Not surprisingly, many people turned out for the party for this popular couple, where there was a superb hog roast and DJ’d very well by my pal David Hayes, who unsuccessfully kept inviting me up to sing. The pub trade is very hard at the moment and the recent hot spell has not improved matters with many people taking advantage of cheap supermarket booze whilst having barbecues at home. Trade in this climate has to be earned, by using top entertainment. My local, the Victoria in Dronfield, is now busy after a great re-furbishment. Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man to fish, and he will bore you to death with fishing stories.

Tramlines, the UK’s biggest inner-city festival has come to an end completing its fifth successful year. Thousands of festival goers travelled from all over the UK to attend the three day festival held across four outdoors stages and over 60 venues throughout Sheffield from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 July. Event organisers were pleased with the attendance although final ticket sales are still to be announced. For the first time since its conception, Tramlines sold tickets to the festival after losing headline sponsor Nokia and Council funding cuts. Day tickets were sold at just £6 per day and £15 for advanced weekend tickets. Weekend advance tickets sold out in advance along with Friday and Saturday day tickets totalling in excess of 18,500. Spirits were high across the festival as event goers enjoyed street theatre at Barker’s Pool, acoustic sessions on board the Busker’s Bus and live music at the Main Stage on Devonshire Green amongst hundreds of other activities. Over 500 artists played at Tramlines 2013 including Lianne La Havas, Toddla T Sound, The Selecter, B. Traits, Theo Parrish, New Young Pony Club, Shangaan Electro, Fenech Soler, Slow Club, Jim Jones Revue, The Invisible, 2.54, Friends, Rolo Tomassi and Dutch Uncles. No major incidents relating to the festival have been reported and initial reports from core venues have been positive. Festival Director Sarah Nulty said: “A huge thank you to everyone who attended and made it a truly wonderful event. The fantastic weather on Friday set everyone in a great mood which lasted across the site all weekend. Musically it was a great year for Tramlines with so many talented artists on the bill. Through Tramlines we get to showcase exactly what Sheffield has to offer and we’re very proud of it.” For festival highlights and exclusive interviews visit Tramlines TV on YouTube www.youtube. com/tramlinesfestival

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Psychic Protection I am saddened by the amount of people who use a Ouija board and have no idea that they should protect themselves from roaming spirits. The people I read for are assured that no negative spirits will be permitted to enter the session. My mantra is to ‘protect myself and my client, and the premises where the reading is taking place.’ I use sage snuffers (sage leaves and lavender tied together and lit) to cleanse the negative energies. If you are unable to get hold of a snuffer use sage incense as it can also be very effective. Psychic protection is considered to be very important, particularly when contacting spirits and channelling or during an out of body experience, as it is vital that you avoid absorption of dark entities. I always have crystals close by. The main ones I use are black tourmaline, amber, smokey quartz and lapis lazuli. These crystals can also be used in ‘grounding’ which is the best form of psychic protection, especially when assisted by deep breathing from the belly and a connection to Mother Earth.

A Positive Attitude Fear, negative beliefs and repressed feelings can stop us from feeling happy and safe. Negative thoughts attract negative energy and consequently it is important to focus on the best times in your life and try to re-create those happy feelings. It is important to protect yourself whenever you want to develop or use your psychic abilities. When you first start to work on your psychic abilities you will need your own Gate Keeper to filter out unwelcome spirits. In time you will tune into your own Spirit Guides but without The Protective Light Bubble experience mischievous spirits may be able to This universal psychic protection device uses fool you. ʻSHEFFIELD ON THE MOVEʼ PUBLIC MEETING Following the successful public forum held in our Town Hall on 25 April, we have been informed of a meeting where a number of significant developments in the transport field will be discussed. The meeting called ‘Sheffield on the Move’ will be held on Thursday 25 July at 5.30pm at Sheffield Town Hall in the Reception Room. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available from 5pm. The main items to be discussed are: • Sheffield Council Transport Vision – John Bann, Head of Transport, Traffic and Parking Services will outline the renewed Transport Vision. Followed by discussion. • Sheffield Bus Partnership -we will hear the latest on how the Partnership is performing as it starts to approach its first anniversary • City Centre Masterplan refresh – Simon Ogden, Head of City Regeneration, will present on transport aspects of the Masterplan. Short notice I know, but we only knew late last week! We have placed the comprehensive paperwork that was sent with this notice on our website.

UPDATE ON SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA AT BOLE HILL VIEW

We have received a letter from Communities Commissioning Service at Sheffield City Council providing us with an update on the planned closure of Bole Hill View. At the time Sheffield 50+ wrote to complain at this closure in October last year and we have been closely monitoring developments as they progress. The closure was planned for March 2014, but has now been brought forward to October 2013. We are grateful to the Council officers for keeping us abreast of developments. The letter states that this earlier closure date is because many of the people who use the centre have now made alternative arrangements. They add that they are working with their clients on an individual basis to ensure a continued level of support. Work is underway to develop and improve the facilities at the Hurlfield View Centre where some people who used the Bolehill centre are now accessing services. The Council have also made an arrangement with Sheffcare for ‘a smaller block’ of pre bookable beds available from June to March 2014 to help with short term and respite care for those with a diagnosis of dementia. These 5 beds in specialist dementia homes are at Paddock Hill (3 beds) and Deerlands Avenue (2 beds). Bookings can be made direct to Sheffcare on 0114 239 1449 or 221 3258 respectively. If you have any questions regarding this provision please contact Sharon Marriott or Steve Jakeman on 0114 273 6815.

SHEFFIELD 50+ NEEDS YOU! We are looking for volunteers to work in our city centre office one or two days a week. You do not have to be over 50 just willing to help and support this organisation, its aims and mission. Do get in touch if you are interested. We are currently over 2400 members strong but wish to develop a stronger voice for people over 50 living in Sheffield. Membership is free and for life so why not join us! More information is available on our website or from Julie in our office.

NEWS FROM SHEFFIELD CLINICAL COMMISSIONING GROUP (CCG) Patients and carers were given the chance to tell local NHS leaders how they want to be involved in shaping healthcare in Sheffield at an event this month. The “grassroots involvement” event was organised by NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group – the new organisation tasked with planning and buying health services for the people of Sheffield. Dr Ted Turner, an elected member of the commissioning group’s governing body and GP at Shiregreen Medical Centre, gave an overview of what the new organisation is all about. But the main aim of the day was to find ways of making sure people were at the heart of decisions about healthcare. Dr Turner said: “The commissioning group is led by GPs, who listen to their patients every day and can bring that valuable knowledge into the planning and buying of health services for Sheffield communities – but we need to hear everyone’s voice. This event was part of making sure that happens.” Tim Furness, the commissioning group’s Director of business planning and partnerships, said: “The involvement of patients, public and communities is a key priority for us- we are committed to seeking people’s views to help shape the services we commission. “The day produced lots of ideas – for example making more use of social media, targeting young people and making sure we get out and about in the community and explain who we are and what we do. “Our message to Sheffield people is that we want to make it easy for people to get involved in our work – so please take that step and help us plan for the future.” Do you feel involved in shaping healthcare in Sheffield? Do you want to be? If you have any comment about this do contact Sheffield 50+.

AGE UK SHEFFIELD ENCOURAGES CONSUMERS TO CONSIDER FUNERAL PLANNING It’s something that no-one likes to think about but Age UK Funeral Plans have launched a reward scheme to help encourage older people to consider funeral planning. While some people find it difficult to think about, the reality is that funeral costs have continued to rise over the last few years and a funeral plan is a useful way of protecting from future cost increases – by paying for cremation funeral costs at today’s prices. Charlotte Davenport, Supervisor of Age UK Sheffield, said: “Planning your funeral in advance may sound like an unusual item to tick off on your to-do list but being organised can actually save a lot of unnecessary strain in the future. That’s why we are keen for people to consider this. “So why not pop in to see us to talk about your requirements - whether that be home,

car or travel insurance - and if you take out an insurance policy with us or switch your energy to us before the end of August, then you will also be offered a £20 voucher off the cost of a Funeral Plan. The voucher can also be passed to friends or family.” All new and renewing insurance and energy customers will be offered a £20 Funeral Plan discount when they visit local trading offices of Age UK Enterprises, which offers an array of products designed around the needs of those in later life. Age UK Funeral Plans are provided in association with Dignity Caring Funeral Services. Age UK’s Funeral Plans enable people to fix the cost of a cremation funeral at today’s prices and remove the worry about rising costs. They are designed specifically for those in later life and offer three different

plans and flexible payment methods to suit different requirements. The Age UK Funeral Plan guarantees that the cremation funeral costs covered by the plan are met in full and at today’s prices, meaning less worry and financial strain for all involved. Terms and conditions for the discount voucher scheme: · Only one voucher may be used per Plan purchased. However, more than one voucher may be earned by customers who buy or renew more than one product in a local participating Age UK before the end of August 2013 . No cash value to the vouchers. · The vouchers are valid until 31st December 2013. We reserve the right to vary, withdraw or extend this offer at any time. For further information about the Age UK Funeral Plan voucher please call 0114 253 6960 or pop into Age UK Sheffield, 44 Castle Square, Sheffield S1 2GF.

SHEFFIELD CHARITY WALK BACKS APPEAL The Sick Children's Trust's sponsored walk around Weston Park in Sheffield has raised £700 for the charity's Branching Out Appeal. Held on Sunday 23 June, staff from the charity joined families who have used its existing Treetop House in Sheffield to take in all the beautiful sights and sounds of the park for a good cause. The money raised will go towards the charity's fundraising appeal to build a new 11 bedroom 'Home from Home' at Sheffield Children's Hospital where parents can stay free of charge whilst their child is being treated. It is hoped to be open by late 2013. Ann Wyatt, house manager at Treetop House said: "This is the fourth year we have organised the walk so are delighted that it has raised so much and everyone is still keen to show their support for us. Although it rained everyone really enjoyed themselves. "We are in the last few months of our appeal and

11

are not far off the fundraising target so little events like this can make all the difference to us reaching our goal so I must say a big thank you to everyone who came along on the day." The Sick Children's Trust has eight ‘Homes from Home' around the UK, including Treetop House in Sheffield, which provide free accommodation to families of sick children being treated in hospital. If you'd like to get involved in the Branching Out - growing our support for families in Sheffield Appeal please visit www.sickchildrenstrust.org

DOUBLE CELEBRATION AT THE DUSTY MILLER VOICE OF THE There’s been a double celebration this week at the Dusty Miller in Barlborough as they celebrated their 37th anniversary at the Derbyshire venue with a grand charity night as well as receiving a new accolade for their accommodation. In 1976 current Licensee Adrian Fazakerley’s parents Peter & Audrey took control of the Dusty Miller as part of their pub group with Adrian joining the family business in 1981 at the tender age of 17. In 1996 Adrian and his brother Nigel started to concentrate on and develop the Dusty Miller adding 6 En-Suite bedrooms as well as

serving up delicious home cooked food and staging some the area’s best live music nights. Last week the Dusty Miller celebrated adding a AA - 3AAA award for their B&B facilities to the 3 star rating they already display from the Tourist Board. The AA rating is judged on an all round assessment of the premises and the 3AAA is testament to the continuing improvements made by Adrian and his team. The good news continued with a special charity party held last Friday (19th) celebrating 37 years of the Fazakerley family’s ownership of the Dusty Miller which raised £360 which is to be

shared equally between the Weston Park Cancer Charity and Yorkshire Air Ambulance charities. Here at The Mercury we have had a long and successful relationship

Licensee Adrian stands proudly with the Dusty Miller’s new AA 3AAA rating plaque

with everyone at the Dusty Miller and we’d like to congratulate Adrian and his team on their recent success and wish them well for the future.

Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and all of the money required to run the service is raised by our volunteers. CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

I have had to write far too often about clubs that close and the sadness that brings. I’ve quoted too many club members in a state of shock saying they don’t know what they will do without their club. Often the suddenness of it all is remarked upon: it all happens very quickly even when a club has been in a long slow decline. The boarded up windows and padlocked gates seem to come overnight. One minute you are having a pint in company of friends, the next you are locked out. I have felt upset every time I have reported a closure. And now the one I have been dreading perhaps the most has happened. The club I grew up with, the Canley Social in Coventry, just across the street from my family home, has now suffered this awful fate. It’s been boarded up for two weeks now. I looked at the life in there just before it was shut: people playing bingo, doing Karaoke, playing snooker, football and bowls teams having their games on the well-equipped sports grounds. Now all I see the site of a deserted building looking like a prison. The story of this club is illustrative of hundreds of others so I hope readers will indulge me in writing about this over two weeks. The Canley Social Club and Institute was founded In the late 1940s by a group of local men who wanted a social venue on the new post-war council estate. Men like my father. Plans were drawn up, money borrowed from the council and the plot of land across the street from my house provided by the council soon had a basic club building on it- much of the work done by members themselves. The committee, headed by the formidable Jimmy Cooke, who went on to be a long-standing and influential CIU National Executive member, applied to affiliate to the CIU in 1950. By the time I came along, the club had a few rooms, including a temporary wooden one that lasted for ten years. There was a billiards room for the men a lounge where free and easies, piano sing-alongs and housey housey could be enjoyed. It soon had successful teams for all the usual games. The club quickly gained a good reputation within the CIU as well as the local area and grew size over the decades.

RECKLESS LOVE

If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk

live INTERVIEW

Words by KT Evans

Where glam rock and merry metal meet, there could only ever be one outcome; Reckless Love. Famed for their outlandish stage personas, monster riffs and enviable updos, the four piece Finnish pack are returning this Autumn with their third studio album ‘Spirit’ alongside a full UK headline tour…prepare the hairspray. Self-titling themselves as “…meat and veg rock…” (yep, us neither) Reckless Love will only ever adhere to their central mantra of having the best time possible. Whether it be performing in their native Finland to tens of thousands of people or a smaller intimate show across the pond, frontman Olli Herman oozes passion whilst discussing the groups anticipated new album, ‘Spirit’. Set for release on 2nd September in the UK, if their first single ‘Night On Fire’ is anything to go by, we suggest you buckle up for the roller coaster event of the year. “We’ve returned back to our metal roots on this new album. Our previous album showed our pop side, and although we’ve still kept quite a lot of that pop edge, the new record is more metal and raw. We’re strongly influenced by our Big 3…Van Halen, Kiss and Def Leppard in ‘Spirit’ but you can also hear plenty of Metallica riffage with a Judas Priest vibe.” But could drawing in so many influences from a variety of metal and rock bands result in a loss of personal identity for Reckless Love? Wrong. With each and every track off the bands back catalogue an individual dedication to the Gods of rock, Olli is keen to emphasise the groups dedicated pathway to Glam metal mecca. “We’ve grown as musicians, but we’ve also grown older ourselves. Animal Attraction (the group’s 2011 second studio album which landed the band is the legendary hall of musical fame) wasn’t titled that way for nothing…but this time round our subjects have changed and we really believe we’ve captured the spirit and fire of Reckless Love now in the new album. We don’t know where we’re going, but we can’t wait to get there…” As with any new album, you always have your favourites right? Whether it be the lead single off a group’s new release, or a relatively undiscovered album track which safeguards a bands authenticity, Olli takes a moment to deliver the verdict on his particular favourite belter from the new recordings. “There’s a song off the album titled ‘Metal Ass’ which is written by our bassist, I really love that one. I’ve written nearly all the lyrics for ‘Spirit,’ but that track just felt right for us all. It sounds cheesy but all the tracks on the album are like our babies, we really can’t pick!” In typical Reckless Love style, Olli also goes onto explain their somewhat more unusual take of tipping their caps to their favourite groups. If you’ve ever seen the four piece live, you’ll understand us when we say that Olli and co really do not do things by halves…and if you’ve never witnessed the ferocity of such a powerful pack, stay tuned. “We also have a song called ‘I Love Heavy Metal’ on the album,” (pause for a lengthy belly laugh) “The lyrics go ‘I can’t get enough ‘til the day

I die’ so within the song we chant our favourite song titles, band names etc., all our favourites. I think fans are going to like that one!” If Andrew WK thinks he can party hard, he clearly hasn’t met the boys of Reckless Love then…hold on, did we just strike up a challenge right there?! Confirming their second single to be ‘So Happy I Could Die,’ we have yet to see a video for the track although from the excitement bubbling up from Olli, it may well be a pretty spectacular show of events indeed. “The new single is an up-tempo, rock ‘n’ roll tune. We wanted to party the hell out of it, to do whatever we do when we’re on stage. This song is a straight forward rock song, it yells feeling and motion which is what we do whilst on stage…it’ll just make you smile!” And performing live is exactly what they do to their absolute best efforts. Never one to keep his shirt on throughout an hour or so long set (ladies – cue eye candy…) Olli takes on the form of puppet master to command his audience with eye-watering effect. Having recently announced a full UK headline tour for October 2013, to include performances at Newcastle 02 Academy, The Fleece in Bristol, Leeds Students University and rounding off at 02 Academy Islington London, rest assured Reckless Love aren’t going to let anybody down. “We’re all really looking forward to the UK tour. Every single time we go there, it gives us such a great pleasure to see people sing along to our tracks word for word. You guys are loyal as hell is amazing!” The group’s last expedition to play a full British tour came last Autumn however this time round will see the band armed with a brand new album along with being fresh out of a few months well deserved holiday. “Until the UK shows, we’re literally taking a break from touring for a while. When we released our very first album (self-titled album released in 2010 which hit number 13 in the Official Finland charts) we were on the road for about two and a half years. We had to record ‘Animal Attraction’ whilst we were touring, so this time round we’ve had a lot more time to focus on the album. We’re starting the tour off gradually in Finland, with one or two festivals here in there in August then we fully begin in September…all we want to do is entertain with an emphasis on loud, heavy metal!” ‘Spirit’ is released on Spinefarm Records on 2nd September 2013. See www.recklesslove.com for full tour dates.

a little bizarre, especially when he’s zipping off to his private bathroom at the Houses of Parliament to fap off to the latest issue of Tory Twangers or Coalition Cream Pies! by stuart renton That said, it really wouldn’t be the first time It’s a mixed news bag this week. The an MP has been caught making a mess over country’s going bankrupt, there are racial a massive boob. In fact, when asked their killings the press isn’t disclosing, the standpoint on porn, most MPs were entirely Government is little more than a bunch in favour, especially when charging it to their of flim-flam artists with their heads in the sand, we’re all about to be killed by global expenses accounts (although Jacqui Smith will fumble her way through an excuse that warming and, shockingly, the Krankies her husband was doing research on the pearl are somehow still allowed to perform in necklace she wanted for her birthday). Sadly, public… yet the headline on everyone’s mate, you won’t find jewellery on Channel lips is the royal baby. 269 (although you might find a well fingered That’s right, the ‘royal chambers’ have ring or two). finally opened and there’s a new addition And that’s about it for this week. I need to to the family no one cares about. Now I mention Tipping Point, which frankly leaves might be dead inside, but is it just me or is this absolutely no news to anyone? I mean, me speechless (especially as it’s now into people might have cared about this kind of its third season). I thought TV could sink no event a hundred years ago when people didn’t lower than Splash, but this is all the worst have lives (or Internet porn), but the whole parts of Splash stretched out into an hour monarchy is such an antiquated concept, long fiasco of epic proportions. I can only I’m surprised it hasn’t been disbanded and assume TV producers have some kind of bet Buckingham Palace sold and turned into as to who can get the worst possible load of a Starbucks! In this age of austerity it’s toss on our screens for the longest, and if something to pull the nation together, I that’s the case then the BBC is winning with suppose. Tipping Point and the truly offensively bad, And speaking of pulling the nation… Don’t Scare the Hare. Honestly, I fear for the Supreme Dunderhead and current Prime sanity (and IQ) of the UK with shows like Minister, David Cameron, has vowed to this around. What next, Guess the Name of end Internet porn in the UK and frankly I’m the Royal Baby? A show over twelve weeks baffled by this. Not only does Internet porn where zelebrities take turns to guess the name keep a veritable army of women happy at of the royal sprog? I vouch for Bernard. Or, night (they don’t have to fake headaches failing that, I hope they go all artsy with Oink or anything else), but it’s the very reason Oink Spooge-Razor Cinnamon Windsor. the internet was created (well, that and Facebook). Deprived of Internet porn online Yeah. That pretty much rolls off the tongue, usage would fall by ninety eight per cent to doesn’t it? be accessed solely by academics, geeks and people wanting to look at cute pictures of cats (which is in stark contrast to the kind of pussy most people currently go online to enjoy). Sure, the ease in which children can get access to porn is alarming as they can see a tit online in approximately ten seconds (and I’m not taking about Googling the current birds of South Yorkshire) and something definitely needs to be done about that, but one could easily say little Jonny will get access to porn anyway (when we were kids it was naughty magazines in the woods), so this is hardly anything new or surprising and this solemn vow by the PM to end porn is frankly Taking place this weekend just a couple of hours outside Sheffield against the beautiful backdrop of the Lake District Kendal Calling returns for the 7th consectutive year with it’s usual eclectic mix of artists spread across 8 performance stages. The award winning, independent festival has an intentionally small capacity (with only 50 tickets left at the time of going to press!) making sure the crowd can easily move around the venue without the monotony of spending hours queing for the different arenas and indeed a drink. This doesn’t however mean the festival doesn’t attract big name artists with previous headliners Calvin Harris, Pendulum and last year Dizzee Rascal belting out their sounds over rolling Cumbrian countryside and 2013 is no different with a heady mix of new and retro artists making up the three day lineup. The main stage is headlined this year by a trio UK old school heavyweights with a dash of American Hip-hop royalty thrown in for good measure. Friday night sees Basement Jaxx (Glastonbury headliners 9 years ago) bring their unique festival

brand of house and dance to the main stage with U.S. Hip Hop pioneers Public Enemy providing the high octane warm up. Saturday takes a more Indie approach with The Charlatans and Ash bringing the 90s anthems followed on Sunday by even more Indie stalwarts as Primal Scream close the weekend. As well as the headline acts on the main stage Kendal Calling also showcases a wide range of genres and styles across it’s eight stages ranging from the southern American twang of Seasick Steve to the high tempo, bass heavy beats of Loadstar and Roni Size. With three days of music and activities designed to cater for festival goers ranging from stag parties to families Kendal Calling really is one of the highlights of the festival season with a great atmosphere without the neeed for a sherpa to navigate the site. FISH O’MANIA!!!!! What a result for Jamie Hughes who took home the winners trophy and a cheque for an amazing £30,000 after a hard fought match. In fairness, as I watched from the bankside on Arena Pool (otherwise known as the ‘Wok’ after the blistering temperatures on Saturday!) Jamie started well and only improved, leading the weigh in for hour after hour until the final klaxon...a very well fished match and well deserved victory! Credit must go to all anglers, especially Gavin Millis who stuck it out despite not catching a single fish until the final half hour; must have been tough going with the camera on him throughout.....talk about pressure! So what else went on at Cudmore Fishery where the event was held? A huge reduction in trade stands meant fewer bargains, but such was the interest in the main event, I didn’t really notice a drop in visitor numbers. Dragon Carp, Fishing Republic and Vale Royal Angling Centre all had some bargains on the day which saw many visitors happy, the ice cream van did a roaring trade, and the bar? Well, you couldn’t get near it! It was fantastic to see a number of angling coaches prepared to give up their time to offer ‘taster sessions’ for novices and uninitiated anglers. I spoke to many youngsters who had caught their first fish and enjoyed the delights of watching a dipping float, or a twitching tip, shipping the pole or casting a waggler under the watchful eye of local experts and big name anglers; new blood in angling is always welcome and events like this do much to encourage it.... From a personal perspective, I caught up with Marukyu Product Development Manager Roy Marlow and Kev Russell who had set up their pitch outside the lakeside lodge to catch anglers as they passed on the way to a bacon sandwich in the cafeteria. The Marukyu stand was busy all day and as interested anglers found out more about some of the newest Marukyu product releases, the sales went mad! By mid afternoon, there was hardly anything left and arrangements had to be made to resupply. Sunday followed in much the same vein with huge amounts of product sold and new converts to Marukyu made.... I also met well known ex-Korda carper Adam Penning for the first time; it’s always nice to meet someone who is established in the angling media circus and after a brief chat, I watched as he held court with several anglers keen to learn his secrets. Adam was extremely approachable and took time to ensure every angler who made an appointment with him took some knowledge with them to improve their own skills....he caught some fish too! Overall, a superb day which I really enjoyed and full credit must go to all anglers, Frank, Vic and all the team at Cudmore Fisheries who made it such a great success; they even sorted the weather this year, it usually rains, but not this time!!

With the weather looking unpredictable for the remainder of the week ground conditions could play a huge part in this weekend’s proceedings. If the rains come then some of the recent form might be less reliable than would otherwise have been the case. Having said that the racing does look appetising and the top race of the day is an excellent renewal of the King George at Ascot. York is the TV supporting meeting and has a Group 2 contest as its best race. Ascot: 2.05 Princess Margaret Juddmonte Stakes, Group 3, 2yo Fillies, 6f: This is a very interesting and competitive event. On my figures there is not very much between many of the runners. Clive Cox’s Beldale Memory carries my top rating but ran quite unexpectedly poorly at Royal Ascot on good/firm ground. If the ground turns out to have more cut on Saturday she could possibly win quite easily. Second top in my ratings, and with the best last time out figure, is David Brown’s Wind Fire. Currently Jamie Spencer is shown as the jockey for both of these so which one he chooses could be significant. Lost in the Desert also has a good last time out figure, along with the unbeaten and unexposed Wee Jean. Queen Catrine and Fig Roll are next best on last time out performances but there are plenty of others close behind, including Along Again, Chutney, Chroussa, Princess Noor and Qawaasem. In the hope that the ground comes up with some cut I am going to forgive the Royal Ascot run and give the vote to Beldale Memory. Wind Fire is my clear second best, followed by Lost in the Desert and Wee Jean. 2.40 Deloitte Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 1m: This looks to be another quite difficult one to call. There are several last time out winners in the field and quite a few that have the “could yet be anything “ look about them. Top Notch Tonto has my overall top rating with Ocean Applause (won last time out on turf) and Windhoek joint top on last time out ratings, but all may be uncertain starters. Fehaydi, Cape Peron, Queensberry Rules, Butterfly McQueen, Altharoos and Ayaar are all within less than 10 points (2 lengths) of the top pair on last time out figures. In a veritable coin toss I am giving the nod to Andrew Balding’s Butterfly McQueen on the strength of her course and distance success last time out and the not inconsiderable assistance in the saddle of the excellent claimer Thomas Brown, whose 3lb claim tips the scales in her favour in my book.

3.15 Cash Out Multiples Only on Betfair International, Heritage Handicap, 3yo+, 7f: I was very impressed with Julie Camacho’s Diescentric last time at Newcastle. He looks to be improving at a rate of knots and can go in again here. OK Bertiewhittle (second) and Trail Blaze (third) did the form no favours at Newmarket (a fortnight ago and last week) but Able Master (sixth) has won since and such was Diescentric’s authority at Newcastle that I believe he should be followed until beaten. It is possible that the ground was to blame for the defeats of Bertiewhittle and Trail Blaze and in the hope of softer conditions at Ascot this week I am sticking with Diescentric. He should again hold Santefisio, Compton and Gatepost and may therefore have most to fear from Smarty Socks (also declared for the 2.20 at York) and Al Muheer whose close up second and third behind the Rectifier at York in a fast run race looks pretty good form to me. Finally another one to enter calculations is Prince of Johanne whose course record time at Sandown recently was a very smart effort. 3.50 King George VIth & Queen Elizabeth Stakes Sponsored by Betfair, Group 1, 1m 4f: I am hoping desperately that Andreas Wohler sends Novellist over to contest this race. If he does this one is my stand-out pick of the weekend after his last time out success in the fast-run Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud where he had Cirrus des Aigles 4 ½ Lengths adrift in fifth. Cirrus des Aigles is my first reserve followed by Trading Leather, Very Nice Name and Ernest Hemingway. York: 2.20 Sky Bet Home of the Price Boost Handicap, 3yo+, 0-105, 7f: It looks as though Smarty Socks will appear in this race, despite an entry for the Ascot 3.15 race, and he gets the nod to score. He may have most opposition from (in order of last time out ratings): Compton; Gatepost; Norse Blues; Nameitwhatyoulike; Farlow; Galician and Gold Hunter. A strong showing from my overall top rated Navajo Chief would also be unsurprising. 2.55 Sky Bet York Stakes, Group 2, 3yo+, 1m 2f 88yds: Grandeur carries my top rating from lifetime performances but the one that appeals most here, and that could be a decent price on the day, is the Godolphin inmate Hunter’s Light. He already has a couple of Group 1s in his CV and can score at this lower level. He may get most opposition from Neatico who has won his last two races, both Group 3 contests. Chancery is also on a hat trick but is stepping up from handicap contests. Another to be running well and who also has a shout is Mike De Kock’s The Apache,

while Mukhadram cannot be left out of calculations on recent evidence. 3.30 Sky Bet Dash (Handicap), 3yo+, 0-105, 6f: The thickness of a cigarette paper could be all that separates the first few home in this very competitive sprint. Ron Harris has two leading contenders in Prodigality and Secret Witness if their last time out performances are anything to go by. Also in with a leading chance is Jamaican Bolt but the vote goes to Mass Rally who has been a revelation of late and has yet to run a poor race this term in my opinion. He seems to be in the form of his life and gets the vote to go in a again here, despite top weight. Others running well recently are: Gabriel’s Lad; Pearl Ice; Bajan Tryst; Tropics; Seachantach; and Farlow, while lifetime top rated Tarooq and four- timer seeking Nasharra also deserve a mention. Selection Summary (with reserves in order of preference): Ascot: 2.05 Beldale Memory, if absent Wind Fire, Lost in the Desert, Wee Jean, Queen Catrine, Fig Roll 2.40 Butterfly McQueen, if absent Fehaydi, Cape Peron, Queensberry Rules, Altharoos, Ayaar 3.15 Diescentric, if absent Smarty Socks, Al Muheer, Santefisio, Compton, Prince of Johanne, Gatepost 3.50 Novellist, if absent Cirrus des Aigles, Trading Leather, Very Nice Name, Ernest Hemingway York: 2.20 Smarty Socks, if absent Compton, Gatepost, Norse Blues, Nameitwhatyoulike, Farlow, Galician 2.55 Hunter’s Light, if absent Neatico, Grandeur, The Apache, Chancery, Mukhadram, Gabriel 3.30 Mass Rally, if absent Prodigality, Jamaican Bolt, Secret Witness, Gabriel’s Lad, Pearl Ice, Tropics Good Luck! Last week’s results: The final runners and results were: The Curragh: 4.40 Oklahoma City – 2nd @ Evs. 5.40 Darwin – won @ 8/11 6.15 Chicquita – won @ 9/2 Newbury: 2.05 Odyssey – 6th @ 3/1 2.40 All non runners 3.15 All non runners 3.50 Peniaphobia – won @ 5/1 Newmarket: 1.55 Trail Blaze – 6th @ 9/1 2.25 Sound Hearts – 7th @ 13/2 Market Rasen: 2.55 Baccalaureate – 10th @ 20/1 3.30 Woolcombe Folly – 2nd @ 11/1 The financial outcome was a 4.23 point profit to one point level stakes.

Football Round Up WEIR HONOURS PLEASED EVEN SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

A number of aspects pleased David Weir in Monday evening’s friendly victory over Alfreton Town. For the fixture against the Conference Premier side, the Blades fielded a squad that included established performers, development players, two from the under 18s squad and new loan signing Conor Coady. The Blades chief was pleased with the workout, commenting: “I thought Conor made an excellent start, I’ve seen a lot of him in Liverpool’s youth sides, he is comfortable on the ball and made a promising start. “It was also good to get 45 minutes into both Tony McMahon and Ryan Flynn. “Tony was playing like a winger at times and wanted to stay on for the second half; I think Ryan is a dangerous player who gets in good positions. We hope to get more football into them before the season kicks-off.” The 1-0 scoreline, thanks to Lyle Taylor’s first goal in a Blades shirt, does not do Weir’s side justice after a one-sided encounter.

SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Dave Jones and the Owls are looking forward to flying back to England and continuing their pre-season training on home soil. Wednesday signed off their week-long stay in Portugal with a pedestrian goalless draw against Hull on Saturday and Jones noted the players are feeling the effects of the seven days in Europe. He said: “There were some tired legs out there and that’s the result of work we have done out here in Portugal. “We’ve had two sessions a day and the boys have worked really hard. It’s been a long week but they will certainly feel the benefit of training in the climate of Portugal. “Everything we have done has been worthwhile so we will take the positives.” More specifically on the Hull game, Jones added: “We knew it would be a different game to Braga and it was. “There were hardly any chances throughout and I don’t recall either goalkeeper having any real shots to save. “The one chance we did create we should have scored. We have to clinical but show patience in other areas of the pitch. “But we’ll get there because that is what preseason is all about.”

WELCOME BACK MULLINS DEPARTS MARK ‘SARGE’ NEW YORK ALBRIGHTON RUFC NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

DRFC NEWS www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk

Sunday August 11th we welcome home Mark ‘Sarge’ Albrighton as part of the Charity Legends Football match at the Keepmoat Stadium. Mark will be part of a small band of ex Rover players joining the ex-Premiership Legends in a Charity Game to benefit Doncaster’s serious and terminally ill Cancer patients. Mark says, “I spent 4 fantastic years at Doncaster, the best and most enjoyable years of my career. The fans were fantastic to me, I had a lot of time for them and loved being called the ‘The Sarge’ “. Mark famously took control of Joey Barton during a friendly match with Man City at Belle Vue, he made 86 appearances for Rovers scoring 5 times and leaving the club in 2006. Currently playing for Barwell fc in the Evostick North Division Mark is really looking forward to being involved, “I’m really honoured to be asked to come and play for such a great cause. It will be the first time I’ve come back since I left. It will be nice to see the new stadium, some old friends and I’m hoping to see some of the Rovers fans who supported me in those 4 years. I feel Rovers is my club and I can’t wait to come home”

Johnny Mullins has joined League Two side Oxford United for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal, subject to Fotball League ratification. The defender put pen-to-paper at the Kassam Stadium this morning after successfully completing a medical, re-joining the club he signed for on loan during last season. “First and foremost I want to say that at back end of last season Johnny Mullins was terrific, and he will always be welcome back at the New York Stadium,” boss Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk “From the players point of view the three-year contract offered was good for him and his young family. Johnny is a top professional and an excellent player but with the form from the likes of Kari Arnason, Craig Morgan and Claude Davis we could not guarantee him a place on a regular basis. “From a Rotherham United point of view we will now continue to finalise our squad for the new season.” Everyone at Rotherham United would like to thank Johnny for his service whilst with the club and we wish him well for the future

Come and welcome Mark back to Rovers and enjoy the game whilst giving your support to this great Doncaster Cancer Charity, The Eve Merton Dreams Trust reg:1147191. opportunities for new players, or training volunteers to support new players and teams. The programme is delivered in partnership with all of the 46 County FAs and funded by The FA. Grow the Game has, so far, awarded 874 separate grants worth around £4.2m to grassroots football clubs. Analysis of the monitoring and evaluation predicts that this will result in the creation of 3,791 brand new football teams competing in FA-affiliated leagues, 72,872 new players participating each week and 10,959 new qualifications or courses being completed. Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Grow the Game has become one of the Foundation’s most popular schemes. This additional funding provided by The FA is excellent news for grassroots clubs seeking to start new teams and get their volunteer coaches qualified with FA coaching badges. “Congratulations to all 10 local clubs for working with the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA

to secure their £5,000 Grow the Game grant which will increase participation in the region as well as support football development in the area.” Brain Peck, County Development Manager said: “We are very proud of the clubs who have secured this funding. For the County FA it is great news that clubs are looking to develop, are looking to improve opportunities for young people to play and are looking to continue to work and link with the County FA to ensure the young people can enjoy their football in a safe and friendly environment.” … and the clubs who deserve the big pat on the back are: Bessacarr Juniors – Bramley Sunnyside Juniors – Crosspool Juniors – Doncaster Rovers Belles Juniors – Ecclesfield Spartans Juniors – Handsworth Juniors – Kimberworth St. Johns Juniors – Mangham Dragons – Valley Juniors – Worsborough Bridge Juniors

The Blades have this week completed the loan signing of England U20s captain, Conor Coady. The Liverpool player, who can operate in midfield or defence, has agreed a youth loan that keeps him at Bramall Lane until January. Boss David Weir comments: “I’ve been aware of Conor’s talents for a long-time, through his development with Liverpool and England and he is a great prospect. He will add competition for places in the midfield and will be an asset for us.” Coady, who was a team-mate of George Long at the FIFA U20s World Cup earlier this summer, featured for Liverpool twice last season, once in the Europa League and once in the Premiership. Liverpool-born Coady becomes Weir’s sixth signing since becoming Blades boss, joining Febian Brandy, Stephen McGinn, Sean McGinty, Jasper Johns and Lyle Taylor, who signed from Falkirk for an undisclosed fee earlier this week.
