Copley’s Column
The hot topic locally this week has to be the continued success of Sheffield United in the F.A.Cup. Having once again upset the odds by beating Championship club Nottingham Forest by a resounding three goals to one, they have set up the possibility of a sixth round tie with Sheffield Wednesday providing the Owls can overcome Charlton Athletic in a game called off on Saturday due to the Hillsborough pitch being flooded. Surely every Blade fan will be rooting for the Owls in this replayed fixture and the subsequent mouth-watering local derby. From my own perspective, the chance for the Owls being in the semi-final of the F.A.Cup if they can beat their arch rivals would be a dream come true. Whichever way it goes, it has to be a much needed shot in the arm for the City of Sheffield. I have had another feast of first class entertainment this week with my never miss visit to the Yew Tree, at Coal Aston on Tuesday night for Russ Dennett’s open mic night. There is invariably a surprise singer or musician turning up and this week we had a lass from the north of Sheffield, Amelia, who capably serenaded us with songs from Amy Winehouse and much to my delight, a bit of Nat King Cole. Thursday night at the Victoria Inn is also a must visit for me as the acts are always first class, possibly because it is me who books them. This week, we had one of my favourite acts, John Alex, who performs a great variety of songs as well as an amazing Elton John tribute, complete with wig and jewellery whilst playing keyboards. John is also very accomplished on guitar and ukulele. He is always well received by the audience in the Victoria and I am always being asked to re-book him. We have another very popular act this week, Rachel Raynor, a regular artiste at the Victoria who is guaranteed to fill the pub. Forthcoming artistes include Acoustic Lily, Emma Rossi. Groucho, Anne Fotheringham, Diana Edwards and a welcome return by Vincent. Derbyshire police are having a purge on

licensed premises, visiting pubs in Chesterfield wit drug dogs and sending under age customers and prosecuting the landlords if they serve them. Two pubs are being made to close for forty eight hours, one in Chesterfield and one in Dronfield. Whilst I do not condone the serving of minors, I do question the way in which these convictions are secured, as it would seem to me that sending someone in order to get them served has a touch of agent provocateur about it. I am fed up of returning o my car and finding the dreaded yellow coloured plastic bag on the windscreen. I have had four in Dronfield and one in Chesterfield in the past year, the most recent last week. I am pleased to report that each and every one has been successfully challenged.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL 2014 MORE ACTS ANNOUNCED PLUS BAND APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN Many more acts have been added to the bill for Tramlines Festival 2014 as organisers take one step closer to staging its biggest line-up yet. New artists now appearing are Annie Mac, Bo Ningen, Menace Beach, Catfish & the Bottlemen, Eliphino, De Sluwe Vos, Denai Moore, Timmy P, Jamie Trench and Moko. Taking place across Sheffield city centre on 25-27 July, Tramlines is one of the UK’s biggest innercity music festivals and winner of the prestigious National Festival Award for Best Metropolitan Festival. Already announced for the 2014 event are The Cribs, Katy B, Toddla T Sound (Live), Deap Vally, The Gaslamp Killer, Gold Panda, The Wedding Present, Benji B, jonwayne, Moxie and more. Queen of all things bass and Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac will headline the o2 Academy Sheffield on Saturday 26 Feb, whilst next door in Academy 2, Tramlines is thrilled to welcome Leeds’ Eliphino to the stage, bringing his eclectic mix of garage, R&B, house and jungle. The electronic tip continues on Saturday night in Fez Club with three acts that are shaking up the dance music scene. They include De Sluwe Vos whose strong hooks and fat drums have earned him support from DJ Sneak and Jordan Peak; Roots For Bloom label boss Jamie Trench whose tunes have found their way onto the dancefloors of DC10 and Space Ibiza; and up-and-coming house producer Timmy P, whose fixation with drums, snares and grooves has gained him an A-list fanbase from the likes of Steve Lawler and George Morel. Llandudno four-piece Catfish & the Bottlemen will join Sunday night headliners The Cribs on the main stage. Their brand of indie-rock has earned them praise from The Independent to Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 and their 2014 show is set to go down a treat at Tramlines. Over at Queens Social Club on Sunday 27 July are Leeds’ Menace Beach, whose 90s-inflected grunge-pop has seen them tipped by the Guardian, NME and BBC6Music, alongside Japanese psychedelic art-rock band Bo Ningen, whose raw and energetic live show promises to keep fans captivated. Elsewhere on Sunday, festival-goers and music fans alike will be treated to yet more exciting breaking talent, with what is set to be an aweinspiring performance from singer-songwriter Denai Moore in the beautiful surroundings of The Cathedral. Meanwhile, up-and-coming soul artist Moko will play at The Harley, showcasing her unique take on soul, coupling gospel with house grooves and vintage 90s samplers and synths. Tickets are on sale now from www.gigantic.com priced at £12 for day tickets or £28 for weekend tickets (plus 10% booking fee). Tickets will be available on the weekend at festival box offices, but will cost more than the advance tickets. Applications are now open for bands wanting to play the festival. Tramlines will take all entry submissions from its newly built Facebook app, where fans can also vote for their favourites. Visit www.facebook.com/tramlines for more details Festival Director Sarah Nulty commented: “we’re thrilled to deliver another huge instalment of artists for this year’s event. It’s shaping up to be our strongest yet and there’s so much more yet to announce! Opening the local band applications is always an exciting time for us, as we get to see just how much incredible talent is out there waiting to be discovered. We’re really excited by new and breaking talent, and are committed to making sure that we can give up-and-coming artists a platform to be heard.” This year will see hundreds of acts take to the stages at various venues including the o2 Academy, The Leadmill, The Night Kitchen, the city’s Cathedral, Fez Club, Foundry, Fusion, The Harley, Hope Works, Millennium Galleries, Queens Social Club and Yellow Arch Studios. The main stage takes pride of place on Devonshire Green whilst public areas like Barker’s Pool will be filled yet again with street theatre, dancers and workshops. The festival will also see the welcome return of free-entry, family-friendly areas including the Folk Forest, the Buskers Bus, and the Weston Park party. Now in its sixth year, Tramlines is a free-flow, wandering festival where art and entertainment, and new and established bands can be discovered across a plethora of performance spaces. In 2013, it attracted 95,000 people as the festival took over the entire city centre across four outdoor stages and over 50 venues.

SHEFFIELD HEART REHAB EXPERT HAILED AS ‘WOMAN WITH HEART’
Jo Strong, a Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase IV Instructor from Norton in Sheffield, has been recognised as a ‘Woman With Heart’ for her outstanding contribution to helping UK heart patients. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is profiling the work of 10 women who are making a difference to heart patients’ lives in the run-up to International Women’s Day on March 8, 2014. Now the BHF is encouraging the people of Sheffield to vote for Jo to help determine the nation’s favourite Woman With Heart at bhf.org. uk/womenwithheart. Voting closes on March 3. Jo, 33, works for Sheffield International Venues (SIV) at Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre and Springs Leisure Centre. Her cardiac rehabilitation classes help patients recover from a heart attack or heart surgery. They showing patients how to exercise safely and offer information and advice to people on other lifestyle factors that can protect your heart health, such as healthy eating and quitting smoking. Jo started at Graves in 2009 with just one class of patients and now runs five classes across Graves and Springs. Jo is also a key part of a Sheffield volunteer committee that has helped to raise more than £100,000 for the BHF. And proving she's not shy about getting active herself, Jo has completed three marathons and a bike ride to raise more than £3,000 personally for the BHF's life-saving work. Jo said: “I’m honoured to have been recognised by the BHF in this way and to be in the company of so many other inspiring women. “I always knew I wanted to help people, but four years ago when I first started working in cardiac rehabilitation, I had no idea how much working with vulnerable heart patients would affect me. “It’s my life. I find out so rewarding to support my patients from heart attack recovery to being able to play tennis or run again. It is the best job in the world.” Maureen Talbot, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the BHF, said: “Women like Jo make an essential contribution to helping heart patients across the UK, whether they’re young or old, a man or a woman. “However, many women and girls don’t realise they could be at risk of heart disease, which is
why we’re using International Women’s Day to recognise the difference women are making but also to raise awareness of the fact they need to look after their heart health too.” Dave Birds, SIV Group Exercise Referral Manager, said: “Jo is a strong member of my team, and works really hard improving the health of the communities around Graves and Springs. “She has helped hundreds of people in the past suffering with long term conditions, but as a specialist cardiac instructor she has a true passion, not only helping recent sufferers of coronary heart disease, but helping raise thousands of pounds for the BHF. Jo totally deserves this national recognition and is a true ‘Woman of Heart’." Heart and circulatory disease is the biggest killer of women in the UK. To help, the BHF has created a dedicated Women’s Room, an online hub full of information and support for women living with heart disease, or those worried about their heart health.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
This is the third St Valentine’s Day article I have written, so on this occasion I have written about connections with 14th February. Saint Valentine In 278 A.D a holy priest in Rome was beheaded. Claudius the Cruel could not get soldiers to join his military leagues, so he banned marriages. But St Valentine ignored this ruling by marrying the couples and as a consequence he was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and then beheaded on February 14 - hence Saint Valentine’s Day. Captain Cook The explorer and sea captain James Cook commanded his first ship the HMS Endeavour in his voyage of discovery to Australia and New Zealand in 1769. He was killed in an argument in Hawaii on 14th February 1779. Captain Cook’s statue stands on West Cliff Whitby looking out to sea. Traditions of February - St Valentine Day Traditionally Spring begins on Saint Valentine’s Day - it is the day the birds choose their mates. Some call it the birds’ wedding day. Below are a few traditions of Saint Valentine’s Day The first man an unmarried woman will see will be her future husband on Valentine’s Day All girl suitors write on a piece of paper and wrap it in clay, and then put it in water. The first name to surface is who she will marry.
women with the hides of the animals they had slain. Young women would actually line up to be hit. The brutal fete included matchmaking in which young men drew a name out of a jar and then the couple would copulate till the end of the festival- or longer if the match was right. Around the same time the Normans celebrated Galtin`s Day. Galatin meant “lover of women” - this is sometimes confused with St Valentine’s Day. Did you know that the Japanese are passionate about St Valentine’s day? They celebrate it with a twist. Women give men their chocolate that is shaped into hearts, cupids and other things! The men then return the chocolate figures and suggesting “Yes I love you” or “No I don’t love you” depending on the type of chocolate they give in return. Some of the different types of chocolate the men give to women are a “giri-choko” which means obligation, a chocolate gift without any romantic interests. This is given to mothers and sisters for example. Then there is a “Hommei -choco” meaning “my favourite” or “I love you will you be my love?” Australian Miners The Australian miners who worked in the Ballarat mines deemed themselves wealthy and would share their wealth by spending thousands to have an extravagant Valentine card delivered to their loved ones. These cards were satin cushions infused with perfume and decorated in an ornate matter with roses and love birds. Or some would even go one step further and give their loved ones a stuffed humming bird or bird of paradise in a specially decorated box which was extremely expensive.
Denmark In Denmark a Valentine card is known as a lover’s If a Robin flew over a girls head she would marry card. When you hold it up to the light you can see a lover handing a ring to his girlfriend. Also a Sailor. If it was a Sparrow she would marry a there is a tradition of sending pressed flowers - in poor man. If it was a Goldfinch then she would particular snowdrops. This is because Snowdrops marry a rich man are the symbol of hope. When Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, an angel Origins of Saint Valentine’s Day around the appeared and transformed some of the snowflakes World into snowdrops, symbolising that winter Saint Valentine’s Day is a lovers celebration, eventually gives way to Spring. LGB&T HISTORY MONTH
PROMOTING DIVERSITY & EQUALITY THROUGH MUSIC February marks LGB&T History Month in the UK, a month of events celebrating the lives and achievements of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGB&T) community and the theme this year is music. Britain is renowned for being one of the greatest creators and exporters of music in the world. The UK’s music industry is driven by the diversity and creativity of many artists who represent LGB&T rights and act as role models for LGB&T people around the world. Marking the UK’s contribution to this year’s theme Minister for Women and Equalities Helen Grant said: “Music is such a powerful way for people to express themselves. There have been many inspirational British musicians who have helped change attitudes and challenge stereotypes so it’s great that LGB&T History Month is dedicating this year to music. I’d like to personally pay tribute to the enormous contribution and sacrifices they have made to
help us build a fairer society.” Key achievements The government is committed to advancing LGB&T equality and we have made a real difference: • the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act received Royal Assent last year and the first marriages of same sex couples will be able to take place from 29 March 2014 • in December 2011, we changed the law to allow same-sex couples to register their civil partnership on religious premises on a permissive basis • we now recognise 75 overseas same sex partnerships as equivalent to UK civil partnerships, 50 more than when the Civil Partnership Act 2004 was enacted • we have delivered our commitment to bring forward legislation to disregard consensual gay sex convictions, and those affected can now submit applications to the Home Office Visit the LGBT History Month website at: http://lgbthistorymonth.org.uk/

20MPH LIMIT CAMPAIGN
A ‘Myth-busting’ talk by Anna Semlyen, national campaign manager for “20’s Plenty for Us”. Monday, 24 February 2014 at 7.30pm Farm Road Sports & Social Club, Farm Road, Sheffield, S2 2TP. As more areas of Sheffield get 20mph status where people Live, Work and Shop, come & hear why this is thought to be such a good thing for our Health, Wealth and Society, and hear answers to some of the objections that are commonly raised to this nationwide initiative. A major part of the rationale for lower urban speed limits is Health Improvement. Our contention is that lower speeds mean less Stress, more people choosing Active travel, fewer ‘Parent Taxi’ duties and more people young & old getting out & about under their own steam! www.20splentyforsheffield.org.uk

MEADOW FARM RE-OPENS AFTER £250,000 REFURBISHMENT One of The Mercury region’s most popular family food and entertainment pubs has re-opened its doors following a truly spectacular refurbishment. Readers who know Meadow Farm might have wondered why any modernisation was needed, however this question is instantly answered when you enter. From the brand new Ice Cream Parlour to the extended Cakeaway, from the fabulous new furnishings and carpeting to the outdoor play facilities with mini football pitch, you will like everything you see. Licensees Dave and Joy Butcher are delighted with the results and even with 30 years experience, have never been so excited at the range and quality of the new menus. Dave and Joy are Fellow Members of the British Institute of Innkeeping and have a passion for their industry. Says Dave, “We do not aim to be the biggest but the best on service and quality.” Meadow Farm employs 45 staff including excellent chefs who eagerly await the return of regular guests and those visiting for the first time; there will be plenty of room, as Meadow Farm can accommodate 350 seated guests. Renowned for its fantastic carvery, this hostelry operates seven days a week, day and night; opening 12-2 Monday to Friday, 12-8 Saturday and 12 -7 Sunday. Their extensive new menus will suit all tastes and dietary requirements. For senior citizens there is the “Golden Years” menu which is
offered 12-3 Monday to Friday, with 3 courses for only £6.75. This is a family business ran with families in mind. The first great example is their famous Cakeaway, which now offers an even bigger selection. Joy says, “All our cakes are freshly hand made by our own highly trained chefs and can be eaten here or taken away.” The second example is the Ice Cream Parlour. This is one of the innovations of the refurbishment and Dave is obviously keen to see customers give it a try. Dave says, “We are about to introduce a fantastic offer; there are eleven flavours to choose from and you can even make your own ice cream dessert. The ice cream is of the best quality and is served in cones, tubs and sundaes. But what about the grown ups? Well there is a full range of drinks – John Smith’s, Abbot Cask, Black Sheep from North Yorkshire, Carling, Fosters, Stella, San Miguel and Strongbow – all are on Draft. Then there is a brilliant wine list with wines from all around the world and a full range of spirits and soft drinks. GREAT SUCCESS AND NEW VENUE BOOKED FOR THE SOUTH YORKSHIRE PROPERTY AUCTION
Another successful night at the first South Yorkshire Property Auction (SYPA) of 2014 - the auction managed to sell 18 out of the 23 lots offered, resulting in a 78% success rate and featured a wide variety of properties, catering for all buyer needs. The total amount raised from the auction was in excess of £1,500,000 with the highest sale price on the night at £250,000 from Lot 17; £30,000 over its initial starting price. This just shows that when properties are priced sensibly, coupled with a transparent transaction, a more competitive environment is created and better sales prices are achieved.

MARCO PIERRE WHITE APPOINTS DUO TO HEAD UP NEW SHEFFIELD RESTAURANT
Marco Pierre White has handpicked his management team to head up his new venue on West Bar Street, Sheffield. The TV chef’s latest venture, Marco’s New York Italian, opens late March and he has appointed John Cluckie and Len Roberts to the roles of Head Chef and Restaurant Manager respectively. Ireland-born John, who has lived in Sheffield since 2004 joins from Piccolino. He has more than 15 years experience and has a strong Italian cooking background. Restaurant manager Len started his catering career in the aviation sector where he worked his way up to cabin services manager for airline, Air Seychelles. He has also worked as a restaurant manager at the De Vere hotel group and Macdonald Hotels. Marco Pierre White said: “We’re in the final stages of pre-opening and all set to hit the ground running when we open. The team is prepared and eager to start welcoming guests. “John and Len are fantastic, their enthusiasm and ambition sets them apart and I’m confident they will deliver a great experience.
“We want Marco’s to raise the bar for New York Italian food in the city. It is a place for people to enjoy a bite to eat after work, dine with the family or get glammed up for a special occasion. It is an all occasion venue, there is no pretence about us, we simply want people to spend time with us and relax whilst enjoying some quality food.” Len Roberts said: “Marco is someone who inspired me to work in the catering and hospitality industry. I’m delighted to be a part of the team bringing his new restaurant concept to the city and delivering what he calls ‘affordable glamour.’ Sheffield is such a vibrant city and the restaurant is going to be a great new entry to the market.” Marco’s New York Italian is located next to the new Hampton by Hilton hotel on West Bar Street. Its American-Italian inspired menu features dishes including seafood, pasta, pizza, steaks and burgers. There is also a big bar area where you can enjoy an array of signature cocktails and choose from a diverse wine and drinks list.
FAN-TASTIC NIGHT AT FIRTH PARK WMC
On Friday 7th February, there was literally a 'fan-tastic' evening at Firth Park WMC with Sheffield United Legend, Bob Booker. He was signed by Dave Bassett for the Blades in 1988 & became a cult figure amongst the Blades faithful for his endeavour on the pitch and his all round dedication to both the club & supporters. On the night he recalled many interesting and entertaining stories from his time at the club both on and off the pitch, which were extremely well received. His popularity both then and now was clearly evident as fans queued up to talk to him, embrace him plus give thanks and appreciation of his time at Sheffield United. He was clearly humbled by the incredible reception that he received. This was topped at the end of the evening as the packed Firth Park club chanted 'Ooh Ah Bob
Booker' then after that, at Bob's request, everyone joined in a rendition of 'The Greasy Chip Butty Song'. A fitting end to another very enjoyable football evening in a tremendous atmosphere at Firth Park WMC. Next football evening there is set to be announced soon so look out for details in The Mercury and on www.legendsreunited.co.uk or call 07967 714224 for enquiries.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
Unfortunately, as you might have heard me mention on air last Saturday, I’ve had a touch more car trouble. My motor refused to start up on its own one day last week, which resulted in a costly trip to the garage. The interesting thing was that it all happened on Wednesday. Yes the day which brought us those very high winds. May be I should have just opened the doors and released the handbrake. The forces of nature could have powered me along instead! Don’t forget that when the weather gets bad, we’ll keep you up to date with all you need to know across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. We’ve got traffic and travel every 20 minutes at morning and afternoon drive times, and of course the latest news on the hour. This week thinking ahead to the nicer, or at least more pleasant months of the year, there are tickets to be won for Yorkshire’s special Last Night of the Proms. Join Glenn at Breakfast time for ticket giveaway details, and there’s also our Clip Around The Ear game. Identify the mystery sound to win a digital radio. And I’ll catch you as ever on Saturday. There’s the Birthday Bouquet awards, details on what’s on, just great songs to start the weekend and I’ll be asking if you can suss out what’s being played on the Magic Mouth Organ.
CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
I was recently down on the Gower Peninsula in Wales for work but I was determined to find time to visit what used to be a CIU convalescent home in Langland Bay. I had only ever seen pictures of the former club home, a stunning looking building, perched up above the bay. It was built in the mid-19th centre in the Scottish Baronial style by the local Crawhay family, who were Merthyr Tydfil ironmasters. They used it as their summer residence but then it became a hotel before being taken on by the CIU. Given the location, the home was probably used mainly by South Wales coal miners. It always struck me, just seeing the pictures of the place, as a wonderfully placed facility for clubmen to be able to spend a week or two after ill-health or surgery. Seeing it in real life only added to this opinion. As I walked around the cliffs from the Mumbles, I could see the large stately looking property, looking very little changed from the pictures. Coming into Langland Bay proper, the building still dominates the scene. This and the other four CIU homes offered a chance of a quiet stay by the sea, with regular meals and fresh air. The rules were quite strict, with legendary severe matrons but in many ways they were home away from home for club members. They could sit and have a quiet game of dominoes or cards with fellow recovering clubmen. The first convalescent home to open was Pegwell Bay in 1894 and, not long after opening, an extension was planned so that more men could go there. Over time, the others including Langland Bay were opened. The place was more isolated a hundred years ago and I would imagine it would have been difficult for men to sneak off into Swansea for a night on the town! The importance of such facilities cannot be overstated. The Welfare State didn’t arrive until 1945. Even in the post-war period with its relative full employment and rising standards of living, many working-class families still could not afford regular holidays let alone a convalescence stay. These welfare functions sat side by side with the other features of CIU club life but have usually gone unacknowledged. Langland Bay had to be sold off due to the huge running costs. It’s now a block of luxury apartments. I wonder if the current residents are aware of its remarkable history?

rhythmic sections to succumb to a first rate recording. Their second album, ‘Brain Thrust Mastery’ was released on 17th March 2008 and supplied indie fans with yet another belter of a release. Stand out tracks on this album include ‘Tonight,’ ‘After Hours’ and ‘Let’s See It,’ which flew straight in at number 11 on the UK charts. Powerful, anthemic and woven with intricate lyrics, whether they knew it or not, We Are Scientists firmly checked themselves into rock royalty status. Their 2010 album ‘Barbara’ followed much in the same vein which was preceded by an exclusive EP ‘Business Casual,’ comprising of five hits to tantalise their fans ear drums. So whatever ‘TV en Francais’ has in store for all of us, we’ll just have to wait and see… We Are Scientists are performing throughout the UK to include London, Oxford, Manchester, Birmingham, London and Leeds Stylus on 8th March. With each and every live show a massive success, we strongly suggest you get yourself down to see one of the most entertaining indie bands to emerge out of the international market.
If you have yet to have the privilege of seeing We Are Scientists live, we can think of no better opportunity than their upcoming live UK tour...what great timing ey! Now back on UK territory, the group are set to release their brand new studio album ‘TV en Francais’ on 3rd March, arguably one of the biggest releases of the bands career. Forming in 2000, vocalist Keith Murray, bassist Chis Cain and Drummer Andy Burrows who joined in 2009 brand themselves as ‘the Check out www.wearescientists.com for tickets premium funk and in the world today using grooves such as skunk, backwards and slippery and tour dates! slides.’ And listening to their back catalogue of massive hits, quite frankly, we couldn’t agree more… If you have yet to get familiar with We Are Scientists, we suggest you start off with their debut album, ‘With Love and Squalor’ right back in Spring 2005. With a track list so strong it propelled the band straight into the musical spotlight, ‘It’s a Hit,’ ‘Lousy Reputation’ and ‘This Scene Is Dead’ are full of intricate hooks, ridiculously catchy choruses and sweeping

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
I’ve had a very perplexing experience this week....... Even if I do say so myself, I’m a fairly competent quivertip angler, able to decipher much of what is going on by the merest twitch of the ‘tip, but I was baffled this week at Cudmore Fisheries in Staffordshire when I visited the extremely prolific (usually!) Arena Pool. I’d set myself up on the back of the wind just to be comfortable, but I knew I was on for a difficult session after a night of freezing rain and a couple of hours of snow which had rapidly dropped the water temperature a degree or two; in fact, the first hour of my visit was spent tucked up against the roaring log burner in the lodge drinking copious amounts of tea as I considered going straight home! However, I needed to get some images for the Marukyu social media sites, so set up I did.... Arena is a doughnut shaped pool with a dominant island feature an easy thirty yard lob away; getting tight to the island offers the best chance of intercepting patrolling fish, so a small method feeder packed with groundbait and tiny pellets was launched out and left to settle. My hook bait was the fantastic Marukyu Credence corn which I have the utmost faith in, and within seconds, I was getting the familiar dip and pull of the tip as fish started to dislodge my method mix.....then the rod tip wrapped around and I struck into thin air! Twice! Then a third time! I was bemused as the method is usually fairly idiot proof and it’s

harder to miss bites than hit them....until today. The indications were not line bites, there was no pull around then spring back as fish brushed against the line, nor was it fish in the baited area rolling the feeder, but I hadn’t got a clue what it actually was. I changed hook bait with the same result, but did see a large fish swirl directly over the feeder which confirmed that there were targets in the immediate area. I changed hook size, I changed from hair rigged baits to side hooked and back again, all with the same negative result, I varied the hook link length, changed hook size all the way down to single maggot on a 22, then bigger baits on a size 10, then swapped to a cage feeder to see if that helped but to no avail....I was stumped indeed, I missed every single bite. Then all went quiet, without so much as a tiny nod for four hours....nothing, not a twitch. I tried everything I could think of to buy a bite, tight to the island, just off the island, mid way across, the near margin either side...still nothing. I switched to a straight lead, fished popped up baits...nope, no joy...... As the sun started to fall away, the tiniest tremor told me something was back in the swim and indications continued to vary between full blooded wrap arounds to merest hint of a sniffing fish and I struck at them all! I hit the first dip, I sat on my hands like a 1970’s bream angler, I hit the big bites, I waited, I even struck before any movement but still hit nothing until right at the end of the day, I hit a bite and felt the welcome kick of something on the other end.....then it came off.....typical! I still have no idea what was going on; I’ll have to put it down to ‘one of those days’ which was always going to be hard, and a day which I’m guessing we have all experienced, but I didn’t realise it would be so frustrating too! Never mind, at least I got some pictures......

racing form by Timelord
According to Channel 4’s website this weekend’s TV racing comes from Kempton and Newcastle, although my regular racing website does not yet show the Newcastle races as being scheduled for coverage. However this could be just an oversight at this stage so I am assuming that Channel 4 have got it right. With less than a month a month to Cheltenham this is the last but one week where meaningful clues can be gained for the big festival. Kempton is the main meeting where the Grade 3 Betbright Chase is the feature race. At Newcastle the feature is the Eider Chase – a marathon over 4 miles 1 furlong on its testing circuit – get set for a slow-motion finish on the forecast heavy ground. At first glance there is some very tricky and competitive racing on this week’s Channel 4 offering. Most of the races, including the three handicaps, are each contested by several in-form animals that have recorded decent times on their most recent outings - with the result that there is precious little between them on my figures. Kempton: 2.05 Betbright.com Adonis Juvenile Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo, 2m: John Quinn’s Pearl Castle, a 16 length victor over I Got Power at Doncaster in a very respectable time last time out, is the one that stands out to me for this. He has my top lifetime rating from that performance and appears to me to be a progressive performer who could be destined for bigger and better things. Next best may be Paul Nicholls’ Solar Impulse whose fourth on the heavy at Chepstow last time was also a good effort on my figures. After these the best last time out figures (in descending order) were achieved by Handiwork, Commissioned and Activial. Harristown (has the second best lifetime figure in my system) and Ronaldinho have also recorded speed ratings in the past but did not do so on their most recent appearances. 2.40 Betbright Mobile Pendil Novices’ Chase, Grade 2, 5yo+, 2m 4f 110yds: This can go to Alan King’s Balder Succes who won the Kingmaker Novice Chase at Warwick impressively on his last outing. This may be a bit tougher than his last race however since all the others hold respectable credentials – even Tchang Goon who I expect to pop up at a huge price some day! I have very little between Dark Lover, Bucking the Trend, Fox Appeal, Loose Chips and God’s Own based on their lifetime best ratings in my system. By a narrow margin the first reserve place is awarded to Bucking the Trend (also declared for the Newcastle 1.45, so check where it runs on the day) followed by God’s Own, Loose Chips, Dark Lover and Fox Appeal - but even a prominent showing from Tchang Goon would not be a total surprise. 3.15 Sky Bet Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m: Dubai Prince was third to Pearl Castle at Doncaster so a good performance by that one in the 2.05 race here (see comments above) could be indicative of his chance in this event. Alan King’s First Mohican also scored at Doncaster earlier this month (on similar ground to that of Pearl Castle’s race) and did so in a visually impressive fashion, albeit that the time was a good bit slower than Pearl Castle’s race. Charlie Longsdon’s Germany Calling and Philip Hobbs’ Garde La Victoire have also posted good ratings in my system and must enter calculations for this. However, on my figures they will all have to show some marked improvement is they are to seriously challenge Paul Nicholls’ unbeaten gelding Irving who has my best rating by quite a little way and won a similar class of contest last time out. The form of that race was well advertised by the third, Splash of Ginge, when winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury a week last Saturday and Irving should prove very hard to beat here in my opinion. Dubai Prince is first reserve followed by Germany Calling, Garde La Victoire and First Mohican. 3.50 Betbright Chase (Handicap), Grade 3, 5yo+, 3m: The lifetime best speed figures of this field in my system range from 131 to 218, with all recording decent times on occasion. This is not much at all given the vagaries of form, wellbeing, ground conditions and distance - so all are in with chances of sorts. My (adjusted for weight) top lifetime figures are held by Jump City (218), Ardkilly Witness (201), Rajdhani Express (198), Planet of Sound (186) and Bury Parade (182) who are all very strongly in the reckoning. The best few last time out figures in my system were recorded by Bury Parade (157), Planet of Sound (153), Grandioso (151), What’s Happening (119) and Midnight Appeal (114). Bury Parade, the ante-post favourite for this event, hails from the top stable of Paul Nicholls but then so do (the lightly weighted) Jump City and Grandioso. All three are very much respected and would appear to hold sound credentials but on balance, and by the narrowest of margins, I just favour the chances of Philip Hobbs’ last time out course and distance winner Planet of Sound, who may be able to account for the Nicholls trio despite being
35
4lbs worse off at the weights with Jump City when compared to their last encounter here in January. Bury Parade would seem to pose the biggest threat to the selection and gets the first reserve slot followed by Jump City, Grandioso, Ardkilly Witness and Rajdhani Express (keep an eye on this one for a tilt at one of the Cheltenham Festival handicaps!). Newcastle: 1.45 Betfred Racing Follow Us On Facebook Novices’ Chase, Class 2, 5yo+, 3m: With Swatow Typhoon and Strike Fast yet to trouble the scorer in my system this can be narrowed down a little. Kris Cross carries my top lifetime rating but did not record one last time out, along with Edmund Kean. The one that catches my eye most however is Sue Smith’s gelding Pinerolo who recorded a very respectable time when successful last time out over 3m 2f on heavy ground at Catterick. Holywell and Knockgraffon King also recorded decent ratings when winning last time out and are very much respected along with Bucking the Trend and War On. 2.20 Betfred Win Gold Cup Tickets on Facebook Handicap Hurdle, Class 2, 4yo+, 0-145, 2m: This is a most competitive event based on my last time out ratings, with eleven of the fourteen participants posting a figure on their most recent runs. My top last time out figure goes to Saphir River from his race at Haydock in January where he finished in a 20 lengths fifth place behind Extreme Impact on heavy ground over three miles. The shorter distance here may help but both the first and second in that race, Extreme Impact and Quel Elite, failed to confirm its merit when quite soundly beaten there last weekend. This poses a question in my mind about the true value of that form. Others with good recent ratings are: Yorkist; Figaro; Dumbarton; Deepsand; and Stormin’ Exit who, along with Grate Fella, Mojolika, Angelot du Berlais, Kudu Country and Ubaltique, all merit close attention here in my estimation. In a wide open event the nod goes to Figaro although, on a line through Pas Trop Tard, there may not be very much between the selection and Yorkist who gets the first reserve slot followed by: Saphir River; Deepsand; Dumbarton and Stormin’ Exit. 2.55 Betfred Eider (Handicap Chase), Class 2, 5yo+, 4m 1f: This is another contest where several posted decent times on their most recent outings. The vote goes to Malcolm Jefferson’s hat-trick seeking Sun Cloud who looks very progressive to me over this sort of extreme trip. Last time out he won over 3m 6f on heavy ground at Catterick, keeping on strongly at the end to defeat Merlin’s Wish by 11 lengths. He may have most to fear from the lightly weighted Wood Yer who is himself seeking the hat-trick and who also posted a quick time last time out staying on well over 3 miles on soft ground at Leicester. Another feared opponent is Nicky Richards’ Tutchec who is also on a roll at present and is seeking a five-timer here. Financial Climate may be best of the rest although last time out winners Relax and Presented (from the Venetia Williams Brian Ellison and stables respectively – which are both firing in the winners at present) warrant plenty of respect. Other respected rivals are Samstown, Royale Knight and Safran de Cotte. Selection summary (see above for reserves in the event of non runners): Kempton: 2.05 Pearl Castle 2.40 Balder Succes 3.15 Irving 3.50 Planet of Sound Newcastle: 1.45: Pinerolo 2.20 Figaro 2.55 Sun Cloud Good Luck! Last week’s results: After non runners were taken out the final selections and results were: Ascot: 2.05 Many Clouds – 2nd @ 2/1 2.40 Teaforthree – 2nd @ 5/1 3.15 Two Rockers – fell (11/2) 3.50 Cloudy Too – 2nd @ 7/1 Haydock: 2.20 Celestial Halo – 3rd @ 6/5 2.55 Hawkes Point – 6th @ 10/1 Wincanton: 3.35 Melodic Rendezvous – won @ Evs Three seconds and a faller at Ascot did nothing for the statistics so, with Celestial Halo looking below par on the heavy ground at Haydock, it was left to Melodic Rendezvous to rescue a little pride with the only win of the day. The financial result was a 5 point loss to one point level stakes.

LATE GOAL MEANS IT’S ALL SQUARE IN SOUTH YORKS DERBY After overnight and morning rain the afternoon turned out fine if cold. Rovers made one change, loan signing Jordan Bowery replacing the suspended Billy Sharp. A minutes applause was rendered in memory of Sir Tom Finney, who had died at the age of 91. Rovers defended the North Stand end in the first half, with Barnsley kicking off. The visitors went on the attack from the kick off and spent the early minutes in the Rovers half but they didn’t trouble Johnstone. Rovers got their game going and won a corner in the 8th minute, which came out of the Barnsley defence to Coppinger on the edge of the penalty area. His first time shot was deflected for another corner, which was headed over by Meite. Rovers had the better possession for the next ten minutes when Barnsley won a corner, which was eventually cleared. Again Rovers made the running mainly in midfield but found themselves a goal down in the 27th minute when a headed backpass bounced in front of Johnstone and over him leaving PROSCHWITZ the easy task of tapping into the net. Doncaster hit back and won a corner, following which Husband was clearly brought down but the referee, stood a yard away, decreed no penalty. Minutes later and Keegan fired over the bar from 25 yards. At the other end a corner to Barnsley was headed into the net but the referee had blown for a foul. Rovers piled on the pressure but hadn’t had a clear chance at goal until the 45th minute when a cross from Duffy on the left to the far post was dropped by Steele after colliding with Cranie and COPPINGER took full advantage to shoot into the empty net for an equaliser.

Rovers made a bright start to the second half and in the 51st minute Duffy took a free kick from 30 yards to the right of goal that was going under the bar but Steele got to it to tip over the bar. Minutes later, Duffy played a short corner and from the return cut in but his left foot drive was saved. Then, in the 55th minute, a good move on the Rovers left ended with Brown feeding COPPINGER, who hit a left footer into the bottom corner of the net. Barnsley hit back by bringing O’Brien on. In the 58th minute Proschwitz received the ball 25yards out but his excellent drive was tipped over the bar by Johnstone. Minutes later and former Rover, Martin Woods fired wide from 30 yards. In the 68th minute, O’Brien for Barnsley crossed from the left touchline for Proschwitz to head in from close range but Johnstone, diving to his left, palmed it out for a corner from which Ramage hit the bar. Successive corners to Barnsley in the 71st minute came to nothing. Then a free kick by Duffy on the left was met at the near post by the onrushing Brown but he headed over the bar. Barnsley were having their best spell of the game and Hunt fired wide from 25yards as time began to run out. They got their reward in the 89th minute when a low cross from the right byline was slammed in by PROSCHWITZ from close range. Into added time and a good move between Duffy and Husband down the Rovers left set Husband off on a run at goal but he put his shot across the goal and out the other side. They pressed for a winner and Duffy had a twenty five yarder saved but the referee blew time on a two-all draw, ROVERS - Sam Johnstone; Gabriel Tamas, Bongani Khumalo, Abdoulaye Meite, James Husband; James Coppinger, Paul Keegan (c), Dean Furman, Mark Dubffy; Jordan Bowery, Chris Brown Subs used - David Cotterill for Bowery 78 mins; Subs not used - Luke McCullough, Marc De Val, Harry Forrester, Alex Peterson, Enda Stevens, Jon Maxted gk Barnsley - Luke Steele; Peter Ramage, Tom Kennedy, Martin Cranie (c), Martin Woods, Jack Hunt, Emmanuel Frimpong, Paul Digby, Chris O’Grady, Nick Proschwitz, Dale Jennings Subs used - Jim O’Brien for Digby 56 mins; Paddy McCourt for Woods 80 mins; Subs not used - Lewin Nyatanga, Stephen Dawson, Liam Lawrence, Tomasz Cywka, Iain Turner gk Caution - Cranie 38 mins;
COPPINGER DISAPPOINTED Doncaster midfielder James Coppinger spoke to Rovers Player after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Barnsley at the Keepmoat Stadium. “It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet but we are really disappointed with the result. “I think we did well for 88 minutes and to then concede in the last minute is really frustrating. “Before Christmas we struggled and went on a bad run but we have turned it around. “We had big discussions over a certain period and we worked really hard on the training ground and it is starting to pay dividends. “We’ve got a few players back from injury and we’ve added a few new players, it is looking good. “The last six or seven games we have performed really well and the results have come, there is only a little frustration from today.”
WE’VE LOST TWO POINTS
Doncaster manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his sides 2-2 draw with Barnsley at the Keepmoat Stadium. “Obviously being 2-1 up we feel as if it is two points dropped when you concede that late in the game. “I thought for the majority of the game we did ever so well, especially going one-nil down. “We got ourselves ahead by putting a lot of pressure on them and playing good football, but for whatever reason we stopped doing that when we went 2-1 up. “We did our homework, we knew Proschwitz and O’Grady are a handful in the box and I felt we kept them out for the majority of the match. “As a defence we dropped too deep and as a result we couldn’t get out of our own half.
LATE WINNER HANDS MILLERS ALL THREE POINTS ROTHERHAM UNITED kept the pressure on the League One frontrunners with a last-gasp victory over plucky Stevenage. Wes Thomas put the Millers in front at the interval with his second goal in as many games but Francois Zoko looked to have earned the basement club a deserved point with an equaliser near the end. However, skipper Lee Frecklington led from the front as he broke visiting hearts’ with a well-taken strike just two minutes later to send the New York Stadium into raptures. The Millers returned to action following a fortnight’s break because of the inclement weather by retaining an unchanged starting line-up after their late victory over high-flying Leyton Orient. Recent recruit Nicky Adams was named amongst the home substitutes for his Millers bow with gaffer Steve Evans blessed with attacking options from the bench. The home side were quick out of the blocks and after Alex Revell earned a free-kick award, Ben Pringle struck a curling effort from distance which stung the palms of Chris Day. Minutes later, James Tavernier floated a harmless cross across the face of goal before Claude Davis was well-stationed to snuff out the danger as Lucas Akins got the better of Tavernier at the other end. Just past the quarter hour, Akins again left Tavernier in his wake before floating a delicate cross which saw ex-Millers trialist Francois Zoko rise highest but his downward header was straight down the throat of Adam Collin. Minutes later, Tavernier’s slide-ruled pass saw Pringle evade the sliding challenge of Jon Ashton to race down the left flank and his tantalising cross saw Revell nip infront of his marker to cleverly flick the ball goalwards but Chris Day was alert to parry the ball over his bar. Just shy of the half-hour mark, Revell dragged a shot harmlessly wide of the target before Kieran Agard was the first to see yellow when he needlessly prevented the visitors’ taking a quick free-kick deep inside their own half. Minutes later, Kari Arnason was left exposed one-onone with Zoko but the striker was firstly denied by the Icelandic international before scuffing the rebound strike as Rotherham cleared the danger. The visitors were arguably looking the most likely

County Senior League Rain yet again spoiled play in the County Senior League on Saturday, with only two games surviving the stormy weather. 2014 has not been a good year weather-wise for the County Senior League. On six of the seven match-days so far this year we have seen a substantial number of fixtures postponed. We can only hope for better weather in the coming weeks. Division One Joker FC’s six games winning run came to an end on Saturday, as they were held to a 2-2 away against third placed Wickersley. Jubilee Sports took advantage of Joker FC’s draw to close in on the leaders. They were 1-0 winners over Thorpe Hesley on the 3G pitch at Chaucer School. Matthew Turner scored the vital goal for Jubilee, who are now only three points behind the Joker with two games spare. The aforementioned Wickersley sit just two points Jubilee in a congested upper-half of the table. Meadowhall League Once again the majority of the scheduled games this weekend fell foul to the miserable weather, which has gripped our region so far this year. In the end only three games were played. Premier Division League leaders Brunsmeer Abbey AJW extended their winning league run to five games, as they beat Sharrow United 2-1 at Warminster Road. 23 year old Joe Highfield was on target twice for the in-form Brunsmeer. The Handsworth Turf Tavern remain within a point of now league leaders Brunsmeer Abbey AJW, with a comfortable 4-1 win over previously first placed Royal Earl at Davy Sports Club. Handsworth have played a game more more than Brunsmeer, but still have to host them in the league. Division One Intake Ball Inn claimed only their second win of the season, with an impressive 3-1 home win over mid-table Concord. Sadly for Intake the three points were not enough to lift them form the bottom of the standings, as they have an inferior goal differential to that of Penistone Church. Penistone host Intake in early-March at the Memorial Ground.
and the home side had Agard to thank for preventing the lively Luke Freeman from striking goalwards after a one-two with Darius Charles had split open the home defence. However, the home side stunned the visitors’ by breaking the deadlock four minutes before the break. Tavernier’s long punt upfield saw Revell challenge strongly with Day and Thomas’ had the goal at his mercy on the rebound but his screwed effort was blocked before Agard looked a certain scorer but again his strike was blocked bravely by a retreating Freeman. However, Stevenage’s escape proved short-lived as Mark Bradley drilled the ball back into the box and Thomas, who looked in an offside position, kept his nerve to calmly stroke the ball into the net giving Day no chance. The visitors rallied strongly and the Millers had Collin to thank for preserving their lead at the break when the ex-Carlisle stopper made a superb point-blank reflex save after Zoko ghosted in unnoticed to power a goalbound header. Seconds after the restart, Zoko again had the home side backtracking but his snap effort from an acute angle failed to trouble Collin. The home side were struggling to find their rhythm and they had a lucky escape when Filipe Morais’ dangerous cross saw Arnason’s attempted clearance narrowly clear his own crossbar. Minutes later, Simon Heslop had an effort deflected over following a period of pressure from the visitors before Agard’s fizzed cross was controlled smartly by Revell, who fired goalwards forcing Day to take evasive action to keep the ball out at the other end. Just short of the hour mark, Rotherham failed to clear a long-throw from Akins and Freeman showed fleet of foot to work a shooting position but he dragged his effort wide. At the other end, Tavernier intercepted a crossfield pass from Peter Hartley to release Pringle, who delivered a fantastic cross which was met by the head of Thomas, but he couldn’t control his effort as it looped over the bar. With the game in the balance, Tavernier was cautioned for hacking down Roarie Deacon before Ashton soon joined him in the referee’s book for a clumsy foul in the next phase of play. The visitors came within a whisker of the equaliser when clever interplay on the edge of the box saw Heslop bear down on goal but Arnason came out of nowhere with a superb sliding challenge to retain Rotherham’s slender lead. However, Stevenage were finally rewarded for their pressure when they got back on level terms when Jimmy Smith’s centre was flicked on into the path of Zoko, who controlled smartly before firing into the corner of the net. However, the visitors’ joy proved short-lived though as Rotherham regained the lead just two minutes later thanks to skipper Frecklington. Following a ball forward, sub Haris Vuckic injected pace into the move to play the ball into the path of Frecklington, who weighed up his options before curling a fantastic effort which beat the outstretched hand of Day before nestling into the bottom corner of the net.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 NEW FA CHELSEA CUP DATE STOPPER CONFIRMED SIGNS UP SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday can confirm the rearranged date for the FA Cup fifth round clash with Charlton. The game will take place at Hillsborough on Monday 24 February (7.45pm). The original tie last Saturday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Ordinarily, the fixture would have been played on Tuesday 25 February. However, UEFA rules deem that FA Cup games are not permitted to take place on the same day as European fixtures. Tickets for the original tie remain valid and discounted prices will still be in place. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Owls Megastore, at the Sheffield Wednesday Online Shop or by telephone on 0871 900 1867 (£2 booking fee per ticket). The winners will play League 1 side Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the quarter finals. The Owls’ Championship game with QPR, scheduled for Tuesday 25 February, is now postponed and a revised date will be confirmed in due course.
Sheffield Wednesday have signed versatile defender Sam Hutchinson from Premiership giants Chelsea on an emergency loan deal. Hutchinson will stay with the Owls for 28 days. The 24-year-old is primarily a centre back but can also move across to right back if required. He has been on the books of Chelsea since the age of seven, graduating through the ranks to earn his first professional contract at Stamford Bridge. Hutchinson debuted for the Blues against Everton from the bench in the top tier before making his maiden start facing QPR in the League Cup. A call-up to the England Under-21 squad swiftly followed after he had already earned recognition at Under18 and Under-19 level. The Londoner went on to become a regular reserve team captain for Chelsea and then enjoyed a fruitful loan spell with Championship side Nottingham Forest during the 2012/13 campaign. Hutchinson made nine appearances for Forest, scoring one goal along the way, before moving to the Dutch top flight with Vitesse Arnhem last summer. He was recalled by Chelsea in January.
BEST RETURNS TO OWLS SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday have signed Leon Best from Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers on an emergency loan deal. Hillsborough is familiar territory for Best, who has enjoyed two previous loan spells with the Owls. He initially moved to S6 from Southampton in August 2005 and made two appearances, scoring once, before injury cut short the temporary switch. Best returned for a second loan stint later the same season and made a further three starts, scoring one more goal. He also posted loans with QPR, Bournemouth and Yeovil Town before joining Coventry City on a permanent basis from Saints for a reported figure of £650,000. Best’s promising pedigree with the Sky Blues led to a move to Newcastle United, which preceded a £3m switch to Blackburn in July 2012. He has made 151 league starts in total, scoring exactly 50 goals. The 27-year-old also has seven caps under the belt for Republic of Ireland. He will wear shirt number 42 whilst with Wednesday. The Owls’ Championship game against QPR at Hillsborough has been rescheduled for Tuesday 18 March (7.45pm). The fixture has twice been postponed due to Wednesday’s progress in the FA Cup. Earlier, it was confirmed that Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Charlton will take place on Monday 24 February (7.45pm).
SEMEDO BLOW SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
The Owls have been dealt an injury blow with news that Jose Semedo faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines. Semedo fell awkwardly whilst making a challenge during the Owls’ home defeat to Wigan on Tuesday night. Head physiotherapist Paul Smith told swfc.co.uk: “Semi has fractured his fibula and also has ligament damage. “He will see the surgeon in London on Friday and we expect him to be out for six to eight weeks.”

MORE CUP HEROICS FOR THE BLADES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
The Blades are through to the last eight of the FA Cup with Budweiser. Two late goals from Chris Porter secured the path for the lowest ranked team still in the competition. Forest went ahead through Jamie Paterson but a second half equaliser from Conor Coady set the scene before substitute Porter stole the show. Doyle returned to the starting line-up and reclaimed the captain’s armband for the fixture. McGinn dropped to the bench to accommodate Doyle, which was the only change from the team that beat Shrewsbury. Forest’s starting line-up included three former Blades Henderson, Reid and Halford. Prior to kick-off there was a measure of contrast. An impeccable minute’s silence for Sir Tom Finney was followed by a rousing rendition of the Greasy Chip Buttie anthem. There was very little to choose between the sides in the opening 20 minutes, United again proving a step up in quality is possible. Coady was forced to block from Majewski after Forest countered a Blades break and then Brayford fired weakly at de Vries with his unflavoured left foot. A spell of play then centred around Baxter, who saw two efforts saved by de Vries, the first a long-ranger with power and the second after robbing Reid, who thought he was fouled. In addition, Lascelles was booked for a crude challenge on the Blades striker. Halford cut in from the right and curled
a half volley over before Forest took the lead on 28 minutes - the first time the Blades have been behind in the competition this year. Reid’s near post cross saw PATERSON’s deft header loop over Howard’s head and into the corner of the net. The Blades hit back positively. Collins headed a Baxter free-kick wide and following a break, in which Halford fouled Murphy, Baxter played in Scougall, whose shot was saved by de Vries, low down to his left. Late on in the first half the chances dried up but again the Blades matched the visitors and with Flynn, Scougall and Murphy all running at the Forest back four there was still room for optimism, especially kicking towards the Kop in the second half. Harris was booked for a foul on Cox early in the second half but the Blades began positively and put Forest on the back foot. Murphy almost got on the end of a Brayford cross and then two corners caused problems. From the first a Maguire shot was blocked by Jara and then a volley from Scougall was on target but straight at de Vries. Howard was forced to bat away efforts from Paterson and Cox in the space of two minutes but the Blades were soon back on the attack. From a Scougall run, Murphy saw his shot blocked but the leveller arrived on 66 minutes. Brayford’s cross from the right looked comfortable for de Vries but he spilled the ball and after confusion with Lascelles, COADY picked up the loose ball and placed neatly into the unguarded goal. Maguire was booked for a foul on Reid and the subsequent free-kick from the Forest skipper was tipped over the
crossbar by Howard. Collins was the next to be shown a yellow card, for a foul on Mackie, and the resulting set-piece saw Halford head over Reid’s delivery. With the tension in all stands clear in the final ten minutes, a long-range effort from Reid was just wide and at the other end a Scougall run presented a chance for Flynn, but his shot was pushed away by de Vries. Porter replaced Baxter late on but the drama was just about to start. Murphy went outside Halford and the former Blades loanee slid and handled the cross, referee Oliver immediately pointing to the penalty spot. PORTER had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes but took responsibility and sent de Vries the wrong way. And that’s not all. Deep into the six added minutes, Murphy again went around his marker and this time played across the goal where PORTER added the necessary touch. Halford went up front for Forest but the game was over and the Blades went through to the last eight and a potential Steel City derby. Blades: Howard, Harris (Hill 90), Brayford, Maguire, Flynn, Doyle, Baxter (Porter 86), N. Collins, Coady (McGinn 90), Scougall, Murphy. Unused: Hill, Miller, Long, Kennedy, De Girolamo. Forest: de Vries, D. Collins, Henderson (Djebbour 70), Reid, Fox, Halford, Lascelles, Jara, Paterson, Majewski (Abdoun 78), Cox (Mackie 67). Unused: Darlow, Harding, Greening, Derbyshire.
PLAYERS DERERVE ALL THE CREDIT MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk Nigel Clough heaped praise on to his players, following Sunday’s dramatic 3-1 last 16 success over Nottingham Forest. On the game, Clough felt his side were good value to progress to the last eight of the world’s most famous club cup competition. He remarked: “It isn’t just a tremendous result, it was an excellent performance. Even at 1-0 down at half-time we told the players to keep going and believing and they did. “Over the course of the game we just about deserved the win, Forest put us under a lot of pressure at 1-1. They have got a lot of quality and let’s not forget they were 16 games unbeaten ahead of this one. “We were worried when we fell behind, but we didn’t chase the game too quickly and our patience was rewarded with the equaliser, which set up an intriguing last 25 minutes because both teams wanted to find a winner.” When asked about the draw for the quarter-finals, which was made at Wembley during the first-half of Sunday’s encounter, the Gaffer joked: “We told the players the news of the draw at half-time, just as we were about to go out for the second-half. We thought about it, then just thought ‘what the hell’ and told them. “Some of the lads didn’t believe us anyway so when they came back in after the game we told them it was Brighton or Hull away!”
