SHEFFIELD PREPARES TO WELCOME LE TOUR Sheffield is gearing up to welcome one of the world’s greatest sporting events when the impressive Tour de France cavalcade sweeps into the city this summer. Over 250,000 people are expected to descend on the city to watch the spectacular event on Sunday 6 July, with billions more TV viewers worldwide. The City Council has been working with the Tour de France organisers, Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation, to ensure local residents and businesses are prepared for the race as it passes through Sheffield. Councillor Isobel Bowler,

the Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure said: “The excitement is growing as the big day approaches when the Grand Départ of the world’s largest annual sporting event arrives in Sheffield. We have been working hard to ensure all the preparations are in place to make it a great success for everyone. “Details of the route are on the Welcome to Sheffield web site, together with answers to many of the most requested questions to enable people to make the most of this great event.” The 125 mile route of Stage 2 will see the world’s top cyclists start from York and make their way through Pennine

Yorkshire and the Peak District National Park into Sheffield. The route enters Sheffield on the A616 via Midhopestones and continues through Bradfield, Worrall, Oughtibridge, Grenoside, Hillsborough, Shirecliffe and Wincobank to the finish outside the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena. The Sheffield section of the race will include four testing ‘King of the Mountain’ climbs that make for an incredibly exciting race and finish. The aim is to provide a safe, enjoyable experience for all spectators when the Tour visits Sheffield. There will be a number of dedicated ‘spectator hubs’ along the course to ensure

as many people as possible have a great experience on the day. Details will be confirmed nearer the time. Road closures will be kept to a minimum, but it is anticipated the closures will be at least 8 hours before the race passes by. Special arrangements will be made to allow emergency services to use these roads. The longest road closure period is likely to be in the Attercliffe area, around the final few miles of Stage 2. Road closures in this area, particularly around the Motorpoint Arena, may last around 24 hours ahead of the race. Detailed discussions between various agencies have gone into the preparations

along the route, with emergency services and health and social care providers putting plans in place to maintain essential services and support for those who need it. Emergency access for ‘blue light’ services will be kept open at all times. The Welcome to Sheffield website at www. welcometosheffield.co.uk/ tdf2014 has information dedicated to all Tourrelated enquiries for the Tour de France and the route, including through Sheffield, and www. letouryorkshire.com has all the latest information including road closure and spectator information across the whole route.

Copley’s Column

I watched the Voice this week as I earnestly wanted local girl, and daughter of my pal, boxing promoter Dennis Hobson to get through. Regrettably, this was not to be, such was the high standard of the opposition. Unlike other similar competitions, every entrant on this show has an excellent voice. It is of course nigh impossible to judge the acts on stagecraft in such a short timescale. I do feel, however, that there will be no real losers in this competition, as the very appearance on this show gives them great kudos in their future career. Jessica performed a really great rendition of La La La to great applause from the audience, and complements from the judges and can only have just lost out. Thursday morning’s breakfast was unbelievable. We had the regulars, Jimmy Patton, currently on tour with his partner in the Patton Brothers, brother Brian and his younger brothers Barry and Paul who are the Chuckle Brothers, the wonderful comedian Bobby Dennis, the very funny Bernie Clifton and Bobby Knutt, Nancy, one of the original Kaye sisters, and of course our hosts, showbusiness legends Roy and Jackie Toaduff, who are now hoteliers. This week we were joined by the very famous north eastern comic Bobby Pattinson, Freddie ‘Parrot Face’ Davies and ex local singer Bob Gladwyn, who after a successful career left the area to become one of the biggest agents in the country. Listening to Bobby Pattinson, I was fascinated to hear how he won a talent competition after many heats as a young zany comedian, twenty years of age, and pocketed the tidy sum of a thousand pounds. With the money, he bought a band new Ford Prefect for five hundred and forty pounds and a grocers shop for one hundred and eighty pounds, starting a successful entrepreneurial career as well

as being a top earner as a comedian. It was not long before he bought the shop next door to his grocers and was the proud owner of the first self-service supermarket in the country. Bobby went from strength to strength and it was not long before he opened a nightclub in Newcastle, the ‘Talk of the Tyne’ This was hugely successful and three years later he opened another nightclub, Geordie Boys, which was again a huge success. He then ventured into the nursing home business, and currently owns eleven of these. Freddy ‘Parrot Face’ Davies was a joy to talk to, and I was quite surprised that he remembered me from our conversation at Paul Shanes funeral, possibly one of the few advantages of having only one arm. Bob Gladwyn lived in Chesterfield, but was educated in Sheffield, travelling daily through Dronfield.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

I walked into a library. I said to the woman, “Have you got any books about library etiquette?” “No,” she replied, “And put some clothes on.” “Sarcasm will get you nowhere in life,” my boss told me. “Well, it got me to the ‘International Sarcasm’ finals in Santiago, Chile in 2009,” I informed him. “Really?” he asked. “No,” I replied. “You’ve landed yourself a real trophy wife,” I told my mate. “She’s tattooed with all the names of the previous winners.” As I strolled in at lunchtime yesterday, my boss started moaning at me: “Where the hell have you been?” “On a course,” I replied. “Fair enough,” he said. “How did you get on?” “Not bad,” I smiled. “Three under par.” “Why the hell are you staring at my head?” asked some guy in the pub last night. I said, “I’m checking out the hair.” “But, I’m completely bald.” he replied. I said, “I’m talking about mine.” I think it’s funny when dogs hide under the bed when they’re scared. I’m like “you idiot, that’s the first place monsters go.”

I bumped into Humpty Dumpty in my local Indian last night, he’d just finished his so meal so I asked him what he ate. “I had a great phaal” he said. My mate’s just been given six months inside for stealing microwaves. He should be out in three and a half minutes.

Libra - Geranium Fairness and balance are a feature of the characters of this star sign. Librans love luxury and good wine, food, and clothes. Geranium suits the Libra sensibilities very well because this sweet fragrant oil is considered a balancing fragrance in aromatherapy circles. It is used in many perfumes and beauty treatments, which suits the sleek Libra very well. Scorpio - Patchouli This very sensual oil reflects the secretive and sexy nature of the Scorpion. It is a deep oil in terms of aromatherapy, and Scorpio personalities can identify with these deep feelings. Patchouli is known for its aphrodisiac qualities. A few drops into the Scorpio`s bath will send them into Seventh Heaven. Sagittarius - Black Pepper This stimulating oil is very similar to the direct and single minded Archer personality, in that it is not a very subtlefragrance .It gets straight to the point, just like the Archer’s arrow. Black Pepper is used in massage oil to tone and soothe tired muscles.

Aquarius - Neroli Aquarians have a reputation for being aloof and distant at times. This is not necessarily true because they are happy in their own company. The scent of Neroli is an aphrodisiac. The aloof Aquarian will often benefit from a massage with this oil. Aquarians are also susceptible to nervous disorders, and therefore sweet smelling Neroli is a must for this watery maiden. Pisces - Melissa This watery plant Melissa (or lemon balm, as it is also known) is ideal for the compassionate Pisces. People ruled by this star sign are prone to depression, and the uplifting aroma of melissa will lift their spirits. Melissa is the essential oil noted for chasing away the blues. NEWS & INFORMATION

SHEFFIELDERS LOVE THE DISASTER NO-ONE REMEMBERS TO CHAT DALE DYKE DAM BURST - 150TH ANNIVERSARY Sheffield has the chattiest neighbours in the UK, according to new research. Some 91 per cent of Sheffielder’s make time to talk to their neighbours, with 88 per cent of residents saying they are comfortable to start a conversation with a stranger. The nationwide study of 2,000 adults was carried out by The Big Lunch - a Lottery-funded initiative which encourages neighbours to have an annual get together. The survey also revealed that 57 per cent of Steel City folk feel getting to know their neighbours comes naturally to them, while 35 per cent say it makes where they live a happier place. Half of residents go out of their way to start a conversation with their neighbours, and 53 per cent who chat say it makes them feel more connected to the rest of their community. Clinical Psychologist Tanya Byron said: “It’s very easy to trivialise ‘small talk’ as tedious and time wasting, but in fact taking the time to have meaningful but minimal interactions is very important. These are the conversations that have meaning and benefit our immediate community and wider society. In taking the trouble to talk to your neighbour you may also be helping to reduce their sense of loneliness”. The most popular topics of conversations are weather, holidays, enquiring about wellbeing, children and local events.

FORGOTTEN HERO HONOURED The name of a navy airman who was executed by the Japanese in the Second World War has been added to a Sheffield War memorial. Ivor Barker was beheaded by two Japanese officers in a prison camp in Singapore two days after Japan had surrendered the territory in July 1945. After Mr Barker’s niece, Sandra Smith, discovered that his name was not on the local war memorial, a campaign led by Ms Smith ended withMr Barker’s name being added. A service of dedication has taken place at the site of the memorial at Christ Church, Hollinsend. Mr Barker was captured after his plane was shot down during a raid on an oil field. Ms Smith said that she only recently discovered the fate of her uncle, who was 21 when he was executed. Members of Mr Barker’s family were at the dedication service. Two other local men who died in the conflict have also had their names added. Thomas Croft, 29 and Stanley Davies, 24, were both killed during the invasion of Italy in 1944.

The flooding tragedy nobody has ever heard of: 150th anniversary of Sheffield disaster where at least 240 died when a new dam burst - but historians are dismayed it has been forgotten about. Dale Dyke Dam built to provide drinking water to the industrial heartland. It burst on the night of 11 March 1864, sending a torrent into central Sheffield. More than 700 buildings and 20 bridges were destroyed and 240 died. Many more were killed later as diseases spread through the stagnant water. As a gale swept through Sheffield on the night of Friday March 11 1864, water engineer William Horsfield was sheltering under the town’s new dam when he noticed a crack. It was only wide enough to take a pen knife, but it stretched along the earthen bank for 50 yards, following a jagged 12 yards from the top. Just before midnight the dam burst, sending 650 million gallons of water cascading into central Sheffield in a disaster which killed more than 240 people in their beds. Half of those who died instantly were children, and around 60 more were killed as diseases swept through the stagnant water in the aftermath. Historians marked the 150th anniversary of the tragedy on 11 March – but they say one of Britain’s worst disasters has been largely forgotten because the dead were northern and working-class. For years there was not a full-scale memorial to those who died in Sheffield, with only a small memorial stone near the village of Bradfield where the reservoir stood. Amateur historian Karen Lightower said: “I am passionate about the flood. It is this country’s worst ever man-made disaster but virtually nobody knows about it. It’s such a tragedy that so many died through no fault of their own. If it had happened in London there would be an annual memorial for it. Everyone should know about it. But, because it was in the north, and because it involved working class people nobody remembers it”. The dam was built by Sheffield Waterworks Company near the village of Bradfield from 1859 to provide drinking water for the people of the fast-growing industrial town. It was also designed to provide a supply of running water for the mills in surrounding villages. But as it was being completed and filled the structure collapsed, sending water cascading down the Loxley Valley which devastated farms and hamlets devoted to metalworking. The floodwater then moved down to meet the River Don and laid waste to large areas of the centre of Sheffield. One body was found at Conisbrough – 18 miles downstream. Harrowing stories emerged

of how many of the victims died. One person who drowned was a new-born baby washed from his mother’s arms in Bradfield. Three children died in a cellar in Sheffield while their parents were away. Then a village and now a suburb, Malin Bridge was worst hit by the flood with 102 deaths. A photograph of the shattered remains of the Cleakum Inn, rebuilt later as the Malin Bridge Inn, is one of the many striking images of the disaster. Historian Ron Clayton, who lives in Malin Bridge said it was ‘ground-zero’. It was devastated, whole families wiped out, buildings just washed away.” The death toll of the flood was massive. There’s nothing else to compare with it in peacetime in terms of man-made disasters. Mr Horsfield raised the alarm after he spotted the crack at 5.30 pm that day, but he thought it posed no major risk. It was examined later that evening but by 9pm the contractors had gone home, saying it would not be a danger to the public. That did not stop the water firm’s resident engineer, a Mr Gunson, travelling with a colleague that night to examine the state of the dam. According to Samuel Harrison, a journalist of the time, they crossed the dangerously unstable bank before his colleague cried: “If we don’t relieve the dam of water there’ll be a blow up on half an hour”. They tried to blow up a weir to relieve the pressure, but for one reason or another the gunpowder would not ignite. By then it was too late. As one inspector put it, according to Mr Harrison: “Not even a Derby horse could have carried the warning in time to have saved the people down the valley”. Mr Horsfield’s great-great-great-grandson, Malcolm Nunn, still lives in Bradfield and is the parish archivist. Last weekend, locals gathered at an exhibition in the village to mark the anniversary, to remember the disaster. The ceremonies included a wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial to the tragedy in Sheffield city centre. Guided walks and church services also took place and primary school children had sing songs commissioned specially to remember the disaster. Mick Drewry, whose book on the disaster is due out later this year said: “It’s not even very well known about in Sheffield, never mind locally. It was a major historical event and it needs to be remembered properly”. Sarah Hung travelled from Hong Kong to attend the memorial as she is descended from some of the victims. She said: “It’s such a massive disaster and its right its remembered like this even though it was 150 years ago”.

AUDIENCE GENEROSITY WE’LL MEET HELPS THEATRE GIVE ‘MORE’ AGAIN AT THE TO SHEFFIELD FOOD BANKS GARRISON

Sheffield Theatres has presented a cheque for £2300 to Sheffield Food banks following a collection made by the Theatre during a performance of their smashhit production of Oliver! this January. Ben Richards, who played Bill Sikes in the production, made a speech during the curtain call of the performance on Saturday 25 January and encouraged audiences to give generously to the scheme as they left the theatre that evening. Presenting a cheque to Paul Blomfield MP and Chris Marriot from the Jubilee Food Bank, Sheffield Theatres’ Chief Executive Dan Bates said: ‘I’d like to thank our audiences for their tremendous generosity. Their heartfelt donations demonstrate huge support for this local scheme and we are delighted we were able to help this worthy cause.’ Paul Blomfield MP, who has worked to support local food banks, said: ‘It’s shameful that in

one of the richest countries in the world so many people are going hungry, but we can’t ignore it. The Crucible’s wonderful gesture to hold a collection to support the local food banks and the enormous generosity of the audience will provide real support for people in need.’ Chris Marriot from the Jubilee Food Bank said: ‘We were bowled over by the huge amount donated by the Crucible’s audience. The 16 food banks in Sheffield rely on volunteers and donations of food and money. This money will help us prevent families and vulnerable people in our city from going hungry.’

The Garrison Hotel at Hillsborough barracks played host to our superb tribute to Vera Lynn last Thursday with guests arriving to a room decorated in bunting and flags, and 1940’s music. Gary Birtles opened the show with vocals and comedy from wartime era and introduced Lorrie Brown, who is the official UK number 1 National Tribute Award Winner for 2013. Lorrie provided a fabulous show packed with the hits from Dame Vera Lynn and for the next 60 minutes she wowed the audience with her renditions of A nightingale sang in Berkley Square, Yours, White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll meet again amongst many others. The atmosphere was incredible as most of the audience had their own memories of the war and 1940’s era. Flags were waving, people were singing, dancing, swaying, and generally enjoying this hugely entertaining show.

It was a rather special event for one group of ladies, all in their eighties, who used to work at the Garrison when it was Burdalls Gravy Salts many years ago and had to take their typewriters into the cellars upon the sound of the war siren. So it really did hold a lot of memories for those ladies (pictured). Another couple who thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon was Mr and Mrs Ward (pictured) from Birley, who have been married 61 years, and were the first to put their handS up, when Lorrie asked who could remember their first kiss!! The afternoon finished off with a second game of bingo, and more nostalgic music. The feedback as people were leaving was fantastic, and so we have re-booked the Garrison for 25th September, however if you cannot wait until then, and want to see this fabulous show, Lorrie is appearing at the Fairways on Birley Lane on Thursday 8th May. Tickets now on sale by calling 0114 2763633

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

Telephone 0114 233 7941 • www.sofcltd.co.uk

This week we recorded the Rotherham Schools Music Service charity concert for Rotherham Holiday Aid. The Rotherham Youth Brass Band and the Rotherham Youth Orchestra & Sinfonia Strings performed a selection of pieces to the packed audience at St James Church in Clifton on Friday evening. The Clifton Community Choir and Clifton Youth Choir also performed. Plus, former Rotherham music student, Rosie Thickett returned to sing a number of solo items. The event was a great success and raised around £800 for Rotherham Holiday Aid. This small local charity raises funds throughout the year to provide holidays to disadvantaged families from Rotherham. Most breaks are self-catering in a caravan park or holiday centre in the UK. More than 1500 families have been helped in this way since RHA began its work 25 years ago. Although often this is still because of unemployment, other families are supported where they are suffering the trauma of long-term illness, disability, bereavement or the breakdown of a relationship. Most people who are helped have never had the chance to spend time together away from the pressures of everyday life. The need for this support has not diminished over the years and in current circumstances shows every sign of increasing. Photos and a selection of audio from the concert are on our Facebook page. The full concert will be broadcast on Mothers Day Sunday 30 March 2014 at 4.00pm. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. REMEMBERING THE COCKLE MAN

To apply or for more information please contact Mr Lonsdale on 0114 266 1090 07843 967135

CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Last week I raised the question of what people are looking for, or at, when they visit the Club Historians website. One popular item is the piece about the cockle man which seems to be an enduring favourite. I asked the question a few years back, ‘ Can you remember the cockle man?’ It appears that many people did by the interest it still attracts and is reflected in our statistics. I can remember nights out in our local club when the cockle and mussel man would stop by on his rounds. He used to be ever-so popular, dressed in his white jacket and carrying a big wicker basket just like our baker did. Long before online shopping was invented, people used to come to our doors selling their goods! But the cockle man had different goodies in his basket, all from the sea. As we lived just about as far from the sea as you could possible get in this country (Coventry) sea food was exciting. Originally it was cockles and mussels, and maybe other fishy things, in a paper bag with an optional squeeze or two of vinegar eaten with a wooden fork. They used to go down a treat, making a change from a packet of crisps and bringing the smell and taste of the seaside a little closer. He got around too- being sighted all over the country. In later years he carried crab sticks and sweets and then expanded into exotic things like onion bhajis, I’m told. I didn’t see that myself but others did. And it was always a he though I’m sure there were later on some cockle women. But where is he, or she, nowadays? Has he retired to the South of France with a vast fortune some wonder? Or has he been the subject of the food hygiene inspectors or heath and safety brigade? I haven’t seen a cockle man for absolutely ages but the memory of his visits all over the country has been recorded on the website. There was even a cabaret devised that managed to keep keep the memory of the cockle man alive. Carry on Cabaret included him as “The Demented Cockle Man” in their wonderful act. The show was a fast moving multi- tribute act - very lighthearted, professional, entertaining. Now Gaz and Ellie, last I heard, have retired to Bulgaria. I wonder if that’s where all the cockle men have gone to?

PENGUINS, PIE & MOTOWN MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder

As a radio presenter sometimes folk expect you to be milling with the celebs, eating caviar and get the VIP treatment wherever you go, when really you’re like most other Yorkshiremen/Dads. I like hanging out with my family and friends and eating Pie. Take last weekend for instance, I thought it’d be a great idea to take my my little lad along to see the new penguins enclosure at The Deep in Hull. After battling the strong winds en route, we landed there and it turns out everyone else had the exact same ‘great idea’. So like every other dad in the queue I had my child on my shoulders and we all seemed to have this unified smile through the aching back and the ‘can I haves’ for nearly an hour until we finally got in. Granted it was the first week of the penguins so it was, according to the car park bloke (I’ll talk to anyone), the busiest he’d seen it 8 years but after all that we were rewarded. I got a pie for lunch plus the wife and I got to see the mesmerised look on our sons face when he saw the penguins, priceless. My point to all this is that no matter what we do we are all the same and it’s the simple things in life that bring us the most joy. On the Magic AM breakfast show this week I am giving away tickets to see Timeless Motown legends Four Tops and The Temptations plus guests The Platters and Freda Payne at the First direct arena in Leeds on Tuesday 1 April. Listen in at 8:20am tomorrow morning to find out how you could be a winner! Hope you can join me for breakfast weekday mornings on Magic AM from 6 - 10am and across the day on 990, 1305, 1548 AM, Digital Radio and online atmagicam.co.uk for just great songs.

KENDAL CALLING Only a short(ish) scenic drive from Sheffield Kendal Calling returns for a 9th action packed year with a whole host of incredible artists confirmed for the Lake District festival. Not content with winning more awards (Best Medium Sized Festival at the UK Festival Awards) and breaking world records (most people dressed as Superman in one place – 867 since you’re asking!) the Kendal Calling team have surpassed themselves with the first wave of acts to be announced for 2014. 2014’s first headliner Suede are one of the most revered British bands of the last 25 years with Brett Anderson and co racking up a host of much lauded indie singles and albums. After a hiatus the band returned in 2010 and released the critically and commercially acclaimed album ‘Bloodsports’ in 2013. Frank Turner’s anthemic folk-punk has seen him rise to become one of the country’s biggest musical artists of the last few years, accruing a large and devoted following and placing him firmly at the forefront of the new guitar renaissance in the UK. His five albums have given him an enviable body of work and Frank Turner is undoubtedly one of the most powerful live performers around. The much anticipated Hip Hop Legends slot this year goes to hip hop pioneers De La Soul. This slot is as much a part of Kendal Calling folklore as the fancy dress theme and the Real Ale tent and after last year’s blistering performance by Public Enemy the From The Fields team are delighted to have secured a more laid back performance from the daisy age, ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ legends who celebrate 25 years in the game in 2014. Alex Turner’s mate Miles Kane is a man noted as much for his sharp suits and dress sense as his angular music and lyrics and this most modern of pop stars will make the short journey from Liverpool to the lakes. Happy Mondays are Madchester royalty and in frontman Shaun Ryder possess and unlikely national

BRUTALITY WILL PREVAIL

Interview By Kt Evans

If 2014 could be the year of one band only, that accolade would land firmly in the hands of Brutality Will Prevail. Throwing together countless festival slots, a European tour along with the release of their forthcoming studio album ‘Suspension Of Consciousness,’ the five piece from Cardiff are taking on the year of the horse with success in their minds and passion in their hearts… “We just didn’t hold back on anything this time, we really just went for it,” gushes guitarist Nick who joined the band upon their formation back in 2005. “We wrote an album for ourselves, not just for people to mosh to. We’re all so pleased with how it turned out aswell.” Set for release on 7th April on Century Media, the record sees a remarkable journey since their 2006 EP “Life Is Our Way.” In come enormously anthemic hits, face melting breakdowns and intricately woven riffs, a personal approach to a genre which is in need of a spring clean…are Brutality Will Prevail up for holding the gauntlet? Too bloody right they are! “I think all of our influences in the band were fused together to create the record, we put our all into it and we got an outcome we couldn’t be happier with.” Having been inspired by some of the genres most infamous acts, Brutality Will Prevail turned to a host of head banging Gods for help with their new release. More than evident within ‘Suspension of Consciousness,’ the albums varied nature of hard hitting vs instrumental tracks lays out a spot on balance within its hour long running length. ‘Pray For Cleansing’ opens with a haunting riff balanced perfectly by ‘Abandon,’ a kick in the groins to anybody who thought the band had played it safe. “Obviously in terms of writing, you can tell there are many different influences on every record. I was listening to Converge and Nails and stuff like that. I remember when I went on tour once I was listening to the same record for a solid two weeks. I was listening to a lot of Baroness because Marc our drummer said you need to listen to these records. A lot of Pink Floyd, Crow Bar, everything!” Since the release of their 2012 hit “Scatter The Ashes,” Nick and company took time out of the scene to allow for their creative juices to once again seep back into their creative cores. And who could blame them…live on stage, the band resemble that of caged circus lions, wound up with energy and desire to spread the BWP hype. Having not only built up a powerful name for themselves but also a fan base to match, it’s all guns blazing for Brutality Will Prevail.

treasure. Their set will be a hugely anticipated affair as fans gather to hear seminal baggy anthems such as ‘Step On’, ‘Kinky Afro’, ‘Hallelujah’ and a host more as the Mondays baggy swagger engulfs the Lake District. Other confirmed acts include RAM Records founder and drum & bass don Andy C, Radio 1’s new music head honcho Zane Lowe, electro duo and local heroes Bondax with and all-star cast of b2b sessions, Metalheadz royalty Goldie, MJ Cole and a host of other swashbuckling turntable evangelists. Other confirmations include Razorlight with their arsenal of alternative anthems, Brits Critics Choice winner and keyboard pounding singer songwriter Tom Odell and recent number 1 singles acts and electronic collective Clean Bandit who are one of the most exciting breakthrough acts in the UK right now. Newton Faulkner’s unique, percussive guitar playing and emotive songs are sure to provide one of the weekend’s biggest sing-alongs while Gorgon City get ready for your love and bring their booty shaking bass to the Lakes. Many more acts have been confirmed to play with hundreds more set to join them in August in arguably the most beautiful festival site in the UK. Kendal Calling festival is renowned for its expansive cultural offering presenting a smorgasbord of artsy treats for festival goers. With some amazing musical artists providing sustenance for the soul, the arts programme offers some welcome nourishment for the mind and body as an eclectic array of performance art, comedy and spoken word takes place over the weekend in the stunning surrounds of the Lake District. With gourmet food, a real ale festival and the dedicated children’s Ladybird Arena as part of the mix, Kendal Calling is one of the UK’s best festivals and outstanding value at just £119 for the weekend.

Psychic

Tickets are more information are available at www.kendalcalling.co.uk “Being away for so long, we were working on ideas whilst away and we didn’t get a proper chance to sit down together and have band practice. I think we had about 2 or 3 months then started jamming and writing songs again. We got together for a couple of weekends to change parts and sort everything out. It just seemed to flow really quick. Being away from writing for so long, I just think there were so many ideas which we picked up being away I guess.” If you think you have a busy summer ahead of you…you haven’t heard anything yet! Set for the UK festival season, European tours aswell as a host of local venue shows, it would be an impossible mission not to catch at least one of Brutality Will Prevail’s gigs throughout 2014. Performing on both dates of Hit The Deck Festival from 19th – 20th April, the mighty Sonisphere alongside the Impericon Festival with Terror and Bury Tomorrow, we could make ourselves feel better by expressing how much of a hangover the five piece will have… but really we’re just green with envy! “We can’t wait for summer, festival season is always the best part of touring. We get to see loads of places and it’s always hot because we get the chance to travel around. It’s awesome playing small venues and having everyone jump on top of each other but when you’re playing big festivals to new crowds its always exciting. I get to see Brand New for free this summer, I get to see Deftones, Alice In Chains, it’s going to be insane!” Held at Manchester’s Ritz on 27th April, The Impericon Festival is set to supply the North of England with a hellishly delicious mix of metal, hardcore and punk entertainment. Flying the flag for Wales and performing with the likes of Terror, Stick To Your Guns, Despised Icon and Bury Tomorrow, it seems festival season has well and truly landed. “We’re super excited for the Impericon Festival, we played the German one last year and that was a massive experience for us because it was the biggest crowd we’ve ever played to. We played at 11 in the morning to about 3,000 people which was insane and the reaction was awesome. It ran smoothly and was such a laugh so we can’t wait to play this year in Manchester. I think Jordan’s parents are coming down to see the show which is nice because it’s the first time they will have ever seen the band perform!” If there is one thing we are allowed to truly hate about festival season however it is this…camping. Similar to that of marmite, cherry coke and peanut butter, you either absolutely love the outdoors or bloody hate them. Ok so we’ll agree that campsites are the one place in relatively ‘normal’ society where wearing a onesie is ok (just) and drinking Strongbow at 10am is the norm…but still. “We used to camp at festivals but last year at Download it hammered it down and all our clothes got ruined. It was like a swimming pool so we decided that we didn’t want to do that again.” The feeling Nick, is mutual.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

A bit of a mixed bag this week, I’ve met the type of angler I can’t stand on the bank, caught a fish, seen some tarty new tackle and met some lovely people too....so where to start? A session on a Cheshire club water saw me lucky enough to drop into the most popular peg on the fishery, settle in and await a nice dark mirror whilst enjoying the early morning mist as the hours passed. A thick Liverpudlian accent rudely shattered my musings; “Ay mate” (I’m not your mate, I’ve never seen you before in my life) “What time are you going?” (I’m peacefully enjoying my angling thank you). Not even a simple “hello”, nor a polite cough beforehand, just the phlegm enhanced grating of an irritating individual who couldn’t be bothered to make the effort to attend the fishery in good time, and expected me to move to accommodate his angling; it’s not happening sorry, and a seven hour standoff ensued. He even had the temerity to dump his kit behind me and lay on his bedchair.....watching, tutting, and looking at his watch..... When I’d had enough, caught my intended target and adjudged that he didn’t really have enough light to set up, I departed.... Learn some manners and you might get somewhere, but you are the angler whom we with more etiquette love to abhor....chump. On the flip side, an excellent Open Day at Soar Tackle in Kegworth saw me attend with fellow Marukyu ambassadors Roy and Nick Marlow to showcase our wares to anglers and customers. I’ve not really ‘done’ one of these events before, so was a little apprehensive; would I be able to explain exactly how good Marukyu baits are? What situations they should be used in? Answer any concerns? Debate any questions sensibly? As an angler, my knowledge of some disciplines is fairly good, but I do know there is always someone I can learn from, and to think otherwise is both arrogant and dangerous. It takes only one mistake to ruin any credibility, so I listen too; receive before transmitting is advice I’ve always tried to follow and it’s served me well so far. I can only improve my knowledge by absorbing what others already know, and much fun was had with customers. It was a very enjoyable day with many anglers purchasing Marukyu products, some for the first time, but surely not the last! Whilst at Soar Tackle, I met Martin and Wendi Roe who brought along some of the hugely stylish StarFlite S3 stainless bankware. I’ve never fancied a stainless system before, but after discussing the manufacture and perusing the products, I was hooked! The banksticks have an extremely innovative, practical and efficient locking system to ensure that they don’t slip, twist or deflect, and it’s completely different to the fiddly knurled locking nut which is often lost in the mud, or the tiny bars seen on other products, and I was impressed greatly; I now own a set of stainless banksticks and buzzbars! There are more products in the pipeline for the Star-Flite range and the official launch was a great success...keep your eye out for them on the bank, you will love them! The new website goes live sometime this month, but you can find out more about the whole range by checking out Star-Flite Stainless Nottingham on social media sites.

racing form by Timelord

There are three Channel 4 meetings this Saturday – two National Hunt ones (at Kelso and Newbury) and one Flat all-weather meeting at Lingfield. The scheduled “off” times start at 1.30 and finish at 3.50 but all the races have a “well nigh impossible” look to them in my estimation.

in decent efforts last time and several of the others looking to be totally unexposed at three. Again no great confidence in the selection is the conclusion to be drawn. 3.50 Coral.co.uk Winter Derby (Fast Track Qualifier), Group 3, 4yo+, 1m2f: As if to compound a very difficult day’s racing thoroughly here we are faced with 23 runners at this stage, all of whom have respectable chances on their best efforts. A chance is taken that the French gelding Vodkato can turn up trumps after some quite meritorious performances on his last few outings last year. He has had a pipe-opener in France a fortnight ago and could be primed for a big run if making the trip over. In the event of a nonappearance by the selection the reserve order is: Rebellious Guest; Grandeur; Farraaj; Circumvent; Captain Cat; Parish Hall; Robin Hood’s Bay; and Anaconda. A word of caution however – all of the reserves recorded ratings (in my system) within 11 points of each other last time out and that is not much of a margin when the vicissitudes and vagaries of racing are taken into account.

Kelso: 1.30 Abbey Tool & Gauge Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 0-120, 2m 110yds: This looks to be quite a competitive race for a relatively modest contest. Seven of the current sixteen entries posted ratings in my system on their last outings and all bar one (Scimon Templar) have a lifetime rating. Even Scimon Templar has been showing some consistent form however so none can be totally discounted. Lifetime top ratings in descending order are held by: Absinthe; Captain Brown; Cool Baranca; and Trust Thomas but I am more persuaded by the last time out ratings recorded. The best of these are held by (again in descending order): Trust Thomas; Captain Brown; Moss Cloud; Rhymers Ha; and Cool Baranca. Captain Brown, Cool Baranca and Trust Thomas Saturday selection summary (see above for make it onto both lists with the nod going to Trust reserves in the event of non runners): Thomas. The reserve order is: Captain Brown; Kelso: Moss Cloud; Rhymers Ha; and Cool Baranca. 1.30 Trust Thomas Newbury: Newbury: 2.20 Ultima’s Matt Hudson Handicap Chase, 2.20 Bally Legend 5yo+, 0-150, 2m 4f: 2.55 Run Ructions Run All bar two of these registered ratings in my 3.30 Niceonefrankie system on their last outings. The two that missed Lingfield: out were Gus Macrae and Pepite Rose, but all of 2.40 Iptisam them have decent lifetime ratings so this could be another very open event. The selection fallsaon 3.15 Expert Bally Legend who registered the best last time out 3.50 Vodkato figure when winning the Grade 3 Betbright Chase Good Luck! at Kempton last month. Next best last time out was Tony Star followed by Grandad’s Horse, Tara Last week’s Cheltenham results: Rose, Roudoudou Ville, Balzaccio and Ulck du After non runners were taken out the final Lin -these form the reserve list in that order. selections and results were: 2.55 EBF Stallions & TBA Mares’ “National Tuesday: Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle Finale (Limited 1.30 Vautour – won @ 7/2 Handicap), Listed, 4yo+, 2m 5f: (for 4yo+ Fillies + each way Sea Lord – non runner and Mares that have not run in a Flat race). 2.05 Champagne Fever – 2nd @ 11/4 My top few in this one (on lifetime best ratings) are: + each way Ted Veale – fell (25/1) The Pirate’s Queen; Bobble Boru; Brijomi Queen; Free Thinking; Mrs Peachey; Run Ructions Run; 2.40 Tour des Champs – 5th @ 11/1 Luci di Mezzanotte; Down Ace; and Toubeera. + each way Pacha du Polder – 10th @ 50/1 However, Tim Easterby’s Run Ructions Run has 3.20 Hurricane Fly – 4th @ 11/4 good consistent form (she has never finished out + each way P’tit Zig – 6th @ 28/1 of the first three in her nine lifetime races) and 4.00 Quevega – won @ 8/11 has earned my nomination here by providing the + each way D’Oyly Carte – 14th @ 40/1 best last time out rating. She will need to be at her best however as this looks to be a cracking contest 4.40 All non runners with many top stables having representatives. 5.15 Art of Logistics – 13th @ 13/2 My preference for the reserve order comes from + each way Shanpallas – non runner their last time out ratings and comprises: Down Ace; Toubeera; Luci di Mezzanotte; Koolala; Lily Wednesday: Waugh; Brijomi Queen; and Free Thinking. 1.30 All non runners 2.05 Corrin Wood – 10th @ 10/1 3.30 Ultima – Proud Sponsors of Alan King Racing + each way Ardkilly Witness – non runner Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 0-140, 3m 2f 110yds: With almost half of the entries posting a last time 2.40 Sametegal – 8th @ 25/1 out rating this could be another very tricky event. + each way Streets of Newyork – non runner The one that recorded the best last time out figure 3.20 Sire de Grugy – won @ 11/4 was Niceonefrankie and this is where the fickle + each way Savello – non runner finger of fate (otherwise known as the “Timelord” 4.00 Quantitativeeasing – 13th @ 16/1 nomination) falls. The reserve order is: Sheriff Hutton; Storm Survivor; Sydney Paget; What A + each way Duers – non runner 4.40 Orgilgo Bay – 3rd @ 16/1 Warrior; Balzaccio; and Loughalder. (advised each way) Lingfield eld: 5.15 Vigil – 5th @ 5/1 2.40 Bookmakers.co.uk Hever Sprint Stakes + each way Flying Eagle – non runner (Fast Track Qualifier), Listed, 4yo+, 5f: I cannot squeeze a cigarette paper between these from the recent ratings they have lodged in my Thursday: system so be prepared for about seven or eight to 1.30 Felix Yonger – 4th @7/2 2.05 Pateese – 13th @ 50/1 be in line abreast across the track near the finish. The (very un-confident) nod goes to Iptisam with 2.40 Dynaste – won @ 3/1 Addictive Dream, Ladies Are Forever, Monsieur 3.20 Celestial Halo – 10th @ 20/1 Joe, Agerzam, Caspian Prince, Forest Edge and 4.00 Mr Cracker – pulled up (66/1) Silken Express all not expected to be more than a whisker away at the death and the remainder far 4.40 Fine Parchment – pulled up (50/1) from out of it if at their best. 3.15 32Red Spring Cup (Fast Track Qualifier), Listed, 3yo, 7f: If Richard Hannon’s Expert can translate his turf form to the all-weather surface he should just about be able to get his head in front where it matters. It could be a close thing however with Steventon Star, Sir Robert Cheval, Oriental Relation, Pool House, Mick’s Yer Man, Sloane Avenue, American Hope, Wee Jean and Major Crispies all having put

Friday: 1.30 Guitar Pete – 3rd @ 7/1 2.05 Strongpoint – 19th @ 33/1 2.40 Sausalito Sunrise – 6th @ 50/1 3.20 Silviniaco Conti – 4th @ 11/4 4.00 Carsonstown Boy – 2nd @ 40/1 4.40 Open Day – pulled up (33/1) 5.15 Savello – won @ 16/1.

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14

ROVERS EARN GOOD POINT AT THE CITY GROUND A sunny spring afternoon made it perfect weather for playing football. Rovers turned out the same team that started the game against Watford on Tuesday. Quinn received a head injury in the first minute and was off the pitch for five minutes before returning to with his head bandaged. Forest did most of the early attacking, with Majewski giving inside to Paterson, who put across to Cox at the far post area but his weak effort was easily saved by Johnstone. In the tenth minute a low cross from the Forest right by Majewski went across the face of goal but the onrushing Cox couldn’t get there and the ball ran away and out. Minutes later and Cox had a good chance but put wide from 15yards. In the 20th minute, Coppinger got down the Rovers right and put over a good cross which was played out of the Forest defence to Wellens, whose cracking volley from 25yards was pushed round the post by Darlow diving to his left. The corner kick came out of the Forest defence to Coppinger and his fierce drive was also pushed out by Darlow for another corner. At the other end Halford, for Forest, was played in on goal but his poor effort was saved comfortably by Johnstone. Just before the half hour Forest won a free kick about 25 yards out in a central position. Jara went for goal but Johnstone saved well. Past the half hour and Cotterill came in from the left to the edge of the penalty area before hitting a low shot wide of the near post. In the 35th minute Majewski received about sixteen yards out to the right of goal and blasted a shot to the far corner of goal. Johnstone got down brilliantly to parry it away. A couple of follow-up shots by the Forest were blocked and the ball was eventually cleared. Four minutes later a Forest free kick just outside the Rovers penalty area to the left of goal was headed over the bar by Collins.

The 43rd minute brought a good build-up by Rovers down their right. Eventually Duffy cut in and hit a rasper just over the bar.Rovers got the second half underway and won a corner on their left. Duffy played it out to Husband on the edge of the penalty area but the ball sat up and Husband put it high and wide. Four minutes in and a good build-up by Rovers ended with Wellens volleying just over the bar from 30yards. Over the next fifteen minutes Forest went on the offensive but they were held at bay by the defence, with Johnstone not called on to make a real save. Forest made a couple of substitutions bringing on their big and experienced strike force, Mackie and Henderson. In the 67th minute Rovers got back into the game, with Duffy, despite the attentions of a Forest defender, getting in a shot from the edge of the penalty area but Darlow saved comfortably. Then, following a free kick, Sharp had a good effort from the left blocked but won the corner. Husband followed this with a run down the left before passing inside to Duffy but he fired wide from 25yards. A corner to Forest was well caught by Johnstone and a few minutes later they brought on a third striker, Derbyshire. As the last fifteen minutes came up Rovers pushed forward. A corner and a couple of free kicks caused problems in the Forest defence. From the second free kick, Brown running in met it but shot wide. Husband had a go from the left, with the keeper only managing to push it out at the near post As time began to run out Forest hit back with a couple of corners then Cotterill at the other end cut in from the left but shot wide of the far post. In the 90th minute a fierce drive from Majewski about 25yards to the left of goal was brilliantly tipped over by Johnstone. The Forest crowd urged their team on but it was not going to be for them. Rovers had done well all round and a point was well deserved.

THE PLAYERS HAVE GOT PRIDE

GAFFER Local Football DISAPPOINTED WITH DRAW...

by Michael Clarke

County Senior League It has been a week defined by Cup Semi-Finals, but ended with league developments at the forefront of the mind.

Rotherham United boss Steve Evans was left disappointed despite the Millers stretching their unbeaten streak to 12 games. Substitute Nicky Adams equalised with three minutes of normal time remaining after Milan Lalkovic had put the visitors ahead in the first-half, and although Ben Purkiss saw red in the second period, the Millers couldn’t make their dominance count. “I think we’re disappointed aren’t we. They’ve only had two efforts on goal, one in the first and Adam Collin’s made a good save in the second but they’ve taken their goal well. It was a good finish to be fair to them, but I thought we lacked a yard in the first period, lacked quality and lacked a bit of composure. It was there in the second half though and I thought we laid siege to their goal. We got a point, our passion isn’t in question but one or two players were just a notch down.” Two changes were made following two separate injuries picked up in training yesterday meaning Richard Brindley started the game at full-back and Wes Thomas regained his place up front following a thigh strain. “We’ve worked on our shape yesterday and then two players miss out and we have to change things. It was two separate incidents; Mark Bradley has twisted his knee so he’ll have that scanned tomorrow and James Tavernier has blocked a shot at the end of the session and it’s twisted something but he’ll be ok for next week, Mark we don’t know about yet.”

Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his side’s 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest. “I’m delighted with a point, if you had said before last Saturday we would pick up seven points against three very good teams, I probably would have took that. “There is a little part of me that is slightly disappointed we didn’t win it, I thought throughout the game we had periods where our football was top class and we created some really good chances. “All credit has to go to the players because this is a tough place to come against a very good team. “What it has shown me this week and the fans, is that the players have got pride in the shirt and character in the changing room. “Defensively I thought we were outstanding as a group and on the ball we really caused them some problems.”

WELL(ENS) EARNED POINT Doncaster Rovers midfielder Richie Wellens spoke to Rovers Player after helping the club to a 0-0 draw away at Nottingham Forest. “I think before the game if you had offered us a point we would have taken it. “We were a bit sloppy in the last ten minutes trying to go for the win, because we played so well in the match we thought we could have got the win. “I think sometimes when we have the chance to put a good ball in or take control of the game or make a chance, we are a little bit rushed and impatient. If we can close down and obviously work as hard as we do, but relax just a little bit more we will create more chances. “I think in the end they were playing with six strikers on the pitch. They have a big squad and good players, I don’t think many teams come here and win. “We’d have took a point and with the results going the way they did, it was a good point to get.”

S&HCFA Senior Cup Semi-Final On Wednesday night Oughtibridge WMFC travelled to Sheerien Park to take on Athersley Recreation of the Premier Division of the North Counties East League. Sadly the Premier Division leaders fell short, losing 4-0 on the night. U21 Cup Semi-Final Two goals from Alex Nightingale inspired Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 to a 3-1 win over Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21 at the Memorial Ground. The U21 Division leaders will face North Gawber Colliery U21 in the final at the Look Local Stadium on April 3rd. League Cup Semi-Final 2010-11 League Cup winners Houghton Main sealed their place in the League Cup Final with a emphatic 5-1 win over Handsworth at Sandy Lane. Adam Stead set the tone for the tie early on scoring a long distance strike for Houghton Main, his goal was added to by Ashley Emmett, Jake Simon, Ashley Vickers and Kieran Hurst. Premier Division Premier Division leaders Oughtibridge beat third placed Handsworth 1-0 on Saturday to extend their lead at the top to 13 points. Handworth have had a terrible week losing last Saturday to second placed Penistone Church and losing heavily in the League Cup Semi-Finals midweek. The aforementioned Penistone Church could only manage a 0-0 away to Frecheville on Saturday. A fast improving Ecclesfield Red Rose held in-form League Cup finalists Houghton Main to a 1-1 at the Civil Service Ground. Swinton Athletic claimed their second consecutive win with a 4-0 away victory over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves at the Look Local Stadium. 17 year old Ryan Smith scored twice to help Athersley Recreation Reserves to a 3-2 away win over Swallownest Miners Welfare. Third bottom High Green Villa and bottom side Wombwell Main could not be separated at Thorncliffe Playing Fields, as they played-out a 1-1 draw. High Green remain at the foot-of-the-table, a point behind Wombwell. Wombwell slipped a place as Everest climbed above them following a 2-0 home win over Millmoor Juniors. Division One League leaders Joker FC stretched their unbeaten league run to 11 games, with a narrow 1-0 win over Sheffield Bankers at Davy Sports Club. They lead second placed Wickersley by 13 points, but Wickersley do have two games spare. Wickersley were also victorious on Saturday, as two goals from Ben Thornton gave them a 2-0 win over Penistone Church Reserves. Rotherham Town climbed into fourth place, with a convincing 3-0 home win over bottom side Davy FC. They sit two points behind Wickersley, with a game in hand. Goals from Ross Gregory and Thomas Beech gave Thorpe Hesley a 2-1 win over South Kirkby Colliery at Rockingham Community Centre. Thorpe Hesley are now four games without defeat. Double strikes from Scott Hartley and Chris Telling helped Millmoor Juniors Reserves to a 5-3 away win over Hallam FC Reserves. Millmoor have now won four of their last five games, scoring 19 times in the process. Division Two Bramley Sunnyside won a vital three points against fellow strugglers Kiveton Park, with a 3-1 win over them at Stone Close. Bramley climb above Kiveton into third from last position. Jordan Lodge scored twice for league leaders North Gawber Colliery to help them a 4-2 home win over New Bohemians. Second placed Kingstone United remain only a point behind leaders North Gawber (with a game in hand), after they beat Sheffield FC Reserves 2-1 at Barnsley Sports College. North Gawber have a far superior goal difference to Kingstone though, as they currently have the best defensive record in the County Senior League and the most prolific attack. Third placed AFC Dronfield stretched their unbeaten league run to seven games, with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Boynton Sports. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves have had a busy week. Firstly they were 4-3 winners over Maltby Main Reserves at Park Road on Wednesday night. They showed no signs of fatigue on Saturday though, as they equalised in injury time to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Bawtry Town. Worsbrough are on a fine run of form, which has seen them lose only once in seven matches and carry them into a comfortable mid-table position. Maltby Main Reserves bounced back from their midweek defeat to Worsbrough, by beating Frecheville Reserves 6-1 at Muglet Lane. Luke Norberry starred for Maltby scoring twice.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS BACK TO WINNING WAYS AGAINST CITY SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk In the previous meeting at St Andrew’s this season, Birmingham inflicted a heavy defeat on Wednesday but the Owls returned the favour at Hillsborough on Saturday. Wednesday added three points to the board with a comfortable 4-1 win over the Blues. Caolan Lavery was the man of the moment, scoring twice with goals also coming from Leon Best and a Will Packwood own goal. Lee Novak did pull one back for the Blues but that did little to influence the outcome of a game that the Owls largely controlled from the off. Stuart Gray rang the changes, with Chris Maguire, Kieran Lee, Sam Hutchinson and Atdhe Nuhiu all back in the starting 11. Wednesday were first to threaten in the contest with a low Maguire free kick well gathered by Darren Randolph. But there was little the former Motherwell goalkeeper could do to prevent the Owls’ opener on 16 minutes. Lavery advanced down the right before tricking his marker with a neat cut back and drilling into the bottom corner of the Kop net. The Northern Ireland Under-21 was at the heart of the action moments later as Wednesday struck again to stun the Blues.

Maguire’s corner was flicked goalwards by Lavery and Best was left with the easiest of tasks to knock into the net on the goal line. Rocked by the early setback, Blues boss Lee Clark made an early change with left back Tyler Blackett making way for Paul Caddis. The visitors’ first sign of intent came midway through the first period when Novak broke clear on the counter but Glenn Loovens made a superb recovery challenge to stop the ex-Huddersfield man in his tracks. Then on the stroke of the whistle, Nuhiu slammed home into the net from six yards from a low Lewis Buxton centre, but the referee ruled out the strike for an infringement from the big striker. It was proving a tough old afternoon for Birmingham that was made worse just before the hour when the unfortunate Packwood diverted past his own goalkeeper. After a pacy piece of wing play by Jeremy Helan, the Frenchman fizzed a low cross into the box and as Packwood stuck out a leg to intercept, the ball

looped up over Randolph and into the net. Birmingham’s luck was out on that occasion but Wednesday were in no mood to relent as Lavery thumped home his second of the game. Maguire teed up the 21-year-old, who took aim and slammed into the top corner – undoubtedly the goal of the game. With the points all but wrapped up for the hosts, Birmingham notched a consolation when Federico Macheda fired across goal with Novak lurking in the centre to convert. But Wednesday remained comfortable as the clock ticked down to make a return to winning ways. Owls: Martinez, Buxton, Loovens (Llera 75), Onyewu, Helan, Hutchinson, Lee, Maguire (Afobe 69), Lavery (J Johnson 80), Nuhiu, Best Birmingham: Randolph, Robinson (Martin 46), Burke, Novak, Packwood, Lee (Macheda 55), Shinnie, Spector, Adeyemi, Huws, Blackett (Caddis 24)

REDA WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk Sheffield Wednesday’s Reda Johnson won the PFA Player in the Community Award at The Football League Awards 2014. Johnson received the award at the gala ceremony at The Brewery, London, on Sunday evening in front of over 600 guests from clubs, sponsors and the football industry. Johnson beat competition from MK Dons’ David Martin and Leyton Orient’s Elliot Omozusi to claim the PFA Player in the Community Award. Having made over 100 community appearances over the last three seasons and pledged a substantial donation to allow a local school to purchase a computer system for the less physically able at Norfolk Park school, Sheffield, Johnson has thrown himself into the club’s community programme. Reda said: “Helping the community) is very important. It is part of the job. We play football, we are very happy, football gives us a lot and we have a chance to do a sport we enjoy. “Sometimes you have to think about other people and try to help people who need it. Sometimes it is not only about money, it is just a smile, you go to see people and try to make their lives a bit easier. “I love it. It’s like when fans ask me for pictures or autographs, some people are shy but I don’t think they have to be shy. We are paid for that. It is not only 90 minutes on a Saturday, it is a full week and we are well paid to do that.” For this award, clubs were asked to nominate one player from their first team squad that they felt had played the most significant part in supporting the club’s community programme during the 2013 calendar year. When assessing the category, judges were looking to recognise the player whose involvement has gone above and beyond that which would normally be expected of a professional player, either across a broad range of community programmes or in support of one particular activity. ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR THE BLADES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk A colossal defensive performance enabled the Blades to make it eight clean sheets on the bounce. United could not make it 11 successive wins at promotion-chasing Preston North End in front of the Sky Sports cameras but battled doggedly for a valuable point. Preston had the better of the chances but time and time again the Blades made blocks and tackles to prevent the home side from ruining Mark Howard’s shutout run. Freeman made his full debut for United in front of the Sky Sports cameras, slotting in at right-back - he replaced fellow loanee Davies, who dropped to the substitutes’ bench, as boss Clough made one change from the 1-0 victory over Carlisle United. Howard’s run of clean sheets was severely tested inside 30 seconds. He saved but could not hold a volley from Davies but recovered to smother as Garner looked to pounce on the loose ball. The visiting side’s defence was put under pressure on a number of occasions in the opening exchanges and a 25-yard free-kick from former Blades loanee Gallagher was just over on 14 minutes. For United, Murphy cut inside and sliced wide from distance but it was a brief respite as the home side continued to force the Blades back. Garner just failed to connect with a pacy Humphrey cross from the right and there was also a penalty appeal that was turned away. Harris did well to block from Garner and Maguire was forced to kick away a Gallagher cross. On 32 minutes, the Blades had the ball in the net, unfortunately it did not stand. Coady broke from midfield and was

the one to put in the net after a move involving Murphy and Flynn but the loanee was adjudged to be offside as he planted the ball past goalkeeper Rudd. Once again, though, North End responded as a Davies shot was deflected for a corner, which was to pave the way for a triple effort from the home side. Garner’s headed was blocked by Harris, Doyle then got in the way of Wright’s shot before Howard saved Gallagher’s powerful follow up. For all their attempts going forward, Preston looked worried when the Blades stepped over the halfway line. Coady almost got on the end of a Murphy cross when the Scot went around Wiseman and then a drive from Harris was blocked. Unfortunately it was the last contribution from Harris, who limped off soon after and was replaced by former Preston defender Hill, who received a warm applause from the home fans. Just before the break a shot from Baxter was comfortable for Rudd but the Blades striker was laid flat out on the turf as the half-time whistle blew following a tough challenge in midfield. Baxter re-appeared for the second half and but the Blades were forced into another change, Hill did not return which saw Davies introduced and Freeman switched to left-back. United looked promising at the start of the second period but the chances were still falling Preston’s way. On 55 minutes Brownhill found space on the left but struck a post and Garner headed over a

Buchanan cross. Neat feet almost found Scougall space but the Preston pressure continued and there was another nervous moment when Garner’s shot from a Humphrey cross crept just wide of Howard’s far post. A couple of corners, with Maguire popping up at the back post, kept the home defenders on their toes, whilst a slip by Rudd almost gave Murphy an opportunity as the game entered the final 20 minutes. Gallagher did finally put the ball in the back of the net on 74 minutes but both he and Garner were offside and Clough then used his last change with Porter taking over from Baxter. Tired legs were again coming into play and Preston made a double change. Into the last ten minutes, a Holmes cross saw Howard punch out and Doyle block the follow up from Gallagher. Moments later a Holmes corner was flicked to the back post but Gallagher’s header was held under the crossbar by the hard-working Blades goalkeeper. On 87 minutes a Davies cross was headed over by Porter and after Preston’s umpteen penalty appeals it was United’s turn to be denied a spot-kick in injurytime when Clarke and Maguire clashed. Four minutes of added time was announced and the Blades, like the previous 90, protected Howard’s goal and the hugely vocal Unitedites in the away end went home with a precious point.

IMPRESSED MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough hailed his side following Monday night’s 0-0 draw at Preston North End. The Blades were unable to make it 11 successive wins but did make it a Club record of eight consecutive clean sheets with a resolute defensive display. Afterwards, the Blades chief commented: “It was a superb battling point, we’ve not defend much better than that in the last ten games - under the circumstances, losing two left backs, and how good a side Preston are, it was a brilliant clean sheet. “I thought we were better in the second half and could have nicked it, including a good shout for a penalty late on, maybe we wouldn’t have deserved it but we would have taken it. We could see that Harry’s shirt was being pulled, maybe the referee couldn’t see but the ref had a good game, generally. “I didn’t think we were good enough on the ball, we could have been more clinical on the break but a few things went astray. “That said, there was mental strength and character and that has to show through when you go to places like Deepdale. Six or eight weeks ago I don’t think we would have withstood that pressure but we have a belief now and the lads are spurring each other on. “It is a case of resting the lads up and getting them right for Saturday because one or two looked a little heavy legged at the end.”
