Copley’s Column
This week has been non stop entertainment wise for me, the highlight of which for me, with all due respect to the other acts, has to be the Elvis Presley show on Wednesday at the City Hall Sheffield. The format for the show is that Elvis appears in hologram whilst the band and backing singers, many of them the originals play and sing on stage. The overall effect was amazing and the sound in the hall was magnificent, I never ot the chance to see Elvis live and so this was a night to remember. Rushing home to get the last hour in my local and driving faster than I should have done my night looked as if it would be spoiled when the flashing blue lights of a following police car came on. This called for a liberal slice of the Copley charm and the incident ended amicably with a handshake and assurances from me that I would slow down in future. Thursday night at the Victoria featured regular entertainers Hannah Lily and Russ Dennett as Acoustic Lily, This popular local duo always go down well, and the top quality entertainment continues next Thursday with the appearance of the very talented John Alex, who includes a brilliant Elton tribute in his second set. Early arrival is strongly advised next week. At the time of writing, I am getting ready to attend Brimington Rockfest at the Butchers Arms, This fantastic event starts at three o’clock and features Firecracker/Vida, Traitors. Full Throttle. Carnival. Conspiracy. Escape Plan and Caught Stealing, I shall be reporting on this as well as Acoustic Angels in the evening at Dronfield Sports and Social Club next week. I am pleased to report that a charity event, ‘Rock the Town @ Whirlow Farm’ to benefit the Master Cutler’s Challenge. Starting at four in the afternoon until eleven forty five, bands appearing are Junkyard Dog, Absolute Beginners, James Lamb, Vyndictive, and Carnival ending with a ‘musical mosh up’ finale Tickets for this event are twenty
pounds. After the lenient treatment of Stuart Hall for sexual offences against young girls, I was heartened to read that a more appropriate sentence was handed to the arrogant spin guru, Max Clifford who by all accounts smirked his way through a lengthy trial and refused to apologise to his victims, and was handed out an eight year prison sentence. I wonder if other prisoners will wipe the smile off his face, I sincerely hope so. Finally I would like to give a metion to the founder of The Mercury John Booker who I was privileged to enjoy a drink with locally over the Bank Holiday.

BRITAIN’S ORIGINAL Weekly Wit With... BURLESQUE ALBERT EXTRAVAGANZA HITS SNODGRASS SHEFFIELD Flushed with success, now entering its fourth fabulous year, the world’s original touring burlesque spectacular is about to hit Sheffield when it arrives at the City Hall on Friday 30th May. Officially Britain’s biggest burlesque extravaganza – a quarter of a million people have now seen this show – An Evening of Burlesque is responsible for exposing the cream of the West End of London’s thriving burlesque scene to the world. Not only has the ever-so-cheeky production revealed the secrets of the art of burlesque to delighted audiences across the UK, it has also thrilled theatregoers at the swishest venues throughout Europe as well. From Milan to Zurich, St Petersburg to Minsk, Leipzig to Verona, Dresden to Riga, Padova to Dessau the reaction has been the same – absolutely incredible, says show producer Michael Taylor. “Nothing is lost in translation,” says Michael. “An Evening of Burlesque’s content – sparkling glamour, physical humour and a dynamic score – are appreciated in any language.” An Evening of Burlesque features corsets, killer heels and stockings aplenty – and that’s just the theatregoers who come to see the show! “For a spectacle that sparkles from its elaboratelydecorated headdresses to its immaculately varnished toes,” says Michael, “it might not come as a complete surprise that audiences are predominantly female. Also, we’re pleased to report that, with a prize for the best-dressed member of the audience, theatregoers revel in dressing up for the occasion.” The show itself sparkles with couture costumes recalling the golden eras of burlesque. An Evening of Burlesque claims to be the most glamorous show on tour. For over-18s only, it boasts that its success is built on a combination of sultry vocals, breathtaking choreography, mischief, magic, frivolity and fun. “It’s all tease, no sleaze,” says Michael. “The show combines musical and theatrical parody, cutting-edge variety, magic, comedy and dance with the art of striptease.” Michael says he is proud to be bringing variety back to the theatre, claiming An Evening of Burlesque is the slickest, wickedly wittiest, most delightfully choreographed cabaret spectacular of the year. “Dress up and come to the cabaret,” he says. An Evening of Burlesque Friday 30th May Tickets priced at £22.50 are available by either calling 0114 2789789 or visiting sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

A security guard stopped me as I walked out of the supermarket today. “Can you open the jacket for me please, sir?” he asked. “Sure,” I replied, unbuttoning it all the way down, “There you go.” He said, “Thanks, but I meant yours.” Filming the next installments of Star Wars in the UK is a bit disappointing after all the others were filmed in space. A man was sitting reading his papers when his wife hit him round the head with a frying pan. ‘What was that for?’ the man asked. The wife replied ‘That was for the piece of paper with the name Jenny on it that I found in your pocket’. The man then said ‘When I was at the races last week Jenny was the name of the horse I bet on. The wife apologized and went on with the housework. Three days later the man was watching TV when his wife bashed him on the head with an even bigger frying pan, knocking him unconscious. Upon re-gaining consciousness the man asked why she had hit him again. The wife replied. ‘Your horse phoned’ I’m not exactly a health freak, but I try to drink at least ten pints of water per day. Fair enough, most pints contain yeast, barley and hops, but that’s a different matter. Employer: “In this job we need someone who is responsible.” Applicant: “I’m the one you want. On my last job, every time anything went wrong, they said I was responsible.” “So how did the interview go?” my wife asked me. “I’m not too sure to be honest, I said all the usual stuff like, I’m a hard working person, I get on well with others, I won’t let anyone down, blah blah blah, but then he sort of looked at me funny.” “How come?” she replied. “Because I said blah blah blah.” The earth is rotating at over 1000 miles per hour, however humans don’t feel the effect of it. Until the ninth or tenth pint. I called 999 last night and said, “My wife has just had a heart attack while we were playing snakes & ladders.” “Is she breathing?” he asked. “Hang on, mate.” I replied. After 45 seconds, he said, “Are you still there?” “Of course I am.” “So what’s taking you so long?” “I rolled a six, that means I get another go.”

NEWS & INFORMATION
MORE CARE NEEDS THAN CARERS BY 2017
The number of older people in need of care is expected to outstrip the number of family members able to provide informal care for the first time in 2017, according to a new report published by the think tank IPPR (24/4/14). The report shows that the average annual cost for an older person who pays for a typical package of care has increased to £7,900 a year, an average £25,000 for home care and an average £36,000 for a nursing home. The new report is the latest in a series from IPPR’s flagship ‘Condition of Britain’ project on social policy. The final report from the Condition of Britain project will be published in June. By 2030, an estimated 230,000 older people in England who need care of more than twenty hours a week could be left without family to help, according to new analysis by IPPR. The report says that the number of people aged 65 and over without children to care for them will almost double before the end of the next decade and that by 2030, there will be more than 2 million people in England without a child to care for them if needed. The report shows that older people are not simply recipients of care they are also providing it: Intensive care provided by spouses and partners is expected to increase by 90 per cent over the next fifteen years also. The report says it is difficult to see how families will be able to provide even higher levels of care in the medium to long term. The report also shows that the fact that levels of employment for women with children and those over fifty are lower in the UK than in many other OECD countries suggests that if anything there is a problem of a lack of affordable, flexible and good quality formal care, rather than family members not providing enough to care. The report argues that UK should follow Germany, Japan and Australia in finding alternative ways to fill this gap. The report also points to best practice in Leeds. The report argues that without enough care from adult children to meet demand, more older people will instead need help from other family members, friends and neighbours, or will rely on paid care and the NHS. The report argues that the UK needs to plan ahead, learn from other countries and build: • New neighbourhood networks for older people to give and receive support and offer an extra help to families and carers and reduce pressures on the NHS and social care. • House public services for different age
groups (such as childcare and care for the elderly) under one roof, to bring generations together, as they do in Germany. • Invest local public health budgets in strengthening community groups in those local authorities with the weakest record for community-based care. • Stronger employment rights for those caring for people who need more than 20 hours of care a week, to make it easier for family members to combine work and care. • Care coordinators providing a ‘single point of contact’ to replace the ‘care management’ currently provided by adult social services in every area by 2020, for all but the most complex cases of care. Clare McNeil, IPPR Senior Research Fellow, said: “The supply of unpaid care to older people with support needs by their adult children will not keep pace with future demand. Thousands of people in their 60s and 70s today could be left to cope on their own when they need care in the future, with overstretched services unable to make up the shortfall. Britain needs to build new community institutions capable of sustaining us through the changes ahead and to adapt the social structures already in place, such as family and care, public services, the workplace and neighbourhoods”.

The report highlights innovative changes being made across the world as populations age: • The German federal government is investing in over 500 ‘multi-generational homes’ which bring together isolated groups like mothers and baby groups, childcare, youth groups and care for the elderly under one roof. • In Berlin schemes encourage older people with no children or whose families live far away to become grandparents by ‘adopting’ children raised in single-parent families. • In Japan a ten-year nationwide campaign has begun to train people about the condition called ‘The Nationwide Caravan to Train One Million Dementia Supporters’. • In Western Australia, social care is organised around a neighbourhood care coordinator who acts as a single point of contact for all those with care needs. • In Leeds, ‘Neighbourhood Networks’ are community based voluntary organisations, run by older people, that cover the whole of the Leeds Metropolitan area and provide activities to reduce social isolation, as well as everyday care and support. GETTING TO KNOW THE PEOPLE BEHIND WESTON PARK HOSPITAL Name: Trish Fisher Occupation: Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Clinical Director of Weston Park Hospital. I work with my managers and nurses to make sure we are offering the best possible services for our patients.
either in clinics here or at the Northern General. My clinical area is lung cancer and I see a mix of patients referred as newly diagnosed lung cancer patients, or on treatment with either chemotherapy or radiotherapy and follow up patients who completed their treatments some years ago. It’s lovely to see patients well and living full lives 2 or 3 years out from treatment!
What do you love most about your job? Where do you live?
I currently live in Grenoside with my husband Glyn and love the fact that we can be in the great outdoors within 5 minutes of leaving the house. At the weekend we often hear more noise from passing horses than passing cars.
Do you have any children/ pets?
We did used to have 2 cats but sadly they died a few years ago and as Glyn doesn’t like cats we agreed that when Sooty and Sweep died that we wouldn’t replace them. What I’d really like is a little dog but I don’t think that’s fair until I spend more time at home.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time? What little I have I spend either in the swimming pool or tramping through muddy fields. Both help me unwind and also to subconsciously process some of the “wicked problems” at work that I’ve failed to solve the previous week.
How did you end up working for Weston Park Hospital?
When I was in training I thought I wanted to be a chest physician but after spending a short time as a ward based doctor at Cookridge Hospital in Leeds I found I really enjoyed looking after cancer patients. I therefore switched to oncology and was lucky that a couple of jobs came up in Sheffield. After a few years I realised I loved the city and loved the hospital and didn’t want to live or work anywhere else.
What does a typical working day involve for you?
I don’t think I have anything resembling a typical day! Some days are spent largely in my management role and therefore include lots of meetings. The days I enjoy the most are the days I see patients
The best part of my job is the patients but also the staff here at Weston Park who are always prepared to go the extra mile and are a joy to work with.
And the least?
The worst part of my job is all the meetings and the fact that we can’t always make things happen as quickly as we would wish which can be quite frustrating.
What is your greatest lifetime achievement?
I think my greatest lifetime achievement was getting the right job in the right place at the right time. I was very fortunate in 1998 that a consultant job came up here in Sheffield and that the job involved looking after patients with lung cancer as that was the patient group I enjoyed caring for most.
How vital are the services provided by Weston Park Hospital to the people of the region?
Weston Park may be physically based in Sheffield but we see and treat patients from a much wider area including Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Rotherham. We try very hard to design our services from the patient’s view point and that largely means giving treatment as close to home as possible so that patients can be supported by their family and friends. We therefore give a great deal of our chemotherapy in local hospitals and are now also looking at whether we can start delivering radiotherapy more locally.
What sort of impact does the hospital have on the future of cancer research, treatment and care? Whilst cancer care has improved hugely since I arrived in 1993 there are still a lot of areas where things could be improved further. Radiotherapy
WESTON PARK HOSPITAL CANCER CHARITY
GENERAL FACTS The charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to fund a wide range of projects that will keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment.
Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Whitham Road | Sheffield S10 2SJ Tel: 0114 226 5370 Email: cancer.charity@sth.nhs.uk Registered Charity Number 1039885

technology has moved on enormously and new targeted drugs are also being developed for far more types of cancer. As things change all the time we need to be fully involved in research trials to ensure that our patients have access to new technologies and techniques as well as new drugs before they are more widely available. Therefore a lot of patients will be approached about taking part in clinical trials and it’s humbling that the vast majority of those patients do agree to go into studies, which is why we are one of the most research active cancer centres in the UK.
How important is Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in shaping the future of the hospital? The Charity is absolutely fundamental to what we do. They’ve done so much for us over recent years that the list is endless but a few examples: they’ve helped us modernise our Day Case Unit where we deliver most of our chemotherapy and also supported us with the Clinical Research Unit which opened very recently. They fund vital pieces of equipment in the radiotherapy department as well as research staff and research projects. In addition they help us run our Cancer Support Centre which is so important in supporting patients and their families through and beyond treatment. We all know the NHS is facing a challenging future in terms of funding and therefore the ongoing support of the Charity will be absolutely key in keeping Weston Park at the forefront of cancer care.
What would you like to see for the future of Weston Park Hospital?
There are lots of areas of work we would like to do to improve our services for patients further. I think one of the most visible problems at present is that our building is a little old and tired and we need some major refurbishment in lots of areas including our reception area, outpatients and wards. Therefore we’re currently doing a big piece of work to be clear about what our hospital should look like in
5 – 10 years time as we know that major work will be very expensive and we need to make sure we get it right for our patients and staff.
And finally… what advice would you give to a patient who may be apprehensive about visiting Weston Park Hospital for the first time?
I think the vast majority of patients who first come to Weston Park are very nervous which is completely understandable. However what most people find is once they’ve come to WPH they love the hospital, partly because we’re quite small and therefore easier to navigate but largely because our staff are so approachable and so caring. If patients coming to us for the first time have any particular worries our concerns then we are always happy to arrange a visit for them to look around ahead of their treatment or for them to phone up and let us know their worries so that we can put their minds at rest.

CHARITY CALLS FOR GIG HELP The National Foundation for Youth Music is calling on musicians, promoters, venue owners and music fans to put on and attend gigs to support the charity’s work and enable thousands of disadvantaged children and young people have access to life-changing musicmaking opportunities. Whether this is one of a run of nights at London’s 02 by a headline artist, or a small gig in a village pub, Give a Gig will be a fun way to bring musicians, friends and communities together to enjoy music, while raising funds to enable others less fortunate to enjoy it too. Youth Music developed the campaign idea as one of the few charities that uses music as a core part of its work. Youth Music’s Executive Director Matt Griffiths says: “We hope this fundraising campaign offers great flexibility to music fans who might like to give to a charity that uses music to help change lives. We don’t mind who you are or where you are, we welcome all Give a Gig supporters regardless of the size of the gig, the type of music or the amount of money raised. Of course, the bigger the better, but most of all we want people to have fun performing and
attending gigs.” Give a Gig will be supported by a bespoke website that will enable bands, performers, venue owners and promoters to list their event. The site will also host ticketing and venue information, music videos, gig news, info on how to put on a gig, and a dedicated area for fans to review gigs, making it an online resource for fans and artists alike. WeGotTickets are the preferred Give a Gig ticketing partner, and are kindly donating a portion of all their booking fees in June as part of their ‘Give a Gig Month’. Youth Music acknowledges that there may be costs involved in putting on a gig. Matt Griffiths continues: “We’re aware that, in some instances, putting on a gig can cost money – whether it’s for hiring a venue or sound equipment. And some performers taking part in Give a Gig may be professional musicians. While we hope many promoters, bands and musicians might consider offering up their time to Give a Gig for free, if they are able to do so, we fully support musicians who believe they should be properly rewarded for their work. So we are happy for Give a Gig supporters to take essential expenses out of
the money raised. We hope that in these circumstances, those putting on a gig will be fully transparent about their costs with the supporters who come to their event.” Youth Music’s Ambassador, Jen Long, presenter of ‘BBC Introducing’, Radio 1 said: “I’m supporting Give a Gig because Youth Music is one of the few charities that puts music at the core of its work, using it to help thousands of disadvantaged children every year. But for each young person it supports, there’s another one waiting for help. So go on, Give a Gig. If you book them, they will come.” If you’d like to put on a gig to support the work Youth Music does, sign up now at www. giveagig.org.uk.

NEW SCHEME TO MAKE GOLF AS EASY AS 1-2-3! A new scheme has been launched by Sheffield International Venues (SIV) which will go a fairway to getting more people learning, practicing and playing golf! The three-level goGOLF initiative has been designed to provide opportunities for people of all abilities to get involved with the sport. Sessions are delivered by course golf pros - James Gill, who is based at Tinsley Park, Wayne Yellott, at Tinsley Park and Beauchief, Joe Froggatt, who is based at Beauchief Birley Wood-based Jonathan Pyle, and Fame Tate and Craig Pollard, at Tapton Park. Level 1 is aimed at beginners and provides five expert one-to-one golf coaching sessions and access to Birley Wood and Tapton during quieter periods over three months. For improvers, the six-month Level 2 scheme includes five individual golf lessons with an SIV golf professional and places more emphasis on getting out on the course and practicing with the mentoring support of a Qualified

Golf Coach. Level 3 has been created for casual players to focus solely on playing the game with unlimited access to the nine hole course at Tapton and access to all four SIV courses after 1pm. Andy Carnall, SIV golf manager, said: “goGOLF is a new and exciting initiative which has been created to open up the world of golf to as many people as possible. Traditionally, golf is viewed as an elitist, male dominated sport. goGOLF is about breaking that mould and showing how easy and affordable it can be to get into golf. “Golf is a sport that you can start at any stage of life and is a great way to stay fit. The good thing about this scheme is that you can get involved regardless of your experience. “The three different levels provide something for all abilities and for the more enhanced or dedicated player we offer our Golfit membership. So whether you’re new to golf, you have tried it in the past or are reasonably confident and want to get back into the sport, there’s something for everyone.” For more information visit www. sheffieldgolf.co.uk/goGOLFSheffield/, follow @SIVGolf on Twitter or visit https://www. facebook.com/sivgolf.
Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients of the Rotherham Hospital. The station is run almost entirely by volunteers who take part in a variety of activities to keep the station on the air. Our aim is to help patients feel a little better whilst they’re in hospital. One thing that we know is important is maintaining contact with the world outside and that’s why each week we broadcast a What’s On Guide of events happening in the Rotherham area. As the summer events season is just around the corner, we’d be happy to hear about regular and one-off activities from any community group in the Rotherham area. We feature all the events on the Community Calendar page of our website plus as many as possible in the broadcast What’s On Guide. Through the website you can check the details of any event in the What’s On Guide and send us details of any other events in Rotherham that you are organising. There is no cost for including community events in the What’s On Guide and we hope that it will become a valuable community resource, particularly for the smaller organisations who provide such important services for the people of Rotherham. So check out the Community Calendar page on our website to see what’s on in Rotherham or to send us details of other events to add to the diary. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder
Hello and I hope we’re finding you fit and well. So having not been to the Lake District in around 3 years I have now been twice in two weeks, this last weekend the last for a completely different reason...a Stag Do. I play drums in a band and our bassist has decided to settle down and tie the knot. His best man decided that the Lake District would be the best place for him to celebrate. After many miles of slow going traffic we landed at our accomodation. I was hoping for at least a 3 Star B&B but it turned out to be a Minus 2 star Bunk House. At least it had a bed, running water and a pub next door, so not all bad! The order of the day was, first of all absailing down this huge rock face, then a few nerve settlers and an afternoon of gorge walking. This is great if you A) Like Heights and B) Like heights. I’m not a fan of either and I’ll be honest the nerve settlers helped! It was a laugh though and after a few drops of falling down water later that day the trauma soon left my head along with the use of my limbs. As we all staggered like Whitby Crabs back to the Bunk house tired, weary and worst for wear, the minus two star accomodation did look rather inviting! The wedding is mid June, which to be honest is a blessing as it may take me until then to recover! If you are a fan coming soon the Sheffield Lycium is Tonight’s the Night’ – the Rod Stewart musical. I’ve got tickets to give away all week, plus your chance to see Status Quo at Doncaster Racecourse. Just tune in to Magic AM each morning for details on how you could be a winner. If you want more info go to www. magicam.co.uk
THEY WANT YOUR VOTE! CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
We are fast approaching election time. Just in case you’ve been away, in hibernation (and why not?) or nowhere near TV, radio, newspapers or internet lately, May 22nd brings us the European Parliament elections. 73 seats will be contested right across the UK with the results based on proportional representation not the ‘first past the post’ system we have for general elections. To coincide with these elections, we will also be voting at the local council level, so it will be a busy time in the voting booths. Are you going to bother to vote or are these politicians ‘all the same’, just after their own personal gain? It’s hard to tell. Perhaps you can judge for yourself if any of the European or council candidates come into your club to meet members and discuss the matters that concern them. What a sensible idea that seems, politicians talking to ordinary people in one of their own popular spaces- the club. In the past, it would have been taken for granted that politicians would visit clubs in the runup to elections. Even some Conservative candidates turned up in clubs that were hardcore Labour as they saw the benefit of showing their faces and pressing flesh. The WMCIU very early on in its history adopted the policy of neutrality, maintaining a ‘broad church’ approach as far as possible given the largely working class makeup of clubs and their members. This allowed clubs to make up their own minds. Those that really wanted to support the Conservative Party could join their own club organisation. Many clubs were pro-Labour party but by no means all. They welcomed other politicians through the doors to tell them about their proposals. Working people in the past had a lot less free time so politicians visiting them on their home territory was a good idea. Some MPs used local clubs to hold their surgeries in and also as a base come election time. Many a night has been spent in working men’s clubs with prospective local and national politicians nervously whiling away the hours between polling stations closing and the votes counted. Former PM Tony Blair used the Trimdon Labour Club in County Durham as his election base. Not even that close association could save the Club, however, as last orders were called there in July 2010. Trimdon appeared on the television numerous times, especially during election counts, but custom had been dwindling for some time as with many other clubs. Do politicians care about clubs? To be continued!

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS
angler’s corner
by Clint Walker
I’ve struggled a little to find inspiration for the column this week, but after sitting with a mug of tea for a while, (guaranteed to reduce writer’s block) I’ve decided to recount yesterday’s quiet session just because it wasn’t all about the fishing..... After a recent 42lb cat fish capture, already recounted in this column, I thought I’d have another go and try to replicate my earlier success at the same Cheshire venue, Gawsworth Fisheries near Macclesfield. On arrival, I was somewhat surprised to be the only angler on the complex, so had complete freedom of choice to set up, and after a wander, I decided on the first peg I’d seen! Setting up three rods seemed to take an age, but I was determined to get things just right and give myself the maximum opportunity to catch one of only a dozen or so cats within the four acre pool. Each rod was baited differently; a huge chunk of meat on one, large Krill boilies wrapped in paste and studded with pellets on the second, and the final rod baited with popped up worms...with a twist! In addition to air injecting my lobworms, I also inject some liquid flavouring too to give them a bit more oomph. The meat was placed in the margins, under a tree in a likely looking dark hole and covered with some chopped meat and dead maggots, the boilies were cast towards a reedy feature which was teeming with prey fish and the worms deposited in open water. Bobbins set, I sat back to watch the water... although in reality, that seemed to take the form of drinking tea and reading my book! Several fish later, all of them bream of around 3lbs, I was starting to get despondent.... As I fished however, a middle aged chap approached to ask if I would be kind enough to assist him in tying a rig he had seen in a magazine. He told me that he was fairly new to angling and was somewhat confused by all manner of complex rigs which it seemed had to be used to catch fish. As I explained a number of ways to attach a pop up to a chod rig and showed him exactly how to do it using bits from my tackle box, I found that sharing my experience was great fun! The gentleman then returned to his peg, used his newfound knowledge to tie the required rig, and cast out expectantly as I returned to the pages of my tome. I was extremely pleased (jealous!) to hear his alarms screech out a warning within the hour, and after I packed up, I asked how he had been doing. He replied that he had caught several fish, not big fish admittedly, but enough to keep him entertained, and was pleased he had learned something new. Personally, I think I got more satisfaction by helping out a fellow angler than I did by catching a string of bream, especially as he divulged the fact that others had either refused, or been unable to help. I found his last comment disappointing; surely we are all in it together and should help out if we can? I see so many anglers moan about the perceived poor standards of others abilities, but yet fail to help if asked... Consider offering assistance next time you see someone struggling and lend a hand, you may get more from it than you think!

DICKOV AND BROWN THANK THE FANS Manager and striker united in appreciation of supporter’s efforts. Rovers manager Paul Dickov spoke on behalf of the football club in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat to Leicester City when he thanked the fans for their continued support in the face of relegation to League 1. “It’s the fans and the people at the club who I’m really disappointed for because we’ve just been relegated in the last minute and the ovation our fans gave the players was second to none,” he said. “We’ve got a club that’s together and that’s from the top, all the way through and there’ll be a massive effort from everybody to make sure promotion is the main aim next year.” Despite relegation, the Scottish manager – who arrived from Oldham Athletic a year ago – has the full backing of the board and has set his sights on sitting down with the playing staff this week for talks in an attempt to establish the best possible way forward. Rovers’ top goal scorer, Chris Brown, echoed his managers sentiments in also thanking the fans, “They have been [a credit] all season, home and away they were right behind us and it’s obviously a very tough league but I’d like to think that they know that the players are an honest bunch of lads who have given their all in every single game. “If were not good enough then fair enough, but it’s not been through a lack of effort,” he said. When asked about whether he will be in the manager’s plans next term, Brown responded: “I’m hoping so, all being well. I’ve enjoyed this season, personally, but it’s obviously ended in the worst possible way.” Rovers were watched by close to 210,000 spectators in league games at the Keepmoat Stadium throughout the 2013-14 season, with an average gate in excess of 9,000.

ROVERS THE LADS RETURN TO WERE LEAGUE ONE TERRIFIC
A warm sunny afternoon was the scene for the last match of the season away at this season’s Championship Champions before a capacity crowd. Rovers needed a win to guarantee staying in the Championship otherwise they have to rely on Birmingham City losing at Bolton. Rovers made two changes to their starting line-up, with Lucas Neill and James Husband coming in for Billy Sharp and Enda Stevens. The early part of the game was evenly contested and played at quite a sedate pace as each side probed for an opening. A corner to the home team in the 14th minute came to nothing and a couple of free kicks at the other end for Rovers were cleared. In the 23rd minute Phillips, for the home team, squared for King to have a go from 20yards but the latter miskicked and Rovers cleared. Two minutes later and Mahrez cut in from the home right but sliced his shot from just outside of the area wide of the far post. Just before the half hour a free kick to Rovers in the Leicester half was cleared out to Nugent on the home left, with a clear run on goal. As the Rovers defenders scrambled to get back he cut in but Johnstone, coming out to meet him, blocked his shot. Past the half hour and a good run by Coppinger down the middle was eventually stopped about twenty-five yards from goal. Then, Husband, following a rovers attack down the left tried a right foot shot from 25 yards but it lacked power and Schmeichel saved comfortably The 38th minute brought a corner to the home team following good defensive work as Leicester attacked down the right. De Laet headed over the bar. Five minutes later and Quinn, defending soundly at the near post put the ball out for a corner but Johnstone was quickly out to catch well on the penalty spot. Rovers had a fair proportion of play but their crosses to the middle were invariably defended well or caught by Schmeichel. A good half for the Rovers but they hadn’t created any clear chances at the other end. The game re-started in the same vein as the first half then in the 51st minute a ball out of the Rovers defence to Coppinger in the centre circle was moved on to Cotterill on the right. He in turn laid it back to Tamas, who was following the break. He tried his luck from 25yards but Schmeichel saved by diving to his right. Minutes later and Drinkwater had a go from 30yards with a low shot that Johnstone went down to his right to save. Just before the hour a great cheer emanated from the Rovers section as that suggested some good news had come through. In the 64th minute Kevin Phillips, for Leicester, went into retirement when he was substituted by Knockaert. Past the hour and Leicester began to monopolise possession. A corner kick was well caught by Johnstone, who then made a diving save to a shot from Mahrez. In the 69th minute Johnstone was in action again to save brilliantly at the near post when a shot was blasted in from the left. Then, calamity in the 74th minute when Husband brought down Mahrez in the penalty area. NUGENT stepped up and did the necessary to register the first goal of the game. Rovers tried to hit back with a good move down their right but Keegan skied the ball over the bar from the edge of the penalty area as he was challenged. The 83rd minute brought a brilliant save from Johnstone when Knockaert blasted in a shot from the left. Two minutes from normal time a free kick on the Rovers right was placed to the far post by Cotterill where Sharp headed the ball down into the ground and bouncing over the bar. Rovers tried hard to the end but the score remained at 1-0 giving the home team a win in their last game in the Championship. News from Bolton meant that the Rovers were relegated to League 1 after just one season.
Manager Steve Evans praised his Rotherham United side for ending their regular season on a high after a 2-1 success at Swindon Town. A first half brace by Wes Thomas ensured the Millers ended the campaign in fourth place and will entertain Preston North End in the play-offs with the first leg on Saturday 10th May, kick off 5.15pm at Deepdale. After a second half fightback by the home side which saw the Robins pull a goal back through a Michael Smith penalty, the Millers re-took control of proceedings ensuring another three points away from home. “We made some big changes to the side to allow some individuals the opportunity to stake a claim and I thought we were terrific, the first-half was exceptional,” said a jubilant Evans after the game. “We should have had the game done and dusted such was the dominance but to be fair to Mark (Cooper) he changed some things around, they got a goal and to be fair they put us under a little bit of pressure. The boys stood strong, we counter attacked with pace and we got another win on the road which as we know in League One they are hard to get.” Evans made several changes to his side allowing the likes of Thomas a start and he praised his matchwinner as well as several other starters who came into the side. “I thought he (Wes Thomas) was excellent but I also thought that Rob Millsom was excellent as well, he just ran out of legs a little. The plan was always to give him 65-70 minutes and then introduce Michael (O’Connor) so that was good and it was good to play James Tavernier further forward, he did a great job and I don’t think Richard Brindley had a problem all afternoon. Also for me I don’t think that there was anyone better than Claude Davis, I thought he came in and did well, his winning record is staggering, when he plays we win.”

County Senior League There was much drama midweek in the U21 Division. Treeton Terriers U21 hosted Valley Knights U21 at Meadowhall Soccer Centre knowing they needed all three points to claim the title. Anything less than three points and the Championship would be Swallownest Miners Welfare U21’s. Things started well for Treeton as they led 2-0 at half-time, but disaster struck as they surrendered their lead in the second half, and in the end lost 3-2. Swallownest’s league title adds to the U21 Cup they won in early April. Premier Division Winners Handsworth fielded a youthful looking line-up on Wednesday, as they travelled to Wombwell Main. It was a policy that worked, as 16 year old Kyle Lilley scored four times to help Handsworth to a 7-0 win. The future certainly looks well for Handsworth, with 22 year old Alex Rippon (2) and 21 year old Samuel McKay also on the score-sheet. Division Two Winners North Gawber Colliery finished their season by extending their unbeaten run to 16 games, with a 3-1 win over mid-table Sheffield FC Reserves. Jordan Lodge starred for North Gawber scoring twice. Sheffield Lane Top reaffirmed their fourth place finish in Division Two with a 3-2 home win over Bramley Sunnyside on Monday night. Bradley Clarke, Todd Guest and Adam Johnson were all on target for Sheffield Lane Top There is only one game left in the County Senior League. That will take place on Monday 12th May, when Bramley Sunnyside host Carribean Sports in Division Two. Meadowhall League Tinsley Trophy Final Penistone Church put behind them their poor league form to claim the Tinsley Trophy on Wednesday night at the Look Local Stadium. Penistone were 2-1 winners over fellow Division One side Jack-ina-Box. Premier Division Hackenthorpe B knew on Thursday night only a win would be enough if they were to catch Rawson Spring and win the Premier Division. A win is what they got, with an impressive 7-2 win over Wadsley Bridge WMC at Swallownest Miners Welfare Ground. Hackenthorpe win the title on goal difference and leave Rawson Spring ruing losing their final two league games of the season, but they do have time to make some amends on Wednesday night when they face Joker FC in the Senior Cup Final. Crookes clinched fourth place in the Premier Division with back-to-back wins this week. On Thursday they were 3-0 winners away against Arundel. They followed that up on Sunday with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Wadsley Bridge WMC at Chaucer Sports Centre. Division One Division One Winners High Noon completed an unbeaten league season on Thursday, with a routine 3-0 home win over Hurlfield. Packhorse Inn put themselves in pole position for second place, with two wins this week. They were 4-1 winners at home against HSBC midweek, and then completed their fixtures with a 3-1 away win over Hackenthorpe B. Packhorse end the season unbeaten in seven league games. Tinsley Trophy Runner’s up Jack-in-a-Box still have a slim chance of second place after Jason Short strike gave them a 1-0 win over Hurlfield on Sunday. Jack-in-a-Box will need to win their final game at home to fourth placed City Taxis and a 13 goal swing in order to claim second position in the standings. It was a case of after the Lord’s Mayor Parade for Penistone Church. They won the Tinsley Trophy on Thursday night, but slipped to their 12th loss of the season on Sunday, as they lost 4-2 at home to City Taxis. Division Two Ridgeway Athletic ended a run of four games without a win, with a 4-1 away win over Bystrany Sheffield. Wesley Hewitt grabbed a hat-trick for SWD, as they beat Cricketers 2012 7-0 at Springs Academy. SWD sit in third position, just two points off Mosbrough’s lead. There is only one game left in Division Two, which SWD v Ridgeway Athletic, so SWD know only a victory will see them league winners. U21 Division Mosborough U21 registered back-to-back 4-0 home wins this week. They beat high-flyers Brampton Dynamos U21 on Thursday night, and then followed up with more of the same again on Sunday against Sharrow United U21. Brampton Dynamos U21 bounced back from the aforementioned loss to Mosborough, with a 4-0 away win over second bottom Double Top U21 on Sunday. The win was enough to keep Brampton in second place. Miles Howarth scored twice for Abbey Lane U21 to inspire them to a 4-2 victory over Wisewood Hounds U21 at the Boundary Club. Abbey Lane remain in third place.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS SEASON FIZZLES OUT AT IPSWICH SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
The Owls signed off the 2013/14 Championship campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday. Tommy Smith set the ball rolling for the home side, finishing on the rebound before half time but Kieran Lee equalised with his maiden goal for the Owls after the break. But the Tractor Boys went on to claim the win with Paul Green on target with a glancing header from a free kick, as Mick McCarthy’s men finish just three points outside of the play-offs. Ipswich saw their hopes of a top-six finish come to an end last week after defeat at Burnley and almost fell behind to an early goal. The ball fell kindly to Michail Antonio in the area on the left but the winger blazed high over the crossbar. The Tractor Boys, though, responded with a positive move of their own as the lively Jonny Williams burst into the area at pace, only to be thwarted by a crunching Glenn Loovens challenge. But Wednesday were powerless to prevent the opening goal of the half in the 36th minute after a spell of heavy pressure from the hosts. Daryl Murphy sent a curling effort towards goal that Damian Martinez did well to keep out with a firm hand but Smith mopped up the rebound from close range to give Ipswich the advantage.
Buoyed by the breakthrough, Ipswich came within the width of the upright from adding a swift second goal to their tally. Murphy went on a mazy run and after cutting inside the area from the right, blasted against the inside of the post and Wednesday were able to clear the danger. Moments before the interval, exIpswich man Caolan Lavery brought a fine save from Dean Gerken and from the resulting corner, Antonio almost found a route to goal but Gerken made another key reaction save to keep his side in front heading down the tunnel. Dangerman Murphy planted a firm header just over the top after the restart as Ipswich aimed to strengthen their hold on the game. But the Tractor Boys were made to pay for that miss as the Owls levelled with the next attack. Chris Maguire delivered a low centre from the left and as Lavery miscued in the middle, Lee was on the spot to
sweep home into the bottom corner. In the moments that followed, Wednesday largely had the upper hand but Ipswich were able to ride that brief storm and regain their lead from a set piece. Substitute Stephen Hunt delivered from the right and Green glanced into the far corner out of Martinez’ reach. Still, there were chances at both ends and the returning Jacques Maghoma dragged just wide of the near post for Wednesday but Ipswich held on to record their 12th home win of the campaign. Ipswich: Gerken, Cresswell, Chambers, Smith (Taylor 64), Berra, Murphy, Wordsworth, Green, Richardson, Williams (Hunt 64), Nouble (Marriott 86) Owls: Martinez, Lee, Loovens, Onyewu, Mattock (Helan 75), Antonio, Coke (Maghoma 81), Lavery, Maguire, Hutchinson, Nuhiu (Best 61)

The Owls ended their 2013/14 campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Ipswich on Saturday but Stuart Gray said his side were good value for at least a point in Suffolk. An entertaining end of season contest saw the Tractor Boys come out on top, although on chances created, Wednesday deserved a share of the spoils. He said: “My analyst tells me we had 21 shots on goal and you can’t ask for much more than that away from home. “Their goalkeeper made a fantastic double save right on half time and if one of those goes in, it might have been a different story. “When we did score, we deserved it and I thought we would go on and win the game. But Ipswich scored from a free kick and after that we had plenty of possession but couldn’t quite make the breakthrough.” On the positive side, Gray was pleased with Kieran Lee’s first goal in Wednesday colours. The former Oldham man cancelled out the Ipswich opener by Tommy Smith and Gray said: “I was really pleased for Kieran because he deserves it. He’s a selfless footballer and a real team player. “I don’t think he knew how to celebrate, though! But seriously, I think you could see with the way the team reacted and the way the bench reacted how popular a lad he is. “As I say, It’s just a shame we couldn’t go on and get something out of the game.” Off the field, Gray confirmed that he will conduct individual meetings with the players at Middlewood Road on Sunday. With a good number out of contract this summer, key decisions have already been made and the squad will soon learn their fate. He added: “It’s never a pleasant task but one that is part and parcel of being at a football club. “There will be players leaving and they will be the first to know before the club make a statement probably around the middle of next week.”

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 13-14 UNBEATEN FINISH TO THE SEASON FOR BLADES MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
The Blades finished the league season eight unbeaten and in seventh position in Sky Bet League One after a final day victory over Coventry City. Despite trailing at the final whistle, Ryan Flynn celebrated his new contract with a goal and substitute Ben Davies netted United’s final goal of the season. Conor Coady, in his final game before his loan spell expires, claimed assists in both goal. Clough continued with the policy of naming his strongest possible team, Collins returned from injury to take his place in the heart of the defence, replacing Kennedy. On his 50th appearance for the Blades, Coady produced the first meaningful chance of the game and although his 25-yard effort was on target, goalkeeper Murphy collected comfortably. The exchanges early on had a distinct feel, although Brayford was looking to get forward at every opportunity. Coady’s appeals for a penalty following a challenge by Willis were waved away and Coventry’s first chance arrived on the half hour after a Collins pass failed to reach Murphy but Doyle blocked Wilson’s shot. Twice, in the space of a minute, skipper Doyle went close to scoring against his former club. He was unmarked as he headed Baxter’s cross at Murphy and the visiting goalkeeper pushed away a longrange shot soon after. Fleck then had a long range shot saved by Howard before the visitors took the lead on 39 minutes. Fleck held off Coady to
SEASON TICKET PRICES ANNOUNCED MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk
That’s the message to Sheffield United supporters today as the Club launches its 2014-15 season ticket offer. “It will be a special time to be a season ticket holder and be part of Sheffield’s red and white,” said Managing Director Mal Brannigan. “Our season ticket offer has something for everyone in the year that the Club celebrates its past and focuses on the future. The details have been announced later than normal as we were conscious of the financial demands that were placed on fans during the recent and successful FA Cup run. The unusually late Early Bird pricing date has been set so that it should ease the pressure on everyone’s budget.” In addition to next season seeing the Club continue its 125 year anniversary celebrations, Bramall Lane will be marking the 160th year of being the oldest professional football ground in the world. Once again the Club is making it quick and easy to get the great deals. Examples include an adult season ticket for the Kennedys Kop Stand starting from £305
thread a pass through for DELFOUNESO to outmuscle Freeman and slot under the Blades goalkeeper. Before the interval there was a halfchance for both sides but neither Flynn nor Wilson were able to influence the scorers. Porter was introduced at the start of the second half, replacing Scougall, who needed treatment for a knock in the first half, but the first chance after the break was the result of Brayford’s marauding run, although Murphy emerged from his line to save with his feet. United had to wait 62 minutes before levelling, but it was a good move which opened up the visitors. FLYNN’s turn beat Fleck and after exchanging passes with Coady, the Scotsman cut in and beat Murphy with a low effort. Clough replaced Baxter with Davies and it was to prove instrumental with United’s next significant attack. On 73 minutes Coady powered through a challenge with Webster and picked his moment ahead of laying off to an unmarked DAVIES, who delicately slotted into the corner of the net.
under the early bird pricing scheme, effectively meaning eight free games based on savings made against match day ticket prices and in the South and John Street Stands, early bird prices start from £415. Other features of the early bird season ticket package include: • Concessionary prices for the over 60s • An under 17 (raised from under 16) season ticket from £35 - just over £1.50 per game • A young adult (under 22) ticket from £145 • The introduction of new family friendly ticket (not currently available online) • Early bird pricing offers for returning and first time season ticket holders • The option to spread the cost over 10 monthly payments To mark the 125th Anniversary for season ticket holders, the Club will be organising a small number of Blades History Maker events. There will be a 125th Anniversary Commemorative Book displayed in the Legends of the Lane, identifying all those fans purchasing a season ticket this season, who also receive commemorative 125th Anniversary pin badges. Manager Nigel Clough said: “Personally I cannot wait for the start of the new season. Contract talks are going well with a number of players, we have identified
Collins was United’s first booking on 76 minutes, for a foul on Wilson, and the Blades defender headed over a cross from Davies as the Blades looked for a third. Doyle tried his luck from 40 yards soon after and Murphy looked worried but the effort was off target. Hill replaced Freeman in the closing stages and despite the game being stretched, as Coventry searched for an equaliser, there was little to report before the final whistle, apart from an air of optimism for the 2014-15 campaign. Blades: Howard, Brayford, Maguire, Flynn, Doyle, Baxter (Davies 65), Collins, Coady, Scougall (Porter 45), Murphy, Freeman (Hill 87). Unused: McGinn, Paynter, Long, Dimaio. Coventry: Murphy, Christie, Webster, Thomas (Baker 77), Fleck, Delfouneso, Prutton (Eccleston 84), Willis, Wilson, Clarke, Marshall. Unused: Adams, McGeouch, Burgh, Seaborne, Finch.
others who we want with us next season and we have an exciting number of young players. “Our fans are special. We saw that at Wembley, we saw it in the second half of the season as we climbed the league table. The supporters were really vocal and got behind the team. Bramall Lane is a terrific place to be and we cannot thank the supporters enough for their backing, especially the season ticket holders whose commitment is invaluable.” Season tickets are available to buy from Tuesday 6 May. Details on pricing, benefit and payment options can be found at www.sufc.co.uk where there is also a special video message from Nigel Clough. The early bird deadline is Monday 30 June, 2014. All season tickets bought by this date qualify for discounts. Purchases can also be made by calling 0871 995 1889 (a £2.50 booking fee applies) or by visiting the Bramall Lane ticket office.

Nigel Clough was delighted to see his team end the 2013/14 Sky Bet League One season with a ‘deserved’ victory over Coventry City at Bramall Lane. Nathan Delfouneso put the Sky Blues in front in the first-half, but second-half goals from Ryan Flynn and Ben Davies, both assisted by Conor Coady paved the way for three points that ensured United finished in seventh place in the table. On the victory over Steven Pressley’s City, Clough remarked: “The second-half performance was excellent, we got on the front foot from the restart and desevadly won the game in the end. “We have taken our time to get into games as tired legs have taken affect recently, but once we found our stride after going behind before the break we never looked backed again. “Stefan (Scougall) took a whack on his shin that’s why he was withdrawn, but we always wanted to get Chris (Porter) on at half-time and partner him up front with Jamie Murphy, so that wasn’t a major problem.” Clough concluded by saying he was pleased with the Blades strong finish to the campaign, following the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Hull City at Wembley last month. The Gaffer added: “I have said for a number of weeks we want to finish as high as possible and given the start of the season we can be very proud to have ended the season in seventh spot. “Our run has suprised a lot of people, especially given where we were after the defeat at Crewe and nobody could have seen a ten game winning run coming just around the corner, but the belief within the squad has been fantastic. “The players we have brought in to supplement the squad have been tremendous and they deserve a lot of credit, but the lads that have been here all season have also lifted their performances consistently since the turn of the year.”
