ANIMAL CHARITY ASK THE PEOPLE OF SHEFFIELD FOR HELP South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) is participating in the UK wide Wrappers to Riches recycling fundraising contest to see who can save the most used biscuit wrappers from landfill Local fundraisers from Sheffield are busy collecting as many used biscuit wrappers as they can whilst competing in the nationwide Wrappers to Riches recycling collection contest, in an effort to help both the local environment and the South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) charity. A combined £500 in charity prize donations will be awarded to the top twenty collectors across the country, so to help improve their collections and chances of being a winner the the SYESSR are calling for the support of people in Sheffield. The contest, which is running to Wednesday 30th April 2014 at 6pm, is part of a recycling fundraising scheme set up by McVitie’s and recycling experts TerraCycle called the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade. The scheme aims to reduce the billions of wrappers being sent to UK landfill as a result of most local councils being unable to recycle the mixed plastic packaging biscuit wrappers are comprised of. As well as working towards becoming the Wrappers to Riches winners, the South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) earns four TerraCycle points (normally two) for the weight of each biscuit wrapper of any brand they send in for recycling during the contest. Each point can be redeemed for a 1 pence contribution for the school, charity or non-profit organisation of the sender’s choice. Heather Pointer, one of the trustees at South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue (SYESSR) commented: “We joined the Biscuit Wrapper Brigade in 2013 and to date have saved 3,331 biscuit wrappers from landfill. We also collect on the Coffee Packaging Brigade, the JOHNSON’s Baby Wipes Packaging Brigade, the BIC Writing Instruments Brigade and the Tassimo Brigade. In total we have saved a staggering 19,049 pieces of waste from landfill with TerraCycle raising £639.48 for the SYESSR which will be used to care for unwanted or neglected Spaniels and help find them loving new homes. In 2013, thanks to the contributions of the wider community of Sheffield, we finished in eighth
place in the Biscuit Wrapper Roundup contest after collecting 2,187 biscuit wrappers during the contest and we are confident this year with the support of local people, we can collect even more and be crowned champions for the Wrappers to Riches contest. A collection box is available in the ResQued charity shop at on the High Street in the Swallownest area of Sheffield. Local people can drop off any brand of used biscuit wrapper, baby wipes pack, writing instrument, coffee refill bag, coffee bean bag, plastic coffee jar lid, single serve coffee sachet and Tassimo TDISC’s and outer flow wrap packaging. Not only will this support us in the competition, it will also help to benefit the environment.” All active locations on the Biscuit Wrapper Brigade are automatically entered into the Wrappers to Riches contest. The twenty top collectors throughout the duration of the contest will win contributions of
£125, £75, £25, or £10 to their chosen school, charity or non-profit organisation. In addition the Grand Prize winning location and First Runner Up will also receive a McVitie’s goodie bag full of biscuits. Regular Top Ten Leaderboards and Facebook updates will be made throughout the contest by TerraCycle so participants can see how well they are doing. People across the UK participating in the Brigade can use freepost labels to send in any brand of waste biscuit wrappers. These are then recycled into new products such as watering cans, waste bins and garden benches. To sign up, simply go to www. terracycle.co.uk and join the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade. To date, McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade participants across the UK have saved over 190,000 waste biscuit wrappers from landfill raising over £6,000 for worthy UK schools, charities and nonprofit organisations. For more information and to sign up for the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade / the Wrappers to Riches Collection Contest please see www. terracycle.co.uk/en-UK/brigades/mcvities-biscuitwrapper-brigade.html

Copley’s Column
This week is my favourite time of the year, the start of British summertime, and the act of putting the clocks forward by one hour is synonymous with a great feeling within myself of the joy of longer hours of daylight. Conversely, it has the opposite effect when we put the clocks back. Chesterfield was very quiet on Sunday with around fifteen thousand people going to Wembley to cheer on our local football team in the final of the Johnson Paint Trophy, hoping they would replicate their victory in this competition two years ago. I say our football team as I have dual residency in Dronfield and Chesterfield. Alas, it was not to be with Chesterfield losing out to Peterborough, after some questionable refereeing decisions by three goals to one. Chesterfield were the underdogs on the day, as Peterborough play in a higher division. On the bright side, they can now concentrate on the bigger prize of promotion. The day must have been a proud one for my pal Nick Johnson, reporter for Sky News and media representative at Chesterfield as he was the pitch announcer on the day. A rather sad fact, reported to me by my girlfriend’s young son Jack, was the rip off price of food at the stadium, with beef burger and chips costing over eight pounds. The moral of this story to all the Blades fans who are shortly to visit Wembley for their F.A.Cup semi-final against Hull City, is to take a pack up of some sandwiches, thus leaving more money for the over-priced beer. I have mentioned in this column before that I love it when artistes are supported by other acts on a night off, and I am pleased to report that local guitar maestro Russ Dennett has gone one better this week. On two occasions this week, he has not only gone to support other bands, he has actually got up and played guitar with them. On a rare weekend off, Russ guested with The Canyon on Friday night at the Horse and Jockey at Unstone and on Saturday night he made a guest appearance at the Duke of York in Eckington with top band Vindictive This has been historic for the gay and Lesbian community with legislation being finally passed allowing marriage between members of the same
sex. I do not have a problem with this as at the end of the day, it is all about love. I have some terrific gay and Lesbian friends, and so I would obviously want them to be happy. I do wonder however what happens on Father’s Day and Mother’s Day. This week on Mother’s Day at Elton John’s house, who received the card, Elton or David? Mother’s Day is a sad time for me as I lost my mum twenty four years ago and my twin daughters lost their mother two years ago, As it would also have been my late father’s birthday in the same week, there has been little to celebrate in the Copley household. I am sad to report that my pal, Barry Donald, (Barton Brothers) passed away this week aged seventy one.

LOCAL SUPPORT Wit With... BANDS ROCK OUT AT Weekly ALBERT THIS YEAR’S SANDALL SNODGRASS PARK FAKE FESTIVAL Doncaster music fans are in for a treat this year at Sandall Park Fake Festival on 17th May, as not only is there a brand new tribute band who will be making their Fake Festival debut at Sandall Park, but there is also an incredible line up of local talent showcasing their music prowess. Goodfellas, The 48K’s, The Colliers, White Valentine and Fluidity will be sharing the stage with some of the UK’s best tribute bands, including newcomers, The Bon Jovi Experience, inside the huge marquee at Sandall Park. “Choosing the support bands to perform at Fake Festivals is a long process and not a very easy one,” explains Chris Webster, licence holder for Sandall Park Fake Festival. “We have a rosta of bands that we know are extremely good and very professional, but we always like to look out for new talent too. We don’t just randomly pick a band, but we actually go to gigs to get an idea of how they would perform on our big stage, and also to assess their talent.” “This year we have some old favourites such as Goodfellas and The 48K’s who have been extremely busy since last year’s festival recording and releasing new material. We also have some new bands including The Colliers and Fluidity, so we’d be interested in hearing people’s feedback after the festival.” Doncaster-based Goodfellas are masters of their craft, and that is to deliver hit after hit of covers that you will know instantly. Providing the warm up before the Total Stone Roses take to the stage, they will have the marquee rocking. The 48K’s are certainly no strangers to Doncaster. With a great following, they are regulars on the local gig scene, performing their own songs with catchy lyrics. In April they will be performing alongside Cast lead singer, John Power in Doncaster. The Colliers are another Doncaster band who will be entertaining festival-goers with their own songs and fabulous stage antics. Having just signed a production and management deal with a London label, they have exciting times ahead, so catch them whilst you can. White Valentine are an original four piece band from Doncaster whose mission is to break the mould of the prog rock scene. Influenced by bands such as Kings of Leon, Nickleback and Band of Horses, they have a fabulous sound and are certainly entertaining when on stage. Fluidity have a unique sound described by radio stations as ‘modern alternative indie blues rock’. If you’re not sure what this sounds like, the catch them opening Sandall Park Fake Festival this year. The band is currently writing more material and can be seen across the local gig scene. Don’t forget that if you buy a ticket to Sandall Park Fake Festival, you receive a free ticket with free camping to The Big Fake Festival, the three day event at Thoresby Park from 5th to 7th September, with eighteen of the UK’s best tribute bands. This event is exclusively for Fake Festival fans and tickets cannot be bought separately for this event, so grab your ticket for Sandall Park Fake Festival now. Early bird tickets are already on sale and are £15.00 for an adult, £8.00 for a Young Person (1017 years), and £38.00 for a Family ticket. Under 9’s are free. Fantastic value for a one-day festival, plus free entry and free camping to a huge three day festival too. NUISANCE CALLS ACTION PLAN LAUNCHED The first comprehensive and coordinated effort to tackle nuisance calls has been unveiled today by Culture Secretary Maria Miller.
The Nuisance Calls Action Plan sets out new measures being taken by Government, regulators, consumer groups and industry to tackle nuisance calls. For the first time, the Culture Secretary will consult on lowering the threshold for when action can be taken against firms making nuisance calls. Thousands of people are plagued by nuisance calls each month and the consultation could see the bar significantly reduced making it easier for sanctions to be imposed. Alongside the Action Plan Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has also today unveiled plans to impose fines of hundreds of thousands of pounds on claims management companies which use information gathered by unsolicited calls and texts and other bad practices. Culture Secretary, Maria Miller said: “Nuisance calls must stop. At best they are an irritation and an unwanted intrusion, at worst they cause real distress and fear, particularly to the elderly or housebound. People need to feel safe and secure in their homes. The rules are clear – people have the right to choose not to receive unsolicited marketing calls. We will work to ensure their choice is respected.” The Action Plan brings together Government, regulators, consumer groups and industry in the first ever comprehensive and co-ordinated effort to clamp down on nuisance calls. There continues to be a very substantial number of complaints with 120,310 made between April and November 2013 to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the regulator responsible for unsolicited marketing calls. The Action Plan outlines the action already being taken against the companies responsible for nuisance calls and new measures to help deal with the problem. New measures to tackle the problem include: • Consulting later this year on lowering the threshold for when the ICO can fine companies. Currently calls must cause ‘substantial damage’ or ‘substantial distress’; • Next week regulations will be laid
in Parliament to simplify how Ofcom can share information with the ICO and the Insolvency Service about rogue companies; • The Ministry of Justice will tomorrow launch a consultation on whether regulated companies that breach Claims Management Regulation Unit rules should face fines up to 20 per cent of their annual turnover for offences including using information gathered by unsolicited calls and texts, providing bad services or wasting time and money by making spurious or unsubstantiated claims. This will mean fines of hundreds of thousands of pounds, and potentially millions in some cases. Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said: “It is time to stop these claims companies from plaguing hardworking people’s lives and wasting everyone’s time – the scale of these fines shows just how serious we are about stopping them. The Claims Management Regulator already takes tough action against companies which break the rules, suspending and closing down rogue firms, but now these fines will give us an extra weapon to drive bad behaviour out of the industry.” Richard Lloyd, Which? Executive Director said: “This Action Plan is a victory for the 110,000 people who backed our campaign to call time on the menace of nuisance calls and texts. I’m delighted to be chairing a task force of experts to review how consumers give and withdraw their consent to be contacted. “We now look forward to regulators using their new powers to help stop this growing problem. It’s also important that people continue to report complaints so regulators can crack down on companies who break the rules.” Actions already taken on nuisance calls and rogue claims management companies include: • The Government in 2010 increased the fines Ofcom can issue from £50,000 to £2 million, while in 2011 we enabled the ICO to issue fines up to £500,000; • Fines totalling £2.54 million have been issued by the regulators since January 2012; • Companies persistently breaching the nuisance calls rules are named and shamed by the ICO on their website; • Informal action by the ICO has seen
companies like British Gas and TalkTalk cut the complaints against them by up to 75%; • Simplified and consistent guidance on how to stop marketing calls and how to complain has been published; • A voluntary accreditation scheme for direct marketing companies was launched in October last so firms can show they follow best practice. • Appointing extra enforcement staff to the Claims Management Regulation unit at the Ministry of Justice • Banning claims firms from taking fees from customers before a contract has been signed and naming firms online which are subject to enforcement action or under investigation. Communications Minister Ed Vaizey will continue holding regular meetings with interested parties. Legally, unsolicited live direct marketing calls cannot be made to a number that is registered with the Telephone Preference Service unless the person has agreed to receive calls by that company. All automated recorded marketing message calls require prior consent. These regulations apply to calls made from within the UK or from outside the UK, on behalf of UK companies. Valley DayRider going up by 10p Megarider Xtra, a new way of buying Stagecoach’s popular Megarider ticket on StagecoachSmart offers the passengers the best value travel. Customers receive the same unlimited travel as Megarider as well as the chance to set up automatic, recurring payments which are debited every month. Revenue from fares underpins continued investment in new vehicles for customers. This month, Stagecoach Group announced record orders for £100m new buses and coaches for its operations across the UK. This week Consumer Watchdog Passenger Focus has found that 75 per cent of customers in South Yorkshire are either very or fairly satisfied with the value for money offered by Stagecoach – the highest figures of all bus passengers in the country. The changes also compare favourably with the high cost of motoring. An RAC report in 2013 concluded that motoring costs are the single biggest area
of household expenditure bar none and stated that “the cost of motoring is causing severe financial hardship for many”. Two independent surveys have found that Stagecoach continues to offer the best value bus fares of any major bus operator in the UK, with prices up to 20% lower than other companies. Stagecoach also operates the country’s first and only longterm nationwide discounted bus travel scheme for jobseekers, whereby holders of a Jobcentreplus Travel Discount Card qualify for half-price single and return tickets on Stagecoach’s 6.500 buses in the UK outside London. However, Stagecoach said today that continued rising costs – including labour, energy, fuel and insurance costs – and reduced public sector investment in bus services has resulted in the operator having no choice but to increase some fares.

STAGECOACH ANNOUNCE TICKET PRICE CHANGES Stagecoach Yorkshire announced details on 28 March of changes to a number of ticket prices.
Some fares on Stagecoach’s most popular tickets have been frozen, and while many ticket prices will rise, there are lower increases for regular bus users. The cost of the company’s Sheffield Megarider Bus and Tram four week, 13 week and annual tickets – which are used by the most frequent bus users – along with DayRider and Weekly Megarider versions of the Bus and Tram ticket have been frozen. Regular bus users who purchase the Sheffield Bus Megarider ticket, which is available for use on all Stagecoach bus services in Sheffield, will also benefit from frozen fares for four week, 13 week and annual tickets, but not weekly versions. The DayRider ticket goes up by 20p. Stagecoach’s Sheffield Megarider Plus four, 13 and 52 week tickets are unchanged while the weekly version will
go up by 50p. Optio Day and Week tickets have been withdrawn. Stagecoach’s Barnsley Megarider Plus Ticket will not change, and will continue to offer weekly travel for the equivalent of just £1.71 a day. The West Yorkshire Megarider and Route 22X Megarider ticket prices are also frozen. A number of other fares in South Yorkshire will increase from Sunday 13 April. The cost of a Weekly Megarider Gold ticket will change from £19 to £19.50. This ticket offers bus passengers unlimited travel for seven days on Stagecoach bus and Supertram services in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Gainsborough for the equivalent of just £2.79 a day. Barnsley and Dearne Valley Megarider tickets are also increasing along with the DayRiders with a Barnsley DayRider increasing by 20p and the Dearne

WE’RE CALLING TIME
ON CANCER
20 YEARS ON AND CHANGE IS STILL ‘BREWING’ THANKS TO DEDICATED CANCER CHARITY Twenty years ago cancer treatment in Sheffield looked somewhat different; yet the principles remain the same.
With research suggesting that by 2020 half of the UK population will be affected by cancer at some stage during their lifetime, the need to continually develop and improve cancer treatments at the region’s only specialist cancer hospital is even more crucial than ever before. For some, 1994 seems a lifetime ago; a year when ‘spice mania’ engulfed the nation, the economy was heading towards recovery and the very first UK National Lottery Draw took place. But for Professor Barry Hancock OBE, who was leading Weston Park Hospital’s university department of Clinical Oncology, the year marked an exciting milestone in the formation of a dedicated charity for the hospital and the start of revolutionary things to come. Today, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity exists to support the work of Weston Park Hospital, which is a leading centre for pioneering cancer research, treatment and care that provides vital services for the 60,000 cancer patients in this region. The catchment area for Weston Park Hospital extends across a population of almost 1.8million people from across all of South Yorkshire and the North Midlands with delivery of cancer care where appropriate through district hospitals in Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Chesterfield. Since inauguration, inspired by the first public fundraising campaign, ‘Ear our Appeal’, the Cancer Charity has significantly developed and expanded in response to the growing need for extra special projects within the hospital that fall outside of statutory NHS funding. Looking back, iconic figure, Professor Hancock, who now sits on the trustee board of the Cancer Charity, recalls the headline from all those years ago which read: ‘the icing on the cake of today will become the bread and butter of tomorrow.’ He says: “Considering how far the hospital has advanced in terms of research and treatment options, it wasn’t a bad maxim to go by! “When the first appeal succeeded in raising £1million for a pioneering CT scanner, not only did we achieve precision in pin-pointing radiotherapy treatment, we were spot on for predicting the rapid advances in improving such treatments. “The Cancer Charity has been instrumental in supporting research and new developments in diagnosis, radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments in particular, contributing to the worldwide increase in people surviving the disease.” With continued and increased funding from the charity, Weston Park Hospital has firmly positioned itself as a centre of excellence for cancer research and the diagnosis, treatment and care of those suffering with cancer. In Sheffield alone, the cancer incidence figures are above average with around 2,800 people being diagnosed with cancer each year. From humble beginnings in 1914, when radium was first recognised as a treatment for cancers, to the establishment of the ‘Sheffield National Centre for Radiotherapy’ in 1945, Weston Park
Hospital in its current form was officially opened by HRH Princess Anne in 1971. The changing face of the hospital throughout the years has not only accommodated the expansion of services and options offered to patients, but further cemented the hospital's highly respected reputation across the locally, regionally, nationally and even internationally.. Catherine Anthony has been a familiar figure at Weston Park Hospital for over 30 years, as an employee, volunteer and even as a patient. Having recently retired from her post as Cancer Information Coordinator at the Cancer Charityfunded Cancer Support Centre, Catherine holds very fond memories of the place that not only gave her a career, but ultimately saved her life. “Little did I know when I started working at Weston Park Hospital on the year it was officially opened, what a big impact it would have on my life, both professionally and personally. “Professionally, I have seen firsthand how funds raised by the Cancer Charity are essential to support the hospital in undertaking first-class cancer research and in providing first-class treatment and care to patients.” “Personally, I and close members of my family have and continue to need the expert treatment and support of Weston Park Hospital and the Cancer Support Centre. “I am proud to be associated with Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and the work they support and wish them every success for the next 20 years and beyond!”
YOUR VENUE CAN SIGN UP FOR WPHCC’S AMAZING ‘FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY’ BY DOWNLOADING A FORM FROM OUR WEBSITE AT
MERCURYNEWSPAPER.CO.UK Just one of many projects, the Cancer Charity has to raise over £200,000 every year to enable the continued existence of the Cancer Support Centre, which provides help and advice to anyone affected by cancer. Professor Hancock, who was the first medical oncology appointment in Sheffield continued: “It still rings true to this day that the ground-breaking advances we invest in today, will no doubt result in the life-changing treatments of tomorrow. “Yes, the new figures suggest an increase in cancer incidence, but with more fundraising activity and the generosity of communities and companies across the region, I am confident that we can rise to the challenge.” The Cancer Charity had a record-breaking year in 2013, raising over £2 million for the first time, thanks to its generous supporters. With an increasing need for charitable funding of special projects at the hospital, the charity is setting its stall higher this year as it marks 20 years of fighting cancer locally. Charity Director, Samantha Kennedy says: “It is an exciting time for the charity and I want to personally thank all of our generous supporters; they never fail to amaze us with the lengths they will go to in order to help others. “Although we are still a relatively small team, we hope to make an even bigger impact in the next 20 years by increasing the funding for lifechanging projects at the hospital. “We’ve witnessed some quirky ways of raising money over the years; a 90-year-old skydiver and
an anonymous £10,000 donation dropped through the letterbox, to name but a few. “New for this year, in celebration of this iconic milestone, is our Time for Tea fundraiser that has a simple premise - put the kettle on and host your very own tea party during the month of May, invite friends and colleagues and collect donations to help keep more families affected by cancer together for longer.” Time for Tea is a new fundraising initiative for the charity, sponsored by Stagecoach, which encourages people to join in marking 20 years of fighting cancer locally by hosting their very own tea party whilst raising money. From community groups to family gatherings, Time for Tea provides the perfect excuse to put the kettle on and catch up with friends for a cuppa and cake. A dedicated Facebook event page has been set up for Time for Tea and each fundraiser who registers will receive a fundraising pack to help get them started. Samantha continued: “Whether you’ve supported us previously or not, why not join us this year and raise a cup for neighbours, colleagues, family or friends who are battling cancer right now?” To take part in Time for Tea complete the attached registration form below and return freepost to: FREEPOST RRYZ-EBTY-ELGG Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, Whitham Road, Sheffield S10 2SJ. LICENSING LAWS RELAXED LETTERS FOR THE WORLD CUP LLOYD COLE AT READERS
There’s good news for the region’s pubs and clubs as this week it was announce by the government licensing laws will be relaxed during the World Cup to allow pubs to stay open late during some England matches. Pubs and clubs will be allowed to open until 1am when England matches kick-off at 8pm or later. The British Beer & Pub Association said it was “great news” for pubs across the country that “common sense prevailed”. Licensees are able apply for a one-off late licence at a cost of £21 but the industry says the national rule change will save pubs a total of £738,000. The decision will affect England’s opening game of the World Cup against Italy on Saturday 14 June due to kick off at 11pm, the traditional closing time for many pubs. It will also allow pubs to open late following the country’s match against Uruguay on Thursday June 19 at 8pm UK time.
In its response to the consultation the Home Office said: “The government believes that England playing in the World Cup is an occasion of exceptional national significance. “Many people will wish to enjoy watching the matches in pubs and bars and experience the atmosphere of the occasion with fellow football fans, as demonstrated by the enthusiasm of the majority of those who responded to the consultation. “The government has listened to the views received in response to the consultation and in discussion with partners has decided to proceed with the proposal to relax licensing hours nationally for England’s World Cup matches.” Earlier this year the government rejected a bid from puns and clubs for hours to be extended during some of England’s late matches. The consultation was launched after the Prime Minister called for a rethink. A spokesman for Downing Street said he believe the World Cup was
a “major sporting event” in which there was “significant national interest”. Brigid Simmonds, British Beer and Pub Association chief executive, said: “It’s really great news, which will put pubs at the heart of a great national event. I am particularly pleased that the government has really listened, and made sure that common sense prevailed, granting the full four hours after kick off for England games, as we had asked.” “I’d like to thank the hundreds in the pub trade who responded, making our views loud and clear.” Pubs wishing to stay open late for others matches throughout the tournament will be able to apply for individual licences.
THE CITY HALL
To a near capacity crowd at the City Hall Ballroom, the master of the lyrics strode on stage to polite applause. The audience, mostly comprising of forties and fifties somethings, were warm in their appreciation of a songwriter and singer who has continued to tour and write songs, is an exception to any notion of a comeback. He has always been around since the heady days of the Commotions in the 1980s. For the uninitiated Lloyd Cole’s songs are about love in one form or another with a wordplay which contains cryptic twists of the English Lawrence Whyte language. Who else could include the lyric ‘She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On the Waterfront, She reads Simone De Beauvoir in her American circumstance’ in a song. His set was diverse with standard favourites such as ‘Rattlesnakes’, ‘Are you ready to be Heartbroken?’ and ‘Broken Record’ mixed in
VOICE OF THE HAPPY NIGHTINGALE BRITHDAY TO THE 45RPM RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Telephone 0114 233 7941 • www.sofcltd.co.uk
with new material from his most recent album ‘Standards’ as well as a selection of carefully chosen tracks from albums in between. He was never less than engaging even when he suggested the audience settle down and become less restless. The conversation between songs was brief of nonexistent. This was a professional performance from a seasoned performer. The biggest cheers came from one of his encore songs ‘Forest Fire’ and the top twenty hit ‘Lost Weekend’. But this was Lloyd without the Commotions playing a solo acoustic guitar and giving his songs a different rendition. He was always an artist caught between the sounds of punk and glamour rock and tonight he showed his versatility with his range of material and stage presence. Thanks for a great night Lloyd and come back to South Yorkshire soon.
It’s Hospital Broadcasting Week! The annual event which is launched at the Hospital Broadcasting Associations Annual Conference and Hospital Radio Awards Ceremony, this year held in Bristol. It is an opportunity for hospital radio stations to peel back the ‘smashie & nicie’ stereotype and showcase the work they do providing comfort and support to patients all over the UK. Hospital radio first began back in the 1920’s when broadcasts were only football commentaries. Today, hospital radio provides a much wider entertainment service carrying music (including patients requests), news, local events, community service information etc. but most stations remain loyal to their roots and continue broadcasts from local sporting events. There are over 200 hospital radio stations around the country, each providing their own programmes tailor made to the hospital(s) they serve. Radio Nightingale has been broadcasting to the Rotherham Hospital for over 35 years. Independent from the NHS Trust, the station is run by volunteers who not only produce the programmes but also raise the £30,000 per year needed to keep the station broadcasting. Programmes are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and take in a variety of music genres. Our weekly ‘What’s On Guide’, linked to our online Community Calendar provides an opportunity for local groups to advertise their events. Plus there’s a live relay of the Holy Communion service from the Hospital Chapel every Sunday. Volunteers will be fundraising this Saturday with a collection at the Tanyard Shopping Centre. Plus there’s loads of ways you can help to raise money for Radio Nightingale without spending your own pennies with our online shopping or search engines, or there’s our used stamps and foreign/out-of-circulation coin collections.
MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder
Hope you had a great Mothers day and are getting used to the clocks changing. Talking of things changing, kids these days tend to download music they like from various websites and play the file on so kind portable device or computer. Recently on the breakfast show we spoke about the humble 45 RPM record being 65 years and I asked our listeners to case their minds back to the first record they ever bought and where they bought it from. Remember yours? Getting your pocket money or maybe saving up your wages from a paper round or Saturday job. Heading down to your local record store or in many cases Woolworths and blowing what change you had left on pick n mix. You maybe still have that first record and occasionally look at it, smile and say to yourself ‘eeeeh they were t’days’ The music we play on Magic AM is mainly from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s with the odd newer track coming up, and the great thing is that when certain songs come on they take you right back to that time when they were in the charts. So Happy 65th Birthday 45 RPM record, thanks for being a huge part of our lives and thanks for the memories On the Magic AM breakfast show this week I am giving away tickets to see Susan Boyle at Sheffield City Hall on Wednesday 9th April. Listen at 8:20am tomorrow morning for more info. Hoping you can join me for breakfast weekday mornings on Magic AM from 6 - 10am and across the day on 990, 1305, 1548 AM, Digital Radio and online at magicam.co.uk for just great songs.
FAMILY LINKS TO THE BROWNROYD CLUB CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Some months back, Club Historians received a request from Mr. Harry Barber about the Brownroyd WMC in West Yorkshire. He sent over a lovely old photo of the club’s cricket team, taken around 1906. He believes that one of his relatives is in the picture, Walter or Thomas. Given that the photo is more than a hundred years old, it’s difficult to find out anything. I suggested that Harry should try the local archives if possible but put up an appeal on our website for any relevant information. One reader kindly came back to us. Born in the 1950’s, Paula Cully lived opposite this club in a back-to-back house on Bingley Street, Brownroyd. ‘My dad and granddads, Horace Scott and Percival Harris, were all members of this club although both my granddads died in the late 1950’s.’ Her dad, Derek Harris, was a member from the 1940’s up until the 1990’s and was known as ‘Danny Boy’ within the club circuit. He was the Brownroyd’s Concert Secretary for many years, particularly during the 1960’s and the 1970’s. ‘Most men living on Bingley Street in those days (as well as surrounding areas) would have been members of that club.’ Lovely memories to share even if not directly throwing light on the cricket team photo. Another reader recently added more memories, club entertainer Nicky Newsome, who worked at Brownroyd WMC as a comedian/ vocalist in the early part of his career, probably in the early 70’s. Perhaps Nicky was actually booked by Paula’s dad, ConSec ‘Danny Boy’? Nicky’s own father also sang there many times: he was the tenor Jack Royston, and he sometimes did a double act with Dick Kay. Nicky was in Rock bands from 1962-67, then went solo and professional at the same time, and worked non-stop since then. He’s had ‘a wonderful time in clubland’, also working the big theatre clubs such as Batley Variety club. Now living near Blackpool, Nicky continues to work at clubs, hotels, and dinners, and remains ‘a lad at heart!’ He remembers very well comedy pals now passed on such as Joe Belcher, Peter (Machine gun) Wallace, Frank Carson, Jack Platts, Charlie Williams, Paul Shane, to name a few. Another entertainer and Club Historian contributor Kathleen Duffy also sang at the Brownroyd in her day. So, although nothing specific for Harry about his photo, his enquiry led to some wonderful memories being recorded for Club Historians and Mercury Readers!

SPECIALIST HOTEL OPENS IT’S DOORS FOR THE SEASON Ocean Care is a unique holiday venue near the sea front in Skegness Lincolnshire, specialising in holidays for adults with a learning disability. The owners were all previously Shared Lives Cares, supporting adults with learning disabilities in Northamptonshire. They have worked together to open this remarkable hotel specialising in supported holidays. The hotel can sleep up to twenty seven people, with twelve comfortable bedrooms over two floors. The majority of the bedrooms are double or twin, with two family rooms consisting of a double bed and bunks. The hotel offers a full package including a pick-up service at 45p a mile, 24hour support, day trips and evening entertainment. Your holiday starts on a Saturday with either the hotel staff collecting you from the train/coach station, coming to your home to collect you, or meeting you on your arrival (when you have arranged your own transport). All meals are included and on the first night we have a fish and chip supper at a local restaurant. Breakfast is served around 9am, if people require support/ prompting with personal care that service is available, but if you do require full personal care, an out-side agency can be arranged for you. Carers and family members are also welcomed at a discounted price. After breakfast there are daily excursions, chosen from a large list including a visit to Parrot World, historic castles, making chocolate at the Chocolate Drop factory, sea fronts and lots more. These are usually chosen beforehand but if there is something specific that you want to do let us know in advance and we will make every effort to fit it in. Lunch will also be provided. After your trip you will get back to the hotel around 4-5pm to enable you to relax and change before your home cooked evening meal will be served. You have a choice of meals and specific dietary requirements can be catered for when requested at booking. After your three course evening meal, the bar will be open serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and cocktails. In the evening you will have the choice to spend time in the hotel bar socialising or you might like to go out to see a show, visit a local bar, a walk along the sea front or just chill out watching TV. angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
I’ve had an even better week this week! I thought I’d done reasonably well last time out bagging a trio of decent fish over new baits on test, but this week has been even more fun! I’ve been back to the same small club water hoping for an elusive ‘twenty’ of which there are only a few amongst plenty of decent doubles and upper teens. The water has been closed for a while whilst peg maintenance and fishery management work has been carried out, so I’ve been very keen to take advantage of the fact that the fish haven’t been pressured for some time. Once again, I’ve been using Marukyu Fruit Spice boilies as I’m doing rather well on them at the moment and confidence is everything! An 18mm bottom bait, cut in half and tipped with a 14mm Fruit Spice pop up sees my baits just settle in an upright position on the bottom and allows them to be sucked up without being too different to everything around it. Bait is expensive, so I don’t use much; many anglers have to consider their budget, so I think it unfair to write about angling in such a way that encourages the use of huge amounts of bait that many just simply cannot justify. Having said that, the baits I use are of good quality.....I can never understand why anglers are prepared to spend huge amounts of cash on shiny rods and reels, but are pleased when they buy bait at a couple of pounds per kilo! To me, that is just false economy; buy a quality bait that fish are attracted to and you will catch them...spend the money on bait, not bits! So, I tend to use an awful lot of PVA mesh into which I put three or four boilies or perhaps a few pellets then add a good dollop of liquid glug to complete a tasty morsel for passing fish. One thing I did find out this week; three or four baits in a pva mesh bag leaves a lot of air space, so by pressing the nozzle of my liquid glug bottle tight against the weave and squirting additive inside the mesh, the surface tension keeps the vast majority of it inside the pocket of goodies and allows me to cast it without covering everything behind me! More importantly, as the pva breaks down, my small amount of bait is left sitting quite nicely in a puddle of heavy liquid glug which quickly sends out food signals into the
LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS
surrounding water; ace! After casting to the edge of an island shelf, I settled back to watch both bobbins gently swinging in the breeze. Half an hour later and the right hand bobbin moved towards the alarm as a carp picked up the bait and shot across my other rod; disaster!!! In my right hand, a rod pumping with the tail slaps of a big carp, in my left, the tangled mess of a crossed rod! I had to push the left rod back on the pod, grasp the line and bite through it before untangling it from the other line, then wrap it around my boot to prevent any further problems! A few minutes later and a smashing 23lb mirror lay safely on the mat; result! Having photographed, treated the hookhold and slipped the fish back, I got everything sorted out and quickly returned the baits to the chosen spots. Another hour passed before any further action which eventually saw another mirror weighed at 20lb 4ozs! Two twenties in a short space of time! I managed to miss my next run unfortunately, but was very pleased to land two good fish using a minimum of bait within a few short hours....especially as anglers had failed to catch! Moral of the story this week; a quality bait in the right place is worth far more than shiny sticks, or Carlos Fandango rods and reels on the bank.....so think carefully about where you spend your money!

racing form
Hollow, Nathan’s Pride, Shaneshill, Kayf Blanco, McCabe Creek, Hunters Hoof and Modus.
The principal meeting this week is the three day Aintree showpiece culminating on Saturday with the world’s most spectacular steeplechase – the Grand National. The meeting runs from Thursday to Saturday with all three days being featured on Channel 4. On Saturday it seems likely that the Scoop 6 will comprise the first five races from Aintree and the 3.40 from Lingfield (which would seem to fit in with TV schedules and Aintree races). It is usually quite difficult to find winners at this meeting because Cheltenham form can be turned on its head on this very different track and quite a few that didn’t go to Cheltenham have been saved specifically for this meeting. Also there are some that haven’t run for a few months as they have waited for their optimum conditions. The flat and fast Aintree track provides quite a different test to Cheltenham and generally suits a different type of horse. However, just to complicate things a little more, some Cheltenham winners do come and win again at Aintree. Finally, with many horses holding more than one entry for different races over the three days (there are still 626 entries over the three days with some horses entered up three or even four times) it is not easy to guess which engagements they will take up – so no apologies for mentioning some in more than one race.
Lingfield: 3.40 32Red International Trial Stakes, Listed, 3yo, 1m: This can go to Barley Mow who gets the nod in front of American Hope, Sloane Avenue and Bow Creek.

ROVERS RETURN FROM LEEDS WITH A WIN Rovers included loan signing Lucas Neill at right back for the game at Elland Road, with Mark Duffy dropping to the bench and James Coppinger restored to midfield. Leeds also made one change following their trip to Bournemouth in midweek, Cameron Stewart replacing Noel Hunt in the starting line-up. Rovers kicked off and started the game brightly taking the game to the opposition and spending time in their half. In the 14th minute a miscue by Quinn gave Leeds a corner but Johnstone easily caught it. Midfield play dominated over the next few minutes and the Rovers won a corner following a good move on the right from Coppinger and Keegan. COTTERILL put over the corner kick, Wellens gave it back to him and from just inside the right angle of the penalty area he rifled it into the far top corner of the Leeds net in the 23rd minute. The home team were then sparked into life by this reverse. McCormack took a free kick on the left but it went straight through the crowded penalty area without anybody touching it and out past the far post. As half time loomed a period of ball retention in the Leeds half by Rovers eventually switched play from left to right where Coppinger, in the 46th minute, fed SHARP in the middle. He turned his marker and scooped a left foot effort past the diving Butland. In the third minute of added time, a cross from the Leeds left was met by McCormack on the six yard line. With the crowd cheering a “goal”, Johnstone blocked it with his legs and the ball was put out for a corner followed by a second corner. The whistle went on a terrific half of football from the Rovers, who went in full value for their lead. Leeds made a double substitution for the second half before getting the game underway and went straight on to the attack to win a corner. For the first five minutes the home team put the pressure on Rovers but the defence stood firm. Then, in the 51st minute, a free kick on the Rovers

right caused panic in the Leeds six-yard area as Rovers tried to force the ball past the keeper but it was eventually cleared. Five minutes later and following a Rovers attack Cotterill had a go from 30yards on the left but put wide of the far post. Back came Leeds, who now had the crowd, who had booed them off at half time, urging them on. The noise was deafening as Leeds pressed forward. Then, in the 62nd minute, the decibels rose even higher when a free kick, from the Leeds left touchline, was headed on by Smith in the middle and McCORMACK put it into the net. Leeds followed up with successive corners as they strived for an equaliser. McCormack was at the centre of everything for the home team and Smith was now causing problems in the Rovers defence. In the 67th minute, good work by Coppinger on Rovers right let him put the ball into Sharp but a defender stopped him, the ball ran loose and Coppinger, following up, put over the bar. Leeds continued to put pressure on Rovers and Pearce headed wide following a corner in the 74th minute. Johnstone then saved from McCormack and as time began to run out McCormack fired high and wide from 16yards. Sterling defensive work by the Rovers defence and Johnstone behind them continually frustrated the home team and supporters, whilst the occasional foray into the home half relieved the pressure at the back. A cracking ‘derby’ game came to an end, with the Rovers taking the three points after a terrific display.
THAT WAS FOR THE FANS
Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his sides 2-1 victory against Leeds United. “I’m delighted, it was tough at the end but I thought first half we were outstanding. “We got the ball down, we passed it, we pressed when it was right to do it, we defended well and scored two wonderful goals. “David’s strike was top drawer and the passing and movement for the second goal showed everybody what we are all about. “Second half it was different, you have to give credit to Leeds, they pilled the pressure on us and their fans got right behind them, which is a credit to them, but we defended magnificently to get the three points. “It was fantastic, that win was for the fans, they have travelled with us up and down the country and have been disappointed more often than not, we dedicate that to them.

County Senior League S&HCFA Junior Challenge Cup Semi-Final Treeton Terriers U21’s excellent Junior cup run came to an end at the Semi-final stage, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Byron House 2010. Treeton will now turn their attention to the league, where they trail the leaders Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 by 11 points but have four games spare.
Steve Evans described his side’s performance as fantastic as they overcame Bristol City 2-1 at New York Stadium. James Tavernier hit two stunning goals either side of a fine Wade Elliott goal just after half-time to seal the points for the home side and extend the unbeaten run in to 15 games. “We were fantastic,” Evans said after the game. “We showed all the qualities it takes to beat an excellent side. Steve Cotterill has signed some super players and its evident when you watch them play why they’re up there at the top of the form table. “I think the only concern we had at half-time was why we weren’t 4-0 up after all the chances we’d created and good positions we’d got in.” Tavernier opened the scoring with a fine strike within two minutes and sealed the points with an excellent free-kick but the Millers boss was also keen to praise Elliott’s goal which got the visitors back level. “To be fair they have penetrated us, but the goal is a magnificent strike and we were right behind it and if that had got them a point here today you’d have said that was worthy of getting them one. “We worked extremely hard today but I think there was three good teams out there, us, Bristol City and the officials.”

They were also in action on Saturday, when goals from Joseph Austin and Nathan Morritt gave them a 2-0 win over Millmoor Juniors at Oliver’s Mount. Handsworth now trail Oughtibridge by only six points, with three games in hand. Goals from Adam Stead and Luke Sykes gave Houghton Main a narrow 2-1 win over High Green Villa at Middlecliffe Lane. This time out a Ryan McDonald hat-trick helped them to a 6-1 home win over Millmoor Juniors. Frecheville Played-out their third consecutive draw against Athersley Recreation Reserves on Saturday. They were goalless last week, but this time they drew 4-4 in a thriller at Frecheville Sports & Social Club. Division One Braces from Tom Adams and Mitch Wiltshire gave Silkstone United a 4-3 win over league leaders Joker FC. It is the second win Silkstone have had over the leaders in successive weeks. Wickersley cut Joker’s lead at the top to only seven points (with two games in hand). They were 2-0 winners at home to South Kirkby Colliery, thanks to goals from Matthew Longley and Ben Thornton. Jubilee Sorts also kept up the pressure on the frontrunners, with a 3-2 away win over Rotherham Town. Danny Barnsley starred for Jubilee, scoring twice. Jubilee are now in third place, just eight points off the pace with four games spare. Oliver Woodhead scored twice to inspire Sheffield Athletic to a 3-2 win over second-bottom Sheffield Bankers at Warminster Road. Bottom-of-the-league Davy FC slipped to their eight loss in their last nine league games, as they were beaten 4-3 by Hallam Reserves at Sandygate. The win was only Hallam’s second since November in the league. Scott Hartley scored four times to help Millmoor Juniors Reserves to a 7-2 home win over Thorncliffe. Neil Brown (2) and Ben Jordan were also on target for Millmoor who are unbeaten in six league games. Division Two Carey-Joe Welford hit a hat-trick for league leaders North Gawber Colliery, as they maintained their six point lead. Their 4-1 away win on Saturday against Kiveton Park stretches their unbeaten league run to 11 matches. Kingstone United are still on North Gawber’s coat-tails, following the 5-1 defeat of Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves at Park Road on Saturday. Kingstone sit six points off the pace, but have a game spare. Worsbrough Bridge were also in action midweek, when they beat Frecheville Reserves 4-0 at Park Road. AFC Dronfield registered their third win in their last four league matches, with a 2-0 over Sheffield Lane Top at the Civi Service Ground. Dronfield remain in third place. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 WATFORD END OWLS RUN OF GOOD HOME FORM SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk It was a disappointing afternoon for the Owls at Hillsborough as they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Watford. The Hornets took an early lead through Gabriele Angella, who pounced in the area following an initial save from Chris Kirkland to deny Troy Deeney. But it was Watford’s pace on the counter that presented the biggest problem for Wednesday and it was via this route that the Hornet’s second goal arrived. Lewis McGugan finished calmly with a header from six yards after some impressive build-up play before the visitors put the game to bed shortly after the restart. Deeney struck twice within a minute after the resumption to wrap up the points with Benik Afobe’s bullet header in front of the Kop serving only as a consolation. Watford were out to arrest their poor run away from Vicarage Road that had seen the club go without a win on their travels since early October. And to that end, the visitors were off to the ideal start inside five minutes. Ikechi Anya lofted a high free kick over the top which Deeney nodded low on target but as Kirkland made the save, Angella was on hand from six yards to flick into the net.
The goal brought a good response from Wednesday as Liam Palmer flashed a half volley just past the post before the Owls engineered a good chance to level on 15 minutes. Joe Mattock arrowed a low ball into the area for Chris Maguire to pull the trigger from 18 yards but Watford had men back to block the strike. Watford looked a threat with their counter attacking pace and thus doubled their lead just past the 20-minute mark. Daniel Pudil raced down the left and cut back in the area for McGugan to head delicately into the bottom corner. In a bid to halve the arrears, Afobe took aim from 30 yards and drew a smart save from his former Arsenal team mate Manuel Almunia. If Wednesday had a mountain to climb at half time, it became even steeper five minutes after the restart when Watford effectively put the game to bed with a Deeney double. The Hornets hitman sprung the offiside trap and applied a cool finish to roll the ball into the net and the same man doubled his personal tally a minute
later. After a mad scramble in the Owls’ 18yard box, Deeney hit the post, saw his rebound shot saved by Kirkland before finally blasting home from close range. Wednesday gained a glimmer of hope in a lively opening to the second period when Afobe placed his bullet header from Palmer’s centre into the bottom corner. In truth, though, Watford’s lead never really seemed at threat despite Wednesday’s late pressure. Leon Best couldn’t quite get the purchase in the area from a Mattock delivery and Oguchi Onyewu glanced onto the crossbar. Kieran Lee went close at the death from a give and go with Maguire, giving the midfielder space in the area but Almunia wasn’t to be beaten and Watford ran out comfortable winners. Owls: Kirkland, Buxton, Loovens, Onyewu, Mattock, Lee, Palmer, Maguire (Nuhiu 64), Helan (Lavery 73), Best, Afobe (J Johnson 78)

BAD DAY OWLS FIXTURES 2013/14 SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Owls coach John Deehan reflected on the disappointing defeat to Watford on Saturday and acceded to the fact is was a ‘bad day at the office’ for the hosts. Wednesday were 2-0 down midway through the first half and the visitors promptly doubled their lead five minutes into the second period. The Owls pulled one back through Benik Afobe but it was too little too late and the Hornets emerged comfortable winners. Deehan said: “We were disappointing today, there’s no doubt about that, and it was a bad day at the office for us. “The annoying thing is that we have kept six clean sheets since Christmas here and looked solid from set pieces but we have conceded four goals and the first goal was a set piece. “They scored again to make it 2-0 and it was vital from our point of view to get the next goal. “But they scored twice again in quick succession after half time and there was no real going back. “We had a lot of possession, though, against a good side who had players from Serie A in Italy out there. “I would say in terms of counter attacking, Watford are the best side in the division.” Deehan dismissed any theories that the absence of head coach Stuart Gray was a factor in the S6 reverse. He added: “I don’t think so. You would have to ask the players. But the preparation was exactly the same as always. “Stuart coached the team, he selected the team, nothing changed in that respect. “We lost out to a better team on the day. “We have a big game on Friday now against Leicester and we will be begin preparations straight away.”

The Arsenal striker made a return to the starting XI on Saturday and scored a consolation goal in Wednesday’s defeat to Watford. But having been given the chance to impress with the Owls, Afobe’s aim to repay the faith shown by head coach Stuart Gray and said: “Hopefully I have done enough to earn a start on Friday at Leicester and that will be a real challenge. “I had the chance to impress on Saturday and I think I did well but we lost the game so we have to focus on Leicester. “I’m not the first footballer to be frustrated at being on the bench but as an attacker, there’s always a chance you could get on and try and change the game. “But as I said, we have to focus on Leicester now and be at our best. They look like they will be champions but before I came here, I know Wednesday beat them 2-1 here so we know they are beatable.” While Afobe is uncertain as to what his future may hold, the Arsenal youngster is more interested in the short term and giving everything he has at Hillsborough. But one thing that is for sure, the 21-yearold is thoroughly enjoying every minute with Wednesday and explained: “It’s been very easy to settle in from day one. The boys have been good to me. The gaffer, the coaching staff and the fans have all taken to me so it has been pretty easy. “My main aim when I got injured was to get fit and go out on loan in January or February, as I have done, and play as many games as I can. “I’ll return to Arsenal in pre-season and sit down with the boss and see where I can go from there.”

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14 LATE GOAL BLUNTS THE BLADES AT SWINDON MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk A very late goal cost United on the road at Swindon Town. Michael Doyle cancelled out Miles Storey’s first half goal and the Blades were the better side in the second half before getting stung with a sucker-punch from Louis Thompson. United were good value to get something out of a second long trip of the week but in the end saw the six match unbeaten away record come to an end. Like midweek, chief Clough made three changes. Flynn, Scougall and Baxter all returned after being rested at Crawley. Maguire missed out due to suspension, an accumulation of yellow cards, whilst Porter and McGinn dropped to the bench. After a delayed kick-off due to an accident close to the County Ground, it was quickly evident that Brayford was the auxiliary central defender, lining up alongside Collins - Davies slotted in at right-back and Freeman continued at left-back. In a slow start, Swindon’s Michael Smith was the most prominent player of the opening ten minutes. He had a shot blocked by Freeman early on and then was twice denied in the air by Collins as he looked to give the home side a boost. United’s only effort of note in the early exchanges was Brayford firing over after a corner had been half-cleared before Swindon opened the scoring on 18 minutes. Michael Smith was again involved, this time playing through the defence for STOREY to latch on and beat Howard with a shot into the top corner.
Despite having plenty of possession, United were struggling to test goalkeeper Foderingham and just after the half hour the visitors were forced into a change when Baxter hobbled off - Porter was the replacement. Foderingham was then tested twice inside the space of a minute following two setpieces, delivered by Davies. The first, on 36 minutes, was a free-kick which Coady met but the goalkeeper pushed away and from the resulting corner Brayford lost his man but again the custodian was ideally placed deflect clear. Collins headed over another Davies free-kick as half-time approached but the Blades were unable to get back on level terms before the interval and continued to force Swindon back in the early stages of the second period, which resulted in the home side picking up a couple of bookings. Swindon almost hit the Blades on the break on 56 minutes, a slip gave Michael Smith space but he pulled his shot wide and the visitors took advantage, levelling with the next move. Murphy and Freeman combined on the left before Scougall played across the box for DOYLE to arrive late in the box and tap in at the back post. It was Scougall’s last contribution as he was replaced by McGinn moments later. Porter headed over a Davies corner as
the final 15 minutes approached, the Blades looking the more dangerous and there was an appeal for a penalty turned away when Freeman went down under a Archibald-Henville challenge A half-volley from Doyle on 82 minutes, which could not have been far wide of the top corner, emphasised the fact that United were on top and Porter almost got on the end of a McGinn pass but Foderingham was quickly off his line. There was a moment of confusion on 88 minutes when Flynn was fouled as he put the ball through to Porter who finished neatly. However, the striker was adjudged to be offside and referee Hill pulled back the action and handed United a free-kick, which Davies blasted into the wall. After that Foderingham produced a tremendous reaction save from Coady following Porter’s cross, before disaster struck. The Blades wanted to win and were committing players to the attack but on the break a number of red shirts descended on the United goal and Louis THOMPSON’s shot squirmed away from Howard and the spin managed to carry the ball over the line. Five minutes of added time gave United hope. Davies was booked and Paynter was introduced but Swindon survived to collect the points after Foderingham collected a Collins header.

CLOUGH HONEST ABOUT LOSS MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk
Nigel Clough was brutally honest in his assessment of Saturday’s fixture at Swindon Town. A last minute goal from Louis Thompson saw the Blades slip to a 2-1 defeat. Miles Storey gave Swindon a first half lead only for Michael Doyle to level as the Blades dominated the second half. United had the ball in the back of the net late on but the effort was disallowed and the visitors had a number of penalty shouts before Thompson won it. Afterwards, Clough said: “There was an awful lot wrong in the first half, it appeared like a pre-season game to us. Travelling could be a factor, we’ve had a couple of long trips, but it played into the hands of Swindon, who operate at a slow tempo. “We asked for a response at half-time, to play as we have done recently with energy, tempo, content and aggression. We have no problems with the second half but you cannot waste a half, not at this stage of the season. “If we had played like we did in the second half in the first we would have won the game comfortably. “We had a couple of great chances late on and then moments later the ball is in our net, we shouldn’t have been broken down that easily, a number of senior players should have done a lot better.” Of the penalty incidents, the Blades chief added: “We think we should have had six penalties in the last three matches. “There were three at Swindon, Brayford was dragged down in the first half, Porter in the second and then Freeman is bundled over again. “The referee is looking at every one of them - we thought there were some staggering decisions.”
