Copley’s Column

I mentioned last week that Russ Dennett’s open mic night at the Yew Tree often produces a surprise guest, and this week was no exception with the appearance of Hugh ‘Jock’ Lightbody, (pictured) ,lead singer with top band Past Masters. Jock, late of the Midland at Killamarsh is now steward at Brimington Social Club, where I shall be visiting, at the time of writing, on Tuesday night to see Steve Birks performing his tribute to Neil Diamond. Jock has an excellent voice and was well received by the audience. It is refreshing in the current economic climate to see a busy pub, and much credit goes to landlord Andrew Jarvis, a great supporter of live music. Thursday night at the Victoria Inn, Dronfield, was excellent as usual with the appearance of local duo Acoustic Lily comprising Hannah Lily and Russ Dennett. The Victoria has recently received an award from CAMRA for being the most improved pub after a great refurbishment by owner Chris Snell. My award for the most improved singer has to go to Hannah Lily who gets better and better. I have not been too well this week, causing me to stay home on Friday and Saturday night and as cabin fever was hitting me, I was pleased to receive an invitation from my close pal Steve Birks to accompany him to his gig at Whittington WMC. We arrived to be greeted by a lovely guy, George who made us very welcome .He has recently retired after serving on the committee of this lovely club for the past thirty two years. Steve as Vincent was very impressive, with great vocals and guitar playing and being the true professional looked incredibly smart on stage. I received a phone call from Bernie Clifton

informing me that he was bringing an author to meet me for breakfast. He arrived with Jonathan Lee from Barnsley, a very likeable and charismatic young man who has had his first novel published entitled The Radio, which is a black comedy which centres round the decline of the lovable, yet hapless George Poppleton, a middle aged henpecked husband and father who finds an old transistor radio in his loft, and much to the fury of his wife and daughter, his obsession with listening to the radio drives him on an unexpected journey, fuelled by the painful memories of the suicide of his only son many years before. The book can be purchased from Amazon. Regrettably, my football team, Sheffield Wednesday, failed to beat Charlton Athletic in the cup match denying us the prospect of a mouth-watering local derby.

JACK WHITEHALL Weekly Wit With...

The month sees one of the UK’s hottest young comedy talents, Jack Whitehall, embark on his first ever live stand-up arena tour, performing across the country. Jack will make his debut at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Thursday 13th March 2014. Tickets purchased online and through the ticket hotline are priced £31.35 & £27.50 NUS including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £29.93 & 26.25 NUS including booking fee. ‘Jack Whitehall Gets Around’ is a brand new show that will see Jack performing in arenas ‘in the round’, a UK first for a solo stand-up tour. This tour is his first since his critically acclaimed sell out 2011 stand-up show, Let’s Not Speak Of This Again and will run over two weeks in March next year. Taking in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cardiff and London, the tour will see Jack return to his stand-up roots. Over the last few years, Jack has firmly established himself as one of the country’s most successful young talents. He cut his teeth at the Edinburgh Fringe, taking up four sell out shows over three consecutive years and earning an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination in the process with his debut show Jack Whitehall: Learning Difficulties. Jack has gone on to host Live At The Apollo and perform at the Royal Variety Performance, as well as the internationally prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Canada. In addition, he has been nominated by Variety as one of the ’10 Comics to Watch’ and in December 2012 won the King of Comedy award at the annual British Comedy Awards. In addition to his stand-up, Jack has also built a successful TV and writing career. As well as his role as JP in the award winning C4 series Fresh Meat, Jack has also written and stars in the acclaimed BBC3 sitcom Bad Education and is a panellist on Sky1’s hit show, A League Of Their Own. Tickets for Jack’s Sheffield show are available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk.

Did you hear about the man who got electrocuted eating his muesli? He bit into a live current. I came home from the auction with a signed photo of Ronnie Corbett, while my brother bought a signed photo of Ronnie Barker. So it was a good buy from me, and a good buy from him. Carrots may be good for your eyes. But alcohol will double your vision. A man received the following text from his neighbour: I am so sorry Bob. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been tapping your wife, day and night when you’re not around. In fact, more than you. I’m not getting any at home, but that’s no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won’t happen again. The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife and killed her. A few moments later, a second text came in: Damn autocorrect. I meant “wifi”, not “wife”. I was asked to help design the first Monopoly board. I thought, I’ll give it a go. So Russia invades Ukraine, years after they broke away from them, Be warned Scotland, be warned. I oink, therefore I ham Just got a note saying that my hot beverage was okay to drink. It was a safe tea message. I said to my wife, “I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said. You know, ‘I always put football over you’.” “And?” she replied. I said, “Well I’ve just been down the travel agents and booked us a holiday for the summer.” “Ooh, where we going?” She asked. “Brazil,” I replied. I stole a TV from my next door neighbour’s kitchen but I think it’s broken. Every channel is a slow spinning bowl of porridge.

SPIRITUALIST

place, and then creeps back to suckle her young at night without daddy hare knowing. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

The Connections of March When the Equinox arrives we focus our energy on the shifting balance of the seasons as they merge from one month to another. We turn our attention to the warmer weather and our gardens: projects need starting and finishing. This is a time for planting new growth, and this month I will be planting my peas and potatoes, but this will be done with guidance from my book “Planting by the Moon.” In the midst of this we sometimes forget that in order to tune into the Earth’s inexorable rhythm, we must tend to ourselves. The Equinox gives us time to re-balance and an opportunity to explore what is out there. When the Spring Equinox arrives the figure of the hare is the totem animal of this festival, and it also provides the origins of the Easter Bunny and all that lovely chocolate! As hares are associated with energy and life forces it is no wonder that this month’s moon is called the Hare Moon. The hares are frisky and excited, and they shed their coats and start the boxing courtship. They do this so they can dance before the grass grows dense enough for them to hide. They are often referred to as being “as mad as a March Hare.” This saying is from the courtship of the hares and their rituals. This month is also the feast of Ostara (or Eostre) an Anglo Saxon Goddess of fertility. She sheltered the mad hare from predators. Hares are unpredictable, skilful and crafty, and at times they are known to harm their young. But the lady hare (sometimes called a “jill”) moves her young into a different

The March Crystal - Bloodstone In Ancient times Bloodstone was thought to possess magical qualities including warding off the Evil Eye. Keep this dark green crystal with red flecks in your pocket to avoid any obstacles blocking your way. It also possesses strong healing properties which include helping to combat anaemia and it brings vitality back into your life. The March Animal - Wolf It is important in March for people to maintain their self esteem and integrity, and trust in their inner knowing, even when feeling misunderstood. You are being spiritually and psychically protected at all times. Call upon the Wolf when you feel lost with regard to a relationship, project or career, and also if you are generally confused about your life’s pathway. You are a natural born teacher and you need to enhance these skills and pass on the benefit of your great knowledge. The March Flower - Daffodil The significance of the daffodil is communication and is very connected to the Archangel Gabriel. The daffodil helps to bring a beneficial mental attitude to children and adults who have a learning disabilities. Daffodil people are loving and will help anyone in distress. The daffodil is also the national flower of Wales and St Davids Day (the day of the patron saint of Wales) falls on 1st March. £450,000 GRANT WARMTH SCHEME WARNS OF LINK FOR HOSPITALS BETWEEN COLD HOMES & ILL HEALTH With a month of freezing temperatures and 18°C for the bedroom, but can be higher OAP TRIAL predicted, a local warmth scheme, which is depending on personal preference, your age A safety scheme led by a Sheffield medic which helps to prevent frail older people being harmed in hospital has received a £450,000 grant. The Health Foundation has secured the funding from the British Geriatric Society and its fund Closing The Gap In Patient Safety. Grant money will be used by the foundation to develop its Failsafe tool, which provides a checklist which hospital staff can follow when caring for elderly patients. The project is led by Dr Tom Downes, consultant geriatrician at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Dr Adam Gordon, the BGS’s honorary secretary, said: “This award brings with it the opportunity to ensure that more older people arriving at acute hospitals will receive consistent, safe, evidence-based care regardless of the time of day or week they are admitted. We hope the improvements supported by the award will deliver considerable benefits to the most frail and vulnerable of NHS patients”. The tool was piloted in eight hospitals across England and Scotland in Autumn last year. Partner organisations supporting the failsafe scheme include NHS England, the Royal College of Physicians and Age UK.

NOVEL TELLS OF FORGOTTEN BLADES LEGEND A campaign to rescue a forgotten Sheffield United hero from obscurity is to be launched on Saturday with the publication of a new novel based on his life story. Rabbi Howell was a key player in the Blades’ championship winning side of 1897/8 – and was also the first Romany to play for England. But two weeks before the end of the season he was mysteriously sacked, effectively ending his career at the age of 30. Rabbi was eventually buried in an unmarked grave in a cemetery in Preston – and author Steven Kay hopes his book will lead to a headstone being erected in his memory. Steven’s book The Evergreen in Red and White was launched in Annie’s Bar at the Copthorne Sheffield Hotel on Bramall Lane. Guest of honour was Rab’s great grandson Nicholas Pomfret, who is Deputy Mayor of Preston. Steven said Blades’ folklore hinted that Rabbi had been fired for match fixing, but that made no sense. “Why would such a loyal servant do that, just as he was about to achieve glory? My research has led to this book on Rab’s last turbulent year in Sheffield”. The book tell how Rabbi, who also played for Liverpool and Preston North End, abandoned his family including a newborn baby after an affair with another woman – a great scandal in Victorian society. Steven added: “This is the story of a man torn between two women and the decisions he had to make which changed everyone’s lives around him forever”. The book is available to purchase on Amazon.

available to vulnerable people in Sheffield to help with heating and insulation measures, is raising awareness of the link between cold homes and ill health. Cold temperatures can have a detrimental effect on health, for example increasing the risk of chest infections and circulatory problems. With this in mind, npower Health Through Warmth is working with local organisations in Sheffield to remind people that help may be available. Elaine Midwinter, npower Health Through Warmth scheme manager, comments: “This winter has been relatively mild so far and, for many of us, it is not until we experience a cold snap and need to use our heating systems more that they tend to break down. However, with freezing temperatures predicted throughout February, we’d like to remind everyone that Health Through Warmth is here to help vulnerable people if they don’t have heating or if it’s broken down.” To help prevent your health being affected by the cold, you should make sure the rooms in your house are kept warm. The recommended temperatures are 21°C for the living room

and level of mobility. Help from npower Health Through Warmth may be available to vulnerable homeowners who have a long term, cold-related illness, a low income with little or no savings and who are unable to fully fund measures, such as a new boiler or heating system. You do not have to be, or become, an npower customer to benefit from the scheme. Since the scheme was founded in 2000, more than 82,000 vulnerable residents in England and Wales have been referred to npower Health Through Warmth for aid with heating and insulation. More than £66million has been levered to help fund the work required, which includes £1.9million from charitable organisations. In addition, over £8.9million has been contributed from the unique npower Health Through Warmth Crisis Fund. For more information about Health Through Warmth, or to find out if you or someone you know could be eligible for help, visit www.healththroughwarmth.com. CITY COUNCIL ISSUES DEMENTIA SUPPORT - CAN YOU HELP? ROGUE TRADER ALERT SURVEY Ways are being considered to support local Sheffield City Council is warning householders against employing people who call at the door offering building work or general repairs. The warning comes in the wake of the continuing bad weather across our region and at a time when many householders will be looking for reassurance about the condition of their homes, most commonly roofs, guttering and fences. Sheffield City Council Trading Standards Officers have already followed up on a series of complaints involving rogue traders cold calling at the door offering roofing repairs, driveway cleaning and gardening services. Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Jack Scott said, “We want to get the message out there to Sheffield residents about these unscrupulous traders. We know they prey especially on the elderly and vulnerable within our communities, demanding payment in cash straight away. We would like to ask the public, if you are concerned about this type of trader in your area, approaching yourself, neighbours or family members, then please report your concerns as soon as possible. It helps us build a detailed picture of the types of rogue practices and those involved, and we can then intervene on behalf of the consumer.” All too often, consumers are tricked into agreeing to unnecessary, expensive but poor quality work. Without any written contract or the opportunity to exercise their rights to cancel, people can find themselves at the mercy of the worst excesses of rogue trading. Those involved in this type of offending operate across our region and Sheffield City Council tackles the problem with a coordinated approach involving prosecutions, awareness campaigns and intelligence sharing across Yorkshire and the Humber. In cases where Council Trading Standards officers have been able to confront the traders and challenge the legality of the work, householders have been saved from paying thousands of pounds in cash. To report these types of incidents contact Sheffield City Council Trading Standards on 0114 2736290 or trading.standards@ sheffield.gov.uk

CAMRA CALL FOR SWIFT ACTION STEP BACK IN TIME FOR CAVENDISH CANCER CARE

CAMRA urges swift action to support pubs as closures rise to 28 a week. CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is pressing the Government to act now to help save pubs by: Pressing ahead with plans for a Pubs Watchdog to protect licensees from high rents and beer prices charged by large pub companies Closing planning loopholes to ensure pubs cannot be lost without planning permission being sought Freezing the rate of beer duty in next month’s Budget The latest CGA-CAMRA Pub Tracker, covering the period of April-December 2013, shows that the number of net pub closures in the UK has risen from 26 to 28 per week– showing that much more needs to be done to protect pubs. This disappointing increase in pub closures comes as CAMRA is calling on the Government to press ahead with plans for a Pubs Watchdog to ensure a fair power balance between the large pub companies and their licensees. The tied pub model has come under increased criticism as recent research suggests a shocking 57% of licensees tied to the big pub companies earn less than £10,000 a year*. The latest closure figures show that leased and tenanted

pubs account for 16 of the 28 pub closures occurring every week, supporting the need for urgent action to address rents and beer prices charged by the large pub companies. “Pubs are unnecessarily closing as tied licensees struggle to make their businesses succeed thanks to increased rents and inflated beer prices. It is vital that the Government step in to redress the balance with the implementation of an independent Pubs Watchdog and an option for licensees of large pub companies to opt for market rent only agreements allowing them to buy beer on the open market at cheaper prices.” Mike Benner, CAMRA’s Chief Executive. But there are other reasons that pubs are shutting, including the threat from conversion to supermarkets or betting shops, something which CAMRA say also needs to be addressed: “It is currently possible to convert a pub into a betting shop, pay-day loan store or supermarket without the need for planning permission, making it far too easy for valued community pubs to be lost. We are pressing the Government to act to close this planning loophole.” A further reason for pub closures is the rate of duty charged on beer.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This week we gave a presentation about Radio Nightingale to the Talbot Lane Methodist Church Ladies Group. The ladies were interested to hear about the history, behind-the-scenes and the community work of Radio Nightingale. It was a pleasure to meet them all and thank you to them for their warm welcome. Amongst all of the day-to-day activities it’s easy to lose sight of the purpose of hospital radio and looking back over the history in preparation for the presentation acts as a timely reminder. It was particularly appropriate that one of the original members of the station, David Stotton, had been in touch with us recently after a tidy out of his attic had unearthed some further pieces of that history. David sent us a number of newspaper clippings from the early events of Radio Nightingale along with some audio material - these are on our Facebook page. Hospital radio exists to bring comfort or entertainment to people who find themselves lonely or bored whilst in the unfamiliar surroundings of the hospital environment. Different to other radio stations, hospital radio provides a personal service as this true story from the Radio Nightingale history shows... One Monday evening, some years ago a nurse came into our library room and asked that I play Cliff Richard, any song, as soon as possible for a patient. Sensing an unusual urgency about this request I started the programme a little bit early and after a brief good evening played the request. Having completed the request I carried on with the programme and no more was thought of it. Several months later I bumped into an old friend of mine at a local rock gig and having known him and his family for many years I asked “how’s your mum” to which he replied “she passed away three months ago”. After offering my condolences, knowing that I was involved with Radio Nightingale he said “she was in your hospital and they played a request for her on Nightingale”. He didn’t need to go any further; I knew what he was going to say next, “I played it – Cliff Richard”. “Yes”, he replied, “her favourite song, all the family was sat round listening to it and as it ended she said ‘I’m going to heaven with Cliff’”.

CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

When recently going through some of my files about clubs I came across an interesting headline from the CIU Club Journal, dated November 2000. The then General Secretary, Kevin Smyth, had declared that: “Our Heritage is not our Future.” This phrase was actually from a Scottish Courage campaign but he explained that it applied just as well to the CIU and its clubs. There were almost 3000 member clubs at that time, whereas the current figure is hovering around the 2000 mark. At the dawn of a new century, the General Secretary stated that a proud history does not necessarily equate with a viable future. The CIU were to look at ‘why, when and where we will be in 10 years time.’ Those ten years have gone and Kevin Smyth stepped down from his post several years ago. The CIU did make some changes with restructuring taking place within the executive body including allowing women to hold positions. It’s worth revisiting some of the points made by Mr Smyth who wanted to bring things up to date as much as possible so that clubs wouldn’t be left behind, and left empty, as society changed. Questions he raised are still relevant today such as what facilities clubs provide, whether or not they meet the needs of members of all ages and what can be done to attract new members. Catering was mentioned and whether this helped bring in more people looking for more than a packet of crisps. The need to fully utilize clubs, using all their rooms with different types of entertainment for varied audiences being offered was also picked up. Mr Smyth also saw an increasing role for women on club committees that would ‘improve their outlook.’ The physical appearance of the club and how it presents itself to the outside world were also to be considered with a critical eye to see how these could be improved. Some clubs would have heeded his call to consider these questions in order to change their fortunes for the better. Perhaps some felt that their heritage was enough to survive on after all. But in his view, the modern world brought many more attractions than ever before, all competing for member’s time and moneywhat they did in the past might not take them into the future. Clubs needed to look at themselves regularly to ensure they provide an environment in which members and those allimportant potential members feel comfortable.

STARS IN STRYPES of particular crowd pleasers Hometown Girls and a cover of Bo Diddley’s You Can’t Judge a Book By The Cover. The Strypes Guitarist Josh McClorey confronted the Leadmill, Sheffield audience with a careful mix of attitude 22nd February 2014 and grace, and his Irish charm and lashing opening riffs set the scene for his band mates Preceding the Strypes on the stage was to showcase what Andy Gill refers to as their fellow Irish band The Turning, whose rock ‘n’ roll vibe served as a taster of what was to “dizzying burst of energy”. 16-year-old front man Ross Farrelly showed the poise and come from the Strypes. energy of a veteran showman. Opening with one of their flagship singles, The Strypes’ show in Sheffield gave full What A Shame , the Irish four-piece outfit weight to predictions of the band’s exciting created an instant buzz reminiscent of the and prosperous future. Their youthful Rolling Stones and Yardbirds vibe of the 60s energy, passion and vitality juxtaposes their and 70s, with a lashing of Rory Gallagher astonishing maturity and stage presence, and thrown in for good measure. the backing from Rocket Music Management The powerful group showed no intention of being tamed, with a pulsating encore consisting owner Elton John comes at no surprise. 26th April NOT TO BE MISSED!

BURY TOMORROW By Kt Evans

tantalised eardrums with enormous singles ‘Watcher’ along with ‘Man On Fire,’ it’s more than evident to hear a grittier metalcore With a firm goal of making 2014 the very slant to their new recordings. Whether it best year of the bands career to date, Bury be cranking up the decibel meter, throwing Tomorrow are bolstering up for a belter of together punching baselines or tightening the a summer. Having previously announced a release date of May 2014 for their forthcoming screws on their overall sound, the outcome of almost two years without releasing an album studio album ‘Runes,’ we caught up with lead has had a tremendously positive impact on vocalist Dani Winter-Baites to discuss one of the band. “We really tried to go back to old the most anticipated releases of the spring. school metalcore and took a big influence from “2014 is going so quickly already!” reveals Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying, all Dani, one fifth of the Southampton based music we listen to and wanted to create within hardcore clan. “We’ve got our UK run of shows towards the end of April and throughout the new album. This has made the album itself really comfortable for us. Of course Kristian May which then leads into our Slamdunk set. (Dawson, lead guitarist who joined in 2013) We’re slightly apprehensive to be perfectly has had a huge influence; he listens to the same honest with you. We’ve had a little while off music as all of us which played a massive the road, but I’m sure after the 2nd show I’ll influence on the new album…it worked better be fine…it’s what people in bands are born than we could have imagined. He really is a to do!” Famed for their massive live sets, fantastic guitarist, he’s so quick! We are now enormous riffs and hell blazing vocals, the the best band we can be and we’re so pleased band also have a string of European shows about that.” announced alongside Belgium’s Groezrock and Following on from their 2012 smash “Union The Impericon Festival 2014. Combining this Of Crows” which took Bury Tomorrow with an extensive string of shows throughout from local gig hoppers to players on the Austria, Italy, Germany and France, it really is international festival circuit, the step up to go-go-gadget-go for the Bury Tomorrow clan. ‘Runes’ is stunningly remarkable. Every bit as “We’re heading off to Europe in early April anthemically powerful as you should imagine which we’re all massively looking forward to. it will be, in an attempt not to give the game I’ve got a pretty exciting summer ahead of me away…each and every one of you are in for a I must say!” spectacular treat… now sshhh! However, the reason fans pulses are racing seems down to one simple reason alone… ‘Runes’ is out 26th May 2014 through Nuclear the new album ‘Runes.’ Having already Blast.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

COMMERCIAL VENUES; CHALLENGE OR CHAV? This week, I’ve visited a commercial venue and had a few fish; nothing big, just roach and bream, but enough to keep me happy for the day and provide some fun, which is what it’s all about as far as I’m concerned. Having said that, I posted a quick snap on my Facebook page and was instantly met with some disparaging comments about my choice of venue...but what do you think? Personally, I enjoy a bit of winter fun on my local venue, and meet many anglers who feel the same way. I’m guilty of being indecisive when it comes to actually picking a likely spot to sit, so therefore find myself a jack of all trades and most certainly a master of none, so sit in silent envy as the resident expert proceeds to catch a dozen fish to my measly one! I think it’s a common problem though; anglers turn up for the first time without too much information, ask the site staff for some guidance; “...there is a 30 in there mate” (isn’t there always?) and slope off to the nearest comfortable peg. They then fail to catch much, and that is the fault of either the venue, weather or the staff; never the angler who may well have failed to apply any watercraft to his choices, but there are benefits to fishing the commercial scene.

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

There is always the angler who does catch, and catches well, and more importantly, enjoys it! This is the angler content to visit the same venue, to fish for the same fish, probably using the same bait and same method perhaps even from the same peg..... but enjoys it immensely. And who am I to argue? In truth, I, like many others are jealous; I’d love to turn up at the venue, knowing it inside out, set up, cast out, catch from the off and then continue to swing fish after fish into a waiting net, but it rarely happens. I’ll get there, dither about choice of pool, mither about choice of peg, then proceed to get it completely wrong and come away feeling I could do better. Occasionally, I’ll drop onto a peg which is black with fish and bag up, but it’s more luck than judgement, and I can only put it down to the fact that I don’t do enough homework, but it’s still fun! So why the unsettling remarks? Apparently, some anglers think that commercial venues are beneath them. Not worth fishing because it’s easy, not worth fishing because the carp only go to twenty pounds, not worth fishing because they have a syndicate ticket, not worth fishing as no skill is required. I’d argue that to be consistent on a commercial, win a big match or even something as grand as Fish O’ Mania, then a considerable amount of skill is needed! And if you enjoy it, who cares?! If I fished the same peg week after week, then I would no doubt up my catch rate as I learn more about the swim, but that’s not why I go. I saw a stoat the other day, and a kingfisher, and some oystercatchers wheeling low over the water...that’s why I go, the fish are a bonus if I’m lucky, but I love it. I certainly don’t fish to please others, least of all Facebook Fishing Police and neither should you!

races. Incidentally, because of the uncertainty about getting a run and the reasonable prices on offer on the day, I do not recommend ante-post betting for the Cheltenham Festival.

This is a low key weekend and, with the year’s biggest event to follow next week, it is probably worth keeping Saturday stakes to a minimum. The top race this weekend is the Sandown Imperial Cup where the winner can qualify for a bonus if going on to win at Cheltenham next week. As such it is worth watching the race carefully as some trainers do attempt this feat. There will be six races on Channel 4, four NH races from Sandown and two flat races from Wolverhampton’s all-weather track.

Tuesday: 1.30 Vautour, if absent Irving then Gilgamboa, Quickpick Vic, Ivan Grozny, Art of Payroll, each way Sea Lord (currently best priced at 50/1); 2.05 Champagne Fever, if absent Trifolium then Balder Succes, Art of Logistics, Felix Yonger, Next Sensation, each way Ted Veale (currently best priced at 25/1); 2.40 Bury Parade, if absent Burton Port then Midnight Appeal, Ardkilly Witness, Planet of Sound, Tour des Champs, Golden Chieftain, each way Pacha du Polder (currently best priced at 33/1); 3.20 Hurricane Fly, if absent Melodic Rendezvous, then My Tent or Yours, Our Conor, Jezki, The New One, each way P’tit Zig (currently best priced at 50/1); 4.00 Quevega, if absent Sirene D’Ainay then Glen’s Melody, Highland Retreat, Cailin Annamh, Mischievous Milly, Down Ace, each way D’Oyly Carte (currently best priced at 25/1) 4.40 Corrin Wood, if absent Black Thunder then Si C’Etait Vrai, Holywell, Standing Ovation, Spring Heeled, Just a Par, each way Sharney Sike (currently best priced at 100/1); 5.15 Art of Logistics, if absent King Vuvuzela, then The Cockney Mackem, God’s Own, Mullaghanoe River, each way Shanpallas (currently best priced at 33/1).

Sandown: 2.05 E.B.F. William Hill National Hunt Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final, Grade 3, 4-7yo, 2m 4f: It is difficult to rule out any of the 19 runners in this competitive finale. However, based on their efforts last time out my top six are: Theatrebar; Goohar; Full Shift; Brother Brian; Classic Move; and Strollawaynow. Theatrebar earns a narrow vote over the rest through his 7 ½ length fourth behind Join the Clan at Market Rasen last time out. That race was run in a fast time and could throw up a few winners yet. 2.40 William Hill Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 0-135, 3m 110yds: Winds and Waves gets the call here with the reserve order being: Little Chip; Noble Legend; The Potting Shed; Tempest River; and Kilcrea Asla. 3.15 William Hill Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle, Grade 3, 4yo+, 2m 110yds: John Ferguson’s New Year’s Eve can land his hat trick here after a win “going away” last time out at Market Rasen where he beat Rumble of Thunder by 3 ½ lengths. Next best (in my order of preference) are: Gassin Golf; Skint; Swing Bowler; Little Jon; and Baltimore Rock. 3.50 EBF Stallions/TBA Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race, Listed, 4-7yo, 2m 110yds: Fergal O’Brien’s Pitter Patter gets the vote to see off Pectora in this one although Avispa, Side Step and Diligent could also play prominent roles. Wolverhampton: 2.20 Ladbrokes Lady Wulfruna Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 7f 32yds: This is a mighty tight race on my figures. Bertiewhittle gets the call by the slimmest of margins over Grey Mirage, Hasopop, Alfred Hutchinson (also declared for the 2.55), Alben Star, Highland Knight and Chookie Royale. 2.55 Ladbrokes Lincoln Trial Handicap, 4yo+, 0-105, 1m 141yds: This is another very tight and competitive race. If Alfred Hutchinson turns out for this one and not for the preceding race he gets the call. Tellovoi just about scrapes first reserve position ahead of Ishikawa, Loyalty, Whispering Warrior and Spin Artist.

Wednesday: 1.30 (Assuming that Vautour runs in the Supreme on Tuesday) Racing Pulse, if absent Gilgamboa then Captain Cutter, Royal Boy, Briar Hill, Deputy Dan, Sure Reef, Quickpick Vic, Art of Payroll, each way Oscar Hoof (currently best priced at 40/1); 2.05 Champagne Fever, if absent Corrin Wood then Black Thunder, Taquin du Seuil, Uxizandre, Holywell, each way Ardkilly Witness (currently best priced at 50/1); 2.40 Medinas, if absent Flaxen Flare then Western Jo, Sametegal, Drum Valley, each way Streets of New York (currently best priced at 66/1); 3.20 Benefficient, if absent Sire de Grugy then Hinterland, Module, Arvika Ligeonnaire, Sizing Europe, Al Ferof, Special Tiara, Baily Green, Alderwood, each way Savello (currently best priced at 100/1); 4.00 Quantitativeeasing, if absent Balthazar King then Boxer Georg, Diamond Harry, Any Currency, Quel Esprit, Sizing Australia, Shalimar Fromentro, each way Duers (currently best priced at 33/1); 4.40 Guitar Pete, if absent Tiger Roll, then Lindenhurst, Plinth, Rutherglen, Pearl Castle, each way Orgilgo Bay (currently best priced at 33/1) 5.15 Vigil, if absent Modus then Killulta Vic, Golantilla, Princely Conn, Value at Risk, Definitly Red, Western Way, Black Hercules, each way Flying Eagle (currently best priced at 40/1).

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14

ROVERS DON’T LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE A fine warm, sunny day dawned at Bournemouth as Rovers prepared to face their promotion companions of last season. Rovers made two changes from last week, with Tamas replacing Quinn and Furman coming in for the injured Duffy. The home team got the game underway and spent the early minutes in the Rovers half culminating in Arter, in the 4th minute, crossing from the left for Kermorgant, about 12 yards out, getting in a header but straight at Johnstone, who saved comfortably. Bournemouth continued to press but in the 11th minute Rovers attacked down their right and following a throw in the ball was laid back to Furman, who hit a twenty five yarder well wide of the far post. On the quarter hour, Fraser cut in from the left, got the luck of the rebound when tackled and hit a fierce drive from an angle that Johnstone blocked at the near post at the expense of a corner. Five minutes later and Fraser was played in on goal but Khumalo chased him down and blocked the shot for another corner to the home team, which came out to Harte, on the edge of the area. Hrifled in a terrific shot that Johnstone brilliantly tipped over the bar. Bournemouth were having the better of the play and, following a free kick, Kermorgant, at the far post headed back to the middle for Ritchie to hammer in a shot that cannoned off a defender for a corner. In the 26th minute the home team took the lead when KERMORGANT received the ball in the Rovers

penalty area about ten yards to the right of goal and fired low into the net at the far post. Bournemouth were faster on the ball and, bossing the midfield, were constantly feeding their forwards. In the 39th minute, Husband, on the Rovers left, crossed for Furman, who put wide of the far post. Three minutes later and Fraser had only Johnstone to beat from 15yards but the keeper parried the ball out for a corner. The home side increased their score in the 44th minute when Rovers failed to clear the ball on their left flank. Francis was able to collect the ball and cross to the middle where KERMORGANT headed in from close range. Immediately following the restart a long ball out of the home defence for Grabban to chase down led to him getting the better of Khumalo but his effort on goal was pushed out for a corner by Johnstone. Rovers made a double substitution at half time, with Robinson and Cotterill replacing Bowery and Furman. The first five minutes were evenly contested, then out of the blue, Bournemouth added a third goal in the 50th minute when ARTER received just outside the penalty area and rifled in a low shot just inside the post. Rovers were showing more attacking intentions this half and were having a fair portion of the play without getting any clear sight of goal. Then, in the 73rd minute, Francis on the right again got the rub of the green to get in a cross for KERMOGANT to head in his hat-trick goal. Minutes later a high cross from Tamas into the home six-yard box and a misunderstanding between Camp and his defenders let Cotterill head for goal but Camp saved. In the 80th minute, a good build-up by Rovers ended with Coppinger firing over from 25yards. Two minutes later however, following a corner, ARTER shot in from the edge of the penalty area to make it five for Bournemouth. It could have been more as the home team continued to attack, with Ritchie shooting over the bar and Rantie hitting a shot wide.

SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his sides 5-0 defeat at AFC Bournemouth. “The performance was unacceptable, the players know that, I had them in the changing room for a length of time and a few home truths were told. “We’ve got thirteen games left and they are thirteen massive games for us now. “The one positive of today, if any, was that the results have gone for us today. “Days like today as a manager, the players know I won’t accept and I apologise to the fans who have come down because they have travelled a long way to see a performance as inept as that. “The most disappointing thing is that we felt coming here today that we had a really good chance. “In some games you can afford two or three players not completely at it, but when you get ten, having an off day, you are going to get punished, especially in this division.”

BEST PRACTISE WITH PFA Doncaster Rovers player visits in the community have been highlighted as an example of best practice by the Professional Footballers Association. The PFA have praised Rovers commitment to player engagement across the Borough and have used Rovers as an example of best practice in their annual review. “I would like to congratulate all at Rovers for what they are doing in this field, not least Paul Dickov, the management team and the players who are clearly committed to working within their communities.” Gavin Baldwin, Chief Executive of Doncaster Rovers FC, commented: “It is a real accolade for our player visits to be recognised by the PFA as an example of best practice. “Our players work hard and are excellent ambassadors for the club and I know they enjoy their visits across the communities in Doncaster. “Fan and community engagement is a priority at DRFC and I would like to congratulate and thank everyone who works hard delivering this key club initiative.”

County Senior League It was a very busy weekend in the County Senior League with 24 fixtures taking place on Saturday across all four divisions.

Steve Evans talks to the press following the 6-0 victory over Notts County... Rotherham United manager Steve Evans expressed his delight after his Millers side produced a scintillating ensuring a 6-0 hammering of lowly Notts County. The Millers found themselves 4-0 in front before the half hour mark after goals from James Tavernier, Haris Vuckic, Alex Revell and a Kieran Agard penalty, whilst in the second half Vuckic added his second before sub Tom Hitchcock put the icing on the cake with the Millers sixth. After the game boss Evans was full of praise for his side who moved 14 points clear of seventh position in the League One standings. “We weren’t happy with the first 15 minutes in which we looked like we were a bit tired from our exerts at Preston, and Notts County were perhaps on the front foot,” said Evans. “They’ve got some talented players like we’ve always said, but James Tavernier practices free-kicks to the point that I’ve boarded up my windows at the training ground. He’s put it in the top bag and we’ve never really looked back from there. “We said if we could get on the front foot that the first goal would be all important and once we got that goal I genuinely thought we stepped it up and we’ve had as good an afternoon as you could have hoped for. “We could have had double figures today with some of the super play and chances we’ve had but I think the goalkeeper can take great credit for his performance because I can certainly recall two or three great saves.” Evans was forced into two changes with both Claude Davis and Wes Thomas missing out and the Millers boss explained their absence from the starting 11. “I think we showed today that we’ve got a squad here and not just a group of individuals,” he added. “Claude Davis rolled his ankle in training, so it gave our captain the opportunity to come back and get some game time. Wes Thomas was struggling a little bit with his thigh but should be fine for Tuesday and that gave an opportunity for Haris to come in and he’s got two goals.”

Premier Division League leaders Oughtibridge WMFC were in action in the league for the first time since January against Swinton Athletic. They showed no signs of rustiness, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Jack Ridge and Matthew Spencer. Handsworth are chasing Oughtibridge hard though. They were at home to Wombwell on Saturday, and burst into a 3-0 lead after little more than an half an hour. Their explosive start was halted though, and they ended the game with a 3-1 win, after a Ryan Hallsworth converted a penalty as a consolation for Wombwell. Handsworth are 13 points off the lead with six games in hand. Penistone Church’s hopes of launching a charge at the title were put in doubt, following a 1-0 home loss to Houghton Main. Scott James scored the winning goal for Houghton Main, who have won their last three league games. Swallownest Miners Welfare bounced back from last weeks’ heavy defeat to Houghton Main, with a 3-1 away win over over an improving Ecclesfield Red Rose. Millmoor Juniors avenged a 4-1 loss to Athersley Recreation Reserves back in November, by beating them 1-0 at Grange Park on Saturday. Daniel Payne scored the vital goal for Millmoor which helps them consolidate their mid-table position. Robert Ward scored twice to inspire Frecheville to a thrilling 4-3 away win over Everest at Holme Lea Sports Ground. The win is Frecheville’s first since late November. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves heaped more woe on struggling High Green Villa, beating them 6-0 at the Look Local Stadium. High Green remain bottom-of-the-table, and this loss ends their run of three games without defeat. Division One The top two met at Chaucer School, with second placed Jubilee Sports hosting league leaders Joker FC. The Joker took all three points in the end, with a convincing 3-0 win, which takes them eight points clear of their rivals (who do have two games spare). Silkstone United took advantage of Jubilee’s slip to climb within two points off them. They were 2-1 winners at home against Sheffield Athletic, with goals from Jamie Dixon and Ross Levesley. Carl Marriott, Kyle Benton and Rich Williams were all on the score-sheet for Rotherham United as they beat South Kirkby Colliery at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre. Thorpe Hesley put six points between themselves and second-bottom Sheffield Bankers, by edging them out 2-1 at Rockingham Community Centre. Hallam Reserves were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Penistone Church Reserves. Hallam are now five games without a win in the league. Scott Hartley scored twice to help Millmoor Juniors Reserves to their third consecutive league win. Millmoor were 3-2 winners away against Davy FC. Division Two All the top three in Division Two had big wins on Saturday. Firstly, Jordan Lodge scored an hat-trick for North Gawber Colliery, as they beat Maltby Main Reserves 7-1 at Muglet Lane. Kingstone United are four points back (with two games spare), after they registered a 5-1 away win over Bramley Sunnyside. AFC Dronfield make up the top three following a 6-0 home win over Sheffield Lane Top. They remain nine points shy of the lead, and have played three games more. Bawtry Town slipped to four place, after they fell to a 4-2 home loss to Boynton Sports. Josh Gibson starred for Boynton scoring three times. Frecheville Reserves recorded their first league win since October last week, with a 1-0 win over Kiveton Park. Well, they built on that this week, with a 5-3 home win over New Bohemians. The win lifts Frecheville off the foot-of-the-table, as Kiveton Park could only manage a 1-1 away against midtable Sheffield FC Reserves. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves made it three wins from their last four games, with a narrow 1-0 win over Caribbean Sports at Park Road. 20 year old Sam Joyce scored the winner for Worsbrough. U21 Division Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 suffered a second consecutive league loss, and only their third this season, as they were beaten 3-0 by third place Treeton Terriers U21. North Gawber Colliery U21 were able to cut Swallownest’s lead, with a 4-2 home win over Swinton Athletic U21. North Gawber still trail the leaders by six points, but have two games in hand. North Gawber host Swallownest on March 29th. Sam Smith scored twice for Houghton Main U21 in their 5-1 win over Millmoor Juniors U21 at Middlecliffe Lane. Bawtry Town U21 ended a run of six straight league defeats, by beating Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21 5-4 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 NUHIO MAKES BORO PAY WITH PENALTY SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday were back to winning ways at Hillsborough on Saturday, with Atdhe Nuhiu’s penalty settling the clash with ten-man Middlesbrough. The game looked to be heading to a goalless draw but five minutes from time, Leon Best’s strike was handled on the line by Dean Whitehead, who received a straight red card. Nuhiu took responsibility from 12 yards and thumped his penalty home leaving Boro with little time to respond. The visitors went into the clash on the back of a six-game winless run and without having hit the target during that period – with the S6 meeting extending that barren spell to an alarming seven. The early signs were good for Wednesday, with Stuart Gray’s side enjoying plenty of possession and pressing Boro, albeit without creating anything clear cut. Wednesday, though, were fortunate not to go a goal behind after ten minutes. Jacob Butterfield’s pot shot from distance struck both posts and rolled along the goal line, before Chris Kirkland gathered with the visitors adamant the ball had crossed the line. Then on the half hour mark, Wednesday went close after a swift move upfield, which saw Liam Palmer receive possession after overlapping down the

right and feed for Best, who stabbed agonisingly wide. Wednesday edged the early throes of the second half as Chris Maguire fired an early warning shot over the crossbar from a free kick. The attacking emphasis was certainly with Wednesday and Chelsea loanee Sam Hutchinson almost broke the deadlock from distance on 56 minutes but Tomas Mejias made a stunning save to pluck the ball from the top corner. Middlesbrough remained a threat on the counter and had a golden chance to break their goalscoring drought minutes later. Danny Graham sprung the offside trap and charged towards goal but Kirkland made a fine stop in the one-on-one situation and was up off the deck quickly to save from Kei Kamara on the rebound. As the clock ticked down, Wednesday continued to pile the pressure on Boro with substitute Jermaine Johnson and Caolan Lavery both looking lively in the final third.

Mejias did well to make a point blank save from Giles Coke’s volley before the pressure finally paid off in the 85th minute and the Owls were awarded a penalty. Following a goalmouth scramble, Best’s strike was adjudged to have been cleared off the line by the arm of Whitehead, who saw red for his troubles, and Nuhiu obliged from 12 yards, striking home from the spot. There was little time left for Middlesbrough to respond as their miserable run in front of goal extended to seven games, with Wednesday on the other hand moving 12 points clear of danger. Owls: Kirkland, Palmer, Loovens, Onyewu, Mattock (Helan 42), Maguire (Nuhiu 71), Hutchinson, Maghoma (J Johnson 62), Coke, Lavery, Best Middlesbrough: Mejias, Friend, Butterfield (Main 75), Varga, Graham, Whitehead, Chalobah, Omeruo, Adomah (Ledesma 58), Kamara, Woodgate (Gibson 46)

Stuart Gray says the Owls were good value for their 1-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday. A late penalty from Atdhe Nuhiu was sufficient to give Wednesday a 12-point buffer from the drop zone in a game tinged with controversy. The visitors were certain Danny Butterfield’s first half effort crossed the line after hitting both posts before the Owls’ claims for a penalty were waved away when Sam Hutchinson was flattened in the box. Then it was the referee’s assistant who signalled a spot-kick on 86 minutes when Dean Whitehead handled a Leon Best shot on the line. The Boro man also received his marching orders. Gray said: “I thought we deserved to win the game overall and came back well from what was a disappointing defeat on Monday night. “We are talking about controversial moments again and I’m sure we would benefit from goal line technology filtering down from the Premier League into the Football League. “It looked very close from where we were in the technical area but unless the referee is sure he cannot give it. “It’s rather bizarre because we are talking about the same thing that happened on Monday night against Charlton. “But until the technology comes into our league, we will continue to get these controversial moments.” On the Owls’ penalty incidents, Gray said: “I thought the first one was stonewall if I’m being honest but you have to get on with it. “The linesman gave the one that we did get and credit to him for that. They are there to assist the referee and that’s what he did. “Credit too to Atdhe, he hasn’t had the best of times in front of goal recently and I had taken Chris Maguire off, and he is my penalty taker. “But Atdhe struck it well under pressure, he hit the spot and you can’t ask for anything more than that.” Gray also issued updates from the injury bay, with a string of players occupying the treatment table. He added: “Joe Mattock came off with a thigh strain but Reda Johnson is back training with the squad and he will come into contention for Yeovil next week. “Lewis Buxton played for the Development Squad in midweek but had a reaction to a hamstring so we will keep an eye on that. “Michail Antonio is weeks away rather than days and Kieran Lee is still in the treatment room.”

BLADES MAKE IT SEVEN MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

The stats are adding up and it is making interesting reading for Blades fans. Thanks to Stefan Scougall’s goal at MK Dons, that makes it seven wins on the bounce, four successive clean sheets and three 1-0 away wins on the spin. Scougall’s goal at stadium:mk capped yet another magnificent professional display by Nigel Clou gh’s Blades. Clough made two changes, including one enforced. Maguire did not recover from the knee injury he sustained at Colchester and was replaced in central defence by Hill. Additionally, Flynn took over from Davies, who dropped to the bench and was joined by 16-year-old first year apprentice Reed. There was not a lot to excite either set of supporters in the opening 15 minutes, half-chances were all either side could muster. Chadwick failed to get on Powell’s cross for the home side, whilst Baxter shot at the Dons goalkeeper and Murphy’s effort, after cutting in from the left, was deflected wide. There was also a deflection on Lewington’s shot, which resulted in a corner, from which a spell of pinball ended with Hill preventing McLeod getting in a shot at goal. The Blades were hampered on 17 minutes when Brayford limped off, his place taken by Davies, who filled the right-back slot, but soon after the visitors were on the attack. Flynn’s low cross was turned just wide by Scougall at the near post but the latter was more clinical a moment later. This time a through ball from Coady, after linking up with Baxter, saw

the diminutive SCOUGALL scoot around three white shirts before sliding the ball in off the goalkeeper’s right post. The goal stemmed the noise from the home fans and despite United looking the more likely to score next, progress was again hindered by injury. Harris recovered from a knock but Murphy was forced to hobble off before the break and Porter took over, with Baxter moving out to the left. Due to the substitution, a total of three minutes of added time was announced and the Blades were forced to defend three late corners to protect the slender lead. The Blades began the second half well and came close to adding to the lead. Following a low cross from the left, Baxter’s first effort was blocked and the second beat goalkeeper Martin but was kicked away by Spence, whilst a Doyle shot from the edge of the box was wide. Dons boss Robinson was clearly not happy with his side’s performance as he made a triple change on 52 minutes, including former Blades loanee Hall. Davies blocked an effort from one of the home subs, Odelusi, and Howard held a header from Kay from the resulting corner. Davies curled a free-kick just wide following Hall’s foul on Scougall but the Dons hit back with a spell of pressure, in doing so opening the game up. Baldock’s

shot was saved despite a deflection and Alli fired over from distance. On 70 minutes, from Coady’s through ball, Baxter had a good chance to double the lead but his shot was saved by the legs of goalkeeper Martin and at the other end Odelusi was causing a couple of problems, although Howard and Harris prevented him from levelling the scores. The Dons sub also headed wide a Lewington cross on 78 minutes. Odelusi had become the home side’s biggest threat and as the last ten minutes approached he headed wide once more. The Dons, however, were committing players forward and Baxter used the space to fire at goal on 81 minutes before injury forced Clough to use his final change - Kennedy replacing goalscorer Scougall. Academy graduate defender Kennedy went in to re-enforce the back line as the pressure from the home side continued. Plenty of crosses were peppering United’s box and from Lewington’s centre a header from Odelusi was this time on target but straight at Howard. Four minutes of added time was announced as the Blades attempted to hold on. Baxter was booked, despite appearing to get the ball, whilst the home side’s final chance was messed up when McLeod and Baldock got in each other’s way from Alli’s cross.

CLOUGH FULL OF PRAISE MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough heaped praise on his players following United’s seventh successive win in all competitions at MK Dons on Saturday. Speaking after Stefan Scougall’s decisive first-half strike at stadium:mk, the Blades boss was keen to put into perspective just what has been acheived in such a short space of time, with United now sitting 12th in League One on 41 points. The Gaffer said: “We said after the win at Gillingham that was our best win of the season, well this surpassed it given the circumstances and the quality of the opposition. “Considering everything we have had to put in during recent matches and to still produce such a performance in staggering really. “We thought we could have nicked a goal at the start of the second-half too, because for 20 minutes after half-time we were brilliant.” Clough continued to praise his troops, adding: “That was above and beyond in terms of graft and determination, especially on such an energy sapping surface, to win 1-0 and notch a seven consecutive victory in all competitions is incredible. “The spirit and belief that is running through the team at the minute is fantastic. The defeat at Crewe was us hitting rock bottom, since then we have been exceptional and to keep six clean sheets in the process is also remarkable. “We have thoroughly deserved to win every one of the last seven matches and we are nearly there in terms of survival, but we won’t let our confidence turn into complacency.”
