SOUTH YORKSHIRE DOODLERS URGED TO SCRIBBLE AWAY FOR GOOD CAUSE

Residents, community groups, workplaces and schools from across South Yorkshire are being invited to join celebrities including Alan Titchmarsh, Bill Nighy, Jackie Collins and Sir Michael Parkinson, and put pen to paper for National Doodle Day. Taking place on Friday 7 March, the event raises much-needed funds for
Epilepsy Action. The charity supports people with epilepsy all over the UK. Around 13,000 people are living with the condition in South Yorkshire. National Doodle Day, which is supported by Dodo Pad, publishers of the original family ‘doodle’ diary, aims to get as many people doodling as possible to help Epilepsy Action
continue its vital work. The charity is urging people to ‘do a doodle, donate a pound’ with the chance of a prize for anyone taking part. All schools entering the competition will have the opportunity to win £250 of equipment and resource vouchers. Groups and individuals are in with a chance of winning a range of cash prizes. The winner
of each category will also receive a custommade 3D stuffed figure of their doodle design, courtesy of Lucy Moose. All winners will get a certificate and will have their work displayed in the doodle Hall of Fame on the National Doodle Day website. Philippa Cartwright, fundraising events manager at Epilepsy Action, said: “Doodlers across the
UK have helped us to raise over £275,000 since the very first National Doodle Day over ten years ago. “Each day, 17 children and young people are told that they have epilepsy, changing their lives forever. By taking part in National Doodle Day, members of the public can ensure that the next child to be diagnosed doesn’t have to face living
with epilepsy alone. All groups can register for an organiser’s guide containing doodle cards, stickers, posters and money boxes. Teachers can access lesson plans and ideas through the National Doodle Day website. To order an organiser’s guide, enter the competition or to find out more visit nationaldoodleday.org.uk or call 0113 210 8800

Copley’s Column
There would have been no better pub in the country with better entertainment than the Victoria in Dronfield had last Thursday night. Diana Edwards, of top Abba tribute band Bjorn Again and duo Agnetha and Frida appeared with a surprise guest Cary Bayliss who accompanied her on guitar. Cary is legendary in these parts, not only as lead guitarist with top band Acoustic Angels, but also for co-writing songs with Gary Barlow and Elliot Kennedy. Diana gave her usual excellent performance, which was enhanced by guest appearances from fellow Bjorn Again songstress Sarah Fearnley, singing some great Abba songs, a spot from Dave Perkins who is a great tribute performer singing the songs of Michael Buble and Gary Barlow and finally a surprise performance from former top club singer Larry Anderson, who sadly had to take early retirement due to ill health. Not surprisingly, the pub was packed to the rafters, indicative of the quality of the wonderful entertainment. Quality acts have been booked for the next three weeks, with top female vocalist Emma Rossi appearing next Thursday followed on the following Thursdays by regular duo Acoustic Lily and a welcome return of Vincent. On Saturday night, we went to see one of my favourite bands Junkyard Dog, at a great pub, the Yew Tree at Coal Aston. The band consists of five very talented musicians, the most recent addition; Anthony Lomas on keyboards is amazing and has given a new perspective to this extremely popular local band. Celebrity Big Brother this series is the best ever with some very attractive girls and some quite raunchy scenes, a love triangle and constant arguing between Jim Davidson and Linda Nolan who have a long history of animosity towards each other. I am ashamed to say that this great reality show is compulsive viewing for me, not surprising as
I am a regular viewer of Jeremy Kyle. Sheffield Wednesday continued their unbeaten run by following the six nil thrashing of Leeds United with a comprehensive win over Macclesfied in the F.A. Cup and a creditable draw away against high flying Burnley, where we were by all accounts denied a penalty decision. Local teams at the wrong end of the Championship table, Barnsley and Doncaster both had much needed wins, whilst Rotherham United go from strength to strength. Sheffield United, on the other hand, remain in the doldrums after surrendering a two goal lead against Bradford City, and are dangerously close to the relegation places.

ARENACROSS RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD
Following a sold out tour in 2013 Arenacross is back, this time stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on Saturday 15th February 2014. Tickets purchased online and through the ticket hotline are priced £11 - £42.90 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £10.50 - £40.95 including booking fee. Earlier this year four of the UK’s top venues were rocked by Arenacross’ family-friendly killer mix of all-action indoor dirt bike racing and gravity defying Freestyle Motocross set to a pumping soundtrack and laser show and now promoter e22 Sports is back with another three-hour, non-stop white-knuckle ride! This time around e22 Sports is building on the solid foundations laid in 2013 and upping the stakes by visiting three amazing new venues and rolling out a seven-round series that travels from Belfast to London via stopovers in Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield. The throttle-twisting, adrenalin-charged indoor offspring of Motocross, Arenacross takes the most spectacular elements of outdoor MX, boils them down into a concentrated cocktail and then shoehorns them into arenas onto purpose-built dirt tracks. Racing is short, sharp and shockingly spectacular with huge triple jumps, murderous mogul sections and fast, banked corners all designed to provide a high-octane sensory feast. With Freestyle Motocross the competition takes place 40 feet above the track with riders hitting purposebuilt ramps and then attempting to out-do each other as they whip and back-flip 100kg motorcycles in a death-defying display of aerial gymnastics. Once considered MX mavericks, freestylers are now highly-paid sporting stars who compete in year-round world tour events such as the X Games and Red Bull X-Fighters. “The fans went mad for Arenacross this year,” says e22 Sports Managing Director Matt Bates, “and I was determined to take it to Sheffield which has such a rich tradition of indoor racing. It’s such a vibrant, exciting, colourful sport and Sheffield is the perfect city to showcase this incredible show. After the success of this winter’s all new Arenacross series it made sense to increase the tour to take in more cities and I’m really pleased to have added Sheffield as well as Newcastle and London’s infamous Wembley Arena for 2014”. We’re aiming to hit 50,000 spectators over the winter in a showcase of indoor racing and Freestyle action and what better place to do it than the comfort of an arena.” The 2013 Arenacross tour was an amazing success, selling out venues across the country, turning on a new mainstream family audience to the joys of AX and showing established fans the true potential of the sport. And if you took in a show this year, prepare to have your mind blown all over again in 2014 as e22 Sports. Confirmed so far…… Freestyle Motocross legend Edgar Torronteras has confirmed he’ll be jumping at all seven rounds of the 2014 Arenacross tour as well as Bry MacKenzie, Kristian Whatley, Steven Clarke, Adam Chatfield, Elliott Banks-Browne, Tyler Villopoto, Angelo Pellegrini, Brad Anderson, Dylan Woodcock, Fabien Izoird, Graeme Irwin, Todd Kellett, Gregory Aranda & Jamie Law & Daniel McCoy. Tickets are on sale in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk
COMPETITION We have kindly been given a pair of tickets for us to give away to lucky readers to witness this amazingly entertaining show. All you have to do is send your name and a daytime telephone number to info@mercurynewspaper. co.uk or via post to Arenacross 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before noon on Friday 31st January. Winners are drawn at random

Lucky Crystals & Healing Crystals for the New Year We could all do with a bit of luck this year! Good luck can come in many different forms. cheer you a little. If you suffer from Insomnia put the gem under your pillow or even wear it to bed. (Again please consult your doctor with any health issues.) Egyptian cultures would bury their dead with Lapis Lazuli, and believed that it offered protection and a pleasant journey to the afterlife. This beautiful gem is a pleasure to wear when you need a pick me up. Green Jade I always associate Jade with the Chinese culture as they use Jade to protect the spirit of the deceased. They put a Jade crystal under the tongue of the deceased to ensure a peaceful and safe journey to the afterlife. The Native Americans used the stone to treat kidney disease. It is still used today to strengthen the heart, lungs and kidneys. Purple Amethyst This little gem is an all-rounder. A valuable gem that can treat a variety of ailments. If you rub your temples with Amethyst it will relieve headaches and migraines. The stone was a favourite among the Romans and Greeks and a common belief was that Amethyst could help a person stop drinking .The Greek word Amethystos means ‘not drunken’.
Green Aventurine Green Aventurine is known as the stone of chance or luck. Keep Aventurine in your purse and remember to have it close by when you purchase your lottery ticket. Try rubbing the stone on your ticket for extra luck. Aventurine also has healing properties. Place the Aventurine next to your skin to receive maximum Orange Carnelian benefits. Mercury Beauty by Andrea Barton - Lawrence
Last week we looked at cheap beauty treatments using Vaseline, and we briefly mentioned olive oil. This week I have done some research via the web which has allowed me to compile a brilliant list of helpful tips based around just one product, olive oil. Remember this product will not suit everyone and so I suggest a patch test before use. If you are going out in the sun remember any oil will make you burn. Always use sun protection. Life without olive oil would be sad indeed. Since antiquity, this miracle substance has been revered for its wonderfully fruity flavour, but it’s so much more than a healthy topping for salad and a heavenly dip for fresh-baked bread. Olive oil has dozens of unusual uses around the house but we will focus on its powerful moisturizing and healing properties on the hair and skin. Check out reasons why you should never be caught with out it. Paint clean-up When your hands are covered in paint, sap or any other sticky substance that’s hard to remove, try scrubbing them with olive oil and a little salt or sugar. The paint will come right off and your skin will be soft and exfoliated.

Eye makeup remover Even the heaviest, drag-show-worthy makeup job can’t stand up to the removal power of olive oil. Dab a little on a cotton pad and your eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara – including waterproof formulas – will wipe right off. Skin moisturizer You might think using olive oil as a moisturizer would leave you with oily skin, but that’s not the case. to 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil and you’ve got a custom bath oil that will gently scent and moisturize your skin. Smooth shave Slick and moisturizing, olive oil will help your razor glide along your skin for a super-close, smooth shave with fewer nicks. Hair treatment Sure, you could buy a fancy commercially-prepared hot oil treatment for your hair – or you could just grab the bottle of olive oil that’s already sitting on a shelf in your kitchen. Apply a few tablespoons of warmed olive oil to damp hair, massage into the scalp and rub through the ends, then leave it on for thirty minutes to an hour. The oil will clean and condition the scalp, soften the hair and help the cuticles lay down flat for a sleek look. Chewing gum remover Whether your child comes home from school with a mass of sticky pink bubble gum in her hair or you find yourself the victim of a wayward wad, you don’t have to resort to any crazy tricks or – gasp – scissors to get it out. Apply olive oil to the gum and the surrounding hair, leave it on for five to ten minutes and then pull the gum out. Psoriasis and nappy rash treatment Olive oil soothes itchy, burning, irritated skin and may help rashes heal. Apply it to a baby’s nappy rash or directly to any eruptions on your own skin for quick relief. Consuming olive oil on a regular basis may also be helpful in the treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis. So next time your dribbling oil on your salad just take a second to admire this versatile product! The Anvil Strikes Up £12,000 for Charities! When landlord Tom Delaney, together with partner Brigitte Colwell, took over The Anvil pub on Stannington Road, Sheffield, they had no idea what their customers would do to raise money for charity.
The pub has raised an amazing £12,000 for various charities over the past year: Chris Warburton and ex Sheffield Wednesday players John Pearson and Gavin Oliver raised almost £6,000 for Weston Park Cancer Appeal by doing the Sheffield Half Marathon. Ian Oxley raised £1,800 for Lilly’s Wish to Walk, and landlady Brigitte Colwell took part in the Great North Run for Cystic Fibrosis, shortly after moving into The Anvil; raising over £500 which a number of ‘locals’ contributed to. The year was topped off by the fantastic Anvil Calendar girls Calendar 2014, which was produced to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice. The calendar was the brainchild of
one of the pub’s former barmaids, Leanne Cavanagh, who wanted to give something back to St Luke’s for their role in making her grandmother’s last few months so comfortable. Leanne, together with Brigitte and eight other wonderful Anvil girls, bared their all to help raise money for St Luke’s. The calendar was launched at a charity auction event at The Anvil at the end of November, and the sale of the calendars together with the charity auction raised a fantastic £3,360. This is an amazing achievement, given the current economic climate, and is testament to the continuing generosity of the pub’s ‘locals’ who never hesitate to dig deep and give. Tom and Brigitte are proud to say to all their customers and staff alike, “YOU are the beating heart of this little community pub in Stannington”. And the fundraising doesn’t end here. Landlord Tom Delaney is determined

What is independent advocacy? In 2008 OPAAL worked with thirty national organisations all interested in supporting older people get their voice heard over all matters affecting their lives. We developed and then adopted the following definition:Advocacy supports and enables people who have difficulty representing their interests, to exercise their rights, express their views, explore and make informed choices. Independent Advocacy supports the person regardless of the demands and concerns of others. It challenges the causes and effects of injustice, oppression and abuse and upholds human rights. (OPAAL National Forum 2008) What difference can it make? Some older people struggle to cope with decision making when there are often too many complicated decisions to be made. The new personalised approach to health and social care provision can leave individuals floundering and unsure. Traditional methods of providing support such as quickly sourcing day care and arranging home care now seem overly complicated by form filling and self-assessment. How many older people do you know who understate their ill health or incapacity to carry out basic tasks? Too often this can result in older people receiving far fewer services than they really need to live independently, leading to premature hospital and care home admissions and/or exhausted and stressed family carers. Independent advocacy can make a world of difference. The support of someone who is there to listen and take the side of no-one but the older person ensures that the older person retains their dignity and control over their own lives; so often seemingly lost these days. We only need to read documents like the Frances report on Mid Staffs hospital or the Serious Case Review carried out after the shocking ill treatment at Winterbourne View to see that things need to change. Independent advocacy won’t cure all ills in the care and support of vulnerable older people but it will help. It was independent advocacy that enabled Frank and Lynn to find a way through the maze of services to uncover what was available. It allowed them to get the care package Lynn needed and ensured that Frank got some respite when he hadn’t been out on his own in 5 years. You can watch Bob on the website talking about how Margaret, his advocate, gave him the support and strength he needed to fight the injustice that happened after his wife went into residential care. Why not listen to independent advocate Carolyn talk movingly about her support for John as he sought the right care home to move to following the death of his wife and his own diagnosis of vascular dementia. You can also read how Betty’s independent advocate supported her to successfully challenge the decision that reduced her personal budget and meant she could no longer afford to employ her personal assistant for as long as previously. These are stories of real people, all supported by independent advocacy when they needed it most. See these at http://www.opaal.org.uk/ What is OPAAL? OPAAL is the only national UK membership based organisation supporting, promoting and developing the provision of independent advocacy services for older people. Our members have empathy with, and an understanding of the things affecting the lives of, older people. Find out more about us on our website and to learn about our latest innovative project supporting older people affected by cancer please read our blog. DONʼT LET YOUR PARENT BECOME A “WINTER DEATH” STATISTIC Last year, some 31,000 “excess winter deaths” were recorded: mostly elderly people, who had succumbed to health conditions brought on by cold weather. Now advice website www.myageingparent. com is asking families with elderly relatives to do all they can to prevent their loved one from being one of this year’s statistics. “Each year we see an appalling and mostly unnecessary –death toll,” says the website’s co-founder Deborah Stone. “You only have to look at the statistics in other, colder countries to realise that many of these deaths can be avoided.”
So what is the advice available on the site? “We’ve put together a simple check list of ten things,” says Deborah, “some of which may seem obvious. But if every family in the country helped their parents follow these precautions, thousands of lives could be saved.” • Get a free seasonal flu jab. Not only is seasonal flu unpleasant, but it can also cause serious illnesses, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. The elderly and those with long-term health problems are most at risk. They should contact their GP, or talk to their pharmacist to arrange a jab, which is free for those aged 65 and over, and for those with other health risks. Family carers of elderly and disabled people can also qualify for a free jab. • Try to avoid catching or spreading colds or flu. Everyone should cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing - including visitors and relatives. Used issues should be thrown away as soon as possible and your parents and should be encouraged to wash their hands regularly, taking a hand sanitiser gel when they are out and about. • Stock up on cough and cold remedies, so they have them to hand if they suddenly feel ill. • Eat healthily and regularly to keep up energy levels and immune systems - and so help fight infection. Plenty of hot food and drinks are essential, as are the

“five a day” – which can also be obtained through tinned and frozen food. Keeping a good stock of these will prevent elderly people having to go out in icy weather. • Stay active. Even moderate exercise can bring health benefits. If possible, encourage your parent to move around at least once an hour, but remember to speak to their GP before they start on any exercise plan. • Dress for the weather. Wearing lots of thin layers – clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres are particularly good and help to maintain body heat. • Electric blankets are excellent at keeping older people warm, especially those specifically designed to be kept on all night – but they do need to be tested every three years. • Make the house as energy efficient as possible - both to keep it warm and reduce the incidence of damp. There are grants available under the “ECO” arrangements to insulate older people’s walls and lofts for free. Remember that loft insulation can reduce in thickness over time, and 270mm is now recommended. Draught proofing can also help – but do ensure that there are flows of air through the house to ensure damp is not retained. • Make sure at least one room is kept warm. This needs to be between 18 and 21°C (65-70°F). If it is impossible to keep all the rooms warm, heat the living room during the day and the bedroom before bedtime. Draw curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside the rooms and make sure that radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. • Claim allowances and benefits: Ensure your relatives are receiving all the financial help to which they are entitled, helping them to heat their home adequately. These include the tax-free Winter Fuel Payment, available to those who have reached the woman’s State Pension age, which varies according to when you were born. The Winter Fuel Payment is worth £200 for households with someone who qualifies aged up to 79, or up to £300 for someone aged 80 or over. The Warm Home Discount scheme, a discount of £135 on energy bills, is also available to help low-income and vulnerable households.

JUNIOR WARDENS DELIVER WINTER GOODIES TO LOCAL RESIDENTS Junior Wardens from Mundella Primary School have been delivering winter hampers to elderly and vulnerable people living in their community. The Junior Wardens project has been running for three years in partnership with Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Police, the Fire Service, Mundella Primary School and local Tenants and Residents Associations (TARAs). The project aims to educate the young wardens about the impact of anti-social behaviour on their communities, fire safety, caring for the environment, staying safe and working within the community. Cllr Harry Harpham, Cabinet member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, said: “This is a fantastic initiative which we have supported with our partners for the last three years. As part of their learning the Junior Wardens complete a project that involves supporting their local community. They are currently
delivering winter hampers to vulnerable and elderly tenants and residents. They’ve done a great job.” Janet Royston, Treasurer of Brindley TARA said: “The Junior Wardens have worked very hard to put these hampers together and deliver them to those who need them. I think they are a great example to other children their age.” Daniel (age 11), Junior Warden, said: “I’ve really enjoyed making the winter hampers and meeting the people we gave them to. The hampers include helpful things for older people such as food and toiletries. Donations came from my friends at school, Brindley and Heeley TARAs and people who work at the Council. We also got a thank you card from the TARAs which was really nice.” For more information about the Junior Warden scheme please email Sheffield City Council on councilhousing@sheffield.gov.uk or call 0114 293 0000.

BRITAIN’S BEST BEER CITY A SIGN OF THE TIMES
America’s most iconic newspaper has championed Sheffield as one of the top places to visit and enjoy a pint of home brewed real ale this year alongside some of the world’s most beautiful locations. Owners of the Fat Cat and Kelham Island Tavern can expect standing room only this year thanks to the New York Times which has included the treasures in its ‘52 Places to Go in 2014’ list. Yorkshire – and a special reference to Sheffield as ‘Britain’s best beer city’ – features alongside some of the world’s most exclusive and once-in-a-lifetime destinations such as Cape Town, Nelson Mandela’s inspiration during his imprisonment and World Design Capital of the year, the rugged shores of Albania, the epic biodiversity of Ecuador, the grand Vatican and beautiful shores in
north California. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We all know Sheffield is a fantastic place to live and visit and finally it has been recognised internationally by one of the world’s most wellknown newspapers! “We are thrilled to be mentioned alongside other Yorkshire hotspots and hope the special mention of our booming brewing industry will encourage more people than ever before to come and enjoy a pint in God’s own county.” Sheffielders will be able to sample Sheffield’s brewing expertise from 12 to 15 March 2014 when the Society of Independent Brewers return to iceSheffield for their annual BeerX event. There is an exciting array of other events coming to Sheffield this year too, including the second stage of the Tour de France on 6 July. More than 250,000 people are expected to watch the event on Sheffield streets and hundreds more local people will be volunteering as Tour Makers. Across the Yorkshire region there will be a number of large scale participation cycle rides and a 100 day cultural festival with further events taking place in the city during that time. The annual ‘Places To Go’ list is compiled by the newspaper’s travel journalists and contributing writers from across the globe. Yorkshire is mentioned alongside other British gems such as Scotland and Cartmel in the Lake District.
PUBS, BARS AND RESTAURANTS FACING AN EXTRA £100 MILLION TAX BILL The Call Time On Duty campaign is claiming that British pubs, bars and restaurants could be £100 million worse off under Government plans to hike alcohol taxes. Just months after Chancellor George Osborne pledged support for hardworking owners of pubs, cafes and restaurants he is preparing to saddle them with an ADDITIONAL £100m tax bill in March’s Budget through the Alcohol Duty Escalator - or the alcohol super tax. Pubs, bars and restaurants already contribute around £3.5bn in alcohol duty a year. The figures were uncovered by the Call Time On Duty campaign using the G o v e r n m e n t ’s own revenue forecasts. Whisky Association and The TaxPayers’ Alliance, is calling for the Chancellor to scrap the Alcohol Duty Escalator (ADE) in the March Budget to help British businesses. Independent research from Ernst & Young found that removing the escalator would actually boost Government finances by £230 million and create around 6,000 new jobs. Miles Beale, Chief Executive of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association said: “George Osborne has committed to helping pubs, bars and restaurants. He can do so this March by abandoning plans to hike up their tax bill. Calling a halt to the alcohol super tax and ending the duty escalator will help businesses, improve Government finances and create jobs. It’s time to call time on duty.” The ‘Call Time On Duty’ campaign is urging supporters to email their local MP and ask them to write to the Chancellor through the www. calltimeonduty.co.uk website calling for the alcohol super tax to be scrapped in the upcoming Budget.

VOICE OF THE MAGIC AT NIGHTINGALE THE MOVIES RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
It may well be the time of year for cuddling up in the cinema of an evening? Over Christmas I took my girlfriend and her son to see the latest Hobbit movie, and as ever was drawn in watching some of the trailers for the big blockbusters coming up in the weeks and months ahead. Plus, I was huddled up with a hot dog and a big bag of popcorn, as ever of course! Last Vegas, starring Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Robert DeNiro, is currently doing the rounds and sounds and looks very good to me. It is of course awards season as well with lots of films coming under the spotlight ahead of the Oscars and Bafta awards. Don’t forget that if you are a Magic listener and you sign up to become a VIP you will qualify for ‘2 for 1’ entry, meaning 2 people can be admitted for the price of 1 ticket to watch any standard 2D film at Sheffield’s “easysearch is a great idea and Cineworld cinema on the just as good as Google for the Centertainment complex on a results! TUNE YOUR PERFORMANCE
The Ecclesfield based Fitness facility officially opened its doors last week, culminating with a VIP night where Sheffield born and bred - former World boxing champion Johnny Nelson cut the ribbon to mark an incredible first week. Already the equipment has been tested to the full by the likes of Football and cricket teams in fitness sessions, triathletes and cyclists flocking to use the British cycling endorsed watt bike, new members taking part in the signature classes and the very popular MOT and Box-fit bootcamps. The 30 metre astro turf has been well and truly christened as the body mechanics have put members through their paces: FLIPPING tyres, LIFTING power bags, PULLING weighted sledges, PUSHING prowlers or simply JUMPING along it’s length. Fitness Garage, positioned down Station Road near Morrisons in Ecclesfield, is like no other gym in South Yorkshire. It is so unique, we’d even challenge you to find one similar in the UK. The new facility has been established by husband and wife Darren and Gemma Woodhead. Darren’s background is with the military and he currently works as an international bodyguard for a high-profile client. Gemma has been fitness training since a young age and has been fitness and gym manager at several establishments. They are joined by a crack team of experienced, dedicated professionals. Each specialises in their own fields and is fully trained in the latest thinking in body conditioning, helping you speed your metabolism, burn body fat and build strength. Sports massage for professionals and amateurs, hairdressing, spray tanning and nail services are also available. “We want to create a community feel with a non intimidating, friendly atmosphere – somewhere that is not just for superhumans!” says Darren. “We’re incredibly proud of what we have already achieved but this is just the beginning. We have plans to introduce an outside area, running and cycling clubs, and much more – so watch this space.” You’re also invited to pop in anytime to have a look around and enquire about membership. Gemma, Darren and the whole team look forward to welcoming you soon. For information, including profiles on each of the body mechanics, visit www.fitnessgarage.co.uk Fitness Garage Unit 3a, Ecclesfield Industrial Estate, Station Road Sheffield S35 9YR Tel: 0114 4385531

WALK THIS WAY... AEROSMITH TO HEADLINE DOWNLOAD 2014 Preview: Download Festival 2014 By Kt Evans
And so it returns…the annual rockers mecca, this year Download Festival 2014 makes its triumphant comeback with a brutal vengeance. Announcing a wave of kick ass bands, acts and performers over 13-15th June, Donnington Park is transformed into a weekend of head banging mayhem (along with copious amount of Jagermeister, cider and one too many shots) to succumb to our favourite festival of the entire season. If you’ve ever been to Download Festival, you will appreciate just how much love we have to give for one of the world’s biggest celebrations of rock, metal, hardcore and punk. Having recently kicked off processions with an explosive taster line-up to tingle the taste buds of rockers across the globe, Friday 13th will be headlined by no other than metal legends Avenged Sevenfold. Masters of creating the darkest of brutal rock music, Avenged Sevenfold have sold more than eight million albums worldwide, not to mention releasing six studio albums, eighteen singles and headlining some of the world’s most hardcore stages. Friday 13th (unlucky for some ey!)
will also see Rob Zombie as chief headline support along with cock-rockers The Offspring. Famed for producing some of rocks most legendary tunes, The Offspring are all about one thing…entertaining their audiences. To the second day of festival madness, Saturday 14th June is to be headlined by Linkin Park. Anthemic, energetic and the unquestionable backbone of US rap rock, the band have sold 60 million albums worldwide along with a string of chart topping albums and singles. Along with these, Saturday 14th will also see Illinois rockers Fall Out Boy perform. Easily one of the most renowned punk groups of the last decade, Fall Out Boy are seen as the backbone of the ‘emo-pop’ worldwide scene with their anthemic pop punk repertoire. With a host of tracks to include ‘Dance Dance,’ ‘This Ain’t a Scene’ along with ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark,’ this four piece not only put on killer live shows, but have a back catalogue to match. Sunday 15th is all about one band alone… Aerosmith. Often referred to as the “America’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band,” the five piece are the ultimate legends of classic rock. Fronted by Steve Tyler, the band have appeared on VH1’s list of the 100 greatest bands of all time, have won four Grammy awards along with scoring an incredible 21 top forty hits. With 1996 hit “I Don’t Want To Miss A thing” potentially one of the best love songs ever written…we suggest you buy in a hefty packet of Kleenex…we have a feeling this is going to be emotional. For the complete line-up of download festival 2014 so far, check out the official website on www. downloadfestival.co.uk. See you in the pit!

MOUSE FORCE Review: Of Mice And Men - New Album ‘Restoring Force’ By Kt Evans
Drawing influence from the literary classic ‘Of Mice And Men’ by John Steinbeck in 1937, Californian hardcore clan Of Mice And Men may not be famed for supplying us with one of the best novels ever written, however they themselves are out to create their own history. Set to release their third studio album ‘Restoring Force’ on 27th January, the five piece from across the pond have turned a new direction with their best recording to date. Of Mice And Me – arguably one of the US’s most upcoming hardcore groups, the band, it seems… have grown up. Long gone are the brutally heavy beats, all-encompassing guitar riffs and ear splitting rhythmic sections to make way for a mature sounding set of tracks. Siting ‘Korn,’ ‘Slipknot’ and ‘groups which as a band we like to listen to’ as their primary influences, ‘Restoring Force’ draws from many aspects of the touring fellowships lives to amount to a belter of a release. Opening with ‘Public Service Announcement,’ typical Of Mice and Men melodies are present yes, however have
made way for an intricate sounding album opening. This is preceded by ‘Feels Like Forever’ and ‘Bones Exposed,’ the first single to be released of the album, which has worked perfectly to tantalise the taste buds of fans across the globe. The one factor which separates ‘Restoring Force’ from their previous 2012 album ‘The Flood’ is the addition of brand new member Aaron Pauley. This album is the first to include the cleans vocalists contribution, which is crystal clear throughout the eleven track release. Track “Another You” shows Of Mice and Men’s sensitive side which heavy emphasis on cleans vocals, contrasted to “You Make Me Sick” which sees Carlile spit out hardcore creams with haunting effect. Here we see how much of a step up Of Mice And Men have made since their previous albums, a dedication to their last year of writing, recording and personal development to have the confidence to release a track with such a vast difference from the typically ‘hardcore’ infiltration of their previous recording. Anthemic, mature and put together with triumphant success, ‘Restoring Force’ will undoubtedly take you by surprise, however in the best way possible. Of Mice And Men are set to embark on a full UK tour throughout April 2014, with support from Issues. For all the latest info including the latest on their new album, check out www.ofmiceandmenofficial.com .

angler’s corner
have never cast a float! Within a few seconds of the bait reaching the lake bed, initial twitches indicated fish in the swim and the red tip quickly sank away by Clint Walker from sight before I gently lifted into the first fish of I was talking to a fellow angler the other day the day. A pristinely silvered roach of about four and informed him I was going roach fishing as ounces was quickly unhooked and returned.... I really fancied a session of float fishing. His A few more maggots were flicked out each cast, and reply was to call me a ‘noddy’ and ask why I was a stream of handsized roach with the odd bigger fishing for a species which to quote; “...only go to one were all safely splashed back before the float about a pound”. WHAT!!!??? I’m sorry, but I’m buried and I hit solid resistance; carp! Seconds later, an angler, one who seeks to catch fish of many I was once more plumbing the swim and replacing different species from many varied waters and I my hooklink... Next cast, it happened again! Drastic enjoy it very much thank you! Asking him where action was required, so a few tiny pieces of crust he was fishing on the morrow, he told me his rods had been put away until summer “....when the were catapulted out to see if I could persuade the carp to move on which they quickly started to engulf carp switch on again”...... Arriving at a small Cheshire club water, I had a as they drifted away on the wind....good! quick wander around to find a comfortable peg After another hour of gudgeon, perch, roach and dropped in a few maggots I’d already ‘krilled’ and skimmers, temptation got the better of me; with Marukyu powder additives to give them a bit opportunities in angling are there to be taken of extra ‘kick’, added a pouch full of 2mm Jpelletz advantage of, and I had carp feeding on the surface and started to tackle up my float rod. As I did so, in January! I didn’t have a carp rod with me, so I I noticed a couple of carp patrolling the far bank quickly removed the float, tied a size 8 directly and hoped they wouldn’t bully any roach out of to the end of the line, added a pinch of crust and my swim. A small dart type float holding 3BB was dunked it for a few seconds to give casting weight quickly plumbed and shotted up, then cast gently to before dropping it on the nose of the bigger fish. the edge of an overhanging where I’d deposited my Unbelievably, it was almost instantly slurped away initial feed and left to settle. and I soon had my first carp in the net! Only a single I had a pair of wrigglers on a size 16 hook with the figure fish, perhaps struggling to reach five pounds, bulk of my shot around the float and a series of no.8’s strung down the line to allow the maggots to slowly but it was a carp (apparently they only switch on fall through the water in the hope of catching ‘on the when it’s warm?!) but surely I couldn’t get the other drop’. I love the finesse of float fishing for silver fish one too? I did; my second piece of crust was also and I think many anglers who choose to sit behind sucked in and another small carp lay in the folds of alarms are missing out; indeed I know anglers who my net....again it was only small, but I was pleased to take a superb net of silver fish, and bag a couple of bonus carp on unorthodox tactics in January. It can be done, so get out there and take advantage!

There is only seven weeks to go to the Cheltenham Festival and this Saturday will be the venue’s last meeting before the big one, with four races being shown on Channel 4. If we are lucky we might get to see Big Buck’s make his comeback appearance in the Cleeve Hurdle at 3.35. Cheltenham has three Grade 2 contests and a Grade 3 Handicap. Doncaster provides the complementary coverage on Channel 4 with three races including two Grade 2 events and the Listed former Great Yorkshire Chase Handicap (now the Skybet Chase) which is possibly the highlight of their meeting. Cheltenham: 1.50 freebets.com Trophy Chase (Handicap), Grade 3, 5yo+, 2m 5f: Champion Court is entered for this and for the following Argento Chase. It will be interesting to see where he runs as he must have a decent chance in either after his second to Captain Chris at Kempton a fortnight ago. There are plenty of others that also have good chances here however. These are (in no particular order): Shangani; Sew on Target; Double Ross; Kruzhlinin; Renard; Elenika; Ulck Du Lin; Rajdhani Express (ran on this day last year before winning at the Festival); Tap Night; Cedre Bleu; Our Mick; Silver Roque; and Rupert Lamb. A few of these are also entered for the Skybet Chase (3.15 Doncaster) so check on the day for where they run. Double Ross (also holding an entry for the 1.15 here) and Kruzhlinin are both seeking hat-tricks and are very much respected while Rajdhani Express’s fifth in the Paddy Power Gold Cup here in November, where he has several of these behind, highlights his chance. To narrow the list down to a final few I have used their last time out speed ratings in my system as a filter. This gives a shortlist comprising (in alphabetical order): Champion Court; Elenika; Kruzhlinin; Rajdhani Express; Renard; Sew on Target; Shangani; and Ulck du Lin, with my order of preference in this very competitive contest being: Kruzhlinin; Shangani; Sew on Target; Champion Court; Renard; and Ulck du Lin. 2.25 Argento Chase, Grade 2, 5yo+, 3m 1f 110yds: As mentioned above Champion Court must hold a leading chance if competing here. Others that make instant appeal are the Hennessy winner, runner-up, third and sixth: Triolo D’Alene; Rocky Creek; Theatre Guide; and Houblon Des Obeaux. The latter-named beat Triolo D’Alene by 9 lengths in the United House Gold Cup at Ascot in early November but had that form comprehensively turned around in the Hennessy where he finished 18 lengths adrift of Triolo D’Alene. Although a winner on left handed tracks, with recent form figures reading 4211 going right handed and 42746 going left handed, it is possible that Houblon Des Obeaux is a better horse going right handed. Last year’s Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase winner Rocky Creek beat Houblon Des Obeaux in that race and was making his seasonal re-appearance in the Hennessy where he probably just lacked absolute peak fitness when fading on the run-in. With some of the vanquished in that race having since won I think that the Hennessy form may prove to be the strongest in this line-up and although I do very much respect Triolo D’Alene, who received 4lbs from Rocky Creek when winning the Hennessy by 2 ¾ lengths, with an entry in the 2.05 hurdle race at Doncaster and a possible tilt at the Grand National on the agenda later for Triolo D’Alene, I quite strongly fancy Rocky Creek’s chances here. Restless Harry and Time for Rupert also enter the picture after posting decent times on their last outings. The order of preference therefore is: Rocky Creek; Triolo D’Alene (holds an entry for the Doncaster 2.05); Theatre Guide; Houblon Des Obeaux; Champion Court; Restless Harry

is: Red Sherlock; Aubusson; Irish Cavalier; Madness Light; Vaniteux; Creepy; and Carol’s Destrier. 3.35 Galliardhomes.com Cleeve Hurdle, Grade 2, 5yo+, 3m: Hopefully Big Buck’s will run here and will be in good physical order. I have almost given up hope of him being beaten and by one of my “value” selections, so he gets the nod to continue his sequence of imperious wins. He is not likely to start at a good price however. If Big Buck’s fails to show up (or is not at his best) the first reserve is Saphir du Rheu whose Lanzarote win showed him in a very good light indeed in my opinion. Of the others, cases might be able to be made for Reve de Sivola, Lie Forrit, Lienosus and Knockara Beau but Big Buck’s should be able to hold them at bay if ready for this. Doncaster: 2.05 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 3m 110yds: Interestingly Hennessy winner Triolo D’Alene has an entry in this. However the two that I think could dominate here are Sausalito Sunrise and Urban Hymn, both of whom have recorded excellent times when winning on their last outings on soft and heavy ground (respectively) at Haydock. I have very little between them on my ratings. Urban Hymn had previously finished second to Spirit of Shankly at that venue in another race run in a very good time while hat-trick seeking Sausalito Sunrise’s last win was a 2 ¾ length defeat of Matthew Riley and his last but one victory was a 3 length beating of Kris Spin at Chepstow. Madness Light has an entry here and deserves respect along with fellow hat-trick seeker The Last Samuri. Of the others some quite respectable times were recorded last time out by: Elmore Back; Timesremembered; Kaki de la Pree; Urano; and Mayfair Music. The vote goes to Sausalito Sunrise, by a whisker from (the much feared) Urban Hymn, with the next in order of preference being: The Last Samuri; Elmore Back; Timesremembered; Kaki de la Pree; Mayfair Music; and Urano. 2.40 OLBG.com Mares’ Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m 110yds: Annie Power is unbeaten and looks a very good mare. If she turns up she gets the call. However, if she fails to appear the nod would go to Donald McCain’s Doyly Carte. Alasi is the second reserve followed by Koolala, Blue Buttons, Hopeand, Legacy Gold and Cockney Sparrow. 3.15 Skybet Chase (Handicap), Listed, 5yo+ rated 0-155, 3m: After his last time out course and distance victory in a good time for the ground conditions Mart Lane gets the vote to score again at this track and trip. He seemed to have improved on his last run but may still have most to fear from Night in Milan, who beat him on his previous appearance here on these weight terms. Next best may be Pacha du Polder who recorded a strong speed rating when sixth to Gentleman Anshan at Stratford in May. After these the next reserves are: Solix; Gullinbursti; Kruzhlinin; Native Gallery; Niceonefrankie; and Baile Anrai. Selection summary (see above for reserves in the event of non runners): Cheltenham: 1.50 Kruzhlinin 2.25 Rocky Creek 3.00 Classic Move 3.35 Big Buck’s
Doncaster: 2.05 Sausalito Sunrise 2.40 Annie Power (if absent Doyly Carte) 3.00 Neptune Investment Management Novices’ 3.15 Mart Lane Good Luck! Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m 4f 110yds There are some pretty good and improving Novices in this line-up. David Pipe’s Red Sherlock has a perfect Last week’s results: 5 from 5 in his career so far and is unbeaten in two After withdrawal of non runners the final selections tries over hurdles. Irish Cavalier has won his last three for last week were: races. Aubusson and Madness Light are both seeking Ascot: hat-tricks here while Carole’s Destrier and Classic 1.50 Carole’s Spirit – 2nd @ 3/1 Move both won last time out but Rathvinden fell on 2.25 Imperial Leader – 2nd @ 8/1 his last outing at Warwick (and might have had his 3.00 Theatrical Star – 3rd @ 9/2 confidence dented by that) where Creepy finished 3.35 Hidden Cyclone – 2nd @ 4/1 a remote fifth to Deputy Dan. Nicky Henderson’s Vaniteux posted a good time on his last outing also. Course and distance winner Aubusson should Haydock: have little to fear from Carole’s Destrier and Regal 2.05 Zamdy Man – won @ 7/2 Diamond whom he beat on his last two appearances. 2.40 Ifandbutwhynot – 5th @ 16/1 Although all of the above are respected the nod goes 3.15 Night Alliance – pulled up (8/1) to Donald McCain’s Classic Move, based largely on After a bout of “placeditis” at Ascot the financial his third at Haydock to Spirit of Shankly in a race outcome from last week’s selections was a 2.5 point run at a good clip in the conditions. The reserve order loss to one point level stakes.

THAT HAS TO BE THE BENCHMARK Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his sides 3-0 victory over Wigan Athletic. “We’ve shown what we are capable of when we get our players back fit. We felt all along that we are a good team and I’ve been making myself look a little bit stupid by saying the performances have been good and we keep getting beat. “I said to the players, fantastic performance, I am delighted with them, but that has to be a benchmark for the rest of the season now. “All of a sudden, a result like that can really kick you on, I think having Tamas and Meite at the back, Bongani Khumalo back fit, James Husband back fit, Paul Keegan back fit, James Coppinger back fit, there is a lot of players in there who make us better. “We have to keep it going now, we’ve had great results against Leicester, Forest and QPR and not really backed it up, but I believe now with the strength of the squad we will do that. “I think a lot of the boys who came in have to take credit.”

County Senior League Once again Mother Nature disrupted the County Senior Football League’s fixture list. As well as a number of League fixtures; the Association Cup Quarter Final between North Gawber Colliery and Hallam Reserves, and the League Cup Quarter Final between Handsworth and Kingstone United also fell to the weather. It is in fact the second time that these cup fixtures have been postponed. Premier Division Just one game went ahead in the Premier Division, with leaders Oughtibridge WMFC hosting mid-table Athersley Recreation Reserves. The two teams met on the first day of the season, with Athersley grabbing a hard-earned point on that occasion. Yesterday Athersley showed the same degree of application, but sadly for them they fell to a 2-1 loss this time. Oughtibridge now have a whopping 14 point lead at the top of the Premier Division, but they have played a few more games than all their nearest rivals.

GAFFER PRAISES READY FOR ACTION VICTORY... Rotherham United boss Steve Evans was full of praise for his side after a first-half blitz secured a 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow. Tom Hitchcock opened up his Millers account with a goal on his full debut after just nine minutes, before Ben Pringle added a superb second and James Tavernier scored a third to stun the hosts. After the game Evans was full of praise for his side: “This is always a hard place to go but you have earn the right to play and when we work as hard as we have done today then we usually win. We don’t kid ourselves, we know how hard it is to come away from home and win in League One. “We work hard every day on passing and moving the ball around the final third and we did that really well in the first half hour. We said second half don’t take any chances, keep the ball and when we have good possession let’s see what we can do and they followed that to the letter.” Evans commended all areas of his team but in particular two of his new signings Miles Addison and Tom Hitchcock. “Anyone who is in the ground today will tell you how good Miles Addison was today,” added Evans. “He was totally dominant in both boxes and the kid will only get better. I was pleased with the contribution of all my team I don’t really want to single people out because there were all very good today. “Tom worked incredibly hard. He got his goal, it was a great header as well. His all round contribution in and around the box was excellent, everytime it went into him you thought it was going to be a goal.” The Millers were missing Kari Arnason and Evans explained his absence. “He couldn’t train yesterday and he called in with sickness,” Evans explained. “He wanted to give it overnight but we travelled the day before, so I made the decision that we are not about Kari Arnason we are about Rotherham United. We will always miss a player of Kari Arnason’s quality and we hope to see him bouncing into training on Monday.”
Rotherham United’s newest addition Blair Turgott is looking to continue the Millers’ good standing in the league, after joining them as they occupy the third play off position. Turgott, an England youth international joined the Millers just over 24 hours prior to the trip to Shrewsbury and the winger explained the late night journey that brought him to South Yorkshire. “I left the West Ham training ground at about 4 o’clock, got home, packed my bags and got out on the road,” Blair told Millers Player on Friday morning. “I don’t know a lot about Rotherham but I know that they got promoted with Bradford last season of course. I did some research after my Development Manager told me there was interest and they were doing well. They’ve got some good wins and I just want to keep that run going.”

strengthened their position at the summit of the table with a 4-2 home victory over Thorpe Hesley. Dean Conway shone for the Joker bagging a brace. The Joker have won eight of their last nine league games. On Joker’s tail are Silkstone, who despite a Tom Adams penalty, were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Thorncliffe. Silkstone have won only one of their last six league games, but are only three points off the lead (having played two games more). Wickersley climb into third place, following an impressive 6-0 home win over bottom-side Davy FC. The win ends a run of six league games without a win for Wickersley, who are now five points behind the Joker’s lead. Jake Schofield scored twice to inspire Penistone Church Reserves to an entertaining 6-3 win over Rotherham Town at the Memorial Ground. The win takes Penistone into fifth position in the table, and is their fourth win in their last five league games. South Kirkby Colliery brought to an end Sheffield Bankers recent resurgence, with a 3-2 win over them at Davy Sports Ground. The result means South Kirkby have completed the league double over the Bankers this season, as they won the reverse fixture 3-0 back in September.
they climbed back into fourth place in the table. Kiveton Park and New Bohemians played-out a rare goalless draw at Stone Close. Charles Hollamby stood-out for New Bohemians as they won a hard-earned point. U21 Division Alex Lill of Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 followed up last weeks’ brace against North Gawber Colliery U21, with a hat-trick against Millmoor Juniors U21 on Saturday. Adam Powell and John Baines were also on target for Swallownest as they claimed a 5-1 home win over Millmoor Juniors U21. The win extends Swallownest’s lead at the top of the U21 Division to six points. Danny Walsh scored twice for Swinton Athletic U21 to inspire them to a 3-0 home win over mid-table Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21. The win is Swinton’s second in the league this term, but sadly is not enough to lift them off the foot-of-the-table.
Meadowhall League S&HCFA Senior Cup Quarter Final 21 year old Alex Torr starred for Rawson Spring, scoring a hat-trick, as they beat Brunsmeer Bradway AJW 6-3 at HSBC Sports Club. since November, with a 3-2 win over The Devonshire at Warminster Road. The reverse fixture was also full of goals, with The Devonshire taking the points on that occasion with a 4-3 victory. Division One Packhorse Inn were 5-0 winners away against HSBC on Sunday, thanks to braces from both Paul Lavender and Niall Smith. Packhorse have lost only one of their last eight league games, and climb into second place with this win. Two goals from Richard Ellin inspired City Taxis to an impressive 3-1 away win over high-flying Hurlfield. The loss means Hurlfield slip to third, and have lost two of their last three league games. Tim Council was once again the difference for Penistone Church, scoring a four goal haul in their 6-2 win over struggling Intake Ball Inn at Warminster Road. Penistone Church remain second bottom flowing the win, but now sit four points in front of bottom-side Intake. U21 Division Abbey Lane U21 ended Sheffield United Junior Blades U21’s 13 game winning streak in the league, by holding them to a 2-2 draw at East End Park. It is only the second time that the Blades have dropped points (both draws) this season. However, the Blades are still 23 points clear of second placed Abbey Lane, but have played four games more.

BLADES LET TWO GOAL HOME LEAD SLIP AWAY MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
This fixture lived up to its Yorkshire derby billing and honours were even after 90 minutes of hard graft. The Blades raced into a 2-0 half-time lead with goals from Jamie Murphy and Harry Maguire but Gary Jones and James Hanson levelled after the break. Despite losing the lead, Blades fans applauded at the final whistle after an exhilarating, whole-hearted performance. Loanee Paynter was handed a home debut from the start as chief Clough made two changes from the previous week’s defeat. Murphy was recalled and Porter and Coady dropped to the bench. Bradford’s squad included three former Blades - Reid, Gray and Yeates. Within three minutes both sides had swung in a free-kick from the left and it was Bradford who went closest, Hanson meeting the delivery from Jones but Long was ideally placed. The visitors started well but were stung with the game’s first piece of quality, which arrived on eight minutes. An intricate passing move involving four Blades enabled McMahon the space he needed to drill a delivery low across the box to where MURPHY stole a yard on his marker to score. Bradford’s response was instant and they went close a number of times within the
next five minutes. Firstly, McLean’s effort was deflected wide by Maguire and then the same striker headed over the resulting corner. Soon after, from another Jones corner, Hanson’s powerful header struck the crossbar and the rebound, from McHugh, was cleared off the line by Baxter. The opening 20 minutes was all-action. Paynter had an effort blocked after Maguire and Collins challenged in the air and Baxter tried to get on the end of a McMahon cross after another neat passage of play from the Blades. To show the home side were also a threat at set-pieces, Maguire’s header from Baxter’s corner needed touching over the crossbar by McLaughlin, whilst around the half-hour mark there was a lengthy stoppage as Reid received treatment and was subsequently stretchered off, all four corners of Bramall Lane applauding as he left the field. One former Blade took over from another as Yeates was the replacement. United’s attacking prowess from corners was proved as the referee’s watch ticked around to 40 minutes. MAGUIRE again met Baxter’s corner and this time a combination of goalkeeper McLaughlin and Jones, positioned next to a post, couldn’t keep the ball out. The remainder of the half, including the four added minutes, saw the Blades on top. Baxter headed wide after Flynn linked up with Paynter and then McLaughlin scrambled across his line to keep out another Baxter shot. Also before the break, Murphy was crowded out in a scramble on the line and a Flynn shot was blocked. Like the first half, the second period began at a pace. Hanson and McLean
both failed to convert a Yeates cross and Baxter turned a centre from McMahon over. A bit of fortune then got the visitors back in the game, on 56 minutes. Hanson and McLean were both involved before a shot from JONES took a major deflection, wrong-footing Jones and spinning into the net. An effort from Yeates moments later also took a deflection, this time to Long’s benefit, but Bradford were soon level. Just after the hour, McGinn was penalised for a foul on McLean and from a Jones free-kick, Long diverted the ball at HANSON, the ball dropping in the net. Bradford’s second was the signal for the Blades to get back on top. With Flynn and Murphy both causing problems in wide areas, Porter replaced a tiring Paynter and now it was the visiting side’s time to be pressured. Flynn found McGinn, whose shot was turned around the near post by McLaughlin and from the resulting corner, Maguire’s flicked header was wide. Murphy beat Darby twice but saw his shot blocked, whilst further efforts from Flynn and McGinn saw last-ditch defending keep the ball out. Miller replaced an injured Baxter and a McMahon free-kick was wide. Late on there were penalty shouts at both end and Coady took over from McGinn. A Miller run, drawing the goalkeeper out of the goal, resulted in Murphy firing over from a difficult position. Five added minutes gave both teams hope of snatching a winner but after an entertaining fixture it was possibly the only five minute period where there wasn’t a chance!
BOSS POSITIVE
Nigel Clough refused to think negatively despite seeing his side pegged back to a 2-2 draw in a pulsating derby against Bradford City at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Speaking after the Gaffer remarked: “It was a brilliant game for the neutral, a cracking Yorkshire derby, but I can’t believe we didn’t walk away with all three points. “We thoroughly deserved to win the game, but again an untimely deflection and a bounce of the ball has denied us. “Bradford’s first goal changed the complexion of the game totally, it was an harmless, speculative effort that’s hit the heels of a defender and totally wrong footed George Long. “Their second goal is a great delivery into the box, we shouldn’t have given away the free-kick in the first place, but there wasn’t much we could do about the end result. “But our response their after was tremendous. Everyone would have expected the momentum to spur Bradford on for a winner, but we totally dominated the last 25 minutes.” Analysing both of the Blades goals, Clough put them down to work on the training ground, adding: “We have been encouraging Jamie Murphy to get in the box at the back post for weeks and when he does he will get goals. “We got into good positions on numerous occasions and sometimes you do need that break to go your way in the penalty area. “We worked on set-pieces during the week because with Bradford’s height it is one of their strengths, but it was lovely to see Harry Maguire back on the scoresheet from a corner.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 ON FORM MAGUIRE SECURES POINT MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk
From a lively, end to end Championship clash at Turf Moor, Wednesday emerged with a creditable point in the 1-1 draw. Striker Sam Vokes fired Burnley in front on the stroke of half time but the Owls hit back almost instantly, with Chris Maguire scoring his third goal in four games. The stalemate at Turf Moor keeps Wednesday’s good run in all competitions going – now without defeat in seven. The Clarets went into the game as the only remaining unbeaten side on home soil in the Championship, thus highlighting the size of the task facing Wednesday. And the home side nearly registered after ten minutes when ex-Owls loanee Keith Treacy saw his goalbound strike cleared away for a corner by Glenn Loovens. But Wednesday, who went into the clash in a rich vein of goalscoring form, created the best chance of the early exchanges.
Caolan Lavery – in his first start for the Owls – then shot just wide from the angle after receiving the ball from Wickham’s flick. Burnley, though, remained a danger going forward and had a clear cut chance midway through the opening period. Dangerman Danny Ings threaded through for Dean Marney but the midfield man placed wide with only Chris Kirkland to beat. Tom Heaton then denied Wickham’s fierce near post strike before Burnley struck first blood on the stroke of half time. Marney robbed possession from Jose Semedo and dinked over the top for Vokes, who poked the ball home past Kirkland. As Burnley looked to be heading into the break one goal ahead, Wednesday responded in the best possible fashion. Wickham whipped a dangerous ball into the mix and, after a touch from debutant Oguchi Onyewu, Maguire blasted home from close range to level. Burnley began the second half on top in
terms of possession but Clarets keeper Heaton had to remain alert as Lavery tested the ex-Manchester United man with a deflected effort after a quick counter by the visitors. Liam Palmer then denied Jones with an outstanding piece of defending, as the right back dropped back on the goal line to head clear with the goal gaping. The final 15 minutes were end to end and as Wednesday broke with Wickham and Maguire, the latter darted into the area and went down under a Jason Shackell challenge but the referee cautioned the Scot for simulation. The late pressure came from Burnley and Ings was at the heart of the action. The Clarets’ top scorer first hit a low strike from 12 yards that came crashing back off the post before the same man swivelled in the area, only to see Kirkland save well from close range. Still Burnley pressed as Ings blasted firmly on target in stoppage time but Kirkland was equal to the shot and tipped over the bar as the Owls claimed a valuable point over the Pennines.
Maguire’s low cross found Connor Wickham, who cleverly teed up Kieran Lee six yards from goal and just as the midfielder was set to pull the trigger, David Jones made a vital last-ditch recovery challenge. Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

IT COULD HAVE BEEN MORE MANAGERʼS VIEW www.swfc.co.uk
While satisfied with the performance and result at Turf Moor, Stuart Gray said the Owls might have taken more from Saturday’s game. It was honours even over the Pennines when Chris Maguire cancelled out Sam Vokes’ opener but the talking point was a penalty claim for the Owls late in the second half that was waved away. Maguire appeared to be tripped by Jason Shackell but the referee booked the Wednesday striker for simulation. Gray said: “I know Chris Maguire and he would not go down if he wasn’t touched. He was coming inside on his left foot and he will have wanted the shot, especially with the form he is in. “I tell the players that if they are to win penalties they should do it honestly.” In the bigger picture, though, Gray took pride from a spirited display as the visitors dug deep to post a point that extends Wednesday’s unbeaten run to seven games. He continued: “They have given absolutely everything today and credit to them. They deserve the rewards they are getting with the unbeaten run because they are simply working so hard. “They couldn’t have given any more today and any manager or coach can’t ask for anything more. “We have played a quality side today who are unbeaten at home and Sean Dyche has just said that is the best they have played all season. “But we have come away with a point and we deserved it. I wasn’t particularly comfortable in the last few minutes because they threw everything at us and went route one for a winner. “But we have held firm at the back and Chris Kirkland has made a super save right at the end to keep the score at 1-1. “I’d have been very disappointed to come away with nothing today because everyone has put in a proper shift.” Gray added that skipper Reda Johnson failed a fitness test on a hip injury on Friday and will be touch and go for the trip to Rochdale in the FA Cup next Saturday.
