I’ve just got security cameras fitted outside my house. Just to convince people that I have stuff worth stealing. I asked a question at the pub quiz last night. “Can anyone name one of the big five African animals?” “Rhino!” I said, “Shut up, Scoobie, it’s not your team’s turn yet!” Money can’t buy happiness but it will get you a better quality therapist. At a recent job interview: What would you consider to be your main weaknesses and strengths? Well my main weakness would be my issues with reality, telling what’s real from what’s not. And your strengths? I’m Batman. I own a small zoo and a pirate ship. Although not at the same time.... I don’t have that much Lego. I was with my nan at the airport when I pointed out a 747 on the runway. She squinted and said, “Which craft?” I said, “Not really nan, its just a means of transport technically beyond your comprehension.” I spoke to my mate who works in body art. I said, “Have you ever done a henna tattoo?” He said, “No mate, only humans.”

ITALIAN ACOUSTIC STAR TO PLAY THE LEADMILL Preview: Jack Savoretti 14/10/15 Leadmill Sheffield By Kt Evans Shining light a previously unexplored chapter of folksy acoustic music, Jack Savoretti is on the cusp of taking the international music industry by storm. Armed with a brand new album, “Written In Scars” which marked the performers most successful accomplishment to date, the star is set to perform at Sheffield’s Leadmill on 14th October as part of his very own UK headline tour. So…what do we already know at Italian born songster Jack Savoretti? With four studio albums under his belt, Jack released his very first record “Between The Minds” way back in 2007. Gaining a steady following, the record sold over 4500 copies and entered Jack into the UK top 100 album charts. The album remained in the top 100 for over 6 weeks and certified the star as having copious amount of potential. Album number two, “Harder Than Easy” was released in 2009 and saw Jack cross continents to record the album. It was mixed by Grammy award winning Jack Joseph Puig who has worked with the likes as U2, Snow Patrol, John Mayer and The Klaxons and was astonishing completed in only seven days. Savoretti’s third release came out on 4th June 2012, entitled “Before The Storm.” This thirteen track album gained positive reviews from the press, with the Daily Express Music Section awarding the

On Saturday 24th October, the city will once again be decorated with shades of pink and purple as Oxjam returns to ‘Takeover’ Sheffield, with an inner city music festival in aid of Oxfam. Part of a project that takes place across over 50 UK towns and cities, from Scotland to the Isle of Wight, Oxjam Sheffield is one branch of the country’s largest music festival, held annually throughout the month of October. With music stages ranging from intimate art spaces (Site Gallery) to iconic venues that define the local music scene (The Leadmill), Oxjam Sheffield is an ambitious project, driven by a team of volunteers dedicated to the fight against worldwide poverty and injustice. release 4 out of 5 stars. Fast forward three years and “Written In Scars,” Jack’s fourth and most recent album has been released. With UK sales of the new record approaching 50,000, this is without doubt the performers most accomplished and successful release to date. The album was critically acclaimed, with reviews including 4 stars from The Independent and 4 stars from Q Magazine. BBC Radio 2 made title track “Written In Scars” part of their A list playlist, along with crowning it album of the week on 1st February 2015. Supermarket giants Tesco make the record Album Of The Week on 10th April 2015… not to mention landing itself a top twenty UK album chart position. festival, as well as from the supporting warm up events and fundraising activities, is donated to Oxfam. Indeed, using a network of local music lovers to facilitate global change is the very concept that underpins Oxjam, an initiative fronted by Oxfam since 2006, which so far has raised over £2.5 million for the charity. In Sheffield, Oxjam 2015 is set to be bigger than ever; after relocating the heart of the festival to the Cultural Industries Quarter, local venues have been keen to offer their time, space and contacts to help tackle extreme poverty. In the lead up to the main event, groups of brave Sheffield fundraisers have set about drumming up money and support for Oxjam via a series of intense challenges, such as fire-walking, abseiling and living ‘below the line’ for a week. The end result is a 12-hour long, 8-venue music festival, entirely driven by the local community. Oxjam Sheffield boasts the involvement of both The Leadmill and Queens Social Club, renowned Sheffield venues that play home to some of the most successful and beloved musicians across the world. Three of the city’s most loved smaller live spots will also host a full evening of music (The Rocking Chair, The Washington, The Royal Standard), and these are supplemented by more unique and unorthodox spaces, such as Site Galley and real ale pub Rutland Arms. Oxjam Sheffield also has the support of Sheffield Hallam University, with their union bar (Hallam HUBS) completing the list of this year’s venues. One wristband gives access to all of the above and opportunity to see live the depth of talent from across these seven hills. The full lineup now includes over 40 musicians and bands. Preview: One Direction, 29-31/10/15, Motorpoint Arena By Kt Evans
It would be an almost impossible task to scour the world for one person who doesn’t know at least a single One Direction song. Adored by fans across all continents, the world’s biggest group are set to hit the Steel City with a three date session at Motorpoint Arena from 29th tp 31st October. So…prepare for absolute hysteria as Harry, Liam, Nial and Louis hit the seven hills…God help us… Whether you love them or hate them, One Direction have done a bloody good job of keeping up their profile since their stink on X Factor three years ago. A group put together by music mogul Simon Cowell on the ITV reality music show, the former five piece have since toured the world, sold hundreds of millions of records along with being showered with awards across all continents. The tour is in support of the groups brand new album “Four,” their most successful record to date. Having smashed its way onto the number one chart position in over 85 different countries, the record also sold 2 million copies in its first week of release. The album has also seen them make history by becoming the first ever act to debut at the top of the US Billboard charts with each of the band’s first four albums. In July, 1D fans across the globe were in bits after it was announced that Zayn Malik was to leave to group. Commenting that he “just wants to live a normal life for a while,” the group however remained strong and soldiered on throughout their most turbulent
moment of their career. However, only last month it was announced that One Direction are to take a year off from the industry, to focus on their own individual solo projects. By no means a statement to suggest the band are splitting up for good, their upcoming tour will therefore be the last we see of them for twelve months or so. One Direction perform at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena from
29th – 31st October 2015. See the website www.sheffieldarena.co.uk for all the show info.

DONCASTER RACECOURSE TRIUMPHS AT NATIONAL RACECOURSE CATERING AWARDS The team from Doncaster Racecourse were celebrating this week after coming out on top at the National Racecourse Catering Awards that took place at Royal Windsor Racecourse on Monday 5 October. The prestigious awards, now in their sixth year see racecourses from around the country come together to celebrate excellence in the area of racecourse catering and hospitality, as well as recognising the brands and suppliers who provide food and beverage available to racegoers. Doncaster Racecourse came out on top in three categories; The Old Weighing Room was judged ‘Best Casual Dining Experience on a Racecourse’ whilst racegoers voted the course best in class with the ‘People’s Choice Award’. Long serving Catering Manager Steven Sharp was named Catering Personality 2015, recognising his many years of service to the industry, and the areas in which he has helped serve Doncaster Racecourse. Kieran Gallagher, executive director of Doncaster Racecourse said: “We were delighted to collect these Awards, as we know that the quality of our catering is very important to our customers. We have a great team at Doncaster Racecourse, who work incredibly hard to make sure we keep standards up at all times. To win the People’s Choice Award
is particularly satisfying as it was voted on by the public, so to know that people appreciate the work we do is great. “I must also pass on my congratulation to Steven Sharp, who has worked tirelessly with the hospitality industry for over 40 years. His time as a Further Education lecturer coupled with his in depth knowledge of hospitality catering has led to great achievements in personnel training and customer service delivery
at Doncaster Racecourse in recent years. I am thrilled that his peers within the industry have recognised his contribution, and the award is a just reward for his continued and unwavering support of people who join this industry sector.” For more information about racing and events at Doncaster Racecourse or to buy tickets, visit www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk or call 01302 304200.
CIRCUS EVOLUTION BRINGS CIRCUS MAYHEM TO BARNSLEY! Matchless in its madness – an absurd circus variety show for all ages UK tour opens at The Civic, Barnsley, Thursday 22 October Circus and comedy combine in Circus Mayhem, an absurd variety show for audiences of all ages presented by Circus Evolution, the team behind last year’s smash hit, Bromance. Circus Mayhem comes to The Civic, Barnsley on 22 October at 7.30pm. Bringing a festival feel to the theatre experience, Circus Mayhem sees three contrasting artists come together for a fun, freewheeling evening - cycling pianist Rimski, puppeteer and quick-fire painter Jon Hicks and sweet slapstick trio Company BettiCombo. First up is Rimski, the back-pedalling, side-winding pianist, who will regale audiences in the foyer before the show and in the interval. Playing and singing as he rides, Rimski dazzles with his flawless finger work, original songs, clowning, acrobatics and the occasional firework. Joining him as a special guest in Barnsley is Miranda La Mutanta and her Penny Farthing. Over on the main stage is Jon Hicks who has been enthralling audiences with his high-skill repertoire of artistic oddities
since 2000. Hicks’ deadpan puppetry, awesome speed painting, kicking musical scores and big time finales have earned him the title of “International Man of Artistry”. For the finale, sweet slapstick trio Company BettiCombo from France and Italy tell an engaging tale of triumphs and defeats. They burst on to the stage to create an endless playground game, building precarious pyramids, towers and columns from countless white buckets and a towering Chinese pole. Their complimentary skills deliver a minimasterpiece of circus comedy. You can watch a Circus Mayhem trailer on YouTube. Tickets and more information regarding Circus Mayhem can be found at www.barnsleycivic.co.uk/ events/circus-mayhem

A GOOD NEWS STORY FROM CLUBLAND Here at the Mercury we are always delighted to report good news from our venues here in South Yorkshire – and we hear the new Management Committee at Wadsley Bridge have been passing on some really positive reports to the members! The Club has reported a record trading surplus of over £35,000 for the first six months of the year, after recording deficits in the same period for several years. We couldn’t let this pass without speaking to the Committee to find out how they had managed to achieve such a result, which they acknowledge is due in no small part to the support and efforts of the members. This was their response: “Firstly we looked at all the problems we faced. We began by negotiating much better deals with our trade suppliers, producing an immediate benefit for the members. We then asked the members what they wanted from their club – the answers were better entertainment and

a chance for the facilities to be used by the wider community. So we invested in more expensive, better quality acts. We also arranged a number of special events, which needed tickets to be sold to cover the costs – and our membership responded by turning out on our normal Saturday and Sunday evenings, and also snapping up the tickets for the special nights, guaranteeing a full house. We have advertised to the wider community as well – promoting our function rooms and catering service – so that non-members could have the chance to visit the club and see what benefits membership has to offer. Not only have the regular members backed us, we have attracted back a large number of the dormant members who paid their subs but never came, and new members have joined after attending private functions.

RECORD SEPTEMBER SALES Motor manufacturers are upbeat after a huge uplift in September sales, boosted by the new 65 plate. Demand has been remarkably strong for the new ranges of small petrol engines, and the 12.3% petrol increase was the main factor pushing total registrations to 462,517 – 8.6% ahead of last September’s figure. The Ford Fiesta retained its position as Britain’s top-selling car in an industry increasingly dominated by smaller-engined vehicles. The Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus were second

and third in the rankings. Although the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of the 10 bestselling cars this year, it dropped out of the September list along with the Audi A3. It is possible that people had already turned against larger-engined cars, but it is more likely that Mercedes and Audi were suffering from the reluctance of consumers to buy diesels -if indeed this is the case! It is too early to tell whether the Volkswagen emissions scandal will have a knock on effect on registration figures of diesel cars. This is due to the news coming too late into the month of September, we’ll get a clearer picture next month. VW was actually the third biggestselling car maker in September with a modest 3.73% growth.
Similarly, Audi and Skoda enjoyed growth of 11.36% and 3.58% respectively in September. However, it is highly likely that lead times and the typically busy September may have temporarily masked any negative effect to VAG sales. The September figures for used car sales make a very interesting comparison - the best seller was the VW Sharan Diesel, with the Passat Estate, Polo, Golf and Touran all featuring in the top ten, whilst the sister car Seat Leon Diesel was also very highly placed! However the diesel software scandal only broke on September 21st, and as a consequence may not have impacted highly on the results for the month.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
My poor run of fish came to an end this week, and my good run of meeting nice people continued! I returned to Blake Hall Fishery in Staffordshire, a venue I’d visited for the first time just a few weeks ago, to see if I could catch on the feeder, one of my favourite methods of fishing. I arrived bright and early, and set up on peg 59, offering a far bank margin, and plenty of open water with depths to about six feet. My trusty (and ancient!) Sonik Sports SK3 twin tip was unleashed once more, fitted with a light two ounce test curve tip, and I set up a very simple inline feeder packed with pellets. My freebies had been soaked in lake water to which I’d added a splash of Mainline Baits Bloodworm Syrup, before leaving the pellets to mop it up for a minute or two and then draining the water; nothing complicated. By the time my rig was ready, the pellets were just sticky enough to fill the frame of the feeder, and a single grain of corn placed on the hook became the target. Dropped out about forty yards, I tightened up and sat back to wait….and wait! It quickly became obvious that the fish were shying off the feeder, so a conventional cage feeder was plugged with pellets, the hook link lengthened, and I recast to the same spot with a banded pellet on the hook. A few minutes later, and the tip slowly pulled around before I lifted into a bream (again!) of a couple of pounds which came obligingly to the net. At least I wasn’t going to blank! The fishing was very difficult; a new weather system the day before had filled the lakes with rainwater, coloured things up a bit, and certainly reduced the lake temperature. As a result, I was constantly having to chop and change hook baits, and tactics. A couple of fish on maggot, then some on pellet, then yet more on meat, and a change to the bomb, so I worked hard for my fish. As the day progressed, the stamp of fish improved, and I soon had a string of decent barbel to well over 5lbs, and carp into double figures which were interrupted by roach, perch and skimmers as my bag steadily increased. My neighbour was finding the fishing as tough as I was, and after initially setting up a carp rod, asked if I could offer some assistance in setting up a brand new quivertip rod which he had bought, but never used. I was happy to help, so reeled in and shared a few rig bits to allow Les to set up with a little more finesse as I guided him through the basics. Happily, within a few minutes, the bites started to come and he was soon catching fish! We chatted amicably, and I made a new friend…all for the price of a swivel and a bead! After Les departed, Fishery staff member Jennie came to catch up for a few minutes, and explained that the ‘Roy’ often did well on casters, a bait I didn’t have with me. Jennie left to attend to other tasks, and I was very pleasantly surprised when a car pulled up next to me, the ‘Roy’ got out and introduced himself , then proceeded to hand over half a pint of casters as Jennie had mentioned my lack of them to him! What a nice chap! He wasn’t the only angler who stopped to chat either; another gentleman advised me that the fishery’s own pellets were obviously good, and I volunteered that I had run out of those, so he opened the boot of his car, rooted through his tackle and handed me enough to last the session! Another nice chap, and very amenable with it! As I said, my run of meeting nice people continued this week. Back to the fishing; my margin spots, which I’d been
steadily feeding with corn and pellets, came alive at bang on 1600, the time when matches usually finished and the big fish moved in to mop up discarded bait. I had banked on this happening, so was able to tempt a number of bonus fish from right under my feet, including some hefty bream which took a small piece of meat held on the hook with a grass hair stop. Believe it or not, I was recently asked how to keep meat on the hook, and the old grass stop trick is one that some modern day anglers have never heard of! Another change to banded pellet kept the fish coming despite the atrocious rain which continued to drum loudly on my shelter. The skies eventually cleared, and as I considered packing up, the rod tip lunged around as something bigger hit the bait! A short five minute battle saw the fish plod off into open water, and despite gentle pressure being applied, I couldn’t seem to get it to turn my way. A 5lb hooklink meant a delicate touch was required, but a sudden lunge saw the hook link part and I lost what was undoubtedly the best fish of the day….and I hadn’t even seen it! At that point, it seemed appropriate to pack up, so I quickly loaded the van between downpours and got in just before the heavens opened! To sum up; another super days sport at Blake Hall Fishery, new friends made, and more lovely people met including Mark Horton and wife Kerry who also popped down for a chat. I have to say that I don’t think I’ve found a friendlier fishery than this one, and with the quality of fishing on offer, I daresay I’ll be back again!

There were no County Senior League games this weekend, as most clubs were in Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA cup action. S&HCFA Senior Cup 2nd Round There were four County Senior teams involved in the Senior Cup. Firstly, Thorpe Hesley were defeated 4-1 by AFC Emley on Wednesday night. Premier Division leaders Swallownest FC booked their place in the 3rd Round with an extra-time victory over Haworth Colliery. Goals from Tom Crosby (two penalties), Reece Blake and Ashley Lane helped Swallownest to a 4-2 win. Kieran Hirst and Jake Ward were both on target to settle the all County Senior League tie, between Houghton Main and Oughtibridge WMFC, in Houghton Main’s favour. S&HCFA Junior Cup 1st Round It was a mixed bag for County Senior League teams in the Junior Cup. U21 Division leaders Handsworth Parramore U21 were convincing 10-0 winners over Cartworth Moor. Second placed Stocksbridge Park Steels U21 also had few problems, as they beat Elsecar Dynamoes 4-1 away from home. However, it was all good news for the league’s participants. South Kirkby Colliery U21 lost 1-0 at home to Civil Service Vets and Athersley Recreation U21 lost 3-2 at Sheerien Park to King’s Athletic. NEW BOSS REDFEARN IMPRESSED WITH FIRST SESSION New Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn confirmed he has been impressed with his current staff after he completed his first official day with the club. Redfearn held training in the morning before addressing the media at a press conference at AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon. At the press call he confirmed that Eric Black will become his assistant manager, whilst also confirming that he isn’t looking to add to his backroom team at this current time as he looks to tap into the skills of the current setup. “I think we are okay for the moment, if we feel that we need some extra help then maybe but we already have good
people and that is really apparent,” he told Millers Player. “I want to utilise these people and their skills which will help me, help them and help the club.” Redfearn oversaw his first session at Roundwood today and admitted that he was impressed with what he witnessed, as he looks to prepare his side for his first game in the dugout against Brentford at Griffin Park this Saturday. “I am very pleased. We have had a great morning,” continued the former Leeds United boss. “I have got to meet the staff personally, although I did speak to them on the phone over the weekend. I put one or two ideas to them, and they also expressed one or two ideas and we have had a really good morning. It has been really high tempo, technically and tactically gifted morning, we have got to use that now and take it through the week and into this game with Brentford.”

NEW BOSS AIMING HIGH Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn says he is looking to take the club ‘to the next level’ after he was officially unveiled as the new Millers’ boss today. The 50-year-old spoke to the media for the first time following his appointment on Friday, after agreeing a deal until the end of the 2017/18 season. Alongside Chairman Tony Stewart, the former Leeds United manager spoke of his excitement about the job ahead, after he took training for the first time at club training headquarters at Roundwood. “It is a real honour,” the new boss told www.themillers.co.uk “There are a lot of talented people out
there who would have really loved this job, and I am the fortunate person to get it. It is a real opportunity to pick this club up now and try and take it to the next level, and this is what we are looking to do.” Redfearn, who impressively guided Leeds to safety last season, also enjoyed a long playing career which saw him represent the likes of Barnsley, Charlton Athletic and Bradford City in the Premier League. He made his name heading up the famed Leeds United Academy, before taking the top job after a successful spell as caretaker manager. After leaving Elland Road last season
he admitted the stability and vision attracted him to take the reins at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “The stability that was talked about, the way forward, the vision, it excited me,” he added. “The shared vision (with the board) of where we want the club to go is a big thing. It is an upwardly mobile football club. It has had a lot of recent success, we have a fantastic facility and it has captured the imagination of the local people. The club is in a rich vein of success at this point in time, the challenge now is to pick the baton up and take us to the next level.”

CLUB’S STANCE REGARDING CEO GAVIN BALDWIN Following media reports and speculation linking CEO Gavin Baldwin with a move away from Doncaster Rovers, we can confirm that there is no truth in any of these rumours. Gavin Baldwin said: “I regard myself as honoured to work for Doncaster Rovers Football Club and very lucky that our owners have such little motivation for self gain “I can confirm that I am as I always have been, absolutely 100% committed to Doncaster Rovers Football Club. This is a very exciting time for the Football Club and for all at Club Doncaster as we continue to develop both to make the

business as one stronger. “The final piece in the jigsaw is securing the new manager and the right man to drive Rovers forwards in the short, mid and long term. The club remains ambitious for Championship football and we are confident that we can still achieve the play-offs. “These are very exciting times for us all here and we all believe that in Doncaster Rovers we can deliver the team that our supporters deserve and in utilising the product that is Club Doncaster we can make our communities proud, an ambition I am not aware of anywhere else in the country. “The Owners are committed to Doncaster Rovers, Club Doncaster and to Doncaster as a town and to have such a singular vision is as unique as it is exciting. Their only motivation is for us to improve in all we do for the people of Doncaster and this includes building a successful football team.” The Rovers defender earned his fifth international cap when he replaced Manchester United’s Paddy McNair in Thursday’s pivotal win over Greece which booked their place at the finals in France next summer. The 3-1 victory over the 2004 winners will end a 30 year wait for the country to appear at a major football tournament. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Luke and his teammates on their achievements. Luke will be back in domestic action on Saturday when Rovers welcome Bradford City to Keepmoat Stadium.

A LETTER OF THANKS Club receive message from widow of Richard Hawcroft. Doncaster Rovers were the honoured recipients of a letter from the widow of Richard Hawcroft; the amateur footballer who recently passed away unexpectedly. A minute’s applause on the 8th minute of the Rovers v Barnsley game was impeccably received while the supporters from both clubs helped to raise in excess of £520 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. “Hi Clare, I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for everything that everybody did for my daughter and I on Saturday.
The minute’s applause was extremely emotional and overwhelming - but to everyone involved in making that happen, I can’t thank them enough. I feel honoured that so much effort has gone in by so many people for my amazing husband. I trust that you will pass on my thanks to anyone and everyone involved - yourself, Mary, Ryan and the 2 great guys that looked after us throughout the tour. Andy also needs a special mention because without him nothing would have happened. I am sure however that everyone knows the close friendship that they had. With so many thanks, Louise Hawcroft”

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES BACK TO WINNING WAYS United leapfrogged Rochdale and moved back into the top six thanks to a hardearned home victory. The personnel on show indicated changes in the formation and at kick-off it was confirmed that Basham was in defence, Scougall, Coutts and Baxter in midfield, with Done, Sharp and Adams making up a front three. United created a chance in the first minute with Scougall and Sharp involved before Done, against his former club, raced from left to right ahead of shooting at goalkeeper Lillis. For the visitors, McDermott dragged a shot wide after coming out of a challenge with Coutts and Done, whilst Mendez-Laing tried his luck from distance on two occasions. But the Blades, despite lacking a little cohesion early on, were the
dominant force. A move involving McEveley, Coutts and Sharp saw Scougall unable to force home Done’s low cross, whilst Sharp charged down a Lillis kick but the goalkeeper recovered. Collins headed over United’s first corner but the opening goal arrived with 29 minutes gone. Baxter’s precise pass found ADAMS in space on the left and the teenager slid the ball under the advancing Lillis. The Blades were unable to turn the screw and Rochdale were forced into a change minutes before getting back on level terms on 37 minutes. There looked little danger but Mendez-Laing nicked the ball away before going over Done’s leg away from goal and referee Langford pointed to the spot. Captain Vincenti took
responsibility for the penalty and drilled home at the Kop end. Rochdale, however, were level for just three minutes. ADAMS doubled his and United’s tally with a neat finish but the architect was Sharp, who held the ball up, beat his marker and then delivered a perfect cross over the head of Rafferty. Scougall and McEveley picked up knocks in the first half and didn’t re-appear for the second. Kieran Wallace and McGahey were the replacements, meaning a return to midfield for Basham. The Blades started the second half well and there were appeals for a penalty when Basham’s shirt was clearly pulled by Vincenti from Coutts’ cross. Rochdale remained a threat. A tremendous challenge from Freeman prevented Mendez-Laing from getting a shot away, whilst Howard saved from Noble-Lazarus at the front post and Vincenti headed over
a Rafferty cross. The leveller, though, did arrive on 72 minutes. A free-kick was only half cleared and after Vincenti’s shot on the turn was pushed into the air by Howard, ALESSANDRA forced home at the back post, despite the efforts of Wallace. Again, Rochdale did not stay on level terms long. With the next attack the Blades regained the lead. Done’s shot was deflected wide and from Baxter’s corner, COLLINS forced the ball home at the near post. A number of United’s players were feeling the pace in the closing 15 minutes as the visitors looked for a third equaliser. Done continued to work hard as he completed his first 90 minutes of the season and the Blades held out to collect three more valuable points and could have extended the advantage in the final minute of added time but Adams was denied a hat-trick by Lillis.
HAPPY ADKINS Nigel Adkins felt his side were good value for Saturday’s victory over Rochdale in Sky Bet League One. A first-brace from Che Adams put the Blades in the ascendency at halftime and despite being pegged back for a second time after the interval, Neill Collins netted the decisive goal in front of the Kop to give United a third consecutive victory at Bramall Lane in all competitions. Adkins remarked: “It was a pleasing and deserved victory, we looked very dangerous going forward. We changed the formation slightly to get the players in positions where they feel most comfortable. Jose Baxter and Billy Sharp claimed excellent assists for Che’s two goals. But for the winning goal, credit to Andy Crosby, we work hard on our set-pieces and it was one off the training ground, we got three players attacking the near post
and with how Rochdale mark it gives you a chance and the delivery was excellent.” The Blades were forced into a re-shuffle at the break with Kieran Wallace and Harrison McGahey coming on and Adkins was quick to praise the character his side demonstrated. “Despite conceding the two goals we reacted on both occasions to the setback by going down the other end and regaining our lead and Neill Collins always looks a threat from set-pieces. We had to make two enforced changes at half-time with Jay McEveley going for an x-ray on foot injury, whilst Stefan Scougall was feeling ill following a heavy whack to the back of his head. Having to make those changes and changing things round again wasn’t ideal, but Kieran and Harrison slotted in and did well, it shows the importance of having a squad of players.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 WORLD AT HIS FEET A SONG FOR CARLOS Owls goalkeeper coach Andy Rhodes has said Joe Wildsmith’s call-up to the England Under21 set up is a fantastic achievement for the academy product. From his first meeting with Wildsmith, Rhodes has always been confident that the talented custodian would be destined for first team football. High praise indeed coming from the experienced coach, who also boasts over 400 appearances between the sticks in a playing career which included a League Cup final appearance for former club Oldham. He said: “When I first met Joe at 12, I knew he would play first team football for Sheffield Wednesday. “He’s done that, he’s established himself in
the squad as a senior player and the world’s at his feet. “I know Eric Steele, the age group goalkeeping coach for England, and I said it was about time Joe got the call. It’s a fantastic achievement for him. “Hopefully he’ll get to play on Tuesday. “He was outstanding last week against Holland. His parents were out there to see him and they were over the moon. “They were more excited than him because he’s so laid back, he’s horizontal. His temperament is fantastic and that is why he’s looked so assured.” Competition in the goalkeeping department at the club is fierce and that is something which Rhodes believes is of huge benefit to all
parties. He added: “Joe is one of four senior keepers. It’s not just Keiren Westwood and Lewis Price. “Him and Cameron Dawson are right there pushing. And they push each other as well. “Those two have done fantastic and Cami deserves as much credit as Joe.”
QPR BEAMBACK SOLD OUT The corporate beamback for the Owls’ Championship visit to QPR on Tuesday 20 October has now sold out. Tickets for the capital clash in the 1867 Lounge were snapped up inside 30 minutes, leading to the club opening Dooleys and the Springett Suite. The additional tickets have also been sold, thus there are no remaining places for this event – the first of its kind in S6. The beamback, which will be broadcast at Hillsborough in association with ADI, is another building block in place as the Owls continue to enhance the supporter experience.
Carlos Carvalhal has spoken of his pride and appreciation of the song that has taken hold at Hillsborough and at Wednesday games up and down the country. The ‘Carlos had a dream’ number has proved hugely popular, particularly since the Owls’ dramatic victory over Brentford in late September. The song was then bellowed out during
Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Preston at Hillsborough and Carlos has said: “When the game at Brentford finished, I loved the song. I was feeling like when the soldiers come home after winning the war. These kind of songs. I thought it was a very nice song but I didn’t understand absolutely anything of what they were singing. I liked it very much and I was
YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE
Hillsborough last Saturday as skipper Glenn Loovens handed the native Sheffielder his shirt, together with a wreath to lay on behalf of everyone at SWFC. The Frontline Walk, which commemorates the Centenary of WWI, started on Wednesday and ends this Sunday. Steve said: “I would like to thank both Wednesday and United for their invaluable help and everyone who sponsored me and wished me well. “I feel humbled by the number of people who believe in the reason I am walking. “The ABF have also passed on their thanks.”
Following a good old-fashioned Steel City battle, the Owls emerged triumphant over the Blades – and Wednesdayite Steve Milne is flying the flag for his club as result. Steve was recently the architect of a unique competition between Wednesday and United following his commitment to participate in a 100km walk along the Western Front in Europe. The concept was simple – which team’s supporters donated the most sponsorship money on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund would have the honour of Steve donning their home shirt for the trek. And we are delighted to say that Wednesday won hands down, with Steve not only getting to wear his beloved blue and white, but doing so having raised the highest amount in the whole country! Prior to the walk, Steve was given the VIP treatment at

LAVERY LOANED TO POMPEY Caolan Lavery has joined League Two side Portsmouth on loan. The forward has signed an emergency loan deal with the Fratton Park club until Tuesday 12 January. The 22-year-old has made 39 appearances in total for the Owls, scoring six goals along the way. He will now join Pompey and is eligible for their clash at Newport County on Saturday.
