SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FOOD BANKS THIS CHRISTMAS Sheffielders are being urged to support local families in the lead-up to Christmas. Over 100 families in Sheffield have to resort to using one of 16 local food banks every week. Food Banks rely on the generosity of the public in giving nonperishable food that can be made into emergency food parcels for those in need. Councillor Nikki Bond of Sheffield City Council said: “For most of us Christmas is a time of rest, relaxation, celebration and fun but for people who find themselves in crisis during the festive season it can be a time of added stress and additional burdens. “Through this time food banks see an increase in the number of families they support and they are asking for your help to meet this increased demand.” People can donate non-perishable food stuffs at the Town Hall reception. The food bank network will then work together to re-distribute this food to families across the city who are in crisis. People can give as little or as much of any of the following items: • UHT milk (full fat and semi), long-life fruit juice • Tinned meat and meals, e.g. stew, pies, curry • Tinned fruit and vegetables (including potatoes) • Tinned/long-life puddings, custard • Rice, noodles, instant mashed potato • Baby stuff (e.g. food, wipes, nappies, formula etc.) • Tea bags, instant coffee But it is important to ensure that items do not need special storage (such as refrigeration), they are well within their ‘best before’ date, and that they are unopened and are generally in good condition.

Copley’s Column In all the fourteen years of reporting for the Mercury, there has never been an occasion when I have been so repulsed by anything as the accounts of the filthy disgusting behaviour as that of ex Lost Prophets singer Ian Watkins, who this week pleaded guilty to a number of serious assaults against children, some only young babies. The sentence passed down to him of thirty five years imprisonment reflects the seriousness of these offences. The fact that he has shown no remorse says much about this extremely dangerous paedophile. A twenty one year old mother unbelievably pleaded guilty to attempting to rape her baby with Watkins and received in my mind an incredibly lenient sentence of fourteen years and another admitted conspiring with Watkins to rape her own child and received sixteen years. Both these despicable women should each have received an equivalent sentence as that handed out to Watkins. Every decent parent in the country must feel as I do absolute revulsion about these serious crimes, and let us hope that every single day served in prison has them looking over their shoulders for fear of reprisals from other prisoners equally appalled by their conduct. Apparently, Watkins had been on the police radar of not only the police force of South Wales but also Bedfordshire and our own South Yorkshire constabulary. Another emotive this week is the trial of the two cowards accused of murdering soldier Lee Rigby. How these two disgusting human beings have the temerity to enter not guilty pleas is beyond me. As in the case of Watkins, I fervently hope that their co-prisoners exact an appropriate level of revenge for all of us. As we all get geared up for Christmas, I have noticed a strange pattern in the pubs I frequent. Thursday night in the Victoria was quieter than usual despite the entertainment being provided by one of the best acts on the circuit, Rachel Raynor, yet the following night, which is now famously known nationwide as ‘Mad Friday’ sees everyone including your grandma turning out for a major drinking session, which inevitably results in many instances of alcohol

Across

fuelled violence and mayhem. Then Saturday night in many places goes back to being quieter than normal, the only reason for which I can imagine, being a massive over spend on the previous night or post drunkenness hangover and illness. This was evidenced on Saturday night when I attended the Forest Showbar, always a first class night of entertainment and usually rammed to the rafters, and it was little over half full. Notwithstanding, the couple we took with us thoroughly enjoyed the evening and have expressed a wish to make a return in the near future. As this will be my last report before the holidays, I should like to wish all readers of this column a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

THE ARENA Weekly Wit With... LOOKS FORWARD ALBERT SNODGRASS TO 2014

My doctor told me I suffer from synaesthesia. I don’t know what it is, but it sounds cool.

2013 was the Arena’s twenty-second year in showbiz and yet again another memorable season featuring the world’s biggest artiste’s, shows and sporting battles taking place to the back drop of the Arena undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment. Highlights from 2013 saw three instant sell-out shows from the world’s biggest boy band One Direction, plus sell-out gigs from Biffy Clyro, Olly Murs, Girls Aloud, The Script, The Who and Rod Stewart. Making their debuts this year with sell-out performances were Bruno Mars, Example & Jessie J. Meat Loaf also bowed out of touring this year with a Farewell Arena Tour, his 17th and final Sheffield show meant the larger than life rock star had performed to over 150,000 fans at the venue over the last twenty-two years. The biggest surprise of the year came when Michael Buble decided to announce an impromptu concert following technical rehearsals at the venue and in the process became the first artiste in the buildings history to announce, put on sale, then sell-out and perform a concert all within a 72 hour period – then all the profits were donated to two local charities! A number of family shows took place at the Arena this year including Walking With Dinosaurs who brought 20 life-sized dinosaurs, the largest of which was 36 feet tall and 56 feet from nose to tail & weighing in at 1.6 tons and roaming the Arena floor for 9 performances. The smash West End musical We Will Rock You played 5 shows as part of their first ever Arena World Tour. The TV smash Strictly Come Dancing brought its Live Tour back to the Arena as did Disney On Ice, which is the only touring show to have played the venue every year since the building opened in May 1991, that’s over 260 performances seen by over 1.3 million customers. Comedy played another major role in the event calendar with 9 sell-out shows in 2013 from Eddie Izzard, Micky Flanagan & Mrs Brown’s Boys. The Steelers turn the Arena into the House Of Steel every week throughout the ice hockey season and are still one of the most successful ice hockey teams in the country both on and off the ice. Summer of 2013 saw the Arena close its doors for eight weeks with a multi-million pound refurbishment that saw a new roof, all new seating, refurbished toilets & catering stands and behind the scenes improvements and opening up on schedule for the Steelers v Nottingham ice hockey fixture on Sunday 8th September. As part of the investment works the venue’s capacity was increased and Sheffield’s own Arctic Monkey’s broke the Arena ticket sales records selling over 13600 and taking the crown previously held by another Sheffield band, Pulp. So into 2014 and the venue’s first event, as it has been for the past 19 years, is the Indoor Bike Trials with Sheffield hosting the only UK leg of this World series. Closely followed in February by ArenaCross, where the Arena is transformed into an indoor motorbike dirt track with over 4000 tons of dirt laid on the Arena floor. 2014 will be another bumper year of comedy with 9 performances already confirmed - Russell Howard, John Bishop & Lee Evans plus Miranda Hart who will be the first ever female comedian to headline a show at the Arena and is performing 2 nights and Jack Whitehall will be the first ever comedian to play an in the round comedy show at the venue. Another first for the Arena in 2014, in fact a first for the region as The Spanish Riding School of Vienna bring their famous Lipizzaner Stallions for their first appearance in the North of England in their 430 year history. July will be huge year for cycling in Yorkshire and the Tour de France finishes outside the Arena and it is also proposed that the venue will be used by the huge contingent of staff that work on the tour. Concerts already on sale include Kings of Leon, Drake, X Factor, The Wanted, Gary Barlow, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, McBusted and Little Mix. With family shows from the World’s most famous basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters, ice hockey from The Steelers, wrestling from WWE, two nights of Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway show and 7 performances of the Cirque du Soleil production of Dralion. Making a final appearance at the Arena this year will be Torvill & Dean who are bringing their Dancing On Ice show to the Arena for the seventh and final tour, in what will be the 30th anniversary of The Bolero they performed to win their Olympic Gold medal in Sarajevo. With many more shows to be announced over the coming months visit www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk for all the latest announcemets. The Arena is working closely with the council to utilize the grass bowl next to the Arena to provide an additional 800 parking spaces for the venue which it is hoped will be complete by September of this year. General Manager Rob O’Shea says “2013 has really been a momentous year for the venue. Following the refurbishment of the Arena the hall has really been brought back to life and we have had nothing but positive feedback about the new seating. We are currently working on a new layout and hope to announce our first show soon in our 4000 capacity Steel Hall venue within a venue. This coupled with the increased parking are a real positive for the venue and our customers.”

I went for a job at the Royal Mail sorting office yesterday. After the interview I was given a tour of the depot. I asked the guy taking the tour “What’s that machine?” “That’s the Acme 3000 Auto Sorter System. It can sort 150,000 letters an hour and it’s 99.5% accurate. It’s controlled by 12 supercomputers, each of which is 5000 times more powerful than an average desktop PC. It has over 15,000 stateof-the-art optical location identification sensors, contains enough circuit boards to entirely cover the pitch at the new Wembley stadium and it has 200 miles of fibre-optic cable. It cost over £100 million to develop,” he boasted proudly. “What happens to the letters after it’s finished sorting them?” I asked. “We give them to a bloke on a push bike.” There is a nudist convention on in town next week. I might go if I have nothing on. My daughter came in and asked me “dad, does Santa actually exist?” “Of Course he does sweetheart” I said “What would put that idea in to your head?” “Well you’re stuffing your face with the mince pie and milk I left out for him.” I was shocked to see a postman in full uniform making his rounds on a Sunday. I said to him “It’s about time the Royal Mail stepped up and took care of us during the busy holiday season.” “Oh, I’m not on duty,” He replied “I’m just on my way home from last week’s Christmas party.” Last Weekend was ‘Panic Saturday’, where shoppers in Britain spent an estimated 1.8 million pounds per minute. Have we as a nation truly forgotten what Christmas is really about? Getting drunk and watching Bond films on the telly. Great news. My boss told me today I don’t have to come in to work at all over the festive season! Or as he put it, “You’re sacked”. My son asked me if we could have a tree this Christmas. I told him I didn’t want to pay for a tree and that’s that. He wouldn’t stop asking though, every five minutes he wanted to know why we couldn’t have a tree. In the end I grabbed my axe and stormed out of the house. Ten minutes later I returned with an eight foot Christmas tree. “Wow,” said my son. “You cut that down quick.” “Son,” I replied, “I didn’t cut it down, I got it from the local shop.” He looked puzzled and said, “Why did you take the axe then?” “I told you, I didn’t want to pay for a Christmas tree.”

FISH & CHIPS

DARNALL FISHERIES placing a £10 note directly beneath the money bag on tree and say... Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Well it’s here again Christmas time and we never seem to get everything done do we? All of this extra work for just for one day of the year! I am quite organized I have all my presents wrapped, cards posted and Christmas meal planned early this year. I don’t eat meat so it’s Salmon for me and Roast Turkey with all the trimmings for everyone else. The four dogs are having turkey and the even they have individual presents which they love ripping the paper off and are like children running around the house with their squeaky toys! It’s hilarious until around 3pm then the toys are taken off them, and yes they do sulk. Traditionally we then watch the Queens Speech. I personally have a lot of respect for the Queen and think she has been a fantastic role model for this country. Christmas Tree Christmas would not be Christmas with a tree with it’s glittering fairy lights and the Angel on top of the tree, it’s part of the festivies that we take for granted. The admiration of the tree goes back to ancient times when the Romans (who were originally Pagans) would decorate the branches of the trees with a effigies of their Gods in the hope of winning their favours. Modern pagans cast their spells using the Christmas Tree to perform magic for the coming year and I have chosen a few rituals you can try over Christmas. Hopefully they will bring you luck, good health, wealth and happiness in 2014.

“I summon cash at this time of need Its not for longing or greed To keep us safe to pay our way And keep all money worries at bay” Leave the pouch and the £10 note where they are until it gets dark on January 1st 2014 to ensure you have wealth love and happiness in 2014. Make A Wish In Roman times twelve white candles were lit at Yule time for the Sun Gods Ra and Apollo for the twelve months of the year ahead. Place a table with twelve white candles on a table near your tree, write down twelve things you want to happen in 2014. Light your candles one by one and repeat these words.

“I call upon the Sun Gods, born at Yule To weave the magic you do For all the planets you rule Please make all my wishes come true this Yule” Leave the candles lit until you are left with a small stump, once they have cooled place the wax in a saucepan, heat until it becomes melted then leave to cool so it’s pliable. Mound the wax into a ball, thread some green cord through it, then you can stick things into it like cloves or stars.Your wishes will come true next year.

Healing Pine Cones Pine Cones placed on your Christmas tree give off a lovely healing energy .Write the name of a Money Does Grow on Tree loved one in black felt tip on each of your cones. If you want to be in the money next year collect Next light a Green candle next to them, kiss each as many Silver coins as you can and on the first pine cone individually as you say “( insert your day of Yule (December 21st) place them in a see through pouch to show there is money present and loved ones name) may you be blessed with good not hidden away. Also place in the bag the crystals health”, Then place the cones on the tree and let the candle burns down. Tigers Eye, Jade, Pearl, Ruby and Turquiose which are all money boosting crystals.Tie the bag with a green ribbon (the colour to boost cash flow, I hope you a have a very Happy Christmas and I am wearing a turquoise pendant, a jade ring and a prosperous New Year.Thank -You to all the are dressed in green) and hang the bag on the tree people who have contacted me in 2013.

SEASONʼS GREETINGS WITH ALL GOOD WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR FROM ALL AT SHEFFIELD 50 PLUS! ʻSILVER SURFERSʼ LONELINESS IN WINTER URGED TO RENEW OLDER PEOPLE BUS PASS ONLINE WELFARE WARMER Campaigners are victorious as the Court of Appeal upholds a ruling which found that the controversial Work Capability Assessment, the process used to determine whether someone is fit for work, is flawed. Under the present system, claimants moving from Incapacity Benefit, and with mental health problems, autism and learning disabilities, are expected to gather together medical evidence on their health situations themselves with no help from the Department for Works and Pensions.

This potentially severely disadvantages them over other claimants, and increases the likelihood of incorrect decisions. The charities Rethink Mental Illness, Mind and the National Autistic Society intervened in the case to provide evidence based on the experiences of their members and supporters. USEFUL CONTACTS FOR OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON

Transport bosses are urging South Yorkshire’s senior travel pass holders to beat the chill this winter by renewing their pass online. Travel South Yorkshire’s online pass replacement service makes renewing or replacing a senior travel pass when it is due to expire quick and simple, without the need to visit a Travel South Yorkshire Information Centre. Senior passes (also known as English National Concessionary Travel Scheme passes) can be renewed in five simple steps at travelsouthyorkshire.com, within one month of their expiry date, and will be posted to home addresses within ten days. SYPTE Deputy Interim Director General, David Young, said: “Travel South Yorkshire is committed to improving access to our services for all passengers. Our simple online pass replacement service gives customers the option of renewing their senior pass at a time and day that suits them, helping those that are less mobile or want to avoid any unnecessary journeys as the weather turns colder. “We are urging those that know their way around the web to help parents, grandparents or older relatives and friends that don’t use the internet as often by showing them how to renew their pass online.” Senior pass holders from South Yorkshire are entitled to free off peak local bus, tram and train travel within the county from 0900 on weekdays, all day at weekends and on Bank Holidays. Pass holders can also travel to and from West Yorkshire on Northern Rail services. To qualify for a pass, customers need to be a resident of South Yorkshire and of eligible age. All newly supplied senior passes are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Senior passes are issued as credit-card style smartcards, allowing users to scan their pass as they board. The technology, which was first launched for senior passes on Stagecoach buses in March 2012, speeds up boarding times, removes the need for paper tickets, and places ‘silver surfers’ at the forefront of adopting this new technology. English National Concessionary Travel Scheme senior pass holders can also renew their passes by visiting a Travel Information Centre or calling Traveline on 01709 51 51 51. TOUR MAKERS VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME Asda last week announced it’s to become the official partner of the Tour Makers for Yorkshire’s Grand Départ 2014 and Tour de France in the UK. In a first for the famous cycling race, Asda will help with the recruitment, training, feeding and clothing of the Tour Makers, which will be made up of up to 10,000 volunteers across the country. People have one last chance to put themselves forward for consideration before the deadline on the 31st December. Deputy Prime Minister, Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP (Sheffield Hallam), officially launched the partnership in Yorkshire today, alongside Welcome to Yorkshire Bid Ambassador and double Commonwealth gold medal winning cyclist Malcolm Elliott from Sheffield who joined Asda officials and local riders to unfurl a giant one-off Tour Maker shirt to mark the project launch. Asda, which has its roots firmly placed in the county, will work with Welcome to Yorkshire to oversee the training and selection of the volunteers to help deliver the Grand Départ. Asda will also provide the final volunteer force with a Tour Maker uniform exclusively designed by the retailer’s clothing brand George, as well as refreshments

throughout the course of the Grand Départ. Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, said: “You can already sense the buzz and excitement right across the country as we get ever closer to Yorkshire’s Grand Départ – and the launch of the Tour Makers and the public’s response to it already is evidence of that. I would urge anyone interested in this scheme to put their names forward now. The eyes of the world will be on Yorkshire when the peloton sets off from Leeds and spends two days racing around the county before finishing in Sheffield, and then racing from Cambridge to London. It promises to be an historic, spectacular event and really cements our nation as a global sporting leader.” Up to 10,000 volunteering roles are up for grabs during the three days the race is in England. The roles include everything from welcoming international visitors at major transport hubs, to supporting National Park rangers and the emergency services. Cllr Isobel Bowler, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure added: “The Tour Makers will be key to making the Grand Départ a success and so it’s great to hear that so many local people will be able take part.” Anyone interested in volunteering for any of the three stages of the race while it is in England can register at www.letouryorkshire.com/volunteer before December 31.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE LEGENDARY COMEDIAN BILLY PEARCE

Yorkshire’s very own king of the variety show Billy Pearce has been entertaining audiences both locally and on the national stage since the mid-80s. This January Billy returns to our region when he performs at the Best Western Consort Hotel in Thurcroft and they have kindly donated a pair of tickets for us to give away to one lucky reader. Billy, who was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, first came to National prominence when he appeared in Central TV’s top talent show ‘New Faces’, winning his heat and qualifying for the final. His impact was immediate and he was quickly snapped up for stage and TV appearances, culminating with his first series for BBC television, ‘You Gotta Be Joking’. In 1993, Billy was honoured to be chosen to host The Children’s Royal Variety Performance screened by the BBC. His success in this prestigious show can be judged by the fact that he was invited to appear on the same show a year later, which he then followed with a laughter-filled appearance on the Royal Variety Performance. In total, Billy has performed in

Five children’s Royal Variety shows and Three Royal Variety shows. During the mid 1980′s and early 1990s, he appeared on TV shows such as Tonight at the London Palladium, Through the Keyhole, Blankety Blank, Talking Telephone Numbers, and You Bet. When variety fell out of fashion in the 1990s, with the rise of alternative comedy, Billy found a niche in family-friendly panto while keeping the razor-sharp wit needed to entertain adultonly audiences. Many of you will have seen Billy in the clubs and venues around our region, packing out concert rooms and theatres on a regular basis. He is still one of the most popular and endearing comedians ever to come out of Yorkshire and a great night is guarenteed whenever he performs. To win a pair of tickets to Billy’s appearance at the Best Western Consort Hotel on Friday 31st January just send your name and a daytime contact either by email to info@mercurynewspaper. co.uk or through the post to 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG Closing Date 14/1/14

PLEASE SIR CAN I HAVE SOME MORE? The Crucible and it’s artistic director Daniel Evans set the bar high over the Christmas period last year when they staged their own version of the classic musical My Fair Lady, a production that received rave reviews and gained several prestigious award nominations. Looking to build on all of Sheffield Theatres success in 2013 they have this year staged one of the world’s most recognisable musicals in the shape of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! Although the original Charles Dickens tale isn’t set around the festive season the combination of the early Victorian setting and Lionel Bart’s instantly recognisable high energy musical numbers means Oliver! is the ideal show to provide a feel good factor at Christmas. From the opening bars of the show’s first musical number Food Glorious Food the standard is set, as slick, crisp production, visually stunning choreography and a wonderful chorus of child voices turn the Crucible into an early Victorian workhouse. Of course the opening chapter also contains one of the shows most famous scenes when the title character steps forward asking for more of Mr Bumble’s unpalatable gruel and this is when we’re introduce

to Sheffield’s very own stage debutante Jack Skillbeck-Dunn. Jack in currently in Year 7 at King Edward V11 school but has managed to land the lead role in his very first professional production. Although probably very daunting for Jack this seems to have been very clever casting as his sweet singing style and slightly timid delivery suits the character of Oliver Twist perfectly, contrasting brilliantly against the more polished and confident performances from the shows stronger, more confident characters such as Fagin, Artful Dodger and Nancy. Oliver! manages to be incredibly enthralling throughout with wonderfully delivered group numbers in the big musical pieces such as ‘Consider Yourself’ and ‘I’d Do Anything’ interspersed with fine solo performances from Hayley Gallivan as Nancy and the incredibly amusing Tom Edden as the unscrupulous Fagan. Oliver! is receiving high praise from the national press and it’s no surprise as this breathtaking production finishes off a fine year for Sheffield Theatres and provides the perfect heart warming antidote for these cold winter evenings.

IT’S A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

First of all, can I extend our thanks for all the donations of toys and gifts for children across South Yorkshire who would otherwise be going without over the festive season. Thanks to you, there will be more smiles on little faces on the big day. We’ve had some lovely cards and warm wishes sent in to the Breakfast Show as well, including praise for our festive version of Andy Williams’ Most Wonderful Time of Year. Yes, it seems as if our vocals haven’t cracked too many panes of glass. If you would like to hear it, just pop on to @ MagicSouthYorks on Twitter or see the Glenn Pinder show page on Facebook. As we head to the new year, there will be more fun and games on the air, and of course chances to win some amazing prizes. Just lock us in at 990, 1305 and 1548 MW, or on digital radio, or via the internet at magicam.co.uk. There’s our Magic Radio free app too, if you have an iPhone. From Glenn, myself and all the team, once again can we wish you a very happy Christmas for 2013.

Open Studios is a fantastic platform for artists to invite the public to view their work. With Open Studios you will get the chance to demonstrate your talent and, potentially, sell your work. It’s a great opportunity to get your work into the public eye, create good public relations and network. The event has been running annually since 1998, however, Rotherham is noticeably underrepresented. ROAR is hoping to remedy this. There is an opportunity for twelve Rotherham-based artists to be represented by ROAR at Open Studios 2014 showing at four venues in Rotherham Town Centre: Westgate; the Old Market Gallery; The Imperial Buildings and possibly My Space. The event will be happening on the May Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th at 11-5pm) and Trevor x there is a fee of just £30 per artist; a sum that has been dramatically reduced from the actual price of £95 by ROAR. Any artist interested must have evidence of work in progress and be able to discuss the creative process behind their art. For More information log onto to http://rotherhamroar.com/

CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

What will you be drinking over Christmas and New Year? Perhaps just water, if you the designated driver ferrying friends and family around. Most people these days accept that drinking and driving don’t go together. It was the Road Safety Bill, introduced in January 1966, that brought in penalties for being caught driving with over 80mg of alcohol in 100cc of blood. In the following year we were introduced to the breathalyser to test people’s drink levels. Clubs were affected in different ways by the new law, depending on where their club was. Club users who lived near their local, as many on housing estates did, had little to worry about: they could walk or take the bus. Those visiting a few in one night had to find a designated driver who would abstain for a night to drive their mates around. Otherwise it was a taxi fare. This time of year, people tend to indulge in their favourite drinks, something a bit special and clubs would get stocked up accordingly. Drinking fashions and fads have come on gone and what’s behind the counter now is more varied than several decades ago. Breweries from the 1950s started to target women for specific drinks. Babycham ran one of the first successful TV advertising campaigns from the late 1950s to the 60s. ‘Babycham? I’d love a Babycham’, was the catchy advertising slogan. Snowballs were popular and also came with a cherry on a cocktail stick balanced carefully across the top of the foamy glass. Whisky seemed to have a special association with Christmas and New Year, with clear to links to Hogmany celebrations in clubs all over the UK, not just Scotland! We can’t leave out sherry, a drink that seemed only to come out at Christmas time for the ladies, served in special glasses that had to be dusted off for the occasion. Port and lemon was another festive drink for women. Both of these have been repackaged for younger generations and are served in different ways to appeal to wider audiences. Some drinks haven’t fared so well - whatever happened to Moussec, another drink designed for women? In 1971 Moussec targeted the club bar managers through a campaign in the Club Journal. ‘Umpteen million impressionable women are going to be hit over the head by Moussec every way they turn. OK. Right, now you can do something for us—put Moussec on the cold tray—always. It’ll pay you to. MOUSSEC—for girls with expensive tastes.’ Whatever your tipple, enjoy and please stay safe!

PETS

STRAY, ABANDONED & NEGLECTED DOGS & PUPS Always need loving and permanent homes

SHEFFIELD DOG RESCUE Now dealing with stray and abandoned in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire NO DESTRUCTION POLICY

Tel: 07748 620740 KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE AT XMAS In order to keep the Christmas season merry for the whole household the BVA is urging animal-lovers to ensure their home is safe for four-legged friends by following these five simple tips: Protect your pet from poisons – A number of festive treats, such as chocolate, grapes, sweets and liquorice, are toxic to cats and dogs. A traditional Christmas meal may contain turkey bones, onions and garlic in gravy or stuffing and raisins in Christmas pudding, all of which can be fatal if eaten by your pet. Keep decorations out of reach – Ribbons, wrapping paper, baubles, tinsel and tree lights can all prove irresistible to cats and dogs but can be very dangerous if broken, chewed or swallowed. Forget festive food for pets – we all enjoy a richer diet over Christmas but fatty foods and Christmas leftovers shouldn’t be shared with our beloved pets. Give toys not treats – We all want our pets to share the fun and many of us include a gift for our pet on the shopping list. Know where to go – Even with all the care in the world, animal accidents and emergencies can still happen. Make sure you’re prepared by checking your vet’s emergency cover provision and holiday opening hours – or, if you are away from home, use the RCVS’s Find a Vet facility at http://www.findavet.org.uk/ to find a veterinary practice in an emergency.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

Ha! After a couple of pretty poor sessions, I’ve had slightly better luck this week… and I didn’t forget anything! A trip to one of my favourite day ticket venues, Baden Hall Fisheries in Staffordshire saw me sitting by the side of ‘Middle Pool’ which is a water renowned for day ticket carp up to around 20lbs, and a cracking head of silver fish which were to be my intended target. I had a quick chat with the two lads who had raced to beat me to the ‘Best Swim’ (I hate that!) to see if they had seen any fish or were just intent on setting up in the peg they had chosen before even arriving…guess what? They chose their spot on the way to the venue, and, just in case, did the mad dash to drop a bucket in as I drove to the car park! Crackers! So…..I set up a fair distance away, a sharp breeze blowing towards me and proceeded to tackle up both rods with a method feeder. In winter, despite being a popular water, the fish do seem to shy off a lot of bait and I wasn’t sure how much the weekend anglers had put in…and I like fishing the method anyway! Both feeders were baited with a mix of Marukyu groundbaits and some of the superb new Jpelletz, and the hook was adorned with my favourite bait of 2013, Marukyu Credence corn. If you haven’t seen this product yet, it’s getting rave reviews and rightly so; a completely biodegradable alternative to imitation baits, resilient and packed with amino acids and other attractants resulting from a ‘secret’ manufacturing process in Japan! It’s a bait I’ve used extensively since getting the first samples in April and one I have the utmost confidence in. I cast both rods to the edge of the ‘ripple’ about forty yards out and set the bobbins before attending to the required product photography, scenic shots, tackle images and such like which I like to take every time I’m fishing so I always have something to illustrate what I

write about; a top tip if you want to start writing for magazines and websites. I had just put the camera on the tripod when the first indications started; the merry dancing of the light bobbins as fish moved the feeder to dislodge the bait. I love it when it happens, for me it’s one of the most exciting things in fishing as I know that the alarm will soon start squealing and I’ll (hopefully!) have a fish to net! Within seconds, the bobbin smacked the blank and the first of the day’s fish was carefully played to the waiting net. Not a big fish at around 3lbs, but one which set the standard for the remainder of the day which saw me catch steadily. The Credence corn is so resistant to the attentions of smaller fish, I managed to catch a dozen fish on each hair rigged piece before it became too tattered to hook! I finished the day content with my net of quality bream and roach. The lads on the ‘Best Swim’ came round to see what I’d been catching on…. one carp between them seemed scant reward for the epic dash earlier in the day, so perhaps a lesson learned….. don’t pick the peg before you get there!

STEELERS LOSE OUT AGAIN ON THE ROAD Cardiff Devils 5 Sheffield Steelers 1 A three goal burst in the last ten minutes saw Devils skate to a comfortable win in the end over a Steelers side that have now lost their last three on the road. Devils fine home form continues however, with five straight wins in the Big Blue Tent. The opening exchanges saw both sides go close but it was Devils who took the lead at 9.59 on a shorthanded play with Jake Morissette firing past Frank Doyle for what turned out to be the only counter of the period. Early in period two the home side extended their lead when Tomas Kurka scored at 23.47 and despite Steelers still being very much in the game they could not find a way through with Phil Cook in fine form for Devils between the pipes in his home debut. Steelers missed out on a 5 on 3 powerplay

opportunity in the third session but did pull one back shortly afterwards when Drew Fata got his side on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for Steelers their comeback hopes were short lived as Matthew Myers restored Devils two-goal advantage at 51.06. Play became rather chippy after that with Fata having his second fight of the night, this one with Tyson Marsh of Devils. The home side added two goals in 41 seconds with Mac Faulkner at 52.06 and Ben Davies on the powerplay at 52.47. Another scrap ensued between Stefan Meyer of Steelers and Brad Plumpton of Devils but the game was over as a contest and Devils ran out time easily for a moral boosting win over inconsistent Steelers. WE PLAYED WELL BUT GOT NOTHING Rovers Player spoke to Paul Dickov after the defeat to in form Derby County at the iPro Stadium. Paul said; “We are disappointed, forgive me for sounding like a broken record but I thought we played well today but have come away with nothing and conceded three goals. “The defending for the three goals was poor on our part, the second goal came literally seconds after we felt we should have had a penalty. Theo Robinson has to take credit for being honest and staying on his feet. “We know we have a relatively young back four that are a little bit inexperienced but we are working with them all the time and it just seems to be at the minute that when they do make a mistake we seem to concede. We will keep faith with them because it’s who we have got at the minute and we will keep trying to play our football. “The one thing we tried to do at two-nil, we tried to play, keep playing and cause them problems. It’s no conciliation when we hear that we are the best team that have been to a ground who worked them but I would rather be the worse and take some points. “Harry Forrester came on which is fantastic for us, he has shown everybody today that he is not fully fit yet but will be top quality for us. When he came on they could cope with the system and Harry.”

County Senior League Saturday’s fixture list was reduced due to the amount of rainfall we had late last week, leading to a number of postponements. However, Mother Nature did not stop the fun entirely, with 16 games still getting the go-ahead. Premier Division Leaders Oughtibridge WMFC slipped up for the second consecutive week. Last week they lost their first league game against Handsworth, and this week they held to a 2-2 draw by Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves at the Look Local Stadium. Rivals Handsworth took advantage of the slip, winning 3-1 at the Holme Lea Sports round against Everest FC. The win leaves Handsworth seven points behind Oughtibridge with four games spare. Penistone Church are only two points behind Handsworth, following a 6-0 away win over Wombwell Main. Lewis Dickinson starred for Penistone, scoring twice. Penistone have won eight of their last nine league games. An Alex Lill hat-trick inspired Swallownest Miners Welfare to a 5-1 home win over Frecheville. Dave Sills and Tom Crosby were also on score for Swallownest, who climb above Houghton Main and into fourth position. Swinton Athletic made it three wins in four league games, with an eye-catching 3-1 win over Houghton Main at Middlecliffe Lane. Swinton’s prospects were looking suspect a few weeks ago, but their recent good form has seen them rise to third-

Rotherham United boss Steve Evans was left disappointed after seeing his Rotherham United side held to a draw at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Millers were 3-1 ahead when the visitors were awarded a controversial penalty, and the Millers boss was unhappy at the game-changing decision which allowed Wolves back into the game, and eventually grab a third. “We’re disappointed,” said the Millers boss. “Things go against us. There were three major penalty decisions in the game and they all went against us. There’s one after two minutes which is a stonewall penalty, there’s the Wolves one which I’ve seen back and there’s nothing there, and then just after there’s a push on Claude Davis in the back, but we don’t get anything. “I’m delighted with the effort and energy we showed but the game changed with the penalty decision, not that I’m questioning the integrity of the referee Michael Oliver.” Haris Vuckic was the only change to Evans’ team from the convincing victory at Ashton Gate last week and the Millers boss took his performance as a positive from the game, that saw Nouha Dicko claim two more goals and Agard grab his 12th of the season. “I thought he was excellent. We knew that after 65 or 70 minutes his legs would be falling off because he’s not played a lot of football but he was excellent. Some of the touches he showed in the first half were magnificent.”

Division One In what seems a weekly occurrence, Division One slips even more open. This weekend only across the four games in the Division, only two of the top seven won. League leaders Silkstone United lost their second consecutive game, as they were downed 2-1 at the Memorial Ground by Penistone Church Reserves. James Tomlinson and Adam Dewsnap grabbed the goals for Penistone, who now sit only a point outside the top half. Third placed Thorncliffe suffered a 4-2 defeat away against Sheffield Athletic. Veteran Gary Eades scored a hat-trick for Sheffield Athletic, helping them to back-to-back wins for the first time this term. Jubilee Sports were back to winning ways, beating Wickersley 4-2 at Chaucer School. Danny Barnsley, Jordan Livett, Joe McGill and Darren Ancliffe were all on target for Jubilee. The win carries Jubilee into sixth place, only four points off the lead, in what is most open of title races. Joker FC climb into fourth place, with a 3-2 away win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves. The Joker have won five of their last six league games. Division Two Carl Woodhead scored twice to help league leaders North Gawber Colliery to a 3-0 home win over in form Caribbean Sports. North Gawber are now six points clear at the top of the division.

The game at Deepdale has been rearranged... Rotherham United’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Preston North End has been re-arranged. The match at Deepdale was originally pencilled in for Saturday 4th January but due to Preston’s involvement in the FA Cup the match has been moved. The fixture will now take place on Tuesday 4th February, kick off 7.45pm

Ben Gillatt scored the only goal for Bawtry Town at the Keepmoat Stadium, to help them to a 1-0 win over Kiveton Park. Bawtry climb into third place in the table. Sheffield Lane Top recorded their second 4-1 away win in a month. They beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves 4-1 in late November, and on Saturday they notched up the same scoreline against Frecheville Reserves on Saturday. Bramley Sunnyside were held to a 2-2 draw by Maltby Main Reserves at Ruby Cook Playing Fields. U21 Division Millmoor Juniors U21 took the headlines in the U21 Division, registering a 9-0 victory over Bawtry Town U21 at Grange Park. Mused Salem scored four of those goals. North Gawber Colliery U21 went joint on points with leaders Swallownest Miners Welfare U21, after a 3-1 away win over Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21. Meadowhall League There were a number of postponements on Sunday, and sadly only seven games went ahead. Premier Division Here was just one top division, with Crookes hosting The Devonshire. Crookes took the three points, with a 4-2 win. Crookes also won when the two met in the reverse fixture (1-0) back in September. The win takes Crookes to fifth place in the table, but they are joint on points with the third placed Devonshire.

Division One Second placed Hackenthorpe B were beaten at home 2-1 by mid-table HSBC. The loss ends a run of four successive league wins for Hackenthorpe, and they remain thee points off the pace. Jack-in-a-Box climbed to third place, with an impressive 4-1 away win over Packhorse Inn. They are now four points behind leaders High Noon. Jack-in-a-Box have scored four goals in three of their last three league games. Andrew Taylor grabbed a brace for City Taxis, as they held Intake Ball Inn to a 2-2 draw at Warminster Road. Intake Ball Inn won heir first points of the season last week with a 3-2 win over HSBC and this point helps them go joint on points with second-bottom Penistone Church. Division Two Third hosted first place at Handsworth Grange School, with Woodhouse JFC hosting Ridgeway Athletic. An entertaining game ensued, but neither team could be split as the game ended 2-2. Ridgeway remain eight points clear at the summit.. U21 Division Both Ryan Bothamly and Sam Renshaw scored hat-tricks for the Double Top U21 in their 6-2 win over Crosspool U21, as they went into the holiday season on the back of three consecutive league wins. Abbey Lane U21 stretched their unbeaten league run to six games, with a 7-3 win over Hackenthorpe Warriors U21 at Waterthorpe Playing Fields. The win takes Abbey Lane into third position in the table.

BLADES NOW UNBEATEN IN SIX MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades were applauded off by the travelling fans - including a number of Santa’s - despite a goal-less draw at Stevenage. Nigel Clough’s side bossed proceedings throughout, hitting the woodwork on two occasions and continually forcing Stevenage onto the back foot. The Blades are still without a win at the Lamex Stadium but deserved more in this encounter and stretched the unbeaten away record to five. Boss Clough made three changes for the trip south - Hill, McGinn and Miller returned with Flynn, Coady and Murphy dropping to the bench. In the Hertfordshire rain it soon became clear that the Blades were operating with Doyle in a deep-lying midfield role behind White, Baxter and McGinn and Miller was Porter’s partner in attack. United started brightly and got change out of both Stevenage full-backs. Firstly, Maguire’s diagonal pass beat Smith and White’s subsequent cross-shot was flapped at by Day before cannoning off a post. Then, after an Ashton header was wide from a free-kick at the other end, Miller got the better of Freeman but his effort was deflected wide for a corner. Also in the opening ten minutes, Parrett fouled McGinn and although the short

lay-off resulted in McMahon lashing over, the home side were opened up once more. Stevenage, who were facing the wind, responded with long-range, off-target efforts from Tansey and Parrett, whilst Morais picked up the game’s first booking for a foul on McMahon and was let off with a warning when he brought down White moments later. Unsurprisingly, Morais was substituted soon after. United’s dominance continued and although the chances dried up somewhat, Collins went close from a free-kick, McGinn unable to connect with the rebound, and White broke free on the left, again getting the better of his marker, but the loanee fired too high with the overworked Day narrowing the angle. The final decent effort of the first half, though, came from the home side. A throw on their right saw Zoko lose the attentions of White but the pull-back for Burrow was dragged wide. United made a blistering start to the second half, although boss Clough would have been wondering how the scores were still level. On 47 minutes, Doyle and Hill set up a chance and Baxter, after a neat first touch, shot just wide. Within a minute, Baxter was the recipient of a fortunate bounce but his shot smacked a post and Miller was unable to convert the rebound. Also in the early stages of the second period, Porter headed one of numerous corners over the crossbar.

Despite facing the wind after the break, the Blades were still the better side. Miller and Baxter switched roles and both looked dangerous to Stevenage. The former set up the latter on 67 minutes but Baxter lashed wide. Stevenage had to wait until 69 minutes before creating their first effort of the second half but Dunne chipped over with Long off his line. The Blades goalkeeper then had to claw away a deep swirling cross from Zoko. Murphy replaced White for the final 15 minutes but there was a scare for United when Maguire was robbed by Burrow but Zoko’s shot was week. Porter headed wide after a patient buildup paved the way for Doyle’s cross on 85 minutes but despite showing the most endeavour and intent throughout the Blades were unable to leave Stevenage with the full three points the performance deserved - especially after McGinn’s long ranger was wide. Stevenage: Day, Chorley, Ashton, Morais (Jones 24), Burrow, Zoko, Parrett (Dunne 53), Heslop, Freeman, Tansey, Smith. Unused: Arnold, Wedgbury, Haber, Tounkara, Andrade. Blades: Long, White (Murphy 76), Maguire, Hill, Doyle, Porter, Baxter, Miller, McGinn, Collins, McMahon. Unused: Howard, Flynn, Taylor, Coady, Brandy, Lappin.

PROGRESS DELIGHTS CLOUGH MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk

Following Saturday’s point at Stevenage, Nigel Clough is looking for the Blades to ‘kick on’. Of the clash at the Lamex Stadium, Clough heaped praise on his players: “It wasn’t a relegation battle; it was a very entertaining game and a composed performance from us. “We were much more positive and on the front foot, compared to the games at Bristol City and Leyton Orient, but it should have brought us three points, that’s our only disappointment. “We can’t praise the players enough at the moment and it is pleasing to see us moving in the right direction. It has taken time but I am delighted with our progress. “We are looking strong at the back now, but more importantly a threat at the other end. “That performance is how we want to play, both at home and away, because from the first minute we were dominant. “Considering the conditions, it was a excellent game to watch, the officials were good and the pitch was excellent.” Looking ahead, the Gaffer added: “People look at a 0-0 and might wonder why we are so pleased, but on another day we could have won 3-0 or 4-0. “We stood up to Stevenage and didn’t get them any hope of getting into the game. “We are on a great run, now we have two home games to really try and kick on.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 CHERRIES ON TOP MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

First half goals from Matt Ritchie and Lewis Grabban saw Bournemouth take the points from Hillsborough on Saturday. The Owls gave themselves too high a mountain to climb by conceding twice before the interval and despite taking control of much of the contest, the early damage proved decisive. Jacques Maghoma did pull one back late in the game but it was too little too late for the hosts. Following the midweek washout against Wigan, it was all change for Wednesday as injury dictated the absence of Glenn Loovens and Connor Wickham, which meant recalls for Miguel Llera and Jermaine Johnson. Giles Coke was also introduced to the midfield in place of Seyi Olofinjana. And the Owls started brightly, forcing the Cherries on the front foot through the early exchanges. But just as Wednesday appeared to be on the brink of striking first blood, Bournemouth took the lead out of the blue with their first attack. Ritchie advanced on goal from the angle and drilled a low shot part the despairing Martinez into the bottom corner. Andrew Surman then forced a fine save from the young Argentinian with a goalbound effort before the visitors doubled their lead on 27 minutes. Grabban darted down the middle and cut inside to unleash a fierce near-post drive that flew past Martinez and into the Kop

goal. It was hard on the Owls, who had actually enjoyed more of the possession but lacked that creative edge in the final third. But Wednesday needed a response before half time and Nuhiu tested Lee Camp with a glancing header, while Coke slammed wide after making space on the edge of the area. It was much the same as the teams emerged for the second period, with the danger for the Owls the fact that Bournemouth could sit on their lead and hit on the counter. And that is how events transpired as for all their dominance, Wednesday struggled to penetrate the Bournemouth backline. Stuart Gray made a double substitution just past the hour, handing Andelko Savic a debut and thrusting Jeremy Helan into the action. The Owls went on to ask more of the questions – Llera hit narrowly over from

a set piece – before they finally hit gold 11 minutes before the end. Helan swung a deep cross to the back post that Camp could only deflect into the path of Maghoma, who swept home from close range. That triggered a late onslaught from Wednesday and although the ball rarely left the Cherries’ half, the South Coast side weathered the storm and held on for the points. Owls: Martinez, Palmer, Llera, Roger Johnson, Reda Johnson, Lee, Coke, Semedo (Helan 66), Maghoma, Nuhiu (Savic 66), Jermaine Johnson (Mattock 80) Bournemouth: Camp, Francis, Surman (MacDonald 86), Elphick, Arter, Grabban (Pitman 90), Daniels, Fraser (Pugh 72), Ward, Ritchie, O’Kane

MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk

Stuart Gray said the Owls need to address their Jekyll and Hyde nature if they are haul clear of the Championship drop zone. Saturday’s home defeat to Bournemouth saw Wednesday deliver a converse performance when compared to recent displays against Leicester and Watford. And Gray said: “We are a Jekyll and Hyde team at the moment and that is the most disappointing thing. “We prepare the players for the best possible performance but we are so inconsistent at the moment. “I thought we started brightly but heads went down after they scored their first goal. The defending was schoolboy and we won’t win football matches defending like that. “In the end we finished the game the stronger and got a goal back through Jacques but it was too little too late from our point of view.” Problems continue to mount for the Owls as the treatment room is bursting at the seams. Connor Wickham (hamstring) and Glenn Loovens (back) were sidelined for the Bournemouth loss and Atdhe Nuhiu is now another addition. Gray said: “It looks like Atdhe has popped a shoulder and we’ll have to wait and see how bad it is before we play Blackburn on Boxing Day. “It’s the same for Connor, he tweaked a hamstring in the Wigan game and didn’t come through a fitness test on Friday. “Hopefully, he will be OK for Boxing Day. “So we have too many in the treatment room and we need those players back as soon as possible.”
