Copley’s Column WINNING ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE MATURE AUDIENCE
It seems to be fashionable for entertainment
promoters to chase the student and younger population of Sheffield. It has to be said that
there’s plenty of merit in it, however it’s entertainment for a more mature audience that appears to increasing in popularity. The revellers we’re talking about are the ones that went to Josephines, Roxy’s/ Top Rank, Baileys/Romeo and Juliets, Tiffany’s, Craizy Daizy etc. Sheffield has the largest population over 50 years of age of any city in percentage terms. There are somewhere in the region of 150000 people over the age of 50. I’ve never quite understood why promoters have tended to ignore the fact that older people like to go out and be entertained. It was with this in mind that we decided to hold a Josephine’s reunion earlier this year and it was an outstanding success. The weather conspired against us as we had a record snowfall for March however, undaunted, we ran it again at the Platinum Suite at Bramall Lane and it was an outstanding success. The next one is back there again on the 25th October and I would seriously recommend you give The Mercury a call for tickets. Soul and Northern soul continue to be popular and there’s an ever increasing younger audience. The Bessemer on Leopold Street feature music from the 60s, 70s and 80s as well as does Maggie May’s on Trippet Lane and their popularity just seems to be growing and growing. There will be more events targeted at the ‘Young at Heart’ this year and next. What I can’t quite understand is why our WMCs, with a ready made membership, can’t seem to capture the mood. They have everything they need. Great concert rooms, parking, good drinks prices and their own membership to target. It may be
the case that they need to stick to a plan if they are to capture some of this growing market. It takes a while to establish a good night and it can take months and months. If an event isn’t a success in the short term it doesn’t mean that with some good marketing and perseverance to won’t be a success in the medium to long term. Queens Social has adapted to capture the younger market putting on up and coming bands in association with The Harley and they have three to four hundred people in the audience on a fairly regular basis. Maybe it’s a good time for our other clubs to look at the more mature market and follow some of the successful business models in the city centre.

A woman went to see a marriage counsellor about her problems. “Tell me” he said. “Do you ever watch your husband’s face when you make love?” “Only once” she replied. “And how did he look?” “Very angry,” she said. “Well, it’s unusual to only look once, and I’m amazed to hear he looked angry. What was happening when you saw him?” “oh, he was watching me through the kitchen window.”

A man was sitting with his wife celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. “Tell me,” he said. “We’ve had sixty wonderful years. Have you ever been unfaithful?” “Well,” she replied, “There’s no point lying. Yes, I have been unfaithful, but only three times. Do you remember when you were due for promotion and it all depended on Mike’s vote?” “Oh darling, so your being unfaithful helped me become one of the most successful men in our industry - thank you!” She continued “The second time was when the Council threatened to build a bypass at the bottom of the road, and the Planning Officer and Environmental Surveyor had the decision to make.” He was so grateful - “You mean you saved our wonderful family home at a time when the kids were young, even if you had to sleep with two men - how selfless of you? So what was the third time?” “Well, you remember when you wanted to restructure the Company but you were 84 votes short........” A man came home early from the pub to find his best friend in bed with his wife .... “Oh Jack,” he sighed. “I have to. But you?”
A wife was at home when her neighbour knocked on the door and screamed through the letterbox - “Do you know how to have sex with a man?” She was shocked. “Yes, of course I do. Why do you ask?” “Then give it your husband and tell him to leave my bloody wife alone!” A honeymoon couple arrived at the hotel. “Ah,” said the Receptionist. “You’ll be wanting the Bridal then.” “No” replied the blushing bride. “I’ll just hang on to his ears until I get the hang of it.”

NEW INTENSIVE SUPPORT SERVICE FOR SHEFFIELD

between health and social care is essential if effective services are to be delivered which reduce the impact of high levels of chronic ill-health in an ageing population • Good quality, safe, accessible housing is an important part of a more integrated system, and can improve health and social care outcomes, while delivering cost savings. Last year in England saw a huge breakthrough on this front with the Department for Health announcing an additional £40 million for disabled facilities grants. This is a first in terms of significant Health investment into Housing adaptations • The challenge for housing organisations is to make sure that those who develop policy and commission health and social care services are well informed about the role that housing can play in improving older peoples’ health and producing savings across an increasingly stretched health and social care system. It’s something that no-one likes to think about but Age UK Funeral Plans have launched a reward scheme to help encourage older people to consider funeral planning. While some people find it difficult to think about, the reality is that funeral costs have continued to rise over the last few years and a funeral plan is a useful way of protecting from future cost increases – by paying for cremation funeral costs at today’s prices. Charlotte Davenport, Supervisor of Age UK Sheffield, said: “Planning your funeral in advance may sound like an unusual item to tick off on your to-do list but being organised can actually save a lot of unnecessary strain in the future. That’s why we are keen for people to consider this. “So why not pop in to see us to talk about your requirements - whether that be home,
plans and flexible payment methods to suit different requirements. The Age UK Funeral Plan guarantees that the cremation funeral costs covered by the plan are met in full and at today’s prices, meaning less worry and financial strain for all involved.

THE GOLDEN LION RE-OPENS! After briefly closing the doors last week, Lee and Donna of The Golden Lion on Alderson Road, Sheffield, have re-opened this fantastically refurbished hostelry. Owners Punch Taverns commissioned the refurb and stipulated completion before this Friday’s first home match at nearby Bramall Lane. All of the contractors have worked extremely hard and the pub actually re-opened last Friday. The results are simply terrific; The Golden Lion has been sympathetically re-designed and decorated to reflect the traditional neighbourhood local it has always been, but with all “mod-cons” including a brand new kitchen and even wi-fi.
ENTERTAINMENT & EVENTS The Golden Lion’s popular Reggae Night continues on the third Friday of the month so the next such evening is 16th of August, however the week may change in the near future. On a weekly basis, Monday’s are always Ladies Bingo Nights and they even have a savings club. Every Thursday is Quiz Night while there is also a Mens Pool Team and a Ladies Darts Team, both playing on Wednesday nights, so couples can still go out together without one or the other being a “pool or darts widow.”
BEER GARDEN & FACILITIES The Golden Lion’s Beer Garden is one of the larger ones in the area, with seating for up to 45 and of course a smoking shelter, which is rather more attractive than most. TIME FOR TEA
MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas Hope you can join me to start your weekends on Magic. I’m here every weekday with Glenn Pinder, and on a Saturday with fun and games, news of what’s happening and of course just great songs to kick start the proceedings. From now on, I’ll be here with a few competitions and the chance for you to publicise your event by taking my all new TT Tea Test, amongst other bits and pieces. Quite simply if you’re planning an event, I’ll invite you to tell me and our listeners about it, come on the air and take advantage of some completely free air time for your group or organisation. I’ll start up the Magic kettle, as I attempt to make us a morning cuppa, and in the 30 seconds magic time it takes to boil you’ll have that space to tell South Yorkshire and the North Midlands all about the event. The only catch is that when the whistle blows your time will be up! To get involved at this stage all you have to do is email Trevor@ magicradio.com or call me on air during the show on the regular number, 0114 220 1548. Have a listen and see if this week’s entrant manages to achieve the feat, or even have a go yourself if you’re brave enough. See you then Trevor

VOICE OF THE THE CLUB NIGHTINGALE ACROSS THE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Radio Nightingale is on the search for new volunteers who can be involved helping to provide our special service to cheer up the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. You don’t need any expert knowledge or technical expertise to be successful at Radio Nightingale, most important is a willingness to learn and be part of a team. It has been medically proven that ‘doing good’ can give you a heightened sense of well being and a stronger immune system so volunteering is good for the soul. Plus of course it can also put you on track to improve your career. Whether you’re currently studying, in work or out of work volunteering is a great way to develop new skills, build your confidence and show future employers that you’ve got drive and initiative. Over 70% of employers say that they would hire a candidate with volunteering experience over someone who has never volunteered. Volunteering offers the chance to have amazing experiences, make friends with people from all walks of life, and who knows, perhaps even find love! Remember though that if you want to use volunteering to develop your career, treat it as work, not a hobby. There are a wide variety of tasks you can get involved with at Radio Nightingale – there’s more to a radio station than presenting programmes. Plus we provide training in everything we do so don’t worry if you’ve got no experience whatsoever you’d still be made welcome and kept busy. If you would like to find out more or get involved in Radio Nightingale contact us on 01709 304244 or apply online on our website www. radionightingale.org.uk Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. STREET (PT. 2)
CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
In the early years of the Canley Social club, boxing lessons were provided for the boys and these were popular. There wasn’t much else to do on the newly built local estate and the Council were happy for the club to help entertain the locals. Children more generally were catered for with the annual club outing, Christmas parties and summer holiday activities. I was far from alone in starting out on my first trip to the seaside in a coach that started from the club across the street. The excitement was tangible as several coaches left in the early morning heading for Skegness or Weston super Mare. The club’s membership grew over the decades with a long waiting list to join. Its team won many trophies and awards and the new and refurbished rooms were highly praised. In 1998, it became the first CIU club to secure a substantial grant- £462,787, under the CIU’s Lottery Initiative. This enabled the club to build a new floodlit multiuse games area, changing rooms and refurbish the indoor games hall and football pitch. Less than 2 years later the club left the CIU and ended up in private hands, ending a 50 years of affiliation. In recent years, there remained a number of football teams, mostly local young lads, who were doing well. Older members, and some not so young, enjoyed the bowls games. All these facilities remained well used if not used to full capacity. The club retained a small but steady band of loyal members who organised fun days and other community events. Its lease, however, was put up for sale in May. For some reason, the banks decide to pull the plug even though a buyer was interested. I am told that there is hope, that if this potential buyer can organize his finances, it may reopen. But right now, it remains boarded up, this club which was set up on one of several pieces set aside by the post-war council in 1948. 65 years of history. There is nowhere else to go on this estate, with just one small pub that cannot provide all the facilities of the club though it’s trying to help out. I hope along with all the members that something can be done soon so the Canley club is open for business again. Ruth Cherrington

While her parents are debating what to do about Don, Imogen assuages feelings of neglect by buying a rubbish car, then upsets Kate when Mason agrees to fix it for shared use. Tues: Walter continues to deceive Sonya, however he nearly comes unstuck at an AA meeting then sinks to a new low by stealing from the nursery. Hudson’s drug-taking gives Josh the perfect excuse to break with Don, but will Brad have time to coach his son when he is offered the job of manager at Dingoes gym? Wed: Sonya is shocked when the truth finally comes out about Walter. Sheila gets her chance to give the old rascal what for, but she needs Kyle to comfort her later. Thanks to Imogen, Amber and Josh fail to get together at a party by the lake. After tricking Paul into giving them a guided tour of Lassiters, Lucas and Vanessa contemplate moving. Thurs: After Walter’s betrayal, Sonya is in danger of a relapse until a conversation with Sheila points her towards a healthy solution - she joins the gym. Fri: Rani persuades Ajay to take her with him to India. Having been asked to take her in, Karl and Susan breathe a sigh of relief, only to be on the receiving end of a bombshell later.

THE CRIBS YNot Festival 03/08/13
If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
live PREVIEW
Words by KT Evans
For those who call the Northern regions of the UK their native homelands, it would be hard not to have heard the buzz surrounding a certain Wakefield trio...The Cribs. Forming one of the most influential and inspiring British indie packs in the last ten years, the Jarman Brothers are masters at creating authentic, upbeat anthems each and everyone can enjoy. Headlining the middle Saturday at Matlock’s YNot Festival, prepare your Raybans and Skinnies...we expect a strict dress code. Forming in 2002 The Cribs may not have topped the UK Charts with their five studio albums, however with NME naming the Brothers ‘Britain’s biggest cult following...’ Who needs to? Their back catalogue screams patriotism to their upbringing, however similar to that of the Arctic Monkeys, the group have not only matured within themselves as the years have crept up on them, but have grown into their certified sound. Anthems ‘Men’s Needs,’ ‘I’m a Realist’ and ‘Hey Scenester’ litter The Cribs repertoire, a bouncing dedication to their Northern roots. Influenced by the likes of The Smiths, Modest Mouse and The Libertines., 2008 was a turning point for The Cribs who gained an influential new member, Johnny Marr. Formally of The Smiths, Marr safeguarded Ryan, Ross and Gary as a musical force to be reckoned with. Standing loud and proud as their bass guitarist within fourth album ‘Ignore The Ignorant,’ Marr stood for everything that The Cribs were trying to demonstrate...pure passion. Hey let’s face it, it’s not everyday a musician from one of the world’s most pioneering groups joins your ranks. Never once to overshadow or dominate the line up, Marr not only gave Jarman co uplifting recognition but also the drive and determination to persist with their act of Northern musical domination, something which was demonstrated perfectly at Leeds Festival 2012. Three years ago, The Cribs were granted the pleasure of an early main stage slot at the years most anticipated summer music festival. Large enough to maintain a decent sized audience for such an awkward time slot, 2012 however saw the return to smash their way into festival history by producing one of the most memorable sets ever seen. Having been given the task of headlining the Radio 1 / NME tent, the trio gave it all their worth to a soundtrack of anthemic, energetic belters. ‘Be Safe,’ ‘Another Number’ and classic ‘Mirror Kisses’ injected the last day of events with a mark anybody who witnessed won’t be able to remove for a hell of a long time; in other words, they well and truly ripped Leeds a new arsehole. If YNot Festival is therefore to follow in the same vein, we suggest you buckle up for one hell of a bumpy ride!

Skull & Bones Presents Corporation 20/7/13
REVIEW Words by KT Evans
Sheffield is famed for many things…coining the word ‘mardy’, supplying the world with Bring Me The Horizon, producing staple roast dinner addition Hendersons Relish, however none more so than its annual music festival, Tramlines. Spread out over 70 venues across the Northern cities most infamous live concert venues, The Steel City is transformed into an all singing, all dancing state of live music affairs. With Sheffield based clothing company Skull and Bones Boys Club (SABBC) presenting the most brutal stage of the entire weekend at rock haven Corporation, bangovers were on the cards as ten of the UK’s most hardcore groups seized the two day event with all their worth… Opening the first day of musical shindiggery, Neck Deep and Decade both set upon the task with heap loads of gritty determination. With an audience as of yet not touched by the curse of a hangover, it’s clear to see the level of showmanship omitted from the 900 plus capacity main stage. Belgium’s Steak Number Eight didn’t fail to deliver on their hellishly feisty scale with track ‘DickHead’ safeguarding the four piece as a pack we not only would not want to mess with, but also one we must seriously watch out for in the future. Headline supports Gnarwolves will be awarded the prize for drawing the most energy out of the crowd however the night belonged to one group only...Canterbury. Sleek, charismatic and the unquestionable Dons of Corporation, the southern Brit rock quartet drew in every aspect of the SABBC Tramlines stage to conclude day one in tremendous ease and style. To day two...arguably the most fierce lineup of the entire Northern festival, Sunday it seems, certainly wasn’t the day of rest. Sheffield’s Black Dogs opened the afternoon and although a few hiccups mid set meant a slightly disjointed feel, like champs they continued to serve up an entertaining live set. Polar and Feed The Rhino both delivered big however the highlight of the entire weekend goes to Lead vocalist Becca of Marmozets. Similar to that of a caged circus tiger, Becca not only produced a rip rawring stage presence but vocals screams so far on the money, we bet you anything her band will rocket...and we’re rarely wrong.

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
There has been much debate this week about the decline in licence sales and the lack of new blood coming into our sport in the form of young anglers; so how to reverse this apparent decline?? Apart from completely turning off the interweb, disposing of every games console and scrapping Sky TV, it’s a very difficult question to answer and could have a number of variables to consider. Personally, I think accessibility is the main issue..... many waters throughout the UK are now private, club owned or syndicated, so there are nowhere near as many ‘free’ waters available as when I was a youngster, so actually finding out or even getting to a venue worth fishing can be difficult. Even if a novice can find a water which gives a realistic chance of catching, what then? Who will demonstrate how to set up a basic rig? Time and again, I hear tales of anglers being ignored or worse when asking for advice from those more experienced, and the family unit in this day and age may not include ‘dad’, so who do you learn from? Magazines and angling websites are full of features and articles offering advice, but is it really advice, or is it just a selling game? ‘Advertorial’ is a mix of informative article combined with a selected manufacturers products without which it becomes apparent, it is almost impossible to catch, so you must buy it! Novices are then bombarded with subliminal sales patter which imbues them with a sense of misguided perception about what they really need to catch fish; remember the old garden cane and bent hook? You can still catch fish like that now, without the need for every available gadget ever developed, so how do new anglers negotiate this minefield of misinformation and still enjoy angling?? Well, there is help out there; charitable organisations such as Get Hooked On Fishing (GHOF) and others offer independent advice about tackle selection, watercraft and the simple art of catching fish, all of which can be enjoyed for little if any cost. Many clubs run junior sections where the basics can be learned under the watchful guidance of more experienced rods and once the groundwork has been completed, then an element of enjoyable competition can be introduced. Qualified angling coaches are far more prevalent than ever before, and. although a more expensive option, will cover any area required, so there is help out there........ but could we as anglers do more? Fisheries could hold free days (a limited number of pegs perhaps?) with their own coaches to introduce new anglers? A long game plan where losing short term takings result in longer term rewards as the angler returns again and again to the fishery. Angling tackle and bait companies paying (or donating) sums of money to clubs and charities to run taster days, or tackle and bait items which has the added benefit of encouraging the novice to purchase more kit over the following years are just two of the many considerations for the future of angling. Unfortunately, my column is too short to delve further, but what do you think? Can you answer the question?? What do we do about it..............??

Glorious Goodwood on Channel 4 all week with the Stewards’ Cup on Saturday By Timelord There’s plenty of racing on Channel 4 this week as it covers the whole “Glorious” meeting at Goodwood, which is one of the prettiest tracks in the country. The big race on Saturday is the (almost) ten furlong Group 1 Nassau Stakes for Fillies and Mares bringing the classic generation into opposition with older horses. However, the race that the bookies are likely to be promoting most is the (almost impossible to solve) Stewards’ Cup – a 6 furlong handicap. It usually ends up with the (30 or so) runners spread right across the track and, with the draw and the ground making all the difference in the world, can go to any of the participants. With some unsettled weather about this week the ground conditions must play a big part so keep a watchful eye on this.

Good Luck! Last week’s results: The final runners and results were: Ascot: 2.05 Wind Fire – 5th @ 15/8 2.40 Butterfly McQueen – 5th @ 8/1 3.15 Santefisio – 21st @ 25/1
Friday: 1.55 Masterstroke 2.30 Glory Awaits 3.05 Lockwood 3.40 Medicean Man
3.50 Novellist – won @ 13/2
Saturday: Goodwood: 2.05 Robins Farm Racing Stewards’ Sprint Stakes (Handicap), 3yo+, 6f: This is the consolation race for those eliminated from the Stewards’ Cup so there are plenty of entries for both races (check each race on the day). I have sixteen that bettered a figure of 100 in my system last time out and a good few others that ran just below that figure. Of the current 75 entries there are nine last time out winners with five of these seeking hat-tricks. My final shortlist comprises: Baby Strange; Bajan Tryst; Best Trip; Harrison George; and Picture Dealer although I could easily have included another half dozen. Of these five Harrison George may well get into the Stewards’ Cup itself so the selection becomes Baby Strange with Best Trip being first reserve. 2.40 RAC Stakes (Handicap), 3yo, 0-105, 1m 4f: After a gritty display at Ascot last Sennockian Star gets the vote to continue his progression. The extra 2 furlongs looks sure to help. He is however entered on Thursday and so, if he is absent, the first reserve is Bold Sniper. Then I have another dozen all within ten points in my system so a very competitive race looks assured.
2.55 Grandeur – 2nd @ 6/1
3.15 Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes, Group 1, 3yo+ Fillies and Mares, 1m 1f 192yds: This looks to be the next logical step for the unbeaten Integral as she steps into Group 1 company for the first time. However it could be a tall order for a relatively inexperienced filly and I prefer to look elsewhere for the winner. The one that gets my vote is Godolphin’s dual Group 1 winning mare Sajjhaa who has had a good year to date. Ambivalent gets my first reserve position followed by Secret Gesture and Scintillula who are ahead of Integral in my estimation. 3.50 Robins Farm Racing Stewards’ Cup, (Heritage Handicap), 3yo+, 6f: With the ground and the draw playing such a big part my (quite unconfident) selection is William Haggas’ Rex Imperator who gets a narrow vote to score in this cavalry charge. The reserves in order of preference are: Baby Strange; Best Trip; Bajan Tryst; Hawkeyethenoo; Tropics; Harrison George; and Dubawi Sound. Newmarket: 2.20 32Red.com Handicap, 3yo, 71-90, 7f: Lady of the House could be the answer to what looks to be a tight handicap. Evident could follow her home with Skytrain, Gworn, Flashlight, Gravitational and Harry Bosch all being thereabouts. 2.55 32Red Fillies’ Nursery Handicap, 2yo Fillies, 6f: Eleven of the twenty five entries won last time out
York: 2.20 Smarty Socks – 2nd @ 5/2 3.30 Prodigality – 4th @ 20/1
It was a case of “so near yet so far” last Saturday when a couple finished second and some of the others ran quite well without making the frame. However my strongest advice of the week, Novellist, duly did the business, scoring at a tasty 13/2. The overall financial outcome was a 0.5 point profit to one point level stakes.

The new Championship season is less than one week away with Wednesday set to face Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Saturday. The 24-year-old was given a timely boost at the weekend as the Scot saw his fierce strike from distance hit the back of the net to level late against Chesterfield. Although no points were on the line at the Proact Stadium, Maguire was delighted to ink his name on the scoresheet and said: “It was great to score, it doesn’t matter if it’s a pre-season friendly or a league game, as a striker all you really want to do is score. “It’s come at a good time for me with the season starting next week and it has given my confidence a boost going in to it.” After a fruitful pre-season campaign, which included a week-long training camp in Portugal and seven first team warm-up fixtures, Maguire is now eager to take all that
