Copley’s Column

I would not miss my Thursday morning celebrity breakfast for anything and it is always nice to welcome a new face and this week I was pleased to meet a very genial guy from Hull. Dave Montana who came with his wife and son. Dave is a tribute act to Roy Orbison and Del Shannon, two of my favourite singers of my youth. Singing songs from both these excellent artistes has to be vocally challenging and as top pianist Terry Herrington was present with his lovely wife Lydia and agreed to accompany Dave, I really looked forward to hearing him in our customary post breakfast sing song. I was not disappointed as he gave a superb rendition of one of my favourite Orbison songs ‘In Dreams’ Jackie Toaduff greeted me with the most fantastic news, that he and his other half of the legendary Roy and Jackie Toaduff had that very morning, through the post received an invitation to the Queen’s garden party at Buckingham Palace. This is what is meant when I describe Roy and Jackie as legends and showbusiness royalty, to receive this honour is indicative of the stature they hold. Jackie has of course danced many years ago with Princess Margaret when he was British clog dancing champion. The artiste who appeared at the Victoria this week was the wonderful Steve Birks aka Vincent. He always fills the pub and it was particularly busy this week as local lass Michelle Emmens was celebrating her fortieth birthday. Dronfield has lost a good old proper pub this week with the Bridge Inn serving drinks for the last time. It is not reopening as a public house having been sold to a property developer. It is the usual story, however, with it being really busy on the last few days. Had that trade been regularly maintained, the place

would never have closed. On the positive side, the Bridge regulars will swell the customer base of all the other pubs in Dronfield and district. Football has dominated the news with the sacking of David Moyes after his disappointing spell as manager of Manchester United. This was never going to be an easy job following in the footsteps of legendary previous boss, Sir Alex Ferguson. Caretaker manager, Ryan Giggs had a dream start with a resounding victory over relegation candidates Norwich City. Chesterfield secured their automatic promotion back to division one by winning at Burton. Rotherham are in the play offs and I can’t help thinking hat had both Sheffield clubs changed their manager earlier, they both would have been in with a shout.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL Weekly Wit With... PRESENTS DRALION ALBERT

Cirque du Soleil is visiting the Motorpoint Arena next month from the 14th to 18th of May. This show is part of a tour that sees their show Dralion, which celebrates its 15th Anniversary next year, being shown for the first time in the UK. Tickets are available, in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk. Tickets purchased online and through the ticket hotline are priced £55 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £52.50 including booking fee. Dralion Artistic Director Mark Shaub said: “We are very excited to be bringing Dralion to Great Britain next spring. Many of our cast and crew have connections to Great Britain and are looking forward to presenting the show to audiences there. Dralion is a wonderful blend of amazing acrobatics, stunning choreography, live music with hilarious clowns. It’s a feast of colour and emotions that will surely appeal to British audiences”. Fusing the 3000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion (pronounced “Dra-lee-on”) draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Thus embodied, each element is represented by its own evocative colour: air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre. In the world of Dralion, cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and balance is achieved. From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents.

Dream Street Yorkshire is holding a pageant at The Courtyard Bar and Café on Attercliffe Road in Sheffield on 18th May. The pageant is open to ages 4-45 and women who have been married or had children can enter. The pageant is for charity. We will be raising money for Arthritis Research UK and Bullies Out. The pageant is an all natural pageant. There is no fake tans, no makeup on under 13s and it is nothing like you see on toddlers and tiaras. The rounds are T shirt and Denim, a South Yorkshire and proud round and evening wear. The South Yorkshire and proud round is where participants get creative and make a costume inspired by something or someone from South Yorkshire. There is a small entry fee for the pageant of £40. Every contestant will walk away with at least one sash and under 13s get a goody bag. There are 3 ways to get into the national UK final: by winning the overall Dream Street South Yorkshire title, by coming second and winning Dream Street Sheffield or by raising the most amount of money for charity. The pageant is being run by Miss East Yorkshire Curve, Jessica McCubbin. She is studying Biomedical Science at Hull University. Jess found her confidence again by competing in pageants after she was bullied throughout school. She has experience in pageantry and is also holding the Miss UK Dreams heat in East Yorkshire later on in the year. For applications please email Jess at dreamstreetyorkshire@gmail.com. Tickets are also on sale please contact for more information.

SPORT ENGLAND CALLS FOR BIDS FOR ‘CITY OF FOOTBALL’

5

From this week, cities across England will have the chance to bid to become the first ‘City of Football’. Up to £1.6million of National Lottery funding will be invested by Sport England in the successful city to run a pilot programme that unites public, private and voluntary organisations to do whatever it takes to get more people – particularly those aged 14-25 years old – playing all forms of the grassroots game. Phil Smith, Director of Sport, says: “Whilst the number of people playing football regularly has declined, it is still one of England’s most popular sports and the unmet demand to play is high if the offer is right. From kick-abouts in the park to 5-a-side friendlies to 11-a-side leagues, we want to find the city that wants this title more than any other, that will do whatever it takes to get more people playing the game regularly.” Expressions of interest are invited from consortiums of local partners that are committed to working together to deliver a ‘City of Football’. Applications should demonstrate commitment at the highest level and explain why this mix of local partners can together increase the number of people playing football in their city. Further information about how to bid will be available at www. sportengland.org The closing date for applications is 23rd May. A shortlist of cities will then be selected to explore in more detail their potential to be the 'City of Football'.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Fortune Telling - Part 3 The Minor Arcana consists of four suits. They are Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Wands are connected with family life. The element of Fire is very influential and wans are particularly connected to the very fiery zodiac signs of Sagittarius, Leo and Aries. Wands signify the desire for growth and inspiration. When the wands come out in readings then there are invariably connections to family. In the language of Witches the wand is made of hawthorne and adorned with red ribbons - possibly red for danger? Swords symbolise the element of air. Swords are recognised as the sharp witty card. However the nine of swords has a particluar meaning - it implies deceit and double crossing. The cutting edge of the Swords imply big ideas, knowledge and power of the mind. The mistletoe plant carry’s the sword’s message for the Air signs of Libra, Gemini and Aquarius and warn of the need to take care with partnerships. Pentacles are connected to money and possessions. They are closely linked with the Earth element and the Zodiac signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Pentacles signify constancy, and in ancient times pentacles the y also closely symbolised health or life forces. People influenced by the Pentacles are very down to earth nurturers, and tend to look after others. The five of pentacles is a particlualry good card as it symbolises the recepit of money or gifts. Cups are represenative of the element of Water. The Zodiac signs are Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer. Cups surround the power of emotions, friendship, family and romance The Minor and Major Acarna In a reading both the Major and Minor Acarna cards are used. There are a few prominent cards that carry more specific messages. Within the Wands The Knight of Wands means

adventure, a new lover, or taking a risk. The Page of Wands points towards a daring adventure or a younger energetic admirer. The Knight of Wands suggests the emergence of a secret new lover. In the Cups suit the three of cups means celebration and abundance. The eight of Cups means the need to retreat, decline a lover, or move on. The Page of Cups indicates a new lover or new partnership, perhaps with a very sensitive person. There are four key cards within the Swords suit. The three of Swords suggest emotions are blocking the truth. Beware of people taking you for granted! The eight of Swords cautions against being blind to the truth. The ten of Swords warns against betrayal and duplicity, and the King of Swords points towards the presence of a powerful mind, or a judgemental man. Within Pentacles the five of Pentacles can mean a feeling of abandonment or material insecurity. The two of Pentacles is indicative of the need to juggle finances and a changing situation. The Knight of Pentacles suggest the emergence of a successful and prosperous lover. If you want a Psychic reading please contact me on 07811 632353. I will be starting again in middle of May.

A GOOD CUPPA HOLDS THE KEY TO HAPPINESS NOW OPEN A good cup of tea is the key to happiness with 43% of Brits saying a good cuppa always makes them feel better, according to our research. And it seems men are just as likely as women to feel happier after a brew, with 41% men and 46% of women saying it made them feel better. The research also found a third (31%) of people said if a friend has received bad news or is upset they would offer them a cup of tea, and 27% of Brits say they are firm believers in a cup of tea and sympathy. We have released the research to mark the start of Great Brew Break (28 April – 4 May); a week where people across Great Britain raise their best (tea) cups to the nation’s older people and raise much needed funds for older people’s services. Over 140 events up and down the country will take place during the week, including a Mad Hatter’s Tea Tasting Party, Vintage Tea Dances and ‘throw the tea bag’ competitions. Great Brew Break has the backing of a host of celebrities including Stephen Fry, Felicity Kendal, Phillip Schofield, Richard Branson, Theo Paphitis, Alan Titchmarsh, Josette Simon and Cliff Richard. “Never underestimate the power of a good cup of tea! The relaxation that comes from a cuppa and a leisurely chat can

be invaluable – particularly for an older person who may not see anyone from one week to another. The Great Brew Break is a perfect opportunity for friends and family to get together and raise vital funds for older people within your community.” Sir Cliff Richard, supporting Great Brew Break “After a hard day in the garden, there is nothing better than sitting down and enjoying a steaming cup of tea. Every day I drink at least two cups of tea – they lift my spirits and refresh me like nothing else. Join me in raising a cup for Great Brew Break and make a donation to help raise funds to help alleviate loneliness in older people.” Alan Titchmarsh, supporting Great Brew Break, said “Royal Voluntary Service mobile tea vans were a common sight as far back as wartime Britain and today Royal Voluntary Service volunteers serve thousands of cups of tea every week to those in need. We all know a cup of tea and a chat with a friendly face makes us feel better and that’s why the cure for loneliness is so simple – it’s just a bit of time shared with someone. Yet despite the nation’s reputation for a good natter and cup of tea, there is an epidemic of loneliness among older people. Nearly three-quarters of people aged over 75 that live alone feel lonely . We hope everyone

who enjoys a cup of tea today will text BREW42 £2 to 70070 to help us reach out to more older people.” The Royal Voluntary Service helps older people across Great Britain with services such as Good Neighbours (companionship), Meals-on-Wheels and Books-on-Wheels that help alleviate loneliness. Royal Voluntary Service also provides practical support for older people who have been in hospital through its On Ward Befriending and Home from Hospital services. WORKERS HEARING LOSS COMPENSATION

Governments around the world are becoming increasingly reliant on electronic structures and services. Since 2008 a new e-government driver has emerged as a result of the economic downturn, and so public policy towards e-government is now linked to austerity, cost cutting, and rebalancing budgets. The successful transition to e-government is dependent on citizens having access to the necessary infrastructure (computer and internet connection) and possessing the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) skills to enable them to access public services online as and when they need them. In this paper I critically reflect on the impact on older citizens of the move to deliver more and more public services online by drawing on research funded as part of the New Dynamics of Ageing research programme (Sus-IT project), and The Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI), which supports the wellbeing of older people across the island of Ireland.

EXPLORE & DISCOVER WALK SHEFFIELD 2014 Organised walks around the city’s green spaces - 10 – 18 May 2015 The theme for this year’s festival of walks is Sheffield’s greenspaces – its parks, woods, river valleys, and countryside There is a mix of day walks of 6 – 8 miles and shorter evening walks, led by knowledgeable guides. Some include guided tours. All the walks are free and there is no need to book in advance. Wear waterproof footwear, bring raingear and a packed lunch on the day walks. Most of the walks are ‘circular’ (starting and ending in the same place) but a few begin and end in different places, so please check just in case. Health Walks A health walk is a short walk led by volunteers (no more than about 1 hour long) in your local area at your pace. We are not about walking miles in big boots – more about having a chat, meeting new friends, and finding out what’s happening in your community. We meet every week and it would be great to see you there. Call 0114 2734266 for more information. Walking is something we can all take part in. It’s free, easy to access, social, great for your health, and the greenest way to travel. Activity Sheffield are working in partnership with the inmotion! Team to help local communities walk more. Our team will help you to identify ways to fit walking into your daily routine, through challenges, incentives, walking maps, and organised walks. Take part in our weekly walks, come along to our themed walks, or simply build walking into your day by taking a walk to the shops. Walk boost aims to bring communities together, show off the areas local beauty spots and help you find those hidden gems on the high street. To become a member of the Walk Boost scheme give us a call on 0114 273 4266.

APPLICATION FORM

In Association with the WMCIU

WE’RE CALLING TIME

ON CANCER

Here at the Mercury we are proud to be associated with this year’s “For One Night Only” campaign, supporting Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s 20th Anniversary. It is a very poignant involvement for us, given that the Mercury published it’s first issue in 1993, just as the Charity began the appeal for its very first scanner. Many of you (especially our advertisers!) will fondly remember Steve Thompson - or “only old Steve” as he always introduced himself on the phone! Steve was on the staff for the very first issue of the Mercury, and despite suffering from prostate cancer for over two years, it was always in his sights to celebrate our 1000th Issue, in April 2013. First in the office in the morning, he refused to give in to the pain he was suffering in the later stages of his illness, and insisted on coming into the office every day and manning the phones.

On the weekend of our 1000th Issue, Steve handed me a pile of advertising orders. He said “That’s me done for the week!” waved a cheery goodbye, and left the office. Sadly we heard that he went to bed that night, and passed away peacefully in his sleep. Steve visited Weston Park regularly for treatment for his illness, and always came back extolling the virtues of the wonderful staff at the hospital. When we heard of this great event this year, it was no problem at all for the Mercury to offer our support throughout this year, as a testament to Steve and his memory.

Candidates have been announced for this year’s local elections in May. A total of 164 candidates will be standing for election across the 28 wards in Sheffield – a third of the city’s seats plus one additional seat in Walkley following Cllr Nikki Sharpe’s recent resignation. This year 9 of the current members are not seeking re-election on Thursday 22 May. Of the 29 seats up for election in May, 18 are currently held by Labour and 11 by the Liberal Democrats. The political make-up of the City Council is currently 60 seats held by the Labour Party, 22 by the Liberal Democrats and two by the Green Party. The local elections are being held a little later than usual this year to coincide with the European elections. The elections for the six European seats in Yorkshire and Humberside are held every five years and the counts for the European elections will take place on Sunday 25 May, with the results being announced in Leeds. The list of candidates for the local elections may be viewed at: www.sheffield.gov.uk

QUO TO ROCK ALL OVER THE RACECOURSE One of Yorkshire’s favourite outdoor entertainment venues is to play host to a legendary British band that is guaranteed to get Doncaster rocking this month. Doncaster Racecourse has confirmed that multi-platinum selling UK rock band Status Quo, who have notched up 64 British hit singles and over 118 million world-wide record sales over the course of a career spanning more that forty years, will take to the stage at the Town Moor track live after racing on Saturday May 17. Renowned for their distinctive brand of boogie rock ‘Quo’, comprising founder members Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt and keyboard player Andrew Bown, bassist John ‘Rhino’ Edwards and drummer Leon Cave, are set to perform a string of hits including Rockin’ All Over The World, Whatever you Want and Caroline during the first of

three planned summer music events taking place at the racecourse. Mark Spincer, managing director at Doncaster Racecourse said: “We are thrilled that we have managed sign up legendary British rockers Status Quo to kick off the first of our live music concerts in May. “Quo’s career spans more than forty years and they have had more British hit singles than any other band, so we’re expecting large crowds to be rocking up to the Town Moor for a great day’s racing and some first-class entertainment. Our outdoor concerts are hugely popular and are growing in momentum year on year. Over the coming weeks we’re set to announce two more top music acts who will be performing at the Town Moor over the summer months so watch this space.” Last year the racecourse attracted over 40,000 people to its summer concerts which

saw The Saturdays, Lawson, Ronan Keating and Scouting for Girls take to the stage over three events. The Town Moor track will host the second music concert of the summer after racing on Saturday June 28 and the third will follow racing on Saturday August 16. Music and horse racing fans alike are being urged to book tickets as soon as possible for what is predicted to be a sell-out event. Adult tickets start from just £31, children’s tickets are £11. Hospitality options available from £103.20. All tickets and hospitality for the event, which are on sale now, include racing followed by Status Quo live after racing. For more information about racedays at Doncaster Racecourse, visit www. doncaster-racecourse.co.uk or to buy tickets, call 01302 304206.

HOLIDAY’ MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder

Hello and I hope we’re finding you fit and well. After a week off work I’m supposed to be feeling refreshed.. Well I am.. sort of. If you decide to stay at home like I did, your wife is at work and thinking that Father/son time might be fun, well it is.. kind of. If you throw in the list of jobs you have meening to do on the house for an age and add a nearly two year old son into the mix I actually have gone back to work for a rest! Granted there’s a feeling of satisfaction getting those jobs done and Father/Son bonding time is always a bonus in the busy world we live in. I thought a day trip to the Railway Museum in York may wear him out, I was right.. it did.. and me too, i was fast asleep in bed by 9pm. A holiday is having nothing to do and all day to do it in Robert Orben Congratulations to all those that won Digital Radios on Magic AM throughout April. The winning continues as we head into May and If you are a fan coming soon the Sheffield Lyceum is ‘Tonight’s the Night’ – the Rod Stewart musical. I’ve got tickets to give away all next week. Just tune in at 8:20am each morning for details on how you could be a winner. If you want more info go to www. magicam.co.uk Hoping you can join me for breakfast weekday mornings on Magic AM from 6 - 10am and across the day. Listen on 990, 1305, 1548 AM, Digital Radio and online at magicam.co.uk for just great songs.

Back in early April, the WMCIU held their Annual General Meeting, their 151st, as usual at Blackpool. Two fairly radical motions were proposed, one being to drop the Working Men’s part from the title of the organisation, the other being to abolish the post of General Secretary. Both were defeated- the first quite narrowly whilst the second saw a result of only 3 in favour, 530 against. But what about the more closely contested name change? This is not the first time such as motion has been proposed. Perhaps many of us are more familiar with the shortened version, the CIU, than the full title so it might make little difference what the official name is. Over past decades there has been much heated debate about the ‘working men’s’ part. In 1955, for example, there was a call to alter the rules so that the WMCIU could become ‘the National Club and Institute Ltd.’ This proposal was discussed at a special meeting in July that year. One view saw the term ‘working men’s’as inappropriate as over one-third of CIU clubs admitted women as members. It was criticised for keeping alive a classconsciousness they were trying to eradicate. Substituting ‘National’ for Working Men was thought to better indicate the extent and scope of the organisation composed of all classes ‘including professional and business men, administrative and clerical.’ The suggested change, however, was overwhelmingly defeated. In June 1971, there was another attempt to alter the name. Vice President Derek Dormer highlighted the changes that had taken place in the movement, in particular the fact that around 50% of the clubs wanting to join the organisation did not have ‘working men’s’ in their name. ‘The executive wonder how many Clubs outside the Union refrain from joining because of the name.’ He was concerned that expansion of the movement could be set back if this part was retained. It was recognised that working men and women had changed, as had their habits and social behaviour. At a special meeting in the Central Hall, Westminster, many were against the name change. Working class people were being attacked enough, it was claimed, and to lose their identification in the name of the organisation was a step too far. The motion was defeated. This year, the margin was narrow so we can expect this issue to crop up again sometime soon.

Chris and Amber realise that they both have to be honest with their respective partners. Sonya is shocked that Brennan has set up a website in an attempt to smoke out Montague. Fri: Montague remains at large. Callum proves to be too canny. Doug gives Josh some sound advice, but fears grow for the older man after he goes missing at night.

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

I’ve been having fun! I had one of those blank thingys last week, but today saw me back on the bank at one of my favourite day tickets venues, Gawsworth Fisheries in Cheshire. I wasn’t after big fish, but I intended to spend just a few hours fishing with a float by the lilies and fish bread in search of well, whatever happened along really! I’ve had a new rod recently, a Shakespeare ‘Agility’ pellet waggler tool, and I’ve been itching to try it out. It’s not an expensive rod, retailing for around £50, maybe less, but it looks smart, has a lovely cork handle and offers plenty of backbone, both to chuck weighty wagglers and tame beefy fish. My rebellious streak aside, I didn’t use a pellet waggler, instead selecting a crystal bodied insert waggler to which I attached a size 16 and plumbed at ‘dead depth’ before baiting with a sliver of bread punch. I’d also put four small balls of groundbait, and a few of my new ‘wonder’ pellets (coming soon!) into the swim and within a couple of minutes, I was getting knocks and seeing bubbles around the float. The red tip slid purposefully away and my first fish, a bream, was soon netted. Although it wasn’t unwelcome, I fancied my chances of a crucian carp or two, and fast dips of the float and strikes into fresh air soon gave me a clue that there may be some present. I rate bread as a premier crucian baits, and often dunk my bread punch in krill liquid and dip in krill powder for added attraction, but despite getting plenty of bites, I was still missing loads! A change of depth to leave a couple of inches of line laying on the bottom with a micro tell tale shot above soon tipped the balance in my favour as I hit fish after fish and soon had a good net of chubby golden fish to around a pound. The rod performed well with a fast pick up and enough grunt to divert any intended dive into marginal weed cover and it was easy to exert control as every hooked crucian carp spun wildly around in their own inimitable style. This really was great fun, a fish most casts and a missed bite on the others, the action was fast and furious; dare I say it, ‘proper fishing’ rather than waiting it out behind alarms as so many anglers seem to do? As expected, bigger carp then appeared in the swim, rooting up the lake bed so it looked like the test tank in a lemonade factory and I then lost my first fish which broke my 3lb hook link easily. I can’t resist a bit of close range floater fishing, so the pellet waggler rod was laid to one side whilst I chose something more able to deal with the marauding carp. I tied a size 8 hook straight onto the main line, passed the hook point through a crust of bread and dipped it in the water for a second for casting weight before swinging it out in front of dark back which slowly cruised by. Slurp! The crust disappeared, the line tightened, the fish was on! Then, for the first time in ages, I lost a good fish; the hook pulled under pressure as a carp I’d estimate to be around 15lb made for the island in the middle of the pool and we parted company. Insert your own expletive! I’d done enough for one day however, so after returning the pretty golden crucians, I packed up and made for the van... wet but happy after a day on the float...don’t miss out!

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14

ROVERS TAKE LEAD BUT END UP LOSING OUT A fine, cool and breezy afternoon welcomed Reading to the Keepmoat Stadium for a match that had a lot of meaning for both sides. Rovers needed three points to have a chance of staying up and Reading needed the three points to stay in the Play-Off places. Rovers last win against Reading came in 1984 at Elm Park with a 4-1 scoreline, with a hat-trick by Alan Brown, father of Chris. Rovers made one change from the Millwall game, Billy Sharp coming in for Theo Robinson and Abdoulaye Meite had the red card he got at Millwall rescinded and was thus able to play. Rovers, defending the South Stand end, got the game gonig in what was the last match at home this season. In the fifth minute a long pass back by Gunter, of Reading, went out for a corner to the Rovers but nothing came from it and it was cleared. The next twenty minutes were spent exclusively in midfield, in the middle third of the pitch as each side probed for a breakthrough. In the 25th minute it came when, following a throwin on the Rovers left halfway in the Reading half, the ball reached Sharp. A low cross to the middle was dummied by Brown, the ball ran to the unmarked COPPINGER to the right of goal for him to slam past McCarthy for the opening goal. Over the next ten minutes Rovers had a majority of the play culminating in a great cross from Coppinger on the right bringing a firm header by Brown from 16yards that was well saved by McCarthy. Reading now stepped up their game and as the last five minutes came up they won a series of corners but all were well defended, with Johnstone not troubled unduly. The second half opened with Rovers having a good spell but only winning a corner to show for it and nothing came from that. Around the hour mark Reading got into the game and

put the Rovers defence under pressure. Then, in the 63rd minute Leigertwood was brought down in the penalty area and the referee and his assistant agreed on the penalty being awarded. LE FONDRE blasted the ball low into the net to equalise the score. The Rovers responded and pushed Reading back on to defence for a spell and introduced Wellens to the fray. Play went from end to end for a while then Reading got into their stride and piled the pressure on to the Rovers defence. The 78th minute brought a low cross from the Reading right for Le Fondre to fire high and wide from 16yards. Then, minutes later, Leigertwood shot just over the bar from twenty yards. In the 87th minute a cross from the Reading right was headed in at the far post from close range by POGREBNYAK, who, a couple of minutes later, fired over the bar from 20yards. Into five minutes of added time and, with Rovers all pushing forward for an equaliser, Pearce brought the ball out of defence, took it to the edge of the Rovers penalty area before passing to POGREBNYAK to fire low inside the near post and past Johnstone. Rovers had played well but the penalty and the resultant goal fired Reading into life. DICKOV: WE WILL FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES Paul Dickov reflects on his sides 3-1 defeat to Reading but insists the team will fight for their lives to get a result on Saturday. “Today was disappointing. We got ourselves in such a good position in the first half, by playing well and by pressing high up the pitch. In the second half you have to give Reading some credit because they’ve done to us what we did to them in the first half, but the goals are poor. We’ve just looked at them again and I don’t think Sam (Johnstone) has had a save to make all game but we’ve lost the game 3-1. Again, the goals are down to individual errors. “In the first half we really went for it. I don’t know if we were more up for it but we just didn’t let them play and we were on top. The penalty they scored has come from a goal kick which you have to deal with. That’s your bread and butter stuff. At 1-1 a point wouldn’t have been bad today. As much as we want to win every game we can, a point wouldn’t have been a bad point today against a very good side. “Unfortunately we lost our shape, and the players needed to calm down a little bit and just be patient. But if you’re going to give the ball away like we did for the second goal you are going to get punished. And we have to give Reading credit because they have some top players who have played in the Premier League and they showed that today. “We went in 1-0 up at half time and we’d played well, but you never feel comfortable and it’s important never to get complacent. We warned the players about this at half time but I really do think you have to give Reading credit for what they did because they came out in the second half and showed everyone what a good team they are and why they’re up there pushing for promotion. Doncaster Rovers travel to Leicester for the final day of the season and Paul Dickov knows it won’t be an easy task for his team, but insists that they have to have a good go at the champions to pick up a result. “We have to go down there and have a good go at them. The one thing we do have to do is pick up some sort of result, and sometimes it can be better knowing that you really have to do that. “We know it’s going to be tough. They are champions for a reason, but there’s always last day drama as people at this club know. So we go down there with the attitude that we can do that again. “We have to focus on us. I’ve said all along; even when we pulled clear of the bottom three, that we have to concentrate on us. We can’t rely on other results, we’ve seen that. We have to start picking up points ourselves and we have one game left to do that. “The one thing we will do is go down there, have a go and fight for our lives. “The players are down after the result, but I know them and we’ll pick them back up and we will go again. Whatever happens, it won’t be through a sheer lack of hard work and a lack of unity through the team. As always we will deal with it on Monday and then draw a line under it and we’ll go again. “I’ve always had the belief. People might call me naïve, but I still have that belief. I’m a positive guy by nature and we will drum that into the players. We have to go down to Leicester and give it absolutely everything we’ve got. “Leicester will be desperate to win their last game at home and we will be desperate to get something out of it so we have to have a go. There’s nothing like taking it to the last minute again and we will fight for our lives on Saturday.”

EVANS IS FOCUSED Local Football

Steve Evans is now firmly focused on the playoff campaign that is about to greet The Millers after what has been a fantastic season. Evans this morning confirmed that it is all about preparation now and that will include next Saturday’s match at Swindon Town but first we started with yesterday’s match at home to MK Dons.

Your thoughts this morning after yesterday’s 2 - 2 draw with MK Dons? It always seems like a great victory when you come back from 2-0 down and so it should. Once again the lads have gone right to the very end, at times they are incredible and over the 90 minutes we got the very least we deserved. For over an hour it was not a good performance, we lacked most things we are good at but we managed to straighten a few things out at half-time and of course with the introductions of the substitutes who all helped to change the game. I think a few of the lads have one eye on the playoffs and have had that for a few matches now, they cannot be blamed for that as they are all human. I have to say in that last 20 minutes we looked back at our best as we laid siege to the MK Dons goal and if we hadn’t scored it would have been a travesty. Much was said all season and after the match yesterday by the odd individual or two that we are not good enough to be in the play-offs, some people need to accept and acknowledge what this Rotherham United team has achieved in two seasons, it is remarkable. Like ourselves MK Dons have a brilliant Chairman, a new ground, very loyal and superb supporters plus a host of top quality players so to play them yesterday whilst looking at the current League One league table demonstrates how much progress we have made. Yesterday was a competitive fixture, how are we on the injury front? It certainly was a bit fired up at times and maybe the late challenges on James Tavernier and Ben Pringle on another day would have been dealt with much more severely. However, the good news is that we have come through unscathed and we are in great shape. Going onto the match referee, what I would say is that he did show great management when MK Dons young player George Baldock went down with a head knock. The young man for me was having a fine match and I am delighted to hear this morning that he has gone home with the team and looks to be none the worse for his knock but I will be on the telephone later today to MK Dons just to make sure the kid gets our best wishes. As we now prepare for the play-offs what is planned for the week ahead? We have two very important matches ahead of the play-offs. It is paramount that everyone now gets a chance to claim a place in the team and we have a closed door match against Championship opposition in Tuesday then travel to play Swindon Town next Saturday. I want each and every one of our players to show clearly in there match performance and in training that they should be given a starting shirt in the play-off matches. They will be exciting, live Television, big crowds and playing against some of the best teams in League One. There is a real buzz at Rotherham United and I want everyone, especially our fantastic supporters to embrace it for every second.

County Senior League There was the whiff of Ambre Solaire in the air this week as the County Senior League begins to slow down for the summer. There were five games midweek. In the Premier Division, Houghton Main tied down third place, as a Ashley Vickers strike gave them a 1-0 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Fourth place Penistone Church ended their season with a 2-1 loss to Athersley Recreation Reserves at Sheerien Park. Division One’s bottom side Davy FC ended a run of seven straight league losses with a 5-3 home win over South Kirkby Colliery. Adam McCarthy, Nicky Mulgrew (2) and Nicky Christian composed Davy’s score-sheet. The top two met again in Division Two for the second time seven days, with league leaders North Gawber Colliery hosting second placed Kingstone United. North Gawber won last weeks encounter 1-0 and went onto the claim the Division Two title. This time the two teams shared the points with a 2-2 draw. Maltby Main Reserves ended their season positively, as they registered their fourth win in five league games, with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield FC Reserves at Muglet Lane. Matthew Bradley and Jordan Thomas were both on target for Maltby. Last Saturday played host to the final weekend fixtures of the season. Both games came at Davy’s Sports Ground. Davy FC ended their disappointing season, with a 3-1 home loss to second bottom Sheffield Bankers. At the same venue Davy FC ‘s U21 team finished their season with a 2-0 loss to Houghton Main U21 thanks to goals from Aaron Tate and Jordan Beardsley. Only five games remain to be played in the 2013/14. They are: Monday 28th April Division Two Sheffield Lane Top v Bramley Sunnyside Wednesday 30th April Premier Division Wombwell Main v Handsworth Division Two North Gawber Colliery v Sheffield FC Reserves U21 Division Treeton Terriers U21 v Valley Knights U21 Monday 12th May Division Two Bramley Sunnyside v Caribbean Sports Meadowhall League Premier Division The heat is on Rawson Spring at the top of the Premier Division. Rawson Spring lost their second game of the season, as they went down 2-0 away against second placed Hackenthorpe A. Rawson Spring were unbeaten in the league prior to last week, but Hackenthorpe’s win cuts their lead to just three points. Hackenthorpe have a superior goal difference, and also have one game left against bottom side Wadsley Birdge WMC. Rawson Spring have completed their fixtures. Brunsmeer Abbey AJW have had a productive week. On Thursday they claimed a 3-1 win over second placed Hackenthorpe A. Scott Ruthven starred for Brunsmeer with a brace of goals. They followed that up on Sunday with a hard-fought 2-1 away win over The Devonshire. Crookes built on last weeks win Rawson Spring, with a 2-1 win over Handsworth Turf Tavern at Warminster Road. Wadsley Bridge WMC claimed just their second point of the season, as they held Arundel to a 1-1 draw at Chaucer Sports Centre. Division One High Noon have had a strange week, as they playedout consecutive goalless draws. The league leaders firstly drew with second placed Packhorse Inn on Tuesday night, before and then were held at home to Hackenthorpe B on Sunday. The draws will not bother High Noon too much though, as they have won the Division One title. Jack-in-a-Box climbed into third place with a 2-1 home win over second-bottom Penistone Church. Only goal difference leaves Jack-in-a-Box below second placed Packhorse Inn with two games to play. Division Two Mosborough leapfrogged Woodhouse JFC to go top of the Second Division on Sunday, as they beat their rivals 4-0 at Mosborough Miners Welfare. Mosborough now have an anxious wait. They have finished their fixtures and lead the standings, but if SWD win their remaining two games they can snatch the title out of their grasp.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 DISAPPOINTING OWLS SLIP UP AT THE LAST SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday were beaten by an impressive Bolton Wanderers side in the last home game of the 2013/14 Championship season. Bolton raced into an early 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Neil Danns, Chung Yong Lee and Liam Trotter before the Owls pulled one back with a long range strike by Joe Mattock. But try as they might, Wednesday couldn’t reduce the deficit and Bolton’s first half efforts proved enough to take all three points. Wednesday started the game brightly as Giles Coke tested Adam Bogdan with a low drive after just 90 seconds. However, it was the visitors who took the lead on eight minutes, when Danns bundled the ball home at the far post following a cross from the left by Robert Hall. Michail Antonio then fired over following a goalmouth scramble at the other end but moments later Bolton doubled their advantage as Lee latched onto a long ball from the back and slid past Kirkland. The Owls responded well, though, with Rhys McCabe forcing Bogdan into a good save at his near post. But Bolton found a third just

before the half-hour as Trotter hit a stunning dipping volley over Kirkland from 25 yards. Wednesday found the net themselves ten minutes later when Mattock fired a terrific half volley into the top corner from the edge of the area. Caolan Lavery then nearly found the hosts’ second moments before half time with a fine effort from an acute angle that had Bogdan at full stretch but the Trotters went down the tunnel in the ascendancy. Early in the second period, Bolton looked certain to score a fourth as Danns was released one on one with Kirkland, but the Owls keeper smothered the ball expertly when the midfielder looked to go round him. The remainder of the half

produced few genuine chances for either side, although Bolton had the best openings. The clearest perhaps fell to Danns, who had the goal at his mercy but Kirkland was off his line swiftly to divert before Lee shot into the side netting after a swift Bolton attack on the counter. Owls: Kirkland, Antonio, Onyewu, Coke (Afobe 85), Mattock (Corry 60), McCabe (Stobbs 60), Helan, Lee, Lavery, Nuhiu, Loovens Bolton: Bogdan, Mills, Ream, Spearing, Beckford (Kellett 79), Hall (Jutkiewicz 73), Trotter, Danns, Lee (Youngs 90), Wheater, Threlkeld

MAKING BOBBY PROUD SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk Last Saturday’s home clash with Bolton served as Sheffield Wednesday’s designated game to support the Bobby Moore Funds Campaign, ‘Make Bobby Proud’, which has run for the duration of the 2013/14 season. The Owls promoted a range of activities to help raise awareness of bowel cancer, which claimed the life of the World Cup-winner in 1993. The Bobby Moore Fund was established by Stephanie Moore MBE when her husband and football legend Bobby passed away at the age of just 51. All funds raised go directly to lifesaving bowel cancer research. Since the fund was established 21 years ago, over £20m has been raised in Bobby’s memory and the Owls were proud to lend their support at their last home game of the season. In the UK alone, one in 16 people will be diagnosed with bowel cancer at some point in their lifetime – or the equivalent of at least one player per squad in the Football League. However, given that more people are beating the disease than ever before, the chances of dying from bowel cancer in the UK have fallen by 30 per cent since the inception of the Bobby Moore Fund. Spencer Taylor, CSR Manager at Sheffield Wednesday, said: “The club are so pleased to be supporting this fantastic cause. “Bobby Moore was a true icon to the game and we are proud that we’re able to get behind the ‘Make Bobby Proud’ campaign to make sure his legacy continues.” Jessica Taylor, Senior Campaign Manager of the Bobby Moore Fund, added: “Thank you to Sheffield Wednesday for supporting the Bobby Moore Fund at Saturday’s home game against Bolton. We are truly grateful for the support of the club, the players and your supporters. Together we can beat bowel cancer sooner.” In addition, the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme is showing its support with Head of Education John Williams taking part in a charity sky dive for the benefit of the Bobby Moore Fund. To sponsor John visit www. justgiving.com/johnwilliams3886 Sheffield Wednesday pledge their ongoing support to the Bobby Moore Fund….and also wish John all the best with his sky dive!

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14 NO SLACKING FOR BLADES AT VALE MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

Two late goals ensured that the Blades continue with the end of season momentum. In the final ten minutes Jamie Murphy and Chris Porter were on target as the Blades came from behind to secure three more points. The goals also ensured that the Blades stretched an unbeaten league run to six games. Blades boss Clough again rotated his ranks, making four changes for the trip to the Potteries. Skipper Doyle, Freeman, Scougall and Baxter returned with Hill, McGinn, Davies and Porter dropping to the bench. Freeman slotted in at left-back and Baxter and Scougall as advanced midfielders with Murphy kicking off as the lone striker on a slick surface, due to prematch rain. Vale forced the early chances and would have been disappointed not to have opened the scoring on five minutes. Dodds escaped his marker and after his shot came back off a post, he delivered a floated cross which beat Howard but Maguire headed over before Williamson arrived. Doyle then had to cut out a cross from Williamson aimed for Myrie Williams before United’s opening chance fell to Baxter, who cut in from the left but shot at goalkeeper Johnson on 12 minutes. Ex Blades scholar Robertson headed wide a corner from Dodds soon after, whilst

United’s defence was stretched further when Collins limped off midway through the half - Hill was the replacement. United stemmed the flow of Vale attacked in the early stages of the half and began to force the home side onto the back foot for spells but, a couple of long range freekicks apart, Johnson was barely tested before the half-time whistle. Early in the second half United were appealing for a penalty when Maguire appeared to be knocked off balance but with their first attack after the break, Port Vale opened the scoring. A pass from Yates appeared to take a deflection and wrong-foot Hill, allowing DODDS the space to fire beyond Howard’s left-hand from close range. United’s response came from Scougall. The Scot had an effort blocked and then, on 58 minutes, he made a darting run and forced a low save from Johnson. A number of runs from Murphy, now operating on the left, also forced the home side back. Howard saved from Knott but United’s struggle to break through the Vale defence resulted in Porter replacing Baxter with around 20 minutes to go. Davies was Clough’s last change a few minutes later, taking over from Coady. As the game entered the final ten minutes, United levelled. Brayford found space on

the right and his low delivery was perfect for MURPHY to delicately place into the far corner, beyond the reach of Johnson. Despite Howard gathering Knott’s cross at the second attempt, the equaliser gave United momentum in the closing minutes. Davies whipped in a number of corners and Murphy again went close, this time Johnson saved at his near post. And the late pressure was rewarded with a goal in the 90th minute. This time it was Murphy who delivered the low cross from the right and PORTER was wellpositioned to simply direct the ball into the unguarded net. Four minutes of added time was announced soon after and, expectedly, Port Vale began to apply the pressure but the Blades were economical with the amount of bodies being pushed forward and held on to complete the league double over Micky Adams’s side. Blades: Howard, Brayford, Maguire, Flynn, Doyle, Baxter (Porter 72), Collins (Hill 23), Coady (Davies 78), Scougall, Murphy, Freeman. Unused: McGinn, Paynter, Long, Kennedy.

Nigel Clough is pleased to see the Blades are developing a ‘winning mentality’. Speaking after two late goals from Jamie Murphy and substitute Chris Porter paved the way for a comeback win against Port Vale on Friday night, the Gaffer was quick to praise the spirit and character of his players. He remarked: “We had to hang on in there for long periods of the game, but the performance is indicative of the spirit within the group. “Port Vale work unbelievably hard as you would expect with Micky Adams in charge and we were in a real battle throughout. Their goal was slightly fortunately, they got a lucky break of the ball, but that was the first goal we have conceded in the last 11 night matches, a remarkable stat!” Clough was also delighted with the manner of United’s goal and the patience his side demonstrated at Vale Park, adding: “We had a lot of possession in the firsthalf without penetrating, but remaining patience got us two tap-ins in the last 10 minutes. If you do the basics well enough on a consistent basis the percentages normally come down in your favour. We have to get the balance right going forward, we want to be positive without being reckless and over the course of the season we have. “We want to instill a winning mentality and that was proved by not sitting back at 1-1. It is satisfying when you get your reward.”
