is lovely to see families organise such unique and fun ways of fundraising for us.’ If you would like to donate to the Dyson Family Tri-Athlon then visit their just giving page: http:// www.justgiving.com/thedysons

Copley’s Column When you read this I shall be enjoying a well-earned holiday on Majorca, catching up with old friends and doing the rounds of my favourite watering holes, where many artists who are well-known locally will be performing, and I have to say that I am happy to be away from the madness epitomised by certain things happening in this country. My first rant is about the amount of foreign aid donated by this country, at a time when we are all having to tighten our belts. Other countries such as the United States of America, Italy and Japan have wisely decided to reduce their contribution and focus on helping their own countrymen. Our contribution last year was a staggering £8.55 billion and the total this year to over eleven and a half billion and will exceed twelve billion next year all at a time when we are struggling on the home front. Secondly, the British system of justice is revered throughout the world but recent events have done little to enhance our reputation. Once again the Metropolitan police force is under scrutiny over the long-running Stephen Lawrence saga. Moaning done, I am happy to remind readers that the wonderful Birksfest takes place on Sunday 7th July to benefit children’s charity Fairplay, at Westfield House, Westfield Lane, Middle Handley S21 5RY, opposite the Devonshire Arms. This popular event, organised by Andy Birks and held in the grounds of his dad, Tony’s, fabulous home runs between 1.00 p.m. and 9 p.m. and is a day of superb entertainment, not to be missed. Also on that date, the 2013 Shiny Bike Show takes place at the Hub Café from noon until 5.00 p.m. All bikers are invited to display their pride and joy and there is a fun fair, licensed bar, music, hot and cold food, trade stands and merchandise.
MICHAEL BUBLE BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE
Michael Buble performed a full dress rehearsal to a sold out Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Friday. Literally bringing the house down ahead of the building’s closure for a multi-million pound refurbishment over the summer. Sheffield fans got an exclusive show preview ahead of his sell tour of London, Dublin and North America and if his dress rehearsal was anything to go by then what a treat they are all in for. The ultimate showman performed a flawless 2 hour set in front of a capacity crowd at Motorpoint Arena with all the show proceeds going to local charities Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids and Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital. General Manager Rob O’Shea said: “This has been an amazing week, firstly we got the news that Michael Buble wanted to perform his dress rehearsal in front of a live audience, then the show sold out as soon as it was put on sale and this was followed by an amazing performance that I am sure that those who were lucky enough to get tickets will never forget. Then as soon as the last customer was out of the venue work began on the refurbishment. Just another long but incredibly rewarding week in the life of the Arena.” Steve Brailey, chief executive of SIV, said: “There has been a real buzz around the City following the surprise announcement that not only was Michael Buble rehearsing in Sheffield but was also going to put on a show and donate all the proceeds to two local charities. To have such a global star in the City and talking positively about his experiences of the venue, the area and its people is something we are all very proud of. The profile that these shows that play the Arena week in and week out bring are exactly why we are investing in the building’s infrastructure to ensure we continue to provide a quality customer experience and a profitable venue.”

MORE THAN JUST A MUSIC FESTIVAL Thought music festivals were just about the music? Think again! Tramlines is teaming up with Nando's to bring festival goers the weird and wonderful - including Grannies on motorised trolleys, wrestling, arcade games, science experiments, a singing nun, a goth cruise, sword dancing, and The Stone Roses like you’ve never seen them before. On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July Millennium Galleries’ Knife and Folk Gallery will be showcasing amazing and unseen images of the Stone Roses taken during their rise to fame. Capturing the early years of Madchester, these images offer an intimate glimpse of an iconic band. Singing Nun, Musical Ruth and The Amazing Magical Mobile Piano will be popping up several times across the festival, while Granny Tourismo are back at Tramlines for a second year running. The world’s first and only shopping trolley dance display team will be around Barker’s Pool on Saturday. These six outrageous grannies whizz around on their trollies putting on a show that has to been seen to be believed. On both Saturday and Sunday the whole family can get involved with Sheffield University’s Dream Bigger Dreams at Millennium Square. Here kids (and adults) can learn about science and medicine in a fun, interactive environment – just wait until you see what a Mento does in a bottle of Cola. Lycra-clad men will be wrestling each other in a series of edge-of-your-seat battles at the Library Theatre on Sunday 21 July. A great chance to watch this theatrical sport for free, so don’t miss out. Also on Sunday The Washington will be showing the awesome and unusual documentary 'Goth Cruise'. Documenting the fourth Annual Goth Cruise, where 150 Goths sail the seas of the Caribbean. Sarah Nulty, Tramlines Festival Director said: “Barker’s Pool will be the hub for this year’s street theatre. Barci the Nando’s chicken and the Coq au Van will be at Tramlines all weekend with Out There! moments across the festival. “I’ve seen Granny Turismo at Glastonbury before and they are lots of fun and definitely not to be missed. Although our main focus music, it is really exciting to have something different to add to the festival.” Tramlines, the UK’s biggest inner city festival, returns for a fifth year on Friday 19 July, and runs until Sunday 21 July, with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. Already confirmed are Lianne La Havas, Toddla T Sound, David Rodigan MBE, The Selecter, Tensnake, B. Traits, Theo Parrish, New Young Pony Club, Shangaan Electro, Fenech Soler, Slow Club, Jim Jones Revue, The Invisible, 2.54, Friends, Rolo Tomassi and Dutch Uncles. Over 60 of Sheffield’s music venues and performance spaces will be pulling out the stops staging hundreds of artists across the city. Devonshire Green's Main Stage and the new and improved Stage 2 will be home to some of the most exciting artists around. There'll be an expanded dance music programme and the welcome return of the Folk Forest, the Peace Gardens' World Stage, the Buskers Bus, the Weston Park party and the Blues and Ale Trail. All this for only £6 a day! Free family entertainment will still be on offer around the city and most of the city's pubs will be putting on a show that can also be enjoyed for free. Day tickets to the festival cost just £6 plus booking fee and can be purchased from http://2013.tramlines. org.uk/tickets/ under 5s go free. Wrist bands are needed for the main stages and music venues you would usually pay to enter (Leadmill, Harley, DQ, Plug, O2 and so on) The wristband will also get you priority entry into free venues operating in the city centre. So it turns out that Elvis didn’t like the amount of time and money spent into the protection of rare and exotic animals. He preferred a little less conservation. I’ve been trying to buy a train ticket online for over an hour now and I’m getting p***ed off. It keeps asking me, ‘Where do you want to go?’ So I click on the icon that says ‘Home’ and then it makes me start again. I’m pretty sure I can throw a pound coin further than it would get me on a bus these days. Silence is golden, unless you have kids. Then it’s just suspicious. After my prostate exam, the doctor left. Then the nurse came. At that point, she whispered the 5 words no man wants to hear: “Who the hell was that?” My son keeps taking his clothes off at sporting events and running on the field. I am going to start putting windolene in his food. That should stop him streaking. If you live by the sword, you die by the sword. Especially if you’re prone to rolling over in your sleep.

DISCOVER THE INTERNATIONAL PEACE GARDENS AT TRAMLINES Returning to Tramlines Festival 2013 for its fifth year on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July is the ever popular Peace Gardens Stage. The stage is located in the International Peace Gardens area of the festival, a new expanded area for 2013 sponsored by Sheffield University, situated in its regular city centre spot near the Town Hall. The outdoor stage has programmed a fantastic array of international, national and Steel City talent. On Saturday the Peace Gardens becomes the World Music Stage. Papa Al has dug deep into the global music scene to pull out music from DR Congo, Ghana, South African, Jamaica, and Angola, combined with Sheffield’s finest hip hop acts, a splash of brass, and the introduction of local young bands. Saturday highlights include headliner, Bristol’s finest Mankala Band - think pan-African with a splash of Latin. Supporting is Jungle Lion serving up riotous ska, plus K.O.G & The Allstar Revolution, playing what can only be described as ‘Afroskank’. Sunday sees the World Stage become the Youth & Community Stage, sponsored by Sheffield College. Presented by Musical Works and Under the Stars, Sunday leans to local Youth and Community talent, celebrating music development work happening across the city with a snapshot of the diversity and quality of emerging musicians. It features the Stars Band whose recent album launch at Sheffield’s Leadmill, supported by Heaven 17’s Martyn Ware on the decks, was a huge success and attended by many. The Sunday finale is set to shake up Sheffield’s city centre with the 184 bpm South African Shangaan Electro dancers and music. This year, Fearless, a service empowering young people to stand up to crime safely, have sponsored the Dope and Mean Breakdance competition. The competition will have heats throughout the day with the finals and semi-finals taking place on the World & Community Stage on Sunday at 5.45pm. The standards will be very high and spectators are guaranteed to see breath-taking moves and incredible skills Created in conjunction with Sheffield City Council and ‘No More Wasted Lives’, Fearless is a newly launched project that encourages young people to provide potentially crime-stopping information with the security of complete anonymity. Tramlines, the UK’s biggest inner city festival, officially kicks off on Friday 19 July, and runs until Sunday 21 July, with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. KINSHIP CARERS RELATE CALLS FOR Helen Jackson, Management Team, Sheffield 50+
As our members are well aware, they are the ones who step in to raise a child when their parents are unable to? Most of the time it’s actually other family membersgrandparents, older brothers and sisters, aunts or uncles, known as kinship carers. Children do much better with their wider family than if they’d gone into the care system, but these families face a lot of difficulties coping with the emotional and financial strain of raising children in difficult circumstances. Many kinship families have no access to support from their local authority despite the children they are raising having significant emotional or behavioural needs. They have been through traumatic events including parental abuse or neglect, alcohol or substance misuse, domestic violence, imprisonment and the loss of a parent through bereavement. As you may know I’m a trustee of Grandparents Plus, a tiny charity with a massive task helping these 200,000 grandparents and family carers.(we feel the number is actually the tip of a bigger iceberg!) Grandparents Plus provides a peer support Network, vital advice and information and campaigns for change to get kinship carers and the children they care for a better deal. Their new Keep Families Together campaign starts this month, with several kinship carers travelling to Westminster for a special Parliamentary summit. I’m asking you join them in spirit and take action by: 1. Letting us or grandparents plus know if you are yourself a ‘kinship career’, or you know of someone who is. 2. Watch the campaign video: http:// www.grandparentsplus.org.uk/keepfamilies-together-2013 3. Possibly making a small donation to help their work A donation to Grandparents Plus would mean the following: £10 would help us promote our Advice Service to reach more carers who would otherwise miss out on our help, paying for 50 advice and information leaflets £25 could help to sort out the complex problems of a kinship carer, with an hour’s phone conversation with an Advice worker. This could mean accessing their full benefits entitlement that can make a huge difference to their family’s wellbeing or getting the right legal help. £50 could help pay for 2 kinship carers to get the practical family advice they need by attending a support workshop which would include sessions on anger management, managing attachment issues, and addressing financial and legal problems Grandparents Plus is a really small charity that makes a big impact. Every new supporter makes a huge difference to what they can achieve for these families. Thank you. MINISTER FOR AGEING SOCIETY AS FOUR MILLION PEOPLE FACE A LONELY OLD AGE
ALL THE BEST ALAN
ISSUE
1012 03/07/13
PC Alan Hancock who worked with Sheffield 50+ on numerous intergeneration projects over the years has retired.
http://www.relate.org.uk/press/72/index.html
Relate, the UK’s leading relationship support organisation, has published a report with New Philanthropy Capital, which calls for a Minister for Ageing Society. The report, Who will love me when I’m 64? examines the importance of good quality relationships in later life, but finds that not enough is being done to support older people to strengthen their relationships. Research conducted earlier this year by Relate and Ipsos MORI found that while 83% of over 50s believe relationships are the most important thing for a happy retirement, 1 in 5, or almost 4 million older people lacks the confidence to form new friendships and relationships. Who will love me when I’m 64? finds that there is currently no coherent government strategy for coping with our increasingly ageing population, but that with the right support, relationships can play a key role in preventing many of the negative issues and realising some of the benefits that come with later life. As well as calling for a Minister for Ageing Society, the report also recommends: • A new and comprehensive government strategy on ageing, which will work across government departments • Better support for older carers to enable them to care for their partners at home if they wish, and to maintain a healthy relationship • The measurement of older people’s relationships as part of the work of Directors of Public Health • Embedding relationship support in the local service landscape so that older people are offered support early existing touch points within public services. • An innovation fund to target resources for local innovations that look to develop and strengthen existing relationships for older people • Older people themselves should recognise the importance of building and maintaining a robust network of good quality relationships. Relate’s Chief Executive, Ruth Sutherland said, “What this report shows us is that there are three pillars to a good later life – health, financial security and good personal relationships, and yet relationships are largely missing from the wider debate around our ageing society. We know from this report that good relationships have a direct impact on health and wellbeing, and that loneliness and isolation have negative impacts on both our health and wider society more generally. With 1 in 5 older people lacking the confidence to form new friendships and relationships, we are looking at a future in which 4 million people could be facing loneliness and isolation. Without a Minister of State for Ageing Society, we will not see a coherent strategy which ensures that we don’t drift into an old age that we don’t want.” Dan Corry, Chief Executive of NPC said, “We must see our ageing society as an opportunity rather than a drain on the public purse, but that means we need people to be supported to build and maintain a healthy network of relationships.” Will you still love me when I’m 64?is launched four months into Relate’s campaign on the importance of relationships in later life. Relate has partnered with Gransnet, the online community for grandparents, with Ipsos MORI to survey more than 1,000 older people on their views of later life, and with NPC to publish this report. Resources, information and a relationship checker can be found on Relate’s dedicated site for older people, www. retirementtogether.org.uk
Alan Hancock receiving an award from the Burngreave and Pitsmoor Community
Some of the projects he worked with us include a trip to the Houses of Parliament, Caught in the Act, How Safe is Sheffield and many more. We wish Alan a very happy and fulfilling retirement. Patrick Meleady who works in communities across Sheffield said “It is really sad to hear of PC Alan Hancock retiring and he will be sadly be missed Alan has worked tirelessly over the years in schools and on hundreds of community projects to educate children, young people and families on the dangers and consequences of becoming engaged in crime and criminality, this has helped to make Sheffield one of the safest largest cities in our country. Alan, has been a source of strength for individuals and communities and he has continually demonstrated selfless acts of kindness, it is no coincidence that Sheffield is such a vibrant safe place when we have committed officers such as Alan persuading all manners of people to choose the right path.

with Rosalind Watchorn
Although everyone bangs on about the importance of making a will - sometimes when circumstances have changed a will made years ago is the last thing a family want to have. Mary had made her will many years ago. One which left everything to her husband Arthur and then their two children David and Kay. If David or Kay died their share was left to their spouses. Unfortunately by the time I met the family things had moved on. Arthur had passed away some years ago and Kay had suffered a serious accident and died. Kay’s husband was estranged from her and their children; he had already taken all the joint property he held with Kay. The family were desperate
to ensure Kay’s children would benefit from their grandma’s will when she died. We looked at the options. The children were grown up and working and would not be able to make a claim against Mary’s estate when she died - they were not dependents. Mary did not have the mental capacity to make a new will. The solution was to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Statutory Will to be drawn up. It needs to be done while Mary is still living and can be quite a long winded process. The official solicitor is appointed to make sure that Mary’s interests are taken into account and everyone who is affected by a new will - including the son in law who may lose his inheritance - has an opportunity to say their piece. Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors are at 10 Kenwood Park Road Nether Edge. Tel 0114 2290160. They deal with wills and probate; property issues; tax and elderly client advice. www.rwatchorn.co.uk

OWLS IN THE PARK - THOUSANDS FLOCK TO FUN DAY
Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank the thousands of fans who helped make Owls in the Park even bigger and better than last year. An estimated 15,000 supporters flocked to Hillsborough Park on Sunday exceeding the 12,000 who attended in 2012. Crowds queued to be amongst the first to purchase the new 2013/14 away shirt before getting them signed and posing for photos with Dave Jones’ and the Owls stars. The free event, in association with Dennis Hobson Promotions, featured an array of activities throughout the day including a live music stage showcasing up and coming bands, a huge screen displaying season highlights and a family funfair. New additions this year were Yorkshire’s biggest fun dog show hosted by Support Dogs, a towering climbing wall, exotic animals from The Butterfly House and the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind who gave visitors the chance to try out Goalball. The SWFC community programme's inflatable pitch, face painting, penalty shootouts and multi sports activities also went down a treat with young Owls on the day. Mascots Ozzie and Barney greeted youngsters and with the addition of real-life Owls available for photo opportunities, it certainly made for a fun-filled day! Chairman Milan Mandaric met many of the fans and was delighted with the turnout. He said: “Last year’s event was special but this year was just incredible; to see so many Sheffield Wednesday families all together was so good for everyone at the club.” “Everyone who was in Hillsborough Park between 11.00am and 6.00pm on Sunday saw exactly what this club is all about.” Sheffield Wednesday would, once again, like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended.

PUBS RAISE OVER £100 MILLION FOR CHARITY LAST YEAR GLASTONBURY, NOT JUST A
CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, in association with PubAid, has this week launched ‘Pubs & Charity’ month and announced new research that shows British pubs raised more than £106 million in the last year for different charities. This is an average of £2,742 per pub. In a study conducted by CGA on behalf of CAMRA and PubAid, results showed that 85% of pubs were actively raising money for charity and despite tough economic times, funds raised annually by pubs had increased by nearly 5% since 2010. CAMRA’s ‘Pubs & Charity’ campaign encourages pubs to organise charity events throughout
July and promote the amazing work they do to the media and their communities. Pubs sometimes get unfairly blamed for anti-social behaviour in villages, towns and cities and this campaign aims to help raise the profile of the British pub. In a separate independent survey commissioned for CAMRA and PubAid by TNS, research showed that more people would use their local pubs if more charity events were organised. 21% of all adults agreed with this statement but it was an amazing 32% of young adults aged 18-24 who said they would use their local more regularly if more events supported charities.
CAMRA has issued around 7,000 free promotional packs to pubs to help them advertise what they have planned for July. This campaign will not only benefit charities but also encourage more people to support their community pubs, which is important at a time when 26 pubs are closing every week. Mike Benner, CAMRA’s Chief Executive said, “CAMRA and PubAid feel it is time British pubs got the recognition for the amazing funds they raise for numerous charities across Britain. Pubs can get unfairly blamed for a lot of anti-social behaviour but often the alcohol that has led to these problems has not been drunk in pubs.”
Benner concluded, “The pub industry has been struggling in these tough economic times but our new research shows all parties win if pubs run charity events. The charities get important funds, pubs get busier and the locals get some fun events to attend. We hope everyone will encourage their local pub to participate in July’s ‘Pubs & Charity’ month and the community will support these activities.” Des O’Flanagan, one of the cofounders of PubAid, said: “What other industry can demonstrate such generosity and selflessness in this economic climate. These results should act as a reminder that pubs are very much part of the fabric of our community and make a meaningful contribution”. Mr O’Flanagan added, “The PubAid team is dedicated to combatting the areas of the press and perception from some corners that view pubs as only having a negative contribution to society. We do this by sharing the work that pubs do for charitable causes.
The contribution of licensees and their customers is made even more amazing if you consider the financial pressure licensees and consumers are under at the moment”. JD Wetherspoon, who has a pub estate of over 850 pubs, has recently announced they have now raised a staggering £7 million over the years for CLIC Sargent. Lorraine Clifton, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent said, “This is a towering achievement by J D Wetherspoon and it means everything to the children and young people and their families whom we look after. Every penny raised means we can help more children and young people and their families coping with cancer. That is priceless.”

RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Radio Nightingale broadcasts round the clock to provide entertainment for the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. An admission to hospital can be a disorientating and isolating experience as every day is the same and time becomes elongated as normal routines are broken. With the comfort provided by Radio Nightingale many patients report being better able to relax and take the rest they need to support their recovery. Radio Nightingale is run by volunteers and we are looking for people to join our team who can help out with maintaining our website, producing jingles and recorded programmes, designing publications and organise fundraising events. If you’re interested in offering a few hours per week to help Radio Nightingale you can apply online at www.radionightingale.org.uk. Fill in your details and we’ll be in touch... Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale. org.uk Twitter: @nightingale1350 Facebook: radionightingale

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Back in the mists of time, there once was a fellow DJ called Kenny Everett who entertained audiences a plenty on radio and then on TV. Remember Sid Snot, Cupid Stunt and that dance group which, unlike their predecessors Legs and Co and Pan’s People, which featured male and female members prancing about to the hits of the day? They were of course Hot Gossip and even had their own hit with I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper, and one the stars behind the outfit Arlene Phillips is a special guest this week in the mornings with us on Magic. She has of course featured on TV far more recently in a more sedate setting as a judge of Strictly Come Dancing. Plus, she’s behind Midnight Tango the stage story starring Vincent and Flavia from the show. It uses the dance throughout the story told and it’s back on tour again. Arlene will be chatting about her life and tell us more about the show. Plus don’t forget that we have tickets for next week’s Great Yorkshire Show to give away all week. Join Glenn and myself each morning up to Friday, and I’m also here Saturdays as well from 6 to 10am.
FESTIVAL
CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Glastonbury festival seems to get bigger every year. News of who’s playing, what the weather is doing and what the celebs are wearing is hard to avoid during ‘Glasto’ weekend. It’s come a long way since the first festival on Michael Eavis’s Worthy Farm in Pilton back in 1970. Then, a mere 1,500 people attended whereas there are ten times that number nowadays. What is the club link? There is the clear one of Glastonbury being a massive celebration of live music which the clubs have contributed much to over the years including providing a training ground for bands and other performers, some of them making it to the ‘Glasto’ stages. Another link is that the Pilton has a Working Men’s Club! It is housed in a communal facility alongside the Village Hall and Post Office. According their website, ‘it is a social space, a place for the community; a meeting place where all are welcome. As a social hub for the village, various village groups and societies meet there and activities such as Yoga, quizzes and coffee/tea and charity events take place.…quite simply it’s a place where people can meet up with friends and neighbours to be part of the village.’ This sounds like a great example of a community club. The original building dates back centuries but had fallen into disrepair in the late 19th century and was uninhabited. Locals probably heard about clubs being established across the country so held a meeting in 1890 to form their own. It was set up in 1893 in a substantially rebuilt building though the old foundations remained as a guide. Like many clubs, it began as a Reading Room, then added a skittle alley, skittles being a popular game in that part of the country. A bar was also installed and the club became an integral part of village social life. Music and making music we are told ‘was a critical part of the character and social activity of the Club and women were involved from an early stage.’ In the 1970s the building was improved, and then again in the 1990s. The WMC opened in 2003, then the Village Hall in 2006 and together offer ‘a wonderful facility in a wonderful village.’ Michael Eavis, owner of Worthy Farm and host to Glastonbury Festival, is one of the trustees. With someone as dynamic and community oriented as he is, the Pilton WMC is set to have a great future!

ARCTIC MONKEYS MOTORPOINT ARENA 02/11/13
PREVIEW
Words by KT Evans
It is an almost impossible mission to wonder around Sheffield and not see handfuls of references towards Arctic Monkeys. Steel Cities finest and one of the most influential bands of our generation, the four piece from High Green have reached international heights, touring around the globe to attracts fans in extraordinary amounts… not forgetting Glastonbury 2013. Brightening up our forthcoming winter months, Arctic Monkeys have announced a full UK tour, concluding in Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 2nd November 2013. Arctic Monkeys are an institution. Not only are they Sheffield’s proudest export, they are also certified national treasures, adored by music supporters within each and every continent. To track the progress the quartet have made in the last eight years is really quite astonishing. Growing up in the suburbs of Sheffield, the band gigged and toured throughout the city, gaining a name for themselves within the boundaries of Yorkshire. Visit any local music venue and you can see the signs of the early Arctic Monkeys…the old Boardwalk was littered with pictures of Alex Turner as a youngster, The Frog and Parrot Pub has signed pictures and memorabilia, The infamous Leadmill with its regular tributes to the rock ‘n’ rollers…quite simply, Sheffield couldn’t be prouder. 2006 saw the band’s debut album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ make an astonishing record as the fastest selling debut album in chart history. Hits ‘Mardy Bum,’ ‘I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor’ and ‘When The Sun Goes Down’ were not only safeguarded as current anthems, but have remained as the best songs of the decade. Two more albums followed, ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ in 2007 and ‘Humbug’ in ’09, proceeded by controversially brilliant record number four ‘Suck It And See.’ A gritty mix of sinking blues alongside deep rooted southern rock ‘n’ roll, ‘Suck It And See’ was released in 2011, bookmarking the very pinnacle of Alex Turner’s song writing ability. Without a doubt the most talented song writer in the last thirty years, Turner never fails to reach above and beyond what is expected of him as a lyricist. Track ‘Love Is a Laser Quest’ is as ironic as it is heartfelt, alongside the crude title track, emoting sleazy visions of love and relationships. Last March saw the hit ‘R U Mine?’ released as a single, smashing its way into number 23 in the UK chart on downloads alone, followed on by brand new release ‘Do I Wanna Know’ hitting the web last month…yet another stroke of genius from Sheffield’s most talented group. But how could we forget Glastonbury 20113, headlining one of the world’s biggest festival. We won’t spoil it for you if you have not yet viewed the footage, although we strongly suggest you get a box of Kleenex in…it’s a weepy one. Arctic Monkeys are performing at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 2nd November. Tickets go on sale on 5th July, check out www.arcticmonkeys.com for more details.

TRAMLINES AT THE CORPORATION 19-21 JULY
PREVIEW Words by KT Evans
Tramlines to Sheffield is what Hendersons Relish is to Yorkshire Puddings, what The Leadmill is to the local music scene, what Devonshire Green is to burning to a crisp. Putting it bluntly, Tramlines Festival is everything exciting and innovative about the Steel City. 2013 will once again see an eclectic mix of bands, artists and acts bring their live show to our city to tantalise the taste buds of ticket holders this years. But have you checked out the line up at Corporation? We think you might like it… Whether hardcore, rock or metal is or isn’t your thing, remember the ethos of Tramlines…trying something new. This truly is the beauty of the festival, where a variation of musical preferences can draw together into a weekend of pure entertainment. Running from 19th – 21st July, Corporation’s Skull and Bones Presents stage is to be ran from 20th – 21st, so get in your competition kidneys and prepare for one hell of a weekend. Headlining Saturday 20th July at the most brutal stage of the festival goes to Canterbury. Although not what you might have expected for a metal line-up, Canterbury are all about bringing together alternative rock riffs alongside stupidly catchy choruses within each and every performance. Saturday will also see Gnarwolves, Neck Deep and Belgium’s Steak Number Eight. Although still old enough to legally buy themselves a pint back in their native homeland, Steak Number Eight have a sound why more mature than their years. Upbeat, energetic metal with an additional humorous punch, bring a banana…you’ll understand when you watch a particular song live... Sunday 21st July is set for a cracking day of metal, with Sheffield’s Black Dogs kicking off the day. Having supported the likes of Hate Breed and Bring Me The Horizon, Black Dogs are all about bringing explosive live shows. Yorkshire crew Marmozets are a pack certified to bring the mosh pit, along with Southern hardcore clan Polar. No strangers to the rock stages of Sheffield’s Corporation, Polar’s new single ‘Aspire and Create’ will get you going in such a way, we suggest you wear a gum shield… they’re pretty big at instigating their walls of death. Headlining Sunday 21st will be Feed The Rhino. Quickly building a name for themselves within the hardcore UK scene, if you want to experience a polished and professional live progressive hardcore band, come check these out. Visit www.tramlines.org.uk for the full line up including ticket information and news.

Everyone knows zombies are starving for brains and there’s no better place to see the walking dead than on prime-time television (especially ITV2 – the ‘home of Katie Price’). Sadly, when I mention the living dead, I’m not talking about gruesome horrothon, The Walking Dead, but rather cackling Alesha Dixon’s new show, Your Face Sounds Familiar (which I’m betting is not the first time she’s said that on a Saturday night). Just when I thought TV could sink no lower than Splash, bottom of the barrel TV spectacularly returns with the show that makes Made in Chelsea look like Mastermind (which in turn makes The Only Way is Essex look like Tellytubbies). If you were lucky enough to miss this utter delight full of charm and whimsy, this is a show that passes z-list celebrities off as famous singers. It really is frightful crap hiding under the guise of prime time entertainment. If I wanted to go to the land Autotune forgot, I’d go to Glastonbury; I don’t want to see attention-seeking wannabe celebrities annihilating popular songs – god knows most of these zelebrities are dire enough in their own “professions” - this show sets the cringe dial to maximum! If the show wasn’t bad enough on its own merit, Alesha Dixon’s god-awful laugh must be in the running for ‘most annoying thing on earth’ (along with Genital Herpes and stepping in dog sh!t). But by FAR the worst thing about this show is that it’s trying to snare viewers by using the words: it’s for charity, which is a low blow even for ITV. Ultimately, this is Stars in Your Eyes gone very, very wrong, and it’s further proof that tv continues to dumb down to stupefying levels. If it gets any dumber we’ll all be sitting through an hour of celebrity grass growing (with Alan Twatmarsh) in the coming years. Ultimately, Your Face Sounds Familiar is entertainment only for charity veterans, zombies, and torture porn fetishists. And speaking of the brain dead, I was invited to the inaugural event run by Zombie Earth, a professional group that’s seriously into zombies. And I don’t mean in the “hey darling <squish>, don’t you think our sexperimentation has got a little too freaky <slop>”, but I mean these guys are true fans of the zombie genre. They ran their first Laser Quest event in Leicester last weekend, and I was invited along to be shoot people, scream a lot, and be chased by zombies. OK, so it’s just another night at Meadowhall then. But this isn’t just Laser Quest. It’s Laser Quest with zombies! We were invited to the top of a car park at dusk, armed with laser guns and a definite sense of trepidation, and set about trying to score as many points as we could by shooting the rival team while running away from the zombies that were scattered about trying to eat our brains (actually they were trying to pull little tags off our bodies that reduced
our score but that hardly matters when someone covered in blood is groaning at you). It’s rare times when you get the opportunity to make a filthy joke about a celebrity and the words “covered in blood” and “groaning”, but on this one occasion, I’ll take the high road and not mention Paris Hilton (although her resemblance to the walking dead is uncanny)… Back to the event and you know things are going to take gruesome turn when the first thing you see is a blood-spattered girl in pigtails carrying a teddy (it could have been a baby – I didn’t dare look too closely). The teams were great, the atmosphere fantastic and the games were supremely well run. Overall, Zombie Earth Laser Quest was an incredibly visceral experience. The zombies were a great addition to the mix and the whole setting really did feel like something out of 28 Days Later. I won’t deny I psyched myself up before the event just so I’d really get into the feel of it. Which was probably a bad idea as whenever you put zombies in anything, there’s bound to be at least one particularly scary moment and it was during my first game when I thought I was safely secured behind a bunch of boxes, shooting quiet happily away, only to be roused from concentration by a zombie standing literally inches behind me. Now, an overactive imagination combined with all that adrenaline plus a gruesome gore-spattered zombie mere inches behind you groaning away makes for… well, let’s just say I ran away screaming like a school girl who’s just learned Harry Styles has got engaged. In fact I think I uttered sounds only dogs can hear that night! If you’ve ever had a desire to supercharge your Laser Guest, or ever wanted to re-enact the Walking Dead for real, then look no further than Zombie Earth. Their next game is a three hour chase across Leicester with waypoints and missions to accomplish. It’s not for those of a frail disposition or those who can’t manage to run more than a few paces without collapsing in a breathless heap, but it is for those horror-fan adrenaline junkies who want a bit more excitement than just shooting each other with ray guns. Check out Zombie earth at http://www.zombieearth. co.uk/

7 DAY SOAPWATCH
Coronation Street Mon: David plays devil’s advocate with Nick and Leanne. Will Chesney tell Katy the truth about Ryan? Can Anna finally breathe a sigh of relief? Wed: Tempers fray between Nick and Leanne. Will Katy confront Ryan? Things go from bad to worse for Paul. Fri: With the street divided, will Paul apologise to Lloyd? Carla worries that Peter has a new addiction. And Sinead warns Chesney that she will not be messed around.
Emmerdale Mon: Despite their kiss, Debbie warns Cameron to stay away. Rhona worries she has been caught out. Nicola and Steve almost share an intimate moment. Tues: Rhona’s addiction puts Laurel and Leo in mortal danger. Cameron promises Debbie he’ll back off, breaking her heart even further. Wed: Laurel’s suspicious to see Cain in possession of her stolen car. Sandy tries to make things up with Edna. Thurs: Rhona sinks to a new low when she stages a break in at the vets. Laurel fails to help the police find her carjacker. Brenda determines to have a ceremony before her hair falls out. Fri: Rhona’s caught out when Vanessa confronts her about her lies. Bob encourages Brenda not to be ashamed of her shaven head. A reconciliation meal between Priya and Rachel backfires. Eastenders Mon: Dexter gives Ava an ultimatum that leaves her with an extremely difficult discussion to make. Bianca is feeling the pressure but will she let someone who is innocent take the blame for her actions? Ian is alarmed when the police are called but will he tell them the truth or lie to cover his back? Tues: Sam tries to talk Dexter round before it’s too late but will Dexter change his mind or stick to his instincts? Kat falls out with Bianca after her actions put Jean in danger but will this be the end of their friendship? Thurs: Michael sets himself a mission to get back in Janine’s good books but it looks like his plans may be scuppered when a face from the past reappears. Fri: Lucy is put in a predicament when Ian asks for her help, will she be willing to assist him after everything that’s happened in their troubled past? Bianca is left out of her mind with worry when Liam does a runner before the court hearing but help comes from an unlikely source. Home & Away Mon: Brax, Heath and Kyle devise a plan to rescue the girls. Adam informs the police of Kyle’s return. The boys find one of the girls unconscious, but where is the other? Tues: Bianca is convinced that Holly’s accusation against Zac is made up, but Holly won’t drop the charges, so the authorities are informed and he is suspended. Wed: Maddy is upset by the strong connection that Spencer has formed with Sasha. Worried that his uni results are not up to scratch, Dex avoids looking at them. Thurs: Feeling let down by John, Jett runs away. Discovering that he only just passed his exams, Dex fears that he may never fully recover his mental capabilities. Fri: Bianca finds proof that Holly’s accusations against Zac are untrue, but not before the local paper runs it as a front page story. Neighbours Mon: After Terese gets tough on her at work, Caroline goes to Paul, who places a reassuring hand on her leg. When Terese fires her, Caroline hires Toadie to sue Paul for sexual harassment. Tues: Toadie asks Sheila to testify against Paul, but she worries that it will put her job at risk. Paul is certain that Caroline won’t press her claim. Wed: Realising that he is still in love with Kate, Imogen breaks up with Mason. As Kate’s guilt over her tryst with Kyle increases, he tries to persuade her to keep it secret from Georgia. Thurs: As Kyle’s sight is restored, he holds a BBQ to say thanks for the support he has received, at which Mason kisses Kate. But her guilt causes her to flee. Fri: An electrical crisis at Harold’s causes Lauren to blow a fuse.

Although lately more owners than ever are taking their pets on holiday with them, there will still be occasions when our four-legged friends may have to stay behind when we go away. To help ensure a happy holiday for all concerned, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Elaine Pendlebury, has put together a helpful guide for owners. Family, friends and neighbours A trusted friend, family member or neighbour can be invaluable when planning holiday care for pets, and having someone familiar to take care of them can be far less stressful for you and your pet. A house sitter who is familiar with your pets is a useful option and dogs especially shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time as they are very social animals. They should either have somebody stay in the house with them, or go and stay at the home of someone they know. This is also a nice option for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and cats that are used to plenty of cuddles, or any other pets that require care and human interaction. Petsitters Reputable “pet sitters” that stay in your home with your pets can be a good option, particularly for cats who can find change very stressful. Make sure you use a registered sitter and ask for references. A prospective sitter should be happy to visit you and meet your pets before you make a decision. Kennels and catteries These are ideal if you are away for any length of time and your pets cope well with new environments and different people. Plan well ahead as the best ones get booked up quickly during peak periods, and visit beforehand to make sure you’re happy with the environment. A good facility will welcome any new potential client to look around.

Boarding kennels and catteries should require proof of up-to-date vaccinations, information about your pet’s diet, exercise and other daily routines, plus your vet’s contact details. Many kennels will also require that your dog is vaccinated against kennel cough which is a contagious infection that can be transmitted in kennel environments. Holiday Care Checklist: · Remember to leave a letter giving permission for your carer to authorise any veterinary treatment, should your pet need care while you’re away · Write down your pet’s diet, exercise needs and their usual routine – it can be difficult for someone else to remember the details · Make sure you leave contact details for your vet, plus any relevant medical history · Make a list of likes and dislikes, and leave a favourite toy or blanket – these home comforts can help reduce any stress your pet might experience

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
Whilst out on the bank today, I’ve had my rod licence checked....not for the first time at this particular venue either, and whilst discussing that fact, the very polite EA bailiffs and I talked further about their work....what do they do?? The obvious and perhaps most visible task is the licence check, designed to apprehend miscreants who fish illegally without one; the lads explained that this can also be one of the most unpleasant roles they undertake as invariably the criminal (and they are) without the correct paperwork becomes verbally abusive or even physically violent... hence the need these days for stab proof protection, a baton and a colleague! They also explained about pollution, conservation and a whole host of other work, but I didn’t know that surveillance is also fairly high on the ‘to do’ list as well. I was unaware that the limited resources of the EA stretched to such events, but I was told that if an illegal netting/long line or similar operation is suspected, then the perpetrator must be caught ‘in action’ for there to be any chance of prosecution. Long hours can be spent lurking in the undergrowth waiting for individuals or teams to retrieve the booty, all of which has to be logged, photographed and documented without error or the prosecution will fail. As an angler myself, finding a set line or gill net and removing it would seem fairly sensible to prevent the fish being harmed, but I’m advised that leaving it in situ and reporting it is a far better option; yes, admittedly a few fish will probably die, but it allows the EA to put surveillance in place to try and catch the offenders and thus save far more fish in the long run....makes sense really... I’ve often heard anglers complain that nothing is done about certain ethnic groups either, but the EA team relayed experiences of following up reports only to find that said minority groups or individuals do hold rod licences which makes gathering evidence doubly hard, and that many complaints are malicious stereotypical hearsay. They admitted however thatthere is a serious problem with fish being taken for the table, but in their opinion, supporting educational programmes and encouraging culture change is the way forward. Many clubs have taken this onboard and some excellent work is being done by a number of associations with non UK nationals as bailiffs or mentors to help the EA combat this issue, so by working with anglers, progress is being made.....however prosecution will follow where required, so if you do witness an angling crime.....report it. So are the EA teams really as useless as many anglers seem to think? Or should they be given a little more credit? Where do you turn when oxygen levels plummet in your waters? Or slurry enters a watercourse? How about restocking fish in areas depleted by pollution? What about educational programmes and encouraging young anglers? Criminal proceedings against poachers? The list goes on...... There are no doubt many anglers with horror stories about reports made to the EA which are apparently never followed up; well, another thing I found out is that every report has to be actioned and closed, and you can ask to be given feedback to find out what went on, so if you see anything which shouldn’t be happening on our waterways, give the boys in green a call. Your call enables an ‘intelligence picture’ to be compiled so they can target limited resources effectively; every snippet counts..... There is much more to the job than checking licences and if you do talk to a bailiff, you may be very surprised to find just how few resources they do have to do the huge job we all want them to do, so keep ‘em peeled and help them out a bit; if you see it, report it....the number is on your licence!

This weekend’s top meeting comes from Sandown and features the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes which sees the classic generation take on its elders for the first time this year at this level. Over at Haydock the same thing happens for Fillies and Mares at Group 2 level in the bet365 Lancashire Oaks. It is a pretty interesting line-up for the Channel 4 coverage with decent supporting races. Sandown: 2.05 Coral Charge (Registered as The Sprint Stakes), Group 3, 3yo+, 5f 6yds: With Dutch Masterpiece stepping up from handicaps seeking a hat-trick and several of these having clashed in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot when finishing behind Sole Power this looks wide open. Those with Group race wins in their CVs are: Kingsgate Native (Group 1); Masamah and Spirit Quartz (Group 2); and Bungleinthejungle, Mince and Tickled Pink (Group 3). However, the key to this race may be to take the King’s Stand form through the fourth in that race, Jack Dexter, who boosted its merits last weekend when landing the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle. In the King’s Stand race Jack Dexter finished 1 ¾ lengths behind Sole Power at level weights. Bungleinthejungle was nearest to him a further 3 ¼ lengths adrift with Stepper Point, Hoyam, Kingsgate Native, and Spirit Quartz all further behind. However, in the Chipchase Mirza was only 2 ½ lengths behind Jack Dexter (again at level weights) which to my mind, on a line through that one, gives him a slight edge over these rivals on these terms. Moviesta and Duke of Firenze are others stepping up from handicaps that could prove troublesome to the selection. 2.40 Coral Challenge (Handicap), Class 2, 3yo+, 1m 14yds: With several last time out winners in the field this is a difficult race to assess. Roserrow was gutsy when making most to win over course and distance last time, a victory whose form was franked last weekend at Windsor by Gaul Wood winning a 0-90 handicap. Roserrow is much respected and is not lightly passed over but I suspect that there could be a few in here who may have more to offer at the weights. Kevin Ryan sets something of a poser here with Pintura, Capaill Liath and Trail Blaze. The latter pair clashed at Ayr recently with Capaill Liath coming out on top. However, Trail Blaze has since gone on to finish third at Newcastle behind Diescentric, who looked to be a horse going places fast. The value of that form could be significant and if he turns out here he must have a live chance in a very competitive race. With the other collateral form values of the recent winners in the field not being too obvious I have resorted to my speed figures last time out, the best of which are: Trail Blaze (133); St Moritz (127); Albaqaa (112); Glen Moss (112); Wentworth (107); and Windhoek (105). On lifetime-best ratings the Godolphin horse Sandagyr has a chance but has not shown much so far this term. 3.15 Coral Distaff, Listed, 3yo Fillies, 1m 14yds: These are pretty closely matched on my speed figures but with several with only a few races behind them (and consequently looking unexposed) there could be a couple of surprise packages lurking. I would not be astounded if any of them were to win but have again resorted to my last time out speed figures for my selection in this one. These give: Nargys (110); Woodland Aria (101); Light up My Life (101); Auction (99); Discernable (91); Broadway Duchess (88); Integral (81). 3.50 Coral-Eclipse Stakes, Group 1, 3yo+, 1m 2f 7yds: This revolves around the progressive Al Kazeem who has the beating of Mukhadram, The Fugue, Camelot and Miblish on his Prince of Wales’s Stakes win. He is bound to take a deal of beating but is priced accordingly at the current 6/4 (and possibly could be even shorter on the day). Mukhadram ran a great race only to be denied in the final strides and must rate a danger to Al Kazeem here. Further down the field in sixth place in that race was the French horse Maxios who could also prove to be a pointer here. He was possibly held up too far off the decent pace set by Mukhadram to get close enough to challenge and I suspect that the ground was too fast for him in any case but he had a Group 1 win to his credit in his previous race. However, prior to that effort he had finished a one length second in the Group 1 Prix Ganay to the German horse Pastorius who is a major player in my estimation. Another rather large fly in the ointment could be Declarationof War who equalled the speed figure of Al Kazeem last time out when winning the Queen Anne Stakes at the
Haydock: 2.20 bet365.com Condition Stakes, Class 2, 3yo+, 6f: This looks to be another closely fought contest in the offing. On the basis of last time out speed figures I am going for Brian Meehan’s Intibaah. The top few respective figures are: Intibaah (112); Storm Moon (106); Free Zone (100); Dubawi Sound (95); Addictive Dream (93); Annunciation (84). 2.55 bet365 Lancashire Oaks, Group 2, 3yo+ Fillies and Mares, 1m 3f 200yds: Midnight Soprano could hold the key after her Group 3 Noblesse Stakes win at Cork where she beat Cubanita (3rd) and Silky (4th) with Beach of Falesa and Say further down the field both holding up the form at The Curragh last weekend. Lady Cecil’s runners Songbird and Wild Coco are both very much in the picture here and are respected. However, I also like the form of Mick Channon’s filly Contradict who finished ninth behind Pacific Rim in the Group 2 Prix de Malleret on June 23rd. That race was run in a fast time and if she turns up for this she could be a decent value choice. 3.30 bet365 Old Newton Cup, (Heritage Handicap), Class 2, 4yo+, 1m 3f 200yds: As handicaps go they don’t get much trickier than this. Purely on the basis of last time out ratings (and without too much confidence) my pecking order for this one is: Guarantee (171); The Tiger (147); Franciscan (144); Haylaman (138); Life and Soul (134); Scattter Dice (134); Camborne (128); Party Line (119); and Strictly Silver (108)

Royal meeting. The respective last time out speed ratings of the field here are: Pastorius (144); Al Kazeem (125) Declaration of War (125); Mukhadram (124); Mars (122); Camelot (117); The Fugue (115) and Miblish (114). With so little between them on speed figures and the current prices showing Al Kazeem at 6/4, Declaration of War at 4/1, Mukhadram at 6/1 and Pastorius at 9/1 I have to conclude that Al Kazeem does not offer much in the way of value and that Pastorius merits the selection on a value basis of collateral form, price and speed rating.

One of United’s newest recruits is excited about the prospect of working with David Weir and playing at Bramall Lane. Stephen McGinn, formerly of Watford, signed a two-year deal with the option of a third last week, and is keen to get to work in South Yorkshire. Of his switch to the Steel City and his previous memories of his new club, the 24-year-old remarked: “This move was something out of the blue, but once David (Weir) was appointed as manager it picked up pace quickly. “When a club like Sheffield United shows a genuine interest in you, you want the move to happen as quickly as possible. I was keen to come here and I am determined to hit the ground running throughout pre-season. “I can remember playing at Bramall Lane for Watford, who were 1-0 up with 10 minutes left. United had a succession of corners as they chased the equaliser and the atmosphere and support was something I haven’t forgotten, the place was rocking. “The new manager has made a fantastic impression on the lads already and everyone can’t wait to get started with the pre-season games.” Last season, McGinn scored against the Blades whilst on-loan at Shrewsbury Town and the midfielder says his spell at the Greenhous Meadow was crucial to him as he banished memories of a serious knee injury, sustained whilst a Hornet. He added: “I had a bad knee injury against Doncaster Rovers a couple of years ago, but I have worked extremely hard to work my way back from that. “I enjoyed my time at Shrewsbury last season, most of all proving to everyone I was back and able to perform consistently. After last season I am confident I am fully over that injury and am genuinely excited about the future with Sheffield United.”
Dave Jones has spoken of his delight having secured the Owls’ first signing of the summer in the shape of wing star Jacques Maghoma. The 25-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with Wednesday, who beat a host of clubs for the signature of the DR Congo international. Jones said: “I’m really pleased to bring Jacques to the club because he’s been a hot property for some time. “Even back in his Tottenham days as a kid, he was predicted to do real big things in the game and he’s had a great time with Burton. “Now he wants to take his game higher, he’s an ambitious lad and he wants to progress. “Of course, when you get someone with his talent available on a free transfer, there’s going to be a lot of interest in him and that proved the case. “We were talking to him for some time because there were other Championship clubs who wanted him. “I met Jacques in London then we brought up him up here and showed him around and thankfully he decided this felt like the right club for him.” Maghoma top-scored for Burton last season in their march to the play-offs, posting an impressive 18 goals from midfield. He made the League 2 Team of the Year as a result, as well as landing the Burton Players’ Player of the Year award. Jones added: “His credentials are there for everyone to see. He’s quick, he scores goals and he provides assists. “He can play in different positions too and that will be a real bonus.”
BLADES HEAD OVER THE BOARDER
SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk The Blades set off to Scotland this week as David Weir prepares to oversee his first three matches as United boss. “Everyone is looking forward to it,” said Weir. “It will get the boys up and running in a different environment. “We want to get some football into the boys at a level that is competitive. We’ll also be doing some training up there but you cannot replicate actual games and the fixtures are all part of the build up to be ready for the start of August.” All three of the Blades opponents north of the border competed in the Scottish First Division last season, with Wednesday’s opposition, Greenock Morton, finishing second behind winners Partick Thistle. The pre-season curtain raiser at Cappielow Park kicks off at 7.30pm. Saturday sees the Blades head to Central Park to tackle the Blue Brazil of Cowdenbeath, kick-off 3pm, and the tour is rounded off on Wednesday 10th July with a visit to Stark’s Park to face Raith Rovers, kick-off 7.30pm.

THOUSANDS FLOCK TO FUNDAY Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank the thousands of fans who helped make Owls in the Park even bigger and better than last year. The SWFC community programme’s inflatable pitch, face painting, penalty shootouts and multi sports activities also went down a treat with young Owls on the day.

Doncaster Rovers are pleased to announce that Paul Butler has been appointed as first team coach. The appointment of Butler further bolsters Paul Dickov’s backroom staff after the confirmation of Brian Horton joining, as Dickov’s assistant, yesterday. Butler had previously worked with manager Paul Dickov at Oldham Athletic before taking up a coaching role under Paul Ince at Blackpool. Upon joining the club Bulter spoke exclusively to Rovers Player and revealed that he is looking forward to this opportunity. “The two years I spent with Paul [Dickov] at Oldham were invaluable for me as a young coach. The remit of my job at Oldham was a really good learning experience for me. It was an internship, if you like, at senior level professional football; I had a lot of responsibilities and was exposed to a lot of different situations. “It was a really good experience and I have built up a fantastic relationship with Paul [Dickov] and we work well together so when he called me about the opportunity here it wasn’t a difficult decision to make. “I am young for a first team coach, but I don’t think age is an issue. I think if you’re good enough you’re old enough and Paul has given me this opportunity to prove that. “We’ve got a great opportunity here, which is not necessarily the same as at other football clubs, I’ve got a manager who is prepared to expose me to what I need to be exposed to, to improve and develop as a young first team coach. “We have also got Brian Horton here, as assistant manager, who has managed over 1000 games so every experience that Paul and I will have here together, he will have experienced tens of times over - I think he will be invaluable to Paul and myself alike.”
NEW SIGNING PREDICTS TOUGH TEST RUFC NEWS www.themillers.co.uk New signing David Worrall believes Rotherham United’s upcoming pre-season friendlies are the perfect test ahead of the Millers return to League One. The 23-year-old winger is one of six new recruits, who reported for the start of preseason training on Wednesday, and the former West Brom and Bury wide man can’t wait to test his ability against Championship opposition in July. “The friendlies sound exciting, and I think it will be a good early test for us playing against some high calibre opposition,” Worrall told www.themillers.co.uk “When I was at West Brom we did the same, we took on tough opposition and I always felt that it was a huge benefit for us in the long term. I think everyone wants to impress in pre-season and show they can compete against quality opposition so it is a good test for us and I’m looking forward to the challenge. “It is good to be back, I am ready to work hard, I’ve kept in good shape during the close season and I will be preparing for some hard days training as we prepare for the new season.” The Millers will also be travelling north of the border for a pre-season tour of Scotland (see the link below for ticket details), taking on Greenock Morton, Ayr United and Livingston. “I am looking forward to the games in Scotland as well, we didn’t get away in my five years with Bury, so a different environment for a week is something I am sure will only aid our preparation,” added Worrall.
