STAGE SET FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF DAZZLING MAJOR EVENTS This year saw the highest-ever attendance at Out of This World, a packed-out Peace Gardens for the Christmas lights switch-on, thousands of art lovers enjoying Art in the Gardens, and the city coming alive with music of all genres at Tramlines. And with details of 2016’s events line-up currently being finalised, it’s set to be another very busy year for Sheffield City Council’s major events team. People from across the
globe are once again to descend upon the city for the World Snooker Championships, MADE and Doc/Fest, while Sheffield’s status as The Outdoor City will be cemented with Cliffhanger, Grand Prix cycling, the second running of the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon and SHAFF, the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival. All aspects of culture will be catered for, with the ever-popular Art in the Gardens through to Sensoria, the Sheffield
Food Festival and Chance to Dance. But there’s also some brand-new events to look forward to in 2016, such as the Sport Relief Flagship Games, which will take over the city centre in March, and the year-long “Year of Making” festival, which aims to showcase all that the city does best from advanced manufacturing to visual arts, theatre, music, crafts and more. Councillor SionedMair Richards, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at
Sheffield City Council, said: “2015 was a great year for events in Sheffield. Out of This World grew to be one of our busiest city centre events to date – second to only Tramlines – while the success of Allez Allez Sheffield brought professional cyclists and families together on two wheels. “It’s great to see that our major events programme is set to be ramped up again for 2016. With the Year of Making and with Sheffield being selected as one of just six cities

nationwide to host the Sport Relief Flagship Games – as well as the return of much-loved events across the city – it’s set to be a fantastic year. “This is really good news for families who enjoy getting out and about in Sheffield, for culture vultures, for food lovers, for music fanatics, for sports fans and also for businesses and the leisure industry in Sheffield, who are set to reap the economic benefits.” More information and updates on all events can be found on the Council’s website at www.sheffield.gov.uk

Golf day raises £24,000 for cancer charity in memory of friend A 100 hole golf day organised by the captains of Abbeydale Golf Club has raised £24,000 for its local cancer hospital thanks to matched funding from the May Hearnshaw Trust. The golf extravaganza, which saw 2 teams of 4 players take on the course from 4.30am in the morning on the 17th July, was supported by club members and professionals alike to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. To add to the already incredible total of £12,000 raised at the golf day, The May Hearnshaw Trust provided an

additional £12,000 of matched funding after Trustee, after they lost co-trustee Nick Wolstenholme to cancer earlier this year. The May Hearnshaw Trust, chose to support the 100 hole golf day after co-Trustee, Nick Wolstenholme died of a brain tumour in March 2015. Nick, who supported Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity long before his diagnosis after a friend was diagnosed with cancer, received treatment at Weston Park Hospital before sadly passing away earlier this year at the age of 52. As well as raising funds in support of the cancer charity himself, Nick also encouraged companies and groups across the region to raise funds for the hospital, which is the only dedicated cancer hospital in the region. Richard Law of The May Hearnshaw Trust said, "The May Hearnshaw Charitable Settlement made this donation to match Abbeydale Golf Club's fund raising in memory of our late friend and co-trustee, Nick Wolstenholme who sadly passed away in March 2015. Nick loved supporting charities such as Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, especially where we could match- fund to achieve greater benefit.” “We remember Nick's courage and forthrightness in dealing with the diagnosis of his brain tumour; he was always ready to joke and smile about it and called it his “Tuna”." Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said, “We are overwhelmed by the amount raised at the Abbeydale Golf Day and incredibly grateful to The May Hearnshaw Trust. “ “The money raised will fund vital projects within Weston Park Hospital to ultimately improve the lives of thousands of people fighting cancer across the region.” This year, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity needs to raise £1.8 million to fund a wide range of projects that help treat and care for cancer patients across the region. Donations made to its Christmas Star Appeal, sponsored by Napoleons Casino, will enable the charity to provide a range of treats this Christmas including Christmas dinner for patient’s relatives, a special gift for every patient, plus crackers and trimmings to make the big day as special as it can be. Donations to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s Christmas Star Appeal can be made via post, online at www.Christmasstarapppeal.org.uk or by texting WPCC15 followed by the amount you would like to donate (£1, £2, £3, £5 or £10) to 70070.

SHEFFIELD ARENA’S REVIEW OF 2015
ALBERT SNODGRASS
I bought my wife a bottle of Diesel for Christmas. A bargain at only 102p a litre! Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air! But then I think, how would I catch them? “Do you remember what day today is?” asked my wife. “Of course!” I replied. “...Happy Valenbirthsary!” “What do we want?” “Hearing aids.” “When do we want them?” “Hearing aids.” My boss stormed up to me in the office today and said, “You missed work yesterday, didn’t you?” “Not particularly,” I replied. A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Enzo, has cheated him out of £10 million. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Enzo would hear nothing that he might have to testify about in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Enzo about his missing $10 million, he takes along his lawyer who knows sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the £10 million is that he embezzled from me.” The lawyer, using sign language, asks Enzo where the money is. Enzo signs back, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” The lawyer tells the Godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you are talking about.” The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Enzo’s temple and says, “Ask him again!” The lawyer signs to Enzo, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him.” Enzo signs back, “OK. You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Bruno’s backyard in Woodbridge !” The Godfather asks the lawyer, “What did he say?” The lawyer replies, “ He says you don’t have the balls to pull the trigger.”

2015 was the Arena’s 24th year in showbiz and yet again another memorable season featuring the world’s biggest artiste’s, shows and sporting battles. Highlights from 2015 saw sell-out gigs from the likes of Olly Murs, Florence & The Machine, Queen & Adam Lambert, The Script, Mumford & Son’s, S Club 7 and of course the mighty Take That who played 3 sell out shows back in June. Sheffield legend Richard Hawley played to a packed Steel Hall back in November and fellow Sheffield rockers, Def Leppard are set to play to a sell-out home crowd on Saturday 19th December. One Direction played their final 3 live shows right here in Sheffield before going on their ‘hiatus’ from the world of music back in October. Fans flocked from all over the world for these momentus shows. 2015 also saw Clarkson, Hammond & May bring their high octane arena tour to the venue, featuring a mix of beautiful cars, breath-taking stunts as well as all the irreverent humour that fans know and love from the trio. The TV smash Strictly Come Dancing brought its Live Tour back to the Arena as did Disney On Ice, which is the only touring show to have played the venue every year since the building opened in May 1991, that’s over 280 performances seen by almost 1.4 million customers. Comedy acts came in the shape of 2 nights of laughs curtesy of the hilarious Michael McIntyre and a 6 show run of TV favorites Mrs Brown’s Boys. Hulkamanics and super fans of wrestling were given the chance to meet Hulk Hogan and gain an insight into his personal life and career during an UK exclusive evening with the man himself. André Rieu will be the last concert of 2015. The King of Waltz will make his Sheffield Arena debut with his Johann Strauss Orchestra for one night only on Monday 21st December. The Steelers turn the Arena into the House Of Steel every week throughout the ice hockey season and are still one of the most successful ice hockey teams in the country both on and off the ice.
So, into 2016 and the venue’s first event, as it has been for the past 20 years, is the Indoor Bike Trials with Sheffield hosting the only UK leg of this World series. Closely followed in February by Arenacross, where the Arena is transformed into an indoor motorbike dirt track with over 4000 tons of dirt laid on the Arena floor. Next year will be another bumper year and events already on sale include Strictly Come Dancing Live Thunder, Ellie Goulding, The X Factor Live Tour, 5 seconds of Summer, The Vamps, Bryan Adams, Lionel Richie & Andrea Bocelli. Little Mix are all set for 2 dates in April and US sensation Justin Bieber is expected to sell out his October date here in Sheffield within minutes of going on sale. Busted are set to make a comeback with the original line up in May. Matt, James and Charlie are returning to the road with a full UK arena tour, and they are working on brand new Busted music for the first time since 2004. Not to be missed, Dynamo will bring his Magician Impossible tour to the Arena in February playing in the intimate Steel Hall setting over 5 nights, wowing audiences with his mind blowing show. With family shows from the World’s most famous basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters, ice hockey from The Steelers, wrestling from WWE, plus the brand new 5 Star Wrestling event which will see Rey Mysterio take on AJ Styles in a truly historic dream match that has never been possible before now. Critically acclaimed “Comedy Superstar” Russell Howard returns to the live stage for the first time in three years with his biggest global tour to date – Round The World, which will be performed ‘in the round’, only the second time a comedy show has toured a center stage show. Arena General Manager Rob O’Shea says; “2015 has been another successful year for the venue. A personal highlight has been the success of the venue’s reduced capacity Steel Hall culminating in November’s home-town Richard Hawley gig. 2016 will be our 25th anniversary and we already have some of the world’s biggest touring artistes lined up to perform. It will also be a new era for the venue as Sheffield International Venues (SIV) take over the management of the venue in April 2016 and the search for a new naming rights sponsor will be at the top of everyones to do list next year”.

1200 PUBS ARE PROTECTED AS ‘ASSETS OF COMMUNITY VALUE’ More than 1,200 pubs will be celebrating the New Year with the added protection of being listed as an Asset of Community Value thanks to their local communities and Campaign for Real
Ale members. The number of pubs nominated as ACVs has doubled in the past six months, following the launch of a joint CAMRAGovernment initiative to protect England’s most valued pubs(1), which was announced by Pubs Minister Marcus Jones at this year’s Great British Beer Festival. CAMRA figures show that 1,200 pubs across England have been listed as ‘Assets of Community Value’ (ACV), which means they are protected from being demolished or converted to another use without planning
permission.. ACV nominations give local communities the power to safeguard valued local pubs from developers (2). CAMRA Branches and community groups across the country are now working hard to get 3,000 pubs listed as ACVs by the end of 2016 to help stem the number of pub closures, which currently stands at a rate of 29 a week. Tim Page, CAMRA Chief Executive says: “It is fantastic to see community groups across England coming together to protect 1,200 pubs across the country from redevelopment
or demolition. This figure is a testament to the effectiveness of putting power back into the hands of local communities and giving them a chance to have a say in shaping their town centres. We hope to more than double that figure by this time next year.” “ACV status also generates vital support for local pubs and highlights the wide variety of community-orientated events and activities that contribute significantly to local civic life. With 29 pubs closing every week we want to secure greater support for ACV listed pubs to ensure they continue to be at the

heart of our communities. With Christmas just around the corner – this is the perfect opportunity to share your support for your local by nominating it as an ACV”. Pubs Minister Marcus Jones added: “Our pubs remain at the heart of local life and CAMRA members have done their communities proud. We brought in community rights to allow people to list the local landmarks most important to their communities – allowing them a fair chance to bid for them should they be put up for sale. “Now listing might not be appropriate for all establish-

At the beginning of a new year people’s thoughts often turn to resolutions – whether it be a new job, a healthier lifestyle or a new way of living. And in Sheffield, almost 150 people are looking forward to a happier and healthier 2016 after signing up to a “Working Well” scheme, which aims to give help and support to those who are out of work, or have never worked, due to health reasons such as depression, anxiety and long-term conditions. Working Well links health and employment support closer than ever before, with referrals being made by GPs surgeries for the first time. The scheme, funded by the council and the Department of Work and Pensions, is being trialled for two years and is expected to help at least 345 people living in areas with the highest rates of health-related unemployment, paving the way to more effective support for more than 25,000 people in Sheffield who are unemployed for health reasons. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for public health and equality at Sheffield City Council, said: “We see people in our communities whose health is going downhill for want of a job. Existing conditions get worse and mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, are really common. At the same time, we know people’s health can improve when they are working. “We’re trying to link health and employment support more closely through this trial and to give people hope who might have felt like there wasn’t much left. This is just one of the many things we’re doing to tackle poverty and inequalities here in Sheffield, and try to make things better for people.” Sheffield’s Working Well is being trialled in the north east, east and central parts of the city. Progress is expected to be gradual as people tackle complex and long-standing issues. But already a boost in confidence is widely being reported
amongst those taking part, some of whom are seeking training and volunteer opportunities as an important step to get back to work. The support they receive includes one-to-one support to build confidence, motivation and positive thinking. It is provided by voluntary organisations Soar, Zest and Manor and Castle Development Trust who are working on behalf of the council and Jobcentre Plus. The pilot project is for people on Employment and Support Allowance whose illness or disability affects their ability to work. Referrals onto the scheme can be made directly by local GPs as well as work coaches at Jobcentre Plus.

CANCER CHARITY URGES SUPPORTERS TO KEEP GIVING OVER FESTIVE PERIOD The dedicated charity for the regions only cancer hospital is encouraging donors to think of those fighting cancer over the festive period by donating to its Christmas Star Appeal. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity launched its Christmas Star Appeal, sponsored by Napoleons Casino and supported by the Sheffield Star, back in November and says it is once again overwhelmed by the response received from local supporters. Fundraising Manger, Helen Gentle said, “Thanks to supporters across the region, we’ve raised an incredible amount of money which enables us to support cancer patients, not only throughout the festive season, but long into the future.” “So far this year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, the appeal has raised over £30,000 which will go towards funding pioneering research projects, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and support ongoing care provisions for patients and their families in the New Year” “Donations to the Appeal this year have also helped us to improve the festive season for those who sadly have to spend time in hospital over Christmas by enabling us to purchase small gifts and festive treats to help make the big day a little brighter for patients in hospital and their families. “If you’ve yet to make your Christmas donation it’s not too late, you still have time to join the hundreds of people who have already donated and chosen to support the crucial work of Weston Park Hospital at this special time of year. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Miss South Yorkshire 2015, who is also a Student Radiographer at Weston Park Hospital is supporting the cancer charity’s Christmas Star Appeal after seeing first-hand how donations to the charity can transform the lives of cancer patients. Stephanie Hill of Dore, Sheffield said, “'I am supporting the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Christmas Star Appeal not only because I am currently training there to become a Therapy
Radiographer in the Radiotherapy Department, but I also see the wonderful work that the staff and employees undertake on a daily basis. “I have experienced first-hand the benefits patients and their families will gain from the support the appeal will provide.” With half of all people born since 1960 expected to be affected by cancer in their life time, the cancer charity needs to raise over £1.8 million each year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep local patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. Donations to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s Christmas Star Appeal can be made via post, online at www.Christmasstarapppeal.org. uk or by texting WPCC15 followed by the amount you would like to donate (£1, £2, £3, £5 or £10) to 70070. Supporters are encouraged to support the appeal via social media channels Facebook and Twitter by submitting a photo with their silver stars using the hashtag #starselfie.
ELVIS IS BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND TO SHEFFIELD CITY HALL FOR THE 3RD YEAR RUNNING Chris Connor returns with his live 12 piece energetic band 'THE STEELS' to the Sheffield City Hall next year on Saturday 24th September recreating two huge concerts from Elvis in the 70's in the huge Elvis Show production 'The World Famous Elvis Show'. The show respectively and authentically recreates The King at his very best and you will feel that you have been transported back in to time. If you were not lucky enough to see Elvis live you will walk away from this concert feeling
that you have! Many Elvis fans are left emotionally moved when they leave the show. There is only ONE Elvis Presley, however fans all around the world are talking about Chris Connor who is remarkably so very very close to Elvis in both looks and voice and mannerisms. Chris Connor’s manager, Lisa Matthews says “Chris has built a huge following all around the world. He is shy and very humble off stage, however on stage he transforms into Elvis, it can be at times very spooky. Chris makes sure that his tribute is respectful at all times, and as authentic as
possible. We have audience members in tears and in shock during and after the shows. At the very very close likeness in looks, voice, mannerisms and moves. Chris has worked very hard to become a world leading Elvis Performer, and he is very very grateful for the continued support he receives from all fans. The show is made by elvis fans for Elvis fans. Each and every band member are also avid Elvis fans. You seriously do not want to miss this electric show!”. 'SEEING IS BELIEVING'…. “Wow he looks just like Elvis, same energy too” Joe Esposito (Elvis best Friend) “Chris Connor is to me the closest thing to the King I’ve ever heard and ever seen in my life. I’m in shock, it’s simply amazing….” Martin Fontaine - Performer in the Elvis Story, Montreal, Canada. Tickets for The World Famous Elvis Show are available from £24.50 from www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk and 0114 2 789 789

Celebrate & Worship at Advent Advent is a season observed as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming". Churches throughout the region will be hosting a variety of special services, masses and celebrations throughout the advent period, welcoming both regular parishioners as well as new attendees, all are welcome. If you are looking for a traditional carol service, Christmas worship or somewhere to connect with the local community over the advent period there will be events within your local parish or alternatively you can attend the events listed within this feature.

WHAT IF YOU FEEL ILL OVER CHRISTMAS? Sheffield residents are being reminded that there are a whole range of NHS services available across the city this Christmas, not just A&E. Pharmacists can offer advice on common problems such as coughs, colds, aches and pains as well as advising you on the safe use of prescription and over-the-counter medicines. They can also help you decide whether you need to see a doctor. If you need medical attention when your GP practice is closed you can access the GP out-of-hours service by calling 111. This Freephone service can give you advice about which NHS services are open and able to help you with your problem. It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Walk-in services treat minor illnesses and injuries that do not need a visit to A&E.
The Broad Lane Walk in Centre is open from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year and sees people of all ages without an appointment. The Minor Injuries Unit, at the Royal Hallamshire hospital is open from 8am – 8pm every day of the year (except Christmas Day) and provides treatment for adults with less serious injuries, such as sprains, cuts and grazes. Many people go to A&E with minor injuries, when they could usually be treated much more quickly at the Minor Injuries Unit. Dr StJohn Livesey, Sheffield GP and Clinical Director for Urgent Care at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “There are many health services available for less serious conditions and injuries and we urge people to use them. Please bear in mind that the A&E department is for serious
and life threatening emergencies only, but of course if it is an emergency visit the Northern General Hospital for over 16s and Sheffield Children’s Hospital for 16s and under. “A lot of common and minor illnesses such as coughs, colds, sore throats and upset stomachs can be treated in your home by using over the counter medicine so please make sure you have a well-stocked medicine cabinet to deal with minor illnesses and accidents. Please also ensure that you have enough of all your regular medications to see you through the Christmas period.” For more information and for a list of health services open over Christmas visit www.sheffieldccg.nhs.uk and look under ‘Stay Well’.
If you live in Beauchief, Greenhill or Burngreave ward, Age Better in Sheffield are hosting a lovely Christmas dinner on Christmas Day at 12.30pm. Its free of charge and they might be able to help you get to and from the venue too. Don’t worry about knowing anybody – everybody will be in the same boat plus there will be loads of friendly volunteers to chat to. To book your place, please RSVP as soon as possible to South Yorkshire Housing Association on 0114 2900 250. Another good neighbour Christmas tradition in Sheffield – HARC or Homeless and Rootless at Christmas, who provide a safe and warm day shelter,
which is open to all homeless and rootless vulnerable men and women between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day – has announced they have had so many volunteers put their names forward that they don’t need any more. They provide three free hot meals a day and guests are welcome to spend the entire day to help them get through what can be a very cold and lonely time of year. The project will be open from Christmas Day all the way through to New Year’s Day at the Cathedral Archer Project, Campo Lane, Sheffield S1 2EF. Big hearted Sheffielders have come up trumps again.
Following the introduction of a new Sheffield bus network on 1 November, and the 12,000-signature petition presented to the Council on 2 December, Travel South Yorkshire have publicised revised timetables for some routes from 3 January. You can find out the details at www.travelsouthyorkshire. com/futurechanges/ This may not resolve all problems, but has made the travelling public aware that they have a voice, and should continue to monitor this until a satisfactory outcome is achieved. Please let Sheffield 50+ know if you are continuing to experience problems with the bus timetable because the Sheffield 50+ Public Transport group is continuing to campaign about it. Our next opportunity to scrutinize this will be at the City Region’s Transport Committee on 29 February, which will also be webcast for all to see. The new Devolution Deal being discussed with government requires the City Region Combined Authority to adopt a directly-elected “mayor”, one of whose responsibilities would be public transport. We are always looking for people to help in campaigns like this. If you are interested in joining the Sheffield 50+ Public Transport group, please contact Bridget Evans on 0114 253 6736 or bridget@sheffield50plus.org.uk.

PENSION CHANGES FOR WOMEN If you were born between 6 April 1950 and 5 April 1955 you will know that your pension age is rising to 66. Many women are angry that the law was passed in 1995 but they were not contacted by the government to inform them of how the change would affect them for many years, and they stand to lose many thousands in pension payments for those lost years. The Government now says that in future anyone affected by a rise in state pension age must have ten years’ notice. This issue has been in the news for some time but the campaign for justice for women affected by this is gaining ground. The Women Against Pension Inequality Campaign (WASPI) provides information on how to make your voice heard. You can like their page on Facebook to get regular updates.

There is good news – communal singing is good for your mental health. New research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry shows how community singing can have a positive impact on the mental health and quality of life of older people for little cost, and should be considered an important element in any public mental health strategy for our aging population. Researchers looked at the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of community singing on the health and wellbeing of older people. Professor Stephen Clift, Director of the Sidney De Haan Centre for Arts and Health, explained: “Our research has shown that group singing can have a significant positive effect on mental health and quality of life, including reducing anxiety, depression and the feeling of loneliness and isolation experienced by so many older people, which can have a serious effect upon their wellbeing.”

WIN TICKETS & ESCAPE FROM CHRISTMAS AT DONCASTER’S SPROUT-FREE ZONE RACEDAY Racegoers are being encouraged to escape the Christmas chaos at a special event at Doncaster Racecourse. On Tuesday December 29, the Town Moor venue is hosting the Sprout-free Zone Raceday, which will feature seven quality National Hunt races with the first race getting underway at midday. The racing will be followed by a live performance in the Exhibition hall by The Beat Collective, a vibrant fivepiece function band containing some of the finest musicians in Yorkshire. The band will regale racegoers with an eclectic mix of songs, from 60s classics to upbeat party music and current chart smash hits. The raceday is the third meeting back over the jumps during the festive period – and racecourse bosses have decided that sprouts and other festive favourites will be off the menu, allowing racegoers to enjoy a break from Christmas clichés. Kieran Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “Christmas is a hectic time for families up and down the country and sometimes it’s good just to get away from it all. The Sprout-free Zone Raceday gives people the opportunity
to escape the festivities and enjoy a day of quality racing, music and entertainment. “The Christmas celebrations will be postponed for one day only – and sprouts will most definitely be off the menu.” For further information about Doncaster Racecourse or to book tickets call 01302 304200 or go to www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk.

Dear Mercury, May I please say a thank you, and commend my club, Sheffield Lane WMC at Shiregreen who have had a few sixties bands appear over the last couple of years, giving us older members a chance to hear the music we grew up with. Not every member of our clubs is under fifty, not by a long way, and sometimes it’s nice to roll back the years just for a couple of hours. There are bands like The Ivy League, Vanity Fair, The Fortunes, and The swinging Blue Jeans etc. who can give a very enjoyable evening to some of us oldies. We were fortunate to have The Fortunes at Sheffield Lane last month, and they went down really well. People will remember them on the local club circuit in the mid-sixties, when they were living on the Shiregreen Estate before hitting the big time chart wise, and it was nice having the band back in the area. Club land Stalwart Glen Dale was in the original band, and was a great favourite on the clubs after he left to go solo Unfortunately one of the group was unavailable on the night which slightly disrupted their usual set list because he sings many
of the songs and plays a big part in The Fortunes four part harmonies for which the original band was famous.. Nevertheless, it was a great night. My wife and I enjoy travelling to sixties shows and we think The Fortunes are one of the top sixties bands around. They are certainly one of the best supported bands with almost 2,000 members on their Facebook page. Most of these bands have websites (just Google them) and Facebook pages, and are easy to contact. So, thank you Sheffield Lane Club for catering for us oldies and hopefully it will continue in 2016 and beyond, and maybe some of our other clubs will dip their toes in the water to book these groups before it’s too late and they, and us, are no longer around. Many thanks, Steve Collins

AS CLOSE AS YOU’RE GOING TO GET TO THE ARCTIC Preview: Antarctic Monkeys, 20/02/16, Plug Sheffield By Kt Evans
The North’s finest Arctic Monkey tribute band, Antarctic Monkeys shall be performing at Sheffield’s Plug on Matilda Street on 20th February 2016. But wait...if this couldn’t be any more enticing, the four piece have recently announced that they are to perform the entire “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” debut record in full. With hits to include “I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor,” “When The Sun Goes Down” and “Mardy Bum,” we have a sneaking suspicion this is going to be a killer night. So...what do we already know about Antarctic Monkeys? Forming in March 2006, the band have gained both success from their imita-
tion performance along with the strength of their own live performance. Having travelled throughout the UK and Europe, gracing stages in some of the most recognisable cities throughout the world, the demand for Antarctic Monkey’s is now greater than ever. Stating on their website that “their live show has the power, passion and the creative edge to whip audiences into a frenzy when delivering the powerful tunes of the Arctic Moneys as the way they should be,” the Northern tribute quartet have truly established themselves within the industry. Alongside mimicking one of the finest groups to ever emerge from the steel city, Antarctic Monkeys have also performed at a host of festivals throughout Europe. These include Rock Revolution in Sicily, Oxegen Festival 2010 in Ireland and the Liverpool Mathew Street Festival to over 50,000 spectators. The band have also appeared within the national print media, to include Q Magazine aswell as MTV and the mighty Sky News. Returning back to home turf having not performed in Sheffield for a number of years, we welcome our most beloved tribute group back with open arms. Antarctic Monkeys shall be performing at Sheffield’s Plug on 20th February 2016. You can also catch their live show throughout the year (their gig schedule seems to suggest they really are fond of being on the road) which can be viewed through the bands website – www. antarcticmonkeys.com. Please check out the website for full ticket details. £10.00. 14+. Doors 7pm. Looking back at some of Rock’s definitive moments with John Webster

In 1964 The Beach Boys swapped sun, sea and surf for snow, Santa and sleigh bells when they released their festive Christmas Album. And it is an absolute cracker! The lads from California had yet to hit the dizzy heights afforded to them by the sensational Pet Sounds record which would follow two years later but they were starting to tick along nicely. Song writers and lead vocalists Brian Wilson and Mike Love had penned the Beach Boys’ often covered Christmas hit, Little Saint Nick in 1963. A regular on most Christmas compilations, this undeniable classic opens Christmas Album in style. The lead single, The Man With All The Toys, is a 90 second delight with trademark Beach Boys harmonies whilst Santa’s Beard is a comical song that tells the story of a young boy going to see Santa Claus at a department store only to discover that he’s not the real Father Christmas. Rhythm guitarist Al Jardine also steps up to make his vocal debut on Christmas Day. The second half of the record goes down the more traditional route and there’s some fabulous covers including the yuletide favourite Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Brian Wilson provides an outstanding solo on Blue Christmas and Auld Lang Syne brings the album to a close with Dennis Wilson delivering a Christmas message to the fans. Christmas Album was the Beach Boys fourth LP release of the year and with a perfect mix of original and classic Christmas hits, it stands as one of the all-time great festive records that cannot fail to get you in the Christmas spirit. Everybody loves Santa Claus but it was the Beach Boys that made the big man cool!
THE RACE TO THE CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONE By Kt Evans
Once again the time has come to discover who has been crowned Christmas number one...and hoping to grab the title are two exceptionally different candidates...the NHS Choir and Justin Bieber. So far it seems pretty neck and neck however the final Christmas results will be announced on Friday 25th December; so we’ll just have to bloody sit tight until then! Justin Bieber...the king of 2015. Somehow, Biebz has managed to disregard his brattish attitude, succumbing to a star adored by young and old, male and female. With a host of hits in charts across the globe with bangers to include “What Do You Mean,” “Sorry” and “I Need U,” the twenty one year old Canadian heart throb has now set his sights on the UK Number 1 Chart position. His current single, “Love Yourself” is once again a huge hit which has won the heavy hearts of fans across continents. However, the Biebz shouldn’t get too comfortable as the NHS Choir are also in the running for the Christmas number. Their single, a mash up of Simon and Garfunkle’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” alongside Coldplay’s “Fix You” will bring a tear to even the stoniest of hearts, not to mention fill you with true festival spirit. The choir are formed of NHS nurses from two south London locations – Greenwich and Lewisham and said that they “took inspiration from the 2009 campaign that shot Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Killing In The Name Of’ to number one.” 2015 also marks another stir for the Christmas number one position as the new X Factor Winner, Louisa Johnson is nowhere to be seen in the top 5. Charting at number nine last week with her debut winners single “Forever Young,” the seventeen year old is not set for festival cheer on Friday. Another contender
for the top spot comes in the form of Stormzy, a London born rapper who has stormed the internet with his single “Shut Up.” Love it or downright bloody hate it, it is difficult to deny how catchy “Shut Up” has become...and how difficult it is to remove that bleedin’ track from your head! According to the Official Chart Company which is updated on an hourly basis, the NHS Choir is ahead of The Biebz single...but only by 2000 copies. Who will be king or queen of Christmas? The power is in your hands!

BE PREPARED FOR WINTERY CONDITIONS THIS CHRISTMAS Driving In Ice and Hail
Driving In Hail
Ice is one of the most hazardous of all driving conditions. Black ice is particularly treacherous because it is transparent and harder to spot compared to snow, frozen slush or thicker white ice. As a result, many drivers often don’t realise they are actually driving on ice and don’t reduce their speeds.
Hail storms are extremely dangerous to drive in. Not only can they cause extensive damage to your car but can also be harmful to anyone who decides to venture out of their vehicle. If you have to travel, plan your route to avoid known affected areas. We also recommend informing relatives and friends of your intended route in case of an emergency.
Here are some useful tips for driving in ice: • Only drive if it’s absolutely necessary and don’t be afraid to turn back if you think the conditions are too treacherous • Make sure you windows are completley clear before you start driving. • If you’re driving to meet someone, let them know where you are travelling and when you expect to arrive • You may need to leave as much as 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front • If you do encounter a skid, steer gently into it - for example, if the rear of the car is sliding to the right, steer to the right. Do not take your hands off the steering wheel or stamp your foot on the brakes • Controls such as the brakes, as well as the steering, accelerator and even gear changing should be operated both smoothly and slowly • A higher gear may be more appropriate to aid the tyres gripping when moving off on packed ice

The following tips should always be followed when driving in hail storms: • Stay inside the vehicle. Hail falls at fast speeds, and can cause injury • If hail is severe, stop driving and pull over to a safe place so the hail doesn’t break the windshield or any windows. Stop under an overpass if you can, or pull out of traffic lanes and on to a hardshoulder • Keep your car angled so that the hail is hitting the front of your car. Windshields are reinforced to withstand forward driving and pelting objects. Side windows and backglass are not and are much more susceptible to breakage • Avoid ditches due to possible high-rising water

Safe Driving In Fog Reduced visibility can be extremely dangerous. Taking precautions and knowing what to do when on the road can help reduce risk. Fog dramatically reduces visibility, meaning motorists must reduce their speeds significantly to ensure the roads are safe for both themselves and other users. Fog lights The Highway Code states that headlights must be used when visibility is less than 100 metres – roughly the length of a football pitch. Those needing to travel are advised to take extra care and ensure their lights (particularly fog lights) are in good working order before setting off. Drivers should also carry a mobile phone with a fully-charged battery and car adaptor if available (together with contact numbers if not already stored on the phone), and should ensure that their fuel tank is full, as using lights and heating can use a lot more fuel than usual.

The following tips should always be followed when driving in fog: • Make sure you know how to operate your front and rear fog lights before setting off. Don’t confuse these with your ‘full-beam’ setting • Headlights should be dipped at all times. • Motorists whose vehicles have automatic headlight systems that are activated by low light levels should remember to make sure their lights are switched on manually as they may not be automatically activated in foggy conditions. Similarly, drivers whose vehicles have daytime running lights should ensure rear lights are switched on as most vehicles with this feature only illuminate the front lights • Follow the ‘two-second rule’ to leave sufficient space between you and the car in front • Don’t attempt to navigate using the car in front’s tail lights, as this could lead you to getting too close to them and not leave sufficient stopping distance • If visibility is very limited, wind down your windows at junctions and crossroads to allow you to listen out for approaching traffic. If you really cannot see, you should consider stopping until it is safe to continue

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve heaped pressure upon another angler this week with a requirement to catch for the camera for an Angler’s Mail feature. This time, I have to credit and thank Dru Lunney, who agreed to be photographed for a forthcoming pike spread in the UK’s top weekly general angling magazine, and performed superbly, allowing me to leave after just three hours fishing! In fairness to Dru, a busy few days in Cumbria assisting with the aftermath of the awful flooding hadn’t dampened his enthusiasm, and, despite his tiredness, he was keen to show me a few tips (and very good ones they were too) then try and catch to order….and he didn’t disappoint, which made my job so much easier. All I have to do is photograph the action, and transcribe Dru’s session and my work here is finished. I have to say it was a pleasure to spend a couple of hours with Dru and his granddad, and I learned a little bit more too, which is always a bonus. Keep an eye out for the article in a forthcoming magazine… One thing which was discussed in depth during our appointment was an apparent ignorance of some anglers regarding the proper care of their capture, and no fish really suffers more for it than old Esox when anglers are unprepared. On the Pike Anglers Club website (www.pikeanglersclub.co.uk) there is extensive guidance on pike handling, proper procedures, and essential kit which should be read by all pike anglers before attempting to catch these delicate predators. Both Dru and I had both witnessed anglers without a suitable unhooking mat, a net which was too small, and worse still, nothing with which to unhook a deeply embedded treble, which may be far away at the back of the pike’s throat or beyond. Pike are especially prone to damage when handled by inexperienced or careless anglers who are so desperate to stay away from rows of sharp teeth, that they fail to obtain proper control before attempting

The County Senior league returned to action last Saturday, with nine games taking place, plus eight of the leagues’ teams were also in County Cup action. After these games the County Senior League takes a two week break for the Christmas/New Year Holidays. Premier Division The top two met at Frecheville Sports Club, with Frecheville hosting league leaders Swallownest FC. The home side took the points with a tight 3-2 victory to make it 11 wins from 12 so far in the league, and give them a two point lead at the top going into the winter break. North Gawber Colliery claimed a 3-1 home win over fellow mid-table side Jubilee Sports. Division One Third placed Caribbean Sports grabbed an entertaining 3-3 draw away against fourth placed Denaby Main. The win means Denaby’s unbeaten run continues into the New Year, where they will hope put pressure on league leaders and local rivals Denaby United. Jamie Dixon scored a hat-trick to inspire Silkstone United to a 4-1 home win over High Green Villa. Wayne Hughes was also on target for Silkstone. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 ended their centenary year with a comfortable 4-1 win over Davy FC at Chaucer School. Division Two Goals from Lee Carrington and Will Kemp helped Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves to a 2-1 home win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves at the MDC Sports Stadium. Hemsworth go into the New Year in second place, just three points behind leaders Brinsworth Whitehill.
to unhook and drop the fish, tangle their trebles in the mesh of the landing net as the fish spins, or drop them onto rough banks. Considering the hundreds of pounds spent on rods and reels, fish care shouldn’t be scrimped on either, so for just a few quid more, invest in a large cushioned mat, sidecutter pliers, long nose pliers and long forceps to make your pike fishing a much safer experience….and please don’t use a pike gag to force the jaw open, or one of those appalling Boga grips! If you are unsure about how to handle pike properly, then ask, or go with someone who does know. Don’t clip a trace off leaving the hooks embedded, and then put the pike back thinking no-one has seen you, it’s not fair on the fish and will properly result in its death, and if that’s you, then you shouldn’t be fishing for them. There is literally hundreds of hours of online footage to give you an idea, and many anglers are only too happy to assist, so get the right kit, fish sensibly, and fish safely! It just remains this year to say ‘thank you’ to all who read my columns, I appreciate it greatly, and wish you and yours all the best for the festive season and beyond….Best Fishes and tight lines!

North Gawber Colliery Reserves ended a run of five games without a win, with a 3-1 away win over strugglers Bawtry Town. U21 Division There were two games in the U21 Division, and both ended in draws. Davy FC U21 held Wombwell Main U21 to a 2-2 draw at Davy Sports Ground. Also at Grange Park, Millmoor Juniors U21 drew 3-3 with Caribbean Sports U21. S&HCFA Association Cup 3rd Round Grimesthorpe Sports, who are fifth in Division Two, claimed the scalp of Premier Division Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves, beating them 5-2 at Shafton Park. They will play Kiveton Park in the QuarterFinals. Kiveton Park claimed a scalp of their own, as they beat Division One side Kingstone United 3-2 away at the Fleets. Extra-time was needed to separate Athersley Recreation Reserves and Kirkburton. Athersley eventually edged-out their opposition 2-1 to set-up a tie with Penistone Church Reserves. Handsworth Parramore Reserves complete the Quarter-Final line-up, after they beat Wombwell Main 3-2 at Oliver’s Mount. The remaining eight teams in the competition are all part of the County Senior League. S&HCFA Junior Cup 3rd Round Stocksbridge Park U21 were emphatic 7-1 winners at home against Durkar. They will face the winner of Scissett and Handsworth Parramore U21 in the Quarter-Final in the New Year.

REDFEARN DELIGHTED AS MILLERS TAME TIGERS Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn hailed his side for a ‘well deserved’ three points after a 2-0 victory over high-flying Hull City at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Millers bounced back from their midweek defeat at Huddersfield with a stellar display, after a penalty from Lee Frecklington and a second half strike from Joe Newell sealed a stunning victory. After the game the Millers boss was delighted with his side’s performance, with a win that spread some festive cheer in the final match before Christmas Day. “It was well deserved,” Redfearn said after the game. “They had quite a bit of possession but they’re a good side and they’re going to. We talked through the week about there being times when they would have the ball but I thought we pressed brilliantly.
We talked about letting them come on to us and then breaking, which we did. “There were some harsh words said and it put one or two noses out of joint but that’s football. We had a good reaction and the lads really responded well and the one thing they have done since I’ve been here is they’ve fought. We fought today but we played as well and we passed it. We looked like a good side today. “I thought we were organised, switched on and aggressive. We played on the front foot and we looked dangerous and could have had more than the two that we got. Danny Ward was given a starting berth up front as Redfearn tinkered with his team selection and formation to great effect. Redfearn was full of praise for his striker who displayed a terrific all round performance as the focal point of the Millers’ attack. “I thought Danny Ward was outstanding today,” Redfearn added. “Jonson’s a fantastic young talent and I’ve asked him to do that lone striker role at times and it’s hard and I have to look after him. “He (Danny Ward) was somebody I tried to sign at Leeds and he’s got a lot of ability. I think the trick now with Danny is to try and keep him fit and get the ball into areas where he can hurt people. “I think there’s goals in him because
GAFFER HAPPY TO TAKE POINT Gaffer happy to take a point from league leaders but performance was “miles away”. Darren Ferguson was unhappy with the overall performance of his side in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with table toppers Burton Albion. The Scot though was more than content to settle for a point in yet another seesaw encounter. “I feel we were lucky to get one point never mind three the way the game went,” claimed Ferguson. “Credit my players again, they’ve got that battling quality about them and never say die attitude and it’s a fantastic habit to have. “If you look at the context of the game over the 90 minutes then it’s a good point. “If you look when we’re ahead then its two points dropped but we didn’t deserve anything more than a point.” Rovers twice led during the game against the Brewers upon Nigel Clough’s return to Derbyshire, but couldn’t hold on as old boy Mark Duffy stole a point for a team which Ferguson said were the best he’s come across this season. “When you don’t play to anywhere near you maximum and get something
against a team that I think is the best since I’ve come to Doncaster and we matched them in certain areas and not in others, it’s no surprise that they’re top of the league,” he said. “When you go ahead so late in the game, I actually thought we might get another on the counter attack but credit to them, because they’re a good team. “We lost a late goal unfortunately which has cost us two points. “I was delighted with the character, we were miles away from the standard I expect and the players know that. “You can carry two or three but we carried more than that. That happens in football – you can’t always play the way you want to play and again we managed to get something from the game.” Rovers next entertain Scunthorpe United on Boxing Day at Keepmoat Stadium. he can finish. He’s an athlete and he can run and climb, he’s strong so he can get hold of it and his touch is good. Sometimes it’s just about getting people into a better situation and giving them the confidence to go and play and he did look confident today. Another player who came in for praise was Kirk Broadfoot after another rock solid display at the heart of the back four. The former Rangers defender was a commanding presence throughout leading to Redfearn describing him as one of his star performerw of recent games. “He’s been our best player for me for the last four or five games and he’s a real leader,” Redfearn said of his centre half. “He plays with his heart on his sleeve and he heads and kicks and he can play too.” Redfearn was forced into a change at half-time with Stephen Kelly coming off with a calf problem to be replaced by Lewis Buxton, but Redfearn is hopeful that the Republic of Ireland will be available for the Boxing Day clash with Bolton Wanderers. “He just felt his calf tighten again so it was a precaution,” Redfearn continued. “He’s important to us and he’s just got back fit. Calves are problems and Frecks had a problem coming back from his. We’ve got to really be careful because you want all your better players fit. “We’ve got a blank week so hopefully if he rests and gets the right rehab and treatment we might have him available for the Bolton game.”
DARNELLE EARNS MILLERS DEAL
Rotherham United Academy prospect Darnelle Bailey-King has become the second youngster at the club this season to have earned a professional contract at AESSEAL New York Stadium, subject to FA ratification. Darnelle joins fellow Academy attacker Kuda Muskwe in being rewarded with a two year senior contract with the Millers following an impressive season in both youth and reserve team fixtures so far this season. Academy Manager Garreth Barker was delighted to see another member of his young squad secure a professional contract and they will join last season’s graduates Jerry Yates and Mason Warren in Neil Redfearn’s team. “We have two professionals already in the system and now Kuda and Darnelle have come through,” he enthused. “They’ve both proven throughout the course of this season that they deserve their contracts and I think it shows the rest of the Academy that the football club wants to see its young players progress to the first team.” Bailey-King, who can operate on either wing, has been instrumental in Muskwe’s impressive goal return this season, providing the ammo with a number of assists in both league and reserve competitions.
“He’s got good pace and agility and makes aggressive forward runs. He has introduced some real quality into his delivery this season and he’s becoming more and more consistent. “He plays the game with a smile on his face and he likes the football club and people here and long may it continue.” Barker continued to declare his delight at both players’ contributions in the 2015/16 campaign but insists they will continue to work hard with a host of fixtures left to play in both the Youth Alliance and Final Third Development leagues. “I’ve already seen both lads play in the Final Third Development League games against teams that would compete at Conference and League Two level and they’ve matched them.,” he explained. “Those experiences have stood the entire Academy squad in good stead for their careers and the reserve league bridges the gap between youth and first team football. “We’ve got four or five months of the youth team season left and both boys will keep their feet firmly on the ground as they’re both very humble.”
STRIKE DELIGHTS KEEGAN CLUB TO CLAMP Midfielder hopes Rovers fans enjoyed just his second ever goal. Paul Keegan said that he was hopeful that both he and his Doncaster Rovers teammates had rewarded the fans who watched Saturday’s 3-3 thriller at league leaders Burton Albion. In the first ever football league meeting between the pair, both sides served up an enthralling encounter with Keegan’s second half free kick the pick of the goals. “They were brilliant and I’m sure it was a good game for them to enjoy, he said. “We want to play well and do well for the fans and show them goals, not us conceding goals and we want to play well in the forthcoming weeks.” Keegan notched only his second ever Rovers goal in his 124th appearance for the club – and celebrated wildly! “We were lucky enough to get the free kick on the edge of the box and luckily it’s gone in,” he said. “I’ve hit a few back in the day but they’ve not all gone in. “I fancied myself because I do practice in training, so I’ve been knocking on the door for a goal for a while so I’m happy I got it. “It was nice to get on and it’s nice to be back and involved.” Keegan bemoaned an injury hit campaign on a personal level but is now looking to contribute to a renaissance going in to the New Year.
“The whole team’s done well and being playing good stuff but I don’t think we’ll be too happy at how we played (against Burton), because we’re better than that,” he said. “Its been a slow start to the year but once I get ready and work hard in training then hopefully I can take my chance. The goals we conceded weren’t good enough or acceptable. “We conceded three sloppy goals and we haven’t been doing that of late so we need to cut it out. “It (the comeback) shows that we’ve got character in the team and lads who step up when needed. We have a great team spirit amongst us at the moment.”
DOWN HARD ON FUTURE OFFENDERS
Doncaster Rovers Football Club would like to reiterate their stance that we are against the use of pyrotechnics inside or outside of any football stadium. Supporters found using pyrotechnics either at Keepmoat Stadium or at any away ground may be the subject of action by the Club and the police. Such is the determination of the authorities to eradicate the use of pyrotechnics from football, any supporter found to be using them could be liable to a criminal conviction and, in certain cases, imprisonment. As a Club, Doncaster Rovers can impose an indefinite ban on any supporter who violates their strict nopyrotechnics policy. As well as negatively affecting other fans enjoyment of the game, pyrotechnics are a serious danger to those with breathing difficulties and disabled supporters who cannot easily escape from the smoke. Should anyone see or witness any behaviour that relates to pyrotechnics then they are urged to contact the nearest steward or police officer. Thank you for your continued support.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 SHARP AGAIN SECURES THREE POINTS ADKINS HAPPY WITH The Blades chalked up a first ever win at Glanford Park and two ex Scunthorpe United men were instrumental. Nigel Adkins was the Scunthorpe manager for four years and Billy Sharp - today’s goalscorer - was one of his players. This was United’s third consecutive clean sheet and third consecutive 1-0 success. Manager Adkins made just one change from the victory over Coventry City with Iron old boy Sharp starting - Sammon dropped to the bench and was joined by the fitagain Campbell-Ryce. In a lively start, the Blades quickly applied the pressure and forced a chance after only five minutes; Woolford’s inswinging free-kick finding Hammond at the back post but the loanee could only side-foot over before colliding with a post. The visitors also won a number of early corners, including a preplanned routine that saw
Woolford’s shot blocked, whilst Brayford’s drilled 25-yard effort was well held by goalkeeper Daniels. Scunthorpe’s first opportunity, on 17 minutes, saw Bishop and then Wiseman work hard to put the ball into box but Long saved from Rowe and the follow up was deflected wide for a goal-kick. The second home chance came from a Basham handball but Bishop’s free-kick was saved at the near post by Long. Scunthorpe had a spell on the offensive but the Blades hit back. On the break, Basham and Sharp were involved before Coutts stung the palms of Daniels, who looked on nervously moments later when a Sharp volley on the turn flew just over. Late in the half the Blades fans applauded McEveley has he halted Wootton as Scunthorpe broke and as the referee’s whistle signalled half-time the visitors were on the
attack again. At the start of the second half, the Blades created three good opportunities inside three minutes but were unable to break the deadlock. It started with a good move involving crisp passes from Hammond, Coutts and Brayford before Daniels saved from Wooldford and then Sharp cut in from the left and also saw his shot saved. Then followed a run from Coutts, setting up a cross from Done, but Goode kicked clear with the goalkeeper beaten. The pressure was mounting though, and the opening goal was moments away. It came from a corner and McEveley’s delivery was turned in at the far post by SHARP, who then headed off to celebrate with the Unitedites at that end of the ground. To their credit, Scunthorpe hit straight back with a spell of pressure. On the break, Madden shot at Long and Rowe would have wondered how he did
not turn in a deep cross from Williams on 59 minutes. Soon after Williams chanced his arm from 25 yards but Long made an acrobatic save, turning the ball over the crossbar. The Blades made a couple of changes but Scunthorpe remained on the front foot. Adelakun shot wide and the Scunthorpe fans were becoming increasingly frustrated as the clock ticked down, particularly after Laird overhit a couple of crosses. Five minutes of added time saw Scunthorpe piling on the pressure with numerous long balls into the box but the best two chances came in the fifth and final minute. A Williams free-kick, from 20 yards, was deflected wide and from the resulting corner Goode inexplicably headed wide at the far post leaving Scunny fans with their heads in their hands and the Blades fans to celebrate an early Christmas gift.
GLANFORD RETURN Blades boss Nigel Adkins thought his side were good value for Saturday’s victory of his former club Scunthorpe United. It was former Iron favourite Billy Sharp who unsurprisingly was United’s match winner in Lincolnshire as the Blades moved up to eighth in Sky Bet League One following a third consecutive 1-0 victory in all competitions. Reflecting on the success, the Gaffer commented: “It was a good three points, another clean sheet and Sheffield United’s first ever win at Glanford Park I believe. “It was a game played in blustery conditions and both goalkeepers made some good saves. We had a few chances and should have scored in the first-half through Dean Hammond.
“But we started the second-half really brightly and got our rewards. It was a competitive game, a physical battle, especially towards the end when Scunthorpe threw everything at us, but we stood up to the challenge.” Adkins added: “We work very hard on our set plays and that was one off the training ground, so credit to Andy Crosby and the players. “It was destiny for Billy (Sharp) to score on his return to Scunthorpe I suppose, but this win is another step in the right direction and that’s crucial ahead of the festive period. “The performance was full of grit, desire and determination and credit to the fans who again travelled in good numbers and stuck right behind the players.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 BEST OF MY CAREER THE DAY OF SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY Fernando Forestieri believes he is in the best form of his career. There is no doubt that the 25-year-old has hit the ground running with Wednesday, underlined by a healthy goal ratio of one every two games. Following his brace against Wolves – moving him to eight goals from 16 games - he thanked his team mates and the head coach and said: “For me, I have a lot of confidence because I have eight goals. It’s important for me
because I think I am starting to do the best in my career. “Because of that I want to say thank you to the team and the gaffer because he has given a lot of confidence to me. “The players have helped me to fit in a lot and I want to say thank you very much to them. “I need to carry on like this because this is the best football of my life.” It was indeed a stunning comeback at Hillsborough as the Owls romped to a 4-1 win over the Molineux
side having gone behind to a Benik Afobe penalty. If performance levels remain the same, Forestieri sees no reason why the Owls can’t go on to be a success this season but has stressed the need for consistency. He added: “We feel confident and we showed today we can fight for something important. “We need to be more consistent but I think we can do good things in this league. “If we play like today, we can beat any team”.
Carlos Carvalhal said the day belonged to Sheffield Wednesday after his side’s 4-1 win against Wolves at Hillsborough. The Owls went down 1-0 down after an early penalty was converted by Benik Afobe but a brace from Fernando Forestieri and goals from Daniel Pudil and Gary Hooper secured the three points for Wednesday. Carvalhal said: “Today is the day of Sheffield
Wednesday. “The players and the fans were brilliant and I don’t want to talk about individual performances because as a collective the team was fantastic. “We were not so good in the first 15 minutes, but after this we kept control of the game and the balance of the team was very important.” The Owls go into Christmas seventh in the Championship table and next face Birmingham
on Boxing Day, with the head coach already looking forward to the game against the Blues. He added: “We can enjoy today but my mind is on the next game. “We can’t be too euphoric when we win and we can’t be too down when we lose, so we have to look forward. “I just want to say thank you to the fans and wish them all a merry Christmas.”
STRIKING THE RIGHT BALANCE As the Championship campaign progresses, the most important factor for Carlos Carvalhal is striking the right balance. The head coach insists it is vital to remain level-headed throughout the campaign; win, lose or draw Wednesday posted a fantastic victory over Wolves on Sunday and moved back to within a point of the top six. But the head coach says it’s important to keep balanced and continue with the team work that brought about another maximum haul at Hillsborough over the weekend. “The most important in this competition is the balance,” he said. “If you are balanced and don’t be under pressure when you lose and don’t be euphoric when you win, then you can do a good challenge. “If you win two or three matches and after, everybody thinks that we are the best team in
the world and we can’t lose against anybody; “Or if we lose one game and we are the worst team in the world, this is not good. “But if you understand that we have a good team and if we act like
a team we can do what we did against Wolves.” Wednesday will conclude 2015 with tough games against Birmingham on Boxing Day and league leaders Middlesbrough on Monday 28 December.
