This is the maximum number that could be delivered with the match funding likely to be available and will partially offset some of the housing stock losses from Right to Buy. It is also intended to begin a planned replacement programme of kitchens, bathrooms, double glazing and door renewal in homes that have not had this

work carried out over the last 10 years. This includes a commitment to tackle properties that were not improved under the Decent Homes programme by 2017. From 2015, any home which missed any work will be refurbished within 12 months of a new tenant taking on the property. The programme will cover around 7,000 of the 12,790 properties still requiring some work by 2018 and will be funded from existing resources in the programme as well as an anticipated underspend from the Decent Homes programme. commitment to extend the refurbishment of communal areas to all 12,000 low rise flats and begin feasibility and design work on the communal areas to 3,000 maisonettes. It is intended to make flats more sustainable and a more attractive proposition to residents wishing to downsize. This will be funded by making a slower start to some lower priority elements of the investment programme over the next five years. Council house rents in Sheffield are set to rise by an average of 6.2 per cent from April in line with the Government's Social Rent Policy. The increase is equivalent to an average weekly rise of £4.31.

Copley’s Column

I was pleased to receive a visit from my good pal, Steve Birks, aka Vincent, aka Neirly Diamond prior to his gig in Chesterfield on Saturday. Steve is of course a member of the extremely talented Birks family with brother Tony, a member of Johnny Calendar’s band in the sixties and his sons Andy and Mick both being excellent singers, as well as promoting the annual Birkfest ,in the grounds of Tony’s home in Middle Hanley which raises thousands of pounds for charity. We now have another generation of entertainers with Steve’s grandchildren, Connor aged three and Kassia aged seven performing in Aladdin the pantomime at the Montgomery Theatre in Surrey Street. The show runs from January 22nd to 25th at 7.30 p.m. with a Saturday matinee. This will be a great family night out with a hilarious script and many well-known songs. This will be Connor’s stage debut, bless him, following in granddad’s footsteps. Their mum Danni, Steve’s lovely daughter, I am sure will feel justifiably proud. A top judge has spoken out on a subject dear to my heart this week. I have many times in this column raved about the unfair treatment fathers receive in the family courts with regard to proper contact with their children, and the total ineptitude of social services. His honour, I am proud to call him that, Justice Coleridge has opined that mothers who deny separated fathers proper access to their children should have them taken away from them, and handed over to the full time care of the father, on a three strikes and you are out basis. He states that mothers, who use the children as weapons in a war against their dads totally ignore judgements passed in the family court in the full knowledge that the judiciary are reluctant to imprison them to save suffering for the children. In an open debate on social network facebook, the subject of abusive fathers was raised. This is beyond ridiculous as the number is less than one per cent and would be highlighted at the court hearing. Children have a right to equal access to both parents irrespective of the state of the relationship between parents. I agree with a comment I read that the entire family courts system needs to be done away with and replaced by open hearings with no reporting restrictions. Dronfield lost a great man this week, Mick

Emmens, former mayor and owner of the Yellow Lion in Apperknowle. Mick was a great giver to the local community, being a first responder and fundraiser for charity and will be sadly missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his widow Joyce, daughter Michelle and the rest of the family. The funeral servicewill be held at 2p.m. on the 21st of January at St. John the Baptist Church, Dronfield. In an effort to go out on a happy note, I would like to heap praise on my beloved Sheffield Wednesday who thrashed an admittedly poor Leeds side six nil on Saturday really making my weekend. I am also looking forward to seeing international singing star Diana Edwards who is appearing at the Victoria Inn, Dronfield this Thursday 16th January.

THAT’S MAGIC!

One of the UK’s favourite entertainers, Paul Daniels, will be packing up his box of tricks for what could be the very last time… well, one of the very many last times, we hope… in a magically mammoth national ‘first farewell’ tour, making an appearance at the Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield on Thursday 23rd January. From the moment he burst onto our screens, Paul’s magic shows have topped the ratings and he undoubtedly became the most successful TV magician of the 20th century and, by carrying on the ‘fame game’ into the 21st century, became a true magical legend. From September, Paul will be travelling the nation with a brand new show full of his old favorite magic tricks and a number of new tricks never performed in public before. He will, of course, be joined by the very lovely Debbie McGee, and their last live show, Hair Today Gone Tomorrow, garnered critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival and countrywide. From Legend to Leg End will no doubt be yet another enchanted evening of incredible illusion, comedy and amazement. Because… that’s magic! Whilst on holiday at the age of 11, Paul read a book on ‘How to Entertain at Parties’ and since then he has been entertaining the masses, from tricks for his fellow servicemen during his national service to audiences in their millions on prime time TV. Opportunity literally Knocked in 1970 when Paul was spotted by a TV producer and he was soon hosting his own show The Paul Daniels Show (BBC1) with his future wife Debbie McGee for 15 years. Paul became a magical star and hosted a number of other television series from Odd One Out, Every Second Counts, Wipeout, and the ever popular and fondly remembered Wizbit, all for the BBC. In recent years, Paul appeared on Da Ali G Show (Channel 4), Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV) and Strictly Come Dancing (BBC) and alongside Debbie on cult TV show When Louis Met…presented by Louis Theroux (BBC2), Wife Swap (Channel 4), The Farm (Channel 5), and The X Factor: Battle of the Stars (ITV). With a reputation as one of the most popular men in show-business, Paul has entertained the likes of Prince William, Prince Harry, The Sultan of Brunei, The Sultan of Oman, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Barry White, John Major and countless others. His Radio 2 show Dealing with Daniels ran for 6 months and Paul performed at the Prince of Wales Theatre in the heart of the West End in his own show It’s Magic, one of the longest-running magic shows ever staged in London. He has also designed special effects for stage and screen including Cats, Phantom of the Opera, the Nutcracker and Hollywood movie Return to Oz. He has also developed a career in motivational speaking which aids business men and women in their speeches and presentations. Feted around the world, Paul Daniels is the only magician to receive ALL the top awards of the famed London Magic Circle, and even New York and Hollywood have honoured his magical achievements. Paul & Debbie will be appaearing at the Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield on Thursday the 23rd of January. I was sat watching the TV with my dad when I asked him who Sherlock’s assistant was. “Watson.” “Who’s Sherlock’s assistant?” My mate Paddy just told me that he robbed a shop last night. “What did you get?” I asked. “26 pictures,” he smiled, showing me. “The cheapest one is worth over £180,000.” I said, “Dude, these are from an estate agents.” I hate it when a player gets a kick and starts rolling about the floor as if he’s been shot. Mercury Beauty Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Magical Connections to February For most of us February means shorter days, longer nights and cold temperatures. Our ancestors coped with the dead of winter by hunkering down near a blazing fire and conserving their energy. They got up later, went to bed earlier and generally did less. However, in modern society we often push ourselves to the limit and end up with burnout. After the chaos of Christmas and the New Year, February is the perfect time to reflect on the previous year and begin making plans for the future. Don’t forget to keep in touch with your spiritual side too. Many of us take spirituality for granted and only call upon the universe when we are in trouble and want help. We rarely just say ‘thank you’. You can make a deep connection with the angels by thanking them, as I do, for looking after family and friends. Find a quiet time when you can speak to the angels from your heart and perhaps ask that they guide and protect you. It is always good to have some crystals around you. One of my favourite crystals is Lodalite. Lodalite Crystal Lodalite is a purple stone of guidance and the stone of dreamers. This stone can change the way you think. It asks that you keep faith with those you have banished. It is a good crystal to keep in the garden as it will attract both wildlife and nature spirits. If you believe in nature spirits, as I do, look closely for them. Next time you are in woodland look carefully at the trees and foliage and you may be able to make out a face in the leaves or in the bark of the trees. I have to admit that I have been known to hug a few trees and have received some funny looks, but that’s just me! If you need some inspiration gaze into the Lodalite and let it take you to another plane. Wear the stone in bed and sure enough you will have vivid dreams. Our dearly beloved relatives that have passed over often come to us in dreams and give us special messages.

Otter - February’s animal is an otter. You are usually very tolerant of others and can see the other person’s point of view. I say never get into an argument with an otter person as you won’t win. You fight for your own beliefs and also for the beliefs of others, even if you don’t always agree with what they are saying. You are inspired by great causes and want to be involved. You are a trendsetter, as whatever you choose to do, people will follow. Primus Flower This little Primrose will bring a positive change to your life. It offers a better connection to your children. Place a plant in your child’s bedroom as the Primrose can help both sensitive children and adults to balance their energy. The Planet Uranus This planet was discovered by the astronomer, William Herschel, in 1781. Astronomers discovered that the planet has narrow dark rings surrounding it and it also has five large moons including Miranda, Titania, Oberon, Umbriel, and Ariel - you will note the last two moons are the names of angels. Uranus is the name of the most ancient of the Roman gods. At the moment I am not doing 121 readings. I am just doing postal readings until after I have had my operation. NEWS & INFORMATION

Extension for library business plans

Volunteers interested in running local libraries are being given a further helping hand after council leaders decided to extend the time for them to submit proposals. The consultation for the library review is set to finish this week, on Friday January 10 as planned. Sheffield City Council leaders have offered to extend the deadline for initial business plans to be submitted to the council until January 24. This is a direct result of local groups telling the council they can come up with viable proposals if they were given a couple more weeks. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Inclusion said: “I am pleased to say that a number of organisations have told us they have plans they want to submit to run their local libraries. “A number of groups have told us they just need a few more weeks to get their initial business plans together and we appreciate that. That is why we have listened to their concerns and acted on them by extending the deadline. “We want to keep as many local libraries open as possible. We don’t want to see any library close at all. But because of this Government’s devastating funding cuts have left us with little choice but to ask people to step up and take over the running of their local libraries if they wish to see them remain open.” Sheffield City Council has already offered help and advice to local groups who would like to run their local library. This is part of the proposals to keep a comprehensive library service of 12 libraries open in the city. The proposal suggests that a further five would be given funding to be community-led libraries in addition to the core service. The rest would be available to groups to run independently, should enough interest be generated. These plans are currently out for consultation until this Friday, January 10. This will give time for council leaders to take on board all views submitted before making an informed decision at Cabinet next month. Since releasing initial proposals, the Council has seen interest from various groups wanting to take on libraries. A series of workshops to give interested groups further information and support in developing a business plan have taken place. This included detailed advice and information about how groups can run their local library such as how they can manage volunteers and how to deal with book loans and what responsibilities they will have for managing the building. Local people interested in running their library have been encouraged to submit a business plan to the council as part of the on-going consultation. People still have a few more days to complete an online questionnaire or drop into their local library to take part in the consultation at: www. sheffield.gov.uk/libraryreview. If initial business plans are successful (subject to the decision which will be taken by Cabinet in the next month or two), they will have until the end of June 2014 to complete a full business plan.

SHEFFIELD’S EVENTS STEP UP A GEAR THANKS TO TOUR DE FRANCE Sheffield will be hosting more than 80 major sporting, cultural, community and children’s events next year including the incredible 2014 Tour de France which will ensure the city is headline news throughout the country. Sheffield City Council will be teaming up with sports clubs and governing bodies, national charities, musicians, children’s entertainers, businesses and organisations for an exciting programme of events planned for 2014. The city’s major events programme has been designed to ensure Sheffield remains one of the country’s top places to live and visit for business, cultural and sporting opportunities such as the Tour de France, music festival Tramlines, literary festival Off The Shelf and sporting events spanning snooker, athletics, climbing, swimming and ice skating. Isobel Bowler, Cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield has always been an exciting hub of cultural and sporting activity and we hope to build on the fantastic range of events we have hosted and helped to bring to the city in 2013 again next year. “We are incredibly excited to be hosting the finish of the second stage of the Tour de France on 6 July. More than 250,000 people are expected to watch the event on Sheffield streets and hundreds more local people will be volunteering as Tour Makers. Across the Yorkshire region there will be a number of large scale participation cycle rides and a 100 day cultural festival with further events taking place in the city during that time. “But we also have a fantastic range of other events planned for 2014 which we hope will inspire youngsters and adults alike to try out a new sport, attempt a fun run or half marathon for charity, listen to new bands playing live or to support a community event.” The council’s major events programme for 2014 includes the Combined Indoor Athletics International Match at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield in January and the British Adult Ice Skating Championships at iceSheffield in February. Fundraisers can pull on their running shoes to take part in the Sport Relief Mile and Age UK Wrap Up And Run fun run in March followed by the Sheffield Half Marathon at Don Valley Bowl and the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival in April. In April and May, the World Snooker Championship returns to The Crucible for the 37th year. Ponds Forge will be hosting the British Gas Synchronised Swimming Championships also in April. Sheffield’s Food Festival moves to a new date, taking place on Spring Bank Holiday weekend, between 24 and 26 May.

In June the Royal Horticultural Society will be encouraging green-fingered gardeners to attend the Garden Up event at the Botanical Gardens. The event, inspired by the Chelsea Flower Show, will showcase talents from the worlds of horticulture, architecture, landscaping and design. June will also see the return of the Sheffield Children’s Festival, Sheffield Pride on Devonshire Green and the streets will turn pink with thousands of women dressed up in the Cancer Research Race for Life. Music fans can see lots of local bands and a community stage at the long standing Sharrow festival. It will be a fun packed summer in Sheffield with the world’s best cyclists participating in the Tour de France, Tramlines in July followed by a host of community events taking place across Sheffield including the Chapeltown Gala, Ruskin Park Fun Day, gala days in Dore and Stannington and a Macmillan family fun day at Millhouses Park. The August bank holiday will see Sheffield Fayre return to Norfolk Heritage Park with a new look, which will be run in conjunction with the University of Sheffield. Amateur artists can pick up tips from professionals at the 11th Art in the Gardens at the Botanical Gardens followed by the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run in September. One of the country’s top literature festivals, Off The Shelf, takes place at dozens of venues across the city in October followed by the Christmas lights switch on in November and the British Heart Foundation’s Santa Jog in December. With a host of other high profile events such as Cliffhanger, and several new music festivals also on the verge of confirming their 2014 dates, it promises to be a jam packed year. Steve Brailey, chief executive of Sheffield International Venues (SIV), said: “Once again we can look forward to another packed year of regional, national and international events. The 2014 programme will not only boost the local economy through hotel stays and local spend, but it will strengthen the city’s reputation as a leading world sports event destination with superb sporting facilities.” For more information about Sheffield’s major event’s programme visit www. welcometosheffield.co.uk/events

STRICTLY LIVE RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD Reader Competition Motorpoint Arena Tues 28th & Wed 28th Jan

After three very enjoyable but gruelling months on the television show, the seven stars of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing have signed up to go through it all again as part of the Strictly Live Tour. The tour, which comes to the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield for two performances on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th January, will be hosted by 2012 Strictly star Lisa Riley and promises to be the most glittering tour yet. It’s a big commitment - but one which the stars can’t wait for, with many relishing the chance to get back on the dance floor and show off their skills to a home crowd. Strictly Come Dancing 2013 winner, footballer’s wife and TV presenter Abbey Clancy, 27, married to former England and Stoke striker Peter Crouch, is one of the stars desperate not to hang up her dance shoes. “For me Strictly has been the most incredible experience and I wanted to carry on forever,” she said. “So the tour is a brilliant opportunity to keep dancing.” “Peter loves dancing and so does our daughter Sophia. When I was on Strictly she wouldn’t watch the show unless she was wearing a tutu and little dance shoes. The costumes on the show are beautiful and I love the fact the tour means I can carry on getting made up, getting a fake tan, tons of glitter and millions of hair extensions. It’s every girl’s dream.” Abbey’s not the only one who’s itching to get back into her Strictly costume. Strictly Come Dancing 2013 runner-up and BBC Breakfast star Susanna Reid also built up a loyal following during her time on Strictly. The 42-yearold TV presenter was dubbed ‘Superwoman’ for her ability to fit in a demanding career on breakfast television, being a mum to three children and her training for the show. So performing in front of a crowd of 10,000 excited Strictly fans filling arenas should be a doddle, right? “I work on TV so am used to performing in front of cameras and not seeing the whites of people’s eyes looking up at you and hoping to be entertained,” she said. “But performing to such a big crowd, you get the instant feedback that you don’t get with TV. I got a taste of it during Strictly in front of the studio audience and more so at Blackpool and I am looking forward to it again on the tour.”

So what does Susanna, who is based in Salford with BBC Breakfast, think she’ll bring to the Strictly live tour? “I think I have proved that as a woman over 40 with three children you can learn to dance with a gorgeous young teacher,” she said with a laugh. “I might not get every step right, but I do it with a smile on my face. And after the tour is over I will still be dancing in my local clubs every Friday night.” But it’s not only this year’s crop of celebrities limbering up for a return to the Strictly dance floor. Westlife star Nicky Byrne, who appeared in last year’s series, is also dry cleaning his tuxedo and polishing up his dance shoes for another shot at getting his hands on the glitter ball trophy. Nicky, 35, who made it to the last eight contestants in 2012, is back with his partner Karen Hauer, and says he can’t wait to get back on the road - despite his wife Georgina giving birth to the couple’s third child in October.” A year away hasn’t dampened Nicky’s competitive spirit either. “I really want to win. I wanted to win the series last year and I was gutted when I got knocked out,” he said. “And I’m looking forward to getting in front of the judges again. You always have good fun and banter with them and I’ve had a year to prepare my oneliners!” Tickets for Strictly Come Dancing The Live Tour 2014 at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield are available online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or in person at the Arena box office. Tickets purchased online or from the ticket hotline are priced from £38.50. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced from £36.75

WIN TICKETS TO SEE “CHUBBY” BROWN AT THE CITY HALL This weekend one of the UK’s most popular and controversial comedians returns to Sheffield as Roy “Chubby” Brown graces Sheffield City Hall this Saturday (18th). Easily recognisable by his flying cap, goggles and multicoloured suit as well his his close (very close at times) to the bone style of comedy “Chubby” is rarely seen on TV but has still managed to to enjoy a successful 40 year career and has one of the largest fanbases in the country. Starting work as an entertainer on the Working Mens Club scene in the 60’s first as a drummer and later as a comedy act under the name “Alcock & Brown”. Brown appeared on the UK television talent show New Faces in the 1970s, coming second to a country and western band. He failed the audition for another television talent show Opportunity Knocks after saying the word ‘arse’ during his interview. Although Roy divides opinion with his style of comedy even without mainstream coverage his top selling live show DVD’s (he’s now up to 23 and counting) and sell-out performances show that he

is still as popular as ever. There aren’t many of Chubby’s jokes we can repeat here in the Mercury mainly due to the langauge but also because we’d have a pile of angry letters from Mother-in-Laws from all over the region. However you can catch him live over the next few weeks both at the Sheffield City Hall and then Doncaster Dome on Friday 7th February. More details and tickets can be found at www.chubbybrown.biz

COMPETITION We have kindly been given a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky reader for Chubby’s appearance at Sheffield City Hall this Saturday. All you have to do is send your name and a daytime telephone number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk or via post to 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before noon on Friday 17th January. MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Yes no sooner have we got Christmas out of the way, our thoughts turn to getting away from the winter weather and jetting off to sunnier places. I can’t wait for my holiday in the Canaries next month, but you can win one now for FREE thanks to Magic. You’ll board the Norwegian Getaway ship for a wonderful Mediterranean cruise for 2 people. Staying in a Balcony Stateroom for 7 nights, you can explore a whole range of locations en route – Barcelona, Civitavecchia (for Rome), Livorno (for Florence/Pisa), Cannes and Palma. There are also a range of activities on board, along with fine dining and top entertainment, which will see you cruising in style. The prize is all thanks to Norwegian Cruise Line, and if you’ve been listening carefully this week you may well have heard Nick Wright broadcasting his show on board, sampling some of the delights. Simply tune in next Friday January 17th and we’ll give you the full details of what you need to do to enter for a chance of winning. Good luck, listen in and it could well be you. Trevor

PAYING YOUR SUBS CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

It’s that time of year again. The Christmas decorations have been taken down from around the bar and wherever else they adorned. The old club might be looking a little emptier after the festive cheer has gone. But the start of the year is usually ‘subs’ time in the club calendar. Members need to go into their clubs and paid their annual dues so they can continue to use the facilities and gain the benefits of being part of something bigger than themselves. Plus the Associate Pass card can be purchased, entitling use other CIU clubs. I went into my local club to pay my subs on Sunday. The practice of paying ‘subs’ is the traditional way that private members clubs were funded, and indeed many other social institutions. It’s a simple but effective practice with people putting in the same amount into the collective pot for running costs and activities. In the very early years of the club movement when small clubs were being set up, member’s subs might have just about paid the rent and the basic facilities such as furniture, newspapers, and domino sets. The more members, the bigger the pot of money for the club, yet expansion was limited by the size of the property. Any further development required additional income, which for many clubs came first from selling beer and later in the 20th century from bingo. You will often find posters in clubs stating that ‘New Members are Welcome’ perhaps aimed at existing members to encourage them to bring in different people It would good if such appeals were made on club websites as well as the internet these days to reach more potential members. 40 years ago, there were waiting lists to join popular clubs and when January came, those near the top would be hopeful of finally being able to pay their first subs and get their membership card. Those nearer down, would have to wait a while longer. January is also the time when the CIU can take stock of how many clubs remain affiliated. The peak figure of over 4000 clubs in the early 1970s is now a distant memory (like the waiting lists for people to join clubs.) The national organisation, 152 years old this year, has fewer numbers on their books, and also probably need to run a recruitment drive to replace hundreds of lost clubs. They need their ‘subs’ to help keep going.

OF MICE AND MEN Interview Words by Katy Evans

2014…the year of the horse? Forget that, 2014 is all about one animal…the mouse. The year of the mouse, the year Of Mice and Men. Storming into the New Year armed with their brand spanking new album “Restoring Force,” the flood has calmed, however the whirlwind is just around the corner. Buckle up for a bumpy ride, ladies and gents here we take you on a journey through the last two years of America’s most prosperous band, the most anticipated release of the new year and tour to match…a round of applause please and prepare to welcome back, Of Mice And Men. Although joining in mid-2012, ‘Restoring Force’ holds a poignant corner stone for Of Mice and Men as it is their very first recording with cleans vocalist and bass guitarist Aaron Pauley. Picking up the pace and injecting his own personal thoughts, opinions and skills into the album, Austin goes onto explain how comfortable the dynamics now are within the group. “Aaron became our brother, our best friend and helped us take control of our career. He fit right in. We got to the point where we were finishing each other’s sentences! We were both bringing ideas to the table, we were bouncing off one and other.” Who wants to be pin-pointed into a certain category or group? Who honestly wants to be constrained to such stereotypical genres, or feel the need to conform to a particular way of living? For Austin, this is exactly what their new album is trying to avoid. It’s impossible to categorise ‘Restoring Force’ into a genre…track ‘Would You Still Be There’ has an air of Papa Roach, along with others comparable to the likes of Slipknot, Deftones and Korn, a true reflection of the nature of Of Mice And Men now. Long gone are the days when music is about writing for radio airplay, making way for a release which is a soundtrack to the band members lifestyles, tastes, heroes and personalities. Amen to that… “We didn’t go in saying we wanted to do this or that. We just wanted to release good songs. Me and Jon Davis (lead vocalist of Korn) have the same tattoo artist, he told me that he has already pre-ordered the album. We love their music and thought, why don’t we make an album that we as a band like and would want to listen to. We wanted to make an album that we personally liked, and I think we hit the nail on the head with that one.” If like us you’re a big style music geek (there’s nothing cooler in our humble opinion) then the name David Bendeth will instantly ring a bell. Easily one of the most renowned music producers in the business, we can pretty much guarantee you’ve listen to at least twenty tracks David has produced. Working with the likes of A Day To Remember, Killswitch Engage, Papa Roach and Underoath, it’s

NEW TALENT TOUR VISITS ROTHERHAM

Satellite Tour, a brand new live music experience showcasing the best up-and-coming artists, is coming in February 2014 calling in at Rotherham Trades club on Saturday 8th February. Pioneering a new touring circuit, this is one of the few to visit all corners of the UK. The 14 date stint kicks off in Canterbury on 5thFeb, hitting it’s most northerly point of Ayr, Scotland on 13th, whilst stopping off in Aberystwyth, Wales before cumulating at Exeter’s iconic Cavern. The tour visits some of the best small venues the UK has to offer, bringing the hottest new artists to a town near you. This will allow dedicated music fans in the regions the opportunity to see these breaking acts at intimate venues. The bands partaking in the tour have been hand picked as those surely to make waves throughout 2014 and beyond. The bands have been announced as...

crystal clear to hear how much of an updated impact David has had on Of Mice and Men’s ‘Restoring Faith.’ “David has helped us all so much. He was there for us individually pushing us all. We would go to him and he would say ‘go back and work on it!’ He was there to push us and pull the best out of us all. That’s why we wanted him to work with us in the first place.” A central message behind an album always makes a release that little bit more magical. Whether it be to entertain, motivate or simply to act as a soundtrack to everyday life, without the bite an album is simple a set of drum beats, lyrics and rhythm. The main message is the glue to the tracks, the punch behind the production, the backbone of any release. ‘Restoring Force’ is all bound together by one thing…but what is it? “I want fans to listen and decide what they draw from it. I don’t want to put a label on it before they hear it. I want them to put their own label on it themselves. The album itself though is a reflection of what we all personally as a band have gone through. It’s an honest, true album which was always the aim of the album for us.” Let us take a moment to think about what makes you the happiest you can possibly be…the atmosphere of a live gig? The buzz of a festival main arena? Watching your favourite band within the company of your best friends? For Austin however, the answer is very simple indeed…being on the road. There are plenty of factors about being a rockstar which music listeners tend to brush over and forget; the fact that your hero spends months and months away from their home town, family and friends, exchanging a comfy bed for a tour bus bunk, spending hour upon hour in foreign airports and being forever on the go. Austin Carlile can think of nothing better than this, he lives for the moment when we can step foot onto the tour bus, embarking on yet another Of Mice and Men adventure. Ok ok so “the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men often go awry…” however what better challenge, what bigger buzz can you think of than waking up in a different city, different state or country every day, indulging in a personal discovery into exploring the world and performing in some of the world’s most iconic locations? Jealous…us… never! “It’s always nice being on the road. It’s better than being at home that’s for sure! Being on the road is like home to us. When I’m home I’m always busy, all the band have their fiancés and partners but I always get bored when I’m at home and itch to get back on tour. You get used to it, you get in the groove which is fantastic, I love it.” Restoring Force is out on 27th January through Rise Records

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

Last week, I talked about my initial forays into dropshot fishing and the simplicity of this exciting ‘new’ method. Having discussed it, I thought I do a little investigating and find out how much information was actually available at the one place you would expect to find it; the tackle shop.....I was left somewhat disappointed.... Most of my facts and figures came from an excellent video I watched which features a Fox backed chum of mine Julian Chidgey, and a little trial and error, with bits thrown in by other anglers I know before hitting the bank and refining my technique. I’m a sucker for more knowledge as a good angler never knows all, so a trip to the tackle shop seemed a good idea. I travel far and wide across the UK so I get to pop into a wide variety of outlets and I was looking forward to finding out more. It would be remiss of me to name any shop as all were equally unaware of even the basics, never mind the finer points of dropshotting....not a criticism as I’m a huge supporter of the local retailer, but merely an observation. Indeed, despite being plastered all over the angling press, both hard copy and online, an abundance of video and pictures, no one I spoke to knew very much about it at all! I was trying to get hold of some dedicated dropshot weights; a small cylinder of tungsten, designed to be affixed or moved without causing any damage to the fluorocarbon to which it is attached, but it appears they are only currently available online. Not one tackle shop owner knew what I was referring to! I asked whether suitable hooks and soft plastics were stocked, again, I was met with mostly blank stares.... Enquiries about the actual ‘method’ were met, with one exception, with a metaphoric shrug of the shoulders....

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

The one exception was outstanding; I don’t think I’ve ever been given so much incorrect information in such a short time by one person. I was subjected to a plethora of what can only be described politely as complete claptrap and it was obvious that the exponent had never tried it, so instead told me about how he fished for perch...not what I asked about at all! Out of the corner of my eye, I caught embarrassed colleagues giving each other that look that said “.... not again....” So what’s my point this week? I’m certainly no expert when it comes to this highly enjoyable method, but it appears that not many other people are either, including those it might reasonably be expected could be. So; is this a rare opportunity to get ahead of the rest and catch some really big perch with relative ease before the whole angling community gets wise to it? You could be the guy on the bank bagging big stripeys and other predators for fun whilst others watch enviously. There is an awful lot of good information about if you know where to look, so get digging, get jigging and get dropshotting!

racing form by Timelord

Ascot and Haydock provide this Saturday’s Channel 4 TV action. There will be seven races in total shown on Channel 4 with four coming from Ascot and three from Haydock. With just eight weeks to the Cheltenham Festival it is time to keep a very close eye on the big races coming up in the next month or so and this Saturday provides several good races that might provide Festival clues. The top race is the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase at Ascot. Ascot: 1.50 OLBG.com Mares’ Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 3m: This race was reported as the likely next target for Carole’s Spirit after her last win at Haydock where she beat As I Am by 2 ½ lengths in a good time for the conditions (soft going over 2 ½ miles), staying on strongly to overhaul the runner up after the last. The step up in distance should prove no difficulty and she is unbeaten over hurdles this season. Accordingly she is a relatively strong suggestion for top honours here. In my view, despite some pretty impressive form figures from the likes of Highland Retreat, Mickie, Ma Filleule and a couple of the others, Donald McCain’s She Ranks Me may prove to be the principal danger to the selection. The full reserve order is: She Ranks Me; Rattlin; Prima Porta; Supreme Carolina; and Mickie. 2.25 Keltbray Holloway’s Hurdle (Limited Handicap), Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m 3f 110yds: This race has all the hallmarks of a very tricky contest. The improving The Skyfarmer is unbeaten this season and is on the upgrade. This will be his sternest test to date but Lyvius, who he beat by four lengths last time out, came out and won at Kempton last Saturday to frank that Cheltenham form. Calculated Risk, Marito and Citizenship all also won last time out. However I prefer to look elsewhere and like the look of Gibb River’s form. The form of the Newbury handicap won by Vendor in November seems to be working out very well indeed. Saphir Du Rheu who finished fourth in that race has won twice since, including last weekend’s Lanzarote Handicap where he was impressive in victory and Citizenship, who also contested that Newbury race, finishing fifteenth, has won since. When defeated by Vendor at Newbury Saphir Du Rheu lost by some five and a half lengths when in receipt of 6lbs but that day Gibb River was trying to give that winner a stone and finished only a few lengths further back. Given Saphir Du Rheu’s exploits since that Newbury race in November and Citizenship’s win, Gibb River’s performance in that race looks all the more meritorious so there could be some value in him in this contest. My first reserve animal is another to have contested that Newbury race, Imperial Leader who finished behind Gibb River but in front of Citizenship. The full order of preference is: Gibb River; Imperial Leader; Calculated Risk; Clonard Lad; Franciscan; Marito; The Skyfarmer; and Citizenship. 3.00 Sodexo Handicap Chase, 2m 5f 110yds: This is another quite tricky race to solve. Tatenen is a course and distance winner, a winner last time out at Newbury and owner of my top lifetime rating. He must therefore be a dangerous opponent in my book. To complicate the picture further Kruzhlinin, Ma Filleule, Renard, and Theatrical Star all also won last time out and all recorded very respectable speed figures while doing so. Furthermore Big Fella Thanks, Super Duty, Gus Macrae and Niceonefrankie all recorded similar speed figures to those above horses last time out, albeit not winning. In something of a coin toss I have decided to go for Kruzhlinin who looks a tough cookie to me and is on the upgrade in my opinion. My slight negative is the distance of this race as he might be better over further but, if on song, the hat trick may well be on the cards. The reserve order is: Tatenen; Theatrical Star; Big Fella Thanks; Super Duty; Renard; Gus Macrae; Niceonefrankie; and Ma Filleule. 3.35 Sodexo Clarence House Chase, Grade 1, 5yo+, 2m 1f: Despite the presence of Sire de Grugy I have a strong fancy for Hidden Cyclone for this one. His ¾ length second to Benefficient in the Grade 1 Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas came in a very good time for the conditions. There he finished ahead of some very high class chasers, including Sizing Europe, which gives the form of that race a pretty solid look to me. Sire De Grugy must enter calculations after his impressive showings this term but I also like the look of a few of the others, that comprise the remaining reserve list after Sire de Grugy, namely: Lancetto (who beat Gus Macrae over course and distance last time out); Fox Appeal (won over 2m 3f here last time out); Oiseau de Nuit (an old favourite who rarely runs a bad race); Days Hotel; Special Tiara; and Somersby. Haydock: 2.05 Skybet Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m: Even though this race has quite a strong look to it my clear preference is for Zamdy Man, who hails from the in-form Venetia Williams stable and has won his last two races. Last time out he won over course and

31

distance in a very impressive time, making all and staying on well to see off some pretty decent rivals. He was also impressive on his previous run and should take all the beating if turning out in the same form. My pecking order for the reserves is: Meadowcroft Boy; Sergeant Reckless; Stand To Reason; Big Casino; Maybe I Won’t; Valseur Lido; and It’s High Time. 2.40 stanjames.com Champion Hurdle Trial, Grade 2, 2m: There might be a bit of value about Ifandbutwhynot in this. His last time out second to Strongpoint at Musselburgh came in a very fast time for the soft conditions and he only went down by four lengths when trying to give the winner 9lbs. Act of Kalanisi and Desert Cry both come here seeking hat tricks but, while this pair and Marito, Melodic Rendezvous, Morning Royalty, Ptit Zig, Blood Cotil and Jumps Road are all very much respected rivals, I have a suspicion that the principal danger may emerge from Doyly Carte who beat Morning Royalty when second to Rolling Star over this track and trip in a good time last time out. That day he also beat Runswick Royal by five lengths when giving 1lb and, through Runswick Royal, there may not be much between the him and the selection since Ifandbutwhynot beat Runswick Royal by 3 ¾ lengths at Musselburgh when giving 6lbs (after apprentice allowance). The full order of preference is: Ifandbutwhynot; Doyly Carte; Morning Royalty; Act of Kalanisi; Ptit Zig; Desert Cry; and Marito. 3.15 Peter Marsh Chase (Limited Handicap), Grade 2, 3m 1f: Night Alliance’s last time out win over three miles here earns him the vote to prevail. That race was run in a fast time on soft ground and he is three from four in his last few appearances (the other one was a fall at the last at Kelso when 4 lengths down and chasing Kruzhlinin! – see above). This is still a pretty competitive affair however and the (very much respected) reserves are: Chance Du Roy; Merry King; Theatrical Star; Vintage Star; Super Duty; Wicklow Lad; Wychwoods Brook; Knock A Hand; Sydney Paget; and Ma Filleule.

WE ARE GOOD WE CAN DO IT A DESERVED ENOUGH - TOMLINSON WIN SAYS

Doncaster manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after their 1-0 defeat at Ewood Park “I’m obviously disappointed with the result, I thought Blackburn started the game really well on the front foot and pegged us back a little bit, we weathered the storm and from about 25 minutes on wards there wasn’t a lot in the game and we settled in well. “A lapse of concentration just before half time has cost us, when you have players like Jordan Rhodes in your team and Gestede up-front, you make a mistake like that and you are going to get punished. “We sat the boy down at half time, got into them and just told them to believe a bit more and in the second half I thought we were fantastic and deserved something from the game. “Paul Robinson showed everyone why he is an England goalkeeper, with two outstanding saves, the first one especially was a world class save and we feel a little bit aggrieved again that we haven’t got anything out of the game. “The second half gives me a lot of confidence because we are down there at the minute and having a bit of a rough time, but anyone who has seen us here today will know we are good enough to get out of this”.

One Direction star Louis Tomlinson was in the crowd at Ewood Park as Rovers slipped to a onegoal defeat. He spoke officially to Rovers Player after Blackburn’s 1-0 victory to give his thoughts on the match. “I think the second half was promising and we we’re really unlucky at the end, it was frustrating, but the Blackburn goalkeeper pulled out a great save. “I hope they will stay up and I think they can do it, I think they have the players to do it, the Championship is such a close league, there is a lot of luck, and it’s just about if results go our way, but I think we can do it.

County Senior League S&HCFA Association Cup Quarter-Finals Midweek, Jubilee Sports of Division One shocked Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves of the Premier Division 3-1 at the Look Local Stadium. The win means Jubilee go a step further than last year, when they lost 5-4 to Rossington Main in the Quarter Finals of the competition. Wickersley defeated Joker FC 4-2 after extra-time at Ruby Cook Playing Fields. The win will go some way to avenge Wickersley’s 1-0 loss in the league to Joker a couple of weeks ago. Two own goals gave Athersley Recreation Reserves a 2-1 win over Holmbridge AFC at Sheerien Park. Athersley’s progress means that now there are only County Senior League team left in this years’ competition. Penistone, getting himself on the score-sheet twice in the process. Penistone may be 11 points off the pace, but they do have three games spare. High Green Villa were held to a 2-2 draw at home to fourth placed Swallownest Miners Welfare. Swallownest have now lost only one of their last six league games. Adam Stead was once again on the score-sheet for Houghton Main, as they beat Frecheville 2-0 at Middlecliffe Lane. A response was expected from Houghton Main, who lost 5-0 against Swinton Athletic last time out in the league. Chris Esberger scored a brace to inspire Millmoor Juniors to a 2-1 win over Ecclesfield Red Rose at the Civil Service Ground. Millmoor’s win ends a run of three successive league defeats. Division One It was a family affair at Davy Sports Club, as goals from both Joe and Robert Jerrison gave Sheffield Bankers a 2-1 home win over second placed Silkstone United. The win was enough for the Bankers to climb off the foot of the table and above Davy FC. The high-flying Silkstone have now lost four of their last five league games, but are still only a point behind leaders Joker FC Jake Outram was the hero for Sheffield Athletic, as they beat Jubilee Sports 3-0 at Chaucer School. Outram scored all three goals for Sheffield, who are now five games unbeaten and climbing the table after a poor start to the season. Division Two Kingstone United ended a run of back-to-back league losses; with a comfortable 3-0 away win over Frecheville Reserves. Kingstone are now five points off leaders North Gawber Colliery with a game in hand. Third placed Bawtry Town scored a late equaliser to draw 2-2 against New Bohemians at the Keepmoat Stadium. Bawtry are level on points with the aforementioned Kingstone United, but sit in third as

they have a poorer goal difference. Kiveton Park’s recent revival continued, as they recorded a 2-0 home win against Caribbean Sports. Kiveton now sit third from the bottom of the table, and have only lost one of their last six league games. In contrast Caribbean have lost all of their last four league games. Boynton Sports scored four goals at home for the second successive league game. This time they were 4-1 winners against Bramley Sunnyside. Matt Ord grabbed the man of the match for Boynton, scoring a brace. Sheffield FC Reserves recorded their third consecutive league win, with a hard-fought 3-2 home win over Sheffield Lane Top. Perry Jackson (pen), Miles Howarth and Robert Brookfield were all on the score-sheet for Sheffield. U21 Division Alex Lill once again inspired league leader Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 to victory. Lill scored twice as Swallownest beat second placed North Gawber Colliery U21. The win means Swallownest now lead the way in the U21 Division by three points. Valley Knights U21 were impressive 4-1 winners over Swinton Athletic U21 at Cortonwood MW Scheme. The win is Valley Knights’ fourth in their last five league games. Adam MacArthur scored a hat-trick for Davy FC U21, as they beat Bawtry Town U21 4-3 at the Keepmoat Stadium in the early kick-off. The reverse fixture was also high-scoring earlier in the season, when Bawtry came out winners 6-4. Meadowhall League Once again there were a number of postponements due to waterlogged pitches across South Yorkshire. Premier Division Brunsmeer Bradway AJW notched up their fourth consecutive league win, with a 2-1 win over The

Devonshire at HSBC Sports Club. Brunsmeer sit in third place in the Premier Division, only one point behind leaders Royal Earl with two games in hand. Crookes climb into fifth position in the table, with a comfortable 4-1 win over Sharrow United at Warminster Road. Even though they are in fifth place, Crookes are only two points behind the leaders, and have a game spare. Division One League leaders High Noon heaped more woe on struggling Intake Ball Inn, beating them 10-0 at Warminster Road. It is the second consecutive 10-0 home loss for Intake, but is an improvement on the 14 they conceded in the reverse fixture against High Noon in October. Hurlfield are High Noon’s closest challengers, following their 2-1 away win over Penistone Church. Hurlfield trail the leaders by five points, and the two rivals are yet to face each other in the league this season. U21 Division It was not unlucky for Sheffield United Junior Blades U21, as they registered their 13th consecutive league win at Burgoyne Park on Sunday. The Blades were 5-2 winners over Swallownest U21 and extended their lead at the top of the U21 Division to a whopping 23 points. The Blades have only dropped two points in their 16 league games thus far. Hackenthorpe Warriors U21 claimed their first league win of the season, with a 5-1 victory over mid-table Double Top U21. Andrew Swift starred for Hackenthorpe, scoring three goals. The win is enough to lift Hackenthorpe off the foot of the table, and above Swallownest U21. Matthew Ward scored a brace for Brampton Dynamos U21 at Whirlow Farm, as they beat Crosspool U21 4-0. The win takes Brampton up to fourth in the standings.

BLADES TAKE THE LEAD BUT LOSE OUT MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The Blades returned to Sky Bet League One action with a bump on Saturday. Despite Conor Coady giving the Blades a very early lead, the Blades slipped to defeat at Notts County. All looked rosy for United’s 3,321 travelling fans when Coady fired home after two minutes but goals from Enoch Showunmi and Mark Fotheringham secured victory for ex-Blade Shaun Derry’s County. Following the previous week’s FA Cup exploits at Villa, manager Clough opted for one change, Coady replacing Murphy, who dropped to the bench. Also amongst the substitutes was new loan capture Paynter and young midfielder Whitehouse, who has recently returned from a loan spell at York. Clough’s decision to bring in Coady reaped rewards after just two minutes as the Blades grabbed an early lead. From his position on the right, COADY ran at the County defence, played a neat onetwo with Porter and confidently poked the ball beyond Bialkowski’s right hand. The goal set the tone for an entertaining opening ten minutes. Campbell-Ryce curled over after a run by Grealish and Coady had an easier chance to double his tally following good work from McGinn and Baxter, plus another neat lay-off by Porter.

It required a timely tackle by Maguire to prevent Murray shooting as County broke away and looked dangerous in a four-on-four situation and Doyle would have hoped to have done better when he volleyed over after a Blades corner was only half-cleared. The start was open, entertaining for the fans, but it worked against the Blades. A Sheehan free-kick was easy for Long but the home side’s equaliser arrived on 26 minutes. Campbell-Ryce was looking dangerous down the right and it was his powerful cross that was turned in by SHOWUNMI, the ball squirming under the Blades goalkeeper. County’s goal enabled the momentum to shift in their favour wide. for a spell and United’s Hill picked up the game’s first yellow card, following a foul on Campbell-Ryce. As half-time approached the Blades regained composure and attempted to apply pressure. County survived two appeals for handball in the penalty area, whilst a long-range free-kick from Baxter, which was well off target, was the last noteworthy effort of the first period. Early in the second half McMahon fired over as the ball hit a bobble just as he was about to unleash but the home side began well and asked questions of the Blades defence. Murray fired over and Long had to rush off his line to ensure there wasn’t disastrous consequences from McMahon’s back pass. Baxter was off target with two longrange efforts and the first change of the afternoon was by the Blades - Paynter introduced for his debut, replacing Flynn. The new boy joined Porter up front, leaving Coady and Baxter in wide midfield roles.

Midway through the half, however, County went ahead. Possession was lost when the ball bounced off Hill’s boot and after play was switched, Sheehan’s cross found FOTHERINGHAM, whose initial header was saved by Long but the rebound dropped to the midfielder to poke home. McMahon was booked for simulation but the Blades were the predominant attacking force in the last 20 minutes. One of the better chances saw Baxter and McGinn linked up well but the latter’s shot, after a neat turn, was over. In the final 10 minutes Murphy took over from McGinn as the midfield was rejigged once more. Paynter was booked and late on Miller replaced Hill. The last of the Blades changes was robbed by Leacock as he looked to get in on goal as five minutes of added time was announced. In the injury-time period the Blades were again pushing forward but a number of fortunate ricochets - plus Baxter’s half-volley sliding just wide of the post - helped County avenge the opening day defeat at Bramall Lane. Notts Co: Bialkowski, Sheehan, Smith, Leacock, Grealish, Showunmi, Murray (Haynes 85), Campbell-Ryce, Fotheringham, Freeman, Boucaud. Unused: Thompson, Tempest, Hollis, Bishop, Pilkington, Ball. Blades: Long, Maguire, Hill (Miller 88), Flynn (Paynter 64), Doyle, Porter, Baxter, McGinn (Murphy 82), Collins, Coady, McMahon. Unused: Howard, Brandy, Whitehouse, Kennedy.

BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough was understandably bitterly disappointed following Saturday’s unfortunate 2-1 reversal at Notts County. Conor Coady gave the Blades an early lead at Meadow Lane, but goals from Enoch Showunmi and Mark Fotheringham ensured the points didn’t come back up the M1, much to Clough’s annoyance: “I don’t feel the final scoreline was a fair one, but we didn’t make the most of the chances we created. “We played well in parts and matched Notts County when the game was a battle, they have scored from two crosses but rarely troubled us otherwise. “Nothing really pleases me, given the defeat, but like a lot of other teams, including Aston Villa, we haven’t given much away defensively, so we are frustrated to leave with nothing.” The Blades boss felt key decision went against United, adding: “On the day we didn’t get the run of the ball and even more so we didn’t get a lot of decisions in our favour. “Tony (McMahon) has a shot in the firsthalf, we saw it from where we were on the touchline, it is blatant handball and penalty. “That was just one puzzling decision though. Our supporters who follow us away from home will be wondering why these decisions, like the penalty at Walsall, are going against us.” Clough concluded by saying his team should have built on Coady’s early opener, remarking: “It was a brilliant goal we scored inside two minutes, but we should have doubled that advantage in the first ten minutes. We needed to take charge of the game whilst they were rocking but we didn’t manage to do so. “When you are on top it is crucial you take control of the game.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS KNOCK LEEDS FOR SIX MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk

Wednesday put ten-man Leeds to the sword on Saturday at Hillsborough with an emphatic 6-0 win. It was a dominating performance from start to finish from Wednesday, who were simply too good for United on the day. First half goals from Reda Johnson and Atdhe Nuhiu sent the Owls into the break two goals to the good. Leeds striker Matt Smith was introduced from the bench for the start of the second period but left the action just seconds later, picking up a straight red card for a clash with Reda Johnson. The ten men of Leeds were facing an uphill battle that became even steeper when Connor Wickham fired home his eighth goal in ten games. The visitors’ misery was compounded when Chris Maguire’s deflected free kick nestled in the back of the net but there was more to come. Caolan Lavery, fresh from his productive loan spell with Plymouth, added a fifth ten minutes from time and scored the Owls’ sixth in added time to cap an

excellent day for the hosts. The early stages were typical of a derby affair with strong challenges flying in from the off, as Lee Peltier produced a crunching challenge on Jose Semedo in the opening minute. And after enjoying the best of the early action, the Owls edged in front with a superbly worked goal finished off by Reda Johnson. Following a half clearance from Leeds, Kieran Lee chipped a delicate ball into the middle for the defender, who composed himself before lifting the ball over Paddy Kenny and into the Leppings Lane net. Still the Owls continued on the front foot and Wickham sent a glancing header wide before Kenny was called into action to save a stinging Maguire drive at the near post. Things got even better for Wednesday right on the stroke of half time with Nuhiu on target for his third goal of the season. Wednesday broke in numbers as Wickham played in Lee, who advanced into the box before squaring for Nuhiu to slide in at the back stick. The Owls were relentless going forward and Liam Palmer had a golden chance to make it three before the break but clipped inches wide, with Wednesday well in the driving seat. The second half began with an extraordinary piece of action just seconds after the restart. Smith, who had just been introduced to the action, received a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Reda Johnson having only been on the field for a matter of seconds. And to add to Leeds’ misery, Wednesday effectively killed off the game minutes

later. Wickham picked up possession just outside the area and cleverly advanced with the ball before beating Kenny at his near post with a low strike. It was becoming a long afternoon for United, who looked out of sorts at Hillsborough, but there was no let up from the Owls as the one-way traffic continued. Wednesday looked like adding to their lead with every attack and in the 66th minute, it was 4-0 with Maguire inking his name on the scoresheet. The Scot lined up a free kick from 25 yards and his low strike flew past Kenny, who remained rooted to the spot with the ball taking a deflection along the way. There was still time for more punishment, though, as the rampant Owls hit their fifth goal ten minutes from time. Lavery, recalled from Plymouth in midweek, picked up possession on the halfway line and advanced towards Leeds’ goal with menace before tucking his strike neatly into the net off the post. The youngster was on target again in added time, profiting from another Leeds mix-up at the back and firing home into the bottom corner - the day well and truly belonged to Wednesday. Owls: Kirkland, Palmer, Llera, Loovens, R Johnson, Lee, Semedo, Maghoma (J Johnson 74), Maguire (Helan 81), Wickham, Nuhiu (Lavery 66) Leeds: Kenny, Peltier, Lees (Smith 46, sent off 46), Pearce, Austin, Pugh, Zaliukas, Stewart, Mowatt, Kebe, McCormack Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

LOOKING UP MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk

Stuart Gray is looking onwards and upwards following the 6-0 rout of Yorkshire rivals Leeds at Hillsborough. The Owls turned in a thoroughly dominant display all over the park to brush the Whites aside in the most emphatic manner in the Sky Bet Championship early kick-off. And Gray said the players got exactly what they deserved having bossed the game from start to finish: “I’m a big believer in looking upwards and I’m going to enjoy this moment because moments like these are why you are in football. “We were outstanding in every position and in all honesty, I don’t think you could pick a man of the match because there were so many candidates. “And they got what was due to them because they have worked so hard. We may have got lucky on a couple of goals with a deflection and a post but I believe the harder you work, the luckier you get.” Gray was also delighted for the Hillsborough hordes, who have shown patience of the highest order for much of the campaign so far. He added: “I couldn’t be happier for the fans and today I thought they were magnificent. “I have said to the players that sometimes you need to inspire the crowd and that can as simple as winning a 50-50 challenge, chasing down your opponent or having a shot. “We did all that and more today and everyone has their reward.”

INTERNATIONAL DEFENDER CHECKS IN SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday have signed American international defender Oguchi Onyewu on a free transfer. The towering stopper has signed a short term contract that runs until the end of the current campaign. Onyewu began his career with French outfit Metz in 2002 before enjoying two loan spells in Belgium with La Louviere and Standard Liege, moving to the latter on a permanent basis in 2004. He was swiftly named in the Belgian elite XI as well as scooping the Foreign Player of the Year award. Awards continued for Onyewu, who was then voted USA Soccer Athlete of the Year and attracted interest from a raft of European clubs. The stopper moved to Newcastle in the Premiership on loan before returning to Belgium to extend his stay with Standard Liege, leading the team to a second consecutive league title. Onyewu continued to impress and signed a three-year deal with Italian giants AC Milan in 2009 but suffered a knee injury that limited his game time in Italy. He left Milan to join Dutch champions Twente on loan in 2011 before moving across Europe to sign for Portugese outfit Sporting Lisbon, helping the club to the semi finals of the Europa League in his maiden campaign. The 31-year-old then moved on to Spanish side Malaga on a temporary deal, storing Champions League football along the way. He came back to England last summer to sign for Championship promotion favourites QPR and left Loftus Road on the expiry of his contract this week.
