Copley’s Column

Hot on the heels of the visit of Joe Elliott, frontman for the top rock band Def Leppard last week, we have been visited this week by yet another mega star, Phil Oakey, from top band the Human League who came to visit ex band member Russ Dennett, who is very busy at the moment putting the finishing touches to his new venture, J.D’S , which is a music lounge , shortly to open on the High Street in Dronfield. This exciting new venue is set to open in the first week of June and will surely attract trade from out of town and consequently benefit other businesses, particularly public houses in Dronfield. Russ is quite rightly excited about this new chapter in his life and I wish him well. Talking of surprise visitors, Russ Dennett’s open mic nights at the Yew Tree often produces one and this week we had two, Stephen France, a great lad who Russ and I go back thirty years with As he used to attend my pub with the wonderful entertainer, Nudge Needham and was with the Alcudia entertainers from Sheffield crowd, which included as well as Nudge, Stephen, Russ, Emma Rossi and the unforgettable Pete Haywood, better known as Potty Pete, whose band were known as the Pikelets. Potty was one of life’s nice guys , a privilege to have as a mate, who lightened up the lives of all those with whom he came into contact, and Russ Dennett does a lot to keep his memory alive including a facebook page entitled ‘ Remembering Potty Pete’. Also, we had the pleasure of a couple of songs from a great act, Tony Lewis, who I have had the pleasure of seeing many times before, when he appeared regularly at a pub in Greenhill. At the risk of being accused of making this the ‘Russ Dennett’ column, I have to mention Thursday night at the Victoria where Russ appeared with Andy Birks, a fine singer as well as being a good butcher. The evening was fantastic, with every song receiving rapturous

applause. A bonus for us, the audience, was the appearance on backing vocals of Andy’s brother Mick and father Tony. Andy is lead singer with a great band Riff Raff, who played the Yew Tree, Coal Aston on Saturday night. Unfortunately, Caron and I were unable to be there. The top act on this week’s Britain’s Got Talent was local artiste Ricky K, who I have always admired, and he acquitted himself very well, wowing all four judges and gaining four ‘yes’ votes to the next round. I am sure you will enjoin me in wishing him well in the competition. My good pal, Paul Shane is very much in my thoughts this week, the anniversary of his passing.

THURSDAY’S THE DAY Sheffield electors are being reminded that Thursday is the day to go and vote by Sheffield City Council’s Elections team. Sheffield, like many other local authorities across England, is holding local elections on Thursday (22 May) and electors will also be having their say in the European elections for Yorkshire and Humberside. “By now, everyone in Sheffield who’s on the electoral roll should have received a polling card, showing which polling station they need to go to in order to vote,” said John Mothersole, Returning Officer for the local elections in Sheffield. “All polling stations are open from 7am in the morning until 10pm, so you have all day to go and vote. You don’t need to take your polling card with

you to vote, so don’t worry if you don’t have it with you when you call in, although sometimes it can be helpful to have it with you. “If you have a postal vote and you haven’t already posted it, you can hand it in to any polling station up to 10pm on Thursday. If you do have a postal vote, then please take responsibility for it. You need to complete it personally and follow all the instructions. There is a voluntary code of conduct for handling postal votes, which candidates and agents have signed up to.” If you still have any queries about voting call Sheffield City Council’s elections helpline on 0114 273 4093 or visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/elections. The local results will also be shown on the web site after they have been announced on Friday and the European election results will be announced in Leeds on Sunday (25 May).

BIGGEST CARE REFORMS IN 60 YEARS The Care Act represents the most significant reform of care and support in more than 60 years, putting people and their carers in control of their care and support. For the first time, the Act will put a limit on the amount anyone will have to pay towards the costs of their care. Care and support is something that nearly everyone in this country will experience at some point in their lives. It is important for us to have a modern system that can keep up with the demands of a growing ageing population. The Care Act has created a single, modern law that makes it clear what kind of care people should expect. To help make things clearer we have introduced a minimum eligibility threshold across the country. This isn’t just about making things easier to understand – it’s also about changing the way we care for people. Central to the Act is the concept of wellbeing. First and foremost councils will now have a duty to consider the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of the individual needing care. They will also have a new duty to pFor the first time the system will be

STARS SIGN UP FOR DEMENTIA

Alzheimer’s Society and Public Health England (PHE) have launched a star studded campaign to encourage people to become Dementia Friends. Stars from music, sport and screen including Lilly Allen, Sir Terry Pratchett and Hugh Dennis join a person with dementia to breakdown the stigma of a condition that affects 670,000 people in England in a new primetime television advert. Singing one of The Beatles greatest hits ‘with a little help from my friends’, some of the UK’s best loved entertainers including Chris Martin, Ruth Jones, Fiona Phillips, Simon Pegg and Meera Syal urge the public to sign up as Dementia Friends.

built around each person – what they need, how they can best be cared for, and what they want. By providing and legislating for Personal Budgets in the Care Act we are giving people the power to spend money on tailored care that suits their individual needs as part of their support plan. We know that one of the biggest concerns people have is how they’ll pay for their care. Until now people have unfairly faced losing almost everything they’ve worked hard for in order to get the care they need. Following recommendations we are bringing in new measures to give people greater peace of mind that they’ll get the support they need without the worry of facing unlimited costs. We have put forward a new system which will cap the amount people have to spend on the care they need, regardless of how much they have in savings or assets. We have increased the means testing level so that government help kicks in far earlier than before, meaning people with modest wealth will be eligible for state help towards that cap. And every council will have to offer a deferred payment scheme, meaning no one should be forced Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends initiative aims to make everyday life better for people with the condition and is this country’s biggest ever project to change the way the nation thinks, talks and acts when it comes to the condition. From today, people can watch a new online video to help understand a bit more about what it’s like to have dementia and the small things we can all do to make a difference to people living with the condition. This complements the existing face-to-face Dementia Friends information sessions run by Alzheimer’s Society.

to sell their home during their lifetime in order to pay for their residential care. These changes will give people more choice and control over how they’ll pay for it. A fully open and transparent system like this will leave bad care with nowhere to hide. We’re also getting tougher on those who deliver bad care. We’re bringing in stronger regulatory powers, including prosecution where necessary. We’re giving carers new rights to support that put them on the same footing as the people they care for. All too often we see people falling through the cracks between the NHS and care and support provided in the community – different parts of the system don’t talk to each other or share appropriate information, so people don’t get the support they need. That’s why we have made a commitment to make joined-up health and care the norm by 2018. Over 4 years we have worked collaboratively to develop the most comprehensive overhaul of social care since 1948 and together we now need to focus on making these reforms a reality. WE ARE FAMILY... TRAMLINES ADDS 30 NEW ACTS TO 2014 LINEUP Tramlines is thrilled to welcome the iconic Sister Sledge to its Main Stage on Devonshire Green for a headline set of disco, soul and rhythm and blues on Saturday night. Amongst other new additions is a début performance from the renowned house/techno DJ and producer Tiga, who brings his hypnotic electronica to the o2 Academy on Friday 25 July, spinning recent collaborations with Audion such as Fever, and selections from his ZZT outfit with Zombie Nation. Taking to the stage at The Leadmill on Sunday 27 July are British psych-rock outfit TOY, who are currently entertaining crowds on tour with The Horrors, performing tracks from their critically acclaimed second album Join The Dots. Tramlines is well-known for showcasing great breaking bands and 2014 is no different, as it welcomes London four-piece Women’s Hour who will bring their soulful alt-rock to a Sunday slot at the Cathedral. Another oneto-watch act to be added is indie-

electropop trio We Are Evergreen. Having supported Slow Club (who’ve already been announced to play at Tramlines) their shapeshifting folk melodies, electro beats and exotic rhythms will be on show at the Cathedral on Saturday 26 July. More new talent appears elsewhere on the festival site, this time from the world of drum and bass, in the form of the DJ / producer DLR. Signed to Goldie’s label Metalheadz, DLR will play at The Night Kitchen on Saturday 26 July as part of a Metalheadz label takeover, alongside fellow label signing, Lenzman and more. Sheffield is renowned for being at the forefront of underground music, so it’s no surprise to see a huge amount of local talent appearing in this next round of lineup announcements. DJ and producer Chris Duckenfield returns to Tramlines after his set at Toddla T Brings You Sheffield vs Detroit last year. Also added is The DJ Pipes, the creator of Sheffield’s legendary night, Kabal. Meanwhile, one of 2014’s most promising artists and BBC6Music

playlist regular Mike Hughes, will return to the Cathedral for a fullband set. Advance weekend tickets are on sale now from www.gigantic.com at £28 (plus 10% booking fee). Weekend tickets are available in advance only. Tickets will be available for sale on the door for £16 per day, or £48 for all three days. A number of tickets are also now on sale from Sheffield University. This year will see hundreds of acts take to the stages at various venues across Sheffield including the o2 Academy, The Leadmill, The Night Kitchen, the Cathedral, Fez Club, Foundry, Fusion, and The Octagon Centre, The Harley, Hope Works, Millennium Galleries, Queens Social Club and Yellow Arch Studios. The main stage sits on Devonshire Green, whilst public areas like Barker’s Pool will be filled yet again with street theatre, dancers and workshops. The festival will also see the welcome return of free-entry, family-friendly areas including the Peace Gardens, Folk Forest and the Weston Park party

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This weekend we collected outdoors in the glorious sunshine, Our site was the Tanyard Shopping Centre in Wickersley and it was a busy day for shoppers. Altogether we collected £127.11 which will go towards the cost of keeping the station on the air. Thank you to our volunteers who made the effort this weekend and most of all thank you to the shoppers who dug deep and gave their loose change to a small local charity that relies on such generosity. We’ve got more collections already booked and would like to add some extra dates at other venues around Rotherham. To do this we need people to help out with the collections, would you be able to spare a couple of hours to help occasionally? There’s no obligation to commit to every collection or other work around the station, although we do have vacancies in the team at the moment if you’re interested. ROCKIN’ ALL OVER THE SUMMER MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder

Well after last weekend of wonderful weather, we await what’s thrown at us for the coming Bank Holiday weekend. I am of the mind that there is no better place on earth than Yorkshire, when it’s warm and dry anyway. This last Saturday and Sunday was beautiful, the wife and I took our son to Cannon Hall for a wander round and an ice cream, then on Saturday night it was best bib and braces with a trip to Doncaster Race Course where a rather well known rock band were playing. Now when you mention Status Quo to someone they instantly know who they are, I mean they have been around forever haven’t they? I was honoured with the task of bringing them on stage. The crowd were enjoying a beautiful evening across South Yorks and they were ‘up for it’ . I’d grown up listening to Quo and did wonder what they were going to be like. I had interviewed Francis Rossi on Magic AM a few days before hand and thought this could be fun. Let me tell you I wasn’t dissappointed, in fact I smiled and sang the whole way through the gig. These guys are not only in their mid 60’s but they have still ‘got it’. If you went along, I really do hope you enjoyed as much as i did. PS. my ears are still ringing! On Magic AM this week Julio Iglesias, is the best-selling Latin Artist in History and to celebrate the release of his new album - ‘1 The Collection’ out this week consisting of Julio’s passionate love ballads - with some songs re-mastered. Begin the Beguine; Crazy and When I Need You plus a duet with Frank Sinatra on Summer Wind. You can win copies all week on Magic AM Hoping you can join me for breakfast weekday mornings on Magic AM from 6 - 10am and across the day. Listen on 990, 1305, 1548 AM, Digital Radio and online at magicam.co.uk for just great songs.

CELEBRATING SIX YEARS OF CLUB HISTORIANS! CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Crack open the fizz or at least a bottle of stout, dear readers! I’m very pleased to say that Club Historians has now reached another year in its own history and continues to attract increasing attention and popularity. It’s looked at by people all over the world and is usually the first port of call for those wanting to find out something about working men’s clubs. Yet it all began as a tentative venture six years ago between myself and a great webmaster, Geoff B. We had lots of ideas and enthusiasm and between us quite a few skills. But there was no money to set up this website so we decided to go ahead as amateurs on a small-scale. Six years later, the site has grown as well as the information contained on it. But we’re still doing it on an amateur basis: Club Historians remains something we do in our spare time (which there isn’t much of!) and on a not-for-profit basis. The information provided about different clubs, the CIU, stories from club members past and present, entertainment, politics and key issues, is shared for free. Some of the content is what I’ve discovered myself while looking at the club movement over the past ten years. Other material is sent in by the public, which could be their own personal stories and anecdotes. There is even an obituary column where you’ll find stories of clubs that have been lost. The column would be much longer if I included all those clubs that have closed in the past six years. I don’t have the resources or time to do that but the ones here are indicative of the others. The same with other sections of the site: it is not comprehensive but representative of club stories up and down the country. We often get mistaken for the CIU and I receive enquiries about rules, practices and even some about how to save a club from incompetent, even corrupt committees. I can only email the enquirer and suggest they go to the CIU, at local or national level. Club Historians supports the CIU and vice versa but we are not part of it. At the end of the day, it’s a unique, independent site, trying to document stories before they are lost for good and to make these available and accessible to anyone interested.

By Kt Evans

Real Friends Interview

By Kt Evans

Sheffield’s Tramlines festival is fast becoming one of the country’s most successful inner-city live music events, set for its return from 25 – 27th July. Held across more than 100 venues throughout the city centre along with a main stage situated on Devonshire Green, the event sees crowds from far and wide to celebrate some of the nation’s finest bands, acts and performers. With 2014 harbouring its strongest line-up yet, we are in full expectation of the best weekend of the year in our steel city. So, to the line-up. The beauty of tramlines festival is its massive appeal for music lovers of varied genres. Whether it be electro, indie, dance or rock, this year’s event caters to the masses for each and everybody to appreciate. Headlining the weekend and no strangers to the Yorkshire crowd, The Cribs. These proud Wakefield brothers pioneer northern indie, with their raw sounding, high energy live hits. Former Smith’s member Jonny Marr famously joined the band back in 2008 until 2011, ensuring the group were named by NME as ‘the biggest cult band in the UK.’ With hits ‘Men’s Needs,’ ‘We Share The Same Skies’ and ‘Cheat On Me’ all massive live hits off the bands enormous back catalogue, expect beautiful things from the Northern brotherhood. Also headlining the event, Katy B. Kick starting her musical career back in 2009, the dubstep, garage, drum n bass and r’n’b performer has had international chart success with her two studio albums – ‘On A Mission’ in 2011 and ‘Little Red’ released in February of this year. Arguably one of the first female artists to introduce a commercial sounding dubstep movement into the charts, Katy B’s live show is a culmination of colossal baselines, spectacular production and one hell of an outfit, one not to be missed. For those who like their music with a little more punch, Funeral For a Friend would be your first port of call. Having headlined festival across the world, the Welsh hardcore clan have released six studio albums and are regarded as one of the genres most influential groups. Also included on the Tramlines 2014 line-up is in-house favourite Ms Dynamite alongside Radio 1 DJ’s Annie Mac and Toddla T. Laying the nest in Sheffield, Toddla T has worked with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Roots Manuva and Tinchy Stryder whilst travelling around the world as an international producer, composer and remixer.

Slam Dunk festival 2014, the annual alternative indoor music festival is this year being held on 24th May at Leeds University. One of the finest displays of alternative, pop punk, hardcore an acoustic, the event draws in crowds from across the country in full celebration of their favourite genre. Prior to their performance on the Atticus Stage, we caught up with Chicago based pop-punk five piece Real Friends, who are set to release their LP ‘Maybe This Place Is the Same And We’re Just Changing’ in July. “Our fans have been there with us since the beginning; it’s always been about them. The kids’ opinion matters the most to all of us.” There are two major aspects of Real Friends which make them so dissimilar to the colossal amount of bands which flutter through the international music scene… firstly having a genuine love for what they do whilst secondly being a group in full dedication of their fan base. Although lyrically, the group seem to be opening up a personal diary of thoughts and emotions, the connection they make with their audiences across the world ensure the five piece will forever strive to be at the top of their game. Dan explains: “It doesn’t matter what we think of the band, it matters what you think of the band. It’s all interpretative but at the end of the day it’s all worth it.” Since releasing their first EP, “This Is Honesty” back in 2011, Real Friends have gone on to tour the world with their interpretative take on what we so commonly refer to as ‘pop punk.’ But what makes them so striking popular is their lyrics, their genuine love for what they do but moreover, their honesty. “We’ve just released our new single ‘Loose Ends’ (from the upcoming album ‘Maybe This Place Is The Same And We’re Just Changing’) and if fans don’t like it, I would say have another swing at it when we release the album or we release another single,” explains Kyle. “If they listen to the whole album and they don’t like it, at least they listened to the whole album so we would say thanks for trying.” So to the new record…with a release date of 22nd July, the album marks a brand new chapter for Real Friends who recently signed to the mighty Fearless Records. A versatile mixture of post emo verses modern pop punk, the album digs deep into the very core of the US brotherhood. Track “I Don’t Love You Anymore” is as heart wrenching as its title suggest, whilst “Sixteen” is vast in its honest simplicity.

Visit www.tramlines.org.uk for the full line up. Tickets are priced at £28 for a full weekend wristband.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Weekly Feature

BELOVED GRANDMOTHER SUPPORTS CANCER CHARITY AFTER 16 YEAR CANCER STRUGGLE A beloved mother and grandmother from Creswell in Derbyshire is supporting her local cancer hospital after battling the disease for 16 years. As part of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s latest tea party fundraiser, Time for Tea, Gloria Harrison (76) is hosting a garden party on Saturday 31st May, as a thank you to the hospital that is providing her with treatment for breast cancer. In 1998, around the time Gloria was celebrating her 60th birthday, she came across a lump in her breast and visited her GP straight away. Unexpectedly, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery at Calow Hospital the following month. Gloria then underwent

a 6-week course of radiotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield and continued to live her life as a busy motherof-three in the hope of leaving her cancer ordeal behind her. However, in 2009, Gloria was forced to face the reality that the cancer had returned and this time she was advised to undertake a lifelong treatment programme, devised by Weston Park Hospital consultant, Dr Omar Din. As part of the hospital’s outreach programme and to ensure that the patient experience is the best it can be, Weston Park Hospital consultants work at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, and other surrounding hospitals, on a daily basis to provide the

very best care and treatment plans locally. Weston Park Hospital treats over 60,000 people a year, and around 17% of its patients are from the North Derbyshire and Chesterfield area. Gloria, who lives with her husband of 56 years, Ken, and has 7 grandchildren, started fundraising for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity just one year after her initial diagnosis. She said: “Receiving not one, but two diagnoses of cancer has been devastating, but I have tried to remain positive and keep going for my family’s sake. “I now visit Chesterfield Royal Hospital every 6 months to see Dr Din and ensure that my treatment is going according to plan. “Being able to visit

a specialist so close to home has made such a huge difference and I just want to raise as much money as possible so that the incredible work of Weston Park Hospital can continue.” Weston Park Hospital is one of only four specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It is hoped that Time for Tea will raise over £20,000 and that communities from far and wide will come together in support of pioneering cancer research and the treatment and care of cancer patients in this region.

FISHING • TO LET BULL-DOG

with Clint Walker

I’m lucky enough to consider myself as working slightly within ‘trade’ circles (albeit on a part time basis!) and as such, occasionally I get an insight into things that other anglers may not; it’s not always positive as I found out this week..... I visit a lot of tackle shops on my travels, some good and some bad, and this week has seen me visit a fair mix, and it got me thinking...what is the difference? There are a lot of things to consider; shop size, staff numbers, accounts held and much more, but above all, the one thing I believe makes a real difference is customer service... For a tackle shop owner, I think it’s fair to suggest things are not particularly encouraging at the moment; overheads for utilities and staff continue to rise, product prices are going up (ingredient and component costs are on the up) and customer spend is going down. The advent of internet sales is killing the high street trade, some customers are guilty of ‘tyre kicking’ in the shop, then buying online to undercut the price at the expense of the retailer and why not? We all need to save money, but when the retailer on the street shuts his doors for the final time, we’ll all complain, and some of us will be to blame... Having said all that, how can the retailer encourage customers to spend in their shop? In my opinion, if I walk into a shop and I’m ignored, or just grunted at, then I’m already thinking of going elsewhere. If I’m acknowledged, asked if I need assistance and engaged by shop staff, then I’m far more likely to spend my money with them. Most of us could spend hours in a tackle shop and not spend a bean; just being with like minded anglers is often enough of a substitute and if the customer feels comfortable then eventually, they will start to spend money! One criticism I have heard is that staff attend to ‘regulars’ rather than someone who rarely visits; perhaps there is a reason that angler isn’t a regular? If you are treated as a second class customer, isn’t it only natural that you will feel like one and be loathe to visit? On the flip side, some shops go out of their way to keep customers happy. Free tea and coffee, quality banter, a great product range, competitive prices and good advice go an awfully long way to starting a relationship with the buyer; I travel past two shops to get to my favourite and I bet I’m not alone. I know that I’ll be looked after, every visit will be full of giggles too, and if I’m in a rush, I’ll get sorted quickly and be on my way. I don’t ask for discount, but occasionally it’s offered (and appreciated) and if they haven’t got my required item in stock, they will get it quickly and it will be correct. Social media is another way shops are starting to share with the customer; see a sale or discount on Facebook promising great deals and it gets your attention, sharing customer catch reports, offering competitions or other incentives are all great ways to interact with potential customers too.. I can’t put my finger on the ‘magic spark’ that makes me go there instead of anywhere else, if I could, I’d sell it, but I would think that seeing staff as friends rather than a challenge goes a long way to explaining it...would that be why you use yours?

Jason Hewitt will return to the Sheffield Steelers for a 10th season next year the club have confirmed today. Hewitt has also been awarded a testimonial for his decade long service to the club, however with fellow Steeler Mark Thomas having a testimonial year in season 14-15 Hewitt's will take place the following season. Head coach Gerad Adams was delighted to welcome Hewitt back for another season "I can only speak on what I saw once I arrived here and Hewey was great for me and great for the team in the run in. He did everything I asked and more. I used him in all situations and I trusted him on the ice at key moments. As good as he was on the ice he was in the room. He is one of the key figures within this hockey club. "When I advised the club that I wanted Hewey back they confirmed they would award him the testimonial year in 2015-16. He has been an amazing servant of this club and has been here for many league titles and play off championships. He knows what it takes to win and cross the line. He has fought for his place with the Steelers, nothing has been given to him. Youngsters should look at what his work ethic is and look up to him" Hewitt arrived in Sheffield in 2005 and has now the most appearances for the club in the Elite League era. He was part of the Steelers EIHL titles in 2009 and 2011 as well as three EIHL Play Off Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2014. "I felt I got my game right back on track at the end of last season" said Hewitt "Our line played really well and we contributed. Winning is what it is all about. It's why I came here 10 years ago. It's why I stay now because nothing beats that feeling of winning at the end of the year with 16 team mates that you have been to war with for 8 months "Sheffield isn't just my home now. It's my club. I'd like to think that the likes of Mark Thomas, Jonathan Phillips and I have shown that you can have great careers here and in return the club has given me some incredible moments back. When I arrived here I couldn't have dreamed of the journey we would all have been on and the very thought of 10 years and a testimonial I would have laughed at. That's over 12 months away but something to look forward to after another tough year ahead. "I think after the way last season ended with winning the championship we are all keen to get back as soon as possible and try and do it all over again. I think in Gerad we have a coach who knows our league but more importantly knows us and what it takes to do well here. He is a Steelers man like us, we respect him and can't wait for a full season under his control"

Steve Evans' men came out on top following an enthralling Roses battle to book a Wembley date with Leyton Orient with the chance to ply their trade in England's second tier at stake. Speaking exclusively to www.themillers.co.uk, Skarz revealed the passionate NYS crowd inspired his side to victory, especially after the Lancashire side took the initiative by grabbing an early goal. "The fans were brilliant even when we went one-nil down and they spurred the lads on," he enthused. "There's no better fans in the country than ours when the ground is full as the stadium creates such a fantastic atmosphere." Despite Paul Gallagher's fortuitous opening goal, the visitors' joy proved short-lived as Bournemouth loanee Wes Thomas levelled matters with a clever header before the tie was turned on its head when midfield maestro Lee Frecklington put the home side in charge with another well-placed header. Following the restart, Rotherham gave themselves a two-goal cushion thanks to Kieran Agard's 26th goal of the season and despite a few late scares, the Millers' held on as the NYS witnessed scenes of unbridled joy, reminiscent of the memorable League Two promotion clincher against Aldershot last campaign. With emotions still high well after the final whistle, Skarz admitted the game will live long in the memory and rank amongst his career highlights to date. "It was certainly an evening to remember," Skarz added. "We didn't start too well and when they scored, I thought it was going to be a long evening but the lads showed tremendous character and we showed our spirit and togetherness. "I thought we played well all night and Prings (Ben Pringle) and Tavs (James Tavernier) put some great deliveries into the box while Kieran (Agard) was outstanding and Revs (Alex Revell) and Wes (Thomas) were almost unplayable at times. "I can’t really sum it all up but we still have a massive job to do. "The gaffer, backroom staff and chairman deserve enormous credit for what we've done at this club but we can't celebrate anything as we've still got one game to go." Russell Slade's high-flying Leyton Orient stand in the way of the Millers' realising their Championship dream. With honours even with the Londoners during the regular season as each side notched victories on their home patch, the ex-Bury and Huddersfield defender admits the Wembley showpiece will be a close one to call. "Leyton Orient are a fantastic team and they are not in the final for nothing." he warned. "They outplayed Peterborough and we know their frontmen are a threat as they have scored a lot of goals but there will be two good teams out there. "We know we're going to have an even bigger battle against Orient and the prize is the Championship, which all the lads here desperately want." After putting pen to paper on a permanent deal with the Millers last summer following a successful loan stint, Skarz has been a key component in the Millers meteoric rise up the football pyramid with his consistent displays at full-back adding defensive steel to the Rotherham backline and solving one of his manager's conundrums last season. With his fairytale Millers career all set to continue on the hallowed turf of Wembley, Skarz revealed he hasn't been surprised by the rapid progress of his side on and off the pitch, as he felt the club was always a Championship club in the making as he made the switch over the Pennines. Despite the dream only being 90 minutes away, Skarz is quick to fire a cautionary note to fans and players alike. "I said when I came here, this was a club destined for big things and since I have been here, it has been success after success," he remarked. "I can't really believe I'll be playing at Wembley. When you grow up, that's what you want to achieve and I bet my phone is buzzing with text after text already asking for tickets. "We know we've just got one final hurdle to go and we know we will only enjoy the day if we are victorious. "We've not won anything yet and the lads will have to go again if we are to go where we all want to be."

Wednesday’s pre-season schedule is now as follows: Saturday 12 July: York v Owls (3.00pm) Friday 18 July: Bury v Owls (7.45pm) Sunday 27 July: Doncaster v Owls (2.00pm) Wednesday 30 July: Owls v Newcastle (7.45pm) Saturday 2 August: Barnsley v Owls (1.00pm)

OWLS TAKE OVER HILLSBOROUGH PARK FOR ANOTHER YEAR! One of the city’s biggest outdoor events, Owls in the Park, is confirmed as taking place this year on Sunday 13 July. The huge family fun day, hosted by Sheffield Wednesday and sponsored by the Brooklyn Steakhouse, is now its third year and expected to once more draw thousands of people to this unique event. Held at Hillsborough Park, Owls in the Park again promises to be a spectacular day for the whole family. This year, visitors can expect to experience a host of activities to suit everyone. Along with appearances from Wednesday players, other activities include live music, a funfair, catering and fun games at various stalls around the park. The Owls’ mascots, Ozzie and Barney, will also make a special appearance! Supporters will have the opportunity to get the autographs of their heroes and pose for photos – together with buying Season Tickets and official Memberships, which will be on sale on the day. The Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, the club’s charitable arm, will host various taster sessions and activities which will include a World Cup themed football tournament, inflatable pitches and a range of community stalls. Coaches from the programme will also deliver free of charge sessions in futsal, tennis, basketball and volleyball. Local children’s hospice, Bluebell Wood - the Community Programme’s official charity partner will be holding an official bucket collection in a bid to raise much-needed funds for the organisation. In addition, Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, Royal Society for the Blind and Support Dogs will join the day with special activities and entertainment throughout what promises to be a fun-filled afternoon! Marcus Brameld, Community Manager at Sheffield Wednesday, said: “Owls in the Park is a fantastic event for all the family and always promises to be a fun day for everyone involved. It’s the perfect way for the club to meet the fans and give something back for their ongoing support throughout the year. “It’s brilliant for Sheffield Wednesday to collaborate with local charities, organisations and local performers. We are all excited about the 2014 event and as ever, wish to welcome as many people to the park as possible.” Owls in the Park 2014 is free to attend and takes place on Sunday 13 July, starting at 11.00am and finishing at 5:30pm.

Nigel Clough has expressed his delight after concluding his first two pieces of incoming transfer business this summer. It was announced on Monday that Marc McNulty had completed his switch from Livingston on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, whilst Jamal Campbell-Ryce will become a Blade at the beginning of July when his Notts County contract officially ends. Speaking about his two new recruits, the Gaffer says the reasoning behind the signings are very different, but he believes both players will be valuable additions to the squad moving forward. Clough remarked: “Jamal brings us experience of this level and the one above and he has always performed well against us in recent seasons. “He is a player that can change a game and in doing so excites the crowd. He is a potential matchwinner on his day. “Marc is a player at the other end of the spectrum. He has consistently scored goals during the last two or three seasons at Livingston and it is well documented that he was someone we wanted to sign at Derby County. “He has kept plugging away, scoring 19 last season, and he is an exciting addition to the squad. He will be part of a strong strike force next season and hopefully he will get amongst the goals when he gets an opportunity.”

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ROVERS YOUNG DEFENDER

35

Doncaster Rovers wish to congratulate defender Luke McCullough on his full international call up. The Northern Irish defender, who signed for Rovers from Manchester United a year ago, has made the transition from the under-21s to Michael O’Neill’s senior 22 man squad. McCullough featured fifteen times in all competitions last season for Paul Dickov’s side and will now face an altogether new challenge when he represents his country in World Cup warm-up friendlies against Uruguay and Chile. The 20 year old follows former Rovers midfielders Sammy Clingan and Dean Shiels in to the full set up against the South American sides. Uruguay, who face England, Costa Rica and Italy in the World Cup group D, are first up for O’Neill’s men in Montevideo on Friday 30th May. The travelling party then move to Valparaiso on Chile’s coast on 4th June to take on the Chileans ahead of their Group B fixtures against Spain, Netherlands and Australia.
