Copley’s Column
Surprise guests are nothing new at the Chantry Hotel, Dronfield, owned by showbusiness legends Roy and Jackie Toaduff and the home of celebrity breakfast, the highlight of my week. This week saw Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott arrive for the making of a music video by ex Radio Sheffield producer Lee Ford who now has his own television and video production company. Joe has joined up with ex members of the Choirboys to for a band Down ‘n’ Outs. The band are currently making an album of Mott the Hoople covers which includes a track where Joe Elliott plays a song on a grand piano and the audience, extra seated at dining tables in the hotel, completely ignore him. Joe was desperate to find a suitable location for the shoot and got in touch with Gary Sinclair who pointed him in the direction of the beautiful white grand piano at the Chantry. Jackie, who is eighty one year’s young this week amazed me on Thursday morning with his knowledge of Joe Elliott. A very popular couple at celebrity breakfast are the wonderful pianist and musical director Terry Herrington and his lovely wife Lidiya who has been telling me for a long time bout a book she was writing about the life of her late mother. Before her death, Lidiya’s mother gave her some audio cassette tapes. These told an extraordinary story of life around the time of the German invasion of Ukraine at the start of the second World War and being sent to work in German Labour Camps. This book is a very moving and harrowing story of their lives. They were liberated in 1945 and settled at Darfield. On Thursday, Lidiya arrived with some copies of the book and I was quick to be first in the queue to purchase a copy. I have not
at the time of writing had time to read this fascinating story but I am really looking forward to doing so this week. The Past week has been excellent on the entertainment front with Emma Rossi starting the proceedings with her regular monthly sot at the Green Dragon, Dronfield. Previous landlady, Veronica Tomlinson, has returned to take over the helm again and has revived the fortunes of the pub. Giving a monthly residency to Emma Rossi is a sure-fire way to guarantee a busy night. Russ Dennett’s open mic night continues to flourish as does Thursday night at the Victoria, where popular regular entertainer John Alex continues to ensure a full pub. On Saturday night, I met my pal, Kevan Smith, at the Abbey Hotel, Woodseats where the boss Martin had ambitiously employed top Abba tribute Agnetha and Frida as the cabaret for the evening and what a successful evening it turned out to be.

Some kids stopped me outside the shop earlier and said, “Excuse me, mate, could you, please, go in there and buy a bottle of Cider?” “Of course!” I smiled, as they handed me a fiver. Such generous lads. It’s a little known scientific fact that if you removed all your veins from your body and laid them end to end. You would die. I was in the pub, drinking a distilled, aniseflavoured beverage when I hallucinated a giant effigy of Cat Ballou sprouting out of my backside. Apparently, absinthe makes the arse grow Fonda. These energy companies must be making a clean fortune. With the amount of unpaid bill warning notices they send me in the post, they could have paid the bill themselves. So it turns out having a bearded lady is the key to winning Eurovision. My nan should have a bloody good chance then next year if she’s still alive. I see Richard Branson plans to develop a plane that can fly from New York to Tokyo in one hour. Apparently, the engines are powered by human screams. Bloke from Barnsley with piles asks chemist “Nah then lad, does tha sell arse cream?” Chemist replies “Aye, Magnum or Cornetto?” Someone keeps adding soil to my allotment overnight. It’s an absolute mystery as to why though. The plot thickens... My mate Harry hates my stutter. He always thinks I’m laughing at him. I went to my doctor and said,”My right buttock looks like Tom Jones’s face.” “Believe it or not,” He replied,”It’s not unusual.” Rocker Ozzy Osbourne cannot convert part of his Buckinghamshire estate until he can protect the bats which live there, the council says. Talk about Karma.

The first demonstration is scheduled for 2019, when it finishes rewinding.

HAVE YOUR SAY IN LOCAL ELECTIONS Sheffielders will be able to have their say on how their city is run in May’s elections and also decide who will represent them in the European Parliament. This year’s local council elections will be held on Thursday 22 May, with a third of Sheffield’s seats being contested – a total of 28 altogether. People voting in Walkley will be voting for two councillors following Cllr Nikki Sharpe’s recent resignation. The results of these elections will be announced on Friday 23 May. The local elections are being held a little later than usual this year to coincide with the European elections. The elections for the six European seats in Yorkshire and Humberside are held every five years and the counts for the European elections will take place on Sunday 25 May, with the results being announced in Leeds. Local councils are responsible for a wide range of services that you use and rely on every day - from housing to street lighting, education to pub licensing, parking to sports facilities, and park maintenance to care for the elderly. That’s why your vote can make a real difference.
John Mothersole, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, is the Returning Officer again this year. He advised voters: “Don’t miss this chance to have your say about the issues that affect your everyday life. It only takes a few minutes out of your day to vote, and postal voting makes it even quicker and more accessible. Your vote will influence decisions made in Sheffield and within your local area.” VOTE MATCH FOR EURO ELECTION This is a quiz which lets you compare your views with the policies of the parties who are standing in the current Euro election. It is Unlock Democracy’s contribution to informing voters. Easy to do, and outcome may surprise you!

may be entitled to financial support and a range of other support from the Local Authority. In such circumstances the Local Authorities should pay in line with the National Minimum Foster [NMA] care allowances which is recommended by the government as best practice. These weekly amounts will differ depending on the child’s age. If the child is under 1 year old then they should pay you £116 each week and up to £175 each week if the child is between 16 and 18. The Local Authority should also make an assessment for you as grandparent foster carers. This does not mean that you have to take any other children into your care, it simply means you are a foster carer of the Local Authority for your grandchildren. If you are caring for your grandchildren but you have already obtained either a Special Guardianship Order or a Residence Order you could still be entitled to financial support from the Local Authority. The amounts which can be paid under these orders are dependent on your income. Under regulation 6 of the Special Guardianship Regulations (2005) the Local Authority can pay financial support to a Special Guardian or a prospective Special Guardian. This would be to do things to facilitate arrangements for a person to become a Special Guardian to support the continuation of this arrangement and where the Local Authority considers that it is necessary to ensure the Special Guardian or prospective Special Guardian can look after the child. Financial support for those who have a Residence Order Schedule 1 paragraph 15 of the Children Act states where a child lives or is to live with a person as a result of a Residence Order a Local Authority may make contributions to that person towards the costs of accommodation and maintenance of the child. It is worth seeking out legal advice to confirm what your legal rights are in these circumstances and if you would be entitled to financial support and other support from the Local Authority to help both you and the children’s future.

With a laugh-out-loud script written by multi award-winning writer and comedian Ben Elton (We Will Rock You), and featuring spectacular staging, a world class band, dazzling choreography and over 20 classic Rod Stewart hits like Tonight’s The Night, Dynamite, Da Ya Think I’m Sexy, Maggie May, Forever Young and Sailing, this feel-good show comes to the Lyceum Theatre from Tuesday 27 until Saturday 31 May as part of its 2014 tour. Starring Jade Ewen (Sugababes), Tonight’s The Night is set on the mean streets of Detroit and in the glamorous clubs of uptown LA. The show tells the story of Stu, a shy young man so tongue tied that he cannot find the courage to declare his love to the girl of his dreams. How different he is to his hero, that legendary rock ‘n’ roll vagabond Rod Stewart. One night Stu strikes a deal with the Devil, trading his soul for Rod’s, which seems like a good idea at the time but he finds out the hard way that you can’t find true love using another man’s moves, and that there’s only one Rod Stewart! Rod Stewart said: ‘In the past, any ideas for musicals revolving around my songs just didn’t work for me. It was only when we were approached by Ben Elton that the idea really took off. I’m absolutely thrilled that Tonight’s The Night is touring the UK again.’ Ben Elton said: ‘Rod is such a totally unique artist. I initially approached him about a musical because his songs are all about storytelling and I felt that a great story could grow from them.’ Tonight’s The Night comes to the Lyceum Theatre from Tuesday 27 – Saturday 31 May. Tickets are on sale now, priced from £24.00 – £34.00 and can be purchased from Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office in person, by calling 0114 249 6000, and online at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk. A transaction fee of £1.50 (£1.00 online) applies to all bookings made at the Box Office, excluding cash.

be fantastic to do the same for the runners.” On the same day, budding sport stars aged from three to fifteen will take on the Bupa Junior & Mini Great Yorkshire Run, completing 1.5k and 2.5k courses. Live music will also be staged in the Sheffield Peace Gardens as part of the annual Sensoria Festival.
Freestyle skier and Sochi 2014 Olympian Katie Summerhayes was joined by runners in Sheffield last week to launch the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run. The Sheffield-born athlete, 18, who was recently crowned the Junior World Slopestyle Champion, will be the honorary starter for the event on Sunday 28 September. Around six thousand runners will set off from Arundel Gate in the city centre for running’s War of the Roses. Every year participants pledge their allegiance to Yorkshire or Lancashire and enter the battle to become the faster county over the 10k. The county that completes the course in the fastest average time wins the War of the Roses trophy – with Lancashire currently holding the title. The Yorkshire-girl, who placed seventh in the Ski Slopestyle final in Sochi visited the Peace Gardens and was accompanied by runners who will take part in the event, which returns for its eighth staging in the autumn. She said: “I am really looking forward to being a part of the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run and setting all the runners on their way in September. I got so much support from the people of Yorkshire when I competed in Sochi and it’s going to

WILL-ING SOLICITORS AT WOSSKOW BROWN RAISE THOUSANDS FOR WILL AID Hard working and generous solicitors at Wosskow Brown Solicitors, with branches in Barnsley and Sheffield, recently took part in Will Aid 2013 and are delighted to announce a fabulous fundraising total of more than £7,700 (including Gift Aid) to date, to contribute to the nationwide 25th anniversary total. At present, the firm is the sixth highest fundraising firm in Yorkshire and in the top 30 nationally out of nearly 1500 firms. The firm raised this fantastic sum by writing more than 125 Wills. Will Aid is the UK’s leading charity will-writing scheme. It offers everyone the opportunity to make or update their Will in return for a donation to help people in need in the UK and all over the world. This money is shared by nine well-known UK charities: ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (Northern Ireland). Ruth Tormey from Christian Aid visited the firm’s offices to thank the team for all their hard work. She said: “The support of Wosskow Brown Solicitors is greatly appreciated
by Christian Aid. Will Aid is very important to Christian Aid as not only do we receive a significant amount in donations but the campaign also provides an opportunity for people to leave Christian Aid a legacy. Legacy gifts are crucial in enabling our work to eradicate poverty and change the systems and structures which cause it. Legacies of all sizes are incredibly valuable to Christian Aid – last year our income from legacies could have more than paid for all our work in Latin America and the Caribbean – making a lasting difference to thousands of lives.” Wosskow Brown has participated in three Will Aid campaigns and has written hundreds of Wills
for people locally. In total, they have raised a grand total of over £13,300. Mrs Emilda Eaton, Partner and Head of Private Client Department at Wosskow Brown, commented: “We are proud to be involved and to have raised so much money. It is wonderful to raise awareness of the need for people to write a Will and to support charity at the same time. ” The scheme runs again in November 2014 and will provide the opportunity for many more people in need of a Will to come forward to sort out their affairs and, at the same time, to support nine of the UK’s best loved charities.

My husband Brian and myself with our friends Evelyn and Eric came along and joined the excited crowd, what a superb job you did. The icing on the cake was Lorrie Brown (Vera Lynn) and her husband Gary (Warden Braithwaite) who should have been called Brilliant Braithwaite! What a perfect show and a superb couple. It was a wonderful singa-long thats had everyone flag waving and we truly didn’t want it to end, also having it in the

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
Telephone 0114 233 7941 • www.sofcltd.co.uk
Radio Nightingale is on the search for new volunteers who can be involved in helping to provide our special service to cheer up the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. We’re particularly looking for someone who has some graphic design skills and experience to help with our promotional items. We produce a range of items to promote the service and our fundraising ventures which are in need of development. This volunteer role can be really flexible as it could be completed from home, although it would be helpful if regular visits to the studio were possible. We’re also looking for someone to help out on Wednesday’s between 9am and 2pm. This volunteer would help with answering phones, processing patient requests and retrieving CD’s as a minimum. Volunteers interested in developing other skills in general administration or audio production may have the opportunity to do so in this role. It has been medically proven that ‘doing good’ can give you a heightened sense of well being and a stronger immune system so volunteering is good for the soul. Plus of course it can also put you on track to improve your career. Whether you’re currently studying, in work or out of work volunteering is a great way to develop new skills, build your confidence and show future employers that you’ve got drive and initiative. Over 70% of employers say that they would hire a candidate with volunteering experience over someone who has never volunteered. Volunteering offers the chance to have amazing experiences, make friends with people from all walks of life, and who knows, perhaps even find love! Remember though that if you want to use volunteering to develop your career, treat it as work, not a hobby. If you would like to find out more or get involved in Radio Nightingale contact us on 01709 304244 or apply online on our website www. radionightingale.org.uk
afternoon 12-4pm meant it was perfect timing. Once again a million thanks Mandy for this most memorable and wonderful show. Anyone that hasn’t seen this Vera Lynn tribute must certainly try and get along to this wonderful show! The Fairways Inn must also get a mention too with all the wonderful, caring staff looking after us very well as always. Thank you so much to all of you again, “THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES” Take Care & God Bless, Barbara x Our next ‘A Tribute to Vera Lynn’ show is at The Sitwell Arms on Thursday 24th July. NO SUCH THING AS BAD WEATHER MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder
After a weekend of trolling round with my little lad and trying to find something to do which suits the very changeable weather we had of late. We opted for a soft play area one day, which at the time, my wife and I thought it’d be best because of the rain. Our son loved it and there were tears when he had to leave. We ended up leaving with a headache.. The following day we took him swimming followed by a trip on steam train. He was very excited by this as the train set off, the engine seemed to be ‘running rough’ as a mechanic would put it. I had decided it would be more fun to stand at the back on the open bit to get the ‘full experience’. We certainly got that as we went through a tunnel, we got off the train looking like chimney sweeps! As the weather takes a turn for the better in the next few days I heard that bookies are slashing the odds that we will get a hosepipe ban this year. However a survey by Brittish universities has discovered hosepipe bans might actually be a waste of time – why? Well less than one if five of us has a hosepipe – 30% of us say they have nothing in their garden that needs hosing – 48% of us don’t water the garden ever and 20% of us use jugs or watering cans to water the garden anyway and i’m guessing the other 2% just can’t be bothered. There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. ~Alfred Wainwright This weekend The Searchers play York Barbican and tomorrow at 8:20am you could win tickets. Just tune in to Magic AM each morning for details on how you could be a winner.
THEY WANT YOUR VOTE PART 2 CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
The European and local elections are upon us. Have you decided if you’re going to vote? Last week some links between politics and working men’s clubs were highlighted. That piece ended with the question of whether politicians care about clubs anymore. Tony Blair might have used the Trimdon Labour Club when his parliamentary seat was Durham-based but did he pop in for a pint afterwards? Its closure followed not so long after his departure from Number 10. The WMCIU doesn’t want to pin its colours to any one political party and much good work is done through the All Party Parliamentary Committee. Labour, Conservative and other MPs can be found in that group just as they might be found in clubs up and down the country. But it’s clear that many of the links with local and national politicians have been lost. It was very common in the interwar and post-war periods to read about Lord Mayors who had served as local councillors after starting off on the factory floor, down the mine, or in some other form of industry. Many had strong club allegiances and had been on club committees. There was a bias towards the Labour Party where such strong links between club democracy, trade union activism and politics existed but they were not all leftwing inclined. Well-run clubs were often proud of producing local councillors, Lord Mayors and even MPs. There won’t be so many such candidates when you vote on May 22nd. There is a widespread view that the majority of politicians at all levels don’t understand what clubs are about let alone know anything about their members. Clubs could do more in that respect: where this is the case, local politicians could be invited along to visit, to see what goes on and meet the members. The WMCIU has offered that advice. The old insights that many politicians had about club life, which they may have grown up with themselves, have largely disappeared. Perhaps we need to work hard to nurture these again. Nigel Farage, leader of the UKIP, which is riding high in the polls, is often photographed with a pint and a fag in hand but usually in a pub. If he cares about pubs, then he should care about clubs too. He and his party may not be your preferred choice but it’s important to let all political party know that clubs are still around, sometimes struggling due to certain policies that disadvantage them.

SHEFFIELD AGAINST THE BIG GUNS AT DOWNLOAD 2014 Preview: Download Festival, 13-15/06/14, Donnington Park By Kt Evans
Download Festival…how we love you. How we love your awesome taste in music, your ridiculously unhealthy obsession with chips and your fascination with Jagermeister. How we admire your loyal friendship and kick ass parties you hold for us every year. You always make us smile, Download Festival, you have such a cheeky Northern charm even though you invite guests from all over the world…13th June…be ready…Download Festival is on its way. If you have yet to be touched by the legend that is Download Festival, we strongly suggest you jump on board this year’s action, held from 13-15th June at Donnington Park, East Midlands. One of the best rock festivals the world has ever seen, for one weekend only, the flight path of East Midlands airport is transformed into rock mecca for all to appreciate. So to the line-up… If we had to sum up the line-up of Download festival in one word it would be this…amazing. Tantalizing ear drums with a mix of hardcore,
black metal, pop punk, alt rock and pretty much everything else in between, the event prides itself on supplying the UK with the very best acts through a massive selection of genres. Spread out across five stages, Sheffield this year is represented by a string of acts we’re pretty sure will make you beam with pride. Sheffield is famed for many things; Hendersons Relish, Steel works, Bring Me The Horizon… seizing the main stage on Saturday 14th June, the Sheffield hardcore clan have fast become the steel cities proudest export. In the midst of touring their massive fourth studio album ‘Sempiternal’ released April 2013, the group never fail to deliver on a collosal scale both through the stereo and live on stage. Sheffield’s Malevolence are also set to play on the Red Bull live stage. Drawing influences from early 90’s NYC hardcore, the group have both an enormous back catalogue and dedicated fan base in abundance. Keeping it in the region, Yorkshire’s Marmozets are performing on the Pepsi Maxx Stage. Set to release their debut album in the next few months, lead vocalist Becca Macintyre takes everyone on a twisted journey on the Marmozet rollercoaster to succumb to a show we guarantee you won’t want to miss. The headliners for Download Festival 2014 include: Fall Out Boy, Aerosmith, Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, Status Quo, The Off Spring, Trivium and many more. Check out www. downloadfestival.co.uk for full info.
EX-CROWE MARC FORD FLIES INTO THE CORPORATION Preview: Marc Ford, 27/05/14, Corporation By Kt Evans
Sheffield’s very own Bring Me The Horizon line up alongside Aerosmith & More at this year’s Download
Regarded as one of the most legendary rock guitarists of all time, Marc Ford, former lead guitarist of rock and roll group the Black Crowes is set to perform at Sheffield’s Corporation on 27th May. With a string of UK dates to coincide
with the release of his brand new solo album ‘Holy Ghost,’ the highly acclaimed US legend marks over twenty years in the business with his forthcoming nationwide string of live shows. There are a whole host of strings attached to Marc Ford’s bow ensuring the musician is on the very top of his game…a former lead guitarist of US rock group Black Crowes, Ford has also been a session player with Govt, Mule and Ben Harper alongside producing hits with the likes of Ryan Bingham and Phantom Limb. Now taking his own path of musicianship with the release of his solo album ‘Holy Ghost,’ the record incorporates the rock and roll sound of a nation with tremendous effect. Speaking of his new album, Marc Ford says: “It’s hopeful, in a dark way sometimes. It’s the work of an artist who’s found the inner strength to recharge, personally and professionally. It’s a reflection of my life.” But how did the writing, recording and mixing process of the album come about? After producing Phantom Lomb’s second album back in 2012, Ford asked the band’s Stew Jackson to quite simply,…return the favour! And the result? Well, who wouldn’t of said yes?! Jackson helped Ford create a career landmark, with Marc’s wife Kirsten contributing vocals and son Elijah, who had been working with Jackson on his own album project, adding guitars. A family affair you could say… Ford, now living the quieter life in the Californian surf town of San Clemente, says: “One day it just dawned on me, wait a minute, Phantom Limb is the perfect band for this. I said ‘Stew, you allowed me to pull your baby apart and put it back together. I’ve never had a producer produce my own stuff. How about payback? You can do me now. I think I have some of the best songs I’ve ever written, and you’ve got a bitchin’ band.’ He just said ‘Get here.’” Bigger, bolder and a hell of a load more emotionally driven to what you may coin together with Marc Ford, ‘Holy Ghost’ is both massive through the stereo whilst live on stage. Set to smash his way through a string of UK live dates to include Manchester, Coventry and London, Marc Ford is performing at Sheffield’s Corporation on 27th May. www.corporation.org.uk

WE’RE CALLING TIME Greene King, proud sponsor of ‘For One Night Only’ is one of the leading pub and brewing companies in the UK working with over 2,300 managed, tenanted, leased and franchised pubs, restaurants and hotels across the country. Starting out as a family brewing business back in 1799, Greene King’s success has continued to grow into the 21st century, working with more and more premises year on year. They have been brewing awardwinning ales for more than 200 years and have developed a reputation as a company that delivers excellent value, service and quality to their wide range
ON CANCER of customers – from pub goers and hotel guests to licensees, supermarkets and national pub chains.
Mark Lonsdale, Sales Development Manager at Greene King (pictured) works with premises throughout South and West Yorkshire and plays a fundamental role in Greene King’s charity work across the region. Bolton born and bred, Marks favourite beverage is an Abbott Ale beer and he enjoys nothing more than having a pint watching Rugby with friends. Greene King is very kindly sponsoring Weston Park
Hospital Cancer Charity’s ‘For One Night Only’ event which is inviting social clubs across South Yorkshire, Doncaster and North Derbyshire to host a special evening in support of Weston Park Hospital. Weston Park Hospital is one of only four dedicated cancer hospitals in England and treats an average of 60,000 patients each year. Mark, whose parents have both been affected by cancer, says Greene King’s support for the Cancer Charity is paramount to ensure the best possible care for cancer patients can continue. “Greene King is proud to be
supporting this fantastic local cancer charity and helping to improve research, treatment and care for those living with cancer in the area.” “If all social and Working Mens Clubs in the region held an event in support of the charity ‘For One Night Only’ it would make such a positive difference to services delivered through Weston Park Hospital.” For One Night Only is a new initiative being organised by the Cancer Charity in their 20th year which encourages clubs from far and wide to hold one special event of their choice to help raise vital funds.

Local family-run coach tour company Skills Holidays is flying the flag for the South Yorkshire and the East Midlands in the prestigious National Coach TourismAwards. Skills is one of eight finalists in the Coach Tour Operator Brochure of the Year category. Skills Holidays, which operates breaks and holidays by coach from Chesterfield, Mansfield and Sheffield will be flying the flag for the region this year as it hopes to be the winning team in this years awards. The annual National Coach Tourism Awards recognise excellence and innovation across coach tour operators, destinations, attractions, and tourism industry suppliers. “We’re proud to be representing the region and in these awards,” said Skills Holidays Chairman Nigel Skill. “Being a finalist is such a great recognition of all the work we’ve put in over the last couple of years on our brochure, and developing new and popular trips for passengers as well as creating an interesting brochure that engages customers.” The company, founded in 1919, pulled all its holidays together into one ‘super brochure’ last year, featuring a variety of holidays including city breaks and scenic trips, shopping and theatre trips, and luxury tours to essential holidays. Some of the more interesting tours include a Doctor Who weekend in Cardiff and relaxing 4 star Spa Breaks. Administrator of the Guild of British Coach Operators Richard Delahoy said: “We’d like to wish Skills Holidays the very best of luck with the awards. We represent the UK’s premier coach operators, and it’s great to see the quality of their newly-
formatted, customer friendly brochure being recognised in this way. Best wishes go to all our shortlisted members who are driving up the standards for coach holidays.” Nigel added: “Our new brochure has helped us further increase our passenger numbers by 17% so far this year, and our sales continue to go from strength to strength. I’d like to congratulate the Holidays Division team for all their hard work, and wish them luck for the awards night.”

WEATHER NOT KIND TO TOWN MOOR AS DELUGE LEADS TO SEA OF NON RUNNERS
with Clint Walker
I had a very interesting exchange last week in which I was asked to consider why it may be perceived that the big name angling companies choose to ignore carp angling any further north than the Watford Gap! In truth, it hadn’t really occurred to me that it could be the case, but after further consideration, I realised that I’d never seen a carp programme, DVD or video shot anywhere but one of the top Oxfordshire/Cambridgeshire/Essex type venues or abroad; why is that? The answer to me is glaringly obvious; carp ‘Oop North’ just do not grow to the sizes of their southern brethren in sufficient numbers, and in an arena where size is everything, big carp sell products. If ‘celebrity’ anglers fished places where a 20lb carp was a rarity rather than the norm, and thirties were unheard of, then would anglers rush out to buy the latest gadget or gizmo? Or does the sight of huge lump of carp immediately inspire potential customers to go and stock up their tackle box? I’d argue the second option much more feasible, after all, who would go out and spend hundreds of pounds if the carp shown in such video presentations weighed in at 5-10lbs? Not many I’d wager, but if the tackle and tactics shown guaranteed 30-50lb carp, then that’s different! Is that it though? Another point made was a lack of investment in carp fisheries further up the country; my argument was to consider places like Raker Lakes, Pendle View, and others where big fish are prevalent. Having said that, after debating, I was struggling to think of any top venues further north than Yorkshire; I rarely get any reports from Scotland where 20lbs is an immense fish, so is investment feasible to create a viable carp fishery in the frozen north? Again, it goes back to the issue of size; in cooler climes, the carp just don’t seem to grow to anywhere near as big as elsewhere, so to buy the fishery, heat the water, buy the required strain of fast growing carp and kit out the fishery to make it attractive to specimen anglers in addition to waiting for all this to establish into a viable eco system……it’s just not possible is it?? It appears to be sad but true….. On the catch front, I fished a lovely little Cheshire club water and followed up my last brace of twenties with another decent fish at 20lb 3ozs; not a monster, but then I’m not ‘….down South’ and 20lbs+ is still a respectable fish, so I was happy. I often read about the next ‘must have’ rig or bait tweak and wonder if I’m missing out, but a decent bait (in this case Marukyu Credence Corn, you HAVE to try this stuff!) in the right place, on a simple braid rig, and a fish resulted within twenty minutes! I did learn something again this week; I use a lot of liquid additives, my current favourite being another from my sponsor Marukyu’s stable, the Credence Marine Liquid. Straight from the bottle, it’s sticky stuff, and will adhere to almost anything, but if you make up a pva stick, then drizzle with Credence Marine, it becomes super sticky if left in the sunshine and forms a tacky crust which covers your baits! Think ice cream chocolate sauce which hardens, and you are on the right lines! Yum! Try it and see for yourself….but don’t eat it!

The forecast was for “heavy showers”, but it seemed as though the longer the day went on at Doncaster on Monday, the more rain fell and the darker it became. It didn’t affect the off times of any of the races but it did lead to a lot of trainers pulling their horses out as they declared on good ground and ended up running on heavy ground. The results weren’t too kind to punters either, as 50/1 Sakhalin Star proved later on in the card for trainer and former Grand National winning jockey Richard Guest and jockey Billy Cray getting up in the shadows of the post to win by a nose from Twin Appeal. Jockey Jamie Spencer has got a busy week at York and Newbury coming up, and started it well with a double on the card courtesy of Speculative Bid in the mile maiden for in-form trainer David Elsworth, before producing Lesha perfectly to score in the feature three year old handicap over the same trip for Kevin Ryan. Spencer was flying out to Chantilly on Tuesday together with Frankie Dettori to ride in a Listed race out there, but the Italian wasn’t successful, with his well fancied mount Push Me finishing a long way behind Martinas Delight who broke the maiden at the 14th time of asking for Danny Tudhope and trainer Alan Jarvis. Jockey Andrew Mullen had a winner at Chester last week, and also recorded a victory on Town Moor when Bajan Rebel scored for Mick Easterby. Best Of Order won the feature race of the day. However, for trainer David O’Meara and jockey David Nolan (who himself is having a very good start to the season) this horse was the subject of a sustained gamble throughout the day on his first run from France, starting off the day at around 16/1 and returning at an SP of 4/1. Muhaarar won nicely in the two year old maiden for Paul Hanagan and could be aimed at Pattern company now. We race again on Saturday night when we welcome the brilliant Status Quo to Doncaster to perform after racing, and with tickets selling fast, be sure to grab yours at www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk or call 01302 304200.

RODDY’S BACK #19 FOR THE STEELERS Steelers this week confirmed the signing of Rod Sarich. Sarich joined the Steelers in 2004 and played eight years in Sheffield before the arrival of Doug Christiansen last season. Christiansen didn’t offer Sarich the chance of a return for a ninth year something new head coach Gerad Adams jumped at the opportunity of doing “Rod Sarich is a quality player and one I am delighted to have on my team. I know what it’s like to be out of hockey for a short while and know how hungry you get to come back. “Roddy spent eight years in Sheffield. He knows what it takes to be a Steeler and win here. He is in great physical condition and the year out will not have had an effect on him at all. “I was a big fan of his when I coached against him. He has a great offensive upside and in the modern game this important. Our D core has improved today with him on it” Sarich played 400 EIHL games for the Steelers scoring an incredible 297 EIHL points. In 2012 Sarich also obtained British citizenship and played for GB in the Olympic qualification tournament in Latvia.
DOWD EXTENDS HIS STEELERS CONTRACT WITH NEW TWO YEAR DEAL
Robert Dowd has inked a new contract with the Sheffield Steelers extending his existing deal until the end of 2016 "Robert Dowd is a special talent and one we need to keep happy and motivated here" said head coach Gerad Adams "I fully understand the new import and duel national deals that are happening this year and next but they never effected the way that I and everyone else here at the club saw and valued Rob. Youngsters up and down the land should take a look at his drive and commitment. When I came here I was excited to work with him and he never let me down for a moment. "I think we all see him as the face of the Steelers and a leader in this club. On and off the ice he conducts himself well. We all saw how he motivated a whole fan base with his community work with Fir Vale Food Bank, well he does that every day with his work ethic in training as well" Dowd scored 30 times for the Steelers last season leading the team in goals. It was the start of his second spell with the club after first joining the Steelers in 2006-07. He became a full time member of the team in 2008-09 scoring 27 times and helping the Steelers collect the league and play off double as well as being voted the leagues best young player. Dowd was a league champion again in 2010 but left Sheffield to join the Belfast where in season 11/12 he scored 40 times and helped the Giants lift the league title. Always keen to improve Dowd then joined the Swedish Allsvenskan where he impressed with a double digit year and an impressive 24 points for Troja Lunby. Returning to Britain last season Dowd signed an initial two-year contract with the Steelers, a deal he has today extended by a further season "I came back to Sheffield to win" he said "We did that with a fantastic end to the season and the play off championship. Sheffield is my home and there is something special about being a part of the Steelers right now. I was happy to extended my contract. I think I share the views of everyone here, we all want to make this club the best it can be. I think we are heading in the right direction and our aim is to be competitive every night and compete for all trophies on offer. Like every player I love to win and I think we have a great chance of doing that again next season".
YOUNG OWL SIGNS WEDNESDAY CONTRACT Simon Hanna has signed his maiden professional contract with Sheffield Wednesday. The dynamic midfielder has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Hillsborough. Hanna skippered the Under-18 team last season and posted a string of dominant displays in the Owls’ engine room. He told swfc.co.uk: “I couldn’t be happier. To sign for a club the size of Sheffield Wednesday is a dream come true. “I have worked really hard to get to this stage of my career and will continue that hard work moving forward.” The 18-year-old has also impressed on the international stage with Northern Ireland, earning recognition at both Under-18 and Under-19 level. Hanna added: “I’m proud to represent my country and my aim in the long term is to earn a full cap. “For now, though, I want to keep listening, keep improving and work towards getting into the first team set-up with Wednesday.” Hanna joins Joe Wildsmith as a second year scholar to earn professional terms having graduated from the academy in 2013/14. Franck Betra and Jack Stobbs also successfully moved through the ranks, earning pro contracts ahead of schedule.

OWLS MAGPIES AND BARNSLEY FRIENDLIES ANNOUNCED
Sheffield Wednesday will host Premier League side Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly. The warm-up fixture against the Magpies will take place at Hillsborough on Wednesday 30 July, with kick off at 7.45pm. Newcastle concluded their season on Sunday with a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, finishing tenth in the top flight. Tickets will be priced at £15 and £5 and sale dates will be announced in due course via the official website and social media channels. The clash with the St James’ Park outfit will serve as the Owls’ only friendly on home soil ahead of the 2014/15 campaign. Wednesday last met with Newcastle in the 2009/10 Championship season at Hillsborough which finished 2-2 on Boxing Day. Sheffield Wednesday can also confirm a pre-season friendly with League One side Barnsley ahead of the 2014/15 campaign. The Owls will alface the Reds at Oakwell on Saturday 2 August, 1.00pm kick-off, one week before the start of the new season. After a tough campaign for Barnsley, the club’s relegation from the Championship was confirmed on the penultimate game of the season at Middlesbrough in April. The clash with Danny Wilson’s side is Wednesday’s second confirmed pre-season fixture this summer, having previously released details of the home friendly with Premier League side Newcastle. Ticket details will be announced in due course via the Owls’ official website and social media channels.
EVANS PLEASED MADE IN WITH FIRST LEG DONCASTER DISPLAY Rotherham United boss Steve Evans believes his side have a great opportunity to progress after a 1-1 draw in a pulsating clash with Preston North End. In a tense play-off semi-final the Millers rose to the occasion with a stirring display and deservedly took the lead when Alex Revell surged into the area before sliding a clinical finish past North End ‘keeper Declan Rudd. The Millers were pegged back in the second half after a wonder goal from Preston striker Joe Garner which meant it was honours even going into the second leg. After the game Evans was proud of his players and praised his side from front to back. “I thought that we defended from the front with Revell and Thomas and I also think that we attacked from the back,” he said. “We caused a good team some real problems. We sat back and looked at their team from a distance, every managers looks at the others and breaks them down, but it really is quite scary the players that Preston have got. “But we have such a desire to win football matches and if we take all of our chances then we win the game. It has taken the goal of the century to break us and if there is a better goal in the play-offs this year then I’ll wake up a chicken! “We go to New York level on Thursday and if there is a repeat of that then it is going to be another fantastic game, and we have the home advantage and the opportunity for our support to make the type of noise the Preston fans made today. Our supporters also turned up in big numbers and they will go home happy with a result that is acceptable, it is not a good result because normally associate a good result with winning, but it is an acceptable result.” When quizzed if it was advantage Millers for the second leg Evans admitted that he felt the tie was equally balanced. “I don’t think it is advantage to anyone,” Evans responded. “To come to Deepdale and play like that then it gives us a chance at New York but at the same time we know that Preston came earlier in the season played really well for 45 minutes, and at times dominated.”
MADE IN DONCASTER: Doncaster Rovers announce new player development pathway. Doncaster Rovers are delighted to announce a new training programme, Mighty Kicks, which will provide a clear pathway and opportunity for local children to join the Club’s academy, development and foundation programmes. The Mighty Kicks programme will be open to children aged 6-8 and will operate in partnership with Mini Kicks, the coaching organisation that specialises in providing high energy and fun training programmes for children aged between 2 and 6 years of age. Launching on Saturday 24th May, the first Mighty Kicks session will see 60 local children given the opportunity to automatically enrol into the programme, as they graduate from Mini Kicks. Paul Dickov, head coach at Doncaster Rovers said, “It’s important that clubs such as Doncaster Rovers keep a strong identity and part of that identity has to be having players that have come through the academy given opportunity to reach the first team. “Over the past few years 15 players have been given professional contracts by the club, three of which, James Husband, Alex Peterson and Liam Wakefield have featured for the first team this season.” Gavin Baldwin, Chief Executive of Doncaster Rovers said, “Not only will the Mighty Kicks programme provide the club with a unique opportunity of identifying talented children at an early age, it will also provide exit strategies towards our development and grass roots links, ensuring children have a pathway into a level of football that suits them. “In addition children who are part of the mini-kicks programme will automatically be invited to join our junior rovers scheme, helping to grow the next generation of supporters too.” To register visit www.minikicks.org and click register now, email youthrecruitment@ doncasterroversfc.co.uk or phone 07413 712487. TALKS UNDERWAY CELEBS PREPARE
Nigel Clough’s bid to bring in fresh faces for next season is already underway, he has revealed. The Blades chief says offers have been made and talks are continuing as he looks to make early inroads into assembling his squad for the 2014-15 campaign. “There’s a lot of talking to agents and players, if we can get to them,” said the Blades chief, who also confirmed that United’s retained list is expected this week. “We have our list of targets, our preferred choices, in terms of the players we want to bring in. “It is difficult because they take time but you don’t want to take too much time because you could miss out on other targets. We prefer to set a time limit and we’d like to get them done in the next couple of weeks, if possible. You have to get a feeling if you are going to get the deal done in a month or two, we’ll hang on if they are worth it, if not you move on and look elsewhere.” The Blades chief has already been linked with a number of names, whilst Ben Davies, who played 20 times and scored three goals during his loan spell from Derby County in the second half of the season is a confirmed target. “Ben will be offered something,” added Clough. “We know him, he has done well in the three months he has been here, he fills in, gets the odd goal - the three he scored all turned out to be winners. We’d like him around but he may have offers from elsewhere we’ll see what happens.”
RAWSON SPRING CLINCH S&HCFA CUP Meadowhall League Rawson Spring finished second in the Premier Division last week on goal difference, but they had a better week this time-out. They put in a fine performance at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night to clinch the S&HCFA Senior Cup with a 4-2 win over Joker FC. The all important goals came in the form of braces from Andrew Gascigne and Alex Torr. Division One Jack-in-a-Box ended their season with a fine 4-0 home win over City Taxis at Davy Sports Club on Sunday. Jack-in-a-Box end the season in third position. Division Two SWD knew only win against Ridgeway Athletic would be enough to give them the Division Two title. They held their nerve, with two goals from Wesley Hewitt setting them up for a 3-1 win.
TO TAKE ON BLADES
Here are just a few familiar TV faces ready to take on a team of Blades legends later this month.
From left, Daniel Jillings (Coronations Street/ Doctors), Danny Miller (Emmerdale), Ceallech Spellman (Waterloo Road) and Dean Smith (Waterloo Road/Great Train Robbery), were at Bramall Lane to watch United’s final game of the season against Coventry. And on Sunday 18th May (1pm kick-off) they will be on the pitch again as part of a Celebrity All Stars XI that take on Chris Morgan and co. as the Blades put together a legends team... all in the name of the charity. The celebrity team will have other stars from Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and members of boyband 911 taking part, whilst 2012 World Cup Final referee Howard Webb will take charge. All proceeds from the game are going to the Once Upon A Smile Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK. United’s team will include David Holdsworth, Rob Hulse, Georges Santos, Craig Short, Dave Kitson and Curtis Woodhouse, whilst it has been announced recently that James Beattie and Stuart McCall have been added to the squad. Tickets are priced at £6 for adults and £1 for under 16s, and are available now online at www.sufc. talent-sport.co.uk by phone on 0871 995 1889 or from the Sheffield United ticket office Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm. There are also a limited number of exclusive after match VIP meet and greet tickets available, which will give ticket holders the chance to meet the celebrity and football players of both sides in person after the game.
