Copley’s Column
Men are frequently accused by the fairer sex, not me by the way, of being totally lacking in passion. Anybody watching the fans of Rotherham United, at Wembley to support their team in the first division play-off final against Leyton Orient would be hard pressed to say that there was no passion there. The loyal fans were treated to a very exciting game with Rotherham fighting back after being two goals behind in the first half to level the game at two all after ninety minutes. With no further goals being scored in the half hour of extra time the match was decided on a nail biting penalty shoot-out. Rotherham were the first team to have a penalty saved but eventually finished up winning, thanks to two great saves by their goal-keeper. As much as I celebrated for the Rotherham fans, I could not help but to feel sorry for the Leyton Orient fans. This epitomises the sheer joy and conversely heartache present in the same stadium. I was particularly pleased for my close pal Jimmy Elliott who with his brother Brian are the Patton Brothers and younger brothers Barry and Paul who are the Chuckle Brothers who are devoted life-long Rotherham fans and all went to the game together. Barry and Paul are life presidents of the club. Russ Dennett’s open mic night at the Yew Tree on Sunday was a bit special as it coincided with the sixty seventh birthday of ex Johnny Calendar band mate and patriarch of the talented Birks family, Tony Birks (pictured). Tony’s brother Steve is well known as Vincent and Neirly Diamond, and is a brilliant performer and songwriter, and sons Michael and Andy, who celebrated with dad on the night are both very good singers. Andy regularly appears in a duo with Russ Dennett as well as being lead singer with top local band RiffRaff. Whilst Michael has a tremendous voice, occasionally guesting wit the wonderful Acoustic Angels. Saturday night at the Yew Tree saw the final performance under its’ present line-up of the Canyon. The Canyon have always been led by a great female vocalist and Tina, who took over from Anne Fotheringham, who left to pursue a successful solo career, is also branching out and Saturday was her last night. She turned in a sterling performance on her finale, and gently introduced her replacement, a
delightful lass by the name of Nicola, who impressed me with her vibrant personality as well as being extremely vocally proficient. It was a superb night with Tony Birks being presented with a fabulous birthday cake and Tina’s fellow bandmates generously giving her the total band fee as a token of their appreciation of her time singing with them. I send Nicola m very best wishes in the future with the Canyon, who are a grand set of lads. Sadly, I am devastated to report the passing of Jimmy Stocks, one of my oldest friends and best man at my first marriage. Jimmy was one of life’s wonderful characters, a fearless gambler in his day but more a wonderful husband, father and friend. My sincere condolences go out to his widow Pam, and his three bys, now men, Nicholas, Johnathan and Craig. God Bless and God speed Jimmy and thanks for being my close friend for nearly fifty years.

‘DERBY DAY OF THE Weekly Wit With... NORTH’ SET TO ALBERT THRILL RACING FANS SNODGRASS HORSE RACING fans in South Yorkshire will get to experience the thrill of one of the world’s most prestigious race meetings when Doncaster Racecourse’s Derby Day Raceday gets underway next week. The Town Moor’s Derby Day fixture on Saturday, June 07 will coincide with, and pay homage to, the Epsom classic which historically attracts some of the very best runners and riders in the sport. As well as live racing action from a packed seven race card and an exciting schedule of off the track entertainment, all of the Derby Day action from Epsom will be shown live on the big screen during the Ladbrokes sponsored event. Mark Spincer, managing director of Doncaster Racecourse, said that he hopes the raceday will be seen by the Doncaster and wider South Yorkshire public as the ‘Derby for the North’. He commented: “The Derby at Epsom is one of the most prolific and historic races in the world, won by some very famous horses. In fact Camelot – the most recent British Triple Crown contender – landed the Derby before going on to contest our very own Ladbrokes St Leger stakes, eventually finishing runner-up. “Given its significance to the sport, we’ve taken the opportunity to pay tribute to The Derby and we hope the race-going public get into the spirit of the day. I’ll be keeping a watchful eye on the winner as they often become favourite for our own classic in September, the St Leger.” Off-the-track programme has been designed so that racegoers get to enjoy an early summer’s evening of entertainment after the last race has finished. UB40 tribute act ‘The UB40 Experience’ will be performing in the main hall after racing, a DJ will be playing summer tunes on terrace of The Old Weighing Room after racing and darts legend Bobby George will be daring the public to take him on in the ‘9 darts challenge’. Mr Spincer added: “We want people to stay on and enjoy the occasion, so we’ve arranged off-the-track entertainment to appeal to all tastes. It promises to be a thrilling day all round.” The Derby Day Raceday will be followed by the Father’s Day Family Fun Day on Sunday June, 15 with entertainment from Peppa Pig and a stunning display by the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team. Derby Day Raceday tickets are available now starting at £7.50. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk or call 01302 304200.

Bought some chicken drumsticks earlier. All I need to do now is find a chicken that can play the drums. He’d been playing outside with the other kids for a while when he came into the house and asked her, “Grandma what’s that called when two people sleep in the same room and one is on top of the other?” She was a little taken aback but she decided to tell him the truth. “It’s called sexual intercourse darling.” Little Tony said “Oh OK” and went back outside to play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came back in and said angrily “Grandma it isn’t called sexual intercourse. It’s called Bunk Beds. And Jimmy’s mum wants to talk to you.” I hate people who refuse to let go of the past. Debt collectors are the worst. Statistically, people with narcolepsy are more likely to find hair in their soup.. LOADS OF FREE FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT AT TRAMLINES FESTIVAL 2014 Tramlines, Sheffield’s inner-city music festival, will be staging lots of free-entry, family-friendly entertainment at this year's event as it returns from 25 – 27 July. The free activities will take place alongside the festival's core ticketed programme of live music, and will include live spray-can art, fairground rides, African percussion workshops, woodcraft, a rodeo bull, bungee run, break-dancing battles and much more. For parents and grandparents looking to occupy the kids this summer, Tramlines could be the perfect destination. Held across Sheffield City Centre and in green spaces beyond, Tramlines is not only a destination for music-lovers - who this year can see the likes of Sister Sledge, The Wedding Present and The Rifles through the festival's £28 advance weekend wristband. It also has plenty to offer families and children seeking an alternative and culturally enriching day out. This year's festival sees the welcome return of free-entry, family-friendly areas such as the Peace Gardens, the Folk Forest, the Weston Park party and Barker’s Pool, which will be filled with street theatre, dancers and workshops. To the west of the City Centre lays the historic Weston Park, which becomes a hub for family entertainment at every Tramlines. Over the weekend, the five-acre park will be packed with fairground rides, a carousel, face-painters and kids' activities such as a rodeo bull and bungee run. The bandstand will host a stage showcasing live acts from across the North including popular York band My Forever, as well as up-and-comers The Gentlemen, Broken Saints and Chloe-Jade Simmons. Fantastic food and drink with local produce from Heatherhills Farm will also be on offer, including a festival bar, ice creams, smoothies and great local coffees. The Folk Forest returns for 2014 to its beautiful glade in Endcliffe Park to offer an escape from the City Centre with a relaxed atmosphere in a beautiful river and woodland location. Free family entertainment is in abundance at the Folk Forest; kids can try their hand at skills such as fire-lighting and woodcraft, as well as having a
go at interactive team-building games such as parachute and earthball - a giant, 7ft inflatable globe, thanks to the Forest Schools. Families can also head to the Porter Valley for demonstrations of 500 year-old crafts such as iron smelting (look out for the shire horses) or take part in a yoga taster session from Yoga Sheffield. Those heading to the Folk Forest can also enjoy a quality selection folk music, contemporary art, books and photography at The Folk Forest Fair, as well as the Thornbridge Brewery Real Ale Bar and a diverse selection of food stalls including the Hot Rocks Woodfired Pizza, the Veggie Shack and Snap Deli Hog Roast to name just a few. Sitting in the heart of the City Centre is the Peace Gardens, which on Saturday 25 July will showcase 11 hours of world music interspersed with dance performances including traditional Roma dancing and belly dancing led by societies from Sheffield University. Visitors also have the option to hop over to Millennium Square on Saturday to take part in an African percussion workshop. Sunday sees more live music performances from The Stars (a band comprising of adults with learning difficulties), interactive live spray-can art and the annual Tramlines breakdancing competition featuring troupes from Sheffield and beyond. Winner of the Best Metropolitan Festival 2011 at the UK Festival Awards and shortlisted in 2013, Tramlines is a discovery festival with something to explore around every corner and, with no mud or camping, it’s the ideal place to take the kids this summer.

PENSIONERS STRUGGLE DESPITE UNCLAIMED BILLIONS NOW OPEN A quarter of over-65s are struggling financially, according to new research for Age UK, despite up to £5.5 billion in financial help going unclaimed every year. With new figures from its Chief Economist’s Report also revealing that a quarter of all over-65s feel financially worse off compared with this time last year, and a third are worried about the general cost of living, the Charity is warning that much more must be done to get vital benefits cash to those who need it. The government’s own figures show that one in 10 pensioners would not be able to pay an unexpected expense of £200, to replace a broken washing machine for example, and half of those who could afford to pay would have to dip into their savings to do so. Yet millions of older people who are struggling to survive on a meagre income could be entitled to benefits such as Pension Credit which if claimed, could provide a much-needed boost to their weekly income. In fact, if everyone who is eligible for Pension Credit made a claim, it could increase their income by an average of £1,716 a year – which would more than cover the average dual-fuel bill which currently stands at £1,271 a year. Compounding the misery of living in poverty, many of the poorest pensioners also have to pay more for other services such as gas, electricity, insurance and banking, says Age UK. Living on a low
income can be expensive – with those on pre-payment meters paying a higher energy tariff, those managing on a tight weekly budget unable to buy in bulk or benefit from cheaper direct debit rates, and those without access to the internet unable to take advantage of cheaper online deals. Many pensioners live on low, fixed incomes and have been hit hard by the rising cost of food and energy over recent years. Yet despite 1.6 million pensioners living below the poverty line, with nearly a million of those living in severe poverty and many thousands more struggling to pay basic bills, huge numbers of older people are missing out on vital support. Many are unaware of the help that’s available or reluctant to make a claim because they don’t realise they will be entitled to anything, others feel too proud or embarrassed to claim, and some believe the claiming process is too complicated or intrusive. That’s why, as part of Age UK’s extensive national information and advice service, the Charity has updated its ‘More Money in Your Pocket’ guide which is specifically designed to help older people claim the benefits to which they are entitled, including Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, and help towards paying council tax. In addition many older disabled people could receive extra support by claiming the non-means-tested Attendance Allowance. Charity Director, Caroline Abrahams, said: ‘Managing on a low, fixed income is
really tough, and many people face a daily struggle just to afford the basics. ‘That is why is it so important that every older person who is entitled to claim benefits does so. Every day Age UK helps people to claim what they are entitled to, and every day we hear how much of a difference the money makes, how surprised people are by how straightforward the process is with the help of an adviser, and how much less they have to worry about everyday bills. ‘We want any older person who is worried about money to contact us in case they are one of the millions who are entitled to extra help. Everyone should have the opportunity to be able to make the most of later life, whatever their circumstances.’ To order a free copy of the updated ‘More Money in Your Pocket’ guide or for further information and advice, people can call Age UK Advice free of charge on 0800 169 65 65, contact their local Age UK, or visit www.ageuk.org. uk/letstalkmoney, where there is also an online personalised benefits calculator to help people find out exactly what they are owed, quickly and easily. As well as publishing guides and factsheets, the Charity offers essential support via its website, free advice line and network of local Age UKs, on a broad range of issues such as claiming benefits and managing money, exploring housing options, paying for care and support, staying fit and healthy, and making the most of the internet.
HAVE YOU SWAPPED YOUR LOGBOOK? Motorists who still have the old V5C blue vehicle registration certificate (logbook) are encouraged to swap it for a new red V5C for free. DVLA has now completed automatic roll out of the red vehicle registration certificate (V5C). It is now encouraging the keepers of any vehicles who still have an old style blue V5C to replace it with new a red V5C free of charge. DVLA also recommends that any buyer offered a second hand vehicle with a blue V5C gets the seller to replace the document with a red one from DVLA before they part with any money for the vehicle. DVLA completed the automatic roll out in 2012. The new style red document was
automatically issued when: • a vehicle was registered for the first time • an application was made for changes to an existing registration, such as a change of keeper or address • a vehicle was taxed or declared off the road The new certificate was introduced following the theft of a number of defective blank certificates in 2006 after they had been rejected by DVLA and returned to the supplier. The aim was to reduce the risks to motorists of buying a stolen or cloned vehicle. DVLA recommends buyers ask to see proof of ownership of a vehicle - such as a bill of sale - and check the vehicle’s service records and a MOT
certificate to assure themselves that the sale is legal. Criminals try to legitimise the sale of a stolen or cloned vehicle with a forged or stolen registration certificate and they get away with it because many motorists believe that a V5C registration certificate is proof of ownership. It is important that motorists are aware that this is not the case. GOV.UK has details giving motorists tips on what to look out for when buying a second hand car or search Google for: Buyer Beware DVLA. Existing V5Cs will remain valid until they are replaced.

‘PUB IDOL’ IS ANNOUNCED The dramatic final of South Yorkshire’s very own talent show took place last month as 20 finalists proudly represented their local pub and battled it out in a hotly contested sing-off. Following two months of tears and triumphs for aspiring pop stars in the region, more than 200 people gathered in the Viper Rooms in Sheffield to watch the final where Jessica Armstrong, representing Noahs Ark at Intake, took first place. Organised by pub company Enterprise, more than 1,200 people took part in singing contest Pub Idol which launched in February and saw heats taking place in 20 pubs across South Yorkshire. Enterprise Divisional Director Duncan Marsden said: “Pubs have always been the cornerstone of community life in Yorkshire, but with so many communities across the UK facing pub closures, we launched Pub Idol to remind local people just how much fun your local can be. We are delighted to say the contest has done just that, and our pubs in the area have been buzzing with excitement. “We congratulate Jessica who is truly a star in the making, and all of the runners up who did

fantastically well under pressure to perform brilliantly. The level of talent in the area is truly incredible and we will be keeping a close eye on these budding singers and hope to see some of them rise to fame in the future.” After impressing a panel of judges including singer, comedian and pub owner Steve Womack and Gee Lananca of Songbird Recordings, talented Jessica won a day at Songbirds Recording Studio to create her own CD in addition to prize money of £1,000. Other finalists representing pubs across the region included runners up Laura Beresford representing The Bulls Head at Old Whittington, Nicola Scally representing The Green Dragon at Kimberworth and Jollie White from The Earl Marshall, Sheffield.
Pub Idol Winner Jessica Armstrong is singing at the Naoh’s Ark in Intake this Saturday (31st May)

Although the weather is starting to get warmer and the nights lighter, there is so much rain around at the moment, and I’m sure some of you are getting a bit nervous if your Big Day is due soon! However with careful planning, there is no reason why the weather should spoil your day.Probably the main isssue you will face is the photo album - obviously thunderstorms make sunny, attractive photos very difficult! CANCER CARE WITH A DIFFERENCE Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Weekly Feature
12
Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is proud to provide vital funding for the Cancer Support Centre, which offers a support and information service for patients, or anyone, affected by cancer. Each year the Cancer Charity has to raise over £200,000 to ensure the centre can continue its vital work. Staff at the centre are all health care professionals and help people to cope with their concerns and issues, by providing a listening ear and providing information where required. Centre Manager, Karen Holmes said: “Our dedicated team of health professionals offers support for patients, carers, friends, work colleagues and basically anyone that has been or is currently affected by cancer. “Our motto is “here to help, here to listen” and with many people returning to the centre long after their treatment finishes, we are confident that our service is a vital provision to help with the wide breadth of effects posed by cancer.” Each month, on average around 700 people contact the centre to seek guidance or solace, gain information,
attend a course or simply unwind with a coffee and a chat. With no appointment needed the centre offers advice and support on a range of issues, from welfare advice to complementary therapies. John Hodkin, who was diagnosed with Tonsil Cancer in 2003, greatly benefited from the services at the support centre after initially struggling with the reality of his diagnosis. Fireman of 22 years, John had surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Weston Park Hospital. His treatment meant that he could no longer serve in the fire service and subsequently felt somewhat lost with no where to turn. “I attended the ‘Positive About Life’ course at the support centre after suffering with depression in the months following my diagnosis.” “Not only did it completely change my outlook on life, I made several friends who I still remain close to ten years later.” “This facility is vital for patients, like me, who require help and guidance throughout their recovery. To put it simply- the centre saved my
life and for that I will be forever grateful.” John (55), who now spends his time painting and looking after his granddaughter, is still a frequent visitor to the centre and often pops in for a catch up with the team. The Cancer Charity relies on donations and fundraisers, so that it can continue funding such crucial services to benefit over 60,000 cancer patients in the region. In celebration of their 20th anniversary, the Cancer Charity is encouraging social clubs from far and wide to come together ‘For One Night Only’ by holding a unique event of their choice. Deputy Charity Director, Tina Harrison said “We want as many clubs as possible to support this event and get involved in some friendly rivalry to see who can raise the most.” To find out more about how to get involved in For One Night Only visit www. wphcancercharity.org.uk/ events or complete and return the registration form below.

A CELEBRATION OF SHEFFIELD-NESS!
To those of us in-the-know, it comes as no surprise beneath Sheffield’s industrial façade, beats the heart of a passionate and thriving independent food scene. From producers and suppliers through to bars, delis and restaurants, the Steel City truly offers The Full Monty when it comes to filling your belly. Pat Castleton from Henderson’s Relish stated; “When we heard about the book we simply knew we had to be in it. A bottle of Hendo’s lives in pretty much every Sheffielders cupboard and is a staple at the dinner table. We’re synonymous with the city and absolutely chuffed to be involved with an incredible first-time project such as this.” The Sheffield Cook Book features the very best of Sheffield’s culinary community – showcasing the secrets to their success. It’s your window into a world that Sheffielders (true to their nature) rarely shout about. Chock-full of recipes, stories and anecdotes, this new 224-page
cook book features 50 recipes and over 350 stunning images from talented food photographer Marc Barker, with front cover artwork from Sheffield artist Luke Prest. Rupert Rowley, head chef of Fischer’s at Baslow said; “Being a Michelin starred restaurant in Sheffield, we couldn’t wait to get on board with this – and the outcome has exceeded all expectations. It’s a wonderful addition to the city’s food scene and features some absolutely fantastic recipes along with tons of facts that make for great reading.” As well as professional chefs the book features recipes from Sheffield Wednesday’s Lee Bullen, Sheffield United’s Chris Morgan, popular BBC presenter Rony Robinson and Everly Pregnant Brothers front-man Shaun Doane shares his meat and potato pie recipe with us.

REMEMBERING JOHN’S STORY CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
We were very sad to learn a few days ago that one of Club Historians early contributors, John from Darlington, had passed away. John got in touch with us in 2009 to share some club experiences and also some thoughts on what clubs might do to survive. He wrote in such an honest, down- to- earth, poignant and also amusing way that we just had to publish his words. ‘John’s Story’ received a lot of attention- five years on it still does. To commemorate John’s passing, I shall revisit his club story this week and next. Importantly, it incorporates the contributions clubs make to local communities, ranging from entertainment to charity, helping older people, taking families on trips to the seaside etc. He was concerned about the decline of clubs and offered suggestions of ways they could be saved. John first joined a WMC when he was 21 years old in 1971, becoming a member of Haughton WMC in Darlington. ‘Even thought there were two pubs within 100 yards of it, the club thrived for many years. Indeed it once won or was runner-up in the “Club of the Year” awards.’ He remembered a pint costing about 10p and the light for the snooker tables 5p. ‘Disgusting’, he wrote. ‘only 2p at Harrowgate Hill Club!’ Most of his schoolmates joined the club and so they kept in contact regularly.’ ’Clubs were cheap then, beer and entertainment. There was always something going on. Dancing (to a real band), bingo, singer, comedian, pop groups, and so on. Then there was Games Night and Ladies Night. Big name entertainment at affordable prices.’ Recognise all of that readers? John enjoyed a game of snooker (although claiming he was never very good), dominoes and darts. ’In my formative years, when I was young and still a virgin, me and my mates would all go to the ASE (Engineers Club) every Monday - WHY!? Strippers, a comic or group.’ He reckoned that for some this was the first sight of a woman in the flesh, not just a picture in a magazine. He recalled one night a stripper had not turned up, so an associate of theirs called “Big Julie” took to the stage for the last spot. ‘She got the biggest cheer of the night!’ Bingo was played in the interval but not for money: people were given beer tokens. ‘An excellent idea, as it ensured that you would come back the next week.’ Not that they needed any encouragement it seems!

MECHANICAL BULL only three RIDES INTO TOWN months to go
Preview: Kings Of Leon 17/06/14 - Motorpoint Arena By Kt Evans
We’ve seen them headline festivals across the world, splash themselves through international chart positions (plus that infamous incident with Jared and bird poo…we’ll skirt over that one) but Kings Of Leon are set to return to Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena for the fourth time ever on 17th June. Armed with their Grammy nominated number one album ‘Mechanical Bull,’ the four piece from Nashville are due for their biggest string of UK shows yet. Forming in 1999, the brotherhood have seen massive change both in an overall genre shift alongside a spectacular increase in popularity. Their debut album, Youth And Young Manhood was released in July 2003 and saw the four piece exploit a country and western / blues influenced genre, with tracks “California Waiting” and “Molly’s Chamber” littering their 11 track release. Proceeding this, Aha Shake Heartbreak, which saw the band explore a more garage-rock sound, something which was hugely influenced by their then producer Angelo Petragalio who brought out an alternative side to the US brethren. Hits from this album included “The Bucket,” “King Of The Rodeo” and “Taper Jean Girl which featured on the 2007 movies Disturbia and Cloverfield. Kings Of Leon hit commercial success with their third studio album, Because Of The Times released in 2007. Flying straight in at number one in the Official UK album charts, the record plays witness to an alternative rock influence, with the likes of “On Call” and “McFearless” using much heavier sounding riff workings than that of their previous material. The album sold over 70,000 copies in its first week of release and secured Kings Of Leon firmly as rock and roll legends. To 2008, and Only By The Night, by far the groups most celebrated album to date. After winning Best International Album at the 2009 BRIT awards, hits “Sex On Fire” and “Use Somebody” have since been regarded as some of the most important rock songs to have been released this century, not to mention filling night clubs and bars across the world. Come Around Sundown in 2010 followed, proceeded by their most recent release Mechanical Bull, which once again stole a number one UK chart position. Kings Of Leon have also announced they will be headlining this year’s V Festival in August, one of the UK’s most popular summer events of the entire calendar. Kings Of Leon are performing at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 17/06/14. See www. motorpoinntarenasheffield.co.uk for ticket info.
Preview: Leeds Festival, 22-24/08/14, Bramham Park By Kt Evans Our favourite festival of the entire summer calendar, Leeds Festival is set to return to Bramham Park from 22nd – 24th August. With their biggest and best line-up to date, this year sees a mix of alterative, hardcore, pop punk, dance and indie acts all bolstering up for the weekend of the year. Due to such an enormous amount of bands on the bill, we’ll stick with main stage action to give you our top picks of the weekend. If you’ve ever witnessed the institution that is Leeds Festival, you’ll understand what we mean when we say…wow. Prepare your competition kidneys for a three day event which will have you partying Andrew WK style whilst wearing a Primark onesie (why on earth we ever think this is a good idea is beyond us now) to a line-up of bands which will ensure you never want to leave. Friday 22nd August, the first day of festival shenanigans is to be headlined by the mighty Blink 182. Speaking of the legacy Blink 182 have created, Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden said: “Anyone in our genre would be lying if they said they weren’t influenced by Blink 182.” Since their formation back in 1993, the pop punk group have released six studio albums along with a string of singles including “I Miss You,” “What’s My Age Again” and “All The Small Things,” landing the three piece straight into the rock and roll hall of fame. Other main stage acts on the first day of Leeds Festival include Macklemore, You Me At Six and A Day To Remember. To Saturday 23rd August, the main stage this year is to be headlined by two acts – Queens Of The Stone Age and Paramore. One of rock’s most influential live acts, Queens Of The Stone Age have paved the way for a generation of bands who have gone onto sell out festivals and arenas worldwide. Paramore have had a string of number one albums alongside the o’h so tiny accolade of selling out Wembley Arena back in December 2013... The final day of Leeds festival (get a Kleenex ready, we have a feeling it’s going to be a weepy one) is to be headlined by Sheffield’s finest, most proudest export, Arctic Monkeys. From humble beginnings in High Green to headlining some of the world’s most infamous stages, the five piece have gone on to become national treasures. Sheffield could not be any more in admiration of Alex, Jamie, Matt and Nick…Yorkshire Yorkshire! Check out www.leedsfestival.com for the full line up.
MOSBOROUGH MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS BIGGER THAN EVER FOR A FOURTH YEAR Mosborough Music Festival returns for 2014 next week taking place on June 7th. Now in its 4th year this charity driven festival is getting bigger and bigger each year with The Farm, The Twang and Lucy Spraggan headlining this time around. Last year’s festival saw record crowds attend the event which headlined by Reverend & the Makers on Saturday and Paul Heaton and Neville Staple on the Sunday.
Over 160 bands applied to play at this years festival which is testament to how much the festival has grown year on year. More than ten bands will be playing throughout the day next Saturday with the headliners being joined by a wealth of local talent including The Sherlocks, Polkalodge, Sabella plus many more. The Farm are one of Britain’s most iconic bands with their world famous track All together Now being universally known and reaching number 4 in the charts in 1990, number 24 in 1995 and number 5 in 2005 which is testament to the records popularity. Liverpool based, The Farm’s number one bestselling album ‘Spartacus’ also features classic tracks, ‘Groovy Train’ and ‘Stepping Stone’. It’s another great coupe for Mosborough music festival to have such a cornerstone of British Music play here, welcome to Sheffield. After numerous attempts the organisers of the festival have also signed one of the UK’s finest bands, The Twang are quite simply brilliant live. Hailing from Birmingham, these Brummies will have Mosborough rocking. Their debut album, ‘Love it when I feel like this’ reached number 3 in the UK charts. Past performances have seen then Headline the John Peel stage at Glastonbury. Representing Sheffield as a headliner is acoustic guitar starlet Lucy Spraggan. The fantastic singer song writer will be singing her hits ‘Last night (Beer Fear)’, ‘Tea and Toast’ and ‘Lighthouse’. She famously brought the X Factor house down and made it to the final 10 before she pulled out of the show due to illness. Lucy was born in Buxton but moved to Sheffield (which she now calls her hometown) when she left school. Another act appearing from the world of TV talent shows is 14 year old Connie Talbot. Connie rose to fame by reaching the final of Britain’s got talent where she finished runner up to Paul Potts. In 2007 Connie released the first of 4 albums thus far, ‘Over the Rainbow’ sold over 300,000 albums and reached number one in three different countries. Connie has sold over a million albums in total. Her recent (Jan 2014) you-tube entry, ‘Let it Go’ has already had 2.5 million hits. Connie will be performing a few solo tracks and then singing with the fantastic 90’s Brit pop cover band Marquis Drive, we are delighted to have Connie play at Mosborough music festival. Supporting the headine acts will be Missing Andy, Soul Fire Saints, Sour Cherry, Sabella, The Sherlocks, Jungle Lion and Marquis Drive. Over the past few years over £26.000 has been raised for various charities. This years chosen charity is St Luke's Hospice. Tickets are priced and £20 if bought in advance or available on the day for £22.50, Under 13’s are Free. Tickets can be purchased from www.mosboroughmusicfestival.co.uk or by calling 0114 2512969

FISHING • TO LET NEW CONTRACT
with Clint Walker
I’ve had a bit of a change of scene this week; no day of preparation beforehand, no barrow, no boilies, no big fish, just me, a net and a light lure rod. My local canal has a chequered history having burst its banks and deposited most of the resident stock into adjacent fields a couple of years ago, so it has taken some time to regain any semblance of former glories, but I fancied a wander...just to see...and I’m glad I did. I know of several spots which hold fish; likely hides and holes that regularly used to produce perch of some quality, but would they these days after the previous tenants had long since passed in muddy fields? There are boats and bridges too, bushes and reed beds, all of which have the potential to provide cover for hungry predators, and it’s spots like these which I usually try first, so I shut the van up and wandered off. I’m not at all keen on ‘featureless’ areas of waterway which just look desolate, but after rigging an Ecogear soft lure, I wanted to check it was working as intended; a flick into the middle of the canal saw a very slow retrieve with a few gentle twitches of the rod tip as the Grass Minnow lure skipped over the bottom. As I watched the lure move through the water and tried to replicate the movements of a prey fish, I was more than happy to see a dark shadow detach from the piling under my feet and attack the bait! Result! Not a big fish, perhaps around 5oz, but I was only checking the lure! A second cast gave almost exactly the same result, with another small stripey following the lure to the edge before swooping to attack. For about five minutes, I had a shoal of perch fighting to be first to hook themselves before they finally got wise and drifted off, but at least I knew the lure action was correct, so I moved off to one of my favourite spots further upstream. This particular position has a boat moored against a jetty on the far side, an inflow/ overflow from a nearby river which undercuts the far bank, some twisted tree roots and plenty of reeds; in short, it’s perch heaven and I’ve had them to almost 3lbs previously. Dropping double maggot on the bomb then flicking odd ones over the top is a sure fire way to catch them usually, but I only had a lure rod and selection of Ecogear lures, so lobbed my rig against the tree roots and slowly jigged it back; nothing! I tried four or five casts, each time expecting the jagged pull of a perch, but never got it. A quick change to an Ecogear Paramax (in pink since you ask) saw me lose a small perch, and after another ten minutes of fruitless pursuit, I changed back to the bigger, brighter Grass Minnow which I thought would be easier to spot in the cloudy water. A quick cast downstream before tightening the braid and before I’d even started to turn the reel handle, a fish was on! Fair enough, it wasn’t a monster, just a small pike of 2-3lbs which gave a good account of itself on light clobber and the icing on the cake of a short two hour session which saw me catch a string of small perch and a couple of tiny pike, but I can tell you that I enjoyed the freedom to walk up the towpath, flick a tiny lure into likely spots and move on without being encumbered by mountains of kit. If you haven’t tried ‘dropshotting’ yet, perhaps now is the time to pick up a light rod, a tupperware box of plastics and a few hooks, and go for a slow bimble along the towpath to see what you can find...It’s not too technical, you don’t need much equipment and I know you will enjoy it!

Phil Hill will have another crack at lifting the EIHL title next season after signing a new one year contract with the Steelers. Hill, who re-joined the Steelers mid way through last season eventually collected his first piece of silverware after scoring in last Aprils play off final against Belfast. Head coach Gerad Adams said "He has finally won something and he is hungry for more. He wants a league title to add to last seasons play off championship "Hilly attitude and approach are so important to me. He is comfortable with his role within our club. He knows there are times when ice time will be limited but he is experienced enough to know that there will be chances and when they come I know he will be there to take them "He always stays positive, he is a glass half full guy not half empty. For him to finally lift a championship last year was huge, especially as he played so well in the big games and scored in the final. He is a hugely important piece of our puzzle and I'm delighted we are back on the same side again" For Phil Hill it was his second stint at the Steelers, and a hugely successful one. "I don't think last year could have had more twists" he said "starting with high hopes at Cardiff and then being released by my home town club was a low point but that changed when I arrived back in Sheffield. I was immediately comfortable and enjoyed every moment. To win at the finals was the best feeling I have experienced in hockey "It is why I wanted to return so badly. I want to win again. I want to play in those big games. I want the year to mean something. I'm settled in Sheffield, I love the training, the games and my team mates. There is a core here that I feel part of. "I've player for G (Gerad Adams) for so long now. We know each other so well. I play hard for him and he treats me well. He knows how serious I am about playing well, being a part of the team and winning. I waited a long time to win and now I have experienced it I want more of it with the Steelers. I want to relive that day last April again and honestly believe that we can do that again this coming season "The day after the season ended I wanted to come back to the rink and start again for this coming season. You should never count days away they say but I am and September can't come soon enough for me"

REVELL LEADS STUNNING COMEBACK AS MILLERS HEAD FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROTHERHAM UNITED will be playing Championship football next year after a nailbiting penalty-shoot-out victory over Leyton Orient earned Steve Evans’ men back-to-back promotions. The Millers’ chances looked dead and buried at half-time as Moses Odubajo and Dean Cox put the Londoners in the driving seat in the season-defining play-off finale. However, Alex Revell came back to haunt his former club by halving the deficit before putting Rotherham on level terms with a fantastic strike from long range. Neither side were able to take the initiative in extratime and despite trailing early in the penalty count, Adam Collin was the hero as his smart save from sub Chris Dagnall saw Rotherham book their place in England’s second tier. Evans kept faith with his play-off semi-final winning starting line-up over Preston North End for the winner-takes-all trip to Wembley. The only change to the squad being the return of young full-back Richard Brindley, who was named amongst the Millers’ substitutes at the expense of Daniel Rowe. Buoyed by a vocal travelling contingent, the Millers had the first sight of goal when Lee Frecklington was bundled over by Romain Vincelot but Mathieu Baudry rose highest to clear Ben Pringle’s inswinging centre. Moments later, Rotherham had faint appeals for a spot kick when Revell appeared to be felled by Nathan Clarke but referee David Coote waved away the Millers’ protests. The Millers were looking the most likely and Collin’s long punt upfield was met by the head of skipper Craig Morgan, whose downward header gave Wes Thomas, a sniff of goal but his goalbound effort was blocked by the legs of Jamie Jones, but any goal would have been chalked off as the referee had blown for an infringement. At the other end, Orient had their first effort of note when Cox floated a centre which was flicked on by David Mooney but Odubajo blazed over from an acute angle. Minutes later, Frecklington’s daisy-cutter failed to trouble Jones before James Tavernier tried his luck from distance forcing the Orient stopper into a smart save, as he gathered at the second attempt. Just before the half-hour, Mooney struck into the side netting after Cox was crowded out before Scott Cuthbert became the first to see yellow after hauling down Pringle near the touchline. Moments later, Morgan incurred the wrath of the referee by tugging down Mooney to earn a yellow card in the process and Orient made them pay with the opening goal from the resultant free-kick. The Londoners planted the ball into the box and after Kari Arnason only half-cleared the danger, Odubajo controlled smartly before striking a rasping effort from distance which whistled through a ruck of bodies and with ‘keeper Collin possibly unsighted, the ball flew into the roof of the net. Orient were visibly lifted by the strike and they gave the Millers a mountain to climb when they doubled their advantage soon after. With the Millers struggling to deal with a ball forward, Mooney caused havoc in the Rotherham rearguard and Tavernier inadvertedly headed the ball into the path of Odubajo, who played a superb sliderule ball across the box and with Collin a helpless bystander, Cox had the simple task of tapping into an empty net. With half-time approaching, Pringle came within a whisker of reducing the arrears when he struck a fantastic dipping effort from long range which had Jones nervously scurrying backwards but the ball narrowly cleared the crossbar. Following the restart, Rotherham had an opportunity to get themselves back in the game when Baudry hauled down Revell on the edge of box but from the resultant free-kick, Tavernier’s curling effort whistled narrowly over the bar. Minutes later, Lloyd James’ mistimed tackle halted Frecklington’s marauding run and from the other flank, Pringle’s free-kick from the just outside the box sailed over the bar. However, the Millers were rewarded for their pressure at the third time of asking when Tavernier’s tantalising free-kick had the Orient defence at sixes and sevens and Kieran Agard got a timely foot on the ball as Orient looked to clear and Revell had the simple task of tapping into the unguarded goal. The Millers were sniffing blood and they got themselves back on level terms with a wondergoal from Orient old boy Revell. There looked little danger when Pringle floated a ball down the flank and Agard challenged for possession but the ball popped up invitingly for Revell, who struck a fantastic dipping effort from 35 yards which
caught Jones by surprise and left him grasping for thin air as it found the heart of the Orient goal. The Londoners were struggling to clear their heads and Clarke saw yellow for hauling down Tavernier before Mooney’s inviting pass bisected the Rotherham rearguard paving the way for Odubajo to fire a dangerous cross which was cleared by a retreating defender. Moments later, Arnason’s long throw was flicked on by Morgan into the advancing run of Frecklington but the midfield maestro was inches away from making a telling contact before Tavernier became the latest to be cautioned for needlessly throwing the ball away. With the game in the balance, James’ inviting centre bizarrely missed the Orient runners before Rotherham had an opportunity to take a decisive lead when sub Brindley’s long punt put Agard in the clear but the Millers’ hitman fluffed his lines, screwing his shot wide of the target when he should have done better. With full-time approaching, Pringle was yellowcarded for cynically hauling down sub Shaun Batt near the touchline before Rotherham countered with menace but Pringle’s whipped cross was too deep for the onrushing Agard. As extra-time loomed, a fine flowing move released Frecklington, whose clever cross to the front post found Agard but he couldn’t direct his header goalwards from a narrow angle before Pringle blasted over in the last play of normal time. In extra-time, Mooney became the latest to see yellow for tugging back Tavernier before Rotherham came within a whisker of taking the lead. Arnason’s long-throw was flicked on by Revell at the front post and Cuthbert flashed a bullet header towards his own goal but ‘keeper Jones got his teammate out of jail with a superb reflex save. At the other end, Mooney showed clever skill to flight a delicate chip which narrowly cleared the bar before Pringle was fortunate to escape further sanction when he clipped Batt just outside the box. From the resultant free-kick, James curled an inviting centre which was met by the head of Clarke but his effort failed to trouble Collin. With the tie on a knife-edge, sub Chris Dagnall almost jinked his way into the box but he was crowded out by a retreating Millers defence before James’ cross-cum-shot had Rotherham hearts fluttering as the ball flashed in and around the sixyard box momentarily. At the other end, sub Haris Vuckic turned smartly, paving the way for a snap shot which was deflected over the bar before Rotherham had to play with ten for the latter stages as Frecklington suffered a bout of cramp. Penalties 1-0 Rotherham scored- Agard wrongfooted Jones by finding the heart of the net. 1-1 Orient scored- James converts by finding the top corner. 1-1 Rotherham missed- Frecklington’s weak effort was saved by Jones, who dived correctly to his right. 1-2 Orient scored- Lundstram gives Orient the advantage by firing into the roof of the net. 2-2 Rotherham scored- Pringle cleverly wrongfooted Jones to find the bottom corner of the net. 2-3 Orient scored- Clarke kept his nerve to wrongfoot Collin and slide the ball into the bottom corner. 3-3 Rotherham scored- Tavernier’s short run up and clipped shot kept Rotherham in it. 3-3 Orient missed- Baudry’s effort was smothered by Collin, who dived correctly. 4-3 Rotherham scored- Smallwood kept his nerve to find the far corner of the net 4-3 Orient missed- Collin dived smartly to his right to keep out Dagnall’s effort.
ENGLAND CALL FOR ROMANIAN DEFENDER JOINS CAMERON DAWSON WATFORD
Rovers would like to congratulate Gabriel Tamas on his move to Sky Bet Championship side Watford. The Romanian defender arrived at the Keepmoat Stadium last season on a free transfer and made 14 appearances for Paul Dickov’s side. The 30 year old played through the pain barrier having suffered a nasty facial injury and will probably be best remembered for wearing a ‘Phantom of the Opera’ type mask. Tamas’ tenure at the Club came to a close at the end of the season at the expiration of his contract and all at Doncaster Rovers would like to wish him every success at Vicarage Road.

Owls youngster Cameron Dawson has been selected for the England Under-19s squad aiming for a place in July’s European Championship finals in Hungary. The talented goalkeeper was included in the 23-man training camp squad that gathered last week and Dawson impressed sufficiently to make the final cut of 18. Noel Blake’s England side will play Montenegro, Ukraine and Scotland in the Elite Rounds of the competition. On the domestic stage, Dawson graduated through the Owls’ academy to earn a professional contract in S6 and broadened his experience last season with a loan spell at League Two side Plymouth.
