the last decade has created a social return on investment of £30.5 million, or £3.50 for every £1 invested. Yet The Source is not resting on its laurels and in October 2013 the organisation achieved another milestone, with over 1,000 learners enrolled on apprenticeships or NVQ qualifications for the first time. Dale Robinson, head of sales and marketing at The Source, says, “It has been fantastic to see our apprenticeship provision grow during the last decade, and I am incredibly proud that The Source has played such a vital role in helping to develop a skilled, motivated and qualified Sheffield City Region workforce. Apprenticeships provide invaluable opportunities for young people, and I would urge all business owners and managers across the region to consider the benefits which an apprentice could bring to their organisation.” Jaqui Copley, owner of The Elite Group in Sheffield, employed an apprentice through The Source in March 2013 and says, “Our
apprentice has had a fantastic impact on the business during the last few months, bringing an abundance of enthusiasm and new ideas. It has been inspiring to see how she has developed during her apprenticeship, and I am proud that we have been able to offer her the opportunity to learn and gain experience with the business. I will certainly be looking to recruit another apprentice in the near future.” For more information about apprenticeships contact Dale Robinson on dale.robinson@ thesourceacademy.co.uk or visit www. thesource.meadowhall.co.uk

Copley’s Column The regular Thursday night entertainment at the Victoria Dronfield was this week provided by top local duo, Russ and the Fox (comprising ex-Human League guitarist Russ Dennett and John ‘Fox’ Richardson who has recently returned from Malibu where he attended the fiftieth birthday party of Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen as a surprise guest.) John and Russ have been together musically for fifteen years and are a very professional act. They of course are also members of Dronfield’s top band, Junkyard Dog, who were appearing the following night at Dronfield Pioneer Club. The Pioneer is now providing top entertainment, credit for this going to committee member Julie Bagshawe. No prizes for guessing where we went on Friday, it was of course for our second helping of Russ and John together with John Wynne and Fraser Bird who make up Junkyard Dog. The band was excellent as usual and had plenty of dancers on the large dance floor. The Pioneer is a pleasant club with many young members, which is always nice to see, since gegerally I notice a distinct lack of the younger end in many of the clubs I visit. With clubs closing at an alarming rate, it is essential that the older members who will not last for ever are replaced at the younger end for the clubs to survive. Normally, after two consecutive nights out, my much younger girlfriend, Caron, starts to feel the strain, but we had to go out on Saturday night to the Forest Showbar to celebrate the birthday of co-owner and popular local vocalist, Gary Phillips. It is testament to the popularity of Gary that the pub was filled to capacity when we arrived at 9.00 p.m. and there were plenty there when we left at 1.00 a.m. Gary had not got up to sing when we left but we were well pleased to be entertained by Tony Christian and had the delightful company of his girl Linda, who invited us to sit at her table, when no seating was available. Tony performed a marathon set and was followed on stage by top local entertainer, Geoff Somers, who has an excellent voice. It

was a most enjoyable evening (it always is at the Forest) and just as I thought it could not get any better, I won the raffle. I was able to have a good catch up with my pal of many years, Marc Lawrence who is now home for Christmas after a long stint on the cruise ships. Marc will be appearing at the Victoria early in the New Year. Sheffield Wednesday had an opportunity to shine on the early televised game on Saturday against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town. I am sad to report that they were abysmal. However there was at least a little glimmer of footballing cheers as the Blades registered three points away for the first time this season following a long trip to Bristol City.

FIRST STRICTLY CELEBRITIES ANNOUNCED The first celebrities to join the hugely popular Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour 2014 have just been announced. Former England Rugby World Cup winner, and Chairman of the anti-bullying StandUp Foundation, Ben Cohen; Coronation Street star Natalie Gumede; and actor and funny man Mark Benton will be wowing arena audiences across the country following their huge popularity and early success on this year’s ratings winning BBC One show. More celebrities will be announced very soon. The multi-million pound show production comes to the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield for two performances on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th January 2014. Tickets are on sale now. Alongside the exciting celebrity line-up, Craig Revel Horwood, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli are back as the tour’s formidable judges. They will be on hand to give their expert feedback and all important scores to the celebrities and their dance partners. They will be joined by former Strictly favourite Lisa Riley, who returns to the glitterball dance floor as host of the 2014 tour. On announcing his place on the tour, Ben Cohen said: “I love to test myself and Strictly has certainly been a challenge, but I’m growing in confidence with every week that passes and I’m starting to feel at home on the dance floor now. What better way to take things one step further than to perform in front of thousands of people every night, in some of the biggest arenas in the country? Count me in!” Natalie Gumede added: “I’m hugely excited to be part of the Strictly tour, it’s the perfect excuse to keep dancing! I’m having so much fun and I’ve learnt so much already, I just want the experience to last as long as possible. Dancing for all the fans who have voted to keep me in the show will be really special, I can’t wait.” Mark Benton also commented: “Entertaining arena audiences with my ever evolving dance steps will be a fantastic way to start the New Year. I cannot wait to hit the road and recreate my favourite routines for fans around the country.” The 2014 live tour will feature a brand new lineup of audiences’ favourite celebrities and dancers, including Ben, Natalie and Mark, from the hugely popular BBC One show. Strictly fans get to watch the celebrity dancing couples competing live for the TV judges’ votes and then get to vote themselves with their mobile phones. Arena audiences will experience Strictly’s glitz, glamour and breathtaking choreography, courtesy of judge Craig Revel Horwood, who is directing the live show for the fourth year running. The tour has received rave reviews in the national newspapers since it began – the Mail on Sunday awarded the 2013 tour a 4 Star review and the Daily Telegraph said: “The glitzy occasion still sparkles... It was Fab-u-lous”. The Sunday Express have previously said of the tour: “7000 of us raised the roof. Does it get much better? Not often.” Last December a peak audience of more than 13 million viewers tuned in to watch the Strictly final on BBC One, when gymnast Louis Smith was crowned the winner. The television format, also known as Dancing With The Stars, entered the Guinness Book of World Records three years ago as the world’s most successful reality television show and 48 different versions of the show have been licenced across the world by BBC Worldwide.
A woman came up to my till and showed me a £10 note, she said, “Can you change this for two fives please?” I said, “Sure.” and gave her the money. Then she just looked at me and said, “I need another £9.90.” My mate Dave asked me if I wanted him to recite the first twenty one letters of the alphabet to me. “It’s up to U” I replied. My careers adviser said: “You seem to have no discernible skills or abilities, your decision making and judgement are terrible and you’re always totally convinced you’re right when you’re completely wrong. You really only have two job options: You can be a weatherman or a Premier League referee.” I’m quite a handsome guy, in a certain light. A 15-Watt one. James Bond would be a much better spy if he didn’t keep telling everyone who he was... The wife woke me up this morning.. “Baby.. baby, wake up.” She said, shaking me. “Some guy’s just stolen our car.” “What?” I yelled, “The Porsche?” “Yes, the Porsche. But don’t worry, I was very quick thinking.” She said, “I got the registration number.” “You always have to get the last word in”, complained my wife. “Well”, I replied, “I am better than you at crosswords”. When I got home from the pub last night,I said to my wife,”Before you say anything,I don’t have a drinking problem so you might as well just give it a rest.” “Dave, you’ve had enough. Let me call you a cab mate,” replied the barman. I got refused entry at the coffee fanatics dinner party last night. Serves me right for wearing a tea shirt. I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car. The Grim Reaper came to me last night and I fought him off with a vacuum cleaner. Talk about Dyson with death! An E-flat, a G-flat, and a B-flat walk in to a bar and the bartender says: “I’m sorry, we don’t serve minors. Where did Noah keep all the freshwater fish? In his multi-storey carp ark.

OLDER PEOPLE THE SILVER LINE VISITING GPS DUE TO HELPLINE FOR OLDER LONELINESS PEOPLES Loneliness is a common problem among older people - and it appears many are turning to their doctor for help. New research suggests that thousands of individuals over the age of 65 are visiting their GP each year because they are lonely. A survey carried out for the Campaign to End Loneliness reveals that up to 10 patients a day visit their local surgery looking for answers. But 49% of the doctors questioned admitted they were not confident they had the tools necessary to help their lonely patients, with only 13% thinking they could really help. ‘Far too many people are feeling so lonely’ 3 million people aged over 65 suffer from loneliness in the UK. Kate Jopling, director of the Campaign to End Loneliness, is calling for urgent action to tackle the growing problem. ‘Far too many people are feeling so lonely - and are so at a loss about what to do about it - that they end up going to see their doctor,’ she said. ‘It’s time we committed to a more co-ordinated public health response that targets resources towards better support for lonely people, and prevention of loneliness for those at risk. ‘I know that many doctors will feel frustrated at not being able to help their patients but there are things they can do. ‘There are many schemes, both public and voluntary, that can help lonely older people and the first step for doctors should be to signpost these to patients.’ We need ‘a more co-ordinated public health response’ The campaigners claim that loneliness and isolation are associated with poor mental, physical and emotional health, including increased rates of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cognitive decline and dementia. They also state that isolated and lonely adults are more likely to be admitted into residential or nursing care much earlier. As the issue of loneliness escalates nationwide, local authorities are being urged to do their bit by helping better track and support lonely older people and increase awareness of loneliness as a public health issue. Loneliness associated with poor physical and emotional health Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director of Age UK says: ‘New measures that help ensure older people receive healthcare that meets their individual needs are long overdue. ‘Steps that lead to people receiving better quality and more joined up healthcare are to be welcomed. ‘In practice we know this means making sure every older person has access to high quality integrated healthcare that provides holistic support and also treats them with dignity. ‘Many older people living with frailty will value the availability of home visits, face to face appointments and accessible surgeries, as well as knowing their care should be more joined up.‘We very much look forward to hearing more detail of what today’s announcement will mean in practice.’ Combating loneliness Older people can get in touch with their local Age UK to see how the Charity can help through a range of services such as befriending, which might include home visits and telephone calls for people who are feeling lonely or isolated. Many local Age UKs also offer other social activities such as lunch clubs and day centre activities including exercise classes, coffee mornings, as well as volunteering opportunities. If anyone is worried about an older person this winter call Age UK Advice on 0800 169 65 65. Lines are open from 8am to 7pm, seven days a week.

€5M MAYORS CHALLENGE – CAN YOU BE PART OF THE SOLUTION?
Sheffield has been invited to take part in the Mayors Challenge, an innovation competition with a €5m prize and four €1m runner up prizes. We know that there are people with great ideas across the city, we are asking people and organisations across Sheffield, including you, to put forward their solutions to six of the big challenges facing Sheffield today: • How can Sheffield reduce social isolation through having better connected communities? • How can we create an affordable and sustainable energy supply for Sheffield? • How can we improve air quality in busy urban areas to protect human health and the environment? • How can we support people be physically active and lead healthier lives? • How can we give children and young people the information, advice and guidance they need to start their careers in the right direction? • How could we increase innovation and collaboration in Sheffield? How does it work? Solutions need to be submitted online at www. sheffieldcollab.net and will be shortlisted in line with the criteria on the website. Then, on the 11th January we will bring 5 shortlisted idea owners together with people who understand the problems we’re looking at and people who are experienced in developing products and services and turning ideas into reality, and take the solutions on a one day journey from idea to implementation plan. Timescales are very tight –we need to submit our entry to the competition by the end of January – so we’re asking for your solutions by 10th December, and we’ll let you know whether you’ve made it to the shortlist by 19th December. What do we need from you? We’re asking for your ideas, and as much evidence as you want to provide to support them, but at this stage you don’t need to outline how you would deliver it, your organisation’s credentials or any of the formal stuff you need to go through for a commissioning process – we’re all about the ideas. If your idea is shortlisted, you or someone else needs to attend the event on 11th January, so please pencil it into your diary. How can you get involved? If you’re interested, please go to www. sheffieldcollab.net for more information. If you know someone else who might be interested, please forward this onto them. transfer the licence into your name and convert it into an over 75 Licence. Traditional Family Christmas Atmosphere
THE SPORTSMAN IS OFF TO A FLYING START Following a £300,000 refurbishment in November the new team at The Sportsman at Norton Lees, Sheffield are delighted at the reaction, both from the local community and further afield. Landlord Craig Fenwick says “We’d like to say a big thank you to the neighbours for bearing with us while the builders have been on site, and we’re looking forward to seeing you this Christmas.” The Sportsman team put the community at the heart of their efforts and, in addition to making the pub the home of both Sporting Sheffield FC and Sheffield Sportsman FC, they have introduced a pool team and a poker team. Christmas is now uppermost in everyone’s mind and a festive, family atmosphere is already in evidence, with a three-course Christmas menu available in addition to the menu introduced last month, which is proving a great hit with children as well as adults. Five drinks – Fosters, Carling, Tetleys, John Smith and the new Carling Cider are all on
offer at just £2.50 between Mondays and Thursdays with glasses of wine for the ladies at only 95p. The Sportsman also features one of the best Sky and BT Sports packages, with several large TV’s throughout the pub, so you can watch your favourite teams while enjoying your drinks or meals. With live music every Saturday, a state of the art pool table and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere you and the entire family will really enjoy The Sportsman Experience this Christmas season. JOIN THE #NOTDRIVING CHRISTMAS PUB CRAWL South Yorkshire’s green travel campaign #NOTDRIVING returns this winter with a series of festive fun and games including a Christmas themed Pub Crawl in association with Thornbridge Brewery. On Wednesday 11 December, #NOTDRIVING will take to the streets of Sheffield as it embarks on a Festive Pub Crawl taking in Thornbridge venues Hallamshire House, Dada, The Bath Hotel, The Greystones, Graze Inn and The Stag. With the help from hot local bands Screaming Maldini and The Hosts plus one very special guest, #NOTDRIVING will demonstrate how to get around town this Christmas without driving. Instead it will hit the pavements and ride the bus together with
Christmas carols, mince pies, Christmas fancy dress and a sexy Mrs Santa to lead the troupes. To win a place on the pub crawl for you and a mate where you’ll be rubbing shoulders with some of Sheffield’s coolest home grown talent, head to www.notdriving. co.uk and enter the number of miles for any journey you make where you don’t drive. You don’t even have to own a car, you just have to travel by any means of transport that isn’t a car. If you’re not lucky enough to win, fear not
as the general public are encouraged to look out for the #NOTDRIVING crew on the night of 11 December to join in the route and the festivities. In celebration of its partnership with Thornbridge who are backing the campaign for its more serious message of leaving the car at home when out drinking, a Winter Warmer #NOTDRIVING ale has been brewed. The ale, which has been given a rather festive name of ‘Myrissty’, has been brewed with winter spices including nutmeg. It
will be available in all Thornbridge venues across the city from 2 December, so expect plenty of Myrissty served up on the Pub Crawl. There will be much more activity from #NOTDRIVING this winter as it steps up its presence to promote its anti-drink driving campaign. It will also launch a mega Christmas giveaway where it’ll be giving away hundreds of pounds worth of prizes in return for local residents changing their travelling and pledging their not-driven miles. Keep an eye open for it this winter.

FOOTPRINTS ACCOUNTANCY GATHERS GIFTS WITH CASH FOR KIDS There can’t be many more stunning locations for South Eastern Sheffield and North Derbyshire residents to drop off a gift for an underprivileged child, than the stately stables where expanding Footprints Accountancy are based at Renishaw Hall on the outskirts of Sheffield. Julie Robinson simultaneously hit 40, had a baby (Charley Rae, now 2) and set up Footprints Accountancy three years ago because she had been disappointed with the traditional way that many businesses deal with their accounts- an annual hassle followed by tax and accountants bills. “Our bespoke service includes financial mentoring throughout the year, building skills in the manager or team and helping the business become more profitable” says Julie. I was contacted on Linked In by the new manager of Cash for Kids, Louise Davies and was
immediately compelled to help. As a mum of two, I can’t imagine what it feels like to be unable to give your child even a single gift on Christmas morning. We love Christmas and it’s all about the children, so we immediately offered to collect gifts among our own growing team of staff and act as a collection point for this side of Sheffield. We are emailing every single one of our 200 clients, spreading the word at all our networking events like Forward Ladies, to our friends and contacts and on social media. The UK might be fighting its way out of a long recession, but we’ll do our best to play our small part. The Mission Christmas campaign is the jewel in the Cash for Kids crown and concentrates on listeners donating a gift or cash for a local child aged 0-18 who would otherwise go without at Christmas. Local Social Services and other agencies identify the children most at need, many of whom are in care homes and refuges. Although all children remain anonymous, many letters of thanks are received postChristmas from homes and Social Services. Julie’s past experience spans being a bank manager to company finance and operations director, managing areas from human resources to health and safety. Such has been the success of her business development service,

she is now financial director of other award winning local entrepreneurial businesses such as Geco Industries, a sought after national conference speaker and coach to young entrepreneurs through Sheffield Hallam’s Enterprise Hatchery. Julie also runs bespoke courses for large

Nestled amongst breathtaking moorland scenery, it is a local landmark within the Peak District National Park, yet only 20 minutes drive from Sheffield centre.
The menu includes firm favourites: - the pies are particularly popular, and visitors never fail to be impressed as to how giant the giant Yorkshire Puddings actually are! There is a generous choice of vegetarian dishes, and for children we have a special menu with the same quality foods in smaller quantities to promote healthy eating.
Over the centuries The Strines Inn has gained and maintained a well-deserved reputation for good quality traditional English home made food, much of which is made on the premises and cooked to order.
At the bar is a Specials Board that is updated daily providing the latest choices of soups, pies, fresh fish and desserts as well as the current one-off dishes.
VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Radio Nightingale broadcasts round the clock to provide entertainment for the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. An admission to hospital can be a disorientating and isolating experience as every day is the same and time becomes elongated as normal routines are broken. With the comfort provided by Radio Nightingale many patients report being better able to relax and take the rest they need to support their recovery. Radio Nightingale is run by volunteers and the whole cost of running the station must be covered by fundraising activities to keep the service on the air to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. It’s support from the public that keeps the station going not only financially but also in appreciation. It’s not very often that people take the time to write or ring in to tell us how they’ve found Radio Nightingale, so it’s always very pleasing to hear from listeners who do spare that few moments. Feedback from the patients listening to Radio Nightingale is really important to help us develop our schedule to provide the right kind of programmes at the right times. So if you have any comments on the programmes you’ve heard on Radio Nightingale, please do get in touch. You can write, phone or email. Or like us on Facebook at facebook.com/radionightingale. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. MAGIC’S MISSION IS BACK MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
At this time of year we always hear about Christmas preparations, what’s in the shops, what’s selling well and how we plan to spend the festive season. It seems as if it is the only topic of conversation. Then of course there are the ads on the telly and the music playing in the stores and the goodies on the shelves. Let’s not forget that it isn’t necessarily a happy time, and for some families it is something they even dread. Once again this year we’re asking you to spare a thought for the many thousands of children and young people in South Yorkshire particularly who won’t get to share in the excitement and good fortune we might have been used to when we were youngsters ourselves. Magic’s Mission Christmas with Foresters is back, and you can do such a great deal to help re-address the balance by simply buying one extra gift, not matter how big or small, and donating it either here at Magic AM on Herries Road, Sheffield, or at one of the many drop off points around the area. You can see a full list at magicam. co.uk Our charity Cash for Kids will gather together all donations and distribute them to families in need, and the many organisations which looks after needy children in this area ahead of the big day. You can give cash as well by calling the team on 0114 209 1100, or just keep listening to find out more. Help our mission to make it a happier Christmas for all children in 2013.
SEEKING GLITZ, GLAMOUR AND FAME CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Clubs are not usually associated with glitz and glamour- often just the opposite in fact. This is a mistaken view however as many clubs, particularly in the 1960s and 70s became quite glamorous places after expensive refurbishments. They may now have lost some of the glitter but it’s worth remembering those days. It was not only the décor that was glitzy but some of the activities that took place and some of the members, particularly some of the ladies. Getting dressed up for a Saturday night at the club became the thing to do. Beauty competitions, now frowned upon as not politically correct, were also popular in that period with clubs holding their own contests and a major inter-club one, organised by the CIU. Winners could go on to compete at regional level and successful contestants went to the national finals usually held in Blackpool. There used to be plenty of entrants as they offered a welcome break from the usual routine. Successful contestants won money, holidays and local, even national fame. Additionally, the winner would receive a tiara, to be held for one year. All contestants received a silver ingot, suitably engraved with silver chain. Escaping from the factory floor or typing pool was a strong motivation for some entrants whilst others just wanted to be centre of attention for a night. The CIU’s National Queen of Clubs Contest was inaugurated in 1978 and was held on the evening after the AGM in Blackpool. Each of the branches were invited to submit entries. Just as millions tuned into the Miss World competition on television, so they went to see local ones at their clubs. In June 1970, Coventry’s Tile Hill Club’s large concert room was packed when the CIU Warwickshire Branch held its Queen of Clubs competition. Jimmy Cooke, long-term CIU National Executive member, saw Beauty Queen contests ‘spreading throughout Clubs in the country which does help in making the ladies more interested in Club life.’ Older women could enter the ‘glamorous grandmother’ competitions. These contests were also popular in holiday camps such as Butlins and were which were tried and tested holiday destinations before cheap packages whisked club goers off to foreign climes. By the mid-1980s, the glamorous grannies and beauty queens were falling off with the question asked, ‘Where have all the flowers gone?’ The South Yorkshire Branch Queen of Clubs competition had less than a dozen entries received from all the clubs in area.

Vans Warped Tour Alexandra Palace 16-17/11/13
PREVIEW
Words by KT Evans
We’ve kept it in our diaries for months, been proud of our ticket for weeks and planned this infamous weekend down to a T (that’s totally normal right?) but 16 – 17th November finally saw the entry of Vans Warped Tour, UK leg. Spread out over three room, with a bloody massive skate ramp thrown in there for good measure, kicking things off on the Jager stage were pop punk princes Neck Deep. Forever up on their feet, never once remaining static as though they seriously were having one heck of a time, the group’s newest single “Crushing Greif” served as a starter for what was set to be a feast of a weekend. With each separate room differing in both size, atmosphere and audience, the Kevin Says Stage may well have been the smallest of all the platforms, however with a capacity of around 350, the most intimate showcasing’s were to be found in this hidden underground venue. Our favourite quote of the first day goes to a lovely mature older lady who declared “…I feel like I can dance down in this room. The bands aren’t swearing for a change…” which although tickled us to the point where we had to take a seat for a strong five minutes, did pretty much sum up what Warped Tour was going for this year…versatility. Although not typically a ‘Vans Warped Tour’ performer, Sheffield’s Alvarez Kings took to their challenge like masters of alternative rock. Season festival performers We Are Fiction made us all now seriously consider the thought of treating ourselves to a hand tattoo whilst Surrey’s Canterbury emphasised that a vocal scream isn’t a total necessity to be signed onto the Vans Warped Tour Roster. As is with any all-day festival, we get a tad hungry…and by that, we mean it’s only necessary to inhale as much food as physically possible. From Dominos Pizza to London Street Food, if we had wanted to gain an additional two stone (and we’re not kidding with you here, chances are we probably did) then Warped food court lived up to the mantra that variety really is the spice of life. We’ll stand in full admiration to the gentleman in front of us who ordered four bags of chips for himself, the perfect mosh fuel for some devilish headliners still prowling in the wings. Girls – if you’re anything like us, you will know exactly what we mean when we say how pleased we all were when Winston and co of Parkway Drive declared their headline spot at this year’s Vans Warped Tour…Boys – take note of the tan and teeth…enough said. Emerging onto the main stage with so much pent-up energy we could easily make a comparison to a caged circus tiger here, the Australian hardcore clan filled Alexandria Palace like it was their nan’s front room. The band never fail to drive their sound into the hearts and minds of each and every spectator who watches their pitch perfect set, ensuring all who witness feel like they have just been shown the most exclusive showcasing of their live music experience. Failing not to obtain the biggest circle pit of the day…bring on round
FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES CHARITY WINDFALL Our friends at Kendal Calling are proud to announce that the 2013 festival has raised a whooping £19798.26 for a variety of north- west charities. Kendal Calling would like to offer massive thank to everyone who helped to raise this phenomenal amount of money for some fantastic charities. Kendal Calling Festival Director commented “We’d like to say a HUGE thank-you to all festival-goers for helping to raise this charity money. The chosen charities are all very important to the festival team for personal reasons so it really does mean a lot to us. We hope to smash this amount next year and raise even more! We are busy planning for next year’s festival and can’t wait to be back in the fields!” Friends of the festival Hospice at Home raised £3748.26 by selling their sunflowers around the festival site and even Seasick Steve bought one to wear! Tim Peaks yet again raised funds for the David Lynch foundation and our World Record breaking helped raise £1000 for Help For Heroes. The rest of the charities are personal to the Kendal Calling team and they are delighted to be able to help raise money on their behalf. Guide Dogs for the Blind - £2500 North West Air Ambulance - £2500 Alder Hey Children’s Hospital charity - £2550 Lancaster Hospital - £2550 Penrith Lions - £2450

two… To Sunday…although we’d now speculate at maybe 70% as an estimate to how many people were feeling like balls after a Jager fuelled party the night before, this didn’t damped the spirits for arguably the strongest day of Vans Warped Tour 2013. Armed now with a beer in hand, pizza filled belly and a supply of Anadin Extra on tap, we were now ready to kick the shit out of day two. It’s pretty fair to say that there’s a very small sample of bands who could be granted legendary hardcore status…infamous New Yorker’s and backbone of the current scene we know today, Hatebreed are one of these. Although a surprisingly early slot on the main stage could have thrown their balance of their day off, it seemed not to affect either the enthusiasm of performing to over 5000 people or the way in which they delivered on each and every hit they spurted out. However, following on from these, Yorkshire’s While She Sleeps may very well be in contention for the performance of the entire weekend… Seizing the West Stage in the most beautiful set-up we guarantee you are ever going to see a set of tattooed, pierced men scream in again, if you’ve ever had the chance to see the five piece live, you’ll share our thoughts with us when we say…incredible. Opening up with the title track off their smasher of a debut album “This Is The Six,” While She Sleeps thrust us all into the deepest darkest pits of hardcore heaven. Other hits “Seven Hills,” “The North Stands For Nothing” and “Our Courage Our Cancer” followed perfectly in suit, a tip of the hat not only to their Northern roots, but also a repertoire of emotionally driven, enormous sounding belters. The great thing about any festival you attend is the little hidden gems the organisers release throughout the weekend. Four words…A Day To Remember. Not on the line-up sheet or leaked onto any kind of music scene website, the Jagermesiter stage had a brand new set of visitors at 5pm in the afternoon. Their performance included a live debut of “City Of Ocala,” an exclusive track from their stonkingly good new album “Common Courtesy,” along with “All Signs Point To Lauderdale,” planting A Day To Remember right back as one of the most celebrated pop punk bands around. We’re not entirely sure why the set of girls in front of us were crying…maybe they were just hormonal…boys, don’t ask. Although we may not have heard from them for a year or two, headliners of the main stage Rise Against always hit the jackpot with both sourcing the very best crowd reaction aswell as delivering their trade mark live sound. With a brand new album set for release in 2014, we weren’t given any little sneaky sound-bites from their most recent recording, however their classic hit “Saviour” reminded us all why the Chicago based pop punk legends are at the very top of their game. Having consumed our body weight in the fastest of fast food, drunk enough Monster to give us palpitations for about three weeks and had the opportunity to see some of hardcore’s most infamous live bands, if there’s one event which has brightened up our winter months…ladies and gentlemen…the winner is…Vans Warped Tour. Check out www.vanswarpedtouruk.com for pictures, interviews and all the latest announcements from the Vans Camp. Hospice at Home – 3748.26 David Lynch Foundation - £2500 Help the Heroes - £1000 Total raised: £19,798.26 This total means over the last 4 years £55298.26 has been raised for various charities so a huge thank you once again to everyone who has helped Kendal Calling achieve this. Kendal Calling 2014 will take place between 1st -3rd August and tickets are on-sale now at £115. The festival has introduced a monthly payment ticket plan for 2014 helping festival goers budget and these tickets can be snapped up for just £14.36 a month based on 9 monthly payments. Set in the stunning Lake District, Kendal Calling is widely regarded as one of the best festivals in the UK and acts that have performed previously include: Mumford & Sons, Dizzee Rascal, Primal Scream, Public Enemy, Blondie, Calvin Harris, Frank Turner, Doves, Alt-J, James, Seasick Steve, House of Pain, The Levellers, The Streets, The Cribs, Basement Jaxx, Chase & Status, Noah & The Whale The 2014 line up will be announced early in the New Year.

CAST UNVEILED FOR COOL CHRISTMAS SHOW Some of the cast of iceSheffield’s Christmas Show 2013.A cast of aspirating young skaters from across South Yorkshire has been unveiled ahead of the opening night of region’s coolest Christmas Show. Talented young figure skaters from Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield make up the 120-strong cast for the festive ice skating spectacular - I’ll be home for Christmas. Taking place at iceSheffield from December 5 to December 7, the show has been choreographed by former British Champion David Hartley. The show will take audiences on a trip around the globe, experiencing adventure and culture on the way as the cast race against time to be home for Christmas. David, a coach at iceSheffield and Director of Development for the National Ice Skating Association (NISA), said: “The show is a fantastic opportunity for our young skaters who are based at iceSheffield to experience what it’s like to perform live in front of an audience as part of their development pathway. “It’s an annual event which seems to get bigger, better and more popular with families each year. It’s a really special time of year and the Christmas Show is a great way to kick off the festive season.” Tickets for the event are available online at www.icesheffield.com.

angler’s corner

Well, my run of blanks is finally over with a string of quality roach and bream at Cudmore Fisheries in Staffordshire.....so that’s a relief! Whilst fishing, I got into conversation with the Fishery Manager Vic who mentioned that a pool was due to be netted and electro fished the following day; as I’ve never had chance to witness such an evolution, I asked if I could go along to watch.... The next day saw me huddled before an onslaught of foul weather, sleet, snow and whatever else came from the heavens whilst I tried desperately to keep the camera gear dry. Already in the water, two hardy souls named Craig and Rob from the netting company were pulling on over two hundred and sixty metres of nets which had been skilfully placed to ensure maximum coverage. I asked how much the net actually weighed and was informed that the two lads were tugging almost three tonnes of weight; that was without taking into account the mass of fish expected! Islands, snags and other features all have to be negotiated, so the supposedly simple task has it’s complications. Once the net had been laid and the two ends brought together, then the laborious task of retrieving it could be started; to make things easier, the boat was deployed to electro fish at the back of the net to drive fish forward towards the waiting holding tanks. Electro fishing is not an exact science despite the obvious advantages it brings to fishery owners. Craig explained to me that Ohm’s law is a vital calculation which denotes exactly how much current and voltage should be used and is dependent on a number of factors. Depth and temperature of the water, ph values and size of intended targets have to be considered; on average, I was told that five amps and two hundred and fifty volts is passed through the water, but it can be up to eighty amps! Some fish types are more susceptible to electric current than others, so extreme care must be taken not to damage smaller fish; it’s a finely balanced juggling act which only skilled professionals can do properly. The anticipation was palpable as the net came closer to the bank; clouds of mud indicated lots of fish, and scattering shoals of roach marked rampant catfish taking cheeky advantage of easily caught prey! Finally, the heaving mass was close enough to reach in and begin grading or returning stock; within just one lake, I was fortunate enough to witness eight catfish over 50lbs, one indeed was over 61lbs, numerous impressive (and unexpected!) perch, quality

bream and roach which were rarely fished for, odd barbel, plenty of chub and carp to around 20lbs were all present and pleasingly, in extremely good health. A couple of hours of back breaking toil by ten staff, and all the fish were checked and returned to fight another day...... Netting is just one part of fishery management, and I was very pleased to be given the opportunity to find out a little more about it, so my thanks to Vic and the staff at Cudmore Fisheries. www.cudmorefisheries.co.uk

By the end of November the jumps season is well under way and one of the more fascinating chases takes place at Newbury with the running of the prestigious Hennessy Gold Cup – a Grade 3 handicap which, over the years, has been won by some top class horses, including recent Cheltenham Gold cup winners Denman and Bobs Worth. The roll of honour for this race reads like a Who’s Who of the very best steeplechasers of the day. This year is likely to prove no exception and the entries contain numerous exciting young chasers who may have the potential to emulate Denman and Bobs Worth. The Newbury meeting is a very attractive one and the four races from that venue are supported on Channel 4 by a couple of races from Newcastle where the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle is the top race.
2.25 Bet365 Long Distance Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 3m 110yds: For the past four years, ever since he fell in the Hennessy of 2008, this has been a benefit contest for Big Bucks as he opened each season with a win here. However this year there will be a different winner with Big Bucks sidelined. At Fishers Cross will be a tough nut to crack at this distance but the one that comes out on top for me is Battle Group, who I think can win. Despite the presence of At Fishers Cross the selection may have most to fear from Medinas who ran Tidal Bay close at Wetherby recently. After this trio the next best may be Ballyalton who looks a little unexposed to me and may be able to improve for the extra distance. 3.00 Hennessy Gold Cup Chase (Handicap), Grade 3, 4yo+, 3m 2f 110yds: You will no doubt recall that I put up Cloudy Too as an each way suggestion for last week’s Betfair Chase only for him to be withdrawn from that encounter. Well Sue Smith sets me a poser here by having entered him here and for the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle (2.40). He should be followed wherever he goes but he is my suggestion as the most likely winner if he runs here.

Newbury: 1.50 Bet365 Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 0-150, 2m 3f: Currently there 30 entries for this of which 18 recorded speed figures last time out. The one that comes out on top for me is Philip Hobbs’ Horizontal Speed who just couldn’t quite get to David Pipe’s Waterunder in a fast-run handicap at Exeter a couple of weeks ago. That was a very meritorious effort and earns the vote here. Next best may be Nicky Henderson’s River Maigue whose eighth place in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at this year’s Cheltenham Festival was another cracking effort. That race was also run in a fast time and is one to follow for future winners in my opinion. Mischievous Milly, Dildar, Gibb River and Don’t Be Late come next in my ratings in that order, followed fairly closely by Drive Time, Makari, Master of the Game, Gassin Golf and Fergall.

His last performance at Carlisle marked him out as a young chaser of enormous potential in my view. That having been said he has several opponents here who also appear to have notable potential, namely: Hadrian’s Approach; Highland Lodge; Theatre Guide; On His Own; Houblon Des Obeaux; Invictus (beat Bobs Worth fair and square in the Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot last year but has a long absence to overcome); Triolo D’Alene; Merry King; Katenko; and Lord Windermere. The majority of these are six and seven year olds and are at the outset of what could be very interesting careers indeed. Previous Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander is also in the field, and deserves a mention for that fact alone, but is probably out of his depth against these youngsters now, a remark that could also apply to top weight Cape Tribulation and Prince de Beauchene. If Cloudy Too doesn’t run Hadrian’s Approach becomes the selection. 3.35 Bet365 Handicap Chase (for the Jim Joel Memorial Trophy), 4yo+, 0-145, 2m 1f: Richard Lee’s Grey Gold finished 12 lengths third behind Cloudy Too at Carlisle but that performance is strong enough in my view to earn him the selection here. That was his first run of the season and he should improve for that race. Hazy Tom finished 34 lengths further back that day, having led at a fast pace to 5 out, and merits the first reserve position for me. Filbert is my next best followed by the improving youngster Next Sensation who is still unexposed and looks a dangerous opponent. The remaining reserve order is: Lancetto; Ulck Du Lin; Cantlow; Valco De Touzaine; Anay Turge; and Elenika. Newcastle: 2.05 StanJames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle, Grade 1, 4yo+, 2m: Jeremy Scott appears to me to be bringing Melodic Rendezvous along very carefully. This progressive individual has been very well campaigned to date and already has a Grade 1 race in his trophy cabinet. I think he may well add another with this race and he looks to me to be the one they all have to beat. From his fourth place behind the selection last time out my first reserve is Cotton Mill, followed next by: Stormy Weather; Cockney Sparrow; Prima Porta; Grumeti; My Tent or Yours; and Ifandbutwhynot. 2.40 At The Races Rehearsal Chase (Handicap), Listed, 4yo+, 3m: Were he to run here Cloudy Too would be the selection. However, with an entry in the Hennessy at Newbury he may well go there. If so the first reserve Mister Marker becomes the selection following an excellent performance behind Global Power on heavy ground at Carlisle over 3m 2f last time. That day he was trying to give the winner 11lbs and the burden of top weight of 11st 12lbs proved just too much over that distance and ground. If others stand their ground for this he shouldn’t have such a welter burden and over this slightly shorter trip could prevail. Selection Summary (see above for reserves in the event of non runners): Newbury: 1.50 Horizontal Speed 2.25 Battle Group 3.00 Cloudy Too, if absent Hadrian’s Approach 3.35 Grey Gold Newcastle: 2.05 Melodic Rendezvous 2.40 Cloudy Too, if absent Mister Marker Good Luck!

Last week’s results: After non runners were discounted the final runners and outcomes (leading to a 4.2 point profit to one point level stakes) were: Ascot: 2.05 Al Ferof – won @ 1/5 2.40 Magnifique Etoile – Fell (10/1) 3.15 Alasi – won @ 5/1 Haydock: 1.50 More of That – won @ 3/1 2.25 Utopie Des Bordes – 2nd @ 14/1 3.00 Bobs Worth (win) – 6th @ 15/8 and Cloudy Too (e/w) – non runner 3.35 Quincy Des Pictons – unseated rider (25/1) Cue Card’s win in the Betfair Chase was a much improved effort over this longer distance, a fact confirmed by the clock in my estimation. He could now be interesting for the Cheltenham Gold Cup having proved his liking for this sort of stamina test.

WE GOT WHAT WE DESERVED Man of the match Mark Duffy spoke to Rovers Player after his goal was the match winner against Yeovil Town. He spoke of his delight to get all there points; “It’s a massive win for us! The gaffer before the game let us know that is was a big game and we went into it hoping to get three points and thats what we have done in the end. “The first fifteen minutes I thought we played really well, we played probably our best football all year but after the goal we sat back, they then come back into the game and we conceded another sloppy goal but when we went down to ten men I thought we need to hold on for the point but thankfully we got all three points. Mark was awarded the ‘Man of the match’ award and reflected on his personal performance adding: “I am pleased with my performance, its the points that we needed really so I would have been happy to play poorly and get the result. I am pretty pleased with my performance though.”

FANTASTIC RESULT BOSS RUES
Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his side beat Gary Johnson’s Yeovil Town at the Keepmoat Stadium on Friday night. Dickov said; “It’s a fantastic result, I felt we started the game really well, the way we planned during the week. We switched the play well and had two vs one situations out wide quite lot and the goal came from that which is pleasing. “At one-nil I though we could have got another couple of goals here. I don’t know if it was the delay in the game Mcallister went down injured but we seemed to lose our momentum and tempo in our game. “The second half I think the player really rolled up their sleeves and dug in. The players deserve a lot of credit because going down to ten men at one all we could have sat back and taken a point, so to go on a take the three points it is credit to them”.

Millers boss Steve Evans was left ruing missed chances after his side had to settle for a goalless draw against Carlisle United at New York Stadium. The hosts dominated the game, in which Carlisle’s Conor Townsend was dismissed on the stroke of half-time for a second bookable offence, but were unable to capitalise on the numerous chances they created: “It was very frustrating,” said Evans. “If you look at the stats we’ve had 18 efforts at goal, obviously it was different in the second half against ten men and we’ve got the ball in the box but we’ve lacked a bit of quality in the final third. “I remember looking once or twice when we’ve they’ve scraped things off the line and had ricochets go in their favour but we’ve got to be better than that.” However, Evans did reserve special praise for the Cumbrians’ industry that helped ensure they returned north with a share of the spoils: “At the end of the day when you go in at 0-0 and you’re down to ten men you’re going to defend and they deserve enormous credit because

they’ve given their manager all they’ve got. They put their bodies on the line and they’ve scrapped and they’ve scraped and kicked balls off the line and when you see that you think we’ll take the point and move onto Coventry.” The Millers boss did take time to praise the work rate of his team despite the fact they were unable to convert their chances: “It’s an opportunity missed, but every game we play and don’t pick up maximum points from we consider it an opportunity missed. The effort and the commitment and the passion was up there. Today compared to last week we lacked that quality in the final third, but we had that against Bradford and we had it again Stevenage. We didn’t play with any zip in the final third and if you don’t score goals, but saying that we’ve had four or five good chances. “We’ve dominated from start to finish in terms of statistics and possession but we’ve just lacked the quality in the final third.”

Those seven goals were enough to give Treeton a +2 better goal difference than Swallownest’s, giving them top spot on a superior goal differential. North Gawber Colliery U21 maintained their unbeaten start to the season, with a 5-2 win over Millmoor Juniors U21 at Grange Park. North Gawber remain third, only a point shy of the lead. Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21 bounced back from last weeks’ defeat to Treeton Terriers U21, with a 3-1 home win over Davy FC U21. Their win keeps them in the leading pack, in fourth place, only two points behind Treeton. Houghton Main U21 made it three games unbeaten in the league, as they beat bottom side Swinton Athletic U21 4-1 at Swinton Miners Welfare.
Division One Alex Rippon scored twice to help league leaders High Noon to a 6-1 win over Penistone Church at Davy Sports Club. High Noon have scored 41 goals in their eight league games this season. Hurlfield remain two points off High Noon’s lead, following a 5-3 win over City Taxis at HSBC Sports Club Nathan Edwards scored a hat-trick for Concord, as they beat Intake Ball Inn 7-2 at Meadowhall Soccer School. Concord’s win ends a three game winless league run, and climb into fourth placed in the table.
Meadowhall League Premier Division Despite goals from Bradley Torr and James Middleton, Rawson Spring were held to a 2-2 draw at Frecheville Sports Club by Arundel. The draw ends a run of five successive victories by Rawson, who remain top-ofthe-league. Second placed Royal Earl were beaten 3-1 at home
Division Two Bystrany Sheffield built on last weeks’ win over Wadsley, with a 7-2 home win over Ridgeway Athletic. The loss is Ridgeway’s first of the season, but they remain top-of-the-league. Brandon Wilde was the hero for SWD as they beat second placed Woodhouse JFC 4-2 at Olive Grove. Wilde was in fine form, scoring a hat-trick. U21 Division Sheffield United Juniors Blades U21 extended their lead at the top of the U21 Division to 14 points, as they beat Swallownest U21 13-0 at East End Park. Andrew Gibbons starred for the Blades, with four goals to his name. Abbey Lane U21 extended their unbeaten run to four league games, with a 4-1 home win over Brampton Dynamos U21.

BLADES RECORD FIRST AWAY VICTORY MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
United recorded a first away league victory of the season at Bristol City on Saturday. In front of 914 travelling Unitedites, Aden Flint’s own goal, turning in Tony McMahon’s cross, was the difference between the sides. The goal helped the Blades leapfrog over Bristol City in the table and ended a five-match unbeaten run from Sean O’Driscoll’s Robins. Clough made three changes for the trip to Bristol. Midfielders McGinn and Coady, as well as forward Taylor, were recalled - Hill, Flynn and Miller all dropped to the bench. Wearing all yellow, United’s defensive units made a solid start with little in terms of attacking intent visible in the opening 15 minutes. Maguire headed over a Lappin free-kick and the Blades defender picked up the game’s booking, a heavy touch resulting in him ploughing into Cunningham. Emmanuel-Thomas fired over a setpiece before both goalkeepers were forced into action from free-kicks within four minutes. Firstly, Long drifted across his line to hold Shorey’s curler and then, after a foul on Lappin, McMahon beat the wall but Parish
dropped to his right to make a save. Long was called upon again on 37 minutes to keep out the best opportunity of the period. Wagstaff pushed the ball down the left channel where Baldock had beaten the offside trap but his shot was blocked by the legs of the Blades goalkeeper, who was quickly off his line to cut down the angle. The final noteworthy point of an unspectacular first half was a yellow card for Coady, who, like Maguire before him, fouled Cunningham. The first three opportunities of the second half fell to the Blades as the home crowd began to voice their displeasure. From a break, Coady fired wide, despite being unopposed, then Taylor had two efforts, he blasted wide and then hit the second straight at goalkeeper Parish. Just after the hour, Baxter took over from Taylor but City hit back with two chances inside a minute. From an Emmanuel-Thomas free-kick, Porter did enough to prevent Elliott getting a clean header at goal and from the resulting corner, after a penalty appeal, Baldock fired over. It was the Blades, however, who made the vital and decisive breakthrough on 77 minutes. A patient build-up on the right, involving Coady, McGinn and Porter, resulted in McMahon wriggling
free and delivering a low cross which flashed off defender FLINT and into his own net. City’s response was to introduce a couple of attacking-minded players, whilst the Blades threw on Bristolian Hill in place of Lappin to add defensive solidarity. With two minutes left an Emmanuel-Thomas corner was bundled into the net in a crowded penalty area but referee Stroud awarded the visitors a free-kick after Long was blocked off. Four minutes of added time was welcomed by the home side and a long thrown from Emmanuel-Thomas saw Osborne fire over, whilst the last action was a long-range free-kick which saw the Blades wall race out to block an Emmanuel-Thomas free-kick. City: Parish, Moloney (Harewood 82), Flint, Baldock, Emmanuel-Thomas, Wagstaff, Cunningham (McLaughlin 78), Pack, Shorey (Williams 66), Elliott, Osborne. Unused: Fielding, R. Taylor, Brundle, Gillett. Blades: Long, White, Maguire, Doyle, Porter, L. Taylor (Baxter 62), McGinn, Collins, Coady, Lappin (Hill 85), McMahon. Unused: Howard, Flynn, Miller, Cuvelier, King.
A GREAT AWAY WIN SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Nigel Clough was understandably delighted following the Blades crucial 1-0 win over Bristol City on Saturday. An Aden Flint own goal 12 minutes from time settled a tense contest in United’s favour at Ashton Gate, much to the joy of the Gaffer, his staff, the players and the excellent travelling support that followed the Blades to the West County. Clough remarked: “It was a tremendous day. A magnificent away win, the first of the season and you could see how much it meant to everyone at the end. “It was richly deserved and important for our loyal supporters who have travelled around the country all season hoping for this elusive win. “We are in the bottom four at the moment, so we have to scrap and fight for every point. After last week we had to get that message across to the players. We would like to play with more freedom and flare, but that will come. “I believe it is the first away win since the end of March, so it is certainly a relief and now we must look to kick on. Looking ahead, the manager added: “We now have an important home game on Tuesday before another very tough away fixture at Leyton Orient, but we have to build on this win and look to go on an unbeaten run. “We told the players not to give anything away. The lesson was learnt from last week and we emphasised that if Bristol City were to score they would have to work hard or produce something special. “Apart from a couple of soft free kicks around the box we didn’t give them a kick.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 WOEFUL OWLS LOSE OUT TO TERRIERS SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Goals either side of half time from Martin Paterson and Adam Clayton ensured maximum points for Huddersfield in the early Championship kick-off in S6. Connor Wickham pulled a late goal back at the last but it was too little too late, with the Owls creating little throughout a derby contest that Town deserved to win. And with both teams seeking a route away from the wrong end of the Championship table, there were changes all round at Hillsborough. For Wednesday, Dave Jones handed a maiden start to Arsenal loanee Damian Martinez, while Joe Mattock came in for Reda Johnson at left back. Miguel Llera was installed at the heart of the defence and for the visitors, talisman James Vaughan returning after suspension was one of six changes after the Terriers’ recent defeat to Birmingham. And it was Huddersfield that struck first blood on ten minutes. Clayton found space on the edge of the area and fed Paterson, who turned to drill firmly into the bottom corner – although there was a suspicion of offside. Nonetheless, that strike gave Town
the impetus, which they took on board and largely bossed the first half, safe in the knowledge of their advantage. The Owls saw plenty of possession but struggled to make a true impact moving forward and needed a boost after the break. Jermaine Johnson and Giles Coke came on for the resumption but it was Huddersfield that threatened first as Vaughan struck the outside of the post with a snapshot from close range. Wednesday grew into the game and Matty Fryatt was a whisker away from converting a Jermaine Johnson cross before the Jamaican international forced Alex Smithies into a flying save after escaping two defenders. But on 68 minutes, Town extended their lead against the run of play. A fizzing ball inside the penalty area found its way to the onrushing Clayton, who shot across Martinez and home. It was hard on Wednesday, who had asked more of the questions but without reward until Wickham’s late hit in added time. But for Town, it was a case of taking their chances and that they did in both halves to emerge with all three points. Owls: Martinez, Buxton, Roger Johnson, Llera, Mattock (Maghoma 74), Antonio (Jermaine Johnson 46), McPhail (Coke 46), Semedo, Helan, Fryatt, Wickham Huddersfield: Smithies, Dixon, Norwood, Hogg, Clayton (Gobern 90), Vaughan, Hammill, Paterson (Richards 89), Smith, Lynch, Gerrard
FLORO STAND UP OWLS CALLED AND BE FIXTURES 2013/14 COUNTED UP SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Owls youngster Rafael Floro has been called into the Portugese Under-20 international camp scheduled for the early throes of December. Left back Floro has shown steady progress in S6 since signing a one-year contract last summer. A Development Squad regular, Floro made his senior debut against Rotherham in the Carling Cup before starting in the Championship for the visit of Burnley. The 19-year-old has represented Portugal at Under-18 level as well as playing for the youth sides of Sporting Lisbon, Academica, Almansilense, Louletano DC and FC Porto.
LAVERY LOANED OUT SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday youngster Caolan Lavery has joined League 2 side Plymouth Argyle on an emergency loan. The striker will stay with Argyle until 1 January 2014. Lavery has impressed for the Owls’ Development Squad this season and moves to Home Park in a bid for first team experience. The Irishman’s switch south is his second on loan after he enjoyed a temporary move to Southend United last time out.
SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Dave Jones says that everyone in the dressing room must stick together and show more gumption if the Owls are to escape from the lower regions of the Championship. Wednesday went down 2-1 at home to Huddersfield on Saturday and the manager acceded to the fact the performance was lacking. But Jones insists himself, his staff and players will bounce back and get the season back on track. He said: “It was a poor performance. The frustrating thing is that we were so good against Reading last time here and then we go to that. “It’s up to everyone to turn this around, and that starts from the staff and through to all the players. We have all got to stand up and be counted. “The first goal might have been offside but it doesn’t matter because we didn’t do our jobs properly. “We have people in pockets there and someone came out, which gave them the chance to take advantage and they did that. “I know these players can play at Hillsborough because they did it so well in the last game. But is there a mental block sometimes? If there is, we have to unlock it.” Jones also explained his thinking in making four changes to the team that lost at Derby last time out. Joe Mattock, Jose Semedo, Miguel Llera and Damian Martinez all started against the Terriers– with the goalkeeper change proving the biggest talking point. He explained: “I made changes because we didn’t play well in the last game. No manager drops a player for playing well. “With Chris, we hadn’t kept a clean sheet and I don’t think he was playing to the standards he sets himself. “Damian came in and in all honesty didn’t have a lot to do and didn’t do anything wrong. “If I have to make changes all over then I will because we have to start winning games and that is the bottom line.”
