RE-UPHOLSTERY
SHIRECLIFFE FUNDRAISING HERO TOPS £100K A woman who founded a charity shop after her husband died of cancer has raised a staggering £100,000 for the specialist hospital that cared for him. Valarie Jones (75) manages the Friends of Weston Park Hospital ‘Shirecliffe charity shop’ on Teynham Road, which she set up in support of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in 2005, following the death of her husband of 43 years, Gordon. Val said: “Gordon died in 2001 from a very rare cancer of the appendix. They thought he had a cyst on his bowel but his appendix burst so he had an immediate operation
to clean it up and the cancer was discovered. “He also ended up having to have three quarters of his bowel removed as the cancer had spread. Gordon had treatment at Weston Park Hospital but unfortunately he was given a terminal diagnosis and died 18 months after his surgery. “It was a very distressing time and I tried to keep myself busy. We had a caravan in Skegness that Gordon and I loved going to, but it just wasn’t the same by myself. “So by 2005 I was looking for a hobby and something useful to do with my time and keep
me going. Gordon was a butcher and owned the business premises below the flat we lived in, so I decided to open a charity shop and start raising money. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity seemed to be the perfect fit.” The shop, which has a team of seven volunteers, relies on donations of stock from the locally community, and has a regular flow of customers looking for bargains. Adds Val, who has two children: “When I first opened I thought we would only have a few customers and I was looking forward to being able to sit down and
read – nine years on and I haven’t read a book yet because we are so busy! “There is always so much to do, and I could not do it without the great team of people who volunteer their time. They are a lovely bunch and it also helps give them a purpose - there is a real social side to what we do. “We get some really interesting folk coming in, all with a story to tell! Sometimes I feel like an agony aunt but I enjoy getting to know people and we provide somewhere for people to come. “No one gets paid here so, apart from overheads, all proceeds go directly
to the charity and I think that people round here appreciate that. “We try to keep prices low so it is affordable for the local community and so we can attract customers from outside the area. It seems to have worked as we get people coming from all over Sheffield now and a lot of people say to me that we would be really missed if we weren’t here. Throughout 2014, the Cancer Charity is marking its 20th anniversary. To find out more about how you can support the Cancer Charity during its 20th year visit www. wphcancercharity.org.uk

Copley’s Column
Not since the sensational murder trial of American football legend O.J.Simpson has the media of the world been totally gripped by the current trial of ‘blade runner’ Oscar Pistorius and yet the two are intrinsically linked by the fact that both involved women close to them. It was a massive shock when the jury in the Simpson trial quickly returned a not guilty verdict against all the odds. It is my personal belief that a completely unrelated incident, the video of six Los Angeles police officers dragging Rodney King out of his vehicle and beating him with riot sticks being in the public arena, and the subsequent acquittal of all concerned resulted in the Simpson verdict. This I believe was a revenge verdict in protest at such disgusting violation of a man’s human rights. However, Pretorious has no such incident to come to his rescue and the evidence against him would appear to be overwhelming. His defence that he thought that it was a burglar in the bathroom does not hold water with me. Any right minded person, if this were to be believed, would firstly check his girlfriend was alright before taking action against a possible intruder. The prosecution has over a hundred witnesses and the trial is expected to last for months. The judicial system in South Africa is different to ours in that there is no jury, and his fate will be decided by a single judge. An official report by barrister Mark Ellison Q.C. into the Stephen Lawrence case was released this week and is a damning indictment of the Metropolitan Police. The findings, which Home Secretary Theresa May described as ‘profoundly shocking’ found allegations of police corruption, a police cover-up and spying on the bereaved Lawrence family since Stephen’s murder. Also revealed in the report was that undercover police operations over many years may have led to a multitude of wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice. Stephen’s mother, Doreen, now Baroness Lawrence, was reduced to tears as she spoke in the House of Lords how her family have struggled to deal with the situation for the past twenty one years, and called for the resignation of those concerned.
The report states that a detective on the original murder investigation, named as John Davidson acted corruptly, and that documents relating to corruption in the initial enquiry were shredded in 2003. A further public enquiry, led by a judge is to take place. Public confidence in the Metropolitan Police force is now at an all-time low, and those responsible for serious wrongdoings within the organisation mst be severely dealt with. Back on the local scene, Sheffield United have reached the semi- finals of the F.A.Cup and should be congratulated. Their opponents in the next round are Hull City, a winnable game, and with Wigan knocking out favourites Manchester City, Blades fans must be thinking that a fairytale ending could be possible.

THE WANTED!
One of the globe’s best loved boy bands, The Wanted, last year announced details of their biggest tour to date, the Word Of Mouth World Tour 2014. Special guests The Vamps will provide support! Having already played to a combined audience of over 1 million people worldwide, The Wanted will be significantly adding to that figure with a multitude of shows across Europe, the UK, Canada and the US, with more to be announced across the world. The Word Of Mouth World Tour will stop off at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield Next Friday on the 21st March 2014. Tickets purchased online and through the ticket hotline are priced £27.50 - £49.50 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £26.25 - £47.25 including booking fee. Embarking on their most substantial tour yet, Max George said, “We can’t wait to get back on the road, for what is our biggest tour so far. One of the best things about being in a band is performing live in front of the fans, and to do that across the world has always been our dream. Every night is going to be one long party!” No stranger to massive live shows, The Wanted have already performed on some of the world’s most iconic stages, including London’s Wembley Stadium and O2 Arena, not to mention New York’s Madison Square Garden and the White House! Support for the show comes from 18 year old West London resident Elyar Fox. Dubbed “the perfect pop package” by teen press and mentioned in the same comparative breath as Conor Maynard, One Direction’s Niall Horan and global phenomenon Justin Bieber, it seems like Fox was always destined to be a popstar. Discovered on YouTube when he was just 16, he became an overnight internet sensation after his cover of ‘Boyfriend’ by Justin Bieber was tweeted by Ryan Seacrest - resulting in four million hits. After supporting Union J on their winter tour, Elyar released his debut single ‘Do It All Over Again’ via RCA Records in January, storming straight into the top 5. His new single ‘A Billion Girls’, is set for a 14th April release with his much anticipated debut album following in the summer. Tickets for The Wanted’s Sheffield date are available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
Midwife For Sale: Will deliver. I went down to my local supermarket and I said: “I want to make a complaint. This vinegar’s got lumps in it”. He said: “Those are pickled onions sir.” I was having dinner with Garry Kasparov (world chess champion) and there was a check tablecloth. It took him two hours to pass me the salt. I always wanted to be a human cannonball, but the circus said they wanted a man of an entirely different calibre! I bought a trampoline but there’s absolutely no bounciness to it. Plus the legs are on the wrong way round. I couldn’t believe it when I looked through the dictionary today. It turns out chicken comes first. Who are the coolest blokes at the hospital? The ultra-sound guys! Seventy-year-old George went for his annual check-up. He told the doctor that he felt fine, but often had to go to the bathroom during the night. Then he said: “But you know Doc, I’m blessed. God knows my eyesight is going, so he puts on the light when I pee, and turns it off when I’m done!” A little later in the day, Dr. Smith called George’s wife and said: “Your husband’s test results were fine, but he said something strange that has been bugging me. He claims that God turns the light on and off for him when uses the bathroom at night.” Thelma exclaimed: “That old fool! He’s been peeing in the refrigerator again!” Two cows standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly: “I was artificially inseminated this morning.” “I don’t believe you,” replies Dolly. “It’s true, no bull!” Breaking news: Man lucky to be alive after being hit by train. I think I’m luckier to be honest, I’ve never been hit by a train. My wife threatened to leave me today because apparently I’m a smart arse. She said, “We’re at a crossroads in our relationship, one way is love and trust, the other is a divorce.’’ I said, “I think you’ll find that’s called a T-junction.’’

YORKSHIRE WATER BLIND MAKE FRESH PLEA ON TRAVEL CUTS “Sheffield’s contribution comes to £30,000 to stop cuts to concessionary ISSUES WARNINGS Pleas travel hitting Sheffield’s disabled to £35,000. Why can’t the council find the people have been thrown out by city Yorkshire Water is warning customers to be alert to bogus callers operating in South Yorkshire after company clothing was stolen from a van during a break-in. The van was parked on a Barnsley street when it was broken into. Bosses at the utility company fear criminals could use the clothing to con their way into residents’ homes. A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “The Yorkshire Water items were stolen from a van in South Yorkshire but the fear is that they could be used throughout the region by people pretending to be from the company”. “All genuine Yorkshire Water employees carry identification, and on the very rare occasions the company visits customers’ properties this identification can and should always be verified”. “Genuine callers will have no issue waiting while their credentials are verified”. “To help crack down on the source of bogus callers, the company also has a customer password system. The scheme works by enabling customers to register an agreed personal password with the company, through a simple phone call”. Call the company on 08451 242424.

leaders.
Blind people from across the city led an appeal for the council to step in to save free bus and train travel from the axe as councillors met to formally approve a budget for the next financial year. Under a package of money saving measures from South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority, people with disabilities will no longer be able to travel free on buses before 9.30 am, and a rail pass entitling them to free travel across the region’s services will be withdrawn from April. Changes also affect concessionary travel for pensioners. Campaigners spoke of the threat the move poses to their independence and livelihood – and called for Sheffield Council to come up with the cash to preserve current services. Steve Hambleton, Chairman for the Royal Society for the Blind, said: “I am well aware the decision came from the SYITA – however that body has been put under pressure from local authorities to reduce the levy it takes from the councils”. “The impact of these cuts is going to be a strain on social services”.

money to fund local travel concessions?” Frank Gardener who is completely blind and relies on the help of a guide dog, said: “I am totally blind. I have a job I have to get to before 9.30 am. Using money instead of my pass makes me feel vulnerable and unsafe”. But while the council refused to move on the decision to cut concessions, it did promise to look into making an exception for disabled children to access school. Cllr Leigh Bramall, cabinet member for business, said: “We do accept there are impacts and they are not desirable. Before this we had the most generous scheme outside of London, but we can’t afford to maintain it as it was”. “We cannot afford to keep these local enhancements”.

TO WE’LL MEET AGAIN THANKS SUPPORTERS
The Morrisons Supermarket at Hillsborough Barracks had a very special guest appearance last Thursday, from the lovely Vera Lynn. Well, not quite the lady herself but Lorrie Brown, the UK’s number one tribute artist, who donned her wartime outfit and made an appearance in the lobby. Thanks to Morrisons Lorrie was able to chat to customers and promote her next event at the Garrison Hotel which is this Thursday 13th March from noon until 4pm. Tickets are still available to see this amazing show, which is
introduced by comedian Gary Birtles. Lorrie will take you on a trip down memory lane, you will get a bangers and mash dinner and there is also a couple of games of bingo thrown in for good measure. All this just for £15.00 each and we even set the scene with bunting, and give you your own flag to waive as your trip of nostalgia begins. To book for this award winning tribute act, call our ticket line on 0114 2763633, or call in at the Garrison to book your place.
FROM LOCAL CHARITY
I would like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in our charity bucket collection before Saturday’s football match between Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough at Hillsborough. We had fantastic support from lots of local volunteers, and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of fans of both teams, whose donations raised a massive £967.28. Around 4,313 people living in Sheffield could be struggling to cope with the life changing aftereffects of meningitis – and every year another 78 people in the area could find themselves fighting the impact of the devastating disease. Donations like this will make a real difference to our fight against meningitis – saving lives and rebuilding futures through research, awareness and support. Meningitis Now was formed
in 2013 by bringing together Meningitis UK and Meningitis Trust, founders of the meningitis movement in the UK. As a charity which receives no central Government funding we rely on the fantastic fundraising efforts of our supporters to raise the £10,000 we need each day to provide our lifesaving and lifechanging services. If anyone would like to find out how to get involved with volunteering or fundraising for us, please get in touch by calling me on 0845 120 2123 or emailing ShelaghH@meningitisnow.org. To find out more about meningitis and the work we do, please visit www.meningitisnow.org. Shelagh Hopkinson Community Fundraiser for Yorkshire and East Midlands.

PEOPLE LOOKING FOR CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
I often wonder what are people looking for, or at, when they click onto Club Historians. It was originally set up to collect club stories, memories and experiences, before too many more were lost for good. Putting these memories onto a website meant they could be readily shared across the world via the internet. We expected interest from club goers past and present in the UK but it’s fascinating to see how, since the site started operating in 2008, we’ve gone global. Clicking onto our site statistics and map of visitors once a week reveals to me a lot of interesting things about how our audiences are using it and what they are looking for. There are regular hits from many countries, though the majority are UK based, usually around 90%, but others are pretty far flung. There is always around 3-4% from the US and Canada with Australia and India featuring strongly. Some weeks we see searches in Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, China and many other countries. There is always a strong interest from viewers about CIU rules and regulations, including how committees should work and what job descriptions should be. They seem to have need for clarification about how private members clubs should be run and who dictates the processes. These viewers probably should be looking at the CIU website for this type of information. They will find a page about the CIU on Club Historians and a link to their website, but as we are not are part of the CIU, we can’t provide official information. Perhaps our readers just come across our site first. There is a lot of interest in what clubs are online, club entertainment and specific entertainers such as Carlo Santanna. Plus, not surprisingly, there is a big interest in the individual clubs that are featured in our Club Fact File section. There are 37 stories there- just a drop in the ocean compared to the thousands of clubs that used to exist: but they are indicative of many up and down the country. These club stories are regularly viewed - from the Dial House in Sheffield (now a block of flats), to Doncaster Trades -still very much alive, to the Bradpole in rural Dorset. Other clubs are, unfortunately, featured in the Obituary section. The information is for all to access freely and if it provides a link with home and the past for some ex-pats as well as UK residents, then that is all good.

SHEFFIELD IN RETROSPECT Sheffield has long been home to one of the country’s most vibrant music scenes and named by Q Magazine as one of the city’s top 5 bands to watch, The Retrospectives are now at the forefront. They return home to our fair city on the 27th of March when they appear at The Greystones up Ecclesall way. From the British invasion bands of the 60's to the punk and new wave of the 70's, The Retrospectives were raised on the music of their parents. Inspired by the likes of Elvis Costello, The Rolling Stones and Tom Petty, this energetic three-piece have spent the last two years touring relentlessly, driven by a belief that guitars still have a vital place in popular music. Following the addition of Paul Jackson on drums, 2013 was their biggest year to date. The release of their new EP 'Turn Me Up' saw them take to the
stage supporting The Boomtown Rats, Night Engine and Paper Aeroplanes, as well as opening for Bruce Foxton's 'From The Jam' at a sold out show at the famous Cavern Club In Liverpool. Described by Stereoboard as 'Songwriters with an ability to combine lyrics and melody with rare precision' and having landed themselves a place in BBC Introducing Sheffield's top ten tracks of the year, it's clear their hook-laden, off-kilter, power-pop is starting to turn heads in the right places. After kicking off the new year with another 'From The Jam' support slot (this time at ABC in Glasgow), The Retrospectives are gearing up to make a massive impact in 2014 and with a single release, headline tour and a support slot with The Buzzcocks already in place, it's set to be an exciting year.
CHIODOS INTERVIEW
think is right in the moment so I’m going to stand by it,” Craig reveals. “I think the writing and recording process of the album went well considering… they did a record without me, I wrote a record without them then we came together and I think it actually went really considering what it was that we experienced in the first place and the experiences we had which caused the separation to begin.” Sharing his co-partners stark revelations, Bradley agrees. “It’s never as smooth as butter or anything but one thing we had to our advantage was that we had time on our side this time. So that helped a lot and made it a lot smoother and a little less stressful. It’s always natural that you disagree but we also had great moments aswell, it’s a roller coaster for me personally.” If we’ve learnt absolutely anything from the history of Chiodos, it is to feel secure in an environment which we personally hold closest to our hearts. Whether it be at school, hanging out with friends or simply sitting in your room listening to your favourite tracks, in order for happiness to be achieved, a personal sense of peace and security needs to be established. Craig reflects upon this throughout ‘Devil.’ “There was one point where me and Brad had to stop writing and had to have a sit down conversation before we started vocals in the studio, explaining to each other what was bothering us and why it happened and how we were going to work through these issues. As a result it created a tighter bond whilst I was doing vocals in the studio. Every time you have to work through things with communication it’s difficult at first but the benefits are so plentiful. You can hear it on the record; you can really hear the warmth of coming with being comfortable in our atmosphere.” So what’s next for Chiodos and more importantly, when are we going to get the chance to see them live again? One word answer…soon. Very soon. Having already embarked on a mammoth US tour which will take the six piece into mid-May (“I’m kind of a wardrobe guy! Some people can tour with 3 pairs of jeans but I can’t do that because you sweat every night and you can’t always do laundry”) although nothing has been officially announced yet, expect to get a healthy fix of Chiodos throughout this year. “We’re doing festivals in May, June and July which we haven’t announced yet and we’re going to be doing a proper headliner and hopefully a support slot. The headliner may not be until early next year but if we don’t get the support that we’re looking for, we’ll come over and do a headline because we’re not gonna not! So four or five times this year at least. It’s so exciting!” Craig Owen is a prime example of not being afraid of the dark. With the rough comes the smooth, the nights come the days, wherever you may be, the sun always shines above the haze. Remember…“It is better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all...” ‘Devil’ is released on 31st March 2014 through Razor & Tie
by KT Evans
‘You only regret what you didn’t do…’ Drawing on his rollercoaster ride of life experiences, it seems Craig Owens, Chiodos frontman and returning vocalist lives by this mantra. Feeling both pride and gratitude for taking the poignant steps of retuning back to Chiodos for the release of their 4th Studio album ‘Devil,’ the personal discovery of their reunion speaks volumes for their upcoming record. We caught up with Craig and pianist Bradley Bell to unpick the threads… “When I write music I try to be as vulnerable as possible and I would be lying if I said I didn’t have my guard up when I came back into the situation, as I think the guys did for me,” Craig Owen reveals, a gent so pent up with emotion it seeps from every pore on his tattooed skin. “I still think we’re breaking those walls down, which is going to be an ever going process.” Before we thrust ourselves into the heart and soul of Chiodos, let us first take you on a journey of exploration to the history of the band. Beginning their musical career over a decade ago, the six piece from Michigan have gone on to reach international highs with three belting studio albums along with headline festival slots across continents. Having taken a holiday away from the epicentre of hardcore after album number three ‘Illuminaudio’ in 2010, the brotherhood return with their massively anticipated new record ‘Devil,’ set for release on 31st March 2014. As with every tight-knit band of musicians however, each and every member came up with dangerous torment…and by that we mean the official line-up. Parting ways with Chiodos in 2009, Craig Owens gave birth to D.R.U.G.S in 2010 whilst Chiodos went onto record their third release, but moving on four years and we have what we all fondly know as…the reunited Chiodos. Craig sets it straight: “It’s crazy because I’ve never been part of a band reunion. I didn’t even realise the misconception that I am guilty of as a fan sometimes that all of a sudden they’re apart and then when they get back together everything is all roses. It’s not roses and rainbows for us.” “Writing is a vulnerable thing and you really have to trust the people that you’re doing it with in order to let down those guards. It took a lot,” pianist and backing vocalist Bradley Bell explains. “We really had to repair our relationships and establish communication again in order for this to balance.” With emotions at their peak and relationships still teetering on a knife edge, Chiodos have done the extraordinary and channelled this into their upcoming new album ‘Devil.’ Every bit as passionate and emotive as you would have anticipated, the record is a diary of the last four turbulent years. Track ‘I’m Awkward & Unusual” is as blunt as it is startlingly honest, whilst “Ole Fishlips Is Dead Now” reverts to an updated yet still ‘classic’ sounding Chiodos. “Our gut has got us to where we are, chasing that gut reaction and what we

angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
It’s that time of year of year again; that time when a misguided and foolish minority tell us that they won’t be buying one as they have never been caught yet, or when others tell us they won’t be partaking as a ‘protest vote’...... yup, rod licences are due! In my eyes, the Environment Agency come in for an unprecedented amount of misinformed and unfair abuse as a result of actions by others, budget cuts and all manner of other reasons why they are not visibly seen to do the job anglers think they should be doing. It’s isn’t all about checking your rod licence, or removing and prosecuting those who take fish from our rivers for food without permission, there is far more to the job of EA staff than that, but many anglers just don’t seem to realise it..... Before I go any further with this week’s blog, I’d like to say there are some things I disagree with about the work of the Agency, and in some instances, I think decisions could be made with more speed, but by and large, I support the work that they do and I think you should too.... Flooding has been a prevalent issue recently, never more so than to the residents in Somerset and such areas, but is it all the fault of the EA as told by Mr. Pickles? It’s not all about dredging the local river (and destroying an eco-system which may take decades to recover) as adding a couple of feet of depth to the channel will still only allow so much water to pass; have you seen how many billions of gallons of water were in the fields and surrounding areas? I’m fairly certain that dredging wouldn’t accommodate that much! A lot of blame must perhaps go towards local authorities who have cut budgets which allow such things as street cleaning; a blocked drain on a roadway and the water has to go somewhere else....two or three drains blocked by leaves or similar, then we really start to have problems as it flows into properties and such like. Provision must be made for property protection, but it’s all about risk/benefit; if the authority think they can get away with it, then they will try.... How about planning committees who allow residential development on flood plain land? Surely they have a responsibility too? After flooding comes pollution. If your day ticket or club water suffers an incident of pollution, who do you call? (It certainly isn’t Ghostbusters!) The EA attend at the earliest possible moment to facilitate intervention, whether it is to put in place physical barriers or decontamination and they work well in partnership with Fire Services and others throughout the UK. How about stock replenishment? A fish kill can be devastating after pollution, and whilst the EA may not replace your 30lb carp, they try and make some effort to replace fish lost. It’s the same in summer when oxygen levels plummet, the EA will utilise all available resources to restore the equilibrium to protect your fish and your fishery....there is much good work done by the EA, and with limited space, my words can only cover a tiny part of it.... So, back to your rod licences; I disagree with the call for a three rod licence, and I do agree that as anglers we should contribute to the work the EA does on our behalf. There, I’ve said it and I’ll stick by it. Why? Because budget cuts are affecting the EA just like everywhere else and a reduction in rod licence revenue of 20-30% for every angler who wants to fish three rods would only compound the problem, so if you want to fish three rods, then buy two licences. It works out at just over £1 per week which is peanuts, and don’t give me usual rubbish about living standards. It’s a medium sized bar of chocolate, not even half a pint of beer, and the cost of a third of decent pie and I’m certain we can all afford it if we want to enjoy our fishing. So if you are one of those who speaks out on social media, usually from behind a pseudonym, that you are refusing to buy your licence in ‘protest’, then I don’t believe you. You really should support the work that the EA do on your behalf and if you don’t pay in, you have no voice and aren’t worth listening to. If you really are that daft, and then get caught, the EA can confiscate and sell your kit for profit and you will go to court where a big fine is a possibility.....if that’s your idea of a protest, then be my guest!

racing form by Timelord
After the excitement of Cheltenham things calm down a little at the weekend when there are seven races scheduled to be shown on Channel 4 – four from Uttoxeter and three from Kempton. Unfortunately at the time of writing this two of the Kempton races are not showing entries yet. To complicate things for those that are showing entries there are quite a few horses that hold Cheltenham engagements this week that also have entries for Saturday so check carefully as there are likely to be a few non runners on Saturday. Utoxeter: 2.05 Betfred Fun and Friendly Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 0-115, 2m: Warren Greatrex’s Good of Luck can follow up his win in a quite eventful and competitive race at Warwick on Monday with another victory here, probably at the main expense of Straits of Messina, Little Pop and Daliance. Next best after these may be Polstar and Ossie’s Dancer. 2.40 Betfred Mobile Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 0-140, 3m: Several of these boast good recent form so this may turn out to be a very competitive race. The one that catches my eye however is Tom George’s Ifyousayso who turned in a good time when winning last time out and can go on to land the hat-trick here. The selection may have most to fear from the likes of: Gas Line Boy; Midnight Prayer; No Buts; Knock A Hand; Kris Cross; and Bold Chief.

3.15 Betfred Goals Galore Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 0-135, 2m 4f 110yds: Lucinda Russell’s Saphir River gets a relatively strong vote to score after posting a good time last time out on heavy ground at Haydock when behind Extreme Impact. Next best could be Songsmith followed by Alaivan, Hollow Tree, Dovil’s Date, Irish Buccaneer and Indian Daudaie. 3.50 Betfred Midlands Grand National Chase (Handicap), 5yo+, 4m 1f 110yds: Those that watched Kim Bailey’s Harry Topper scoot home in the Denman Chase over 3 miles at Newbury last time out, when he demolished Al Ferof by a scintillating 25 lengths, could hardly fail to have been impressed. He looks to hold all the right credentials for a National and he would be very firmly on the shortlist but as he is also engaged in Friday’s Cheltenham Gold Cup he is a doubtful starter here. However, I was also very impressed by Summery Justice’s defeat of Burton Port over 3 ¼ miles at the same track. That race was also completed in a very good time for the conditions and the extra distance here should not be a problem. After the above pair my third choice would be Storm Survivor followed next by Rebeccas Choice and then Merlin’s Wish and Son of Flicka. Kempton: 2.20 Betdaq The Sports Betting Exchange Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 0-125, 2m: A chance is taken that Doynosaur could be about to make his mark over the larger obstacles, despite a quite comprehensive beating by Next Sensation last time out. That race was run in a fast time and Next Sensation may well advertise its value this week at Cheltenham. First reserve slot goes to Easily Pleased with Veloce coming next followed by Noche de Reyes, Oscatara and Arkaim.

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14
ROVERS GET THE POINTS IN YORKSHIRE DERBY
It was a fine but windy afternoon for this Yorkshire derby game. The visitors were unchanged from their 5-0 win over Barnsley last week, whilst Rovers made four changes to their side. Out was Khumalo, injured while playing for South Africa in midweek, Coppinger, his wife had gone into labour, Jordan Bowery and Dean Furman. In came Paul Quinn, with Tamas moving to centre half, Mark Duffy, David Cotterill and Billy Sharp. Huddersfield kicked off and won a corner after 40 seconds. Quinn headed out for another corner followed by a third one. Each were successfully defended. Rovers made an occasional foray into the visitors half but Huddersfield were having more of the play and in the tenth minute won a corner that was again well defended. Rovers began to get into the game and minutes later won their first corner but nobody from either side got a touch as it went across the goalmouth and out for a throw in. In the 18th minute a free kick for the Rovers on their right just two yards in from the by-line came out of defence to Duffy just outside the penalty area but he fired wide. Rovers were now well in the game and a cross from the right by Quinn found Sharp 15yards from goal with only Smithies to beat but he shot straight at him and the keeper saved comfortably. In the 28th minute Meite surged forward with the ball and won a corner, which Cotterill placed to the far post for SHARP to head in. Past the half hour and as play evened out the sides exchanged corners but nothing came from them. Husband then took a pass from Cotterill and fired wide from 25yards and a couple of minutes later a good run by Cotterill on the left ended with him shooting wide of the far post from a similar distance.

As the last five minutes came up the visitors began to push on. Hamill on the right put the ball high and wide then Johnstone saved with his feet from a shot by Wells that brought another corner for Huddersfield. Gerrard got a good header to it but Keegan, at the far post, cleared off the line. Play went on but Gerrard accosted Tamas and a general melee ensued, which the assistant had to draw the referee’s attention to. A severe lecture to both players from the referee sufficed. Huddersfield started the second half on the offensive, with Hammill having a shot blocked and Wells blasting in a shot from the left edge of the penalty area that Johnstone could only push out for a corner. Cotterill, for Rovers, cut in from the right by-line and hit a fierce low ball to the middle that a defender put over his own bar for a corner to Rovers. Another corner to Rovers was headed wide by Tamas. In the 55th minute Rovers increased their lead when Brown got down the right, cut in and squared for COTTERILL to slot in from 12yards. The visitors tried to hit back but Rovers were not willing to let things slip and continued to play attacking football but couldn’t add to their total. All Huddersfield’s efforts came up against a resolute Rovers defence and try as they might they couldn’t get through. A hard fought game had Rovers back on the winning trail, with a good three points in the bag. WE WERE FANTASTIC FROM START TO FINISH Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his sides 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town. “I’m delighted, I thought our performance was fantastic from start to finish. “It’s what I expected, I wanted a response and I knew I would get it. “What we have to do now is keep that going because we know within the club we are a good team. “We work hard and have good shape when we press and we have done all of that today. “It is pleasing getting the three points and keeping a clean sheet after conceding five last week. It shows me as a manager that we have a lot of character.”

DEFENDER JOINS STALYBRIDGE Daniel Rowe has joined Conference North outfit Stalybridge Celtic on work experience. The 18-year-old prospect made his Millers first-team bow this season coming on as a substitute in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory over York City at Bootham Crescent. “This is a great opportunity for me to get out and play some games and gain some valuable experience,” said the Stockton born youngster. “Stalybridge are full-time, they are a good club from what I’ve heard so I am sure that this move will be of huge benefit and key for my development. “The move has come at a good time for me but I need to make sure I work hard and train well to firstly get into the side and then keep my place. Hopefully I can help out Stalybridge and if all goes well it should make me a stronger player and person for next season.” Used several times as an unused substitute for the firstteam this season and last, the highly-rated defender will now further his football education with The Celts, who are fighting to preserve their Conference North status.

GREAT CHARACTER; COTTERILL Doncaster Rovers midfielder David Cotterill spoke to Rovers Player after helping his side to a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town. “I think it was on a personal level nice to be back in the team and hopefully I can stay here. “From a team perspective, it was vitally important that we got back to a clean sheet and winning ways. “There was a lot of negativity surrounding the fans and obviously it has not been nice in the camp conceding that many goals. “We’ve gone over a few dvd’s and put a few home truths out. We’ve been digging people out and I think we needed it. “I think the lads showed great character, grit and determination today.”

County Senior League Without trying to avoid cliches the past week as seen the start of the “business end of the season”. This claim is backed up by the weeks’ three semifinals. S&HCFA Association Cup Semi-Finals It was a proud day for us all at the County Senior League on Saturday, with the Semi-Final stage of the Association Cup being made up entirely of County Senior League teams. Probably even more significantly only one of those were from the League’s Premier Division. At Sheerien Park Premier Division side Athersley Recreation Reserves hosted Wickersley of Division One. Wickersley shocked their hosts advancing to the final with a hard-fought win. Jubilee Sports of Division One hosted North Gawber Colliery of Division Two in the other SemiFinal. This time no shock was on the cards, but it was a very even game. Lee Grocock won the game for Jubilee Sports with an outstanding long distance strike, giving Jubilee a 1-0 win. U21 Cup Semi-Final The first U21 Cup Semi-Final took place on Thursday, with North Gawber Colliery U21 taking on Valley Knights U21 at Sheerien Park. North Gawber were comfortable winners in the end, as Tom Nurney brace inspired them to a 6-0 win. Premier Division Second placed Handsworth travelled to the Memorial Ground on Saturday to take on third placed Penistone Church. Penistone were comfortable winners thanks to a double from Mitch Savage. The win takes Penistone above their rivals into second place. They now trail leaders Oughtibridge by 11 points, with a game spare. Goals from Adam Stead, Nicky Harper and Ashley Emmett gave Houghton Main a 3-1 win over Everest FC. The win is Houghton Main’s fourth straight and takes them into fourth place in the table. Swinton Athletic claimed a vital win in their battle against relegation, as they beat fourth placed (previously) Swallownest Miners Welfare 2-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. A Ryan McDonald hat-trick helped Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves to a 3-2 win away against High Green Villa. Stocksbridge have now won four consecutive league games, scoring 16 times in the process. Ecclesfield Red Rose edged-out Millmoor Juniors 2-1 at Grange Park. It is the exact reverse of the same fixture that took place in January. Frecheville were held to a 1-1 draw at home by third-bottom Wombwell Main. Frecheville have only won one fo their last eight league games. Division One League leaders Joker FC extended their unbeaten league run to 10 games, with a 3-1 win over Rotherham Town. Joker lead second placed Jubilee Sports by 11 points, but Jubilee do have three games in hand. Oliver Robinson and Tim Council were both on target, as Penistone Church Reserves defeated Thorncliffe 2-1 at Thorncliffe Playing Fields. The win puts Penistone a point outside second place in third. Hallam Reserves ended a run of five league games without a win, with a 3-2 victory over Silkstone United at Sandygate. Scott Hartley scored a hat-trick to help Millmoor Juniors Reserves to a 3-3 draw away against South Kirkby Colliery. Ted Gaskell, Darren Barrick and Craig Hobson were all on target for South Kirkby. Davy FC ended a run of five consecutive losses with a vital 2-0 away win over Sheffield Athletic. Davy remain at the foot-of-the-table, but are now only three points adrift of Sheffield Bankers. The Bankers were held to a 2-2 draw against third bottom Thorpe Hesley. Thorpe Hesley remain six points ahead of the Bankers, but have played two games more. Division Two It was second versus fourth at Barnsley Sports College, where Kingstone United hosted Bawtry Town. A late Jermaine Green equaliser meant the game ended 3-3. New Bohemians fought back from 2-0 to lead Caribbean Sports 3-2, only to be pegged back 3-3 in a fascinating game at Caribbean Sports Club. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves’ renaissance continued, as they were 2-0 winners away against Boynton Sports. Four wins in their last five league games as seen Worsbrough change their sights from fighting relegation to sitting mid-table. Third placed AFC Dronfield extended their unbeaten run six games, with a 2-1 away win over mid-table Sheffield FC Reserves. Dronfield are six points behind the leaders, but have played four games more. Maltby Main Reserves and Kiveton Park played-out a rare goalless draw at Muglet Lane. The point is enough to take Kiveton off the foot-of-the-table on goal difference, above both Frecheville Reserves and Bramley Sunnyside.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 GLOVERS END OWLS UNBEATEN AWAY RUN SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday’s nine-match unbeaten run away from home came to an end at Yeovil on Saturday. In a relatively even Championship contest, the Somerset side had the game’s outstanding player in Ishmael Miller, who ultimately proved the difference. The big frontman was a handful for the Owls’ defence throughout and proved too hot to handle, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win. For Wednesday, it was a barren afternoon that saw their first defeat out of base since going down to Blackpool way back in November and to compound matters, loanee Sam Hutchinson was sent off late in the game for a second yellow card offence. With the in-form Glovers looking to exit the relegation zone, boss Gary Johnson sent out an attacking team but it was Wednesday that threatened first when Jacques Maghoma stung the palms of Marek Stech from eight yards on the angle. Yeovil responded with Miller forcing Damian Martinez into a similar save before the same player got the better of the Owls’ keeper moments later only to see a linesman’s flag rule out the strike for offside. The visitors were next to show on the half-hour mark when Jeremy Helan
slalomed past two defenders to feed Giles Coke, who got good purchase on the volley but the slightest of deflections was enough to send the ball flying over the crossbar. Yeovil came close to breaking the first half deadlock ten minutes before the break when Duanne Holmes took possession on the edge of the area and drilled in a low shot that Martinez saw late and did well to gather. But the home side went one better and burst into the lead on 41 minutes. Miller showed composure in allowing time to size up a bouncing ball on the right side of the six-yard box before unleashing a ferocious drive that flew past the despairing Martinez. And if that was impressive, Miller promptly raised the bar six minutes into the second half when Yeovil doubled their lead. Little seemed on for the former West Brom hitman when he took a long pass into his stride 20 yards out but Miller advanced a yard and curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner. The Owls made a double substitution in a bid to get back into the game, with
Jermaine Johnson and Atdhe Nuhiu coming on for Chris Maguire and Gary Gardner. But play was soon at the other end and the hosts had a penalty appeal waved away after Hutchinson clashed with Ruben Palazuelos. Yeovil has their tails up and continued to press but they did so in the knowledge that the hard work was already done. The Owls enjoyed more possession in the closing stages but had Hutchinson dismissed with a minute to go, leaving the Glovers to gain a vital victory. Yeovil: Stech, Ayling, McAllister, Edwards, Webster, Palazuelos, Hayter (Morgan 86), Lawrence, Duffy, Holmes (Grant 67), Miller (Dawson 71) Substitutes: Lanzoni, Done, Twumasi, Lundstram Owls: Martinez, Palmer, Loovens, Onyewu, Helan, Maghoma, Coke (Afobe 60), Maguire (Nuhiu 53), Gardner (J Johnson 53) Hutchinson (sent off 89), Best Substitutes: Davies, Buxton, Lllera, Lavery

PRUTTON ON THE COMEBACK TRAIL SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
David Prutton is eager to put his injury troubles behind him and stake a claim in the Owls’ midfield. The 32-year-old has recovered from ankle surgery and featured last week in a Development Squad fixture against Birmingham at Middlewood Road. Prutton has praised first team physios Paul Smith and Dean Taylor for their hard work behind the scenes in ensuring a return to action for the experienced midfielder. He said: “Paul and Dean have kept me going. They know exactly what they are doing treatment-wise. “The rehab has been fun and enjoyable but, by the same token, it’s been hard. “You have to put hard work and effort into the rehab. Paul and Dean know if they give me something to do that I will do it.” After storing 45 minutes for the Under21s on Friday, Prutton is keen to make a speedy return to first team action and added: “It was nice get back out on the pitch again and get some minutes under my belt. “It was a culmination of a lot of hard work. I’ve probably been getting on everyone’s nerves behind the scenes so I’m sure they’re glad I’m out of the treatment room! “You can do as much training as you want, but you can only test your body out by going full tilt in games. “It can be a tad frustrating to sit and watch the team when you would like to be involved but it is just one of those things you have to accept.”

BLADES WEMBLEY BOUND MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
The Blades are through to the semifinals of the FA Cup after yet another giant-killing effort. Two goals in less than two minutes from Ryan Flynn and John Brayford - secured the victory over Charlton Athletic. More than 30,000 were inside the Lane 11 years to the day that the Blades last reached the last four of the world’s most famous club cup competition. Boss Clough made no fewer than seven changes, despite the league victory in midweek. Brayford, Harris, Maguire, Flynn, Baxter, Scougall and Murphy all returned to the starting line-up. New loan signing Freeman was amongst the substitutes. Forced to kick towards the Kop in the first half, the sun was out and Unitedites were in good voice. On the pitch it was tentative from both sides early on with so much at stake. After Flynn helped to force a corner, Collins headed over Baxter’s delivery, whilst Flynn, who picked up the game’s first booking, and Murphy looked threats. From 15 minutes, Charlton, mainly with Jackson’s set-pieces, began get themselves in the fixture. Church scuffed a shot and Harriott’s effort was deflected but straight at Howard. Howard had to be alert to push away a
shot from Tudgay and the goalkeeper recovered to collect the subsequent cross from Church. As half-time approached United got back on top. Jackson was booked for a crude foul on Flynn and on 40 minutes, after Brayford’s shot ricocheted around the box, Coady dispatched the ball into the top of the net but he was adjudged offside. The best opportunity of the half fell to the home side in injury-time. Maguire steamed out of defence before laying off to Murphy and he set Harris to curl an effort just over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area. There were no changes to the personnel at the start of the second period and the first effort was a long-ranger from Scougall, which flew over crossbar. On 52 minutes, Maguire turned and shot into the sidenetting following a corner and Coady just failed to get on the end of a threaded Baxter pass. On 60 minutes, Charlton went too close for comfort. Jackson lifted a free-kick over the defence and Tudgay’s pull-back gave Harriott a golden opportunity, almost an open goal, but he slid the ball wide, much to the amusement of the Kop. Charlton made a change but they were still adapting when the Blades grabbed the lead. A diagonal ball from Baxter sailed over Wood’s head and FLYNN
sneaked in ahead of his marker to delicately poke home. And, just a minute and 44 seconds later, it was 2-0. This time a run from Murphy caused problems and he laid off for BRAYFORD, whose shot took a telling deflection to beat Charlton goalkeeper Hamer. Three sides of Bramall Lane were in wonderland and singing about Wembley. A third almost followed when Brayford pulled back for Flynn, but his shot was blocked and then Murphy turned Morrison inside out before also seeing his shot blocked. As the Blades continued the offensive, Flynn fired over. On 78 minutes, a calamity moment in the Charlton defence saw Scougall’s effort strike a post and Coady convert the rebound - unfortunately, he was adjudged offside for a second time. Baxter was booked for a foul before Davies replaced him and Porter was introduced, replacing Scougall, who received a standing ovation. Nigel Clough’s final change saw McGinn come on for Flynn who also was given a tremendous send off from the Bramall Lane faithful. Deep in stoppage time Howard produced a wonderful reflex save to deny Reza. Wembley now awaits the Blades arrival next month.
SPEECHLESS MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk
Speaking in the aftermath of remarkable scenes at the Lane, the Blades boss felt his side were good value for the win against their Championship opponents. He said: “We are incredibly proud of the players as we have for the last couple of months. “The last nine matches, culminating in this victory, have been very, very special indeed and this day will never be forgotten by everyone associated with the Club. “We have achieved this success by sheer hard work, that includes the coaching staff, but it is the players on the pitch that have won us the matches. “The defeat at Crewe was the turning point, the players knew that performance was unacceptable and from walking off the field at Gresty Road the determination within the group has been terrific. “We have produced performance after performance and I think we have thoroughly deserved to win each of the last nine matches.” Looking at the key moments of Sunday’s encounter, Clough added: “The atmosphere took everyone’s breath away and it worked against us early on because we looked a bit nervous and on edge. “The best players in the world are used to occasions like that, I hope our players will get used to it quickly though because we hope this is the first of many days to remember in the future. “The missed opportunity from Harriott in the second-half was a small turning point in the game, but gradually we grew into the contest and once we got that opening goal we never looked back. “It is simply a memorable day and one that we should all enjoy.”
