Copley’s Column I have had two party nights this week to celebrate my birthday, both held at my local, the Victoria in Dronfield, and I am pleased both events have been highly successful, both from a financial point of view for my pal Chris Snell who owns the pub and for me personally as so many of my friends turned out to celebrate with me. The first leg, held on Thursday evening featured top local artiste Jon Alex who was superb. He was well received by the capacity crowd, particularly his tribute to Elton John, in which he wears a convincing wig and dark glasses. Jon will be appearing at the Victoria again in the near future and is not to be missed. My girlfriend Caron freely admitted to me that she cannot keep pace with me, despite being considerably younger, and so accordingly, she suggested a cosy Friday night in at my home, a sensible decision as my actual birthday was on Saturday morning and my daughters were expected with cards and presents Needless to say, by Saturday evening, I was ready to party again and special guests invited to have a drink with me included Stephanie King and Bev Brookes, two top acts in the Cee Bee Variety stable. A deal was struck, I got Stephanie to do a bit of babysitting while Bev, who I had not seen previously, entertained us. This turned out to be a master stroke as Bev was absolutely brilliant with each song being met with thunderous applause. Guests were paying her tributes long after she had come off stage. Such was her likeable personality, she persuaded me, not the best singer on the planet, to get up and sing one after getting everybody joining in to sing happy birthday to me. I have to say that this was the most enjoyable evening I have had for a long time. I am sad to report the death of one of life’s characters, Dave Peckett, also known as ‘Santa’s Little Helper’ who in his time has roadied for Robert King and Vincent. Dave though only small had been a bodybuilder becoming Mr. Great Britain and was a keen cyclist and was an ardent follower of live

music and was loved by all. I am sure you all join me in offering my sincere condolences to his family.

Spirituality is one of the those vague terms that has acquired diverse and sometimes conﬂicting meanings. We are surrounded by Spirituality everyday. In its purest deﬁnition spirituality is that which relates to the human spiritual soul as opposed to material and physical things. It touches every part of us and is not dependant on material things or physical comforts. We have to be aware of our surroundings, see past the physical and feel the spirituality of all things. Even when you looked at your loved ones you feel their feelings and that is the feeling of a love you can only describe as Spiritual. Basically Spirituality can refer to anything that is connected with the universe whether it be celestial or not. Pivotal to this is the role of our spirit guides in this Spirituality. I believe if you believe that you have a Spirit Guide they will guide and help you that is their role in Spirituality. When I connect with the Spirit World I have two guides - a native American, and a Geisha girl from the 18th century. These lead to the spirit connections that come through for my client. Through my guides they feel comfortable with their connection. Guides erve different functions -by way of example there are: Master Teachers - enlightened beings that were teachers of others whilst living on Earth. They continue with their teachings in the Spirit World and offer services to all who want to learn about anything. Door and Gatekeepers - keep negative entities away whilst the psychic opens up to the Spirit World. They guard the portal so that the clients’ relatives or friends can enter in safety. This is especially important in another area of spirituality - trance mediumship where the medium goes into a trance. Spirit Protectors - can be called upon when we need strength and protection. I have had the same guides for thirty years.Other guides appear but I keep what I know. Some mediums have developed their sensory powers more than others. In Clairaudience a medium hears the voice of the spirit and sometimes the medium has to interpret what the spirit has said as it is sometimes unclear. For instance I was doing a psychic reading for a client when her Dad came through and said very bluntly “Annette” and pointed through the window. I asked the lady if she knew Annette. He then moved and pointed through the window to a pond -he actually meant put a net over the pond because the lady had children. Clairsentience means the medium can sense a spirit is near. This comes as a smell or a coldness and a feeling of invisible cobwebs. My experience is feeling very hot and a sensation of pins and needles in my head. I am fortunate to have all the senses. So what does the word spirituality mean? there are many answers, and I asked 20 people what they thought Spirituality meant to them. There were two that stood out: “Spirituality is a mind-set open to everything in the spiritual universe. Being open to everything the Universe offers without restrictions.” And the other: “A set of idea`s or practices related to spirit. Sheffield is one of the local authorities that are being taken forward to the second stage. Others include Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees and Wakefield. The areas have been selected out of 100 identified Local Authorities applying for funding of between £2 million and £6 million for activities that will engage older people in key decision making and shaping priorities for local action. The initiative will make funding available in around 15 to 20 local areas, over a period of up to six years, to pilot area-wide, voluntary service led local authority partnership projects to improve the lives of older people and reduce their social isolation. Awards will be made in Spring 2014. Sheffield 50+ aim to ensure that older people in Sheffield are placed at the heart of this programme of work and are working hard to ensure that aim. The objectives of this extensive project chimes with our Comic Relief sponsored, ‘Missing Voices’ programme of activities. This aims to give people over 75 who cannot engage socially and politically an opportunity to do so. If you want to get involved in this work do contact us.

The NICE Collaborating Centre for Social Care (NCCSC) is working with NICE to produce two resources to support the implementation of the NICE Quality Standard - Supporting people to live well with dementia. One of the resources will focus on what the Quality Standard means for carers, families and advocates; the other will focus on what it means for care and support providers. As part of this work the NCCSC would like to gather practice examples that demonstrate high quality practice in dementia care. They are interested in examples that illustrate practice relating to one or more of the ten Quality Statements that make up the Quality Standard. Examples will appear in the Shared Learning section of the NICE website. The NCCSC will assist in writing up your example. Dementia Friends is a national initiative that is being run by the Alzheimer’s Society. It’s funded by the Cabinet Ofﬁce and Department of Health and aims to improve people’s understanding of dementia and its effects. Alzheimer’s Society is working with lots of volunteers and other organisations to achieve this goal. Because, together, we can create dementia friendly communities. People with dementia sometimes need a helping hand to go about their daily lives and feel included in their local community. Dementia Friends is giving people an understanding of dementia and the small things that they can do that could make a difference to people living with dementia. Join us and ask your MP to pledge their support for the Dementia Friends initiative and really change the way people think, talk and act about dementia in England. MPs are well connected in their communities and can really help us spread the word. So Dementia Friends is heading to Parliament on 10 September and we ask you to take action now and encourage your MP to support us on the day.

DOG AUDITIONS FOR CRUCIBLE MUSICAL, OLIVER! Shefﬁeld Theatres is searching for three dogs to star in the company’s production of Lionel Bart’s multi award-winning masterpiece Oliver!, which takes to the Crucible stage from Friday 29 November 2013 to Saturday 25 January 2014. Based upon the children’s novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver! follows the story of an orphan who runs away from a workhouse and falls in with a gang of boys trained to be pickpockets by gang leader, Fagin, and includes well-known songs such as Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, OomPah-Pah and As Long As He Needs Me. This new staging will be directed by Artistic Director Daniel Evans and will be his third musical for the company, following critically-acclaimed productions of My Fair Lady and This Is My Family. Shefﬁeld Theatres is looking for three bull terriers, or similar looking dogs, to share the role of

Bullseye, Bill Sikes’ infamous dog. Dogs can be male or spayed females, ideally with a visible patch over one eye, and need to be well-trained and good around children and in busy environments. Open auditions will take place in Sheffield on Saturday 14 September from 10.00am at the Lyceum Theatre. Owners will be asked to demonstrate that their dogs can carry out simple instructions and behave well on a theatre stage. The audition panel will consist of Director Daniel Evans and Company Manager, Andrew Wilcox. Successful dogs must live within an hour’s drive of Sheffield and owners will need to be available to chaperone their dog throughout the entire rehearsal and production period in Sheffield from Monday 11 November 2013 to Saturday 25 January 2014. Anyone interested in auditioning their dog will need to register in advance of the open auditions. Eastenders’ Alﬁe Moon was the clear winner in the Landlord category, receiving around a quarter of the votes -

almost twice as many as any of the other candidates such as Frank Butcher or Alec Gilroy from Emmerdale. Things were much closer for the ladies, with Eastenders’ Peggy Mitchell receiving 20% of the vote just behind the winner, Coronation Street’s Bet Lynch, who received 22% of votes.

One of the most tucked away but well-loved TV series of the last few years features Michael Portillo travelling the length and breadth of the British Isles tracing our railways, finding out about the history of past times related to specific areas and meeting all sorts of fascinating people en route. In the programme he uses a Victorian guidebook written by cartographer and publisher George Bradshaw and compares how things have changed. As far as our region goes, there’s a mention of Sheffield’s history with steel, liquorice with Pontefract, and Buxton with the famous water. There have now been five different series showing familiar and perhaps not so familiar locations and stories, and the shows are finally being released to DVD too. This week my colleague Glenn Pinder, while I’m away, is giving copies of this box set away to mark the release. Each day there’s a chance to win. This week we held a collection on the Tanyard Shopping Centre at Wickersley in Rotherham and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who donated to help us raise £93.04. Also thank you to Lee, Andy and Barry who held the collection tins. It may not seem a very big amount but every little really does help towards the costs of keeping the station broadcasting. A phrase I often use to describe Club Historians is “collecting memories and experiences of clubs in the past so they can play a part in our future.” It seems that one way clubs can help bring the past more in line with the future is by participating in the social networking ‘revolution’ we are now witnessing. Some clubs are doing this quite successfully already but many others could learn from them. Whatever your own views about Facebook and Twitter, it looks like they are here to stay. The younger generation can barely remember a world without Facebook and this is the group clubs need to attract more in order to have a future. We hear a lot of negative things in the news about cyber bullying of youngsters and ‘trolls,’ for example, which can bring terrible consequences for some people. But these technological resources can be put to good uses as well. Although online, they can actually promote the ‘ofﬂine’ i.e. real events that are going on in and around local communities such as with clubs. Some management committees have picked this up and regularly use Twitter to promote their events and activities. And it’s for free. They realize that simply putting up posters in the concert room and club foyer isn’t going to bring many people in anymore and that you have to reach out. With so many millions now regularly using Twitter, this can be a good way to show off what a club has to offer and help to bring in more customers. It’s certainly a way of helping clubs to raise their proﬁle and secure a place in the future. It takes one or two social media savvy people in the club willing to set up a Twitter account and to start sending tweets, to build up a band of followers and to follow other relevant Twitter users. Conversations can be started. Retweets requested to spread the word. Photos of the club, past and present, can be added. Links can be made to the website if there is one (if not, it’s a good idea to get one!) If a club is already on Facebook, the tweets can link in to that as well thus pushing the social media presence a bit further. Interesting historical facts, photos and stories of the club can be included to attract wider interest and to get the club noticed.

Leeds Festival to our summer is…the Biffy to our Clyro, the Chase to our Status, the Green to our Day, the Bring Me to our Horizon, hell Leeds Fest is the ultimate event of our entire live calendar. With over 200 bands, acts, comedians and musicians taking to the totally sold-out weekend, although clashes are simply an inevitable part of our August bank Holiday, like the kind souls we are, we’ve selected the very best of bands to check out from 23rd-25th August. Call us your festival fairy Godparents… So, to day one, Friday 23rd August. We hope you have sufficiently prepared your competition kidneys as we have a sneaking suspicion this weekend is going to be a pretty hectic one… to say the least. Opening the main stage at 12.00pm and a group with enough back bone to get the entire Leeds crowd up and raring to go, Bury Tomorrow. Explosive, emotional and one hell of a set of lungs on him, lead vocalist Dani Winter-Bates is set to deliver a fierce opening set, securing the mood of the weekend to a certified sky high. City and Colour on the Radio 1 / NME stage are also a group we strongly suggest you check out. Having recently supported the mighty Biffy Clyro on their UK headline tour at the beginning of this year, City and Colour are back to perform their first ever British festival appearance. A special moment for bands and fans alike, you can check out the stage times at www. leedsfestival.com. Friday 23rd August also boasts a belting live Lock Up Stage line-up. Our pick of day one on the heavy metal / hardcore platform goes to Japan’s Crossfaith. Having blossomed into one of the most ferocious groups to emerge out of the international metalcore scene, Crossfaith’s version of the Prodigy’s ‘Omen’ is something we guarantee you do not want to miss…mark our words on this one. However, the first day of events belongs to one band only…the mighty Biffy Clyro. Riding the wave of their enormous success with tremendous style and class, the three piece from Scotland have a repertoire of songs so big, and so anthemic under their belts, if you don’t weep to ‘Many of Horror,’ we suggest you sit down and have a serious talking to yourself… To day two…we hope you all get to bed nice and early for what appears to be the best day of musical shindiggery at any festival this year (with a metal edge to the main stage on Saturday, we can only imagine how painful it would be to suffer a heavy head). If mosh pitting is up your street (and it certainly is ours) you can find us at the main stage throughout the entire day, opening with Sheffield metalcore clan While She Sleeps at 12.20pm. Having recently toured the US on the world famous Vans Warped Tour, we challenge anybody to give more passion on stage than front man Loz Taylor. With tracks ‘Our Courage, Our Cancer,’ ‘This Is The Six’ and ‘Seven Hills’

each a vent into the lives of five Sheffield born musicians, we assure you While She Sleeps will make you very proud to be a Northerner. Arguably one of the cities proudest exports, if you don’t catch Bring Me The Horizon on the main stage at 15.15pm, you’re going to be missing out big style…big style. With their fourth studio album, ‘Sempiternal’ landing them a number two position on the UK official album charts, BMTH are nothing short of extraordinary, both musically and what they have been through to become the best alternative hardcore band on the entire international music scene. Don’t believe us… check Oli Sykes and co out for yourselves then. If electro dance is a little more your thing, Toddla T Sound on the BBC 1Xtra stage is worth a watch. Sheffield’s finest DJ’s and one who recently headlined this year’s Tramlines main stage, Toddla T Sound draws together electronic beats verses punchy vocals and shattering break downs. We would recommend glow sticks at the ready as the BBC Radio 1 DJ is nothing short of on fire at the moment. However, our pick for Saturday goes to A$ap Rocky on the NME /Radio 1 stage. The hottest rapper on the scene, the notorious star is all about slick, energetic beats combined within his set…and if Skrillex joins the star on stage to perform ‘Wild For The Night…?’ Hell our weekend would be made! To our final day…Sunday 25th August. We really don’t want to think about the ending of our favourite festival, although with a collection of bands to heighten everybody’s mood, we really cannot be disappointed. Twisted Wheel on the BBC Introducing stage are definitely worth a watch…Manchester’s most up-andcoming take on The Verve, Twisted Wheel not only have the swag to challenge even the most prestigious of bands, but the back catalogue to match. Sunday 25th will not only be a big day for music lovers across the world (wait until you hear the headliners) but for Southern Brit Rock band Mallory Knox as they are to open the main stage at 12.00pm. With BBC Radio 1 naming them their band of the week and ones to keep a very close eye on, tunes ‘Lighthouse,’ ‘Hello’ and ‘Death Rattle’ will be the perfect sound track to the final day of events. Our band of Sunday 25th goes to Sick Of It All on the Lock Up Stage. Never once failing to give their trademark enormous set within each and every performance, the hardcore punk brigade will blow the cobwebs off you hangover if it still looms...and you’ll certainly need it for the closing act of the entire weekend, the headliner and most controversial band on the weekends bill…Eminem. No introduction is needed for this superstar who is one of the most successful performers of all time. I’ve been censored! If you wondered where my column was last week, I got pulled off at the last minute (don’t even try to make a joke) for making comments about a certain pop media mogul that were considered overly litigious! In my defence, when have you ever known me to say anything even remotely contentious or offensive to anyone (especially celebrities) in my column? Exactly. I’d certainly never say anything cutting about... let’s call him “Hymen Growl”. That said, I’m now being watched more closely than a Z Lister releasing a “sex tape” live on YouTube... The UK’s soaps aren’t doing so well at the moment and with all the controversies and sackings, Coronation Street is fast running out of male actors. They’ll be hiring any old celebrity just to make up the numbers soon. I hear Rolf Harris is available. No hang on wait...! But the latest outrage surrounding Chris Fountain leaves me cold. On one hand, yes, joking about rape is never - ever - acceptable - but this looks to me like a childish prank gone wrong. Fountain was free style rapping and it looks like a case of drunken peer pressure that got out of hand. Did he deserve to lose his job over something like this? Probably not. But, it’s not the ﬁrst time telly bosses have overreacted. Lesley Grantham was sacked for sexting a picture of himself with his ﬁnger in his mouth - wow - that’s seriously hardcore - something worthy of Dirty Den himself... If this knee-jerk reaction to ridiculous behaviour continues, all we’ll have left are baking shows and Stacey Dooley! I can think of many MANY celebrities who’ve been far more offensive in their tenures on our screens - Katie Price being the biggest offender. I’d trade one hundred offensive race raps to remove all traces of Jordan from the face of the earth. Her hideous example of a “role

Readers Review Hi guys, my name is Rachel Low and I am eighteen years old. I grew up in Sheffield and over the years I have been influenced by music which has made me want to start my own career. Anyway, I have been following some local and UK based bands. Many are very talented but the one that has caught my eye recently are The Callback Academy! Well what can I say guys this band has to be one of the best bands I have seen and heard in a long while! The members are Jonny Davis- Vocals, Lewis Porter- Guitar, Ben Legrand- Guitar, Ed Lehkj-Bass, Graeme Hawkins- Drums. Their first EP Smarter Than Your Average Bear came out in 2012. I remember when I first saw them at the 02 Academy in Sheffield and I was very impressed with the whole performance. I met Jonny and he signed my EP, I still listen to it now. The

model “ does far more damage to girls everywhere than any naive and foolish comments from Chris Fountain. Are there words in existence to describe my feelings for these ultra vapid zelebrities? I think not. So, finally this week in my all new totally non-offensive and there’s-nothing-here-that’s-even-remotely-litigious column, it’s Big Brother week with one show ending and another starting. Sam (ooh Spoiler Alert), the most boring housemate since the oyster, won the plebs version of the show - now get ready for twelve more faces you’re going to say ‘who?’ to on Thursday. I checked the word ‘celebrity’ in the dictionary and here’s what it said: ce·leb·ri·ty [suh-leb-ri-tee] 1. a famous or well-known person. That definition alone rules out ninety nine percent of the nobodies at the first hurdle. But just who, I hear you ask, is part of the line up? Well, the ultra “famous” Bobbi Kristina Brown, was scheduled to be in the house, but after seeing the UK’s reaction to Speidi, earlier in the year, has decided to drop out. This is a “major blow” to the show as clearly, without the daughter of Whitney Houston in the house, the celebrity to nobody ratio is.. well, it’s still wallowing around zero (to one). Next we’ve got Dennis Rodman, another well-known British celebrity and then there’s Dustin Diamond, which none of you will remember as the mad one from Saved By the Bell (and then a couple of pornos). And lastly there’ll be the usual run of dead end zelebs (surely someone from TOWIE will cram their ego through those doors). Big Brother might not have managed to bag the likes of Joan Collins for another year... but they did manage to get Louis Spence, so the show will undoubtedly be “fabulous” (along an awful lot of spins, flounces, and leg extensions). And when I say fabulous, you all know I mean shi... oh, I can’t say that any more. Too many people watching!!!

songs on the EP are 1. Emergency Power Sketch, 2. Dual 27, 3. Something For Someone, 4. Lost and Found. All of the songs are breath-taking in my opinion. The word have a lot of meaning behind them and often fans can connect with the songs as they have had a similar event in their life. My favourite song would have to be Lost and Found as it is such an energetic song to get you pumped up and it has a good story behind it. All in all I would give the EP 4 stars out of 5. Their newest EP Chapters came out this year. One word I would title this EP is Insane! an even more impressive outcome. The songs are 1. These Caving Walls, 2. My Disclaimer, 3. Mixed Messages. These are all very good up-beat ragey songs. My favourite on this EP is My Disclaimer and it talks about not giving up when people try to push you down which is what I’ve been taught over the years and because of that I play the guitar, piano, sing and write my own songs. My ﬁnal words to say about this band are that these guys are the nicest people I have talked too and hope to meet them all soon, such great guys. I also hope they go far and achieve all their goals and dreams. KEEP GOING I’LL BE THERE ALL THE WAY!

Having recovered both tethered fish and various amounts of fishing tackle including rods and reels from lake beds, I have a certain paranoia when anglers are ‘off their rods’. I’ve seen it again this week; I was on a local carp fishery and witnessed an angler wander over one hundred yards to the toilet block, without a receiver (not that that would have made any difference) whilst his baits were still in the water. When he returned, and didn’t recast, it became apparent he had indeed left his rods in so I went and had a word; had I been a bailiff, the angler would’ve left the fishery.....as it was, a diplomatic approach and some advice ensured it wouldn’t happen again.....but it shouldn’t happen in the first instance! I heard of another angler doing the same on a Derbyshire fishery too this week; unfortunately, as his rod screamed away into the lilies with an angry carp attached, he was too slow and the fish broke his end tackle and became tethered. Luckily for the angler concerned, others witnessed his actions and quickly freed the carp, but not before ‘explaining’ the error of his ways! It got me thinking though, what if the aforementioned angler had been alone? You can bet by his lack of initiative he would have taken no action, save for quickly packing up and going home, so how many times does this happen and valuable carp are needlessly lost? I’ve tried to see both sides of the debate; a receiver allows some lassitude I suppose to move away a couple of yards to answer the call of nature, or have a nap next to the rods, but I’ve also seen anglers travel several yards down the bank to visit a mate, nip back to the car, wander the margins looking for fish and even move swims around the lake after putting their baits back in the water in the new swim and then going back to the recently vacated swim for the bivvy! To me, fish safety is paramount and a receiver does not give the angler the excuse to move ‘off the rods’. The terms of the rod licence clearly state the expectations placed on the angler to be in control of the rods at all times, and surely common sense dictates the same? In addition to placing the fish at risk, anglers are notoriously proud of their shiny equipment, so why risk having it pulled in? It’s okay saying it ‘....won’t happen to me’ ....it could do if you are thirty yards away having a brew with your mate.... Even when fishing with a mate who can watch the rods, you (or he) may still be committing an offence if fishing with more than the permitted number, so is it really worth the risk? I’d argue not and the only way to be safe is to take the baits out every time you need to move ‘off your rods’.....remember; anglers are protectors of the environment and the fish we catch.... do your bit to keep them safe!

It’s that time again when the Knavesmire hosts its big August spectacular from Wednesday to Saturday, giving plenty of TV racing to go at. Saturday’s Channel 4 racing is completed by Goodwood which presents three races to complement the four from York, the last of which is the almost impossible Ebor Handicap.

Goodwood: 2.20 Whiteley Clinic Prestige Stakes, Group 3, 2yo Fillies, 7f: For me Wee Jean shades a narrow call over Amazing Maria, Valen and Midnite Angel, but with the rest not far behind. 2.55 Betfair Cashout Heritage Handicap, 3yo+, 7f: Richard Hannon’s Magic City gets my vote to run out the winner of this with Lockwood not far away. Others that could ﬁgure prominently are: Arnold Lane; Glen Moss; Cape Peron; Es Que Love; Jack’s Revenge; Webbow; and Albaqaa.

York: Wednesday: 1.55 Symphony Group Stakes (Handicap), 3yo+, 0-105, 5f 89yds: This is a tricky handicap but my four for the shortlist are: Cheviot; Zero Money; Above Standard; and Angels Will Fall. The vote goes to Cheviot in a tight call with the others.

3.30 Betfair Celebration Mile, Group 2, 3yo+, 1m: Shamalgan could go well at a decent price if turning up. Trade Storm is quite possibly the biggest danger to the selection following his good performance behind Toronado in the Sussex Stakes last time out. Next best then could be: Gale Force Ten; Afsare; Chill the Kite; Boom and Bust; Thistle Bird; and Gabrial.

2.30 Pinsent Mason LLP Acomb Stakes, Group 3, 2yo, 7f: Brazos gets a relatively conﬁdent vote to follow up his Goodwood Maiden victory.

DONCASTER WIN WAR OF THE ROVERS

A fine, warm and sunny evening brought these two Rovers clubs into opposition for the first time in 55 years. The home Rovers got the game underway and immediately took the play into their opponent’s half but the visitors held firm and in the 4th minute won a corner, which was cleared by the home defence. Three minutes later and some good work on the right by the home team saw Wellens thread a through ball for Coppinger to run on to but the keeper, Kean, beat him to it. In the 9th minute, a long ball from the halfway line had Brown cutting in from the right in a race to get there before the keeper. He just managed to slide in and touch it past the keeper but saw the ball roll agonisingly past the far post. Minutes later and Husband crossed from the left but Brown headed high and wide from the edge of the penalty area. Then, as the home team attacked again, Brown touched the ball on to Cotterill on the left and his terrific curling strike from 20yards stretched Kean who was equal to the task. In the 16th minute, Coppinger paled a through ball down the middle, Robinson got to it but the keeper had come out quickly and blocked him on the 18yard

The visitors kicked off but it was the home team who went on to the attack down their right flank but they were eventually repulsed. At the other end Taylor tried his luck from 25yards but put wide. Then three corners in succession for Blackburn brought no final reward as Taylor headed the final one wide. In the 58th minute, a free kick to the home team on their left halfway into the Blackburn half put HUSBAND away. He hit a cracking ball across that flew into the far top corner of the net. Past the hour and a free kick to the home team on their right was headed past the keeper by Brown at the far post. Brown’s effort was probably going into the net however Robinson tried to make sure of the goal however was ruled offside. Blackburn were not beaten and they tried hard to get something from the game but the home defence were not giving anything away. In the 71st minute a good cross from the home left by Cotterill dropped to Brown in the area but his shot was half blocked and the sting taken out of it for Kean to save. A minute later and a cross by Spurr from the Blackburn left was headed wide by Best at the far post. Minutes later and Rhodes laid the ball back for Judge to shoot from 25yards but it was well over the bar. The same player had another go from the same distance some minutes later but he put it well wide. The match continued to the end of four minutes added time going back and forth as both sides went for goals, Blackburn to get something from it and the home team to add to their score. It had been an entertaining match and, in the end, a good win for the Rovers, only their second over their namesakes from Blackburn. JUBILENT MILLERS RETURN FROM CREWE WITH ALL THREE POINTS Steve Evans and Paul Raynor made a winning return to Crawley Town after their side came from behind to win 2-1 at the Broadfield Stadium. Despite falling behind to a Mat Sadler freekick, goals from Kieran Agard and David Worrall sealed a deserved win, the Millers first league victory of the season. It was the Millers who made the majority of the early running, taking the game to their hosts. After two minutes Michael O’Connor rifled a shot goalwards from 20 yards but his effort was blocked before falling to Ben Pringle whose subsequent strike was parried by Paul Jones. On six minutes the Millers threatened again, a deep cross by Pringle was headed towards goal by Lee Frecklington but his effort was deflected over the bar. Despite the Millers dominance Crawley took the lead with their first attack of the game. Sadler curled in a free-kick from the right which was missed by everyone, before nestling into the bottom corner beyond the diving Scott Shearer. The goal killed the Millers momentum and it wasn’t until the 24th minute when they threatened again. A quick free-kick by Pringle down the left resulted in a cross to the back post which was just missed by Agard. A minute later a deep cross by Mark Bradley was spilled by the ‘keeper, the ball fell to O’Connor whose shot was headed off the line. Just before the half hour mark Jamie Proctor headed just wide for hosts, while Josh Simpson also shot wide via a deflection. On 36 minutes the Millers deservedly equalised. Pringle, at the heart of the action once again, delivered a corner to the back post finding Kari Arnason, who nodded the ball across goal allowing Agard to steer the ball in with his head. Just before the break the Millers missed a great chance to go in front. Again it was a cross by Pringle this time searching out Alex Revell, but his diving header into the ground was tipped over the bar. Again the Millers started on the front foot. On 48 minutes a cross by Frecklington found Matt Tubbs but he planted his header over the bar against his former club. Just before the hour Proctor stung the palms of Shearer with a 20 yard strike but the Millers ‘keeper was equal to the task. On 62 minutes a Joe Skarz centre was held up by Revell before laying the ball to Frecklington but his half-volley rolled just wide. Pringle again was causing problems for the Crawley defence, on 70 minutes he was fed by Skarz before drilling a shot towards goal which Jones tipped over the bar. The Owls posted their first point of the season against Yorkshire rivals Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday, drawing 1-1. In what developed into an entertaining derby clash, Wednesday struck first through Kamil Zayatte before Ross McCormack levelled the game after the break. The game was not short of chances at both ends and a share of the spoils was perhaps a fair result in West Yorkshire. The pointers from the off were for a lively Yorkshire derby with a number of firm challenges inside the early exchanges that were typical of such an affair. With the presence of towering striker Atdhe Nuhiu, Michail Antonio’s angled cross ten minutes into the contest threatened to unlock the Leeds defence but the ball just evaded the big frontman. The game, though, needed a spark and Leeds striker Dominic Poleon almost provided it, latching on to a loose ball in midfield, but was thwarted at the last by returning defender Lewis Buxton. Nuhiu’s aerial threat was apparent again on the 20-minute mark, as the striker forced Paddy Kenny into making a save on the line with a header from Chris Maguire’s flag kick. At the half-hour point, Leeds almost drew first blood when McCormack hit a firm strike on target that Chris Kirkland tipped over his crossbar. But it was to be Wednesday who would

hit the front from the next attack. Jeremy Helan’s corner was nodded back into the centre by Antonio for Zayatte, who placed his looping header over the outstretched Kenny and into the net. Following the resumption, a stinging Luke Murphy drive from the edge of the area flew over Kirkland’s goal before McCormack did restore parity. The ex-Cardiff man charged goalwards and, after a clever piece of ingenuity to deceive Zayatte, applied a low finish beneath Kirkland to draw the Whites level. McCormack’s equaliser sparked Leeds into life but in their search for a quickfire second, the Owls almost regained the lead. Reda Johnson delivered a teasing ball into the middle and but for a fine defensive header from Jason Pearce, Nuhiu was lurking in the middle ready to strike. As an enthralling final 15 minutes unfolded, Antonio raced down the left before cutting inside to blast a low drive on target that Kenny saved well. There was desperate defending by Leeds eight minutes from time as Jacques Maghoma’s strike from close range was charged down and eventually cleared by the hosts. With five minutes of added time signalled, neither side seemed content with a point as both pressed for a winner, but 1-1 was how it finished, as the Owls get off the mark in 2013/14. Dave Jones was satisfied with the point at Leeds on Saturday but disappointed it was not elevated to three. The Owls posted an impressive display at Elland Road for the derby clash and on another day might have been celebrating victory. But Ross McCormack cancelled out Kamil Zayatte’s maiden goal for Wednesday to ensure both sides took a share of the spoils. Jones said: “We played well and I think most managers would have taken a point from Elland Road before the game. “But I thought we should have taken all three points. We had the chances, we might have had a penalty and in the end we were unlucky. “We should have done better for their goal and we will continue to work on those situations. “But overall we have done OK, we are off the mark and now we move onto the next game.” Jones was full of praise for the returning Lewis Buxton, who made his first appearance of the season in West Yorkshire. The defender has been suffering from shin splints, on top of which he contracted a virus. The manager said: “Lewis was absolutely magnificent. He came into the team today on the back of three days training and you wouldn’t have thought he had been away. “Liam Palmer has played well at right back and he was superb in midfield today but it’s good to have Lewis back. “You need your senior players and he is our senior right back. “It was good to see Reda Johnson back as well from the bench. Again, it looked as if he had never been away.”

Lewis Buxton has endured a summer of frustration with illness and injury but the defender is now back in the frame after making his comeback last weekend. The 2012/13 SWFC Player of the Year was sidelined with Shin Splints before contracting a virus that has kept the 29year-old out of action until the Yorkshire derby with Leeds last time out. But now back in the swing of things, Buxton is keen to make up for lost time with a run of first team games. He told ‘Wednesday’: “It’s been frustrating to say the least. Shin splints are very painful and in Portugal I had to stop completely. “Then, just as I was getting back into the swing of things, I had a virus. It was bizarre. I don’t know what it was but it knocked me out for a week. “But I’m fine now and glad to be back. It was a local derby last Saturday and straight in at the deep end. You know you’re going to be struggling a bit not having had a full pre-season but if you get the opportunity to play, you’re going to take it.” With one game under the belt, Buxton is hopeful many more will follow without interruption – kicking off on Saturday against Millwall. He added: “I’m like every other player, I just want to play. It was a good point we earned at Leeds and on another day we might have had all three. United’s progress under David Weir’s stewardship continued with a point in Saturday’s home game. However, the Blades had to hit back from a first half setback with Freddie Sears giving Colchester the lead. Harry Maguire, though, netted his second goal of the season with a 30-yard shot, which was helped considerably by a mistake from visiting goalkeeper, Sam Walker. Manager Weir made three changes to his starting line-up, McMahon came in for his first start of the season, McGinty was handed a debut and McFadzean was recalled. There were also changes on the bench, as well as Westlake and McGinn, Johns, a summer recruit, and 17-year-old Academy striker, Eyre, were part of the squad. McMahon and McGinty slotted into the full-back roles, whilst early in the encounter it appeared that McFadzean was operating the advanced role in front of the central midfield duo of Coady and Doyle. United’s keep possession philosophy was evident again from the opening minutes and it resulted in the first chance. A very patient build up involving Maguire, Collins, Doyle, Murphy, McFadzean and Brandy saw McMahon cut in and curl just wide with his left foot. McMahon also hit a 35-yard free-kick which was wide. The signs were encouraging. McFadzean almost connected with a Brandy cross, whilst the latter was inches away from nudging home a McMahon centre. Then, on 25 minutes, McGinty’s header from McMahon’s cross earned United a corner, from which Colchester capitalised. The visitors broke out of defence and found themselves with a three-on-two situation and Watt timed his pass to allow SEARS to slot past Long and into the corner of the net. Colchester had an opportunity to add to their tally soon after when Eastmond’s free-kick was flashed back across goal by Eastman and then Dickson long-range shot was just wide. Coady picked up the game’s first booking as half-time approached, following a foul, but the Blades did get back on level terms

before the interval, with a little help from the visiting goalkeeper. From another patient build up, a foul in midfield allowed Brandy to take a quick set-piece, laying off to MAGUIRE, whose 30-yard shot was fumbled by Walker into his own net. Colchester won a couple of free-kicks in injury-time at the end of the first half but felt aggrieved that they should have had another when referee Clark blew his whistle for the interval, which resulted in Watt picking up a booking. The Blades began the second period well and the first two opportunities were created by McMahon. He delivered the throw from which Taylor’s shot on the turn was saved by Walker and then clipped in the free-kick which saw Coady’s header also collected by the visiting goalkeeper. Colchester thought they had regained the lead on 55 minutes but a flag was up against Ibehre, who turned home Dickson’s free-kick, whilst the Blades also went close to grabbing the lead on the hour when Brandy threaded the ball through the defence for Taylor but Walker was quickly off his line to save with his legs. Maguire was booked for kicking the ball away after a foul and Johns was another to be handed a debut when he replaced McFadzean for the final 15 minutes. Brandy was causing Colchester problems but the visitors were also showing intent to search for a winner, which resulted in Johns picking up a booking to stop another move. In the final ten minutes, from a Blades corner, Okuonghae and Maguire fell in a heap but the latter still managed to turn the ball just wide, the centre half also had a half-volley blocked following a McMahon free-kick. As the clock ticked around to 90 minutes, the Blades also had a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside when Taylor slotted home a deflected Brandy shot, whilst three added minutes in injury-time could not produce a winner. David Weir has warned the Blades not to underestimate Joe Dunne’s Colchester United side at the weekend. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash against the U’s, Weir remarked: “There are no easy games in this division, whether that is at home or away, but we have to utilise Bramall Lane and our supporters. “Saturday will be a tough game. Colchester will come here determined to continue their excellent start in the league. “You only have to look at their squad to see they have players with a lot of potential who have moved to for firstteam football from top Premiership clubs. They also have some experienced League One performers and, no doubt, they will think they can hurt us in certain areas. “What I am focusing on is working on aspects of our play and identifying areas that will put Colchester on the back foot and allow us to gain the upper hand. “We know we will have to be at our best to win the game, but the confidence amongst the squad hasn’t deteriorated because of the loss at Brentford and come 3pm on Saturday we will be raring to go again.” Saturday’s game against Colchester is the Blades first family day of the season with tickets only £10 adults, £5 concessions and just £1 for under 16s in all areas of the ground. David Weir insists United’s League One campaign remains very much in its infancy, but he believes improvement will become noticeable as the season progresses. Speaking after the 1-1 stalemate with Colchester United at the weekend, Weir remarked: “It is a compliment to Sheffield United that teams come to Bramall Lane to be resilient and focus on containing us. “What we have to adjust to is breaking a defence down, we will create more chances with time and will also become more ruthless in front of goal.” “Lyle (Taylor) got another full game under his belt and a lot of the others are starting to understand what it is like to play under the expectation of a club like this. “Callum (McFadzean) gave it his all, there was plenty to be positive about and aspects to work on, but it is my belief to focus on the positives and that gives the lads the confidence and determination to improve.” After sharing the points with the U’s, Weir reflected on Kevin McDonald’s departure, but preferred to focus on the players he has at his disposal to fill the void left by the Scotsman. He continued: “Kevin leaving has had an impact on us because he is a very good player, but we have to work with the lads we have at the moment and we have some exciting attacking talent within the squad. “We have to experiment and develop, we have to give everyone a chance to stake a claim, within reason, and then we will look for some stability as we continue to learn and progress.”

David Weir was keen to takes the positives from Saturday’s stalemate with Colchester United at Bramall Lane. Harry Maguire cancelled out Freddie Sears’s early opener on the stroke of half-time, but Weir was left to rue the decision to disallow what appeared to be a legitimate Lyle Taylor strike in the final minute. Giving his initial thoughts on the 1-1 draw, the Gaffer remarked: “I thought we should have nicked it to be honest. As the game went on we were the team that was pressing. “It was quite open towards the end and although Colchester will think they could have won it themselves, I think it was us that finished on the front foot. We really pushed on for the winner and but for that offside flag we would have won it. “There are many positive from this performance though, most of all the five U21s that started the game. I was encouraged by what they contributed and experienced players like Tony McMahon, Neill Collins and Michael Doyle will never let anyone down and they guided the youngsters through.” Weir was happy with the goal his team scored, but dissapointed with the build-up to the U’s opener at the other end, he added: “We didn’t use the ball wisely and got caught on the counter attack, but we will learn from these mistakes. It was just a little bit of naivety regarding the situation and the decisions we made and we got punished by conceding a goal. “I thought we came into the game after the goal though and I was pleased with our response. We did the right things and deservedly got the equaliser before half-time. “We have been urging the lads to shoot from distance and work the goalkeeper, people like Lyle Taylor will be quick to pounce on any rebounds and we saw what can happen if you hit the target.
