Copley’s Column As per normal, my last report of the year is about summing up all the major events of the previous year. Notable deaths in the year include popular television personality, David Frost, Oscar winning actress Joan Fontaine, Peter O’Toole, best remembered for starring in Lawrence of Arabia, Irish snooker player, Jackie Rea, rock musician Lou Reed, American heavyweight boxing champion and actor in Rocky V, Tommy Morrison, popular singer of the fifties’ Joan Regan, famous Welsh rugby player and broadcaster, Cliff Morgan, Bernie Nolan, comedian Mel Smith, German legendary goalkeeper Bert Trautmann, royal racehorse trainer, Sir Henry Cecil, American country singer Slim Whitman, Kent and England cricketer Mike Denness, Reg Presley of he Troggs, great train robber, Ronnie Biggs, the wonderful Phil Everley, Paul Walker and two people worthy of the greatest respect, the finest politician in my lifetime, Margaret Thatcher and the iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela. Locally, we lost Paul Shane, worthy of being included in the previous paragraph and one of the nicest men I have ever met, totally humble and proud of his roots, he was my regular breakfast companion and will be sadly missed. We also tragically lost Donna Hartley Olympic athlete and wife of my pal Bobby Knutt. Regular advertisers with the Mercury will remember our leading salesman Stephen Thompson who eventually succumbed after a long illness this year working until the day he died. Stephen was a gentle kindly man and a major participant in the development of the newspaper. We also said goodbye to Dave Peckett, affectionately known as ‘Santa’s little helper’ long-time friend and roadie to Robert King. Dave was a fabulous character and we learned much about this modest man after his passing. Finally, on the subject of great men, I attended this week the funeral of Gary Sinclair’s dad, Roy. The fact that this delightful character had the nickname ‘laughing boy’ sums him up perfectly. Roy was a loving man, totally devoted to his family and to be in his company was a joy to behold. I have also lost two pals, Dave Laver and Steve Cardwell, both taken well before their time. I have nothing good to say about football in Sheffield as both clubs have been abysmal.

Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley are little better and the only shining lights locally are Rotherham and Chesterfield, both having great seasons. Congratulations to Nick Matthew for winning his third World Championship title and local boxing continues to flourish with Kell Brook knocking out Vyacheslav Senchenko at the Motorpoint Arena to earn a shot at the IBF welterweight title and my two good pals Adam Etches and Rod ‘the razor’ Smith continuing to remain unbeaten with Rod winning the Masters middleweight area title. Finally, big thanks to Mucky Pups, of Chesterfield Road, Dronfieldfor a magnificent job grooming my dogs. Wishing all my readers a happy and prosperous New Year.

THE MAN WITH Weekly Wit With... THE GOLDEN VOICE ALBERT RETURNS HOME TO SNODGRASS SHEFFIELD

Sheffield’s very own “Man with the Golden Voice” Paul Carrack plays a huge homecoming gig on Sunday January 19th as he visits the City Hall as part of his huge 2014 UK Tour. Having been the vocalist of Mike and The Mechanics and the voice behind world-wide hits such as How Long by Ace, Squeeze’s Tempted and, of course, the timeless classic The Living Years, Carrack continues to prove himself as one of the hardest working figures in modern music with his enduring solo career. Paul Carrack’s middle name should be prolific. He knows that when you’re on a roll, you don’t take your foot off the gas. That’s why last year he released another outstanding addition to his album catalogue barely a year after the last. ‘Rain Or Shine’ was the swift successor to 2012’s chart album ‘Good Feeling,’ which produced such radio favourites in the title song and ‘Time To Move On.’ It was the latest in Carrack’s line of distinguished solo releases, which since 2000 he’s made for his own Carrack-UK label. The 2013 season was one to remember for Paul and his band, especially after BBC4’s airing of the career documentary ‘The Man With The Golden Voice.’ “We had a real surge of new people coming to see us, and I think that was down to the TV documentary,” he says. “It was the best tour we’ve had, attendance-wise, so hopefully they’ll stick with it.” Even more gratifyingly, the Carrack crowd is quite a mixture. “It’s a cross-section. We’re getting the loyal ones who’ve been there all the time, we’re picking up new ones along the way and getting people coming for the first time,” he observes. “But it seems to be going very well.” Across four decades, countless Carrack performances have quietly made their mark on the collective consciousness, including Ace’s ‘How Long,’ Mike & the Mechanics’ ‘The Living Years,’ ‘Over My Shoulder’ and ‘Silent Running,’ Squeeze’s ‘Tempted’ and solo landmarks like ‘Satisfy My Soul,’ ‘I Live On A Battlefield’ and ‘Eyes Of Blue.’ Not to mention the gems he presented to the Eagles, who made anthems of ‘Love Will Keep Us Alive’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Hear Any More.’ Or recording and performing collaborations with an incredibly eclectic list of legends like Roger Waters, Ringo Starr and B.B. King. His tenure with Mike & the Mechanics contained classic lead vocals on such major hits as ‘The Living Years’ and ‘Over My Shoulder,’ before he found his true independence by setting up Carrack-UK and producing a string of assured albums, containing such landmark songs as ‘Satisfy My Soul,’ ‘I Live On A Battlefield’ and ‘Eyes Of Blue.’ That’s before you even factor in the gems he presented to the Eagles, who made anthems of ‘Love Will Keep Us Alive’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Hear Any More,’ or recording and performing collaborations with legends from Roger Waters to Ringo Starr to B.B. King. This far along the line, Paul Carrack is still at the top of his game and still out there proving it every night. “The options are, get stuck in and do as much as you possibly can, or get fat and lazy,” he says. “I think work’s quite good for you.” Carrack’s solo career really put down firm roots when he set up his own label for the release of ‘Satisfy My Soul’ in 2000. “It was a good move. We didn’t overreach ourselves or go for big, mad promotional budgets, but it’s gradually built into a substantial business. It’s a lot of work, but it’s empowering and liberating. That’s the way to build a career of substance, which is exactly what Paul Carrack has. But then, you need staying power when you’re a lifelong Sheffield Wednesday fan. Tickets for Paul Carrack at the Sheffield City Hall are available online at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk, in person at the City Hall Box Office or on 0114 2 789 789.

My wife was furious this morning when I came home drunk from a party. “You a******e!” she screamed. “Oh that’s it,” I said, “Start on me as soon as I walk through the door.” “What the hell do you expect me to say?” she yelled. I said, “A happy new year would be nice.” We never hear anything from Rick Astley these days. It’s almost like he’s given us up, and let us down. I hit the ground running. There was a power cut at the gym while I was on the treadmill. The met office has issued a warning about the storms hitting Britain but has stressed there is little chance of it causing any disruption to the UK transport system as it’s never worked properly anyway. I was out drinking with my mates at a party last night, when I suddenly looked at my phone and noticed 18 missed calls from my wife. Is she insecure or what? That’s an average of 6 calls a day. My wife said to me, “You only love me because my father left me a million pounds.” “That’s not true,” I replied, “I’d still love you whoever left it to you.” I got an urgent letter from the Inland Revenue today but I threw it in the bin without opening it. It can’t be anything to do with me, I live on the coast. I used to be in a band called Conkers. We had a string of hits. I’ve been having an online affair with the lead singer of 80’s band Soul 2 Soul, but it’s over now. It’s back to wife, back to reality. “So how are you getting on with that strict vegan girlfriend of yours?” Asked my mate. “Is it true she left her kids and husband to move in with you?” “She did, but I was sick of her after a week.” I told him, “so I kicked her out.” “Bloody hell, was she mad?” “Livid, mate.” I told him.. “I had leather shoes on.” I don’t quite understand the issue about the plans for the new High Speed Rail Line. Wouldn’t it be cheaper for current train drivers to put their foot down?

FISH & CHIPS

DARNALL FISHERIES Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

New Year Predictions January the 1st brings a new moon to Capricorn forming a grand cross with Uranus, Mars and Jupiter. The year will kick off with a turbulent period in world affairs and winter floods are extremely likely. Here are my predictions for 2014: • Two royal babies will be born. • There will be two surprise engagements. • A reconciliation of two divorced parents will surprise many people. • There will be two sightings of UFOs that will shock the world. • We will lose two elderly statesmen, one expected and one unexpected. • A fire in the Houses of Parliament will destroy important documents. • Arrests will be made about a cover up concerning Princess Diana. • An elderly comedian will retire from show business. • Nick Clegg will cause a split in the government. • The Hillsborough Inquiry will highlight new problems and arrests will be made. Last year nine of my twelve predictions were correct - not bad! Looking For Love in 2014 Before you go to bed, take some slips of paper and on each write the name of a potential partner. Tuck the paper under your pillow and say the following: ‘My true love come to me in a dream.’ If you have a Rose Quartz crystal place that under your pillow too. That night you will dream of the person you will marry. When you awake, select one of the papers, (no peeping!) and you will have the name of your future husband. Spooky Photo Be sure to check your Christmas photos as it is a time when our deceased friends and relatives are around. The connection is strong from December

21st to January 1st. In the last two months I have done eight psychic readings and during six of the readings a spirit has come through for the client. If your photos do show something, make sure you discount earthly causes. Christmas orbs are often light flares caused by sparkly decorations. Is your birthday on 25th December? If it is you are more likely to be psychic that those born on any other date. You are more likely to see ghosts and spirits. Please contact me for a psychic reading at psychicglynis@talktalk.net or call 07811632353.

PIECING TOGETHER THE WOMEN HISTORY OF SHEFFIELD AND MEDICS IN THE GREAT WAR PENSIONS

A retired doctor is appealing for people across Yorkshire and Derbyshire to share family stories, archives, real life accounts or pictures of their ancestors who were part of the Sheffield medical effort in the First World War. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great War Dr Derek Cullen, a retired Consultant Physician from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, is with the University of Sheffield Medical School, hosting a stirring exhibition about the role of Sheffield doctors during 1914-1918. More than 70,000 sick and wounded soldiers were brought back to Sheffield for treatment during the First World War – resulting in a huge effort from both medical professionals and volunteers. A wealth of material including wonderfully preserved photographs and real life accounts have already been collated by Dr Cullen and a team of medical historians ahead of the exhibition which will be housed at the University’s Medical School from June 2014. “We have already collected a huge amount of intriguing material which really paints a heart wrenching picture of the role of Sheffield doctors, nurses, orderlies, stretcher bearers and chaplains who all played an equally heroic role in the care of the wounded and dying,” said Dr Cullen. “We are particularly interested in those who served in the 3rd West Riding Field Ambulance in France and also the 3rd Northern General Hospital and the Wharncliffe War Hospital which were created for the wounded returning to the city of Sheffield. “The exhibition reveals a fascinating picture of surgeons rotating between service at the front line and civilian practice and conspicuous bravery of newly qualified doctors, one of whom, William Barnsley Allen, was awarded

the Victoria Cross. “It will also bring to life testimonials of medical students who gave up their studies to volunteer to care for the wounded at the front including our first female medical graduate, Lydia Henry, who worked with the Scottish Women’s Hospital in France and was awarded the Croix De Guerre.” A unique aspect of the exhibition will be a bivouac journal called The Lead Swinger which contains penned articles, poems, sketches and cartoons. It was originally produced in manuscript form for members of the Field Ambulance throughout the war and after the War as a souvenir in three volumes. The contents of the journal give an important insight into the determination to bring a modicum of normality into the lulls between the carnage of the battles and also details how the creative arts are important in uplifting human spirits in the most harrowing of circumstances. Dr Cullen added: “The exhibition is open to the public and will run for six months. It will be accompanied by a book recording this heritage and a lecture series. This is intended to show today’s medical students how Sheffield medics responded to the war, which in turn led to advances in medicine from which we benefit today. “We would like to record the service of these doctors and medical volunteers as fully as possible and I really hope people in the Sheffield, Yorkshire and Derbyshire area come forward and share their family archives, personal accounts and pictures of their ancestors.” If you have any archives, photographs or contributions to the exhibition please contact derekcullen@btinternet.com. All items will be treated with great care and returned safely.

HANDS OFF CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO DEFEND UNIVERSAL PENSIONER BENEFITS ‘Hands Off’ is the clear message coming from older people across the UK, as a new nation-wide campaign is launched today defending the need for benefits such as the winter fuel payment and bus pass. The ‘Hands Off’ campaign, which has already been backed by some of the most influential older people’s organisations in the UK, aims to safeguard benefits such as the winter fuel payment, bus pass, free prescriptions and TV licences after the 2015 general election. Following comments made by the main political parties at Westminster indicating these benefits may be under threat, the campaign will emphasise their importance in achieving a decent standard of living for millions of pensioners across the UK, whilst also highlighting the costs and barriers associated with means-testing such benefits. People of all ages are encouraged to sign the online e-petition and to email their local MP via the campaign website at www.handsoff. org.uk. The ‘Hands Off’ campaign is being officially backed by the National Pensioners’ Convention, Age Sector Platform in Northern Ireland, the Welsh Senate of Older People and the Scottish Seniors Alliance. Dot Gibson from the National Pensioners’ Convention said: “The real reason why pensioners need additional benefits such

as the winter fuel allowance and the free bus pass is because our state pension is so poor. Yet despite this, every year older people add an extra £40bn to the economy in taxes, volunteering and unpaid caring. Universal benefits help to keep people active, independent, warm in their homes, healthy and involved in their communities. Removing universal benefits isn’t about saving money or about stopping millionaires from getting a free ride on their local bus – it’s about undermining the welfare state and the principle that services should be available to everyone in retirement. Universal benefits need to be defended not only for today’s pensioners, but for the pensioners of tomorrow as well.” Nixon Armstrong from Age Sector Platform commented: “During the last year, pensioners have felt under constant attack. The myth that older people have escaped any austerity measures is totally groundless, and we will fight to ensure there are no further cuts or means-testing of vital benefits such as the winter fuel payment, bus pass, free prescriptions or TV licences. We call on every individual, regardless of age, to support us in our campaign to ensure these benefits are maintained for pensioners now and in the years to come.” John Vincent from the Welsh Senate of Older People commented: “We are very conscious

SURVEY

The Pensions Advisory Service have launched its latest initiative to help women save for their retirement. Although many women are currently saving for retirement, from our experience helping members of the public, women tend to have lower pensions than men. This is usually due to lower salaries and taking time off work to raise children or care for a relative. To help ensure that the right guidance is provided, they have issued a new leaflet for women and their pensions. In addition, they have also launched a survey to capture the specific areas that affect women the most when it comes to pensions. This will help tailor future guidance provided to women so that it is at its most effective. Women who need help saving for retirement can call the PAS dedicated helpline on 0845 600 0806, use an online web form - http://www. pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk/onlineenquiry or their new web chat tool to talk about their situation with an adviser. To complete the survey and download the leaflet visit: www. pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk/womenand-pensions of the unfair allegations that pensioners are not touched by austerity measures. We obviously are affected in many ways. People who make these allegations seem to conveniently forget that many of today’s pensioners experienced real hardship during the war years and all of us can remember the austerity of the post-war period. Pensioners are tired of feeling like a burden on society; we make a huge contribution and that surely should be recognised?” Agnes McGroarty from the Scottish Seniors Alliance said: “All of the main political parties at Westminster have indicated that universal pensioner benefits may be under threat following the next general election, so we must make our voice heard now. Millionaire pensioners have been used as justification for further cuts or means-testing, but this campaign represents the views of real pensioners who are already struggling to make ends meet.” For more information on the campaign, visit www.handsoff.org.uk. The ‘Hands Off’ campaign is a UK-wide campaign defending the need for universal pensioner benefits. The campaign e-petition can be accessed at: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/49599 A detailed research briefing is available from www.handsoff.org.uk. Click on ‘Research’ The campaign is currently being supported by the National Pensioners’ Convention, Age Sector Platform in Northern Ireland, the Welsh Senate of Older People, the Scottish Seniors Alliance, the Civil Service Pensioners’ Alliance and National Federation of Occupational Pensioners.

PUBS & ECONOMY

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is this week launching their national “Pubs and the Economy” campaign which aims to promote the benefits of pubs to the British economy and encourage more people to use their local during January, which can often be a quiet period for the industry. The UK-wide campaign will feature various pub owners and staff. CAMRA selected pubs from around the UK after being inundated with responses following an email and Facebook request for photos and stories of pub staff. Jonathan Butterfield works behind the bar at the New Inn, Wilsden, and believes pubs are an essential part of any community, “There is no doubt in my mind that villages and small communities can always rely on pubs as a hub for the community. But they can only survive if people continue to use them on a regular basis.” The pub industry employs over half a million people and the pubs and beer industry adds £19 billion a year to the UK economy*, but the lack of trade in the month after the festive season could prove to be the nail in the coffin for struggling pubs up and down the UK – with 26 pubs a week currently closing nationwide.

“Pubs play an important part in the UK economy and need to be protected and supported. The ‘Pubs and the Economy’ campaign does not only call on people to use their locals in January, but also highlights the importance of the pub industry overall and encourages people to support CAMRA’s call for a freeze in Beer Duty in the 2014 budget. This support could play an important role in saving many British pubs.” Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive. CAMRA is calling on the Government to freeze beer duty in the 2014 Budget following the unprecedented 1p cut in 2013 and scrapping of the much hated beer duty escalator – which added 2% above inflation to beer tax year-on-year. To back CAMRA’s call for a freeze in Beer Duty in the 2014 Budget people should contact their local MP and ask for their support. “Alongside contacting their MP and asking for a freeze in Beer Duty, the best way people can help the pub industry is to use their local pub during January. Many of us only visit pubs over Christmas but if we want British pubs, which are such an important part of our economy and way of life, to survive then we need to support our local all year round.” CAMRA has issued free promotional packs to around 7,000 pubs across Britain to help raise the awareness of this important campaign. Included in the packs are posters featuring real pub staff and landlords from around the UK.

READERS

LETTERS

I noticed you were inviting opinions from readers to be published in the Mercury. So, as an act, and a clubland supporter of over 30 years standing I would like to vent my spleen on a subject which is far as I can see is outdated and often damaging to what remains of what was once a vibrant clubland institution. There are basically two types of clubland entertainment acts, which are grouped under the headings of Managed or Freelance acts. The subject I question is that of certain entertainment agencies which persist with managed acts and most damagingly, the inter agency act swap system! For anybody reading this who doesn’t understand the swap system this is how it works an agency will take on an act in what as known as the managed form. This basically means that the agency guarantees to supply the acts with work in return for the acts sole loyalty to that agency. If the agency is unable to supply work to their managed act on a particular date at one of their own venues they will get in touch with another agency and swap acts so as to meet their obligation to get the managed acts work.

ALL CE CERTIFIED AND TESTED IN THE UK

On paper everything seems fine at this point until the realisation sets in that often an unsuitable act has been booked into a venue just to meet the agency’s obligation. On what do I base this accusation? Simple, by being out in the field and keeping my eyes/ears open. On many occasions I have been at a club and heard of horror stories of the previous weeks entertainment which has been totally unsuitable for the club in question. For example, a club who’s audience is largely made up of senior citizens being subjected to a repertoire of Lady GaGa, Pink & Beyonce songs. Equally a venue with a young audience being entertained by a male vocalist singing the song book of Frank Sinatra and Buddy Holly. It’s then realising upon investigation that the agencies of the venues have used the swap system to meet the obligations of their managed acts, putting that in front of supplying the venue with suitable entertainment. The outcome of this being that

audiences leave venues early, sometime never to return! Resulting in another nail being hammered into the coffin of clubland! So, how can this situation be avoided? Simple! Scrap the managed act system altogether, which is favoured by many agencies, and put all acts into one big pool which all agencies can then dip into, making sure that the right type of acts goes to the correct venue. I was recently talking to an agent on this very subject and he fully agreed with me that this is the way forward and how it should be done. However he went on to add that the likelihood of this happening was remote because they are set in their ways and frightened of change. Well as I say this is my view and I’m entitled to it! It would be interesting to see who agrees or disagrees with this subject matter, especially any act or agency who would like to comment. Yours, Joe.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Well I hope you had an amazing Christmas and New Year. We did very well at home for presents and in particular chocolates and sweets, which for once I’m going to struggle getting through due to being laid up with what appeared to be either food poisoning or a nasty tummy bug for a short spell at the end of December. Anyway, we are giving you the chance once more to win a digital radio to start the new year with. You may well have heard so much about the crystal clear quality and the range of facilities in digital technology, and if you don’t have one yet it really is worth trying to pick one up as soon as you can. Myself and Glenn at Breakfast time Monday to Friday are throwing one up for grabs yet again if you can tell us correctly what our ‘Clip around the ear’ mystery noise is. So far putting something on a shelf and the sound of a cello have been ruled out, amongst other guesses, so join us and have a go and you could be one of our first winners of 2014. Simply tune in weekdays at 7.20am or thereabouts and we’ll open the lines on 0114 220 1548, be lucky caller 9 and you’ll be invited to make a guess. If that’s right the radio will come winging your way. It’s that simple! Look forward to talking to you in the morning with news of what’s going on, just great songs and chances to win to start the day. Trevor

NATIONAL UNION OF LABOUR AND SOCIALIST CLUBS CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

The focus of Club Historians interest and work is usually clubs affiliated to the CIU. But we don’t exclude others that lie outside of this national umbrella organisation because they share many features in common, including their historical origins and the way they were established and run. This usually includes being set up for and by the members. The National Union of Labour and Socialist Clubs (NULSC) is another, much smaller, federation of clubs that represents Labour Social Clubs across the UK. Club Historians has heard that this is to merge with the CIU. Its distinctive characteristic was that it was a socialist society and has historically been affiliated to the Labour Party. Many CIU clubs also traditionally had clear leanings towards the Labour Party and openly supported its ideals. At the national level, however, the CIU tried to adopt a neutral stance, being a broad church as far as possible in terms of politics and religion. The NULSC on the other hand wished to show their alliance to the Labour Party when socialism was not the negative term it seems to have become today. Its stated aim was to seek ‘the social advancement and political awareness of its members.” Like the CIU, it provided its members with advocacy and practical support whilst working with the Labour Party and the TUC. It was strongest in the north of the country particularly Lancashire and Merseyside. Society has changed in many way since the NULSC was established and so has the Labour Party with many of the former links to the trade unions being broken. It’s probably not surprising that at present a relatively small number of clubs- around 50, affiliate to the NULSC. Some of these were also affiliated to the WMCIU and the duplication was considered ultimately unnecessary. Some clubs were simply opting to be part of the CIU only. Concern at the changes in the Labour Party itself has also been a factor with more graduates from public school in the Party’s higher echelons than from solid working class or union backgrounds. New Labour is viewed as quite different to the ‘old’ Labour of the pre-Blair era. We wish those NULSC clubs coming into the CIU good luck for the future and would like to hear from any of their members with stories and memories to share.

REVIEW OF 2013

If you could sum 2013 up in one word alone, what would it be? Innovative? Exciting? We’ve got one for you all…fan-bloody-tastic! From local to international festivals, musical landmarks and some of the best albums we’ve ever heard, 2013 has sure as hell put Sheffield on the map as one of the greatest musical cities in the UK. So this is it 2013…an ode to Sheffield…an ode to you. We started off the year saying goodbye to Sheffield’s SOYO Live. Held on Monday nights for over four and a half years, SOYO Live was one of the cities most recognised platforms for upcoming and prosperous live acts. Seeing Alvarez Kings, Violet May, Wet Nuns and Dead Sons all take on its stage within the epicentre of the cities Rockingham Street, SOYO Live represented the steel cities thriving underground live music scene. Early February also saw one of Sheffield’s finest bands embark on possibly one of their biggest tours to date…While She Sleeps. What a year 2013 has been for Sheffield metalcorians While She Sleeps. High off the release of their 2012 debut album “This Is The Six,” While She Sleeps bombarded their way into this year with so much pent up force and energy, nobody could miss them. Early February saw the band take on a huge support slop with the mighty Asking Alexandria, Betraying The Martyr and Motionless In White throughout the length and breadth of the UK. Along with this, the band also secured festival appearances throughout this year, including their biggest show ever to date…Main stage at Leeds and Reading Festival. Opening up the second day of musical mayhem at Leeds Festival 2013, the Sheffield patriots proved to all who doubted them that yes, they do have the skill and no, they wouldn’t fall short of such a huge live performance. With tracks “Seven Hills,” “The North Stands For Nothing” and “Our Courage Our Cancer” littering their forty five minute showcasing, 2013 will forever remain in the hearts and souls of Sheffield’s most prosperous hardcore clan. Other local groups who haven’t failed to plant Sheffield right back on the musical map include that of Bring Me The Horizon. Carrying with them heap loads of determination to succumb to one of the biggest live alternative bands to emerge out of the UK, 2013 saw the release of the bands fourth studio album “Sempiternal.” Landing itself a number two in the UK album chart position back in April

RETURN OF THE REV Preview: Reverend And The Makers Date: 07/03/14 Venue: O2 Academy Sheffield By Kt Evans

What springs to mind when hearing the everfamiliar band name Reverend And The Makers? Sheffield patriotism, the personification of Northern Pride, how about typical Yorkshire lads and lasses, a group so connected to their local roots it seems they would go to the ends of the world to protect their original birthplace… ok maybe we went a tad too far but the main message we’re trying really hard to get across is this…for all that Yorkshire is to you, Sheffield is to Reverend and The Makers. Fact! Shooting to fame in 2007 with the band’s debut album ‘The State Of Things,’ Reverend And The Makers hugely successful release peaked at number five in the UK album charts after selling over 25,000 units in its first week of release. Tracks ‘Heavy Weight Champion Of The World,’ ‘He Said He Loved Me’ and ‘The Machine’ branded The Rev and co. as one of the UK’s most talked about debut groups, achieving international musical recognition across the globe. In 2009 the five piece released their second studio

2013, this not only was a huge advance within this niche field of music but also for the band themselves who worked every hour god sent to produce the soundtrack of the year. “2013 was a real make or break year for us…there was so much pressure to prove ourselves with the album…” reveals Jordan, ex Worship member and now fully fledged face of Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon. 2014 will see Bring Me The Horizon join forces with Of Mice And Men and Letlive on a full US “American Dream Tour.” If you have yet to see the band live yet, we strongly suggest you jump on board the BMTH wagon now! “We will start our new album at some point next year, probably around next Christmas time…we’re more set on touring the album at the moment so we’ll be touring for pretty much all of 2014. We’ve still got so many places to play, but I’ll give you my word we will get stuck into the album towards the latter half of the year.” When recalling how successful Sheffield bands have been, how can we possibly forget the mighty, ridiculously patriotic Arctic Monkeys. From the release of their brand new, hugely anticipated album “AM” back in September to headlining one of the world’s biggest festivals, Glastonbury, it’s amazing to witness how much progress has been made since the release of 2007’s “I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor.” In come intricately woven lyrics, a repertoire full of emotively personal tracks alongside a forever increasing underground vibe. Along with their album, headlining Glastonbury and just generally being their extra cool selves, it’s a proud moment for all Sheffiielders to witness the return of our cities most treasured exports. When it comes to 2013, we can look back at the successful string of festivals we have attended. From Hammerfest all the way in Wales, to Download in Donnington Park, Leeds Fest in Bramham Park along with Sheffield’s city centre extravaganza Tramlines, this year has tantalized the taste buds for anybody who has ever switched on the radio or played their favourite CD. From metalcore, hardcore, dance, electronica, alternative rock to pop, there has been a festival line-up for all. We’ll give our award for the best festival of the year to Download 2013 (because lets be honest, when are we ever going to see the full Slipknot line-up ever again) however Sheffield’s Tramlines once again spoilt us rotten with a weekend we are hardly going to forget in a very long time indeed. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve got rained up, burnt our shoulders and had some of the world’s worst hangovers, but we simply could not and would not change a single moment about 2013. Whatever lies in store for the following year is for us all to speculate, however the challenge lies at producing a year as spectacular as this one…2014, come at us!!! KT Evans album, ‘A French Kiss In The Chaos,’ which following much in the same vein as The State Of Things, allowed for Mcclure to experiment with electronic riffs, huge baseline sections and sweeping rhythmic undertones. Although not reaching the commercial success of the previous, ‘A French Kiss In The Chaos’ snatched the number nineteen position in the UK album charts and along with a string of singles, once again branded Reverend And The Makers back into the limelight of the current music scene. The groups third album ‘@Reverend_Makers’ (“nothing representing the modern times more than the ‘@’ symbol”) according to Mcclure, the release came as a breath of fresh air on 18th June 2012 for the music industry who have undoubtedly been swamped by manufactured and industry selected acts…thank God for The Reverend! Reverend and the Makers are performing at Sheffield’s 02 Academy on 7th March 2014. Doors 7pm. 14+. Check out www.02academysheffield. co.uk for more info.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

New Year, new tactic..... Dropshotting is all the rage at the moment with many anglers having exceptional results on this devastating new ‘secret’ method, so I set out to find out a little bit more about it..... I’m lucky enough to work with Japanese bait giant Marukyu who also have the sister company Ecogear which produces many soft lures that are uniquely designed to incorporate a scent into each lure. It’s an unusual, but effective addition to the baits, and it often triggers a strike when all else fails, especially in murky water where smell alone can be the only way a predator can find the target! Fortunately, Ecogear also ‘do’ a smashing range of small, extremely flexible lure bodies ideal for perch, so a quick call saw me issued with a couple of packs of the Paramax and Grass Minnow M type samples. So what is this fantastic new method all about? In truth, if you haven’t tried it yet, then I think you are missing out; it’s simple, requires minimal tackle and really lets you explore a venue and pick up fish from areas you may not be able to fish effectively with other more accepted techniques. A short lure rod, anyone with a responsive tip will do (although you can obviously buy dedicated

rods) a small fixed spool reel loaded with braid, a short length of fluorocarbon to form a trace, a sharp hook, small weight and a lure or bait. There are variations on the final set up, but the premise is basically the same for all.....simply attach a hook midway down the length of fluorocarbon (use about 4’ for the trace) using a Palomar knot of similar, then attach your trace to your braid using an Albright or other suitable knot, and add a weight at the end; that’s about it! There are specially designed dropshot weights, but you can use a couple of SSG shot instead, and these should be placed on the end of the trace below the hook; how far you set the weight from the hook determines how far off the bottom your lure ‘swims’. The soft lure is then nicked onto the hook, and the rig is cast out as far as required and the weight allowed to touch the lake or river bed. By gently tapping the rod, twitching the tip, or tweaking the braid, the lure can be made to imitate a bait fish as it dances through the water and, as the retrieve is often very slow, this method allows the angler to seek out a likely holding spot and keep the bait in position long enough for it to be taken by a waiting perch! You could substitute the lure for a juicy lobworm or even a prawn, but the ethos is the same; the angler holds the bait in place and by working it effectively, draws a strike! It really is good fun, and as you get used to the method, every single tentative pluck can be felt as fish snap at the bait and catch the fish in a feeding mood, then the strike is awesome! Dropshotting; try it and see for yourself!

Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 0-145, 3m: Mick Channon’s previous course and distance winner Loch Ba gets the nod for this one after finishing a good second to Night Alliance in a pretty fast time over 3 miles at Haydock last time out. The selection is however also entered for the 3.35 at Warwick so may be an absentee. First reserve is Colin Tizzard’s Theatrical Star followed by: Good Order; Benny’s Mist; Niceonefrankie; Giorgio Quercus; Nadiya de la Vega; and Firebird Flyer.

Kempton and Warwick provide this Saturday’s Channel 4 TV action. Sandown was abandoned last Saturday due to the extremely wet weather but the feature race of that meeting, the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle, has now been re-arranged for Kempton this Saturday – let’s hope that the weather doesn’t intervene again. DICKOV IS DISGUSTED

Doncaster manager Paul Dickov speaks to Rovers Player after the 2-3 home defeat to Stevenage. “I’m disgusted with that performance, we put a team out that we felt should have won the game, we didn’t look to pass the ball, we didn’t look to close down and press like we normally do and I usually back the players all the way and come out and defend them after that because it was poor. “The last thing I said to the players before they went out is that in cup games its the team that wants it the most and the most disappointing thing they looked as if they wanted it more today and that is something I will sort out. “They worked harder than us and they won the game and the one thing you have to do in every game is go out there and give everything you have got and then start playing from there, whether it was because it was Stevenage and they were bottom of League One, maybe that crept into it a little bit, but we prepared them well and now no player in there can say they have not had a chance with me in there and it is something that is going to have to change. “You should have the same mentality every game you play and at the minute we are struggling to keep our standards high, mentally more than anything else. People can talk about fitness, tactics and techniques but if you’re not mentally strong enough to keep your standards

high every week then you are going to struggle and we have seen that throughout the season and now the time has come for me to make a few changes. “Every defeat hurts me but I know what the FA Cup means to the fans, to the club and myself and to go out the way we have done today has really disappointed me.”

GAFFER HAILS FIRST JANUARY CAPTURE Rotherham United have completed the loan signing of Bournemouth’s Miles Addison until the end of the season. The move is Steve Evans’ first foray into the market this January, with the former Derby County man linking up with the Millers until the end of the current campaign. “Miles is a young man we tried to sign back in the summer,” Evans told www.themillers.co.uk. “Bournemouth rejected it at that time and I’ve monitored his progress, having watched him in a number of reserve games where he’s done well but been able to break in there. If you look at the two central defenders that are used by Eddie Howe they’re big players. Miles is a young man we first came across at Derby County when he broke into the side around the same time as Ben Pringle. He can play centre back, centre-mid and it was only two years ago that this young man was tipped to make the very top of the game. Between now and the summer we need to refocus him and I’m pleased he’s the first name that’s joined us this window.” A powerhouse who has played both in midfield and at the back, the Millers boss is confident that he will bolster his options with the desired quality. “He’s a big powerful strong lad who will get his head on things. He’s very good technically and what we think we’ve done today by bringing him in is strengthening what we had.” With several players departing on loan or extending loan spells at the end of last week, Evans has reassured supporters that Addison may not be the last new face seen in a red and white shirt this month. “We feel we’re stronger than we were a few weeks ago and we’re looking to strengthen further now. It won’t be a case of hours though, we’ve got a long time left until the end of January.”

NOBLE STAYS ON LOAN David Noble has extended his stay at Cheltenham Town until the end of the season. Noble, who played a part in the Millers’ promotion from League Two last season has been on loan since August and after impressing in Gloucestershire will remain at Whaddon Road until the end of the current campaign. “Cheltenham Town have been trying to complete it for five or six weeks now. David expressed that if it was an option then he wished to stay and Paul Douglas completed negotiations vigorously and so David stays for season. Again, he played a part getting us from League Two and we wish him well at Cheltenham.”

County Senior League The weather had a major say on Saturday’s fixture list, with over half of the games scheduled postponed due to the heavy rain over the last week or so. League Cup Quarter-Finals All the fun was not stopped in the League Cup, as three of the Quarter-Finals survived the bad weather. Sheffield Bankers take the headlines. The Bankers were 4-1 winners at home to North Gawber Colliery of Division Two. A Semi-Final appearance will be more than welcomed for the Bankers who have had a disappointing league campaign thus far, currently sitting bottom of Division One. Houghton Main showed their Premier Division pedigree, dispatching Hallam Reserves 8-0 at Middlecliffe Lane. Ashley Emmett starred for the Barnsley outfit, scoring a hat-trick. Two goals from Lewis Dickinson helped Penistone Church to a 3-1 win over Athersley Recreation Reserves, in the all-Premier Division tie at the Memorial Ground.

Division One Joker FC climb to the summit of Division One, following a 3-0 win over South Kirkby Colliery at Millar’s Walk. They lead by only a point though, as Silkstone United moved into second. Silkstone ended a three game losing streak in style, beating Davy FC 6-1 at home. Jamie Dixon proved to be the difference for Silkstone, scoring a hat-trick. Matt Turner scored twice to inspire Jubilee Sports to a 3-1 away win over mid-table Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Jubilee sit in fourth place in the table, only five points off the lead with three games spare. Sheffield Athletic stretched their unbeaten league run to four matches, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Warminster Road against Wickersley. BLADES CAUSE BIG CUP UPSET AT VILLA MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades deservedly knocked out Premier League opposition to beat Aston Villa on Saturday. With around 6,000 Blades fans in attendance, goals from Scottish duo Jamie Murphy and Ryan Flynn secured a prestigious FA Cup third round win. On a momentus day, United’s players were given a rousing reception from the travelling contingent at the final whistle, rightly so. Clough opted for an attacking, positive line-up at Villa Park. Wingers Murphy and Flynn both started, whilst Porter, McGinn and Baxter were all fit, despite picking up ankle problems in midweek. Murphy replacing Coady was the only change to the team that started at Walsall and on the bench was 16-year-old Sheffielder Calvert-Lewin, who took the place of Lappin. For Villa, former Blade Lowton started whilst there was a late change to the home team with Tonev, originally named on the teamsheet as a substitute, taking over from Baker. United lined up with a 4-4-2 formation, whilst it appeared that Villa’s late alteration forced Lowton into a central defensive berth. With the Blades fans in good voice, the visitors started well, although chances

at both ends were non-existent early on. Collins intervened when Weimann attempted to slip Benteke through but United’s experienced defender was booked for a challenge on Albrighton on 12 minutes. The first opportunity brought a goal and it went United’s way - and Clough’s team selection was pivotal. After combining with Baxter, MURPHY cut in from the left and his shot took a telling deflection off Westwood to beat goalkeeper Steer. More fortune followed for the Blades two minutes later when Tonev’s goalbound shot hit Weimann, whilst Murphy went after a second when he cut in again following a crossfield ball from McGinn, but this time the goalscorer fired wide. Tonev shot wide after McMahon’s clearance was blocked by Benteke just after the half hour but the Blades were causing problems for the Premier League side. Clark was booked for an off-the-ball clash which left Porter blooded and after Maguire got the better of Benteke, a break resulted in Lowton having to cut out a Murphy cross which was destined for Porter. As half-time approached Benteke headed wide two crosses from Albrighton and it was the travelling fans who were applauding off their team at the interval. United kicked off the second half with two shots from Flynn, both of which needed saving by Steer, and at the other end Long had to be alert to push away a mis-hit Albrighton cross. Just after the hour, with the Villa fans getting increasingly agitated, another Flynn effort was parried by Steer and then Porter shot wide after Flynn’s neat pass. As the referee’s watch ticked around

to 70 minutes, United’s disciplined performance - epitomised by the work-rate of skipper Doyle - continued although it needed a McMahon challenge on Benteke to stop the striker getting a clean shot Long. However, Villa’s attacks were getting more frequent and after there was penalty shout for Maguire’s challenge on Benteke, Weimann’s shot was deflected to substitute HELENIUS, who slid home a first time shot. There was a chance for United to hit straight back but after another lay off from Baxter, Porter fired over and then Flynn shot across goal. With ten minutes left Coady replaced Baxter and soon after the Blades were celebrating again. FLYNN had been a threat to Villa all day but he saved his best until the last ten minutes - he battled to keep possession on the edge of the box and after cutting in from the right, he curled, left-footed, into the top corner. As time ran down Doyle raced back 50 yards to stop Benteke getting an effort on goal, whilst four minutes of injury-time was announced. Young defender Kennedy replaced Porter late on and Miller took over from Murphy. Deep, deep into injury time, Weimann and Benteke went close and Long was booked for timewasting before referee Coote blew the final whistle to secure a tremendous and deserved victory. Blades: Long, Maguire, Hill, Flynn, Doyle, Porter (Kennedy 90), Baxter (Coady 80), McGinn, Collins, Murphy (Miller 90), McMahon. Unused: Howard, Cuvelier, Brandy, Calvert-Lewin.

DEDICATED TO THE FANS MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough says he sensed his players believed a cup upset was on the cards more than 24 hours prior to the fantastic 2-1 success at Villa Park on Saturday. Despite the hectic festive schedule, which ended in defeat at Walsall on New Year’s Day, Clough has revealed the players trained with a real spring in their step at St George’s Park en route to Aston Villa. The Gaffer remarked: “The training on Friday afternoon showed me the boys fancied causing an upset and they didn’t disappoint. “As a team we have to use the confidence this result will bring for the rest of the season.” The Blades boss dedicated the weekend’s win to more than 5,500 Unitedites that vocally backed the team throughout against Paul Lambert’s Villa, adding: “The supporters were terrific, as they have been all season, despite not having much to cheer for a number of weeks. “This result is definitely for them. On Saturday, from the first minute to the last, they backed the lads and it is an old cliché, but they made the difference. “In the dressing-room the lads were saying that even when you are running on empty, support like that means you find that extra ounce of energy to chase the ball and close down the opposition. “For me I am just happy we have given them a day to remember, we hope it is the first of many.” Clough also reserved a special word for his young centre-half: “Let’s not forget Harry Maguire is still only 20, so what a fantastic experience for him to play at Villa Park and show he can handle someone like Christian Benteke, but, in truth, we didn’t have anybody who wasn’t at their best on the day.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS IN THE OWLS PEGGED BACK HAT MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday and Macclesfield will meet again in the FA Cup at Hillsborough with the third round clash finishing 1-1 at Moss Rose. Reda Johnson’s first half header gave Wednesday the lead but the Silkmen battled back to level after the break through Steve Willilams, who poked the ball home into the bottom corner. A draw and replay in S6 was probably a fair result on the balance of play with both sides contributing to a lively and entertaining cup clash. Going into the tie, 63 places separated the Owls from their Skrill Premier opponents Macclesfield. But the FA Cup third round clash was going to be anything but academic for Wednesday with the Silkmen in good form on the back of four straight wins and unbeaten in 12 on home soil. And while the opening exchanges were largely controlled by Wednesday, the visitors had an early scare when Joe Connor’s header was cleared off the line by Liam Palmer from a corner. But just as Macclesfield began to edge their way into the game, the Owls gained the advantage midway through the first half. Stephen McPhail delivered the corner from the left and Reda Johnson pounced in the middle with a bullet header into the net. Wednesday’s tails were up and Jose Semedo almost made it two on the half hour mark but was denied by an

outstanding piece of goalkeeping from Rhys Taylor. The momentum remained with Stuart Gray’s side as the second half began, with Wednesday bossing possession - albeit without creating anything clear cut, with a long range strike from McPhail the only effort of note. But with the score at 1-0, the Silkmen were still well in the game and came close twice within a minute. Firstly, Holroyd saw his goal-bound header cleared away from danger before Scott Boden was sent through on goal but was denied at the last by a well-timed Miguel Llera challenge. But back came the Owls at the other end and Jeremy Helan had a good chance to put clear daylight between the two teams. The ex-Manchester City man controlled in the area and thumped powerfully on

target but Taylor made another smart save, beating away the strike. A half clearance by Llera then gave the home side a sight at goal, as the ball fell kindly for Danny Whitaker, who hit a firm half volley on target but Damain Martinez did superbly well to tip over the bar. The Arsenal loanee, though, was powerless to stop Williams from grabbing the equaliser on 74 minutes, when the defender nipped in from a cross on the right and stabbed home into the bottom corner. The goal gave the home side and support a huge boost heading into the final stages of the game but that was the end of action in front of a capacity crowd at Moss Rose, with both sides set to get another crack at reaching the fourth round at Hillsborough.

MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk

While disappointed with the outcome of the game, Stuart Gray is pleased nonetheless to be in the hat for round four of the FA Cup. The Owls and Macclesfield must lock horns again following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Moss Rose after Steve Williams’ second half strike cancelled out Reda Johnson’s opener before the break. While Wednesday bossed the first half, the home side followed suit in the second 45 to earn a second bite of the cherry. Gray said: “I was pleased with the way that we played in the first half. We started very well, bossed the game and got our noses in front. “The disappointing thing is that we didn’t build on that and in the last ten minutes we could have lost the game. “We gave away too many free kicks, we didn’t pass the ball as well and credit to Macclesfield because they fought their way back into the game. “But this is the FA Cup and the most important thing is that we are in the hat for the next round. “The lads are disappointed in the dressing room because having scored the first goal, we should have won the game. “Their crowd was up for it when they scored and suddenly our keeper was busier than theirs. “But as I say, the important thing was that we came to a difficult ground and didn’t get beaten.” * The replay will take place next Tuesday, 14 January, at Hillsborough (7.45pm).

The in-form hitman has fired seven goals in nine games for Wednesday since returning on loan from Sunderland. During December, Wickham made four appearances for the Owls – scoring four times. The 20 year-old hit a brace against current Championship leaders Leicester to claim three points at Hillsborough in the 2-1 win. The striker went on to score a crucial goal in the trip to Watford, blasting home a first half free kick as Wednesday registered a 1-0 success at Vicarage Road. And Wickham rounded off the month with an equaliser at The Valley in the Sunday clash with Charlton.
