Copley’s Column Russ Dennett, guitar maestro, formerly with the Human League, has successfully held a weekly open mic night in and around Dronfield for many years and he has now found a new venue, the Yew Tree at Coal Aston, by far the most suitable, both in size and the fact that it has a stage. His first night was held last week and I was anxious to see if the change of venue had improved the night. I was pleasantly surprised to see a busy house, in view of the fact that it was the last Tuesday before the monthly salaried were paid and it was just four weeks before Christmas. It was nice to see he had the support of fellow Junkyard Dog members John Wynn and Anthony Lomas, together with other regular followers John Swift who is a great bass guitarist, drummers Tom Hudson and Ashley Thompson. There were also notable performances from Hannah Lily, Andy Birks and some excellent guitar playing and singing from Phil Bentley. Russ is outstanding, both as a musician and top presenter with his always top class witty repertoire. This is an evening I have no hesitation in recommending. It has an important factor in it’s’ favour for me, the finest smoking area for miles around. On Thursday night, Russ Dennett and a few friends went to the unlikely place for a rock concert, Holmfirth, to see the Darkness. They were by all accounts absolutely awesome and Russ tells a story of band member, Justin, spotting a young lad, later he found out was named Zac, in the crowd and suggested to his parents that they move him away from a p.a. stack. Being told that he had a hearing problem, he invited him to watch the gig in front of the drum riser. After a couple of more songs, Zac asked Justin if his pal, Haydn could sit with him. Justin handed Zac his own microphone to invite him up to join him on stage, a magnificent gesture. Furthermore, as they left the stage, Justin invited them to get whatever they wanted from the merchandise store, what a man. Thursday night’s weekly entertainment at the Victoria, Dronfield was provided by Ian Andrews, a particularly nice guy who was

superb on the night, proficiently singing a huge variety of songs from the past few decades to rapturous applause from a capacity audience. Ian will definitely be rebooked in the coming months. I am sad to report the passing of well-respected Dronfield lady, Christine Haslam. Christine had been ill for some time and had been well looked after by Lewis, her devoted husband for more than fifty years, and a good friend of mine. It is a well-known fact that the number of people that attend someone’s funeral is a good indication of how that person was regarded when they were alive. Dronfield church was full to the brim, which says it all about lovely Christine. God Bless and may she rest in peace.

LITTLE MIX ANNOUNCE SHEFFIELD ARENA DATE

Global pop sensations Little Mix will be embarking on their biggest UK tour to date in May-June 2014. The tour sees them headline some of the UK’s biggest arenas and includes a show at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield on Saturday 24th May 2014!! Tickets go on general sale from 10am on Friday 6th December in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk. Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirwall recently returned with their outstanding second album, ‘Salute’ which follows their hugely successful debut album ‘DNA’. Having already spent two weeks in the Top 10 of the UK Album Charts, ‘Salute’ presents Little Mix at their exuberant best and is infused with the electrifying energy the quartet bring to every live performance. Hit single ‘Move’ took the UK by storm in September, and sold over 130,000 copies within the first three weeks of its release in November. Showcasing the girls unrivalled ability to create fun and powerful pop music, ‘Move’ is a guaranteed dance floor filler. Across the 12 tracks that make up ‘Salute’, Little Mix boldly expand their contemporary pop and rnb influences with forward-looking production from the UK’s finest up-and-coming talent. Either writing or co-writing nine tracks themselves, collaborators across the album include up-and-comer Duvall, who adds sampled beat boxing and vocal flourishes to ‘Move’, whilst MNEK lends his hand to the explosive euphoria of ‘Nothing Feels Like You’. TMS, the team behind smash hits ‘Wings’ and ‘DNA’, once again combine with the band for the inspirational, powerful new single ‘Little Me’ which is due impact on 29th December. Still maintaining elements of the sound that made their debut such a standout, Little Mix also re-team with several other familiar collaborators namely Nicola Roberts, Shaznay Lewis and Futurecut. The result is an album that cements their place as a bold, truly brilliant UK pop act. Since Little Mix formed in 2011, they’ve had two No.1 singles and a platinum selling debut album in the UK. They’ve also flown the flag for British pop music abroad, with ‘DNA’ certified gold in Australia, and Top 5 in Japan. In the US they broke the Spice Girls’ record for the highest ever US chart debut by a British girl group, entering the charts at No.4. 2014 will kick off with the girls touring the US with Demi Lovato. ‘Salute’ also saw them once again achieve a second top 5 album in the UK. In anticipation of the tour, Little Mix have added, “We’re so excited to be preparing for our first arena tour! It’s incredible to think we’ll be playing for so many people every night. We are going to be pulling out all the stops to make sure it’s as unforgettable for our Mixers as it will be for us.” Little Mix’s new tour follows their hugely successful sold out headline tour in the UK and Ireland earlier this year! Tickets go on general sale from 10am on Friday 6th December in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 56 56 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

I said to my girlfriend, “I’m sorry for treating you really badly recently. How can I make it up to you?” “Well you can take me to the cinema tonight.” “Consider it done. I’ll even pick you up afterwards.” My new girlfriend just found out that I’m 42. She said, “You told me that you were 28 and a half!” I said, “I am if you think about it.” My wife called me last week. She said, “Three of the girls in the office have just received some flowers for Valentines Day, they are absolutely gorgeous.” I said, “That’s probably why they’ve received flowers then.” My wife came home from work to find me sitting watching the football. “I’ve decided I’m leaving you, all you do is talk about football you think about nothing else,” she said. “I’m also seeing someone else truth be told.” “Really?” I replied. “What team does he support?” The wife stormed up to me earlier “Do you know what day it is today?” “Apple pie” I replied. “Ah, very funny” she snarled, “when’s my birthday?” I said “Strawberry gateaux.” “You’re an idiot” she screamed before slamming the door. Looks like I’m in trouble now, I always get in trouble when my memory desserts me. I asked my girlfriend “Babe, the Champions’ League is on tonight, can we go out for dinner once it’s over?” “What?!” she exclaimed “You want to wait until ten o’clock to have dinner?” “No, don’t be silly” I replied, “I mean the 19th of May” A policeman pulled me over last night. “Is this yours?” he asked. I said, “No, it belongs to the company I work for. I’m just using it out of work hours to help my brother move house.” “What’s on the back?” he asked. I said, “A fridge freezer, a washing machine and a double mattress.” “Can you take the key out of the ignition and step off the moped for me sir.” I’ve just been into my local pet shop. I said, “How much is that doggy in the window?” “The one with the waggly tail?” the owner replied, laughing. “No, the one with three legs. I’ve only got twenty quid,” I replied.

November and its Magical Connections

The animal most closely associated with November is the snake. Of all the animals the snake is the most closely connected to the earth. It teaches us that we are each the nexus of power and we have a responsibility to ourselves and others. On a evolutionary level, the oldest part of the human brain is called the “snake brain” and is the part that controls our survival instincts.

SOUTH YORKSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE - FREE HOME SAFETY CHECKS As well as emergency response, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue services also carry out a wide range of prevention work, one of which is the free Home Safety Check service. Fire safety personnel visit people’s homes to offer fire safety guidance and fit smoke alarms for free where required. To sign up for a free home safety check call the hotline on 0114 253 2314 or text FREE to 87023. The scheme is available to the whole of South Yorkshire, but targets some services at the most vulnerable, such as older or disabled people. Top 10 tips to make your home safe • Fit a smoke alarm and check it regularly. We recommend checking it weekly. • Make a fire action plan so that everyone in your house knows how to escape in the event of fire. • Take care when cooking with hot oil and think about using thermostatically controlled deep fat fryers. • Never leave lit candles unattended. • Ensure cigarettes are stubbed out and disposed of carefully. • Never smoke in bed. • Keep matches and lighters away from kids. • Keep clothing away from heating appliances. • Take care in the kitchen! Accidents whilst cooking account for 59% of fires in the home. • Take special care when you are tired or when you’ve been drinking. Half of all deaths in domestic fires happen between 10pm and 8am.

SMOKE ALARM TESTING STAY BRIGHT KEEP BRIGHT: THE IMPACT REMINDERS OF STAINLESS STEEL ON Keeping your smoke alarms in good working order protects you and your family EVERYDAY LIFE against fire. However, it is just too easy to forget this crucial test. So register for a free service which reminds you, by email, tweet or text, when it’s time to test your smoke alarm, change the battery or renew the unit. Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and all of the money required to run the service is raised by our volunteers. This week we held a collection at the Morrisons Superstore in Bramley, Rotherham and we’d like to say thank you to everyone who donated to help us raise £307. Also thank you to Lucy, Andy, Lee and Barry who held the collection tins. The financial climate is difficult and understandably people are having to prioritise their spends and so what’s left for charity can be less than before. That’s why I’d like to ask you to consider giving just a couple of seconds of your time to raise money for Radio Nightingale without actually spending anything. First when you’re searching on the internet, give a try to www. radionightingale.easysearch. org.uk instead of your usual search engine. Every time you make a search from here Radio Nightingale gets half a penny. Have a think about how many searches you do a day or a week and see how that could add up. It really is free to use; the money to Radio Nightingale comes from the sponsored links on the site. Or if you’re shopping on the internet try www.easyfundraising. org.uk/radionightingale.This is a collection of thousands of retailers who’ve all agreed to give a percentage of their profits to Radio Nightingale because you make a purchase. Alot of the retailers make special offers through the easyfundraising website, so you might even save a little. There are thousands of retailers in the site Please, if you can, have a look at these websites. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital

AND SAY HELLO! MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

As reported last week, our annual Mission Christmas campaign is well underway here at Magic AM and Hallam FM. There are so many kids who will be going without, and families who will struggle to get a proper festive season especially this year. Please buy an extra gift and we’ll make sure it goes to a child who would otherwise wake up to nothing on Christmas Day. You can pop by any one of a whole list of drop off points across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands, all listed at magicam.co.uk. Or why not pop in and say hello at our studios? We have a very special open day planned for this Saturday where our doors will be well and truly open. You can call in for cuppa or even a piece of cake or two. I’ll be on air from 10am to 2pm broadcasting live and chatting to people involved with Mission Christmas, and I’d love you to join us either on the radio or in person. You’ll find us at Herries Road, Sheffield, and you can of course leave any gifts which you would like to donate. Come along and join in with the fun, and help us make it a happier Christmas with Magic AM’s Cash for Kids. See you soon!

Sometimes people write in because elderly relatives have passed on and they want to fill out some missing parts of their lives. There are many reasons why individuals set out to do their own research and seek out our help. Some even want to find out about relatives they might never have met who worked in or used clubs. Former Leicester lad Cal Swann, now an Australian resident, spent years researching his family’s roots. ‘Threads: a life part remembered’ is the result and it’s of great interest to us at Club Historians as his mother was a local club entertainer. Rosina Swann sang throughout the 1920s/30s in Midlands clubs. Cal’s book includes the mystery of who exactly was his biological father, who he never knew. Cal believes he may also have been an entertainer his mother met whilst doing the club circuit. He thought we might be able to offer some information that could help him in this search for his dad! Sadly we can’t always provide the sort of information Cal or others are looking. It might be quite specialist indeed, related to a particular club in a specific historical period. We don’t have the resources to gain such information but we can advise people on how they might continue their research. Finding out about particular clubs can be hard, though. Very few clubs have their own histories written up for people to access. Few thought to bother doing this: they probably just didn’t realize how important that might be for future generations. Then, old people pass away and information and memories are lost for good. Some ways to find out more would be to go to the local archives in the town where the club in question is (or was) and run a search to see what comes up for that specific period. This might include newspaper articles, local council planning permissions and so on. There is also the option of placing an advert or a letter in the local papers requesting information from readers who might have been familiar with the club, so they can get in touch. The local CIU branch office might also be able to offer some clues.

CHRISTMAS DINNER DRIVES SHEFFIELD CRACKERS New research conducted in Sheffield shows dinner party stress is a rising phenomenon Christmas is the season to be jolly - but not for the majority of people in Sheffield who say that hosting a festive dinner party is more stressful than visiting the dentist. The period is traditionally a time for friends and family, mistletoe and wine - but most Sheffielders can’t bear hosting a dinner party. According to research, a stress-induced condition dubbed ‘Hostess-itis’ has gripped the city, with 77 per cent believing that hosting a dinner party is more stressful than visiting a dentist - an experience most people dread. And incredibly, 68 per cent believe playing host is more stressful than taking a driving test and 51 per cent would rate ‘hostess-itis’ higher than going for a job interview. The figures, revealed by frozen dessert manufacturer Coppenrath & Wiese from a sample of 100 people in Sheffielders, even told how one in 10 Sheffielders were so anxious about hosting a party that they had a PANIC ATTACK. Psychologist Donna Dawson said: “Hostessitis is a perfect way to describe the anxiety and panic that overwhelms us when putting on a dinner party, as we are afraid that we will be judged and found lacking. “We rush about on a surge of adrenalin, inflicting headaches, stomach ache and even panic attacks on ourselves in our attempt to make everything perfect.” The research advised five ways to beat stress while hosting Christmas parties: 1. Choose your guests wisely - don’t invite people who clash or are argumentative, it will cause an unpleasant atmosphere 2. Serve yourself - save time by presenting vegetables, side dishes and sauces so guests can serve themselves 3. Be prepared - do as much as you can in terms of buying your ingredients and preparing in advance 4. Cater for one extra - that way, if anything gets burnt (or dropped on the floor), you have a back-up. If all goes well, you’ve got a premade dinner for one for another day. 5. Remember why you’re doing this - to have a good time, so relax.

A STONE’S THROW FROM DEATH A Jack Russell’s fate was almost set in stone after she swallowed up to 80 pieces of gravel, which nearly killed her. PDSA vets in Blackpool realised Star was on rocky ground after they could feel ‘crunchy material’ in her stomach. But they were left stunned when an x-ray revealed that the seven-year-old Jack Russell Terrier had wolfed down huge quantities of gravel - with dozens of them littered in her stomach. Owner Tracy McCaul (49) had become worried about her beloved dog after Star refused any food for 24 hours and was barely able to move. She took the stricken dog to PDSA’s Blackpool pet hospital, where vets warned Tracy her pet would require risky surgery to remove the stones. Jennifer Jackson, PDSA senior

vet, said: “Star’s condition was very worrying – she could hardly stand and was extremely dehydrated. On close examination, we could feel something in Star’s stomach but when we saw the x-rays we couldn’t believe how many stones she had swallowed. “It really was touch and go whether Star would survive – the quantity of sharp stones passing through her intestines was damaging them and given the possibility of them piercing her intestines, there was a danger of her developing potentially fatal peritonitis. We had to carry out emergency surgery to remove the stones and thankfully she has gone on to make a full recovery. ” Tracy, from Fleetwood, said she believed Star had eaten the stones while playing in the garden: “I was very shocked when PDSA told me she had swallowed so many stones, I just didn’t think it was possible. Star was kept at the PetAid hospital for several days and I was really worried about her. “I’m so grateful to PDSA for the care and treatment they gave Star. Without them I don’t think she’d still be alive.” Tracy, who also owns another dog called Mitzie, has since removed all

gravel from her garden to prevent any similar incidents in the future. PDSA sees many cases of pets eating inappropriate items every year. These can be fatal if they cause a blockage in the intestines. Owners are advised to speak to their vet for advice if they suspect their pet has eaten something it shouldn’t have.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

Brr......it’s been freezing, the ‘lids’ have been on the waters around here and many anglers are now tucked up at home for the winter.... but not me, I’m still out fishing whenever I get chance! I’ve been in Cheshire this week at Gawsworth Fisheries on the Cheshire border; it’s one of my favourite venues and I can usually rely on a few fish making my journey worthwhile, so I took some of the new Marukyu groundbait, Nori-G, out for the first time.... It’s green, full of very fine particles, has little food value but is packed with attractions, so ideal for winter use; it also stinks. I chose to fish Lodge Pool with is a small pool with a huge variety of species to go for, so I was fairly confident a couple of hours work would produce enough fish to photograph. I set up in a roomy peg and considered my rig. A 9’ leger rod twinned with a small fixed spool reel loaded with 4lb line, a cage feeder finished off with a tiny size 18 to 2lb bottom seemed appropriate, so I tipped a small amount of groundbait into my mixing bowl and added a bit of lake water.... The Nori-G mixed well on the bank, I could perhaps have used a riddle to remove any lumps, but in truth rubbing it between my hands seemed to get rid of most of them and it was soon ready to pack into my feeder. I put two white maggots on the hook hoping for roach or skimmers, cast out to the deeper water and clipped up; casting every ten minutes for the first hour soon got a little bit of bait into the swim and bites which had been tentative twitches soon turned into something I could hit with some regularity. I know that chub are fairly dominant in this pool, and a longer tail often results in bites on the drop, but I just could not get them going! After missing a few lightening fast bites, I shortened the hook link to around a foot which solved the problem; roach and bream aplenty were eager to feed over the new groundbait and I caught steadily for the remainder of the session. The angler in the next peg was fishing the maggot feeder, and although his fish were perhaps of a better average size, he wasn’t having the consistent action that I was getting. This struck both of us as unusual as our hook baits were the same double maggot combination and were landing no more than twenty yards apart; it really was very strange!

I tried changing to a straight bomb rig and the action died; a change to maggot feeder bought only more skimmers and roach, so I’m convinced that a few feeders filled with Nori-G made a real difference. If I had been fishing a match, then the constant run of fish would have given me a real winning chance.....coincidently, two anglers to my left barely caught....they didn’t use groundbait, so I think that adds a little weight to my findings! It’s great stuff and I will certainly use it for much of my winter roach fishing....

This Saturday’s top races are the Grade 1 chases from Sandown the Tingle Creek Chase and the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase. The Channel 4 coverage has four races from there and a further three from Aintree – some spectacular action is expected with the possible return to action of Champion Chaser Sprinter Sacre. Sandown: 1.50 Racing Post Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, Grade 1, 2m: This is normally a very informative and exciting race to watch with top novice chasers going at it hammer and tongs over the famous Sandown “railway fences”. This year looks well up to standard with some progressive young chasers in the line-up. The one I like best is Alan King’s Balder Succes whose performance against the clock last time out marked him down as very smart indeed. None of those behind him that day have exactly let the form down and I reckon that he has a seriously good chance here. Through Manyriverstocross the trainer should know where he stands with Claret Cloak but there are others that are as yet not fully exposed over fences such as Taquin du Seuil, Hinterland, Dodging Bullets, De Faoithesdream and (to a lesser extent) Roger Beantown. Grandouet has yet to prove that he can get round over fences and that alone tempers confidence in his chance.

3.00 Betvictor Tingle Creek Chase, Grade 1, 4yo+, 2m: There is a doubt over the participation of Sprinter Sacre at the present time as he had a poor result from a tracheal wash on Monday. He will be checked again on Thursday before Nicky Henderson makes the decision about whether to run. Obviously the race will be totally transformed if he is absent. Sprinter Sacre is the obvious choice but will be offered at an almost unbackable price in the market (he is currently on offer at 1/12). Henderson has also entered Captain Conan and this one could play a big part if the favourite defects. However, in the possible absence of Sprinter Sacre, I reckon that there could be a bit of value in the shape of Somersby. This one took the Haldon Gold

2.25 December Handicap Hurdle, Listed, 4yo+, 0-150, 2m 110yds: Nicky Henderson has his string in fine form, which could be an indicator to the chances of his River Maigue in this. He finished seventh in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival when last seen but that was no mean performance as the winner Champagne Fever looks top class to me. I have a healthy respect for River Maigue’s chance here but think that a couple of those that have run already this term may just have a fitness edge. The nod goes to David Pipe’s Waterunder whose last time out defeat of Horizontal Speed at Exeter came in a fast time. The other one whose last run came in another fast time is Donald McCain’s Clondaw Kaempfer but he is entered at Aintree as well and may go there. He finished ninth last time out but the Haydock race in which he ran was won by the classy Jonjo O’Neill inmate More of That, who may yet prove to be a Festival top gun. After this trio the further reserves are (in order of preference): Ronaldo Des Mottes; Specialagent Alfie; Milord; Makari; and Radmores Revenge.

Cup at Exeter when last seen, defeating Cue Card by just over six lengths in the process (admittedly when in receipt of 17lbs). The sixth placed that day, Fago, has since won and Cue Card well and truly advertised the value of the form in the Betfair Chase. Now with Mick Channon Somersby is quite interesting as an (each way) alternative to Sprinter Sacre. Apart from the above mentioned trio, others that look to me to hold some sort of chance are: Viva Colonia; Sire de Grugy; and Oiseau de Nuit. 3.35 London National (Handicap Chase), 5yo+, 0-150, 3m 5f 110yds: This looks to be a pretty competitive encounter with several having performed well against the clock when last seen. A chance is taken that Jo Hughes’ previous track winner Soll (also entered in the 2.10 at Aintree) may be able to score first time out. This one ran well in the Grand National when finishing seventh to Auroras Encore so the trip this time should not be a problem and he has won at the track over three miles and half a furlong. I also like the chances of the first and second reserves, Buddy Bolero and Ikorodu Road. After these the next reserves are: Alfie Spinner; Court By Surprise; and Pineau De Re. Aintree: 2.10 Betfred Becher Handicap Chase, Grade 3, 6yo+, 3m 2f: David Pipe may well hold the key to this race as his Junior carries top weight and therefore dictates the weights carried by the others. He also has Master Overseer, Bostons Angel and, Swing Bill entered here and the latter one often runs well at the track (he finished fourth in this race last year but also has an entry for the 3.20 later on this card). However, Alan King’s Walkon, who carries second top weight, has also run well at this track. He finished a ¾ length second to Triolo D’Alene in the Topham here in April when trying to give that one a stone – some effort in the light of Triolo D’Alene’s Hennessy victory last weekend. The extra distance here will suit and in my view he has a better than average chance. First reserve Soll enters the picture on his Grand National seventh but also has a Sandown engagement. Others that have decent chances are: Chartreux; Ikorodu Road (also in at Sandown); Across the Bay; and Kruzhlinin. 2.45 Betfred Goals Galore Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 2m 4f: Both Party Rock and Clondaw Kaempfer have won over this course and distance but, based on their finishing positions behind More of That at Haydock a week last Saturday, Jenny Candlish’s Party Rock just edges the vote over Donald McCain’s Clondaw Kaempfer (also engaged in the 2.25 at Sandown). There may not be much between the pair here however as that was the McCain horse’s first run of this season whereas Party Rock had already run a couple of times before. Second reserve slot goes to Splash of Ginge followed next by Whisky Yankee, Fergall, Liberty Court and Like Minded. 3.20 Betfred Grand Sefton Handicap Chase, 6yo+, 2m 5f 110yds: Swing Bill, Seabass and Dunowen Point all have things to recommend them but Toby Lerone looks to be on an upward curve and can land the hat-trick off his feather weight. Sergeant Pink, Frontier Spirit and Plein Pouvoir might be the ones that end up giving the selection most to think about as they also carry light weights.

“4 POINT WEEKEND FEELS GREAT” SAYS DOYLE All the numbers point upwards. 4 points this weekend for the Steelers. 2 Win against Hull and Fife and just 3 goals conceded. Goalie Frank Doyle was delighted with them all. “We hadn’t been to successful in putting 4 point weekends together so it was a great feeling to do it again this weekend. It was well deserved. “These past two games were so important. I felt we came together as a team and everyone of us in that room came to play on both nights” Doyle didn’t believe the Steelers did anything different to weekends gone by “I don’t think we did” he said “It’s hard not to feel the pressure because we had lost so many Sunday games. I didn’t see anything specific. It’s just that this is a league you have to come ready to play and we did. In the past there has been a mixture of reasons things didn’t go our way. A bad bounce, a bad call. This weekend we didn’t allow that and things worked out well, some weekends we just have found ourselves on the wrong end of the stick” As the 4 point, double win weekend comes the Steelers find themselves in the unusual position of a 10 day break before their next game “Crazy how that happens isn’t it” said Doyle “part of you wants to quickly build on those two wins after waiting for them to come along. On the flip side we have some beaten up bodies that need the rest and time away from the rink. Maybe the break has come at the best time for those guys. It would be nice to get the injured guys back and the broken bodies mended so we can see a full line up and then we will really see what team we have here”

DICKOV DELIGHTED AFTER QPR WIN Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his side beat Harry Redknapp’s Queens Park Rangers at the Keepmoat Stadium. Paul said; “ I’m obviously delighted with the result but also the performance after Tuesday night at Charlton. We have more than competed against probably the top team in the division and deserved to get three point. “We now can take a lot of belief from it and a lot of confidence from it and take it into the text two games. “We were all disappointed with Tuesday night, I felt not just the players but we all let the fans down. It was a long journey for them, they spent their money so I hope they were all here today because that win was for them. “The main difference today was tactically without the ball we were fantastic, we sat off them when we needed to, when we pressed them we press with real purpose. That is something we have work on a lot, especially Thursday and Friday this week. “Second half with the ball we caused them a lot of problems. I asked them to go out second half and have a really good go at them because the feeling at half time was that we matched them but could do better. To a man I thought they were great. “If you told me we was going to get six points from Yeovil, Charlton and QPR I would have snapped your hand off. What we need to do now is back it up, not get complacent and go down to Birmingham with the same attitude as we have shown today because that will be a tough game for us.”

County Senior League There was a busy league programme in the County Senior League on Saturday, with 24 games taking place across the four divisions. Premier Division There was only one place to start this week. At the Memorial Ground second placed Penistone Church hosted league leaders Oughtibridge WMFC. Penistone would not have been foolish pre-game if they thought scoring four goals at home against the leaders would have been enough to give them all three points. They did just that, however, it was not enough with Oughtibridge winning the game 6-4, with goals from Jack Ridge, Josh Coulson, Jack Spencer, Joe Appleyard and two own goals. Handsworth climb above Penistone and into second place, with a 1-0 over Swinton Athletic at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Handsworth are nine points back from Oughtibridge’s lead, with three games spare. They host Oughtibridge in two weeks at Handsworth Junior Sports Club. Frecheville ended Houghton Main’s four game winning streak, beating them 2-0 at Frecheville Sports and Social Club. Daniel Bainbridge and Reece Blake got the vital goals for Frecheville, who are on a three game winning streak of their own now. Joe Thornton scored a hat-trick for Athersley Recreation Reserves to inspire them to a 4-1 an impressive 4-1 home win over fifth placed Millmoor Juniors. Jamie Jones got the only goal at Holme Lea Sports Ground, where Everest beat Swallownest Miners Welfare 1-0. Swallownest are still in sixth position in the table, but have now lost all of their last six league games. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves were 3-1 winners

Ecclesfield Red Rose claimed the bragging rights in the North Sheffield Derby, as they beat High Green Villa 3-1 at Thorncliffe Playing Fields. Division One It was third versus second at Silkstone Recreation Ground, with Silkstone United hosting Rotherham Town. The game ended 1-1, but that was enough to give Rotherham Town top spot as they have superior goal difference to Wickersley. Goals from Chris Ledwood, Joe Byrne and Robert Cupitt gave Thorncliffe a 3-1 home win over Joker FC. The win takes Thorncliffe into fifth place, but in this tight division they are only four points shy of the lead. South Kirkby Colliery are four games unbeaten, after a 1-1 draw at home to Thorpe Hesley. Both teams remain just below mid-table after the stalemate. Nicholas Christian scored four goals for Davy FC to help them to a 7-2 away win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves. The result comes only two weeks after Davy’s first league win (a 6-2 win over Thorpe Hesley), and helps them climb to third bottom. Bottom side Sheffield Bankers ended a run of seven straight league defeats, with a 1-0 win over Jubilee Sports at Davy Sports Ground. Also at the bottom, second bottom Sheffield Athletic suffered their four straight league defeat, with a 3-1 home loss to Penistone Church Reserves. Division Two Kingstone United were back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats in league and cup. They were 5-2 winners over Maltby Main Reserves at Muglet Lane. They were unable to regain top spot though, as North Gawber Colliery were comfortable 4-0 winners away at Sheffield Lane Top. Jordan Lodge scored twice for North Gawber, who sit two points clear of Kingstone, but they have played two games more. Fourth placed AFC Dronfield and third placed

Rotherham United complete the emergency loan signing of James Tavernier... Rotherham United have completed the emergency loan signing of Newcastle United defender James Tavernier. The Bradford-born full-back signed his paperwork this morning and joins the Millers to provide cover for the injured Mark Bradley, on a short-term emergency loan deal. Tavernier, who has made nine senior appearances for the Magpies, will train with his new team mates at Roundwood this morning. “He is a very accomplished full-back, who can play on either side of the pitch and if needed can step in and do an excellent job at centreback if required,” boss Steve Evans told www. themillers.co.uk “With the injury to Mark Bradley, and Rob Milsom who covers us at left-back also having

SIMPLY STUNNING SAYS EVANS Steve Evans described Rotherham United’s performance as scary and simply stunning after the Millers produced a thrilling display to demolish Gillingham 4-1 at New York Stadium. A dominant display from start to finish by Millers produced goals from Nouha Dicko, Kieran Agard, Ben Pringle and debutant James Tavernier ensuring a comfortable win and moved the Millers into the League One playoff places. “We’ve played some good football,” beamed Evans after the game. “It helps when you’ve scored some good goals. We’ve played well and we’re in that evolution but we’ll make ourselves better and we’re still working on some things. Some weeks it will work and some weeks it might not but we were simply stunning in that first half-an-hour, and dear me it was scary how good we were for the level. “In the second half in spells that continued and whilst it was nearly all about the goals, the passing was excellent and the lads just about played as well as they can.” Caribbean Sports shared the points, following a 3-3 draw at Gosforth Playing Fields. Caribbean are now four games unbeaten in the league and retain third place. 23 year old Jordan Cocks scored the only goal at Stone Close to give Kiveton Park their first win of the season. Kiveton were 1-0 winners over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves, but sadly it was not enough to carry them of the foot-of-the-table. Three points above Kiveton are New Bohemians, who were beaten 4-0 at Davy Sports Ground by Sheffield FC Reserves Goals from Javan Sherrett and Jordan Holmes gave Boynton Sports a 2-1 home win over Frecheville Reserves. Under 21 Division Treeton Terriers U21 were once again in the goals at Meadowhall Soccer Centre. This time they were 5-0 winners over Swinton Athletic U21 thanks to goals from Tom Bartholomew (2), Luke Beadham (2) and Adam Powell. Treeton still lead the division on goal difference. In second place are Swallownest Miners Welfare U21, who were 6-2 winners at home over Davy FC U21. Swallownest’s goal differential is only three goals worse than Treeton’s at the moment. North Gawber Colliery U21 remain the only unbeaten side in the U21 Division, after they beat Millmoor Juniors U21 3-0 at home, with goals from Joe Davies and Josh McKeegan (2). North Gawber are in third place only a point behind Treeton, who face away from home next Saturday. Houghton Main U21 got some revenge for the 5-0 loss they suffered to Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21 in mid-October. This time Houghton Main had a much better day, claiming the three points with a 3-0 win. Valley Knights U21 ended a winless league run of four matches, with a 4-2 home win over Bawtry Town U21. Gwilliam has scored five goals in his last three games. Meadowhall League

League Cup 1st Round There was one outstanding round one game on Sunday, with The Devonshire winning 5-1 away against Wisewood Hounds U21. The Devonshire will now play away against High Noon in the second round. League Cup 3rd Round Last years’ Cup finalists Hackenthorpe booked their place in round four, with a comprehensive 5-1 win over HSBC at Swallownest Miners Welfare Ground. Handsworth Turf Tavern translated their recent impressive league form in to the cup on Sunday, as they beat SWD 5-0 at Davy Sports Club. Handsworth have won their last three league games on top of this result. Extra time was needed to separate Hurlfield and Intake Ball Inn in the all Division One affair at the SWD Ground. In the end Ryan Smith proved to be the difference, scoring all three goals for Hurlfield in a 3-2 win. Brunsmeer FC U21 are the first U21 team this season to progress to the 4th Round. They were 4-2 winners over Concord at Dore Playing Fields. Mosborough U21 are the only other U21 team still alive in the cup, they play their 2nd Round game against Crookes in January. THREE GAMES UNBEATEN FOR BLADES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades made it three games unbeaten and five points in a week with a hard-earned point at Leyton Orient. Against one of League One’s frontrunners, 1,128 Unitedites were appreciative of the efforts of the players at the end of the game. Conor Coady’s first senior goal gave the Blades the lead but Dean Cox levelled late on for Russell Slade’s side, halfvolleying into the top corner. Maguire and Baxter returned to United’s starting line-up which forced a little reshuffle for manager Clough. Hill moved out to left back with White ahead of him and Baxter partnered Porter. Just six minutes in, McMahon picked up the game’s first booking for a foul on Batt and although the home side were the quickest out of the blocks, their early threats resulted from set-pieces. From a James corner on 15 minutes, Long did well to save Clarke’s shot and the Blades goalkeeper gathered at the second attempt, despite having Batt laid upon him. Another corner saw Baudry head over under pressure whilst centre half Clarke strode forward to lump a number of throw-ins into the box. From open play, on 22 minutes, Mooney linked up with Cox, but the former’s shot was pulled across the box and wide. The pace of Batt caused United major problems twice in the space of as many minutes just after the half hour mark.

He outran Hill and Doyle before laying off to Cox, who was in space but Long was ideally placed to make a tremendous save, low to his right. McMahon was next to be beaten by the speed of Batt but this time Long sprinted off his line to smother. Orient may have had the better of the first half but United were resolute and going forward there were a number of corners, whilst on the stroke of half-time, McGinn had a shot blocked and a chip from McMahon was plucked out of the air by goalkeeper Jones. Early in the second half lashed efforts from Odubajo and Baxter failed to trouble either goalkeeper, whilst Long saved again from Mooney, even though the striker was pulled up for offside as the shot was unleashed. Doyle accepted a booking for a foul on Vincelot, who robbed Baxter soon after but Batt was unable to take advantage. Going forward, a neat move involving McMahon and Doyle saw Baxter fire wide on 64 minutes. The lead, however, was just moments away for the travelling fans. Baxter and White - who took a whack in the face for his troubles - battled away before Porter unselfishly laid off into the path of the advancing COADY, who calmly placed home his first Blades goal. White was forced to leave the field with his injury, replaced by Lappin, whilst Maguire picked up United’s third booking

with 15 minutes remaining. Expectedly, the home side renewed their efforts and Batt went close before the leveller arrived on 81 minutes. A loft into the box was only half-cleared and the ball dropped neatly for COX, who halfvolleyed into the top corner, giving Long no chance. Taylor replaced Porter, followed later by Baxter making way for Murphy, who quickly attempted to make his presence felt with a run at the home defence. Six minutes of added time astonished a few inside the stadium and there were chances at both ends. Bartley had an effort blocked and a run from Murphy ended with a shot saved by Jones. Three minutes into the extra period, from Cox’s cross, Long pushed a Bartley header around a post and from the resulting corner the Blades goalkeeper held Mooney’s header. Orient: Jones, Omozusi, Vincelot (Bartley 88), Cuthbert (Simpson 72), Baudry, Cox, James (Wright 69), Mooney, Odubajo, Batt, Clarke. Unused: Sawyer, Larkins, Lasimant, Gorman. Blades: Long, White (Lappin 72), Maguire, Hill, Doyle, Porter (Taylor 78), Baxter (Murphy 85), McGinn, Collins, Coady, McMahon. Unused: Howard, Miller, Cuvelier, King.

NIGEL’S NOTES SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough gave his usual honest and frank assessment following Saturday’s hard-earned draw against Leyton Orient. The point gained - United’s fifth in the last three games - lifted Clough’s side out of the relegation slots in Sky Bet League One. Liverpool loanee Conor Coady’s first senior goal gave the Blades the lead but Dean Cox levelled for Leyton Orient, his half-volley looping into the top corner from the edge of the box. “It is a shame really because all was going to plan and a screamer of a goal has denied us all three points,” said Clough. “That’s what it took to undo us. “We have looked solid of late and are making teams score goals with a bit of quality.” The Blades chief added: “We kept two up front, didn’t go too defensive because we wanted to win the game. We need to work on decision-making in the final third because as an away side you are not going to get too many chances. “We are trying to build up confidence, are now three unbeaten and that helps. It has been a tough week, but we have picked up five points.”
