Copley’s Column The final of the X Factor took place this weekend and it was no surprise that Leicester lass and former prison officer Sam Bailey was triumphant. Sam had been the favourite from day one and had been my choice all along. I can’t help thinking that my money would have been better invested backing Sam rather the non-trying horses that I have an uncanny knack of finding or the under par football teams that have ruined my Saturday afternoons for as long as I can remember. X Factor was part one of a very good television night as it was also BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which is also always great viewing. I am feeling a bit like Mystic Meg as my prediction that the winner would be Andy Murray was correct. This was richly deserved mainly for being the first British winner of the Wimbledon Men’s singles champion since Fred Perry won it in 1935. The funeral of Nelson Mandela took place, and it was testament to this iconic man that it was a grand affair with royalty, heads of state and A List celebrities in attendance. How nice to see in South Africa, nations of the world united in grief and respect for this great man who brought his country back into international acceptance. The Basil d’Olivera scandal is now a distant memory. We have also lost this week a superstar Irish actor, Peter O’Toole aged eighty one. He was best known for his starring role in Lawrence of Arabia, a film which established him as an international star. During his life he suffered from, and overcame, serious problems with alcohol. This is always a tough time for public houses with Christmas less than a fortnight away, which was the reason for a smaller turnout on Thursday for an excellent singer and entertainer, Derren Boulton. His great vocal talent and choice of material were much in evidence, and it was heart- warming to see other artistes lending their support in the shape of Rachel Raynor, who appears there this Thursday and is not to be

Bobby Knutt being busy and Billy Flywheel absent through work commitments. I was pleased to invite one of my favourite singer/songwriters. Steven Birks, who was pleased to see a few familiar faces. On the sports front, we had on Saturday for the first time this season, the Sheffield double, with United beating Swindon and Wednesday getting an impressive win at Watford at the same time losing the unwanted statistic of being the only team in the football league not to have kept a clean sheet.

We are in the time of the Snow Queen who is also known as the Northern Germanic Goddess Hoda who is connected with fertility and domestic animals. Those ladies who bathed in Holda`s pool quickly became pregnant and according to folklore legends when Holda fluffs her feather pillows it snows, this is how she earned the title the Snow Queen. It is also said that when their is fog it comes from Holda`s witches fire. Her festival day is January 6th when she walks between the two worlds of the living and the dead. You can ask her to protect you during the cold winter months by saying: “All around me now the icy winter winds do blow, I call upon Holda the Queen of the Snow, Leaders of the wild hunt, great lady hear my cry, Watch over and defend me as you sail through the sky, By the elements of the Earth, Air, Fire and Water, Guard and protect your magical sons and daughter.”

NEWS & INFORMATION
LACK OF SUPPORT HOW DOES THE AUTUMN AFTER HOSPITAL STAYS STATEMENT AFFECT YOU? ARE LEAVING OLDER On 5 December 2013, the Chancellor Osborne presented his Autumn PEOPLE VULNERABLE TO George Statement. Some of the announcements had already been made previously, but READMISSION many issues of concern to pensioners were Almost 150,000 older people have had no support on returning home from hospital and for those that did get some kind of help, a fifth (approximately 20 per cent) didn’t receive essential continuing support, warns our research released today. Older people can be especially vulnerable and frail following a stint in hospital and it is particularly important that they are supported to manage health conditions and stay independent to prevent readmission. Currently 15.3 per cent of over 75s are readmitted within 28 days of discharge putting stretched accident and emergency services under more pressure. The frailty of older people on their return home from hospital, is confirmed by the research conducted by research company PCP on our behalf, which reveals that 23 per cent of older people in Britain discharged after an overnight stay said that they felt very vulnerable when they came home and eight per cent did not feel able to look after themselves. However, with the right and often very simple and inexpensive support, readmissions can be dramatically reduced. Since the establishment of the Royal Voluntary Service Hospital 2 Home scheme in Leicestershire in 2012, over 600 older people have been supported, with very low readmission rates to hospital among those who used the scheme (seven per cent within six weeks). You can read our report on our website ‘Avoiding unhappy returns’, a summary of the achievements of Hospital 2 Home service in its first year. Comparatively, nationally, our research found that just one in five older people received support through social services or the hospital. In the absence of a formalised discharge care plan, the vast majority of respondents, over 90 per cent, received help from a family member or friend. However, previous research from Royal Voluntary Service found that changes in family structures and circumstances, such as divorce and relocation, raised concerns about the availability of family support for older people. The same study found that 15 per cent of respondents aged 85 years and older lived more than 40 miles apart from their children. Research shows two-thirds of people admitted to hospital are over 65 years old and readmissions within 30 days carry a cost to the NHS of 2.2 billion per year; Royal Voluntary Service is calling on hospital trusts to work with the charity and similar organisations, to make the transition from home to hospital easier through schemes such as Home from Hospital. Royal Voluntary Service Home From Hospital schemes support people over the age of 55 over a period of six weeks after a stay in hospital by helping with nutrition, transport and integration back into the community. The service enables prompt hospital discharge, as well as reducing isolation and increasing independence and overall well-being in older people on their return home. Overall, the charity supports over 100,000 older people each month to stay independent in their own homes for longer with tailor made solutions. Through its army of 40,000 volunteers, the charity runs services such as Good Neighbours (companionship), Meals-onWheels and Books-on-Wheels that alleviate loneliness and help older people. Royal Voluntary Service also provides practical support for older people who have been in hospital through its On Ward Befriending and Home from Hospital services. Royal Voluntary Service is expanding its hospital services. To find out how we can support in your area, contact us on 0845 608 0122. For further info contact: 0845 600 5885 or Email: southyorkshirehub@ royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk
not covered at all. Nevertheless, the main announcements affecting older people were as follows:
• From April 2014, the Basic State Pension (BSP) will rise to £113.10 a week in line with the September CPI figure of 2.7%, giving an increase of £2.95 a week and £1.80 for many women who receive a pension based on their husband’s contributions. Had the RPI still been in place, the increase would have been 3.2%. It means over the year the basic state pension will be £28.60 less under CPI than under RPI. Until earnings regain their value, the RPI remains the best indices for uprating pensions. • From April 2014, the state second pension and millions of public sector pensions will also rise by the CPI figure of 2.7%. • From April 2014, the means-tested Pension Credit Guarantee for a single pensioner is likely to rise from £145.40 per week to £148.35 and from £222.05 per week for a couple to £226.80. This would give the Pension Credit the same actual cash increase as the basic state pension, rather than the same percentage increase, and follow the announcement the Chancellor made in March 2012. • To qualify for the Savings Credit element of Pension Credit, an individual would have to have an income of £115.30 a week and a couple, £183.90. The maximum amount they could claim would then be £18.06 a week for a single pensioner and £22.89 for a couple. This is a reduction from £18.54 and £23.93 respectively. • From October 2015, all those who reach pension age before the introduction of the single-tier state pension in April 2016 (including existing pensioners), will be eligible to buy extra National Insurance contributions as a way of boosting their state pension. The exact cost of the scheme is expected to be published shortly. • From April 2014, the basic personal allowance for Income Tax for those aged under 65 will be £9205, but the Chancellor has stuck to his plans to freeze the age related personal tax allowances for someone aged 65 to 74 at £10,500 and for someone aged 75 or more at £10,660 until they align with the ordinary personal allowance. It is assume that in 2015 the under 65 allowance will catch up with the 65-74 rate and thereafter personal tax allowances will rise accordingly; including for
pensioners. The Chancellor also reiterated the plan to introduce from April 2014 a transferable tax allowance for married couples and those in civil partnerships. Where one half does not have an income high enough to meet their tax allowance, they may transfer up to £1000 of that unused allowance to their partner. This will represent a tax break of £200 a year for around 8m couples, including pensioners. Interestingly, contrary to statements previously made by Labour shadow chancellor, Ed Balls, George Osborne announced that whilst spending on benefits would in the future be capped, the state pension would not be included. The Chancellor also announced that the Local Housing Allowance would rise next year by the CPI of 2.2%, but would then be capped at 1% until the end of the Parliament. Local authorities would also be given additional help to freeze council tax for a further year, if they so wished. The Winter Fuel Payment will remain at £200 for households with someone at or over the female State Pension Age and at £300 for households with someone aged 80 or over. From 2015, winter fuel payments will be restricted to people living abroad in countries that have an average winter temperature comparable with or lower than that of South West England. Hidden away in the Autumn Statement was a further proposal to give families a tax break if they build a ‘granny flat’ on their property. From April 2014, those with an annexe lived in by a family member will qualify for a 50% reduction in the council tax bill for that property. The government hopes that this will encourage more families to build extensions and look after their elderly relatives. However, the biggest announcement and the one which caused the most headlines the day before the Autumn Statement was the plan to accelerate the rise in the state pension age (SPA) in line with alleged rising life expectancy. The Government has already said that the SPA will rise to 66 by 2020 and 67 by 2028. In addition, the chancellor now plans to raise the SPA to 68 by around 2035 – affecting all those currently aged 46 or under. A further increase in retirement age to 69 is expected sometime around 2045, while those in their twenties are likely to see a SPA of 70 by 2055. The Treasury estimates this change will save the state up to £400bn over the next half century. An independent review will assess likely lifespans every five years and will issue its first report after the 2015 election. However, contrary to the chancellor’s assertion, the Office for National Statistics latest figures show that longevity is falling. In 2009, men aged 65 were predicted to live a further 19 years and for women, 21.3 years. However, the 2013 data now shows the figures have fallen to 18.3 years and 20.6 years respectively.

by the OECD (office for Economic Cooperation and Development) that Britain has almost the worst state pension system amongst developed economies in relation to its value against average earnings. A rise of 2.7% in the state pension is therefore going to do very little to address that position. The freezing of the personal tax allowances looks set to continue for at least another year, and whilst some pensioner couples may gain from the transferable tax allowance proposal, many will have already lost money from the allowance being frozen and will find it difficult to recoup that lost income. The issue of the rising state pension age is also one of concern for many older people who worry about their children and grandchildren. There is a wealth of evidence to show that richer people tend to live around 11 years longer than their poorer counterparts, and those with particularly stressful jobs. For years, the NPC has called for a decent period of retirement, after a lifetime of work and this remains something we must continue to argue, particularly as part of our campaign to build a connection with the younger generation and the struggles they face. After the announcement, the NPC gave a reaction to the proposals. This is reproduced below for information.

#NOTDRIVING FESTIVE PUB CRAWL SAVES 121 NON DRIVEN MILES
Thornbridge Brewery ale, bands, and buses were the talk of the town on Wednesday night as #NOTDRIVING staged a festival pub crawl to demonstrate how to get around to Sheffield’s best boozers this Christmas as part of its anti-drink drive campaign. Led by Santa himself and a convoy of naff Christmas jumpers, the crawl touched down at six Thornbridge venues in the order of Hallamshire House, The Bath Hotel, Dada, The Stag, Graze Inn and The Greystones. Collectively, 121.8 non driven miles were clocked up between the 21 strong group as they walked and rode the bus to get from one venue to another - a route which spanned a distance of 5.8 miles. Regular passengers riding the number 4 and number 81 buses were together delighted and surprised to witness the Christmas themed gang, packing out their journey home from work. The pub crawl was supported and attended by
members of local bands including Sky Larkin, Screaming Maldini, The Hosts, and High Hazels; staff from Thornbridge Brewery, local press, competition winners and Not Driving staff. Spirits were high throughout the night as guests sampled the new Thornbridge / Not Driving warming winter Ale, ‘Myrissty’ which is on sale throughout all Thornbridge pubs. The troupe was joined by a brass quartet at The Stag who lead them onwards to a soundtrack of Christmas carols – there was even some impromptu singing from members of the bands, who joined forces to harmonise the Christmas carols. Nicola Freitas, Head of PR for Not Driving, commented: “A lot of fun was had by all on the pub crawl, but there is a serious underlying message to what we’re aiming to do here. We need to keep people safe this Christmas and we hope that by highlighting Sheffield’s reliable transport system as a way to get around, that people will think twice about using their cars.” To incentivise people to not drive this Christmas, #NOTDRIVING is giving away hundreds of pounds worth of prizes on www.notdriving.co.uk in return for people leaving the car at home and using other means of transport. Prizes include £200 of Meadowhall Vouchers, Tramlines Festival VIP tickets and £100 worth of Drop Dead Clothing.

AS PARTY FEVER HITS YORKSHIRE SURVEY REVEALS EMBARRASSING BOOZE-FUELLED REGRETS AS the Christmas spirit hits Yorkshire, a new survey by Cancer Research UK reveals some revellers are still red-faced from last year’s drunken antics. Dodgy dancing, flirting with colleagues and spilling secrets are just a few of the ‘morning after’ regrets uncovered by a light-hearted poll* launching the charity’s New Year fundraising campaign, Dryathlon. According to the poll, 32 per cent of people in Yorkshire plan to cut down on alcohol this Christmas after regretting some of their drunken behaviour from last year’s festive party season. Cancer Research UK is challenging men and women to sign up to Dryathlon now and pledge to banish the booze in January to raise money to help beat cancer sooner. ‘Morning after’ regrets include; inappropriate flirting with colleagues or friends (15 per cent), revealing secrets (14 per cent), losing phones, wallets or keys (7 per cent) and kissing someone under the mistletoe (11 per cent).
The poll also shows that 15 per cent of people in Yorkshire are most likely to feel like never drinking again over the festive period than at any other time of year. Dryathletes can either get sponsored or donate the money they would have spent on alcohol to the charity. Supporters can register as individuals or set up a team and get their friends, family and colleagues involved to motivate each other along the way. And for those who find the thought of four weeks completely off the sauce too daunting, there’s the ‘tipple tax’ which allows the Dryathlete to donate a £20 penalty to compensate for falling off the wagon. One group of people who don’t lack willpower are the world-class Cancer Research UK scientists, doctors and nurses striving to beat cancer sooner. Survival rates for the disease in the UK have doubled over the past 40 years and the charity has been at the heart of that progress. But it needs more funds and more supporters if it is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Cancer Research UK launched Dryathlon for the first time last year and was delighted by its success. More than 33,500 people signed up across the UK and helped raise a fantastic £4 million to help beat cancer.
BURNT TREE HELPS THE CHILDREN OF SHEFFIELD WITH MISSION CHRISTMAS In Sheffield, local radio station Hallam FM is organising ‘Mission Christmas’ this year where they are encouraging local people to buy an extra gift and drop it off at over 300 drop-off points across the South Yorkshire region. Local Burnt Tree vehicle rental branch in Sheffield is helping with the Mission Christmas campaign by
supplying Hallam FM with a Ford Transit LWB van that is being used to collect these presents from the various drop-off locations in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley. According to Louise Davies, charity manager at Hallam FM, “We are so grateful to local companies, such as Burnt Tree, who are helping local kids by supporting Mission Christmas. Without this vehicle, it would be impossible to collect the gifts and Mission Christmas would not happen. Many children will be having a very happy Christmas this year because of Burnt Tree’s generosity.” Last year Mission Christmas, and the grant giving charity Cash for Kids, helped 17,400 children. For 2013, Mission Christmas is

hoping to increase the numbers, by helping over 18,000 children and as Louise Davies commented, “We cannot overstate the importance of Mission Christmas as 1 in 5 children live under the poverty line in South Yorkshire.” Commenting on the involvement with Mission Christmas, Peter Coyne, Burnt Tree’s Branch Rental Manager in Sheffield said, “As soon as Louise approached us, we were more than keen to assist Hallam FM on such a deserving cause. This campaign has grown every year and we are extremely proud to play a valuable role in ensuring that local children have an extremely happy Christmas this year.” Burnt Tree is the UK’s largest independent commercial vehicle rental and contract hire company, offering the widest range of vehicles in the industry, all backed by flexible products that put its customers in control. IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN! CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
How’s the Christmas shopping going? If you are lucky enough to live in Doncaster or visiting the Frenchgate shopping centre there for buy some pressies, you can always pop into the Trades Club for a breather from the madness. Clubs close to shopping centres can capitalize this time of year in the run up to Christmas. At the same time, we can recall Christmas past in our local clubs, wherever they might be or have been. Most people usually remember very clearly the children’s parties, which were a highlight of the club calendar for many. In the immediate post-war period, they may have been in humble wooden huts and tin shacks but it didn’t matter. The kids loved these parties, with sandwiches, pop, trifle and crackers to pull, entertainers, games and a present to collect at the end. Mothers would be on hand to help out and the dad’s probably not too far off having a pint. At the other end of the age range, older people and senior members were treated to a special Christmas meal and concert with free drinks as well as a bit of pocket money to spend. Club committees always set aside funds for these events but few can afford to do so anymore. There were pantomimes in some clubs whilst others took the kids to one nearby. Meanwhile, there would be special concerts for Christmas Eve, perhaps a ticket-only affair and these would quickly sell-out. This was definitely a time to get to your club early as it would get packed out. There was a long night ahead of drinking, socializing and entertainment. Clubs could apply for a bar extension and having an extra hour of drinking time made them additionally attractive. This is where the pubs lost out and also on Christmas day when most were closed. Clubs often opened even if for Sunday hours. It might be the only day of the year some members made it to the club. People could share jokes about who got the daftest Christmas present, sympathize about hangovers from the night before and discuss the size of the turkey. The club was the meeting point for families, friends and neighbours and can still be at this holiday time. Why not use your club this Christmas- it’s probably much easier than venturing into town once you’ve put up your Christmas stocking. Have a happy and peaceful Christmas dear readers!

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
After last my escapades last week, when things didn’t go too well, I thought that things could only get better….. My preparation for my latest fishing session was extensive; I’d covered all my bases with bait and tackle fully intending to do a blog about bread fishing, or more specifically, using some of my favourite Marukyu products to boost my chances of catching on the humble loaf. My krill powder was packed, Crayfish and Sanagi liquid and a recent addition to the catalogue, Credence Marine liquid were ready to go, so I only had to rock up at the fishery and that would be that! So I did, early enough for it still to be dark, early enough to get the peg most suitable, early enough to have time to watch the water for any indications from the warm comfort of my van as I overlooked the pool….early enough to enjoy the peaceful misty morning as the birds began their song….early enough for my phone to bleep as a text arrived…….. Do you need these boots? Or this tackle box? The message from my wife, now some considerable distance away, had me winked at me mockingly…… Surely she was not looking at my muck boots, the ones I would need to negotiate the sticky mire at the waterside, nor could she possibly be wondering if I needed the tackle box I’d carefully packed last night….could she?!? She was……. Frantically scrabbling through the mountain of gear in the back of the van, I realised with sinking heart that I had indeed left my boots beneath the radiator, hoping to warm them
LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS
before I put them on, and that my terminal gear would no doubt still be resting by the back door, ready to be picked up on the way out and that my session, which I had looked forward to all week, wasn’t going to happen….. I had no spare boots, nor any tackle after a much needed clear out of the back of the van, so I was doomed to return home and do what all anglers should do in the situation; sulk….and I’m good at that! So my day, carefully put aside for fishing, was instead spent writing up articles and planning forthcoming features for various media outlets. I found time to tidy things up which had been waiting weeks for completion, so although not completely wasted, it left me wondering how on earth I ever found time to actually go fishing! Outside, the sun was shining, the weather was warm, and I’m sure the fish were crashing over the spots I’d picked to fish, but at least I managed to get some work done, some bits boxed off and clear my mind ready for next time. Tomorrow (or today as you read this) is Friday, so I will be sat by the water watching the tip and hoping it will slowly pull round as I sit in the forecast rain. Hopefully, having packed the van once more, laid out tomorrow’s foul weather gear and fuelled up, I will forget nothing and be able to enjoy a few hours of blissful relaxation, take the required amount of photographs to give me social media ammunition for the following week and perhaps even catch some fish…… and I think I’ll turn my phone off this time……

racing form by Timelord
At the time of writing it looks as though there will be only five races televised on Channel 4 this Saturday. These are four from Ascot (1.50 through to 3.35) and the 2.05 from Haydock. No doubt another will be added later for the purposes of the Scoop 6. At Ascot the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle has a decent look to it if all stand their ground and the Grade 3 Ladbroke Handicap Hurdle looks to be an ultracompetitive race, with resulting difficulty for punters.
3.35 The Ladbroke, (A Handicap Hurdle), Grade 3, 4yo+, 2m: When going through the entries for this it quickly became apparent that it would be a very difficult one to call. There were numerous career-best performances last time out and several that had very good lifetime ratings that had either under-performed or come to grief on their last runs. These factors, when coupled with the progressive form of some of the contenders, lead to a tricky race to solve. Those that had career-best times last time out were: Rolling Star; Moujik Borget; Shotavodka; Alaivan; City Slicker; Chatterbox; and Dell’ Arca. Other notable LTO performances in my system came from: Dunraven Storm; Chris Pea Green; and Willow Saviour. Weight could well be the deciding factor in this result so the lightly-weighted Venetia Williams inmate Moujik Borget gets a narrow vote to come out on top. The reserve list comprises (in order of preference): Rolling Star; Shotavodka; Alaivan; 2.25 Wessex Youth Trust Long Walk Hurdle, City Slicker; Dunraven Storm; Chatterbox; Grade 1, 4yo+, 3m 1f: Chris Pea Green; and Willow Saviour. The times recorded in the Newbury Long Distance Hurdle won by Celestial Hero were Haydock: quite exceptional for the ground conditions in 2.05 One Stop Energy Tommy Whittle my view. Accordingly I reckon that the first Handicap Chase, 4yo+, 0-145, 3m: four home there will dominate the finish here, Based on Tutchec’s race at Carlisle, where he leading to a relatively straightforward choice finished third, Nick Alexander’s Wicklow Lad of Celestial Hero as the most likely winner of should have a sporting chance of success in this. this. His 17 length victory (over Medinas) at From that Carlisle race the winner, Tutchec has Newbury should take some reversing by those gone on to score again and the sixth placed Zaru that finished behind him that day – Medinas, has since also won, giving the form a fairly solid Reve De Sivola and At Fishers Cross. At look to it. The extra distance of this race should Fishers Cross, who has 22 lengths to make up not prove to be a hindrance as the selection has on the selection, is on offer at 11/8 ante-post, won at the trip and, if most stand their ground, with Celestial Hero 9/4, Reve De Sivola 9/1and he should have a relatively light weight to carry. Medinas 16/1.The others look to have plenty The selection also holds an entry for Newcastle to find on my ratings although Grands Crus and Salubrious could be dangerous if putting on Saturday however so check where he runs their best foot forward and Irish raider Mala on the day. Wherever he runs he should have Beach, with decent form in the book, could be a decent chance. The first reserve slot for this race goes to Cedre Bleu followed by: Giorgio unexposed at the trip. Quercus; Loch Ba; No Planning; Solix; and 3.00 Mappin & Webb Silver Cup Handicap Tartak. Donald McCain’s Sydney Paget can also play a part after his last time out success Chase, Listed, 4yo+, 3m: The vote here goes to Hennessy hero Triolo over an extra furlong at this track despite not recording a rating in my system that day. Ascot: 1.50 BGC Partners Handicap Chase, 4yo+, 0-140, 2m 1f: All bar two (Next Sensation (UR) and The Sneezer (PU)) recorded respectable speed figures in their last runs. I still harbour hope that the Carlisle race won by Cloudy Too will turn out to be pretty good form despite those that ran having not so far franked it very well in their subsequent runs. This leads me to select Richard Lee’s Grey Gold for this. He has some decent form in the book and has been given a little longer by his trainer to get over the Carlisle exertions. Most of the others ran well on their most recent outings and are clustered closely together in my assessment of their last runs. The reserve pecking order is: Filbert; Consigliere; Ulck Du Lin; Pendra; Elenika; Tetlami; Wings of Smoke; and Lancetto, although Next Sensation only needs to get round intact to be a danger as well.

D’Alene who won that race with authority and in a career best time in my system. This is a lesser race than the Hennessy and, providing that he has recovered from that race, the selection should hold too many guns for the others. The reserve order is: Houblon Des Obeaux (sixth in the Hennessy); Forest Walker; Cedre Bleu; Poungach; What a Warrior; and Bless the Wings. The remainder did not record ratings on their last runs and are therefore out of the reckoning in my view. Finally, despite having plenty of innate ability, Battle Group disgraced himself by refusing to race at Newbury last time and is accordingly passed over until showing a more tractable nature on the track.

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14
TRAIN WITH THE GAFFER Doncaster Rovers have a unique opportunity for youngsters to take part in one-off training session with the Rovers Manager Paul Dickov at the Keepmoat Stadium. The club have organised the special training session to take place on Monday 16th December 6.30pm to 7.30pm on the astro-turf pitches at the Soccer Centre at the Stadium. The session of open for children aged 7 to 11 years of age (limited spaces available). Children attending the session will be able to show the Rovers gaffer their skills and learn some top training and football from the man himself. This would make a superb early Christmas present for any young Rovers fan. The training session costs £25 per child and places must be pre-booked. Spaces are limited so early booking is advisable. The session also includes a visit from Rovers furry mascot Donny Dog. Children are required to wear shin pads and moulded studs or astro-turf trainers for the training session. Registration at the Soccer Centre reception will be from 6pm onwards on the night with a brief at 6.15pm, anyone wishing to use changing facilities can do so from 6pm onwards.
SECOND HALF WE WERE THE BETTER TEAM “We have seen it (Robinson’s disallowed goal) and Theo is quite clearly a yard on side. “First half was scrappy, we conceded a poor goal and we didn’t really play. The one or two times we did get the ball and strung a few passes together we caused them a few problems. “In the second half although we have lost by three goals we were by far the better team. We played some wonderful stuff and defiantly deserves something from the game. On the flip side of it, if we defend the way we did for the three goals we are going to struggle to win games. “I know this will make me sound daft but I’m more than pleased with the majority of the performance, I thought we were excellent. The way we moved the ball, second half especially limited Leeds to two shots on target, unfortunately for us they fell to their two best players who I feel they should be playing at a higher level. “They were clinical we weren’t clinical enough in both boxes.”

STEVE EVANS POST BRISTOL CITY Rotherham United boss Steve Evans was delighted with the character shown by his side, as they recorded a 2-1 success at Ashton Gate to make it three away wins in succession in League One. Nouha Dicko opened the scoring two minutes in for the visitors, his fourth in Millers colours before Ben Pringle doubled the lead. Bobby Reid netted late in the game for the home side, but Evans’ men held out to provide the perfect response to the two cup exits this week. “I think it was a game of two-halves really,” Evans said after the game. “I think we should have been out of sight by half-time, and nobody in the ground would have been surprised if it had been four or five. But you always know you’re going to have to defend with how Steve sets his teams up and we did that well. They scored a goal and then our goalkeeper had to pull off a great save, but I look at our strike a few minutes before and we should have probably made it 3-0. I’m just glad to be going back up the road with three points. The Millers slipped to defeat in their previous two outings, narrowly missing out on progression to the third round of the FA Cup and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area-final, with Evans being unable to fill a bench in either fixture. However, with the focus back on the league, the Millers got back to winning-ways and cemented their position firmly in the play-off positions. “We’ve showed a bit of character; we lost a couple of cup ties and we might have been under-strength and depleted in some of those games but we’ve got some players back now and we’ve produced a very good performance. I’ve been in this ground when Gary Johnson was the manager and his teams played some excellent football, but what these fans saw in the first half wasn’t too different because I thought some of our football was exceptional.”
REVISED EXIT STRATEGY
Rotherham United have again drawn up plans in conjunction with South Yorkshire Police to try and facilitate the safest possible exit strategy from the ground for all supporters leaving New York Stadium for Saturday’s League One clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers and the New Year’s Day game against Coventry City. At the end of the games against Wolves and Coventry, home fans will be directed towards Don Street whilst away supporters will exit via New York Way leading to Main Street. These restrictions are anticipated to be in place for up to 20 minutes after the final whistle has blown. We would like to thank all supporters for their cooperation and hope everyone enjoys this weekend’s eagerly anticipated game against Wolves.

BLADES DOWN ROBINS MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
Two of United’s smallest players won headers to secure the winning goal in Saturday’s home fixture with Swindon Town. Midway through the second half a nod from Ryan Flynn set up Jose Baxter to score the all-important goal with a looping header. The Blades gave a solid performance in the last home fixture before Christmas to move further away from the League One relegation zone. Chief Clough made three changes to the Blades team - McMahon, White and Murphy all started, Hill and Lappin dropped to the bench, whilst McGinn failed to shake off the knock he suffered in the first half at Cambridge. The management reverted to the favoured 4-4-2 system with McMahon and White in the full-back roles and Flynn and Murphy ahead of them, Coady was Doyle’s partner in central midfield. United dominated the first 15 minutes in terms of possession and created two good chances, despite Swindon looking well-organised defensively. A long-range effort from McMahon struck the arms of goalkeeper Foderingham and then a 20-yard free-kick from Baxter, after he was fouled, looked on target before it was deflected away by Hall.
A number of bizarre referring decisions baffled the players and supporters of both club, preventing the game from flowing as half-time approached. United failed to benefit from a couple of corners and Swindon’s first effort was a blast from Ajose but Long parried away on 38 minutes. Late in the half the Blades almost caused their own downfall. After Baxter gave possession away, Long was forced to save from Mason and moments later, in injurytime, it was the goalkeeper who failed to connect with a pass, inviting pressure, from which Doyle needed to foul Mason and collect a booking. The resulting freekick saw Pritchard’s effort blocked and then Hall hooked a corner onto the roof of the net. The Blades began the second half well and came close to opening the scoring on 51 minutes. Doyle robbed Kasim but Baxter’s shot was parried by Foderingham and Flynn’s follow up was deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Baxter’s inswinger to the back post saw an under-pressure Porter force the ball against a post. From a Murphy cross, Hall deflected wide to prevent Porter getting a shot in and then goalkeeper Foderingham was penalised for timewasting, although United’s free-kick was squandered. However, the Blades were soon ahead. Midway through the second half White’s cross was met at the back post by Flynn and BAXTER cleverly looped his header over Foderingham and into the Kop goal. It was now United’s time to slow down
the play and Clough introduced both Brandy and Hill to the left side, whilst McMahon was booked for a foul on Mason. Coady fired over as the game entered the final ten minutes and soon after Miller replaced the hard-working but tiring Porter. Swindon’s first effort of the second half was a long-range effort from Luongo, which did not trouble Long, whilst a tame shot from Pritchard, moments later, was comfortable for the goalkeeper. Four minutes of added time saw the Blades attempt to keep possession, winding down the clock, whilst Swindon’s Byrne was booked for a dive in the box. Late on, despite the visitors throwing men forward, including their goalkeeper, the Robins were unable to breach the home back line and three welcome points were secured. Blades: Long, White (Hill 77), Maguire, Flynn, Doyle, Porter (Miller 85), Baxter, Collins, Coady, Murphy (Brandy 72), McMahon. Unused: Howard, Taylor, Cuvelier, Lappin. Swindon: Foderingham, N. Thompson (Byrne 52), Luongo, Hall, Mason, Pritchard, McEveley, Kasim (Harley 70), L. Thompson (N’Guessan 74), Ward, Ajose. Unused: Belford, Brango, Elgabas, Gladwin.
JOSE BLADES FIXTURES 2013/14 PRAISED MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk
Nigel Clough reserved a special mention for Saturday’s matchwinner Jose Baxter as he analysed the victory over Mark Cooper’s Swindon Town in further detail. Clough praised the Blades’ workmanlike display that moved his side further away from the bottom four in League One. Of the success, secured by Baxter’s looping header in front of the Kop, the Gaffer remarked: “We didn’t intentionally sit back after the goal, but we had put a lot into the performance in the first hour or so and Swindon then had to come out at us. “A second consecutive clean sheet makes the victory doubly pleasing, especially when we only had a couple of scares which were our own doing. “Given how Swindon play it often becomes more about concentration than anything else, we were sloppy in two instances and it nearly cost us. “On a positive note, I thought Jose (Baxter) was instrumental in our attacking play and we succeed in getting them on the back foot by getting the ball out wide. “At times we were effectively playing 4-2-4 with Jamie (Murphy) and Ryan (Flynn) bombing on to support Ports and Jose. “Jose is really starting to contribute to the team and his two goals have both been crucial to two important victories. “We needed a home win before our two games at Bramall Lane over Christmas, the three points will have given everyone a lift and it was good we could send our fans home happy.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS STING HORNETS MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
The Owls produced a battling and determined performance on Saturday to emerge with three points from the clash with Watford. A first half Connor Wickham free kick was enough to settle matters at Vicarage Road as Wednesday claimed their first win on the road this season. The victory over the Hornets was also the Owls’ first clean sheet of the campaign – a reward that came after a resolute away display. Last season’s play-off finalist went into the clash without a win since midOctober and on the back of four straight defeats on home soil. But out to arrest that run, the Hornets had an early sight of goal when Cristian Battocchio broke free down the right before fizzing a dangerous ball into the middle that had too much pace for Troy Deeney to connect. Watford’s early pressure continued and Marco Cassetti had a golden chance to register the first goal on seven minutes but powered his header over the bar from Sean Murray’s corner. Ikechi Anya fired over another warning shot for Watford after composing himself well from 18 yards but the Hornets were made to pay for those missed chances. Wickham took charge at a set piece from just outside the area and hit a fierce strike over the wall that positively flew past Jonathan Bond in the Hornet’s net. Nyron Nosworthy made a vital last ditch challenge to stop Jacques Maghoma
in his tracks as the Owls threatened to strengthen their grip on the game. Five minutes before the interval, Watford were celebrating what they thought was the equaliser when Anya hit home from Deeney’s feed but the goal was ruled out for an offside call. Still, Watford continued to push for a leveller and looked certain to do so but for a fine double save from Damian Martinez. First Murray struck from outside the area and as Martinez saved, the rebound fell to Anya with the Owls keeper still on the deck, but the Arsenal loanee quickly narrowed the angle and thwarted the Hornets once again. The home side began the second period on the front foot and enjoyed good spells of possession as the game approached the hour mark. Wednesday survived a nervy goalmouth scramble in the 64th minute as Watford pressed for the equaliser but a combination of effective goalkeeping a resolute defending saw the Owls hang on
to their slender lead. There was a sense of frustration amongst the home faithful who watched on as Watford failed to capitalise from promising positions. But with the Owls defending deep and holding on to what they had, it was set to be a nervy five minutes of time added on – as signalled by the fourth official. And Watford almost did find their way through when Fernando Forestieri went clean through on goal but sidefooted wide of the target as Wednesday posted three vital points on the board. Watford: Bond, Bellerin, Battocchio (Forestieri 69), Deeney, Murray, Hall (McGugan 81), Faraoni (Fabbrini 51), Anya, Cassetti, Thorne, Nosworthy Owls: Martinez, Palmer, Roger Johnson, Loovens, Reda Johnson, Lee, Semedo, McPhail (Olofinjana 75), Maghoma (McCabe 88), Helan, Wickham

WE DESERVED THAT MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk
The Owls thoroughly deserved their maiden away victory of the season, said Stuart Gray following the 1-0 win at Watford on Saturday. A stunning free kick from Connor Wickham was the difference between the sides at Vicarage Road, leaving the Owls in sight of leaving the bottom three. And Gray said: “I hope no one up and down the country looks at that as a smash and grab because it wasn’t, I thought we were good value for the win. “We ran out feet into the ground and everyone worked their socks off. That’s the least you can ask and I’m pleased for every one of them. “People say they do it for the manager but first and foremost they do it for themselves and their families. “They have to be able to look at themselves and say they gave everything and they certainly did that today.” The Owls posted their first clean sheet of the campaign to go with the travelling triumph and Gray is delighted those statistics have come into play. He added: “It’s a monkey off the back and obviously that’s a big relief. It’s something that can no longer be brought up before every game but it’s important that we build on this win. “We have two games at home this week against Wigan on Wednesday and Bournemouth on Saturday, so there’s not much time to enjoy the win today because our preparations start straight away for the next one.” The Vicarage Road clash was not without controversy as both Gray and Watford boss Gianfranco Zola felt two key decisions could have gone either way. The Hornets had a Ikechi Anya strike in the first half ruled out for offside, while Wednesday believed they had a strong shout for a penalty when Jacques Maghoma went down beneath a challenge from Nyron Nosworthy. Zola said: “We have seen the video not once but a few times and Anya is definitely onside. But that is the way that things are going for us in front of goal right now.” Of the Owls’ penalty claim, Gray said: “You only have to look at the players’ reactions and they thought it was a penalty. “But sometimes you get the decisions and sometimes you don’t. The The referee makes the decision and we completely respect that.”
