Copley’s Column I am indebted to my friend and managing editor for standing in for me whilst I have been having a family holiday on Majorca for the past two weeks. I must confess to not feeling particularly revitalised after a fortnight of good eating, hard drinking and unbelievably hot weather. This week is my birthday week, I am no longer satisfied with just one day of celebration and having kicked off the week with a massive rump steak and homemade fat chips, followed by a delicious Mars Bar cheesecake and a dozen pints of San Miguel in Tex Mex and Sue’s place on Majorca, I am now fired up to continue the celebrations back home. My close pal and local landlord, Chris Snell, put me a band on last year and has continued this very generous gesture by engaging a brilliant artiste, John Alex, for my Thursday night party at his fine hostelry, the Victoria Inn, Dronfield, a steady or unsteady walk from my home. I shall be there on Saturday, my actual birthday with family and friends. The Victoria is a great pub for sports lovers and one can now watch Sky Sports, ESPN, and the new B.T. Sports, so if there is sport on television, on whatever channel, it is available. This keeps him well up in the race with the fierce local competition. I kept up to date with news back in England whilst away by buying a Daily Mail every day at treble the price in England and was appalled to read about poor little Daniel Pelka, who was caged, starved, made to eat salt and eventually killed by his disgusting parents. What on earth can make people treat their own children in this way, it beggars belief. My views on bullies and people who condone that behaviour are well documented, and I am not ashamed to say that I would stoop to their level given the opportunity to be able to visit their cells accompanied by should I say my stronger pals
Across
and beat the pair of them to a pulp. What is evident in this case is the useless job performed by social services. They are absolutely clueless and a full inquiry must be instituted to replace them, nationwide. My own experience with them in Sheffield made me hope and pray that the incompetents involved during my fruitless attempts to gain proper access to my children after an acrimonious divorce, had no children of their own. Both Sheffield football clubs have made a very poor start to the season, which is so disappointing for the supporters of both teams who have been looking forward to the new season.

SHEFFIELD’S KELL Weekly Wit With... ALBERT BROOK RETURNS SNODGRASS TO THE ARENA
Kell Brook will face Vyacheslav Senchenko at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on October 26, live on Sky Sports. Tickets are now on general sale in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk. Tickets purchased online or through the ticket hotline are priced £110, £66, £44 & £33 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £105, £63, £42 & £31.50 including booking fee. The unbeaten Sheffield welterweight moved to 30-0 with his 20th stoppage at the MS3 Craven Park in Hull earlier this month, dispatching his ‘nemesis’ Carson Jones in eight rounds. Senchenko is familiar to British fight fans having stopped Ricky Hatton in the Manchester man’s comeback fight in November. The Ukrainian took the WBA title from Yuriy Nuzhnenko in April 2009, defending the belt three times before his sole defeat on his 34 fight record to Paulie Malignaggi in April 2012. “It’s a tough task but I’m very excited,” Brook told Sky Sports News. “Anyone who stops Ricky Hatton is a dangerous fighter and one that I will take very seriously, so I can’t wait to get in there and train very hard to put on a good show for my fans in Sheffield. He’s been a World champion, been there and done it, so he will be out to prove that he’s worthy of another crack at being on top of the World. “I really get up for it when I box in Sheffield, it’ll be packed to the rafters and they are really passionate fans - so I can’t wait to be back in my Arena, in a big fight that will take me closer to a World title shot. I’m on the doorstep of a World title and I’m ready to show I have what it takes to win it.” Promoter Eddie Hearn believes he has got the right fight for Brook, who is closing in on a World title shot after his successful return from injury against Jones. “I’m delighted to make this fight and feel it’s the perfect fight for Kell at this time,” said Hearn. “It’s without doubt his sternest test yet and Senchenko brings credibility as a former World title holder and mass appeal after his KO win over Ricky Hatton. We are going to put on a special show in Sheffield and the atmosphere will be electric.” Tickets are now on general sale in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

With ten multiplatinum albums and sixteen Top 30 hits, Foreigner is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales, now exceeding 75 million. At Foreigner’s core is founder and lead guitarist Mick Jones, the visionary maestro whose stylistic songwriting, indelible guitar hooks and multi-layered talents continue to escalate Foreigner’s influence, along with Kelly Hansen (lead vocals) Jeff Pilson (bass guitar) and multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel. In June 2013, Billy Joel inducted Mick Jones into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Special guests are the legendary, multimillion selling, Swedish hard rock band Europe. Hot off the heels of a Spanish tour with Def Leppard and Whitesnake, Europe have made nothing short of a remarkable comeback with their last four studio albums, “Start From The Dark,” “Secret Society”, “Last Look At Eden” and their ninth and most critically acclaimed studio album “Bag Of Bones” which was declared the 16th best rock album of 2012 by the Classic Rock Magazine. Special guests FM will be opening the concerts on the upcoming UK tour. FM formed in 1984 and quickly hit the road touring with the likes of Meat Loaf, Tina Turner, Foreigner, Gary Moore, Status Quo and the white-hot Bon Jovi on their “Slippery When Wet” tour.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
The Power of Positive Thinking In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in positive thinking movements, such as Cosmic Ordering and The Law of Attraction. Cosmic Ordering is the idea that if an order is placed with the Universe, the Cosmos will manifest it. The Law of Attraction works with the principle that thoughts can have energy that attract like energy. This can manifest into reality which offers a pathway to abundance, success and happiness.
the lovely things you have bought with it and click to the positive mode. Don’t think ‘how am I going to pay this’ as help will come if you ask the universe. You cannot help but focus on things, it’s only natural and we all do it until we learn the power of positive thinking and that Cosmic Ordering really does work.
What To Do Let’s think about placing that important order. For instance, you might have some important exams that you need to pass. Passing these exams could mean a really good job with a high salary! Try Cosmic Ordering - however, you must put the work in as well! Get a piece of paper, preferably green because green is the colour of abundance, write on the paper exactly what you want to achieve, for example ‘please help and support me Positive Thinking Positive thinking is an attitude that determines through my exams’. It is important to include ‘thank you’ in your message. Read it aloud how a person perceives and interprets their to the Cosmos and then bury it in the garden world. Positive thinkers see the world in the where it wont be disturbed. Make that your best light and are optimistic about people and dominant thought for that day and it will bring events. Contrary to popular belief, positive thinking does not mean viewing the world in an abundance. over optimistic light and ignoring the negative. Have you ever looked at someone and thought Rather than denying the negative, positive ‘they have it all’? COUNCILLOR GETS ON HIS BIKE AGAIN!
Sheffield City Councillor Peter Price who is also the city’s older people’s champion, is to attempt the Trans Central America Cycle Challenge for Macmillan Cancer Appeal between 14th and 24th November 2013. At the age of 75 and with a knee implant, he will be attempting to cycle 450, hot humid kilometres, in six days, through the Central American countries of Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Appeal. Two years ago, he wondered if his old knee could take it anymore, since over the past 12 years he has cycled across Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba. London to Paris, China, Vietnam/Cambodia and has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, raising over £100,000 in sponsorship. Peter is fully aware that at his age this promises to be an extremely testing physical challenge, over some very difficult road surfaces. He, together with other fund raisers, will be completely removed from the luxuries of western life, but really it is minor compared with the challenge cancer patients and their families face each day. One in three of us will suffer from cancer at some stage of our life, which means, if we do not personally contract the disease, we will know someone very close who has. Peter knows from personal experience what a wonderful service the Macmillan organisation provides, he lost his wife Janet through cancer back in 2000. Macmillan are working towards the day when everyone will have a ready access to the best information, treatment and care for cancer. They fund specialist Macmillan nurses and doctors, buildings for treatment and care and grants for patients in financial difficulties. These services help to alleviate fear and make the lives of people with cancer and their families easier. He has to raise a minimum of £3450, of which at least 65 per cent will benefit Macmillan. However he hopes to raise more than this and asks that you consider sponsoring him in his challenge. Cheques can be handed in to the Town Hall made payable to Macmillan Cancer Relief. Or he has a web site www.justgiving. com/Peter-Price5 which can be used. For more details ring Peter on 0114 2459003 or 07843874228.

AGE UK SHEFFIELD ENCOURAGES CONSUMERS TO CONSIDER FUNERAL PLANNING It’s something that no-one likes to think about but Age UK Funeral Plans have launched a reward scheme to help encourage older people to consider funeral planning. While some people find it difficult to think about, the reality is that funeral costs have continued to rise over the last few years and a funeral plan is a useful way of protecting from future cost increases – by paying for cremation funeral costs at today’s prices. Charlotte Davenport, Supervisor of Age UK Sheffield, said: “Planning your funeral in advance may sound like an unusual item to tick off on your to-do list but being organised can actually save a lot of unnecessary strain in the future. That’s why we are keen for people to consider this. “So why not pop in to see us to talk about your requirements - whether that be home,
car or travel insurance - and if you take out an insurance policy with us or switch your energy to us before the end of August, then you will also be offered a £20 voucher off the cost of a Funeral Plan. The voucher can also be passed to friends or family.” All new and renewing insurance and energy customers will be offered a £20 Funeral Plan discount when they visit local trading offices of Age UK Enterprises, which offers an array of products designed around the needs of those in later life. Age UK Funeral Plans are provided in association with Dignity Caring Funeral Services. Age UK’s Funeral Plans enable people to fix the cost of a cremation funeral at today’s prices and remove the worry about rising costs. They are designed specifically for those in later life and offer three different
plans and flexible payment methods to suit different requirements. The Age UK Funeral Plan guarantees that the cremation funeral costs covered by the plan are met in full and at today’s prices, meaning less worry and financial strain for all involved. Terms and conditions for the discount voucher scheme: · Only one voucher may be used per Plan purchased. However, more than one voucher may be earned by customers who buy or renew more than one product in a local participating Age UK before the end of August 2013 . No cash value to the vouchers. · The vouchers are valid until 31st December 2013. We reserve the right to vary, withdraw or extend this offer at any time. For further information about the Age UK Funeral Plan voucher please call 0114 253 6960 or pop into Age UK Sheffield, 44 Castle Square, Sheffield S1 2GF.
LOOKING AFTER THE GRANDCHILDREN? Make sure it counts towards your State Pension. Grandparents caring for grandchildren under 12 could qualify for National Insurance credits that can top up their income in retirement. Pensions Minister Steve Webb is urging grandparents who work hard to look after Britain’s children throughout the year to claim what they are entitled to. Thousands of grandparents caring for their grandchildren over the summer holidays could be missing out on the chance to boost their future State Pension, the government has warned today. Many working-age grandmothers and fathers could qualify for Class 3 National Insurance credits for looking after children aged under 12 – which can be used to top up their income in retirement. Half of Britain’s 7 million working-age grandparents have a grandchild under the age of 16. The new system of transferable
National Insurance credits means that grandparents need no longer lose out on building up a full state pension just because they are caring for a grandchild. Working parents can give up the Child Benefit credits they receive and donate them to their child’s grandparents or other adult family members for the previous tax year. Grandparents and parents must apply for the credits to be transferred. Applications for NI credits for caring for children under 12 need to be made to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and must be signed by both the adult carer and the Child Benefit recipient. Applications need to be made in the October following the end of the tax year in which the caring took place. For details of who can apply and how, visit www.gov.uk/nationalinsurance-credits/eligibility or phone the National Insurance Helpline on 0845 302 1479. Sheffield 50+

CUSWORTH MUSIC FESTIVAL 2013
This forthcoming bank holiday Sunday (25th) some great names from the world of Rock and Blues descend upon Doncaster for the Cusworth Music Festival 2013. Set in the beautiful grounds of the historic Cusworth Hall in Doncaster, this festival will appeal to music lover across the country and put simply; it will be a great experience and day to remember! This years very special line-up, includes: Wilko Johnson, Chantel McGregor, Mickey Finn’s T-Rex, Mostly Autumn, The Brew UK, The Avit Blues Band and more acts are to be announced soon!
Chantel McGregor Chantel has stepped out in the pro-musician world and her stunning live performances are proving that this is rock blues for the new age, played by a musician born with an effortless virtuosity, peppered by flights of incendiary guitar and flanked by moments of poise, grace and fluidity.
Wilko Johnson Wilko Johnson, best known for his work with 1970s pub rock and rhythm and blues band Dr Feelgood, will top the bill at the concert on August 25. He’s a poet, a painter, an astronomer and an actor, but Wilko also happens to be one of the great British rock guitarists, acknowledged by his peers as among the most influential. Earlier this year, the singer and guitarist announced he was suffering from terminal cancer and announced a farewell tour ahead of his death after doctors gave him just a few months to live. He said: “It seems that I am still being spared from the final onslaught of my terminal cancer. I am feeling again the desire to get up on stage and do my thing while my health allows - so it is that I have decided to make some festival appearances during the summer.” He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January this year and was told that he only has nine to ten months to live.
Mickey Finns T-Rex The band today with its expanded line-up reflects the mid 70's period and features a female voice that helped make Marc Bolan and T-Rex become the iconic name that music fans remember. The band are: guitarist Graham Oliver, Jay Spargo lead vocal. Dave Major Keyboards/vocal. Tony Allday Bass. Linda Dawson backing vocal.
Mostly Autumn After being voted Best Band of 2012 in the Classic Rock Society poll and following their Best Band – Best Live Act – Best Album (Go Well Diamond Heart) – Best Female Vocalist - Best Guitarist – Best Drummer awards in the Classic Rock Society Detailed below is a brief description of some of 2011 poll, Mostly Autumn surely deserve to be called "The best band you have never heard". the amazing artists already confirmed...

AN EXTRA PINT A MONTH COULD SAVE THE PUB INDUSTRY
Beer drinkers buying just one extra pint a month in the pub is all it would take to push the British beer industry back into growth after years of steady decline, according to statistics released by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) to mark the start of their Great British Beer Festival. CAMRA say that 38% of pub goers are visiting the pub less often than they did twelve months ago and that beer sales are suffering despite real ale out-performing the rest of the market – with the total volume of beer sold in the UK during 2012 standing at around 7.8 million pints, compared to over 8.2 million in 2011 and over 8.4 million in 2010.
The effect is clear to see, with 26 pubs a week now closing in the UK. But according to CAMRA it wouldn’t take much to tip the scales the other way and push one of Britain’s most important industries back into growth. “Around 32 million people in the UK enjoy a beer at least once a year, but the number of people drinking in pubs has been on the decline, contributing to an overall fall in beer sales. But with the price of a pint getting a much needed duty cut in this year’s budget there’s never been a better time to get down the pub and help save the Great British pub. Just a pint a month extra is all it would take.” Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive.
CAMRA’s call to arms for British beer drinkers is in support of the national, cross-industry ‘Let There Be Beer’ campaign, which aims to get more Brits drinking our national tipple, beer. Mike added, “Real Ale is a low strength drink that, in the main, can only be enjoyed in the sociable and responsible environment of the Great British Pub. Plus with more styles and varieties of Real Ale available than ever before, thanks to an ever growing number of breweries across the UK, there has never been more choice for drinkers. Why not take that extra pint a month as a chance to try a new real ale from your region?” And with over 1000 British breweries now making over 8,000
different beers*, there’s certainly plenty to choose from. In fact the number of breweries in the UK is now so great that for the first time ever the Great British Beer Festival will have just one beer each from most breweries, to give drinkers the chance to sample more brand new beers than ever before. From traditional bitters and stouts to passionfruit infused pale ales, and even a Chocolate and Bacon Porter, the Great British Beer Festival will feature both the weird and the wonderful, with around 400 real ales for the predicted 55,000 attendees to choose from. MAGIC’S ROCKIN’& ROLLIN’ MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Over the last few weeks we’ve dished out tickets to some amazing music shows and this week is no exception. Join Glenn and myself at breakfast time between now and Friday for your chance to be off to Bridlington Spa to see a production which pays homage to Buddy Holly. Buddy was of course a pioneer of the rock n roll scene and brought us classics like ‘That’ll be the day’, ‘Peggy Sue’ and indeed delightful ballads like ‘True love ways’. Together with his backing band the Crickets, he influenced the music scene for years to come in such a short space of time. Buddy was killed all too suddenly in a plane crash of course, but his legacy goes on. The Beatles, Stones and Elvis Costello have been well documented over their love of his songs, and Don McLean brought us ‘American Pie’ in relation to the man and the tragic incident refered to as the ‘day the music died’. Buddy Holly - ‘A legend reborn’ features the hits and the memories, and also British actor and singer Jess Conrad. The show is on during Holiday Weekend Saturday August 25th. To win tickets, just name the rock n roll classics we’re playing on the Music Box at 8.20 through this week and get yourself into the draw.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
This week we welcome Jonathan Morrell to our programme schedule. You can catch Jonathan on Saturdays from 12 noon with the programme 80s Rewind. He describes the programme as ‘the 80’s replayed - with all the rubbish bits taken out!’ There’s two hours of classic tracks from the 1980’s plus a more in depth look at two separate years featuring the songs that were high in the charts at the time. Last week we also started a new fundraising effort with the Great Big Small Charity Draw. Organised through The FSI this raffle has a list of prizes with the top prize being a luxury holiday abroad to a destination of your choice. Other prizes include a weekend at Lake Windermere, an iPad Mini, a Bungee Jump, a Family ticket for the London Eye, plus loads more. Tickets cost £1 each and can be purchased online or in paper. Visit our website at www. radionightingale.org.uk and click on the Great Big Small Charity Draw logo to be transported to the online sales website. Tickets purchased online have just as much chance of winning as paper tickets but if you prefer to be able to hold your ticket you can call us on 01709 304244 to purchase a paper ticket. Tickets are available now. Remember Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and not part of the NHS so needs your support to raise funds to keep the station on the air. Fundraising is a challenge in these difficult financial times but please, if you can, buy a raffle ticket and help Radio Nightingale to continue to bring entertainment to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. The Great Big Small Charity Draw is drawn on 19 February 2014.
CLUBS & FOOTBALL CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Clubs have often had close links with local football clubs as well as having their own amateur teams. In recent years, they have also relied on members coming in to view the major matches on the big screen. Viewing football is often accompanied by having a few pints so the big games can be a valuable source of revenue. And what if a club is located near a football ground? Match days can be exploited not only to bring in members but also visitors coming to watch their team play away. For CIU club members, it’s convenient to drop by the local club on the way to the game or on the way back. But it’s the home games that are the real money-spinner, with money coming in that can be spread across the club over the whole year. Hen Lane Club in Coventry, situated less than a mile from the Ricoh Arena, has benefited in this way. But now this valuable income stream is threatened because troubled Coventry City are having to play their ‘home’ games in Northampton. Hen Lane opened in 1936, has 850 members and employs 19 people but club secretary Phil Bunn, a lifelong Coventry City fan, has warned that it could be forced to close. The club has accused the parties involved of ‘playing with people’s lives.’ The team owners SISU and Council bosses have failed to come to any agreement that could keep the team in Coventry. Many fans plan to boycott away games. Hen Lane fears it will have to make redundancies or even be put out of business club as supporters visiting the club before and after matches make up a significant part of their turnover. Phil Bunn says that: “If the club moves away it will take a minimum of £20,000 a year turnover from us overnight. In the current climate, when businesses are struggling, that would have major repercussions for any pub or club.’ So, another source of anxiety for a great club that was managing to keep afloat. I wonder what local MPs are doing to assist Coventry City and all the businesses, such as Hen Lane, that rely on home games being played at home. Phil sums up by saying: “We need people coming through the door and those 23 games a year is a massive part of our turnover. It would be another nail in the coffin of a business like ours.”

V FESTIVAL WESTON PARK - STAFFS 17-18/8/13
PREVIEW
Words by KT Evans
Whether you’re into dance, alternative rock, chart topping pop stars or talent show superstars, it would be exceptionally hard to not shine to at least ten groups on this years’ V Festival line-up. With bands, acts and performers ranging from Steve Angello, Seasick Steve to Kings Of Leon, 2013 is all about variety at one of the UK largest, most anticipated summer music festivals. Spread out across two split site venues in Weston Park Staffordshire and Hylands Park, Chelmsford, the two day spectacle represents all that is current, fresh live music. Main headliner for the first day of events on the largest stage of V Fest, The Virgin Media Stage on Saturday 17th is no other than internationally renowned singer songwriter Beyonce. Formally 1/3 of US r’n’b sensation Destiny’s Child, Beyonce has gone onto become one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. Along with Beyonce, Irish Brit Rock group The Script are joined alongside Jessie J and Paloma Faith to conjure up quite the main stage hype. Headlining the 4 music stage on Saturday 17th August will be Steve Angello. A Former Swedish House Mafia member, the Greek-Swedish DJ has produced some of the world’s most anthemic club tunes we have no doubt you will have danced your socks off too at some stage. The 4music stage will also see Labyrinth, James Arthur and Fun seize the crowds along with Conor Maynard who we are sure will set a fair few hearts racing…if you’re into that sort of thing… We recommend you also check out DJ Fresh on the Arena Stage along with Jessie Ware and Katy B although our highlight of the first day goes directly to Goldie Lookin Chain on The Futures Stage… where have they been hiding all our lives?! To Sunday 18th July a.k.a the final day of V Festival 2013. Ensure you don’t have too heavy a head as the day’s line-up is arguably the strongest of the whole weekend. Headlining the Virgin Media stage and effectively closing the festival down, only world famous rock band Kings Of Leon! If you cottoned onto the four piece Nashville brotherhood after album five ‘Only By The Night’ or have been loyal supporters since ‘Youth and Young Manhood,’ the Followill brethren will unquestionably give the weekends most memorable live show…we will guarantee you that! Also on the main stage; Stereophonics, The Saturdays, Emeli Sande and Olly Murrs, each making sure you are thoroughly entertained throughout the forecasted sunny day… We also suggest you swing by to see Calvin Harris headline the 4music stage, along with Rita Ora, Kendrick Lamar, Rudimental and Maximo Park, a ridiculously awesome line-up on the second largest stage of the event. Lucy Spraggan a.k.a. Sheffield X Factor legend is set to grace The Futures Stage along with Naughty Boy and The Skints, all worth a watch at the summers most anticipated music festival. Check out www.vfestival.com for all the latest.

ARCTIC MONKEYS RELEASE WHY’D YOU ONLY CALL ME Words by KT Evans WHEN YOU’RE HIGH?
Arctic Monkeys have released their third single, ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?’ off their forthcoming fifth studio album ‘AM.’ The single follows on from the Sheffield four pieces returning belter ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ which charted at number 11 in the UK singles charts, their highest charting UK single since ‘Florescent Adolescent’ back in 2007. Having been somewhat off the radar for the last eighteen months or so in terms of releasing material, Artic Monkeys have once again returned to their chart topping thrones. This week saw the group release trippy new track ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?’ along with their memorizing video which sees a drunk Alex Turner wonder the streets in search of his 4am booty call. Coming with a Parental Advisory hash tag, Artic Monkeys not only return with terrific style, but with excitement and personality to match. Directed by Australian producer Nabil, we can only imagine what their forthcoming studio album has in store for us all, set to be released on 9th September 2013. So this is what we know about ‘AM,’ Arctic Monkeys brand new album so far… the album title was inspired by New York rock band The Velvet Underground record ‘UV’. Active throughout the mid 1960s then returning in the early to mid 1990’s, the group have been ranked in the top 20 for the ‘100 Greatest Artists Of All Time’ in Rolling Stones Magazine, and have clearly played a huge part in lead vocalist Alex turners musical development. Speaking in an interview with Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Turner said ‘“I actually stole it from the Velvet Underground, I’ll just confess that now and get it out of the way. Did we cop out? Yeah! Summat about it feels like this record is exactly where we should be right now. So it felt right to just initial it.” According to Alex Turner, the album also has a somewhat…varied set of influences. “We’ve given it an Ike Turner bowl-cut and sent it galloping across the desert on a Stratocaster…it sounds less like four lads playing in a room this time.” Other bands cited for influences within the album also include Dr Dre (“It has a Dr Dre beat…”) along with Outkast, Aaliyah and Black Sabbath. We also know as little bit about guest vocals appearing on the new album. We’ve heard a rumour former member of the Coral, Bill Ryder-Jones has been involved together with Josh Homme, Queens Of The Stone Age front man. Turner commented “His contribution to our record is really exciting, it’s probably my favourite. The 30 seconds that he’s in there is just, I dunno, it’s like something that I’ve never heard before...” Check out www.arcticmonkeys.com for all the latest.

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
At last, I’ve had a few hours on the bank this month! Not many though as a telephone call saw me off again, but those few precious hours were blissfully spent by one of my favourite venues, Shardlow Marina on the Derbyshire/ Leicestershire border..... As usual, the day before getting out, I’m full of self doubt; where to fish? What to fish for? Do I need to go to the tackle shop? (Funnily enough, the last one is always ‘yes’) What baits? Well, I decided to take the lure rod with me to have an hour in the early morning mist trying to tempt a pike before settling down to standard feeder tactics to try for a bream or three. If you know Shardlow, the pegs where the River Trent enters the marina are always a good place to start as pike often wait in ambush amongst the marginal reeds and lily beds. I selected an Ecogear BTS rubber shad and gently flicked out about thirty yards before commencing a steady retrieve; within seconds of my first cast, the lure was fluttering away by my feet as it came to the rod tip ready to be launched again when the fastest pike I’ve ever seen smashed into it! It was so quick I jumped a mile and nearly fell in! After a short fight, a beautifully marked snapper of around 7lbs lay in the folds of my net; not a big fish, but a welcome result on my first cast! I worked the lure around for a bit without further interest, then noticed a pike striking at roach on the surface. I love twitching a slow moving surface lure, especially when the sun is out and it is clearly silhouetted to the pike waiting below, so after searching through the lure box for something suitable, I was quickly back at the water’s edge. I use a fairly short 6’ 6” rod with a stiff action which is able to punch a weighty lure some distance whilst retaining enough sensitivity in the tip to help me spot takes. Twinned with a 4000 series reel loaded with 30lbs braid, it’s an ideal little set up for exploring the nooks and crannies of a working boatyard and one I enjoy using very much. If you haven’t tried lure fishing, then I’d have to say it can be one of the most exciting forms of angling available and well worth a small investment! My surface lure trundled back towards me, every vibration a sign to prowling pike that food may be available, and at the third attempt, a long, lean, toothy pike erupted from below the lure and engulfed it in a shower of spray! I defy you to find a more compelling moment for any angler! Once more, my rod hooped over as it tried to escape, but once more, my net enveloped a pristine pike which perhaps scraped into double figures and left me a very happy angler...lure fishing? You really should try it!

This Saturday’s Channel 4 cards again come from three venues. Newbury has four TV races including two Group 2 contests, Newmarket has two handicaps and Ripon has one, the six furlongs Great St Wilfrid Handicap. Saturday: Newbury: 2.05 Denford Stud Stakes (registered as the Washington Singer Stakes), Listed, 2yo, 7f: I would expect the Richard Hannon’s Chief Barker will carry quite a bit on confidence after his debut success at Sandown but I prefer to look elsewhere for the winner. I have several that have recorded better times than him last time out and, in order of preference, like: Expert; Speedy Approach; Somewhat; Shepherd Gate; Dream and Search; Grevillea; and Lone Warrior, with Chief Barker coming next. Of course it is difficult to know how good a once-raced animal could be but with so many better times in the book ahead of Chief Barker it could be worth taking a chance on the selection.

2.40 Betfred TV Geoffrey Freer Stakes, Group 2, 3yo+, 1m 5f 61yds: Aiken has my best speed figure last time out but this is his first appearance this season and he could be vulnerable to some that have more recent runs under their belts. Although Aiken should run well and will be no pushover the one I prefer is David Lanigan’s Biographer who also recorded a very good speed figure when second to Caucus at Sandown and has an excellent lifetime best figure. Others that have recently recorded good speed figures are: Red Cadeaux; Spillway; Testudo; Alta Lilea; Model Pupil; Ralston Road; Ahzeemah; Songcraft; and I’m Your Man. 3.15 Betfred Hungerford Stakes, Group 2, 3yo+, 7f: Although he may not represent much value Mike De Kock’s Soft Falling Rain gets the vote here by courtesy of an unblemished record of 7 from 7 including races at this level. If he fails to show up the reserves are (in order of preference): Gordon Lord Byron; Trade Storm; Gregorian; Gale Force Ten; Garswood; and Caspar Netscher. 3.50 Betfred Mobile Sports Ladies Day Handicap, 3yo+, 0-95, 7f: Kinglami won in a good time last time out and gets the call to land the double. Al Khan earns first reserve position followed by (in order of preference): Well Painted; Good Authority; Accession; Kyllachy Star; Noble Citizen; Dance and Dance; Glen Moss; and Chilworth Icon. Newmarket: 1.50 Lanwades Stud Fillies’ Nursery Handicap, 2yo, 7f: The pair that stands out to me in this is Lily Rules and Heskin who finished first and second in a fast-run Nursery on soft ground over this trip at Newcastle last time out. Lily Rules has clearly the best chance and is a solid choice for me here. Oriel, Suite and State Anthem look best of the rest for me and can fight out third place behind Lily Rules and Heskin.

Ice and Nameitwhatyoulike and again looks rocksolid to make the frame. Of course the draw can play a big part in these cavalry charge races but I do like her chance a lot. Pearl Ice and Nameitwhatyoulike would be dangerous opponents if getting into the race along with Al Khan, Tajneed, Bajan Tryst, Gabbiano and Nasharra who come out next best in that order from their last time out performances. With only 20 of the current 66 entries sure to run much could yet change before Saturday but Spinatrix is sure to get in and is a relatively confident choice in a very difficult handicap. He took the penalty kick himself but blazed over the bar. The visitors, who were rotating their squad throughout the match to give them all some matchtime, hit back by winning a couple of corners and then forcing a good save from McLaren. Rovers made their substitutions on the hour but another couple of corners to the visitors brought a header from Dukes that went well over the bar. Rovers were not daunted and battled away against the wind. A thunderous drive by an American forward in the 79th minute was beaten away by McLaren. Then, in the 82nd minute, a mistake in the American’s defence was pounced on by Gordon, who put over a great cross to the far post where WHITEHOUSE headed firmly into the net. The Rovers pressed on forcing the visitors on to the defensive. As the 90th minute came up a Rovers attack had the ball ping-ponging around in the penalty area before it landed at the feet of WHITEHOUSE, who fired through the crowd past a non-plussed keeper, who probably couldn’t see it, for a hard-earned draw. After an indifferent first half, the Rovers came good in the second to give the visitors a much harder game than the first half had suggested.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS SUFFER HOME DEFEAT MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday finished on the wrong end of the odd goal in three from an entertaining contest with Burnley at Hillsborough. Two strikes in five first half minutes from Danny Ings and Sam Vokes did the damage to the Owls, who pulled one back after the break through David Prutton but it was too little too late and the visitors made the short hop back over the Pennines with all three points. The Clarets arrived in S6 on the back of an impressive start to the campaign having posted a point against local rivals Bolton last weekend before thumping York 4-0 in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday. Despite losing leading marksman Charlie Austin to QPR on the eve of the season, goals have not been in short supply for Burnley but it was Wednesday that threatened first when Jeremy Helan screwed wide after Michail Antonio found space to cross. Antonio then picked out new recruit Jacques Maghoma but again the ball fell the wrong side of the post. It was a bright start for the Owls but the visitors carved the best opening of the early exchanges when Kieran Trippier spooned a high ball to Vokes only for the striker to hit high over the bar from 12 yards. Burnley went close, though, on 17 minutes. A loose ball fell kindly for Vokes but this time the Welshman was thwarted by a last-ditch challenge from Kamil Zayatte. Helan fizzed a long ranger wide at the other end before Maghoma forced Tom Heaton into a diving save from a wellplaced free kick. Prutton hit an Antonio cross into the side netting as Wednesday continued to
ask more of the questions, then Danny Lafferty could consider himself fortunate not to guide a Maghoma feed past his own goalkeeper. For all their possession and enterprise, though, he Owls couldn’t make the breakthrough – but Burnley did exactly that twice in a five-minute purple patch. First, on 32 minutes, Ross Wallace burst into space down the right and looped a teasing ball to the far post, where the onrushing Ings headed past Kirkland. And five minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead. Again it was a cross from the right – this time Trippier the architect – and Vokes nodded into the far corner to leave the luckless Owls stunned going into half time. Chris Maguire was introduced from the bench for the start of the second half and almost made an instant impact, drilling a fierce drive that Heaton saved low to his right. Home debutant Atdhe Nuhiu was a whisker away with a glancing header from Maghoma’s cross as the Owls started the second period with zest. But, with the benefit of a two-goal cushion, Burnley were always going to be a threat on the break and Wallace almost profited from a quickfire Clarets attack on the hour but brushed the side netting. Play was soon back in tbe Burnley half and Nuhiu again went close with a header as Heaton pulled off a stunning save at the foot of the post and blocked the rebound from Antonio. But on 71 minutes, Wednesday finally got some reward. Liam Palmer sent an inviting ball with pace into the near post and Prutton arrowed a firm header into the back of the net. The goal was the boost the Owls needed and almost all of the possession was theirs as the clock wound down. The Clarets still had their moments however and Vokes brought the best out of Kirkland and Vokes went close from the resulting corner. But Wednesday hit back with Maguire denied once more by Heaton and again by a David Edgar block. And although the ball barely left the Burnley half in the six minutes of
stoppage time, the Lancashire side held firm to extend their productive start to the new campaign. Owls: Kirkland, Palmer, Zayatte, Gardner, Floro (Maguire 46), Maghoma (Lavery 82), Prutton, Coke, Helan, Nuhiu, Antonio Burnley: Heaton, Wallace (Edgar 73), Jones, Lafferty, Vokes, Shackell, Stanislas (Arfield 33), Trippier, Ings, Marney, Long
DOUBLE BLOW FOR JONES MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones rued the two goals that saw Burnley steal into a first half lead and ultimately take three points back to Turf Moor. Two headed strikes from Danny Ings and Sam Vokes gave the Clarets what proved an unassailable advantage as David Prutton’s reply proved fruitless. Jones said: “I can give as many reasons or excuses as you want but the truth is we didn’t perform as well as we can in the first half but in the second half we showed there is plenty to work with at this club. “But we didn’t stop the crosses in for their two goals and we have to be better than that. We scored our goal from a similar passage of play and it shows that the art of crossing and heading is not dead. “Atdhe (Nuhiu) had two headers that went really close and their keeper made a fantastic save from the second chance. “It shows that if you get the supply to the lad he can get on the end of it.” Jones added that far from feeling sorry for themselves following three successive defeats, the Owls will pick themselves up in preparation for the Yorkshire derby with Leeds next weekend. He said: “We have plenty of ability in this squad and plenty of confidence so there is no need for anyone to panic or overreact. “The League Cup game is in isolation and I have seen enough in the two league games so far to suggest that we will be back on track. “We had a few players making home debuts today, a few kids in the squad, and a few senior players missing who we need to get back. “But we will work hard, we will keep going and we will get there.”

Sheffield Wednesday have signed 21-year-old French striker Khalil Lambin on a one-year contract. The youngster has impressed with the Owls’ Development squad over the summer and capped off a productive pre-season with a goal in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Worksop last week. Development Squad Head Coach Lee Bullen said: “Khalil was identified by the staff at first team level as one for the future. “He’s been with us for pre-season and brings a lot of energy to the team. He’s a young boy and is still adapting to the British game but has performed well in pre-season. “He has trained with the Under-21s and been involved with the first team on matchdays. He has shown he can score goals and the hope is that he can continue his development with us and make strides towards the first team.”

BLADES LOSE OUT IN LONDON MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
David Weir’s first competitive away day as Blades boss ended in defeat in the capital. Despite Neill Collins netting with a header and George Long saving a second half penalty, 1,270 Blades fans left Brentford disappointed. Adam Forshaw opened the scoring and Will Grigg added two but was denied a hat-trick by Long’s spot-kick save. The starting XI was again rotated with Coady and Taylor given their first league starts in the fixture at Griffin Park, although McDonald was not involved in the matchday squad. In the new yellow and green away strip, manager Weir continued with a 4-2-3-1 formation but the personnel changed Taylor acting as the lone frontman and Coady supporting him from the advanced midfield role. On home turf, Brentford were the first to show initiative. Forshaw fired over after a corner was half-cleared on three minutes and Donaldson got across his marker to get to Bidwell’s low cross but a deflection sent the ball just wide. In the opening half hour there was little in terms of opportunities for the Blades, a wayward cross from Westlake wasted a chance and Brandy looked lively but the Unitedites behind Long’s goal certainly made their presence felt. However, on 35 minutes the home side took the lead as a result of Westlake’s break for the Blades. Brentford utilised the space, McCormack was the dummy runner and FORSHAW had the time to execute a curling effort beyond Long’s left hand. The best chance of the half for the visitors followed, McGinn delaying his pass to enable Taylor to stay onside but the subsequent shot from the striker was over the crossbar. Before half-time Westlake picked up United’s first booking for a foul on McAleny and Long’s low save prevented Forshaw adding a second. Long was also called upon in the first minute of the second period to save
United again, this time his reactions were spot on to push away McAleny’s effort after Logan had beaten Murphy and the goalkeeper also had to be alert with Donaldson lurking moments later. United’s first effort of the half was Brandy cutting in from the right but his left-footer was straight at Button and then space on the left for Williams caused problems but Bidwell cleared ahead of the advancing Coady. The Blades then won two corners in succession and from the second the equaliser materialised. On 57 minutes Murphy delivered from the left and COLLINS sneaked in ahead of his marker to nod home at the front post - in front of the Blades fans. However, United were level for just six minutes as the home side edged back in front with their next attack. McGinn was robbed by Forshaw on the edge of the box and he laid off for GRIGG to drill into the bottom corner. Long saved from Saville following a McAleny run soon after and as the last 15 minutes approached, Weir made a double change with Porter and McFadzean introduced. The duo, though, had little time to settle before Brentford had added a third. Forshaw was again involved, this time seeing his shot parried by Long but GRIGG was ideally placed to tap the loose ball into the unguarded net. There was more misery for the Blades as moments later as Maguire was adjudged to have fouled Grigg in the penalty area, the referee appearing to take advice from one of his assistants before giving the penalty but the Brentford striker was denied a hat-trick by Long’s spot-kick save, parrying before collecting, diving to his left. Coady and Williams picked up late bookings and four added minutes saw the Blades on the attack without any real test on Button’s goal. Brentford: Button, Forshaw, Craig, Dean, Donaldson, Grigg (El Alagui 84), McCormack (Saunders 78), Logan, Saville, Bidwell, McAleny (Fillo 68). Unused: Bonham, O’Connor, Venta, Reeves. Blades: Long, Westake, Williams, Maguire, Doyle, Taylor, McGinn (McFadzean 74), Collins, Coady, Brandy, Murphy (Porter 74). Unused: Howard, Hill, Flynn, McGinty, Whitehouse.

Weir admitted his team didn’t do enough to combat the threat the Bees caused at Griffin Park, but he is confident his players will bounce straight back from the first league defeat under his stewardship. Speaking after the game, the Gaffer said: “Obviously we are all very disappointed, I don’t think you’ll win many games if you concede three goals. It’s very difficult to let three goals in and remain in contention over ninety minutes. “We are disappointed with the way we conceded the goals and disappointed with certain other aspects of our performance, especially after getting back into the game just before the hour. “I thought we were a little bit sloppy in regards to our decision making at crucial moments in the game and ultimately that cost us. “We didn’t have that zip in our play and Brentford capitalised. They got the ball forward quickly, challenged us physically and really got the upper hand.” Weir, though is sure this defeat will turn out to be an early season blip, adding: “We had to cope with what Brentford threw at us, but overall we didn’t adapt quick enough and stay in the game for long enough at 1-1. “We got the goal and gave ourselves an opportunity, but we conceded relatively quickly after the equaliser and from then on Brentford never looked like surrendering the lead again. “You always learn more about yourself and your team after a defeat because now it is about the response we get from the lads during the next week ahead of Colchester. “This is our first challenge in terms of bouncing back from a league defeat, but I am sure the lads will react in a positive manner, it is down to the management staff, including myself, to make sure that is the case and I am sure it will be.”

A NIGHT WITH CURTIS SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Wednesday 25th September is the re-scheduled date for ‘An evening with Curtis Woodhouse’ at our Legends of the Lane. Now a professional boxer, Curtis will be fighting in Liverpool for the Commonwealth lightweight title just four days before - a fight that will be shown live on Sky Sports, so it will be a fantastic chance to catch up with him on the back of what Blades fans hope will be a famous victory over Derry Mathews. The doors will open at 7pm and United will be serving our famous home made pie, peas and gravy (with plenty of Henderson’s and mint sauce as an option) from 7.30pm. There is also a free pint of house beer or house lager on arrival - if you are the nominated driver a soft drink is available as well! The Q&A session will kick off at around 8.30pm and United can guarantee that it will be one not to be missed. This will be led by Club Historian John Garrett and doubt you will find the path Curtis has taken through football and boxing entertaining. Tickets for this event are just £17 and are available from the Ticket Office on 0871 995 1889. A table of 10 can also be booked for just £150
