Taking time to carefully plan your pet’s move will ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. new environment can really take the shine out of enjoying your new home. “Moving house can be difficult, but by following a few simple tips responsible owners can help their pets feel much more relaxed, which can only help their humans to remain calm and enjoy the experience.” Here are some simple tips follow: · Leading up to the day of the move gradually move your pets’ food bowls, toys and beds into one room. This will mean on moving day they should be happy to remain in one secure room for a number of hours. This will help keep them away from accidents, scary people or strange noises and stop them from escaping. · Do not feed pets close to travelling time, this could cause travel sickness. Small of their usual food throughout the day will help to keep your pet occupied and be gentler on their tummy if they are feeling anxious.

· When you arrive at the new house, place some of your pet’s toys and bedding into one room with a piece of clothing that smells of you and spend some time with them to help them settle. · Ensure your house is secure before letting them out. In addition, dogs could be walked around the house on a lead and let into the garden once it has been secured. But cats should be kept indoors for a few weeks to help them become familiar with the house and surrounding area – walking them in the garden using a small harness and lead can also be useful. · Your vet can recommend a pheromone diffuser which can help your pet feel more relaxed. Pheromones are natural scents that are undetectable to humans, but can help keep your pet calm. Your vet will be able to let you know if this would help your pet.

Copley’s Column Having heard good reports of his Michael Buble tribute I have, for some time, been trying to have a look at Dave Perkins, but this previously had not been possible due to other commitments. I was therefore pleased to see him due to appear at a venue I had not previously visited - the Holme Hall Inn, on the outskirts of Chesterfield. The recently re-furbished pub was very busy and I was pleased to be introduced to the landlady and her partner, who were very pleasant and welcoming. As the weather was very warm, Dave performed outside on the terrace - great for me us committed smokers! Dave, with his handsome good looks and excellent vocals went down very well with the audience, and it was lovely to see a young boy, George, determined to get in on the act, kindly accommodated by Dave. We were so impressed by this young man that we have sported £20 each to see him at a great venue, Viva Tequila, where you get a superb selfserve hot buffet and a late disco until one in the morning. Discos are not really for me, never having been any good at dancing and I have for some time now been experiencing severe pain in my old knees and hips, but there was a good one on Saturday night at the Victoria, Dronfield , where were pleased to be invited to the 50th birthday party of my old friend Linda Shaw. I have to congratulate the bar staff who coped admirably on a very busy night. Another busy night at the Victoria was Thursday night with the return of Acoustic Lily. Hannah Lily is a capable vocalist and was competently backed by popular local guitar maestro, Russ Dennett. Commencing, 12th September, live music is to be a weekly Thursday event at the Victoria, with top acts already confirmed being John Alex, back by popular demand, the fantastic Bev Brookes, also being re-booked, Russ and the Fox, Rachel Raynor, Martin Gregory and top international performer Diana Edwards. I strongly recommend a visit
to this lovely re-furbished pub, with a great range of traditional real ales as well as some of the finest entertainment anywhere. Dronfield is rich in pubs providing a wide range of different acts, with the Yew Tree and Talbot Arms as well as my favourite Victoria (it is close to my home). I sadly will be paying my last respects at two funerals this week, Dave Peckett and we have sadly lost my ex-girlfriend, Jane Hamre recently. Pubs and clubs will remember Jane as the lovely blond haired lass who used to deliver their copies of the Mercury. She was one of life’s characters and will be greatly missed. God speed and rest in peace Dave and Jane. We are all poorer for your passing.

TICKETS DETAILS ANNOUNCED FOR ONE DIRECTION STAR’S DONCASTER DEBUT A much-anticipated game on the 18th September sees Louis Tomlinson make his debut for Doncaster Rovers in a Central League game to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. One Direction star Louis Tomlinson followed up his appearance in a charity match at the Keepmoat Stadium last season by signing as a non-contract player to Doncaster Rovers Football Club. Louis has always been passionate about football and wanted to realise a dream of signing to his home town club where he once worked on match days. After discussions between Louis, Paul Dickov and Media Manager Steve Uttley, it was decided that the club could sign him and issue him with a squad number for the 2013/2014 season. As part of the signing it wasplanned that Louis would be able to appear in Rovers colours at some point this season in aid of Bluebell Wood and train with the lads. Chairman John Ryan and the Manager Paul Dickov have given Louis the number 28 shirt for this season to help him raise money for Bluebell Wood. Chairman John Ryan “I am honoured to let Louis play in my number to help raise money for the charity. I wore this in 2003 for my record beating appearance at Hereford and this is the first time I have allowed it to be used since but I felt this was a good cause” Media Manager Steve Uttley “Louis and I organised last season’s charity game, in aid Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, which was a big success with over 9000 fans attending. It was natural to follow on from that and Louis wanted more involvement to raise the profile of his home town club and Bluebell Wood. What started out as light hearted banter on text has moved on to reality, which is a great coup for the club. Our next step is to get Louis on the pitch again in a Rovers kit” Louis Tomlinson says “This has always been a childhood dream for me. I feel very honoured to have been asked to sign for Rovers and being able to help both the club and the amazing charity Bluebell Wood is what it’s all about.” Claire Rintoul, Chief Executive at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice said: “We’re absolutely thrilled and delighted that Louis has decided to continue his support for Bluebell Wood and promote what we do here. “Being a local lad it’s great to see him giving back to the community and supporting our children with a shortened life expectancy. He’s visited us now on more than one occasion and met some of our children and their families who are all so excited that he is championing our cause. Louis was shocked when he learnt that we only receive a tiny amount of statutory funding and have to raise over £3million ourselves, but it means so much to us and our children and families that he’s giving his time to help us raise money and awareness.” Ticket details for the game are as follows: Doncaster Rovers v Scunthorpe Utd (Central League Fixture) Wednesday 18th September 2013 7pm Kick off. She wasn’t too impressed with the dessert though. “Is that it?” she asked. “Yes,” I replied. “It came straight out of my late grand-mothers cook book.” “But it’s a Kit-Kat,” she snapped. “That’s right,” I said. “I was using it as a bookmark.” My own Cabinet reshuffle is in full swing. palmists combine all the disciplines when reading palms. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
Palmistry (Part One) Palmistry is an ancient divination tool. It involves the study of the hands in their many aspects. The earliest palmist was Marie Anne Adelaide (1772-1843) who was well known during the Napoleonic era. Many years ago I saw a gypsy at Bridlington and she predicted that I would have two children (true), I would be a nurse (true) and that I would experience ill health (true). She also told me that I had Second Sight (true). I was 14 years old at the time and had traveled to Bridlington on a club trip with the local Miner’s Welfare. My friend had dared me to visit the gypsy. I remember the gypsy gazing into my eyes and examining my hands, she said ‘you have Second Sight passed to you through the ages, you will be a well respected psychic.’ I hope I am! She said that my grandmother would keep coming back to visit me when she passed over. I have seen my granny 10 times in the 43 years since she died. I have always been a palm reader and a tealeaf reader but I do this for friends and local charity events.
Fingers and Thumbs In palmistry the thumbs are particularly important as they represent a person’s will power or lack of it. Thumbs also reveal their temperament and intelligence. All the fingers have planet names. Imagine your left hand (palm facing you) and look from right to left. The little finger is called the Mercury finger, the ring finger is called the Apollo finger, the middle finger is called Saturn and the index finger is called the Jupiter finger. Normal Thumb A normal thumb is more or less the same length as the little or Mercury finger. When the thumb is held against the side of the hand, it should reach halfway up the base of the Jupiter finger. This indicates someone with a well-balanced ego, who can assert themselves when necessary.

Short Thumb If someone’s thumb fails to reach the middle of the Jupiter finger base then it is a short thumb. They prefer others to take charge of the situation.
Long Thumb A thumb that ends past the middle of the base of the Jupiter finger is long. This indicates that the person is good at managing other people and likes taking charge of the situation. However, The Different Forms of Palmistry In the past palmistry was put into two sections, they can be a bit of a bully. Chirognomy which is analysing someone`s character, from the size and shape of their hands, So next time you have a party try looking at and Chiromancy, which analyses the lines on peoples’ thumbs! You will be surprised what you the hands. Today there are two further sections, find out about them! Paying For Care is a national information and advice service helping older people, their families, friends and carers make informed choices when faced with having to pay for their own care. The service is impartial, not for profit and free to use. www.payingforcare.org * If you are over 50 and not able to access a computer but can get into town please contact Sheffield 50+ to make arrangements to come in and use one of our computers. WHO PAYS FOR ELDERLY CARE HOME FEES IN THE UK?
Info from: www.myageingparent.com When you or a loved one are facing the big step of moving into a care home in the UK, worrying about what it’s going to cost is the last thing you need. Unfortunately the bureaucracy around care home fees can be tricky to navigate. How much will you have to pay? Will the local authority pick up any of the bill? Will you have to sell your home? What if the home you choose is more expensive than the ones the council funds? All these questions need answers, and there is a short, easy to read, guide on the www.myageingparent.com website to the basics which may help. The local authority will firstly assess your care needs to see if you need to go into a care home before assessing how much you can afford to contribute to the cost.

ISSUE 04/09/13
When the local authority pays As UK law stands at the moment, anyone with savings of less than £14,250 gets their care home fees paid for by their local authority. If you’re in this position you’ll still have to pay any income you get towards your care, but you keep £23.90 a week for personal expenses. When you pay If your assets (including savings) are between £14,250 and £23,250, you’ll have to pay some of your care home fees, and the local authority will pay the rest. The way this is worked out is that you pay a pound for every £250 you have over the £14,250 threshold. If your savings are of £23,250 or over, you’ll need to pay all of your care home fees yourself. However, once you’ve used up your savings to the extent they dip below this level, the local authority will step in. Planning ahead is the best way and there is a lot of information on the website*.

BACK TO SCHOOL AS 51 CHILDREN IN YORKSHIRE START TO SMOKE EVERY DAY AS YORKSHIRE pupils get ready for the start of the new school year, Cancer Research UK is releasing worrying statistics* which show that 51 children start smoking every day in the Yorkshire & The Humber region. The charity is releasing the figures, which relate to children aged 11-15, as part of its Setting the Standard campaign to highlight the ongoing scale of the tobacco problem and underline the importance of sustained action to discourage young people from starting to smoke. The start of the new term serves as a timely reminder to the government to commit to plain, standardised packaging of tobacco. Research shows that children find standard packs less appealing and are less likely to be misled by the sophisticated marketing techniques designed to make smoking attractive to youngsters. Since half of all long-term smokers will die of a smoking-related illness, these young people are at risk of being drawn into a life threatening addiction. Starting to smoke at a young age also carries additional risks of lung damage. Every year, around 4,100** people in Yorkshire and The Humber are diagnosed with lung cancer and 3,400 people die from the disease *. Nicki Embleton, Cancer Research UK spokesperson
for Yorkshire, said: “The excitement of starting a new term is in stark contrast to the reality of the number of children who will start smoking every day. In Yorkshire and The Humber alone, this is 18,683 children every year. “With many 11-year-olds starting secondary school for the first time next week, it’s imperative that we try to help our local youngsters by ‘setting the standard’ and protecting them from tobacco marketing. That’s why we are renewing our appeal to the government for cigarettes to be sold in plain, standard packs rather than in the glitzy branding that make cigarettes more alluring to young people.” Eight out of ten adult smokers start by the age of 19 and around 27 per cent of all under 16s have tried smoking at least once, which is the equivalent of one million children across the UK. Standard packs have already been introduced in Australia, but here in the UK the Government is delaying its decision to bring in a new law for standard packs to protect British children. Alison Cox, Cancer Research UK’s Tobacco Control Lead, said: “The Government’s delay to bring in standard cigarette packs will cost lives. Doing nothing is not an option when 567 children take up smoking every day in the UK. There is no doubt that urgent action is required to stop branded cigarette packaging and reduce the number of children who start to smoke.” Cancer Research UK is urging local people to support ‘Setting the Standard’ by visiting www.cruk. org/standard-packs to take two minutes to email the Prime Minister to urge him to act, or join the debate on twitter using #packetracket.

MUSIC FESTIVAL RAISES £8.5K FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS
A local music festival raised over £3000 for Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help support local patients receiving treatment for cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening disease which affects the lungs and digestive system. The festival has become an annual event and is organised by the family and friends of Paul Dungworth, who was born with the inherited genetic condition and sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 31. This year the festival was organised by Paul’s friends Lisa Mathers, Chris Clarke and Mark Finnegan. The event was held at The Miners Arms pub in Dronfield Woodhouse where Paul used to regularly enjoy playing football. In tribute to Paul, the day was launched with a football match. This was followed by a raffle,
auction and a long line-up of local live bands and a DJ. The day was a great success and was attended by over 250 people, who were kept entertained with face painting, a bouncy castle, a pillow bash competition, sponge throwing and even birds of prey. Lisa Mathers said: “This is the third event that has been organised to raise funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charity and it brings the total amount to a staggering £8500. I’d like to thank all the people who helped and donated prizes to the raffle and auction. Everyone had such great time and the weather was amazing. We are all feeling inspired to plan an even bigger event for July next year. To make it a little bit different we are introducing a seaside theme. I’m already looking forward to
it!” The money raised from the festival will be used to fund improvements that will benefit over 150 cystic fibrosis patients from across South Yorkshire who are currently being cared for by the specialist staff at the Northern General Hospital. People with the condition are often required to stay in hospital for prolonged periods to help them recover if their immune system becomes weakened and they feel unwell. Cystic fibrosis is one of the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited diseases and although only 9000 people have cystic fibrois, two million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes it, which is around 1 in 25 of the population. There is currently no cure for the condition.
Organisers of the Paul Dungworth Music Festival visit the Cystic Fibrosis Unit to present a fundraising cheque to nursing staff. From left to right Babita Devi, Chris Clarke, Lisa Mathers, Mollie Finnegan, Mark Finnegan, Trish Ottewell and Abi Johnson.

LEEDS FESTIVAL FALLOUT BOY
If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
live REVIEW
Words by KT Evans
Leeds Festival…how we love you. How we love your great taste in music, how we love your giant Yorkshire pudding stand, how we even love your portaloos…this is a lie. We hate the portaloos. Anyway…with one of the biggest festivals of the year being all about revisiting bands both new and old who you may have listened to in your teenage years or have yet to discover, 2013 was no exception with the shipping in of one of the world’s best alternative rock bands…only Fall Out Boy! The main stage of Leeds Festival 2013 would not have been complete without its annual fix of alternative rock, hardcore and metal mayhem all rolled into a weekend of filthy, dirty music. Whether it be Bring Me The Horizon or Sheffield’s While She Sleeps, US punk brigade Tomohawk or the mighty System Of A Down, although the festival itself certainly caters for all music tastes, with a strong emphasis on the more brutal end of rock in this year’s line-up, Leeds 2013 was the unadulterated rock mecca. Part of this staple backbone towards this year’s event, Fall Out Boy not only brought with them the crowds, but also some serious belters long lost in our past musical exploration… Opening up with ‘Thriller’ from the groups most successful album ‘Infinity On High,’ Fall Out Boy reminded us all how downright catchy and entertaining they are, with 2013 standing proud as their year of the comeback. Returning back in February 2013 with their top fifteen single ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark,’ proceeded by their number 1 album ‘Save Rock n Roll,’ the band not only have stepped up a gear in terms of musical craftsmanship, but have also evidently worked hard to get their live stage show exactly where it needs to be. Long gone are the days where lead vocalist Patrick Stump performs his geek chic-esque character, making room for a charismatic, energetic live showcasing. Guitarist and back bone of the band Pete Wentz plays more of a dominating role in the group now (he actually heard him in speak to the audience for once!) indicating not only have Fall Out Boy sat down and worked out how to effectively play to their strengths, but also done this with great ease and effectiveness. Other track ‘Dance Dance,’ ‘ Thnks Fr Th Mmrs,’ and ‘This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race’ all worked their magic to not only win over thee 30,000 strong audience membership but also rendered the fact that Fall Out Boy are back…and this time, they mean business…

LEEDS FESTIVAL GREEN DAY
REVIEW Words by KT Evans
Since their formation back in 1987, it would be a pretty fair comment to say that Green Day have dominated the international pop punk market of which they have so proudly stood. Whether it be through world wide record sales, the rawring success of their countless studio albums or main stage headliner glory status, the four piece from California are all about one central aim – to bring the very best live performance possible. Headlining Leeds Festival 2013 on the middle Saturday, was this primary message so effectively put into action? You betcha… Even though you may not be part of the 75 million people who have bought themselves a Green Day album, chances are you could name at least three belters off the bands back catalogue. One of the best selling groups in the world, Green Day have prided themselves on creating anthemic hits, so effective and so emotional both through the car stereo and on a main stage that it is hard never to have come across the quartet before. Opening their two and half hour long set to 99 Revolutions from the bands studio album !Tre!, a killer night was on the cards for the 90,000 strong mud drenched audience, who coming out in abundance from their single skinned popup tents, raised the atmosphere to an almost unspeakable high. If Leeds Festival has highlighted one thing to us about our favourite pop punk US brigade, it is this…Green Day are the exception. Like countless other bands with such a forceful repertoire, its common for groups to pack their most anthemic tracks into a medley or simple squeeze them in at the end of a set as an almost additional after thought…this is one of live music’s many mysteries, however our detective hats were safely left at home as Green Day set to totally reverse this stereotype. Littering their mammoth set with the most epic of crowd pleasing hits, ‘Holiday,’ ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams,’ ‘American Idiot’ and ‘Basket Case’ not only safeguarded the fact that Green Day are all about their live showcasing, but also they are not afraid to make the most out of the hits which made their band so radio commercial with ultimate success. They’re not shying away from what made them who they are today in an attempt to persuade fans to buy their new records, and instead celebrating what they have become through their powerful past. Closing their set with arguably the most infamous track off their repertoire, if you didn’t have a tear in your eye whilst ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)’ was being so emotionally performed…we suggest you watch Dumbo…that should sort you out…

she just wants to shout F*CK for no particular reason before running out of the room to send more insulting tweets to Lady Gaga (or whoever her hated celebrity of the week is). Osbourne by stuart renton has never been a congenial woman, yet, just If you thought there was only crap on telly, like Simon Cowell, she’s managed to create you’d be right. Sure, there are the occasional this bizarre persona, in her case as some kind of gems like the odd decent bit of drama, but nurturing mother figure, which is just baffling, generally, it’s all a load of donkey balls. And and it makes you wonder who else on TV the biggest of all the stinky donkey balls in has a warm and caring person that’s totally in donkey land has to be the X Factor, which is opposition to their real-life image (I’m talking back. Again. about you, Mr Harris). Yep, the show that refuses to lie down and die in X Factor is twice as long this year as it’s on both a corner is back for its tenth year, and there are Saturday and Sunday evenings. What this really major changes, or so we’ve been told: it’s going means is that there’s even more padding to bore to be fun, it’s going to be exciting, it’s going to the pants off you (or, if you’re Miley Cyrus, the be dramatic, it’s going to be... tiny strip of fabric you call underwear but that’s ... actually, it’s going to be the same old s**t it so revealing it allows you to see who she had for has been for the past nine years. This really is a breakfast*). As a result, there’s only one way to show that should have been put out of its misery watch the X Factor (if you absolutely have to long, long ago. watch it at all) and that’s on fast forward. A two And speaking of things that should have been put to sleep years ago, the worst thing about the hour shows sees about fifteen minutes of actual show (after the actual show itself) is the fact that contestants singing, so stick it on Catch Up and race through the competitions, the introduction Sharon Osbourne is back. I’d hoped to never of the judges, the soft focus shots of Osbourne’s have to write about that woman in my column face, the endless adverts, and, of course, the again, but sadly, there she is, and there’s only pandering to the contestants with the most one saving grace in seeing her smarm her way ridiculous sob stories - which saw no end of through every episode, and that’s seeing her slowing down this year. Hurrah. I think. give one of her legendarily fake hugs to Nicole In other news, ITV launched their new show: Sherzinger, who clearly is repulsed by the her, Stepping Out this week. Anyone watched? and it gives me a warm glow inside to think Anyone? Nope. Didn’t think so... did I’m not the only one for whom the thought of close contact with the Osbourne gives the heebie tumbleweed just roll by...? If you’re depressed about quality TV, don’t worry, though, ‘cos jeebies! Splash is back after Christmas. And that’s Osbourne came back with a whole new face something we can all to ‘look forward’ to. to add to her collection, and I’m sure we’ll see a few of them over the course of the show. If More next week! you’re wondering, in her arsenal is the fake happy face (oh you’re soooo funny, darling, * Did I say who, I meant what... probably! my world is brimming with the joy you give me), the fake sad face (no one knows just how terrible my life is (just look at what I had to have sex with)), and then there’s the genuine angry face which she brings out for special occasions (only even then she’s holding back because you know she wants to plunge hot pokers into both eyeballs while ripping out your heart and eating it in front of you!). And to top off all the many looks of Sharon Osbourne, there’s her nice mask, which is where she looks (well she can’t really give many emotions these days for various “medical reasons”) as though she’s the most serene woman on the planet but you know that despite the shallow smile she’s just holding all in all that rage and bitterness and

Death and dying is often a taboo subject, with people afraid to discuss it. “I Did It My Way” encourages our clients, not to mourn a death, but celebrate a wonderful and varied life. After all, people have lived their lives very differently. A funeral is a very personal , special occasion. Nothing is too much trouble, and we don’t believe our clients should have to pay for ‘hidden extras’ or extortionate costs. We openly advertise our costs, and believe that our clients should pay whatever they would like to. We provide basic funerals from £1950, and wicker caskets and environmentally friendly cardboard caskets which can be beautifully decorated and personlised. We are always happy to discuss your requirements with you.

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
Well, as promised, I’ve just returned from a fishing trip upon the high seas! In truth, it was a dismal day, full of drizzle, diesel fumes and dogfish, but at least it was something a little bit different and gave me the opportunity to spend the day fishing and share it with my wife and son....who were less than impressed but stuck out an eight hour trip! We boarded the vessel full of expectation having been told that bass were in, mackerel were plentiful and rays and hounds were possible. We left the boat shattered, with a small amount of mackerel, an odd turbot, a solitary red gurnard, a smoothhound and some dogfish to our credit so not the most auspicious of encounters! I did however take the opportunity to visit my Marukyu Headquarters earlier in the week to see where all the innovative products my sponsor supplies actually come from. To be completely honest, I also snaffled some of the Marukyu Isome range of baits which are designed primarily for sea species and are best described as a ‘natural artificial’ as they are made from human graded ingredients, packed with attractors and essential amino acids, and come in a handy zip seal pack which can be sealed ready for next time. Many of the Isome range have the characteristics of accepted sea baits such as ragworm, but are more hardy and withstand the rigours of repeated attention and long distance casting, so have all the advantages of the real thing and extra points for durability! Armed with the new baits, a trip was booked on a reputable boat and we headed off to the first mark in search of mackerel. I doubt there is a better method than feathering and I didn’t want to cloud Isome results, so a few feathers and hokkai were lowered over the side to tempt some fresh mackerel for later in the day. A few minutes later, the bows were pointed at the horizon as we moved further out in search of other species, and a short time later we lay at anchor over a likely sandbar. A small size 2 hook was quickly baited with XL Isome and dropped to the seabed; a rattle of the rod tip indicated some interest and my first turbot was quickly on deck! Not a big fish, but very welcome and an indicator that Marukyu Isome worked well, especially as no-one had yet caught! Fishing was very difficult and a lack of action all round the boat led to some fairly unhappy anglers, but those who stuck with it rather than leave the rod in the rest were rewarded with a few other fish during patchy sport. I also managed to bag my first smoothhound, a couple of dogfish and some extra mackerel, most falling to Isome or other baits tipped with Isome to add extra colour or scent, but after eight hours, we had all had enough and returned to harbour. I was pleased to use Isome for the first time and catch comparatively well, and it is certainly something I’ll consider next time. For more details and some great catch reports, why not visit the Marukyu Isome Facebook page to find out more?

This Saturday the Channel 4 coverage comes from Ascot, Haydock and Kempton with Haydock having four races and the other two venues having two apiece. The top race is the Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup over 6 furlongs at Haydock. On Sunday at Leopardstown they run the Irish Champion Stakes and the Matron Stakes, both of which are Group 1 races. Saturday: Ascot: 1.55 Fly London Southend Handicap, Class 2, 3yo+, 7f: Magic City won for the column a couple of weeks ago but this time I fancy Sirius Prospect who put up a good time when winning in the Listed City of York Stakes soft conditions where he beat Rex Imperator by a neck. Apostle, Secret Art, One Word More, Pacific Heights, Mehdi, and Famous Poet also ran fast times on their last outings. 3.30Ladbrokes Mobile Handicap (Heritage Handicap), Class 2, 3yo, 1m 4f: Dark Crusader’s win in the Melrose at York came in a really fast time for the conditions and I reckon that the race could throw up a fair few winners. Elidor finished tenth in that race but was not too far away from the winner and merits the selection here for me. The eleventh that day, Ambleside, has since finished a close second in a 0-85 handicap at Catterick where arguably he should have won. Ambleside gets the first reserve slot followed by: Zain Eagle; Royal Skies; Eshtiaal; Special Meaning; and Prairie Ranger. Haydock: 2.05 Betfred Mobile Be Friendly Handicap, 3yo+, 0-100, 5f: Jedward gets my vote here after equalling his lifetime best speed figure when finishing third at Epsom recently. There are several close up behind on my figures, notably: Judge’n’Jury; Normal Equilibrium; Harrison George; Ahtoug; Racy; and Above Standard. 2.40Betfred.com Superior Mile, Group 3, 3yo+, 1m: Dual course and distance winner Hay Dude has my best last time out rating and gets the call to go in again over what may be his favourite track and trip. Gabrial has my second best figure followed by Red Avenger, Archbishop, Wentworth, and Nine Realms, in that order. 3.15 Betfred “Goals Galore” Old Borough Cup (Handicap), 3yo+, 0-105, 1m 6f: Oriental Fox’s fifth in the Ebor could be good enough form to lift this prize as that was another race run at a good pace and in a fast time for the conditions. The reserve order is: Kiama Bay; Pallasator; Scatter Dice; Itlaaq; and Suegioo. 3.50 Betfred Sprint Cup, Group 1, 3yo+, 6f: Dual Group 1 winner Lethal Force has the best form credentials in my estimation after his 1 ¾ length second to Moonlight Cloud in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on August 4th. Moonlight Cloud has since beaten a quite stellar field in the Jacques Le Marois at the same venue and is a top class animal. Kingsgate Native gets the first reserve slot in a close match with Tiddliwinks, Rex Imperator, Swiss Spirit and Slade Power.

GOLF
Kempton: 2.20 Totepool September Stakes, Group 3, 3yo+, 1m 4f: As not all the contestants have run on the all-weather surface this could be something of a lottery. Main Sequence is one from one on this surface and could figure prominently but one that appeals marginally more is Prince Alzain who has good figures from his last outings on both turf and the artificial surface. After Main Sequence the remaining reserves are: Prince Bishop, Royal Skies, Robin Hood’s Bay, Rewarded and Royal Empire. 2.55 Totescop6 London Mile (Series Final), Class 2, 3yo+, 1m: This is another conundrum with several performing well recently on both turf and all-weather surfaces. There is however a few that have not yet run on the all-weather surface (for instance Lunar Deity and Heavy Metal who have both performed well on turf recently) which poses a problem in trying to pick a winner. I have eventually opted for those that have run well on both surfaces which narrowed the field down to a couple of prime candidates in Emilio Largo and Ehtedaam. In a coin toss of a decision I am siding with Emilio Largo. There are however plenty of possible alternatives after Ehtedaam, for instance: Lunar Deity; Storm King; Seek Again; Shavansky; Tiger’s Tale; Shahdaroba; and Maverik. Sunday: Leopardstown: 5.45 Matron Stakes, Group 1, 1m: Dermot Weld’s Yellow Rosebud gets my vote after a gutsy (and eventually easy) win in a Listed race on heavy ground at Galway last time out. WELLINS SIGNS IN FOR MORE
Richie has signed a deal which will keep him at the club until January 2014. Richie returned to the club at the beginning of August signing a short-term deal and has earned rave reviews for his performances since. He has been an integral part of the Rovers midfield showing calmness on the ball using his experience to bring others in to play. Manager Paul Dickov was keen to extend Richie’s deal and was delighted to be able to announce that an agreement had been reached: “I’m delighted that Richie has agreed to stay here until January,” he said “It puts to bed all the speculation regarding Richie; I’ve always said that he would stay. To be fair to him he’s not let the speculation bother him he’s just got on with it and showed everybody what a top professional he is. “Richie’s experience, how he plays the game and how he handles himself, is top class and the players and fans look up to him. “I’ve got to thank the board for making it possible for us to keep Richie at the club.”

INTERNATIONAL STARS JET OUT Rovers’ two South African internationals Bongani Khumalo and Dean Furman have travelled to face Botswana in Friday’s World Cup qualifier in Durban at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Khumalo featured in Rovers defeat against Bournemouth whilst Furman was an unused sub with the pair travelling back to their home country on Sunday. Former Bafana Bafana captain Khumalo has not featured in the squad since the African Nations Cup in January but coach Gordon Inesund has been impressed with his performances since joining Rovers, so has recalled him for this huge game in the quest to reach Brazil 2014. South Africa will be looking to bounce back after their last World Cup qualifier ended in a 2-1 defeat in Ethiopia and with two matches remaining, Sewnet Bishaw’s Ethiopian side are leading the group by two points knowing a victory would give them an unassailable five point lead, while a draw or a South African win would ensure that the final placing’s in the group will only be decided on the last matchday. Both teams go into their match buoyed by victories achieved last weekend. Getaneh Kedebe and Salahdin Ahmed scored for Ethiopia as they won 2-1 in Botswana, while South Africa trounced Central African Republic 3-0 in neutral Cameroon. Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund, who took over the side after they had drawn their two opening matches and has since taken them to back-to-back wins against Central African Republic, said that he was happy the team controlled their own fate again. “We can do it ourselves, we do not need to hope for results from another match. It is also in our favour that it is direct goal difference rather than head-tohead results.” Bongani Khumalo “It’s a great honour to play for your country especially in front of you home fans. I played and scored in the last World Cup finals, so I really want to play again at that level. This is a important game for us, which we have to win“
THEO JOINS REGGAE BOYS Rovers’ striker Theo Robinson has joined up with the Reggae Boyz, Jamaica, for their CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers this week. He flew out this weekend ahead of the two games away at Panama and home to Costa Rica. Theo had an explosive start to his Rovers career after joining from Derby by scoring two goals in two Jamaica have not had the best of campaigns and remain bottom of a group that includes Mexico and the USA. Their first opponent is Panama, who also are their nearest rivals in the table sitting four points ahead. The Reggae Boyz second game is against 2nd placed Costa Rica, who currently sit in one of the three automatic qualifying spots. Theo will be trying to impress new the Jamaica coach who took over four weeks ago. Winfried Schaefer has spent time as a coach on almost every continent, with the national teams of Cameroon, Thailand and now Jamaica, and with a host of clubs including Stuttgart and Al-Ahli. In four-and-a-half decades in the game, the widelyrespected German has enjoyed plenty of success, too. In almost 30 years in the dugout, Schaefer has seen pretty much all there is to see. However, the 63-year-old now faces one of the greatest challenges of his colourful career, as he seeks to lead the Reggae Boyz to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ despite a near-hopeless situation in CONCACAF qualifying.players. We don’t have much time, so it’s more important to rebuild their belief and convince them it’s actually possible than to start showing them how to take a corner. But we’ll also need a lot of luck.”

MILLERS DOWN MAGPIES
Kieran Agard was the Rotherham United hero as his first-half strike paved the way for Rotherham United to maintain their fine start to the League One campaign with a narrow victory over Notts County. Following a steady opening, Agard’s second goal of the season put the Millers’ in control and despite the visitors’ failing to add to their tally despite being on top for the majority of the encounter, Steve Evans’ men recorded their second victory of the campaign. Despite their Capital Cup defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in midweek, Evans kept faith with his starting line-up for the short trip to Meadow Lane. Striker Daniel Nardiello made a welcome return to the squad following a one-match suspension while Pablo Mills was also given a berth on the bench after putting pen-to-paper on a deal with the Millers’ for the second time yesterday. The home side had the first sight of goal when Mark Fotheringham floated a free-kick which was met by the head of Gary Liddle but Scott Shearer was onhand to snuff out the danger. At the other end, Polish ‘keeper Bartosz Bialkowski flapped at an up-and-under by Ben Pringle before Michael O’Connor blazed an effort well over the bar from distance. After Lee Frecklington misplaced a pass on halfway, David Bell advanced with menace to strike a fierce effort which stung the palms of Shearer and after the visitors’ failed to clear the danger, ex-Miller’ Jamal Campbell-Ryce delivered a tantalising cross which narrowly evaded the home frontline. With neither side gaining the upper hand, Agard’s persistence paved the way for Frecklington to fire a rasping effort over the bar before Frecklington and Agard both squandered shooting positions in the visitors’ next attack as O’Connor blasted an effort high into the home stand. Pringle then floated a free-kick from distance which failed to trouble Bialkowski before the Millers’ took a grip on the proceedings eight minutes before the interval. Following a County attack, O’Connor fired a long diagonal which saw Agard challenge with last man Mustapha Dumbaya, who appeared to handle the ball as the striker looked to break clear. The Millers’ made the home side pay with the breakthrough from the resultant free kick when O’Connor’s inswinger was blocked by a ruck of bodies in the box and Agard pounced on the loose ball to slide the ball home from point-blank range. The visitors’ were buoyed by the opener and Revell almost embarrassed Bialkowski when he charged down his attempted clearance before Frecklington reacted quickest from a Mark Bradley cross but his header whistled past the upright. Bialkowski then failed to deal with a hanging cross and Pringle missed a guilt-edged chance to slide the ball into the unguarded net before Agard rose unchallenged from a pinpoint O’Connor free-kick moments later but he headed straight into the grateful hands of the home ‘keeper. With half-time approaching, Bradley punted a controlled clearance upfield which fell invitingly into the run of Alex Revell, whose speculative effort was smothered by Bialkowski as the home side were relieved to hear the half-time whistle. Following the restart, the Millers’ continued to press and following clever interplay between Pringle and Rob Milsom, the latter floated a cross which saw Agard glance a header into the hands of Bialkowski. Frecklington then attempted an opportunistic volley from distance but it flew harmlessly wide of the target before Dumbuya was fortunate to escape further action when he clipped Agard as Rotherham looked to counter quickly. Minutes later, a superb fine flowing move involving Pringle and Revell put Agard in the clear but the ex-Yeovil striker was unfortunate as his snap shot brushed off Bialkowski as it cleared the crossbar. In a rare foray by the home side, Enda Stevens caught the visitors’ napping with a quickly-taken free

kick but despite having a sight of goal, sub Adam Coombes dragged his shot harmlessly wide of the target. Fellow substitute Andre Boucaud then saw yellow for a lunge on O’Connor before Revell looped a header over as he climbed highest from a Frecklington centre. The Millers continued to look the most likely and O’Connor’s piledriver fizzed past the upright before the visitors’ came within a whisker of doubling their advantage when Frecklington broke clear but with home defenders’ hot on his heels, his steered drive towards the bottom corner was parried to safety by Bialkowski. With time running out, County had faint appeals for a spot-kick when Coombes tumbled under the attempted challenge of sub Mills but referee Carl Boyeson refused to award the penalty before Ronan Murray’s headed over as the Millers’ held firm to bag the three points. OWLS PEGGED BACK MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
Wednesday posted a useful point at The Riverside Stadium, sharing the spoils with Middlesbrough. Michail Antonio struck in the first half but the Owls were pegged back just after the interval by Mustapha Carayol. And although the Teessiders went on to edge the possession and opportunities, Dave Jones’ side held on to pick up their third successive Championship draw. Seeking their first home win of the season, Boro applied the early pressure, with George Friend and Lukas Jutkiewicz chancing their luck to no avail in the early throes. The dangerous looking Friend went close, though, on 12 minutes, cutting in from the left to unleash a fierce drive that flew narrowly over the crossbar. Wednesday grew into the game and pushed the hosts back towards their own goal. Reda Johnson rampaged down the flank and sent an inviting cross that just evaded the onrushing Antonio before Justin Hoyte denied the same player with a brave last-ditch block. Jutkiewicz threatened again at the other end but saw an angled shot deflected wide and Chris Kirkland diverted Grant
Leadbitter’s effort from the resulting corner. Then on 35 minutes, Wednesday stole into the lead. Jeremy Helan’s corner was headed goalwards by Kamil Zayatte and Antonio was on hand to hook home into the roof of the net from close range. But the Owls suffered a blow moments after the resumption. Skipper Anthony Gardner fell awkwardly from an aerial challenge and left the field on a stretcher – Miguel Llera came on for his first league action of the new campaign. Wednesday were undeterred by the setback, as was evidenced by a thunderous Antonio strike that just evaded Jason Steele’s left post. Leadbitter warmed the hands of Kirkland on the stroke of half time before Liam Palmer went close for the Owls, who were good value for their advantage at the break. But alas for Wednesday, that lead lasted only three minutes into the second half. Jutkiewicz found space down the left and placed an accurate feed right into the mix to leave Carayol with the simple task of converting from three yards. That gave Boro the initiative and they went within a whisker of making it count on the hour when Jutkiewicz smashed against the crossbar. Kirkland then had to perform a swift recovery to save after a Leadbitter free kick took a wicked deflection off the defensive wall as Middlesbrough sought to get their noses in front. Substitute Andy Halliday almost marked his entrance with a goal but was thwarted by a superb Kirkland save and Dean Whitehead’s piledriver from distance also went close. Albert Adomah and Halliday had chances to seal victory near the end but a combination of excellent goalkeeping and sound defending ensured a point for Wednesday.
HARD SPENCE OWLS FIXTURES 2013/14 EARNED SIGNS IN POINT SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones hailed “a hard-fought point” as the Owls emerged with a 1-1 draw from Middlesbrough on Saturday. Michail Antonio was on target for Wednesday before Mustapha Carayol levelled matters at The Riverside Stadium. And Jones said his side fully deserved a share of the spoils from an entertaining clash on Teesside: “It was a hard-fought point and one that we were really good value for. To have come away with nothing from a game like that would have been harsh. “You could say it was a game of two halves. I thought we were absolutely magnificent in the first half and after the break the onus was on the home side to attack and they did that. “But we defended really well, we were solid and dogged. We had our chances too and might have won it at the end. “But a point was a fair result and that’s three games unbeaten and something we need to build on.” Jones issued an update on the injury sustained by Anthony Gardner moments after the Owls took the lead. He revealed: “It looks like he has torn his Achilles but we won’t know for sure until he has had a scan. “He says he felt something kick and that is a similar sensation to a tear. “But we will hope for the best and assess things properly when he has the scan.”
Sheffield Wednesday have signed Jordan Spence on an emergency loan from Premiership side West Ham United. The versatile defender is eligible to play in the Owls’ Championship game with Middlesbrough at The Riverside Stadium on Saturday. Spence joined the Hammers in 2004 as a youngster and has since risen through the ranks at Upton Park to post seven senior appearances to date. He has also enjoyed loan spells with Bristol City, Scunthorpe United and Leyton Orient, making a total of 57 appearances along the way. On the international stage, the Londoner has captained England at every youth level, from the Under16s through to the Under-21s. The 23-year-old began his career as a centre half but has more recently plied his trade in the right back berth. Spence will wear shirt number 26 during his S6 stay.

BLADES RUE MISSED CHANCES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
David Weir suffered a first home defeat as Blades boss in Saturday’s encounter with MK Dons. Antony Kay’s late header secured the points for the MK Dons although Jose Baxter made an encouraging start in a Blades shirt. Febian Brandy wasted United’s best chance - moments before Kay’s winner - and the Blades winger was also sent off following a late tackle. Boss Weir handed Baxter an immediate start after signing in midweek. The striker, brought in from Oldham in midweek, was one of three changes with Hill and Flynn also making their first league starts of the season. McGinty, McFadzean and Brandy all dropped to the bench. Kicking towards the Kop in the first half, the Blades, with Baxter in the advanced midfield role, began well and Taylor almost connected with an early Murphy cross. The first chance for the visitors arrived on 15 minutes but McLeod fluffed his shot after getting the better of Maguire, whilst a couple of niggles close to the dugout kept the officials - including the fourth official - busy. Taylor shot across goal after Murphy nodded down a Doyle header and soon after Baxter volleyed wide after an encouraging link-up between Flynn and Taylor. The visitors also had opportunities in an even half, a Carruthers effort from the edge of the box was blocked by Maguire and McLeod fired over. Two minutes of injury-time at the end of the first half brought a chance each before the interval. Baxter over-hit a forward ball as Taylor managed to wriggle clear and at the other end McMahon was well-placed to prevent McLeod getting in a shot from just six yards. The Blades were first to register a
chance in the second half when Baxter’s shot deflected off Kay’s leg to Taylor but his effort on the stretch was wide. Baxter also had another shot blocked within moments. Teenage striker Ironside replaced Taylor before the hour and the replacement was involved in the move that resulted in Flynn getting booked, presumably for diving, when he went down in the box under Lewington’s challenge. The Blades fans were excited about the introduction of Brandy, who quickly won a free-kick which saw Martin have to palm away from McMahon. As the half progressed United continued to see plenty of the ball but were finding the Dons defence in resilient mood. Ironside had another effort blocked as the final 15 minutes approached, whilst a weak effort from Dons’ Bamford trickled wide. With eight minutes remaining Brandy got the better of his marker on the left and pulled the ball back for Ironside, but the fellow substitute steered wide under pressure but worse was to follow. With five minutes to go Baxter got the better of Lewington and squared the ball for Brandy, who had the majority of the goal to aim at but he scuffed the ball wide. And then, with three minutes remaining, there was further misery. From an inswinging Williams free-kick, KAY was positioned at the back post and headed home from close range as a wall of silence surrounded Bramall Lane. Five minutes of added time gave Blades fans hope and McFadzean replaced Flynn but the Dons continued with their miserly defending and held on to secure the points, more comfortably after Brandy was sent off late on for a lunge on Hodson. Blades: Long, Maguire, Hill, Flynn (McFadzean 90), Doyle, Taylor (Ironside 57), Baxter, Collins, Coady, Murphy (Brandy 64), McMahon. Unused: Howard, Westlake, McGinn, McGinty.
WEIR LEFT FRUSTRATED MANAGERS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk
David Weir admitted United were left to rue missed opportunities, following Saturday’s 1-0 home reversal at the hands of the MK Dons. Speaking after Antony Kay’s 87th minute goal consigned the Blades to a first home league loss of the new season, Weir was under no illusions to where the game slipped away from his players. He said: “It is a really harsh defeat to take, as I think we did enough to win the game. “We have had three really good chances to take all three points, but if you don’t score when you are on top you are always likely to get that kick in the teeth and it is a sore one to accept. “It is very disappointing because although there were many positive to take from the performance, we are ultimately judged on results on that is a third league defeat in five matches.” When asked about the fans reaction at the end of the game, Weir remarked: “Both teams cancelled each other out I suppose and the way we played mirrored each other, but we did create enough chances. “I thought we did a lot of good things but when you lose game everyone is going to be upset and frustrated and that showed at the end.” The Gaffer concluded by saying he had no complaints about the late red card shown to Febian Brandy, adding: “Febian reacted in the wrong way to missing his chance to win the game, but we have told him you can’t make tackles like that. “It is a bad day for Febian and this must act as a learning experience for him and also as a team we have to come back stronger from this defeat.

BLADES SECURE NEW INTERNATIONAL PARTNER SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Sheffield United Football Club announces today that HRH Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has become joint owner of the League One club. Prince Abdullah has secured a 50% interest in Blades Leisure Ltd, the holding company for Sheffield United FC, in return for which he will invest substantial new capital into the club with the aim of working with current owner Kevin McCabe and his family to achieve the Blades’ return to the Premier League as quickly as possible. The Prince becomes Co-Chairman with Kevin McCabe of Blades Leisure and Sheffield United. Prince Abdullah, aged 47, is a grandson of the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz. He is a passionate football supporter and is former President of Al Hilal FC, the largest and most successful club in Saudi Arabia. He is also Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s Football Privatisation Committee. Prince Abdullah is a prominent Saudi businessman and industrialist. He is the founder and Chairman of the publiclylisted Saudi Paper Manufacturing Group, the largest paper tissue manufacturer in the Middle East. He is active in other fields in the services and investments sectors in Saudi Arabia, and internationally. He travels extensively and works with other prominent businessmen from around the world to promote trade, goodwill and understanding through sport between Saudi Arabia and other countries. Prince Abdullah said: “I am delighted to invest in such a sensibly-organised, family and community club with a great history and heritage. Joining Sheffield United FC at a time close to its 125th year in existence is significant to me and, like Kevin, I am determined to see it achieve its goals and look forward to working with the whole Blades community. However, money will be spent judiciously, and in any case we must comply with the Salary Cost Management Protocol.” Kevin McCabe said: “We are thrilled to be building this new partnership for Sheffield United with Prince Abdullah, who shares our vision for the Blades to join the top tier of English football. The McCabe family remains wholly committed and over the past 10 years has invested more than £90 million in rebuilding our fine and proud Club, which now has a top-class stadium, academy and junior development centre.” The boards will also see new directors in Abdulraham Bin Abdullah (the Prince’s son), James Phipps (the Prince’s principal advisor) and Selahattin Baki (a highly regarded Turkish businessman and General Manager of Premier Paper Converting Company, which manufactures consumer tissue paper products in Izmit, Turkey). London and Dubai-based specialist consulting firm Forticap acted as the sole arranger for the transaction.
