2013 TRANSPLANT GAMES HIT SHEFFIELD More than 600 athletes and supporters led by the England football band will parade through Sheffield city centre to kick off the 2013 Westfield Health British Transplant Games. On Thursday, 15 August, they will march from Devonshire Green to Sheffield City Hall, which is hosting the opening ceremony of the Games for more than 1,500 participants, spectators and special guests. During the ceremony at the award winning entertainment and conference venue, there will be presentations from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, the Chairman
of the Local Organising Committee for the Games, as well as the Chairman of Transplant Sport Andrew Eddy, who will also be lighting the Donor Family Flame to signal the start of the Games. There will also be entertainment from Bollywood dancers who will be performing at the ceremony. Richard Hunter, general manager at Sheffield City Hall, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting the opening ceremony for such an inspirational event, and our outstanding venue is the perfect location. We hope that we can help to build awareness of the crucial
importance of organ donation, and showcase how organ donation has changed the lives of so many people. The four-day event, which is estimated to generate around £1.5m for the local economy, aims to raise awareness of the value of organ donation, and increase the numbers on the NHS Organ Donor Register. The Games will feature almost 20 sporting competitions from archery to obstacle courses, and swimming to squash at Sheffield’s world class sporting venues, including the English Institute of Sport (EIS Sheffield) and Ponds Forge International
BELFRY
Sports Centre. Sporting activities will give people between two and 80-years-old who have had a transplant to show how it has changed their lives by allowing them to compete in the games and live their life to the full.
Subject to T&Cs
John Timms, event manager at MLS “Last year we were able to add 25,000 names to the NHS Organ Donor Register, we’re hoping to beat it this year and add even more names.”

Copley’s Column
As I am enjoying a well-earned (in my opinion!) break at the moment, I have little to report in terms of our local clubland. However my column last week prompted a number of very favourable responses from our readers, and, as their is a mention for my dear old pal Glen Dale, I thought I would publish the letter received from reader Steven Collins of Sheffield 5. Dear Sir, I would like to say how very much I agree with your column in issue 1016, regarding entertainment for the more mature audiences. My wife and I were young in the sixties, and so this is naturally the music we were brought up on and still love. However, most events (including Tramlines) seem to be aimed at the younger end, and as you point out in your article this also includes our WMCs. There are still so many sixties bands out there, but do we ever see them on our WMC circuit? I believe sixties hitmakers The Fourmost were in Sheffield last week, but that is a rare event. There are so many bands out there that people of our age group remember and would love to see again. One group springs to mind immediately, and that is The Fortunes, a Birmingham band that were based in Sheffield from 1963 and took club land by storm before going on to have hits (You’ve got your Troubles, Here it comes again, Storm in a teacup etc.) all around the world. They are a terrific band who still hold good to the original lineup’s focus on four part harmonies and great music. I am sure many people will remember them, as former clubland star Glen Dale was an original member. You have to travel to the likes of Rotherham, Leeds or Buxton these days to catchthem, because no one in Sheffield books them. They are on tour later this year with Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers and others we remember from our teenage years (There must be many club goers of our
age who will remember them, despite the fact that the lineups may have changed over the last 50 years.) who work and tour regularly but never seem to arrive in Sheffield. All the sixties bands have websites and contact details so I cannot understand why these experienced professionals never seem to be in Sheffield. Goodness knows why people go to see tribute acts when the real articles are still out there. Most of the people I see in my local WMC are middle aged, the younger end seem to prefer pubs these days, so why aim at that audience? Come on Club Concert Secretaries..lets have some of these fine sixties bands back in Sheffield before it’s too late for them, and for us.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
An English businessman was invited to a State Banquet while on a visit to Moscow. He was sitting next to a stunning blonde who smiled warmly at him as he sat down. Halfway through the meal, having drunk a few vodkas, he knocked his napkin on the floor and fondled the girl’s ankle as he picked it up but the girl did not react. A little later, the man dropped his knife and this time when he picked it up, he fondled the girl’s knee. Again, the re was no reaction. But then suddenly, as his hand moved further up her leg, she began scribbling furiously on the back of her serviette, which she passed over to him. It read, “When you get to where you want to be, please show no surprise, whatsoever. Yours sincerely, Arthur St. John Parkinson, MI5.”

A man was speeding through town when he saw a police car coming up behind him with the siren blaring. The motorist put his foot down immediately and the speedometer was touching 80 as he turned into the High Street. ‘Oh damn,’ he said to himself, ‘this is no good’ so he slowed down and pulled over. The police car drew up behind the car and an officer got out to speak to him. “Did you realise you were doing 80 miles an hour in a 30 mile an hour zone?” he asked. The man replied, “I’m sorry, officer, you see my wife ran off with a copper a few months ago and when I saw you chasing me, I thought you were trying to give her back.” “I’d like a Barbie doll for my daughter,” said the woman to the sales assistant “can you show me what you have?” “Certainly madam. This is Barbie with her scuba diving at £9.50, here’s Barbie dressed for the disco at £12, this is Barbie ready for the beach at £12 or there’s divorced Barbie at £150.” “What!” exclaimed the woman, “why is divorced Barbie so expensive?” “Oh that’s easy to explain,” replied the sales assistant,“divorced Barbie comes with the house, Ken’s car, Ken’s trailer and all Ken’s other possessions.”
“Mummy, mummy,” said the baby camel. “Why have we got big flat feet?” “So that we can walk across the sand easier when we’re trekking through the desert,” she replied. “And why have we got such thick hides?” he continued.“That’s to protect us from the desert’s fierce sun,” she replied. “But why have we got long eyelashes?” “That’s to protect our eyes against sand storms.” “So mum, what the heck are we doing in Bristol Zoo?”

The fun continues on Fargate, with bumper cars and fun fair rides, with a big wheel confirmed for the middle two weeks of August. Stilt walking mermaids, seaside music and ‘watery’ themed craft activities will keep all the family entertained on The Moor. And when the tide comes in there will be music, song and elegant walkabout entertainment on the Barker’s Pool promenade. Sheffield by the Seaside is featured in in the city centre’s programme of ‘Summer Saturdays.’ These are a series of events and activities that are drawing families into the city centre throughout the summer to stay, play, relax and enjoy the shops, entertainment, food and drink. It’s perfect for families in the summer holidays and it will be open every day. “With our ‘Summer Saturdays’ we are making the city centre truly memorable this summer and giving people reason to choose the city centre for shopping, socialising and leisure. You could even ask younger people to cook a meal for the older people in your community. • Exercise - Get out and about. Why not organise a walk or exercise session for older people in your area? • Socialise and learn - Organise a coffee morning or attend local groups for older people. We all love to chat and can learn so much from each other.

WORKSHOPS
Following the successful Alzheimer’s family workshops held during Dementia Awareness week, Home Instead Senior Care are proud to announce our commitment to the Sheffield Dementia Alliance to provide these groundbreaking family workshops as an ongoing initiative. These Free Family Education workshops are delivered in four parts and due to popular demand the numbers are limited so your early reply would be greatly appreciated. The workshops dates are as follows: • Day 1 - Alzheimer’s Disease or other Dementia’s - 8th August 13.30 Venue - Kinsey Road (Assisted Living Facility) in High Green, Sheffield, S35 4HP • Day 2 - Capturing Life’s Journey - 12th Sept 13.30pm Venue – TBA • Day 3 - Techniques to handle challenging behaviours - 10th Oct. 13.30 Venue - TBA • Day 4 - Activities to encourage Engagement - 14th Nov 13.30 Venue - TBA It would be ideal for people to attend all four sessions to gain an all-round knowledge and use the course to its full potential. Once you have done so you will receive a Learners certificate. It does not matter in which order you attend as we will continue with the workshops in the New Year as our ongoing commitment. The Home Instead Senior Care, family workshops will educate and support people to identify the typical signs of dementia and gain a better understanding of the condition. It will also arm family carers and others in the community with effective techniques for managing the many, different and sometimes challenging behaviours associated with dementia including refusal, delusions, aggression, false accusations, wandering and agitation. Although we believe family members will most benefit from these workshops, we are not limiting them to family members. They will be available to local people living and working in the community, in fact, they will be accessible to anyone who may interact with someone with dementia. Our aim is to increase awareness in the local community. If you would like to book a place on any of the above workshops, or if you require any further information, please call 0114 246 9666.

The closing date for draft plans to shape the future of Sheffield’s development has been extended to allow people longer to have their say. The deadline for final comments on the Sheffield Local Plan, has been extended to 5pm on Friday 6 September. The City Council has mapped out sites for hundreds of new developments – including housing, offices, industry, retail, and open spaces - to boost the economic and housing landscape of Sheffield. The document shows the Council’s planning ambitions for the city over the next five years and beyond. The deadline is being extended for a further six week period to provide everyone with the opportunity to consider recently completed background evidence as well as allowing for the summer holiday period. Dubbed the ‘Local Plan’, and formerly known as the Sheffield Development Framework, the document shows the Council’s planning ambitions for the city over the next five years and beyond. It could potentially see sites allocated for 11,000 new homes, 11 hectares of land allocated for new offices and 172 hectares for commercial uses. The consultations will look to support its decisions about prospective planning applications and show what the policies mean to each piece of land in the city. They appear in a document called ‘City Policies and Sites’ and in a new ‘Proposals Map of the city’. Final comments on these detailed policies and proposals will be considered prior to the documents being submitted to the Government for approval later in the year. People can view the Local Plan at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ localplanconsult and copies of the documents can also be inspected at First Points and libraries across the city during normal opening hours during the consultation period.

AGE UK SHEFFIELD ENCOURAGES CONSUMERS TO CONSIDER FUNERAL PLANNING It’s something that no-one likes to think about but Age UK Funeral Plans have launched a reward scheme to help encourage older people to consider funeral planning. While some people find it difficult to think about, the reality is that funeral costs have continued to rise over the last few years and a funeral plan is a useful way of protecting from future cost increases – by paying for cremation funeral costs at today’s prices. Charlotte Davenport, Supervisor of Age UK Sheffield, said: “Planning your funeral in advance may sound like an unusual item to tick off on your to-do list but being organised can actually save a lot of unnecessary strain in the future. That’s why we are keen for people to consider this. “So why not pop in to see us to talk about your requirements - whether that be home,
car or travel insurance - and if you take out an insurance policy with us or switch your energy to us before the end of August, then you will also be offered a £20 voucher off the cost of a Funeral Plan. The voucher can also be passed to friends or family.” All new and renewing insurance and energy customers will be offered a £20 Funeral Plan discount when they visit local trading offices of Age UK Enterprises, which offers an array of products designed around the needs of those in later life. Age UK Funeral Plans are provided in association with Dignity Caring Funeral Services. Age UK’s Funeral Plans enable people to fix the cost of a cremation funeral at today’s prices and remove the worry about rising costs. They are designed specifically for those in later life and offer three different
9
plans and flexible payment methods to suit different requirements. The Age UK Funeral Plan guarantees that the cremation funeral costs covered by the plan are met in full and at today’s prices, meaning less worry and financial strain for all involved. Terms and conditions for the discount voucher scheme: · Only one voucher may be used per Plan purchased. However, more than one voucher may be earned by customers who buy or renew more than one product in a local participating Age UK before the end of August 2013 . No cash value to the vouchers. · The vouchers are valid until 31st December 2013. We reserve the right to vary, withdraw or extend this offer at any time. For further information about the Age UK Funeral Plan voucher please call 0114 253 6960 or pop into Age UK Sheffield, 44 Castle Square, Sheffield S1 2GF.
MANAGING THE AFFAIRS OF ELDERLY PEOPLE With life expectancy increasing, the number of people caring for elderly relatives is growing. Elderly people’s needs can be complex and ensuring that they are adequately cared for can be difficult, particularly if family members do not have the legal authority to deal with their loved one’s financial affairs. If a financial Power of Attorney has been arranged beforehand, then things are simplified. If not, there are still steps that can be taken. A family member could be appointed as Deputy by the Court of Protection to look after their loved one’s financial matters. Jane Netting, of Wrigleys Solicitors, Sheffield, explains. “Deputyship gives someone the authority to manage the financial affairs of a mentally incapacitated person and use funds for that person’s benefit. The difference between an Attorney and a Deputy is that the Attorney is appointed by an individual while he or she is still mentally capable, so that the Attorney can step in when needed. A Deputy, on the other hand, is appointed by the Court of Protection to look after the affairs of a person after they have become incapacitated,
when it’s too late to put a Power of Attorney in place. The incapacity could be the result of a sudden event such as brain injury following an accident or illnesses such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.” The Court of Protection deals with applications relating to people who do not have the mental capacity to manage their affairs and it examines deputyship issues very closely to make sure vulnerable people are protected. Jane Netting has wide experience in helping people apply for deputyship, and she and her colleagues at Wrigleys have acted as deputies themselves. “If you wish to become a deputy for someone, you must apply to the Court of Protection,” she says. “There are strict procedures to follow, and the application is very detailed. Once you have been appointed, your actions as deputy will be monitored by the Office of the Public Guardian, a government office. There are likely to be additional forms to complete each year. Clients tell us that our ongoing advice and work in this area has been invaluable in reducing their stress, giving them peace of mind and enabling them to care for their relatives.” Wrigleys Solicitors

OPEN MIC UK - 2013 AUDITION DATES The UK’s biggest search for unsigned acts is back! Having seen more than 9,000 entrants to 2012’s competition, Open Mic UK has announced that the 2013 audition dates will commence from August! Auditions will be held at 15 locations across the UK, including Sheffield City Hall, as they try to find the country’s best singers, songwriters, rappers and vocalists. Successful acts are chosen to perform at some of the UK’s most prestigious live music venues, in front of a panel of industry professionals and packed audiences, at the live
regional finals. The most talented acts will then progress to the Grand Final within the O2 in London. Presented by Future Music - the company behind the development of artists such as Warner Music’s Birdy, Sony Music’s Jahmene Douglas and Columbia Record’s Lucy Spraggan, whose debut album is due for release later this year. With recent judging panels having included industry specialists and the likes of Radio DJ’s Annie Nightingale and Ras Kwame, Kiss FM’s Charlie Hedges and Ivor
Novello Award Winner Mark Hill, Open Mic UK has grown to become a serious contender for sourcing real talent with winners that can be developed organically over time, in the right way for the artist. Events coordinator, and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston said “Every year we hold this competition, the quality gets higher and higher. For promising singers, songwriters, rappers and vocalists, Open Mic UK provides a real opportunity to showcase their talent to music industry professionals and audiences across the country”
Open Mic UK will discover the acts that have the ability to become professional recording artists - prizes for winners include cash, studio time and development classes worth £50,000. For full details of audition dates, venues, age categories and more, visit www. openmicuk.co.uk Could you be the next Birdy, Jahmene Douglas or Lucy Spraggan?

7 DAY SOAPWATCH
Coronation Street Mon: Tina reaches breaking point at Jake’s party. David’s guilt begins to take its toll. Tina’s selfdestruction puts Rita in danger. Will Craig open up to awkward Kirk? Wed: Dennis is angered by Tina’s selfish actions. David decides to bury his guilt, for now. Will Sally find the right man? Fri: Karl’s world is shaken by a surprise revelation. And can Sally admit her true feelings? Karl goes to menacing lengths to silence Craig. Gary is concerned about letting Tina back into Jake’s life. And will Tim follow his heart?
Emmerdale Mon: Maternal feelings are awakened in Amy when she sees Kyle again. Katie agonises over whether or not she should expose Declan. Nikhil makes plans to leave Emmerdale for good Tues: Katie comes to a difficult decision about the body at Home Farm. Brenda takes drastic action to force Nikhil to face his grief. A conflicted Amy struggles to move on from Kyle Wed: Declan deals with the repercussions of Katie’s actions. Cameron keeps his distance from Chas, unsettling her in the process. Debbie dreads the prospect of attending Gennie’s funeral Thurs: It’s a difficult day in Emmerdale as the villagers attend Gennie’s funeral. Chas grows suspicious of Debbie and Cameron. Bob and Rodney are concerned when they are unable to find Brenda Fri: Cain goes to dangerous lengths to keep Cameron out of Debbie’s life. As Nikhil prepares to leave Emmerdale, Jai throws a spanner in the works. Declan forks over more cash to cover his crimes Eastenders Mon: Tensions mount in the Branning household when Lauren decides to throw a party in honour of Jim’s 80th birthday. Dot’s revelation shocks the family. Michael is shocked when Janine tells him that she and Danny are an item. Tues: Lauren is pushed to breaking point when she discovers that two people she trusted have stabbed her in the back. Joey discovers that someone has been dealing drugs in R&R and decides to investigate. After being pushed too far by Michael, Danny comes up with a plan to make Michael’s life difficult. Thurs: Kirsty is shocked when she is attacked, but will anyone come to her rescue? Phil and Max join forces to eradicate a person from their lives. Lauren nervously attends her first counselling session which is helped along when she meets a good-looking guy. Fri: Carl decides enough is enough and it’s time to get his own back. Kat forces Bianca to accompany her to a singles night in the pursuit of love. Fatboy arranges a blind date for Alice and Tamwar but will they hit it off? Neighbours Mon: Karl’s eight-year-old daughter Holly arrives for a visit. The Turners’ run of bad luck continues when Lucas reveals that he needs to sell their house, just when Lauren had persuaded Matt to think about another baby. Tues: Karl refuses to believe that Holly is as bad as Susan says. Josh decides that he wants Amber back. Touched by the Turners’ plight, Vanessa persuades Lucas to try to withdraw his offer on the Eclipse apartment. Wed: Robbo is arrested, but pleads not guilty and is released on bail. Just as Georgia and Kyle finally tell each other how much they are in love, Kate drops a bombshell on Kyle. Thurs: Despite two negative test results, Kate is sure that she is pregnant. Amber asks Robbo not to turn in Mason, but when he claims that he just wants to gain her family’s approval, the Turners are sceptical. Fri: After learning that Callum is planning to confront Robbo, Sonya tackles him herself, warning him to stay away from her family. However, they worry that she could snap under the pressure. Having gained possession of Amber’s phone, Robbo deletes a heartfelt text from Josh before returning it. Karl has good news and bad news for Kate.

METROPOLIS
We received some very sad news from John O’Hara. Wee Davy McHarg, the former drummer with the great O’Haras Playboys, passed away at 11.28am on August 1st. O’Haras Playboys were a top clubland band throughout the late 60s, 70s and early 80s. Davy was the original drummer coming down from Glasgow with John in the early 60s. They played in Germany with The Beatles and they had recording and TV success there before returning to the UK, settling in Sheffield. They were clubland sensations with their brand of high energy soul and even though they had a major recording deal with Fontana and made a number of releases over the years it’s a mystery as to why they didn’t achieve chart success. The band underwent a number of personnel changes over the years however Davy was the original drummer and very probably the best they ever had. He was also the resident drummer at Arundel WMC for many years. He was a wonderful drummer and a lovely man. He had started coming in The Bessemer and he loved it when I gave him a mention. He’s the one in the middle of the line in this photo with the big smile. He’ll be sadly missed.

live REVIEW
Words by KT Evans
Festivals come in all different shapes and sizes whether it be the mammoth Glastonbury which turns the usually sleepy Pilton into one of the biggest cities in the UK for an entire weekend of musical shindiggery, to the smaller, more intimate sounds of YNot Festival. Spread out over the idilic hills of Derbyshire, Pikehall is transformed into a self-titled ‘small fresh loud’ weekend of premium live music...this year? Everything you could possibly imagine... The difference between YNot and many of the other independently run festivals is that Derbyshire’s most anticipated live event offers a family friendly weekend for all. With arts tents, circus workshops, healing centres and the obligatory sheesha bars, Ynot caters for anybody who wants to thoroughly enjoy the experience. Match this with one hell of a line-up and it appears you may just have stumbled onto one of the best small time events of the entire summers calendar. We’ll forget about the curse of the outdoor festival (it seems an open air gig isn’t complete without a down pour) and although it may have dampened a fair few single skinned tents (we told you!) it certainly didn’t come close to dampening our sky high spirits...bring on day three. With the final day of spectacular live music beginning at 12.00pm, kicking processions of with an almighty boot up the soggy arse went to Rat Attack on The Giant Squid Stage. Dazzling us all with their eye wateringly gold sequined metallic shirt, the group brought with them a ska edge so far unseen within YNot 2013. Following them, Scholars, an alternative Brit Rock group with more punch than Mohammed Ali...like what we did there! Never once static whilst in the depths of performance, the groups central mantra is to deliver the best show possible... something which they did with both ease and fluidity throughout their half hour long slot. Whoever uttered the saying ‘Jazz is Dead...’ we invite you to dine out on your words...King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys are in town. Bringing back to life a genre of music which may have become lost within the younger generation, the group of talented musicians brought trumpets, saxophones and trombones for their main stage slot. The band sound both authentic enough to have stepped out of the 1930’s Charlston era although still current and on trend to appeal to the more refined music taste... in other words, they know exactly who they are and how to produce the catchiest of live music. Jazz hands, skat singing and a set of fine sapphire suits later, King Pleasure and co, we salute you. A group who we were totally taken aback by and ones which we are certain pretty much everyone else who stumbled by The Giant Squid stage at 15.00pm were too... MaybeSheWill. Naming Leicester as their native homeland, the five piece have found their point of different by being a complete instrumental band. But what the group lack with vocals, they sure as hell make up with on instrumentalism. Blowing away the entire packed audience, both lead and bass guitars were so full on and anthemic, this not only squeezed in the capacity on the third stage at YNot festival, but could easily fill arenas and headline shows across continents. Balancing both light and shade with tremendous effort and passion, MaybeSheWill evoked an energy and emotion within each and everybody who stayed to witness one of the best shows of the entire weekend. We strongly suggest you check this group out if you haven’t already, we guarantee you will be blown away. To The Quarry stage for main headline support- our favourite US rockers Electric Six. Bringing with them the masses, merry metal was on the cards within a half hour long set filled with heap loads

of humour. Both ‘High Voltage’ and ‘GayBar’ instigated some serious dance routines, although the placement of their most infamous tunes early on within their performance meant a vast amount of spectators dispersed upon hearing the most popular of songs. However, with a large enough fan base spread out across the globe, like the true professionals they are, Electric Six maintained a premium level of live performance to nicely warm the crowd up for The Quarry’s headline act - Dry The River. Emotion can often be very difficult to portray whilst live on stage. The overall passion can sometimes be swamped or lost within such a large venue, resulting in a half hearted attempting to bring about a few watery eyes. Dry The River don’t agree...and their live music certainly seemed to suggest otherwise. Masters of the moment, the quartet held together a set of love songs a packed out Quarry stage could relate to...forget about playing on gimmicks, stage tricks or over-egged lighting, Dry The River merely need a set of guitars, violin and rum kit to produce the most emotive and heart felt showcase of the weekend. Tracks ‘No Rest,’ ‘History Book’ and ‘Shield Your Eyes’ all safeguarded the fact that Dry The River may not yet have been touched with man stream recognition, although with a repertoire as powerful as theirs...we invite you all to watch this space...
THE MOTOWN MASTERS MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
One of the most instantly familiar sounds in pop history has to be that of Motown. The company was of course founded by Berry Gordy Junior in Detroit, taking its name from the area’s significance with the motor industry – Motor Town. Over the years the music stable has helped make household names of people like Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson and proved itself to be a major contributor to a big part of popular culture. Motown championed its own unique sound and brought soul and dance music to millions through various bands like the Four Tops, Temptations and the Miracles as well. After the success of our big giveaway last week, we’ve now got tickets to dish out for another top show this time celebrating ‘the Magic of Motown’ at Bridlington Spa. For one whole evening you will get treated to classics and Number one hits made famous by Motown’s stars. In fact you could well end up ‘Dancing in the street’, if you’ll pardon the pun. It’s on Saturday August 17th and we’ve got tickets to give away for you right now! Tune in at 8.20am first thing in the mornings all through this week and name the hits we’re playing on the Magic Music Box. You’ll go into a daily draw for free tickets if you’re correct. Good luck See you then

round-up by stuart renton
I’ve been told off for being too mean over the past few months, so this week, I’m going to be nice. No, really. I promise. In fact, I’m going to be so nice, you’d think someone else was fiddling with my column*. So, with that declaration firmly under my throbbing belt of enthusiasm, let’s get started. First off is Tom Daley, who has been given his first real television presenting job this week. Someone clearly saw him on Splash and thought he’d be a decent fit with Nickelodeon. Personally, I think this is just “great”! I really do wish him super luck in everything he does! I don’t care at all that so many vapid TV personalities are being plucked from the streets rather than from the pool of professionally trained actors, many of whom have spent years learning the skill of… waiting tables in London restaurants… Maybe Tom got the job by having a talent no one else possessed (in this case being an otherworldly shade of orange no human could ever hope to match). I think he’s a lovely colour, I really do. And it’s good to have skills. But ultimately, I think Tom should stick to diving as the best place for him is underwater. I’m being nice. I’m being nice! In other news, I got a serious telling off last week for suggesting that one of our leaders was a spineless cretin. This is completely unacceptable and the use of the word “cretin” on this occasion is deeply offensive to cretins everywhere. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to apologise sincerely: comparisons between cretins and the current leader in question were totally unintentional and no upset was intended. I’d also like to take the opportunity to issue a retraction that none of the Tory Backbenchers have ever read Coalition Cream Pies. That was clearly a joke which I made up to sully their frankly excellent reputations. They just don’t deserve all this mocking: after all, none of them have EVER said anything that was later proved to be a lie, falsified expenses, made outrageous allegations they could never hope to meet,
and of course, ever looked at any kind of pornography of any kind. It’s all nonsense… There isn’t even a magazine called Coalition Cream Pies – I made that up! Frankly, the members of Government do a “great job” under very difficult circumstances, and they absolutely and categorically don’t sponge off the poor and write laws to suit themselves. And speaking of laws: the Government now control the media so columns like this won’t be allowed if I were to suggest sexy shenanigans in the Houses of Parliament. Which, of course, I’m not, and if any MP is reading this (which someone probably is) I’d like to say I absolutely don’t think they’re a bunch of two-faced shallow and spineless morons who couldn’t run the country if the country was a hungry gerbil and they had two hours to spare in a locked room with only an industrial sized carton of lubricating jelly for company. That’s me spent for another week and this column just proves that I CAN be nice! Sort of. I’m off now to find a copy of Coalition Cream Pies spin off mag, Backbencher Beef Curtains. I hear it’s for meat eaters who want to tart up their bedroom décor (and I could do with a replacement for that well-fingered tallboy that’s looking drab in the corner). * I’ve tried to pay people to handle my column but most professionals in the sex industry don’t trade in half-eaten Kit Kats.
CLUB HISTORIANS AT WIN A BIKE WITH THE OLYMPIC PARK! RADIO NIGHTINGALE CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
The last weekend in July saw Club Historians participating at the Open East festival which marked the reopened of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London. I was working there with Rebecca Davies of the Beau Belles Ice Cream van project. Rebecca had a pitch at the festival for ‘mass bingo’ with an East End twist! Several tressle tables were laid out and decorated along with a small stage and sound system. Four sessions of free bingo were on offer, with 3 games per session and prizes to be won. With so much going on at the festival, would anyone walk over to our pitch and take part? And would the predicted downpour stay away? We had no need to worry as lots of people came and we only had a quick shower or two. Each session attracted more players as word got round not just that this was free bingo but that it was fun. Our aim was to bring people together, to encourage them to chat and laugh with each other, not just those they were with, for the different generations to sit around these communal tables and experience an ad hoc but pleasant sense of community. Bingo is not just about the winning, but participating as a group and sharing the event is part and parcel of the game. Rebecca was a fantastic bingo caller, with the usual phrases altered to have an East End flavour ‘1 and 8, Eighteen, Bethnal Green! Number 5, duck and dive!’ We got a lot of audience participation with some of the phrases and from where I was standing at the front, as the main checker, I saw a lot of smiles from faces of all ages and cultures. For the final sessions of each day the tables were overflowing and we had people standing up or sitting on the ground to play. We successfully brought them together and those new to the game were helped by the old pros. Several older people stayed most of the day playing ‘East End bingo’, loving every minute of it. Two days and 24 games of bingo later, we were slightly hoarse and tired but happy with the results. Bingo is a communal game with its own rituals and pleasures. So, roll up folks and let’s hope we can take our mass bingo to other venues. I reckon it should be available on the NHS!

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
I read an absolutely brilliant article this week on the website of Match Fishing Magazine by an angler named Craig Butterfield about being a sponsored angler; if you want sponsorship, you really should read it. Craig’s piece commented about the current ‘holy grail’ sought by many anglers, the ‘sponsorship deal’. It’s something I’ve often written about in the past, but it seems that many companies have now reached saturation point with the sheer numbers of supported anglers or ‘wannabees’ and are starting to evaluate exactly what, if anything they get in return..... As I run a number of manufacturers facebook pages and have my own too, every single week I get repeated requests from anglers seeking a deal of one sort or another as they have caught a couple of fish (perhaps even a single fish!) they consider worthy of reward....therefore are under the assumption that they merit attention. A request to see a sample of writing or some images is often met with shock, but as Craig truthfully states, it’s not all about fishing. There is a need to be able to write competent copy accompanied by quality images to highlight the products you are sponsored to promote and justify an investment made in you; what’s the problem with that? How about your attendance at an event or show? If you can’t commit to that, or a shop open day or a ‘teach-in’ when required, why should you get sponsorship? It should be a two way street, NOT the company give you products and gets nothing back.....just so you can call yourself sponsored in front of your mates....it doesn’t work like that, being a supported angler can be very hard work..... I know some companies are really trying to sort the wheat from the chaff, and Marukyu are no different. This week I have been working through our lists of field testers and sponsored team to see who warrants further support. Don’t get me wrong, some of our lads are superb, dedicated anglers who, if we cut them in half, would probably have ‘Marukyu’ through the middle; they actively promote their sponsorship, use social media and hard copy exposure to highlight the products, give time to the company and are respectful to other anglers on the bank....in
LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS
short, the perfect employee.... others however have taken advantage of a bait deal never to be seen again..... A list of over seventy has already been reduced to forty, and will perhaps be halved again as we choose those we wish to continue working with. Those selected will receive an agreement which will be adhered to by both parties, then we all know what the expectations are and can provide support to those who actively believe in and promote the brand...Marukyu gain exposure and publicity and the angler gets heavily discounted or even free product.... after all it’s a two way street remember? As I’ve said many times; “.....think not what your company can do for you, but think what you can do for your company.”

racing form by Timelord
Ascot, Haydock and Newmarket host Saturday’s TV cards This Saturday’s Channel 4 cards come from three venues. Ascot hosts the Shergar Cup day with six races on the box (two on the More4 Channel) with supporting TV races from Haydock (two races) and Newmarket (one race). Personally I usually find this Saturday’s Ascot card a little disappointing with fields normally limited to ten/twelve runners in tight handicaps and a somewhat strange jockey competition that can seem to many racing fans to have little relevance. With size of the allowed fields and the number of entries at the moment there are sure to be many withdrawals so the final shape of the races is pretty much guesswork from this distance. At Haydock and Newmarket there are two Group 3 races (at 2.55 and 3.35 respectively). Mark Johnston has many entries at Ascot so watch for a bold showing from his runners as the stable seems to be going well at the moment and his horses often do well here. On Sunday there is better fare on offer in Ireland. The Curragh has four Group races, including the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, on an interesting card with the exciting Kingsbarns possibly making his comeback appearance in the 2.45. Saturday: Ascot: 12.55 Les Ambassadeurs Casino Shergar Cup Mile, (Handicap), 4yo+, 0-100, 1m: George Baker’s Jacks Revenge ran a cracking race last week at Goodwood when trying to give Ascription 7lbs on good/soft going. That run should have put him spot-on for this. Viewpoint won at the meeting and may give him most to do while some of the others to be running possibly best at present are: Askaud; Captain Cat; Noble Citizen; and Nine Realms. 1.30 Redcentric Shergar Cup Stayers, (Handicap), 4yo+, 0-100, 2m: Mark Johnston’s Party Line has more than one entry at this meeting but wherever he shows up should be hard to beat. The reserve order of selection is: Brockwell; Broxbourne; Sir Graham Wade; Sula Two; Saptapadi (surely must run a race where he is not unlucky soon!); Arch Villain. 2.05 Barclays Shergar Cup Dash, (Handicap), 3yo+, 0-105, 5f: For this I Like the form of Stepper Point’s third in a Listed race at Deauville last week when finishing behind Riskit Fora Biskit ia a fast 5 furlong race on soft going. Close behind him then was Mirza who should go well in the 4.15 at The Curragh tomorrow (see below). The reserves here are: Jamaican Bolt (will he be withdrawn yet again?); Gabbiano; Diamond Charlie; Moorhouse Lad; and Steps. 2.40 Keltbray Shargar Cup Classic, (Handicap), 3yo, 0-95, 1m4f: Another Mark Johnston inmate, Dame Nellie Melba, gets the vote here after a fine second against older horses at Ripon recently. Reverting to her own age group should see her go close. The reserve order is: Wadi Al Hattawi; Prairie Ranger; Shrewd; Broughton; Cafe Society. 3.15 Pagegroup Shergar Cup Challenge, (Handicap), 4yo+, 0-95, 1m 4f: Party Line is entered here as well as in the 1.30 and would be the selection if running. The reserves are: Broxbourne; Saptapadi; Arch Villain; Anomaly; Jupiter Storm. 3.50 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint, (Handicap), 3yo, 0-100, 6f: Nenge Mboko earns the call over this trip after failing to last home over 7 furlongs at Good wood last week when fifth to Magic City in a good time for the conditions. The reserve order is: Angus Og; Noble Deed; Nardin; Shahdaroba; Muthmir; Bacotheque. Haydock: 2.20 Betfred “Better Prices on Goals Galore” Handicap, 3yo+, 0-105, 1m 2f 95yds: Labarinto’s third last time earns him a narrow vote to reverse the result with Viewpoint who beat him just over a length in receipt of 8lbs at Goodwood last week. That was the selection’s first run back after finishing down the field behind Forgotten Voice in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot and he may come on again for last week’s run. Viewpoint gets the first reserve slot followed by Sennockian Star who ground out a victory at Ascot recently. The remaining reserves are: Strictly Silver; Vasily; Anomaly; and Chancery although there is not an awful lot between all of them in my ratings. 2.55 Betfred Rose of Lancaster Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 1m 2f 95yds: Glacial Age put up a fast time for the conditions when second to Buckwheat in France back in June. He has since finished a disappointing sixth on faster ground at Maisons-lafitte in July but is taken to bounce back with a victory here. The (very strong) first reserve is Ann Duffield’s Willie the Whipper whose sixth behind Intello in the Prix do Jockey Club (French Derby) was another excellent effort. After this pair the remaining reserves are: Vasily; City Style; Telescope (improving); Quick Wit; and Making Eyes. Newmarket: 3.35 German-Thoroughbred.com Sweet Solera Stakes, Group 3, 2yo Fillies, 7f: Amazing Maria’s last time out win earns her a very marginal call over Midnite Angel who herself ran a
cracking race to finish second to J Wonder here last time out when trying to give that improving animal 6lbs and just failing to do so by under a length. The next reserves are: Adwhaa; Tinga; and Chriselliam. Sunday: The Curragh: 2.45 Bet online at TheTote.com Royal Whip Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 1m2f: I am taking Kingsbarns to record a comeback victory on his return to the track. The chief threats could come from: Festive Cheer; Battle of Marengo; Durand; and Qewy. 3.15 Friarstown Stud Debutante Stakes, Group 2, 2yo Fillies, 7f: This looks tricky but Ballybacka Queen could put up a decent show and gets a narrow vote over Minorette. Others with decent chances are: Bluebell; Heart Focus; Bye Bye Birdie; and Tap Dancing. 3.45 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, Group 1, 2yo Entire Colts and Fillies, 6f: Sudirman, War Command and Fountain of Youth all recorded identical ratings in my system last time out. The nod goes to Sudirman based on greater experience and continued progression (and possibly a better price on the day) although the unbeaten War Command is a very solid and competent opponent who has a similar profile to the selection. Ambiance, Coach House, Wilshire Boulevard and The Organ Grinder fill out the remaining reserve slots. 4.15 Paypal Supporting Irish Autism Action Phoenix Sprint Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 6f: If Stepper Point has gone in on Saturday in the 2.05 at Ascot, thereby upholding the form from Riskit Fora Biskit’s race in France, Mirza would be a strong pick for this. The reserves, in order of preference are: Snow Queen; Gordon Lord Byron; Cape of Approval; Hanky Panky; Arctic; An Saighdiur; Sendmylovetorose; and Mass Rally. Saturday selection summary (with reserves in order of preference): Ascot: 12.55 Jack’s Revenge, if absent Viewpoint, Askaud, Captain Cat, Noble Citizen, Nine Realms 1.30 Party Line, if absent Brockwell, Broxbourne, Sir Graham Wade, Sula Two, Saptapadi, Arch Villain 2.05 Stepper Point, if absent Jamaican Bolt, Gabbiano, Diamond Charlie, Moorhouse Lad, Steps 2.40 Dame Nellie Melba, if absent Wadi Al Hattawi, Prairie Ranger, Shrewd, Broughton, Cafe Society 3.15 Party Line, if absent Broxbourne, Saptapadi, Arch Villain, Anomaly, Jupiter Storm 3.50 Nenge Mboko, if absent Angus Og, Noble Deed, Nardin, Shahdaroba, Muthmir, Bacotheque Haydock: 2.20 Labarinto, if absent Viewpoint, Sennockian Star, Strictly Silver, Vasily, Anomaly, Chancery 2.55 Glacial Age, if absent Willie the Whipper, Vasily, City Style, Telescope, Quick Wit, Making Eyes Newmarket: 3.35 Amazing Maria, if absent Midnite Angel, Adwhaa, Tinga, Chriselliam Sunday (all at The Curragh): 2.45 Kingsbarns, if absent Festive Cheer, Battle of Marengo, Durand, Qewy 3.15 Ballybacka Queen, if absent Minorette, Bluebell, Heart Focus, Bye Bye Birdie, Tap Dancing 3.45 Sudirman, if absent War Command, Fountain of Youth, Ambiance, Coach House, Wilshire Boulevard, The Organ Grinder 4.15 Mirza, if absent Snow Queen, Gordon Lord Byron, Cape of Approval, Hanky Panky, Arctic, An Saighdiur, Sendmylovetorose, Mass Rally

Millers & Rovers News 2012-13
ROVERS FIND LIFE TOUGH AT THE TOP A bright sunny, warm afternoon welcomed the new football season at the Keepmoat Stadium, with Blackpool the first visitors.
The Rovers kicked off, with the early minutes being spent by both teams settling down as a team. Then, in the 9th minute, a good build-up by the Rovers led to Duffy chipping a cross from the right to the far post where Brown headed back across goal and out the other side. Minutes later a good run by Cotterill was ended when he slipped and the chance was lost. In the 15th minute the visitors won a corner but it was cleared. The next minute a shot cum cross from Grant on the left touchline whilst under challenge from Quinn had Turnbull diving at the foot of the near post to tip it out for a corner. The ball came out of the Rovers defence following the corner, to Ferguson on the edge of the penalty area but his shot was parried by Turnbull, who got his body in the way of the follow up by Davies. The ball ran loose and DAVIES was first to it to slot the ball into the empty net. In the 20th minute came the first caution as the game took on a feisty turn. Two more followed in the three minutes. Cotterill then had a free kick from 18yards saved by Gilks. Then, in the 27th minute, a poor back pass to Turnbull by Husband was intercepted and eventually led to a cross from Grant on the Blackpool left, which was headed wide by Davies at the far post. Each side then won a corner from which nothing accrued. In the 35th minute a good build-up down the Rovers left brought in a cross, which Brown chested down to Duffy but his effort was high over the bar. The Rovers were having their fair share of the game by playing some attractive football but they just could not get a clear sight of goal. Four minutes from the break another good build-up down the home left resulted in Coppinger cross right footed to the middle where Brown got in a good header, which Gilks caught under the bar. In added time the Rovers striker again headed over from another cross from the left. It had been an entertaining first half, with some good football played and a feisty period in the middle. Half Time – Doncaster Rovers 0 Blackpool 1 Blackpool got the second half underway and won a corner in the fourth minute, which came to nothing. Five minutes later and the Rovers won a corner following a free kick but again nothing came from it. The game was being played at quite a sedate pace but on the hour the Rovers won a corner on
their right. Before it could be taken Bennett came on for Duffy. Then Cotterill swung the corner into the penalty corner where JONES rose head and shoulders above everybody to head powerfully into the net for the equaliser. Two minutes later and a Bennett shot was deflected for a corner, which Jones headed wide of the far post. The game settled into an even contest, with a couple of cautions spicing things up. However, neither keeper was unduly troubled. Paynter came on for the Rovers and his first kick was to blast over the bar from 25yards. In the 84th minute, Ince, for the visitors, was played in on goal and as Turnbull came out he slotted the ball past him but also past the far post. Two minutes later Blackpool won a corner, which Ince swung to the far post where MacKENZIE headed into the net. The Rovers tried to hit back and in added time Cotterill crossed from the left for Jones but his header was deflected for a corner. Turnbull went up for the corner, which was well defended by the Blackpool defence. The chances were there for the Rovers to get the ball back into the visitors’ penalty area but the ball was eventually played out to Ince on the right touchline ten yards into the Rovers half. He swept a shot goalwards, with neither keeper nor a red and white shirt in a position to intercept it. A desperate chase by Furman was to no avail as the ball slowly rolled inside the near post and over the line. It was an unlucky ending for the Rovers, who had played quite well. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS LOSE OUT ON ROAD TRIP SWFC V QPR www.swfc.co.uk
The Owls’ 2013/14 campaign kicked off with defeat at QPR – but on another day Dave Jones’ side could have been celebrating victory. After taking a first half lead courtesy of new signing Atdhe Nihiu, Wednesday were denied one penalty claim and then another in the second period following a quickfire brace from Nedum Onouha and Andy Johnson that ultimately gave the hosts the points. Fellow new recruit Jacques Maghoma also hit the post to sum up a luckless afternoon for the visitors. Early on, however, the odds were on the Londoners laying the foundations for a win. Rangers meant business from the outset and threatened first through pacy winger Junior Hoilett, who burst forward to the edge of the area before unleashing a fierce drive that flew wide. Andy Johnson then drilled a low shot goalwards that was deflected wide as the home side turned the screw in the early exchanges. He went closer still on eight minutes, forcing a fine save from Chris Kirkland after a vicious shot from 12 yards looked to be heading in. The R’s pressure eased, though, and Wednesday looked more and more comfortable moving forward themselves, and on 18 minutes, they were rewarded with a stunning strike from Nuhiu. The big man picked up possession 25 yards from goal, beat off three challenges and hit an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead. QPR regrouped and almost equalised on the half-hour mark when Joey Barton delivered a teasing cross to the far post that Hoilett skied on the run.
Ten minutes before the break, Kirkland denied Bobby Zamora with a diving save following a sustained period of Rangers attacks. But just as it seemed the Owls would head down the tunnel in front, a string of events went against them that turned the game on its head. First, Joe Mattock fell victim to injury and was withdrawn, then Michail Antonio had a shout for a penalty turned down when the winger went down under a challenge from Armand Traore. And Wednesday were then struck by a double blow that altered the course of the contest. On 38 minutes, Onouha stabbed home from close range after a mishit shot from Hoilett, before Johnson hit a sweet volley past Kirkland two minutes later after the keeper kept out a Barton header. It was hard on the Owls but they should have equalised four minutes after the restart when Jermaine Johnson broke free of his marker to advance and square for Antonio, whose shot from ten yards failed to find the target. That was after Kirkland had again thwarted Hoilett with a reflex save as Rangers were out of the traps apace. But Wednesday still looked dangerous in the final third and substitute Maghoma seemed to be clipped in the box by Barton but again the penalty claims were waved away – and Moghoma was booked for simulation. The Owls gave as good as they got as the remainder of the game unfolded but action of note was in short supply at either end until the closing stages when Kirkland twice foiled Hoilett and new R’s striker Charkie Austin was inches away from marking his debut with a goal.
JONES UNHAPPY WITH DECISIONS MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones highlighted the fine lines between defeat and victory following the Owls’ 2-1 reverse at QPR on Saturday. Wednesday kicked off the campaign in controversial style, with two penalty claims at key points in the game declined. And Jones says that can be the difference between success and failure: “It is fine lines and you want the big decisions to be the right ones. Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way today and it is really disappointing. The first one is a penalty and the second one is as clear cut as you are going to see. But it hasn’t gone for us and there is nothing we can do about it now. It could have gone either way and we certainly deserved something from the game.
We’ve hit the post, we could have had another couple but it wasn’t our day. We’ve switched off for a crucial spell of the game and you can’t do that.” Jones was boosted, though, by the introduction of new signing Atdhe Nuhiu, who put the Owls in the lead on his debut before Rangers hit back to win the game. The manager said: “He took his goal really well and I am pleased for him. He’s not been with us for long and he’s not match fit but he’s getting there and it will come. He’s a big lad, he has good feet and he will do well for us.” Sheffield Wednesday are reminding supporters of their conduct regarding the setting off of smoke bombs or flares at Owls fixtures, home or away. As has been emphasised in the recent past, he club are determined to eradicate this unacceptable behaviour and will undertake additional searching as well as instructing CCTV operators and stewards to be increasingly vigilant to assist in identifying those in possession of such articles. Anyone found to be in possession of any banned item, whether set off or not, will receive an indefinite club ban from Hillsborough and all away matches. Such an offence will also lead to arrest by the Police followed by a charge and criminal record.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14 TOP OF THE LEAGUE SUFC V NOTTS COUNTY www.sufc.co.uk The Blades were the winners in an historic game at Bramall Lane on Friday evening - the first of The Football League’s 125th anniversary season. Kevin McDonald scored the first goal of the campaign and Harry Maguire netted the winner as County played over 75 minutes with ten-men after Gary Liddle was sent off. David Weir’s first competitive selection as manager included new boys Brandy and McGinn, whilst Taylor, Coady and McGinty were on the bench. The Blades were forced to kick towards the Kop in the first half and started with the favoured pre-season formation of 4-2-3-1 with Porter the lone striker, supported by Brandy, McDonald and Murphy, who was fouled in the second minute and curled the free-kick into the arms of Bialkowski. Also in a bright start, Murphy curled wide after being presented with a chance by Labadie’s mis-placed pass. Notts County caused problems from their first corner, Long saving with his body after Haynes got a deft touch to an inswinger but there was controversy from the subsequent breakaway. From a Porter flick, McDonald looked to advance on goal but was caught by Liddle’s high boot and referee Stroud immediately reached for his red card and presented it to the County defender. McDonald recovered after treatment, immediately scuffing a shot, but County’s ten-men reshaped and were lucky to survive a penalty shout when Leacock went through the back of Porter, who was looking to latch on to Westlake’s cross. McGinn fired over on 25 minutes and Brandy was off target with a half-volley after Porter chested down. However, United’s early dominance was rewarded on the half hour, courtesy of a sweet move. A few passes resulted in Brandy feeding Westlake on the right and his low cross was met perfectly by McDONALD, who swept the ball home before Bialkowski could move. The Kop, naturally, were delighted the first goal of the whole season was scored in front of them. The visitors hit back with their best chance of the half but Labadie, despite wriggling free to latch on to Sheehan’s free-kick, headed wide, whilst United
were quickly back on the offensive with Brandy and Doyle efforts before the interval. United began the second period well, with Doyle and McDonald shooting from the edge of the box, and Blades fans thought that a penalty was on the way when Brandy appeared to be fouled by Arquin but the referee penalised the home side and, to add insult, Brandy was booked for speaking out of turn. Porter had two chances to extend the lead. He clipped just over the crossbar after Brandy’s pace got the better of Fotheringham on the left and then the number nine was unable to touch home at the back post after Collins had fired back into the danger area from a Murphy corner. County made two substitutions before the hour mark and they immediately paid dividends. It was one of the replacements, SHOWUNMI, who held off Maguire to receive Bialkowski’s kick before turning and smashing into the bottom corner of Long’s net from 20 yards. McGinn fired over from range and Weir threw on his first two substitutions, McFadzean and Taylor, in the space of two minutes - and in between the Blades regained the lead. On 67 minutes, McGinn swung in a deep freekick from the right and MAGUIRE was ideally placed at the back post to head home. McDonald’s attempted curler from
the edge of the box was blocked but the Blades lost skipper Doyle on 79 minutes to injury, he was applauded as he limped off and was replaced by debutant Coady. As the final ten minutes approached Taylor’s first shot was a 30 yard free-kick which Bialkowski parried away. A 35-yard volley from Fotheringham caused a nervous time on 87 minutes but the Blades had further chances to secure the victory in the final moments, which included five extra minutes. Brandy was denied by Bialkowski after Westlake’s pull back, Taylor’s shot was blocked and Coady, after another neat Westlake pass, curled just wide with the outside of his right foot. Also in added time Taylor just failed to get on a shot across goal by Westlake but the Blades maintained possession well late on to secure a deserved victory. Blades: Long, Westlake, Williams, Maguire, Doyle (Coady 79), Porter (Taylor 68), McDonald, McGinn, Collins, Brandy, Murphy (McFadzean 66). Unused: Howard, Hill, Flynn, McGinty. Notts County: Bialkowski, Dumbuya, Sheehan, Liddle, Leacock, Haynes (Zoko 66), Arquin (Showunmi 61), Labadie (Tempest 58), Campbell-Ryce, Fotheringham, Boucard.

WEIR HAPPY WITH JOB WELL DONE MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk David Weir was delighted to see his team kick-off the Football League season with a deserved three points on Friday night. Speaking after goals from Kevin McDonald and Harry Maguire paved the way for a 2-1 success over ten-man Notts County at Bramall Lane, the new Blades boss was full of praise for the players: “I don’t know whether it was enjoyable during the game, but it is certainly nice to be reflecting on three points now. The sending off changed the game and put a bit more pressure on us, but we handled it well, especially in the first-half. With Notts County equalising on the hour it gave us another challenge but I thought we were patient throughout and handled the expectation of going on and winning the game.” Weir added: “We learnt a lot on the night, we were asked a few questions and we answered them well. We kept passing and moving, creating chances and I thought the signs were very positive. We have worked hard in pre-season so we expect the players to perform to that level, but the way we kept the ball in particular was very encouraging.”

Febian Brandy was pleased with both his own and his teammates’ opening performance on Friday evening. The 24-year-old made his competitive debut in the 2-1 success over Notts County, proving a constant thorn in the side of the Magpies. “It was a deserved win, we were on top from start to finish,” he said. “The red card did help but even if they had eleven men on the pitch, we’d have edged them out. Personally, I like to try to entertain and if the fans are on my side then that gives me more confidence. I like to show the fans what I can do and if I can get them off their seats and create chances at the same time then it is a win-win situation. Friday was good for both me and the team, it went well as a start and hopefully we can show more as the season progresses.”
