The research also shows that Tesco are by far the most prolific pub converters, with 110 in the last two years – that’s over three times more conversions than any other supermarket chain. Sainsbury’s are a distant second with 29 pub conversions and even The Co-operative, who are part of a movement which backs community pub ownership, come in at third with 23. “The big supermarket

CALLING LAST ORDERS ON HUNDREDS OF PUBS Research conducted by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, shows that 2 pubs a week were converted to supermarkets during 2012 and 2013. CAMRA say losing two pubs a week in this way is unacceptable and supermarkets are being accused of specifically targeting pubs for redevelopment, often despite the outcry of local residents who want the building to remain in business as a public house. The figures, based on national research carried out by CAMRA’s

chains appear to be targeting pubs for conversion, despite the fact that these pubs are often profitable and popular. This behaviour shows a remarkable disregard for the wellbeing of communities that face losing their valued pubs – leaving local people powerless to step in.” CAMRA Chief Executive Mike Benner. A key reason pubs are being targeted by supermarket chains is that a loophole in planning law allows a pub to be converted to other uses, including
a supermarket store, without planning permission. CAMRA is urging the Government to step in and close this loophole, so local communities would have a say before their pubs are lost. Mike added, “Allowing pubs to be converted to supermarkets without planning permission is ludicrous, and something which the Government need to address as a matter of urgency.” Until the planning loopholes are closed CAMRA is encouraging communities to show their support for their local by nominating them as an ‘Asset of Community Value’ (ACV), which can in some instances help prevent the closure of valued community pubs.
“ACV status means that should the pub be put up for sale the surrounding community can delay the sale, giving them breathing space to look at how the pub can be saved. Over 300 pubs have now been listed as Assets of Community Value, but much more needs to be done to protect pubs. At the very least the Government must act to ensure pubs that are listed as assets of community value can’t be turned into a supermarkets overnight. It is outrageous that even valued pubs listed as ACVs are given virtually no protection from the clutches of the everexpanding supermarket chains”. Said Mike Benner.

Copley’s Column
It is no secret that I have a large selection of books, mostly biographies or autobiographies, which would seriously rival Dronfield library. Some of them, written by or about friends which have been signed with a personal message to me and are great personal treasures. Two of these, by Joey Pyle and Roy ‘pretty boy’ Shaw, are particularly valued as they are sadly no longer with us. Two more, excellently written by my pal Nick Johnson relate the lives of Peter Swan and probably the nicest man in football, Mel Sterland, and I also have the biography of my close pal, showbusiness legend, Jackie Toaduff, Coaldust to Stardust. The books about Jackie Toaduff , Roy Shaw and Mel Sterland have been lent out by me and sadly never returned. I have, however, courtesy of the Doctor Barnado’s charity shop, been able to replace two of them for fifty pence and I was able to purchase another copy of Jackie Toaduff’s book. I do however find it sad that when I have been kind enough to lend out these treasured possessions, that the borrowers have not had the decency to return them, and I have learned a valuable lesson. I am aware that I keep going on about the quality of the entertainment in Dronfield, but such is the high standard of what is on offer, I feel compelled to comment. This week, I have attended the weekly open mic night on Tuesday at the Yew Tree, and I never cease to be amazed by the high quality of those who turn up to perform, due much in part to the opportunity to share the stage with ex Human League guitarist and presenter of the evening, Russ Dennett. This is always a great night and a visit is strongly recommended. The Victoria Inn continues to provide the very best in entertainment and this week, I was pleased to attend an evening with Steve Birks, aka Vincent. Steve is the artiste’s artiste, a consummate professional, who has spectacular lighting, looking immaculate with two costume changes, and performs a variety of songs, many self-penned as well as a few Neil Diamond songs from his tribute to Neil, Neirlly Diamond. Steve always fills the pub and will be returning in April.
On Friday night, along with my close pals, the two Andy’s and a lovely lass, Lis Lop Chapman, who needed cheering up, I went to a great pub. The Devonshire Arms at Middle Handley, where regular entertainers Russ Dennett and Andy Birks, nephew of Steve, were joined by two more of this very talented family Mick and Tony Birks, and what a fabulous night we had. We were made very welcome by landlady, Jill, who, on our arrival enquired if we were friends of Russ and on receiving an affirmative reply duly bought us all a drink. Due to child-minding problems, we were unable to see newly formed band Riff Raff at the Yew Tree, who by all accounts were amazing and filled the pub. I am sure they will be re-booked and I will catch them next time.

QUO TO ROCK ALL OVER THE RACECOURSE
One of Yorkshire’s favourite outdoor entertainment venues today announced it is to play host to a legendary British band that is guaranteed to get Doncaster rocking this May. Doncaster Racecourse has confirmed that multi-platinum selling UK rock band Status Quo, who have notched up 64 British hit singles and over 118 million world-wide record sales over the course of a career spanning more that forty years, will take to the stage at the Town Moor track live after racing on Saturday May 17. Renowned for their distinctive brand of boogie rock ‘Quo’, comprising founder members Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt and keyboard player Andrew Bown, bassist John ‘Rhino’ Edwards and drummer Leon Cave, are set to perform a string of hits including Rockin’ All Over The World, Whatever you Want and Caroline during the first of three planned summer music events taking place at the racecourse. Mark Spincer, managing director at Doncaster Racecourse said: “We are thrilled that we have managed sign up legendary British rockers Status Quo to kick off the first of our live music concerts in May. “Quo’s career spans more than forty years and they have had more British hit singles than any other band, so we’re expecting large crowds to be rocking up to the Town Moor for a great day’s racing and some first-class entertainment. Our outdoor concerts are hugely popular and are growing in momentum year on year. Over the coming weeks we’re set to announce two more top music acts who will be performing at the Town Moor over the summer months so watch this space.” Last year the racecourse attracted over 40,000 people to its summer concerts which saw The Saturdays, Lawson, Ronan Keating and Scouting for Girls take to the stage over three events. The Town Moor track will host the second music concert of the summer after racing on Saturday June 28 and the third will follow racing on Saturday August 16. Music and horse racing fans alike are being urged to book tickets as soon as possible for what is predicted to be a sell-out event. Adult tickets start from just £31, children’s tickets are £11. Hospitality options available from £103.20. All tickets and hospitality for the event, which are on sale now, include racing followed by Status Quo live after racing. For more information about racedays at Doncaster Racecourse, visit www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk or to buy tickets, call 01302 304206

FISH & CHIP FACTS
Fish and Chip sales boom in a recession From March to November 2008, there were more than 548 million visits to fish and chip shops – up 5 per cent from 523 million in 2007
In 1845 vinegar was first recommended to be splashed over fish and chips by victorian cook, Eliza Acton, as a means of sweetening the fish. Joseph Malin opened the first fish & chip shop in Cleveland Street, London in the 1860’s. In 1906 in Lancashire, Theodore Clegg opened a 70 seaterfish and chip restaurant and divided his customers into three classes - first, second and third according to their personal appearance and social status. In 1940 fish and chips was the only ‘restau rant’ food not to be rationed during the Second World War. More than 283 million portions of fish and chips are sold in the UK each year. Yorkshire people scoff more than 69 million portions a year.

Superstitious Colours (Part Two) This is part two of superstitious colours. The first colour we will explore is green.
Purple Purple has force and power. It is the royal ray and the ruler of spiritual matters. Purple is visionary as it works with the highest levels of spiritual thought, seeing and hearing. Lavender, Iris and Primulas are good flowers to bring spirits forward. Wearing the purple Amethyst will guide and protect you.
Green Green is the colour of nature. It is the color of Any queries please text 07811632353 or visit my growth, renewal, rebirth, life and abundance. When website www.psychicglynis.com the plants and crops begin to sprout we know it will soon be Springtime. If you add the crystal Moss TICKETS Agate to your plant pot it will increase your plant’s growth. Osiris, the Egyptian God, usually identified as the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead, was depicted as green. Some depictions of the Devil based on the ancient fertility God ‘Pan’ are also coloured green. One of my favourite nature spirits is the Green Man. He represents the cycle of birth and re-birth. The green shamrock is lucky, as are leprechauns but traditionally to dream of green is unlucky. However, I disagree because green is a healing colour and if you are not well dreaming of green could represent your body healing. The sayings ‘married in green, shame to be seen’ and ‘married in May and kirked in green, both bride and groom will not be seen’ imply that a marriage involving green will not last. Again, I strongly disagree, I married in green and I am still married 49 years later.

An Evening at the Brasserie
Last week it was with pleasure that I accepted an invitation to dine in the newly refurbished Brasserie restaurant, within the Consort Hotel. Upon arrival you instantly notice the brand new, bright, fresh décor that creates an intimate bistro setting with it’s own private bar and lounge area. My partner and I were shown to our table where we were greeted with a selection of warm, individual bread rolls which were served along with balsamic vinegar and oil dips plus a bowl of olives. We were left to browse through the menu. At the Brasserie there is a selection of traditional, simple and special dishes to choose from. Sammy, the restaurant manager took our order, complete with charming Portuguese accent and pleasant manner, making personal recommendations from the menu. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio to accompany the meal and I opted for the mushrooms in garlic starter and my partner chose the prawn cocktail. Both starters came with generous portion sizes. We both tried each others dish, both were very tasty and of a high quality. For mains I chose to have the sirloin steak with my partner opting for the chicken curry. My steak, which was cooked to my own personal taste with perfection, came with amazing stacked home made chips, onion rings, a grilled tomato and a side salad. The flavoursome curry came with a portion of individual popadoms and mango chutney. Both mains lived up to the high standards
Review by Mandy Tyler
you’d expect in such a wonderfully presented restaurant. We decided to sit back and relax for an hour before our dessert as we were rather full from the previous two courses. Thankfully the staff were very attentive but left us to order desserts in our own time. It was nice to relax and not feel rushed into ordering more food, when we just wanted to enjoy a respite. Eventually we decided on French lemon tart with raspberry sorbet and Bakewell pudding. They were both worth waiting for. Overall it was a very pleasant experience and we happened to pop our heads through to the Function Suite, where ‘Always 4’ where performing tribute tracks from Take That and Westlife. The Consort have a regular live entertainment calendar with something to suit everyone, so check out their events on the website or give them a call. The restaurant offers 2 meals for £20.14 on Thursday and Fridays with a choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts, using all local produce, so what are you waiting for?

CARING & SHARING FAMILY FINANCES KNOWLEDGE, INQUIRY STRENGTHENING CONNECTIONS Carers struggling with alarming levels of hardship
12-month investigation by Carers UK exposes stark reality faced by those looking after loved ones who are older, disabled or seriously ill: loss of savings, debt and struggling to afford food and heating. The Inquiry also reveals that, despite rapid rises in the number of families providing care to loved ones, Government cuts to support leave carers facing a shocking £1 billion cut. And, Carers UK says, carers not only feel they are not recognised or valued but also feel victim of increasing public criticism for claiming their social security entitlements. Heléna Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK said: “Those caring, unpaid, for loved ones save society vast sums, but at huge personal cost - a cost this Inquiry shows is pushing families to the brink. Caring is often a dual blow, with household incomes hit by reduced earnings, and bills rising as a result of the extra costs of ill-health or disability. With an ageing population, more of us will care for loved ones – yet a blizzard of cuts to social care and benefits mean there is less and less support available. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. This country’s carers are being badly let down. Unless Government acts to stop the cuts to support for carers there is the risk families will be pushed to breaking point and left unable to care for their own.” In the Inquiry recommendations, Carers UK is calling for: • An end to cuts to carers’ benefits and support services. • Urgent reform of financial help for carers. • The Government to make a commitment that future policy will not leave carers worse off, by implementing a ‘carer’ test for future benefits and social care proposals. The main carers’ benefit, Carer’s Allowance, is currently £59.75 a week for a minimum of 35 hours caring – equivalent to £1.67 an hour. It is not available to those who earn more than £100 per week or to those in receipt of the basic State Pension. Experiences of carers who gave evidence to the Inquiry, included the need to keep the vulnerable and ill warm, meant families footing bills for running heating for 12 and more hours a day, with no let-up in warmer months when those with serious illness must be kept cool; costs of travel to medical appointments and the need to rely heavily on taxis; the need to wash three or more loads of washing a day when caring for someone with continence problems, or who is tube fed; the increasingly prohibitive price of buying in care to simply get out of the door for work or respite, compounding the isolation caring can bring; the cost to future financial security and resilience of quitting work or cutting hours to care. Date: 19 Feb 2014 - 09:45 to 15:30 Clinical Commissioning Groups and Health and Wellbeing Boards need to engage people with experience of mental health problems in their commissioning process to ensure that mental health services are person-centered, recovery orientated and holistic. Following a year of activity around local influencing and peer support, Mind aims to continue to support communities to build capacity and influence locally, and develop peer support through their Community Programme and Peer Support Programme. They are holding a series of events to share their recent learning and guidance with local organisations, groups and people. This event is aimed at; • individuals with lived experience of mental health problems; • local organisations working to influence change or providing mental health services, • other user-led organisations or survivor groups. The main purpose is to provide a relaxed space for people to share knowledge and strengthen connections, with participants feeding into Mind programmes’ future activities and inform local action plans. It will be tailored according to local issues and need, providing actions and opportunities for participants to follow up. Carrie McKenzie from Healthwatch Sheffield will be attending and running workshops to let people know about how they can get involved with Healthwatch Sheffield. Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and all of the money required to run the service is raised by our volunteers. Every little really does help towards the costs of keeping the station broadcasting. Whilst the financial climate is difficult, understandably people are having to prioritise their spending and what’s left for charity can be less than before. That’s why we’re looking for ideas that raise money without asking people for cash donations. For some time we’ve been running the online shopping centre and search engine through easyfundraising and these are a brilliant way for free support. This week we’ve add stamp collecting to our fundraising lineup. It was the chosen fundraiser of many charities years ago but the practice of cutting the stamp of your letters has really disappeared. But we’re trying to bring this back in partnership with stamp collector Darren Dignam. In order to keep this popular past time of the last 150 years going, Darren is looking to obtain stamps to support collectors. We recycle so much these days, why not the stamps from our letters too! RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN’ MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Well, what an awful winter it’s turning out to be once again. After trudging through the snow 12 months ago around our neck of the woods, much of the South of England, West Country and Wales continues to be battered by high winds, tides and heavy rain this year. I’m sure you’ve seen the signs of flooding and devastation on the TV news. Let’s hope we’ll see another good summer after all this. I’m lucky to have booked a few days off to jet away to the Canary Islands at the end of the month. But to take your mind off the grim weather, I’m pleased to report that we have lots coming up on Magic… How would you like us to “Make your Monday” ? – We’ve teamed up with Aviva Car Insurance to surprise somebody different each week to a rather nice gesture. It could be a new hair-do, new wardrobe of clothes or even a day away. Just enter to win. How would like to see Jason Donovan, Rick Astley and the stars of the 80s? – They’re all at Scarborough Open Air Theatre’s Legends of Pop show along with Bananarama, Sonia and Hazel Dean. Tune in to Glenn’s Breakfast Show all week to hear how you could pick up free tickets And well done if you won the latest ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats – Teenagers in Love’ double CD in our special winning weekend last Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget you can find out more about all our exciting contests and more by visiting magicam.co.uk
CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
January brought two deaths in the world of entertainment that were mourned the world over: singer/songwriter Peter Seeger, who passed away on January 27th and Phil Everly, who died on January 3rd. Many in Clubland will probably have made the links between these performers whose rise to fame happened during the post-war heyday of club life. Entertainment became more important in clubs from the 1960s onwards, with larger and well-equipped concert rooms built. Audiences were treated to an increasingly varied range of acts with room for different types of materials. The songs of Pete Seeger and Phil Everly, who was on half of the Everly Brothers, were heard on radio and TV here. It was not long before club entertainers picked them up, doing cover versions. Seeger, a folk singer and activist born in 1919, didn’t mince his words when it came to politics which didn’t endear him to US authorities. He was blacklisted during the 1950s McCarthy era when playing with the ‘The Weavers’, though their songs were popular on American radio stations. Seeger reemerged in the 1960s with protest songs about civil rights, nuclear disarmament and environmental causes. He often sang about and for the underdog in a way that was catchy. His most famous were ‘Where have all the Flowers Gone?’, ‘If I had a Hammer’ and ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ These were frequently heard in thousands of clubs up and down the country. Folk musicians were just one type of club entertainment booked to do turns and Pete Seeger’s songs were popular. The Everly brothers had a different style. Phil was the younger of the two, and part of a musical family from the American mid-west. The Everly family sang on radio and toured. The two sons were talented song-writers as well as singers and began recording in 1957, becoming famous in their own right. Their first hit was ‘Bye Bye Love’, which went to the number 2 spot in the charts (Elvis Presley’s ‘Let me be your Teddy Bear’ was number 1!) They went on to have great success with ‘Wake up Little Susie’, and ‘All I have to do is Dream’. Club performers did their own versions of these familiar and popular tunes for club audiences. So, although coming from a long way across the Atlantic, Pete Seeger and Phil Everly had their own special place in Clubland.

READY FOR SOME NEW POLITICS Interview by KT Evans
Describing themselves as ‘Danish as f*ck…’ we pretty much guarantee you won’t have heard anything quite as…catchy as New Politics until now. Forever on the go and in search of any new challenge they can sink their cheeky chops into, we catch up with vocalist David Boyd about their upcoming support slot with Fall Out Boy. Having already created a pretty huge name for themselves across America and Europe, New Politics have their eyes on the goal of breaking into the UK. Ok ok so they may be a little more Eurovision than we’re totally comfortable with, however their smasher of a hit ‘Harlem’ will leave you blissfully unaware that actually, you might just be a little bit of a New Politics fan. ‘We always have the US in our hearts because we have really amazing fans there, but I’m so excited to get to the UK. We’ll kill it! Music is what motivates us! Nobody really knows who we are, so we have about 20 minutes to show what we’re made of!’ Throughout March until mid-August, New Politics will be embarking on their mammoth world tour accompanying Fall Out Boy and The Pretty Reckless. Performing at London’s Wembley Arena on 20th March 2014, David sees this as their best opportunity to reach out to British rockers. ‘These shows really are our time to get people’s attention and we want to be one with the crowd. We want to build
our fan base and give our heart. We know that everybody is there to see the headline so we need to connect. We really put on a raw live show, we really want to show this to everybody!’ Masters of bringing the hype within each and every New Politics live performance, the three piece have already showcased on some of the world’s most infamous stages of rock. Having toured with the likes of Panic At The Disco and 30 Seconds To Mars, it seems the band are already seasoned professionals of living the ‘on-tour’ lifestyle. ‘Bands who we’ve toured with have shown us that all that separates yourself to your goals and dreams is hard work and patience. They’ve shown us that you have to withstand shit and hard times but this is what makes you stronger. I respect 30 Seconds To Mars when they took us on tour after our first album, then when we dropped ‘Harlem,’ they took us on tour again. It meant so much to us and their fans were amazing.’ So what shenanigans have we got to look forward to when New Politics come party with us in the UK? Well if their bloody crazy music videos are anything to go by…Britain, we’re in luck. ‘We’ve been established for about 3 years or so, it is a really new experience for us. We’re the wild ones, we want to do everything! You can tell with Fall Out Boy that they’ve done all the partying, but we’re still reckless!’ Check out www.newpoliticsrock.com for ticket and tour info.
WE HAVE ISSUES Interview: Issues By Kt Evans
Bubbling with anticipation to release their brand-spanking-new debut album, Issues take us through the life and soul of the most anticipated post-hardcore record of the new year… Sad Ghost: “This is the most personal song lyrically for me. It was inspired by a tough relationship. I think it’s really relatable for anyone who has gone through bad times.” Mad At Myself: “There is already a pop version of this track done but we put a rock metal vibe to it even though it was already structured out. We had a lot to do but it turned out great. “ Life Of A Nine: “This song is about girls that lower their standards. They’re a five, living the life of a nine! We see it all the time especially being on the road. There’s a better way, you don’t have to do that.” The Langdon House: “Our bass player Skyler wrote 90% of this. It’s a real mellow, nu-metal song. Lyrically, it came from the show American Horror Story. The lyrics are so twisted. As soon as I watched the first season of the show I was hooked!” Late: “This is a song the lead singer of Lydia (rock band from Arizona) and Tyler recorded together. It was almost a pop song! He pitched it to us and we made it our own. I love this song. We were a little worried at first but we achieved what we wanted to!” Old Dena: “This is a track that our DJ did! He was influenced by Linkin Park on this. Ty made this track our own and it turned out great. There are no lyrics to this song, but we used this as an interlude.” Stingray Affliction: “Overall, it’s the ultimate sound of Issues. Lyrically it’s about bullying. In high school, there’s always one guy who gives you shit. These are the guys who are
really hurting inside.” Never Lose Your Flames: “Musically, it has a pop-punk vibe to it. Lyrically, it’s just a feel good, up-lifting song. The message in this song is to never forget your roots. Everyone has something special about themselves so embrace that.” Personality Cult: “Musically, this is one of the heavier, more energetic tracks. It started out as an intro then we made it a full song. It’s about guys who think they’re rock stars. There are many people in the industry who give off fakery.” Tears On The Runway: “This is a love ballad and is one of my favourites. This features Nylo who Tyler knew for a while. She’s an amazing artist. It’s a metal love ballad…you don’t ever really hear a softer side to metal so here it is!” The Settlement: “I was drawing a blank in the studio then it hit me – I’ll write something which I know about, something which is very personal to me which is a divorce. It’s a shorter song, it’s really heavy too.” Disappear: “This is a very deep and special song and is about loss in general. We were singing it whilst we were having lunch and I said ‘let’s get a choir to come in and sing the chorus!’ Tyler and Skyler both co-ordinated the choir parts. It sounds beautiful!”

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
In January 2013, I decided that the time had come to move on, and I left my sponsor at that time to explore other avenues; no animosity, I just felt that a little too much was being asked of me, and wanted some ‘me time’ to enjoy my fishing as things had got a little hectic..... A week later, and after a phone call from Nick Marlow, a meeting was arranged in Leicester to see if we could work together, and my adventure with Marukyu began; a year later, I’m still loving it! This year has been manic to say the least. Marukyu is a brand which is easily recognised by many and rightly so, but the challenge has been to increase that public exposure, to get anglers asking questions about the products, show potential customers what they can do with them, and ultimately help bring the two together! My role is loosely defined as Social Media Manager, but encompasses not only Facebook, Twitter and other social sites, but web copy, blogs, magazine work and collating reports from our field team..... so it’s always busy. My own fishing has had to change too; I’m now using hookbaits such as the fantastic JPz and much more groundbait than I used to as I target plenty of roach and skimmers on commercials or river species such as chub and barbel which I rarely used to do beforehand. I’ve also done much more predator fishing using products from sister brand Ecogear, so it’s a real step away from the
NORTON COMMON ROAD, NORTON, DONCASTER DN6 9HP
LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS
predominantly carp based angling I concentrated on previously...but it’s hugely enjoyable! I’ve also had the opportunity to tap into a massive amount of experience from anglers far better than I. If I need to know something about the composition of a particular bait, I can pick the telephone up and ask ex-England international Roy Marlow, or I can ask one of the Marukyu Pro-team staff such as Rich Bedder or even Andy Kinder, and I’m learning from anglers such as 2013 Fish O’ Mania qualifier Craig Jones amongst others who have shown me just how to get the very best from Marukyu baits, and believe me, they are the best I’ve ever used...... I’ve visited The Glebe and Mallory Park Fisheries to assist with both charitable events and media days, I’ve been to Marukyu UK headquarters in South Wales and watched the mayhem as orders are despatched and seen the huge scale if European operations too. I learned that at Marukyu Japan, there are ten full time scientists working to crack the codes which make fish feed, that the bait is manufactured to exacting tolerances and all processing is done by robots in stringent conditions to ensure all Marukyu products are perfect; it’s been a mad twelve months! So what next? In truth, I have no idea! Working with Media Manager Nick Marlow always throws up a few surprises, (not always intentional), but between us we try and organise content for our pages and features which attract debate, comment and questions as anglers find out more about Marukyu. I’d be very happy to see you on our Facebook and Twitter feeds, or contacting Marukyu via the website, so why not pop in and see what else our team is up to? We have some fantastic new products coming on line in 2014, so don’t miss out!

Northumberland is Far from Nowhere and Near to Everywhere!
racing form by Timelord
Assuming that the awful weather relents a little there will be seven races on Channel 4 this Saturday – four from Ascot, two from Haydock and one from Wincanton. The going is likely to be soft or worse at all three venues, given the weather forecasts for the rest of the week, with Ascot forecasting soft ground and Haydock and Wincanton forecasting heavy going. Ascot: 2.05 RSA Trial Novices’ Chase (Registered as the Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase), Grade 2, 5yo+, 3m: Charlie Longsdon’s Ely Brown won a similar race to this in testing conditions over 3m 1f at Wetherby a fortnight ago and should go well again if turning out. However this looks a good deal more competitive than that race and he may need to find a bit more here in his hat-trick bid if he is to get back in the winners’ enclosure, since the time of his Wetherby success was quite slow. Baby Shine is another to be seeking a hat-trick and, although this is a step up in class, merits close attention. It could also be telling that David Pipe has entered Gevrey Chambertin here for his first chase attempt and, based on his hurdles form shown at Haydock in November, he could be very dangerous indeed. Ardkilly Witness is another to gain respect after finishing second to Relax in a £31,000 to the winner handicap at Sandown recently. Of the others Sixty Something, Third Intention and What’s Happening all ran with merit on their last outings and posted decent ratings in my system in doing so. However they may all have to give best to Oliver Sherwood’s Many Clouds who put some more than respectable times on the record when winning at Carlisle in November and later that month when second to Black Thunder at Haydock. As a result of those performances he has earned my top lifetime rating. In addition he has since won at Wetherby, handing out a 16 length beating to Indian Castle, with a further 5 back to Pinerolo, in a three runner race. Both the second and third in that race have since won to underline the merit of his performance - he looks to me to be on the upgrade and should prove difficult to beat if on song for this. 2.40 Weatherbys Hamilton Insurance Novices’ Chase (Limited Handicap), Listed, 5yo+, 3m: The answer here may lie with Hawkes Point whose head second to Mountainous in the Welsh National was a very good effort. Admittedly Mountainous didn’t exactly do wonders for the form when finishing a remote fifth in the West Wales National at Ffos Las subsequently but the third in the Welsh National, Tidal Bay, more than underlined the merit when second to Last Instalment in the Grade1 Irish Hennessy Chase at the weekend. Both Hawkes Point and Tidal Bay are inmates at the Paul Nicholls stable which again inspires confidence for this. However, the selection also holds an entry for the 2.55 at Haydock so check where he runs on the day. Of the others there are several that are likely to go well after good recent runs where they achieved good ratings in my system. These form the reserves and are (in descending order of ratings recorded last time out): Shakalakaboomboom; Our Father; Merry King; Amigo; Teaforthree; Hunt Ball; and Wetak. Both Teaforthree and Hunt Ball are also in the 3.50 here so check when they run on the day. 3.15 Great British Drama Handicap Hurdle, Class 2, 4yo+, 2m 3f 110yds: This is another fiercely competitive event in my estimation. I have eleven that posted ratings on their last outings and with five winning last time out and a couple seeking hat-tricks here it looks a tricky one to call. Top of the last time out ratings was achieved by Two Rockers from his ninth placed effort behind Gevrey Chambertin at Haydock in November (note above) and, with the Alan King stable now resurgent after a spell closed down, he may take a deal of beating. Gevrey Chambertin could provide a pointer if running well in the race preceding this and, if so, please take note. However the one that appeals most from this distance is Keith Reveley’s Special Catch who, to my eye, almost sauntered to victory over Art Professor, Morning Royalty and She Ranks Me at Haydock just before Christmas. If in the same mood here he should prove hard to beat. In order of preference the reserves are: Two Rockers; Zabama; Dan Breen; Like Minded; Grumeti; Bygones Sovereign; and Ubaltique.
3.50 Betfair Ascot Chase, Grade 1, 5yo+, 2m 5f 110yds: Bury Parade won over course and distance last time out and should go well. Medermit coming back from a break is also interesting but the pair that appeal most are Captain Chris and Cloudy Too. Captain Chris has posted two lifetime best figures in my system on his last two races and must go well – he looks better than ever this year. Although Medermit has novice chase form that puts him on a par with Captain Chris (and possibly ahead) the break may mean he needs this to put him spot-on. Cloudy Too has been of interest all season since his Carlisle victory in early November and won the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby by 10 lengths last time out after finishing 12th in the Hennessy at Newbury. It is possible that that race came too soon after his Carlisle race. To my mind it is a toss-up between Captain Chris and Cloudy Too but purely based on likely value, and by the narrowest of margins, I am plumping for Cloudy Too. Haydock: 2.20 Betfred Mobile Hurdle (Registered as The Rendlesham Hurdle), Grade 2, 3m: I can see no further than Celestial Halo for this. He seems to me to be better than ever this year and on Newbury form (well advertised by Reve de Sivola since) he is surely the one that they all have to aim at beating. Nevertheless there are dangers to the selection. Cross Kennon has run well at this track before and could prove to be one of his most troublesome opponents, along with Seeyouatmidnight (seeking a continuation of his winning run after posting a good time recently),Two Rockers (see comments above) and Restless Harry. Across the Bay is another respected rival but he may go for the Grand National Trial Chase following this race. 2.55 Betfred Grand National Trial (Handicap Chase), Grade 3, 5yo+, 3m 5f: Based on the argument for the Ascot 2.40 above the selection here is again Hawkes Point. However he can only run at one venue so the reserves here are (in order of preference): Our Father; Wychwoods Brook; Merry King; Sydney Paget; Across The Bay; Wellforth; Le Reve; and Loch Ba. Wincanton: 3.35 Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m: Melodic Rendezvous posted a lifetime best performance in my system last time out and can take this en route to higher goals. When he flopped in the Fighting Fifth in November he was found to have had a back problem and now that that has been sorted out he should continue to progress. Next best may be Golden Chieftain followed by Gassin Golf and Grumeti although Zarkandar cannot be ruled out either. Act of Kalanisi flopped at Newbury last Saturday but would be a player if at his best. Selection summary (see above for reserves in the event of non runners): Ascot: 2.05 Many Clouds 2.40 Hawkes Point, if absent Shakalakaboomboom et al 3.15 Special Catch 3.50 Cloudy Too, if absent Captain Chris Haydock: 2.20 Celestial Halo 2.55 Hawkes Point, if absent Our Father et al Wincanton: 3.35 Melodic Rendezvous Good Luck! Last week’s results: After non runners were taken out the final selections and results were: Newbury: 1.50 Rydon Pines – 2nd @ 9/1 2.25 Al Ferof – 2nd @ 5/4 3.00 Module – won @ 11/8 3.35 Recession Proof – 15th @ 20/1 Warwick: 2.05 Glens Melody – won @ evens 2.40 Valco de Touzaine – 3rd @ 3/1 The financial outcome was a 1.625 point loss to one point level stakes.
Millers & Rovers News 2013-14
ROVERS RETURN ROVERS VISITED WITH NOTHING BALBY SCHOOL FROM SOUTH COAST WOODFIELD PRIMARY FOR THE FIRST TIME
Rovers made one change from last week, Dean Furman starting in place of the suspended Richie Wellens. Despite rain in the morning it was fine, with sunny intervals when the match started. After sizing each other up in the first five minutes the home team were awarded a free kick on their right touchline, which was placed into the Rovers goalmouth and eventually cleared. Brighton followed this with successive corners which came to nothing but continued to press. A cross from Ward on the home left in the 10th minute was headed wide at the far post. A high cross from Tamas on the Rovers right had the keeper back pedalling but the ball was just past the far post. The home team continued to have the better of the play, with Rovers only making an occasional foray into the Brighton last third. Just past the half hour and a great low cross from the home left byline went across the face of goal but there was no blue and white shirt there to touch it in. As the last ten minutes of the half came up, Rovers got more into the game, showing more attacking intent. In the 40th minute a good 50 yard run by Sharp took the ball deep into the Brighton half before it fizzled out. Rovers then spent time to the interval in the home half of the pitch without troubling Kuszczak in the Brighton goal. Rovers made a substitution at the start of the second half, Paul Quinn coming on for Tamas, who had taken a knock on the ankle in the first half. They started the second half brightly enough with Sharp heading wide from about 15 yards from a Coppinger cross. The same combination produced the same result minutes later except this time Sharp had a free header from about 8 yards. On the hour a flowing move by the Rovers from the halfway line finished with Coppinger firing from the edge of the penalty area but Kuszczak was in the right position to save. The home crowd were becoming anxious as Rovers then forced a corner but nothing came from it. However, they found their voice in the 66th minute when the home team at last got going to win a corner. Minutes later, spurred on by the crowd, a cross by Rodriguez on the home right was headed over the bar from close range by Ulloa at the far post. In the 71st minute, following a Rovers attack Brown touched the ball back to Duffy, who fired just wide of a post from 16 yards. Straight to the other end and Rodriguez hit a fierce drive from the side of the six yard box but Johnstone was at the near post to beat it away. In the 74th minute Ulloa put the ball in the Rovers net from a low cross from the left but the assistant had his flag up for offside. The ball went into the Rovers goal again in the 75th minute and this time it counted after ULLOA headed in at the near post following a cross from the left by Ward. Good work by Coppinger on the right led to him putting a low cross across the face of goal but neither Sharp or Brown could get to it. Rovers fought back and unfortunately for Sharp, he took it literally and received a red card from the referee for punching Greer, who had handed him in the face. Down to ten men, Rovers threw everything into attack, with Cotterill leading the way but they just couldn’t force the ball past the home defence. Doncaster Rovers - Sam Johnstone; Gabriel Tamas, Bongani Khumalo, Abdoulaye Meite, James Husband; James Coppinger, Paul Keegan (c), Dean Furman, Mark Duffy; Billy Sharp, Chris Brown Subs used - Paul Quinn for Tamas 46 mins; David Cotterill for Duffy 76 mins; ; Subs not used - Luke McCullough, Marc De Val, Alex Peterson, Enda Stevens, Jon Maxted
Food Served Every Saturday
Three of Rovers first team squad along with Foundation staff visited Woodfield Primary School in Balby on Monday 10th to meet the schoolchildren. Theo Robinson, Paul Keegan and Marc De Val went through question and answer sessions with each year group and posed for photos. The children asked questions about food, training, respect and how they started in football, which were well answered by all three. Helen Harrison, Headteacher, Woodfield Primary “Having the opportunity to meet the players has been an amazing experience for our children. They asked many questions and were interested to find out about the lifestyles of a footballer. I’m sure it has inspired them to work hard on their targets and be the best that they can be.”
ALL CREDIT TO THE PLAYERS - DICKOV Three of Rovers first team squad along with Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his side slipped to their first defeat in four matches. “Obviously we are disappointed with the defeat, but I thought the way we played, particularly in the second half, we were worth at least a point, if not all three. “We knew coming here that Brighton are a top team, especially at home. They play expansive football, they make it hard for you with the way that they keep the ball. “I thought our discipline in the first half was fantastic in how we defended. In the second half we wanted to get at them a little bit more and if anything we have had the better chances. “We wanted to win the game, it is okay working hard and defending properly, but I said to the players at half time to go out and have a go. We created three really good chances and their goal is really disappointing to concede. “I think I have to give our players credit defensively. It’s disappointing to suffer a defeat but I though the players were outstanding today in their work ethic and wanting to do the right things and if we keep performing like that, we will be okay.”

STEVE EVANS TALKS ABOUT THE WEEKEND Steve Evans was disappointed that the match at Colchester was postponed yesterday and when we caught up with him at the MIllers training headquarters this morning, his focus was now on next week and the game with Stevenage. The Weekend’s match away at Colchester United was postponed after an early morning pitch inspection, what was the surface like? I was advised that the match referee was inspecting the pitch at Colchester at 8.30am so both Paul Raynor and myself attended alongside the management team from Colchester. It was very obvious at first sight the match would be off but the match referee proceeded to give the playing surface a thorough inspection but with surface water all over it was the only conclusion. I immediately telephoned my Chairman Tony Stewart, Chief Operating Officer Paul Douglas, our media department, BBC Radio Sheffield and sent a few text messages to supporters who I knew would be getting prepared to set off for the match. At that time it was only about making sure none of our supporters had a wasted journey and saved the appropriate money. On arrival back at the team hotel the players were already preparing for us to set off home. Thankfully our football club will be fully reimbursed for what was ultimately a fruitless journey. As a management team it was then a plan to watch other football matches. I personally took in the Walsall v MK Dons match, Paul Raynor went to Sheffield United and Andy Dibble was at Notts County so the day was not totally wasted. Given our postponement at the weekend, how do you think the other results at the top end of League One panned out for the Millers? Let me be very clear, we cannot affect any other team’s results in League One unless we are playing against them of course. For me there was no real surprises with any result. I felt Peterborough United might win at Orient and they did courtesy of two very late goals but believe me they have got quality players. Preston, who are flying at present beat Tranmere as expected and I watched an excellent MK Dons win comfortably at Walsall. Winning matches in League One is really tough. If you look at a quality team

County Senior League Eight games survived the wet weather on Saturday. That is a slight increase on last week, so we count that as a positive. Premier Division There was only one game in the Premier Division. Penistone Church had the chance to cut Oughtibridge WMFC’s mammoth lead with a home win over struggling Ecclesfield Red Rose. However, it was not plain sailing for Penistone who succumbed to a 2-0 defeat. Jerome Grant and Harry O’Neill scored the decisive goals for Ecclesfield who climb two places from third-bottom to tenth position. Penistone remain in second place, but are still 14 points off the pace. Division One Second placed Jubilee Sports cut the gap between them and leaders Joker FC to just five points (as well as two games in hand), with a 2-0 home win over Penistone Church Reserves. Adam Askwith and Jordan Livett were both on target for Jubilee who also recorded their second clean sheet in as many weeks. Wickersley remain level on points with Jubilee in third place, after a hard-fought 3-2 home win over Thorpe Hesley. Wickersley are now three games unbeaten, a run that was preceded by five successive defeats. Sheffield Athletic recorded their fifth win in their last seven league games. They were 2-1 winners away against Hallam Reserves. Hallam have lost all three of their last three league games, scoring only once in the meantime.
like Bradford City, they have won once in their last 20 games or so, that is a clear example of just how tough it is. Every match in League One is tough but we will just keep trying hard to get an end of season playoff place, if achieved over 46 matches, it would be a brilliant achievement from everyone at Rotherham United. The emergency loan transfer window is now open again, can we expect any movement? The answer to that is there is nothing pending but it would be fair to say we would love to complete on one further addition but as yet we have not had the green light. As I have said last week, there are probably one or two players here who could be doing with going out on loan to get some first team competitive action but as always that final decision has to be made by the lads themselves but they do have options.

Division Two It was first versus fourth at Woolley Miners Welfare, where North Gawber Colliery hosted AFC Dronfield. The two teams were unable to be separated though, with the points shared over a 1-1 draw. The point takes North Gawber six points clear of second placed rivals Kingstone United, who have two games spare. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves followed-up last weeks’ 8-1 win over Boynton Sports, with a 4-2 away win against Bawtry Town. It is the first time this season that Worsbrough have registered backto-back league wins. U21 Division Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 march-on in the U21 Division. Goals from Alex Lill (2) and Josh Thomas gave them a comfortable 3-0 win over Bawtry Town U21 at the Keepmoat Stadium. Swallownest are now 12 points clear in the U21 Division and have won all last 10 league games. Swinton Athletic U21 climbed off the foot-off-thetable with a narrow 1-0 home win over Davy FC. Swinton have won both of their last league games, without conceding a goal. Meadowhall League Once again only two games were played in Meadowhall League on Sunday, due to waterlogged pitches across the region. In the U21 League Cup Quarter-Finals; Abbey Lane U21 were convincing 5-1 winners at Whirlow Playing Fields against Crosspool U21. In Division Two, Bystrany Sheffield were 4-0 winners away against Cricketers 2012. The win is Bystrany’s fourth-in-a-row in the league and lifts them to third place in the table.

BLADES TAME SHREWS AT THE LANE MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
The Blades returned to winning ways in Sky Bet League One thanks to two early goals. Scotsmen Ryan Flynn and Stefan Scougall - with his first for the Club settled the contest with both goals inside the opening 20 minutes. The victory also helped United leapfrog Shrewsbury in the table. After the FA Cup heroics at Fulham, chief Clough made just one change with Baxter returning to the starting line-up and Porter dropping to the bench. Howard kept his place in goal following a clean sheet at Craven Cottage. In the absence of the suspended Doyle, Collins again took care of the captain’s armband but with the Blades kicking towards the Kop in the first half suggested that he had lost the pre-match toss. Baxter, supported by the Scottish trio of Scougall, Flynn and Murphy, were the attacking options and it took just five minutes to create an opportunity. A neat move saw Baxter, Flynn and Brayford all involved before the latter’s cross was headed clear by Mkandawire with Murphy lurking. The lead, however, was not far away. On 11 minutes gone, McGinn found Scougall in space and his pass across the box saw Baxter step over, allowing FLYNN to come in from the right and drill home, despite a crowded area. A second was just moments away and again it had a heavy Scottish influence. This time it was Collins who brought the ball out of defence and SCOUGALL
took over, shooting into the bottom corner from 25 yards, although visiting goalkeeper Weale would not have been happy with his contribution. The remainder of the half saw United clearly in the ascendancy and the more likely to be the next to score, although clear cut opportunities slowed. For the visitors, Parry’s effort was well off target and then he provided a cross to the back post, which Mills almost attached himself to. On 36 minutes, Flynn’s powerful low cross saw Baxter control beautifully before shooting just wide and there was a spell of defending to complete ahead of applause from the crowd at the half-time whistle. Early in the second half, following a 30-yard pass with the outside of Baxter’s right boot, Murphy cut in from the left and fired over the angle of post and crossbar. A couple of Shrewsbury chances also kept them interested. Parry fed Taylor but he shot wide and Eaves blasted wide from distance. The rain began to fall as the second half reached the midway point and Clough’s first change was to replace McGinn with Miller. Professionally, Shrewsbury’s second half possession was kept well
away from Howard’s goal, whilst the Blades dictated the pace without overly troubling Weale. As the game entered the final ten minutes, the wind caused a problem for Howard but he managed to poke away ahead of Schmeltz, whilst at the other end Miller’s shot was blocked by Mkandawire and Flynn shot over from the edge of the box. Late on Coady was replaced by Porter, who slid the ball home on 88 minutes but was adjudged offside by the officials. That decision, however, could not take the shine of a deserved victory, which was confirmed by the final whistle soon after. Blades: Howard, Harris, Brayford, Maguire, Flynn, Baxter, McGinn (Miller 68), Collins, Coady (Porter 83), Scougall, Murphy. Unused: Hill, Paynter, Long, Kennedy, De Girolamo. Shrewsbury: Weale, Jacobson (Schmeltz 48), McAllister, Fyvie (Grandison 79), Taylor, Mkandawire, Parry, Goldson, Woods, Eaves, Mills (Atajic 70). Unused: Winfield, Bradshaw, Anyon, Hall.
EARLY START MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk
Nigel Clough was understandably delighted with the Blades crucial victory over Shrewsbury Town at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Early goals from Scottish duo Ryan Flynn and Stefan Scougall, with his first in United colours, paved the way for much needed three points. The Gaffer, who was relieved to see his players get quickly out of the starting blocks, remarked: “It was a big win for us, an important one too. It wasn’t sparking or spectacular at all, but it was a very professional display and that is immensely pleasing. “We emphasised the importance of a quick start having gone to extra time on Tuesday because we didn’t know how long we would last as the game progressed, thankfully we remained professional having gone two goals in front. “We got the goals early on and looked after our lead which we haven’t done previously. “In the second-half we visibly had a few running on empty and that was to be expected, but we were determined to make Shrewsbury work very hard for a opening and in the end they couldn’t break us down.” Clough opted to leave both Chris Porter and Billy Paynter on the bench against the Shrews, with Jose Baxter leading the line and the manager explained his thinking, adding: “Our selection was focused around how we want to play, Jose (Baxter) is probably the best we have at holding the ball up and bringing other players into the game.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS MARCH ON WITH WIN AT READING MATCH REPORT www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday’s unbeaten run in all competitions extended to 11 games on Saturday after an impressive 2-0 win over ten-man Reading at The Madejski. Alex Pearce was issued a straight red card for a challenge in the area on Benik Afobe before Chris Maguire converted the spot kick in the eighth minute. Wednesday made good use of their extra man and, following the resumption, Afobe made it 2-0, scoring his first goal for Wednesday which ensured the Owls returned to Sheffield with three points in the bag. Stuart Gray was forced to ring the changes due to injuries and suspensions in the camp. Jose Semedo lined up at centre half in the absence of Oguchi Onyewu, while midfielder Rhys McCabe made his first league start of the campaign. International clearance did not land in time for Cardiff loanee Adedeji Oshilaja to make his debut in Berkshire.
The Royals went into the game in free-scoring form with 15 goals in their previous four games and gave the visitors early cause for concern. Jobi McAnuff fed Adam Le Fondre inside two minutes but the Reading dangerman was denied by Chris Kirkland. Miguel Llera then cleared off the line from Pavel Pogrebnyak before Reading were reduced to ten men and the Owls awarded a spot kick – their first of the season. Afobe spun on the edge of the area leaving Pearce in his trail before the Royals defender clumsily brought down the Arsenal loanee and saw red for his troubles. Up stepped Maguire from 12 yards to thump home his sixth goal in nine games. With an early numerical advantage, the Owls went in search of a quickfire second goal as Jacques Maghoma led the charge forward but the midfielder’s shot was comfortably saved by Alex McCarthy. Wednesday, though, looked a constant threat on the attack and full of confidence as Kieran Lee saw his first time hit crucially blocked by Karspars Gorkss. At the other McAnuff fired a half volley just wide on the half hour as Reading searched for a route back into the game before the break. Ex-Reading man Michail Antonio was introduced to the action for the start of the second half and almost came back to haunt the Royals in the first minute. Maghoma advanced down the left
and sidefooted into the path of Antonio but the winger could not find a way past McCarthy, who was down quickly to save at the expense of a corner. But Reading could not contain the Owls for much longer as Afobe gave Wednesday a cushion in the 58th minute, scoring his first goal for the club. Maguire cut inside from the left and fired a low strike on target that McCarthy spilled and Afobe was lurking in the danger zone to lift the ball into the net in front of the jubilant Owls fans behind the goal. It was all action at The Madejski as Wednesday went for the kill but Jeremy Helan blasted his strike from inside the area against the upright and Atdhe Nuhiu dragged wide on the counter. But it was a thoroughly professional performance from Wednesday, who saw out the remainder of the game untroubled to complete a league double over the Royals. Reading: McCarthy, Gunter, Pearce(S/O 8), Pogrebnyak, Le Fondre, McAnuff (Robson-Kanu 72), McCleary, Akpan (Blackman 72), Gorkss, Williams(Guthrie 65), Obita Owls: Kirkland, Palmer, Mattock, Llera, Helan, Lee, Semedo, Maghoma, McCabe (Antonio 46), Maguire (Nuhiu 78), Afobe (Lavery 73) Samantha & Carl Welcome You To

AFOBE ON THE GOAL TRAIL SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Benik Afobe has told swfc.co.uk he is out to add more goals to his tally after opening his Owls account at Reading on Saturday. The Arsenal loanee was delighted to get off the mark at The Madejski and the striker feels he has settled in well in S6. With the games coming thick and fast over the coming weeks, Afobe is out to add to his tally and help Wednesday continue their climb up the Championship and run in the FA Cup. He said: “I’m really enjoying my time here and have settled in really well. “Even before I played a game for Sheffield Wednesday, the fans were tweeting me, welcoming me to the club and I want to repay them for that. “The team are playing with confidence and I was delighted to score my first goal on Saturday but the main thing was that we won the game and kept a clean sheet. “As a striker, it’s always good to score and get off the mark quickly.” Victory over in-form Reading saw the Owls’ unbeaten run stretch to 11 games in all competitions and Afobe, for one, was not surprised by the result on Saturday. He continued: “We knew Reading had quality players but the gaffer got his tactics spot on and we deservedly won the game. “Now we look forward to Wigan at Hillsborough on Tuesday and hopefully we can continue on this run in front of our fans and I’m confident we can get the result.”
