A Brit has won Wimbledon, summer seems to have ﬁnally arrived, and arrangements are well under way for this year’s Epworth and District Agricultural Show on 26th August. Always promising to be a great day out, Epworth Show Field will once again play host to some of the region’s best agricultural and horticultural shows, as well as great entertainment along the way on August Bank Holiday Monday. “For those who have always shied away from such events, I would really recommend a visit this year,” says Dave Hayes Chairman of the Epworth and District Agricultural Society. “Even if you are not the farming type, it is still a great day out with lots of events such as Lurcher and Terrier Racing, Gun Dogs, Bernese Carter Dogs, the all important Beer Tent, and also Titan the Robot who is perfect for any age, just don’t get too close!” As well as the usual fun and frolics there will also be a wide range of equine events and competitions, and a wonderful array of livestock such as goats, sheep, cattle, Mountain and Moorland ponies, a dog show and also a Bonny Baby Competition. There will be live music from Rita Payne, and Garry Magic will be roaming around with his magic show. “The Epworth and District Agricultural Show is a great way to demonstrate our natural heritage and embrace it, as well as having fun along the way,” continues Dave. “A lot of hard work and preparation from our Committee goes into organising the show, and the high numbers of visitors we have attend reﬂects this, and the show grows each year.” Save the date in your diary and prepare for some countryside frolics this August Bank Holiday Monday. MOBILE LIBRARY The mobile library is available to any Shefﬁeld resident who is unable to get to their local library and has no-one to help them do so. So if you cannot get into your local library because of access problems; or if you are able to get to the library but you cannot carry the books you have chosen; or for cultural reasons cannot attend a library, then the mobile library service is for you. The Mobile Library service may also be able to offer the service on a temporary basis, for example, whilst you are recovering from an operation or during the bad winter weather. RISE OF FINANCIAL ABUSE AMONG OLDER PEOPLE More older people in Sheffield are being financially abused by their relatives because of the economic downturn, a report from Sheffield City Council indicates. The authority received 206 reports of financial abuse of older people in 2010/2011 compared to 114 in 2009/2010. Sue Fiennes, chairwoman of Sheffield Adults Safeguarding Partnership, said such abuse took many forms including stealing money from relatives. She said current financial difficulties had put greater pressures on people. Ms Fiennes said many of the cases were a “breach of trust”. She added: “When finances are tight for people there will be more pressure to find money and resources where people have not felt they should or would not have found it before.” She continues to state that ’’It’s horrible to say but most of the time it’s the son or daughter stealing from the parents” Ms Fiennes said many of the victims did not raise the issue with the relative for fear of being isolated. She said because such cases were being brought to their attention, the safeguarding board was better able to assist with the problem. Gary Fitzgerald, chief executive of charity Action on Elder Abuse, said the cases in Sheffield were typical of what was happening across the country. He said “There’s a delicate line to cross and it’s a simple one. It’s when the old person feels they don’t have control over the money and that transfer of control can be very subtle when it’s one of your own family.” Should you think you or a relative is being abused, don’t hesitate to contact the Sheffield City Council Adult Safeguarding Coordinators at Redvers House on 0114 273 6870 or the Police.

THIRST FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES

A pioneering study conducted by the Challenging Obstacles and Barriers Assisted Living Technology (COBALT) research team discovered that despite being branded a generation of technophobes older people are actually happy and eager to embrace new devices and equipment. The research group, led by academics from the University of Sheffield, have been working closely with a wide range of older adults and health and social care professionals across the UK to identify why there is currently a huge gap between developments in technology and the low uptake of people using it in their daily lives. Extensive research has found that when asked to describe technology they love – older adults frequently mentioned mobile, phones, computers and digital cameras. Reasons included that the technology is easy or convenient to use, it enables them to keep doing things that are important to them and meets their needs. When asked about the equipment they had abandoned, reasons included that the device was cumbersome or did not meet their needs and that the technology was difficult to use. COBALT research suggests a lack of awareness of what is available and the knowledge of how to access it are two of the main obstacles preventing people using technology. The study also highlighted a gap between mainstream technology which is used by everyone, such as iPads and smart phones, and technology provided by statutory services. These devices tend to be prescribed in response to specific health and social care needs, for example a pendant alarm issued after a fall or medication reminders given to people with mild memory problems. Some of these items are seen as stigmatising or marking people out as vulnerable. COBALT project leader, Professor Arlene Astell from the University of Sheffield’s School of Health and Related Research, said: “Technology can play a big part in helping people stay at home and keep doing the things that are important for them to have a good life. If older people can live independently as long as possible this is good for them, their families and society. “With our ageing population it is increasingly important to keep people as well and independent as possible, which includes their mental health. Keeping them in their own homes and out of hospital is a priority for health and social care providers and technology has a vital role to play.” The COBALT research shows that older adults have a thirst for technology that can make their life better. As part of understanding the barriers of getting technology out to people, COBALT has also worked with health and social care staff, service commissioners and providers. By gathering knowledge and experiences from all these groups COBALT aims to help the Assistive Living Technology (ALT) industry take advantage of the current gap in the market and place the UK at the forefront of developing technology for older adults. NEW SERVICE FROM AGEUK SHEFFIELD A new service has been launched by Age UK Sheffield to support older people living in their own homes in the city. The charity, which helps older people retain their independence by living in their own homes for as long as possible, has recruited a team of volunteers to deliver the service. They will provide company, have a chat and a drink with those they are visiting and will help with small jobs around the house and garden. Rosalind Eve, Age UK Sheffield chief executive, said: “Sheffield has one of the most rapidly ageing populations in the UK, yet many older people struggle to access the kind of support that will help them live their lives more fully. We want to widen access to that support. “And the mission of our experienced, friendly and trustworthy team is to give isolated people in Sheffield the tools and information they need to get more out of life.” Age UK Sheffield’s visiting service costs users £8 per hour, which helps pay for volunteer recruitment, training, supervision and expenses. We pick up this week on the links between railways and clubs. Organising trips by train began early because club members wanted to visit different places on the expanding railways. These early efforts laid down a longstanding club tradition- the annual club outing. Some trips were to local places of interest whilst others were further afield, perhaps to the burgeoning seaside resorts such as Blackpool or country parks. Clubs would sometimes charter whole trains for their outing. For many working people, this was their one and only excursion during the year, perhaps the only time they went to the seaside or countryside. The Great Western Railway was dubbed the ‘holiday line’ because so many popular resorts were along this route along the South West coast such as Dawlish and Newquay, all the way to Penzance. The CIU also organised outings in the Greater London area. The ‘annual summer fete and excursion’ to Moor Park, Buckinghamshire took place on August Bank Holiday, 1885 with special trains chartered leaving Euston with pick-ups at Kilburn and Willesden. The return fare including tea was 3 shillings for adults and 2 shillings for children. ‘All Refreshments will be provided in a commodious Marquee erected in the grounds, where Beer, Spirits, Wines and Mineral Waters may be obtained.’ Everyone would be given tea tickets with two sittings. ‘Punctual attendance at the time stated is requested, to avoid delay and confusion.’ Dinner was also available for the price of one shilling with cold meat, pickles and bread on offer. Apart from eating and drinking in the pleasant surroundings, there were organised sports events with cash prizes for the winners. This shows the CIU’s efforts not only to entertain but also keep their members healthy with friendly competition. The events of the day were accompanied by a programme of music played by the West London Post-Office Band. Throughout the 20th century, clubs took member’s children for days out such as Coventry’s Railwaymen’s Club. The annual outing would often be to Wickstead Park which was a popular Midlands attraction. They were all given lunch and tea and pocket money. ‘The funds for the outing were raised by raffles and from donations from generous club members.’ The club is now in private hands and renamed he Railway Bar and Grill and seems to be doing well. But I doubt there are club outings any longer.

Aside from the uncountable controversies or legal lawsuits against their image, their message or their lyrics, there is one huge factor which is sometimes forgotten about whilst bringing up Iowa heavy metal band Slipknot into conversation…their talent. Regardless of musical preference or taste, anybody with an ear for writing ability would happily tip their hat off to some of the most pioneering and innovative musicians of the last decade. Their headline performance at this year’s Download festival? Everything you could possibly image… Download 2013 was unquestionably rock mecca with over 100,000 ticket holders keen to see some of the world’s most brutal live bands. Headlining the first day of events, Slipknot have long since been the back-bone of nu metal. Along with their four studio albums and various singles released since their formation back in 1995, the eight piece were every bit as mind-blowing as their previous headliner position at Download four years ago. Walking onto ‘Get Behind Me Satan and Push,’ the audience were violently thrust into ‘Disasterpiece,’ a fire blazing, enormous hit of the groups second studio album. Amidst the fire balls, raised drum set and hypnotising members, lead vocalist Corey Taylor is forever the professional, retaining crystal clear lyrics throughout. Easily one of the best frontmen in the industry, see past the mask and its evident how outstanding Taylors vocals are…even in front on 90,000 spectators. Other tracks ‘Liberate,’ ‘Wait and Bleed’ and ‘Dead Memories’ followed all showcasing the fiercely passionate nature of the prowlers. Although still heavily masked and clothed in their famous red jumpsuits, the energy omitted from the band is even stronger whilst masked…forget about focusing on one member alone, Slipknot work in a team to produce a sound no group has yet to reproduce or better in such a way. ‘Gently,’ ‘ Pulse Of The Maggots’ and ‘Psychosocial’ followed, along with easily the most powerful track off the groups repertoire; ‘Duality.’ Adored by rock music fans across the world, their anthemic power track is all about one thing only…the head-bang. Instructing each and every viewer to bang their heads so hard a bangover is the only thing on the cards for the next day, like moths to a flame the audience were at the groups every word…and if you’ve ever nodded so hard you get neck ache, we salute you. A three song encore concluded a monster of a set, closing with ‘Surfacing,’ a poignant moment for the band who have gone through thick and thin to reach such admirable heights. Take everything into consideration and remember the ethos of the group to solely focus on the music and its plain to see… Slipknot are one of the best rock bands ever. Wow we said it.

Are Tramlines 2013 really pulling off the unimaginable…are they to host a festival in the sunshine? Of all the outside gigs Mercury have visited, it’s simple to count the number of purely sunny days on one hand…hold on, there has never been one event where a big fat rain cloud hasn’t plonked itself right in the middle of the day. Are we jinxing this? Who knows, but with a line-up of over 100 bands, we’re your festival godmother for a few moments to sect the mustwatches as this year’s event. Although main stage action doesn’t begin until this Saturday 20th, Sheffield’s city centre is brimming with bands and acts ready to showcase on day one of Tramlines for festival goes on Friday 19th. If you’re into discovering fresh, organic live acts, we recommend you check out the City Hall. Lanterns On The Lake are an alternative indie group stemming from Newcastle-upon-Tyne with a sound worthy of such a prestigious venue. DQ has a massive line-up throughout the weekend, with Andy H headlining Friday night. Originally specialising in hip-hop but ‘…just as happy to drop Dubstep, Drum & Bass or anything that gets the crowd jumping…’ Andy is not only Sheffield’s premium DJ but since his headline spot on the BBC introducing stage at Glastonbury ’11, is a pretty big shout throughout the UK scene aswell. The main ethos of Tramlines is experimentation… discovering new and innovative bands you may not have stumbled across on a standard Spotify session. The Harley on the out-skirts of the city harbours a sturdy selection of bands to choose from throughout its three day bender. Saturday 20th will see Jeramiah Ferrari perform, are a Manchester based group who fuse together roots reggae, rock, punk and sca… sounds unusual? Exactly what Tramlines is all about! Into hardcore? Steak Number 8 at Corporation is your pick of the day, hosting the Skull and Boys Bones Club presents stage. Travelling across from their native Belgium to perform to the Northern massive, Steak Number 8 are all about high energy, adrenaline riddled performances. The final day of Tramlines (we’re sad its going to end already…) will see Rolo Tomassi grace 02 Academy stage 2. With enough bite to scare the mcjeebies out of anyone who hasn’t quite braced themselves, the Sheffield experimental hardcore clan are masters of their craft and deliver on a colossal scale each and every time. Johnny Burrell (ex Razorlight vocalist) is set for performance on Ssunday 21st July at the infamous Leadmill. One to watch for old times sake, if his last group is anything to go by, this alternative side project is going to be one hell of a highlight for this weekend. It’s a metal thigh-slapping review of Pacific Rim this week and I’m not going to make a single joke about movie titles that are crying out to be compared to smutty sex acts. I’m above all of that. It’s only high class quality journalism for me, so strap yourself on (I mean in) and get ready for the money shot ‘cos I’m coming from the behind and I’m ready to beat off the competition with a review that’s out of this world! Look… a whole paragraph without a single innuendo… What could possibly go wrong with a sci-fi action movie that features giant robots and alien monsters from beyond Uranus! Well, quite a lot actually. The movie stars Charlie Hunnam, who coincidentally experienced his own Pacific Rim Job back in 90s in saucy TV series, Queer as Folk. Hunnam plays a no strings (or depth) fighter whose sole job it is to pilot one of the giant robots (called Jaegers) created to defeat the monsters coming through a crack under the sea. And that’s about it for the story. Monsters arrive and the RimBots (they soooo should have been called that) are dispatched to defeat them. We’ve seen more complex plots on the CBBC channel! And that’s the problem with Pacific Rim. It’s about as about as by-the-numbers and predictable as sex with any member of the cast of Hollyoaks (it’s ok for the first thirty minutes but after that you’re clock watching, desperate to put the whole sordid experience behind you). If ever there was a movie that ticked all the cliché boxes then Pacific Rim is it. It’s literally one long movie trope after another from cute dog in military base to the spontaneous group cheering when the monsters go down. It has a script a five year old could have bettered. In fact, the movie is such a collection of clichés that I wasn’t quite sure whether it was all done ironically (which is a tired old cliché in itself). What would have been better was to deliver a movie with a thought-provoking script filled with emotional scenes and characters you care about. Pacific Rim saw none of that. It’s monster bashing all the way. The only depth to this movie was at the bottom of the ocean. Everything else here is shallower than an anorexic’s soup portion at London Fashion Week! To its credit, the movie looks stunning. It’s

brilliant neon and contrasting colours across midnight skies, cityscapes and oceans. But it’s equally the visuals I have the biggest gripe with (which is something I say every time I have to watch Tess Daley - thank God for the “off” button). All the fights are done at night in super blur-o-vision. I don’t know whether director Guillermo Del Toro saw transformers and though “Ooh I got to get me some of that blurry robot fighting action” or not, but it sure looks like he did for there’s more Blur here than at an early 90’s indie pop reunion tour. I like to see the action in my movies and Pacific Rim is blurry down to the point of nausea. If you went to see a naughty movie and things got down to the nitty-gitty but all you saw were blurry objects dangling in front of your face you’d be asking for your money back. I know they say leave your brain at the door for movies like this, but that really should not be a requirement these days. I might be the only way I can get through an episode of the X Factor, but for a movie costing tens of millions of dollars to make, I can’t understand why they have to fail on every single element from script to content to special effects. The source material – Evangelion – has so much soul, I’m not sure who left Pacific Rim so lacking in heart. Or depth. Or substance. Or… well, the list goes on and on. Overally: 6/10. It’s just one long blurry cliché after another. I’d have given this movie a five, but it was lovely in the air-conditioned cinema. Another bonus is that it’s an action movie with a 12A certificate, so you can leave the kids with Pacific Rim and go see a movie with some actual depth. I hear Pacific Rim Job is still playing at the Soggy Tissue Cinema in Rotherham.

Another mental week, rushing around chasing people up to enable me to complete articles (still chasing in fact!) and a variety of other things which resulted in my fishing for precisely two hours! In fairness, I could have managed a few more, but as I sat and watched the water, I started to notice a few things which struck me as strange, so decided to pull my rods in and speak to the bailiff.... This time of year is always difficult for fishery owners; the sun brings out the fair weather boys, but the fish are extremely vulnerable after spawning and the present weather conditions can play absolute havoc with fish welfare. We have had a few days now of blistering sunshine and little wind, so oxygen levels within the water are at risk due to a lack of rain, wind ripple and other factors not replacing the oxygen used by the fish, so the time is ripe for an ‘oxygen crash’. Yesterday, I noticed fish on the surface, charging around in an attempt to get water passing over their gills so they could extract the oxygen, gulping air at the surface, laying up on the lake bed (but not quite upright) and packing themselves very tightly under the bank..... It struck me as very unusual; at first I considered whether fish were spawning again, but the bailiff confirmed it had long since finished, so the next obvious step was to a DO (dissolved oxygen) reading to find out what was happening as, by now, other anglers were becoming concerned. Readings confirmed that levels were becoming depleted by a combination of natural occurrences, warm weather, a rise in water temperature, and an increase of weed growth can all contribute, so an action plan was put in place to increase the amount of oxygen in the water. Aerators are a fishery manager’s best friend when the conditions warrant it, and once fired up, the paddle type or injector system can both restore oxygen parity reasonably quickly. There are other options too; the Fire Service (if available) can be asked to recirculate lake water to force oxygen in and redundant equipment is often ‘bought up’ by fishery owners for just that reason, anglers can be asked to vacate the banks to reduce further stress to the fish, de-silting waters, reducing leaf litter, the addition of Barley straw to encourage algal growth and other things can all be utilised to prevent problems. The advice of the Environment Agency becomes vitally important as do the resources they can offer to prevent fish deaths so it is important to notify them as soon as a problem is recognised. To finish this week then, as anglers we expect fishery owners to provide quality fish. If they fail, we moan; if fish are seen floating dead in the margins, we moan, if we don’t catch because the fish are starved of oxygen, we moan. As anglers, we are also supposed to be conservationists, so take some responsibility too....if it looks as though there may be an issue, don’t just keep fishing.....tell someone! You could keep someone in business!

The weekend’s biggest race is the Irish Oaks which is run at The Curragh at 6.15 on Saturday. That meeting also has a couple of Group 3 races in support. In England Channel 4 is covering three meetings (9 races) with the highest standard of race being the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury at 3.15 and the most valuable one being the Weatherbys Super Sprint at 3.50. At Market Rasen the summer jumps card continues with their big summer hurdle and chase The Curragh: 4.40 Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables Anglesey Stakes, Group 3, 2yo, 6f 63yds: This is a tricky little puzzle with some unexposed (and some unbeaten) horses coming together. However, from my assessment of their achievements to date, it may principally concern Home School and Oklahoma City with a fairly strong preference for the latter. Last time out he won a race by 13 lengths over 6 furlongs at Naas and that race was run a really quick time. This extra furlong should hold no fears for him. After this pair Fountain of Youth, Wilshire Boulevard and Tarn look to be the next best. 5.40 Invesco pension Consultants Minstrel Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 7f: Aidan O’Brien again holds the key to this one in my estimation with his Darwin and Reply both having run fast times last time out. Reply finished down the field in a Premier Handicap won by Burn the Boats at this venue last month but that was a fast-run race. Preference is for Darwin however after his easy win at Naas in a quick time. This American import could turn out to be top class and should be followed until beaten in my opinion. Leitir Mor may be next best after these. 6.15 Darley Irish Oaks, Group 1, 3yo Fillies, 1m 4f: Ralph Beckett has entered his first and second in the Epsom Oaks (Talent and Secret Gesture) here. It will be interesting to see if Talent can follow up by adding to her victory there. Other English entries come from Clive Brittain (Masarah), David Simcock (Miss You Too) and Lady Cecil (Riposte). For Ireland Aidan O’Brien has four entries (Just Pretending, Magical Dream, Say and Venus de Milo). All look to be very capable fillies with Magical Dream perhaps having most to offer although Venus de Milo has yet to taste defeat. Entries from John Oxx (Tarana), Jim Bolger (Scintilulla) and Tommy Stack (Alive Alive Oh) complete a strong home contingent. However, the one that catches my eye from a very competitive field is the French filly Chicquita. Alain De Royer-Dupre’s inmate ran an absolute cracker of a race to finish second to the highly talented Treve in the French version of this classic. There she was held up in last place until asked for her effort late on. She couldn’t catch the impressive winner but stayed to get up for second in the last stride. The extra distance here will not go amiss and that race was run in a really fast time on good going. With Johnny Murtagh booked for the ride she will lack for nothing in assistance from the saddle and although she has yet to win a race she is my take to cause an upset here. Newbury: 2.05 “Choose EBF Nominated” Fillies’ Handicap, 3yo+, 0-100, 1m: Although James Fanshawe’s Ribbons is unbeaten and could be unexposed this looks to me to be a bit tougher than the handicaps she has been contesting and Michael Dods’ more experienced Odyssey can land her own hat-trick at the main expense of Subtle Knife, Arsaadi, Plover and Light up My Life. 2.40 Sharps Brewery Steventon Stakes, Listed, 3yo+, 1m 2f 6yds: Mark Johnston’s Maputo won well at Newmarket last week and would rate a big danger if turning out. However he may not run again so quickly and therefore the vote goes to John Gosden’s Questioning who may have most to fear from First Cornerstone and Reckoning. Besides the obvious Maputo others looking to have decent chances are Quick Wit and Elkaayed. 3.15 GT Exhibitions Hackwood Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 6f 8yds: Godolphin’s Lockwood ran a fine race in a quick time when finishing third to the improving French Navy at Windsor recently and deserves to get his head in front where it matters soon. Mass Rally may prove the biggest obstacle to that event but others in with major chances in an open event are: Mirza; Rex Imperator; Libranno; Wentworth; Intibaah; and Minalisa. 3.50 Weatherbys Super Sprint, 2yo, 5f 34yds:

Richard Hannon regularly “farms” this type of race but, on these terms, Richard Fahey’s Peniaphobia should have nothing to fear from Hannon’s Anticipated if a line through Extortionist proves good. At York in May Peniaphobia finished 2 ¼ lengths ahead of Extortionist (fourth) at level weights, with Haikbidiac in third place. Extortionist went on to land the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot with Anticipated back in third place. Now getting 4lbs from Anticipated, Peniaphobia should be able to win here. Apart from Anticipated, Haikbidiac could also prove dangerous along with Lexington Rose, Andhesontherun, Danish Duke and Meritocracy. Newmarket: 1.55 Poptelecom.co.uk Handicap, 3yo+, 0-105, 1m: Trail Blaze can conquer the opposition here. The principal dangers would seem to be Wentworth, Glen Moss, Windhoek, Masteroftherolls, Es Que Love (a good second at Newmarket last week), Snowboarder and Trade Commissioner. 2.25 Newsells Park Stud Stakes (Registered as The Aphrodite Stakes), Listed, 3yo+, Fillies & Mares, 1m 4f: Mick Channon’s filly Contradict gets the vote after finishing ninth to Pacific Rim in the Group 2 Prix de Malleret at Deauvile. That race was run in good time for the conditions and may prove stronger than the form of the opposition at this lower level. Lady Cecil’s Songbird is unbeaten and must rate a big danger along with Bolivia, Sound Hearts, Waila, Porcini and La Arenosa. Market Rasen: 2.55 Betfred Mobile Lotto Summer Hurdle (Handicap), Listed, 4yo+, 2m 1f: With all the entrants having recorded good speed figures last time out this sets a major poser. I reckon that almost any could win so I have resorted to the speed figure order last time out the top seven of which gives: Baccalaureate; War Singer; Tom Wade; Sea Lord; Barizan; Tzora; and Local Hero. 3.30 Betfred Summer Plate (Handicap Chase), Listed, 4yo+, 2m 6f 110yds: This another highly competitive race where I have followed the logic used for the previous hurdle race and plumped for: Woolcombe Folly; Kian’s Delight; Buck Mulligan; Bocciani; Donnas Palm; Finger Onthe Pulse; Lamboro Lad; Paddy the Hare; and Gentleman Anshan.

David Weir insists United’s pre-season preparations are heading in the right direction after Saturday’s 3-1 success over Bury at Gigg Lane on Saturday. Goals from Jasper Johns, Jamie Murphy and Stephen McGinn saw the Blades recover from a goal down to complete a third win in four friendlies to date. The Gaffer said the most pleasing aspect of the victory was upping the intensity of the performance, in particular developing the younger members of the squad. Weir remarked: “Being unbeaten is not the be all and end all, but winning games is always nice. The main aim is to get equal minutes into the players and thankfully, touch wood, we are avoiding injuries. “Until this game it has been purely a fitness exercise and to an extent that remains the priority, but also the football has been good, which is pleasing.” He added: “Of course, there is room for improvement; you would expect that at this stage in pre-season. It was a younger group in the firsthalf, but I want to get all the lads to the same fitness levels. “In the second-half we were more experienced and that told in the end, but the youngsters also acquitted themselves brilliantly.”

Liam Palmer is pleased with his career progress to date – but is now keen to move to the next level. That means regular first team football higher up the ladder having spent a successful season on loan with League 1 side Tranmere last time out. Palmer proved a popular figure at Prenton Park, impressing over the Pennines as he posted a near ever-present campaign. He said: “I really enjoyed my time at Tranmere and I’d like to think I made a good impression there. “I played a lot of games and that was where I needed to be at that stage of my career. “But we are heading into a new season now and my target is to break into the first team here.” Academy product Palmer, 21, signed a new contract at Hillsborough prior to extending his loan spell with Tranmere in January. And the midfielder, who filled in at right back on Saturday as the Owls beat Scunthorpe 1-0, was keen to secure his future in S6: “I signed for two years and that was important to me because everyone wants to know where their career is heading. “I am proud to play for Sheffield Wednesday and this club has all the potential to really go places. “Everyone is in good spirit in pre-season and we’re putting in a lot of hard work. “We’ve played two games, won them both and not conceded, so you can’t really ask for much more than that. “We’re here in Portugal now with two games against very different teams and we’re looking forward to the challenges ahead.’

How is the squad building for the new season going? “It’s going well; we are working hard to bring in some good players who will compliment the squad we already have. “It’s going to be a new challenge so we are trying to get a very fit and competitive squad ready for the start against Blackpool on August 3rd. “I know that Paul (Dickov) will deliver but we all have to have to be a little patient. I know fans are getting frustrated because things have not happened but I can promise that there is lots going on behind scenes. “I feel we will be a force to be reckoned with this coming season.” Does Paul give you a list of his targets? “Not really, the players we bring in are all down to Paul. He does approach us when he needs to do a deal - I try and assist him all I can. “I have a lot of contacts in football as does Paul, so we work together to get what we want. We are close to signing some very good players; Paul is working hard on that as we speak.” How close do you feel Paul is to having the squad he wants? “We are not far away; we already had some very good players from last season and we are working hard to add even more quality into what is already a fantastic squad. “If you go back one year, Dean (Saunders) only had about four contracted players at this point and we were all worried that we would not have a squad for the season. Look at what happened there! “I would like to remind the fans that last year we had fewer players and won the league; so please be patient as there is a lot going on. “Please assess where we are on the 3rd August against Blackpool; I feel you will all be satisfied.”

Rotherham United concluded their pre-season tour of Scotland with a convincing 4-1 victory over Ayr United, much to the delight of assistant manager Paul Raynor. After a draw at Greenock Morton and a victory over Livingston, the Millers displayed their most convincing performance yet at Somerset Park after a brace by Alex Revell, and further strikes from Mitch Rose and Ben Pringle. Raynor was pleased with the Millers performance, especially second half where the management team once again made 11 half-time changes. “It was another good workout, these are what these games are all about,” Raynor told www.themillers. co.uk “I thought that the first half was a little bit slow and laboured. I didn’t feel we moved the ball around quick enough in the first period, but we had a lot more penetration in the second half and I think that our superiority showed, and we were much more positive with our passing.” Raynor was complimentary about Revell’s display but also praised the service from Michael O’Connor and Ben Pringle which helped him bag a brace. “Alex is a great header of the ball and we know if we can get good quality into him in the right areas then he will score more goals like that,” added Raynor. “There was some good service into him in the second half and he did terrifically well with the headers.” Once again the Millers came through the game with no injury concerns, with Raynor very satisfied with their week north of the border. “It has been a tough week, the lads have worked very hard, three games in seven days is tough which is why we have tried to limit everyone to 45 minutes a game. “The fitness levels are really good and the pleasing thing is that bar one or two little knocks we have come through this unscathed. The lads have done well, it has been a good week of training, we have had some tough competitive games and an enjoyable week,” he concluded.

Speaking after scoring the third goal in the Blades 3-1 win at Gigg Lane, McGinn commented: “It is always nice to be winning matches and obviously scoring is a great feeling, but at this stage it means nothing. At the moment we are focusing on our fitness and learning how the manager wants us to play. “I am enjoying playing in front of the back four and alongside Michael (Doyle) and Kevin (McDonald), I am just trying to adapt to how the manager wants us to play. “Kevin can influence the game further forward and he can play passes that a lot of people don’t see.” McGinn added: “The heat of the last few weeks has really helped our fitness levels and now things will hot up as the season gets ever closer. “We are desperate for that first game and I can’t wait to get into the thick of the action at Bramall Lane.”

UNDER THE STARS LAUNCH NEW EVENT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Next Thursday 18th July, Under the Stars are hosting their first ever nightclub specifically for young people between 14-21 with a learning disability to come along and have a fantastic party. Under the Stars is a small social enterprise based in Sheffield who have been running nightclubs and music workshops for adults with learning disabilities successfully for over 6 years. It has long been Under the Stars dream (and that of their friends and supporters) to run a event for young people with learning difficulties. We will create a safe, supported alcohol free environment where young people can meet up with old friends, make new friends and dance the night away. The event will be held at Sheffield Hallam Students Union (formerly National Centre for Pop Music), on Paternoster Row, Sheffield from 7.00pm to 10.00pm. Tickets are £4 each. All of the DJ’s and bands that will be performing on the night are young people with a learning disability who have been learning new skills for the past six months in order to bring you a brilliant night. One of our young bands ‘The Neanderthals’ are a

group of exceptional youngsters from Bents Green school. They have written all their own songs and learnt how to play their instruments to a high standard that is not to be missed. You can also catch the Neanderthals at the Tramlines Peace Garden stage next Sunday 21st July. We will be providing a separate relaxing and quiet ‘chill out space’ for supporting adults, so you can come along to the event without having to be in the main disco area. We have invited a range of the major support services from the city for you to talk to about your children as they become adults, including Shefﬁeld Mencap and the Shefﬁeld Carers Centre, and we are sure you will also meet up with people that you know at the event. We really hope you can join us for what is sure to be a fun evening. Schools nearly out for summer so dress to impress and we will see you there! Latest Farm Lottery Winner Sharon Claxton is the latest lucky winner of Heeley City Farm’s Lottery, picking up a cheque for £43.20! The lottery was set up earlier this year to raise vital funds for the Farm – Heeley City Farm is an independent charity and we need to raise money to keep our projects going and animals fed; annually this is approx £900,000. The lottery is just £4 per month to join that’s a £1 a week! 40% of the money which is collected (after boring things like bank charges

have been taken off) goes straight to the Farm and 60% is given in prize money to a randomly selected number in each monthly draw. To get your number all you need to do is request a form, ﬁll in your details and return it to the Farm – as long as your £4 reaches us by the 1st of each month your number will be entered in to each monthly draw. Celebration of Success Firth Park Community Allotment had its annual celebration event at the beginning of June. Firth Park is one of the Farm’s ﬂagship Local Food Growing projects and is supported by the Big Lottery Local Food Fund. It is a wonderful, secret haven near the centre of the busy shopping area and once through the gate, visitors to the site are met with an array of colourful decorations, plants and vegetables growing in every available space and, most importantly, children busy with the business of growing things. Dot Rodman the lead local food growing worker at Firth Park organises the yearly event and invited volunteers and

children who use the site regularly, and their families, to say thank you for all their hard work and support in making the allotment a success. Although it was an overcast day the rain stayed away and lots of children attended to take part in the activities on offer. Everyone who attended brought some food to share; it was a wonderful spread which included homemade soup brought by Tradebase and freshly harvested salads and peas in their pods from the allotment. Activities for all the family included pea planting, led by Danny Clayton of SureStart, and planting a bed up using the 3 sisters system; sweet corn is surrounded by beans and then pumpkins. ‘It’s a traditional system’ explained Vicky Cooper, Farm Food Growing Worker, ‘all the plants are supposed to support each other as they grow and complement each other. We’ll see if it works!’ Vicky was helped by Shaymar who is 9 years & 2 months old and who attends sessions in the allotment in the school holidays with his childminder. ‘Sweet corn is my favourite to grow’ he beamed. ‘They taste really good’ Shaymar and other children on the plot for the

day got stuck in to planting the bed up and were looking forward to harvesting the crops later in the year. Matt Kershaw the Farm’s composting worker was on hand to give advice and demonstrations about home composting and put on a bug hunting activity for the little ones. Nikki from The Secret Cake Club offered up the chance for children to make cinnamon dough sticks to bake over a BBQ and make up some fresh fruit kebabs. Nikki often visits the allotment offering cooking sessions which have included a series of Dads Cooking workshops and other food related activities for kids. Other activities included making clay model creatures, supervised by Shelly Davies and Sharon Smith from the Farm’s Energy Centre, and face painting. Alan Skelton, a ﬁrst time visitor who came to get some composting advice said ’Thanks to Dot for a very clear and helpful introduction to the site; the allotment was looking fantastic! I learned a lot about composting from Matt and by actually working on some compost at different stages of

of hunting and an eventful trip to Penrith which ended in Shefﬁeld with one of our goats escaping to a local garden on nearby Olive Grove Road late at night we now have four beautiful nanny goats, fully registered and from good pedigree lines. This year we have had our ﬁrst lot of pedigree kids, eight in total. Our space is limited so we are keeping the best nanny and the others are going to a goat conservation project in the Lake District along with two Bagot goats, the other native rare goat breed in the country. We have dreams of re-entering the show ring again so watch this space!

After two years of hard work the Farm was ﬁnally awarded Rare Breed Farm Park status in 2011 meaning we were ofﬁcially helping to protect rare native farm animal breeds. We have always kept goats; they are inquisitive, friendly and entertaining making them ideal animals for visitors to get up close to. In previous years, we had focused on British Dairy breeds and used to be regulars on the show circuit – in fact old hands at the farm still proudly tell of our British Saanen, Layla, winning best in show at Harthill Carnival in 1989.

When the ball started rolling with the rare breed application we needed to step back and assess which of our animals would fit into the rare breed criteria. Soay sheep, although not the friendliest, are a good choice of sheep for an area such as ours with poor grazing; the house rubble from the clearance of the land is only just below the top soil and it affects the quality of our grazing. Our flock of around ten Soays can graze all year round without causing too much damage. The ewes are good lambers and they very rarely seem to get ill or need much extra feed during the winter. Their fleece is “plucked” rather than needing to be shorn, again making them an easy sheep to keep. This year sees the first lot of lambs from our newest “stud”, the beautiful piebald Soay ram, Hercules, from the Backforest flock. We did have a couple of Golden Guernsey nanny goats already, which, although not pedigree registered, gave us the knowledge of what a lovely breed they are. After a lot

Flower Frenzy

Did you know, The Garden Centre at Heeley City Farm is completely peat free! At this time of year the centre is packed with plants grown on site, in full bloom and Sharon and her volunteers are busy making orders for hanging baskets. We sell to the local community to raise vital funds for the Farm and the centre also provides adults with learning disabilities with an opportunity to gain work experience and training. Star Volunteer Our star volunteer for this edition of the newsletter is Tony Muscoe. Tony has only been with us since the beginning of May this year but he is proving to be a bit of a legend already! He helps Sharon in the Garden Centre looking after the plants and mixing compost up and says, ‘I love helping out at the Farm and want to do more hours here’. He especially likes it because Sharon, the Garden Centre supervisor, looks after him so well and makes him cups of tea. We’ve chosen him because he always has a smile for everyone and at the recent Heeley Festival he raised £144.13 in donations for us completely under his own initiative, he turned up on the day and offered to help! We appreciate what our volunteers do for us; we couldn’t offer many of the services that we do without their input. Thank you Tony, you are fantastic!

WHAT WE DO

For those of you who’ve never been to the Farm, not visited for years or who aren’t sure what we do here’s a bit about what a brilliant place it is! We are a 4 acre mini rare breeds urban Farm just outside the centre of Shefﬁeld and we are an independent charity. If you know about us then you will know about our farm animals but we do so much more than that. We provide alternative education for hundreds of school children every year as well as volunteering positions at weekends for local youngsters (there is a waiting list!). We have supported learning places here for adults with disabilities and learning difﬁculties providing work experience and a support network in our community café The Farm Kitchen, Small Animal House, Garden Centre and other activities. We offer courses in conservation skills for young adults and unemployed people as well as providing hundreds of volunteering opportunities every year. We have heritage and archaeology projects

including community digs on the Farm site. The Energy Centre here promotes alternative energy sources and offers help to those experiencing fuel poverty such as young families and the over 50s. As well as all that we manage or co manage nearly 30 food growing sites across Shefﬁeld including Wortley Hall Walled Kitchen Garden, Meersbrook Park Walled Garden, Firth Park Community Allotment and Norfolk Park Community Garden and we work with schools to promote food growing too! Summer Forest School Fun Come to the woods and play this Summer! During the summer school holidays we will be playing and making things in the Roundhouse Woodlands and we need your help. We will be making games, printing and painting. Making a mud kitchen (to cook mud pies in!), cooking on a campﬁre and making HUGE recycled crayons. That is the bit we need your help with. If you have any old wax crayons or broken bits, bring them along and we will turn them into brand new crayons to draw with. The Summer is nearly here and we will see you soon! Heeley Health Walk

Val Miles one of our volunteer health champions, is leading a new health walk which started on Thursday 27th June. Val, who has been volunteering at the Farm for a few years now, is helping people to be more active, make new friends - which is one of the most important factors for good health, get ﬁt and see what sights Heeley has to offer. The hour long walks take in the Farm,

the Millennium Park and local landmarks and the fantastic views across the city! Walkers meet by the duck pond for a 9.45am start – the walk lasts roughly an hour and ﬁnishes back at the Farm at 10.45 approx. Until the end of July all participants get a FREE cuppa! All ages are welcome; it’s suitable for buggies and those with a limited mobility. Come and get the

Staff Profile Bob Lister has been running our supported learning woodwork sessions at Heeley City Farm for nine years and also contributes towards repairs and helping with maintenance around the Farm. His post covers a wide variety of tasks which include making and reconditioning small and large animal hutches and enclosures, some to sell, for the most part using materials which are recycled. Bob has always enjoyed using his skills to get creative and enjoys bringing new designs to life; his team are making pot holders and stands right now for big terracotta pots so they can be sold to the public through the Garden Centre to raise money. He also does all the Farm’s deliveries; so if you order something for delivery you’ll get to meet him! Bob has brought a lot of knowledge to the Farm gained through previous employment and education. He was an electrician for twenty years until being made redundant and also did a two year course in woodwork and joinery. He has also worked for Sheffield Community Transport working with people with disabilities and has done volunteer work. When Bob wants to relax he listens to Pink Floyd and also takes his twenty four foot cruiser down the river Trent and the canals.

10am - 4pm Reception Classroom Repair Sheffield are holding another Repair Café at the Farm - the antidote to our throw away society! Do you have something which needs fixing but you don’t know how? Come along to the Repair Café and ask the fixers to show you how. Are you a fixer yourself? We’d love you to come along and share your knowledge with everyone. Our big annual Autumn event with lots of fun for all the family! Celebrate the harvesting season; do you have bushy brassicas or potatoes to be proud of? As well as the Produce Show we’ll have craft, gift, community and food stalls, entertainment and children’s activities, face painting and glitter tattoos and it’s FREE to get in. Make Do and Mend Sewing Class

Thursday 26th September 6.30pm – 8.30pm Reception Classroom £10 per person

Have you bought a sewing machine intending to make your own clothes and do your own repairs and then come apart at the seams at the prospect of actually using it? Then this is the perfect workshop for you! Our instructor Jen Barnard will show you some sewing machine basics and then demonstrate zip replacements and how to re sew hems and seams. There are 10 places available so book early to avoid disappointment – it’s a snip at £10. We have a few machines to use but advise bringing your own to practise on. Spence of Chapletown who donated rocks from her garden via Freecycle which we will use in the continuing landscaping improvements to the duck pond area. Local company Hargreaves donated Tractor tyres to the Farm and these are already being put to good use round the Farm – two have been installed as a ‘climbing frame’ for the goats! News from the Small Animal House

The Small Animal House at Heeley City Farm has two new arrivals - stick insects! The giant spinney stick insects were bought from Snakes and Adders and are the ﬁrst stick insects to live at the Farm for a while. They are deﬁnitely a talking point amongst visitors and clients at the Farm. ‘We’ve had mixed reactions from the group’ said Eddie Gill a Senior Support Worker with the Learning Disabilities group, ‘it’s love them or loathe them!’ If you would like to see the new insects the best times to visit the Small Animal House is between 11 – 3 daily; however it is best to ring and check before your visit to make sure no group visits have been booked.
