HALF MARATHON INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED Organisers of the Sheffield Half Marathon have started a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of the 2014 event. The investigation will carefully examine all the key issues, including lack of water delivery, which informed the committee’s decision to cancel the race. The race organisers will also be looking into the communication at the start line which appeared to leave some runners completing the race unaware that it had been cancelled. However every effort will be made to ensure that the event’s

10 official charities still benefit from the thousands of pounds raised by runners’ fundraising. Margaret Lilley, chairperson of the organising committee, said: “Our internal investigation into the situation will specifically focus on the circumstances which contributed to our suppliers failing to deliver the water bowsers as expected. “The requirements for an official race dictate that there is an appropriate amount of water available at every three mile interval on the course. “At previous events we have always

taken delivery of the water on the morning of the race and our suppliers have proven very reliable in this respect. However, this was not the case for the 2014 event and ultimately it was the key factor informing our decision to cancel the race. “To compound the situation it appears that many runners did not fully hear the announcement we made at the start line cancelling the event. As a result many of the participants proceeded to run the course. So, once they had set off, our number one priority was to ensure their safety along the length of the

route. “We are extremely grateful to runners for the patience they have shown so far. Indeed as part of our investigation, we will take on board any comments and questions we receive. “The outcome and findings from our investigation will be made publicly available in due course. “After many months of planning and hard work by our team of volunteers to put on an event with the ultimate aim of raising vital funds for local charities, it was incredibly disappointing to cancel the event. “In the 33 years of running the event, we have brought significant

financial benefit to the local economy and businesses by increasing the footfall of people into Sheffield for this popular event. “Once again, we apologise to all the runners, their families and friends and anyone else who has supported the event. We are committed to carrying out a thorough and comprehensive investigation examining all the key issues including water delivery, communications issues and refunds for runners.” Recorded chip times for the run are available from www. sheffieldmarathon.com

Copley’s Column

I am saddened to report of the passing of top comedienne Jill Alex, who was a regular member of our celebrity breakfast club and also a valued friend. Jill was a devoted partner of Keith and mum to John Alex, one of my favourite entertainers. My deepest sympathy goes out to Keith, John, his wife Jenny and her grandchildren. The great sense of my own personal loss helps me to quantify the grief felt by her nearest and dearest. Rest in peace beautiful lady. It was lovely to see a tribute to Jill on facebook with the video where she appeared in an episode of the Wheeltapper’s and Shunter’s Club alongside Colin Crompton, Bernard Manning, P.J.Proby and pianist Russ Conway. A surprise guest at breakfast this week was a delightful lady, Gladys Smith, (pictured) who was a hundred years young. Gladys, from Marsh Lane, Eckington was one of nine children. Her working life involved being a dinner lady, and running a pensioner’s club. Her hundredth birthday was celebrated at Apperknowle Community Centre, which she and her late husband helped to build, with over a hundred people attending. I had a conversation with her, when she told me of her message from the queen, and I was happy to observe that she had all her faculties. We generally have a few people up to sing on Thursday’s after breakfast and our weekly quiz with resident quizmaster, comedian Bobby Dennis, and the lovely Gladys gave a great rendition of the comedic song ‘My Brother Sylvest’. What a joy it was to witness this wonderful centenarian obviously enjoying herself. The celebrations continued for her when she was the guest of Nick Johnson and Chesterfield football club for the home game on Saturday. Saturday has always a day which I spend either watching or listening to the football commentary on Radio Sheffield. However, at one o’clock,

before the football starts I never fail to tune in to the funniest hour on the radio, ‘Liveish’ which consists of the funniest man I know, Bernie Clifton, with a couple of guests and a studio audience. I strongly recommend you to listen to this show. Bernie is a regular member of our breakfast club and has us all in stitches every week. Regrettably, Chesterfield Football Club failed to beat Peterborough in the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against Peterborough. They can now concentrate on securing promotion as can local team of the season Rotherham United, who by winning this week, have guaranteed a minimum of a play-off place with an outside chance of automatic promotion to the championship. Good luck to Sheffield United in their F.A Cup semi final game at Wembley against Hull City.

I was going to write a joke about procrastination. But I’ll probably do it tomorrow instead. FINISHING TOUCHES FOR MAJOR SPITAL HILL REVAMP

The finishing touches are being made to the refurbishment of an important gateway into Sheffield city centre. Major works are almost complete on the busy Spital Hill shopping centre. New paving, lighting and street furniture will help to create a vibrant new feel to the district centre. The finished street will also have eye-catching artworks at Caborn’s Corner and outside Vestry Hall. Ellesmere Green has seen an exciting remodelling to help make it the focal point of the area, with a new event space, seating walls and flower borders as well as improved paths and lighting. Public art designed by children from Pye Bank Church of England Primary School, St. Catherine’s Catholic Primary School and Firs Hill Community Primary School has also been added to enhance the area. A new ‘community hub’ will become the heart of the local community at Sorby House. This will bring together several Council, community and partner services for the people of Burngreave. Sorby House with the new FirstPoint@Burngreave will be open Mondays to Fridays and the re-located Burngreave Library will also open there on weekdays and Saturdays too. The improvements will continue with a shop front improvement scheme that is currently being planned, with the hope of beginning work in autumn 2014. This scheme will offer cosmetic facelifts to the frontages of every independent business on Spital Hill district centre. To celebrate the refurbishment and help formally open the refurbished Ellesmere Green, the first International Spital Hill Street Market will be held on Sunday 22 June.

and see it as the start of a very positive movement. From April 2016 it will be compulsory for each and every dog in England to be microchipped on first change of hands which represents a significant step forward for dog welfare and responsible dog ownership. To show its support for the implementation of this legislation, Dogs Trust is teaming up with vets to make sure that all dog owners can have the procedure done for free. We’d like to say a huge thank you to the vet practices already supporting the campaign and urge others to come on board. An essential element to the success of microchipping is for dog owners to take responsibility for updating their details with the database should their circumstances change.”

With microchipping set to be made compulsory for all dogs in England in April 2016 – and with an estimated 20% of dogs in the UK still unchipped - demand for the procedure is likely to be significant over the coming year according to Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity. As a result, the charity has launched the Free Microchipping Through Vets Campaign to offer all owners the opportunity to microchip their dog free of charge through vet practices. SHARED LIVES CARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE The first ever large scale report into Shared Lives care in England has shown how almost 10,000 disabled and vulnerable adults are enjoying improved lives as a result of living in Shared Lives arrangements. Shared Lives is a radical form of care that centres on sharing home, family and community life, in supporting older and disabled adults to lead fulfilling and active lives. Uniquely, it enables people from all kinds of backgrounds to draw on their families, friends and neighbours in supporting some of our most isolated and vulnerable citizens, using the Shared Lives carer’s own family home. The independent countrywide study has calculated that 9660 people are currently* being supported in Shared Lives arrangements in England. Many have been shown to be enjoy more fulfilling lives as a result of Shared Lives, with over 90% making new friends as a result, half going on holiday for the first time, and over a quarter of users joining a club not exclusively for disabled people for the first time in their lives.” Shared Lives has also been independently proven to provide significant savings compared with traditional forms of adult care – and the report estimates that if every region in England were to catch up with same the level of Shared Lives provision as the highest performing area, then savings of £150m per year could be realised.

CENTRAL VISION LOSS DOES THIS AFFECT YOU? Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the commonest cause of sight loss in people over 60. It causes the loss of your central vision, so seeing details such as people’s faces, photographs or reading the newspaper becomes much more difficult. So if you have been told that you have AMD you’ll probably find it useful to get in touch with the Sheffield Macular Group. We are a well-established, social, self help and support group. We provide the chance to meet others living with macular degeneration and to share useful information about resources available which can help to make life easier for people who are visually impaired. We meet on the first Thursday of most months from 1.30 – 3.30 p.m. in the Café, Central United Reformed Church, Chapel Walk, Norfolk Street S1 2JB. Our speaker on May 1st will be Paul Blomfield MP – his talk will not be party political. On June 5th we shall welcome Mr Acharya from the Eye Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. For more information phone Robin on 0114 236 2251 or Christine on 0114 266 5473. Or come along on the first Thursday of the month (not August or January). Sheffield Macular Group is a branch of the Macular Society, reg charity number 1001198

Alex Fox, Chief Executive of Shared Lives Plus said: “This report is the first ever nationwide analysis of the Shared Lives sector in England – showing how Shared Lives helps people who in some cases have been seen as ‘too challenging’ to live better lives, whilst providing major savings for taxpayers. It also shows how the sector is growing across the country, with 90% of schemes looking to recruit new Shared Lives carers, and many others expanding the Shared Lives model to provide support for other groups such as Older People. This study shows the potential for Shared Lives to transform not just the lives of individuals, but also help transform our Adult Social care system by delivering major savings and improved benefits, at a time when an ageing population and falling budgets are presenting the NHS and local authorities with a uniquely difficult challenge” The report was commissioned by Shared Lives Plus and based on research carried out by academics at Worcester University. Shared Lives Plus recently received government and Big Lottery funding support to double the size of Shared Lives in England – and the study illustrates the potential for growth in the sector, and the savings that could be achieved if best practice is followed across the country. It is clear from the report that although Shared Lives reaches 10,000 people, the vast majority of the public, and even

many professionals, have never heard of it. It illustrates how there are Shared Lives schemes in almost every local authority area in England – but there are significant variations in size and scale. If areas with small or low provision were to catch up with those areas with larger provision then nationally, savings of £150m could be made. Shared Lives Plus is the UK network of family-based or very small scale care, support and inclusion approaches for disabled or older people. Our membership of 4,800 includes Shared Lives carers and local Shared Lives schemes. In Shared Lives, an adult (and in some cases 16 or 17 year old) who needs support and/or accommodation moves in with or regularly visits an approved Shared Lives carer, after they have been matched for compatibility. Together, they share family and community life. In many cases the individual becomes a settled part of a supportive family, although Shared Lives is also used as day support, as breaks for unpaid family carers, as home from hospital care and as a stepping stone for someone to get their own place. Shared Lives schemes are regulated by the government’s social care inspectors, the Care Quality Commission, who in 2010 rated Shared Lives as being twice as likely to be ‘excellent’ as all other forms of regulated care. Figures from care inspectors suggest it has perhaps the best safeguarding record in social care. www.sharedlivesplus.org.uk

A home support service is set to be picked up by a range of independent providers as part of wider programme of change across adult social care at Sheffield City Council. The Council currently provides an in-house Complex Needs Home Care service of support to adults who have a diagnosis of chronic and enduring mental health issues as part of its adult social care services. It also provides support for adults who, for example, may be vulnerable; at risk of being abused, or have complex health and care needs, such as people who have been diagnosed with a long term health condition or who have extensive care needs that involve other professionals. But a review of the current service has shown it does not give value for money so the council is instead going to transfer this service to the independent sector.

Councillor Mary Lea, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Care and Independent Living said: “At a time when there are enormous pressures on our budget we need to make sure that what we are spending is being spent wisely. We need to make sure people with the most complex needs are getting the best help while still making sure we are getting value for money. A review has shown that the current inhouse system is too expensive and care and support services can be delivered equally well and at lower cost by external providers instead. But I want to reassure people they will continue to receive the same standard of care as before. We are reviewing everything to make sure the funding available is used fairly and consistently for people who are most in need of care and support, and this move is part of those changes.”

HATS OFF TO SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S UNIVERSITY ‘GRADUATES’

Sheffield children and young people have shown they are a class act by completing one million hours of learning activities out of school. More than 23,000 children and young people, aged four to 19 from across the city, have taken up the opportunity to carry on learning in their own time by taking part in the Sheffield Children’s University – one of the largest established Children’s Universities in the country. This significant achievement for members of Sheffield Children’s University equates to 41,666 days or 115 years of fun and exciting learning. Sheffield Children’s University is part of a national initiative encouraging and celebrating Sheffield children and young people who take part in a wide range of inspiring learning opportunities outside school hours at specific schools and other registered activity providers. For every hour of sport, dance, arts and other activities they take part in through Sheffield Children’s University, they earn one credit. Gaining enough credits leads to being presented with award certificates and badges (bronze for 30 hours, silver for 65 and gold for 100) at special ceremonies. One hundred schools and 100 other activity providers such as museums, martial arts groups, Forest Schools, Scouts and Brownies along with thousands of parents and carers offer Sheffield Children’s University activities have supported the achievement of one million Children’s University hours. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a great way for children and young people to be rewarded for the things they love to do out of school. There’s a great number of activities on offer – everything from cookery, music, dance, chess and archaeology to rocket science! There’s something to interest every child and every hour they have spent at ‘university’ has been recorded, awarded and celebrated. “We know that this has a really positive effect on what the ‘graduates’ go on to achieve. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to any parents and carers out there whose children aren’t already involved. “Reaching a million hours is a tremendous achievement. Many thanks to all those involved in encouraging and supporting children and young people in this wonderful initiative and congratulations to all the ‘graduates’ involved.” Debra Thackeray, Extended Schools Coordinator from Firth Park Academy, which is where the millionth hour was clocked up, added: “We see a real difference in the confidence of kids who take part in the Children’s University that they get from coming along, meeting new friends and trying new things. It does them the world of good.” Research shows that children who take part in Sheffield Children’s University activities perform better at school than children who do not take part. Sheffield Children’s University participants also exceed their expected results. This Easter there are Sheffield Children’s University activities available, including a ‘Young Curators’ programme at Museums Sheffield where children will experience what it means to be a curator in a museum (on 16 and 23 April). For details of all the events this Easter, visit the Sheffield Children’s University website at www.sheffield.gov.uk/cu. If you would like your child to become part of Sheffield Children’s University, you can watch their YouTube video, available at: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=wKZJRpdEYJ8. The team can also be contacted by email at cu@sheffield.gov.uk or by telephone 0114 203 9134. Alternatively visit: www.sheffield.gov.uk/cu. In Association with the WMCIU

WE’RE CALLING TIME

RUN IN THE PARK TO MARK 20 YEARS OF FIGHTING CANCER LOCALLY

Entries are now open for both the 10k race and 3k family fun run, which will raise vital funds for the Cancer Charity, as it celebrates its 20th anniversary and marks twenty years of fighting cancer locally. The popular event, which last year saw over 900 runners take part, welcomes runners of all abilities and encourages those taking part to raise much-needed sponsorship for the charity. Last year’s event was a ‘sprinting success’, raising an impressive £40,000 thanks to the support of those taking part, their generous sponsors and charity volunteers. Lucy Cahill, from Owlthorpe, took part in the race last year, and has already signed up for this year’s run, in the hope of raising more money for the Cancer Charity in memory of her father, Gary. She said: “It was absolutely horrendous losing my dad so suddenly to cancer, he was an amazing man. “Last year over 60 of his friends and family came together to run in his memory, raising an unbelievable £3,207.06 - and we’re doing it all again this year. “It’s a great event and a fitting way to remember loved ones whilst raising

money so that cancer patients can look forward to a brighter future.” Sarah Butler (26) has also signed up for ‘Run in the Park’ to say thank you to the hospital for giving her mum such good care. In 2010, Sarah’s mum, Sue Payne (53), was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Weston Park Hospital. Sarah, who works as an Equine Nutritional Specialist & Office Manager for Sheffield based company, Blue Chip Feed Ltd, said: “It was a really tough time for us all when my mum was diagnosed, but we stuck together and battled through, managing to make light of such a difficult and upsetting situation.” Sue opted to have a second mastectomy after her course of treatment and ever since the family has rallied together in support of the hospital’s only dedicated charity. Sarah, who has taken part in the event twice already, once in 2012 and then again with her sister in 2013, plans to complete the race again this year and hopes to achieve a personal best time. She continued: “My sister had never been a fan of running, so to be able to run alongside her last year whilst raising money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity was absolutely fantastic. “I’ll be drumming up lots of sponsorship in the next few months from friends, family and work colleagues, to say huge thanks for the support and treatment my mum received; we will never forget it.” To encourage people to take part, the Cancer Charity has released a quirky video clip featuring patients and staff from the hospital nominating the people of the region to participate, which can be viewed online at wphcc.org. uk/nominate. “There is always such a fantastic atmosphere at Run in the Park” says Sarah. “It’s incredibly touching knowing that so many of the runners and supporters on the day have been helped by the hospital at some stage in their lives.” Fitness fanatic Sarah,

who also works as a personal trainer for Prime Mover, is also running the Yorkshire Marathon later this year with the hope of raising money for several charities. Helen Gentle, Fundraising Manager at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, said: “We’re so grateful to Sarah for choosing to enter Run in the Park again and help us raise as much money as possible for the cancer patients in our region. “This year is a very special year for the charity as we celebrate our 20th birthday and we hope that Run in the Park will be even bigger and better than ever so that we are able to continue funding vital projects within the hospital for many more years to come.” The charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to fund a wide range of projects that will keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment.

Reader Review Crookes Folk Club Princess Royal Slinn Street, Crookes There is something curiously magical about the English Folk Club. I am not sure whether it is the politeness of the atmosphere, the mutual appreciation between muscians and audience, the historical significance of some of the songs or the diversity of material you hear. Perhaps it is all of these. Whenever I go to a Folk Club it is like entering a familiar world that does not seem to have changed for decades. Indeed anyone who has seen the latest Coen Brother's film 'Inside Llewyn Davies' might be mistaken for thinking they had been transported into 1960's Greenwich Village when I entered the room. It was small, dark, cramped and quiet. Even before I entered the room I was greeted by the inevitable sign on the door

VOICE OF THE IT COMES NIGHTINGALE TO US ALL EVENTUALLY RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This weekend was the first of our outdoor summer collections and the weather almost held off for the whole shift, just a short shower on the brave collectors just before the end. Our site was the Tanyard Shopping Centre in Wickersley and it was a busy day for shoppers. Altogether we collected £136.09 which will go towards the cost of keeping the station on the air. Thank you to our volunteers who made the effort this weekend and most of all thank you to the shoppers who dug deep and gave their loose change to a small local charity that relies on such generosity. We’ve got more collections already booked and would like to add some extra dates at other venues around Rotherham. To do this we need people to help out with the collections, would you be able to spare a couple of hours to help occasionally? There’s no obligation to commit to every collection or other work around the station, although we do have vacancies in the team at the moment if you’re interested. If you can help please get in touch on 01709 304244 or email to admin@radionightingale.org.uk Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of Rotherham Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk

Telephone 0114 233 7941 • www.sofcltd.co.uk

'Please wait until the end of the song before entering'. Such respect for the performer is admirable in this day and age. The music ranged from traditional, unaccompanied songs to modern interpretations accompanied by the acoustic guitar. Don't tell them here that Dylan has gone electric! The selection of songs, which were performed with passion and skill, ranged from June Tabor, the Beatles and Chris Wood. No one headlines at a Folk Club, all artists are equal and each is listened to by an appreciative audience. Sometimes we sing along. We should celebrate the heritage of Folk music culture. There is a rich tradition of song and dance in this country. These days it has been modernised and there are some artisits who cross-over into other musical genres. The English Folk Club stands as a living embodiment to our historical roots of musical tradition. If you are going to pay a visit to one, the Crookes Folk Club which meets weekly on a Thursday in the upstairs room of the Princess Royal pub, offers an enjoyable night out and a glimpse into another world.

MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder

Only this last week I was faced with what some might call a ‘senior moment’. I’m sure we all get them from time to time. The thing for me is why on earth do we turn the sound down on the radio when looking for an address or even weirder turn the radio completely off when trying to park the car? On the Magic AM Show I asked our listeners to finish off the sentence ‘You know you’re getting old when...?’ The responses were hilarious. ‘You go upstairs and forget what you went upstairs for’, ‘You can’t find your glassses and realise they are on your head’, ‘You find yourself saying ‘they don’t make music like they used to’, ‘When dialing long distance wears you out’. We all tend to find ourselves doing these things at times I’m sure, but hopefully on reflection it brings a smile to your face. Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter This month on Magic AM we are giving you the chance to go Digital. You can win a Digital Radio every day throughout April. I’ll play a song just after 8am each morning, we will play it again at some point through the day, when we do call in and win a Bush Digital Radio if you are on the correct line. If you want more info go to www.magicam.co.uk Hoping you can join me for breakfast weekday mornings on Magic AM from 6 - 10am and across the day. Listen on 990, 1305, 1548 AM, Digital Radio and online at magicam.co.uk for just great songs.

AN ‘OLD TIMER’ STILL SINGING LOUD AND CLEAR! CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Club Historians are pleased to hear that Dame Vera Lynn, who recently turned 97, is bringing out a new album. A veritable ‘old-timer’, Dame Vera still knows how to keep her international audience entertained. Perhaps best known for war-time songs ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and ‘The White Cliffs Of Dover’, our ‘national treasure’ is interesting in many ways, not just for the impressive length and breadth of her career. Dame Vera was one of many thousands who started their careers at a tender age in a working men’s club. Born Vera Welch, she gave her first public performance aged seven, at the East Ham WMC. Her uncle was a semi-professional comic and her dad chaired the variety shows there at weekends ‘If you were clubby people, as our family was, it was a way of life. Every weekend you was in the club.’ Young Vera was familiar with songs popular with club audiences. This first club performance went down so well her mother was encouraged to get other bookings. Vera and her mum usually travelled by bus or tram most weekends to concerts. ‘Where there was a working men’s club, you bet I sang in it!’ She received seven shilling and six pence for singing three songs with a bit more for an encore. Her family welcomed this extra money. The 1920s was a tough era to be growing up in, with her father in and out of work, like many others at the time. After a lifetime of success, Dame Vera became the oldest person to reach number 1 in the UK album charts at the age of 92. Her Greatest Hits outsold even the Beatles classics when released in late 2009. ‘It was a shock,’ she declared at the time. ‘I didn’t think I’d still be around, never mind have another number one hit.’ Her new album, ‘Vera Lynn: National Treasure - The Ultimate Collection,’ is released on June 2nd to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landing. It features both some old favourites, plus a selection of previously unreleased recordings. Dame Vera thinks it’s ‘wonderful that my songs are still enjoyed, especially if it encourages people to commemorate what happened 70 years ago. It’s moving for me to relive those days.’ Who’d have thought that a seven year old girl singing popular songs in an East End WMC would go on to be so popular and well-loved, right up to this day?

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

l i a R y b Compass ours JOIN BRITAIN’S LEADING RAIL EXCURSION ORGANISER

for a day to remember!

SATURDAY 17TH MAY “THE CUMBRIAN MOORLANDER” To CARLISLE including a run over the scenic, world famous “Settle & Carlisle Railway”

I thought I’d done well last week landed a brace of big carp at 20lb 4oz and 23lb, but I’ve had a better week this week with a real surprise! This just keep getting better and better! These new pellets which I’ve had on trial for just three weeks have been a revelation; whether I’ve just been lucky or not I don’t know, but they say that confidence is everything...well I’ve certainly got confidence in these now! Over the three sessions I’ve used them, I’ve had a trio of good double figure carp, then my brace of bigger fish and yesterday I visited Gawsworth Fisheries in Cheshire to try them out whilst fishing for bream and other species. As it turned out, it was all bream; I used Marukyu Credence Corn on the hook, and baited my method feeder with EFG161 groundbait and combined a couple of handfuls of the new pellets, and I’d also fired in a few pouches of pellets at the reedline I intended to target. My set up was simple, a medium feeder rod and reel, 6lb mainline and a short 4” hooklink also tied to 6lb line. The first cast completed, I sat back to watch the ‘tip and was delighted to see it slowly pull around after less than a minute. With my first bream in the net (only a few ounces, but in perfect condition) I continued to quickly bait the feeder and cast to the same spot to build up a bed of bait. Bream kept mopping it up....fish after fish went into the keepnet, some even attacking the feeder as it fell through the water! I couldn’t believe how aggressively the fish were feeding over the new pellets and did wonder how long it would be before one of the resident carp turned up and gave me the run around...not long it transpired! After I bagged around 25lb of bream up to 3lb in weight, things went dramatically quiet for a few minutes before my quivertip slowly pulled around purposefully. I had suspected carp would soon be on the scene, so wasn’t surprised to lift the rod and feel proper resistance as something heavy plunged off across the lake. Knowing full well that a size 16 barbless hook and 6lb mainline wouldn’t take kindly to too much pressure, I was happy to let the fish trundle around in deep water in front of my whilst I attempted to tire it; after 15 minutes, though, it was me that was suffering, and, having considered that I had perhaps foul hooked a decent carp, I was surprised to see black tail suddenly slap the surface.... this was no carp! Suddenly the fish decided that it wanted to be 100 yards away and took off on a driving run I had no chance of stopping. My rod took on a pleasing hoop shape as my baitrunner paid out line in response to the dedicated efforts of the fish to shed the hook, and my arm began to ache as the minutes ticked by. Eventually however, I managed to gain some control and wrestled the monster back towards me; after an hour of tussle, the catfish (what else?!) surfaced and slid into my (far too small, I was bream fishing after all!) pan net and was hoisted up the bank for weighing. Another angler had come to assist, and between us, we lofted the moggie onto the scales where the needle bent around to 42lbs! Not a bad result on light tackle! These new Marukyu pellets really are the business...... coming soon!

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14

MACHEDA RETURNS TO HAUNT ROVERS Rovers had to make changes for today’s game. Richie Wellens was out with a foot injury sustained at Leeds and then, in the pre-match warm-up, Abdoulaye Meite suffered a calf strain and was replaced by Mark Duffy necessitating James Coppinger going to right back and Lucas Neill moving into the middle to partner Quinn. Before the game James Coppinger was presented with a memento to celebrate his 400th competitive game in a Rovers shirt. He joins Fred Emery, Bert Tindill and Colin Douglas in the exclusive ‘400 club’. Rovers, defending the South Stand in the first half, got the match going against a yellow-shirted Birmingham side just three points and one place below us. The first quarter hour was spent in midfield, with the visitors shading possession. Burke then fired wide of the far post from the right. Furman got in a 25yard drive in the 20th minute but it was deflected away and then cleared. Rovers got into the game more and in the 26th minute Cotterill had a go from distance on the left but put wide of the far post. Rovers now proceeded to get their passing game going and began to have the better of the possession. In the 37th minute, a foul on Brown gave Rovers a free kick on the right in a good position. Cotterill placed the ball into the middle, a header by a defender fell to QUINN and his shot was blocked but he followed it up and rifled into the net. Following good play on the Rovers left in the 40th minute, Cotterill floated over a cross to the far side of the six-yard box for Brown to get in a good firm header that looked all over a goal but Randolph managed to beat it away. As half time came up Birmingham got their attack going, with Burke winning a corner but it was cleared. Then Spector tried his luck from 20yards

but put high over the bar under challenge from Coppinger. The last action of the half came when Novak tried an overhead kick in the penalty area that went narrowly wide. Birmingham made a substitution at the start of the second half, with the giant Zigic replacing Ibe. The visitors, having kicked off, went on the attack, and were repulsed before Novak eventually tried his luck from 35yards but put wide. In the 50th minute Rovers were awarded a free kick on their left halfway in the Birmingham half. Cotterill placed it near the penalty spot where Neill met it with a glancing header going into the net but somehow Randolph got a hand to it and pushed it away. Another teasing cross from Cotterill was headed over his own bar by Novak for a corner to the Rovers but nothing came from it. At the other end MACHEDA had a go from 30yards but fired high and wide of the far post. But his next attempt in the 57th minute, when he robbed Husband of the ball on the edge of the six yard box, was fired across the keeper into the far corner of the goal. A minute later and only a great tackle by Quinn stopped Novak from going clear on goal. Then Zigic shot high and wide from 20yards. Suddenly Rovers had lost their way and Birmingham took advantage by getting a second goal in the 72nd minute when NOVAK went clear on goal and as Johnstone came out he touched it past him and watched it trickle slowly towards goal. Quinn tried to clear but it defeated his efforts and put the visitors 2-1 up. Rovers hit back and won a free kick on their left but from Cotterill’s kick Randolph got a two-fisted punch on it and cleared. Then, in the 76th minute, a free kick on the Birmingham right touchline was headed by Zigic at the far post into the middle for MACHEDA to head in from close range. Rovers tried hard to hit back but Birmingham were now in command and only a good save by Johnstone stopped Shinnie added to their score in the 88th minute.

STEVE EVANS Local Football ECSTATIC AFTER DRAMATIC WIN

by Michael Clarke

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans praised his side’s spirit and tenacity after they came out on top in a seven-goal thriller at Priestfield, their first win at the venue since 1988. Kieran Agard put the Millers ahead after 14 seconds, but a rollercoaster game saw them behind before a magnificent hat-trick by substitute Tom Hitchcock saw Evans’ side guarantee a play-off position. “It’s a game that’s had everything isn’t it,” Evans said afterwards. “We score after 14 seconds and what a move that is with one and two touch passes. The crowd are as quiet as I’ve ever known it at the Rainham End and we have some good passages of play. We conceded a couple of sloppy goals today and we don’t get those individual errors but we’ve got the spirit and tenacity that not many teams have.” Hitchcock, who netted two goals in the reserve team demolition against Mansfield Town on Monday last scored as a substitute in the 6-0 victory over Notts County, but eclipsed those feats with his triple with just 30 minutes remaining. “A lot of your substitutions as a manager you get wrong, but we put Tom Hitchcock on and I think it could be my best of all time. It was a fantastic hat-trick with three excellent goals and he went on early in the game because we just needed something a bit different. He looked sharp in the reserves on Monday and looked sharp when I took the strikers yesterday and it was a tough call not to start him.”

THREE POOR GOALS CONCEDED Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke to Rovers Player after his side’s 3-1 home defeat to Birmingham City on Saturday at the Keepmoat Stadium. Rovers who were undefeated on home soil since Boxing Day succumbed to three second half City goals, who came from behind to record victory. Former Rovers loan striker Federico Macheda, netted a brace either side of a Lee Novak strike, to cancel out Paul Quinn’s opener. Manager Paul Dickov was disappointed with the defeat, he said: “We were one nil up at half time without playing our best and in the second half there are defining moments in games. “Their goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic save from Lucas Neill to prevent us from going two nil up and we have conceded three really poor goals. “Individual errors at any level are going to cost you and at this level you are going to get punished. “All of the goals were avoidable, defensively recently, we have been very good, so that is probably the most disappointing thing. Dickov was humble in defeat, admitting that the visitors display after the break was worthy of the three points. “We looked fairly comfortable, but the goal gave Birmingham and their fans a lift and the impetus in the game. “When you concede a poor goal through an individual error, you have to make sure it doesn’t happen again and it happened twice more. “You have to give Birmingham credit, second half they deserved it, after they scored they went on and were the better team. Rovers lost two key players in the build up to the match, but refused to blame that on the defeat and called for a reaction on Tuesday, when Rovers take on Bolton Wanderers. “Leading up to the game we have lost Richie Wellens and Abdoulaye Meite. We thought Richie was going to be fit, but he didn’t quite make it and we lost Abdoulaye in the warm up. “They have been a massive part of our success recently and a big factor, but you cannot legislate for conceding goals like that and expect to win. “We have been on a fantastic run, we have been playing and defending well and we need to get back to that on Tuesday night.”

County Senior League U21 Cup Final The league’s first final took place last Thursday, with the top two in the Premier Division, Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 and North Gawber Colliery U21 meeting at a misty Look Local Stadium. Swallownest came out winners thanks to early goals from Jay Atkin and Alex Lill giving them a 2-1 win. Swallownest did not have everything their own way though, as they spent 60 minutes with ten minutes, due to their goalkeeper being dismissed for violent conduct. Premier Division League leaders Oughtibridge WMFC may have chosen the worst possible time to stutter. It was their final game of the league season on Saturday, and they lost 2-1 at home to third placed Penistone Church. This loss was Oughtibridge’s third-ina-row, and may prove costly with Handsworth breathing down their necks. Handworth were able to claim a victory on Saturday as they fought-out a 1-0 win away against Millmoor Juniors. Handsworth now have three games to overturn Oughtibridge’s three point lead at the top, if they are to clinch the Championship. It was derby day at the Civil Service Ground, where Ecclesfield Red Rose hosted High Green Villa in the clichéd six pointer. High Green came out 3-0 winners, inspired by a double from Ben Compai. It is Ecclesfield second consecutive loss to relegation rivals. The win is not enough to lift High Green from the bottom-of-the-table, but they are now four points behind second bottom Everest. The aforementioned Everest have had an excellent week. They drew 0-0 midweek away to Frecheville. They then followed this up on Saturday with comfortable 3-0 home win over Athersley Recreation Reserves. Third bottom Wombwell Main registered a massive 2-1 away win over Swinton Athletic on Wednesday night. They were beaten on Saturday though, losing 4-1 to inform Houghton Main. Wombwell are five points ahead of High Green, but do have a game spare. Swinton Athletic made it four wins from their last five games on Saturday, winning 2-0 away against Frecheville. Frecheville had drawn four games-in-arow prior to this loss. Swallownest Miners Welfare ended their season with a creditable 1-1 draw away against Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. The two teams are fifth and sixth position respectively. Division One With league leaders Joker FC not in action, Jubilee Sports took the opportunity to close-in on them. In midweek, they were 3-1 winners at home to Hallam Reserves. On Saturday, they won by the same same scoreline away against Davy FC, helped by a double from Matthew Turner. Jubilee are now just two points off the pace, with two games spare. Wickersley are also still in the mix following a 3-2 win over fourth placed Penistone Church Reserves on Saturday. They sit in third position, four points off the pace, with a game in hand. Two goals from 18 year old Kumbrai Mutumba inspired Hallam Reserves to a 3-1 home win over Rotherham Town. Goals from Jake Outram (2) and Matt Heaton gave Sheffield Athletic a 3-0 over South Kirkby Colliery. Sheffield Athletic have won all of their last three games, scoring 15 goals in the process. Thorncliffe ended a run of three straight losses, with a 3-1 away win over Davy FC, who remain bottomof-the-table. Division Two North Gawber Colliery claimed their fifth consecutive league win, beating Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves 2-0 at home. North Gawber still lead the table by six points from second placed Kingstone United. Kingstone are proving a hard case to shake-off though. They won again on Saturday, beating Kiveton park 2-0 at Barnsley Sports College. Kingstone have one game in hand of the leaders. Third placed AFC Dronfield completed their fixture list on Saturday, beating Bramley Sunnyside 4-3 in a thriller at Ruby Cook Playing Fields. Sheffield FC Reserves emphasized their return to form this week. They were 4-3 winners over Caribbean Sports midweek, but the most impressive performance came on Saturday as four goals from Liam Bryan helped them to a 6-0 win over struggling Frecheville Reserves. Sheffield have four of their last five league games. Sheffield Lane Top have also had an impressive week. They scored four goals twice. Midweek, goals from Todd Guest, Dillon Parrot, Billy Bradshaw and Adam Ogden helped them to a 4-1 win over New Bohemians. Andy Ogden then scored twice again on Saturday as they beat Boynton Sports 4-3 at the Civil Service Ground. Maltby Main Reserves made it three wins from four on Saturday, as they saw-off New Bohemians 3-2 at the Boundary Sports & Social Club.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS LOSE OUT IN TIGHT CONTEST AT LEICESTER SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk Wednesday put up a good fight against top of the table Leicester but succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat at King Power Stadium. The champions elect hit the ground running and scored inside the first ten minutes through Riyad Mahrez. Michail Antonio bagged the equaliser on his comeback from injury before the break but an Anthony Knockaert free kick settled the clash after half time, as the Foxes extended their lead at the summit. Boasting the best home record in the division, Leicester made a strong start in the Friday evening televised clash. The Foxes fired an early warning shot on five minutes when David Nugent squared for Knockaert, who aimed wide with his first time finish from eight yards. But the hosts kept up the pressure and made it count with a neat finish from Mahrez to break the deadlock. The Leicester midfielder capitalised on a slip by Joe Mattock in the area and neatly tucked the ball past Chris Kirkland into the bottom corner, via a touch off the post. While the Foxes had bossed possession, the Owls crept back into the game midway through the first half and the returning Antonio was at the heart of a promising spell for the visitors.

The forward took responsibility from just over halfway and attacked the Foxes’ backline at pace before blasting on target, only for Kasper Schmeichel to get two strong hands to the ball to push away from goal. Leicester were showing exactly why they sit top of the tree in the Championship and almost doubled their lead through leading marksman Nugent, but the prolific striker curled just wide of the upright. Having threatened Schmeichel’s goal earlier in the half, Antonio capped a menacing run forward with a goal on his return to the side. The winger advanced towards goal from the left with intent before shifting the ball onto his right foot and burying into the bottom corner. Despite making a positive start after the break, Wednesday were powerless to prevent the Foxes from regaining their lead. Knockaert lined up a free kick from just outside the box and struck sweetly

into the top corner past the despairing Kirkland. Wednesday came within a whisker of levelling for a second time following a clever piece of ingenuity from a corner. Mattock did well to spot Chris Maguire in space on the edge of the area and the Scot volleyed first time agonisingly wide of the target. But the Owls went even closer in stoppage time when Kieran Lee was denied from close range by Schmeichel before rebound efforts from Liam Palmer and Leon Best were went astray as Leicester held on for victory. Leicester: Schmeichel, De Laet, Drinkwater, Morgan, James, Schlupp, Knockaert (Dyer 90), Mahrez (Hammond 79), Wasilewski, Nugent, Wood (Taylor-Fletcher 59) Owls: Kirkland, Buxton, Loovens (Coke 57), Onyewu (Llera 46), Mattock, Maguire, Palmer, Lee, Antonio, Best, Lavery (Nuhiu 71)

OUT OF LUCK SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Stuart Gray says his side deserved something from King Power Stadium on Friday evening. Alas, the Owls went down 2-1 to Premiership bound Leicester on a night that all but sealed the hosts’ return to the top tier. Gray said: “We played well tonight and credit to the players because they have pushed the team that will be the champions of the Championship all the way. “We have been beaten by a very well taken goal from Knockaert and that’s the kind of quality they have in the team. “But we have created chances of our own and the players thought we should have had a penalty at the end. “But it’s only a penalty if the referee gives it and he didn’t. “Overall, we worked hard all over the field and I have just said to the players, if you are going to lose a game, that is how to lose it, with honesty, hard work and endeavour.” The injury curse that has haunted Wednesday this season struck again in the Midlands as both centre backs were forced out of the action. Oguchi Onyewu and Glenn Loovens were withdrawn for most of the second half, posing a potential problem for Gray when the Owls travel to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. The head coach said: “It’s hit us again and we won’t know how hard until the players are scanned. “Onyewu has pulled a muscle in his back and Loovens came off with a hamstring. “It’s not great timing with the game we have on Tuesday but that is the situation and we have to deal with it. “But I will put out a strong team at Forest and we will be going there for the win.”

READY FOR MORE SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk Michail Antonio stored a valuable full game under his belt on Friday against Leicester. The influential winger was facing the prospect of spending the rest of the season on the sidelines after original assessments following his ankle injury sustained back in February. But a combination of hard work and determination to return to duty has paid off and Antonio was back in action against the Foxes and back on the score sheet. Wednesday lost out 2-1 at King Power Stadium but Antonio has taken plenty of heart from the game and said: “I’m feeling really good. After 70 minutes I was playing on memory but it’s great to be back. “It was a hard game and you can see why Leicester are top of the league but I’m just buzzing to be back. “After I injured my ankle against Huddersfield, a specialist told me I could be out for the season. “But along with the physios and the sports science team, we’ve all worked so hard to get me back and it’s great to be out on the field and playing.” The winger cut inside from the left and found the bottom corner with a powerful strike against Leicester but the goal was more of a bonus for Antonio, who was just pleased to be back.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14 MURPHY GAINS POINT AGAINST LEYTON ORIENT MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk Jamie Murphy scored United’s 7,000th league goal in this Sky Bet League One encounter with Leyton Orient. Murphy levelled a first half goal from Dean Cox as United against tested themselves against another promotion contender. The Blades, in their 50th competitive fixture of the campaign, were the better side in the second half but had to settle for a point. Maguire and Porter returned as boss Clough made two changes for the home encounter with Leyton Orient, Davies and Paynter dropped to the bench and were joined by defenders Harris and Hill, both back after injuries. The early exchanges saw Collins commanding, winning a number of headers, whilst further forward Coady was employed as the more advanced central midfielder in support of Porter. The opening 15 minutes brought little in terms of scoring opportunities, Murphy and McGinn went for the same Brayford cross and then the Blades wall blocked a free-kick from Ness. An inviting Odubajo cross evaded his team-mates as the lack of chances continued through the mid-point in the first half and United’s appeals for a penalty, following Cuthbert’s challenge on Coady, were waved away. As half-time approached goalkeeper Jones punched away Brayford’s dangerous cross and Freeman went on a mazy run before Leyton Orient took

the lead on 41 minutes. Following two long-range Lundstram shots and the ball bouncing around the Blades box, COX coolly lifted the ball over Freeman to give himself the space required to slot under Howard Before the half-time whistle, the Blades registered a couple of chances, through Brayford, the right-back volleyed wide with his unflavoured left boot and then attached himself to a cross, whilst Maguire picked up the game’s first booking for a foul on Cox. The Blades were the more adventurous in the early stages of the second period. After Coady was fouled, Murphy’s free-kick was deflected over and from the resulting corner a Brayford shot was blocked by Omozusi. In the space of five minutes Clough made two tactical substitutions with Scougall and Davies taking over from McGinn and Porter, which gave Murphy the central striker’s role - and it paid immediate dividends. With 63 minutes on the referee’s watch the Blades levelled. A through ball from Davies beat Baudry and Murphy raced clear before rounding Jones to slot into an unguarded net from an acute angle. Scougall fired at Jones after a quick free-kick and the Orient goalkeeper was being tested, he had to push over a Coady shot on 69 minutes. Soon after

a Davies free-kick was headed wide by Brayford and Clough’s last change on 77 minutes, was Harris replacing Freeman. Jones was called upon again to save and hold a Davies free-kick and in the final 10 minutes the away side came back into the game. Scougall was booked for crudely stopping Batt and then Collins was well-placed to block a Lisbie shot. Despite Leyton Orient being third in the table, it was the Blades who looked the more likely to nick a winning goal in the four minutes of injury time. Flynn was unable to get a shot away following Scougall’s cross and Davies curled over before the referee’s final whistle signalled a second successive home draw against London opposition. Blades: Howard, Brayford, Maguire, Flynn, Doyle, Porter (Davies 63), McGinn (Scougall 58), Collins, Coady, Murphy, Freeman (Harris 77). Unused: Hill, Paynter, Long, Dimaio. Orient: Jones, Omozusi, Cuthbert, Baudry, Cox (Mooney 70), James (Batt 83), Lisbie, Odubajo, Clarke, Lundstram, Ness. Unused: Sawyer, Larkins, Gorman, Dagnall, Simpson.

A GAME OF TWO HALVES MANAGERʼS VIEW www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough felt Saturday’s 1-1 draw with promotion chasing Leyton Orient was a game of two halves. Dean Cox cleverly put the O’s in front late in the first-half, only for the Blades to produce a much improved display after the break, which culminated in Jamie Murphy equalising to net United a deserved share of the spoils. Reflecting on a second consecutive stalemate at Bramall Lane, Clough remarked: “The performance in the first-half was frustrating to say the least, in the second-half we played with more urgency and you can see the difference in the game. “We were slow and laboured in the first-half and the best we could have hoped for was getting in at 0-0, but from our point of view we have conceded a sloppy goal. “We changed the focus a bit when we put Jamie Murphy down the middle and it was good ball by Ben Davies that created the goal. “It was a great finish too, it can be difficult when you are clean through with so much time, but Jamie looked assured and in complete control.” On Murphy and the health of the United squad, the Gaffer concluded: “Jamie deserves so much credit in recent weeks, he offers us something totally different and he is a real threat with his pace when he plays as a striker. “He certainly puts defenders on the back foot and I don’t think they relish facing him, especially in the latter stages of the game. “We lost Jose Baxter to a twisted ankle in training on Friday, whilst Billy Paynter got a whack on the neck against Brentford. We wanted to get some minutes into Stefan Scougall, who has had a tight hamstring, whilst it was nice to give Bob Harris 15 minutes at the end.”
