MOVING HOME WITH YOUR PET Planning, packing and nervous expectation – moving house is one of the most stressful experiences in life. But, just imagine how confusing this time is for our pets, who cannot understand why all these changes are taking place. Taking time to carefully plan your pet’s move will ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. PDSA veterinary surgeon Elaine Pendlebury said: “Worrying about an anxious pet who is struggling to settle into a new environment can really take the shine out of enjoying your new home. “Moving house can be difficult, but by following a few simple tips responsible owners can help their pets feel much more relaxed, which can only help their humans to remain calm and enjoy the experience.” Elaine said in order to do this it is important to consider your pet’s personalities – nervous, fretful animals who respond badly to strange scents and noises may actually benefit from being kenneled during the move. If this sounds like your pet’s personality, ensure their vaccinations are up to date prior to the move and give yourself enough time to find a cattery or kennel you like and trust. Knowing your furry friend is being well looked after in a pleasant environment will give you one less thing to worry about during the difficult time. Here are some simple tips follow: • Leading up to the day of the move gradually move your pets' food bowls, toys and beds into one room. This will mean on moving day they should be happy to remain in one secure room for a number of hours. This will help keep them away from accidents, scary people or strange noises and stop them from escaping. • Do not feed pets close to travelling time, this could cause travel sickness. Small of their usual food throughout the day will help to keep your pet occupied and be gentler on their tummy if they are feeling anxious. • When you arrive at the new house, place some of your pet’s toys and bedding into one room with a piece of clothing that smells of you and spend some time with them to help them settle. • Ensure your house is secure before letting them out. In addition, dogs could be walked around the house on a lead and let into the garden once it has been secured. But cats should be kept indoors for a few weeks to help them become familiar with the house and surrounding area – walking them in the garden using a small harness and lead can also be useful. • Your vet can recommend a pheromone diffuser which can help your pet feel more relaxed. Pheromones are natural scents that are undetectable to humans, but can help keep your pet calm. Your vet will be able to let you know if this would help your pet. • Ensure your pets are microchipped and remember to let the microchip company know about your new address. Microchipping will greatly increase the chances finding pets should they escape during the move.

Copley’s Column Our regular Thursday morning celebrity breakfast at the Chantry Hotel was excellent this week with a surprise visit from top vocalist and regularly seen performing on BBC , Linda Watts, who treated us to her fantastic vocal talent, accompanied by the very pretty and multi-talented Caroline Dennis, daughter of top comedian Bobby Dennis. Roy and Jackie Toaduff, showbusiness legends and owners of the Chantry, have, at enormous expense installed a beautiful ornate grand piano for our weekly post breakfast singalong, and with regular top pianists, Terry Herrington, Caroline and Bobby Dennis doing it justice, it is a joy to behold. We were also treated to some fantastic magic from regular Billy Flywheel who performs some amazing tricks. I really fancied my chances of winning our weekly quiz, set by Bobby Dennis, as our regular champion, comedian Bobby Knutt was not in attendance, but was soundly thrashed. My dilemma as to where to take my girls on Saturday night was easily solved when I learned that top band, the three FB’S were booked to appear at Hilltop Sports and Social Club, and we were not disappointed as these very talented lads put on a show that had the capacity crowd clapping and shouting for more. Having just returned from Majorca flying with Ryanair, I was shocked to see a documentary on television claiming that safety was compromised by pilots working for Ryanair being instructed to take on the minimum amount of fuel and citing incidents that head office pressure to arrive on time, even when the flights have been delayed have caused as many as five planes trying to land at the same time, a situation made more dangerous with little fuel left. A number of pilots were interviewed, although preferring to remain anonymous
for fear of losing their jobs, each expressing concern on safety grounds. An article in this week’s Mail on Sunday also criticises the company for extracting as much money as possible by offering bonuses to ground staff who identify oversize or overweight hand luggage for which passengers are charged £60, incentives for selling priority boarding passes and hard selling ‘e’ cigarettes. The veracity of this programme and subsequent article in the paper cannot be guaranteed, but I imagine that neither would have been aired without their respective legal teams giving the green light to proceed.

LADBROKES ST LEGER FESTIVAL 2013 The Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is the jewel in the crown of horse racing in Yorkshire and the showpiece of Doncaster’s social calendar. Enjoy a delightful blend of history, quality racing and a spectacular programme of live entertainment across the four-day racing extravaganza. Since the first running in 1776, Crowds from all over the country have been drawn to Doncaster to capture a taste of the unique atmosphere. The famous Festival is steeped in history and one of the highlights of the Flat racing calendar. The crescendo builds to Saturday, where the flagship event – the illustrious Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes – takes centre-stage. The meeting also features a number of high-class supporting races, highlights being the DFS Park Hill Stakes on DFS Ladies’ Day Thursday, the Speedy Services Doncaster Cup on Friday and the Ladbrokes Portland Handicap on Saturday. Doncaster Racecourse have kindly donated a pair of Grandstand tickets for the Thursday and Friday of the St. Ledger Festival to two lucky readers. Thursday DFS Ladies’ Day is style central. The ultimate in glitz and glamour, this is one of South Yorkshire’s biggest social occasions. Doncaster’s state-of-the-art Grandstand is filled with a menagerie of fascinators; and a kaleidoscope of colour cascades across Town Moor, as the ladies strut their stuff for day two of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival. Get your heels at the ready, girls! Naturally there will be an abundance of the finest fillies out in force, hoping to secure the Best Dressed Lady crown. The winner of the coveted title will then go on to represent Doncaster Racecourse in the final of Yorkshire’s Best Dressed Lady 2013 – to be held at our very own Racing Post Trophy meeting on 26th October. The feature race is the DFS Park Hill Stakes for filles and mares. The race was won last year by Wild Coco – trained by one of the legends of racing history, Sir Henry Cecil, who sadly passed away this year. The third horse on that day, Estimate, is owned by the Queen and subsequently went on to provide Her Majesty with an historic first victory in the Ascot Gold Cup at the Royal Meeting recently.

GCSEs: Who needs them? I’ve been lying on my CV for years and nobody has checked them. B in maths? I can’t even count to B. After her veil set on fire, she chipped a tooth on the church steps, and spilt the post wedding meal all over her dress, my wife sat there in tears. “Don’t worry love” I said. “We’ve got it all on video. We’re going to make a fortune from You’ve been framed.” What’s worse than having the surname Potato? Having the first name Jackie. I used to tell people I ran the length of a Marathon each day. Then somebody changed the name to Snickers. My little cousin has been diagnosed with an unusual case of OCD where all he does all day is organise dinner plates by the year they were made, It’s an extremely rare dish-order I always struggle with what to say to people at a funeral. My friend told me say, “I’m sorry for your loss”, and then move on. So I went up to the widow, and confidently said, “I’m sorry for your loss, move on” My teenage son threw the chemistry set I bought him onto the floor. If he thinks he’s going to get a reaction that way, he’s got a lot to learn. I wish I partied as much as my neighbours dog did. He’s had a lampshade on his head for like 2 weeks straight now. I thought I’d dug up an unknown species of dinosaur in my back garden. Excitedly I phoned the Natural History Museum, but it turned out to be a fossil arm. I got pulled over by the police today and the officer said, “Do you know how fast you were going?” I replied, “Obviously not fast enough.” I just saw an advert in a window for a driving instructor which said “Learn to drive with the professionals.” I thought to myself “Times must be hard for Bodie and Doyle.”

TECHY TEA PARTY IN FARGATE ON 4TH SEPTEMBER, 4PM - 6PM
TimeBank is helping EE (T-Mobile & Orange) with its Digital Skills Volunteering programme which is all about building digital skills and sharing connectivity with everyone in the UK. They have held several Techy Tea parties across the UK working with Age UK and Age Concern branches. There are more planned throughout the second half of the year and EE would like to work with a range local organisations. The aim of a Techy Tea Party (TTP) is to assist an older person with getting more from technology, over a cup of tea, in an informal setting. We bring together a group of older people with a group of employee volunteers. The older people are asked to bring any technology that they may have issues with. For example, they might bring their mobile phones or digital camera and will have questions and queries around how to send a text message or how to download pictures from their camera. These sessions really make a difference to older people’s confidence in using equipment that many of us take for granted. Places must be booked, please email: julie@sheffield50plus.org.uk
SHEFFIELDʼS ACTION PLAN AGAINST FLOODING
A draft plan to manage the risks of flooding in Sheffield and potentially attract additional external funding has been published for people to have their say. The plan has been developed after the city suffered so badly during the infamous floods of 2007 and there have been other occasions in recent years when the flood defences were fully tested. The draft Flood Risk Management Strategy for Sheffield has now been published by Sheffield City Council and the Environment Agency following wide-ranging consultation with local people, organisations and businesses. The aim of the strategy is to ensure the city targets the main problem areas and that resources are being used to the best effect. You can view the proposals online: www.sheffield. gov.uk/environment/flooding Hard copies may be viewed shortly at First Point in the city centre and in public libraries. Anyone having other enquiries about the strategy can phone 0114 273 5847 during normal office hours. Comments will be welcomed until the end of September. It is expected that the final document will go to the Council’s Cabinet for approval in November.

Welcome to our August edition of the Wedding Guide.
I thought it was too good to be true. Two weeks of uninterrupted sunshine in July and that’s it, it looks like the summer is over already, but that’s the lovely British weather for you as we are now enjoying April showers in August. It’s bizarre I know but don’t let that spoil any of your wedding plans. If you are getting married soon, I hope the sun will shine down on you whatever the weather. Wedding Vows, a new bridal boutique, has recently opened in Rotherham. Paula Wright who is well known in the business, has a new contemporary stylish showroom at Hellaby. She has a wonderful range of wedding dresses and menswear with a relaxing lounge area with complimentary drinks for everyone. Loveona Bridal at Neepsend is run by Michelle Garretty and her team who invite you to call as a client and leave as a friend. Michelle offers more than the usual bridal wear, she has florists, beauty, cars, cakes and much more on offer. She can also decorate your venue so Loveona is well worth a visit. Michelle and Marie will certainly look after you. There are some beautiful venues with landscaped gardens, that are just perfect for those all important photographs, and contemporary
outdoor seating areas for your guests to relax. Whitley Hall, Sitwell Arms at Renishaw, Wortley Hall and Clumber Hotel and Spa are just a few offering theses facilities. Most hotels can conduct a civil service within their grounds, so it all depends on exactly what suits you. A simple registry office event, a civil ceremony or a church wedding can all be followed with a reception to suit all tastes and budgets. A lot of venues are now offering All Inclusive packages at set prices, which makes it much easier when you are trying to stick to a budget, as some of these packages include venue décor, flowers, cakes and photography. The Kiveton and Wales village hall can offer you just that so if you want to pay one price and have it all under one roof, give them a call. The Sitwell Arms at Renishaw are proud sponsors of our Wedding Guide and they provide quality facilities at affordable prices. It is a beautiful 18th century coaching inn with landscape surroundings, perfect for the photographs. The Consort Hotel in Thurcroft has been recently refurbished to a high standard. The staff there will be happy to show you around their venue. I want to hear your stories, your dilemmas, your highs and your lows. If you have some advice
to pass on, please let us know. I want to hear all about it and so do the other readers. I would also like to put some photos in this feature, so if you would like your wedding pictures in the Mercury, Send your success stories, or photographs to mandy@mercurynewspaper. co.uk
The next Wedding Guide, will be out on Wednesday 25th September. Good luck with the planning, and don’t forget to call our experts for friendly advice and help, and tell them you saw them in the Mercury
Finally I would like to congratulate our good See you next month, Mandy friend Vicky Louise who got married on 22nd June, Vicky works regularly with The Mercury, so best wishes from all of us She is the first bride to send us some photographs so thank you Vicky for these, dosent she look beautiful?

A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES The Arena is now entering the final stages of its multimillion pound refurbishment programme. The new seats are in place, plexi-glass arrived, food & drink stands and toilet facilities are nearing completion and work is starting on the new menus. Ahead of the building re-opening with the Steelers v Nottingham ice hockey clash on the 8th September we take a look at some of the venues highlights from the last 22 years. Some of the legendry superstars to grace the stage in Sheffield over the last 22 years include Stevie Wonder, Luciano Pavarotti,

Elton John, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Take That, Diana Ross, Oasis, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Beyonce, Lady GaGa, One Direction and Michael Buble...the list goes on...and on. Then there’s been the sporting greats, from trophy winning Sheffield Steelers to boxing world title fights and darts heroes like Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor. Not only musical and sporting stars have graced the Arena. Some of the most unusual events at the venue have seen Cybermen marching through the audience at Doctor Who The Live Tour; 20 life-sized dinosaurs the largest of which the Brachiosaurus, was 36 feet tall and 56 feet from nose to tail & weighing in at 1.6 tons roaming the Arena floor in Walking With Dinosaurs; Seeing the Arena transformed into Gotham City for
Batman Live; One of the most watched operatic productions in the World Madam Butterfly saw the entire production staged on walkways which crisscrossed a Japanese water garden covering the whole 100 meters of the arena floor. In fact to date the Arena has hosted over 2700 events that have been seen by over 14.5 million people, averaging 122 performances each year, bringing over 650,000 customers through the door annually for the past 22-years. A selection of the venues biggest memories include:Status Quo entered the record books when they played four shows in one day, starting at the Arena in Sheffield at 3pm, then with a series of helicopters and planes flew to Glasgow then Birmingham before closing at Wembley Stadium. Bryan Adams recorded the video

to his hit single There Will Never Be Another Tonight here at the Arena. In 1992 Eric Cantona made his only appearance in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt when he played in a six-a-side fixture against Baltimore Blast. The building’s longest running show was Les Miserables at 35 performances over a four-week period in May/June 1999. It was the first time the production had ever been staged in an Arena. Paul McCartney was forced to reschedule the second night of his two concerts at the Arena, the first time he had ever been forced to postpone a show due to his illness & the Arena still have a photo of him in their offices leaving the venue on his tour bus holding a note apologising to fans. Oasis played their first ever Arena gig at the Sheffield Arena in April 1995. They not only debuted the What’s The Story, Morning Glory? on stage that night, but Noel Gallagher started writing the song the night before and finished it off in the dressing room then played it on stage for the first time in Sheffield. The biggest audience to watch an event hosted at the Arena was in June 2007 when the venue hosted the IIFA Awards Ceremony. The show is often described as the Bollywood Oscars was seen by 500 million people in over 110 different countries. In December 2009 all the great and good of the sporting world descended on Sheffield for the BBC Sports Personality of The Year Awards where Sheffield’s own Jessica Ennis-Hill won the loudest reception of the night to go with her third place behind Jenson Button & Ryan Giggs. Simon Bailey, the venue’s Marketing Manager who has worked at the venue for the past 20 years, recalls his most memorable show was an R.E.M. concert in February 2005. He says: “Whilst the support band were playing the promoter informed us that an ambulance was required for guitarist Mike Mills who had a severe infection and was unable to stand and that R.E.M. would be unable to play their set. “After much discussion front man Michael Stipe and guitarist Peter Buck went on stage to inform the sell-out crowd of what had happened and that they would need to reschedule the show, but as way of an apology they would play four acoustic songs. This turned what could have been a very difficult situation into one of the most moving and unique Arena experiences. No amps or any other musicians just the front man and a guitarist bringing the house down with the acoustic renditions of The One I Love, Leaving New York, I’ve Been High and Losing My Religion. The capacity crowd left to return in June - just another day in the office.” He says of the future: “When we re-open we will have two firsts for the venue. Miranda Hart is the first ever female comedian to headline a show at the Arena and is performing 2 nights; Jack Whitehall is also

the first ever comedian to play an in the round comedy show at the venue. The Arena already has sell-out Arctic Monkeys, Bruno Mars, Jessie J & Black Sabbath gigs with six Mrs Brown Shows, two nights of Micky Flanagan, Boxing featuring Kell Brook, JLS, Diversity, Arenacross, Motorcycle Trials, Russell Howard, The Final Tour of Torvill & Dean’s Dancing On Ice, 2 nights of Lee Evans, 11 performances of Disney On Ice & over 20 Steelers hockey games, with many more shows to be announced over the coming months.” For full details of the venues forthcoming shows visit www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk. A NIGHT OF FIREWORKS & FINE MUSIC MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Once more this year Magic are proud to host a show jam packed with wonderful classical favourites and spectacular fireworks to accompany them. Yes, you’re invited to join Glenn and myself for ‘Classical Fantasia’ as we light up one of our region’s top historic landmarks against the night sky and give the opportunity to enjoy an evening of fine food and music. We’ll be at 12th century Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds enjoying what’s set to be a very entertaining open air event. The ruins of the abbey will be illuminated and as part of the proceedings there’s a massive finale you don’t want to miss. Manchester Camerata will be playing a range of well-loved pieces and you can even bring a picnic too. The show is on Saturday September 7th and you can find out more about ticket availability by heading to our website at magicradio.com. We may even have some free places to give away if you join us at Breakfast time in the run up as well! Look forward to seeing you there, and catch you back on air in the morning
CLUBS USING TWITTER CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Last week I wrote about how using Twitter can be a good way to raise club profiles. With so many social activities competing for our time nowadays clubs have to be proactive in letting members know what is going on, as well as attracting new users. This week we can look at what a few clubs are doing on Twitter. Huddersfield’s Gawthorpe WMC (@GawthorpeClub) has a strap line of: ‘serves Fine Wine and Beer in the community for over 100 years. Sky sports mad, enjoying social and Live entertainment through out the year.’ On 17th August they tweeted about an event. ‘Doors open 12 pm, 20 Twenty charity cricket, pop over the field to see what we can offer.’ Over in Leeds is the Holbeck WMC (@holbeckwmc) has been in the news a fair bit this year due to the committee’s determined efforts to save their club. Amanda Griffin is often busy tweeting about upcoming events such as modern punk and ska band they had there recently. Retweeting such messages helps to word out there and brings in a few more customers. Its Twitter profile reads: ‘Music and events venue. WMC Club for members and community. Social chameleon. Tweets moderated and provided by @amandagriffin.’ Amanda finds Twitter ‘really useful for communicating news and events about the club to lots of people who don’t come in the club or don’t know about the club. Also because we want to encourage younger people into the club it lets us reach out to our target audience.’ She also finds it good for building a network of contacts and this has led to more support and promotion of the club. Over in Delaval, Northumberland, Seaton Terrace Club has also ventured into the Twittersphere at @TerraceclubCiu. Moving down South to Surrey, we can find the Lightwater CIU Club on Twitter at @LightwaterClub. Their profile reads: ‘What’s going on at Lightwater’s premier members club.’ Another example is Finchley CIU club in London (@fusc_stkildas). Last September they tweeted an obituary of a wellrespected club official with a link to a Facebook page. “RIP Stanley Starkey 22.12/1921-17/09/2012. Vice President at the club for as long as most of us can remember, we will never forget you!” So, Twitter is not just for celebrities and youngsters: it can be a good tool to spread the word about clubs, past present and future.

LEEDS FESTIVAL THE ULTIMATE REVIEW!
REVIEW
Words by KT Evans
Leeds festival…summed up in one word alone – mud. Ok so we’re not going to be precious about a little bit of sludge here and there although when it comes up to your knees, you know it’s going to be messy… and sure as hell we were right. Similar to that of the battle of the bogs (we didn’t see the campsites although we’re pretty sure they too would have resembled the deepest, darkest pits of hell), wellies, pac-a-macs and wet wipes were on the cards for the best weekend of 2013. It’s a well-known fact that Reading and Leeds festival never fail to let their punters down. Whether it be the explosive line-up put on each and every year, the wide range of stalls and entertainment tents or activities to do aside from watching bands and acts on the seven stages of Leeds 2013, hats go off to the organisers who do a first class role in ensuring bank holidays are also successfully catered for. Leeds this year? Absolutely no exception. With such a forceful selection of acts on all stages throughout the weekend, Friday 23rd August however belongs to one band only – the mighty Biffy Clyro. Having built up the ranks to secure a headline spot at one of the biggest festivals of the entire year, Biffy Clyro were always made for the main stage. Energetic, anthemic and pure masters of their craft, lead vocalist Simon Neil need not play on gimmicks to deliver one of the biggest shows of the bands career to date – instead an emotional, heartfelt set was exposed, with tracks ‘Many Of Horror,’ ‘Black Chandelier’ and ‘Biblical’ all raising the atmosphere to an almost unbelievable high. Along with the bursts of fire, mesmerizing light shows and a 1960s vintage backdrop, we’ll throw it out there and say, Biffy Clyro may well be the best British rock band on the scene at the moment…don’t agree? Check out their set on www.leedsfestival.com. To day two – easily the muddiest, most entertaining day of the festival, if by now you weren’t a doppleganger of a mud wrestler, you clearly bought far too sensible shoes. Opening the main stage and arguably one of the best sets of the bank holiday shindig, Sheffield’s While She Sleeps had a lot to contend with prior to their huge live performance. Firstly, how successful would a brutal metalcore show go down on such an enormous setting? Would the audience react to the fierce nature of their tracks in a positive or negative manor? Simply, could they pull it off? And the answer, of course they bloody could! With pride and

passion rippling through the very epicentre of the five pieces bones, their set was an anthemic, rip rawring dedication of their journey to arrive at main stage Reading and Leeds. Tracks ‘This Is The Six,’ ‘Our Courage Our Cancer’ and ‘Seven Hills’ instigated some serious mosh pits along with bassist Mat Welsh climbing his way into the crowd to play on a sea of hands, however lead vocalists, Laurence Taylors, personal thanks to the audience who turned up at their 12.20pm show ensured While She Sleeps are a group very difficult to forget. Sheffield is all about one thing…brutal, heavy music. Flying the flag for the North, Steel Cities finest Bring Me The Horizon not only safeguarded this central message, but also brought to life a brand new one…BMTH are the best band to emerge out of Sheffield. Although alternative metalcore may not be to everybody’s taste, Oli Sykes and co delivered a forty five minute set full to bursting with their trademark enormity and ear-splittingly intricate tracks. Opening with the first single off their recently released forth studio album ‘Sempiternal,’ ‘Shadow Moses’ soon turned into ‘Chelsea Smile,’ mosh pitters siren to ‘get the hell into the pit.’ Sporting some pretty fine animal face paints, the five piece are always guaranteed to bring with them chaos wherever they find themselves performing. Commanding his crowd with such force and strength only the Messiah could relate to, Oli Sykes’s orders to ‘open this f***** circle up,’ ‘everybody sit the f*** down’ and ‘ I don’t want to see anybody standing still,’ although it wouldn’t be fair to say the bands success is solely down to him, with such presence whilst throwing himself about on stage, it’s easy to see how people believe BMTH could quickly become the biggest international alternative metalcore group. The final day of a festival is always a sad one for all – it means you can no longer get up at 11am and turn straight to a can of Strongbow or find yourself believing it is totally acceptable to walk round broad day light in an owl onesie. Although by now, chances are you did not want to be throwing yourself around in a muddy field, Sick Of It All produced an unforgettable show to a packed out Lock Up Stage. Following these, Tomahawk, a fierce punk rock group with bite and charisma in abundance. Chase and Status on the main stage produced their trademark anthemic hits, along with Eminem (although we do have a sneaking suspicion he was miming?!) who killed it with his slim, Shady infamous tracks to an audience both covered in dirt and high on cloud nine. Leeds Festival, you’ve don’t it again…now to suffer with post festival flu!!!

staying the whole night (but slipping away before it gets light)... You’ve got Lauren Harries, who frankly defies description and by stuart renton doesn’t look sane or balanced or even healthy Real men like cake. And, if you’re anything enough to be on the show (she looks like she like me, you’ll be overjoyed that The Great can barely stand half the time). And if that British Bake Off is back on our screens. wasn’t enough, you’ve got drink-addled, Why? Because it’s a show that is so dirty, ex Coronation Street star, Bruce Jones, and it might as well be food porn. There’s man-hungry, Courtney Stodden, who married nothing better than having glistening a fifty one year old at the tender age of just cherries thrust in your face in glorious sixteen. But it wasn’t for the money, mind; it high definition and in seeing fresh cream oozing out from every angle at the push of was obviously for love... Or something... a button? It’s proper filthy. If you didn’t say “WHO?” to half of those names I just reeled off, I’d give you a warm And that’s not the only filthy thing about the show. Take head judge, Mary Berry, she gives pat on the back, but it’s really no accolade to be aware of these train wrecks. Perhaps their off the impression that butter wouldn’t melt but I reckon she gets real dirty in the kitchen. mission in life is to point out all the pitfalls She’d lick the cream from your spoon, if that can happen so we can avoid them. you know what I mean... The Great British Or perhaps they’re just all fame-hungry, Bake Off is one of the truly great reality TV attention-seeking wanabes who have failed shows; it’s delicious and drool-worthy and to make the big time so they’re resorting to always a delight to watch. Just hold me back appearing on tawdry reality TV shows to or you’ll see me recreating my own version make a few quid. of American Pie with one of the contestant’s doughnuts.
In other TV news. I’m going to talk about Celebrity Big Brother. I know; it’s like shooting fish in a barrel, but it has to be done. I got some stick the other day while posting on DigitalSpy (I bet you can’t imagine that I would ever say anything that might cause offence) about how I couldn’t stand, well, any of the current zelebrity housemates! Why? It’s because they’re all freaks and hideous role models. With the exception of a very small number of the housemates, you’ve got Louie Spence, who, as I predicted last week, has done nothing but mince about the house and act as outrageously as possible. He’s the embodiment of all the worst gay stereotypes in one person. You’ve got Geordie Shore’s, Charlotte Crosby, who talks about her drunken bodily functions as though they’re as common as going to the shops for eggs (it’s not the only thing that’s common there, love). You’ve got Mario, The Only Way is Essex’s man-tart whose idea of fidelity is
Yeah. I reckon that’s more likely! The whole show is just a parody of itself with the most unlikeable housemates we’ve seen in years. So I’m not watching. I’d rather watch reruns of The Great British Bake Off. Now, I’ve got to sign off, as I’ve got a Spotted Dick I need to work on...

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
By the time you read this, I shall hopefully be sitting on the rocky shoreline of the South Wales coast plugging for bass and wrasse or bait fishing for anything else which comes along and I can’t wait! It’s not often I venture out to the coast or onto a boat, but it is always worth the effort when I do, even if few fish are forthcoming.... There is something about being by the sea which I find even more relaxing than being by pond or stream and there is always the chance of some fishy food! Sea fishing is seen by some as clumsy, expensive or unobtainable and I have no idea why; a carp rod offers plenty of potential for light bait work or a bit of heavy duty spinning, most ‘seaside’ shops offer plenty of rod and reel ‘combo’ deals for the visiting angler and the internet means you can almost be an expert before you travel! A decent set up can be had for less than £100, a big fixed spool reel loaded with 15lbs line (and suitable shockleader) can easily project a lead far enough to catch fish and if you do your research, a steeply shelving beach or pier means even less casting issues. Bait is simple enough too; ask at the local shop, select what they recommend and buy it fresh... what could be easier? What are you waiting for? A boat trip can be even more fun. I took my 14 year old son and the lovely wife boat fishing out of Plymouth and we had a few happy hours catching pollack, pout, whiting, mackerel and dogfish on a comfortable vessel with knowledgeable guides for the princely sum of £20 each. Many areas offer the ‘taster’ or mackerel runs and they are definitely worth a look as the action can be fast and frenetic! Longer trips with more seasoned anglers can follow and better still, you can book a charter with a load of mates (and a few crates?) and you are really on for a fun day! One of your mates is bound to be a landlubber and the sight of him depositing breakfast over the side even in mirror like conditions is sure to amuse everyone else! The impression of big hooks and big baits may not be to every anglers liking, but how about trying to tempt mullet on light tackle and breadflake from a harbour wall? Float fishing for garfish? Plugging for bass and spinning for wrasse? Bait tipped feathering for black bream, whiting and others? Delicate worm baits for flatties? Mackerel fillets launched to the horizon for rays and huss? There really is something for everyone around our coastlines and you would be mad not to pack a rod and a few bits to have a go. The scenery can be stunning, the fishing fantastic and the sense of getting away from it all, even for just a few hours, can be amazing.....give it a go, ‘sea’ what you can catch!

racing form by Timelord
It’s a low-key Saturday this week Sandown providing the principal meeting where the best races are Group 3 contests. Chester provides two races on the box with its best being a Listed contest and Beverley completes the coverage with the Listed “Beverley Bullet” Sprint. Sandown: 2.05 Betfred Goals Galore Handicap, 3yo+, 0-95, 5f 6yds: Top weight Harrison George has a decent chance of completing his hat-trick with the help of Natasha Eaton’s 5lb claim. However both Arctic Lynx and Edge Closer equalled his last time out rating on their last appearances and should go well. Others that were not far behind on their last runs are: Doctor Parkes; Tidal’s Baby; Asian Trader; Pandar; and Joe Packet.
level weights terms, should be able to reverse the form here. Others that seem to have decent chances are (in order of preference): York Glory; Bungle Inthejungle; Jamaican Bolt; Caledonia Lady; Magical Macey; and Borderlescott. Selection summary (for reserves see above): Sandown: 2.05 Harrison George 2.40 Kingman 3.15 Zibelina 3.50 Sennockian Star Chester: 2.55 Rough Corte (if absent Blockade) 3.30 Mister Impatience Beverley: 2.30 Mirza, if absent Stepper Point Good Luck!
2.40 Betfred Mobile Solario Stakes, Group 3, 2yo, 7f 16yds: John Gosden’s Kingman gets the vote to go in here. There are a few dangerous opponents however with six other last time out winners lining up against him, three of whom are seeking hat-tricks, and a few others that ran fast times last time out. In order of last time out performances the dangers are: Rosso Corsa: Coulsty; Lanark; Chinese Jade; Washaar; Silent Bullet; and Music Theory.
Last week’s results: The final runners and outcomes were:
Chester: 2.55 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Combermere Fillies’ Conditions Stakes, Class 2, 2yo, 6f 18yds: This looks to me to be a tricky little contest. If she turns out Mick Channon’s Rough Corte would be my first choice selection but she may miss this engagement so the first reserve choice is James Tate’s Blockade who won last time out in a decent enough time. Next best could be Threetimesalady who also ran a respectable time last time out. After these come: Djinni; Quatuor; Kanz; and Musicora.
Despite a few near misses and some not handling the softened conditions on Saturday the outcome on the week was 18 races contested with two winners (at 4/1 and 13/2) giving a loss of 5.5 points to one point level stakes.
York: Wednesday: 1.55 Cheviot – 8th @ 25/1 2.30 Brazos – 5th @ 11/2 3.05 Willie the Whipper – 5th @ 10/1 3.40 Toronado – 6th @ 9/4
Thursday: 1.55 Foxy Clarets – 8th @ 50/1 3.15 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association 2.30 J Wonder – 7th @ 5/2 Atalanta Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+ Fillies & 3.05 Pintura – 16th @ 25/1 Mares; 1m 14yds: The unbeaten Zibelina is the one that stands 3.40 Scintillula – 4th @ 16/1 out to me and she merits the selection in my estimation. Switcher ran a fine race when third Friday: to Sirius Prospect last Saturday and would enter 1.55 Scatter Dice – 5th @ 10/1 calculations if turning up but that looked a hard 2.30 Ahzeemah – won @ 4/1 race to me and she may not appear here. Winters 3.05 Planteur – non runner, French Navy – non Night, Making Eyes, Aquatinta and Galician all runner have decent credentials also and make up the 3.40 Slade Power – 15th @ 7/1 reserves in that order. Saturday: 3.50 Betfred TV & Levy Board Handicap, 2.05 Rex Imperator- 2nd @ 9/4 3yo+, 1m 2f 7yds: 2.40 Ambleside – 11th @ 14/1 Mark Johnston’s Sennockian Star is a model 3.15 Parbold – 3rd @ 11/4 of consistency and ran a blinder when second 3.50 Guarantee – 7th @ 14/1 to Sam Sharp at York last weekend, a run that earns him the vote here. Voodoo Prince could be the one to give him most to do, followed by (in Goodwood: order of preference): Wentworth; Clon Brulee; 2.25 Wee Jean – 5th @ 14/1 Nemushka; Tahaama; Whispering Warrior; 2.55 Magic City – won @ 13/2 3.30 Shamalgan – 7th @ 12/1 Pether’s Moon; Salutation; and Party Royal.
3.30 Golden Square Shopping Centre Chester (Handicap), Listed, 3yo+, 0-110, 1m 5f 89yds: Guarantee ran quite well when seventh to Tiger Cliff in the Ebor at York last Saturday and would merit respect if turning out again here. However, Mister Impatience ran an even better time when eighth to Dark Crusader in the Melrose Stakes at the same venue and gets the vote on the back of that effort. If both fail to put in an appearance after their hard races however the third choice is Savanna La Mar whose fourth to Seal of Approval in the Chalice Stakes at Newbury was another very good effort. Also entering calculations are: Alta Lilea; Sun Central; Royal Skies; and Body Language (the latter trio were all winners last time out). Beverley: 2.30 Betfred Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes, Listed, 3yo+, 5f: Stepper Point and Mirza ran very similar races when finishing close up in third and fifth behind Riskit Fora Biskit in the Listed Prix de Cercle at Deauville earlier this month. Stepper Point has since won at Nottingham and obviously has to have a good chance in this. However, that day Mirza was giving Stepper Point 4lbs and only went down to that one by a head so, on

FARCE AT THE VALLEY AS RAIN STOPS PLAY The Rovers travelled to The Valley Ground to play Charlton Athletic on a warm but wet, drizzly afternoon. The Rovers were unchanged from Tuesday night’s game at Wigan whilst Charlton made three changes from their game at Barnsley last Saturday. Leon Cort, Jordan Cousins for his starting debut and Bradley Pritchard came in for Dorian Dervite, Lawrie Wilson and Dale Stephens. Rovers, in their black and blue horizontal stripes, defended the Jimmy Seed Stand end where their fans were housed. The Rovers, in their first attack in the 2nd minute, produced a fine goal to take the lead when Coppinger crossed from the right for KEEGAN to head into the back of the net from 15yards. Then, the rain started on to an already saturated pitch causing water to splash up from the players’ feet. In the 5th minute, Robinson on the left angle of the penalty area had a good shot saved by Hamer at the near post. At the other end Harriott had a go from 30 yards but Turnbull saved. Then Robinson, on the Rovers right, had a go from the right but put into the sidenet. A long ball from the Charlton

half into an unoccupied Rovers half had Church chasing but Turnbull got there first to clear. In the 14th minute, a cross from Harriott on the Charlton left to the far post was met with a terrific drive from Pritchard that Turnbull beat away at the post. Charlton then won the game’s first corner but it was cleared. Then, in the 17th minute, the Rovers added another goal when Robinson got to the left byline and hit a low cross into the middle for BROWN to run into the net. Minutes later and Harriott received whilst unmarked on the home left and from 15yards hit a thunderous drive that Turnbull tipped over the bar. Gower placed the corner to the far post where Kermorgant got a good header on target but Turnbull tipped it away. In the 23rd minute, the Rovers won a corner, which Cotterill placed to the penalty spot area for Brown to head goalwards. It was cleared but hit BROWN in the face and rebounded into the net. Charlton hit back and Solly, on the home right, put over a cross that Kermorgant headed well wide. Then, in the 27th minute, the referee was called across to have a word with Chris Powell. The conversation was obviously about the issue of whether the match should carry on because of the saturated pitch. After some minutes the referee took the players off and an announcement was made that a pitch inspection would take place in thirty minutes. In the meantime the groundstaff did their best to get rid of the surface water. The Rovers players even came out forks and brushes in hand to help. The inspection took place at 3.50pm and it was announced that the match would resume in five minutes. The rain had stopped by the time of the resumption. The match resumed with 18 and a half minutes left a throw-in to the Rovers on their right halfway in the Charlton half. The rain now resumed but not as heavy. Past the half hour and the Rovers won a corner but nothing came from it. In the 37th minute Keegan was cautioned for a foul on Kermorgant. The free kick was partly cleared and the back line moved out leaving Church on his own on the six yard line. Inadvertently the ball was passed back by a blue shirt without touching anybody and CHURCH put it into the net in the 38th minute. The Rovers hit back straight away when Robinson fired into the net but he was ruled offside. Minutes later and Harriott had a go from 25yards but Turnbull saved. Then, in the 43rd minute, Keegan was booked again for a foul and, being his second of the game, he had a long walk back to the dressing room. Into added time and a free kick on the Rovers right was put into the middle by Husband. Two Charlton defenders failed to clear and the ball dropped at Brown’s feet but, in the sticky goalmouth, he couldn’t get it from under his feet and the chance was lost. The rain had stopped. NARDIELLO PRESERVES UNBEATEN RUN Super-sub Daniel Nardiello preserved Rotherham United’s unbeaten record as they fought back twice to earn a share of the spoils against Shrewsbury Town. Despite a below-par display, Steve Evans’ men showed great character to peg back the Shropshire outfit thanks to goals from Alex Revell and Nardiello after falling behind either side of the interval but the ex-Barnsley strikers’ afternoon turned sour when he was shown the red card after the final whistle seemingly for dissent. Following their first league victory of the campaign at Crawley Town, Evans kept faith with his starting line-up against the Shrews with the only change being an enforced one with David Noble lining up amongst the substitutes’ at the expense of last week’s matchwinner David Worrall, who was absent because of a groin injury. The Millers’ almost made the perfect start after just forty seconds when Kari Arnason’s long-throw was only half-cleared by a visitors’ defender and Lee Frecklington fired a fierce effort through a ruck of bodies which had Chris Weale scurrying across goal but the ball rattled the side netting. In their first foray of note, Shrewsbury stunned the home faithful by taking the lead on 21 minutes following a fine flowing move. Following a switch of play, Jon Taylor made good yards on the right flank despite being crowded out by a host of retreating home defenders. However, Taylor emerged with possession and following interplay involving Aaron Wildig and Luke Summerfield, an inviting pass put Paul Parry in the clear on the right, who floated a tantalising cross which saw Taylor power a downward header which beat the outstretched hand of Scott Shearer before nestling in the bottom corner of the goal. The home side rallied strongly and Arnason looped a header over the bar following Ben Pringle’s free-kick before Alex Revell ghosted away from his marker to meet an Arnason delivery minutes later but his bullet header whistled wide of the target. With half an hour on the clock, Matt Tubbs pounced on a loose ball before playing the ball into the path of Kieran Agard on the edge of the box, who worked a shooting position to strike a drilled effort which forced Weale into a smart save. At the other end, Arnason dallied in possession and the visitors’ almost capitalised but Taylor failed to control the ball giving Shearer the chance to snuff out the danger. Minutes later, Taylor won a foot race with Joe Skarz to advance menacingly into the box and although his cross was half-cleared the ball fell invitingly into the path of Parry, who fired a low effort which fizzed past the upright. The lively Taylor was tormenting the home backline and after Rotherham failed to clear decisively, he picked up possession before curling a rising effort which forced Shearer into an acrobatic save. With half-time approaching, skipper Craig Morgan was yellow-carded for needlessly tugging the shirt of Tom Bradshaw near the left touchline before Michael O’Connor drilled a low effort which failed to trouble Weale moments later. With the words of Evans’ ringing in their ears, the Millers’ started the second stanza with a positive intent and Revell was inches away from meeting a tantalising delivery from Pringle before the Rotherham hitman cushioned a Skarz cross into the path of Agard, who failed to control the ball despite having the goal at his mercy. At the other end, Skarz failed to clear decisively and following ping-pong in and around the box, the ball fell invitingly in the path of Bradshaw, whose dribbled effort was finding the bottom corner until Shearer’s late intervention. The Millers’ were thankful to their ‘keeper minutes later when they drew themselves on level terms. A long punt forward was latched upon by Tubbs, who calmly played a slide-rule pass into the advancing run of Revell, who struck a fantastic firsttime effort from the edge of the box which arrowed past the despairing dive of Weale before nestling into the far corner of the goal.

However, Rotherham’s joy was short-lived as the Shrews regained the lead on 62 minutes against the run of play. Again Taylor was the architect when his mazy run had the Millers’ backtracking to the edge of the box paving the way for Summerfield to curl an effort through a ruck of bodies which was saved by Shearer but to the home sides’ anguish, the ball fell into the path of Bradshaw, who calmly stroked the ball into the empty net from six yards. The setback saw Evans’ immediately make a double substitution and the home supremo was rewarded when one of his changes, Nardiello made an immediate impact. After Ryan Woods was penalised on the left flank, Pringle delivered a superb centre which saw Nardiello ghost away from his marker before planting a header seemingly down the throat of Weale but the ball squirmed under the body of the Shrews’ ‘keeper before dribbling over the line to the delight of the home faithful. With the game in the balance, Taylor comically saw yellow for time-wasting as he changed his footwear near the visitors’ dug-out before Pringle fired a superb low effort from the edge of the box which forced Weale into a flying save as the home side pressed for a winner. Mark Bradley was the next to threaten the visitors’ goal when he fizzed a low effort from distance narrowly wide of the target as he latched onto a Morgan knockdown before the drama continued after the final whistle when Nardiello saw red after being showed successive yellow cards seemingly both for dissent in a matter of minutes as he invoked the anger of referee Dean Whitestone either side of the conclusion of the game.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 LATE PENALTY DENIES OWLS FIRST WIN MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday came within three minutes of posting their first win of the season on a dramatic afternoon at Hillsborough. Leading 2-1, the Owls conceded a penalty which was converted by Andy Keogh to give the Lions a share of the spoils. Earlier, Millwall took the lead through an early Kamil Zayatte own goal but were pegged back by quickfire strikes from Reda Johnson and Jeremy Helan. And just as it seemed that was enough to settle the game, Keogh struck from the spot at the last. The visitors arrived in S6 with their fair share of problems. Not only were they propping up the Championship table, Millwall were also out to avert a club record of seven consecutive league games without a goal. And two minutes in, Millwall - starting the game in Wednesday’s away kit from last season due to a mix-up at the Lions’ end - almost did exactly that. Lee Martin advanced to the by-line and drilled low into the mix to find Richard Chaplow, whose firm shot was parried to safety by Chris Kirkland. But inside a minute, the Lions did take the lead. Martin again sent over an inviting feed from the same area and the ball was inadvertently diverted into his own net by the unfortunate Zayatte. In an action-packed opening, though, the Owls hit back and were level on seven minutes.
Lewis Buxton looped a free kick to the back post that former Wednesday keeper Stephen Bywater spilled and Johnson was on hand to nod home when the Lions failed to clear the danger. The Owls continued to press and on the 20-minute mark seized the advantage. Industrious work from Atdhe Nuhiu saw the big man find Helan 20 yards out and the Frenchman drilled home an unstoppable drive past Bywater into the bottom corner. MIchail Antonio then went close after bursting past Danny Shittu but smashed his shot over the bar before Chaplow tried his luck from distance only for Kirkland to safely watch the ball wide. Things could have taken a turn for the worse for Millwall five minutes before the break when Nuhiu was unlucky with a glancing header that hit the foot of the post and Bywater did well to divert Johnson’s rebound. Millwall emerged for the second half in their regular orange away strip and showed more impetus, asking more of the questions in the early throes. But trailing, the capital club were also vulnerable at the back and the Owls fired a warning shot on the hour when Johnson fired home from 15 yards only for the strike to be disallowed for an earlier foul on Bywater. Wednesday were then denied a penalty claim after Bywater tangled with Antonio and at the other end, Keogh headed wide after the forward found space in the box. But with the clock counting down, controversy came at the last when Helan was adjudged to have fouled Chaplow in the box and Keogh did the honours from 12 yards. Owls: Kirkland, Buxton (Semedo 46), Gardner, Zayatte, R Johnson, Palmer, Prutton, Coke (Lavery 90) Helan, Antonio, Nuhui (Maguire 67)
HIGHS & OWLS LOWS FOR CAPTURE JONES SAVIC MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones reflected on an afternoon of drama at Hillsborough on Saturday and said the Owls must capitalise on the highs and minimise the lows. Wednesday drew 2-2 with Millwall and along the way conceded a last-gasp penalty that saw the Lions earn a share of the spoils. But moving away from the whys and wherefores of the spot-kick award, Jones said the hosts only had themselves to blame for failing to post three points: “It doesn’t matter if was a penalty or not, we have got the wrong side and haven’t recovered. “You can’t do that at this level because you will be punished. We had the highs in the game when we scored twice in the first half and we have finished the game on a real low. “We have to make sure we see the game out, we have had the chances, and ultimately we have cost ourselves the points.” Jones went on to stress there is no need for panic in the camp as the Owls await their first win of the 2013/14 campaign. The manager reiterated the positives from the displays so far and added that Wednesday are not far away from making a significant impact. He said: “In all honesty, we have done enough to get something from all of the games we have played so far. “But we are not that far away and we will keep at it. It’s disappointing that we didn’t close the game because we are better than that.” Jones added that Lewis Buxton was withdrawn at half time with a hamstring injury and will be assessed at Middlewood Road on Sunday morning.

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the loan capture of young Sampdoria striker Andelko Savic. The 20-year-old has signed a season-long loan deal at Hillsborough. The coveted striker began his career at youth level with FC Basel before making the switch to Italian Serie A side Sampdoria in 2011. Savic, who has represented Switzerland at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-21 level, rose up through the ranks at Sampdoria and made his Serie A debut in January of this year. The young hitman said: “I am very happy to come to Sheffield Wednesday, this is a very big club and a very big opportunity for me. “I am a big admirer of English football, it is very different from over in Italy, it is much more physical but I like it here. “I am really looking forward to getting started. I am enjoying the training, there are some very good players here, good coaches and a good manager and I want to show everyone what I can do.”

WELLS DOUBLE DENIES BLADES ANY POINTS MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
Late goals in each half saw the Blades succumb to defeat in the first Yorkshire derby of the season The in-form Nahki Wells scored both the Bradford City goals, including a scuffed second. United created plenty of chances and had Jamie Murphy netted in the third minute, David Weir may not have suffered a second consecutive away defeat. Boss Weir named an unchanged team for the visit to West Yorkshire, although on the bench Flynn and Ironside took the places of Johns and Eyre. Bradford kicked off with the same XI that has started every game since they returned to League One. Early indications were that Murphy was playing in a central role behind Taylor, with McFadzean and Brandy wide. United took just two minutes to open the home defence and it came from a Bradford corner - Taylor produced a defence-splitting pass to put Murphy clear but his shot was saved by the legs of goalkeeper McLaughlin. Soon after McMahon’s free-kick was on target but comfortable for the goalkeeper, whilst Bradford thought they had taken the lead on 15 minutes when Wells, who had already shot wide, was denied by a tremendous Long save following Meredith’s pull back. Twice in a matter of minutes, Brandy went close for the Blades. He stung the palms of McLaughlin after a neat flick from Taylor and then was denied by McHugh with penalty appeals waved away. Murphy’s run at the home defence ended with a shot at McLaughlin, whilst the Blades were twice indebted to Long in the space of minutes. The goalkeeper saved a powerful shot from Wells after Bradford benefitted from a deflection off the referee and then a 25-yard Yeates free-kick was pushed away by the teenager.
However, despite his efforts to keep the scoreline blank, Bradford took the lead on the stroke of half-time. McGinty was beaten in the air and WELLS took advantage, using quick feet to make space from Collins before drilling across Long and into the net. The Blades made a change at the break with Flynn replacing McFadzean and boss Weir was forced into another, just moments into the second period when Brandy limped off holding his hamstring. Ironside was introduced and Taylor dropped into a more withdrawn position. The second half did not begin at the same break-neck speed as the first but livened up around the hour mark. United won a couple of corners, which caused carnage in the penalty area, whilst Long was almost caught out by an uneven bounce. Flynn’s shot looped up after a significant deflection and McLaughlin was forced to tip over and the Blades had a great chance to level on 72 minutes but Ironside volleyed over after Flynn headed Coady’s cross back into the danger area. As the final 15 minutes approached, Maguire headed wide a free-kick from McMahon and Coady’s long range shot was comfortable for McLaughlin but the Blades were applying the pressure and delivering plenty of crosses. Maguire was the first booking, on 82 minutes, for a foul on Wells, whilst United’s last change was Porter replacing McGinty. The Blades were throwing all resources into attack and were Doyle was forced to clear up an attack before Bradford added their second on 87 minutes. Long saved from De Vita but the rebound dropped to WELLS, whose mis-kick found the net. Wells also went close with a late free-kick before the final whistle. Bradford: McLaughlin, Darby, Meredith, Davies, Hanson, Thompson (De Vita 78), Yeates (Reid 65), Jones, Wells, McArdle, N. Doyle (Ravenhill 88). Unused: Ripley, M. Taylor, McHugh, Connell.
WEIR UNSURE BLADES GAFFER ON BRANDY DISAPPOINTED MANAGERS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk
MANAGERS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk
Blades boss David Weir is unsure on the severity of Febian Brandy’s hamstring injury, which the striker sustained in Saturday’s loss at Bradford City. The Walsall man was replaced by Joe Ironside early in the second-half at the Coral Windows Stadium, visably in discomfort, as he limped off the field. Weir also explained his reasoning behind the substitution of youngster Callum McFadzean, as he called for the Blades to become stronger in their approach. The Gaffer said: “Febian came off to make sure we didn’t make things any worse with his hamstring, so we will assess him in the next couple of days. It is too early to comment further at this stage. “Callum was withdrawn at half-time to enable us to get some experience on the field at what I felt was a crucial time after the restart and Callum understood when we spoke to him. “It is a tough environment for everyone, especially the youngsters, but we have to develop that mental toughness to get better and we have to do that both individually and collectively.” When questioned about adding to his squad, Weir added: “We are always looking to improve the squad and that is two-fold. We have to improve the players we already have and add to the squad if possible. “Recruitment is a continual process, we are always looking and monitoring the situation but I don’t want to say too much more at the moment.”
David Weir was quick to express his disappointment at Saturday’s 2-0 loss at the Coral Windows Stadium, but conceded the finishing of Bradford’s Nahki Wells was the difference between the two teams. The Bermudian international striker netted late in each half to ensure all three points stayed in West Yorkshire and afterwards Weir bemoaned the Blades inability to grab the game by the scruff of the neck prior to Wells’s first-half opener. The Gaffer commented: “Nahki (Wells) is a top player and his two goals were ultimately what settled the contest, in what was a very tight game. “We didn’t take our chances that came as the first-half progressed, then Bradford found that extra special moment to break the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. “That made it more difficult for us and enabled Bradford to defend their lead. So in the end that extra bit of quality up front consigned us to a disappointing defeat. “I thought it was a decent game of football, a keenly fought, competitive local derby. It was always on a knife edge, we had our chances to get our noses in front and I knew the first goal, as it often is in this league, would be crucial. “The bottom line is we are dissapointed to lose. I am not looking for excuses, we must work hard and with that will come a further improvement. “We have to become more consistent in our play and also be more threatening and clinical in the final third.”
Blades: Long, Maguire, M. Doyle, L. Taylor, Collins, Coady, Brandy (Ironside 50), McGinty (Porter 83), Murphy, McFadzean (Flynn 45), McMahon. Unused: Howard, Westlake, Hill, McGinn.

BLADES U18s SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
United’s U18s took the bragging rights on Saturday as two goals from Otis Khan paved the way for a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Middlewood Road. The midfielder scored either side of half-time to cap an impressive all round team display, much to the delight of Coach, Travis Binnion: “It was a well deserved victory; we enjoyed lots of possession, were patient on the ball and scored two well worked goals. “We saw two very different styles of play on show. Our lads showed great maturity and we certainly improved on the Leeds performance. “Wednesday offered a real physicality, but we had worked hard in training to combat their threat and the lads executed the gameplan brilliantly.” United started the game positively, moving the ball across the pitch well, but just lacking that bit of tempo and sharpness in the final third. Wednesday defended deeply and the Blades were restricted to a couple of routine longrange efforts as the opening exchanges passed without too much incident. After repelling a brief spell of Owls pressure from set-pieces, the Blades took the lead in the 40th minute from the penalty spot. Kedman was upended as he entered the penalty area and KHAN confidently tucked the ball home from the resulting spot-kick. United began the second-half in a dominate manner and duly doubled the lead after 55 minutes. Excellent build-up play down the right freed Paling and his pinpoint cross left KHAN the simply task of heading home from 10 yards. The visitors pressed for a third as the game entered the latter stages with Coustrain and Lewin missing good opportunities to further the lead. Wednesday went direct in a bid to find a goal, but a flurry of set-pieces came to nothing, as the Blades registered a deserved three points.
