STRICTLY RETURNS Weekly Wit With... TO TV AND TO THE ALBERT SNODGRASS ARENA As BBC One’s smash hit entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing returns to our TV screens, tickets for the 2014 Strictly Come Dancing Live UK Tour are now on general sale. The multi-million pound show production will stop off at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th January 2014. The 2014 live tour will feature a brand new lineup of your favourite celebrities and dancers from the hugely popular BBC One show. Strictly fans get to watch the celebrity dancing couples competing for the best scores from TV judges Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood & Bruno Tonioli and will then get to vote themselves with their mobile phones. Head Judge Len Goodman said: “It’s a great thrill to take the cream of what promises to be another electric TV series out on the road for the seventh Strictly UK Tour. Strictly will again pull out all the stops with an outstanding line up of celebs and I’m really looking forward to finding out who will be joining Craig, Bruno and myself on tour.” Craig Revel Horwood added: “Taking Strictly around the country and performing live to thousands of people every night is always such a pleasure. I’m extremely excited to be directing the show again, and already planning a fab-u-lous extravaganza. This tour will be the most amazing yet!” Bruno Tonoli agreed: “Another series of Strictly, another superb line up of beautiful celebs and an incredible seventh live tour… Who could ask for more?! Fantastico!” Arena audiences will experience the glitz, glamour and breathtaking choreography which make Strictly Come Dancing a national entertainment treasure. Details of the celebrities and dancers appearing on the tour will be announced soon. The tour has received rave reviews in the national newspapers since it began – the Mail on Sunday awarded the 2013 tour a 4 Star review and the Daily Telegraph said: “The glitzy occasion still sparkles... It was Fab-u-lous”. The Sunday Express have previously said of the tour: “7000 of us raised the roof. Does it get much better? Not often.” Last December a peak audience of more than 13 million viewers tuned in to watch the Strictly final on BBC One, when gymnast Louis Smith was crowned the winner. The television format, also known as Dancing With The Stars, entered the Guinness Book of World Records three years ago as the world’s most successful reality television show and 48 different versions of the show have been licenced across the world by BBC Worldwide. In an attempt to kill two birds with one stone David Cameron announces that the RAF will commence dropping Badgers on Syria from tomorrow. “Lucozade and Ribena sold to Japanese firm for £1.3bn” What a rip off they’re only about £1 a bottle down my local shop. The mother in law had just died so to cheer my wife up I decided to get her a bunch of flowers. “You tight sod Albert!”, she yelled throwing them back at me, “you’ve just got these from a lamppost haven’t you!” “No I haven’t!” I yelled back defending myself, “how can you make that assumption about your own husband!” “Because this is the exact bunch I laid at the scene of her accident!”. “Do you want to hear a really good Batman impression?” asked my mate Dave. “Go on then,” I replied. “NOT THE KRYPTONITE!” he screamed. I said, “That’s Superman.” He said, “Thanks, I’ve been practising.” I couldn’t believe it today, when I came home and was told by my wife that my 5-year-old son wasn’t actually mine. She says that I need to pay more attention when picking him up from school. The Japanese flag is actually a pie chart of how much of Japan is Japan. I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. They’ll never fully appreciate the comfort and coolness of their bathroom floor. If history has taught us one thing...... Then we haven’t learnt much have we. I was in the supermarket earlier and they had started selling Halloween costumes already. My wife was taking ages picking anything so I turned to her and said. “Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right here I am stuck in the Lidl with you.” Saw a sign in the bus station today, it said ‘One bus takes 35 cars off the road’ personally I think it depends how aggressive the driver is... I saw Worzel Gummidge crying the other day. I asked him what was wrong. “I hate my name,” he whimpered. “I wish I could shorten it to something cooler.” “Don’t worry,” I said. “It could be Worz.”

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Palmistry - The Mounts of the Hand The mounts of the hands are the fleshy pads that lie at the base of the fingers and thumb. Each mount (like each finger) is named after a planet, and each mount relates to a different personality trait. The mount of the little finger is called the Mercury mount, the mount of the ring finger is called the Apollo mount, the mount of the middle finger is called the Saturn mount and the mount of the index finger is called the Jupiter mount. These mounts tell us how much vitality a person has and how much they enjoy life. As a general rule the higher the mounts are on a person’s hand, the more enthusiastic and vibrant that person is.

Someone with a very small mount of Saturn has little sense of responsibility. It may be hard for them to hold down a job because they do not care about things. A mount of Saturn that is of normal size denotes someone who has a good attitude to life. They are responsible and capable and they have plenty of common sense. They are not afraid of hard work. A mount of Saturn that is very pronounced suggests a person who is cynical and pessimistic.

The Mount of Apollo Apollo was the sun God of the Romans. He has close links with the sun in astrology. The sun rules our creativeness and our identity throughout our lives. NEWS & INFORMATION

With the help of volunteers from the EE shop in Sheffield, Sheffield 50+ members with ages ranging from 56 to 96 gained experience and knowledge for using their own ‘new’ technology. The Fargate store hosted a Tea Party to de-mystify using phones, digital cameras and computers, including the new tablets and kindles. It was thoroughly enjoyable, tea cake and technology went together very well. Members left with a lot more confidence and we can’t wait for another opportunity.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MEMORY WALK 2013

A REQUEST FOR HELP FROM SHEFFIELD CITY COUNCIL

We would like to invite you to a series of events that will look at the challenges facing Adult Social Care Services. We want to hear your views on how you think Sheffield City Council should plan social care services in the future. What will happen with the feedback from the events? Sheffield City Council has already brought together information about Adult Social Care from existing customers over the last couple of years. Your views are important to us. The feedback you provide through these events, together with what we already know, will help us make changes to Adult Social Care Services and design services for the future. We will compile a Summary Report reflecting your views. This will be presented to decision makers to inform the 2014/15 budget setting process and service design. What are the events about? You are welcome to attend one or all of the events. In order to make sure that we have representation from a broad range of people, we are inviting customers, providers, third sector organisations and other stakeholders. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and we will try to keep a balance between the various stakeholder groups. At each event there will be a short presentation followed by an opportunity in small groups for you to share your comments and discuss your ideas with others. If you would like to attend please let us know using the contact details below. Please tell us about any adjustments or support you may require in order to attend.

CARE HOMES FOR THE ʻROCK AND ROLLʼ GENERATION A former care minister, Paul Burstow MP, is calling for care homes in the UK to be revamped and is heading up a commission to design a new care home model suitable for the ‘rock and roll’ generation. The Commission on Residential Care has been formed with the aim of developing a vision of residential care that is fit for the 21st century. In recent years, the care home sector has been plagued by abuse scandals, such as Winterbourne View. But behind the headlines, care homes are being challenged by reduced public spending, the wholesale transformation of the health and care systems, an agenda that promotes choice and personalised care for everyone, and a rapidly ageing population, which is placing additional pressure on a care system already under strain. At the same time, peoples’ expectations of residential care are changing, as current generations become accustomed to a higher level of independence and choice than the post-war generation, and more emphasis is placed on supporting people with disabilities to live independently in the community. It is hoped that following the year-long Commission on Residential Care, hosted by the think tank Demos, care homes will be places where people are able to carry on with their independence intact. In a speech to launch the Commission, Mr Burstow said we need to turn care homes “from a place where the curtains are drawn and no one really knows what is going on in them to places of laughter and light”. He added: “For many the thought of residential care is a source of dread, an unwelcome last resort. Media reporting of care has fuelled the negative stereotype. Yet care homes can be places of light and laughter, a home from home. “The goal must be to give people a real housing choice in later life, rather than a fire sale as things start to fall apart. Adaptations and staying put, yes, but moving as a genuine choice too. “There needs to be a reappraisal of the role of residential care, a realisation that it is part of the solution, rehabilitation of its reputation and a valued place in our care system.” Sheffield 50+ is happy to pass on your views of how you would like to see care homes develop for the future generations. Please Email Julie at julie@sheffield50plus.org.uk and Sheffield 50+ we will pass on your views to the Commission.

DORE SHOW TO BE OPENED OFFICIALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SUPPORT OF ST.LUKE’S HOSPICE For the first time, the long-established Dore Show will be opened officially this year by Radio Sheffield’s popular presenter, Paulette Edwards on Saturday September 14th at 2.00pm in the heart of the village. Happily the show is returning to its traditional homes – Dore Old School and Dore Methodist Church – and the charity being supported in 2013 is St Luke’s Hospice, of which Paulette is a strong champion. There are 82 exhibit categories including vegetables, flowers and baking to photography, wine, art and textile, also with several junior sections. Visitors will be entertained by Oughtibridge Brass Band and Chesterfield Garland Dancers and cream teas will also be on the menu! The show will be open until 4.30pm, during which there will be a raffle. It will be followed by a charity auction in the Dore Old School playground, with all proceeds going to St. Luke’s Hospice. Many local people have been involved in organising and running this community event, with more details available at dorevillage.co.uk/doreshow. There is still time to entry exhibits, particularly in the art and photography sections. For further press information please contact Margaret Laver at Proactive PR on 0114 236 1286 or margaret@proactivepr.org.uk.

IS THERE AN ‘ANNIE’ OUT THERE? New Youth Theatre Rotherham are looking for children and young adults age 5 to 18 to be in their next production ANNIE. This classic tale of the young orphan girl during the Great Depression of the 1930’s is loved by young and old alike. With classic songs like ‘Tomorrow’, ‘Hard Knock Life’ and ‘Never Fully Dressed’ it is certain to be a real crowd pleaser. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to play Annie, Miss Hannigan, Daddy Warbucks, an orphan or any of the other great characters in the show, this is your chance. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings from 18th September at Myplace, St Ann’s Road, Rotherham S65 1PH, with the show to be performed in December. New Youth Theatre, which has centres across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire, gives children the opportunity to develop their singing, dancing and acting skills whilst rehearsing for up to 3 shows a year. It does not matter whether someone is an experienced performer or a complete beginner as full training is given. All that is required is bags of enthusiasm. As well as improving their performing arts skills a big emphasis is placed on learning about commitment, teamwork and developing self confidence in a fun-filled, action packed environment run by teachers and industry professionals. Please call 01302 537737 for more details about joining the cast or visit our website at www.newyouththeatre.co.uk/rotherham and watch our introductory video. We look forward to hearing from you.

ANOTHER WHIIRLOW AFFAIR

The team at Whirlow Hall Farm Trust are as busy as their bee’s preparing for their largest fundraising event of the year… the Whirlow Hall Farm Fayre, which will be held at the farm on Sunday 15th September 2013 from 10am to 4pm. This annual event is set to be bigger and better than ever with the emphasis this year being to show new and exciting attractions and provide lots of FREE activities proving to be a true value for money event. The entry fee for adults is £6, this money goes directly to the charity to ensure they can continue to deliver their unique learning opportunities for local children; and the best bit is children entry on the day is FREE of charge. The usual giant craft and farmer’s market marquee, this year sponsored by Wren Kitchens will be erected with up to 100 stalls to peruse at leisure. Local brewery Thornbridge will supply the beer inside the acoustic beer tent where you can take a pew and relax to the sound of Sheffield’s finest acoustic artists. Rides and slides,

face painting and pony rides will return and there will be the most delicious food available including the farms popular Hog Roast and BBQ! A new demonstration marquee will run throughout the day where you can sit and watch the award winning butcher at work. Learn where your cuts of meat come from on the animal, and what to look for when you are shopping for your produce in the supermarket. A number of cooking demonstrations will also take place including a special vegetarian demo from Jon Tite and an AGA cooking demo from the tent sponsor Aga Shop Sheffield. Else where on the field there will be an Antiques tent where Michael Dowse will be giving FREE valuations on items visitors bring from home, a full schedule of entertainment is booked from falconry and extreme mountain bike shows to firm favourites Punch and Judy, and you can try your hand at archery, African drumming, a Masai beadwork workshop or even blacksmithing all for FREE!

If its animals you love Oreo and Friends will be bringing along their exciting array of exotic animals including meerkats and Pika, a very rare fennec fox (pictured). The animal zone sponsor Vets 4 Pets will be running a FREE drop in clinic for you to ask advice about your pets at home, and you can meet alpaca’s and some of the farm animals resident at Whirlow Hall Farm. The charity is excited to have a new headline sponsor this year, GRI Group. This sponsorship allows for more free activities to be available than ever before. Graham Royle, Chairman & CEO of GRI Group said “My wife and I have taken our kids and friends to both the farm and fayre for many years. The staff are amazing, very passionate about the animals and always ensure visitors have a fabulous time. We are delighted to sponsor this fantastic event and to support such a worthwhile cause” We are sure you will agree there will be plenty to see and do on the day so be sure to support the charity event and enjoy a fantastic day out for all the family. If you require any further information about this event please contact a member of the

fundraising team on 0114 2352678 or visit the website on www. whirlowhallfarm.org

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This week we held our last collection of the year on the Tanyard Shopping Centre at Wickersley in Rotherham and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who donated to help us raise £72.55. Also thank you to Lucy, Andy and Barry who held the collection tins. It may not seem a very big amount but every little really does help towards the costs of keeping the station broadcasting. The financial climate is difficult and understandably people are having to prioritise their spends and so what’s left for charity can be less than before. That’s why I’d like to ask you to consider giving just a couple of seconds of your time to raise money for Radio Nightingale without actually spending anything. First when you’re searching on the internet, give a try to www. radionightingale.easysearch.org. uk instead of your usual search engine. It’s powered by some of the biggest search engines, Yahoo! and Bing, so the results you get are really good. Every time you make a search from here Radio Nightingale gets half a penny. Have a think about how many searches you do a day or a week and see how that could add up. It really is free to use; the money to Radio Nightingale comes from the sponsored links on the site. Maybe set it as your homepage so you can find it easily. Or if you’re shopping on the internet try www.easyfundraising. org.uk/radionightingale. This is a collection of thousands of retailers who’ve all agreed to give a percentage of their profits to Radio Nightingale because you make a purchase. The cost you pay is exactly the same as you would if you bought direct from the retailers website, in fact once you’ve selected your retailer from the easyfundraising site you’ll be transferred to their normal website to complete your purchasing. There’s no compromise in your security, no limits on the retailers range and no additional costs. In fact, a lot of the retailers make special offers through the easyfundraising website, so you might even save a little. Plus there are thousands of retailers in the site, some of them you’ll never have heard of before but they offer a fantastic range of products which will be real inspiration for gifts for any occasion. Please, if you can, have a look at these websites. They don’t cost you anything but they do raise a little bit more money to help Radio Nightingale make time pass a little quicker for those in hospital.

MEMBERS ROLL BACK RIGHTS TO THE 70’S MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Well, we certainly are rolling back to the 70s this week on Magic. Before I tell you about that, thanks to everybody who came along to join us at Classical Fantasia in Leeds last week. It was good to meet so many people coming along to enjoy the fabulous fireworks and live classical music set against the breath taking backdrop of Kirkstall Abbey. And this Saturday my colleague Glenn is out and about again at the Bluebell Hotel, Burton Agnes near Bridlington for Party in the Park with Russell Watson. Well done if you won tickets from the Breakfast Show. So this week, we’re giving you a chance to see the current incarnation of one of the 70s most well loved bands and one act we’re also asked to play quite a lot on the air. Winning the hearts of many a teenager in the early and middle part of the decade, the Bay City Rollers spawned a new word back in the day. ‘Rollermania’ was the name given to the following of a bunch of good looking young lads from Scotland who sang the songs we sang along to. They took the UK charts by storm and had hits all over America and the world beyond. Fans donned the costumes, waved the scarves, bought the singles and albums, screamed at the concerts and even battered down the doors to get a glimpse of brothers Alan and Derek, Nobby, Woody and co. Nowadays lead singer Les McKeown has put together a new line up recapturing that 70s magic, playing the hits and wearing the familiar tartan. You can see them on tour through the next couple of months. Locally they play Retford Majestic Theatre on September 29th and Rotherham Civic Theatre on October 10th. To win free tickets, just name the 70s classics we’re re-enacting on the Magic Music Box every morning this week at 8.20am.

CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

“What rights have I got as a member when my club is being sold?” This is a question that frequently comes into Club Historians. We’re not really qualified to answer as every club is different in terms of its constitution and management. The first thing I suggest, though, is to consider whether the club is affiliated to the CIU as matters should be more clearly laid down if that is the case. The enquirer can go to their local CIU branch office or go online to find out more about their rights and to make sure they are being upheld. CIU clubs traditionally have been owned and run by the members themselves, not being in private hands though some have been transferred over in recent years. Clubs that were set up on this collective basis, with members paying their annual subs, should theoretically have some shares to hand out if sold. Before that step, however, the members would need to be consulted with an extraordinary meeting called so that they can air their views on how the sale of the club is to proceed. But the exact details would be in the club’s own constitution and these details are not always available either having been lost or destroyed at some point, especially with older clubs. Some club members can expect a few hundred pounds when their club is sold though most of them would rather they had the club with all its facilities continue! A common problem these days is that many are closing because of financial difficulties and debts. The buildings and the land might be worth quite a bit in today’s inflated prices and several evaluations should be sought.. But if the debts and fees payable are more than the value of the club, then members can expect very little- sometimes nothing at all. Fees to solicitors, accountants etc., can soon mount up but these should be made transparent to the members so they can see where the money is going. I would recommend to members whose club is being sold that they seek the advice of the CIU and discuss the issue with other members. Any irregularities can be flagged up before it’s too late. The best thing, of course, is to try to save the club if there is still some hope that it might be turned around into a viable business.

SLEEPING WITH SIRENS

INTERVIEW

Words by KT Evans

What connotations are brought to mind when hearing the all familiar band name Sleeping With Sirens…a recent UK headline tour alongside some of the United States most upcoming hardcore groups? Vans Warped Tour pioneers carrying their mighty main stage credentials? The heart throbbingly charismatic front man and teenage crush Casanova Kellin Quinn? How about innovation…passion and inbuilt determination to reach the highest extremes of hardcore stardom…… Mercury meets Sleeping With Sirens – Exposed. “Do I think Sleeping With Sirens are where I want them to be now? Yes…Do I want us to be bigger? Of course,” Jesse Lawson, guitarist and one fifth of America’s latest musical sensations to sweep the teenage population into near swooning fainting attacks reveals. “This is what we’re in a band for and we really want to keep on growing and growing and constantly bettering ourselves.” This central message is hard not to notice pumping through each and every member of SWS, whether it be live on stage, in the midst of an interview or simply on a telephone line, across continents and oceans to forever push the pressing issue of reaching out to their fans. “It did come naturally because we worked hard for it, we were on the road for months on end and constantly working on new material. It wasn’t handed to us on a plate; we kept pushing and pushing for this.” But the idea that Sleeping With Sirens fate was written in the stars could not be further from reality…Thomas Jefferson once said “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it…” something which is strongly reflected in the attitude of Jesse Lawson. “I’ve been with Sleeping With Sirens for five years now and it’s been insane. You don’t have time to even take a step back and look at what we’ve done, it’s just like wooosh! The first time we went to the UK, we played to like 100 kids in really small venues. The following year, we’re headlining our own shows with support bands who we’ve picked. We have no time to take it all in.” But where does fame, females and fans all come from, because how ever many times we will walk round with our rock star pout and Raybans smeared across our faces, we’re never going to get asked for an autograph?! The answer, simply put…perseverance. Which is where our story begins…San Diego, California, the native homeland of bassist Jesse, staple backbone member of what could very rapidly become one of the finest US exports...Sleeping With Sirens. Growing up surrounded by a musical family, Jesse’s upbringing reflects millions of hungry teens ambitions and eager to set up a group under their very own name. “My parents were both musicians which is how I started playing instruments. I was in lots of local bands and played around town when I was growing up in really small venues most weeks. My Dad was always playing the guitar and he taught me the basics. I can’t read music myself, but I play by ear. If I was trying to play in an orchestra it would be different, but for me it’s not important. I’m able to listen to a tune and play it back by ear, that’s

how I self-taught myself and how I play.” And if cream rises to the top, it would be a more than fair comment to suggest Jesse Lawson, even from an early age, was the cream of the crop. Long before he met arguably the four most important friends and work colleagues of his life (like every story, we can’t rush to the very best bits yet) Jesse’s main prerogative was always to be on stage. “I was in acoustic bands, hardcore bands, everything before I joined Sleeping With Sirens. I also did a solo project by self, it wasn’t anything too big though, I only really did one tour in small local venues. When I grew up I moved to North Carolina and played some country music for a while, then joined Sleeping With Sirens.” But ultimately, there are the risks. The risk that choosing music as a career could turn horribly wrong, resulting in a deflated opportunity at attempting to hit the big time. The risk that this so called ‘big time’ may be slightly harder to target than first expected and may take so much out of an individual that their spirit and drive is dampened and flattened out. There are all these risks yes, but there is also one shiny big prize. Our story continues… “My parents supported my decision in doing music from the word go. Sleeping With Sirens weren’t always doing as well as we are now and they kept saying keep pushing and stick with it. They were always a really positive influence upon me and have loads of belief in me. They really helped me get to where I am now. When I turned 18, they weren’t too stoked on what I was doing and thought maybe I would grow out of it, but because we’re so close and they knew how much I wanted to make it, they told me to keep at it and keep pushing.” Self-discovery is always a difficult issue to come to terms with. Whether it be feeling comfortable in your own skin, having the pride to walk into school wearing whatever you truly want or opening up to a parent about concerns and problems, small or large, in order to control your own happiness. Jesse knows all about feeling the outcast, emphasising the fact that one man really isn’t an island and a problem shared is most definitely a problem halved. “I came home crying a lot of the time. It was in middle school and high school that I started skating to take my mind of things. I suppose I was the goof ball, always making jokes and trying to have fun and I found by being myself I fitted in better. Read next weeks M-Live for the present and future of SWS.

So, Strictly Come Dancing is back and Bruce is still alive and kicking. Well, I think he is... he’s so old these days its hard to tell what’s going on and whether he’s real or some kind of puppet. It’s a shame, really, as he’s the only thing letting the show down. I’ve seen planks that were less wooden and rocks with more mobility than Mr Forsyth. I’ve even seen Daleks with a greater emotional range and it’s really time to give up the ghost and retire gracefully. And speaking of ghosts, I wouldn’t say Bruce is dicing with the Grim Reaper but I hear there are reports of a cloaked skeletal figure watching the show from the wings and pointing at Bruce with a scythe and saying “it could be you”.. although that could just be someone from the National Lottery having a laugh so I wouldn’t take this gospel. I’m not going to go on about Bruce again. I did that last year. And the year before last. And probably the year before that. And it’s getting almost as old as Forsyth himself. The BBC needs to get rid of the dead weight sullying one of their flagship shows, but, being the spineless cowards they are, there’s simply no way the overpaid execs will give the world’s oldest host the boot. There will be controversy the likes of which the UK has never seen if Brucie were replaced by a younger model - just think of the headlines the Daily Mail could come up with... they’d have enough material to last a lifetime. Anyway. It’s time to get serious. There’s a show on SyFy called The Almighty Johnsons, which is without a doubt the best TV show you never saw. It’s just starting its third season over here in the UK (which is a bit rubbish if you like watching your shows from the first episode) but if you’re looking for something magical with strong characters, serious drama and a whole load of comedy, then The Almighty Johnsons (TAJ) is absolutely for you. Now, there are some disclaimers to said enjoyment of show: it’s made in New Zealand, which means a few of the dialects might take a bit of getting to get used to, but once you’ve got past that it’s plain sailing, because TAJ is all about the characters, and they’re all so utterly charming that its impossible to hate this show (unless you’re a Giant, in which case you’ll hate everything about Norse

mythology*). TAJ is all about four brothers who happen to the be reincarnations of the Norse gods. OK, so Norse gods in New Zealand is pretty out there, but the show is bonkers all the way, and if that wasn’t enough on its own, the show focuses on the youngest brother, Axl, who, as the reincarnation of Odin, needs to find his goddess, Frigg, so they can consummate their marriage and regain the full powers of the gods. The show is so cleverly written: it’s witty, it’s brilliant in so many ways, but as with all things, its the incidental characters that are particularly genius. While the core cast are superb, for me it’s Ingrid, the barking mad seer, and, of course, Colin Gunderson, who provides much needed bad guy action as firestarter, Loki. If you watch any show this year it should be The Almighty Johnsons. I rarely say anything on telly is good and it’s rarer than an honest politician on an election campaign when I give a show a proper compliment, but TAJ is genius and one of those rare shows that is so much better than the sum of its parts. It’s a true classic in every sense of the word, but sadly, it’s a show that will be missed by so many due to the lack of promotion and a general inclination of the public to prefer processed tosh like The Vampire Diaries, which is the McDonalds of television drama, and Arrow, which is telly’s KFC. There’s nudity, sex, swearing and - well just about anything and everything that’s possibly offensive in The Almighty Johnsons, so go check it out: it’s on SyFy on Wednesdays at 10:00pm. More non-smut next week. *I’m even doing mythology in my column these days. Google it!

When you’re thinking about getting a new pet it is important to consider the responsibility you’ll be taking on – pet owners have to consider all of the things they have to provide to make their pet happy. PDSA Senior Vet, Elaine Pendlebury said, “People usually take a lot of time to buy a car, researching in advance all of the requirements they’ll need to consider. Having a pet should be researched just as thoroughly – pet ownership is a great experience, but we have to be certain that we can provide everything our new pet will need. Sometimes, very sadly, people will abandon their pets as soon as they don’t want them anymore, resulting in overflowing re-homing centres. Therefore you need to take time to find out what would be the right pet for you. Read books and look at reputable websites to make sure you are certain that you can provide what your pet needs. That way, you’ll choose the best pet for you – the end result will be that both you and your pet will happy, enjoying your future life together. Elaine explains: “Choosing the wrong pet for your lifestyle can have disastrous consequences for both of you; mistakes can be costly, both financially and emotionally. It can result in both you and your pet being unhappy because you’re not suited to each other. It can cause pet

neglect and the pet can ultimately end up being one of the many that end up in shelters waiting for a new owner.” To help prospective pet owners, PDSA’s website www.your-right-pet.org.uk allows people to find the most suitable type of pet, based on their lifestyle. It asks four simple questions, based around four key factors: Place – which type of pet is appropriate for where you live? Exercise – could you provide the right type and amount of exercise? Time – could you devote enough time to your pet? Spend – could you afford the lifetime expenses of your preferred pet? By answering these questions, the website can then make suggestions as to what kind of pet will be best for you. People often hugely under-estimate the overall costs of pet ownership. The lifetime cost of owning a cat is around £17k, whilst a dog can be anything from £16k to £31k depending on their size. Even rabbits cost an unexpected total of £9k throughout their life. Once you have found a suitable pet, the website then goes on to explain the five welfare needs of the animal and how to meet them. Meeting these needs is not only a legal requirement under the Animal Welfare Act; it will also ensure that your pet remains healthy and happy during their life with you. angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

Another busy week during which most of my time has been spent doing fishing related projects, I’ve not actually had time to go fishing! I was recently asked by Angler’s Mail magazine to compile a series of short venue video reviews to be shown on their own Youtube channel at Angler’s Mail TV. Video work is something I have yet to get to grips with and my early efforts have been somewhat lacking, but I am getting more of an idea as each one progresses. This week, I visited L Lakes near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire for a wander around before shooting my video review and wwas very pleasantly surprised! When I finally found it, (it’s on Lind Avenue if you’re interested) I drove into the car park and just sat in the van to absorb the atmosphere for a few minutes, then grabbed the notebook and set off to find some knowledgeable anglers to gather information. I met Mark, the bailiff who had been fishing constantly for FOUR months who was only too happy to give me the lowdown on the seven acre specimen water. Carp to almost 30lbs, pike, big tench, skimmers and roach form the mainstay of angling at L Lakes, but in truth the real accolades should go to the surroundings which were truly stunning and so peaceful. As I walked around the lake, I met three anglers who were on a first time visit; as I watched, one of the gentlemen performed a cast which left his feeder on the ground behind him and his rig cartwheeling unusually through the air. A glimpse at his set up

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

and I realised something was wrong, so I asked if he would mind reeling in to show me his rig. A leadcore leader, lead clip and large feeder with a coated braid hooklink complete with a size 6 hook baited with a boilie; not what I would have chosen, but what concerned me most was that the leadcore was reversed! The hooklink was tied to the spliced loop and the mainline attached to the hook length swivel leaving the leadclip around five feet from the hook and explained why each cast left his feeder on the ground! The tail rubber hadn’t even been slipped over the clip! I use this scenario as an example; not of bad angling, but perhaps of profit before fish safety and education. Despite the plethora of information freely available in magazines and online, retailers and manufacturers have to accept that some anglers do not access these sources and are left to fend for themselves on the bank. The leadcore in question had no instructions attached so the very cordial chap was left to work it out for himself and unfortunately got it wrong resulting in a dangerous rig. As it was, he welcomed a few minutes of my time showing him how to use it correctly and was soon using it in the intended manner, but, for the sake of a pictorial diagram and a word in the tackle shop, the potential for a tethered fish could have been avoided. This weekend’s big race in the UK is the St. Leger from Doncaster. Although the Doncaster meeting is a four day affair the card on Wednesday is of a generally lower quality than the last three days. As a result Channel 4 presents four races from this venue on each day from Thursday to Saturday with three other races from Chester supporting Saturday’s TV action. Doncaster: Thursday: 1.40 EBF Carrie Red Fillies’ Nursery Stakes (Handicap), 2yo, 6f: Mark Johnston’s Atlantic Affair is the selection to go in here. Ticking Katie could be the one for the forecast followed by Inyordreams and Les Gar Gan. 2.10 Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes, Group 3, Fillies and Mares, 3yo+, 7f: In this one Switcher gets the nod over Boastful, Bethany Bay, Annecdote and Winning Express. 2.40 Weatherby’s Hamilton Insurance £300,000 2yo Stakes, Class 2, 6f 110yds: I reckon that if he turns up Finflash might just be able to supplement recent earnings. Coulsty and Ben Hall are feared most but it looks to be a very competitive event. 3.15 DFS Park Hill Stakes, Group 2, Fillies and Mares, 3yo+, 1m 6f 132yds: Wadaa is the choice for me here with The Lark, Saint Hilary and Seal of approval looking the most likely to provide the strongest opposition. Friday: 1.40 Polypipe Flying Childers Stakes, Group 2, 2yo, 5f: Ambiance gets my vote here ahead of Brown Sugar, Excel’s Beauty, Money Team, Sleeper King and Wind Fire. 2.10 Ladbrokes Mallard Stakes (Handicap), 3yo+, 0-110, 1m 6f 132yds: If David Wachman’s Time for Action puts in an appearance he could take some catching round here. Ile de Re could be the one for the forecast followed home by Albert Bridge, Tropical Beat, Pether’s Moon and Tenenbaum. 2.40 Speedy Services Doncaster Cup, Group 2, 3yo+, 2m 2f: Ahzeemah’s victory in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup marks him down as the one to beat here in my estimation. Third and sixth in that race were Times Up and Colour Vision who may again compete for places. Ernest Hemingway, Chiberta King and Tropical Beat come out next best in my figures. 3.15 Barrett Steel May Hill Stakes, Group 2, 2yo Fillies, 1m: David O’Meara’s once-raced Coin Broker is the one that appeals most ahead of Avenue Gabriel and Minorette with Qawaasem and Lady Lara heading up the remainder. Saturday: 2.05 At The Races Champagne Stakes, Group 2, 2yo Colts & Geldings, 7f: I have this as a very tight call between Wilshire Boulevard and Cable Bay based on last time out performances. With Aidan O’Brien still being fourhanded with his entries it is not certain that Wilshire Boulevard will turn out so I am taking a chance with Cable Bay who looks almost sure to run. Next best look to be Exogenesis and Expedition. 2.40 Ladbrokes Portland Handicap, Class 2, 3yo+, 5f 140yds: Jamaican Bolt again appears in the entries for the umpteenth time this year but it is anybody’s guess if he will run – if he does he could be a danger to all at this track. However, I like the look of Kevin Ryan’s Tiddliwinks who has been running well of late and accordingly give him the nod in a mightily competitive cavalry charge. The reserve order is: Jamaican Bolt; Dinkum Diamond; Vital Spirit; Magical Macey; Harrison George; and Confessional. 3.15 OLBG Park Stakes, Group 2, 3yo+, 7f: Darwin is likely to be dangerous if showing up but I suspect that Gale Force Ten might be the one to represent the O’Brien team. David Marnane’s Dandy Boy is another dangerous contender from across the Irish Sea but the vote goes to Sirius Prospect who looked back to his best last time at York. After first reserve Dandy Boy he may have most to fear from Godolphin’s Lockwood who also merits much respect along with the likes of Aljamaheer, Arnold Lane, Professor, Pastoral Player and Tawhid. 3.50 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes, Group 1, 3yo Entire Colts and Fillies, 1m 6f 132yds: A chance is taken that London Bridge’s French form could prove to offer decent value. A strong first reserve for me is Galileo Rock, followed by Excess Knowledge, Havana Beat and Libertarian but there are some that have that unexposed look about them and a couple with a string of wins to their names. Chester, Saturday: 2.20 Aejis Handicap, Class 3, 3yo+, 0-90, 7f 122yds: David Simcock’s Apostle gets the nod to score on his comeback run. The reserve order is: Ostaad; Talented Kid; Powerful Presence; Mehdi; Gatepost; Talent

Scout; and Balty Boys. 2.55 Stella Artois Stand Cup, Listed, 3yo+, 1m 4f 66yds: I am taking a chance that Wadaa will not turn up here and therefore reckon that Cameron Highland should take all the beating. Regal Hawk is first reserve followed by Area Fifty One, Cubanita, Ile de Re and Allied Powers. 3.30 Justforkicx Charity Nursery Handicap, 2yo, 0-95, 5f 110yds: Kickboxer may prove hard to beat after his recent victory at Haydock. Baytown Kestrel gets the first reserve slot followed very closely by: De Repente; Skye’s The Limit; Zalzilah; and Mick’s Yer Man. Selection summary (for reserves see above): Doncaster: Thursday: 1.40 Atlantic Affair 2.10 Switcher 2.40 Finflash 3.15 Wadaa Friday: 1.40 Ambiance 2.10 Time for Action 2.40 Ahzeemah 3.15 Coin Broker Doncaster, Saturday: 2.05 Cable Bay 2.40 Tiddliwinks 3.15 Sirius Prospect 3.50 London Bridge Chester, Saturday: 2.20 Apostle 2.55 Cameron Highland 3.30 Kickboxer Good Luck! Last week’s results: The final runners and outcomes were: Saturday: Haydock: 2.05 Jedward – 9th @ 15/2 2.40 Hay Dude – 2nd @ 14/1 3.15 Oriental Fox – 12th @ 10/1 3.50 Lethal Force – 9th @ 5/2 Ascot: 1.55 All non runners 3.30 Elidor – 8th @ 14/1 Kempton: 2.20 Prince Alzain – 4th @ 25/1 2.55 Emilio Largo – 8th @ 14/1 Sunday: Leopardstown: 5.45 Yellow Rosebud – non runner 6.15 Danadana – non runner 6.50 Planteur – non runner With the Leopardstown meeting moved to Saturday and no winners from the seven races with runners the financial outcome was a loss of 7 points to one point level stakes.

AN HONOUR FOR THE CLUB

Paul Dickov told the Official Website that having four internationals away on international duty is an honour for both the club and the individual players. Paul revealed that he believed that the international break was good for him as he analyses the game against Bournemouth ahead of the trip to Huddersfield. “On reflection, after last weekend, this international break is probably a good thing,” he said “It has given me the chance to get over it and look at the game a few times to analyse it. “What I am not going to do, after only six games, is talk about tiredness but what I think has happened with players who came in late; Reece Wabara, Ross Turnbull and Theo Robinson, is that they have suffered from not having a pre-season and little game time before joining. “On Saturday it started to catch up with them a little bit. What these two weeks do is allow the players who came in late to catch up with the rest of the squad. “With regards to the players who are out on international duty, I keep in contact while they are away to find out how they are training and doing fitness wise. “Young Luke (McCullough) only joined up with the Northern Irish Under 21 squad on Thursday so he has trained with us this week - he has had the benefit

of being with the squad. “Dean (Furman) and Bongani (Khumalo) will return next Tuesday after playing in South Africa’s World Cup qualifier. I spoke to the South African manager at length about the need for them to get them back here as soon as possible rather than playing in the second game, which is a friendly. “He agreed which I would like to thank him for as we have a big game at Huddersfield next week. “Unfortunately Theo (Robinson) won’t be back until Thursday next week as he has two World Cup games. “I would rather have them here but it’s a great honour for them and the club, so we have to live with it. “It’s fantastic for the club that we have four international players on duty this weekend.”

Food Served Every Saturday

LOCAL LEAGUES County Senior League It has been another busy week in the County Senior League, with a full fixture list in midweek and on the weekend.

Premier Division Swallownest Miners Welfare sit pretty at the top of the Premier Division, after winning all four of their games thus far. On Wednesday they beat Everest 5-0 at home, with Jay Short and Joe Rowlands both scoring twice for them. They then went onto win at home again on the weekend, seeing off Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves 3-2. Yet again it was Jay Short (2) and Joe Rowlands with the decisive goals. Oughtibridge WMSC also remaining undefeated in second place, following their promotion in the summer. They impressively registered back-to-back wins and clean-sheets this week. Firstly, they beat Houghton Main thanks to goal from Matt Spencer. On Saturday, they won 3-0 away to Everest. Worryingly for Everest it is their third straight defeat, following their opening day 4-0 victory over Swinton Athletic. Whilst on the subject of Swinton, they currently sit bottom, but have only played twice thus far. They were beaten 3-1 by Millmoor Juniors on Saturday. Jonathan Hill scored two of the goals in that game for Millmoor. It has been a good week for Millmoor, who also edged-out High Green Villa 2-1 on Wednesday night at Thorncliffe Playing Fields. The two wins take Millmoor to third place. Athersley Recreation Reserves remain unbeaten, but sit in mid-table as they have only played two games. They were impressive 4-0 winners away to Penistone Church on Wednesday thanks to goals from Craig Bouch, Thomas Harben, Kieran Scargill and Jason Bentley. Houghton Main bounced back from their midweek loss to Oughtibridge, with a 2-1 away win over fourth placed Handsworth. Both goals for Houghton Main were scored by 20 year old Kieron Hirst. Last years’ League Cup finalists High Green Villa have had a difficult start, losing their opening three games. This includes losses this week to Millmoor Juniors (1-2) and to Frecheville (1-3). Division One It has been goals galore in games involving Thorncliffe this week. They were 4-3 winners on Wednesday night over South Kirkby Colliery at Millar’s Walk. They followed that win up on Saturday with an excellent 9-1 have win over Davy FC. Charles Tunnard scored a hat-trick in that game Thorncliffe, taking them to the summit of Division One. Tim Council scored his second hat-trick of the season for second placed Penistone Church Reserves, as they beat Millmoor Juniors Reserves 4-2 at Grange Park. There was not sulking from Millmoor though, as they bounced back immediately with a 2-1 win over Joker FC on Saturday. Matt Barnfield inspired the victory for Millmoor with a brace to his name. Wickersley sit in third place, and remain undefeated after three games. They drew both their games this week though. Firstly, they were held to a rather entertaining 3-3 draw by last years’ Division Two winners Jubilee Sports. They drew again on Saturday 2-2 with Silkstone United, despite Matthew Langley converting two penalties in that game for them. As previously mentioned, Jubilee Sports drew 3-3

MILLERS CLAIM DERBY GLORY Rotherham United’s second-half blitz put local rivals Sheffield United to the sword infront of a sell-out New York Stadium. The Blades had the advantage at half-time thanks to Jose Baxter’s strike but second-half efforts from Kieran Agard, Daniel Nardiello and Rob Milsom saw Steve Evans’ men turn the game on it’s head and cap a memorable Sheffield double after dumping Sheffield Wednesday out of the Capital Cup earlier in the season. With talismanic duo Kari Arnason and Michael O’Connor absent because of their international call-ups with Iceland and Northern Ireland respectively, Evans was forced to reshuffle his pack with Claude Davis returning at the heart of the home rearguard. Recent recruit Pablo Mills was entrusted with the holding midfield role on his second home debut for the Millers following his cameo substitute role at Notts County last weekend, while Richard Brindley was handed a start with Mark Bradley ruled out by injury. In front of a red-hot atmosphere, the Blades almost stunned the home faithful in the early minutes when Florent Cuvelier was upended by Craig Morgan in an inviting position just outside the box. From the resultant free-kick, Tony McMahon struck a fantastic effort which curled over the home wall before crashing against the underside of the bar but fortunately for the Millers, the ball failed to cross the line and was cleared by a retreating home defender. At the other end, Joe Skarz lumped a hopeful ball into the box but with the visitors’ defence and ‘keeper Mark Howard in no-mans’ land, the onrushing Brindley lobbed the ball into the danger area but Harry Maguire was on-hand to clear the danger. Minutes later, Lee Frecklington pounced on a loose ball in the heart of midfield and with the visitors’ defence playing a high line in a bid to play Alex Revell offside, the ex-Peterborough midfielder spotted a gap to bisect the defensive line but as he advanced menacingly towards goal, he dragged his shot wide under pressure from Conor Coady. In a fast start, the Millers had a lucky escape when Chris Porter got on the wrong side of Davis, who appeared to trip the Blades frontman just inside the box but referee Andy D’Urso waved away visitors’ appeals for a spot kick. Morgan then saw yellow for a cynical lunge on Matt Hill but the visitors’ failed to punish the home side from the resultant free-kick when McMahon blasted over from a promising position. The Millers’ were given a shooting opportunity of their own when Cuvelier tripped Milsom just outside the box but Ben Pringle smashed the free-kick against the Blades’ wall before visitors’ skipper Michael Doyle

52 Wellgate, Rotherham S60 2LR with Wickersley on Wednesday. They were also held to a 2-2 draw at home to Rotherham Town at home on Saturday. These two results leave Jubilee also unbeaten thus far, and in fourth position. Sheffield Bankers prop-up the early table, following three straight defeats. This week they were beaten convincingly 4-1 at home by Sheffield Athletic midweek. They were unlucky on Saturday though, as they were downed 3-2 away to Hallam Reserves at Warminster Road. Division Two Kingstone United are the early leaders in Division Two, with a 100% record from their first four games. They had two wins this week; firstly they beat Bawtry Town 4-2 at the Keepmoat Stadium. On Saturday they were 5-0 winners over Frecheville Reserves, helped by Richard Dey’s second brace of the week. Boynton Sports made it back-to-back wins midweek, with a 3-1 victory over AFC Dronfield. AFC Dronfield bounced back on the weekend, when Liam Osborne scored four goals to inspire them to a 5-1 home win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves. The win takes Dronfield into second place. Maltby Main Reserves were big 6-1 winners over Bawtry Town at Muglet Lane on Saturday. The win followed a midweek 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield Lane Top, which leaves them with unbeaten start. Also unbeaten are North Gawber Colliery, who drew 2-2 away to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves on Wednesday night. They followed that on Saturday with a 2-1 home win over Sheffield Lane Top, Carl Woodhead and Luke Marsden with the goals for North Gawber.

blasted a volley into the home kop from distance. Just shy of the half-hour, Scott Shearer raced from goal to tackle Porter as he looked to latch onto a punt forward before clever footwork from Frecklington paved the way for a floated cross which was met by the head of Milsom, but his powerful header whizzed narrowly over the bar. With neither side on top, the Blades took a grip on the proceedings when they broke the deadlock eight minutes to half-time. Following the award of a throw on the right flank, a quick release caught the Millers napping and Baxter got on the wrong side of Mills near the byline and from an acute angle, threaded a low shot which beat Shearer before nestling in the far corner of the goal. The Millers were quick out of the blocks in the second stanza and Pringle’s floated ball fell invitingly for Revell, who scuffed an effort goalwards but Neill Collins bravely blocked his point-blank effort. With the words of Evans ringing in their ears, the Millers’ levelled the scores minutes later with a goal which came out of the blue. There looked little danger when Kieran Agard pounced on the loose ball but the ex-Yeovil frontman took a touch before striking a fearsome effort from distance which appeared to swerve in the air and the ball flew past Howard, who was helpless as the ball flew into the visitors’ goal. Just shy of the hour mark, McMahon flashed a cross which almost saw Baxter connect on the volley before Davis was fortunate when he appeared to nudge Porter in the box as he looked to latch onto a tantalising centre moments later. Minutes later, a quick throw released Pringle, whose first time cross saw sub Nardiello get on the wrong side of his marker but he failed to control the ball before Maguire was on-hand to snuff out Revell’s fizzed centre in the next phase of play. With the game finely poised, a superb one-two involving Pringle and Frecklington saw the latter strike an effort from distance which stung the palms of Howard before Pringle’s dipping volley blazed over the bar. However, the Millers took a firm grip on the encounter by taking the lead with eighteen minutes remaining. The ball fell at the feet of Nardiello in the box, who cleverly twisted in the box before being nudged over by McMahon and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. From the resultant penalty, Nardiello dusted himself down and kept his nerve as he blasted the ball past the despairing dive of Howard to find the corner of the net. The Millers were sniffing blood and they effectively sealed the game minutes later when Revell pounced on a mistake by the United rearguard and despite being temporarily held up by Maguire, the ball was placed into the advancing run of Milsom, who controlled smartly before firing a low drive from the edge of the box which beat the outstretched hand of Howard before smacking the inside of the post enroute to the net. The Blades’ frustration was summed up when McMahon saw yellow for speaking out of turn to the referee and Pringle almost rubbed salt into their wounds when his superb free-kick had Howard at full stretch as the ball arrowed towards the far corner. With time running out, Agard skipped past Maguire with a minimum of fuss before striking a low effort which was blocked by Howard at his near post before Ryan Flynn was the next to find himself in the book following a late tackle on Brindley in the dying minutes. GARDNER KIDS FOR BLOW A QUID SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Anthony Gardner is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after scans confirmed a tear of the Achilles tendon. The Owls’ skipper suffered the injury during the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough last Saturday at The Riverside Stadium. Manager Dave Jones said: “Anthony will see a specialist in London and have an operation on the Achilles. “It’s a blow to the boy and the team because he was playing very well and had a good start to the season. “We wish him all the very best in his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back as soon as possible.”

Supporters are reminded that the popular Kids for a Quid offer for Saturday’s game against Yeovil is only available before 5.00pm on Friday. KIRKLAND TAYLOR SCOOPS JOINS BEES AUGUST AWARD SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk

Chris Kirkland has won the swfc. co.uk Player of the Month award for August – lifting the title with a landslide vote of 45 per cent. The Wednesday goalkeeper has enjoyed an excellent start to the new campaign, turning in a string of outstanding displayers between the sticks. Kirkland continues his fruitful S6 stay having been an ever-present last season and winning numerous awards along the way. He said: “I am delighted to win this vote and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. “I’d also like to thank everyone who had the confidence in me to bring me to Sheffield Wednesday when my options were limited. “And I can’t speak highly enough of our goalkeeping coach Andy Rhodes and the medical staff at the club. “It is an absolute pleasure to play for this club and I’m not just saying that, I genuinely mean it. “The support we get home and away is unbelievable, it gives all the lads a boost when they run out to the kind of numbers we get. “We have shown a lot of resilience in the last three games, there is plenty to build on so hopefully we can get that first win under the belt soon.” Liam Palmer came second in the August Player of the Month with 9 per cent while Jeremy Helan finished third with 6 per cent. Thank you to all those who took time to vote.

Sheffield Wednesday defender Martin Taylor has signed for League 1 side Brentford on a 28-day emergency loan deal. Taylor will go straight into the Bees’ squad for their trip to Tranmere on Saturday. The 33-year-old joined Wednesday in August 2012 from Championship rivals Watford and has since made 13 appearances for the Owls in all competitions.

CONFIDENT COKE SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Owls midfielder Giles Coke is eager for the weekend to come around as Wednesday resume their league campaign following the international break. Prior to the break, Wednesday drew consecutive games with Leeds, Millwall and Middlesbrough and while the Owls are unbeaten in three, Coke believes that first win of the season is just around the corner. He told swfc.co.uk: “When that first win comes, we’ll go on to win many more, I’m confident of that. “We’re unbeaten in three games, we’re eager to get that first win, morale is high and I’m sure if you ask the boys, they’d all have been happy to have the Yeovil game last weekend. “While we haven’t won as yet, we are unbeaten in three after difficult games away from home against Leeds and Middlesbrough and we want to get back out there and build on those positives.” Yeovil, under the guidance of boss Gary Johnson, are the visitors to Hillsborough this weekend. “Yeovil did unbelievably well to get promoted last season and they have got some good players so it won’t be an easy game. “They’ll come here and aim to up their performance so we’ll have to bring our A game but I’m confident we can emerge with the maximum points.” Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

AWAY DAY TROUBLES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

United’s away day troubles continued, despite taking the leading in Saturday’s South Yorkshire derby at Rotherham. Jose Baxter’s first goal for the Blades secured a half-time lead but the Millers hit back after the interval with goals from Kieran Agard, Daniel Nardiello (penalty) and Rob Milsom. New co-owner HRH Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was part of the 2,536 Blades fans inside the New York Stadium. Manager Weir made three changes from last week’s league encounter. Howard, Porter and Cuvelier were handed starts with Long on international duty, Murphy injured and Taylor dropping to the bench, where he was joined by fellow striker Bunn, signed on loan from Manchester City on transfer deadline day. The Blades were inches from making the perfect start. Just three minutes had elapsed when Morgan fouled Cuvelier and McMahon’s 20-yard free-kick cannoned off the crossbar. Additionally, there were two penalty shouts as the ball dropped into the danger area off the woodwork when the ball appeared to hit the hand of former United defender Davis and Baxter was held back as he looked to latch on. The home side won the game’s first corner as a result of Howard racing from his own line but the goalkeeper saved comfortably on ten minutes when Frecklington burst through the back four but ran out of steam. Another Blades penalty appeal was waved away when Davis clumsily brought down Porter, who, moments later was denied by Shearer rushing from his goal. Milson headed over a cross from Frecklington but with the next serious attack, the visitors opened the scoring. A right-wing throw-in saw BAXTER lose Mills and then poke through Shearer from an acute angle, in

front of the Millers fans. Despite Revell looking dangerous in the air, the Blades defence protected goalkeeper Howard well and the Blades went into the break with a deserved slender advantage. Rotherham made positive change at the break, introducing a striker for a defender, and they created a chance within two minutes of the restart when Pringle’s cross found Revell but he was crowded out by a covering challenge from Collins. The Millers, however, were soon level. AGARD chanced his arm with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, which beat Howard. Weir’s team worked hard to immediately get back on top and, as in previous games, saw a lot of the ball. McMahon’s cross evaded both Baxter and Flynn before the Blades made a positive double change - Taylor and debutant Bunn replacing Porter and Flynn. There was more pain for the Blades, though, as Rotherham edged in front on 72 minutes, courtesy of penalty. McMahon was adjudged to have fouled NARDIELLO, who stepped up and powered home the spot-kick, to Howard’s left. And that wasn’t it. With their next attack, Rotherham added a third. This time Maguire gave away possession and Revell held onto the ball long enough to lay off to MILSOM, who placed his shot into the bottom corner, via a post. In the final ten minutes Howard saved from Pringle and Agard and to cap a miserable afternoon, McMahon and Bunn picked up late bookings. Rotherham: Shearer, Brindley, Skarz, Davis, Mills, Frecklington, Revell, Milsom, Pringle, Morgan (Nardiello 45), Agard. Unused: Hylton, Tubbs, Collin, Tidser, Rowe.

BOSS RUES NIGHT WITH MISTAKES WOODHOUSE MANAGERS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk

David Weir was left ruing individual errors as his team slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Rotherham United at the New York Stadium. Jose Baxter, with his first goal for the club, gave the Blades a deserved lead at the interval, but three goals in 24 secondhalf minutes for the hosts condemned United to a third straight league loss on the road. Speaking afterwards, Weir offered no excuses and was clearly angered by how his players undid their good work of the first period. He commented: “I am massively dissapointed with the result and how the game turned out in the end. “In the first-half we had a lot of the ball and played really well. We thoroughly deserved to be ahead at the break. “We were dominant and created a lot of opportunities, I thought we looked comfortable and I expected us to build on that. “But in the second-half we made some really poor mistakes and it is bitterly disappointing and very frustrating to lose in the manner we did. “The disparity between the first-half and second-half showing was massive and you can’t legislate for three individual errors.” Weir added: “Rotherham came out positively as we expected but we didn’t respond at all and the manner of the goals we conceded is something beyond my control. “There aren’t any positives immediately after losing a game in the way we did and I can fully understand the frustration of our fans.”

RE-SCHEDULED SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Wednesday 25th September is the re-scheduled date for ‘An evening with Curtis Woodhouse’ at our Legends of the Lane. Now a professional boxer, Curtis will be fighting in Liverpool for the Commonwealth lightweight title just four days before - a fight that will be shown live on Sky Sports, so it will be a fantastic chance to catch up with him on the back of what Blades fans hope will be a famous victory over Derry Mathews. The doors will open at 7pm and United will be serving our famous home made pie, peas and gravy (with plenty of Henderson’s and mint sauce as an option) from 7.30pm. There is also a free pint of house beer or house lager on arrival - if you are the nominated driver a soft drink is available as well! The Q&A session will kick off at around 8.30pm and United can guarantee that it will be one not to be missed. This will be led by Club Historian John Garrett and doubt you will find the path Curtis has taken through football and boxing entertaining. Tickets for this event are just £17 and are available from the Ticket Office on 0871 995 1889. A table of 10 can also be booked for just £150.

Blades: Howard, Maguire, Hill, Flynn (Bunn 69), Doyle, Porter (Taylor 69), Baxter, Collins, Cuvelier, Coady, McMahon. Unused: Westlake, McGinn, Ironside, McFadzean, Willis.
